Man charged in St. Charles robbery KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – An Elgin man has been charged in connection with an armed robbery that took place at Subway in St. Charles earlier this month, police officials announced Wednesday.

Rodney W. Boyette, 50, was charged with aggravated robbery and indicating he was armed with a firearm, a Class 1 felony; robbery, a Class 2 felony; and theft of less than $500, a Class A misdemeanor,

according to a news release from the St. Charles Police Department.

On Nov. 3, police responded to Subway in the 500 block of South Randall Road at 5:25 p.m. for a report of a male who entered the restaurant, demanded mone y f r o m t h e Rodney W. r e g i s t e r a n d Boyette implied he had a gun. The subject then fled on foot with an undetermined

Four cited in tobacco compliance checks KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Four St. Charles businesses were cited for failing tobacco compliance checks last week.

The St. Charles Police Department issued the violations in its first round of tobacco compliance checks for the 2013-14 grant year, and checks were conducted Nov. 21, according to a news release.

A total of 34 businesses were checked, and those cited include BP Gas, 1660 W. Main St.; BP Gas, 1505 Lincoln Highway; Franks Shoe Shine, 1405 N. Fifth Ave. and LaVita Cigar Inc., 2015 Dean St, according to police.

Police conducted the compliance checks with the help of a 17-year-old male and a 17-year-old female and one male civilian special agent.

Businesses were inspected for required signage, and the presence of synthetic tobacco or bath-salt products.

The Nov. 21 inspections were the first of three to be completed in the 2013-14 State Funded Tobacco Grant period.

During the last grant period, a total of 108 businesses were inspected, and four were cited.

Boyette was located by police following an incident on Nov. 7, when he entered a Carpentersville business, implied he had a weapon, demanded

cash and then fled, police said. A witness provided police with the suspect’s vehicle information, and Boyette was subsequently tracked down and located a short time later by an Algonquin police officer, states the news release.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized a warrant for Boyette’s arrest Tuesday.

Boyette was taken into custody and was transferred to the Kane County Jail, where he is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

Police still seeking leads to find missing Geneva man

Talley last was seen at about 6 p.m.

Nov. 10 at Remington Boulevard and Veterans P a r k w a y i n Jeffrey Bolingbrook Talley after being released from Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, according to the city.

“At this time, he has not returned and we have fol-

lowed up on all the leads we had,” Geneva Police Cmdr.

Julie Nash said in an email.

“Though there are no indications of foul play, we have to investigate it thoroughly. That is all the information we have at this time.”

Talley is described as white, 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 150 pounds with a thin build, brown hair, blue eyes and a brown stud earring in his left ear.

He was wearing a tan or blue sweatshirt, blue jeans and might be carrying a red backpack.

Those with information regarding his whereabouts are asked to call the Geneva police at 630-232-4736.

Both involve damage to the central portion of the retina (macula), which is responsible for sharp, central vision. AMD may affect one or both eyes and usually presents no early warning signs. Symptoms (haziness, grayness, waviness of straight lines, a blank spot in central vision) associated with dry AMD usually develop gradually, while wet AMD symptoms may arise quickly, within days or weeks. It is important to know that, while AMD cannot be cured, its progression may be slowed. Regular exams are essential. P.S. (Bi-)monthly injections of drugs that inhibit the growth of abnormal blood cells can stop further vision loss in nearly all patients with wet AMD and can recover some vision function in about one-third.

‘Every day is Thanksgiving’ Toddler’s battle with cancer doesn’t dim family’s holiday spirit

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE TOWNSHIP – Aiden Becker is an active toddler who loves cars and trucks – anything that goes vrrroom! – and his favorite movie is “Cars.”

He also loves closing doors.

When his grandparents and legal guardians, Larry and Kathy Becker of Sugar Grove Township, took him to the Sugar Grove Fire Department, he noticed all the fire trucks’ doors were open.

“It’s his hobby,” Kathy Becker said. “He was off to shut all the trucks’ doors.

‘Good thing I was there – they left all the doors open.’ ” The way he was running around recently – squealing with joy and throwing a ball for Ari the cat – you’d never know he just finished two doses of chemotherapy.

Aiden, 2, was diagnosed March 15 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia – a form of blood cancer that occurs when the bone marrow makes too many immature lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. He has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

“He’s a little trooper,” Kathy Becker said. “He’s a bouncy little guy, a doll, adorable. Even when he’s wearing a mask, he smiles all through his eyes. ... When we ask for a ‘traffic view room’ at Lurie, they know Aiden’s coming.

He’s always in the window, watching traffic.”

Aiden has lived with the Beckers all his life. As Aiden’s parents are in transition, the Beckers became his legal guardians this year.

“They realize right now, the best thing for the baby is being with us,” Kathy Becker said.

The Beckers said they are thankful for so many things this Thanksgiving: For Aiden, for a good diagnosis, good doctors, good treatment and good prognosis.

“This is more curable and especially in children, it has a high cure rate of 85 percent,” said Kathy Becker of Aiden’s particular type of leukemia.

“He’s responding really well to therapy.”

Larry Becker is a cancer survivor himself, having licked Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, 26 years ago.

“I’m thankful for Aiden,” Larry Becker said. “And I’m just thankful to be here still – and to be a part of his life.”

••• Aiden was diagnosed when he kept spiking to a 102-degree fever, even after a round of antibiotics for an ear infection, Kathy Becker said.

“The ear infection was gone ... but he was getting little spots like a weird rash,” she said. “It was petechiae.”

Petechiae are flat, pinpoint, dark-red spots under the skin caused by bleeding, one of several symptoms of Aiden’s type of blood cancer.

Aiden’s medical bills have passed the $700,000 mark, with most covered by insurance and the charity care he qualifies for while still on his father’s insurance. But he will go on the Beckers’ insurance Jan. 1, ending the charity care, Kathy Becker said.

for any of that,” she said.

The Beckers borrowed about $30,000 against their house and both cars to pay the current medical costs not covered by insurance.

In the new year, their copays and deductibles will increase as Aiden faces continued chemo treatments through April, and they have no idea how much more expensive it will be, Kathy Becker said.

Even the costs of traveling to Lurie is daunting. Kathy Becker said they have paid hundreds of dollars in parking fees alone.

Band to host fundraiser for Aiden Becker in Geneva • THANKSGIVING Continued from page 4 Band member Dan Becker – Larry’s brother – suggested the fundraising event, and the rest of the band agreed to help out.

“He’s got no hair – but he still smiles.” Dan Becker said of Aiden, his grandnephew. “His personality shows through.”

Band member Dan Ryan of Blackberry Township said the group will play at the Claddagh, every second Sunday, for the Irish New Year and St. Patrick’s Day, so it was a natural to set up the fundraising effort there.

Several bands will perform, and items will be offered for silent auction prizes to raise money, he said.

As news of the fundraiser circulated through social media and various contacts, more bands have signed up, and additional items have been donated for prizes as well, Ryan said.

Any and all help is being accepted, he said.

“We intend to auction the band, too,” Ryan said. “We will give somebody an hour of our acoustic performance – any day except holidays and not in March.”

Kathy Becker said they are thankful for the band agreeing to host the fundraiser.

“This is just fantastic,” she said. “People have been very, very good to us. We are also so very humbled and appreciative of the compassion shown to us by friends, coworkers and acquaintances, but also by total strangers.”

All the money raised by the fundraiser or from direct donations will go into the Aiden Becker Trust Fund, Chase Bank, 489 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove IL 60554.

Kathy Becker said that money is to help Aiden with his illness. If all the money does not get used, what is left will be donated to various organizations that fight cancer or help families who are dealing with childhood cancers, she said.

Aldermen debate future of community garden

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen are debating whether to continue to allow the Batavia Community Garden to operate on a vacant piece of land that is not currently on the tax rolls.

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting discussed the possible extension of an easement agreement until Dec. 31, 2017, so the garden – at the corner of Main and South Water streets in downtown Batavia – could continue. In April 2010, Batavia aldermen approved an easement agreement to get the garden started.

Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath told aldermen the produce from the garden has been given to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pan-

try.

Batavia Enterprises is a member of River Island Partnership, which owns the property the Batavia Community Garden sits on.

“The long-term goal is to locate a larger area in which to site not only the community garden, but smaller plots for individuals or families,” McGrath said.

While Batavia 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks said he appreciated the efforts of the Batavia Community Garden, he objected to the fact that the property is not on the tax rolls.

“It’s taking $5,000 away from the tax coffers,” Sparks said. “That piece of property should be on the tax rolls.”

Sparks said the land currently isn’t generating any taxes after generating $5,000 in taxes two years ago.

“I don’t want to see the

community garden die,” he said. “But I don’t want to be approving a community garden to take money off the tax bills.”

Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit said he supported Sparks’ sentiment.

“But we have bigger fish to fry,” Chanzit said. “I see the Batavia Community Garden as a vibrant act of volunteerism.”

Sixth Ward Alderman Nicholas Cerone said he would like to see some sort of deal worked out.

“The community garden would love to move and we would like to see that land on the tax rolls,” Cerone said.

“It is a timing issue. Let’s not push them. Let us support their decision to grow.”

McGrath said he plans to talk to Batavia Enterprises officials more about the issue.

allow for a graduated or progressive income tax instead of the state’s flat income tax rate.

“We have a revenue problem in Illinois,” Malay said.

“If we can have a fair tax instead of a flat tax ... We have been giving tax breaks to companies and individuals for too long.”

Malay said he is part of an effort with A Better Illinois, a coalition of businesses and labor associations, to get signatures to put the question of a constitutional amendment on the March 18 primary ballot.

“We are looking to have a system like Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin – they have a graduated income tax,” Malay said. “We need to do that. If we mirrored Iowa, we would be raising $6 billion more a year.”

Kaneland School Board President Cheryl Krauspe said she agrees with the association and Malay’s assessment of the state’s needs.

“I do believe it’s wrong to try to correct the debt prob-

lem on the backs of Illinois teachers and on the backs of local taxpayers,” Krauspe said.

Opinions differ among local legislators.

“Illinois gets revenue from property tax, sales tax and income tax,” Chapa LaVia said. “Money coming in is very narrow compared to money going out. Every department is overworked and overloaded. There are fewer and fewer dollars being spent on the least amount of state workers ... in state prisons, IDOT [Illinois Department of Transportation], state police, caseworkers, [that] we’re doing a disservice to our constituents.”

Fortner said shifting school pensions locally is not part of next week’s reform issue, but likely will come up in other discussions.

“A cost shift is a big concern, because simply moving it to the local school districts in this area is probably just moving it on to our property tax bills,” Fortner said.

But Fortner said he did not think a progressive income tax would solve the state’s fiscal problems.

“I’m against it because I don’t think it does what pro-

ponents think it does. Because, in general, I have not seen a full set of numbers,” Fortner said.

Iowa, for example, has lower property tax rates than Illinois, Fortner said.

His concern would be an increased income tax on his constituents, along with high property taxes for school funding.

“I’ve looked at the progressive [income] tax, and I think [that] by itself, it does not address these structural problems,” Fortner said. “We have the highest property tax burden in the state in terms of school funding.”

McConnaughay said she would not support more money for the state until lawmakers manage the money they already are given.

“Why on Earth would any taxpayer in the state of Illinois trust the state of Illinois governor and legislature with another dime when we have repeatedly demonstrated that we cannot manage the tax dollars we are given responsibly?” McConnaughay said. “If they increase taxes, it’s not going to be spent where they say it’s going to be spent.”

Local school officials have fretted that the state will shift its teacher pension burdens to their districts, and the Illinois Association of School Boards issued a statement that it would be against such a move.

In a statement, the association reported that representatives of more than 390 school districts supported a resolution against such a move at its annual conference in Chicago last week.

According to the resolution, the state’s pension problem “can only be truly solved by addressing the state’s failure to meet its financial obligations and adhere to actuarial principles when expanding pension benefits.”

Batavia Education Association President Tony Malay agreed.

“Shifting the cost is pushing off their responsibility,” Malay said, as state lawmakers are expected to vote Tuesday on a pension reform package.

Village to test phone emergency alert system KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The village of North Aurora on Dec. 3 will conduct a test of its new Nixle 360 emergency notification system.

The test will consist of an automated phone call to all listed and unlisted landline telephone lines in the village beginning at 9 a.m. that day.

The message will begin with an introduction by Village President Dale Berman, followed by the test message.

The Nixle 360 system is an Internet-based emergency notification system that combines phone calls, emails and text messages to reach residents and subscribers. The system replaces the village’s reverse 911 system, a hardware-based phone call system

that was purchased in 2007 and has become outdated.

The new system will be used by all village departments to notify residents and subscribers of urgent or emergency information.

Once the new system is operational, the village will share with residents how to register to receive emails as well as calls and text messages on their cellphones.

Man charged with domestic battery

According to reports, Stewart J. Stoffregen, of the 100 block of Logan Avenue, was in

The committee approved an amendment for the coroner’s office budget, which will add about $88,000 to the fiscal 2013 budget to cover autopsies, toxicology expenses, overtime and fuel costs.

Additional funds are for 2013 coroner’s budget years. The coroner’s budget in 2012 was $757,000, and officials in that office argued that the department was underfunded by the previous administration, Lauzen said.

Starting in 2014, the coroner’s budget still would be locked in at $843,000 for the next three years, but Kane County Coroner Rob Russell’s office overspent a little more than $88,000 this year, Lauzen said.

Approximately 2,400 runners have registered for the open road race, which will be from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. The race will feature a 1-mile run that starts at 7:30 a.m. and an adult 4-mile run that starts at 8:15 a.m.

Runners will start at Houston Street/Island Avenue and will run west across

North Batavia Avenue (Route 31). Batavia police officers will stop vehicle traffic intermittently to allow runners safe passage across the intersection of Route 31 and Houston Street.

Motorists should expect increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the downtown business district during the event, and they are advised to use caution.

Runners will continue into the residential areas of the northeast quadrant of the city, which includes crossing McKee Street and North Van Nortwick Avenue.

OPINIONS A drumstick to pick with Thanksgiving A deranged creature staggered out of my bedroom 365 days ago with a pair of extra elastic sweatpants and a fair amount of regret. Fumbling down the stairs, he waddled to the medicine cupboard and pulled out an assortment of different pain relievers, along with three chalky Tums. This creature was a loser; and I was this shamed creature.

Thanksgiving Day – the annual battle between humanity and the ruthless race of squawkers known as the turkeys. For the past few years, my turkey has held the high ground behind bunkers of mashed potatoes surrounded by a thick moat of molten gravy. Hurling chunks of saturated stuffing at my weakened stomach,

Each year, I penguin-shuffle away from the table battleground in a bout of intestinal-distressed defeat.

The turkey had destroyed me, and I failed to destroy the whole turkey. No longer will I tolerate a loss in this delectable squabble. This year, I shall waft the fumes of victory. This year, the turkey shall know the wrath of Kurt the Carnivore.

The art of eating is rather complicated and involves years of training. Before

entering into a tussle with a turkey, one must know his or her succulent foe thoroughly.

A disciplined eye can spot a turkey 10 feet out, lurking between the green peas and golden biscuits. Masters of cunning and deception, one well-skilled turkey can easily lure a family of unsuspecting gluttons into a chow coma.

For any foodie attempting to fend off these feather fiends, I recommend the proper attire.

A hefty wool sweater capable of catching scattered food remnants is key.

Continuing with the fashion theme, cargo pants stocked with Alka-Seltzers come in handy for emergencies. Heavy cranberry sauce on the cheeks makes for a fine war paint as well.

As for tools, I’d go with a large and fueled chainsaw.

If the roaring carnage of a chainsaw in a house full of one’s relatives seems a bit peculiar (don’t see how it could), a standard-issue, three-pronged fork also will work.

Various methods exist on how to take a turkey down.

Some like the brute force approach – a technique based on total tasty annihilation.

Though it may seem effective at first, the turkey will keep sending waves of unrelenting tender morsels until their opponent succumbs to the flavor invasion. I prefer to employ stealth at the dinner table.

Smothering my finest collared shirt in gravy and acting half asleep, I lull the

turkey into a false sense of security by making it think I have been subdued. Once the delicious demon thinks it has won, I spring into action.

Of course, the turkeys adapt. Every Thanksgiving, they grow smarter and trickier. Ladies and gentlemen, batten down the plates and prepare the forks. The only good turkey is a gobbled turkey.

Don’t throw your menurkey at me. I’m aware that this year’s exact scenario – in which the first day of Hanukkah falls on Thanksgiving – may not happen for another 77,030 years. Or 77,798 years.

Or possibly ever.

But know that Thanksgivukkah was manufactured – not to mention trademarked and kickstarted and buzzfed.

It can be reproduced. Manischewitz, maker of the

sweet Kosher wine that fuels Passover seders, dedicated somewhere in the range of $3 million to making this holiday happen. Jews nationwide have cooperated, refraining from putting too much emphasis on the fact that Hanukkah actually started Wednesday night. The first night of Hanukkah will overlap with Thanksgiving in 2070, which really isn’t quite so far away.

Through publicity and perseverance and a whole lot of recipes for challah stuffing, Thanksgivukkah officially is taking place on Thursday.

Pomodoro E Mozzarella delivers authentic Italian

Owners Rosalia and Giuseppe Imperiale opened the new restaurant in St. Charles on Oct. 3. They make everything to order from scratch using old family recipes, and they import their flour and tomatoes straight from Italy. The restaurant’s name, Pomodoro E Mozzarella, is Italian for tomato and cheese.

The recipes are simple and healthy, the owners said.

“We use no chemicals – just water, salt and yeast,” said Giuseppe Imperiale about the artisan pizza dough, which is made fresh every day. “There are no additives. It’s all about temperature.”

He said the artisan pizzas are one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. When he makes a Margherita artisan pizza, Giuseppe Imperiale stretches the pizza dough by hand before adding homemade pizza sauce.

Then he uses fresh mozzarella – not the shredded kind, at least not for the artisan Margherita – and tops it with some fresh basil leaves. He drizzles the dough with extra virgin olive oil near the crust before running it through the oven. Within four or five minutes, the pizza is ready to serve.

“We call it an Italian-style wood burning oven without the scent of smoke,” Giuseppe Imperiale said.

Pomodoro E Mozzarella serves six types of artisan-style pizzas, including the Ai Spinaci – sautéed spinach with fresh roasted sausage, garlic and fresh mozzarella.

One “bianca” dish is the Pizza Cruda, which is made with fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato, garlic, arugula and olive oil.

Both Rosalia and Giuseppe Imperiale were born in Italy, and the restaurant is very much a family business. Rosalia Imperiale’s 82-year-old mother, Cristina, helps out, as does the Imperiales’ 15-year-old son, Francesco.

“We’re a close-knit family,” said Rosalia Imperiale. “Our recipes – we grew up with this stuff. We grew up with food.”

Giuseppe Imperiale said in addition to the fresh calamari appetizers, the Arancini Rice Balls, which are fried rice balls filled with ground beef, peas and mozzarella, have been popular dishes. The menu also offers soups, two types of homemade bruschetta – one with arugula and shaved Parmesan, and another with diced tomatoes, spices, fresh herbs, garlic, onions and evo – along with American-style pizzas, salads, seafood, chicken and a long list of panini sandwiches served hot or cold.

John Tesh to perform with band in St. Charles

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com With six music Emmys under his belt and a radio show that attracts more than 14 million listeners a week, John Tesh is a man of many talents.

Tesh will bring his Big Band ChristJohn Tesh mas Live! show Monday, Dec. 16, to the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The show starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are available at 630-962-7000 or www.oshows. com.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Tesh about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: Of course, you are coming to St. Charles as part of your Big Band Christmas Live! show. Is this show kind of a continuation of the release of your album, “Big Band,” last year?

John Tesh: Yeah. We’re hoping that it will become a tradition. It’s a fun band.

There’s a lot of guys from Los Angeles, and we’re actually going to pick up five players there locally.

ES: And so these are all going to be Christmas songs, I presume?

JT: Well, I would say 80 percent Christmas, but we always like to throw in some of the standards, like “Beyond The Sea,” stuff like that.

ES: What drew you to want to do big band music? I know your dad listened to it while stationed in the Pacific in World War II. JT: This is really the music I listened to when I was a kid growing up. And so it was always in the house.

I mostly played trumpet when I was a kid. I didn’t start playing piano until a

little bit later.

So, it’s a big part of my roots. It’s stuff that I have been living with most of my life and people love it because the lyrics are really quaint and right to the point.

ES: Will you be playing “Roundball Rock” that evening?

JT: You know, I had a tour manager who was like, don’t play that song because it’s not a Christmas song. But we get enough tweets and Facebook posts about it, that we pretty much have to play it.

Maybe we’ll come up with a Christmas arrangement for it.

ES: “Roundball Rock” is considered to be the best sports theme of all time, and was used for the program “The NBA on NBC.” What was your idea for the song in the first place?

JT: It was a combination of trying to find a catchy theme, but also, recording it at a tempo that I knew would work for them and then making sure at the beginning of the song there is some sort of fanfare.

There was creativity, but there was a little science involved too, I think.

ES: Would you consider it the best sports theme of all time?

JT: I don’t think it is the best sports theme, but I appreciate the compliment.

There’s a song called “Heavy Action” that’s the “Monday Night Football” theme.

That’s my favorite sports theme.

I love that theme.

ES: Did “Roundball Rock” come to you easily?

JT: It did. It probably did because I wasn’t around a keyboard at the time, and that made it work.

Sometimes the melodies that come into your head are stronger if you don’t have an instrument in front of you.

‘Nuncrackers’ good for laughs

Since the original debuted in 1985, the show has spawned six sequels, including “Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical” now drawing laughs at Steel Beam Theatre.

No matter what their religious affiliation, audiences can’t help themselves from responding to the antics of the fun-loving sisters of Mount Saint Helen – bad puns, nutty sight gags and familiar shticks notwithstanding.

In this rendition, directed and choreographed by Kevin Wiczer with music direction

by Donna Steele, five nuns – along with half a dozen of their most talented schoolchildren – gather in the convent basement to tape a special holiday revue for public-access TV. Wiczer has assembled a smart, finely-tuned cast that works well as an ensemble.

traditional carols as well as spoofs (“Here We Come-a-Waffling” and “Twelve Days Prior to Christmas”); audience participation (anyone for bingo?); and a hilarious send-up of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet, “The Nutcracker.”

April M. Martinez, who appeared in the company’s previous production of “Nunsense II: The Second Coming,” plays the irreverent Reverend Mother Mary Regina who fights a losing battle to keep the broadcast from getting sidetracked. She does a bang-up job with the lively “A Carnival Christmas” in Act I.

Other performers include Nancy Kolton as Sister Robert Anne; Pascale M. Trouillot as Sister Mary Hubert; Sarah Smith as the hapless Sister Mary Paul (a.k.a.

Amnesia) and JZ Zaeske, as Sister Mary Leo, a wannabe prima ballerina.

Terry Christianson, as Father Virgil, demonstrated his singing ability with a nuanced ballad (“The Christmas Box”) and comedic prowess as he gets pressed into service impersonating the missing cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, in a daffy culinary demonstration.

But the frosting on this tasty holiday confection was provided by the enthusiastic youngsters whose intermittent appearances to sing and dance further enlivened the show. Two sets of participants appear in rotation. On hand for opening night were Molly Babczak, Madison Brown, Lizzie Plambeck, Sami Sima, Sydney Poss and Devin Wise.

Krage hammers away for North Stars Northern Illinois-bound outside hitter leads SCN to co-conference title

That Krage often could be spotted holding her 1-yearold cousin on the court after North girls volleyball matches supports that claim.

A Northern Illinois recruit and the Kane County Chronicle Girls Volleyball Player of the Year, Krage still is deliberating whether to major in elementary or early childhood education. Until she decides, those associated with her could gladly rave about her athleticism, prompting Krage, once again, to blush.

“She’s never been boastful. She’s never been a cocky player,” North setter Sydney Wohlert said. “She’s always been a player who could crush the ball, but then she’ll look and be like, ‘Oh, OK.’ ” Krage contributed 322 kills, 237 digs and 28 aces to a North team that won three tournaments, shared the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title with St. Charles East and advanced to the Class 4A Geneva Sectional final.

A three-year starter, the outside hitter noticeably developed throughout her career, gaining savvy to go with the skill packaged in her 6-foot-1 frame.

“Even if the block was all over her, she was so smart to find the floor in other ways,” Wohlert said. “She could tip, she could go to the back line, she could cut it. It was just amazing the things she could do.”

well before the three Krages she would later coach entered high school, Hawkins has watched Taylor Krage excel and rarely let up. Three days after North’s season ended with a sectional final loss to Geneva, Krage made the familiar drive to Marengo for her final tryouts with Club Fusion.

“I think of this as it’s been

this great journey with her,” Hawkins said. “I’m very sad that it’s over, but I know on one hand that it’s not really over. I’ll always be her biggest fan.”

Krage scored 10, 13, six and nine kills in North’s postseason matches. The small window between the end of the high school season and beginning of club workouts at first kept her from reflecting on the end of her prep career.

Lately, however, the extra windshield time on drives to and from Marengo has steered her to pondering her career and what lies ahead

at NIU, which she selected in part for its proximity to family.

“Day-to-day, it’s just like everything else in your life: You don’t even realize it,” Krage said. “But then I look back and think of little 11-year-old-Taylor starting with volleyball. You don’t see it then, but when you look back, leaps and bounds I improved without even realizing it.”

She remains optimistic that more good things are yet to come in college. Her teammates and coaches feel just as strongly.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Counting to 10 comes far easier than tallying the number of times St. Francis girls volleyball coach Peg Kopec has treated her unprecedented success with self-deprecation.

The winningest coach in IHSA history – victory No. 1,159, a 25-19, 25-7 sweep of La Salle-Peru, netted the Spartans a repeat Class 3A title earlier this month – now boasts 10 state championships overall.

Right, coach? Ten? “Things kind of run together, you know,” Kopec grinned.

“Especially, when you’re older.”

And with that, here’s another accolade to accumulate: Kane County Chronicle Girls

Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Kopec guided St. Francis to a 39-3 record in 2013 while navigating the stretch run without Nebraska-bound senior outside hitter Maddie Peg Kopec Haggerty (torn labrum), the highest-profile player among four to suffer season-ending injuries.

Each of the Spartans’ losses came to eventual Class 4A state champion Mother McAuley, which itself lost just twice, both times to Kentucky teams in tournament play.

St. Francis didn’t venture quite as far south as The Bluegrass State during the postseason, but a draw that took the team to Coal City (section-

al) and Joliet Catholic (supersectional) surely looked like a leisure trip. The Spartans swept both sectional matches and the supersectional by an average margin of victory of 10 points.

Montini took the first game from St. Francis in the Timothy Christian Regional final, but the Spartans cruised after that. Senior libero Sam Dubiel, a Florida recruit, and sophomore outside hitter Molly Haggerty – the third of her sisters to commit to Nebraska – led the charge.

“Just moved some people around, but same old suspects,” Kopec said. “Except for Laney.”

Promoting freshman Laney Malloy shortly after Molly Haggerty’s early-October injury represented a relative change of pace for Kopec.

Ultimately, Malloy’s 6-foot1 stature – two inches taller than twin sister Kamryn, who spent the entire season with the varsity – added up.

“Laney being a freshman, I wouldn’t normally turn to that person, but she had a potential blocking component that we’re looking for,” Kopec said.

The Malloys were one of two sets of siblings on the 2013 team. Several others had older sisters to win titles alongside Kopec.

Since taking the reins of the program in 1974 – at 4-6, her only sub-.500 season – Kopec has welcomed nine former players as assistant coaches.

She would rather keep track of those familial figures than wins and titles. Regardless, the totals only figure to grow across the board.

2013 KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ALL-AREA TEAM FIRST TEAM Molly Haggerty, St. Francis, So., OH Nebraska recruit provided the Spartans with plenty of oomph during their run to a second consecutive Class 3A state title, especially after older sister Maddie (torn labrum) suffered a season-ending injury. Finished with a team-best 341 kills, including 18 in a title-match sweep of La Salle-Peru.

Carly Jimenez, St. Charles East, Sr., S One of the known commodities on a Saints team that saw a handful of players emerge, the High Point (N.C.)-bound Jimenez contributed 770 assists, 261 digs and 91 kills to a 31-win season.

Stars to a breakout season that included a share of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title and the 4A South Elgin Regional crown, delivering 322 kills and 237 digs. Headed to Northern Illinois.

Grace Loberg, Geneva, Fr., OH Helped power Vikings to the first sectional title in program history in a smashing debut, providing 312 kills and 179 digs during a 29-10 season. Coach KC Johnsen marveled at Loberg’s upside throughout.

Heather Meyer, Batavia, Sr., OH Three-year varsity player kept the Bulldogs in the UEC River Division hunt until late in the season, leading the team with 335 kills and ranking second with 310 digs.

BATAVIA – The Batavia football program has hunted for quality nonconference opponents in recent years.

Richards, though, fell into the Bulldogs’ lap.

“We got a lot of ‘Noes’ last year, like I do now,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said.

“When you’re winning, it’s hard to schedule games. Last year, after about the 20th ‘No,’ Oak Lawn Richards called us and said ‘We’ll play you, Batavia.’ That’s a red flag, ain’t it?

No one’s playing us, but they have no problem playing us?

“So we looked at the scores, saw the quality of their opponents, looked at what they’ve done and said, ‘Alright, we’ll do it.’ And then we started checking out the video and we were like ‘This kid’s a sophomore, this kid’s a junior – oh my goodness, what have we done?’ ” What the Bulldogs did, it turns out, is line up an eventual IHSA Class 6A finalist.

Richards beat Batavia, 31-25, in the Week 2 meeting at Bull-

against DuPage Valley Conference power Glenbard North.

Richards dampened the afterglow of that victory by ending the Bulldogs’ 20-game regular season winning streak, building a 31-13 lead and hanging on for the victory.

The regular season meeting between the programs adds quite the twist to Saturday’s state title game. It also set the tone for the remainder of Batavia’s season, quarterback Micah Coffey said.

“I stayed up texting to [running back Anthony Scaccia] late that night, just about how we were going to work for everything we got,” Coffey said. “We kind of realized that if we wanted to compete with a team that was that good, it’s going to take everything we’ve got. We can’t just expect to walk on the field and beat teams. So that kind of triggered in all of our minds that it was time for us to turn it up another notch and really take our game to the next level, and you can kind of see what happened the rest of the year.”

The North Stars’ 8-0 run to close out the first half – which happened in the last 43 seconds – gave North a 32-22 lead heading into halftime.

The Phoenix slowly whittled down North’s lead, eventually tying the game, 49-all, with 4:03 to go in the fourth quarter. But North (2-0) scored the next eight points over the next threeplus minutes to go up, 59-50.

The North Stars went 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final 1:30 to seal the win.

“We knew they were go-

ing to make a run; they made their run there and we answered,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “Against a team like that, screening and boxing out kind of levels the playing field. They were just shooting some shots up there and just crashing. I would say 80 percent of their points were off of offensive rebounds.”

Key for the Phoenix was Keith Mack, who scored six points over a two-minute span that helped North Lawndale tie the game at 49.

North’s late 8-0 run saw senior guard Alec Goetz take control, hitting a runner to give North a 51-49 lead. Goetz went 6 for 6 from the line in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter and had a key steal with North clinging to a 57-50 lead with 1:01 to go.

Goetz was quiet in the first half as the North Stars jumped out to a big lead on the back of 10 Jake Ludwig points. In the 8-0 run at the end of the first half, Jack Callaghan hit two 3-pointers in a span of 20 seconds

to push the North Stars to a 32-22 lead.

Goetz scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter while adding a pair of important steals.

“We didn’t really game plan that much; we just came out in a zone and executed it,” Goetz said. “We needed this, it was a good win. It was a little rough around the edges, but we scrapped at the end.”

Ludwig had 14 for North while Erik Miller scored nine of his 11 points in the first half.

Mack scored 16 points for North Lawndale.

North will return to tournament action Friday against Downers Grove South.

In the final game of the night, Schaumburg withstood a late rally from St. Charles East to claim a 65-60 win.

East held a 31-26 halftime lead, but Schaumburg’s Brendan Parker scored the Saxons’ first 11 points of the second half to help Schaumburg pull ahead, 39-34.

With 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter and East down 63-58, Dom Adduci looked to pull the Saints within three on a lay-in but the senior was called for a charge, fouling out of the game.

Parker missed a pair of free throws with 22 seconds to go that set up an Evan DiLeonardi lay-up to cut it to 63-60 with 14 seconds to go.

Schaumburg’s Marquis Woodard split a pair of freethrows with 11 seconds to go to make it a two possession game.

The Saints (1-1) continue to play without injured projected starters Cole Gentry and David Mason.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BATAVIA – The Kaneland boys basketball team rallied to beat Batavia, 81-74, in overtime on Wednesday at the Windmill City Classic.

The Knights trailed by 10 points to start the fourth quarter before gaining traction late, and tied the game on a Drew David 3-pointer with about 12 seconds left in regulation. The game was tied at 70 going into OT but the Knights took control in the extra session.

John Pruett scored 21 points and Ty Carlson added 13 points for the Knights (1-0).

Batavia, playing without football players including Micah Coffey, got 26 points in a dynamite debut from Coffey’s younger brother, Canaan, who led the Bulldogs (0-1) with 26 points.

Forward Chasen Peez added 19 points for the Bulldogs.

In the first game of the night, St. Francis defeated Engelwood, 64-59. The Spartans were led by double-doubles from Kilian Brown (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Adam Hart (17 points, 10 rebounds), while Jason Sullivan had 15 points on five 3-pointers.

West Chicago Tournament: Geneva erased a nine-point third quarter deficit, rallying past Lake Zurich, 52-47, to move to 2-1 at the season-opening tournament. Nate Navigato (16 points) Mike Landi (13 points off the bench) and Chris Parrilli (10) paced the

In other tournament action, Marmion fell to West Chicago, 80-68. Jake Esp led the Cadets (0-3) with 18 points.

You could tell he wasn’t feeling 100 percent, but he was able to grind through it.”

North’s only victory came from 106-pounder Kolbe O’Brien, who pinned Joe Ruffino in 1:45. It was the second fall in as many nights for the freshman.

“I think it’s starting out pretty well,” O’Brien said of his season. “[Ben Hummel] is a good coach. He works us hard.”

Hummel is in his first season directing the North program.

“I thought the kids went out and did their best, wrestled hard,” Hummel said.

“We’re just young. We’ve got a long ways to go.”

The North Stars (1-1) forfeited six matches, including every match above 152 pounds except one.

“In our upper weights, it’s something we’re going to have to deal with right now,” Hummel said. “We don’t have any seniors. We’re rebuilding and we’re not going to be able to fill those upper weight classes right now.”

Kaneland boys hoops rallies to overtime win over Batavia

ST. CHARLES – Wednesday night’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual wrestling meet between St. Charles North and St. Charles East produced few competitive matches, which shouldn’t be too surprising considering the North Stars are rebuilding under a new head coach and the Saints enter the season with high expectations.

East won seven of the eight contested matches on North’s home mat to roll to a 71-6 victory.

One of the wrestlers the Saints are counting on to perform at a high level this season is senior Isaiah Vela. The 138-pounder is ranked third in Class 3A by the Illinois Matmen website and he opened his 2013-14 campaign by pinning North’s Jake Chantos in 2 minutes, 50 second.

“The first match, you’ve always got to get the jitters out,” Vela said. “Overall, I thought I did pretty good. I thought the team did pretty good. We were looking strong,

and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

East also got pins from Anthony Rubino (113), Ryan Valesh (132), Jake Mende (145) and Blake Fialka (182).

“I thought we wrestled aggressive,” East coach Jason Potter said. “That’s kind of the way we want to start our year. We have some talented kids, but we need to make sure we go out and perform day in and day out. Our goal as a team is every time we go out on the mat that we are the most aggressive, most offensive team out on the mat. I think they did that tonight.”

The most entertaining match of the night came at 152 pounds. East’s Jason Weber built a 13-2 lead on Chad Reynolds, but Reynolds fought back with a reversal and a pair of near falls in the third period to pull within 13-10. Weber was finally able to get out of trouble with a reversal and hung on for a 17-10 decision.

The only other match that didn’t end with a pin was at 126. Austin Hrubec was an 8-3 victor for the Saints over Ray Rushing.

Can Bears’ defense stop Adrian Peterson?

For the most part, things have not gone well for the Minnesota Vikings since the Bears last saw them in Soldier Field the second week of the season.

But after all kinds of turmoil at the quarterback position because of injury and the surprising signing of Josh Freeman, who then failed miserably in his one start before suffering a concussion, the Vikings look an awful lot like the club the Bears barely got past in Week 2 with their 31-30 victory on a last-minute touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Martellus Bennett.

Christian Ponder appears to be firmly re-entrenched as the starting quarterback, and Adrian Peterson will be coming off one of his best games of the season in Green Bay, Wis., where the Vikings played the

Packers to a tie in overtime.

Most of the biggest questions in this matchup will be about the Bears’ mindset after the egg they laid Sunday in St. Louis, and whether they have any hope at all of slowing Peterson with the worst run defense in the NFL. Peterson rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries in five quarters of football, and while he hasn’t approached his 2012 heroics, he was still the NFL’s second-leading rusher with 997 total yards, a 4.4 average and 10 touchdowns.

Ponder has been a threat on the ground with 34 scrambles for 151 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s completing 64.5 percent of his passes for a 78.7 passer rating, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. While his passing numbers on the season don’t scare you, he did complete 21 of 30 throws for 233 yards and a 103.9 passer rating Sunday at Lambeau.

Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson have been up and down, but are reliable targets for Ponder when the

Vikings are playing well. Cordarrelle Patterson is a factor in the kick return game, but is still struggling to find himself as a receiver.

On defense, the Vikings have struggled all year. They are 30th in total defense, 14th against the run but 29th against the pass. They are 23rd in interception percentage and 26th rushing the quarterback.

On the defensive line, Jared Allen and Kevin Williams are former all pros who are both still capable of having big games, but don’t do it on a regular basis any longer. LeTroy Guion and Brian Robison still are starting as well, and this is the unit that helped key the Vikings playoff run in 2012, but they have all struggled this year.

Chad Greenway is still the guy you have to identify on Minnesota’s defense, and he’ll make plays all over the field, but Erin Henderson in the middle and Marvin Mitchell on the weak side are guys the Bears should be able to exploit.

Josh Robinson and Chris Cook are third- and second-round draft picks,

respectively, on the corners who are both athletic and fast enough but terribly inconsistent, which is why this team is 29th in pass defense.

The safeties, Jamarca Sanford and Andrew Sendejo, aren’t bad forcing the run, but do struggle in coverage.

At the end of the day for the Bears, this one comes down to what are they going to do about Peterson? After going off for a 140 on the ground in Week 9 against the Cowboys, Peterson had been held in check by the Redskins and Seahawks before exploding again in Green Bay. The unfortunate fact is if the Vikings climb on Peterson’s back, there is little the Bears will be able to do but get into a shootout.

The good news is that Josh McCown continues to flourish in coach Marc Trestman’s offense, and the Bears have a lot more weapons on offense than Minnesota, giving them an excellent chance to win by piling up points, which is exactly what happened the last time they got together.

Ah, Thanksgiving. Nothing beats spending time with loved ones, enjoying a fine feast … and getting a jump on your fantasy opponent! I’m not suggesting that Aunt Mildred’s discussions aren’t riveting, but it’s always fun to have players going on Thanksgiving.

A closer look at Thursday’s games will help you determine which players can help your team and those who are likely to be … turkeys (ouch).

Packers at Lions, 11:30 a.m.

This game not only features several intriguing fantasy matchups, it also is pivotal to the NFC North. The big

all other Cowboys’ receivers would seem to be afterthoughts at this point. Although the Raiders are respectable against the run – sticking with the idea that this will be a shootout – start DeMarco Murray and Dan Bailey.

The Cowboys actually have the weaker defense in this contest, ranking last in points and passing yards. Assuming Darren McFadden will be in street clothes, Rashard Jennings is a great play. If Denarius Moore returns, he is a solid play. If not, take a close look at Rod Streater.

Stafford should be productive against the Packers’ 18thranked defense. The Packers equally are mediocre versus the run and the pass, so start Reggie Bush.

Raiders at Cowboys, 3:30 p.m.

The late-afternoon game should be a bonanza for Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. The Raiders’ defense ranks No. 8 against the run, but a dismal No. 25 versus the pass. It would be a surprise if Romo didn’t crest 300 yards and throw at least two touchdown passes, probably more. Jason Witten also is a must start. Terrance Williams has disappeared, and

Two good, but not great, defenses face off in the night game. Ben Roethlisberger has averaged 22 fantasy points over the past four weeks.

with their running-back rotation, but Le’Veon Bell is clearly the best option. This week, he’s probably looking at 10 to 14 points. Antonio Brown is a top-five fantasy receiver and an obvious play. After Brown, it gets dicey. Jerricho Cotchery had emerged during weeks 9-11, but he went without a reception against the Browns.

After lighting up the Bears in week 11, Ray Rice reverted to his 2013 form against the Jets (16 carries for 30 yards).

Although the Jets are stout against the run, it’s time to look at Rice as a No. 3 fantasy back or flex option. In smaller leagues, he’s probably not worth a roster spot. After kicker Justin Tucker and receiver Torrey Smith, the Ravens do not offer much in this game.

Given his recent production, it’s hard to recommend Joe Flacco. Call it a gut instinct: He scores 20-plus points against Pittsburgh.

question, of course, is whether Aaron Rodgers will play. As of Monday morning, his status was uncertain. Matt Flynn came to the rescue last week against Minnesota, taking over for a struggling Scott Tolzien.

Obviously, the Packers are a stronger play if it’s Rodgers, but either quarterback should produce. Flynn seemed to have a connection with Jarrett Boykin, who hauled in five receptions and a touchdown in the second half. The Lions’ defense is ranked No. 28 against the pass. Boykin, James Jones and Jordy Nelson are solid starts. Kicker Mason Crosby also is in for a good day. It might be tougher for Eddie Lacy – Detroit is No. 4 against the run – but we still like the talented rookie this week.

The Lions are among the league’s dumbest teams.

They also are one of the most talented. Calvin Johnson is an obvious start and Matthew

Like Lake Forest, Richards is known for a beastly defense, of which the Bulldogs have first-hand knowledge. Batavia also was burned by Richards’ big-play ability, with three of Richards’ TDs coming from 49 yards out or farther.

“I think mainly just schemewise, what we can and can’t do, that’s the most important part,” Batavia linebacker Anthony Thielk said.

“We just know there are certain things we did last time against them that obviously we can’t do this time because obviously they had a lot of big plays. We think we’ve put some stuff in to capitalize and make big plays ourselves and stop them from having those big plays.”

By JOHN DEFORE Special to The Washington Post You’re in Rome, at the kind of party you’ve only ever imagined. The young and gorgeous mix with aging aristocrats on a terrace overlooking the Coliseum. These are the sort of people who can make line dancing look sophisticated, which is what they’re doing when a white-haired gentleman steps out of formation and turns to you. The action slows down as he gazes, lights a cigarette and muses in voice-over about the things a great writer notices.

So begins “The Great Beauty,” a film more ravishingly Fellini-esque than many of Federico Fellini’s own movies. Director Paolo Sorrentino doesn’t simply mimic the master’s style and preoccupations, which anyone could do, but conjures the kind of emotions that made “La Dolce Vita,” “8 1/2” and others endure. He collects scenes of superficial extravagance and eccentricity, then finds the deeper yearnings they conceal.

The writer in that opening scene, Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo), could almost be an older version of the Marcello Mastroianni character in “Dolce Vita.”

Having published one very successful novel 40 years ago, Jep became “King of the High Life” and never penned another, instead doing just enough journalistic work to keep him in contact with everyone worth knowing in the city. That terrace by the Coliseum is part of his bachelor pad, where he recuperates after allnight revelry and hosts parties large and small.

This last one was for his 65th birthday, and the milestone is making him more introspective than usual.

Jep’s nascent melancholy deepens when he’s visited by a stranger named Alfredo. He’s the husband of Jep’s first love, and he reports that she has died.

Opening her private diary after her death, Alfredo learned that she remained in love with Jep her whole life, despite the fact that she, not Jep, broke things off.

A sense of loss dogs Jep afterward, but it’s a beautiful, suave sadness, the kind that might incline a man to linger more than usual over life’s sen-

Toni Servillo stars in “The Great Beauty,” a movie focused on appreciating beauty where it can be found. sory pleasures – delights that Sorrentino and fellow screenwriter Umberto Contarello readily supply.

Abetted by Luca Bigazzi’s lush cinematography, they take us on candlelit tours of secret museums, peek into places where the wealthy are pampered and wander into an ancient ruin where a lone giraffe stands under a spotlight.

Many of these scenes tilt toward the surreal, making the most of Servillo’s unflappability.

The actor looks like a man who has seen every form of decadence the human imagination can create, and participated in many of them. But Servillo gives Jep an intellectual spark and a generosity of spirit one doesn’t expect from a veteran of so many skindeep friendships.

When provoked by a woman who has been bemoaning the do-nothing narcissism of her peers, he calmly hacks apart her idealized self-image, then affectionately suggests that their whole social circle is similarly flawed.

Uttering what could be the motto of a movie so focused on appreciating

beauty where it can be found, he implores her, “We’re all in tatters. Pass the time with us nicely.”

The film reaches a natural, eloquent stopping point before it hits the two-hour mark, but it continues, altering course slightly to focus on a subplot involving the Catholic Church.

This chapter may be more prosaic than what precedes it, telling us things we already understood about Jep’s new pursuit of deeper truths.

But Sorrentino has his eye out for transporting moments – at daybreak on the terrace, for instance, where a flock of migrating flamingos has stopped to sleep.

There, a withered nun, whose life of voluntary poverty is a silent rebuke to the luxury around her, expels what breath is in her lungs, blowing the birds on their way.

• “The Great Beauty” received three-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is unrated and contains nudity, sexual content, strong language and drug themes. It is in Italian with subtitles and runs 142 minutes.

Fake pregnancy lures man into relationship Teacher’s decision was unprofessional DEAR ABBY

Dear Abby: A friend of mine faked a pregnancy to get a man to stay with her. Once he moved in, she told him she’d had a miscarriage. She even went so far as to name this so-called baby.

He now has the baby’s name tattooed on his arm! She goes on Facebook and talks about how she misses her “little baby boy,” and counts every month as though it is his birthday. Every time I read it I get a sick feeling.

I want to tell this man the truth. I know for a FACT she was not pregnant. I’m not sure how to go about this. If I say something, I know I will end up the bad guy.

Slower heart rate is normal for people in good shape Dear Doctor K: Last time I went to the doctor, my heart rate was 55 beats per minute.

What could be causing my slow heartbeat? Is it dangerous?

Dear Reader: A normal heart rate at rest is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. A slow heart rate, of less than 60 beats per minute, is called bradycardia. You have just a slight bradycardia.

Bradycardia can be normal if you’re a well-conditioned athlete. A patient of mine bicycles 50 miles a week and has a resting heart rate of 50. Regular exercise improves the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently. As a result, the heart doesn’t need to beat as often to supply the body’s needs.

But sometimes bradycardia is caused by an abnormal heart condition. To understand what can go wrong, you need to understand how the heart is supposed to work.

The heart is a fist-sized muscle. It has four chambers, each with walls of muscle.

Each chamber pumps when the muscle of the chamber gets an electrical signal to do so.

When everything is working properly, an electrical signal initiates a heartbeat. This

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff signal comes from the heart’s sinus node, located in the right atrium (one of the two upper chambers of the heart, the atria).

From the sinus node, the signal travels through bundles of cells that carry the signals as if they were a copper wire. The signal first travels to the atrioventricular (A-V) node, located between the atria.

Then the signal travels through another bundle of cells (called the bundle of His) that is located between the ventricles (the heart’s lower chambers).

From there, the signal travels to the muscular walls of the ventricles, which respond to the signal by pumping. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

A problem in the sinus node can cause bradycardia. Or it can result when signals don’t properly pass through the A-V node and bundle of His. Bradycardia also can be a side effect of certain medications.

Treatment depends on what

is causing the bradycardia. If your heartbeat is slow because you’re a healthy athlete, you probably don’t need treatment.

Most people don’t need treatment unless they have bothersome symptoms. When I see a patient with an unusually slow pulse at rest, I often have him walk up two flights of stairs. If his heart is healthy, the heart rate will jump in response to exercise.

Bradycardia can be caused by certain medicines (the most common of which are beta-blockers), or by certain diseases (such as an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism).

Bradycardia resulting from certain cardiac arrhythmias can be treated with a permanent pacemaker. When implanted in the body, this device generates electrical impulses that regulate the heartbeat.

When it’s abnormal, a slow heart rate almost always has an effective treatment. But I’ll bet it’s not abnormal in you, just healthy.

Dr. Wallace: I know you are a former teacher and high school principal, so I’m hoping you can help me. I am a very good student. I have a relatively high IQ and my grade-point average is 3.96. I understand that there is a lot of cheating going on at my high school.

Two weeks ago, our teacher gave us a homework assignment that was going to be graded.

My teacher told me to put the wrong answers down for each question and to give these answers to anyone who asked me for them. He said that he wanted to catch some of the cheaters.

Well, three of my best friends asked to see my homework and all three copied my “wrong” answers. The next day the three were called into the vice principal’s office and were suspended from school for a week and a letter was put into their confidential files stating that they were caught cheating. The three were also given an F on the assignment.

To say that my friends are upset with me is an understatement. They refuse to talk to me and have told the whole school that I was a fink and got them suspended. The teacher is now sorry that he had me set up other students to get caught for cheating.

Now, when I get to school, I feel totally abandoned. I hate going to school knowing that everybody hates me. I keep telling myself that I did nothing wrong. I only did what the teacher asked me to do. Did I do anything wrong? – Nameless, Somewhere in Indiana.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace you to be part of his sting operation to catch cheaters. While cheating is both wrong and a big headache for education, catching and punishing habitual culprits should never involve setting up innocent students as “bait.” The devastating consequences are easy to imagine.

You were doubly used. Your teacher, in his zeal to catch the wrongdoers, gave no thought to the likely effect your participation would have on your friendships. But your less-than-ethical friends were also using you.

The fact that they are ostracizing you now, rather than admitting their own guilt as cheaters, points to the shallowness of their friendship.

You must stop worrying about the loss of their friendship. Be proactive about making new friends. Get involved in school clubs and activities. This will give you the opportunity to meet other students and start building new relationships.

You did nothing wrong, and this will eventually blow over.

My only suggestion is that you re-examine your willingness to do what others ask you to do. I refer to both your friends and your teacher. Don’t allow yourself to be set up like this again!

Your teacher made a serious error. He was unprofessional and should have been disciplined by his superiors.

Happy Thanksgiving to my American readers.

Each year, several good bridge books are republished, and 2013 was no exception.

Four came from England: “Bridge for the Connoisseur” by Hugh Kelsey, “The Rabbi and the Weaker Sex” by David Bird and Ron Klinger (originally titled “Kosher Bridge 2”), “Playing to Win at Bridge” by Ron Klinger (all Weidenfeld & Nicolson), and “Card Play Technique” by Victor Mollo and Nico Gardener (Master Point Press).

Kelsey discusses 58 interesting deals. The rabbi book is humorous and instructive. Klinger gives 90 problems, moving from elementary to intermediate and on to advanced.

The Mollo and Gardener book covers all aspects of declarer play and defense, with quizzes at the end of each chapter. Originally published in 1955, this edition has been modernized by Mark Horton, editor of Bridge Magazine.

West leads a low spade and East puts up the queen. What should declarer do?

South has seven top tricks: one spade (given the lead), three hearts, one diamond and two clubs. He can get the other winners from diamonds, but if that finesse is losing, East will return a spade. Here, as you can see, if South takes the first trick, he goes down, losing one diamond and four spades. But as long as declarer ducks the first trick, which the authors say requires willpower, the contract is safe.

East returns his second spade and West wins, but he has no entry. And if spades were 4-3, South would lose at most one diamond and three spades.

Home sweet home: Finding a place to retire

“No matter our age,” we’re looking for “a relatively low cost of living and housing; mild weather; a favorable tax situation; a low crime rate; an active downtown; free-flowing traffic; good medical facilities; and a variety of activities to stay fit,” said Annette Fuller, managing editor of Where to Retire magazine.

Walkability, a good farmers market, proximity to relatives, arts and culture, and the presence of a college or university are desirable, too, said Gabrielle Redford, editorial projects manager for AARP The Magazine.

To find out if a city is right for you, “test-drive it for a month,” suggests Redford.

“Live there and experience it before making the big decision. Try it during different

seasons, too, if you can.

“Big cities still attract, such as Austin, Texas, and Santa Fe, N.M., but the little guys – such as Mountain Home, Ark.; Natchez, Miss.; and Port Townsend, Wash. – have many relocated retirees who proudly boast of their new home and delight in finding an off-thebeaten-path location.”

Fuller suggests the following list of 10 “undiscovered havens,” which were highlighted in the recently published “America’s 100 Best Places to Retire.”

1. Black Hills, S.D. Home to the highest concentration of parks, monuments and memorials in the U.S., the Black Hills in South Dakota are an outdoor recreation heaven, with four beautiful seasons and no state income tax.

2. Brunswick, Maine Brunswick is home to Bowdoin College, founded in 1794, and locals enjoy its numerous cultural events.
