Efforts continue for tornado relief Pair of Batavia youngsters collecting toys for children in Washington

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Batavia youngsters Alyssa and Evan Jacobsen want to make Christmas a little brighter for those children in the small central Illinois community of Washington who have been displaced after a tornado tore through their city Nov. 17.

They have been collecting new toys and books for the children of Washington and plan to deliver them Friday.

“We have a whole basement full of toys,” said their mother, Kim Jacobsen. “My kids were concerned about what had happened and that the children might not have Christmas.”

Their effort is one of several local relief efforts for tornado victims in hard-hit Washington.

Coal City and Diamond also were affected.

Batavia resident Jim Kroning, 15, helped deliver much needed supplies to tornado victims, and Batavia Park District fitness director Kathy Freedlund headed up efforts to load two trucks of supplies for Washington tornado victims, including 125 cases of water, 29 boxes of blankets, 49 boxes of coats and 17 boxes of toys.

The tragic event hit home for the Batavia Park District.

The company bills itself as the nation’s largest provider of temporary housing for

displaced policyholders, and has lent assistance following other natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy.

The city of Geneva also is seeking the community’s help in collecting donations for tornado victims in Washington.

The city’s donation dropoff location will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through Dec. 9 at 77 N. First St. in downtown Geneva.

Requested items include toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, pain reliever medications, cold medicine, first-aid kits, reading glasses, plastic cups, plastic plates, plastic utensils, razors, pillows and blankets.

A caravan will deliver items to Washington on Dec. 11. The drop-off location will be closed during the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 28 and 29. The Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva also is accepting donations for tornado victims.

Toys to be collected during Electric Christmas Parade

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Those planning to attend the Electric Christmas Parade in St. Charles on Saturday are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to donate to the Toys for Kids program.

For the 30th year, volunteers with the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary will be collecting unwrapped gifts as the Rotary’s Toys for Kids parade float makes its way down Main Street. Saturday’s parade starts at 5:30 p.m.

Toys will be donated to The Salvation Army, which serves families in the Tri-Cities, as well as Campton Hills and Wayne.

In addition to the toy collection during the parade, about 30 collection boxes are set up throughout the Tri-Cities to collect unwrapped toys through Dec. 16.

Collection sites include all St. Charles School District 303 grade schools; Geneva High School; STC Capital Bank in St. Charles; St. Charles North High School; Second Street Tavern in St. Charles; the St. Charles Public Library; Jersey Mike’s in St. Charles, Geneva and Elgin; Hosanna Lutheran Church;

Saturday in front of the St. Charles Municipal Building at 2 E. Main St. Jim Wheeler, who started the annual toy collection, said the reason Toys for Kids partnered with The Salvation Army is because it serves all local families.

“This way we’re able to take care of the need in the Tri-Cities,” he said. “We have a lot of need within our area.”

Connie Barrera, program and ministries assistant with The Salvation Army, said the Toys for Kids program served about 500 local families last year. In addition to toys, Wheeler said families also can receive clothing and coats.

Wheeler said the need for toys grows each year, and he

said there’s always a need for gift items for teenagers.

He said $10 to $25 gift cards to places such as Meijer and Walmart – two companies that he said are big supporters of the annual toy and coat drives – are good gifts for teenagers.

Monetary donations also are being accepted, which Wheeler said he uses to buy clothing or gift cards.

“It’s just a matter of trying to find ways to help a family this time of year,” he said. “A lot of us are very fortunate that we’re also able to help others at the same time.”

The Electric Christmas Parade is part of the two-day Holiday Homecoming event in St. Charles, which kicks off Friday with the Lighting of the Lights at 5 p.m. at First Street Plaza in St. Charles.

Events continue Saturday with a a free holiday movie, “The Polar Express,” at the Arcada Theatre at 10:30 a.m.; a visit from Santa at the First Street Plaza from 1 to 4 p.m.; free horse-drawn sleigh rides at First Street Plaza from 1 to 3:30 p.m.; and the Electric Christmas Parade at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street.

All activities are free of charge.

AURORA – Aurora’s Festival of Lights will return for its seventh year, presented in partnership between the Rotary Club of Aurora and the city of Aurora. It is staged at Phillips Park, 1000 Ray Moses Drive in Aurora, and will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday starting Friday through Dec. 26. Last year’s festival set a record when almost 21,200 cars visited the four-week event. The festival is free, but the Rotary Club does accept donations that benefit local charities.

Aldermen recommend 6-month moratorium on nonretail uses

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen are considering a temporary ban on nonretail uses along Randall Road and other commercial districts.

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting recommended a six-month moratorium on accepting applications for certain non-retail uses in commercial districts such as Randall and Kirk roads.

Those uses would include banks and health care facilities.

While the moratorium is in place, staff would work with the City Council’s Community Development Committee to see what ordinance changes may be necessary to address the concerns about non-retail uses in commercial districts.

The recommendation will go to the full City Council.

As proposed, any uses listed as a conditional use in an annexation agreement or a planned development would also be subject to the moratorium.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke recently voiced concerns about nonsales-tax generat-

ing businesses trying to locate on Randall Road. He had voiced the need for the city to “put some constraints on how much nonsales-tax use we put on Randall Road.”

Earlier this month, aldermen approved amending a city ordinance to allow medical offices as a conditional use. Pacer Dental proposes to open a full-service dental practice in a 1,525-squarefoot building at 853 N. Randall Road, located near the Walmart store at the southwest corner of Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway.

Originally, medical and dental clinics were listed as prohibited uses.

In 2009 – at the request of the property owner, Aetna Development Corp. – the Batavia City Council approved an ordinance that removed medical and dental clinics from the list of prohibited uses, but no action was taken to add them to the list of allowed uses.

Schielke said he wasn’t concerned about Pacer Dental’s proposal because of its small size.

But he was worried about larger, nonsales-tax generating businesses trying to locate on Randall Road.

GENEVA – Richard A. Tredup, 80, of Geneva, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Delnor/ Cadence health hospital.

Richard was born Sept. 2, 1933, to Herman and Agnes (Anderson) Tredup in South Elgin.

He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1951. He went to Illinois State Normal University in Bloomington-Normal for a year and then decided to join the Army from May 1955 to May 1957, earning a merit badge as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division’s 503rd Infantry Regiment stationed in Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1963. While stationed in Germany he was able to visit other countries

in Europe.

He returned to the states and finished college at Illinois State Normal University, earning a Bachelor of Science in education. He taught business for a year at Elgin High School. He worked for his two brothers at Tredup’s Body Shop in South Elgin, but his main interest was being a Mr. Fix-it and enjoyed gardening and flowers. Other interests were fishing and taking a trip to Canada with his brothers.

He researched the places where his grandparents were born in Sweden and Germany with the help of his sister, which then led to the creation of a family history album, all to be treasured by the family.

Richard is survived by his brothers, Ed of South Elgin, Don of Montello, Wis., and a sister, Lois Burgess of Elburn; also, many close relatives and friends he’s known through his school years and work.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ralph of South Elgin and Ray of Barrington; also sisters-in-law, Lois, Patricia, Helen and Lorraine.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 30, at Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles. Burial will be private in Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin. The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Blackberry Township will negotiate new lease for ball fields

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – For 10 years, about 100 children in Elburn Youth Baseball played on McNair Field west of Route 47 on Bateman Road.

But this summer, the lease agreement with the owners expired, and township officials are working to get a new one in place for next season.

“I’m not sure why things got out of place,” Blackberry Township Trustee Harley Veldhuizen said. “We had a five-year contract and then renewed it every couple of

years.”

Township Supervisor Dennis Ryan said he did not allow the contract to expire and referred questions to Township Highway Commissioner Rodney Feece.

“We have a new supervisor here, and I took the initiative to help him out,” Feece said.

“We had a meeting Friday with the property owners, and everything went fairly well.

They were very receptive to a renewal.”

Feece said the board plans to discuss the terms of a new contract at its next meeting, which be at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at the township office, 43W390 Main Street Road, Elburn.

Michels said the roundabout will take the place of a stoplight intersection, which should help ease traffic in that area.

“The thought at first was to make Granart and Dugan a stoplight intersection,” he said. “As we talked about it, there’s a lot of traffic in the

morning and the evening, but during the day, there’s not a lot of traffic. People would have to wait for a stoplight to cycle through to let them go northbound. We thought, that’s pretty inefficient.”

Michels said if everything is approved, ground could break on the new roundabout as soon as next year and may be completed as soon as 2015.

“From a traffic perspective, we think it’s not just a fad. It’s the traffic design of the future,” Michels said.

“Once [drivers] use it and become accustomed to it, they’ll really like it.”

An open house is planned at the Sugar Grove Public Library to discuss the proposed roundabout Tuesday.

CHARLES – The liquor licensee at the Thirsty Fox Pub in St. Charles will have to pay $1,000 after two underage drinkers were served there last month, city officials announced Tuesday in a news release.

The St. Charles Liquor Commission announced the decision Tuesday following a hearing last week in which the owners pleaded guilty to the liquor violation, which occurred Oct. 18.

During the hearing last week, owners Samantha and Edward Stone said they were both busy that evening and

night of the regular Village Board meeting – trustees are slated to discuss and possibly take action on a proposed tax levy of 2.7 percent.

Michels said 1.7 percent of the proposed tax levy is allowed under the consumer price index, while the remaining 1 percent is from new residential and commercial construction.

Although it’s based on market values, the proposed tax levy would amount to about $7 more per year for an average household in Sugar Grove, Michels said.

“We’re raising it so that we can put money in our roads that are getting older, and sidewalks and other improvements that the village needs to make,” he said.

SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove officials are gearing up to improve the intersection at Granart and Dugan roads, which likely will include the installation of a roundabout.

Village President Sean Michels said the Illinois Department of Transportation will fund the upgrades in conjunction with another road construction project at Route 30 and Dugan Road.

Michels said the proposed roundabout was the result of a 2012 traffic study, which indicated that the area had heavy morning and evening traffic.

“It really surprised everybody when the study was done how much traffic there was day in and day out,” Michels said.

He said IDOT and the village are working with engineering consultant, Yorkvillebased HR Green, which proposed the roundabout.

GENEVA – The Geneva Police Department is asking for the public’s help to locate a resident reported missing, according to a news release the city issued Tuesday.

Jeffrey Tall- Jeffrey ey, 50, was last Talley seen about 6 p.m. Nov. 10 at Remington Boulevard and Veterans Parkway in Bolingbrook after being released from Adventist Bolingbrook Hospi-

tal, according to the city.

He reportedly has not been heard from since that day.

Talley is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds.

He has a thin build with brown hair, blue eyes and a brown stud earring in his left ear.

He was wearing a tan or blue sweatshirt and blue jeans, and might be carrying a red backpack.

A big day for small businesses Saturday after Thanksgiving provides a real boost for local shopping

hari Ralish has come to regard the Saturday after Thanksgiving as a significant date on her calendar.

About four years ago, Ralish opened Peaceful Parlour, a shop that sells teas and housewares at 212 S. Third St. in Geneva. That’s about as long as the effort called Small Business Saturday has existed.

Ralish said she has learned to embrace that concept as an opportunity to showcase how her place is different than the national chain stores that typically draw huge crowds on the Friday after Thanksgiving, a day known as Black Friday.

Ralish said she can offer tea samples. She said she will make the effort to track down whatever a customer might want. And, she said, customers often might be offered a “healing hug.”

“It’s a good time to demonstrate your special customer service, how you can go that extra mile,” Ralish said.

Small Business Saturday is approaching, coming two days after Thanksgiving. The event was founded by American Express in 2010, and it has grown in prominence each year.

If the Christmas shopping season is vital for big-box stores, it’s just as important for small businesses. According to websites associated with Small Business Saturday, supporting the event helps such businesses that “keep our community unique,” and mentions that “one-of-a-kind businesses build the character of our communities.”

The Tri-Cities area has many such shops. In the Kaneland area, the dynamic is different, but chamber of commerce officials say the idea of shopping local is just as important.

And some places in the Kaneland area do increased business during the holiday – for instance, Ream’s Elburn

A shopping tradition Gene Olmstead, who owns Olmstead’s TV & Appliances at 221 W. Wilson St. in Batavia, said Small Business Saturday is a big deal, but he also does what the big guys do.

He opens from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving night – something he said is unfortunate but necessary. And Black Fri-

day is a big deal for him, too.

He said national chains will have people lining up for the possibility of huge savings, but then there are very limited amounts available. He said he offers good deals, and he also can provide service that larger stores can’t.

“The Christmas season is a significant part of our business,” he said. “There’s no doubt about that.”

Cathy Villwock, who owns Kernel’s Gourmet Popcorn & More at 316 W. State St. in Geneva, said owners of small businesses are just more invested than those who are working at larger stores.

“I’m not saying big-box people don’t value the customers, but when you have this type of investment in your community, you take pride in it,” she said.

Ralish said it’s about customers who can “put their money where they feel good about something. …

Instead of a big-box store, they want to get it from someone they can trust.”

Shopping local in the Kaneland area The downtown shopping experience that exists in Geneva, St. Charles and Batavia doesn’t exist in the same way as in the western part of Kane County. Ream’s market is perhaps the most significant draw, but there are other ways to shop local.

Peg Bendowski, administrator for the Elburn Chamber of Commerce, said the village has much to offer. She said Elburn is “a small community where everyone is more like family to us.”

“We have our own Jewel, our own Walgreens, our own McDonalds,” she said. “We have Briana’s Pancake Cafe.

We can feed you early in the morning, and we can feed you late at night. We have antique stores and a hobby shop.

There’s a lot right on Route 47.”

“It’s the personal relationships here in town, both with the business owners and the customers,” Bendowski added. “Our Main Street has a lot

of each tree will be posted to the Batavia Park District’s Facebook page by Wednesday afternoon, and the tree with the most “likes” will officially be crowned the People’s Choice winner.

The winning organization also will be invited on stage to help light the ceremonial tree. The contest will run through noon Sunday.

“We thought this would add a fun element to the festival and entice organizations to get creative with their trees,” Miller said.

The festival will be presented by the Batavia Park District in partnership with the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Batavia MainStreet, the city of Batavia and the Batavia Police Department.

BATAVIA – Sunday’s Celebration of Lights Festival in downtown Batavia will shine even brighter if the Batavia Bulldogs win Saturday’s IHSA Class 6A football state championship game at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

The team will help kick off the Batavia Park District’s Celebration of Lights Festival at the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and North Island Avenue. The team will arrive at the Batavia Riverwalk at 5 p.m. and will be escorted by the Batavia Fire Department.

“Hopefully we will be celebrating a win on Saturday,” said Kari Miller, director of marketing and public relations for the Batavia Park District.

After the team arrives, the public is invited to head to the Wilson Street bridge for a special lighting ceremony of the “Peace on Earth” sign located on the pedestrian bridge.

“Local government can – and probably should – be a leader if you want private developers to do this,” Dreher said.

And, he said, research shows green infrastructure is generally cost effective, as some practices might have lower up-front costs or a longer life cycle.

“I think our challenge is getting information out there,” Dreher said.

The Kane County Planning Division began working on the Green Infrastructure Plan early last year. The Chicago Wilderness Sustainable Watershed Action Team also provided assistance on the project.

GENEVA – The Kane County Board is on the verge of adopting a plan that focuses on the county’s natural resources, including woodlands, wetlands and trails and parks.

It is expected to consider the proposed Kane County 2040 Green Infrastructure Plan on Dec. 10.

The document defines green infrastructure as “an interconnected system of natural areas and open spaces including woodlands, wetlands, trails and parks, which are protected and managed for the ecological values and functions they provide to people and wildlife. Green infrastructure supports native species; sustains air and water resources; and contributes to the

health and quality of life for people and communities.”

The proposed plan establishes Kane County’s existing green infrastructure and aims to lay the groundwork for green infrastructure planning at regional, community, neighborhood and site levels.

“It’s a tool that we can use for land use decisions you make as the County Board,” Mark VanKerkhoff, Kane County’s director of development, told the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday. “For municipalities, it’s really a vision they can choose to follow. Hopefully, they will.”

The rear window of a Toyota was reportedly smashed and a bag with school supplies valued at $200 was reported stolen. A window also was damaged on a Chevrolet, but no items were reported stolen.

• A battery-powered toy car valued at $100 was reported stolen Friday, Nov. 22, in the 200 block of North 15th Street, St. Charles.

• A man and woman reportedly stole a Butterball turkey with an estimated value of $20 to $25 from Jewel, 652 N. Kirk Road, while purchasing $58.63 in merchandise from the self-checkout lane. The man was described as white or Hispanic, balding, 5-foot-9 inches, heavy set and 40 to 45 years old.

Police reportedly found the car in Crystal Lake and police there interrogated suspects. Police noted the vehicle’s owner would be cited with leaving the car running unattended.

Golfview Lane, Sugar Grove, was reportedly burglarized between Sunday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 17. Tin cutters were apparently used to cut a hole in the maintenance building. Nothing was reported stolen.

• Ashley M. Filip, 25, of the 300 block of Carriage Hill Court, Sugar Grove, was arrested on multiple warrants out of DuPage County for failing to appear in court, as well as a Kane County warrant for failing to appear in court.

• A resident of the 0-100 block of Sugar Lane, Sugar Grove, reported Saturday, Nov. 16, that his vehicle was missing from the parking lot of his residence and that he had left his keys inside the vehicle. Police reportedly found the vehicle at a construction site.

• Paul J. Hensley, 32, of the 2300 block of Old Tavern Road, Lisle, turned himself in Saturday, Nov. 16, on a DuPage County warrant with a charge of telephone harassment.

FCC should change rules for cellphone use on an airplane THE WASHINGTON POST

Benning, Ga., with tears in my eyes as I said goodbye to my basic training company. I had enlisted into the Army’s 18X program, intent on making a career of serving our country in some of the world’s more unforgiving corners, but after just three months, multiple injuries to my legs had resulted in an unanticipated discharge.

I had enlisted for many reasons, but my primary motivator was that I believed – and continue to believe – in the ideals upon which this country was founded: religious freedom, political liberty, economic independence and the freedom for an individual to take risks to improve their lot in life and

The Federal Communications Commission may permit airlines to experiment with allowing passengers to use cellphones in flight, officials said last week.

The agency should do so, and airlines should get on with experimenting. A change in federal rules would not necessarily mean the ruination of air travel for all time.

We sympathize with anyone whose immediate reaction is to recoil at the prospect of having to listen for hours to a loudmouth with unlimited mobile minutes.

Air travel is uncomfortable enough. But the FCC’s move wouldn’t guarantee such an outcome. Rather, it would leave matters to airlines and their passengers, which is as it should be.

The proposal before the FCC would simply admit that there are no dangers or technical complications to transferring voice and data to and from mobile phones in the air, as long as the right technology is on board. Until now, the FCC worried that airborne mobile phone use would interfere with groundbased cell networks. Now that carriers in Europe and Asia have shown it can be done safely, the government’s telecommunications regulator has no sound reason to keep its restrictions. Its rules are outdated, and they should go.

Once gone, airlines and travelers would decide what to do. Carriers would have all sorts of possibilities to suit a range of passenger

preferences. They could allow a limited number of simultaneous phone conversations. They could let passengers retrieve data or send text messages but not talk. They could create quiet cabins or designate entire flights as no-phone zones, if that’s what customers want.

Airline staff would have all the leverage in enforcing the rules, because they would control the equipment that would connect passengers to cellphone networks.

Beyond the rules, costs also would constrain cellphone users; they would be charged roaming rates for their conversations.

There’s a distinct possibility that some carriers would not allow any mobile phone use. It is already legal for air passengers to make calls over onboard WiFi connections, but airlines don’t permit it.

Some travelers are waging a campaign against anything that might lead to more noise in cramped airplanes. Major airlines did not rush to celebrate the FCC’s announcement.

The immediate impact of the FCC ridding the country of its unnecessary rule, then, may well be small. Yet we hope that carriers explore their options to bring air travel into the 21st century, with all its pluses and minuses.

While some passengers mourn the disappearance of their last disconnected refuge, others will embrace the convenience of connection.

Either way, there’s no reason for the government to play referee.

past was not. They, too, were immigrants, and while their road may not have been smooth, they were eventually welcomed into our society and became productive, prosperous citizens.

So, as we sit down to enjoy our dinners with our families this Thanksgiving, let us be grateful for all of the opportunities that we have been blessed with, simply by being born in the United States.

Let us also be grateful that someone in our family’s history took a risk and immigrated to this land of opportunity. And let us never cease to be a shining beacon on a hill for all of those around the world who seek life, liberty and happiness.

“That’s pretty much our main offense,” Ludwig said. “Coach told us to

get out and run.”

The Bengals answered Miller’s outburst with 11 unanswered points to again make things interesting. They finally closed the gap to 56-54 on a 3-pointer by Myles Ward with 14 seconds remaining in the game.

The North Stars had some difficulty breaking the ensuing press, but finally got the ball to Tyler DeMoss for an uncontested layup with three seconds left. Plainfield East coach Branden Adkins said the Bengals were actually trying to foul in the closing seconds, but couldn’t get a call from an official.

“Our defensive rotations weren’t very good,” Adkins said. “They got a lot of lane penetration and our help side was not there when it was supposed to be and if it was, they got caught up on back-side screens. They were skipping the basketball and knocking down shots.”

Jake Callaghan scored 7 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the North Stars, who will face North Lawndale at 6:30 p.m. today as the tournament continues.

“They’re really, really hungry to have some success and earn some respect,” Poulin said of his players.

“They know it’s not just going to be given to them.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North is eager to prove that it shouldn’t be taken lightly this boys basketball season and that showed in the early moments of Tuesday’s season opener.

The North Stars jumped out to a 13-2 lead against Plainfield East and withstood a couple of runs by the Bengals to hold on for a 58-54 victory in the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament at St. Charles East.

“The early cushion, we were able to hold on to that – just barely – and pull out the win,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “I thought we started with good energy. … They’re anxious to let people know we can play.”

Jake Ludwig helped spark the North Stars’ early run with a pair of 3-pointers. He went on to finish with 21 points.

“Nobody really thinks we’re going to do good this year, so it’s nice to go out and get a win,” Ludwig said. “We wanted to start fast. Over the summer, that’s what we did when we had all our guys. Coach just said play like we did in the summer and we did.”

North led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter and was up 29-19 at the half. The highlight of the opening 16 minutes for the North Stars was a one-handed slam by 6-foot-6 senior Garrett Johnson on a put-back.

Johnson rotated in the middle with classmates Camden Cotter and Chase Gianacakos and junior Brendan McCarthy.

“When we look at the statistics, that’s just one guy,” Poulin said.

“We’re going to run them through the entire game, two or three minutes at a time. Add those stats up and that’s what our center got us.”

What their center did for the North Stars on Tuesday night was a respectable 8 points and 11 rebounds, including eight boards from Johnson.

‘All In’ not just an expression for Bulldogs “All In” is the Batavia football program’s 2013 slogan, as anyone who takes even a quick peek into the Twitter universe can attest.

Batavia football coach Dennis Piron often speaks of the synergy between Bulldogs players, coaches, parents and the Batavia community, and proof that it is no empty platitude has come in resounding fashion this season.

After the Bulldogs defeated Lake Forest on a slick afternoon Nov. 16 at Bulldog Stadium, Piron said the level of detail Bulldogs coaches drill down to is “almost embarrassing,” all the way to perfecting a system for keeping footballs dry during the course of a rainy afternoon.

That might sound like overkill, but it’s also symbolic of the huge investments – physical, emotional and even financial – that so many in and around the program have made to allow the Bulldogs to become the program that they are.

This year’s Bulldogs are playing for the IHSA Class 6A state championship Saturday against Richards, but Batavia is 33-3 in Piron’s three years as head coach, advancing deep into November in two of those three seasons.

There have been many impressive performances during that three-year stretch, but a case can be made that Saturday’s 38-6 thumping of Rockford Boylan tops the list. It was a complete performance by a complete team, and nothing less is required to go on the road against an undefeated team in a state semifinal and flirt with a running clock.

Batavia has two all-staters in seniors Michael Moffatt and Anthony Scaccia, but football is not a sport that lends itself to two guys

carrying a team. Fortunately for Moffatt and Scaccia, they don’t have to.

Batavia is strong and deep at each positional group, with the offensive line perhaps providing the best example.

The Bulldogs lost junior guard Mitch Krusz to a season-ending injury late in the regular season. Piron said at the time Krusz arguably was the Bulldogs’ top-performing o-lineman, so it was a major loss.

Yet Piron still had enough confidence in his line to go for it on fourth down on multiple occasions against Boylan, and that faith was rewarded, with a pair of deep breath-inducing measurements from the chain gang extending Batavia drives.

The Bulldogs also had a rash of key defensive injuries in the middle of the regular season but kept trucking, showing that their second-string players are worthy of starting in their own right.

Cultivating depth in a

football program is tricky but essential. It’s about instilling a programwide sense of offseason commitment and shared responsibility in a team’s success, even with no assurances of playing time.

In Batavia, that process begins early, so it’s fitting that the Bulldogs will share their Thanksgiving morning practice space with Batavia Youth Football players, who are invited to compete in “Turkey Bowl” games at the BHS practice fields.

Community imprints are as ingrained in Batavia’s program as are the paw prints on the Bulldogs’ helmets.

That “All In” mindset for Batavia football starts early, runs deep and, Saturday, might just be enough to push the Bulldogs all the way up the mountaintop.

That’s been kind of our focus, believe it or not, to not give up that many points per game and that many layups. So we still have to figure it out.”

The first half went about as poorly as it could have for the Saints, with turnovers,

missed shots and defensive struggles snowballing to produce a 20-point halftime hole.

East turned things around in the second half, scoring 37 of its 48 points over the final two quarters. Amanda Hilton contributed 10 of her team-high 13 points in the second half, leading the offensive rejuvenation for the Saints.

But Stevenson kept doing

what it had done to build its big lead, remaining very aggressive by completing fullcourt passes for easy layups and leaning heavily on Taylor Buford, who led all scorers with 23 points.

“She’s a great player, tough on the drive, definitely can take it to the basket,” Hilton said. “She showed us that we need to work on that.

So against teams that drive a lot, we need to work on how to stop them getting into the paint and stop them from driving so they can shoot the outside shot. Great player, she knew what she was doing, she led the team well.

Props to her.”

The loss is the third in four games for the Saints so far in the tournament, with one game remaining Friday versus Trinity. Both Drumtra and Hilton admired the

level of competition in the tournament, and said that though the record isn’t where they want it to be, it’s taught the team a lot.

“We’ve been in this tournament year after year after year,” Drumtra said. “We kind of enter it with the mind set that it’s going to show us what we need to work on, and it’s certainly done that.

We’ve played very tough competition. That’s one of the things that we know in this tournament, that there’s no easy games. So we want to see what we need to work on, kind of get ready because conference starts the week after Thanksgiving. It’s always been a good eye-opener for us.

“Going into conference, we have a much better idea of where we’re at.”

The Vikings shot a dismal 9 for 52 from the field in a 48-37 loss to Downers Grove North in the third round of the Rachel Bach Tournament.

Geneva turned in a great defensive effort with strong rebounding, shot blocking and steals but could not convert those opportunities into points.

“We couldn’t score. It was frustrating,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said. “I said to the girls that they worked so hard on defense and

The Vikings scored their first basket three minutes into the game on a bucket underneath by junior Abby Novak. The score was quickly answered by North’s Jaida Travascio-Green. The sophomore, who led all scorers with 12 points, drained a 3 to give her team a 10-3 advantage.

Geneva trailed 16-7 and the end of the first quarter.

“We had our backs to the wall all during the game,” Meadows said. “We started out flat. We only had 16 points at the half – we usually score that in a quarter. We just never put it together.”

in six points two minutes into the second quarter, 1812, on a Morgan Seberger 3-pointer – the only Geneva 3 of the evening – and free throws by Madeline Dunn (nine points). Downers Grove North responded with an 11-4 run to end the half with a 29-16 lead.

Geneva managed only three baskets during the third quarter and trailed 3725 starting the final period.

Peyton Winters scored 11 points for Downers Grove North while teammate Sarah Costello chipped in 10.

Geneva returns to Glenbard East tonight to take on Glenbard South in the tournament finale. Tipoff is 6 p.m.

SCHAUMBURG – With the second half about to begin, five Stevenson Patriots stood on the court ready to resume play, but St. Charles East was nowhere to be found. The Saints were late to the second half.

It was only by a little bit, but East showing up late was a pretty fitting image.

Through the first 16 minutes of the team’s fourth game of the Schaumburg Tournament on Tuesday night, the Saints struggled mightily. It wasn’t until the second half that things began to turn around, but by then it was, well, too late, as East went on to fall to Stevenson by a final score of 71-48.

On a cold day Saturday in Rockford, he absorbed a heavy workload, kept the chains moving and held onto the football throughout the Bulldogs’ 38-6 win, which advanced Batavia to Saturday’s Class 6A state championship game against Richards. Scaccia, this week’s Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab after the game.

The following is an edited transcript: It’s got to be at least a little surprising to have beaten Boylan [by such a wide margin], right?

We’ve been talking about it all week, how we’ve kind of been expecting to be here, but it’s still surreal. It’s unbelievable, but with the practice we had

throughout the week, I wasn’t really surprised. We did everything exactly how we did in practice.

How’d that frozen ground feel throughout the game?

It was rough, but I just had to adjust with the offensive line, just follow behind them.

How about a thought on this being the first group to get Batavia back to a state championship game since ’06. No matter what happens, that’s a pretty big accomplishment, right?

Absolutely. We’ve been looking forward to this since eighth grade. We won our middle school championship, and ever since then we’ve just been talking about making it here, and it’s finally here.

WEST CHICAGO – The Geneva boys basketball team squandered a 14-point lead against King on Tuesday, dropping the West Chicago Tournament matchup, 68-66.

The Vikings (1-1) led by 10 points about midway through the fourth quarter before poor late-game execution allowed the game to slip away.

Junior Nate Navigato scored a career-high 27 points for the Vikings, but Geneva committed 29 turnovers on the night, 22 of which came in the second half.

“It wasn’t just guys with [bad] passes, it was guys not meeting passes – it was little things that we hope a veteran team would just say, ‘I know how to play the game of basketball,’ and we didn’t have that attitude,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said.

“The sad part is there were a lot of positives for us. They went to a 1-3-1 and we just destroyed their 1-3-1. It was just unbeliev-

able; we killed them with our sets, we were running great sets tonight, but then you factor in crunch time, it was turnover, turnover, turnover, giving them layups at the other end, fouling them, sending them to the line. It’s really hard to win a basketball game when you’re letting a team shoot 27 free throws, and really hard to win a basketball game when you have 29 turnovers.”

Ralston also said the Vikings “need to rethink what we’re doing defensively” after allowing 60 or more points in each of their first two games. Geneva continues tournament play today against Lake Zurich.

Sycamore Tournament: Burlington Central defeated Dundee-Crown, 64-55, in its season opener behind 18 points from Duncan Ozburn and 10 points from Sean Fitzgerald. Rockets coach Brett Porto said the 6-foot-9 Ozburn also had “at least” five blocked shots in the win.

Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vazquez focuses on country from afar

By DAVID MONTGOMERY The Washington Post To get a clear view of one’s country and its neuroses, sometimes a writer has to leave it. James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway knew this. And so does Juan Gabriel Vasquez, who left his native Bogota for Paris at 23, in the mid-1990s, to become a novelist and, not incidentally, to get away from an upbringing amid the bombings and assassinations of Colombia’s drug war.

It took a while to discover that the country he left behind was his true subject, and even longer to realize that it would fall to him – and a few others seeking their own light in the awesome literary shadow of their countryman Gabriel Garcia Marquez – to find a way to turn those decades of strife into art.

“I had to spend six years living abroad to find how to write about Colombia, how to deal with the country in fiction, which had always been tricky,” Vasquez said.

“At first Colombia was this dark place for me which I didn’t understand, which I had left when I was very young, so in a way it was far away from me. I felt I didn’t have any moral right to deal with it in fiction.

“Then I realized that the fact that I didn’t understand my country was the best reason to write about it – that fiction, for me, is a way of asking questions. I think of it as the Joseph Conrad approach. You write because there’s a dark corner, and you believe that fiction is a way to shed some light.”

As he spoke, Vasquez was sipping coffee this week from a porcelain demitasse cup in a wood-paneled salon at the Colombian ambassador’s residence, in Dupont Circle. Despite some unsparing truths in his novel “The Sound of Things Falling” – albeit narrated with an expat’s profound affection – the Colombian government views Vasquez as a cultural ambassador and includes his visit to Washington in a “plan to promote Colombia abroad.” At 40, the writer already is an international literary superstar.

Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian novelist and Nobel Prize winner, has called Vasquez “one of the most original new voices of Latin American literature.”

Vasquez gave a reading at the Library of Congress this week and was also interviewed for inclusion in the library’s Archive of Hispanic Literature on Tape.

The archive includes recordings by such giants as Garcia Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Gabriela Mistral and Octavio Paz. “It’s a big thing for me, from an emotional point of view,” Vasquez said, “to be in the same collection as those guys who made me want to become a writer in the first place.”

After vowing in interviews to forever remain a foreigner, as the perfect detached existential state for a writer to inhabit, Vasquez recently moved back to Bogota. But not permanently, he insists.

“I was able to move back to Bogota because after 16 years of living abroad, it had again become a strange place,” he said. “It had ceased to be the place I knew when I was 23. It was strange that I could move back there and still feel this tension, which is what I like – to feel uncomfortable, to feel that I don’t wholly grasp the place.”

The place is different, perhaps more settled. Drug lord Pablo Escobar has been dead 20 years, and his style of urban warfare has subsided. The other great source of civil strife, the world’s longest-running guerrilla war in the Colombian jungles, is now the subject of

peace talks.

In the second of his four novels to date (he disowns two earlier apprentice works), “The Secret History of Costaguana,” Vasquez pokes a little fun at that overindulged magical real style pioneered by Garcia Marquez.

“This is not one of those books where the dead speak or where beautiful women ascend to the sky, or priests rise above the ground after drinking a steaming potion,” Vasquez’s narrator announces.

He means no disrespect of his literary forebears, who are among his heroes.

Separating himself from the omnipresent influence of Garcia Marquez would not be difficult, Vasquez understood, if he simply remained true to himself.

“I realized from very early on that he had nothing to teach me from the point of view of method and technique and strategy, even though ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ is one of the reasons I became a writer,” Vasquez said. “Rather, I had to look for lessons in Conrad or Dostoyevsky, or the contemporary writers I love – Philip Roth, Don DeLillo. All these people do what I like to do, which is try to explore the crossroads between the public world – history and politics – and the private individual.”

By his third novel, “The Sound of Things Falling,” he felt ready to take on the period of Escobar’s reign of terror in the 1980s and early 1990s.

“You can say that growing up, I never knew a peaceful country,” he said. “So, I left Colombia in a way with this traumatic feeling of trying to run away from that state of things. And maybe that’s why I never tried to deal with that in fiction.”

His most recent work is a novella, called “Reputations,” about a political cartoonist confronting his past. It’s not yet available in English. Meanwhile, in the two years since “The Sound of Things Falling” was published in Colombia, there has been a spate of documentaries and television shows on those violent times, even a telenovela about Escobar.

“You have to ask why, 30 years after all that began, they are just popping up everywhere,” Vasquez said. “The reason is that we haven’t got to the bottom of that. We haven’t really understood why that happened, what the consequences of those years are. So, we tell stories.”

Studies so far show statins offer big benefits, small risks Dear Doctor K: Lately I’ve been hearing more about the side effects of statins. For example, I’ve heard that they increase the risk of muscle problems and diabetes.

How do I know if they’re still worth the risk?

Dear Reader: I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. No drug is 100 percent safe. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take one if you need it. But you should continually weigh the risks and benefits. When it comes to cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, the benefits are proven. But your concerns are worth a closer look.

Statins reduce high levels of “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. Bad cholesterol can lead to heart attacks, stroke and death from heart disease. Whatever your risk when you start taking a statin, the drug can lower it substantially.

What about the side effects? In large clinical trials, up to one in 10 people taking a statin reported muscle aches, pains or weakness.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the statin caused the muscle symptoms, but it’s worth noting.

If you feel new muscle symptoms after starting a statin, tell your doctor. He or she may advise you to stop taking it, wait a month or two, and then try taking it

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff again. If the muscle troubles return, your doctor can change the dose or type of statin, or take you off the drug.

There also is a rare side effect in which statins trigger a rapid and potentially life-threatening breakdown in muscle cells. It’s rare enough that I’ve never seen a patient with that problem.

You also mentioned the connection between statins and diabetes. Statins can raise blood sugar levels – potentially enough to trigger a new diagnosis of diabetes. On the other hand, doctors frequently prescribe statins for people with diabetes. They do this to reduce the increased risk of heart disease associated with the disease.

A recently published study indicated that long-term use of statins may increase a person’s risk of developing cataracts. That study requires confirmation from other studies before it can be accepted. Even if it proves to be true, you would have to weigh the risk of getting cataracts against

the risk of heart disease. Cataracts that interfere with your vision can be easily corrected by surgery. The consequences of heart disease can be heart failure and sudden death.

Another cause for concern has been that statins may cause memory loss. But large clinical trials have not shown this to be the case.

If you’re still concerned, talk to your doctor about your personal risks and benefits. And remember that statins are only part of the equation. Whether or not you take a statin, don’t ignore healthy eating and regular exercise. They actually offer you more potent protection against heart disease than statins do.

I know some people who have “relaxed” their attention to diet and exercise when they start taking statins. They think taking a pill each day protects them against heart disease and stroke, so why bother with diet and exercise? That’s a dangerously wrong conclusion.

Two unusual books came out this year. First, “Bridge Crosswords” by Jeff Chen (Master Point Press) is what it sounds like: 52 crosswords with a bridge theme, although most of the clues are not bridge related. The crosswords vary in complexity from easy (Monday New York Times level) to challenging (Thursday NYT difficulty).

And you will probably enjoy “Bridge Table or What’s Trump Anyway?” by Maggy Simony (Booklocker.com). The author is 93 years old and looks primarily at social bridge, but many famous players are mentioned.

There is only one deal included – see today’s diagram. It purportedly cost John Bennett of Kansas City his life on Sept.

29, 1929. He and his wife, Myrtle, had been playing a “friendly” session against neighbors Myrna and Charles Hoffman. It first appeared in The Bridge World magazine and is surely an invention.

After a very light opening bid, an overcall and a thin jump to four spades, West led the diamond ace, then shifted to the club jack. Declarer won in his hand and took the percentage play in trumps, cashing the king and ace. Now he had to go down. Mrs. Bennett, realizing that her husband could have won 10 tricks, made some uncomplimentary comments about his ancestry.

Mr. Bennett leant across the table and slapped his wife. She went into the bedroom, came out with the family gun, and killed her husband.

However, she walked free from the court because she was charged with murder one, which requires the crime to be premeditated, which this clearly was not.

She should have been charged with manslaughter.

GP Raymeister highlights event KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – When GP Raymeister – a horse that is the star at Grand Prix Equestrian in Maple Park – had some problems with his left eye, several options were explored.

Yvonne Barteau, the trainer at KYB Dressage, which makes its home at Grand Prix, said the beloved Ray was suffering from glaucoma, and there were two choices, kill the glaucoma, which also would cause Ray not to have vision in the eye, or remove the eye completely.

She said the choice was “the lesser of the two options.”

Ray kept the eye, and with the procedure done, she said he is much more relaxed.

“He’s back and working at the top of his game,” she said.

And that’s saying a lot.
