EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey Earlier this month, the Young Philosophers group stopped by the Kane County Chronicle newsroom for a discussion about journalism and a tour of our office.

The Young Philosophers is comprised of young home-schooled students.

The program is based on the research of author Thomas E. Wartenberg, said Young Philosophers parent helper Christina Ogan.

“Leo Heska got the group going,” she explained of the local group. “His son, Ashley, and another college student, Jacob Welsh, run the groups.”

Although the Young Philosophers regularly meets in Batavia, it currently is seeking a new home in the area.

Often, the group takes fields trips, such as to the Illinois Aviation Academy in West Chicago and to the Fabyan Windmill in Geneva.

On Nov. 14, it was the Chronicle’s turn to host the students, as well as some of their parents.

After reporter Ashley Sloboda and I spoke with the group about the Chronicle and our respective roles at the paper, the tour ensued.

Once that concluded, I handed the kids some short surveys, asking for feedback about the trip, as well as how young people today consume news.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Samuel Choate indicated he consumes news via TV and radio. He said his favorite part of the trip was how he “learned that reporters are always on the job, adding he “loved the tour of the place.”

At least three students wrote on the surveys that one of the new things they learned about was the First Amendment. That amendment is beautifully written on the

wall of our newsroom, and I usually make it a point to read it – and briefly explain it – to younger tour-goers.

“My favorite part was about the First Amendment,” wrote 9-year-old Alexandra Warta-Collins of the Chronicle trip. “It was interesting about how it happened.”

Ogan said the group was thrilled to have participated in the outing.

“We loved it,” she said. “I thought it went really well.”

Habitat loss has hit them hard. And, as more and more roads traverse turtles’ home ranges, more and more are getting hit by cars.

Over the decades I’ve had Arthur, the ornate box turtle’s status in Illinois has slipped to the point where it has been listed as a threatened species.

I never thought I’d need to file paperwork in order to keep a pet, but because of the decline, I now have a Permit for Possession of Endangered or Threatened Species on file with the Illinois Department

of Natural Resources.

What bothers me most is that box turtles have suffered huge losses thanks to the very means that brought Artie to me – the pet trade. Only recently have states started to clamp down on the capture of wild turtles. And, even then, many of the clamps aren’t very tight. Lots of wild-caught animals are still making their way into pet stores and reptile swap meets.

With the December holidays just around the corner, you or someone you know may be considering giving or

one the size of your palm, it’s probably still a youngster. Female red-eared sliders, which typically grow larger than males, can measure a foot or more as adults. That 20-gallon aquarium that seems adequate for young Shelly soon will be way too small.

Finally, inquire as to where the turtle you’re interested in originated. Don’t accept “wild caught” as an answer; “captive bred” or “rehomed” is what you want to hear. If no captive breeding programs exist for the species you’re interested in, check websites, such as www.PetFinder.com or clubs, such as The Chicago Herpetological Society, which has an active adoption program for turtles (and lots of other reptiles) in need of new homes. Or, if you want, give us a call. We might be able to hook you up with the species you’re seeking.

Remember though – a life span of 50 years or more. It’s a long time. Just ask Artie.

While that may seem like a fine idea, just be sure you or the intended recipient knows what lies ahead.

For one thing, turtles live a long time. A really long time.

Artie was no kid when I got him and, all these years later, he’s still going strong. With box turtles, life spans of 50 years or more are the norm, not the exception. For other species, such as red-eared sliders, average life expectancy is maybe 35 years – less than a box turtle, yes, but still considerably longer than the three or four years you can expect from a hamster or gerbil.

When you get a turtle as a pet, be prepared to be committed to it for decades to come.

This longevity is contingent on proper care – a balanced, species-appropriate diet, clean water, a temperature gradient that allows both basking and cooling, as well as a light source that supplies both UV-A and UV-B rays. For aquatic species, don’t forget to factor in a large aquarium or indoor pond along with a heavy-duty filtration system.

None of this comes cheap.

Also keep in mind a turtle’s adult size. If you’re looking to acquire, for example, a red-eared slider, and pick out

I guess we all have our Thanksgiving favorites. My brother likes turkey, and lots of it. I’m partial to stuffing.

And my buddy Arthur, he’s a sweet-potato fiend.

Yesterday, I watched in amazement as he wolfed down a pile as big as his head. They were made just the way he likes them – baked, no butter, with just a bit of skin left on – and it wasn’t long before every trace had vanished.

Well, every trace except the bits that clung to his face and neck. Indeed, the way he tore into his meal, you’d think he hadn’t eaten in days.

Then I realized, gosh, it really had been days since he’d eaten. Three, to be exact.

But that’s OK. Because Arthur isn’t your typical Thanksgiving dinner guest. He’s an ornate box turtle, Terrapene ornata, and I’ve been serving him sweet potatoes, and worms, and other turtle-grade delectables, since 1978.

Artie and I met on Columbus Day of that year in the Noah’s Ark pet store that was then at Aurora’s Fox Valley Mall. I’d wanted a pet turtle for a long time and, that day, my folks finally gave the OK. That I had a learner’s permit and could drive myself to the mall (with my white-knuckled mom riding shotgun) made the day all the more special.

He was in an enclosure with lots of other box turtles, and when his eyes (fire-engine red, a trait of male box turtles) met mine, I knew he was the chelonian for me. When I picked him up he hissed, in effect sealing the deal. Thirty-six years later, we’re still together, a girl and her turtle.

But Artie’s story also has an element of irony. Because, had I known then what I know now, I never would have gotten him.

The crowd huddled together on the First Street Plaza during the Lighting of the Lights ceremony. The event marks the beginning of the two-day Holiday Homecoming event organized by the Downtown St. Charles Partnership.

After the ceremony’s 10-second countdown, every holiday light in the city turns on simultaneously, said Craig Larsen, the Holiday Homecoming committee chair. He said there appeared to be about 1,000 people at the event this year, on par with the 1,000 who attended the ceremony in 2013, according to St. Charles police estimates.

Flipping the ceremony light switch this year was Anna Pankoke, granddaughter of former St. Charles Mayor Sue Klinkhamer, with help from Diane Rogina, wife of St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina.

“St. Charles, decked out in its holiday finest, is the jewel of the Fox River Valley,” Ray Rogina said during the ceremony.

Before the lights went on, the St. Charles East and North high school chorales sang “Joy to the World,” “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Deck the Halls.”

St. Charles East chorale member Connor Anderson said he kept warm during the ceremony thanks to his scarf and black pea coat. This was his second consecutive year performing at the Lighting of the Lights.

“Everyone is happy to be down here, and it’s a great occasion,” said Anderson, 17.

“The town is beautiful once they turn on the lights.”

Ehlen said this year’s ceremony was better than last year’s because there appeared to be more lights in the First Street Plaza this time around.

Ehlen and her husband, Ray, took their son, Declan, 2, to see Santa Claus on the plaza. Santa first emerged from the balcony of the Steel Beam Theater during the ceremony.

BATAVIA – Kevin Casto, a member of Batavia Boy Scout Troop 12, is hoping people are getting in the mood to pick out a Christmas tree.

For 58 years, the troop has operated a Christmas tree lot as a way to generate funds.

The lot is at 411 S. River St. (Route 25), adjacent to the Batavia Skate Park.

Casto, 16, who is a senior patrol leader with the troop and a junior at Marmion Academy in Aurora, has worked at the lot for six years.

“You learn salesmanship skills,” he said. “And you get to see people you know. It’s nice to see familiar faces.”

The fresh, pre-cut Christmas trees, wreaths and

roping are from Badger Evergreen Farms in Merrill, Wisconsin.

The tree lot is the biggest fundraiser for the troop, said Dan Kendell, committee chair of Troop 12.

Proceeds go toward funding activities, such as summer camp and other outdoor activities.

But more than that, Kendall said operating the tree lot helps the Boy Scouts develop skills.

The tree lot will stay open through Dec. 21, or until the trees are sold out. Hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Cash and checks are accepted.

CHARLES – The St. Charles Arts Council is seeking student artists of all ages and disciplines for the second annual Charlie’s Center for the Arts – Student Artist Event in March.

The event, which will run from March 6 through March 8, will encompass multiple venues throughout St. Charles and feature the visual and performing art of student artists from kindergarten through college, according to a news release.

Students are invited to participate in the event audition or submit visual artwork for jurying.

Auditions for performing artists will be from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 7 at Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St., St. Charles. The auditions are for a March 7 concert, a March 8 performing artist showcase and forthcoming master classes in association with the event, the release states.

Mary E. Schlipf, age 87, of Carol Stream, formerly St. Charles, died Thursday, November 27, 2014, at Central DuPage Hospital, Winfield from complications from Crohn’s Disease.

Mary had been employed by Cook County Hospital, Oak Forest Hospital, and Delnor Hospital. She also was employed by St. Charles Manufacturing and later her and her husband operated Schlipf Custom Furniture in St. Charles.

She was a member of the Eastern Star. One of her enjoyments was her animals on the farm; horses, dogs, and especially the loved cows. She loved to travel here and abroad.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Schlipf. Two grandchildren, William and Sarah (Doug) Galbreth; and great grand daughter, Hayden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert N. Her son, Robert S. Her sisters, Constance Stamler and Loredo Crow. Her three brothers, Ralph, Paul, and Charles Rensink.

A former St. Charles Township man, who had been a part-owner of the Royal Fox Country Club, has been sentenced to federal prison for failing to pay nearly $1.3 million in federal income taxes and concealing business interests in his personal bankruptcy case, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago.

Dennis Weiss, 64, of South Elgin, pleaded guilty to one count each of filing a false federal income tax return and making false statements in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition. U.S. District Judge John Lee on Tuesday sentenced Weiss to 30 months in federal prison and ordered him to pay $296,643 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

Weiss will begin his prison term in January, according to the statement. Weiss owned Custom Homes by D.R. Weiss Inc. and Reliable Home Solutions Inc., both formerly based in St. Charles, according to the statement. According to court documents, Weiss filed false individual federal income tax returns for 2005 through 2009, and failed to file corporate tax returns for both of his companies.

Between 2005 and 2009, Weiss paid personal expenses from Custom’s business bank account, accepted cash

payments from Custom and Reliable customers, and failed to record the receipt of these funds on the corporations’ books, resulting in a federal tax loss of nearly $1.3 million, officials said.

When Weiss filed a personal bankruptcy petition in 2009, officials said he intentionally concealed the existence of Melrose Currency Exchange Inc., which he had owned for several years.

Court documents also show that Weiss falsely declared that he had no interest in any partnerships or joint ventures when, in fact, he held interests in three family held entities: Royal Fox Country Club LP, Royal Fox Country Club LP II and Weiss Private Equity LP. Weiss’ false bankruptcy petition listed nearly $1.3 million in assets and $1.4 million in debts to about 43 trade creditors, officials said.

According to the bankruptcy filing, Weiss surrendered six properties, including his residence at 38W546 N. Lakeview Circle, St. Charles Township and five vacant lots – one in St. Charles, one near Lily Lake and three in Oswego.

Among the creditors listed were Platinum Plumbing of Elburn, to which he owed $3,700, and the former Valley Community Bank in St. Charles, to which he owed $4,100, bankruptcy documents show.

Santa comes to Geneva Commons

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As evening descended on shoppers scouring the Geneva Commons shopping center for Black Friday deals, a man in a sequined red suit and luxurious white beard came clip-clopping by in a horse-drawn carriage.

“Merry Christmas!” his voice boomed out as he waved.

“Ho! Ho! Ho!” Shoppers of all ages stopped and waved.

“You’re on the ‘good’ list.

And you’re on the ‘very good’ list,” Santa Claus said, as pointed at various children on the way to the annual Light up the Night tree lighting ceremony.

A crowd gathered at a large tree in the outdoor mall as Santa’s carriage pulled up, waiting for him to light the tree.

As each child stepped up for a photo with Santa, he bellowed out, “Cheeseburger!”

“We didn’t go home last night; we were out at dinner and then went to a hotel,” Phillip Nowicki said. “So we stopped here in Geneva to check out this great shopping center.”

Santa returns to Geneva Commons, at 602 Commons Drive, Geneva, each Sunday through Dec. 21. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., he will stroll through the center handing out treats to kids.

Then, from 2 to 5 p.m., children can visit him in the Santa Station near Learning Express Toys.

Store donates 65 pounds of fudge to troops

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, 1308 Commons Drive, Geneva, donated 65 pounds of chocolate fudge to the Blue Star Mothers of Greater Chicago for distribution to troops.

Franchise owner Lisa Cruse said the poundage is from a July promotion “Fudge for Troops,” in which for every pound of fudge bought, a pound is donated to troops.

Fudge costs $13.95 a pound, she said.

Last year, the store donated 50 pounds, she said.

“That is up 15 pounds from last year,” Cruse said. “We hope to continue to grow our program each year.”

The store makes all of its fudge on site on a marble slab, she said.

Small Business Saturday supports local businesses We often pass up our local merchants in lieu of national chain stores. Maybe it’s the lure of lower prices.

But how much are you really saving? And who benefits?

Likely, your money is going overseas, or into the pockets of billionaire conglomerate owners. Sure, the sales tax you pay stays local, but the rest of your money, and your patronage, go to support a business with little interest in Kane County.

This Saturday, let’s change all that. It is Small Business Saturday, which comes one day after Black Friday, when deal-hungry shoppers flood chain stores for deals that might only save them a couple bucks. Saturday, let’s spend our money in local stores that believe in our local economy.

Some might argue that locally owned shops are more expensive. Maybe they are, but likely not by much. The advantage of local shops is that you are buying from your neighbors, who – in turn – reinvest your money into your community.

And they probably have unique items you won’t find in big-box stores. Some local shops can even personalize gifts or create special orders, something the recipient will appreciate and cherish.

In the downtown areas of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia – and throughout Kane County – there are many one-of-a-kind boutique shops, enough to make for an entire day of shopping.

You can find clothes, toys, housewares and furniture from smaller vendors with a more carefully selected inventory. Our local shop owners work hard to provide excellent customer service and a personalized shopping experience.

And don’t forget about the local restaurants, manned by local residents with a passion for cooking.

So don’t spend your entire holiday gift budget Friday.

Make a shopping day out of Saturday.

Invite your friends and family and explore the local stores. Treat yourself to a nice lunch at a local café or diner.

Auto safety is often delayed THE WASHINGTON POST The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is widening its crackdown on air bags at risk of exploding – potentially killing or maiming the people they are supposed to protect. This is another case in which it has taken years for the government and car companies to come to grips with the full scale of a deadly automotive defect, demonstrating again that the nation’s vehicle safety monitors aren’t doing a good enough job.

Takata is one of a few firms worldwide that manufacture air bags. The devices are supposed to deploy with enough force to provide protection in milliseconds, preventing dangerous impacts with other parts of a car. The bags at issue appear prone to deploy too violently, creating metal shards and propelling them toward people in the car. The problem has been linked to four U.S. deaths and many injuries – including those of Stephanie Erdman, who testified before

a Senate panel earlier this month that she was blinded in one eye after her Honda air bag deployed.

Takata air-bag recalls have been going on since 2008, but evidence of the problem began emerging long before that. The company admitted this month that Honda sent it photos of a burst air bag in 2005 that it failed to investigate. Since then, the scale of the problem has grown alarmingly. Air bags in humid places seem to be more at risk, suggesting some interaction between chemicals used to deploy air bags and moisture. Recalls first focused on 8 million cars in humid climates. Last week, the NHTSA began to push for a nationwide recall affecting perhaps 30 million cars.

That’s the right call, and it should have happened sooner.

Cars can be driven in and out of humid regions. All owners deserve notice that they might have a defective air bag that should be replaced.

The bigger question is whether carmakers and the

NHTSA effectively are monitoring and responding to aftermarket problems. This year, it emerged that General Motors failed for years to fix faulty ignition switches in some cars.

Now, it seems that millions of Americans have been driving for years with dangerous air bags. Part of the problem appears to be what car companies have – or haven’t – been telling the NHTSA, and part of it is that the NHTSA doesn’t always pick up on significant problems in their early stages.

Democrats and Republicans in Congress are looking for ways to improve the system.

Meanwhile, there is at least one thing that already makes sense for them to pass: a bill that would reduce the routine secrecy surrounding court settlements in lawsuits concerning public safety or public health.

There were air-bag-related proceedings as early as 2003. With more information on the public record, those in and outside of government would have a better chance of connecting the dots sooner.

James from the Kitchen, at 309 W. State St., in Geneva, recently opened. It features gourmet baked dog treats – made by Roth – as well as regular dog food, leashes, toys and dog clothes. Roth and his partner, Kristen Lohr, own the business, which is in the front part of the space also occupied by dog groomer Le Doggie Divine Pet Spa.

Previously, Roth said he worked as a chef at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, at a retirement community and as a pastry chef.

“James from the Kitchen is a pet bakery boutique,” said Roth, a Geneva resident. “It’s a place where you can buy handmade gourmet pet treats that I make. ... I use ingredients that you would find in your kitchen. I do not use anything that you would not personally eat yourself. No preservatives no additives.”

A “barker’s dozen” of 13 small biscuits costs $4. The same amount of large biscuits would cost $7.50, Roth said.

Roth said he bakes everything at home, but he said he eventually will be baking onsite. He said he also will offer decorated Christmas dog cookies, as well.

As to starting his own business for the first time at age 54, Roth said it was an idea he’d considered for years.

“I was given an opportunity, and I just couldn’t turn it down,” Roth said. “I had played around with this for many, many, years and just never had an avenue to do it.”

Batavia looking into hiring a human resources director

Aldermen are set to discuss the idea at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting. City Administrator Bill McGrath has proposed the city hire a human resources director, who would be responsible for overseeing such tasks as employment

services, employee benefit administration, labor relations, employee safety, training and workers’ compensation.

In a memo to aldermen and Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke,

McGrath suggested the city hire a human resources director and eliminate the position of assistant city administrator, which is vacant after Jason Bajor resigned earlier this year

for personal reasons.

“An HR person needs time to develop relationships with the employees and especially the bargaining units,” McGrath wrote in the memo. “We have had terrific relationships for the most part, and I feel that the investment in the position is important.”

He noted the vast majority of surrounding municipalities have a human resources person.

“How they handle their administrative duties varies, some by having additional administrative assistants, some by having ‘assistant to’ positions and some by having several interns or management analysts,” McGrath said.

McGrath also suggested the city hold off on hiring a communications/events/administrative aide person until a staffing study is done, which he said could take a few months.

“We need to play that way for 32 minutes to be as successful as we want to be,” Poulin said. “We need that sort of will to win.”

North will face host St. Charles East for third place at 6 p.m. tonight as both St. Charles squads finished 2-1 in pool play. The host Saints lost the nightcap, 59-53, to highly touted St. Joseph.

Downers Grove South moved ahead, 46-45, with 25 seconds to play in the game on a driving layup from Mantas Augustinavicius.

North senior forward Jack Callaghan (19 points, eight rebounds) then drew a foul with 11.6 seconds to play. After making the first free throw to tie it, he missed the second, but North senior forward John Davern and junior guard Jarod Karom helped keep the rebound alive long enough for Ludwig to pounce on it, convert a layup and draw a foul with 5.2 seconds to go.

Ludwig made the ensuing free throw for the final margin before a last-second 3-point try by the Mustangs’ TJ Clifford failed to draw iron.

Callaghan would have liked to give North the lead himself but a group effort turned his missed second free throw into a blessing in disguise.

“We were up for this game since July,” Gentry said. “We were pumped for this one. It was a great environment. The student section was great, the fans were great, so it was a lot of fun. Obviously, we didn’t get the ultimate goal of the win but the confidence that will come from this game will be monumental.

We know we can play because

they’re a top-five team in state and we were right there, so that’s good for us.”

East drew within a point twice in the second half – on a Jake Asquini 3-pointer late in the third quarter and a Jake Clodi 3 early in the fourth – but the Saints misfired for much of crunch time, aside from a pair of Asquini 3-pointers that brought East to within two twice in the final minute.

Watson made 7-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter to help close out the win for St. Joe (3-0).

“We just didn’t shoot well from the field, and some easy ones, too, not even 3-pointers,” East coach Pat Woods said. “I think we shot 43 percent from the

field, and when you’re playing a team as good as St. Joe’s, obviously they make it a little harder to score, and that showed a little bit tonight.”

The Saints also played much of the night without starting wing James McQuillan, who hit his head on the floor during the first quarter and did not return.

Woods said it was too early to know whether McQuillan had a concussion.

While the Chargers’ backcourt is a handful, center Nick Rakocevic might have supplied St. Joe’s chief advantage. The 6-foot-10 junior had 17 points, 11 rebounds and blocked three shots. He also recovered from a hard foul by Asquini to make two free throws for a 46-40 lead at

the 6:15 mark of the fourth quarter.

“I thought I had a wide-open dunk, to be honest with you,” Rakocevic said. “I didn’t see the kid come out of nowhere. I hurt my lower back. It was really painful at first … at first I thought, ‘Man, I broke my back, I’m done, I can’t play.’ But I took a few deep breaths and with the encouragement of my teammates, they pulled me back up, they encouraged me to make my two free throws. Those were big free throws for us so I had to pull through for them.”

Asquini scored 11 points for East and senior center Jack Bronec had nine, eight coming in the first half. The Saints trailed at halftime, 29-22.

East and North will now meet on the final day of the tournament for the third time in the past four years despite both teams always being slotted on opposite sides of the tournament draw.

“After such an emotional game like this, it takes a lot out of you, but you’ve got to be ready – it’s North, right?” Gentry said.

“So we’re going to be ready because you’ve got to be. It’s our crosstown rival and it’s a lot of pride. It’s for third place, so in the grand scheme of things, it’s not conference, it’s not for the [tournament] championship but it’s all about pride. They’re going to come ready to play, we’re going to come ready to play and it’s going to be a battle.”

CRYSTAL LAKE – Everything had gone as planned for the Geneva boys basketball team through its first two games of the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving Tournament, winning both its games by substantial margins.

They continued their dominance play Friday, as the Vikings took care of Prairie Ridge, 46-36, to move to today’s championship game.

Nate Navigato led the way for Geneva (3-0) with 14 points and sat out most of the second half, as did many of the Vikings’ starters.

Prairie Ridge was able to make the final outcome close, but much of the fourth quarter was played by the second and third teams as Geneva played 18 different players.

“It gave us a chance to see what we have and who can give us contributions this year,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “We got to rest some guys for tomorrow night, which was good.”

Navigato was one of three players Geneva started that are at least 6-foot-7. Both Ralston and Navigato know that can be a major advantage for them down the road.

Free throws send the Bulldogs to win over Spartans in a thriller

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Generously listed at 5-foot-9-inches tall, Kamontez Thomas was the smallest player on the floor Friday night as the Batavia boys’ basketball team battled St. Francis.

Thomas’ teammate, 6-foot 7-inch center Chasen Peez, was the tallest man on the court.

But that height didn’t matter as both Bulldogs knocked down huge shots in the final minute of a wild, 56-55 win for Batavia on its home floor that ended with St. Francis guard Jason Sullivan launching a half-court shot at the buzzer that hit the backboard and fell harmlessly.

“I thought it was going to be a game like that; it was going to come down to the last second,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said.

“I actually thought the halfcourt shot was in. I’ve been on the wrong end of those, too.”

The teams traded leads three times in the final minute of play.

Down 52-50, Thomas stepped up and nailed a 3-pointer – his only make from the floor on the evening – with about 50 seconds remaining to put the Bulldogs up, 53-52.

“After Danny [Pieczynski] dished it to me, I saw an opening on the side so I just decided to take it because I wasn’t hitting anything,” Thomas said.

“My teammates just trusted me to hit the shot.”

A steal on the next possession put Thomas back at the free-throw line, where he salvaged the second free-throw attempt to increase the lead to 54-52 for Batavia.

But with less than 20 seconds remaining, Sullivan buried a 3-pointer of his own to put the Spartans back on top, 55-54.

The Bulldogs drew a foul seconds later, putting Peez

back at the line, where he had already made three free throws.

St. Francis called a timeout to discuss strategy, and possibly ice Peez.

It didn’t work.

Peez made both as the crowd and his teammates went into a frenzy after Sullivan’s long jumper missed.

“I was a little bit nervous, not going to lie,” Peez said. “I just mentally prepared myself in that timeout. I think I just cooled myself down because I was way too nervous going out so I’m kind of glad they called the timeout trying to ice me. I had a moment to cool down and prepare myself and sunk the free throws. I went back down on the defensive end, and I think we did everything perfectly right to push them outside the arc to make them chuck up a half-court shot.”

“We can grind with any team,” Peez said. “St. Francis is a very talented team. They like to grind out games; we know that and came prepared for it. This (win) just lets us know that we can do this.”

In Friday night’s opener, Wheaton Warrenville South opened the game on a 16-0 run, dominating Kaneland en route to a 68-45 victory.

The Tigers increased lead to 25 late in the fourth quarter, with nine different scorers registering points.

Josh Ruggles scored 20 of his team-leading 28 points for the Tigers in the first half, with Wheaton Warrenville South leading 38-22 heading to the third quarter.

Kaneland’s 6-foot-5 center Jacob Gomes led the Knights with six points in the first half and finished tied for the team lead with eight points and three rebounds on the evening as the Tigers’ interior defense limited the big man’s opportunities.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ELMHURST – After jumping out a 15-point halftime lead, the Kaneland girls basketball team had to hold on to beat IC Catholic Prep, 4031, in the title game of the IC Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday night.

Kaneland started the second half leading, 27-12, but a determined IC squad and cold shooting by the Knights whittled the lead to 34-26 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter turned into a real defensive battle as the teams combined for only 11 points and one field goal.

“We’ve got a lot of young kids, so it’s nicer that they hung on,” said Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe. “We just didn’t hit many shots.

[IC] played pretty well defensively, and they had us settling for jump shots in the second half. We weren’t hitting, so the game tightened up.”

In the first half, Kaneland’s strong defensive play limited IC to six field goals and no free throws.

The Knights’ first foul of the game came three and a half minutes into the second half.

“We were happy tonight that we weren’t fouling, “ Colombe said. “We had a little trouble with that all week.”

Kaneland (4-0) was also successful in getting the ball inside to center Bailey Crimmins.

The 6-foot-3 junior scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the first half.

IC (4-1) started out the second half on a 9-0 run, narrowing the Knights’ lead to 27-21 halfway through the third quarter.

“At halftime we had a conversation about expectations and just reassuring them that they are a great basketball team and they need to believe in themselves,” said IC coach Aubree Schuett explaining her

team’s second-half resurgence. “We told them to play their game and stick to the game plan.”

The squad also changed to a zone offense that frustrated the Knights’ attempts to get the ball inside to Crimmins.

“They switched it up and went zone and it worked for them,” said Colombe.

Kaneland did not get on the board until freshman guard Jennifer Weber drained a 3-pointer from the left wing with 2:25 left in the period.

The fourth quarter was scoreless for the first three minutes when IC’s Anjella Farmer (seven points) scored.

For the rest of the quarter neither team made a basket, scoring only from the freethrow line.

Ally VanBogaert scored 8 points for the Knights including two 3-pointers.

Claire Gibler was the leading scorer for IC with eight points.

The Saints (4-1) fell to Stevenson, 79-53, in what turned out to be the championship game of the Schaumburg Thanksgiving Tournament.

As the tournament bracketing worked out, St. Charles East and Stevenson did not play until the final day of the tour-

nament, both sporting 4-0 records.

The winner would earn the tournament crown.

The Saints got beat on the boards and down the floor as the Patriots (5-0) had multiple second-chance opportunities and easy conversion in the game. St. Charles fell behind by 20 late in the first half to Stevenson and trailed 41-24 at halftime. St. Charles didn’t get any closer than 17 points in the second half.

Gomes, a 6-foot-5 multisport athlete, spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab after a Windmill City Classic game earlier this week about bouncing back from the injury and his anticipated role for the Knights this winter. The following is an edited transcript:

How tough was that recovery process to get through?

It was pretty tough. I did a lot of rehab and stuff in the offseason, worked on my game. Just did what I had to do.

Both senior guards appreciated the individual honor, but would have rather had a team victory.

“It’s great to go 4-1 after last year going 1-4 [at the Schaumburg tournament],” Claussner said. “But we played tired.

With Thanksgiving and all, we just seemed tired. But that’s no excuse. We have to be prepared when we get here.”

“We continued to hustle,” Washington said. “But we need to try to correct things big time.”

I worked on my post game a lot in the offseason, and I think also getting rebounds is a good way to get points, too.

What do you guys hope to get out of this tournament this week in Batavia?

We’re hoping as a team to just get to know each other, how we play … we just have to work out some little kinks and hope to come out of [games] with a ‘W.’

You guys are kind of a younger team, a lot of juniors. Do you think you guys can speed up the learning process and play some good ball?

I think so. We’ve all played together quite a bit, played a lot of basketball over the years together, so I think we’ll be alright.

Bears place Briggs on IR

The Bears placed Briggs on IR because of a groin injury, ending his season. Briggs suffered the injury in the win over the Buccaneers and said on his TV show on Comcast SportsNet that he would be out a few weeks.

Briggs missed time earlier in the season with a rib inju-

ry, and was out seven games last season because of a shoulder injury.

In 2014, Briggs had 35 tackles, two for a loss, one QB hit, one interception, three passes defensed and a forced fumble.

The seven-time Pro Bowler has spent all 12 of his NFL seasons with the Bears, playing in 170 games, which is fifthmost in franchise history.

He has six career defensive touchdowns, which ranks third in Bears history. Briggs was a third-round pick in 2003 and completely outplayed his draft position. In fact, Briggs was the 12th linebacker taken

in that draft.

While his past two seasons with the Bears have been marred with injuries and some off-the-field questions at the start of this year when Briggs missed practice for the opening of his restaurant, he will go down in history as one of the best players in franchise history. Briggs led the Bears in tackles in nine different seasons, and had more than 100 tackles ever year from 2004 through ’12.

Briggs’ contract is up at the end of this season.

WEEKEND LIFE Using books to foster empathy Michael Brown case sparks discussion on race relations It’s hard to know what to say to children about the events in Ferguson, Missouri. Monday evening, a grand jury chose not to charge Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson with the killing of an unarmed teenager, Michael Brown.

In spite of whatever unfortunate choices Brown and Wilson each may have made leading up to Brown’s death, in my opinion, deadly force absolutely wasn’t justified. Justice seems not to have been served in this latest, dispiriting installment in our nation’s racism history, and there’s precious little we can do about it.

Or is there?

I think there is.

I won’t pretend that this complex problem has any simple solutions. Dissertations have been – and will continue to be – written on the subject, but parents and others can begin the process of dismantling the walls of misunderstanding brick by brick, that I believe divide us, by encouraging children to become familiar with others who are different from them – no matter their race or walk of life.

Books can help.

On Nov. 23, Black writer Ashley C. Ford, who grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, said in her BuzzFeed piece, “Meanwhile In America, Brown Girls Are Still Dreaming,” that her father wrote letters to her from jail.

“My darling,” he wrote, “books are the easiest place to find your dreams. Once you have your dreams, keep them safe and they will keep you safe.”

Inspired by his words, Ford says the library became her refuge. Finding books about girls like her, however, was another matter.

Use dynamic stretches to warm up before you exercise Dear Doctor K: I’ve been running for years and have always stretched before my morning run. Now I hear that I shouldn’t stretch first. Why not?

Dear Reader: You should stretch before your run – but perhaps not the types of stretches you’ve been doing.

Static stretches are what most people have traditionally done, both before and after exercise.

Static stretches involve adopting and holding a position that stretches a muscle or group of muscles. For example, if you stand up straight and hinge forward at the hips, then hold the position with your arms hanging down, that’s an example of a static stretch. The purpose of static stretching is to encourage muscles to relax, which then allows them to be stretched a little longer. Static stretching promotes flexibility.

However, experts now believe that static stretching before exercising does not improve athletic performance. Indeed, it can actually undercut strength and power, possibly by affecting the ability of the muscles to store and swiftly release energy.

Exercises that require explosive muscular activity – like sprinting, or dunking a basketball – seem to be compromised by

So, generally speaking, it’s best to do static stretches after exercise or at a separate time entirely.

The best stretches to get you ready for exercise are dynamic stretches. A dynamic stretch, as the name suggests, involves movement as you stretch. Dynamic stretches typically take specific muscles and joints through a full range of motion. They often mimic a sports motion. A golf swing without a club in your hands is an example of a dynamic stretch.

Dynamic stretches increase the range of motion at the joints.

They help warm up the body, pumping more blood and oxygen to the muscles. They loosen up the muscles, preparing them for more intense use.

I’ll describe three dynamic stretches. You can find photos showing the correct form for these exercises on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

• Torso rotation with a reach.

Stand up straight with your feet hip-width apart. Reach toward your left side with your right arm and then toward your right side

with your left arm, while shifting your weight with each change of direction. Tap your toes with each shift (your right toe when you reach your right arm, your left toe when you reach your left arm).

• Knee lifts. Stand up straight, bringing your feet together. Lift your right knee and then your left knee, touching both hands to the knee being lifted.

• Arm sweeps. Stand up straight with your feet together.

As you inhale, sweep your arms out to the sides and up toward the ceiling. As you exhale, sweep your arms down to your sides.

Repeat each dynamic stretch about 10 to 20 times. Repeat the sequence for about 5 to 8 minutes.

If you’d like, you can always add a sports-specific movement to your routine – a golf or tennis swing, for example.

Stretching is as valuable as ever when exercising. It’s just that recent studies of human physiology have taught us that dynamic stretching is better before exercise and static stretching is better after it.

This deal from the Dormer book would trip up many players. South is in four spades. West leads the club nine: two, six, ace. Declarer plays a trump. East wins with his ace and returns the club queen.

How should South continue?

Note the auction. On the second round, South, with a balanced hand, was not worth a jump to game. He made a help-suit gametry in his weaker minor. Then North correctly jumped to four spades with that wonderful singleton diamond and a fourth trump.

(Yes, South might have rebid two no-trump.)

When East plays the club six at trick one, declarer should realize that West has led a singleton. So, if, at trick three, South makes the natural play of covering East’s club queen with his king, West will ruff and shift to a heart. Then declarer will lose one spade, one heart, one club and the club ruff.

Now suppose that South does not cover the club queen. If East switches to hearts, South does not concede the club ruff. So East plays a third club. West ruffs and leads a heart, but declarer wins in his hand, plays a trump to dummy, ruffs a club in his hand, cashes the diamond ace, ruffs a diamond in the dummy and discards his heart seven on the high club eight – contract made.
