N. Aurora Food bank kicks off holiday meal program gas station On the Web robbed at gunpoint

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – A gas station in North Aurora was robbed Thursday by three men who brandished a handgun and tied up the 20-year-old clerk before taking money and running away, police said in a statement.

Jun’s Mobile, 329 S. Lincolnway in North Aurora, was robbed about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said one suspect pointed a chrome semi-automatic handgun at the clerk and demanded money and cigarettes. After tying the clerk’s wrists, the three men fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

One suspect was described as a black man, about 5-feet, 11-inches tall, with a lean build and long dreadlocks, wearing a dark gray fleece. A second suspect was described as a black man, about 6-feet, 1-inch tall, with a lean build, and wearing a gray vest or jacket and a gray and orange baseball cap.

The third suspect, who also had the handgun, was described as a black man, about 5-feet, 7-inches tall with a husky build wearing a gray or black and white coat.

The same suspects also might be responsible for additional robberies in Aurora this week, police said.

This case remains under investigation by the North Aurora police. Anyone with information about this robbery should call the Investigations Division at 630-897-8705, ext.

Investigators would be especially interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen the suspects before the robbery or fleeing the scene. No bit of information is too small to share, police said.

GENEVA – More than 200 volunteers descended upon the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva on Saturday, operating with assembly-line precision with the goal of filling 10,000 boxes with non-perishable food for the agency’s annual Holiday Meal Box program.

Volunteers first unpacked the food items, organized them by type, then repacked them into each holiday dinner box. Each box was then taped shut and stacked onto a pallet.

Once the pallet was full, another volunteer wrapped all the boxes together in plastic wrap – so they would not tumble over – and another volunteer used a forklift to move them.

Food bank spokeswoman Donna Larkin Lake said volunteers will pack about 30,000 boxes with a holiday dinner for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

months, those boxes will be distributed at our partner pantries with a turkey,” Lake said. “And that entire meal will feed up to eight people.”

The partner pantries will provide the dinner boxes for Thanksgiving or Christmas or both depending on how they serve their communi-

ties, she said.

Many of Saturday’s volunteers came from sponsoring companies, including Alpha Baking Company, The Hillshire Brands Company, Jewel-Osco, Mariano’s, Meijer and Tyson Foods, she said.

Northern Illinois Food Bank serves 13 counties, including Kane, providing food to 71,000 people each week, she said.

Filling these holiday dinner boxes will be integrated into the agency’s daily volunteer sessions throughout the next two months, Lake said.

Sugar Grove parties for former library director with cancer

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Township Community Building became a place of play Sunday for an event benefiting former Sugar Grove Public Library director Beverly Holmes Hughes.

Organized by Debbie DeBoer and her family, the Halloween party fundraiser featured arts and crafts activities and several games.

Hughes – who is being treated for glioblastoma multiforme, a common and aggressive form of brain cancer – sat near the entrance, occasionally standing for hugs.

“It’s just wonderful for them to do this,” Hughes said.

DeBoer, who got to know Hughes through the library, said organizing the event aligns with her family’s goal of doing one service project a year. Past projects have included a toy collection and clothes closet, she said.

Although the Halloween party fundraiser had no sponsors and the games were half homemade, half store-bought,

it had strong volunteer support from Kaneland High School. About 20 basketball players, including sophomore Brett Glennon and freshman Josh Marczuk, manned the games.

Adam Wickness, who coaches the freshmen, said it was their pleasure to help. The teens eagerly agreed to the commitment, which “speaks volumes” about the quality of their character, he said.

“They’re doing fantastic,” DeBoer said.

DeBoer previously said she would like to see 200 children at the two-hour event and raise at least $2,000. While attendance had not yet hit that benchmark in the first half hour, she said the event was a win nonetheless.

“People here are having a blast,” she said.

Hughes, who is undergoing chemotherapy treatments, wasn’t sure if she’d stay for the entirety of the event. Although she is feeling good, she said, noise can overwhelm her, and she tires easily.

“My life revolves around my naps,” Hughes said.

Proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to the “Beverly Holmes Hughes Fund” at Castle Bank in Sugar Grove.

On the next play, Will Trossen picked off Santacaterina at the 1-yard line and returned the ball 74 yards to the Geneva 26.

With momentum in hand, Hersey’s offense did nothing as it was called for holding and a false start before four straight incompletions gave Geneva the ball back.

The Vikings took full advantage, going 81 yards in 11 plays as Santacaterina scored from 2 yards out on a bootleg in what proved to be the game-winning touchdown that made it 34-27.

“We just locked down; we’re not used to giving up that many points in a half, let alone in a game,” Temple said of Geneva’s defense. “Our defense really locked down and we just said we need a stop and we’ll get a score. They did

that and they came together.

Stephen Kemp came up big on that last drive with that sack and forced fumble. Everyone was just doing their job and it was just great.”

Kemp’s sack came on Hersey’s next offensive series.

Facing a third-and-5 from its own 39, Kemp dumped Huskies quarterback Eric Portenlanger for a huge loss that forced a punt.

With the ball back, the Vikings’ offense needed just four plays to find paydirt as Taormina scored his fifth touchdown of the game from 26 yards to give Geneva some breathing room, 41-27.

“I think this was my best game scoringwise – it was one great game,” Taormina said. “Offensive line had great blocking, our quarterback kept us in control – it was one good win. I know I’m in the shadow of them (San-

tacaterina, Temple); this is their team, they’re seniors.

I just try to step up and produce.”

Taormina gained 157 yards on 29 carries to go along with the five scores. Santacateri-

na finished 15 of 21 with 167 passing yards and one interception and a rushing touchdown.

The Northern Illinois-bound quarterback also added 29 rushing yards.

GENEVA – Although Halloween came the day before, Daniel Santacaterina and Pace Temple put on their best superhero costumes in Geneva’s 4127 win Saturday over Hersey in the first round of the IHSA Class 7A football playoffs.

Vikings coach Rob Wicinski called Temple and Santacaterina, Boy Wonder and Superstar, respectively, and it certainly was fitting.

Temple had a pair of interceptions – one in the first half that led to Geneva’s second touchdown; one in the fourth quarter that sealed the game for the Vikings – while Santacaterina played well under center and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Geneva needed huge games from both players as Hersey (6-4) gave the Vikings (9-1) all they could handle.

Three fourth-down stands

by Geneva’s defense – two deep in its own territory – and five touchdown runs from Justin Taormina helped the Vikings win their first playoff game since 2010 and advance to a second-round matchup against Rockton Hononegah at Burgess Field.

“We struggled so much last year to get off the field on third down on defense,” Wicinski said. “The emphasis this year was to run the ball when you needed to and get off the field on third down. And we got off the field on third and fourth down.”

Although the Geneva offense rarely had a problem moving the ball, it was the Vikings’ defense that needed a huge second half to advance.

After falling behind 14-0 early, Hersey used big plays to get back in the game, only trailing 27-20 at halftime.

In the second half, the Huskies got a big fourth-down stop in Geneva territory and took full advantage as Joe Caputo rumbled into the end zone with 4:12 left in the third quarter to tie the score at 27.

North Stars snare road win to open playoffs

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com ROLLING MEADOWS – Quarterback Nathan Didier ran for three touchdowns, including a 54-yard run that sealed a 34-22 victory for St. Charles North against Rolling Meadows in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs Saturday night.

With St. Charles (8-2) clinging to a six-point lead with just less than 30 seconds to go, the North Stars faced a third-and-10 on their own 46-yard-line. A Rolling Meadows stop and the North Stars would have to punt the ball away for one last Mus-

tang possession.

But a quarterback draw found Didier running free and he made it untouched into the end zone.

“It was the perfect play call,” Didier said. “I got a great block from Eric Lins. I made a cut and the Red Sea opened up and I was off to the races.”

Didier also had the only score of the game’s first half, scoring on a 2-yard run with 9:37 to play in the second quarter. His other touchdown was a 1-yard run with 3:48 to play in the third quarter.

Lins, a sophomore running back, had the other two North

Stars touchdowns, scoring on runs of 5 yards and 1 yard.

Lins’ second touchdown seemed to put the game on ice, with the North Stars leading 28-6 with 6:57 to play. But three touchdowns by Rolling Meadows (7-3) in 4:38, including 70- and 42-yard pass plays from quarterback R.J. Mattucci, made for anxious moments for the North Stars’ Blue Fan Group that had made the trip to Rolling Meadows.

Running back Anthony Atencio added the other Mustangs touchdown.

“We knew they would keep coming at us,” said North Stars

coach Rob Pomazak, himself a graduate of Rolling Meadows.

“I have to give credit to the Rolling Meadows coaches and players.”

Pomazak credited his defense – which recorded three sacks and an interception (from Nick Zamecnik) – with doing an outstanding job.

“They got behind us on a couple of plays and they scored TDs, but overall the defense played great,” Pomazak said.

It was the North Stars’ first playoff appearance since 2009 and was the squad’s fifth consecutive victory this season.

Lins was a workhorse for North

in the first half, carrying 15 times for 38 yards. He had nine more carries in the second half for another 32 yards.

Jayson Reckards also was key in the North Stars moving the ball throughout the game with four receptions, including a big first-down catch on a fourth-and-5 in a North Stars scoring drive.

The North Stars will take on undefeated Cary-Grove next weekend in St. Charles.

“We have an advantage for home games,” Didier said.

“We’re do planning and preparation and the place will be jumping.”

Also earning the right to compete at Peoria’s Detweiller next weekend were the Batavia boys team (third place, 139 points) and Geneva girls squad (second place, 101).

Ryan Wieties’ seventh-place finish (14:59.5) paced the Bulldogs in the boys race, won by junior Keagan Smith of Huntley. Smith crossed the finish line with a time of 14:34.9.

“Ryan, for the first time ever broke 15 minutes, that’s a 19 second PR for him. Patrick [Redmond] ran it under 15:20; [David], Morrison ran it under 15:20. That was huge, our top three running like that.”

Although only the first five

teams qualified for the state meet, the top seven runners from the remaining squads also advanced. Eighteen teams competed in the races.

Marmion’s Brady Bobbitt’s fifth-place finish (14:57.1) earned him a slot along with teammate Andrew Burroughs (15:18.5), who took 18th.

“I wanted to go out conservative and I did, but that kind of cost me with the big gap to get to the lead pack,” Bobbitt said. “I got to the lead pack but I couldn’t hang on for the last 400 meters.”

The Cadets just missed qualifying for state, tallying 168 points to fifth-place Huntley’s 167.

Mitchael Deamantopulos will be representing the Geneva boys squad, which came in ninth (214). The senior finished 11th with a time of 15:01.

North’s Audrey Ernst’s time of 17:07.5 in the girls race earned her a fourth-place finish and an entry in the state

race. She will be joined by the Saints’ Torree Scull (17:49.3), who qualified for her fourth trip downstate with a 14thplace finish. North (165) finish sixth and East took seventh (207).

Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer took second in the girls race, which was won by Streamwood’s Gabby Juarez (16:58.2). The Geneva harrier completed the 3-mile course in 17:02.4.

“I held third for like the whole race and toward the end, the two (Naperville North) girls caught up and we were running as a big pack,” Altmayer said. “We’ve run on this course so many times, I knew I could work the downhill near the end of the course, so I was just waiting for that moment and that’s where I kicked it in.”

Naperville North won both race races. The Huskies tallied 32 points in the girls race and 77 in the boys.

By THOMAS KUEBEL editorial@kcchronicle.com WHEATON – St. Francis quarterback Clint Bobowski had a night to remember Saturday, and his teammates are unlikely to soon forget it, either.

St. Francis defeated Grayslake North, 26-24, in a IHSA Class 6A first-round football playoff matchup from Kuhn Memorial Stadium behind stellar play from Bobowski.

He threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns, completing passes to a remarkable eight receivers.

Michael Shaw led all St. Francis pass catchers with six grabs for 70 yards.

“We stuck with it, grinded it out, followed our offensive line: (Quinn) Calcagno, (Spencer) Stibbe, (Cole) Cunningham, (Kevin) Killian, (Michael) Riley and (John) Vargyas have done a great job this whole year. We just

followed them right to the win,” said Bobowski, who also ran for 56 yards.

The Spartans (8-2) advance to the second round, where they will visit Lakes (9-1).

The game swung in the Spartans’ favor for good at the beginning of the fourth quarter, with the score tied at 17. On second-and-goal from the 4, Bobowski tried three quarterback keepers, including two from the 1.

Each failed to reach the end zone and the turnover on downs gave the Knights the ball back at their own 1-yard line.

But the Knights’ first offensive play resulted in a safety as Liam Marren and John Vargyas combined to stop Grayslake North running back Dami Oladunmoye behind the line of scrimmage.

The Spartans then scored a touchdown after receiving the punt on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Bobowski to

receiver Chris Smith to give the Spartans a 26-17 lead.

“The defense got a huge stop we just didn’t finish it,” Knights coach Steve Wood said of the sequence.

The Knights (6-4) cut the lead to 26-24 after an Eli Atwater 18-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Merrick Gentile, but the following onside kick was recovered by the Spartans’ Nate Zito, who finished the game with a sack, a 10-yard reception and the gameclinching onside recovery.

“It was either me or Chris Smith and I saw it coming up so I just went for it. Got it, pulled out the win,” Zito said.

Grayslake North came into the game led by Indiana-bound tailback Titus Booker, who was unavailable because of a hamstring injury suffered in the third quarter of the Knights’ Week 9 win over Woodstock North.

“We tried it a couple of times and it just wasn’t meant to be,” Wood said of Booker. Booker finished the season only 69 yards short of a 2,000 yards rushing on the year.

The Knights relied on

ST. CHARLES – Holding up an orange parking pass to next Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state cross country meet, St. Charles Cross East boys cross country coach Chris Bosworth told his team Saturday, “This is our ticket to the state meet, I hope there are many more to come.”

The Saints had just qualified for the state meet by placing fourth at the Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional, the first trip downstate for the school’s running squad since the school was split when St. Charles North opened in 2001.

Joining East, also after a long absence from the state meet, will be the Batavia girls team, which took fourth place in the girls race. The last time the Bulldogs girls qualified for a trip downstate was in 2003, according to coach Chad Hillman.

“A lot of teams treat sectionals as a total different race and you can’t do that. That’s what we kind of stressed all week,” Bosworth said. “We don’t have to change anything and we are going to be happy with the result.”

Junior Mark Sciurba topped East runners with an eighth-place at LeRoy Oakes and broke the 15-minute mark with a time of 14:59.9.

“That’s a heck of a time on this course,” noted Bosworth.

East had a team score of 142 points.

Hillman credited Miranda Rea, his only senior on the squad, with clinching Batavia’s state berth.

“It was [Rea] that really knocked it out of the park.

She was in the top 20 for us,” Hillman said. “Just two weeks ago at conference she was our sixth girl and 25th in the conference meet and now our No. 2 two and top 20 in the sectionals. She has really laid it down

The first item, No. 1, was to do our “strong” (that’s what we call exercise). No. 2 was to write her alphabet and numbers. No. 3 was to “go on an adventure” (that’s what we call walking the dog and exploring the nearby field).

Nos. 4, 5 and 6 – go to the bank, get the car washed, then go to the park to swing, slide, etc. After the park, she asked if we could go to our favorite restaurant across the street. I replied, “How did you know that was next on the list?” Her expression was priceless.

After lunch we went home and did No. 8 – another adventure, which was take the dogs for a walk again. No. 9 was painting time (what 5-year-old doesn’t like to paint?). After cleaning up it was time for No. 10, wash the dishes and Swiffer the floor.

No. 11 she could choose something to do. We spent the next two hours playing with her dolls.

At about 5:30 my daughter came to pick her up from an exhausted grandpa. Lists will be part of our routine from now on.

How should East-West card to defeat three spades? What do you think of the auction?

In the bidding, South sensibly overcalled one spade. (A few players would have intervened with one no-trump to describe their hand strength. It is much better to look for a spade fit first and keep no-trump on the back burner.)

Over one spade, West should have made a negative double to show his minor-suit length. When he passed, North made a pre-emptive jump raise to show four-card support and a weak hand. (With at least game-invitational values, North would have cue-bid two hearts.) South was tempted to bid higher, but with those potentially useless diamond honors, he wisely passed.

Against three spades, West led his heart. East wasn’t sure that it was a singleton, but just in case, she won with her ace and returned the queen, her highest heart being a suit-preference signal for diamonds, the higher-ranking of the other two side suits.

West ruffed away declarer’s heart king and shifted to his diamond five, low guaranteeing at least one honor in the suit. East won with her ace and cashed the heart jack, West discarding the club two. Now East returned a diamond to defeat the contract, although a fourth heart would have worked also.
