MAPLE PARK – More than a month into a Maple Parkbased social media campaign to provide a last request – an early viewing of “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” movie for an ailing member of the Stouffer family – the effort has not produced any response from Warner Brothers, the family said.

The family’s father, Scott Stouffer, has neuroendocrine, a type of cancer, and he might not live long enough to see the upcoming “Hobbit” movie before its Dec. 17 scheduled release date, a family member has said.

His youngest daughter, Jessy Stouffer, 22, launched an effort in October, trying to see whether Warner Brothers somehow could allow family members to view the movie together.

Jessy Stouffer, a 2011 graduate of Kaneland High School, said she has been surprised at the response to her Twitter hashtag – #HobbitMovieLastRequest – and a YouTube video, as both have been seen in other countries.

As to her father’s condition, she said, “It’s difficult, but we’re hanging in.”

Her brother, David, 29, and sister, Katie, 27, are part of the effort, as well, she said.

A spokesman for Warner Brothers responded via email to an emailed request for comment, stating that another member of the team would be responding to a media inquiry. That response had not yet been received as of Tuesday afternoon.

First State Bank plans Toys for Tots drive

WHAT: Holiday collection efforts WHEN: Now through mid-December WHERE: Two First State Bank branches in Batavia INFORMATION: The First State Bank at 18 E. Wilson St. in Batavia is hosting a Toys for Tots drive, with a collection box in its lobby. Toys can be dropped off through Dec. 15.

COVER STORY A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS IN ELBURN Two events – Christmas Stroll and Jinglepalooza – taking place on separate dates in Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Santa Claus still will spend hours greeting children at the Town and Country Public Library during the annual Elburn Christmas Stroll.

This year, however, the event will be on a Saturday, and the outside of the library will feature decorations crafted by the creator of the award-winning Larsen Light Show.

Santa also will visit the Elburn and Countryside Community Center for a Christmas celebration on a Friday night. But the event will have a new name – Jinglepalooza – which will be the week after the Christmas Stroll.

The splitting of the events took place after those at the Elburn Chamber of Commerce opted to make a few changes to the Christmas Stroll event.

Traditionally, the event would be on a Friday evening, a week and a day after Thanksgiving.

The celebration would involve events throughout town – at the library, the community center, downtown businesses, the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District and, recently, with live reindeer at the Lighthouse Academy. The new chairs of the Christmas Stroll – Ben Westfall and Kristin Paxinos, co-owners of Elburn-based Da Capo Music Studio – looked to switch the event to a Saturday. It will be this week from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at sites throughout Elburn but not at the community center.

Jinglepalooza instead will go from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at the community center, 525 N. Main St., Elburn. Kristen Damolaris, the volunteer program director at the community center, said not all businesses at the center would have been able to participate in the Christmas Stroll, and those who participate in the craft show were unable to alter their schedules.

The Christmas Stroll First up is the Christmas Stroll. Westfall said moving the event up a week avoids a conflict with the high-profile Geneva Christmas Walk and makes it a week earlier than events, such as Christmas in Kaneville.

Westfall said there is reason to be excited about the Christmas Stroll. The library, at 320 E. North St., already is decked out with a light show created

by Brian Larsen, whose annual light show at his home draws big crowds and earned an award on an ABC-TV show last year.

The fire department, just west of the library, will have tree-burning demonstrations, as well as food and drinks.

Also, it happens to be Small Business Saturday, so the open houses run by local businesses will be fitting. And, he said, the event will shine a brighter spotlight on the chamber’s Kaneland scholarship raffle.

Tickets will cost $5 each and will be available at the festival.

The winners will be announced after the event at Schmidt’s Towne Tap, at 107 N. Main St. in Elburn. The big prize is a 50inch flat screen TV. “We thought maybe we should bring it a little more

into the spotlight and incorporate it into the Christmas Stroll,” Westfall said of the scholarship. “Let’s let the town know that it exists and have a raffle. … It’s fun, and some people will win some cool prizes.”

Jinglepalooza The Jinglepalooza event will include a craft show, lifesized Candyland and a small train operating outside of the community center. There will be martial arts demonstra-

tions, live animals and many kid-friendly events.

“All of the events are geared toward kids, except for the bazaar,” Damolaris said.

Santa will be in the gym this year instead of outside on the train. There will be elves on the train.

“We’re always excited about this event,” Damolaris said.

“It’s a big event for us.”

As far as getting both events on the same date next year, that remains to be seen. Damolaris

said she can see the advantages for having the celebration on a Saturday, but she said Thanksgiving weekend is difficult for some at the community center.

Damolaris and Westfall both said having the events on the same day next year would be ideal. Damolaris said the hope for next year is to “bring the community together.” Westfall said he hoped for big crowds at both events this year.

“I hope everybody has a merry Christmas,” he said.

BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – There are two new programs launched this month in Blackberry Township open to all Kaneland residents, township Supervisor Fred Dornback said Tuesday.

One of the initiatives is a free medical equipment lending program, and the other is a monthly senior social outing at Blackberry Town Hall, 43W390 Main Street Road, Blackberry Township. The senior events will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month, including Dec. 3, Dornback said.

“Blackberry Township government is here to provide services,” Dornback said.

“We ought to try things that are the least expensive to benefit the maximum number of people.”

The township’s inventory of medical equipment includes two motorized scooters, two wheelchairs, two sets of crutches, two walkers and a toilet riser. Dornback said he has a list of people he can contact for reserve equipment, but he hopes someone can donate another riser.

The equipment can be borrowed for free on a short- or long-term basis, and the hope is that residents will abide by an agreement and return the items when they are done, Dornback said.

The township also wanted to designate one afternoon a month where seniors could meet, learn and socialize.

Some of the upcoming social outings will include informational sessions, and the township has collected a variety of puzzles, card and board games, Dornback said.

To further publicize the senior outings, Dornback has reached out to multiple churches in the area and has asked to post information about them at various restaurants and banks.

“We’re going to offer this forever if people come,” Dornback said.

ST. CHARLES – The Filling Station Pub and Grill will have its liquor license suspended for three consecutive days, and its 2 a.m. late-night permit on hold for all of December, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The Filling Station, which is at 300 W. Main St., St. Charles, received these penalties after its owner, Peter Milligan, pleaded guilty Nov. 17 to violating the city’s liquor code. The bar was cited Oct. 29 for serving alcohol to a person under the age of 21, the release states.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina, acting as the city’s liquor control commissioner, enforced local liquor ordinances at the Nov. 17 hearing with Milligan before the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission.

After Milligan’s plea that day, the commission discussed the violation in closed session and announced penalties in the release on Tuesday.

Those penalties include the suspension of The Filling Station’s liquor license and latenight permit starting at 1 a.m.

Dec. 11 through 1 a.m. Dec. 14, according to the release. No alcoholic beverages shall be sold or served on the premises of Milligan – the licensee – during that time frame.

Milligan’s 2 a.m. late-night permit also will be suspended during the entire month of December, and on Jan. 1, the release states. No alcoholic beverages shall be sold or served on the premises from 1 to 2 a.m. during for all of December and from 1 to 3 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Milligan also will have to pay the city a $2,500 fine and $500 in court costs, according to the release. The Filling Station shall submit abatement procedures with benchmarks to the St. Charles chief of police, who will prescribe corrective measures.

Milligan did not respond by Tuesday afternoon to an email and a message left for him at The Filling Station.

“We seek order and dignity in our downtown,” Rogina wrote in the release. “There are penalties associated with this incident. However, there are opportunities, looking ahead, to mirror the good practices of many of our licensees.”

STC facility celebrates resident’s 100th birthday

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Birthday celebrations aren’t uncommon at Autumn Leaves in St. Charles, but the milestone celebrated Tuesday was.

Resident Rose Amara turned 100 – the first such birthday the assisted living facility has celebrated since opening two years ago, employees said.

Staff and relatives scurried about making last-minute party preparations as they waited for Amara to join the festivities. Gifts of white roses and chocolates were arranged around a cake, as was a card addressed to “Rosie.”

Festivities will be at several locations in Sugar Grove, including the Sugar Grove Community House, John Shields Elementary School, the Sugar Grove Public Library and Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.

Holiday in the Grove was established in 2010, and the family-friendly event continues to grow in popularity.

“We get more than 200 to 300 people come through the event,” said Marguerite Ledone, vice-president of the Holiday in the Grove committee that puts on the event.

Holiday in the Grove will kick off with a ceremonial tree lighting at 7:45 a.m. at the Sugar Grove Community House, 151 Main St. Breakfast with Santa will follow, with seating times at 8, 9 and 10 a.m.

Trustee Blecker to run for village president

CAMPTON HILLS – A Campton Hills trustee in his first term said Monday that he has filed to run for village president in the April 7 consolidated election.

Although documents aren’t due until Dec. 22, Harry Blecker on Monday afternoon turned in his paperwork to Harry Blecker seek the president’s seat, interim Village Clerk John Strauss confirmed on Tuesday.

Blecker, whose current term ends in 2017, said he is running to bring to village back to its original goal of being a semi-rural community with low-impact development, and to stop the internal strife he said is present between vil-

lage officials.

“We couldn’t go another four years the way we are going now,” Blecker said Monday.

Village President Patsy Smith on Tuesday declined to address Blecker’s comments about the current situation with village officials. The filing period for the spring election begins on Dec. 15, according to a Sept. 25 memo from Strauss posted on the village’s website.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate to address [Blecker’s comments] until he’s actually a candidate,” Smith said Tuesday. “The filing period hasn’t even started.”

Along with village president, the village clerk and three trustee seats are up for re-election in the spring.

Trustees Laura Andersen and Sue George filed paperwork to run as trustees again, as did resident Michael O’Dwyer, Strauss confirmed.

Kettle campaign launches in Elburn, Sugar Grove

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Familiar sounds of the winter holiday season – the Salvation Army kettle bell ringers – should be sounding today in Elburn and Sugar Grove.

Carol Alfrey of Conley Outreach said today’s kickoff was dependent on the number of volunteers signed up – a factor that also will affect the remaining bell-ringing days.

“The more [volunteers] we have, the longer we can ring during the day,” she said.

“There’s always a spot for people if they like to volunteer.”

Conley Outreach, which serves as the Salvation Army extension site for the Kaneland area, is scheduling volunteers for Saturday shifts between now and Christmas, as well as the two weekdays before the holiday, Dec. 23 and 24, Alfrey said.

for rent, heat, food, clothing and other necessities.

“We get about $2,000 for the whole year to serve this Kaneland area, so the kettles are critical,” Alfrey said.

The fundraiser set a record last year with about $7,700 raised through kettles and mailed donations, Alfrey said.

This allowed Conley Outreach to up its annual household allowance from $200 to $300 this year, she said.

In addition to the kettles, Alfrey said, Conley Outreach will be accepting donations at www.onlineredkettle.org/ conley.

She said the organization aims to raise $1,000 through the site.

“I think it’s very doable,” Alfrey said.

Higher fees take effect Monday for county clerk’s services

The higher fees are the result of a fee study conducted by Fiscal Choice Consulting at the county’s request. Done in September, the study compared the actual cost of the services to the fees charged.

The study found several of the clerk’s services were operating at a loss, including birth certificates, marriage certificates and, among others, death certificates.

The clerk’s office issued a news release listing the new fees for 31 services. They range from 10 cents to $68.40.

Fees include the following: • $16 for birth, marriage and civil union certificates; $6 for additional copies.

• $20 for death certificates;

$10 for additional copies.

• $32 for marriage and civil union licenses.

• $10 for assumed name certificates; $5 for supplemental certificates.

• $3 for fax copies.

• $1 for photocopies.

• $18 for the issuance of tax deeds.

• $68.40 for redemption fees.

• $4 for voter lists.

• $2.50 for voter certification.

The Kane County Board approved the fees Nov. 10. They will take effect Monday, the start of the county’s fiscal year.

County documents indicate the higher fees are estimated to generate additional revenue – $239,770 in the general fund and $32,000 in the vital records automation fund – for the 2015 fiscal year.

The clerk’s office is in Building B at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

GENEVA – A St. Charles man who was being processed for a drunken driving offense was charged with a felony when police said he resisted arrest, resulting in an injury to a Geneva police officer.

James W. Hutcheson, 47, of the 1300 block of Fox Meadow Court, St. Charles, was charged with driving under the influence after a car crash, as well James W. as felony re- Hutcheson sisting an officer resulting in injury. The officer suffered a bleeding laceration to his right thumb, according to police reports.

Hutcheson was released after posting $750 bail, 10 percent of a $7,500 bond that was set. The charge is punishable by one to three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000. His next court date is today.

According to the crash report, police responded to motorists who were reporting a car that had sustained major damage and was in the roadway. Police found the 2014 Nissan Maxima that Hutcheson was driving in the 100 block of North Kirk Road, 200 feet north of East State Street, at 3:35 a.m.

According to the crash report, Hutcheson said he was traveling west on East State Street, attempting a right turn to go north on Kirk Road, when he hit the median curb.

Ex-St. Charles man accepts 5 years in prison on marijuana charges

GENEVA – A dispute between brothers led to domestic battery charges for one and felony possession of marijuana for the other, according to Geneva police reports.

Andrew M. Rusin, 29, of the 700 block of Illinois Street, Geneva, was charged Nov. 16, with two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery against his brother, Kendal B. Rusin, 25, of the Kendal B. Rusin same address.

While there, officers saw several bags of marijuana and drug paraphernalia on the side of the garage, according to reports. They Andrew Rusin charged Kendal Rusin with felony possession of more than 500 grams but less than 2,000 grams of marijuana, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

The felony is punishable by two to five years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Kendal Rusin was released after posting $2,000 bail, 10 percent of the $20,000 bond that was set.

He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 19.

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A former St. Charles man has pleaded guilty to unlawful delivery of marijuana, a felony, and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Circuit Judge John Barsanti accepted the plea Friday.

Nicholas A. Salemi, 24, now of California, agreed to the sentence and a fine of $41,490, which is a $39,000 fine plus court costs, records show. He and his co-defendants were charged in June.

According to state law, he is eligible for day-for-day sentencing and will receive credit for at least 168 days served in the Kane County jail, more than five months. Prosecutors presented evidence that between Feb. 19 and April 2, he and co-defendant Maryhelen Kwiatkowski allegedly shipped about five pounds of

marijuana from California to Kane County through the U.S. Postal Service.

The charge against Kwiatkowski, 32, unlawful delivery of marijuana, also a felony, still is pending. Her next court appearance is Jan. 30.

Prosecutors alleged that some of the proceeds from the sale of the marijuana shipped to Kane County were received b y c o d e f e n - Nicholas dants Anthony A. Salemi and Gina Salemi, Nicholas Salemi’s parents.

Felony charges of money laundering are pending against Anthony Salemi, 56, and Gina Salemi, 52, of the 5N400 block of North Glenoak Lane, St. Charles Township.

The felony charges are punishable by two to five years

in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Other charges against Anthony Salemi include unlawfully producing or possessing cannabis plants, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of cannabis, all misdemeanors. Their next court date is Dec. 4.

Nicholas Salemi’s attorney, James Casement, said all other charges against his client were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Because his client had a previous possession conviction in Iowa, Nicholas Salemi was not eligible for probation.

“He had a medical marijuana grow operation in California that was legal,” Casement said. “Obviously, you can’t ship it or sell it to people in places where it’s not legal. If he had kept the system in California, it would have been fine.”

Casement said prosecuting

and defending people for marijuana offenses “wastes everybody’s time.”

“I don’t think anybody should go to jail for marijuana. It is a waste of resources for something that will eventually be legal all across this country,” Casement said. “In Illinois, we are putting nonviolent criminals in jail for marijuana. ... There are drugs that are in use legally – like alcohol – that are far more dangerous to society and individuals than marijuana will ever be.”

Casement said Nicholas Salemi “maintains his parents’ innocence.”

The charges were the result of a joint investigation of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Homeland Security Investigations, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, the North Central Narcotics Task Force and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and you think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.”

New face, fresh ideas THE WASHINGTON POST If the resignation of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel augurs a move by President Barack Obama to shake up his national security team and reconsider his strategy in crisis areas such as Syria and Ukraine, then it will be welcomed. So far, there’s not much sign of it.

Mr. Hagel has been a weak leader at the Pentagon who, at least in public, has been less of a force in policy discussions than some of the generals who report to him. But his thinly disguised dismissal came after reports that he had raised sensible questions about Obama’s overly constrained approach to fighting the Islamic State.

The president turned to Mr. Hagel, a friend from the Senate, after the 2012 election seemingly because he wished for a Pentagon chief who would willingly execute his second-term priorities of withdrawing from Afghanistan, avoiding other foreign military engagements and implementing big budget cuts. This agenda of retrenchment, however, was overtaken by the Islamic State’s rise and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Like the two defense secretaries who preceded him in Obama’s Cabinet, Mr. Hagel found himself caught between an insular White House team and military commanders who chafed at what they see as both micromanagement and the absence of a workable strategy.

By this fall, according to The New York Times, Hagel was telling the president what he least wished to hear: that U.S. policy in Syria was inadequate because of its failure to address the regime of Bashar Assad.

Obama’s choice for a new defense secretary will be particularly important. What’s needed is a seasoned, independent policymaker with a genuine command of military affairs who is able to win the respect of both the generals and the White House. Former undersecretary of defense Michele Flournoy – whose knowledge of Pentagon budget arcana, as well as grand strategy, is formidable – would be an excellent choice.

To work with such a strong leader, the president must accept that his strategy, as well as his staff, are in need of rethinking. One encouraging sign came Friday, when the administration let it be known that it will allow U.S. forces in Afghanistan to conduct offensive combat missions, including air support for Afghan troops, after this year – an adjustment essential to preserving the Afghan government and army.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LOCALLY GROWN SOLTUIONS To the Editor: We just passed Nov. 15 – the start of the next open enrollment period for health insurance. But even with the advent of the Affordable Care Act – also known as Obamacare – many Americans haven’t found health care more affordable or doctors more accessible. They feel insecure about where quality, affordability and access are headed. Many are confused when trying to navigate the present complex system of insurance.

Hearing concerns from my constituents drove me to convene my third Community Leadership Forum on Aug. 28, this time at Elgin Community College.

Our topic? Health care. Our focus? The consumer.

I’ve found that the most valuable insights and ideas I’ve brought to Congress originated back home in Illinois. So I assembled three expert panels to discuss three distinct topics: how the ACA will

affect consumers in 2015; how technology and innovation can improve health care outcomes; and how to increase access to quality care.

The forum included CEOs of Illinois health care organizations and hospitals, including Advocate Health Care, Cadence Health and the Illinois Hospital Association. Executives from insurance companies joined, as well as small business representatives, including the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

Most importantly, 14th District residents arrived eager to contribute.

We saw that although the health care landscape is rocky, many want to tackle a multitude of challenges together. We shouldn’t wait for a system breakdown – we can work to fix it now.

Three big ideas produced there include the need to: encourage a truly free market system to help lower costs, including reassessing the medical loss ratio and pur-

suing a Universal Exchange Plan alternative; improve the FDA approval process so life-saving drugs can reach patients faster; and encourage research and education to develop new ideas.

I greatly appreciate everyone’s input. In the coming weeks, I will release a full report on my website, Hultgren.house.gov, on those ideas and recommendations.

Americans have a right to feel frustrated with our current health system – it’s far from what was promised. Some feel better about their coverage under the ACA. Others – those cut off from their longtime physicians or losing access to specialists – are not.

This frustration boosts us onward to address these challenges together to raise the quality of care and lower costs for all Americans.

I trust these locally grown solutions will help get us there.

18 Batavia School District 101 to monitor declining enrollment

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 officials said they plan to monitor the district’s expected decrease in enrollment over the next few years.

Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance, told board members at a Nov. 18 school board meeting that the district is expected to see a slight decrease in enrollment starting next year and going through 2018.

“This is happening in little pockets through the district,” Monn said. “We will have to monitor this in the long term.”

He said that data indicates that enrollments at the district’s six elementary schools will decline over the next three years, although the decline will be spread out over all six buildings and will have a minor effect on staffing.

Elementary school district enrollment is expected to decrease from 2,583 students during the 2014-15 school year to 2,355 students during the 2017-18 school year, Monn said.

But each school still will have

a sizable population, he said.

“None of our elementary schools drop below 350 students,” Monn said. “There still is a critical mass. We don’t believe we will be able to reduce staff next year.”

In addition, he said, Batavia High School’s population will hover around 1,950 for the foreseeable future. Projections show the high school’s population will drop from 1,995 students during the 2014-15 school year to 1,974 during the 2015-16 school year, Monn said.

The high school’s population is then projected to increase slightly to 1,983 during the 2016-17 school year, and then decrease to 1,957 students during the 2017-18 school year, he said.

The projections for Rotolo Middle School follow a slightly different track. The middle school’s population of 1,447 students during the 2014-15 school year is expected to increase to 1,502 during the 201516 school year, Monn said. The enrollment is then expected to decrease to 1,494 during 201617 and to 1,487 during 2017-18, Monn said.

pponents aimed to take advantage of Kaneland senior Ellie Dunn before she could cozy up to the net for a kill.

Dunn, a 6-foot senior outside hitter, consistently was targeted by opposing servers, who suspected Dunn might struggle with serve-receive and consequently throw the Knights’ attack off-kilter.

Wishful thinking. Dunn, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Volleyball Player of the Year, was the driving force behind the Knights’ first conference championship team in 33 years, leading Kaneland both in kills (no surprise) and digs (a revelation).

“A lot of teams thought we’ll be able to get her out of system by picking on her and serving at her,” Kaneland coach Cyndi Violett said.

“And I was saying on the sideline, ‘Please pick on her, keep picking on her, keep picking on her.’ ” Dunn, a Ball State recruit, drilled 313 kills to go with 248 digs. Her well-roundedness was especially impressive given limited back-row experience previously in her three-year run on varsity.

Dunn considered her added responsibilities this season a highlight of her senior year.

“I think finally getting to play six rotations because I haven’t always done that,” Dunn said. “I’ve been working really hard to get to be able to do that, especially with club I didn’t always play six rotations, just got a couple chances to play back row when needed, so definitely to get this entire season to play six rotations, I think that was a really good experience, and I’m pleased with how I played.”

Violett said Dunn’s willingness to expand beyond traditional, crosscourt power shots enabled her to overcome extra blocking attention.

“Not being the lazy hitter, that’s something we’ve talked about all season long,” Violett said. “Be the smart hitter and don’t be the lazy hitter and go for the same shot. Working the

lines, going for the cut shot, reading the tip. … Against good teams, you have to learn how to move that ball. She worked on that all year long, and she really came through with it.”

The Knights were among the area’s hottest teams in the late stages of the regular season, making up ground in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East to share the conference title with Yorkville.

Kaneland’s conference surge culminated with a 26-24, 25-14 win at Yorkville in the regular-season finale –

Dunn powered 13 kills as the Knights avenged a regular season loss to the Foxes – making Violett’s return to the head coaching post a banner season for the program.

“On top of school history, it was a lot of our personal goals that we worked to achieve,” Dunn said.

Violett called Dunn a quiet leader who found it “tough to have the spotlight on herself,” but still praised Dunn for setting a winning tone alongside fellow seniors such as Riley Hannula and Anna Senese.

Dunn – a one-sport athlete who acknowledges having few hobbies outside of school and volleyball – said the loss hit her hard.

“All the work we put into it coming to a close, we still have club and everything, but it’s a different relationship with your club team than with your high school,” Dunn said. “You see the girls all the time, like every day, and they’re like your best friends.”

Kopec passionate about volleyball on, off court

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Peg Kopec is much more than St. Francis’ girls volleyball coach by this stage of her career.

Kopec has earned the stature as a leading figure in Illinois high school volleyball by virtue of her hall of fame career with the Spartans, which includes more than 1,200 wins and 11 state championships, including the program’s third straight IHSA Class 3A state title earned this month at Redbird Arena.

“I think we finished strong,” said Kopec, Kane County Chronicle Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year. “I thought we were challenged very much at state by two strong teams (Breese Mater Dei and Joliet Catholic) and I thought we responded well.

Both teams were strong in ability and that pleased me very much that we did well and we played [some] of our better games, and that goes along to the supersectional

The Spartans finished with a 38-4 record and continued their mastery of Class 3A, dropping only one set (to Mater Dei) during the postseason.

St. Francis is due to bump up to Class 4A next year because of the IHSA’s new “success factor” that takes effect next year, and Peg Kopec that’s one of the bigger-picture state volleyball issues on which Kopec has strong views.

Kopec is confident the Spartans can compete in Illinois’ largest class and doesn’t mind programs’ track records being used as a component in determining classification, but resents only nonboundaried schools being subject to the policy.

Kopec said volleyball regionals are moved to Thursdays to avoid the possibility of overlap with football playoff games, which upsets her, and she said playing regional championships on a school night means an extra night of stressful logistics for

students and an inability to celebrate as a team afterward.

She’s taken her concerns to the IHSA, and hopes the organization revisits it this offseason.

On the court, however, Kopec has few complaints – per the usual.

“I think St. Francis always has a target on our back,” Kopec said. “To see the girls come together and play their best at the right time … is always wonderful.”

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A big fourth-quarter swing saw the St. Francis boys basketball team knock off Kaneland, 5044, in the Spartans’ first game of the Windmill City Classic Tournament on Tuesday night.

St. Francis (1-0) trailed by six points to start the fourth quarter when Daniel Malek knocked down a 3-pointer, then picked off a pass seconds later and scored on the layup to cut the deficit to one point.

“I knew that he was going to come off that stagger and I knew that we just needed a boost because at that point we were down [three],” Malek said. “I just anticipated the pass and jumped into the passing lane and got the layup.

“It was a big boost on defense. After that our guys started to hit a couple of shots, so it helped a lot.”

The senior registered all five of his points on those two plays, spurring the Spartans to the comeback win after trailing, 21-16, at the half and 31-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

“When we got into the fourth quarter, I felt our man defense just kind of gradually wore on them a little bit,”

Spartans coach Bob Ward said. “When you keep punching away with that, with good man to man pressure, it eventually might lead to a steal. We had a really big steal by Malek after he hit a three, went on a little 5-0 run.

I thought we were really good on the ball.”

Jason Sullivan and Gabriel Johnson led the way for St. Francis with 17 points apiece, while Johnson added three rebounds, helping the Spartans open up a nine-point lead late in the fourth quarter.

After giving up the lead early in the second quarter, St. Francis did not lead again until early in the fourth.

Sullivan said the Spartans stayed patient and relied on senior leadership, never trailing by more than six before the fourth-quarter surge.

“The seniors have a lot of experience with it and we just have to maintain our composure,” Sullivan said. “If you stay calm, everything will come to you. You can’t force it.”

Kaneland’s Jacob Gomes, a 6-foot-5 senior center, was limited to just two points on the evening, both coming via late-game free throws. Ward said shutting Gomes down in the low post was paramount to the Spartans’ strategy en-

tering the game.

“We were concerned about the ball getting into the post to kids like Gomes for them,” Ward said. “I thought the kids did a really good job of denying the ball inside.

“It was really huge. If you play behind [Gomes], he’s such a boss that he can catch it and score and get fouled.”

Ryan David carried the Knights for most of the game, leading the team with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Junior shooting guard Dylan Vaca went 3 for 3 on 3-point attempts on the night, finishing with 16 points and adding three rebounds for Kaneland.

Despite having a physically smaller roster than most teams, including the Knights, St. Francis was the grittier team in the win, Sullivan said.

“I think tonight is a great builder. It shows our underclassmen how we can do anything, even though we’re undersized. We’re an undersized team but if we play hard, with a lot of passion and heart, we can accomplish anything.”

Both teams resume tournament play today. St. Francis faces Chicago Marine Leadership Academy at 6 p.m. before Kaneland faces host Batavia at 7:30.

Kaneland junior Dylan Vaca couldn’t have started the 2014-15 season much better, blistering Chicago Marine Leadership Academy for 24 points while sitting for most of the fourth quarter during Monday’s Windmill City Classic opener at Batavia, a Knights victory. ‘Crazy energy’ early enough for Vikes again

Unfortunately, so have sluggish second quarters.

But for the second night in a row, Geneva got out to a big enough lead that a lackluster second quarter had no impact on the final. Geneva beat Downers Grove North, 56-41, on Tuesday night in Glenbard East Tournament play.

Geneva (3-0) ran out to a 2210 lead after one quarter and never let the Trojans get closer than 10 points despite the Vikings scoring just six points in the second quarter.

“We are starting out with quick baskets. At halftime, we are asking, ‘What’s going on?’ We have to figure out why we’re starting out so quick and then slowing down. We are starting out with crazy energy.”

Sophomore Grace Loberg fueled the energetic Vikings in the first quarter, pulling down five rebounds and getting two steals, along with four points.

Seniors Janie McCloughan and Abby Novak scored 12 and

11 points, respectively, for the Vikings.

Vikings senior reserve guard Courtney Reynolds hit a big 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter when the Trojans had again crept within 10 points.

Reynolds finished with six points in the contest.

“We don’t lose anything when (Reynolds and the other second-unit players) come in,” Meadows said.

Meadows said this year’s squad has solid guards – including Kate Rogers, Reynolds, Novak, Margaret Whitley, Ashley Shogren, McKenna Happold and Stephanie Hart – and that suits her just fine.

The contest was tied at 7 halfway through the first

quarter when Geneva went on a 15-0 run.

McCloughan scored six points during the key run of the game. She hit a jump shot, put back her own shot after an offensive rebound, and went coast-to-coast after a defensive rebound.

The Vikings pushed the lead to 28-10 midway through the second quarter when Whitley hit a 3-pointer. Rogers had hit a 3-pointer earlier in the quarter.

That was it for the Vikings’ first-half scoring as the Trojans went on a 9-0 run to close the half trailing, 28-19.

Geneva will face Glenbard South in the championship game of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. today.

The Maroons led, 10-9, after the first quarter and trailed by only four points at halftime.

The Bulldogs took control of the game in the second half but did not pull away until the fourth quarter, leading by only eight points, 35-27, at the start of the final quarter.

Although Jensen was pleased with the win, he saw room for improvement.

“There are still a lot of things. The energy, the rotation on defense and the concept of being relentless weren’t there tonight,” Jensen said. “There is a lot left to improve after tonight. We are going to have to do a lot of things better.”

Frazier agreed.

“We were disappointed with the way we played,” Frazier said “We did not play up to our full potential.”

GENEVA – The St. Charles East wrestling team opened the season Tuesday with a 42-23 victory at Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival Geneva.

East controlled the majority of bouts, and its victories included falls from brothers Niko Derain, a freshman 126-pounder, and Keone Derain, a senior at 152. The Saints are two-time defending UEC champions.

“They got a lot of bonus points, and their kids wrestled smart when we had the opportunity for bonus points,” Vikings coach Tom Chernich said. “They were wrestling every match. If they couldn’t win the match, they were wrestling a smart six minutes to keep it close or get it closer. It was very frustrating.”

Bears beat Bucs, but almost flunk test

You can watch the tape of the Bears’ 21-13 victory over Tampa Bay a dozen times, but you will continue to glean the same results and it will be unlikely they’ll be what you hoped for going in.

When you break down the tape of Sunday’s game unit by unit, position by position and player by player, it almost is impossible not to conclude the Bears got a little worse as a football team in the process of winning the game.

At this point, it almost is impossible to determine what type of offense the Bears are striving to be.

In the first half, they ran the ball six times and attempted to throw it 21. In the second half, they ran the ball 20 times and attempted only nine passes.

At no time did they throw or run the ball particularly well.

Defensively, they allowed Tampa, which averages 318 yards of offense a game, to put up 367 yards.

Whether the takeaways were because of the good play of those Bears or the ineptitude of McCown and the Bucs is in the eye of the beholder.

The offense played by far its worst game under coach Marc Trestman.

I’d give Jay Cutler a C+ for toughness and perseverance. He spent most of the first half running for his life, he was sacked three times and I counted at least four dropped passes by his receivers.

But none of the drops was on great throws, and he missed

badly on several other incompletions.

He did avoid throwing the ball into dangerous coverages.

With the exception of tight end Martellus Bennett, his receivers were a C- and did nothing to even merit conversation.

Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery both had false start penalties and Marshall also had a third-down penalty for an illegal block, which the Bucs declined because they stopped the play anyway.

Bennett had one of his best games of the year blocking the run, and his leaping 26-yard grab of a ball Cutler almost overthrew while escaping the pocket to his right set the Bears up for their first touchdown at Tampa’s 8-yard line. He gets a B. Matt Forte had his usual solid day running the ball, but managed only 4.6 yards on five receptions for a B. The offensive line was awful in the first half; serviceable in

the second and at best was a C-.

Jermon Bushrod, in particular, seemed to struggle early while Roberto Garza and Kyle Long picked up the group in the second half.

There is one piece of excellent news on the tape.

Stephen Paea had another outstanding game. It was an A+ performance that included two sacks and a forced fumble. He competed all game, collapsing the pocket repeatedly, and at this point you’d have to say he’s been the Bears’ best defensive player.

Although Paea was the only lineman to show up in the first half, the whole group stepped up in the second half to take over the game. Youngsters David Bass and Cornelius Washington contributed splash plays, as well. Give the group a B. Rookie Christian Jones was the most productive of the linebackers with four tackles in 39 snaps while Jonathan Bostic had only one tackle in 61 snaps

and Shea McClellin no tackles in 22 snaps.

As a group, the linebackers were a C and the secondary was slightly worse.

Mundy, Jennings and Kyle Fuller each badly missed tackles and as a group they allowed Louis Murphy six catches for 113 yards and Vincent Jackson another 117 yards on five catches.

Defensive backs were a C- at best.

Trestman and his coaching staff were a C-, too. The first half was a failure, but the defensive staff did a great job mixing coverages, confusing McCown and taking the game over in the second half.

If this team can’t play better in Detroit and at home against Dallas, the season could be over soon.

Some advice about skin care is simply a waste of time Dear Doctor K: I hear and read so much advice about skin care, and I don’t know what’s true and what’s not. Can you address some common myths about skin care?

Dear Reader: You’re right to be skeptical. My patients often tell me that they’ve heard about a way to keep their skin clear and healthy, and often it is simply not true. I’ll debunk some of the most common myths I hear: • The right skin cream can keep your skin looking young.

For reducing wrinkles, the treatment with the best evidence behind it is retinoic acid (as in Retin-A) that you apply to your skin. But the best ways to keep wrinkles at bay are using sunscreen and not smoking.

• Antibacterial soap is best for keeping your skin clean.

It’s unnecessary to keep your skin completely free of bacteria, and impossible to accomplish anyway. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently indicated it was considering taking antibacterial soaps off the market. That’s because there is no evidence they clean better than regular soap.

In addition, they may promote bacteria resistant to antibiot-

There’s no evidence that any specific food causes acne. An oily substance called sebum causes acne. It’s made and secreted by small glands beneath the skin.

• Tanning is always bad for you.

Spending too much time in the sun or in a tanning booth can increase skin cancer risk. Excessive tanning can also cause skin to wrinkle and age prematurely.

That is not a myth: It’s undeniably true. I spent a lot of time on the beaches of sunny Southern California when I was a kid, only rarely using suntan lotion. And I’ve had many skin cancers as a result – all cured, fortunately.

But developing a light or gradual tan through repeated,

but careful, sun exposure isn’t dangerous. Just take appropriate precautions: Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, apply it thoroughly and reapply when necessary, and avoid peak sun exposure times (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

• Tanning is good for you.

There’s no evidence that tan people are healthier than paler people. Sun exposure does have a health benefit, though. Sunlight activates vitamin D in the skin.

Vitamin D helps keep bones strong, and may well have other health benefits. But you can get the vitamin D you need from food and supplements. You don’t need to tan.

• The higher the SPF of your sunscreen, the better.

Above a certain level, a higher sun protection factor (SPF) has little added benefit. Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is fine.

Keeping your skin healthy is important, no doubt. But beware of these myths, as they will only distract you from your goal.

Girl dreams about boy Dr. Wallace: I’m a sophomore in high school and we just moved to Portland at the beginning of the school year. So far, I like it here and the kids all seem nice and friendly. In the last 12 months, two bridge magazines have gone from printed editions to email versions.

This greatly reduces costs and allows for a much bigger product.

For example, the October edition of Bridge Magazine (bridgemagazine.co.uk) ran to 98 pages. And it appears monthly.

This problem was set by Julian Pottage in his “Test Your Defence” column.

Look at the West and North hands. Against five diamonds, West led the spade king, asking partner to give count. (Against five clubs and higher, it is a good idea to play that an ace lead asks for attitude and a king lead requests count.) When East plays the two, it shows three (an odd number). So West continues with the spade queen: 10, four, nine.

With the heart ace, he would have dropped his spade jack. His four showed the club queen. (If East has neither of those honors, the contract is unbeatable.)

If West shifts to, say, a heart, South takes the trick, cashes his diamond ace and queen, plays three rounds of clubs, ruffing the last high in his hand, leads a trump to dummy’s king and runs the clubs to get home.

However, if West continues with his spade ace at trick three, making dummy ruff, South must go down one.

1) Geneva Hearing Services employs only licensed audiologists. There are two professionals who are licensed in the state of Illinois to sell hearing aids: an audiologist and a hearing aid dispenser. a. Audiologists are required to have a Master’s or Doctoral level degree.

They are clinically and academically trained in all aspects of hearing and balance disorders, including tinnitus. b. Hearing aid dispensers must have a minimum of an associates degree.

2) Geneva Hearing Services is not contracted or owned by any one manufacturer.
