Longtime Little Traveler buyer Rosenthal dies at 90

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For more than four decades, Alvin Rosenthal was a part-owner and buyer for The Little Traveler, at 404 S. Third St., Geneva.

A cousin of current owner Michael Simon’s wife, Rosenthal bought the store, along with Simon’s father and other partners in 1971, and was the driving force behind it for years. Rosenthal was in charge of buyers, went through markets in England in search of antiques and was part of one of the first trade delegations to China after President Nixon normalized relations there in the 1970s, Simon said.

“He was sleeping under mosquito netting because in Beijing, they had no screens,” Simon said. “He did not speak Chinese, and the Chinese did not speak English, so they did all their communicating with sign language or numbers.”

Rosenthal, 90, died Saturday at his home in Boca Raton, Florida, after a lengthy illness, Simon said.

“Alvin’s love for The Little Traveler and the people who are a part of it showed in everything he did,” Simon said. “His creativity, good taste and resourcefulness are largely responsible

“He had an unending curiosity for everything that was new and different.

When I’d go through the wholesale market with him, it was always like being with a celebrity or a rock star,” Simon said. “He was a legendary individual because of his good taste and longevity in the industry and innovations – and because he was such a gentleman.”

One year, Rosenthal brought carved wooden rice buckets used by Chinese rice farmers to be sold for holding flower arrangements or other household items, Simon said.

“We brought in a truckload and sold them all within a month,” Simon said.

Rosenthal did not marry and did not have hobbies, Simon said, adding that his work was the outlet for Rosenthal’s creativity and interest in style and color.

In fact, Rosenthal worked until he was 87, retiring only because of declining health, Simon said.

“Going back 20 years, he was part of United Airline’s Million Mile Club,” Simon said. “He never ran out of frequent-flier miles.”

Geneva couple delivers Thanksgiving meal to police

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When Bill Ferry walked into the Geneva Police Department, it was not to pay a ticket or report a crime.

Instead, it was to deliver a 20-pound turkey he had just finished cooking on his grill.

His wife, Denicia Ferry, followed close behind, bringing in containers of stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy – all steaming hot and wrapped in foil.

“It’s because they do a lot, and it’s our way of saying thanks,” Denicia Ferry said.

“We do it to help our community.”

The Geneva couple said they would be delivering a

similar holiday meal to the Geneva Fire Department in December for Christmas. The Ferrys said they just started

doing this type of thank-you holiday dinner this year to support their community, but they have participated in

cooking charity dinners in the past.

Denicia Ferry credited her husband with doing all the cooking, saying she was just along to help deliver it.

A surprised Geneva Police Officer Rob Davis was called out to accept the dinner gift.

“I wasn’t expecting this,” Davis said. “I would just like to thank them very much for a wonderful dinner.”

“And thank you for all you guys do,” Denicia Ferry said.

Davis and Bill Ferry talked turkey for a bit – about how they like to cook them on the grill.

“They grilled it like I do mine,” Davis said with a smile.

New sports gastropub set to open early next year in Batavia Crosstown Pub and Grill will take over El Casanova space

by El Casanova Mexican restaurant at 1890 Mill St. in Batavia.

El Casanova, which recently closed, took over the space in 2012.

It once was occupied by the Don Manuel restaurant.

It is located near the Randall 15 IMAX movie theater.

The Batavia City Council on Monday is set to vote on a liquor license for Crosstown Pub and Grill.

Another Crosstown Pub and Grill location is at 909 E Ogden Ave., Naperville.

This would be its second restaurant.

Its menu features items such as chicken wings, burgers, flatbread sandwiches, tacos, enchiladas, jambalaya and salmon, along with a variety of craft beers.

Crosstown’s owners plan to do some renovations, including adding a bar in one room, and a building permit has been applied for, Batavia building commissioner Jeff Albertson said.

The plan is for the restau-

rant to be open by early January, Albertson said.

The change in ownership is not the only restaurant news in Batavia.

Honey-Jam Cafe, at 521 N. Randall Road in Batavia, is set to reopen soon after the restaurant was closed for almost a year.

Honey-Jam Cafe originally opened in August 2010. The restaurant closed in October 2013, but signs for Honey-Jam Cafe recently reappeared on the building.

The restaurant’s menu includes such fare as pancakes, skillets, omelets, waffles, French toast, burgers, wraps and homemade soups.

“Home” is an important concept to this acclaimed architect, not only for the relevancy it has for his career, but for the appreciation he gained for St. Charles during the months he recently spent in Vinnytsia, a large city in the Ukraine, during his time as a community development volunteer with the Peace Corps.

While in the Ukraine, Mike took many photographs, of people, of places and of the natural world around him.

One, in particular, of a single maple leaf aglow in fall colors against a sea of still-green foliage, caught his artist’s eye.

So, when a brilliant orange bench in the shape of a maple leaf was installed in the park’s Japanese garden area, Mike said to his partner and fellow Peace Corps volunteer Margaret Hankamp, “Maggie, there’s your leaf.”

Motivated by memories of more tranquil times in this now war-torn country, the couple bought the bench and has generously donated it to the permanent collection of sculptures at Mt. St. Mary Park.

A plaque engraved, “Love, Laugh, Learn” acknowledges their contribution and also succinctly expresses their attitudes toward their community, wherever they may find it – from Mt. St. Mary Park in St. Charles to Gorky Park in Vinnytsia.

“The word ‘volunteer’ has a negative connotation in the Ukraine,” explained Dixon. “It’s left over from the old Soviet mentality when people were forced to perform manual labor or serve in the military. What we did was introduce the concept of volunteerism, of helping someone you don’t know. Especially now with the war going on, that concept is growing in importance.”

Dixon and Hankamp have devoted their lives to this concept, not just with the Peace Corps, but through numerous civic and professional groups, such as the Kiwanis and the St. Charles Library Foundation. As volunteers, they offer their

time, talent and resources to organizations they believe in and work to instill that same sense of collaboration and cooperation in others.

“This was just another aspect of our volunteering,” said Hankamp. “It was us saying, ‘Oh, we like that; we

want you to continue and so here’s something meaningful to help keep it going.”

The maple leaf bench sculpture is a vibrant addition to the park’s collection.

sitting and playing near the bench.

“It’s a joyful thing,” said Hankamp.

Finding a permanent home for his work was also meaningful to Joe Krajkiewcz. Exhibiting in the “Sculpture in the Park” exhibition for the first time in 2014, the Grandville, Michigan, sculptor was flattered that Dixon, Hankamp and the St. Charles Park District felt such a connection to his work.

“As an artist, there’s really no greater compliment than the purchase of a piece,” Krajkiewcz said. “It’s somebody saying that they like your work as much as you do. It’s great that Mike Dixon and Maggie Hankamp were able to donate it for permanent placement in the park. That the city thought highly enough of the piece, and is willing to add it to their collection, is also a huge compliment.”

With its location near the water and the walking path, the maple leaf bench also is a great complement to its surroundings.

“When we realized it would be taken away at the end of the sculpture exhibition, we thought, well, it could stay here,” said Dixon.

Dixon, unfortunately, did not get to stay in the Ukraine as long as he had hoped to.

When protests broke out and violence escalated, the Peace Corps called for an emergency evacuation of its volunteers in the Ukraine.

He has been designated an international spokesman for the Peace Corps and gives presentations throughout the area about his experiences, outfitted in traditional Ukrainian garb, itself a work of art. Although he has been able to return to the country since the revolution, there are concerns about the people he met and partnerships he established.

“Your heart goes out to other people, and you make a connection,” said Hankamp.

“It’s what you put out there.”

What Dixon and Hankamp have put out there – the maple leaf bench by Krajkiewcz – will furnish a meaningful connection for park district visitors for years to come.

GENEVA – The city of Geneva has announced its holiday schedule.

The Geneva City Hall and all city buildings, with the exception of the police and fire departments, will be closed today and Friday for Thanksgiving.

The same city buildings will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 for Christmas, as well as Jan. 1 in honor of New Year’s Day. Garbage collection will be pushed back one day later than normal during these holiday weeks.

Blue Island man in jail after escape from Batavia police car BATAVIA – A Blue Island man remains in Kane County Jail after he briefly escaped Saturday from Batavia police custody. Bond was set at $20,000.

Joshua R. Manning, 24, of the 12200 block of Longwood Drive, Blue Island, has been charged with escaping from a police officer, obstructing/resisting a police officer and obstructing identification.

a warrant out of Cook County for his arrest for burglary, Mazza said.

Manning was handcuffed and placed in the back of a squad car, Mazza said. During Manning’s arrest, he appeared intoxicated, Mazza said.

The officer then left the car to talk to Manning’s sister in the parking lot of the apartment complex. When he got back to the car, Manning was gone, Mazza said.

With the help of a Kane County sheriff’s police dog,

Manning was found a short time later along railroad tracks a couple blocks away from the complex. Mazza said it appears Manning was able to escape because of a mechanical malfunction with the doors on the police car.

“Those doors don’t open on the inside,” Mazza said. “He shouldn’t have been able to get the door open.”

The police car has been temporarily taken out of service while it is being fixed, Mazza said.

Kane County Circuit Judge David Akemann is set to rule soon on whether Rodrigue Ceda Makindu can play for the Mooseheart boys basketball team, or whether he will have to sit out another season.

Akemann in February denied a request for Makindu, a 6-foot-4 player who is from Congo, to be able to play basketball in the Illinois High School Association tournament. Mooseheart went on to win its first state championship.

As Mooseheart gets ready to start its new season, Aurora attorney Judd Lofchie recently filed a complaint against the IHSA for not allowing Makindu to play basketball.

The IHSA in January 2013 approved a bylaw stating that international students attending school in Illinois who are not participating in an approved student exchange pro-

gram “will not be eligible with respect to residence or transfer for the duration of their high school attendance unless they meet the requirements of the applicable provisions of the residency and transfer bylaws, as determined in an official ruling from the executive director.”

In his motion, Lofchie noted Makindu had to sit out sports for an entire school year. Mooseheart is set to play Illinois Math and Science Academy on Tuesday.

“No amount of money damages can compensate Ceda if he is wrongfully deprived by the IHSA of a chance to compete fairly in the state basketball playoffs and possibly hurt his chances of getting college athletic scholarship assistance,” Lofchie’s motion stated.

In his response to the motion, IHSA attorney Dave Bressler argued that the IHSA is trying to keep the playing field level for all high school athletes.

Under the new agreement, the district will give up its rights to oversee the trust funds but will regain them if the center ceases to exist, according to court papers filed last month.

The separation began when the school board decided to focus its effort on serving its students’ needs and “not on the broader group of citizens residing in the St. Charles community. To that end, the board of education intends to take back operating control of the [center],” according to the court filing.

The center has a lease agreement with the school district through June 30, Smith said.

“We will be meeting with the school district in the next couple weeks to talk about that,” Smith said.

ST. CHARLES – A move that started in 2011 to separate the Dellora A. Norris Cultural Arts Center from St. Charles School District 303 is pending in Kane County Circuit Court, as court papers await a judge’s approval for a settlement agreement.

The issue is scheduled for a hearing Feb. 15 before Kane County Circuit Judge David Akemann at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva, court records show.

The 1,000-seat theater was established in 1978. The cultural arts center includes a performing arts theater and art gallery at the Norris Campus adjacent to St. Charles East High School.

School board President Steve Spurling said he supports the settlement.

“I think it’s a good thing for all parties,” Spurling said. “It was a great idea 35 years ago, but times change ... and I think it was a good way to do it.”

Mark Smith, a member of the Norris Center’s nonprofit board, said the board and the school district spent some time negotiating a separation agreement. The issue is pend-

ing in court because any time a relationship that benefits from a trust is changed, it requires the court’s approval, Smith said.

“It is, was and always will be the goal of the Norris Cultural Arts Center to maintain positive, productive relationships with the school district board and administration,” Smith said. “It exists as a nonprofit corporation and has been since the inception of the facility here.”

The center no longer derives rental income.

Any rental income has gone to the school district since 2011, under the new agreement. Rental income had constituted the bulk of the center’s revenue, Smith said.

“We were the property manager, and now we are the tenants,” Smith said. “It’s forced us to create a new business model and reinvent the Norris Cultural Arts Center.

That’s not something you do overnight.”

The center also has seen a 75 percent income decline from the trusts, so the center’s officials are looking at new ways to produce and present events at the theater, Smith wrote in an email statement.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Township supervisor has taken over a holiday program after its local founder died earlier this year.

John Arthur Anderson is coordinating the Jim Wheeler Toys for Kids program, which benefits children in need through the Tri-Cities Salvation Army.

The annual project was renamed this year after Wheeler died in April at the age of 68.

“Every child that the Tri-Cities Salvation Army helps will get one or two toys because of what Jim Wheeler started 31 years ago,” Anderson said on Tuesday.

New, unwrapped toys – and gift cards for teens – are being collected through Dec. 14 at about 40 sites in the Tri-Cities, including all St. Charles School District 303 grade schools and high schools.

The St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club will have walkers accepting unwrapped toys Saturday as the Jim Wheeler Toys for Kids float makes its way down the Electric Christmas parade route in St. Charles.

The parade begins at 5:30 p.m.

and at least one downtown business is going the extra mile for the program. On Friday, 10 percent of every paid bill at McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub, 109 W. Main St., St. Charles, will benefit Toys for Kids, Anderson said. The pub also will donate $1 for every toy collected at the business through Saturday.

After Dec. 14, the toys will be organized so that qualifying parents on Dec. 19 and 20 can make age-appropriate gift selections at the Salvation Army, 1710 S. 7th Ave., St. Charles, Anderson said.

A time to cherish blessings It’s Thanksgiving Day, and there are many things I could do with this column. I could reflect upon my childhood memories of this holiday, from the excitement of the parades on TV, to the feast in the evening. I could go on about my favorite Thanksgiving foods and about how sweet potatoes are always better with mini marshmallows on top. I could vent about how Thanksgiving is frequently forgotten in the hurry for Christmas to arrive.

Or, I could simply do what Thanksgiving is intended for: to give thanks.

It may sound cliché, but I have so much to be thankful for. I love that November sets aside a day to remember this, as people too often focus on what they don’t have instead of what they do. We tend to forget our many blessings in the midst of trials, losing sight of what gets us through those same trials. I’ll admit that sometimes, I can fall into the “forgetting my blessings” category. But on Thanksgiving, I always try to take the time to remember the things that I’m lucky to have. There are many who are less fortunate than I am, and that can serve as a reminder to all of us to cherish the people, experiences and other things we have in our lives.

First and foremost, I’m thankful for my family.

My parents have always been my biggest advocates, supporting me in whatever I do and always taking care of me. My three little sisters are the best I could ever ask for, consistently bringing a smile to my face and brightening my days.

Family isn’t just limited to the people I live with each day, though. I am also lucky to have an amazing extended family, from my treasured grandparents to beloved aunts, uncles and

This Thanksgiving, I’d like to encourage you all to truly stop and give thanks.

I think you’ll be surprised at what you realize. There’s more to life than the struggles that plague us on a daily basis. ... Instead, we can find our blessings and cling to them with gratitude.

Give thanks for the blessings in your life Charles Dickens once wrote: “Reflect on your present blessings, on which every man has many, not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”

Some people joyfully welcome Thanksgiving as the start of an eagerly-anticipated holiday season, and can quickly and easily tick off many reasons to be thankful. Others, often through circumstances not of their making, find even cracking a smile hard to do, and relate more to Dickens’ Scrooge than the above quote.

Research suggests that simply being thankful can help one find that smile. In her 2008 book, “The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want,” psycholo-

gist Sonja Lyubomirsky found that simply counting one’s blessings – either privately or through expressions of appreciation to others – actually created happy feelings.

Moreover, a study reported in the 2003 edition of the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” said people who focused on gratitude and the positive forces in their lives had greater well-being. These individuals were not only happier, they were healthier and had tighter social bonds.

Perhaps the Pilgrims were onto something.

As one might guess, ship travel across the Atlantic Ocean in 1620 was less than pleasant, yet once the Pilgrims

arrived at their destination, they offered thanks, even though two of their members had died and most were sick.

By the end of their first winter on American soil, half of that original group had died.

Yet, after their first harvest a year later, they celebrated for three days, despite hardships, loss of loved ones and the fact they were dining on unfamiliar foods with strangers in a new land.

If you’re still coming up short on blessings and reasons for gratitude, consider this: We live in a country that sets aside – as a national holiday – 24 hours once a year just to give thanks.

Now that is a blessing to count.

‘Christmas on Broadway’ ushers in the holiday spirit If you go

By TOM WITOM planitkanenews@kcchronicle.com Fox Valley Repertory’s production of “Christmas on Broadway,” a seasonal musical written and arranged by Rick Lewis, is brightening the stage at Pheasant Run Resort with its mix of new and old songs designed to keep holiday blues at bay.

The fast-paced revue, directed and choreographed

by Kyle Donahue, features a likable, fleet-footed and vocally proficient cast that is as comfortable with original and less-familiar songs as it is with traditional ones like “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

Meanwhile, Stempel shares a fantasy of being rich, famous and powerful in “My Simple Christmas Wish.” Kolton has all the right moves as a disgruntled Mrs. Claus as she expresses her regrets in “Surabaya Santa” at being left alone each Christmas Eve. A nutty spoof, “Phantom of the Nutcracker Express,” goes over the top, though audience members seemed to love it.

A nine-member children’s chorus wearing holiday jammies added sparkle to the twohour show during the second act (“Christmas Alphabet”). A solo (“Believe”) performed by 13-year-old Ivanna Kurywczak of South Elgin also was warmly received.

Not every number is a dazzler, but on the whole “Christmas on Broadway,” with its high production values and talented cast, provides a fine tonic as the season for making merry moves into high gear.

Nelson brothers bringing Christmas show to Arcada Theatre

Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, the identical twin sons of the late Ricky Nelson, who was killed in a New Year’s Eve plane crash in 1985, will perform Friday, Dec. 5, at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

Matthew and Gunnar Nelson achieved success in the ’90s with their band Nelson and their debut album, “After the Rain,” which reached double platinum status. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Matthew Nelson about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: I know you were at the Arcada Theatre four years ago for the “Ricky Nelson Remembered” show. This time, you guys are doing a Christmas show, and its going to be multimedia. For those who come out to the show, what should they expect?

Matthew Nelson: People tend the love the vast amount of film footage that we’re fortunate enough to have

of our family, just from “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” television sitcom and we’ve also got some home movies.

My dad had done a couple of Christmas songs Matthew Nelson on the “Ozzie and Harriet” show back in the ’50s.

The truth of the matter is that in our family, my fondest memories were Christmases.

I think a lot of it had to with the fact that my dad was incredibly hard-working. He had four kids in private school, and he lived in Los Angeles, so let’s just say he needed to work.

He was gone about 300 days a year playing shows. So, when Christmas came around, it was sacred. He wouldn’t work on the holidays.

It was kind of when everybody got together. People were happy, and differences were left at the door.

We actually are recording a Christmas album. It’s mostly acoustic-based, as the show is. It’s two brothers singing with acoustic instruments.

The idea was to take some holiday classics and do them our way, again respecting the heritage of them, but kind of putting our spin on them.

Schelkopf: Does it always amaze you what kind of impact your dad had on people?

Nelson: If you saw my dad, he was

I’m not surprised one bit. He deserves it.

It’s just a shame. He got a lot of attention from his fans when he was alive, but he didn’t get a whole lot of respect from his critics until after he died. And then people realized we lost a big one.

It’s what I’ve always wanted to do since I can remember, aside from wanting to be a fighter pilot for a second when I was 6 years old.

Through doing what he did, he made me realize that it’s possible. It’s achievable.

I was pretty keenly aware that there were going to be a lot of people that looked at us like we didn’t deserve a break. I actually think that we were five years behind of getting a record deal when we should have, but it just made us stronger.

The truth is, I did have a pretty huge run there for a while at a very young age.

It was phenomenal for a while, and it was scary.

There was a while there where Gunnar and I couldn’t go out in public together. We would cause riots. It was nuts.

What got me through it was something that my dad said about a career in music being just a series of comebacks.

It’s how you handle the lows, not the highs. You’ve got to be able to come back and keep swinging.

Here I am, I’m 47 years old, and I can say that I play music that I believe in.

I’m still liking what I do for a living. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be doing it.

Schelkopf: I know Nelson reunited in 2009.

What is the future of Nelson or what music projects are you going to be working on next year?

Nelson: Next year is an anniversary year for us. I shudder to say that it’s been 25 years since the debut of our first album, “After the Rain.”

I kind of want to keep challenging myself and do different things. I love the learning process.

We’re planning to mothball the Nelson moniker, which kind of keeps us stuck in what we did 25 years ago.

I think what we are going to wind up doing is a project that would be like The Everly Brothers making their first album now, with modern technology.

And it feels very comfortable for us.

It’s still two brothers, a couple of guitars and a great song. And that’s really what Nelson was all about.

Senior Blake Fialka relishes both settings, which is to say he’s a veteran of both.

Still, another East fixture wonders if even the die-hards can place Fialka without help this season. Fialka filled lineup sheets at 182 pounds last winter. These days, he’s 145.

“I don’t think a lot of people are going to recognize him,” said East coach Jason Potter, a former Saints standout. “They’re going to think he’s a cousin or a brother or somebody.”

No, this is Fialka, who might have sent the printers into fits had East’s football team published updated rosters for every game. The defensive tackle opened his final prep football season at about 205 pounds, he said. After that, the only constant was his listed height, 5-foot-7.

To increase that attribute, however, Fialka had to get lighter.

In turn, that would improve his fitness for the wrestling season, but that’s not the only area of his life where Fialka has found a boost.

“I feel more confident in myself. I feel more capable of getting things done, and I’m excited for what this year has to come,” he said. “And hopefully, it’s just worth it in the end. I’m going to work my hardest to get what needs to get done and prove everybody wrong.”

Fialka and Potter reiterate that Fialka has cut the weight

in a healthy manner at no risk to his long-term health.

In a sport where climbing or dropping a weight class or two between seasons is common, moving four classes raises eyebrows.

During the process, Fialka discovered plenty of habits he wanted to change to keep from being the “chubby kid in the bracket.”

“I was just unhealthy. I didn’t like the way I looked.

I couldn’t do some of the things I can do now,” he said.

“More and more as I got into cutting or losing the weight, I just started getting a more healthy lifestyle, and I’m really comfortable with where I’m at.”

Wrestling season preview capsules TEAMS TO WATCH Batavia “We’re going to be an improved team from last year, and we’ve got a good group of seniors, guys that will actually lead the room, so we’re pretty excited about that,” Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer said. Noah Frazier, who will swing between 195 pounds and 220 in the early season, helps anchor that group, but the Bulldogs feature skilled younger wrestlers including sophomores Joe Posledni (138/145) and Seth Winkle (126/132).

“Lots of spinach and (grilled) chicken. Lots of water. No breads or anything,” Fialka said. “I haven’t had any fast food or anything in a really long time. So just living the healthy lifestyle.”

Never a big fan of fruit in the past, Fialka has consumed plenty of watermelon, apples and oranges over the past few months, as well, while keeping a steady running regimen outside of the daily rigors of the mat room.

When it comes to practice partners, Potter notes Fialka “really has the spectrum of the room” over the past two seasons. His shift fortifies the first half of the Saints’ senior-heavy lineup, which includes Keone Derain at 152 and Ramon Lopez, sidelined with an early-season injury, at 160.

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A sluggish third quarter lead to the St. Charles North boys basketball team’s first loss of the season Wednesday night.

The North Stars were outscored, 25-12, in the third quarter as Metea Valley rallied to win, 59-50, in both squads’ second games in St. Charles East’s Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament.

“We have to figure out who we are,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “It is the

second night in a row that has happened.”

Jack Callaghan led the North Stars (1-1) with 14 points, 12 of those in the second half. Callaghan also had a rebound and a steal in the losing effort.

“Jack had a productive night,” Poulin said of the 6-foot-3 senior. “I thought he had a really good game.”

North opened the game firing from long range and was out to a 9-0 lead on 3-pointers

by David Ponza, Mikey Schroeder and Jake Ludwig.

It was not until 3:49 left in

the first quarter that Metea Valley recorded its first point.

“I was happy with the tempo we played at in the first quarter,” Poulin said. “We were getting the shots we wanted and executing beautifully.”

The North Stars led throughout the first half and until 4:43 to play in the third quarter. Metea Valley (2-0) scored the first five points of the second half to nearly erase a 26-20 halftime deficit.

Metea took the lead at 3534 midway through the third quarter and never relin-

quished the lead. Matt Helwig and Mark Konkle lead the Mustangs with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Helwig’s 3-pointer to open the second half sparked the Mustangs.

“We talked about that at halftime, about Helwig coming off of screens for 3s, and then they came out and did it,” Poulin said.

The 3s that were falling in the first quarter were coming up short for the North Stars in the second half as they never could get closer than three points in the fourth quarter.

Schroeder scored eight points for the North Stars.

He also pulled down two rebounds and had three steals.

Jake Ludwig and John Davern both added seven points in the losing effort.

“We were outhustled and outworked. They were more physical than we were,” Poulin said. “We need to look at the tape and see if that was all Metea Valley or if someone of that was us not performing.”

St. Charles North next plays in the tournament at 6 p.m. Friday against Downers Grove South.

Former Batavia girls soccer player Bre Choffin recently concluded her college playing career at St. Ambrose. was like, ‘It’s going to be fine.’

And then I showed up, and he was like, ‘Oh my gosh. I’m so happy.’ ” Juggling athletics and undergraduate studies is plenty of a challenge for most student-athletes. Juggling athletics and graduate studies is a whole different story. That’s what Choffin did the first part of this year, her first as a graduate student and her last as a collegiate soccer player.

Choffin, a defender, was named to first-team all-conference squad in the Midwest Collegiate Conference at the NAIA level. Choffin also finished with four goals and two assists. The Bees finished 12-63 and finished as runner-up in the conference and lost in the conference tournament title match.

But Choffin wasn’t going to have it any other way.

“I wouldn’t want to spend my senior year not playing soccer,” Choffin said. “I was just thankful for the opportunity to play, that my coach was letting me work through grad school, letting me work through missing practice,

missing a few games. I still got my starting position to play. I came to a few games late, and I still got to play. My coach really worked with me, my teammates really worked with me, and I really appreciated all the support I got from my family. Actually, my professors, too, they were really supportive.”

That day her professor kicked her out of class was kind of a breakthrough moment when Choffin knew she had to focus on studies but also savor the end of the college soccer chapter of her life.

“That was a moment where I knew I really have to focus, I really have to buckle down, I really have to enjoy my time with my teammates, my best friends, my time just playing because I’m never going to have that experience again the rest of my life,” Choffin said. “I really looked at that as eye-opening.”

Choffin is getting an advanced degree in physical therapy and said she’s on a fast track to her doctorate.

She’s applied her studies to the soccer field, using her

teammates as subjects and extensions of her education – “Hey, can I look at your guys’ knees and see if I can apply what I learned in class?” – and she has things pretty well mapped out for her life after soccer.

But she can’t entirely leave soccer behind, and that’s why she and some of her senior friends are teaming up to play older women in a winter indoor league, where they plan to “smoke all those women on the field.”

Asked if she’d be one of those older women still playing 20 years down the road, she said maybe but that she hopes she can be coaching for her future kids, too.

Who knows? Maybe a future boss or co-worker will be kicking her out of the office to go coach her kid’s game.

Bre Choffin walked into a graduate class. And the professor told her to leave.

The professor wondered what she was doing there – an odd question, Choffin thought, because it’s where she was supposed to be. Or so the Batavia product thought.

She actually was supposed to be in two places at once: that physical therapy graduate class and a soccer field, where her St. Ambrose Fighting Bees were getting set to play without their captain. The professor understood that and sent Choffin to play a game with her team in her final season of her soccer career.

“There were two games I was going to miss because I had lab,” Choffin said. “The first game that I was going to miss, I wasn’t even going to tell my teachers about it because I was like, ‘School’s more important. I’ve got to focus on this.’ I was about to start class, and my teacher came up to me and he was like, ‘What are you doing here?’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean what am I doing here? I’m here for class.’ And he was like, ‘Don’t you have a soccer game?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, but it’s not a big deal.

My team, they’ll be fine.’

“And he was like, ‘Well you’re the captain, and you need to go.’ And I was like, ‘I can’t miss class.’ And he goes, ‘You have 60, 70 years of kinesiology and physical therapy left in your life. You only have one year of college soccer left.

So you need to go play in it.’

So my teacher pretty much kicked me out of class to go play in my soccer game. I was really excited about that. My teammates were really happy.

We ended up winning that game, so I was pretty proud.”

It sounds like some kind of movie scene, and that’s what Choffin said it felt like, too.

“It was like a movie scene,” she said. “I showed up for the game, and my coach had the biggest smile on his face.

(Leading up to the game) he was nervous, he was like, ‘I don’t know who we’re going to start in your position.’ I

So the 5-6 Bears roll into Motown for their Thanksgiving Day meeting with the 7-4 Detroit Lions on a two-game winning streak while the Lions have dropped their past two.

There is that.

The good news for the Bears, for the most part, stops there. This is a different Lions football team under first-year head coach Jim Caldwell than the Jim Schwartz clubs Bears fans became used to in recent seasons.

You like common opponents? The Lions are 5-3 against the Panthers, Packers, Jets, Bills, Vikings, Falcons, Dolphins and Patriots, against whom the Bears are 3-6. They beat the Packers, 24-7, while Green Bay has outscored the Bears, 93-31, in the Bears’ two losses.

The 34-9 beating the Lions took from New England this past Sunday after the Pats pasted the Bears, 51-23, four weeks ago is about the only thing these two have in common this year.

Things aren’t so dire for the 240 IHSA football coaches who entered the eightclass playoffs without advancing to this weekend’s championship games in Champaign, but the rationale still holds when it Dan comes to Friday and SatThorpe urday’s telecasts on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

“Yeah, I’ll be with a pad of paper and copying the games on DVR to see how people defend Cary-Grove, which is similar to Prairie Ridge, and we’re always going to see Prairie Ridge at some point,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “Obviously, pulling for Providence … and definitely pulling for Montini.”

Marmion lost to DeKalb, 21-20, in a Class 6A first-round game last month, but its season narrative wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Providence or Montini, who will vie for titles in 7A and 5A, respectively.

The host Celtics handed the Cadets their first loss of the season, 37-7, in a Chicago Catholic League crossover in Week 4. Five weeks later, Montini closed the regular season with a 27-14 home win against Marmion in a game that decided the Chicago Catholic Green co-champion.

“I’ll probably watch some of the game, you know,” Vargyas said. “I’ll probably watch college football more.”

Marmion, St. Francis, Aurora Christian and Montini joined the CCL from the former Suburban Christian Conference this fall.

Entering 2014, each of those schools had played for at least one state title in the past six seasons.

“That’s just the way it is being in this conference,” Thorpe said. “St. Francis, IC (Catholic Prep), Marian (Central), Montini. It’s just a regular year, which is very frustrating, because we’re right there. People don’t realize how close we are.”

The 7A final between Providence and Cary-Grove carries arguably the biggest local interest. Unbeaten CaryGrove eliminated St. Charles North (second round) and Geneva (quarterfinals) earlier in the 7A postseason.

Whether fans tune in or not, it’s likely they’ll see two participants in

that game on TV in years to come.

Providence receiver Miles Boykin and Cary-Grove offensive tackle Trevor Ruhland, also a spot defensive lineman, are Notre Dame recruits.

Game on: Vargyas suffered a left knee injury on the first defensive series of the Nazareth game and watched the second half from the sideline, clinging to crutches.

It turned out to be “just a little bruise,” Vargyas said, and shouldn’t threaten his availability for today’s turkey bowl at St. Francis’ Kuhn Memorial Stadium. Vargyas still is walking with a knee brace, however, so consider that early dibs on at least one of the quarterback spots.

This marks the first such Thanksgiving gathering for this group of Spartans, who finished 10-3 in their first season under coach Mike Fitzgerald and in Class 6A. “We just wanted to spend more time with each other,” Vargyas said. “It’s been a great experience, so we just wanted to get a few more plays in, I guess.”

Geneva boys basketball tops Hononegah at tourney KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE CRYSTAL LAKE – It’s only two games, but Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston still sees plenty for the Vikings to be excited about.

After Geneva handled Rockton Hononegah, 52-36, in Crystal Lake Central tournament play Wednesday, Ralston raved about a group that could advance to the tournament title game with a win against Prairie Ridge on Friday.

“While there’s room for improvement for us to be a little better as far as being crisp, we still had guys that

crashed the glass hard,” Ralston said.

“Hononegah was trying to do everything it could to make it hard on Nate (Navigato), but Nate still did a phenomenal job.

He didn’t force shots and he got the looks he wanted.”

Navigato scored 17 points for the 2-0 Vikings, while brothers Bennett Fuzak and Chandler Fuzak both chipped in 12 points. Loudon Vollbrecht added eight points, and was among a group of Vikings who defeated the Indians for the second time this month, albeit in a different sport. The Geneva football team beat Hononegah in a Class 7A, second-round

football playoff game earlier this month.

“The kids played really well today,” Ralston said. “Hononegah played a great game, I thought. They were a good matchup for us since they’re a team that likes to switch defenses.”

Sycamore Strombom Tournament: Burlington Central improved to 2-0 with a 4432 victory against Dundee-Crown. The Rockets led by eight points at the half and after three quarters.

“We’ve been able to really distribute the basketball and move it around and get it to the right person at the right time,” Rockets coach Brett Porto said.

“And we’re able to string some good defensive possessions together, which keeps us in games and extends leads and things like that.”

Eggs aren’t the cholesterol culprit they were thought to be Dear Doctor K: I hope you can answer this question once and for all: Are eggs bad for your health or not?

Dear Reader: I don’t think any medical issue is ever settled “once and for all.” New knowledge sometimes modifies or even replaces old knowledge. This surely has happened with the question of whether eggs are bad for your health.

I was taught, first by my parents and then in medical school, that you should eat eggs infrequently. The reason? A single egg yolk contains a whopping 213 milligrams of cholesterol. The thinking, then, went that eggs would raise your blood cholesterol levels. That, in turn, would increase your chance of developing atherosclerosis – cholesterol-filled plaques on the walls of arteries. And that in turn would increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

It seemed reasonable. So, I reserved eggs for Sunday mornings only.

Eggs also contain some hearthealthy substances: protein, vitamins B12 and D, riboflavin, folate, antioxidants and unsaturated fats. But the negative effects of cholesterol were thought to

Then research discovered something unexpected: Saturated fats in your diet raise your blood levels of total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol a lot more than does cholesterol in your diet.

Why? Because most of the cholesterol in your body does not come from your diet. Rather, it is made by your liver. And saturated fats in your diet cause your liver to make lots of cholesterol. (A large egg contains only about 1.5 grams of saturated fat.)

The next discovery came from large observational studies, many conducted here at Harvard Medical School. Hundreds of thousands of people in these studies have been followed for decades. What they eat, and the diseases they develop, are carefully recorded.

These studies show that the average healthy person suffers no negative health effects from eating an egg a day. In particular, the studies did not find a greater risk of heart attacks or strokes in

people who ate an egg a day. Plus, some, but not all, studies have shown that eating eggs regularly increases “good” HDL cholesterol and decreases triglycerides.

However, the studies did find some evidence that people with diabetes or people who already have heart disease probably should eat no more than three egg yolks per week. (Eating just the whites is fine.)

Be sure to cook the eggs until both the whites and the yolks are firm; undercooked eggs can transmit a bacterial infection called salmonella.

Finally, my colleagues in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard’s School of Public Health point out that what you eat with your eggs is an important consideration. They remind us that eggs with salsa and a whole-wheat English muffin are a far different meal than eggs with cheese, sausages, home fries and white toast.

It’s one of those obvious pieces of advice that’s easy to forget as you make, or order, breakfast.

I’m a senior and this is the first time I have ever skipped school. I did it for two reasons.

First, I really wanted to go to the beach with my friends, and second, I wanted to skip school, so when I go to future homecomings, I can talk to my friends about the time we ditched school.

Of course, my mom found out and she is throwing a fit. My punishment is that I’m grounded and I cannot attend any after-school activities for a month.

Look at the North and East hands. Defending against four spades, your partner (West) leads the heart ace, cashes the heart king, and shifts to the club seven.

What would you (East) do when declarer calls for dummy’s queen?

Would you find a different defense if South plays dummy’s 10?

This deal occurred 20 years ago and features some old-fashioned bidding. South’s three clubs was the Baron convention, asking partner to show four-card suits in ascending order – hence North’s three diamonds. But this had the disadvantage that the weak hand became the declarer.

Sitting East was Michael Prescott, who learned the game in New Zealand but moved to Australia several years ago. He realized that if South had the spade queen, the contract was unbeatable. And if West had queen-third of spades, South had to be kept out of his hand, so that he could not take the trump finesse. Ergo, at trick three, Prescott allowed dummy’s club queen to take the trick.

(If declarer had instead played the club 10, East would have won and returned a club.)

South now cashed dummy’s two top trumps to go down, losing one spade, two hearts and one club.

Yes, if he had instead cashed three diamond tricks and the club ace, then played another club, he could have endplayed East. But understandably he didn’t.

Among the notable occupants is ALE Solutions, a disaster recovery company that resides in a 5,500-square-foot unit in Dunham Center on the east side of St. Charles, states a news release.

“Bringing in a growing company like ALE Solutions is very exciting! It just goes to show that the economy is moving in a positive direction,” said commercial broker Sharon O’Leary in the release.

Acorn Deck’s kit homes blur line between indoors, outdoors

“There’s a very happy flow. The design is simple but complex,” Jane Gould said of her prefab Acorn Deck House in Accokeek, Maryland.

Jane Gould lives in what could roughly be described as an upscale, upsized 21st-century version of the old Sears kit home.

Her new house on a minimally cleared five-acre wooded lot in Accokeek, Maryland, was crafted by Acorn Deck House in Acton, Massachesetts, which shipped the prefabricated parts to the site for a local builder to put together.

Unlike the old Sears models, Gould’s home has a barn-like look. The post-and-beam structure has soaring rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows – some on three sides – that allow sunlight and nature to flood in. Plus, it has custom features and is sustainable.

“I love the interplay between inside and outside,” said Gould over coffee on a

recent Saturday morning.

Sitting at her dining table in a large, open area where the living and dining rooms and kitchen meet, a space surrounded by glass, Gould looked almost as if she were outside.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, architect Maryann Thompson designed the prototype, a pre-fabricated product line called “Hinge House,” which is supplied by Acorn Deck House.

“I can tell a woman designed the house,” Gould said, gesturing around the airy space, lofty ceiling, multiple doors, raised two-sided fireplace, oversized sliding windows and doors, and hidden bedrooms down the hall.

“The space is flexible, adaptable. There’s a very happy flow. The design is simple but complex.”

“Acorn Deck houses are beautiful,” said Thomp-

son. “They create a blurred threshold between inside and outside.”

The “Deck” component of Acorn Deck homes employs a post-and-beam construction that minimizes weight-bearing walls and gives the space a flexible structure.

Posts hold up the beams, creating a skeletal frame that stands on its own with the help of wooden decking at the ceiling. Everything in between the beams is non-load bearing, allowing for large windows and doors.

“All are bright and spacious with soaring ceilings and abundant glass walls.

That’s what we’re known for,” said Paul Buraczynski, general manager at Acorn Deck. “It enables us to open the house to the outside and create an indoor-outdoor feeling.”

In typical prefab construction, pieces come panelized, walls are built and sent in a shipping container to the site.

Sometimes, the entire house is built in advance and delivered to the site.

In contrast, Acorn Deck, like the Sears kit homes, manufactures a kit of parts made up of the columns, posts and decking in its factory. The company ships them on an 18-foot trailer to the site, where a builder puts them together based on the Acorn Deck plans.

The Grubbe house is three stories, 3,300 square feet, five bedrooms, four bathrooms, plus a long wish list.

“We wanted a longer living room and a wet bar adjacent to the kitchen. We pushed out the screen porch, added a room for our pool table and pushed up the ceiling to accommodate equipment in the exercise room. We made room for an inside hot tub and an office with two desks and bookcases,” she said.
