Thanksgiving at The Holmstad Among reasons to be thankful – friendship, health and love

“We were engaged by the end of the year,” Ann Rowland said. They have been married for 16 years.

In one dining room area, four residents – Junellen Johnson, Louise Popovich, Marlene Murphy and Elsie Erickson – said they were thankful for their longtime friendship they have enjoyed at The Holmstad.

Johnson, who has been a resident for six years, said she came from Arizona and moved to The Holmstad when her family moved to Batavia.

Murphy said she was grateful for her growing family. She has a new great-granddaughter and there is more to come.

She said she was thankful for “the care that they give us and their concern for our health.”

As Erickson’s Thanksgiving dinner was served, she smiled and said she was grateful “that we get our meals, and I don’t have to cook much.” She added she was “thankful for the Lord’s

blessing.”

John and Barbara Anderlik were taking part in a Thanksgiving tradition that Barbara Anderlik said would be “getting our meal, and then we watch football.” She said she was looking forward to watching the Bears play the Detroit Lions.

Barbara Anderlik said The Holmstad’s meals were “like this every day,” but said it’s more busy during holidays because some residents welcome in their families. She said the experience was “just like home.” Her husband agreed.

“It’s a good place to be,” John Anderlik said.

BATAVIA – Bob Rowland wore a suit and tie Thursday as he settled into his seat at a table at The Holmstad in Batavia.

Rowland, a 25-year resident of the retirement community, said there were many reasons to be thankful as he gave his order for the community’s annual Thanksgiving feast.

Rowland said he enjoyed the lifestyle, adding that “the grass is cut; the sidewalks are shoveled … it really is wonderful.”

But he needed only to look to his left and see his wife of 16 years, Ann, to find an even more significant reason.

The Holmstad’s dining areas were bustling with activity, with groups of residents smiling as they dined together, some welcoming in family members. Several provided reasons to be thankful – good meals and friendships they have enjoyed. Ann Rowland’s reason to be thankful was a love story that continues to this day.

Bob and Ann Rowland shared their story – they were two classmates who had known each other since fourth grade. They dated in high school, but they had gone 50 years without seeing each other until a class reunion, which each attended with their respective spouse.

But by the high school class’ 60th reunion, the situation for both had changed.

He wrote her a letter, asking whether she would attend the 60th reunion with her husband. By then, both had been through the death of a spouse.

Ann Rowland said she “immediately” responded with a letter explaining her situation. She was living in

Perez ends tenure as Kane County sheriff this weekend

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Sheriff Pat Perez should have listened to his wife.

When he bought two storage tubs for the personal items in his office – eight years worth of plaques, framed photos and documents, and other miscellaneous belongings – she laughed, knowing two wouldn’t be enough, he said.

She was right, the retiring sheriff said last week, noting he added to his initial purchase.

By now, Perez’s office in St. Charles Township should be ready for Sheriff-elect Don Kramer, as Perez said his last day at the office was to be Wednesday.

His official last day as sheriff will be Sunday, ending a 22-year career with the agency. Kramer is set to be sworn in as sheriff Monday morning.

As a firm believer in term limits, Perez said he knew when he was elected in 2006 that he would serve only two terms, he said. Any longer, he said, and he would likely start to lose enthusiasm and energy and could fall into the trap of getting too full of himself.

“I just knew it’s my time,” said Perez, 57.

He is leaving the agency with good relationships with other county officials, including Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon. McMahon said his office has enjoyed “an excellent relationship” with the sheriff and his staff.

The state’s attorney noted they shared similar philosophies about addressing crime not only through arrests, but also by working with community groups and offenders after they enter the system so they don’t become habitual offenders.

“I enjoyed working with the sheriff,” McMahon said.

A tenure marked by changes, challenges Perez aimed to leave the office better than he found it – a goal he believes he and the rest of his team fulfilled, he said.

Undersheriff Pat Gengler agreed and specifically noted improved relations between the sheriff’s office and the Kane County Board and the board’s chairman.

The County Board recognized Perez at its November meeting. In summarizing the Democrat’s tenure, board member Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, said Perez raised accountability in the jail, reduced lawsuits against personnel

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez first was elected in 2006. He is retiring after serving two terms. and, among other accomplishments, spearheaded the August 2008 move of the sheriff’s office and jail.

“I thought as a law-enforcement agency we could be doing things much better than we were,” Perez said of why he sought office.

Soon after he was elected, he established the department’s Office of Professional Standards and random mandatory drug testing for employees, beginning with the deputies, Perez said.

“To me, these are huge changes,” he said. “It’s accountability.”

Changes at the jail – such as switching to direct supervision from indirect supervision and adding video cameras – reduced incidents of theft between inmates, vandalism and phony lawsuits, Perez said.

But Perez also faced financial challenges. Aside from the death of his parents, he said, the recession was the most difficult event he had to go through.

“I dreaded it ever happening again,” he said.

The economic downturn taught law enforcement agencies to share resources and to do the best they could with what they had to work with, Perez said. Here,

he said, deputies made concessions in wages and uniform allowances to prevent layoffs, he said, and he eliminated two high-level positions.

“To me, it was a no-brainer,” he said of deciding where to make cuts, “but it wasn’t easy.”

Caring leader While the public might recognize Perez for what he’s done for the community, Gengler said few realize how much he cares about those who work at the sheriff’s office.

Budget battles with the County Board that threatened layoffs bothered Perez because he knew anyone laid off would likely have a family to support and a mortgage and bills to pay, Gengler said.

“You can tell he really does care about the people who work there,” the undersheriff said, noting Perez often walked around the office, talking with employees.

Perez compared the sheriff’s office to a family, as they share each other’s celebrations – such as marriages and births – and each other’s losses.

“I have a great love for the people who work here,” Perez said.

Time for family Although he is retiring as sheriff, Perez plans to continue working with McGrath Consulting Group, which provides consulting services for fire, EMS and police.

But No. 1 on his retirement list is spoiling his granddaughter and his grandson-to-be, Perez said, noting becoming a grandfather two years ago changed his life.

“Now it’s time to give [time] to my family,” he said.

Just as his father left the sheriff’s office as he was beginning his law enforcement career, so, too, is Perez leaving the agency with his family’s next generation. He said both his sons, ages 27 and 24, work in the office – one in court security and one as a deputy.

“They need to be recognized for the work that they do,” Bryant said.

OEM accepts volunteer applications throughout the year, he said, but new member orientation is held twice a year – in the spring and the fall.

“The more people we get, the better,” Bryant said.

Volunteers must be at least 18, have a valid driver’s license and go through a six-month probation period, Bryant said.

“It gives them a chance to see if volunteering for the county is something they really want to do,” he said, adding it gives his office an opportunity to assess the new members’ skills and training needs.

Bryant described the volunteers as a diverse group, both in age and in profession. Younger members sometimes use the experience as a stepping stone for other public safety jobs, he said, while others have been with the office for more than 20 years.

“It’s a very tight-knit group,” Bryant said, “more like a family than anything else.”

With only three paid employees, the Kane County Office of Emergency Management depends a lot on volunteers.

As a way to recognize their commitment, Director Don Bryant nominated those who were eligible for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

“This is the first year we’ve done this,” he said.

According to its website, the President’s Volunteer Service Award is a three-tiered award.

Adults qualify for the bronze level with 100 to 249 hours of service; the silver award with 250 to 499 hours; and the gold award with 500 or more hours.

Hours are measured over a 12-month period.

OEM has about 65 responding volunteers, 16 of whom logged more than 100 hours, and four of whom surpassed 200, Bryant said. He said the 20 honorees are receiving the award’s bronze level.

The recipients will be recognized Wednesday at the office’s annual volunteer appreciation dinner, Bryant said.

On average, he said, his office gets called out about 100 times a year. Volunteers augment the local first responders at such scenes as major traffic accidents, large fires and natural disasters, like floods.

Celebration of Lights Festival set in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Sunday’s Celebration of Lights Festival in downtown Batavia will help usher in the holiday season with a community sing-a-long, hayrides and a visit by Santa.

“It’s our way to give back to the community,” said Kari Felkamp, director of marketing for the Batavia Park District.

The festival is presented by the Batavia Park District in partnership with the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Batavia MainStreet, the city of Batavia and the Batavia Police Department. The festival will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and North Island Avenue.

For the 15th year, Batavia business owner Craig Foltos will be the festival’s master of ceremonies and will lead everyone in a community sing-a-long at 5:45 p.m., accompanied by the Batavia Community Band, until Santa arrives at 6 p.m.

ke then will greet Santa, and they will light the community Christmas tree.

“I love seeing kids’ faces light up and hearing their voices rise up,” Foltos said.

After the tree lighting, Santa’s warming house – at the Peg Bond Center – will open, and children up to age 10 who visit with Santa will receive a special gift while supplies last.

The festival also will feature 25 trees decorated by local organizations that will line Christmas Tree Lane.

Other activities include free hayrides with a food or cash donation, with donations going to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. There also will be a story hour from 6:15 to 7 p.m. at the Gustafson Research Center, in the lower level of the Batavia Depot Museum. The event is hosted by the Batavia Public Library.

Geneva police warn residents of phone scam KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva Police Department is warning residents about bogus phone calls from people purporting to be with the Internal Revenue Service.

According to a city news release, numerous residents have reported getting calls demanding payment for taxes allegedly owed. The callers demand payment immediately via a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer, the release states.

Threats of arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license are reportedly common, and in many cases callers become hostile and insulting.

The release lists other common scam patterns: • Using common names and fake IRS badge numbers.

• Knowing the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security number.

• Making the caller ID appear as if the IRS is calling.

• Sending fake IRS emails to support the calls.

• Calling a second time claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles and having the caller ID appear to support these claims.

Residents who receive such calls should hang up and call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to receive help with any legitimate outstanding tax payment questions.

If no taxes are owed, report the incident to the treasury inspector general for tax administration at 800-366-4484.

Complaints also can be filed with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments.

According to the release, residents should be wary of unexpected calls or emails purportedly from the IRS; the agency usually makes its first contact by mail.

Additionally, the release states, the IRS will not ask for a credit card number over the phone; payments by a prepaid debit card or wire trans-

fer; or such personal information as PINs, passwords and similar confidential bank account information. Visit www.

Rotary Club of Geneva looking for host families

CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – An early-morning fire Thursday caused $200,000 in damage to a Campton Township home, but there were no injuries reported.

Greg Benson, chief of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, said occupants of the house, at 6N989 Crestwood Drive in Campton Township, were not home at the time of the fire. It was reported by a neighbor at 1:27 a.m., Benson said. Benson said the home was not inhabitable.

Benson said the fire did not appear to be related to the Thanksgiving holiday.

In a news release, he issued a note that people should “make sure smoke detectors are present and operating on all floors of the home. Ensure all wood-burning fireplaces are properly installed and maintained.” Reached via phone, Benson said the fire started in the area of where a wood-burning fireplace was installed, but he said it is too early in the investigation to state whether that is what caused the fire.

He said the fire remains under investigation.

In the release, Benson wrote that firefighters arrived at the single-family, tri-level home and found heavy fire coming from the second sto-

ry in the east and south windows. The report indicated that fire also had extended to the attic area.

“Crews began fire control from the exterior and then transitioned to interior attack,” the report stated.

“Crews found floor and roof in fire area had already collapsed, indicating extended burning prior to being reported.”

The reported indicate that “rapid actions by first-arriving crews contained the fire to initially involved areas,” which were identified as a family room with a wood-burning dove and a bedroom located directly above.

Benson credited help from road crews, who spread a de-icing agent to roadways.

He said conditions were difficult for those fighting the fire.

“As you can well imagine, it was 15 degrees, and any water turned to ice almost immediately,” Benson said, adding that conditions were slippery, but firefighters were careful.

Other agencies, including Bartlett, Pingree Grove, Burlington, South Elgin, West Chicago, Geneva, Elburn, St. Charles, Hampshire and West Dundee assisted at the scene. Batavia, Sycamore, Streamwood and Hanover Park assisted with the change of quarters. Campton Hills police and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic.

Congressional tax talks threaten to blow new hole in budget THE WASHINGTON POST Republicans and Democrats hardly agree on anything these days, with one exception: It’s a lot easier to hand out tax breaks to special interests when you don’t have to offset them with spending cuts or tax increases on someone else.

Consider the negotiations underway between the Republican-controlled House and the (still) Democratic-led Senate over a “tax extenders” tax bill. This legislation is a periodic bonanza for lobbyists, necessitated by Congress’s bad habit of adopting certain tax deductions and credits on a temporary but renewable basis. It’s a fiscal potpourri made up of some

items that are large and rational (a business credit for research and development) and some that are small and parochial (a break on auto racetracks). The total annual price tag runs to tens of billions of dollars.

Traditionally, Congress considered the tax extenders bill must-pass legislation, free of the usual requirement to be fully “paid for” because it would include a “fix” to the otherwise oppressive alternative minimum tax.

That tax got permanently repaired at the end of 2012, however. So, in theory, Congress should have to “pay for” the next tax extenders bill, which must be enacted by the end of the year so that taxpayers enter the 2015

filing season knowing what rules apply to their 2014 income.

In theory. In practice, soon-to-be-ex-House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Michigan, and soon-to-be-ex-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, are discussing a deal under which some of the costliest temporary tax breaks, such as the research and development credit, a small-business-investment deduction and a college-tuition credit, would become permanent. Others, such as bonus depreciation for business, would be extended – and none would be paid for.

While undoubtedly the path of least resistance for legislators, this approach

could skew any future tax-reform effort. Switching the tax breaks in the extenders bill from one- or two-year items to permanent ones would lower expected revenue by more than $400 billion over 10 years, according to news reports on the negotiations. The rate-cutting process under tax reform would have to produce only that amount of revenue to be considered “deficit-neutral.”

The burden of balancing the budget would accordingly fall more heavily on the spending side – or perhaps on tax-code benefits for the poor, like the earned-income tax credit and the child tax credit, both of which expire in 2017 but are reportedly not slated for newly permanent

status in the discussions on Capitol Hill.

There would be a certain transparency in finally dropping the pretense that certain oft- renewed breaks, most notably the research and development credit, are temporary. The problem is simply the practical one of blowing a new hole in the budget while making the long-term goal of bipartisan tax reform harder to achieve.

Congress should allow more of the temporary special breaks to expire while paying for more of the ones it chooses to make permanent.

Instead, it may be about to force President Barack Obama to choose between signing a bad bill or none at all.

This behavior of disregard for authority, failure to follow police instructions and being combative with police – this is all learned behavior. It coincides with the mentality of those who attack people and destroy property after winning a simple athletic event.

The police are trained to respond to aggressive behavior and safely go home at the end of the day.

Whatever spin these protesters want to put on it, the fact is, if this person complied with the officers commands, he would not have gotten shot.

Hlava wreaked havoc on ‘D,’ allowed others to follow

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Watching him on the field suggests otherwise, but Batavia senior Jake Hlava is capable of deliberation when it comes to football.

Hlava saw merits in his contributions on both sides of the ball in his final prep season, yet sounded conflicted on which plays provided the bigger thrill.

“To be honest, I try to bring the same intensity on defense as I do on offense, but really, there’s nothing like hitting quarterbacks on defense,” he said. “But offense is pretty fun. There’s nothing like scoring a touchdown.”

Hlava collected 13½ sacks as a blitz-happy linebacker in 2014 while contributing three touchdowns and scores of key blocks as a midseason addition to the Bulldogs’ power running game. The Kane County Chronicle Football Player of the Year helped steer Batavia to a fourth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title and, per usual, was right in the middle of a narrow, firstround loss to perennial contender Mount Carmel in the Class 7A playoffs.

“I think all the practices, all the sweat and all the dedication I did, all the hard work I did in the offseason really paid off,” Hlava said. “Because you could see, I made huge progressions from my junior to senior year. I wasn’t a huge playmaker as a junior. I was a playmaker, but I wasn’t someone offenses just game-planned around. But then senior year, me along with … some other guys were guys that other teams feared.

And teams played their whole offense around avoiding them.”

As a junior, Hlava had one sack and 10 quarterback hurries, bringing consistency to the Class 6A champs’ defense, but not the kind of sizzle he

In the offseason, Bulldogs defensive coordinator Matt Holm – an impact linebacker in his own Batavia playing days – challenged Hlava to take more of a vocal leadership role. After all, he had been on the field for much of the season, let alone the championship game victory against Richards.

Harnessing his fitness through personal workouts and sessions with Batavia-based Pro Force Sports Performance Training, Hlava added 10 to 15 pounds of muscle and played between 215 and 220 as a senior.

Paired with Holm’s schemes, which frequently put him on an opponent’s weak side, Hlava excelled behind added strength, speed

and flexibility.

“At the snap of the ball, he could come from five yards back and be in your face in the backfield,” Holm said, “and you didn’t really have a clue he was coming.”

Hlava set Batavia’s single-season sack record by one half-sack on the heels of dueling sack performances from defensive ends and classmates Noah Frazier (13) and Josh Leonhard (12) in 2013.

Holm estimates he sent Hlava on blitzes about 50 percent of the time, bringing him from various positions and angles along the way. Still, Holm notes Hlava’s impact “was much greater than just what he was able to do himself.” With opponents keying on him, it created great flexibility for the Batavia defense.

Four other Bulldogs had at least six sacks, including junior middle linebacker Colin Thurston, who played a key role down the stretch of a narrow, 26-20, home win against Geneva in Week 8 that determined the conference champion.

“If they’re trying to pick up Jake all the time, then me or Noah could come free,” said Leonhard, Hlava’s close friend since third grade. “It just seemed like it worked early well no matter who was coming.”

Added Bulldogs’ coach Dennis Piron: “We weren’t a team that your really wanted to drop back and pass against without sort of an eternal time clock. … Jake seemed to be at the pivotal moment of most of those games.”

Hlava’s defensive pedigree earned him recognition as an Illinois High School Football Coaches Association all-state pick in Class 7A, but his offensive contributions also were crucial.

Following Piron and offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari’s recent custom of cultivating defenders in the offensive backfield to diversify the postseason running attack, Hlava rushed 13 times for 103 yards and three touchdowns.

His biggest carry as a fullback is unquestioned. In Week 5, with Batavia holding the same 14-7 lead it had since halftime, Hlava burst down the sideline for a game-sealing, 46-yard touchdown with 2:11 to play.

As the run ended Saturday with Nazareth Academy’s 5628 rout in a Class 6A semifinal, the Spartans did not transform into a lowercase blue crew.

Kane County Chronicle Coach of the Year Mike Fitzgerald wouldn’t allow it.

Fitzgerald consoled many players in the moments after his first season at the school concluded, but he closed every encounter with a message: There’s plenty to celebrate, too, boys.

“Oh, he’s great. I mean, he’s the reason that we made it this far,” Spartans senior wide receiver/defensive back Nick Ahern said. “He’s an exceptional coach. Just amazing. Not just from the football standpoint, but also just as a friend and as a leader. He’s just amazing.”

Playing in 6A for the first time in school history, sixth-seeded St. Francis came within one victory of competing for a state title. There were many catalysts along the way, including a five-game winning streak that closed the regular season. 5A state finalist Montini was among the casualties.

Acclimating to a new conference, the Chicago Catholic Green, St. Francis shared the league title with Montini af-

ter progressively mastering the spread offense Fitzgerald brought from Marist. The Redhawks’ offensive coordinator of six seasons began commuting to St. Francis for weight training and other offseason sessions when he was announced as the successor to Wing-T devotee Greg Purnell in February.

He soon discovered a core of upperclassmen eager to learn – seniors such as two-way lineman Quinn CalMike cagno, linebackFitzgerald er/offensive lineman John Vargyas and quarterback Clint Bobowski – whose work ethic paid early dividends. And restored Fitzgerald’s faith.

“Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of seniors to come in with,” Fitzgerald said. “I told them they pretty much epitomize everything I accomplish with this football program, and they really just set a foundation of what I want St. Francis football to be all about. The kids are selfless, committed and they’re winners, you know.

“I know the scoreboard [Saturday] doesn’t define who they are, for sure. Because they had a heck of a run and we’ve been so focused each week, we haven’t really gotten to enjoy what we’ve accomplished. And we

can do that now.”

St. Francis endured a season-threatening ankle injury to primary running back Steven Fassnacht in a Week 3 home loss to Marmion. Another senior who demonstrated diligence, Fassnacht embraced a busy physical therapy regimen to return for the middle of the playoff run. He scored a touchdown against Hinsdale South in a quarterfinal romp and also ran for a score in the Nazareth game.

Early Spartans mistakes helped the top-seeded Roadrunners roll to a 28-0 lead after one quarter, but Nazareth coach Tim Racki remained complimentary of Fitzgerald. The two matched Xs and Os in the East Suburban Catholic Conference during Fitzgerald’s time at Marist.

“His offense – in the amount of time that he’s been there and what he’s got those kids doing – is impressive but not surprising, since I know Mike,” Racki said.

The players who just made Fitzgerald’s acquaintance nine months ago offered similar reviews.

“He’s got a new intensity about him. The kids love him.

He’s changed our lives, you know, and he gets us excited to play every single week,” Vargyas said. “And we love him.

He’s the best coach I’ve ever had. It’s awesome playing under him.”

A track athlete for his first three high school years, Hlava has elected to keep work-

ing out on his own and with Pro Force as he navigates the college recruiting process.

The biggest schools to express interest thus far are Illinois and Indiana, Hlava said, with Mid-American Conference programs Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan contacting him, too.

Smaller in-state schools Southern Illinois, Western Illinois and Eastern Illinois

also are in the mix.

Wherever he winds up, Hlava is confident he can keep excelling.

As always, his teammates and coaches back up that belief.

“I talk to the guys about it all the time. It’s an emotional game, it’s an intellectual game and it’s a physical game,” Holm said. “And he certainly had all three facets.”

Pinned to their seats: For one night only, the Batavia Drama Club will yield the stage to a most physically demanding production.

The school’s Batavia Fine Arts Centre – not the adjacent gymnasium – is set to house an Upstate Eight Conference River Division wrestling dual between the Bulldogs and Geneva on Jan. 15.

True to the theater, Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer already offers a tagline: “It’s the first time that the BFAC has ever seen singlets,” Bayer said.

The idea was first pitched a couple years ago, and gradually advanced through the hypothetical stages.

“Naturally, it appeals to people,” Bayer said, “but if adding just a little bit of showmanship, a little bit of pizzazz to adds a few fans to the crowd or some more members of the Dog Pound student section, we’ll take it.”

DeKALB – When Northern Illinois lost to Central Michigan in October, there was reason for concern among Huskies football fans.

The defeat was NIU’s first at Huskie Stadium since 2009. At that point, the Huskies did not control their own destiny in the Mid-American Conference West Division.

Thankfully for the Huskies, things have changed. Win this morning’s game at Western Michigan and the Huskies (9-2, 6-1 MAC) claim the division for the fifth straight season.

“For our senior class, this isn’t exactly new to us because we had to win every conference game after Central in 2011 to get the job done,” said NIU senior punter Tyler Wedel, who has become a nice weapon on special teams for the Huskies. “So I think that helps, having this class with this experience.”

The Central Michigan loss this season was NIU’s first MAC regular-season loss since the 2011 defeat in Mount Pleasant. NIU’s conference play this season has been more of a roller-coaster ride for than the past two seasons, with outcomes closer than the Huskies are accustomed to.

NIU senior safety Dechane Durante said the adversity the team has gone through has made the Huskies mentally tougher.

“The losses we took this year, especially the one in conference, definitely opened up our eyes a little bit more,” he said. “We haven’t clinched the West yet, so we have to win to go to the MAC Championship, so everybody is ready to get the win.”

Standing in the way is a dramatically improved Western Michigan team, led by a man NIU fans are familiar with – P.J. Fleck, the Kaneland graduate and former Huskies receiver and coach, who had a controversial one-day stint as the team’s offensive coordinator in the winter of 2012.

Hislop hails from the Woodrige-based Northern Ice Skating Club, whose brass are set to return to Fox Valley to co-host a national components camp from April 17 to 19.

The camp, booked at Fox Valley for at least the next two years, will offer training for up-and-coming skaters as well as tutelage from former national champions.

Later in 2015, the rink will host the first annual Dance Chicago Open, a competition headed by the Skating Council of Illinois that’s slated for July 23 to 26.

In getting outscored 34-17, outgained 474 yards to 269, losing the time of possession battle by 6:50 and losing the turnover battle, 2-1, the Bears permanently put to rest any hopes of a late-season run to mediocrity.

Yes, the Bears did jump out to a 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the second touchdown was practically a laydown after Jared Allen sacked and stripped Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and recovered the fumble himself at the Lions’ 5-yard line.

From that point on the Lions outscored the Bears 31-3 and completely dominated play.

After the Bears managed only 68 yards of offense in the first half last week against Tampa Bay, the Lions held the Bears to 118 first-half yards while putting up 286 yards of offense.

That’s the same Lions team whose coach, Jim Caldwell, said last week “had no comfort zone on offense,” and they “couldn’t find any rhythm running or throwing the football.”

Apparently all they needed was 60 minutes against the Bears.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush coach Marc Trestman had to offer was, “We just didn’t have enough to get the job done. I take the responsibility for that, as we couldn’t finish drives, had penalties again and dropped balls.”

It is commendable of Trestman to be accountable and try to put the blame on his own shoulders, but how many more times will we hear the same refrain?

Here is something that Trestman must shoulder the blame for. Matt Forte is easily the best player on the Bears right now, and Trestman called five running plays for him all day, four in the first half.

Including Ka’Deem Carey’s two rushes, the Bears called 20 passes and six running plays in the first half and one running play and 28 passes in the second half.

That’s 48 passes and seven runs on the day. No team can win in the NFL that way.

Yes, the Lions have the top run defense in the NFL, but they were allowing 70 rushing yards a game coming into Thursday, enough to force their defense to play honest.

The Lions didn’t have to make the Bears one-dimensional, Trestman did that for them, and in the process he turned his best weapon, Forte, into a blocking back and took him out of the game.

The Bears’ run defense

has been much improved this year, ranking 12h in the league going into the Lions game, and the Lions came in struggling horribly on the ground, ranking 30th in the NFL. But rather than quit on his ground game Caldwell gave the ball to Joique Bell 23 times. Although most if his early runs were for 2 or fewer yards, it kept the Bears’ defense honest, opening up passing lanes all over the field.

Eventually, Bell popped one for 22 yards, and he finished with 91 yards on 23 carries, a 4-yard average.

If refusing to run the football was Trestman’s game plan, then it’s time to find someone else to make the game plan, and if it wasn’t the plan, you have to question Trestman’s ability to manage a game.

Sure, the Bears’ defense was terrible against the Lions, too, but that’s because they just don’t have enough good players right now, and that’s on the front office, not the coach.

But if your quarterback deserves to be the highest paid player at his position in the league and your running back, both your wide receivers and your right guard are all Pro Bowlers, which they were the last time the game was played, there is no excuse for your offense and team to be as bad as they are.

Something has to change.

Mooseheart school receives grant for reading program KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com MOOSEHEART – The Reading Comprehension Program at Mooseheart School has been awarded a grant from Target Corp. for its “Magic Tree House Reading Program.”

The $2,000 grant will be used to purchase Magic Tree House books and other supplies to help students improve their background knowledge vocabulary, inferential skills and analysis of text structure, according to a news release.

More than 150 Magic Tree House books have been distributed to the Mooseheart residence homes. The family teachers in the homes have worked with a Target reading specialist on coordinated instruction with the books. Many of Mooseheart’s residence family teachers expressed that students would be excited to hear the books read aloud, adding that preparing and participating in the culminating event with costumes –

while performing parts of the books – would fit perfectly with many of their students, states a news release.

“At Target, we are committed to serving local communities where we do business,” said Laysha Ward, Target’s president of community relations, in the release. “That’s why we are proud to partner with Mooseheart as we work to strengthen communities and enrich the lives of our guests and team members.”

The grant is part of Target’s ongoing efforts to build strong, safe and healthy communities across the country, the release states.

Mooseheart’s primary student population includes children who have learning gaps of one year or more in one or more subjects, and some with learning disabilities. Mooseheart provides an environment and space to meet the needs of these disadvantaged children so that opportunities for education can be maximized, according to the release.

Church auction raises $5,000 for local organizations KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva raised more than $5,000 for local humanitarian organizations at its “Saturday Night Feverish” auction on Nov. 15.

More than 100 people packed the church’s historic sanctuary to bid on a variety of items, including baskets of donated goods and services from local businesses and church members. Funds

raised are being divided equally between Lazarus House, a shelter for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in St. Charles, and Mutual Ground, a shelter for domestic abuse victims in Aurora, according to a news release.

Local businesses that donated items include Cocoa Bean, Graham’s Chocolate, Forever Yogurt, Kimmer’s Ice Cream, McNally’s Irish Pub, Town House Books and La ZaZa’s Trattoria.

“It was wonderful to work with generous local merchants and a congregation that knows how to put the fun in fundraising,” said church member and auction organizer Jean Pierce in the release.

“The money we raised will go a long way toward helping our neighbors in need.”

Botox used cosmetically is harmless and effective Dear Doctor K: Can you explain how Botox reduces lines and wrinkles?

Dear Reader: “Botox” is short for “botulinum toxin.” Botulinum toxin injections were first used for cosmetic purposes in the late 1980s. Since then, this therapy has gained quite a following. In 2012, these injections were the leading nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in the United States among men and women in nearly all age groups.

Why is this treatment for wrinkles and frown lines so popular?

Botulinum toxin injections are quite effective at temporarily smoothing a wrinkled face, brow or neck. Over time, they slow the formation of deeper, more permanent facial lines. They are relatively affordable; they have very few risks; and they require no recovery time.

Wrinkles and frown lines are caused, in part, by the tug of muscles beneath the skin. The tug causes smooth skin to form wrinkles and creases. Botox relaxes the muscles that are tugging on the skin.

Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by bacteria. If you ingest these bacteria in improperly preserved foods, or if they infect a wound, they can cause botulism.

muscle-relaxing, wrinkle-reducing results usually last for about three or four months.

Many people worry that botulinum toxin injections will leave them with an unnatural expression or with frozen features. But when done well, these injections shouldn’t drastically change your ability to form facial expressions.

In rare cases, injections near the upper eyelids or eyebrows may make them droop temporarily. But side effects are typically uncommon and minimal.

Following its introduction for cosmetic purposes, Botox also is being used to treat a growing number of medical conditions. All of these conditions involve muscle tension that can be relieved by Botox. Dr. Wallace: I am responding to a mother

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace who didn’t know how to help her daughter who had anorexia but refused to go in for treatment. Very often a person with an eating disorder denies that a problem exists. They may fool themselves, but they cannot fool everyone. Sometimes they must be forced into treatment, which may mean keeping them in a locked ward and force-feeding them to prevent death.

My husband and I forced our 15-year-old anorexic daughter into treatment. It was a real strain on the family, and the entire family went through a lot of counseling. It was a long road back for her, but it was well worth the effort.

She is now a high school senior and is planning to enter the field of medicine after college. I know that she is thankful for our intervention and realizes that, after all, it was a matter of life and death!

South starts with only 10 tricks: four spades, two hearts, three diamonds and one club. The best line is to take two club ruffs in the South hand to get the spade-trick total up to six.

Here, with spades 3-2, it does not matter where declarer wins the first trick, but just in case trumps are 4-1, he should take it with his heart king and lead the club king.

Suppose that East wins with his ace and returns a heart. South takes that with dummy’s ace, cashes the club queen, ruffs a club high, leads the spade four to dummy’s eight, ruffs the last club, overtakes his remaining spade with dummy’s ace, draws trumps and claims.
