Elburn bridge begins road to reality

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A huge step toward easing Elburn’s traffic issues was taken Monday afternoon, as state, county and village officials plunged shovels into the ground to signify the kicking off of a project that will create a crossing of the train tracks in town.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place near the intersection of Anderson Road and Prairie Valley Street, just northeast of John Stewart Elementary School in Elburn.

The project will extend the road, which currently stops at the intersection, to the south.

Included will be a bridge that crosses the tracks. That will provide an alternative route in Elburn, because drivers often are forced to wait at the tracks on Route 47. A study showed that 105 trains a day pass through the village.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, Kane County Board member Drew Frasz and Kane County engineer Carl Shoedel were among those who spoke at the event. State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, Kaneland School District 302 Superintendent Jeff Schuler, ShoDeen Inc. president Dave Patzelt and Elburn officials were among those in attendance.

Lauzen credited the spirit of cooperation that brought the project together.

Schoedel said there will be more to say when the project comes in under budget and on time. Anderson thanked officials including Lauzen and Lauzen’s predecessor, Karen McConnaughay. Frasz talked of the celebration to come “a year and a half from now, when we’re cutting the ribbon on this bridge.”

Also at the event was Paul Holcomb, the project’s manager. Holcomb explained that the intersection of Anderson Road and Route 38 will remain in the same place, but much of Anderson Road will shift to the east, and the road will not be directly next to John Stewart Elementary. Anderson Road currently stops just shy of the parking lot in front of the

“It will start moving gradually to the east, so it’s away from the school,” he said.

“That’s a good thing.”

He said there is hope that significant construction can begin this year.

The project got the green light earlier this year, when Elburn officials agreed to annex the land on which ShoDeen will build the Elburn Station development. That construction won’t begin until after the bridge is complete, and there was much debate over the project before its approval. Frasz saluted Elburn Village Board member Bill Grabarek, who played a key role in the debate that went on for months as the details were

hammered out.

Grabarek was at Monday’s ceremony. He acknowledged that he “made a lot of noise” about it, but he said it only was to make certain that the village was represented properly. He said the extension will be “a great benefit.”

The project includes more than $21 million in state, federal and local funds, and officials have credited former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert for his role. After the ceremony, Frasz said there were times he was concerned about the project, as the village debated the plans for Elburn Station, but he was pleased that details were worked out.

Concert salutes vets, benefits nonprofits

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Music lovers had a chance to indulge in some country and bluegrass tunes Saturday in St. Charles while helping three local charitable organizations and paying tribute to veterans.

The third annual concert held at the Arcada Theatre raised money for the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club and the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles. And for the first time, the concert benefited the Operation Finally Home organization and saluted veterans.

Bob Brown, president of the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club, said the first year of the concert drew 600 attendees and the second year drew almost 900 people. This year, organizers offered an afternoon concert that drew about 400 people, according to Arcada personnel, along with a second concert at 7 p.m. Brown said he hoped to exceed the more than $30,000 they helped raise last year for the organizations.

The Rotary Club in the last five years has given $73,000 in local scholarships and $43,000 in local charitable giving efforts, Brown said.

He said he was excited to partner with a new organization this year – Operation Finally Home – that helps build homes for wounded service members and their families in the St. Charles area.

And, with Veterans Day around the corner, the concert honored veterans, and military men and women.

Special guest Wally Guzy, 97, a World War II veteran who was in the 90th Army Infantry Division and fought during the D-Day Normandy invasion, led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brown said special guest John Wredling, a World War II veteran who served in the Army Air Corps, also was supposed to be in attendance, but wasn’t feeling well.

Singer and guitar player Billy Croft, a Naperville firefighter who lives in St. Charles, said he and his band members were glad to be a part of the benefit concert for the first time and help raise funds for the nonprofits.

“They do a lot of good things for the community, and as a fireman, that fits in with what we do,” he said.

John Rabchuk, treasurer for the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles, said the concert is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the organization, which helps maintain and improve walkways and bike paths

along the Fox River corridor.

Rabchuk said members of the organization hope to use the money raised to implement some ideas they’ve culled from other cities across the country that surround rivers. He said the idea for the annual concert started with the Rev. Al Patten, a minister at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles, who was a “bluegrass aficionado,” and was also a member of the River Corridor Foundation and Rotary Club. “[The concert] has always been at the Arcada,” he said.

“It’s a great way to showcase St. Charles.”

THE ART OF THE AUCTION Bidder 101: It’s similar to improv show

A

lot of what R. Kyle Reed says is nonsense.

At least that’s what the Kaneville resident tells people attending his Bidder 101 class, which usually precedes an auction.

As an auctioneer, what he says – the auction chant – consists of filler words – the nonsense – as well as the important content, the dollar amounts offered to the bidders, he said.

He provided that information – along with instructions on the bidding procedure and the definitions of other auction terms – to a group gathered at the Beehive Tavern and Grille in downtown St. Charles last month for an auction benefiting a man fighting cancer.

Standing on a raised platform in the establishment’s back room, Reed began auctioning off more than a hundred items, an assortment that included baked goods, beauty products, toys and gift certificates.

“It’s the best part of the whole gig,” he said.

The real work happens behind the scenes, such as cataloguing and photographing the items, Reed said.

“By the time I get to the actual auction, I’m exhausted,” he said, likening the event to an improv show.

“OK, on the plate of food she brought out,” he said, referring to a waitress weaving through the tables and chairs, “who will give me $5 for that?”

Between the silliness, the

auction chant rolled off his tongue in rapid-fire succession.

“That’s just practice,” Reed said, noting he has rehearsed the numbers so many times in his head that he doesn’t have to think about them during the auction itself.

But he deliberately doesn’t speak as fast as some auctioneers.

“I try to sell things quickly, but I want people to enjoy it,” he said.

Reed, 38, grew up going to auctions with his father and grandfather, but said he only recently turned to auction-

eering as a profession.

Like many others, he said, he was laid off in 2009. Bored and unemployed, he wanted to start a business. That led him to create Reed’s General Merchandise, a family owned and operated auction and Internet consignment business based in Lily Lake.

Reed received his training at the Nashville Auction School in Tullahoma, Tenn., he said. He is a licensed auc-

tioneer in Illinois.

In addition to holding auctions on location, Reed regularly conducts public consignment auctions, he said, noting his next is set for 5 p.m. Saturday at the Dave Werdin Community Center in Kaneville.

In his experience, there’s a buyer for everything.

“For the right price,” Reed said, “you can sell about anything.”

S. Elgin village president dies after battling cancer KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – Village President Jim Hansen died Friday night after a battle with lung cancer.

Hansen, 53, had been village president since 2001.

He had previously served as a village trustee since 1991.

“President Hansen truly

cared about the community and the residents,” South Elgin Village Administrator Larry Jones said in a statement. “He was approachable and open to input from citizens.”

While in office, Hansen initiated “Coffee with the Mayor,” where residents, who might be uncomfortable at a board meeting, could visit, ask questions and make

suggestions.

Hansen is survived by his wife, Teri, their three sons and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., (Route 31), Elgin.

Burial will follow in Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin.

The visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Suspicious incident reported near school

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department on Sunday received a report of a suspicious incident involving three juvenile boys and two people in a car, police said in a bulletin released Monday.

According to police, the boys were walking in the area of Moore Avenue and Fourth Place in St. Charles at about 5:25 p.m. when a red station wagon approached them.

Two males were reportedly in the vehicle, and one yelled out the window at the boys, saying he had candy for the boys.

The juveniles kept walk-

ing and did not approach the station wagon, police said.

The vehicle was last scene traveling north on Fourth Place, police said, noting the make, model and registration were unknown.

Police said the race, age and description of the vehicle’s occupants also were unknown, but they did not speak with an accent.

Moore Avenue and Fourth Place is near Munhall Elementary School, 1400 S. 13th Ave., St. Charles.

The school sent an email Monday afternoon about the incident.

The email encouraged those with information to call the police department at 630-377-4435.

CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – Mary Ann Sedor’s pants were caked in mud after her bicycle couldn’t quite make it up a muddy hill during Sunday’s Campton Cross – Chicago Cyclocross Cup Halloween Race at Anderson Park in Campton Township.

“I totally wiped out,” Sedor said. “My bike tipped over.”

Despite the setback, the Warrenville resident said she enjoyed the challenge of the race.

“It is super hard,” Sedor said. “You are pretty much at your threshold the whole time.”

Participants and spectators were encouraged to dress in costume in the Campton Cross, which consisted of 12 different races.

For Jostein Alvestad of Elmhurst, dressing up was as much fun as riding in the race. He came dressed as Tonto, with his black wig doubling as a bicycle helmet.

“I saw the movie ‘The Lone Ranger’ with my kids and decided to dress as Tonto,” Alvestad said.

The course provided plenty of challenges for Alvestad as well.

“There are some tricky turns and some challenging bumpy parts,” he said.

Cyclocross is the sport of racing bicycles over rough terrain. Bicyclist Matt Howley of Glen Ellyn discovered just how rough the course was after participating in the event.

“It’s mostly uphill,” Howley said. “Jostein talked me into doing the race. I did my best.”

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An amendment needed to facilitate the redevelopment of Charlestowne Mall was passed unanimously through an omnibus vote Monday evening by the St. Charles City Council.

The city’s planning and development committee last week supported the concept approved Monday.

The current Charlestowne

Mall PUD, which was formed in 1988, requires approval of a new PUD in order to make any building modifications and add new buildings.

The contract purchasers of the property, SC Main 3800 LLC, have indicated they plan to construct freestanding structures, such as banks or restaurants, along East Main Street.

Other proposed modifications may include changes to the “ring road” around the

mall, removal of the former Sears store and changes to the exterior.

Proposed plans also call for more prominent front entrances with pedestrian-oriented streetscaping, according to meeting documents.

Mayor Ray Rogina said the closing date with the proposed developers will likely be sometime mid-November.

Following a closing date, he said the council likely will start crafting incentives.

He said he has been “very pleased” with how the city staff and proposed developers have been working together through the process so far.

In other business, council members approved an ordinance to issue no more than $5.5 million in general obligation bonds for various infrastructure improvements around the city, including weatherizing the City Hall building and improving drainage at Tyler Road and

Main Street.

Finance Director Chris Minick said all of the improvements were considered during the budget process.

He said he expects interest rates to be around 4 percent. He said while interest rates are slightly higher than they were a few months ago, they’re still more reasonable than they have been.

“Keep in mind, these are historically extremely low rates,” he said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva’s long-term plan was to have bike trails along Route 31 from Fabyan Forest Preserve to the south and connecting to the Fox River Trail at the Kane County Government Center.

Aldermen Monday approved advancing a goal to put in two bike lanes on Route 31, while addressing the narrowness of the existing traffic lanes. The concept was included in the city’s 2005 bike plan. Being included in the next fiscal year’s goals means the issue will be discussed and examined, not necessarily approved, officials said.

Bob Fitzsimmons, a resident of the city’s 5th Ward and Phil Bus, former director of the county’s transportation department, spoke to aldermen about addressing the bike path issue as the state will have to repave Route 31 in the coming years.

“This has been a concept for a long time,” Fitzsimmons said.

Bus said Route 31 has narrow lanes, from 38.5- to 40-

feet wide “and we’ve all had at least one white-knuckle experience on Route 31.”

Their proposal is to put in 5-foot-wide bike paths on either side, creating a twolane road with one through lane and a turn lane.

The goal also would be to improve safety and reduce crashes.

The speed limits are 35 and 30 mph, but Bus said, “I don’t know anyone who has actually driven 30 miles an hour. If you’re going to the train, you’re going a lot faster.”

The restructuring of the road in their proposal would have a “calming effect” on traffic, allowing the road to maintain capacity of 12,000 to 14,000 cars daily, including trucks.

Bus said the goal is not to reduce traffic capacity, but to create opportunities for bike and pedestrian friendly connections to existing trails.

The proposal calls for landscape islands in some areas, but officials noted the city would have to pay for those – not the state – so the consideration would include cost of maintenance and upkeep.

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen Monday approved the expansion of the city’s crime-free housing program.

Aldermen approved a staff recommendation that Batavia’s crime-free housing program be renamed and expanded to include more rental buildings within the city.

Batavia aldermen in September 2011 approved the twoyear pilot program, which ends this year.

City staff recommended the program be made permanent, and that it be renamed “City of Batavia Rental Prop-

As part of the expanded program, a building or complex will need to pass a property maintenance inspection before the owner is issued a rental property license. The inspection would include the exterior of the building’s grounds and common areas within the building. Individual apartments would not be inspected.

Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening told aldermen that requiring property maintenance inspections will help

bring rental buildings to a higher standard in the community.

As part of the program, landlords must include a crime-free lease addendum that makes criminal activity a violation and grounds for eviction. That includes murder, drug-related criminal activity, prostitution and unlawful use of weapons.

The addendum covers residents and their guests.

The program had been in effect only for apartment complexes of 10 or more units. It will now expand to include those buildings or complexes that are six units or larger.

Police seek information related to robbery KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department seeks information related to an armed robbery at a fast food restaurant Sunday evening, the department said Monday in a news release.

St. Charles police responded to Subway, 570 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, at about 5:25 p.m. for a reported armed robbery.

An employee was approached by a man who stated he had a gun – but did not display the weapon – and demanded money, police said.

The man fled in an un-

known direction after he was given money, police said, noting he never threatened the employee’s safety.

The responding officers checked the area but didn’t find signs of the man, police said.

St. Charles mother files suit against D-303, parents over alleged bullying

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles mother has filed a lawsuit against the St. Charles School District 303 and another child’s parents after she said her son was bullied at school.

Tracie Hunley and her son, now 11, are named as the plaintiffs in the suit filed last week, which seeks damages in excess of $50,000 for an incident that allegedly happened on or about Oct. 16, 2012, according to the lawsuit.

The school district, a minor child and the child’s parents are named as the defendants in the case.

According to court documents, Hunley’s son had been bullied by another student while attending Davis Primary School in St. Charles last year.

The lawsuit states that District 303 staff members and administrators knew of the bullying, and staff members were supposed to be notified both orally and in writing that the two students needed to be separated while on school property.

Court documents also state that the school district held individual meetings with the family of both students to inform them of this

One count of the lawsuit states the school district recklessly failed to take the proper steps to prevent the two boys from coming into contact with one another, recklessly failed to ensure that all staff members received notification that the two boys be separated from one another at all times and purposely allowed the two boys to go out to recess together.

A second count of the law-

suit says the minor defendant’s parents knew of the potential danger and failed to take proper steps to prevent the two boys from being in contact.

It also states that they failed to remove their son from Davis Primary School after the alleged bullying began.

Count two of the lawsuit states that the defendants “failed to properly parent” and “failed to properly discipline” the minor defendant and also failed to restrain the minor defendant from contacting the minor plaintiff.

A message left with District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney was not immediately returned Monday.

The next court date is scheduled Jan. 16 in at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

“The process took so long, but that benefited the character,” Bray said.

“It’s been great because we’ve been able to build this character over time,” Jackson said. “She’s a combination of our kids.”

Jackson has two daughters, and Bray has a son. They said while writing and illustrating the book, it was important to them to leave out any kind of moral or lesson because there aren’t enough children’s books like that.

“Almost every book you get, you get your lesson – eat your vegetables, don’t hit your brother,” Bray said. “I just wanted the book to be about imagination without anything to control it. ... It’s about a kid being a kid.”

The book is targeted at children ages 4 and older, and Bray said both boys and girls would enjoy it.

ST. CHARLES – John Bray of St. Charles said he had been thinking about writing a children’s book for a long time. His inspiration came a few years ago when his son, at age 5, asked him if candy grew on trees or bushes. That stirred his imagination.

For the record, Bray answered “bushes,” because that’s what made the most sense in his imagination, he said.

Bray’s story is centered around the character, “Maggie,” a curious, free-spirited 7-year-old who lives in a blue house at the farthest end of her street. One day, she mixed up a potion in her kitchen, then tripped, spilling the potion in her yard.

And that’s where the “Maggie and the Sprinkle Tree” adventure begins.

Bray partnered with his friend and graphic designer, Christian Jackson of St. Charles, to illustrate the book.

A tax that works in combating smoking THE WASHINGTON POST Boosting taxes on cigarettes is an effective way to cut smoking rates among adults and, even more, among those college-age and younger. It also cuts tobacco-related disease and death.

A case in point is Maryland, where the incidence of smoking fell by a third from 1998 to 2010, a period during which the state more than quintupled its cigarette tax.

By the same token, states that have allowed cigarette levies to remain low, under the sway of Big Tobacco or anti-tax sentiment, generally suffer from higher smoking rates and the resulting impact on public health.

Virginia’s cigarette tax is second-lowest in the nation, after Missouri’s; it is an example of a state that extends its smokers a license to kill – themselves.

Pleased with the results in Maryland, anti-tobacco advocates want to build on their success. On the merits, they have an easy case to make. After the state doubled its levy in 2008, to $2 a pack, cigarette sales dropped sharply. Now advocates want to raise the per pack tax again, to $3. Lawmakers should take note.

Higher taxes are particularly effective in cutting tobacco use among younger smokers, whose habits are less entrenched and who are more sensitive to price.

As a direct result of the 2008 tax increase, youth smoking rates plummeted by almost a third in two years. In 2009, just 12 percent of Maryland youths were smokers, compared with a national rate of almost 20 percent.

And while adult smokers are somewhat less sensitive to price increases, Maryland’s 2008 tax hike helped cut the number of adult smokers by about 13 percent.

Complacency is the wrong course of action.

Anti-tobacco advocates point out that following the big drop after 2008, smoking rates in Maryland have started to inch up again over the past few years. That coincides with an 80 percent cut in spending on the state’s main anti-smoking program, which aims to help people to quit or not start in the first place. Despite its relatively high tax rate on cigarettes, Maryland ranks just 34th nationally among the states in spending on its anti-smoking program.

Each of the three increases in Maryland’s cigarette tax over the past dozen years has been followed immediately by a sharp drop in sales. True, some Maryland smokers may simply cross the border to buy their cartons in low-tax Virginia. But more have quit or cut back, as state-by-state smoking rates suggest.

The tobacco lobby remains strong enough to push back against further increases. In Annapolis, a bill this year to raise the state’s per-pack tax to $3 died in committee. A similar effort in the legislative session starting in January may suffer the same fate.

Anti-smoking advocates are focusing their efforts on the next year or two in the legislative calendar. They should be helped both by the counter-example of Virginia – and by the facts.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The caregiver’s journey To the Editor: When my husband, Steve, was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) eight years ago, all we knew for sure was that it would slowly rob him of his ability to function, and then it would kill him. We had no idea how tough our journey would be. I knew that because I loved Steve, I would give him the best I had, but I wasn’t sure my best would be enough.

In the beginning, I did simple things for Steve like buttoning his shirts. Now, Steve can no longer do anything for himself.

Fun activities, like visiting a child at college, are stressful for us. Because ALS has taken his ability to speak, we often communicate via email even when in the same room. He can’t hug me, kiss me, or hold my hand.

Sometimes it feels like we are simply coexisting.

To say this is tough is the understatement of the century.

Fortunately, we have hired a

professional caregiver to help part time, which allows me to do the things I love, and exist “just” as Steve’s wife, a great gift. In this way, Steve’s caregiver is caring for me, too.

We are also cared for and supported by the Les Turner ALS Foundation, our lifeline through the twists and turns of our ALS journey.

This month, which is National Family Caregivers Month, I am reminded that my caregiving journey is challenging, but I do not journey alone, and my best IS enough.

Einck anxious to evolve

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Tennis provided a comfortable constant for Geneva junior Kirby Einck during a childhood filled with family moves.

While her game traveled well, that didn’t make Einck complacent.

Improving throughout her three high school seasons, Einck has cultivated her skills during busy offseasons of USTA tournament play.

The Kane County Chronicle Girls Tennis Player of the Year found herself being much more forward during this past cycle, and she’s anxious to see how that approach evolves in the next year.

“I don’t wait for the ball as much anymore,” Einck said, “and when I see a short ball, I go after it without any question.”

Einck forced the issue throughout a 27-5 junior season, which brought her career record to 82-19, a .812 winning percentage.

Her postseason accom-

plishments included an Upstate Eight Conference River Division singles title, runner-up finish at the St. Charles East Sectional and a 4-2 mark at the state tournament, her third.

Vikings coach Maureen Weiler sensed big things from Einck again after she challenged eventual state singles champion Tiffany Chen of Naperville Central during a Sept. 5 road dual. Einck and Chen split the first two sets before Chen, a sophomore, captured the third, 10-8, in a super tiebreaker.

“Kirby was really attacking each player to begin with,” Weiler said. “I think that comes with maturity, a lot of experience out on the court.”

Weiler has seen Einck’s progression as an athlete and a person since her days as Einck’s eighth-grade math teacher at Geneva Middle School South. For others newer to the Einck experience, she’s just as talented and genuine.

Krueger, who matched Einck’s 2011 feat by qualifying for state in her debut season, embraced Einck’s tutelage throughout the fall.

After first encountering each other in passing while training at the Vaughan Center in Aurora as middle-schoolers, Einck and Krueger formed a welcome bond that only fueled the overall camaraderie between Geneva’s sectional team champions. “[Einck] helped me become a better player by hitting with me every day at practice,” Krueger said.

“When she knew I would be playing somebody [challenging], she would be giving me advice on what to do and how to play them.”

Naturally, Einck saw her own share of daunting competition, and experienced a season-ending state tournament loss for the third straight fall.

De La Salle’s Khalia Powell, who went on to the consolation quarterfinals, topped Einck, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a sixth-round consolation match.

“I would have really liked to win that match,” Einck said, “but I left it all out there so I really couldn’t be too disappointed.”

Einck and Powell already were acquainted from the USTA circuit when they met at state. Einck plans to compete in a USTA tournament in South Bend, Ind., this weekend, renewing an offseason pattern she always has enjoyed.

Einck hopes the cycle takes her deep into the winner’s bracket at state in 2014.

She also would like to play in college and is eager for the recruitment process to gain steam.

For now, though, Einck is not fretting about a thing, which stems from her more aggressive approach.

“I got more confident in my shot-making and I knew that I could finish the points quicker,” Einck said.

“There’s no point in staying out there longer when you can put the ball away in a shorter rally time. It’s just to save more energy, I guess.”

North’s Wright commits verbally to Kansas State ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North junior Cory Wright made a college baseball verbal commitment on Saturday to Kansas State.

Wright, a first baseman and left-handed pitcher for the North Stars, said he expects first base to be his main role with the Wildcats, a Big 12 conference member.

Energetic group qualified for state for the second time in as many seasons, advancing to the fifth round of the consolation draw.

Wright visited Kansas State last weekend, received a partial scholarship offer on Saturday morning, and committed later that day. He considered several other colleges, including Ohio State and Missouri.

STC North’s Masoncup welcomes ‘whirlwind’

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Technically, the Sean Masoncup era at St. Charles North opened when school officials named him new girls basketball coach on June 3.

Masoncup’s footprint then took greater shape with summer camp and league play, creating an effective imprint entering Monday’s first day of practice.

Masoncup doesn’t disagree on that point, but he’ll always argue there’s no better stamp on a season than when sneakers screech on hardwood for the first time in November.

“It’s nice to finally get it started,” Masoncup said. “Yeah, we had the summer, but this was the first official one. It was a whirlwind making sure all three levels had everything going, but it was a lot of fun. I thought the girls were really excited to get

out on the court.”

A North boys assistant for the past five seasons, Masoncup takes over for former coach Colleen Backer, who resigned in April after four seasons. The North Stars finished 9-20 in 2012-13.

Masoncup, who’s also North’s boys tennis coach, was a prep athlete at Geneva before turning to teaching. He has more than a decade of experience in District 303, and taught much of North’s current roster as a member of the Haines Middle School physical education and health staff – including junior Nicole Davidson and sophomore Morgan Rosencrants.

Calling tryouts “the least favorite week for a coach,” Masoncup envisions making the full scope of his workouts on display soon enough.

“It’s close right now,” he said. “With the varsity you sort of know, you have an idea, and

obviously we’re evaluating every day. But we’re starting to install stuff. … I would venture to say by the end of next week we’ll have everything in and be ready to go full speed going into the York Thanksgiving Tournament.”

Dogged pursuit: Batavia jumped from 13 to 18 victories in its second season under coach Kevin Jensen despite having a roster of just eight players.

With upperclassmen numbers again looking dicey as practices start, Jensen is prepared for a repeat.

“I’d be comfortable with it again because I know it can be done,” he said. “I’d sure love to have 10, though.”

“They were already excited anyway, but when your fall sports across the board have some nice success, it’s a lot of fun even if there aren’t all that many people who cross over,” Jensen said.

Loebel able: Shifty senior point guard Michaela Loebel, who suffered a torn ACL in the fourth game of last season, was a welcome sight at Geneva practice.

“Everybody’s healthy. Everybody worked hard. The basic kids are back,” Vikings coach Sarah Meadows said.

The Saints, though, only had time for two plays – both incompletions – before closing the half with a missed 30-yard field goal attempt.

The Patriots’ lead eventually swelled to 35-0 before East notched its lone touchdown, a 9-yard Mitchell keeper with 8:41 to play in the game.

season going 12 for 27 with 253 passing yards and two interceptions. H-back Phil Hopper (three catches, 110 yards), Barry (six catches, 72 yards) and Munroe (three catches, 76 yards) sparked the Saints’ offense.

Munroe also scooped up a fourth quarter onside kick for East, while defensive lineman Cullen Cady and linebacker Parker Vidmich – making his first appearance since a Week 2 injury – recovered fumbles for the Saints.

It was an emotional and injury-filled season for the Saints, but Robak thought East carried on impressively.

“Every person that was injured, every person that stepped up – I love them all,” Robak said. “Everybody stepped up who we needed to step up. If we would have had our starting defense [throughout the year], we would have been good, but I love every single one on this team, and everyone stepped up.”

LINCOLNSHIRE – St. Charles East football coach Mike Fields made what he considered to be a cut-and-dried decision, declining a penalty to give Stevenson a thirdand-9 rather than make it second-and-14.

“I don’t know a coach in the country that wouldn’t take third-and-9, and then they hit it for a first down,” Fields said.

“That was the story of the game.

It just kind of epitomizes the game today.

“We had guys in position to make great plays, and their guys made them, and we didn’t, and so they’ll move on. I wish them nothing but the best.

They’re a good football team.”

Patriots quarterback Willie Bourbon made a habit of saving his best moments for third and fourth downs, with plenty of help from a skillful wide receiving corps led by Cameron Green and Matt Morrissey.

“I think they got three fourth-down conversions [in the first half], and I think they probably got another five or six third downs – third-and-6, thirdand-8,” Fields said. “Those wideouts are pretty darn good, and that quarterback doesn’t have to be perfect. He can just throw it up there, and they’ll go get it.”

Talented finishers assembled in front of the net, upping the unpredictability factor on set pieces. In the run of play, speedy forwards blazed down the flank and let fly.

Just as it had seven weeks ago, Lake Park watched the skilled Saints at work and pushed to challenge and react.

The Lancers’ final gestures – triumphant shouts and pumped fists – spoke a mouthful about a 1-0 upset against top-seeded East.

“We have all the talent here, and all these guys play soccer year-round. We’ve played soccer our whole lives,” Saints senior defender Kevin Heinrich said. “I mean, it just [stinks] when you see a team score one and pack it back in. But that’s what you’ve got to do to get the win.

“We prepared for their quickness in practice, working with our outsides, and we just got the defense mentally prepared for this game,” said Lancers senior goalkeeper Steven Mack, who earned his third straight shutout.

“I always have confidence in my back line. Never really nervous with them back there. I can always count on them to help me out, and they came up huge this game.”

The Aurora Christian senior threw a touchdown pass, returned an interception for a touchdown and had three key tackles for losses from his safety position in the Eagles’ 24-3 victory over IC Catholic Prep on Saturday in a first-round, Class 3A playoff game at Lewis Field.

“It’ll go down as one of the great performances in Aurora Christian history by one player,” Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe said. “What can you say? He ran the ball well, he caught the ball well, he threw the ball well, and he tackled well. I mean, this kid

was all over the field.”

Walgren was in the right place at the right time to make the single biggest play of the game early in the third quarter.

Trailing 10-3, the Knights (6-4) took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove inside the Aurora Christian 5-yard line. On third-andgoal at the 3, Walgren tackled Randy Leslie in the backfield for a loss of 3. IC Catholic coach Bill Krefft elected to go for it on fourth down, but Walgren intercepted Jack Copher’s pass and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown.

“They were fourth-andgoal, and I was expecting the pass,” Walgren said. “It came, and I was right there. I just ran it and just went [the distance].”

Instead of potentially tying the game at 10, the Knights suddenly found themselves in a two-touchdown hole.

“That was the play of the game,” Beebe said. “That was a big one because they were driving. They were going to make it a pretty good game, and who knows then?”

Junior Austin Bray returned to start at quarterback for the Eagles (7-3) after missing three-plus games because of injuries.

He looked a little rusty early, hitting on just two of his first five passes for five yards and throwing an interception. So Beebe decided to shake things up in the second quarter by going to the Wildcat formation with Walgren taking the snaps.

But for the respective programs, it’s an important rivalry game, and the Michigan MAC Trophy is on the line.

Owens coming up big for

Rockets: He’s not at the level of NIU’s Jordan Lynch or Ball State’s Keith Wenning, but Toledo quarterback Terrance Owens is having a nice senior season, and has really come on over the past two weeks.

Owens threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s 55-16 win over Eastern Michigan, a week after throwing for three scores in the Rockets’ upset victory at Bowling Green.

Rockets coach Matt Campbell said his team needs Owens to play well the final month of the season.

“When he’s the guy that’s leading that charge,” Campbell said, “you feel really good about your football team.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Political fights among politicians are not new. Today, the rivalries are ridiculed in political cartoons and on TV sitcoms. In the past, political differences were shown in Staffordshire figures, slogans and drawings. The rivalry in Britain in the last half of the 19th century between the prime ministers Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) and William Gladstone (1810-1898) was notable. Both men were skilled politicians, but they hated each other. The two men came from very different backgrounds. Gladstone was a rich and deeply religious uppermiddle-class man educated at Eton and Oxford. Disraeli never attended a university and was a wild youth who lived extravagantly. He wrote novels, accumulated debts and then married a rich widow. Gladstone, a liberal (Whig), and Disraeli, a conservative, disagreed on both social and international policies. They called each other names, opposed each other in numerous campaigns and were able to defeat each other at times. The repeal of the Corn Laws, which lowered tariffs, the purchase of stock in the Suez Canal, the favor of Queen Victoria, and other major problems were part of their battles. Political cartoons of the time often showed the two men fighting. There were even toys that pictured the men wrestling. Several versions of the toy have been sold through the years. In 2013, Jackson’s Auctions sold a pair of 8 1/2-inch-high Gladstone and Disraeli figures in their original box for $180. *** Q: My maple armchair is marked “A Genuine Cushman Colonial Creation made in Bennington, Vt.” The words are printed in several typestyles inside an oval. ‘Free Birds’ is a real turkey

By AL ALEXANDER More Content Now Turkeys have been a part of Hollywood since filmmaking began. But a turkey about turkeys is a rare bird indeed. It takes real dumb clucks to breed poultry that paltry. But “Free Birds” corners the market.

In fact, I’m not even sure if it’s real meat. It’s more like soggy, leftover tofu. But whatever it is, it’s certainly not well done.

It’s best left for the kiddies and their less discriminating palates, although it may leave them with a sour taste for history in general and Plymouth Colony in particular. The kin of Massachusetts legends Myles Standish and William Bradford won’t be too thrilled, either, with a revisionist 3-D cartoon that portrays the former as a curmudgeonly turkey killer and the latter, a fat, self-serving blowhard. They’re the villains in a half-baked screenplay by director Jimmy Hayward (“Horton Hears a Who”) and Scott Mosier about two toms – one a nerdy, free-range know-it-all named Reggie (voiced by Owen Wilson), and the other, a muscle-brained factory bird who calls himself Jake (Woody Harrelson) – traveling back 392 years to Plymouth to stop the Pilgrims from

making turkey a Thanksgiving tradition. The bickering pair not only want to save their necks, but the wattles of every turkey that ever paid the price for our nation’s annual feast.

OK. It’s a cute idea, one full of infinite possibilities for humor and cleverness. But Hayward and Mosier simply turn it into a dumb, derivative war picture pitting a rebellious flock of guerilla turkeys, led by the angry bird, Broadbeak (the mellifluous Keith David), against their ravenous oppressors, the Pilgrims. It’s all very “Avatar,” capped by a climactic battle straight out of “Lord of the Rings” in which spear-toting birds march selflessly into a hail of cannon fire.

Why the Pilgrims would want to make cannon fodder of their potential dinner is almost as confounding as how the thumbless turkeys managed to fashion spears out of knives and branches. But then nothing about “Free Birds” makes sense – or laughs.

It’s more about awful puns, juvenile jokes and shameless product placements, most notably Chucky Cheese, which – thanks to a talkative time machine named S.T.E.V.E. (George Takei) – may get the chance to cater the first Thanksgiving. Imagine how fat our vastly overweight nation would be if we’d dined on pizza instead of

turkey the past 392 Thanksgivings.

Perish the thought – just like Hayward and Mosier perished any attempts at being original.

Everything they serve tastes like stale leftovers, including the obligatory love story between the Joan of Arclike warrior Jenny (Amy Poehler) and her milquetoast admirer, Reggie.

The only thing remotely clever arrives in the film’s opening minutes set in the 21st century, when every turkey except Reggie has been snowed into believing that getting their heads chopped off is a blessed rite of passage.

Terrific, I thought, they’re going to use the birds as a metaphor for stupid, uninvolved Americans. No such luck.

It’s a lost opportunity almost as disappointing as the blah, lackluster animation, which looks flat even in 3-D. So, if you feel like you must go, save some money and see it in regular 2-D. But you’d fare even better if you skipped it altogether and used the cash to buy a big, fat turkey you can eat instead of one you can only watch.

High blood pressure, clogged arteries lead to heart failure Dear Doctor K: My husband has heart failure. His doctor often uses the term “ejection fraction.” Can you explain what this means?

Dear Reader: Before I explain what an ejection fraction is, let’s say what “heart failure” is, and isn’t. Many of my patients think that heart failure means a heart that stops pumping completely.

But that’s not heart failure; that’s sudden death.

Heart failure can lead to a range of symptoms, from fatigue and shortness of breath to a buildup of fluid in the body. With heart failure, the heart is still pumping – it’s just not pumping effectively enough to completely do the job the rest of the body needs it to do.

What is that job? Every cell in the body needs a constant supply of nutrition (sugar, fat and oxygen) and needs to eliminate waste.

In that sense, every cell in our body is just like us.

The heart pumps nutrition-rich blood out to the body, and as the blood delivers the nutrition, it picks up the waste. The heart also pumps blood through the lungs to receive a fresh supply of oxygen.

The heart has four chambers. Two chambers, called the atria, receive

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff blood. Two larger chambers, the ventricles, pump blood out to the lungs and the rest of the body.

That’s how a healthy heart works. However, disease (particularly high blood pressure and clogged arteries), injury, and years of wear and tear can take their toll. Heart failure is usually a gradual decline in the heart’s ability to pump. Sometimes heart failure begins suddenly, such as when someone has a heart attack that kills a part of the heart muscle.

Whether it begins gradually or suddenly, in many cases of heart failure the muscle tissue in the heart’s left ventricle becomes thin and weak. It can’t contract strongly enough to send sufficient blood throughout the body.

Which brings us to ejection fraction. A low ejection fraction is a defining characteristic of a common type of heart failure called systolic heart failure. An ejection fraction is a measurement of the

volume of blood pumped out of the left ventricle each time the heart contracts, expressed as a percentage of the total amount of blood expelled. (I’ve put an illustration of ejection fraction on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Even a healthy heart doesn’t expel its full contents at every beat. A normal ejection fraction lies in the range of 55 percent to 65 percent.

A doctor can measure ejection fraction with an echocardiogram.

This test uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart.

The resulting video can determine ejection fraction.

The ability to measure the ejection fraction has helped doctors more precisely determine the effectiveness of treatment, and the best type of treatment. It also helped doctors to discover a second type of heart failure that we now recognize as another common type: diastolic heart failure. But that’s a topic for another column.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and never had a steady girlfriend. About three weeks ago, I met a really nice girl at my cousin’s wedding. The way to a female’s heart is through her funny bone. Girls love a guy with high entertainment value. You don’t have to be a comedian. Just tell her a funny story about you, your family or your friends. Guys don’t have to look like a rock star if they can attract females with their humor.

2. Send or bring her flowers. Females love receiving them. Find out what some of her favorite flowers are, and send or bring some from the florist, the produce department of the grocery store or from your backyard garden.

3. Ride in style. You don’t have to drive a Porsche or a Ferrari to impress a female, but make sure your wheels are clean and well-pol-

4. Send her little notes. They love getting personal notes. Don’t make them long or mushy. Short, but sweet will let her know you’re thinking of her.

5. Cook dinner for her. Girls love to see guys in the kitchen. If you’re not comfortable in the kitchen, order a pizza or buy a carryout dinner and serve it in your kitchen (or take it to her house). And if she invites you to her house, be sure you help her in the kitchen.

6. Shop till you drop.

One of the best ways to get closer to a female is to go shopping with her for clothes. Help her find that special something that she looks good in, and you will win her heart.

7. Be nice to her family and friends.

These people close to her are the most important people in her life.

8. Compliment non-obvious things about her. You know that she is beautiful and has a marvelous smile.

9. No matter what you two are doing, make it seem as if it is the most important thing in the world at the moment because you are with her.

10. Be creative and original. Whatever you do, if you are bored, she’s bored, and you’ll be history. Show her the time of her life.

And, perhaps most important, learn from her ex! He was a control freak. Don’t make that mistake. Respect this young woman.

I then extended an invitation to my other sister, “Marilyn,” and her husband if they had no plans. Marilyn told me later that her daughter, sonin-law and two grandchildren will be coming in from out of town, so I assumed they’d be celebrating Thanksgiving at her house.

When Marilyn asked me if they were included I said no, that the invitation was for her and her husband if they had no plans. Now she is furious with me and won’t talk to me. I already have my children coming over and that will be 10 guests, which is as many as I can accommodate. Who is right here? – Thanksgiving Hostess Dear Hostess: You are. to entertain the rest of her family.

It is your right to control your guest list, not hers.

More often it’s the child whose self-esteem is fragile to begin with who becomes the victim.

Children learn self-esteem from the way their parents treat them.

Tell your children you love them, talk to them, read to them, listen to them and give them your undivided attention. And when they do something right, praise them.

If you teach your children respect for others and how to be independent, they will be less likely to be bullied.

When they are old enough to have unsupervised access to their cellphones and online activities, you should also monitor them for any indication that they are being harassed or harassing another

At the bridge table, suppressing knowledge about responder’s redouble can cause grief.

The other day, we learned that after the opener bids one of a suit and the next player makes a takeout double, responder’s redouble promises at least 10 high-card points and denies good support for partner’s suit.

In today’s deal, you will see that responder redoubles, then supports his partner’s heart suit.

This shows exactly three-card support and game-invitational values, 10-12 support points and eight losers. (With a stronger hand, responder would jump-rebid three hearts, a game force.)

Opener leaps to four hearts.

Note that opener’s second-round pass was forcing.

Either the opening side buys the contract or the intervening side plays in something doubled for penalty. And if South had immediately rebid in hearts, it would have shown a minimum (or subminimum) opening bid. Also, East’s two-diamond advance promised no strength. He was just indicating a preference for that suit over spades and clubs.

Against four hearts, West leads the diamond queen. East takes dummy’s king with his ace, cashes the diamond 10, then shifts to a spade. How should South continue?

West surely has the spade king for his double. So, South is threatened with four losers: one spade, one heart and two diamonds. He should win with his spade ace, cash the club king, play a club to dummy’s queen, and discard the spade queen on the club ace. Then he leads a trump and claims shortly thereafter.
