Birthday upon birthday precedes holiday madness I never really realized it until this year. And maybe that’s because things have changed, and my family has gotten bigger since I was married just over a year ago.

I’m talking about the amount of gift shopping – and the time it takes to shop – leading up to Christmas, as well as the steady stream of celebrating that the season prompts.

In the case of my family, this process is unscientifically drawn out by about a month or so, as we celebrate many birthdays in November.

Nov. 11 – my youngest sister just turned 32.

Nov. 21 – my brother-inlaw just turned 40.

Nov. 23 – my middle sister just turned 33.

Nov. 29 – my mother-in-

Nov. 29 – well, that’s my birthday, too (not that I’m usually buying gifts for myself, although I do love to recognize the day).

A few more birthdays fall in November for my family, and then my dad celebrates his birthday Dec. 15.

Recently reading so much about not letting Christmas completely overshadow Thanksgiving, I started thinking about how I need to make sure these two blockbuster holidays don’t obscure some of my closest family members’ birthdays.

Many of us have been

there in some way. As a kid, it wasn’t uncommon for my two sisters and me to get one combined birthday present. And then – even better – there was the combined birthday/Christmas gift for all three of us.

What a deal!

Not that I care so much about those particular scenarios these days. On the cusp of hitting the mature old age of 34, I’m more concerned with finding the time to buy birthday presents my family members actually will like (and I can afford), as well as carving away time to celebrate their birthdays with them.

Not always easy when it seems like we’re all blasting ahead full-steam to prepare for the aforementioned holidays and the madness that

often comes with them.

One thing at a time, right?

I will say working in the Tri-Cities has its perks – it’s great to be able to run out to a downtown shop or to the Geneva Commons during a break to grab a gift, no matter what occasion it’s for.

But for now, I’m looking forward to a weekend free of gift shopping.

And eating a piece of birthday cake after consuming Thanksgiving leftovers.

GENEVA – The Geneva Park District has planned the Mitten Program, from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Dec. 11 at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

For those ages 1 to 5, with parent accompaniment, this one-time class explores the

adventures of outdoor critters. Participants can listen to some adventures and make some critters of their own to put in a mitten. Children must be accompanied by parent or guardian. The cost is $5 a child.

Where did you grow up? In the Fox Valley area.

Pets? Not since we lost our boxer Gracie three years ago.

Who would play you in the movie of your life? I would play myself.

First job? A cafeteria worker at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A veterinarian.

I became that. I went back to school at age 38 and retired after 17 years from the Animal Medical Clinic of St. Charles.

Kane County Certified Naturalists, our area’s award-winning conservation education program, is gearing up for its ninth year of classes, field trips and fun.

Part outdoor education, part social network and part self-help group for incurable nature nerds, KCCN is a year-long program designed for adults who want to learn about the natural history of our great county, and also find out about ways to put that knowledge to good use.

Participants begin by attending an information session to learn about this local learning opportunity, as well as ask any questions and fill out a written application.

In January, the program kicks off with six weeks of “core” courses in basic ecology, geology, Kane County ecosystems and ecological restoration. These classroom

During these excursions, class members visit area parks, forest preserves and museums that best illustrate the concepts discussed during class.

From there, you’ll have until May of 2017 to complete an additional 15 hours of advanced coursework (our Learn from the Experts classes or other approved providers) plus 15 hours of your choice of either more LFEs, or volunteer service at any of three participating agencies – the Kane County Forest Preserve District and/or the Geneva and St. Charles park districts. After that, it’s on to

graduation and your new life as an official KCCNer. Your one-time fee of $250 covers your costs for the entire year, as well as a certificate and

nifty polo shirt once you complete the requirements.

St. Charles celebrates annual Lighting of the Lights

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Blake Linder likely didn’t know what to expect Friday evening in downtown St. Charles.

At just 2 years old, the boy is only starting to understand the trappings of Christmas, his mother, Mary Linder, said. She said she and her husband, Joseph, brought Blake to the annual Lighting of the Lights ceremony as a way to begin family holiday traditions.

The St. Charles family was among many who gathered in the First Street Plaza for the event that kicks off the Downtown St. Charles Partnership’s Holiday Homecoming weekend, which culminates with the Electric Christmas Parade at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

DSCP Executive Director Lynne Schwartz thanked the Holiday Homecoming Committee for their months of planning, as well as others who contribute to the festivities, including the St. Charles East and North High School chorales, who sang throughout Friday’s celebration.

Sixteen-year-old North junior Caeli Wu huddled with a few fellow singers, music sheets in hand, as the crowd of spectators began to form in the plaza and along First Street.

Mayor Ray Rogina briefly addressed the crowd before beginning the countdown to switch on the lights that decorate downtown throughout the season.

“No one here in the valley does the holidays quite like St. Charles,” Rogina said.

He and Schwartz invited the attendees to return for Saturday’s activities, which include a free 10 a.m. showing of “Elf” at the Arcada Theatre – the doors open at 9 a.m. – and free horse-drawn sleigh rides from 1 to 4 p.m. at the First Street Plaza.

They also encouraged shoppers to support local merchants for Small Business Saturday.

“Our businesses appreciate your support,” Rogina said.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is encouraging motorists to use alternate routes to get through town Saturday evening, as the Electric Christmas Parade will affect traffic, according to a news release.

The parade is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street at Sixth Street near downtown and will travel east to Fourth Avenue.

Traffic on Main Street, which is also known as Route 64, and Second Street, which is also known as Route 31, will be detoured beginning at 5:15 p.m., the release stated.

Parking bans are set to begin even earlier.

Parking will be prohibited from 3 p.m. to about 7 p.m. along the detour route – which uses Illinois, Seventh and State streets – as well as along the parade route, according to the release.

The release indicates a parking ban also will affect these parade staging areas: Fourth Street between Illinois and Main streets; Fifth Street from Illinois to Main streets; and Sixth Street from Illinois to Cedar streets.

Because the parade will happen after dark, the police department is urging the public to exercise caution when driving or attending the event, according to the release. Traffic delays could be lengthy, the release stated.

CASA of Kane County in the greater Chicagoland area. Bringing her commitment to the program with her to the Carmel area when she and her beloved husband, G Robert Evans retired to Quail Meadows she introduced many to CASA who would go on to volunteer or serve as board members.

Charlotte was a passionate artist in oil painting, an accomplished pianist and very much enjoyed Bridge. Most of all Charlotte was a people person making friends where ever she was and always lighting up any room she entered.

She will be missed by many.

Charlotte is survived by her husband of over 33 years, G. Robert Evans; her 13 children and stepchildren, her 28 grandchildren, Cassie, a sweetheart of a golden retriever and Guinness a spirited black lab.

JOHN LESTER ROBBINS John Lester Robbins, age 95, of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family and beloved caregiver Sophie.

Devoted husband of Rita (Martell) and loving father of six, “Les” lived his entire life in rural Manhattan on the family farm. Les and Rita were married for over 74 years. Les was born to David and Bridgette (Mahoney) Robbins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Rosemary

Borchardt, Irene Dandurand, Leo and Gerald Robbins.

Les is survived by his wife, five sons and one daughter, Robert (Jean) Robbins, Thomas (Sandra) Robbins, Donald (Carol) Robbins, Allen Robbins, James (Pamela) Robbins and Mary (Steve) Meyer; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Les was a lifelong member of Saint Patrick’s Church, farmed his entire life in the Wilton Center area and was a member of the Will County Farm Bureau. Les retired from the family farm at age 93.

One of his favorite pastimes was playing Euchre and Pinochle.

Memorials may be made to the Saint Patrick’s Church or the Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Harry Turner, age 81, of Geneva, IL passed away peacefully on Nov. 25, at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joanne (Laverty); and his son, Joel of Geneva. His sister, Joyce Weber of Escanaba, MI; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Ronald and Theresa Hodge of Angola, IN, William and Marilyn Stewart of St. Charles, Richard and Patricia Laverty of St. Charles and many nieces and nephews.

Harry was born in Green Bay, WI and at the age of two, due to his mother’s illness, he began living with his aunt and uncle Doro-

thy and Dale Buckingham in St. Charles. He remained in St. Charles until he enlisted in the Air Force.

Harry graduated from St. Charles High School in 1952 and joined the Air Force in 1953 and served for 12 years. He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1971.

He was employed at various newspapers and taught Electronics at Waubonsee Community College.

At the time of his retirement he operated his own typesetting business. Harry was a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post 75 in Geneva. He sang bass for many years with the Fox Valley Barbershop Chorus. Harry enjoyed listening to Jazz and Big Band music. Other interests were coin collecting, gardening, woodworking and cheering for his Green Bay Packers, always in the company of his German Shepherd.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry and Eleanor; his aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Dale Buckingham; his brother-in-law, Anthony Weber; and his nephew, Tony Weber.

Visitation will be held Monday, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Yurs Funeral Home 405 E. Main Street St. Charles.

Burial will be in North Cemetery St. Charles.

He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Elgin, Il. The son of the late Richard and Marie Wacker. He and his wife formerly resided in Five Island Park, St. Charles for 25 years and was a former member of Good Shepherd Church in Elgin for 26 years.

He was a member of Hosanna Lutheran Church St. Charles. He was united in marriage to the late Edna Holmberg on March 20, 1951 in Hardy Ark. He was employed by for over 20 years at Elgin Sweeper and over seven years at Flender Corporation in Elgin.

He is survived by his daughter, Debra (John) Cronsell of Geneva.

Two sons, Daniel (Sara) Wacker of Albion, Iowa, Dale (Renee) Wacker of Elgin. Eight grandchildren, Four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna “Dee,” son, Dennis Wacker; and two brothers, Richard W. Wacker and Leon Wacker.

Charlotte M. Evans, dedicated child advocate, skilled nurse, treasured wife, loving mother and generous grandmother Charlotte was born on Nov. 26, 1933, in Sussex, New Jersey to Karl and Auguste Pfau. She had two brothers, Robert C. Pfau, who preceded her in death, and Dr. Frank R. Pfau of Advance, North Carolina.

Charlotte excelled in her studies at Sussex High School, graduating second in her class, and matriculated at the Douglas College for Women at Rutgers University, continuing on to complete her B.S. degree in Nursing at Columbia University in New York.

After finishing her Nursing requirements and participating on the first open-heart surgery team at Columbia, Charlotte took her medical knowledge to Madison Avenue in New York where she pursued the medical copy writing position she so aspired to next in her career. Selected for a medical copy role with Ortho Pharmaceutical, Charlotte instead headed west to Colorado and Wyoming, ultimately settling in California to: raise a family; advancing her copywriting work into advertising and publicity; and begin her work in child advocacy.

Together with her then-husband and partner in marketing and publicity, Charlotte opened important San Francisco Bay Area developments such as the Fremont Hub and Oak Creek Apartments as well as dedicating the Point Reyes National Seashore, leveraging her Western States Morgan Horse Association relationships. Receiving a diploma from the Stanford University Mass Media Institute, Charlotte went on to complete her Master of Public Administration at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California.

She began her work in defense of abused and neglected children with the founding of Communications for Youth, a non-profit in the San Francisco Bay Area before relocating to the Chicago area and being appointed by the Governor of Illinois to the Statewide Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect (SCCAN). MUFON investigates sightings, promotes research and provides education on UFOs. Its website, www.mufon.com, allows people who believe

they have seen UFOs to report them. It also keeps data on sightings. It has a Facebook page and YouTube channel.

The state chapter, Illinois Mutual UFO Network, reported 28 UFO sightings in October.

Sam Maranto, the MUFON state director, said the organization has about 80 members in Illinois.

“It’s not a question of ‘belief’ in UFOs,” Maranto said.

“We know, or we investigate.

John Mars MUFON marketing director … Any report that comes in, we evaluate. If there is anything supportive, such as photographs or other witnesses, we like to interview them, too, and do an analysis.”

He said studying and documenting UFO sightings is important because it will change how people view their position in the universe – once they get past their resistance.

“This has been documented throughout history, not just the last 60 to 70 years,” Maranto said. “I think it will change everything when people realize we are not the center of everything.”

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, has launched a contest to invite residents of the Illinois 11th Congressional District to submit a question for a live discussion with Space Station astronauts. On Wednesday, Foster and members of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion via a live satellite downlink from the International Space Station with NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren. Each member will have the opportunity to ask one question of the astronauts.

Foster is inviting any resident of his district to submit questions.

The winner will be selected and announced Tuesday.

Mars was hooked, and then he went to MUFON’s symposium in California in September, where the guest speaker talked about advanced space propulsion concepts for interstellar travel, how modern physics is revealing the technology of UFOs, and how to make UFO-logy respectable.

“It was blow-away fascinating and exciting,” Mars said.

Pistilli finished second in the 11-and-under children’s category. Two North Aurora men were among the top finishers in the adult category.

Mike Smith finished in third place, and David Scholes earned honorable mention.

According to a news release, nearly 200 photos, including butterflies, snow leopards, gorillas and a variety of bird species, were entered in the contest. A panel of four professional photographers judged the photos, from which they selected a grand prize winner and first-, second- and third-place winners in adult and children’s (11-and-under) categories.

The winning photos are on display in Brookfield Zoo’s Feathers and Scales exhibit through the end of the year.

Awareness about epilepsy is goal of Geneva family

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When the youngest of Denise Ugaste’s three daughters was 17, her daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy – a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.

She and her daughter, Jennifer Andrew, recently spoke at a Geneva City Council meeting to raise awareness of the disorder – and to encourage the public not to be afraid of people with epilepsy.

Aldermen approved a proclamation declaring November as National Epilepsy Awareness Month.

“It came as a huge surprise.

I had no clue how many were affected by it,” Ugaste said.

“But as the proclamation states, it’s much more prevalent than I certainly knew. One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime.

And to me, that’s huge.”

According to the proclamation, 3 million Americans have epilepsy, and one-third of them live with seizures because medicine and surgery will not work for them.

Andrew, now 22, is married, pregnant and temporarily staying with her parents in Geneva while her husband is deployed overseas.

“I lived here for 17 years, and it seemed to be for a year straight, I was ... the girl having epilepsy, the girl having seizures,” Andrew said. “I was so much more than that. … I’m not the girl always having seizures anymore.”

Andrew said she is raising awareness so the public is not afraid of a person having a seizure.

“It’s something that’s feared,” she said. “I’ve never seen one [a seizure], so I don’t know how scary it is. But I don’t want people to be afraid anymore. It’s easier to manage than it seems it would be. And there’s so many people affected by it who are very, very tired

Ugaste said she sought to support the awareness campaign to educate the public.

“Since I couldn’t fix it, and I couldn’t make it go away, I would try do to my best to make my community aware and raise as much funds as I possibly could,” she said.

The purple ribbons up and down State and Third streets are the color of epilepsy awareness, she said.

“We want to raise awareness so people are not afraid and people are not stigmatized,” Ugaste said. “It can be scary, but she’s married. She’s doing well; she’s having her first baby.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Ron Singer asked how epilepsy is caused. Ugaste said sometimes it is hereditary. In other cases – such as her daughter’s – the cause is unknown.

Mayor Kevin Burns praised Andrew for sharing her story.

“Never underestimated the power you have in speaking out and sharing your story with others,” Burns said.

Andrew’s father, attorney Daniel Ugaste, ran an unsuccessful bid in 2014 for the Republican primary for Illinois representative in the 65th District. State Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva, won the GOP nomination and the seat, and is seeking a second term.

GENEVA – Four purses were reported stolen in a series of car burglaries at Geneva Park District facilities, all Nov. 15, according to police reports.

Three were at Peck Farm Park, which is at 4038 Kaneville Road; and one was at Persinger Recreation Center, at 3507 Kaneville Road, which is across the street from Peck Farm Park.

In each incident, a window was broken in the vehicle in order to steal the purse, according to reports.

In one of the Peck Farm Park car burglaries, the purse contained $150 in cash. Another contained $20 cash, in addition to a driver’s license and credit and debit cards.

POLICE REPORTS Geneva • A laptop valued at $1,000 was reported stolen Sunday, Nov. 15, from a car parked in the 1500 block of Sherman Avenue, Geneva.

• Rina M. Molina, 33, of the 1200 block of West Indian Trail, Aurora, was charged Wednesday, Nov. 18, with battery after allegedly pushing someone in the chest, as well as retail theft of a bottle of beer from Fresh Market, l718 Commons Drive, Geneva.

• Jeremy A. Whitman, 34, of the 0-100 block of South Willow Way, North Aurora, was charged Saturday, Nov. 14, with possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Paul J. Fasano, 35, of the 800 block of Meadow Lane, North Aurora, was charged Wednesday, Nov. 18, with driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol level more than 0.08 percent, driving too fast for conditions and illegal transportation of alcohol.

There are 23 million small businesses in the country, according to the Small Business Administration, and small businesses have increased by 49 percent since 1982. More than half – about 54 percent – of sales happen at small businesses, which have created 8 million jobs since 1990.

And this Saturday – after you hit the Black Friday sales at bigger retailers and before you start planning for online deals on Cyber Monday – you are asked to shop at the ones in your community during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday was started in November 2010 by American Express, when the company simply encouraged people to support small, local businesses. By the next year, officials – including governors, mayors, senators and President Barack Obama – voiced their support for the day, according to the Small Business Saturday website.

In 2012, 73.9 million people went out to shop at a small business on Small Business Saturday, and last year, an estimated $14.3 billion were spent at small, independent businesses on Small Business Saturday.

There are numerous advantages to buying local: You’re purchasing from neighbors, who in turn reinvest that money into the community. For every $100 spent at a local, independent store, it generates $45 of secondary local spending. That’s compared to $14 for a big-box chain, according to the American Independent Business Alliance.

In downtown areas of many local communities there are numerous unique boutique shops that easily could make for an entire day of shopping. Looking for clothes, housewares or toys? You’re likely to find something that fits your needs from smaller vendors with a more carefully selected inventory.

And as you head from shop to shop, pop into a local restaurant to partake in food or treats. Our downtowns are filled with wonderful eateries as well.

It’s the time of year we all ask for gifts. What better gift can we bestow upon our local business owners – whom we ask to invest in our communities – than to invest in them?

U.S. shoppers and the holiday season

By MARK WHITEHOUSE Bloomberg View Could Americans be losing their holiday spending spirit?

More than 20 years of retail sales data suggest it’s a distinct possibility.

U.S. retailers have come to rely on a shopping frenzy toward the end of the year, as the annual gift-giving season compels people to open their wallets. That holiday bump, however, appears to be shrinking.

Last year, December’s share of annual retail sales (excluding gasoline) amounted to 9.9 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That compares with a high point of 10.6 percent in 1993 – a difference worth more than $30 billion. Although the holiday boost tends to fluctuate with economic cycles, the trend is down.

What’s going on? “Black Friday” could be partly responsible, if retailers have pulled

some of the holiday action into November with deep discounts and special opening hours. But as Bloomberg View’s Justin Fox notes, that particular shopping event is on the wane. And even combining sales for November and December doesn’t do much to change the long-term trend.

Another potential explanation is that the kinds of things people buy around the holidays – Xboxes, iPads and the like – have become relatively cheap, thanks to the efforts of Chinese manufacturers. This would make the dollar value of December’s spending look smaller, even if people were purchasing just as much stuff. That said, prices on imports from China are higher than they were a decade ago, so maybe not.

There’s also a darker possibility: Declining incomes may have left a large portion of Americans less willing to splurge. The median U.S. household income has fallen more than 3 percent over the

past decade in inflation-adjusted terms. December’s share of spending tends to suffer when budgets are tighter, as evidenced by the sharp drop during the 2008 recession.

Finally, perhaps consumers are just getting less susceptible to holiday marketing. If so, this could be a good thing. Economists argue the annual bout of gift-giving is wasteful, because people tend to get less utility from ill-considered picture frames and electric corkscrews as they would from stuff they bought for themselves.

Some have estimated this “deadweight loss” at billions of dollars a year. Then again, such analyses often ignore the satisfaction people derive from the act of giving. So if you decide to be generous this holiday season, don’t be ashamed.

Rosary’s Yager turned on competitive jets in pool despite shy persona

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com AURORA – Working hard is much easier said than done, but when accomplishments roll in as they have for Rosary junior Alexis Yager, it’s all worth it.

Having repeated as 200yard individual medley state champion at last weekend’s IHSA girls swimming and diving state meet – guiding Rosary to a team state title – Yager has been named the 2015 Kane County Chronicle Girls Swimmer of the Year.

Yager also swam as a state champion in the Beads’ 200 freestyle relay (1:33.72), which set a school record at state, was fourth individually in the 100 breaststroke, and was part of the second-place 400 free relay team as part of taking home four medals at New Trier.

But in talking with the Batavia product, not much about her competitive nature comes out at first glance. Yager describes herself as “very shy and quiet,” but all of that goes away once she hits the water.

“Alex is the kind of girl that is super quiet, a strong leader and just naturally leads by example,” Rosary coach Bill Schalz said. “But as nice as she is out of the pool, once she gets in the pool, she’s this incredibly, talented and competitive racer. She hates to lose. It’s funny, because the only time you see her get mad is when someone says, ‘I’ll get you next time,’ or something like that.

It really bothers her when she doesn’t win.”

Although she didn’t start swimming until age 9, which forced Yager to do some catching up, losing has never been something that she’s been all right with.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a high school swim meet, a simple practice with the Beads swim team or on a higher stage, such

Her 200 IM state title (2:01.58) was a race that might have brought some nerves, but it was one Yager wasn’t going to let be taken away.

“I hate losing. I really do,” Yager said. “In anything we do. Whether it’s practice or anything, I just hate it. I kept telling myself, ‘I have to win “I hate losing. By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Playing without leading scorer Justin Hardy already was going to be enough of a challenge for the St. Charles East boys basketball team as it took the court against defending Class 3A state champion St. Joseph Friday night.

Besides losing Hardy’s scoring, the Saints were without the 6-foot-5 sophomore’s defensive range in the pool play finale of the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament after he took a hard fall in the first quarter of Wednesday’s game against Schaumburg.

That proved to be crucial as the Saints went against the Chargers and 6-foot-11 senior Nick Rakocevic.

Rakocevic had his way for most of the night, putting together a 29-point, 20-rebound performance to lead St. Joseph past East, 67-52. That bumped the host Saints into the thirdplace game against Metea Valley at 6 p.m. today.

“With a size differential like that, you really have to focus on keeping them off the glass,” said 6-foot-3 Evan DiLeonardi, who drew the defensive assignment of Rakocevic for a good portion of Friday’s game. “I had a few mental lapses, and if he gets in position and gets an offensive rebound, it’s automatic points for him. That really can’t happen, and it hurt us tonight.”

While trying to fend off that matchup on the defensive side, DiLeonardi helped East (2-1) jump out to a 14-10 lead after one quarter, thanks to three 3-pointers as part of his teamhigh 18 points. East held the lead in the second quarter before the Chargers (3-0) ended the first half on a 9-0 run and never looked back.

After hardly leading at all in the first half up until that run, St. Joseph held a double-digit lead for most of the second half.

Rakocevic’s 20 rebounds were seven more than the entire East team’s.

“Bottom line is that we got out-rebounded tonight, and that’s what killed us,” East coach Pat Woods said. “I

Woods was more than likely hoping the halftime break would take the momentum away from the Chargers, but

Rakocevic had 12 points – including six straight to start the second half – to put some space between the Chargers and Saints.

“I knew in order for us to win, we couldn’t play a halfcourt game with them,” St, Joseph coach Gene Pingatore said. “Almost every guy (East) puts out there can knock down shots from the outside. We wanted to run the ball and press them to tire their legs a little bit. I feel like that happened toward the end of the game, and it affected their shooting a bit.”

East would not go away and continued to attack Rakocevic in the lane, forcing a fourth foul on the senior center, but could not get him to commit the most important one – his fifth.

The Saints made things interesting with just less than five minutes left when senior Zach Hondlik’s dunk was followed by a steal and layup for Zach Mitchell to draw East within nine at 54-45, forcing Pingatore to take a timeout.

That was the closest East came, as Rakocevic followed with a dunk to cap off a win for the Chargers, sending them into tonight’s championship game against Downers Grove South, which beat St. Charles North earlier Friday.

While DiLeonardi and the Saints never want to lose a game, the team agreed this is a loss they can build on. St. Joseph presents a stiff challenge every season for Woods’ teams, and they hope to respond just as they did last season.

“I mean, we lost to them last year and still went 24-4,” DiLeonardi said. “Every year, it’s a good game. It doesn’t mean much for the rest of the season, but it’s good to learn early and get a game like this under our belts.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North was poised to upend Downers Grove South on Friday night, scoring the first four points of the second half to tie the third-round contest of the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Boys Basketball Tournament at St. Charles East.

However, a 22-5 Downers Grove South run to end the third quarter broke that 41-41 deadlock and led to the Mustangs’ 74-58 victory over the North Stars.

“Downers is tougher than we are right now,” St. Charles North coach Tom Poulin said. “They know how to win. They know how to play in the second half to win.”

The North Stars (1-2) trailed by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, but rallied to close the half down just four points.

With baskets by Griffin Hammer and Jarod Karom to open the third quarter, the North Stars knotted the game and looked to have momentum on their side.

However, the Mustangs (3-0) scored the next eight points as part of their 22-5 run and never looked back. Dennis Alibegovic ignited the run with eight third-quarter points.

“We left shooters open. We didn’t get bodies on people, giving them second chances,” Poulin said. “On offense, we didn’t execute what we wanted to do.”

Poulin said except for brief spurts during the tournament, the North Stars have not played to their offensive identity.

He said with the weeks of preparation the squad went through, it should be playing at a higher level.

“I thought we would be a little more prepared to compete at this point,” he said. “That’s on me.”

Armon Osborne led the North Stars with 13 first-half points, but only managed two points in the second half. Other St. Charles North players scoring in double figures for the game were Karom (12) and Anthony Delisi (11).

Alibegovic led all scorers with 23 points.

Poulin said the tournament gives his players a good opportunity to find out who they are.

“This tournament presents so many challenges for individuals and for our team,” Poulin said. “We are growing as a team with these challenges. We are not matching up against the other teams right now.”

North (1-2) will play East Aurora in the tournament’s fifth-place game at 4 p.m. today.

While there were strong senior leaders in the likes of Katie Rentz and Georgia Young for the Beads this season, it was Yager who had been there and done that, as Schalz said.

“With four freshmen on the team, there was no division between the girls this year, and she had a lot to do with that,” Schalz said. “She has the most state finals experience on this team, and I really think she played such an important role preparing the freshmen, who were our wild card at state. She obviously had a fantastic state meet in the pool, but the way she helped guide the younger

girls was so crucial to us earning what we did.”

Yager took such freshman teammates as Athena Ye – the eventual state champion in the 100 backstroke – and fellow freshman Sydney VanOvermeiren, who Schalz said has become a “little sister to Alex,” under her wing and has helped put Rosary girls swimming back on the map. This season marked Rosary’s first team title since 2009.

You wouldn’t expect anything more from Yager when asked what there is left to accomplish in high school swimming, being at the pinnacle of her sport, or when asked how good next year’s team can be returning all but two swimmers.

“I think we’ll be pretty good.”

Yager may be a girl of few words, but also a girl who always has let her swimming do the talking for her.

That was as close as the hosts came.

“We’re inexperienced. We are young, we don’t have a lot of players who have seen this tough of a game,” firstyear IC coach Kelsey James said. “So when you are playing against a team as experienced as they are, it throws you off a little bit.”

Camri Conley took up the slack left by Crimmins, who sprained her ankle in the second game of the tournament.

The senior guard led all scorers with 20 points – 16 in the second half. Teammate Morgan Weber contributed six points.

“We got a little nervous at the beginning, but we played through it,” Conley said.

Anjella Farmer led IC with 12 points.

ELMHURST – The Kaneland girls basketball team overcame a sluggish first quarter and withstood a second-half surge by host IC Catholic Prep to win the ICCP Basketball Tournament, 48-37, Friday night.

Kaneland, playing without Bailey Crimmins, its top scorer, struggled to make a basket in the first quarter.

Morgan Weber scored the team’s first bucket at the 4:33 mark “Shaky start. We’re playing without Bailey. She’s a big piece of our offense,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “We probably missed five or six pointblank shots in the first quarter.”

Colombe called a timeout with 3:35 left in the first quarter “We told the girls you can’t lose your aggressiveness and not let the missed baskets affect us on defense,” Colombe said. “Sometimes, when you miss a layup, you are dragging a little bit on defense because you are upset about the offense.”

The Knights trailed, 9-6, at the end of the first eight minutes.

Kaneland (4-0) found its shooting touch in the second quarter, going on a 16-2 run to retake the lead. Kylie Modaff started the drive with a short jumper a minute into the period.

Jenni Weber’s first 3-point shot from the right corner at 5:17 gave the Knights the lead, 12-9. Her second trey, from the left wing, capped the run. She finished the night with seven points.

Steel are able to scratch their way past Dubuque

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Several Chicago Steel players skated despondently back to the bench as Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” blared over the loudspeaker.

Such was life after Dubuque scored 5:12 into Friday’s United States Hockey League game at Fox Valley Ice Arena, but the song carried further meaning for a few team members on “Movember” Night.

The Steel grew mustaches throughout November in a bid to promote awareness for men’s health issues as part of the club’s recent partnership with LivingWell Cancer Research Center in Geneva.

Marc Fans voted for Johnstone their favorite Steel ’staches as part of a fundraiser during the Steel’s 3-1 win, even as a handful of players shrugged off their inability to be contestants.

“I don’t grow too much facial hair,” Steel forward Marc Johnstone, 19, grinned this week.

Johnstone isn’t alone, which means he’s all but immune to teammates’ good-natured ribbing on the matter.

“Everyone’s at different stages. Some people have big beards. Some people don’t have anything, like I have,” he said. “So it’s not bad.”

The Steel (8-9-2-1) feature three players selected in June’s 2015 NHL Entry Draft – goaltender Daniel Vladar (Boston, third round) and defensemen Karlis Cukste and Adam Parsells, respective fifth- and sixth-round picks of San Jose.

For those young men and the rest of their teammates, several of whom are committed to major college programs, the whole prospect of “Movember” might have seemed, well, hairy at first blush.

After all, who’d start sprouting a de facto playoff beard the day after Halloween?

Although this promotion didn’t exactly qualify on that level, the Steel hardly sound-

ed as if they would beard (yup, it’s also a verb) something similar down the line.

“You see some of the guys – it’s funny to see some of the guys with it on their face,” said team captain Marcel Godbout, a center who won the vote. “We know it’s all for a good cause. The money’s going toward a good thing, so we enjoy it. We like to support it any way we can.”

Dubuque (11-6-1) outshot the Steel, 33-18, but struggled to convert after persistently challenging Vladar, who stopped 32 of 33 shots and was named the game’s first star.

Capitalizing on what Steel coach Dan Muse called a “next shift” mentality, Tanner Lacynski responded with the equalizer just 2:03 after Dubuque’s lone goal.

“That makes it easier for me that we scored,” said Vladar, an 18-year-old from the Czech Republic who had been out because of injury. “It was 1-1, and we were so much better right after.”

Defenseman Billy Sweezey’s goal 9:05 into the second period held up as the game-winner, his first in the USHL. Sweezey was self-deprecating about converting Max Zimmer’s crisp pass from the boards to the high slot, saying it erased a “legitimate fear” he never would contribute a goal.

The Steel and Fighting Saints will meet at 7:05 p.m. today at Mystique Ice Center in Dubuque, the first of three consecutive road games for the Steel, who relocated from Bensenville entering the season.

Friday’s victory gave the Steel four victories in seven November home games. Two of the losses came in overtime.

“Definitely, everyone has adjusted,” said defenseman Charlie Raith, a healthy scratch from Friday’s lineup.

“We kind of had a slow start early. Maybe that had something to do with it, that guys weren’t used to the competitiveness.”

He meant of the USHL, not the heat of mustache-growing contests.

Then again, that endeavor figures to pay dividends even for the Steel’s baby faces.

“Getting to know each other as a team better and to

know you really like spending time, that helps with the ad-

justment to the league,” Raith said.

NIU football back in MAC title game

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois football team took the long route to Detroit. Western Michigan knocked off Toledo, 35-30, on Friday, forcing a four-way tie atop the Mid-American Conference West and pushing the Huskies to the MAC championship game via tiebreaker.

The Huskies (8-4 overall, 6-2 in MAC West) will play Bowling Green (9-3, 7-1 MAC East) for the conference championship at 7 p.m. Friday at Ford Field in Detroit

“It’s such an accomplishment, not just because it’s the sixth year in a row, but because everything we’ve went through this year,” said NIU coach Rod Carey, whose Huskies have dealt with a variety of injuries – including to the top three quarterbacks – in 2015. “Just to get back and play for another MAC championship, I’m so happy for our seniors.”

It will be the sixth consecutive trip to play for the MAC title for the Huskies, joining Marshall (1997 to 2002) as the only teams to advance to the championship game that many years in a row.

It’s also the third straight meeting between the Huskies and Falcons in the title game – with NIU winning last year and the Falcons taking the league title in 2013.

CRYSTAL LAKE – The Geneva boys basketball team advanced to today’s Crystal Lake Central Tournament championship game with a 58-46 victory Friday against Prairie Ridge.

The Wolves outscored the Vikings, 21-5, in the fourth quarter, but Geneva had built enough of a cushion because of big games from Bennett Fuzak (17 points) and Jordan Vedder (16).

“The first three quarters, we did a fantastic job of executing our game plan,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said. “We knew Prairie Ridge was going to have to make some adjustments and ratchet up the pressure full-court to make it difficult for us. I don’t know if it was complacency of sitting on a big lead like that or trying to rotate some other guys in.

“Our focus wasn’t there at the end of the game to close it out the way we would like to. Credit PR for not ever quitting in the game. They went out there and played hard the entire 32 minutes. We kind of walked through like we won.”

WEEKEND LIFE ‘If you look for the New books speak volumes about citrus helpers, you’ll know that there’s hope’ TOM’S COOKBOOK LIBRARY

“Citrus can brighten one’s kitchen and cooking,” writes columnist Tom Witom in his review of the cookbooks “Citrus” and “Sweet and Tart.”

The motherhood is sad, this week. Not just in my house, because my 17-yearold was mad at me for a few minutes, but everywhere.

Because 17-year-olds who make poor choices can be executed by men who, out of their fear, make even poorer choices. Even here, in the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

Brave? How brave are we, really? I’ve never had to flee my homeland. With my babies. On the sea. Have you?

That’s brave. But some in the motherhood, in my homeland, don’t think we should help those other mothers and fathers who have. I don’t get it. It’s all I can think about.

I “get” being afraid. I get wanting myself and my children to be safe from harm.

I even get being afraid the moms and dads and children on those rafts, with their soiled diapers and soiled faces, possessing nothing but a primordial fear for their own lives, could somehow hurt us. I do. Fearing that doesn’t make you a bad human. But being unwilling to learn what it takes to overcome that fear, so that the real dangers are separated from the imagined, comes close.

Here’s how I handled my fear. I did some reading. I learned that the process of gaining asylum in the U.S. is no picnic. It involves a ton of screening, and can take years. But that’s not my plight. A mere accident of birth, is what that is. I have a tough time enjoying the good fortune I have, while others have nothing. I’m not suggesting we not celebrate our good fortunes, but in my humble opinion, we should teach our children to share it. All of it.

Wow. Loaves and fishes, people. Speaking of Jesus, he was a refugee, too. And, as other writers have reminded us, he was no sissy. So, in all seriousness, what would Jesus do?

If you can’t be there on the shore to wrap someone else’s precious one in a warm blanket, be there in spirit.

Tell your elected officials how you feel. God forbid it’s our families on those rafts, someday, praying someone cares enough to pick up that phone or write that letter or stand in that voting booth, holding fast to that blazing lamp and lifting it high, to send us light and love when we desperately need it.

You’ve likely heard that Fred Rogers’ quote, where he recollects his own mother’s words, but I think they bear repeating: “My mother used to say ... whenever there would be any real catastrophe ... she would say: ‘Always look for the helpers. There will always be helpers just on the sidelines.’ ... Because if you look for the helpers, you’ll know that there’s hope.”

The Syrian refugees want what we all want. Hope for our children. Even the French, the most recent targets of the terrorism we fear, have stepped up to help.

We can be helpers, too. But first, we have to be brave.

The expressive flavors of citrus can brighten one’s kitchen and cooking.

Home cooks are twice blessed by the recent release of two excellent volumes that shed welcome light on the subject.

“Citrus” (Ten Speed Press),

by Los Angeles-based cookbook author and food stylist Valerie Aikman-Smith, offers an impressive collection of 75 foolproof recipes using the most common citrus fruits, such as Ruby grapefruit, Valencia oranges and citron, to lower-profile kumquat and yuzu. Meanwhile, mouthwatering photos by Victoria Pearson provide extra panache.

Recipes cover Meyer Lemon and Thyme Hearth Bread, Tropical Granola with Candied Lime, Orange and Compari Marmalade, Dark Chocolate Waffles with Maple Kumquats, and Yellow Grapefruit and Avocado Salad (below).

“Sweet and Tart” (Chronicle) is by Ohio-based food writer and teacher Carla Snyder, who proclaims in the introduction: “I always say, when life gives you lemons, make dessert.” Her book’s 70 accessible recipes provide bakers with numerous ways to incorporate citrus notes into traditional and contemporary cookies, breads, pastries and curds.

Photos by Nicole Franzen are sprinkled throughout the book and provide added incentive for trying Snyder’s recipes. A case in point: the Orangey Fig and Almond Biscotti (recipe follows).

Yellow Grapefruit and Avocado Salad (from “Citrus”) (Serves 4)

• 1 yellow grapefruit, peeled • 1 avocado, halved-pitted, peeled and sliced • 2 cups baby kale or similar greens

Vinaigrette oil

• ¼ cup extra virgin olive

• 2 Tbl. cherry vinegar • 1 tsp. chopped tarragon • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Quarter the grapefruit, then cut into ¼-inch slices.

Arrange on a platter or in a shallow bowl. Top with the avocado slices, then sprinkle with the baby kale.

To make the vinaigrette, in a small bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, mustard and tarragon. Season with salt and pepper.

Pour the vinaigrette over the salad and serve.

Orangey Fig and Almond Biscotti (from “Sweet and Tart”) (Makes about 36 biscotti)

• 1 ½ cups slivered almonds • 2 ¾ cups unbleached all-purpose flour • 1 ½ tsp. baking powder • ½ tsp. kosher salt • 1 ½ cups sugar • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened • Zest of 3 oranges • 2 large eggs • ¼ cup Cointreau or other orange-favored liqueur • 1 ½ cup stemmed and quartered dried Mission figs Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Set aside.

Spread the almonds out in a small baking pan and bake for 5 minutes, stirring once.

Check to see if they’ve begun to brown and toast; they should be fragrant and golden in color. If needed, continue baking for a few more minutes

to finish browning. It’s best to check frequently, as nuts can overbrown quickly. Let the nuts cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.

Whisk the flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl until combined. Set aside.

Beat the sugar, butter and orange zest in a mixer bowl on medium-high speed until mixed well. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat until blended. Add the Cointreau and beat until combined. Turn the speed to low, and add the flour mixture, almonds and figs, and beat until combined.

Divide the dough into thirds. Shape each piece into a 10-by-3-inch log and place on one of the prepared baking sheets. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until browned but still soft, rotating the baking sheet 180 degrees about halfway through the baking time.

Let cool completely on the baking sheet on a wire rack.

Transfer the logs to a cutting board and cut crosswise into ¾-inch slices. Return the cookies, cut-side up, to both baking sheets. Lower the oven temperature to 300 degrees F and bake for 15 minutes. Turn the cookies over, rotate the baking sheets and bake for another 10 minutes, or until crispy and somewhat dried.

Let cool completely on the baking sheets on wire racks.

Store, covered, at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 6 weeks.

In addition to three meals, most children need mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. Be sure to offer healthy snacks: • Fresh and dried fruits • Vegetables with lowfat dip • Yogurt and low-fat milk • Whole-grain bread, whole-grain crackers, unsalted whole-wheat pretzels • Peanut butter, hummus, bean dip By age 5, all children should be following the same heart-healthy diet as you. That’s right, by age 5.

You know the drill: • Switch to low-fat or nonfat milk and reduced-fat cheese and yogurt.

• Limit fried foods.

• Have a wide variety of fruits and vegetables on hand. Serve them for snacks rather than cookies, chips, ice cream or other high-fat foods.

• Avoid soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened drinks. They are a major contributor to weight gain.

Regular exercise is no less important than a healthy diet in preventing childhood obesity, and it is also beneficial to a child’s overall health. It almost surely reduces the risk for Type 2 diabetes, for example.

Finally, don’t forget to set a good example for your son. He’s unlikely to reach for carrot sticks if you’re snacking on cookies.

Dr. Wallace: I read recently that our schools should provide more after-school activities for students who could be classified as “home alone” students. I object! I’m a junior high school teacher. Students come to school to learn the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic, not soccer, gymnastics and table tennis.

Why should the school be forced to provide “quality” activities to students whose parents hold down two jobs just to keep up with the Joneses? We teachers are already are forced to teach their students things the parents should be responsible for.

We teach children how to drive a car and why they shouldn’t have sex. Now we are expected to babysit them after school so Mama and Papa can make more money.

Please, give me a break.

Some schools provide breakfast for students, all provide lunch and I wouldn’t be surprised if we started serving dinner. After all, it’s apparently the school’s responsibility to see that all of its students get three well-balanced meals daily. Most parents are selfish and are more than happy to have the schools take full responsibility to teach their children things that only parents should teach. The term for your attitude is “burnout.”

That being said let me respond to your remarks. Yes, our schools do more than teach reading, writing and arithmetic, but the various activities you denigrate complement an academic curriculum and should not be considered detriments. It’s called balance.

Schools are centers for all kinds of learning. Children need skills in many areas to make the transition to adulthood, and a great deal of those requisite skills, over the course of many, many decades, have become the responsibility, or co-responsibility, of the American school system. This includes driving training and sex education.

In both cases, schools are in an excellent position to supplement parental efforts.

For instance, a state-certified driving instructor can teach young people rules of the road and proper procedures in a systematic way, something most parents would be unable to do.

Wise parents combine their own driving experience with the school instruction to help their children become consci-

entious drivers, and everyone benefits.

Much the same is true about sex education. Teachers are in a good position to give young people a health and safety overview about sex and reproduction that supplements parental guidance.

Schools can’t do it alone, of course, but even in those (sadly, far too numerous) situations where parents abandon their responsibilities, at least teens are getting some guidance about safe sex.

The boost for a quality after-school program for “home alone” students is primarily due to a recent survey. The Junior Achievement/Harris Interactive Poll of youths between ages eight and 14 found that 33 percent of the boys and 11 percent of the girls spend two or more hours home alone after school, and only about 12 percent of these students participate in organized after-school activities, the poll showed.

The National Center for Juvenile Justice has reported that children are at greater risk of becoming involved in crime and substance abuse when left alone after school.

That’s why schools need to provide this service. It benefits all concerned -- parents, community, and, most of all, the students.

Dear Dr. K: My 9-year-old son is very overweight. I don’t want to make a big deal about his eating habits, because I assume he’ll grow out of his obesity later in life, and because we already set so many rules for him to follow. Do you agree?

Dear Reader: I wish I could, but I can’t. A child’s eating habits, and weight, can adversely affect his or her health later in life.

The healthy eating habits you set with young kids not only influence their eating habits later in life, they also influence the chemistry of your kids’ bodies so they are less likely to get fat as adults.

All the talk about childhood obesity is not just media hype. The number of children who are overweight or obese is increasing at an alarming rate.

These kids are at much higher risk for developing serious health problems as adults – high blood pressure, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Not only that: They’re even at increased risk for developing “adult” diseases when they’re still children. A growing number of obese kids are developing the condition that used to be called “adult onset” diabetes (better called Type 2 diabetes). When I was a medical student, you rarely saw people with that disease who were younger than 50. Today, you see it in teenagers who have been obese since early childhood.

Kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years typically need between 1,500 and 2,000 calories per day, from a variety of healthy foods. An average day’s diet should look like this: • Grains (preferably whole grains): 6 servings • Vegetables: 2 to 3 servings • Fruits: 2 to 3 servings • Dairy: 2 servings

Dear Abby: I have a neighbor, “Mrs. Smith,” whom I see often in another neighbor’s yard, “the Joneses,” when they are not home. I have seen Mrs. Smith pick vegetables from their garden and take them to her house, and Mr. Smith connect extension cords that run to their home in the winter months when the owners are away. The Smiths are at least in their 60s and well off.

While it’s possible the Joneses don’t mind sharing their garden and electricity with this couple, it does seem unusual. We have security cameras in our yard to discourage the Smiths from coming onto our property.

Should I tell the Joneses about these people and, if so, what would be the best way to approach the subject? Or should I just mind my own business?

I would consider someone a good neighbor if they told me someone was coming onto my property like this, but I can’t assume others feel the same way – especially since they seem friendly toward each other and share a property line.

I read a fair amount of material from fellow bridge writers, and we are all occasionally unintentionally incorrect. But once in a while someone gives what I deem to be very bad advice. Look at today’s North hand. Your partner opens one club, you respond one heart, and he rebids one spade.

What would you do now?

You have 13 points, and your partner opened the bidding. You must insist on reaching a game contract – but which one? It could be three no-trump, but you have no diamond stopper. If your partner does, fine; but if he does not, perhaps you can make five clubs. How do you ask partner if he has a diamond stopper?

You rebid two diamonds, fourth suit game-forcing. Here, partner would continue with two no-trump, which you would raise. What should partner do after West leads the diamond king?

The writer advised his readers to rebid three clubs, if that were forcing.

He added that if, like most pairs, you play it as only invitational, bid three clubs anyway and hope that you don’t miss a game! He then appended a comment that you might try a “devious” two diamonds. Why is it devious?

It is the right bid.

In three no-trump, South needs to take three spades, one heart, one diamond and four clubs.

However, the opponents are threatening to take one spade and four diamonds. South must duck the first diamond, take the second trick (not duck again, for fear that West shifts to a heart), and play on spades to get home.
