Firefighters from Geneva and St. Charles work Monday afternoon to extinguish a brush fire in a wooded area adjacent to Oak Hill Cemetery and Good Templar Park in Geneva.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of a brush fire that broke out Monday afternoon near Oak Hill Cemetery.

Geneva firefighters responded to the fire about 3 p.m. in a patch of woods next

to the cemetery, which is off Route 25 in Geneva. A fence divides the city-owned cemetery from the woods, and nothing at the cemetery was damaged.

It took about 15 minutes to put out the fire, Geneva Fire Deputy Chief Mark Einwich said. The fire was called in by a passerby, he said.

Geneva seeks state input on Rt. 31 improvements

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously approved sending a letter of request on Monday to the state department of transportation for consideration of Route 31 improvements, including traffic calming enhancements and bicycle lanes.

The proposed “road diet” would reduce four lanes of the state route from to two lanes between Elizabeth Place and the entrance of Fabyan Forest Preserve south of Fargo Boulevard.

It also would have center turning lanes and bicycle lanes.

As the lanes are more narrow than standard lane widths, reducing four to two

lanes would give vehicles wider lanes, officials said.

Fifth Ward Alderman Tom Simonian said the Illinois Department of Transportation is scheduled to resurface Route 31 in the spring.

If the city’s request is supported by both the state and the community, it would amount to “a change order” on the road striping after the resurfacing.

“Route 31 is a white-knuckled racecar experience,” said Simonian, who lives on Route 31. “I don’t know of anybody that [drives] eight across. ... They are always staggered on Route 31.”

He said the other benefit of adding bike lanes is so they can connect to the bike

Mayor Kevin Burns said city officials will look at any opportunity to improve its roadways.

“We hope that our friends at IDOT look favorably upon our request,” Burns said.

“And most importantly, we look forward to hearing from the community before making any formal decision.

The community will determine – pure and simple – if they want the council to support this or not.”

Once a diagram of how the lanes would be striped is available for the public to look at, then public input will be sought, he said.

Simonan said he sent direct mail to 267 homes near Route 31 and 70 percent to 80 percent were in favor.

The name of the restaurant is Shakou, which is Japanese for “social life.” It will be at 312 W. Main St. in St. Charles, the former site of Magoo’s bar and grill, Shakou owner Aleks Dupor said.

Dupor said the restaurant will serve sushi and modern Japanese cuisine. He hopes to open the St. Charles location by the next St. Charles Restaurant Week, which is scheduled for the last week of February.

“We’re bringing a city vibe to the suburbs,” Dupor said

Monday at the St. Charles Government Operations Committee meeting.

The committee voted 7-2 in favor of recommending the St. Charles City Council grant a Class B liquor license to the business.

Fourth Ward aldermen Jim Martin and Jo Krieger continued their longstanding practice of voting no on liquor license requests.

Dupor said he fell in love with St. Charles as soon as he visited the city and wants the St. Charles location to be identical to his Libertyville location. St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said he visited that location with Matthew O’Rourke, the city’s economic development division manager, and was impressed.

“This will be a much-needed shining light in that building,” Rogina said.

Dupor said he plans to open the third Shakou location in Barrington a few months after the St. Charles location opens.

Batavia aldermen ask Attorney General’s Office to investigate Prairie State

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen on Monday formally requested the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the Prairie State Energy Campus.

Batavia aldermen unanimously approved a resolution that calls for Attorney General Lisa Madigan to “conduct an investigation and audit of the Prairie State Project agreements and communities to determine whether the city of

Batavia was given full and accurate information about the Prairie State Project before the time it entered into the agreements and whether any affirmative, material misrepresentations or material omissions were made in the presentation of information to the city of Batavia with respect to the Prairie State Project.”

Aldermen at a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting in September unanimously recommended the city should ask Madigan to conduct an in-

vestigation. The action follows on the heels of Batavia businessman Joe Marconi recently filing a class-action lawsuit in Kane County Circuit Court over the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus.

Residents in October repeated their call for the city to ask Madigan to investigate Prairie State Energy Campus.

“The details of who knew what [and] when is still not known today,” said resident Betsy Zinser at the time. Zins-

er and others presented a letter to aldermen signed by more than 1,000 residents calling for an investigation.

In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a longterm power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State. Geneva and Rochelle are other members.

Through its power sales agreement with NIMPA, Batavia is obligated to buy 45.8 percent, or about 55 megawatts, of the power generated by Prai-

rie State. Geneva is obligated to buy 29.2 percent (35 megawatts), and Rochelle is obligated to buy 25 percent (30 megawatts).

Earlier this year, state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, asked Madigan to investigate Prairie State Energy Campus. Schmitz had said the letter reflected his concern regarding cost overruns on the $5 billion project and the impact on participating communities that might have to pass the cost along to ratepayers.

DECISION DAY 2014 Record number of absentee ballots cast

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Many residents plan to head to the polls for today’s general election, but some residents already have created a record turnout with their absentee ballots.

A total of 7,621 absentee ballots were applied and issued for the general election, according to data from the Kane County Clerk’s Office.

That is the highest number of absentee ballots distributed in Kane County for a midterm or gubernatorial election, not including Aurora Election Commission totals.

The clerk’s office issued 5,761 absentee ballots in 2010 and 2,985 absentee ballots in 2006, according to data from the office. During this election, voters will decide between incumbent Democrate Gov. Pat Quinn, newcomer Republican candidate Bruce Rauner, and Libertarian candidate Chad Grimm.

When this year’s grace period and early voting sites from non-Aurora Kane County locations are included, a total of 31,152 have been cast as of Monday morning, with the clerk’s office awaiting 3,655 ballots from voters.

Most of the outstanding absentee ballots are mail ballots, according to the data.

“There are quite a few [referendums] on the ballot,” Kane County Clerk John Cunningham said Monday. “I hope people are voting out of knowledge rather than out of anger.”

There are three statewide advisory questions on the ballot. One question asks if the minimum wage for

The second asks if any health insurance plan in Illinois that provides prescription drug coverage should be required to include prescription birth control as part of that coverage. The third question asks if the Illinois Constitution should be amended to require each school district receive additional revenue, based on their number of students, from an additional 3 percent tax on incomes greater than $1 million.

There also are a few local referendums in Kane County. Batavia voters will consider a ballot measure to fund capital improvements throughout Batavia School District 101.

Another local race resulting in yard signs and discussion is that of Kane County sheriff. Kane County Sheriff Lt. Willie Mayes Sr. hopes to replace fellow Democrat and outgoing Sheriff Pat Perez. His opponent is former Kane County Sheriff’s Office Administrator Don Kramer.

The County Board District 11 seat also is up for election between Republican John Martin and Democrat Mar-

tha Hanna.

The U.S. Senate race on Illinois ballots is between longtime incumbent Dick Durbin and current state Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, and Libertarian candidate Sharon Hansen of Pontiac.

Other federal races include 6th District, incumbent Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, and Democrat Michael Mason; 11th District, incumbent Bill Foster, D-Naperville, and Republican Darlene Senger; and District 14, incumbent Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and Democrat Dennis Anderson of Gurnee.

The race for state representative in Illinois District 50 includes Republican Keith Wheeler of Oswego and Democrat Valerie Burd of Yorkville.

SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Township Community Building became a place of play Sunday for an event benefiting former Sugar Grove Public Library director Beverly Holmes Hughes.

Organized by Debbie DeBoer and her family, the Halloween party fundraiser featured arts and crafts activities and several games.

Hughes – who is being treated for glioblastoma multiforme, a common and aggressive form of brain cancer – sat near the entrance, occasionally standing for hugs.

“It’s just wonderful for them to do this,” Hughes said.

DeBoer, who got to know Hughes through the library, said organizing the event aligns with her family’s goal of doing one service project a year. Past projects have included a toy collection and clothes closet, she said.

“They’re not going to know how to volunteer if they’re not shown,” DeBoer said of her sons, 13 and 10.

Although the Halloween party fundraiser had no sponsors and the games were half homemade, half store-bought, it had strong volunteer support from Kaneland High School. About 20 basketball players, including sophomore Brett Glennon and freshman Josh Marczuk, manned the games.

Adam Wickness, who coaches the freshmen, said it was their pleasure to help.

The teens eagerly agreed to the commitment, which

“speaks volumes” about the quality of their character, he said.

“They’re doing fantastic,” DeBoer said.

DeBoer previously said she would like to see 200 children at the two-hour event and raise at least $2,000. While attendance had not yet hit that benchmark in the first half-hour, she said the event was a win nonetheless.

“People here are having a blast,” she said.

Hughes is undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

Proceeds from the fundraiser were to go directly to the “Beverly Holmes Hughes Fund” at Castle Bank in Sugar Grove.

WAYNE – When Ken Shepro stopped burning leaves on his gravel driveway Saturday morning, the pile seemed fully extinguished.

But apparently something was still hot, he said, as his property became the site of a fire Sunday night that required the response of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District and three other departments.

“We had basically a brush fire in the woods that was pretty scary for a while,” said Shepro, who also serves as the attorney for the Fox River district.

“Thank God for the neighbors and passersby who called the fire in because we didn’t know anything about it.”

Firefighters arrived at the residence, which is in the 33W500 block of Army Trail Road in Wayne, about 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

By then, Fox River Chief Greg Benson said, the east wall of a detached garage was on fire, as were up to two acres of land. Firefighters started with the garage before making sure the fire didn’t spread to neighboring structures, such

as barns and houses, he said.

Crews reportedly worked to control the fire, which extended into a heavily wooded area, from multiple access points and horse trails.

The fire was under control by 8:30 p.m., and units cleared the scene about 9:30 p.m., the district reported.

Damage was limited to the garage wall and was estimated at $1,000, Benson said.

He said the situation highlights the importance of making sure all outside fires are fully extinguished and open burn guidelines are followed.

In a post dated Friday, Rick Nagel – a contract employee who runs Kane County Connects – wrote he is “pulling the plug on the opinion page,” which began Oct. 10.

Kane County Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, was among those who called such content “inappropriate.”

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said last week the “letters to the editor” experi-

ment was intended to end in October, after which it would be evaluated.

Nagel is expected to make his monthly report about Kane County Connects to the Executive Committee on Wednesday.

Northern Illinois Food Bank kicks off holiday meal program

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – More than 200 volunteers descended upon the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva on Saturday, operating with assembly-line precision with the goal of filling 10,000 boxes with nonperishable items for the agency’s annual Holiday Meal Box program.

Volunteers first unpacked the food items, organized them by type, then repacked them into each holiday dinner box. Each box was taped shut and stacked onto a pallet.

Once the pallet was full, another volunteer wrapped all the boxes together in plastic wrap – so they would not tumble over – and another volunteer used a forklift to move them.

“Everything you need for a turkey dinner, our traditional holiday dinner,” Lake said.

“Today, we’re packing all of the dry items.”

Dry items for each box includes potato mix, stuffing mix, gelatin, coffee, canned vegetables and fruits, a dessert and gravy, she said.

“Throughout the next two months, those boxes will be distributed at our partner pantries with a turkey,” Lake said. “And that entire meal will feed up to eight people.”

The partner pantries will provide the dinner boxes for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or both, depending on how

they serve their communities, she said.

Many of Saturday’s volunteers came from sponsoring companies, including Alpha Baking Company, The Hillshire Brands Company, Jewel-Osco, Mariano’s, Meijer and Tyson Foods, she said.

Northern Illinois Food Bank serves 13 counties, including Kane, providing food to 71,000 people each week, she said.

Filling these holiday dinner boxes will be integrated into the agency’s daily volunteer sessions throughout the next two months, Lake said.

Former exchange teacher returns to Batavia

Hongyan Sheng, a resident of Taiyuan, the capital of the Shanxi province in northern China, was at Hoover-Wood Elementary School in Batavia on Friday.

“I think it was a good time to come back and visit,” Sheng said. “It feels just like yesterday – some of the teachers can’t believe I have a kid.”

Joe W. Meadows “Papa Joe”, age 79, of Geneva passed away Friday October 31, 2014, at his home, surrounded by family.

He was born January 17, 1935, in Caraway, Arkansas the son of George and Bertha (Hooker) Meadows.

Joe served his country in the US Army. He worked for 44 years in customer service for St. Charles Kitchens retiring as Customer Service manager. He then went to work for The Vacation Club. He loved to travel especially to Puerta Vallarta. Joe loved working in his garden. He was a wonderful father and loving grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his children, Beth Meadows of Geneva and David Meadows of Chicago; grandchildren, Madeline (Dustin) Zeitler and Jonathan Allerton both of Geneva; great grandchild, Ella Grace Zeitler; sisters, Emma (Horace) Lindley of OK, Marline (DeWayne) Sullivan of Simpson, IL and Brenda (Wayne) Pickett of AR; brothers, Larry (Lois) Meadows of KS, Cary (Earlene) Meadows of OK and Garry (Carolyn) Meadows of AR; he is also survived by his children’s mother, Della Deutsch of Geneva; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Geneva student to perform in Holocaust-era opera Know more

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kaia Ebel, a 12-year-old sixth-grader at Geneva Middle School North, will be performing in Petite Opera’s “Brundibár,” a children’s opera written in 1938

by Jewish composer Hans Krása during the Nazi occupation of what is now the Czech Republic.

“Brundibár” initially was designed to bring hope and a sense of purpose and unity to children of an orphanage in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, according to Petite Opera’s website.

The music by Krása and the lyrics by Adolf Hoffmeister were smuggled into Terezín, Kaia Ebel also called 12 of Geneva Thereseinstadt, a concentration camp in the Czech Republic.

The Nazis had children perform the opera 55 times in order to deceive the outside world into thinking the Jews were being treated humanely, Petite Opera spokeswoman Amanda Murphy said.

A parable of hope and justice, the opera was set against the brutal realities of the Holocaust, she said.

Kaia plays the lead role of the Dog – but she also will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform with Holocaust survivor Ela Weissberger, one of 132 children who survived Terezín and one of the last surviving “Brundibár” cast members who performed in the concentration camp.

About 15,000 children died at Terezin, Murphy said.

Weissberger, 84, of New York will participate in Petite Opera’s eight performances during the weekends of Nov. 7 to Nov. 22 at Mary Wilson House Beyer Auditorium, 306 S. Prospect Ave., Park Ridge.

Weissberger will share her life experiences during the Holocaust, Terezin and “Brundibár,” Murphy said.

“This is kind of a big deal,” Murphy said. “She has not seen or been part of this since 2004 and has not been on stage in 70 years.”

Nostalgia has kept the prices high for things that bring back memories of the old-fashioned drugstore soda fountain. A white ceramic Crawford’s Cherry-Fizz syrup dispenser with gold, orange, green and red lettering and nine cherries as decorations auctioned for $19,200 at Morphy Auction’s August 2014 sale in Denver, Pennsylvania. It was just one of the 130 syrup dispensers in the auction.

Seventy percent of them sold for more than $1,000. Prices were high because the syrup dispensers were in good to great condition and had their pumps and all other parts. A record price for a dispenser was set at the same auction: $69,000 for a Pepsi-Cola syrup urn in excellent condition that we think resembles pieces of 1904 Roseville pottery by Frederick Hurten Rhead. *** Q: Years ago, I bought an old wooden dictionary stand. It’s about 3 feet tall, has angled sides and two lower shelves. There’s a small metal plate on the bottom shelf that reads “Baker Office Furniture Co., Pittsburg, Pa.” There is no “h” in Pittsburg. Can you tell me something about it so I can pass it on to younger family members? Does it have any value?

A: Your dictionary stand was made between 1891 and 1911. Pennsylvania’s city of Pittsburg was chartered in 1816 and the spelling of the name changed a few times. In 1891, the United States Board on Geographic Names ruled that the official spelling was without an “h.” The decision was reversed in 1911. Q: I bought six silver spoons at a garage sale a couple of years ago. They are 5 1/2 inches long and have a dragon on the front. They are marked on the back with “DK” in a diamond and “E.P.” I tried to find information on these but had no luck. Can you tell me how old they are and how much they’re worth?

A: The letters “E.P.” stand for electroplate, a method of coating metal with a layer of silver that uses electric current. The mark “DK” may be for D.K. & Co., a company in Japan. Dragons are popular Japanese decorations. We found a pair of silver seafood forks marked “DK” decorated with pagodas for sale online for $30. Your spoons probably were made after 1930. Value of your set of six spoons: about $75. *** Q: I discovered some old wooden tennis rackets while going through some old things. They’re from the 1970s and are in good condition with no broken strings. Are they are collectible?

A: Almost anything associated with tennis is collected, including vintage rackets, metal cans that held balls, covers, presses, programs, etc. Early tennis rackets were made of layers of wood glued together and strung with gut. Metal rackets became popular in the late 1960s. Some collectors look for rackets made before 1920, some for racquets from a certain maker or endorsed by a professional player, and some for endorsed racquets that include a photo decal of the player.

Failure of the rocket raises doubt deeper on U.S. space policy BLOOMBERG NEWS Accidents happen. That’s especially true of space flight, one of humankind’s more complicated and dangerous endeavors, and it’s a truth that was spectacularly illustrated last week when a rocket blew up ferrying supplies to the International Space Station.

The rocket was supplied by Orbital Sciences Corp., which has a $1.9 billion contract with NASA to shuttle cargo to the station. The investigation into the explosion is sure to raise questions about the role of the private sector in carrying out U.S. space policy. But it’s also worth asking an underlying question: What exactly is U.S. space policy?

Since Richard Nixon’s administration, dreaming up a new mission for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has sustained a minor industry: colloquium after symposium, study after report, advisory council after task force, all trying to find a new animating purpose for American spaceflight.

President Barack Obama’s contribution to the canon, the Augustine Commission report, offered yet another vision. It outlined a plan whereby private companies, such as Orbital Sciences and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, could increasingly handle humdrum trips to low-Earth orbit, while NASA could be freed to dream big and develop new spacefaring technologies, with a long-term goal of getting to Mars.

Obama has never shown much enthusiasm for the space program. But to his credit, he heeded the committee’s recommendation to sustain human spaceflight. And the path he articulated in 2010 – get to an asteroid first, aim to orbit Mars in the 2030s, let the private sector do its thing – seemed rational and calculated.

But while rationality and calculation may get a spacecraft off the ground, they don’t persuade members of Congress to pay for it. Even worse, Congress has grafted onto Obama’s plan some vestigial elements of his predecessor’s space vision, including an extravagantly expensive new NASA-designed rocket. And landing on an asteroid, it turns out, is much harder than most people thought.

In sum – as a depressing report from the National Research Council recently made clear – the current approach to getting humans to Mars is fundamentally unworkable.

And any more realistic strategy will require far more money.

The chief appeal of the space program has always been a romantic one: the dazzling possibilities of traversing other worlds and exploring new frontiers. In a time of diminished ambition and tightened budgets, however, making that case is getting harder. Convincing the public to support an expansive new mission for NASA will require a compelling vision and an urgent purpose. At the moment, the U.S. has neither.

Vikings, Indians to reboot after 6 years

On Saturday at Burgess Field, he’ll see a different kind of symmetry in Rockton Hononegah counterpart Tim Sughroue.

The Vikings and Indians will meet in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs six years to the day after Geneva’s 46-28 victory in the same stage of the 2008 postseason.

“He’s still there. Go figure. And so am I,” Wicinski said. “Who would have thunk it? The thing is, we both do the same stuff, and hopefully we do it better than we did in ’08.”

Geneva advanced to the 7A state title game that fall, with its playoff run beginning with a home win against Rolling Meadows of the Mid-Suburban East. Six years later, the Vikings opened the playoffs with a 41-27 home win against Rolling Meadows’ Mid-Suburban East counterpart, Hersey.

In both cases, the Vikings braced for a old-fashioned, wing-T attack from Hononegah. Sam Ballano, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior, leads the 2014 version, and rushed for 188 yards on 25 carries in the Indians’ 25-14, first-round victory against Rockford Auburn.

It was Ballano’s 10th consecutive 100-yard game.

That’s the kind of consistency Wicinski also preaches. This weekend, he’ll seek it from a Geneva team whose seniors were sixth-graders when the Vikings and Indians last met.

“We’re always in the vicinity of each other,” Wicinski said. “If [Sughroue had] won, we’d have played, or if I’d have won, we’d have played. So we just happened to hit again six years later.”

By Claussner’s count, she, John and senior forward Kyra Washington were among East’s first college basketball recruits since former Saints guard Lexi Baltes moved on to Illinois Wesleyan in 2010.

“We’re definitely all three very excited, and I think that’s added to the excitement for this year,” said John, a forward. “It’s like, ‘All right, we’re good enough to go on to the next level, so let’s go and have the best season we possibly can have.’ ” That pursuit officially started Monday, when practices opened statewide. At East, Claussner (Washington University in St. Louis), Washington (Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) and John (Ave Maria of the NAIA) toted an advanced level of enthusiasm – if not higher education just yet – to the floor.

“It’s great, and it just shows that we have a lot of good talent coming in and we’re going to be a great team this year,” Claussner said.

John was the most recent of the three to seal her college plans, committing to Ave Maria last month.

The small, Catholic university located near Naples, Florida, satisfied two criteria.

Along with its location in her family’s longtime vacation state, Ave Maria more closely fit the atmosphere John embraced during her private school upbringing in Champaign.

Ave Maria’s total enrollment exceeded 1,000 for the first time entering the 2014-15 school year.

“My adjustment to St. Charles East was very difficult for me because it was just a big school,” John said. “I went from 50 kids in my grade to 500. .. Just getting back to what I was comfortable with helped lead me to Ave.”

St. Charles East senior forward Chloe John recently committed to NAIA program Ave Maria (Fla.), giving the Saints three college recruits this season.

East’s three collegians-to-be figure to benefit from what projects as a tight race in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division, where co-defending champion Batavia graduated standout guard Liza Fruendt but still returns much of its starting lineup.

Geneva – which shared the league title with Batavia – finished fourth in the Class 4A state tournament, while St. Charles North adds 6-foot2 post and Montini transfer Claire Jakaitis to an experienced core.

‘Fired up’ at Geneva: Forward Janie McCloughan elevated quickly into a prominent role at Geneva after earning a promotion from the sophomore team early in the

2012-13 season.

She averaged 11 points and six rebounds a game as a junior last season, helping the Vikings to a fourth-place finish in Class 4A. Her experience aside, McCloughan still checked off a new milestone Monday afternoon.

“It’s just a whole different feeling being a senior on the team and being a leader and everything,” she said.

Among others, Geneva returns top frontcourt players Grace Loberg (sophomore) and Abby Novak (senior) alongside McCloughan.

Loberg, also a girls volleyball standout, averaged a teambest 13.9 points and 9.1 rebounds in just 24 games last

season.

Couple that with coach Sarah Meadows’ usual enthusiasm, and the Vikings were brimming with optimism Monday.

“I admit, it wasn’t like we knew we were going to go to state or anything,” McCloughan said. “Just with something like that where you know you have potential and you reach it, it just gets you fired up.”

Order in the court: Along with its girls basketball fanfare, Monday brought the final tune-up practices for the St. Charles East, Geneva, Burlington Central, Rosary, St. Francis and Wheaton Academy girls volleyball teams before respective sectional semifinals today.

In several cases, basketball coaches yielded the early afternoon time slot to their fellow net minders on the volleyball team, adding a few more ticks to the countdown clock.

“Of course, I want volleyball to go as far as possible, but I want basketball to start right away,” Claussner said.

Geneva coaches and athletes took advantage of the school’s cavernous contest gym, which, when partitioned, can house three practices simultaneously. Varsity and freshman basketball flanked varsity volleyball, which held the center area.

“It was definitely a little crazy with people running around everywhere,” McCloughan said.

The Geneva sophomores practiced later in the day, McCloughan said.

Cubs have gone 106 seasons without a World Series title.

That didn’t seem to faze Maddon, a two-time American League Manager of the Year with the Tampa Bay Rays. It never does at Cubs’ news conferences introducing the latest victim. Every new manager thinks he’s the one who can slay the fire-breathing dragon.

Every one of them leaves with singed eyeballs.

“This moment – Nov. 3, 2014 – is an entirely different moment than any moment that’s proceeded it,” Maddon said. “It’s up to us to capture this moment and project it forward like we think we can.”

It’s not cool anymore to point out the franchise’s bad history. We’re no longer supposed to talk about the past as it pertains to the Cubs because everything is new, different, improved. Part of that, I suppose, is a matter of the students wanting to impress the teacher, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein.

Lauren Wiltsie has the stature of a defensive specialist but the productivity of one of the area’s premier hitters.

The Burlington Central senior outside hitter stands only 5-foot-6, yet is the top attacking threat for the Rockets, who will face Dixon in tonight’s IHSA Class 3A Rochelle Sectional semifinal.

Wiltsie acknowledged giving away several inches yet still being able to pound through and around blockers is especially gratifying.

“It’s really nice, having 6-foot hitters coming up to block me but me going around it,” Wiltsie said. “It gets me more pumped, gives me more energy because I know they are good on the other side but I know I can be better and try to hit around it, full shot, tip, anything.”

Wiltsie, also one of Central’s top servers, provided the Rockets a jolt in Thursday’s threegame, regional championship victory against Kaneland. She missed Central’s regional semifinal match with a left foot injury after stepping on a girl’s foot awkwardly late in the regular season, but Wiltsie rushed back to power the Rockets past the Knights, leading Central with 10 kills on the night.

Wiltsie said she has a vertical leap of about 26 inches, which helps her compensate for her lack of height.

“I give credit to my setter for really moving the sets, but it’s more of my approach is my main thing, swinging my arms,” Wiltsie said. “I’ve been working on my vertical [jump] for the past three, four years, so that gives me my advantage.

I’ve been doing my best to be smarter and hitting higher.”

Teammate Aly DeTamble, also a key part of the Rockets’ regional conquest, called it “an honor” to play with Wiltsie, and not just because of her versatile skill set.

“She’s such a smart player,” DeTamble said. “She’s a diamond out there. Everyone looks up to her. She’s a great leader on the floor. I can’t imagine not playing with her. She’s just amazing.”

Somebody check Joe Maddon’s contract. Judging by his introductory news conference, there’s a good chance the Cubs are paying him by the word.

On a manic Monday, the North Side’s newest hipster sprayed to all fields in what felt like one big, caffeinated run-on sentence. He talked about “magical” Wrigley Field; about The Cousin Eddie, his recreational vehicle; about the “talented young players” his new team has collected; about his desire to live downtown, not in “a gated community”; and about “Gladiator” (the movie, not the disgraced former Cubs power hitter who said he bulked up using Flintstones vitamins).

Maddon is fresh, enthusiastic and innocent. He also has no idea. He knows a lot about baseball, but he has no idea, understand? Nobody does who hasn’t been in the middle of this living, breathing tragedy we know as the Cubs.

But the 60-year-old certainly is excited.

“Sixty’s the new 40,” he said.

Great, but Dusty Baker was 57 going on 75 after four seasons of managing the Cubs.

Lou Piniella was 66 going on where’s-my-mobility-scooter when he left Chicago. The chances of Maddon exiting our fair city looking drawn and haunted as Baker and Piniella did are very, very good. That’s not opinion.

That’s just statistical probability. Call me Mr. Analytics.

Ah, but let’s give the warm, engaging Maddon a fair chance. He’s not Dusty or Lou. He’s an excellent manager.

And nothing else has worked.

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Although Halloween came the day before, Daniel Santacaterina and Pace Temple put on their best superhero costumes in Geneva’s 41-27 win Saturday over Hersey in the first round of the IHSA Class 7A football playoffs.

Vikings coach Rob Wicinski called Temple and Santacaterina, Boy Wonder and Superstar, respectively, and it certainly was fitting.

Temple had a pair of interceptions – one in the first half that led to Geneva’s second touchdown; one in the fourth quarter that sealed the game for the Vikings – while Santacaterina played well under center and scored the goahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Geneva needed huge games from both players as Hersey (64) gave the Vikings (9-1) all they could handle.

Three fourth-down stands

by Geneva’s defense – two deep in its own territory – and five touchdown runs from Justin Taormina helped the Vikings win their first playoff game since 2010 and advance to a second-round matchup against Rockton Hononegah at Burgess Field.

“We struggled so much last year to get off the field on third down on defense,” Wicinski said. “The emphasis this year was to run the ball when you needed to and get off the field on third down. And we got off the field on third and fourth down.”

Although the Geneva offense rarely had a problem moving the ball, it was the Vikings’ defense that needed a huge second half to advance.

After falling behind, 14-0, early, Hersey used big plays to get back in the game, only trailing, 27-20, at halftime.

In the second half, the Huskies got a big fourth-down stop in Geneva territory and took full advantage as Joe Caputo rumbled into the end zone with 4:12 left in the third quarter to tie the score at 27.

On the next play, Will Trossen picked off Santacaterina at the 1-yard line and returned the ball 74 yards to the Geneva 26.

With momentum in hand, Hersey’s offense did nothing as

it was called for holding and a false start before four straight incompletions gave Geneva the ball back.

The Vikings took advantage, going 81 yards in 11 plays as Santacaterina scored from 2 yards out on a bootleg for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown that made it 34-27.

“We just locked down; we’re not used to giving up that many points in a half, let alone in a game,” Temple said of Geneva’s defense. “Our defense really locked down and we just said we need a stop and we’ll get a score. They did that and they came together. Stephen Kemp came up big on that last

drive with that sack and forced fumble. Everyone was just doing their job and it was just great.”

Kemp’s sack came on Hersey’s next offensive series.

Facing a third-and-5 from the Huskies’ own 39, Kemp dumped Huskies quarterback Eric Portenlanger for a huge loss that forced a punt.

With the ball back, the Vikings’ offense needed only four plays to find paydirt as Taormina scored his fifth touchdown of the game from 26 yards to give Geneva some breathing room, 41-27.

“I think this was my best game scoringwise – it was one great game,” Taormina said. “Offensive line had great blocking, our quarterback kept us in control – it was one good win. I know I’m in the shadow of them (Santacaterina, Temple); this is their team, they’re seniors. I just try to step up and produce.”

Taormina gained 157 yards on 29 carries to go along with the five scores. Santacaterina finished 15 of 21 with 167 passing yards and one interception and a rushing touchdown.

The Northern Illinoisbound quarterback also added 29 rushing yards.

ROLLING MEADOWS – Quarterback Nathan Didier ran for three touchdowns, including a 54-yard run that sealed a 34-22 victory for St. Charles North against Rolling Meadows in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs Saturday night.

With St. Charles (82) clinging to a six-point lead with only less than 30 seconds to go, the North Stars faced a third-and-10 on their own 46-yard-line. A Rolling Meadows stop and the North Stars would have to punt the ball away for one last Mustangs possession.

But a quarterback draw found Didier running free and he made it untouched into the end zone.

“It was the perfect play call,” Didier said. “I got a great block from Eric Lins. I made a cut and the Red Sea opened up and I was off to the races.”

Didier also had the only score of the game’s first half, scoring on a 2-yard run with 9:37 to play in the second quarter. His other touchdown was a 1-yard run with 3:48 to play in the third quarter.

Lins, a sophomore running back, had the other two North Stars touchdowns, scoring on runs of 5 yards and 1 yard.

Lins’ second touchdown seemed to put the game on ice, with the North Stars leading 28-6 with 6:57 to play. But two touchdowns by Rolling Meadows (7-3) in 4:38, including 70- and 42-yard pass plays from quarterback R.J. Mattucci, made for anxious moments for the North Stars’ Blue Fan Group that had made the trip to Rolling Meadows.

Running back Anthony Atencio added the other Mustangs touchdown.

ST. CHARLES – Holding up an orange parking pass to Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state cross country meet, St. Charles East boys cross country coach Chris Bosworth told his team Saturday, “This is our ticket to the state meet, I hope there are many more to come.”

The Saints had just qualified for the state meet by placing fourth at the Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional, the first trip downstate for the school’s running squad since the school was split when St. Charles North opened in 2001.

Joining East, also after a long absence from the state meet, will be the Batavia girls team, which took fourth place in the girls race. The last time the Bulldogs girls qualified for a trip downstate was in 2003, according to coach Chad Hillman.

Junior Mark Sciurba topped East runners with

an eighth-place at LeRoy Oakes and broke the 15-minute mark with a time of 14:59.9.

East had a team score of 142 points.

Hillman credited Miranda Rea, his only senior on the squad, with clinching Batavia’s state berth.

Freshman Emma Stephens (17:24.2) led the Bulldogs with an eighth-place finish.

Also earning the right to compete at Peoria’s Detweiller Park next weekend were the Batavia boys team (third place, 139 points) and Geneva girls squad (second place, 101).

Ryan Wieties’ seventh-place finish (14:59.5) paced the Bulldogs in the boys race, won by junior Keagan Smith of Huntley. Smith crossed the finish line with a time of 14:34.9.

Although only the first five teams qualified for the state meet, the top seven runners from the remaining squads also advanced. Eighteen teams competed in the races.

bitt’s fifth-place finish (14:57.1) earned him a slot along with teammate Andrew Burroughs (15:18.5), who took 18th.

The Cadets just missed qualifying for state, earning 168 points to fifth-place Huntley’s 167.

Mitchael Deamantopulos will be representing the Geneva boys squad, which came in ninth (214). The senior finished 11th with a time of 15:01.

North’s Audrey Ernst’s time of 17:07.5 in the girls race earned her a fourth-place finish and an entry in the state race.

She will be joined by the Saints’ Torree Scull (17:49.3), who qualified for her fourth trip downstate with a 14thplace finish. North (165) finish sixth and East took seventh (207).

Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer took second in the girls race, which was won by Streamwood’s Gabby Juarez (16:58.2). The Geneva runner completed the 3-mile course in 17:02.4.

In October, Nathan had 807 passing yards and 10 TDs; 4-0.

Mark was East’s number 1 runner for the team at Conference placing 8th overall with a time of 15:21 and leading the team to a UEC River Conference Championship.

He was also East’s number 1 runner for the team at Regionals, placing 2nd overall with a time of 14:55, leading the team to a Regional Championship.

Mitchael Mitchael Deamantopulos Geneva Cross Country Mitchael was 9th out of all the 16 schools in the conference championship. He was also 6th at the Nike Northside v. Southside challenge.

He has consistently been the number one runner for the team all season, even though this is his first year running cross country.

Tips on helping your child through puberty Dear Doctor K: What should I expect when my daughter goes through puberty? How can I help her as she goes through these changes?

Dear Reader: Full disclosure – I don’t have any personal or parental experience to tap into for this question. Experienced colleagues and friends always emphasize how important it is to discuss puberty with your daughter before these changes begin. She needs to know what to expect and also that these changes are perfectly normal. Otherwise, she might be frightened by the first signs of change, such as her first menstrual bleeding.

Puberty typically lasts for four or five years. In girls, it usually starts between the ages of 8 and 13. Remind your daughter that it is normal to begin puberty anywhere within this range. (But do mention it to your child’s doctor if your daughter is showing signs of puberty before age 8, or if there are no signs of puberty by age 13.)

During puberty, the whole body changes shape and size. For most girls, the first sign of puberty is breast growth. This will start with a small round lump (breast bud) under one or both nipples.

The lump will gradually grow,

This growth peaks about one year after puberty has begun. The storage of body fat also changes, so that the hips, buttocks and legs get larger while the waist seems to get smaller.

Hair grows in the pubic area, on the legs and under the arms.

Glands in the skin make more oil and sweat. Body odor and acne may become noticeable.

Most girls begin to have periods (menstruate) about two years after the start of breast development. On average, in the United States, girls get their first period around age 12 1/2. However, menstruation may start as early

as 9 years or as late as 17 years old. A girl’s first few menstrual periods tend to be irregular, until the ovaries mature and start to produce eggs regularly.

In addition to these physical changes, puberty brings emotional changes. For example, many preteens feel anxious or self-conscious about the physical changes of puberty, especially when comparing themselves with others. Your child’s moods will also change quickly and often during this time. Mood swings are normal and are probably related to changing hormone levels.

Do your best to support, encourage and guide your daughter though this new and different, but also exciting and important, time. Even if you’ve done a good job of explaining what to expect, the changes of puberty may frighten your daughter. Your ongoing explanation and reassurance are as important as your preparation of your daughter for the coming of puberty.

Dear Teens: Are you planning on attending college? If so, why?

Based on a study commissioned by Kaplan Educational Center of college-bound 11th- and 12th-graders, the most popular responses to, “Why do you plan to attend college?” were “to pursue a career goal” (50.2. percent) and “to gain an education” (42.3 percent).

How would you have answered them if you had been a part of this survey?

• Is making more money the point of college?

While 21.1 percent of the students believe college will help them get ahead, only 11.0 percent cited the goal “to make more money” as their reason for attending college.

• Do males and females view college differently?

Surprisingly, males were 39 percent more likely than females to say their motivation for going to college lay in gaining a general education. Females were 18 percent more likely than males to say they plan to attend college to pursue a career goal. However, more males (15 percent) than females (9 percent) gave making more money as their reason for going to college.

• What about going to college to have fun?

Only 9 percent of the students offered this as a reason for attending college. The same small number responded that their reason for going to college was “because I’m not ready to work” or, “I want to leave home.” While 9 percent of the males plan to go to college “to play college sports,” none of the female respondents gave that reply.

A lot of them do – approximately half, as a matter of fact. The top three reasons cited were: “to get ahead,” “it’s necessary for a good job in business” and “to make more money.” Twenty percent said they wanted to pursue an advanced degree in business; 14.5 percent plan to be a doctor; 4.5 percent want to attend law school; and 16.4 percent wanted to prepare for another specialty field.

You might feel like that when you look at today’s deal. It is the same as yesterday’s, but it has been rotated by 90 degrees. Yesterday, we discussed how to defeat three spades. But suppose that South buys it in three diamonds.

What happens with best play by both pairs?

North’s negative double showed length in both minors.

Then, over East’s cautious raise to two spades (he should have bid three spades – get to the nine-trick level with nine trumps), South’s three-diamond rebid was aggressive. He might have passed, waiting for partner to double again with sufficient values to compete at the three-level.

East-West can defeat three diamonds. West starts with his club king and continues with his club ace. This conventionally shows that West started with only those two clubs. With ace-king-third or longer, he would have led the ace at trick one. At trick two, East makes a suit-preference signal to tell West where his entry lies.

Here, East drops his 10 on the second round to show a spade entry.

Now it is simplest if West cashes his spade king before playing a second spade to his partner’s ace. Then a club lead from East promotes a trump trick for West to defeat the contract.

Note that if West shifts to a low spade at trick three, East must win as cheaply as possible and cash the second spade trick before leading a club. If East wins trick three and immediately plays a club, South can get home by discarding his second spade.
