St. Charles man cited after crash with sheriff’s deputy

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man was cited Monday after a two-car crash involving a Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputy, St. Charles police said.

The collision happened about 6:30 p.m. Monday in downtown St. Charles when

a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta traveling west on Prairie Street failed to yield to a 2014 Ford police car traveling south on Second Street, Deputy Chief David Kintz said.

“This is a tough intersection because there’s buildings right up to the corner,” he said.

Fire damages former Aurora Sportsmen’s Club building in SG

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A Wednesday morning fire at the former Aurora Sportsmen’s Club in Sugar Grove remains under investigation, Sugar Grove Fire Chief William Perkins said.

The Sugar Grove Fire Department was dispatched at 8:57 a.m.

Wednesday to the former club site in the 400 block of Bliss Road in Sugar Grove, Perkins said.

Fire crews found a fire in one of the buildings, and it was not under control until about 11:30 a.m.

Wednesday, if not later, Perkins said.

“The majority of the roof had caved in,” he said.

“It required a defensive attack.”

There were large amounts of overgrowth on the property that made it difficult to maneuver fire hose lines around the building, which sits on a

hillside with a walkout on the lower level, Perkins said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the cause of the fire had not been determined.

Fire crews had to break a lock on the perimeter of the property to get to the fire, and no one was found in the building, Perkins said.

An estimated cost of the damage was not available Wednesday afternoon, but Perkins said the building likely will be considered a total loss. He was not certain what, if any, contents were inside the building.

No injuries were reported during the incident, Perkins said.

Fire crews from Aurora, Big Rock, Bristol-Kendall, Elburn, Montgomery, North Aurora, Oswego and the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force assisted Sugar Grove during the fire.

The Aurora Sportsmen’s Club operates out of a property in Waterman, Illinois.

Lt. Pat Gengler of the sheriff’s office wrote in an email the deputy was responding to Batavia to assist the fire department with a subject having a heart attack.

Both the deputy and the other driver, Robert Giffey, were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with minor injuries, Kintz said.

Giffey, 45, of the 1400 block of South Seventh Avenue, was cited with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, Kintz said.

He said both vehicles were towed from the scene.

The guest speaker is Gary L. Urwiler, executive director of Mooseheart Child City & School.

He will talk about the history and future of Mooseheart and his life there as a student and administrator. Urwiler has been the executive director at Mooseheart since 2012. He has held a number of positions throughout his career at Mooseheart, including interim director, dean of students, athletic director, camp director, superintendent of education and principal of the Mooseheart Pre K-12 grade school system – and as Mooseheart’s head football coach for the past 16 seasons.

St. Charles North alumnus makes ‘The Voice’ Top 10

graduate continues to win viewers over on NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition.

Jeffery Austin, 24, became one of the show’s Top 10 final-

ists during its live Tuesday broadcast.

Austin, who graduated from St. Charles North High School in 2009, performed

singer Robyn’s song “Dancing On My Own” on Monday during the broadcast of the show.

“Thank you EVERYONE for voting me through again to the #VoiceTop10!” Austin tweeted Tuesday after it was revealed he would advance.

Austin, Korin Bukowski and Braiden Sunshine on Tuesday also performed the New Radicals’ song “You Get What You Give” with their

“Voice” coach and No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani.

Evan McKeel, a singer on “Voice” coach Pharrell Williams’ team, was eliminated Tuesday.

Each week the contestants who receive the lowest number of votes will be eliminated from the show.

The winner of the show, which resumes airing Nov. 30, will receive a recording contract.

The Fox and The Turkey Races to benefit Batavia food pantry

eneva resident Brady Ahern is going for the win this Thanksgiving morning.

The 11-year-old came in two seconds behind his brother, Jaden, for a thirdplace finish during the 2014 Youth Mile run at The Fox and The Turkey Races in Batavia. This year, his brother is 13 and has aged out of the 12-and-younger event.

“You have to start off fast and end fast. ... It’s just a fun race,” Brady Ahern said.

The Aherns are one of several families that make The Fox and The Turkey Races in Batavia part of their Thanksgiving holiday tradition, race director Tom Spadafora said.

This year, up to 3,000 people are expected to participate in the races, which are organized by the Fox River Trail Runners.

Thanksgiving is the largest participatory day of running events in the U.S., Spadafora said.

People have time to run with their families and look forward to burning calories before they sit down to a heavy meal later in the day, Spadafora said.

The annual races also benefit the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, he said. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than $7,500 in monetary donations were collected through the Fox River Trail Runners website, www.foxrivertrailrunners.org.

Brady Ahern’s mother, Amy, said she likes the food drive effort and getting some exercise on Thanksgiving.

She and her family have run the race for several years, including before 2008, when the race had a predictor format.

Runners had to make a close prediction of their actual finishing time to win, Spadafora said. In 2009, the organizers began to give awards by age categories.

The Ahern and Ball families said they also enjoy seeing the spectators along the route in the neighborhoods.

Residents on the route are notified of the race’s morning schedule, and some take the opportunity to cheer on the runners, Spadafora said.

Ball said most of his family runs together during the event at the same pace, including Katherine, who always has run the 4-mile race.

“This is an opportunity to do something fun together and support a nice charity, too,” Jeff Ball said.

In what County Board members described as a first step, the Finance and Budget Committee on Wednesday considered proposed changes to the county’s credit card policy, as well as potential goals

The topic arose during last month’s Finance and Budget Committee meeting. At that time, members said they were upset the coroner avoided the standard approval process for promotional items and learned his monthly limit is $25,000.

Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, who balked at that figure last month, mentioned it during Wednesday’s discussions and noted two of the coroner’s deputies also are issued

“I want to decrease those amounts to $5,000,” she said, adding larger limits should be reserved for the state’s attorney’s office, sheriff’s office and chief judge.

The committee did not make any determinations Wednesday. Rather, it heard suggestions from Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick and Auditor Terry Hunt.

Hunt said there are valid uses for the P-cards and specific situations might require

credit cards over other forms of payment.

The county has about 90 credit cards issued, he said, and fewer than half of them have single-transaction limits.

He suggested reducing the number of credit cards by half, setting single-transaction limits for every card, and reducing the monthly limit by 90 percent, or to $75,000.

Russell has since reimbursed the county with a personal check.

CHARLES – The University of Illinois Extension celebrated its Kane County master gardeners with an awards and appreciation ceremony last month. The volunteer group has completed more than 3,500 hours of service in 2015, according to a news release.

“University of Illinois Extension appreciates everything our amazing volunteers do to make the Master Gardener program a success for our Kane County communities,” Sarah Fellerer, the master gardener program coordinator, stated in the release. “Master gardeners share their own time and talents through the Master Gardener help desk, the Idea Gar-

den, the Sherman Community Garden and other community gardens, service projects and workshops throughout the year.”

The awards event recognized both new master gardeners, as well as those with several years of service, Fellerer stated. Seven interns were elevated to the official rank of certified master gardener in Kane County – Pau-

la Altekruse, Leah Beck and Sherri Nelson of St. Charles; Ann Carlsen of Batavia; Pat Engel of Geneva; and Susanne Everson and Susan Swing, both of Elgin. Each received a certificate and name tag to commemorate the achievement.

“Master gardener interns are required to complete 60 hours of training and at least 60 hours of volunteer time, including many at the help desk and Idea Garden,” Fellerer stated in the release. “It

More than turkey and parades For the second year in a row, my column has fallen on Thanksgiving Day, that day of spirited parades, turkey dinners and time with friends and family. I’m fortunate to have the opportunity – for the second time – to share my thoughts on why this particular day is so special.

Let’s face it, most of the world is already in full-out Christmas mode. With 93.9 blaring full-time holiday tunes on the radio and every store displaying its seasonal merchandise, the rush toward Christmas starts as early as Halloween. Many people even begin their Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving night – I guess those deals can’t wait the extra couple hours! And who ends the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade but Santa Claus himself?

It almost feels like Thanksgiving has become a forgotten holiday, one that gets pushed aside in favor of reindeer, mistletoe and candy canes.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Christmas. It’s my favorite time of year, and I’m just as excited for its arrival as anyone else. But Thanksgiving is a significant and special holiday, one that deserves more recognition than it gets.

From preschool onward, I learned the Thanksgiving story every November. We’ve all heard it: The Pilgrims were struggling to survive in their new land and were assisted by some friendly Native Americans who gave them food and assistance. It’s a simple story, but clearly a lasting one, as the ideals celebrated on that first Thanksgiving still apply today. Sure, 21st century Americans may not be worried about having enough corn to last the winter, but we still have challenges we are able to endure with perseverance and the support of others. With every Thanksgiving, we celebrate all that we have to be grateful for.

Sometimes, it’s extremely difficult to express gratitude, especially when it seems like there is nothing to be thankful for. Trying circumstances can be overwhelming; respite can

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel feel far away. Trust me, I’ve been there. But days like Thanksgiving show the importance of being grateful, even in the midst of trials. Because, trust me, we really do have so much to be thankful for. Especially in light of the horrific attacks in Paris a couple weeks ago, I’m reminded how privileged I am to live in a safe country, surrounded by people who love me and a supportive community.

The list of everything I’m thankful for could go on and on, and I think that’s a beautiful thing. Shouldn’t our gratitude for everything we’re blessed with be abundant, and not just on Thanksgiving? My family keeps a “Thanksgiving Journal,” where each person writes down the main things they are thankful for that year. What’s interesting is even though my specific objects of gratefulness differ from year to year, they still reflect an appreciation for everything around me and show how important it is to participate in the simple yet meaningful act of giving thanks.

My mom likes to say that Thanksgiving is her favorite holiday because no one can argue with it. And when you think about it, it’s so true – who can find fault in putting a day aside just to be thankful? While society associates the fourth Thursday in November with pumpkin pie and Pilgrims, I prefer to correlate it with its very name: the giving of thanks. So, instead of rushing to go holiday shopping the minute the turkey’s eaten, I encourage you to stop and reflect on everything you’ve been blessed with, because there is certainly plenty. Happy Thanksgiving!

One way restaurants can help fight child obesity

By PETER ORSZAG Bloomberg View Until my older children tired of the ritual, I would take them to the Silver Diner in Rockville, Maryland, every Saturday morning. A few years ago, we noticed a drastic change in the menu, with more emphasis on healthy food. A new analysis of the change published in Health Affairs backs up our family’s experience and suggests that it had substantial effects on the food children ordered.

In the study, items on the children’s menu were considered healthy if they met the “Kids Livewell” criteria. Before the menu change, 3 percent of all entrées ordered from the kids’ menu were healthy ones, and french fries accounted for 57 percent of side dishes. (My children,

truth be told, were doing nothing to improve these depressing statistics.)

In April 2012, the Silver Diner introduced more healthy options and highlighted them on the menu.

Kids still could choose fries and other traditional options, but the menu was now designed to encourage healthier ones.

The result? Forty-six percent of orders were for healthy entrées, and french fries dropped to 22 percent of bundled side dishes. These changes have persisted through the most recent assessment, covering late 2014 and early 2015. In addition, revenue rose at the Silver Diner somewhat faster than at other leading family dining chains. (The analysis was funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, where I serve on the board. The Silver

Diner did not provide any financial support.)

While this may not definitively prove the power of changing the menu, it is highly suggestive. And given that childhood obesity rates in the U.S. remain stuck at 17 percent, this matters.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has pledged an additional $500 million to tackle childhood obesity. But money alone isn’t sufficient. No magic silver bullet exists to reduce childhood obesity.

Instead, progress will have to come from the accumulation of many small changes, like the Silver Diner’s new menu.

ST. CHARLES – A woman wanted by St. Charles police for more than a decade on identity theft charges is due in court next month, according to Kane County court records.

Starya L. Hooper, 43, of the 1000 block of North Leamington Avenue, Chicago, has been charged Starya L. with four felo- Hooper nies: financial identity theft, financial exploitation of an elderly person, theft and theft by deception, records show.

Documents indicate the charges stem from a period of several months beginning in December 2001 and ending in August 2002.

Hooper used to work at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles and opened a credit card account at The Avenue, a plus-size clothing store, in a patient’s name but had the credit card delivered to her house, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said.

After making initial payments, Hooper accrued an unpaid balance of $885.68, Kintz said.

He said she also obtained the patient’s Bank One card and PIN and made three separate withdraws totaling $430.40.

A warrant for her arrest was issued in January 2003, but it wasn’t served until Sunday, records show.

“She basically disappeared,” Kintz said, noting St. Charles police picked her up in Cook County.

Hooper is expected in court Dec. 16 for a status hearing.

After owning Bistro Thai, which was originally in St. Charles and then in Geneva, with his wife, he saw an opportunity to open a craft beer establishment.

“I felt like people were getting tired of that yellow, fizzy beer that didn’t have much flavor,” With said.

And, thus, Gammon Coach House was born.

Located at 3 S. Batavia Ave. in Batavia, Gammon Coach House celebrated its four-year anniversary in September.

Along with partner Ken Robertson, With joins a knowledgeable staff when it comes to craft beer.

The hours at Gammon Coach House are 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

For those who don’t drink craft beer often – or aren’t familiar with the array of tastes – With said the Gammon Coach House menu and staff are accommodating.

“If you don’t know anything about craft beer, this is a great place for you,” With said. “The staff will give you tastes and samples of different beers, but will also talk with you about which kinds of beers you like. It helps you get more of an idea about what the craft beer movement is all about.”

But the craft beer aficionado, who lives in Elgin, equated craft beer to wine in that “you’re going to choose something that goes well with your meal ... like wine.”

Beyond the vast amount of liquid options at Gammon Coach House, With couldn’t help but praise the restaurant’s burgers, which he said many customers do. Sandwiches, soup, salads, pizzas, appetizers and other items round out the menu.

During his time owning Gammon Coach House, With said he has worked with a number of breweries, including

Penrose Brewing Company in Geneva, to help get their product out to consumers and provide start-up assistance. With did mention that an IPA from Penrose was one that flew off of the shelf – or, in this case, out of the tap – very quickly.

But aside from a love of craft beer, With has always had pride in the main reason for opening Gammon Coach House.

“Our philosophy has always been craft beer and comfort food,” With said.

“But beyond that, this isn’t a place that you’re going to walk into and no one will talk to you or greet you. People engage you here, and it’s really turned into that place with a nice little neighborhood feel that I envisioned from the beginning.”

Whatever it is, chances are that Randall’s Pancake House in South Elgin has it.

Located at 305 Randall Road (near the Jewel-Osco), Randall’s Pancake House offers both breakfast and lunch and is open from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week.

According to the restaurant’s website, www.pancakehousesouthelgin. com, the key word at Randall’s Pancake House is “family.”

“We are a family-owned, family-operated, family friendly restaurant in South Elgin ... ,” the site states. “Our restaurant offers a quiet atmosphere, with a nice, warming decor that will make you feel right at home, surrounded by family! Our staff is friendly and accommodating, too, and will make you feel completely welcome!”

That has been the case each time I have eaten at Randall’s Pancake House.

On my most recent trip – on a sunny, crisp day in November – I was greeted

midway between our meal. She also appreciated that our waitress stopped by the table often to refill our coffee cups, describing her as “friendly.”

I liked the German take on the eggs Benedict. The bacon and potato pancakes worked well together, and Shaw Media photo the hollandaise sauce wasn’t too thick, which I have found to be the case at other restaurants.

Requesting a booth, the owner told me he could get one ready in moments, noting the empty booths closest to the door sometimes were affected by a breeze when the weather was cooler.

I was seated in a snap and was shortly joined by a friend from my childhood.

We were just two of many in a diverse crowd eating at the restaurant during lunchtime on this particular Thursday.

Coffee came quickly, as my friend and I looked over the menu.

‘BACK TO PLAYING BASKETBALL’

Coaches feel emphasis on touch fouls much looser by midseason

Entering a gym throughout the course of a high school basketball season, it is almost a guarantee to hear someone yell that phrase during a game.

While there is certainly emphasis for officials to keep an eye out on certain rules more than others, one in particular has drawn a particularly close watch during boys and girls games in recent years: hand-checking fouls.

While every coach has an opinion on what is or isn’t a foul – which could depend on what kind of team they coach – it’s tough to figure out what will be called a foul during the course of a game.

“All we talk about is to ‘show your hands,’ ” firstyear Kaneland boys coach Joe Conroy said. “You never know exactly how a game is going to be called, so there’s a certain amount of adjusting that needs to happen in each game. But if you show your hands and keep the guy in front of you, it’s much harder to call a foul.”

Conroy might be in his first season coaching the Knights, but he has spent time coaching women’s basketball at Northern Illinois University, as well as for the Woodstock and Woodstock North boys basketball programs. He felt it was already a point of emphasis during those days, but has progressed into something that referees are told to watch much closer today.

But how long does that last? Do referees fall back into letting teams play a little more once the season hits full stride or does the impact

Do teams battling in conference rivalry games get to be more physical with what’s on the line? Or how about a postseason game?

St. Charles East boys coach Pat Woods feels as though it could depend on the officiating crew during that particular contest. It often proves to be true that different crews call the games

differently, and Woods feels as though the emphasis fades as the season progresses in some respects.

“It seems to always start off with strong emphasis on keeping your hands off, but as the season goes on, it ends up like it always has been,” Woods said. “It’s tough because you always have to adjust. As a coach, you try to pay attention to those sorts of

things, but it’s on the players, as well, to know what is going to get called and what they can get in trouble for doing.”

It would be nearly impossible for coaches to change their thoughts on how to teach defense, or to change their perspective on how it is to be played. But it’s pretty clear that everyone around the high school game today doesn’t want to hear a whistle

every 10 seconds.

Early-season tournaments can often be a good judging point on how things will get called, at least during the first few times out for referees.

Not any coach or player can be sure on what to expect on a night-to-night basis, which is why making adjustments can be so critical.

“A lot of the time, you just have to play through it,” Batavia boys coach Jim Nazos said. “It will be interesting to see how it’s called early. It really does differ with each game, so as coaches, we need to understand that and so do the players.”

East girls coach Lori Drumtra remembers certain games where the officiating was so whistle-heavy, the amount of free throws shot in games got to be out of hand.

But Drumtra, along with Geneva girls coach Sarah Meadows, feels referees need that adjustment period.

It isn’t just the players and coaches shaking off the rust; referees need to do so as well.

“I mean, my gosh, teams were in the bonus in the first quarter,” Drumtra said. “But by midseason they seemed to be getting away from it.”

“It was ridiculous to start the season and it got better as the season went on,” Meadows added. “I don’t remember it being a huge factor last year, so I kind of feel like we’re back to playing basketball.”

That’s the main point that all coaches, players and referees want: not just for the players to get back to just playing basketball, but also playing it the right way.

BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL SCOUTING REPORTS About coach Brett Porto: Porto is in his seventh season and owns a 91-75 record with the Rockets.

Last year’s record: 14-15 overall, 10-4 Big Northern Conference East Division. Lost to Kaneland, 53-46, in a Class 3A Burlington Central Regional semifinal.

Returning starters: Ta’Vontae Harris, jr., G; Ethan Mayfield, sr., G; Luke McCurdy, sr., F; Ryan Fitzgerald, sr. F. Scouting the Rockets: The Rockets have as many seniors as sophomores on their roster, although most of their team earned varsity experience last season.

Burlington Central brings back four of its five starters, only needing to replace the production left behind by departed senior Stefan Jochum. Fitzgerald is the motor for the Rockets, as he was the club’s leader in points and rebounds a season ago.

Hot handles: Harris was brought up to the varsity level in the middle of last season, although Ethan Mayfield also has experience bringing the ball up the court.

Bottom line: Returning four starters to a team that was near the top of the Big Northern East last season gives them expectations to compete for a conference title.

The trio of Ross, Holt and Pryor are in their third season of starting on varsity, and they combined for 32.9 points per game last year.

Hot handles: Junior Kristina Ahlers was a midseason call-up last season and gave the Rockets a spark when given the opportunity.

Bottom line: There’s a sense of urgency with this team after enduring an upset to Sycamore in the playoffs last season. This senior-laden roster should be looking at a deep run in the state playoffs.

Returning starters: Reagan Sproat, sr., G; Antwainette Walker, so., F; Mia Mazza, jr., G. Scouting the Spartans: It’s a year of change for the Spartans. A new coach: Taylor is currently working on a PhD in organized leadership, and she was most recently an assistant head coach at her alma mater, Concordia University in Chicago. A new conference: St. Francis was one of the six new additions to the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference, bringing the total number of teams in the conference to 22. The Spartans’ personnel will be a constant as St. Francis lost just two seniors from last season’s squad.

Hot handles: Sproat, Mazza and Sloane Baumgartner are three proven guards in the Spartans’ rotation. Guard play will be key for a St. Francis team whose tallest player is 5-foot-10.

Bottom line: Taylor will have the opportunity to mold the program in the way she envisions, as St. Francis has a solid, balanced core to work around. Walker, an All-Area honorable mention player as a freshman, could be a force in the paint once again.

Dwyer spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Hinsdale South and has head coaching experience at the varsity level at Glenbard North. St. Francis can put a tall lineup across the board as the club has six players at 6-foot-3 or taller. Dwyer’s philosophy is to play fast with full-court defensive pressure and to crank up the tempo at the offensive end.

Hot handles: Will Purdom scored 13 points in the Spartans’ opener and newcomer Tim Lilly, a third baseman committed to play baseball at Villanova, should add depth at the guard position.

Bottom line: Dwyer’s inaugural season with the Spartans will be aided by having an experienced roster that sports 10 seniors after graduating only three players from last year’s squad.

20 Cunningham still

kicking ... and shivering

Soccer. Outdoors. In December. Let’s call it a … unique … experience.

Darcy Cunningham is one of the few NCAA athletes still playing soccer at this point in the calendar. Her Washington University (St. Louis) team is heading to the Final Four next week in Kansas City, Missouri, to compete for a Division III national championship.

It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work and a whole lot of winning by her team this season. But, yeah, it’s going to be cold. Thankfully for Cunningham, a St. Charles East grad, she has some experience dealing with the cold. The freshman forward is from the Chicago area, after all.

“I’m definitely lucky,” Cunningham said. “Pretty much half my team is from California, so they’re always in Under Armour when it’s like 40, 50 degrees outside and I’m out there in short sleeves and shorts. So it’s definitely an advantage being from the Chicago area. I’ve dealt with way worse weather than there in St. Louis.

“But definitely one of our goals this season was to be able to play in December. I can tell you, for sure, I’ve never played outside in December.

Normally I’m indoors in Chicago for soccer in the winter.

But we’re very excited about going to Kansas City.”

The postseason success is an incredible experience for Cunningham in just her first college season. She’s been a big part of the team as a freshman, too, starting 16 games and ranking fourth on the team in scoring, tallying five goals and two assists for 12 points.

It wasn’t long ago that Cunningham didn’t even know if she’d be ready to go when her first season started.

She suffered an ankle injury during her final season with the Saints, and she heeded the advice of trainers and coaches who said she should sit out part of her senior season rather than jeopardize her freshman season at the college level.

This Thanksgiving, Cunningham is thankful she took that advice.

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber “I definitely wanted to work as hard as I could over the summer. Coming off the high school season, my senior year, I was injured, so I was a little worried because I wasn’t able to play at all during the summer recovering from my ankle injury,” she said. “But I worked really hard at the end of the summer to be ready for college.

“It’s so rewarding. I know my senior year, I was so focused on getting back for the rest of the season, I wanted to make a deep run in the playoffs because the previous year, my junior year, we went to state. So I wanted to be able to go back to state again. But a lot of people, trainers and coaches, helped put it into perspective for me for the future. Looking back, playing in the IHSA high school playoffs doesn’t really compare to playing in the Final Four of college, so I’m definitely glad that I listened to them so I could be in this position.”

Cunningham has had what she’s called an incredible experience just one season into her collegiate career. The games that got the Bears into the Final Four were plagued by bad weather – “It was in the 30s and raining and 21 mph winds,” Cunningham said – adding some extra drama to the proceedings. Playing for a national title in December means that weather shouldn’t be expected to be much better.

But it’s an experience Cunningham and her teammates are looking forward to.

“I think there are 464 teams in D-III, and now there’s only four left,” she said. “It’s pretty incredible to be one of those four teams left.”

The Bears will face top-seeded Messiah in a national semifinal at 11 a.m.

The problem with DIY pedicures is that, particularly as we get older and stiffer, it can be hard to do meticulous work on your own feet. So before you commit to the DIY route, I’d suggest you consider giving nail salons another try – while holding them to certain standards. Make sure: • The pedicurist sterilizes reusable instruments for at least 10 minutes in a disinfectant solution.

• The instruments have been stored in a clean, dry container.

• Devices like whirlpool foot baths that are shared by clients are routinely disinfected after each use.

• The pedicurist does not file corns or calluses or use any sharp instrument on your feet.

If the pedicurist uses disposable instruments (many do), then obviously some of the above is irrelevant. Another alternative is for you to bring your own instruments to the pedicurist, after having sterilized them with alcohol.

If this advice seems a little “pushy,” just explain you’ve had some bad experiences with pedicures and you’re simply being careful. The pedicurist should understand, or at least not get defensive and angry.

Unless, of course, he or she was the pedicurist with whom you had the bad experience.

I didn’t want to correct the teacher, but I remember reading in a teen magazine that STDs can go through a condom. Who’s right?

I really need to know, because my boyfriend and I are sexually active on a regular basis and I always insist he use a condom.

I know you encourage teens not to be sexually active, but as you can see, I didn’t take your advice.

All I’m asking for are the facts without a lecture. – Nameless, New York Nameless: There are two types of condoms. One is made of latex (rubber) and the other is made of animal skin or membrane. The latex condoms are much more reliable and considered to be 99.9 percent effective. Condoms made of animal skin are porous; it’s possible for STDS to penetrate this type because of microscopic openings in the material.

About 50,000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed annually in North America and about 7,500 people die each year from this disease, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

And the sun’s rays aren’t any safer than tanning booths. Any time the color of human skin changes, to red from sunburn or to a “golden goddess” bronze, skin damage has occurred.

In other words: There is no such thing as a “healthy tan.”

Dear Dr. K: Last time I got a pedicure, I ended up with toenail fungus.

I’m not taking another chance. Any advice for an at-home, do-it-yourself pedicure?

Dear Reader: A pedicure is a great way to pamper your feet. But salons don’t always maintain the best safety standards, and that can lead to infection.

If you’re determined to try a do-it-yourself (DIY) pedicure, pick up a basic pedicure kit at your local pharmacy.

Then follow these directions: • Fill a pan or basin with warm water.

• Soak your feet for a few minutes, until the skin and nails soften.

• Dry your feet with a towel.

• Gently rub a pumice stone against your skin to remove any dead skin cells. Don’t rub too hard.

• Take care of the cuticles. Rub lotion or oil onto your toenails to soften the thin layer of skin at the bottom and sides of your toenail. Gently push the cuticles back to the base of the nails, using an orange stick or a moist washcloth. Don’t cut the cuticles; that could lead to infection.

• Clean underneath your nails with an orange stick wrapped in cotton or soaked in water to soften the edge.

• Cut your toenails straight across with toenail clippers, or make a series of small snips with nail scissors. Smooth the edges with an emery board.

• Gently apply foot lotion to your feet. If you are going to apply nail polish, wipe off excess lotion with a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol.

• Apply nail polish.

Use foam separators or cotton balls to separate your toes. Then apply the polish. Allow each coat to dry for several minutes.

Dear Abby: My mother and older sister are trying to spoil my happiness about my upcoming wedding. I have known my ex-stepmother, “Gina,” for 20 years and have been best friends with her for the last 15. We remained close even after she divorced my biological father, who is not in the picture.

I had an appointment to go dress shopping and invited my friends, my mom and Gina (who lives out of state).

When I told Mom that Gina was coming, her response was she would come “some other time.” Abby, Mom has been remarried for more than 30 years and has spent time with Gina prior to this.

It’s not like they are enemies.

In my opinion, responder should have a singleton or void; balanced hands have too many losers. But at this vulnerability, a little latitude would be acceptable.

When West doubled again to promise extra strength, East might have bid to the five-level. Note that five hearts is defeated only if South gets a club ruff.

Yesterday, South won trick two with the club ace, carefully ruffed a club in his hand, and after eliminating (ruffing away) the rounded suits, threw in West with his spade king for an endplay.

Although that is hard to see, it cannot cost West to lead a second high heart at trick two. He has both minors under control, and a club trick isn’t running away. Also, if South has a singleton club, leading a second heart will disrupt the timing for the endplay.

Try it yourself, and you will see that the contract is now unmakable.

Congratulations if you saw that defense, especially if you did yesterday.
