Elburn to have public hearing on tax levy

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A public hearing on Elburn’s tax levy will be part of the village board meeting set for Monday night.

The meeting begins at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

The hearing is necessary because the total amount that is to be levied – $824,000 – represents an 18.6 percent increase over last year’s figure of $695,001.69.

But officials said they do not expect to receive the full amount requested.

The village posted a notice on its website – www.elburn.il.us – stating that anyone “desiring to appear at the public hearing and present testimony to the taxing district” should contact the village’s finance director,

Doug Elder, at village hall or by calling 630-365-5060.

Also at Monday’s meeting, trustees are expected to address possible changes to the village’s employee manual, including the addition of a social media policy.

The Thanksgiving experience Exchange student from Italy enjoys first taste of holiday feast

Canali is from Parma, in the northern part of Italy.

She is fluent in English. She said becoming an exchange student was something she’d often thought of, and she’s wanted to come to America.

She said the process of being matched with her host family took a while, and she’s been pleased with the result.

Giancotti said she was thrilled to be able to have an exchange student, and she definitely wanted one from Italy. As an Italian-American woman, she said she wanted to learn more about her culture. It’s not as if she and Buck haven’t been to Italy – in fact they were married there – but she said there is much she’s learned from Canali, “things you probably wouldn’t encounter on a two-week vacation.”

For instance, Canali said she was surprised that those as young as 16 can drive. She said she will have to wait until she is 18 in Italy. And Canali also said she really likes the American government system. In Italy, she said high school students don’t switch classes every period the way they do here.

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Two desserts, a pumpkin pie and a massive apple pie, waited behind Costanza Canali on Thursday afternoon, as the Italian exchange student sat comfortably at her host family’s table and looked forward to her first Thanksgiving feast.

Canali, 17, is attending Geneva High School and is spending her first year in America, and her hosts, Mill Creek residents Joe Buck and Maria Giancotti, and their 7-year-old son, Jayden, want to make sure their guest receives an authentic American experience. The first taste of Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings certainly would be on that list.

“We have turkey, but not cooked with the stuffing inside,” Canali said. “It’s my first time.”

Giancotti said that Canali had to endure a little kidding from Buck, who told their guest that she first would have to take the feathers off the turkey.

Buck laughed and said Canali just smiled and said, “OK,” before being told he was kidding. Giancotti and Buck said the situation has been rewarding, with Canali happily willing to soak up everything she can. And Canali said it has been the best time of her life.

Giancotti and Buck said the kickoff to the holiday season always is special, but there is added meaning this year because they’ll get to introduce traditional customs to Canali, who said there is not as much fanfare over it all in Italy as there was so far in the United States. For instance, a shopping trip likely will take place.

“Everyone told me about the Black Friday,” Canali said.

“And then this morning, with the parade [on television]. We don’t really have parades like that in Italy. I can feel more of the Christmas experience.”

And, she thought it was odd that some of her classmates at Geneva High School were attending classes wearing shorts on a cold November day.

“It’s November, and it’s freezing for me,” she said.

“I thought that was very strange.”

Giancotti and Buck laughed and told her that many here also think that practice doesn’t make sense.

Canali said she has joined the school’s International Club, but she hasn’t done very much as far as sports.

She said it was exciting to go to a Geneva football game, as “there’s nothing like that in Italy.” And while soccer definitely is huge in Italy, she said there are club teams, but not school teams. And she said it’s not as if she would have the same kind of chance to play there.

“Soccer is a boy’s sport,” she said. “Here, it seems like your team is almost like your family. It’s a really big deal. …

In Italy, when you start high

school, a lot of kids stop playing sports.”

And though she’s been here only since August, Canali said it’s been wonderful so far.

“It’s been the best experience of my life,” she said. “It really changes the way I see things.”

An authentic holiday Canali helped the family prepare the pies, and she took part in the preparation of the turkey. As the food was cooking, she talked with Jayden and looked over at the television, where the NFL game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers was shown.

“Thanksgiving and football,” said Buck, who, as a Detroit native, was rooting on the Lions.

“She helped with the turkey,” he said. “We are showing her what Thanksgiving is all about. We’ll show her all about falling asleep on the couch.”

Because Thanksgiving is an American holiday, it’s not something she celebrates in Italy, although it’s not as if she hadn’t been a part of celebrations that featured a large amount of food. The holiday shopping, for instance, is something they normally might avoid, Giancotti said.

But there almost is a duty to have Canali go through it.

“She needs to see the craziness of it,” Giancotti said.

And they said she’ll see the Christmas lights, pose for pictures with Santa Claus and everything that goes along with the season. Canali said it was all rewarding, and as she looked back on the process and reflected on what she said was a good situation, she said she looked forward to all that she’ll do and came to a conclusion about her host family.

“I was really lucky,” she said.

The city had a signage assistance grant program in place in a program that ran through January 2011, but it was discontinued because of how the money was being spent and the longevity of tenants receiving funding, according to Scott Buening, the Batavia community development director.

ELGIN – A 55-year-old man was charged with the murder of an 88-year-old man who lived in same apartment building, Elgin police said in a news release.

Police said Matthew L. Stoecklein went into the apartment of John Poyer, strangled him and committed a theft.

Poyer’s family found him dead Nov. 22 when they went to check on him after they had not heard from him in several days, the news release said.

Stoecklein was charged this week following an investigation.

Stoecklein lived in the second floor apartment above Poyer at the intersection of Hiawatha

Drive and Jefferson Street, police said.

Stoecklein has been charged with first-degree murder, home invasion and robbery.

Company reaches out to military students, veterans

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – North Aurora resident Jim Hendrickson wants to help military and veteran students get the education they need.

He recently opened SynergEducation and OneKlickAway at 131 Flinn St. in downtown Batavia. SynergEducation offers consultations and certification for colleges and universities wanting to effectively support their military and veteran student population, and OneKlickAway is a service for prospective military and veteran students and their families.

Hendrickson himself has served in the armed forces for nearly three decades, and he is a lieutenant colonel and chief operating officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He said those who have been in the military sometimes face a frustrating situation after they move on after serving.

“When they get out, they have these great job skills and dedication and hard work, all those things you’re looking for in an employee, but they can’t get through the door because they don’t have that college credential or that additional credential that they need to meet the minimum interview requirements,” Hen-

ST. CHARLES – Several traffic detours will be in place Saturday in St. Charles as the Electric Christmas Parade makes its way down Main Street starting at 5:30 p.m.

In a news release, the St. Charles Police Department encouraged motorists to use alternative routes Saturday evening, as “traffic delays could be lengthy.”

The parade goes along Main Street, beginning at Sixth Street and ending at Fourth Avenue.

Beginning at 5:15 p.m., traffic will be detoured from Main Street and Second Street.

A parking ban will be in effect on the detour route and

on Main Street from 3 p.m. until about 7 p.m.

The real problem with Common Core

By DANA GOLDSTEIN Slate NEW YORK – In the past two weeks, there has been an explosion of commentary about the tiny – yet extremely loud – standardized test opt-out movement, in which parents prevent their kids from taking a new generation of tougher exams.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan characterized the opt-outers as “white suburban moms” afraid to learn the truth – that more than half of their little Einsteins are, according to new internationally benchmarked standards called the Common Core, intellectually mediocre. (He has since apologized for his loaded phrasing.) Frank Bruni asked, “Are American kids too coddled” by parents who protect them from measurement and competition? The conservative columnist Ramesh Ponnuru, while not exactly supporting the new standards, beat back the growing Common Core critiques from the right, like Glenn Beck’s ridiculous claim that the government will scan children’s irises.

Hothouse parents are an easy and familiar media target. And though it’s hard to generalize about the demographics of the families involved in opting out, much of the anti-test activism has been concentrated in suburbs and at more privileged urban schools, such as Garfield High in Seattle. These educated parents and kids have some legitimate concerns about the new generation

of tests. In subjects such as art, music, gym and even kindergarten, many of these exams are experimental, and can be developmentally questionable. But, in general, a more rigorous curriculum is a good thing for American students.

There is a wealth of evidence that our children do too little writing, have no conceptual understanding of math and read too many books with scant literary merit. One way to make sure local schools are correcting these problems is to require them to administer standardized tests.

We should all give a little more thought to how the new testing push is affecting people like 20-year-old Jessica, who is working three jobs while studying for the GED, because she failed to meet the mark of New York’s new, tougher graduation standards, which require scores of at least 65 on tests in history, English, math and science. Previously, New York kids could earn a so-called “local” diploma if they scored at least 55 on those exams, and had passed their high school courses. Now that option is gone, thanks to the national school reform push that promotes a single “college and career-ready” standard for all teens, regardless of whether they want to attend nursing school or Harvard.

MOFFATT BOUNCES BACK Senior going out on top while battling Crohn’s disease

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ATAVIA – Michael Moffatt’s Batavia teammates were there for him during a difficult period of his life last year.

If putting up an all-state caliber senior season is a way he can show his gratitude, Moffatt is happy to oblige.

“Just to come out and play the way I did [this year], it was really pleasing for me, and saying a thank you for the team, almost,” Moffatt said.

The resurgence of Moffatt, a senior cornerback/ receiver, has been one of the most uplifting storylines this season for Batavia, which will face Richards on Saturday in the IHSA Class 6A state championship game at Huskie Stadium.

Along with senior running back Anthony Scaccia, Moffatt is one of two Bulldogs all-state honorees this season, quite the turnaround after an adversity-filled junior year.

One of the team’s top athletes, Moffatt made a strong impression at the varsity level as a sophomore, signaling a big career could be ahead. But in the summer leading up to his junior year, Moffatt was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a startling development for the athletic teenager.

“The doctors actually asked if anyone in my family had it because usually people that do have it, it’s family-related, but I was the first one, so it was a big surprise for us,” Moffatt said.

After initially thinking the chronic, inflammatory bowel disease wouldn’t set him back too much athletically, Moffatt saw his energy steadily diminish throughout his junior football season, and his role on the team followed suit.

“Toward the beginning of the year, [in the season opener against Glenbard North], I felt fine, but then week by week, I just felt myself decreasing more and more,”

Moffatt and his family worked with doctors to adjust his treatment and make dietary changes that eventually helped his body bounce back.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron – also the Bulldogs’ track and field coach – detected Moffatt’s return to form during the spring track season.

“It was like over a twoweek span, he started to run like himself again,” Piron said. “Up until that point, he didn’t even look like himself as an athlete. … He goes ‘Coach, I think I’m turning the corner,’ and then summer hit and in 7-on-7s he looked like it, and his energy was back. And then all the sudden you’re like ‘Oh, this is so good.’ “ Moffatt’s been better than good this fall – on both sides

of the ball.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder has earned rave reviews throughout the season for his pass coverage skills as the Bulldogs typically deploy him on opponents’ go-to receiver.

Offensively, he leads Batavia in receptions (42), a few of which coming in the form of memorable, acrobatic grabs.

He has seven touchdown catches and 600 receiving yards.

“All-state football player as a senior from being a kid that we weren’t even sure was going to play as a senior,” Piron said. “That’s a wonderful story, and there’s not a better kid. What a good young man.”

Batavia senior Rourke Mullins – who plays both of the same positions as Moffatt – said he’s noticed a “nightand-day” difference in Moffatt this year.

“He’s back to Michael,” Mullins said. “That is a dy-

namic, explosive, playmaking player. It’s great to have him back.”

While Moffatt is physically in much better shape this year, competing at a high level in a sport as punishing as football while battling Crohn’s is taxing.

Senior linebacker Anthony Thielk is among the Bulldogs who are bummed Moffatt is leaning toward not playing college football as a concession to the disease.

“I’m probably going to go to school to play football so it just kills me to see him not, but he’s obviously had one of the best years ever [at Batavia], all-state,” Thielk said.

“I’m proud of him, honestly.”

Saturday projects as Moffatt’s final game, and what a way to go out.

His teammates are grateful to suit up alongside him one more time, knowing what a huge piece Moffatt has been in the Bulldogs’ run at a state title.

“This 14-week run has taken a lot out of him, but if it is his last game – it’s a lot of our last games,” Mullins said. “We’re all going to give everything we’ve got. If it is the end of the line, then it is, but I know we’re not going to have any regrets.”

The Bulldogs will take the field Saturday knowing one of their best players also might be their most resilient.

Moffatt’s senior season has been a heck of a “thank you” to the Bulldogs for their moral support.

“He’s got such God-given talent, and it was so frustrating as somebody who’s a friend of his, as somebody who’s a teammate of his, to see him struggle through what he did last year,” Batavia quarterback Micah Coffey said. “ ... It’s hard to see a teammate struggle like that and go through those hard times, but seeing him work his butt off to see him get back to where he is, it’s so cool to see all of that come to fruition and really come to life.”

Sure, Scaccia (1,725 rushing yards) ran for 184 yards with three touchdowns in Saturday’s 38-6 semifinal win at Rockford Boylan, but arguably even more impressive was carrying the ball 41 times on a freezing day without a fumble.

Hanging onto the ball will be quite the task with star Richards middle linebacker Romel Hill (113 solo tackles, 36 assists, 17 sacks, eight forced fumbles) closing in on the action in a hurry.

“He hits you like he’s a runaway train,” Richards coach Tony Sheehan said of Hill. “He’s the emotional leader, and he’s gotten

Defensive end Savon Robinson blocked two East St. Louis punts, one leading to Richards’ lone TD. Sheehan said punter Shawn Chiaramonte is booting the ball at a high level, though the same can be said for Batavia punter Tucker Knox.

Richards’ ‘D’ is highly regarded, but Batavia’s defense also has been dynamite in recent weeks, and there are cracks in Richards’ offense that seemingly can be

throughout.

“We’ve got to get that straightened, and we’ve got to get that straight pretty fast,” Sheehan said of his team’s offensive line meltdown downstate. “We have confidence in our guys.”

Batavia is a bad opponent to have protection concerns against, as the Bulldogs have 56½ sacks on the season, 12 by defensive end Josh Leonhard and 10 from defensive end Noah Frazier.

Batavia’s defense is eager to make amends for allowing a few huge plays to Richards in Richards’ 31-25 win at Batavia in Week 2.

“I think the key is tackling because we missed a lot of tackles Week 2,” Batavia defensive lineman Dino Simoncelli said. “We need to shore that up.”

Sheehan came away impressed

by Batavia’s ability to own time of possession last week at Boylan, where the Bulldogs rushed the ball 30 times in the first half alone.

Sheehan sounded motivated to devise a game plan in that mold, as a nod to the damage Batavia’s offense can do if given numerous possessions.

“We need to kind of take a page out of their playbook, move the chains and keep it moving and get the ball quickly out to our playmakers’ hands and let them do their thing,” Sheehan said.

Nonetheless, if Sheehan needs to ask his defense to carry the day, there are worse spots to be in. Richards has allowed 12 points total in its four playoff victories, and the Bulldogs’ ‘D’ has six shutouts on the season.

In addition to senior Romel Hill (6-foot, 210 pounds), his younger brother, Ramonta, and Andrew Venerable comprise an elite linebacking corps, while free safety Dylan Jiles (92-yard fumble return for TD Week 2 win over Batavia) and Robinson on the D-line are other defensive stalwarts for Richards.

“No weaknesses,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said of Richards’ 3-3 stack defense. “They fly to the football, play tough,

tackle, and they like to hit. They like to whack you. And you better block their linebackers.

You better get a body on them every play, you better hit them every play, you better be aware of what they’re doing and where they are.

“When they come to get you, they’re going to come to get you.

They’re really something.”

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Batavia 24, Richards 18 There’s something to be said for soaking in the experience, and there’s little doubt Batavia is doing that to the fullest. Piron raved about Batavia’s final night-time practice of the season Tuesday at Mooseheart.

“It was beautiful,” Piron said.

“It’s a night I don’t think any of them will ever forget. As we’re leaving, going through the end of the Christmas display, I could just tell they were just so thrilled to be practicing football in the snow, Thanksgiving week, Christmas coming.”

Christmas is likely to come early in B-Town on Saturday. Expect Batavia to play with poise, match Richards’ top-notch defense with a quality defensive showing of its own and cut down on the blunders that dogged Batavia in the regular season loss.

A celebration already is planned for 5 p.m. Sunday in downtown Batavia, so Piron’s crew might as well win this thing.

State success hard to come by for Tri-Cities public schools

As Batavia prepares to face Richards at 1 p.m. Saturday in

the 6A state final, the Bulldogs will look to make history by joining Kaneland as the only public Tri-Cities area school to win a state title.

The Knights won back-toback titles under coach Joe Thorgesen in 1997 and 1998, going a perfect 14-0 both seasons. The only other public

schools from the area to advance to a title game were Geneva (1975 and 2008) and Batavia (2006), and both came up short.

Area private schools have had a great deal more success, winning three titles in recent seasons.

St. Francis won in 5A in

2008 and Aurora Christian won 3A titles in 2011 and 2012.

Marmion made the 6A state final in 2010 but fell to Rockford Boylan.

“The exhilarating game is the semifinal game,” Eagles coach Don Beebe said. “If you win that game, it’s like the AFC and NFC title game because you’re going to the Super Bowl.

What advice would you give Batavia coach Dennis Piron?

“I did reach out to him and wish him good luck,” Beebe said. “We graduated the same year together (1983) so we know each other from competing. I told him this is a different game and not from a talent or speed or strength standpoint, but from an emotional level. The emotions can get so high and so low so fast. Dennis can’t let the emotions get to the kids and if something bad happens, he has to tell them it’s a long game and keep on encouraging them and keep their spirits up.”

It almost felt like if you didn’t win that game you couldn’t come back to town. There was that much pressure against your archrival and a trip to Champaign on the line.”

“The one thing we had in both ’97 and ’98 was great leaders. I remember we were running out in the second half to win a second state championship and I thought it would be such a drop-off for these kids not to win and of all the pressure they had. They went out and performed magnificently.

You really have to arrive ready to play the game, be yourself and do what you’ve done all season to get there and let the chips fall.”

GENEVA WRESTLING

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com n some ways, Mitch Bradberry served as the ultimate understudy for Geneva’s wrestling team last season.

He held his own sparring with established seniors Tony Castelvecchi, Mark Henriksen and Mike Villanueva in the mat room each day, but simply was unable to consistently supplant them.

In some ways, Bradberry wasn’t the ultimate understudy last season. Coach Tom Chernich ultimately cited unprecedented depth in the middle of the lineup as the reason Bradberry had to wait until his junior season to start at 182 pounds.

“Probably on any other team I coached besides last year’s team, Mitch would have wrestled varsity the whole year,” Chernich said.

Knowing as much certainly boosts Bradberry’s confidence, which has remained steady since workouts began earlier this month.

A fresh set of practice partners circles around Bradberry now, and he’s looking forward to making new connections. Still, he won’t forget he had to be the low man in the rotation before upperclassmen could look up to him.

“It improved me a lot wrestling Tony, Mark and those guys. It really did,” Bradberry said. “Wrestling with those guys, I don’t think I would be how I am today, so it helped me out a lot.”

The younger brother of former Geneva wrestler Nick, Mitch Bradberry has since supplanted his sibling’s service time on the mat. Nick Bradberry is studying at Western Illinois, which does not offer a wrestling team.

Mitch Bradberry began wrestling in fifth grade with the Batavia Pinners club, then competed for Geneva Middle School South. His high school career began at 152 pounds in 2011-12.

“I’ve just been wrestling for a long time and working

as hard as I can to get where I am,” Bradberry said.

Classmate Mike Huck, slotted in at 145, doesn’t usu-

ally face Bradberry in practice because of the weight difference, but the pair often trade notes on moves and scenarios.

“It’s a little of both,” Huck said. “Sometimes we bounce things off each other or [show moves], but he’s helpful.”

Around this time last season, Bradberry thirsted to free himself of two shackles.

First, there was the desire to create his own niche in the lineup. Then there was the traditional early-season itch to stop sparring with teammates and face other schools.

With duals and tournaments beginning this week and a starting spot in place, Bradberry now can channel his focus on varsity opponents he know he will face.

Not just Castelvecchi and Co. “Mitch will probably surpass those guys, and those guys were 25-, 30-match winners,” Chernich said. “He’ll be a rock in our lineup.”

Batavia grad chips in for St. Ambrose women’s soccer ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs While most of us stuffed our faces with stuffing and turkey Thursday, Bre Choffin was out running four miles in Batavia.

“I’m looking forward to running the Turkey Trot on Thursday,” she said. “I race my dad every year.”

This year, her younger brother Zach, a Batavia High School sophomore who runs cross country, also will be involved in the race with their father, Mike.

“It’ll be a little family competition,” Bre said.

That spirit of competition has served her well at St. Ambrose University, where the junior is a captain of the women’s soccer team. She recently was honored with first-team all-conference recognition from the Midwest Collegiate Conference as a defender.

“I had never been recognized like that before,” Choffin

said, adding that the team’s goalkeeper and another defender also were first-team selections. “It was just awesome knowing that we had one of the best defenses not only in the conference, but in the nation.”

The Fighting Bees (14-5-1) ranked second in the NAIA this year with 13 shutouts in 20 games. They won the conference title and advanced to the national tournament, where their season came to an end Saturday with a 4-2 loss to Davenport (Mich.) in tough weather.

“It was so cold,” Choffin said, noting that the game-time temperature was 22 degrees.

“It was awful. I’ve never played in snow before, and it was snowing.”

St. Ambrose fell behind 3-0 in the opening half, but made things interesting with a pair of second-half goals, the second scored by Choffin.

“We got a cross off. The ball was bouncing around the box and it finally came to me and I slotted it back left post,” Choffin said. “We turned the game around a little bit.”

The unusual sight of soccer players competing in snow was perhaps an appropriate ending for the Bees’ year.

“This season was so surreal.

People didn’t expect us to do well,” Choffin said. “We came together and ended up being a great team.”

After graduating from Batavia, Choffin chose St. Ambrose because it offered a doctoral program in physical therapy.

Based on her academic success in high school, St. Ambrose offered Choffin an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

“Physical therapy just happened to be the trifecta,” she said. “I could study physical therapy, play soccer and the

scholarships they offered were awesome.”

She said Marquette and Maryville University in St. Louis are about the only other Midwest schools that offer a similar program.

“It was very limiting,” Choffin acknowledges, but said the lack of choice in colleges was offset by the benefit of being accepted into grad school as a high school senior.

“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made,” she said. “I wouldn’t change my decision ever. I just actually got my official acceptance to grad school a few weeks ago. I couldn’t be more excited to start the doctorate program.”

Choffin made an immediate effect on the soccer field at St. Ambrose.

“I was one of two freshmen to be on varsity,” she said. “I started on the varsity team. It was pretty awesome to be in that position.”

Choffin begins the graduate portion of her studies next year, which will take up all of her time from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday, limiting her ability to contribute to the soccer team.

“I won’t be able to play as many games,” she said. “This year was probably my glory year.”

But Choffin can always satiate her thirst for competition on the basketball court, where she and some of her soccer teammates have an intramural team.

In recognition of Bullying Awareness Week, Nov. 17 through 23, students filmed an anti-bullying video, which featured an original song performed to the tune of “Cups.”

The song, “Vikings Stand Up,” featured 198 students dressed in matching T-shirts, clapping and tapping out a rhythm in unison, while singing the following verses: We’re not alone, we’re not alone It’s you and me, we’re not alone, We will stand up and say No, not this No, not today!

“For the last several years our guidance staff, teachers and students have collaborated to create several short videos that demonstrate our commitment to making positive choices in support of anti-bullying week,” said GMSN Assistant Principal Maura Burns in a news release. “This year’s video is the product of our seventh-grade teachers and students and shows how creative, compassionate and thoughtful our students are.”

In the release, video organizer and seventh-grade teacher Brenna Westerhoff said the seventh-grade students became intrigued by the idea that one person can make a difference while reading about Malala Yousafzai and how she stood up for herself and others.

During the discussions that followed, the idea for the vid-

eo was born and quickly embraced by students who wanted to spread the important lessons of standing up for each other, making a difference and having a voice, according to the release.

“Bullying comes in so many different forms that we want to help students recognize that they have a voice – a very powerful voice – and that they can make a difference,” said Westerhoff in the release.

Fox Valley resident Dr. Richard Holinger, a Marmion Academy English teacher and published author, is one of the winners of the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award in the ninth annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition.

The competition is named after the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, and is co-sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book and Kevin Stein, who selected the final Provided photo winners.

Darren Bryan is the son of Steve and Shelley Bryan of Geneva and Barbara Maness of Bettendorf, Iowa.

Simplicity helps maintain popularity of Honda’s CR-V Honda keeps it simple.

That is a major reason the company’s CR-V has been the best-selling sport utility in the United States these past few years.

There is one engine, one transmission, two drivetrain choices and two options worth noting. The 2014 CR-V continues this tradition from 2013 and earlier model years.

The 2014 2.4-liter, 185-horsepower four-cylinder engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. There is no larger engine, nor is a manual transmission offered. The powertrain suffices for front- or all-wheel- drive models.

Options worth a mention are a rear-seat entertainment system (this is a family car) and a navigation system.

There are three trim levels and they are LX, EX and EX-L. In for a test week was the EX-L with the nav and AWD. Since it was the top-of-the-line CR-V, the manufacturer’s asking price was $30,445. Prices start at $22,945 for an LX with FWD and work themselves up by $1,000 and $2,000 increments to the top price.

The engine can tow a 1,500-pound trailer and the AWD 3,426-pound CR-V in for testing purposes averages 22 and 30 miles per gallon, city and highway, respectively, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The average during test week was 28.8 mpg with 90 percent of the mileage piled up on interstates.

Driving speeds were average, there was no headwind, and one adult was aboard with 30 pounds of luggage. Regular unleaded fuel is recommended for the 15.3-gallon tank.

Standard on all CR-V models is an Eco feature, which reduces torque but increases fuel economy.

The split rear seatback quickly folds using a release lever near the tailgate opening or via a pull strap from each rear door.

Standard features include hill start assist, remote entry, halogen headlamps, front fog lights, power windows with automatic up and down for the driver, power door and tailgate locks, power exterior mirrors, cruise control, manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel, intermittent wipers, two 12 volt outlets front and center, armrests front and rear, rear window defroster and rear seat heater ducts.

Across the model line,

standard inclusions are tinted heat-rejecting green glass, a rear-view camera, trip meter, clock and compass. A mirror is built into the overhead sunglass holder for a view into the rear seating area. Parents might appreciate this feature with little ones belted into one or more of the three anchor and tether child-seat positions offered in the rear seat.

The EX-L (and EX) include as standard a one-touch open and tilt power moon roof, retractable cargo cover, front fog lights and roof rails. The EX-L has a 328-watt AM-FM, compact disc sound system with seven speakers, otherwise it is a 160 watt system with four speakers on the LX, and 160 watts with six speakers for the EX. Standard only on EX-L models are satellite radio with the sound system, dual zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped steering

wheel with redundant audio controls.

Pandora compatibility is standard on all models as are Bluetooth, USB interface, an MP3 auxiliary input jack and playback capability plus volume control sensitive to speed of vehicle.

The CR-V can carry five passengers in its two rows.

Maximum cargo capacity is 70.9 cubic feet and 37.2 cubic feet when the rear seat is upright. The liftgate is light to the touch and, when raised, reveals a wide and high opening for the loading of cargo.

And that area has floor mats, a light and four tie-downs.

Comfort and quiet dominate the CR-V cabin and, with winter weather upon us, the EX-L has heated seats. This is a vehicle designed and built for, if necessary, long family trips. Both seating rows come with full complements of arm-

rests, cupholders and storage facilities.

The CR-V has grown a bit since it was introduced to the United States market at the 1996 Chicago Auto Show. It was the pioneer vehicle that was to popularize the compact SUV market.

The original four-cylinder was a 2-liter developing 130 or 150 (a tweaked option) horsepower to pull the vehicle’s weight of 3,200 pounds. Unlike the original powerplant, the current one with 180 horsepower has no trouble accelerating with a vehicle weight of 3,545 pounds. It is no race horse, though, and acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour is in the 10 second range.

From 1996 to the present, the CR-V has retained, more or less, its original dimensions, although the boxy exterior has been replaced by a more rounded, aerodynamic design.

Tires and wheels were 15-inch, and today the wide all-terrain tires are mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels. Today’s disc brakes are capable of stopping the 2014 CR-V from a speed of 60 mph in 120 feet on dry pavement, which is better than average for an SUV. Today’s independent suspension system mimics that of yesteryear with struts in front and multilinks in the rear.

Standard safety fare includes stability and traction controls, a four-wheel antilock braking system, front and side airbags, overhead curtains, headrests complementing the five three-point seatbelts, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The side curtain airbags have a roll-over sensor. A multi-angle rear view camera is standard on all models.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain. The CR-V is assembled at a Honda facility in East Liberty, Ohio.

In ‘Frozen,’ Disney makes old-school cool

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Remember when Disney was a powerhouse of animated musicals? In the 1980s and ’90s, movies such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “Pocahontas” didn’t just win the box office, but songs from Disney movies stormed the Billboard charts, too.

There was Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King” and “A Whole New World,” a No. 1 hit from “Aladdin.” An entire generation of youngsters tormented their parents, playing the taped soundtrack from “The Little Mermaid” on a never-ending loop.

Disney is back in the game with “Frozen.” The movie might not have potential pop hits – the songs sound much more like musical theater showtunes than Miley Cyrus auto-tuned – but the animated comedy-adventure has a sweet and very modern message, plus strong characters. More important, the movie blends the music-minded mentality of yore with the more recent ambition of (thank you, Pixar) appealing to all ages.

The story was inspired by “The Snow Queen” by Hans Christian Andersen, although it bears little resemblance to

the fairy tale. “Frozen” follows sisters Elsa and Anna, who are princesses in a Nordic region, Arendelle.

Elsa has a secret power. She can fill a room with snow and ice with a few shakes of her hand. Only she hasn’t mastered her ability, and one day she accidentally injures the younger Anna with a shot of ice to the head. After that, Elsa mostly hides in her room for fear of hurting people, and the girls become estranged.

But on Elsa’s coronation day, the new queen becomes frightened – one of her triggers for spontaneous ice creation – and she accidentally freezes the fjord around the castle as she sends Arendelle into an eternal winter. Elsa flees amid accusations of witchcraft, and the majority of the movie is spent with Anna, who has always adored her sister, as she sets out to find the queen, bring her home and get her to cancel the permafrost.

Along for the ride are the burly Kristoff and his pet reindeer, Sven, plus one of Elsa’s creations, a talking snowman named Olaf.

Anna is much more of a contemporary rom-com heroine than an Ariel-the-mermaid type. She’s clumsy, awkward and a bit of a dork (although she does a mean robot). But, refreshing-

ly, she’s no damsel in distress, not even during the film’s late scenes when she finds herself in a desperate situation.

Kristen Bell, who shot to fame as the spunky detective in “Veronica Mars,” feels like the perfect pick to voice such a character. And she can sing, too, although not quite as transcendently as Broadway star Idina Menzel, who voices Elsa and has no trouble hitting the high notes in the sometimes cheesy, always soaring soundtrack.

Rising star Josh Gad also does memorable voice work as Olaf, the brainless rube of a snowman who’s always wanted to go to the beach.

The movie, while dazzling to look at, may be a little long for some small children. But its surprising and poignant ending, which subverts so many fairy tale stereotypes, feels like it cancels out the movie’s small flaws and dragging moments.

“Frozen” may be a nod to the pleasures of vintage Disney and old fairy tales, but there’s nothing outdated about it.

• “Frozen” received three stars out of four. The film is rated PG and contains some action and mild rude humor. It runs 108 minutes.

Enlarged prostate doesn’t always cause symptoms Dear Doctor K: I have BPH. Can you explain how an enlarged prostate causes troublesome urinary symptoms?

Dear Reader: Around the time of a man’s 25th birthday, his prostate gland begins to grow.

This natural enlargement is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is the most common cause of prostate enlargement. If a man lives long enough, he will almost certainly experience some degree of BPH. Most men with BPH never develop any symptoms, but for those who do, BPH can make life miserable. Interestingly, the size of the prostate does not always predict symptoms. Some men with large glands never have symptoms, while others with small glands do.

The most common symptoms of BPH involve changes or problems with urination. You may feel as though you have to urinate immediately, yet have to strain to do so. You may have a weak urinary stream or one that stops and starts. You may dribble after urinating or feel as if you’re not emptying your bladder completely. And you may feel the need to urinate frequently, causing many awakenings during the night.

The symptoms of BPH typically start slowly and fitfully and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff creep up on you over time. If you have never had the slightest suggestion of these symptoms, and suddenly for the last day or two you have had these symptoms, it’s probably not BPH. You may have a urinary infection, particularly if it burns when you urinate.

Other conditions besides a urinary infection can sometimes cause similar symptoms to BPH. That includes cancer of the bladder and of the prostate gland. It also includes stones in the bladder, and damage to the nerves leading to the bladder from various conditions (including diabetes).

Before making a diagnosis of BPH, the doctor should do a rectal examination of a patient’s prostate. In addition, the doctor usually orders a test of chemicals and cells in the urine (a urinalysis), kidney function tests (BUN and creatinine) and a PSA test (to look for signs of prostate cancer).

As the prostate enlarges, it starts to press against the urethra and the bladder. It’s like

a foot stepping on a garden hose or fingers pinching a soda straw.

(I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, AskDoctorK. com.) This gradually obstructs the flow of urine, forcing the bladder to work harder to push urine through the urethra.

But straining to urinate, although unavoidable, only makes matters worse. This extra work makes the bladder wall thicker, reducing the amount of urine the bladder can hold. And it causes the bladder to contract even when it contains only small amounts of urine, leading to more frequent urination.

Dear Abby: My fiancée and I are getting married next summer.

Last summer, my closest friend – a woman – was murdered. Her husband was charged with the crime. Both of them were to be a part of the wedding party. The husband, “Frank,” was to be my best man.

I’m at a loss about how to deal with this. I can’t believe that Frank is guilty, but the trial isn’t likely to be finished by the date of the wedding. However, he is likely to be out on bail.

Frank has been one of my closest friends for many years, and I don’t want to abandon him, but his presence would unnerve many of the guests who know about this. My fiancée and I are concerned that having him there would make our wedding “the one where the accused murderer showed up.”

He has also added a few more tips, bringing the number up to 554.

Look at the South hand. Your partner opens one diamond and East overcalls two clubs. What would be your auction plan?

Tip 303 is: Negative doubles at the one- and two-levels with fiveand six-card suits are limited.

They show a maximum of 10 high-card points. With more, bid the long suit directly. Think of a negative double followed by a new suit as trying to put brakes on the bidding sequence.

Here, South should double, planning to bid a minimum number of hearts on the next round. North will presumably rebid two spades (not three spades with a probably useless club queen and no guarantee of a 4-4 fit), and South continues with three hearts, which should end the auction.

What happens to the contract after West leads the club two?

East, who can see only three defensive winners, takes two club tricks, then has two feasible defenses. If he shifts to the ace and another spade, declarer gets home by continuing with the ace and queen of hearts; but if South tries the heart finesse, he suffers a spade ruff and finishes down one.

Alternatively, and better here, East continues with a third club. Suppose declarer ruffs on the board and takes the trump finesse. West wins with the king, puts East on play with a spade, and a fourth club promotes West’s heart 10 to the setting trick.
