Craft fair shares ‘Abundant Blessings’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Business was brisk Saturday at Kathie Dobrowolski’s booth for Somewhat Organic, featuring soaps, scrubs and lip balms.

Barbara Sikorski of South Elgin bought some healing lip balm, taking a quick personal break from her role as volunteer during the Second Annual Abundant Blessings Shop, Dine and Find at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in St. Charles.

“Business has been very, very good,” Dobrowolski said, as the scents of her handmade soaps filled the air with fragrance of patchouli, lavender, lemongrass and rosemary.

Hundreds of church and community members came to buy floral arrangements; candles; and knitted, crocheted and quilted items; jewelry;

participate in the silent auction; eat lunch; and win raffle prizes.

Jody Wendt of Geneva, cochair of the event with Gerri Stevens of Sugar Grove, said this was the second time the church has hosted the event.

“We raised $6,000 last year, our first year, and it all goes to our missions projects,” Wendt said.

Some of the vendors are church-related, such as the candles that support Soul Kitchen, a free community supper every fourth Tuesday that the church started in January, Wendt said.

“We have over 300 guests every month,” she said. “Everything is homemade.”

More than 50 flower arrangements were done by a half-dozen volunteers. One of them was going home with Aurora resident Herman Gruebner, a church member.

“It’s going to be the centerpiece for Thanksgiving,” Gruebner said.

Slick roads factor in Geneva, St. Charles crashes

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Multiple accidents were reported in the Tri-Cities on Monday as snow swept through the area.

Countywide, Lt. Pat Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said in an email that roads were especially slick north of St. Charles. He warned motorists of black ice.

In the Tri-Cities, spokespeople with the Geneva and St. Charles police departments encouraged the public to stay home if possible, as both cities had reports of multiple crashes.

“The roads are very slick!”

Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email Monday afternoon. “We would encourage citizens to avoid driving if at all possible, and if they do have to drive, slow down. We have had multiple accidents.”

Eric Lenning, a meteorologist with the National Weath-

er Service Romeoville office, said the snowfall was a result of an Alberta Clipper traveling through the northern Great Lakes.

The accumulation wasn’t expected to be more than a dusting here – perhaps an inch or two toward the state line – but Lenning said it only takes a few tenths of an inch for the roads to become slippery and pose a problem for motorists, especially at the start of the winter season.

“It seems like any time you have your first decent snow of the season, people have to

remember to drive,” he said.

“By the time February comes along, people wouldn’t have any problem with this.”

Another chance of flurries is possible today, but accumulation is not expected, Lenning said.

He said the snowfall should be even lighter than it was Monday.

Temperatures should remain below normal, Lenning said. He also noted that normally, the high temperatures would be in the 40s, but the region is experiencing high temperatures that are closer

8LOCAL BRIEFS Geneva seeks donations for tornado victims GENEVA – The City of Geneva is seeking the community’s help in collecting donations for tornado victims in Washington, after a tornado tore through the city near Peoria.

The drop-off location will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, except for Nov. 28 and 29, until Dec. 9 at the Shodeen Group, 77 N. First St., Geneva.

Requested items include toiletries, resealable plastic bags, toothpaste, toothbrushes, pain reliever medications, cold medicine, first aid kits, feminine products, hand sanitizer, sewing kits, baby wipes, diapers, formula, baby bottles, baby food, pack ‘n plays, shoes, phone chargers, water, black markers, duct tape, denture products, contact solution, incontinence products, reading glasses, plastic cups, plastic plates, plastic utensils, razors, pillows, blankets, extension cords, power strips, pet food and gift cards to chain drug stores.

Basketball shooting camp for girls planned AURORA – Holiday Hoops 2013, a basketball shooting camp for girls in fifth through eighth grades, will be Dec. 27 and 28 at Rosary High School, 901 N. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora.

Residents voice concerns about proposed school district levy

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Residents attended Monday’s Batavia School Board Finance Committee meeting seeking relief from high taxes.

“I’m appealing to you to be fiscally responsible,” Batavia resident Michelle Olache told school board members. “Everyone has had to tighten their belts.”

Residents addressed the proposed 2013 tax levy, payable in 2014. Batavia School District 101 has proposed a $73 million levy, up from last year’s $66 million extension.

As proposed, the owner of a home valued at about $230,000 would see taxes decrease by $20 next year. A public hearing on the tax levy is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Rosalie M. Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

Michelle Olache Batavia resident need to be large enough to capture all of the equalized assessed value returning to the district’s tax base from the expiration of Aurora’s tax increment financing district No. 2, which includes the Chicago Premium Outlets mall in Aurora and significant industrial properties in the Interstate 88 corridor.

“The projected EAV from these properties is just above $92 million,” Monn said.

“Without these properties, our levy request would have been approximately 1.6 percent higher than last year, not the 12.92 percent we are recommending with the TIF

properties returned.”

Batavia resident Sylvia Keppel proposed to school board members that the money from TIF No. 2 be distributed back to taxpayers through a decrease in the levy.

“If that money were to be distributed to the tax base, that would result in a drop in property taxes for the average homeowner of a $240,000 house of nearly $400,” Keppel said.

Keppel has started a website, www.lowerthelevy. wordpress.com. Monn said he has not analyzed Keppel’s calculations.

Batavia school board member Jon Gaspar, who was elected this year, said he still is learning about the budget process.

“Right now, I am trusting the administration about what is good,” Gaspar said.

“It’s kind of a balance. It’s always a concern. I don’t want to just raise taxes, but I also believe in education.”

Russell – who proposed a 2014 budget of nearly $944,000 in August – has agreed to keep the budget at $843,000 for the next three years, barring forces outside his control.

“Our whole budget is a best guess,” Russell said.

Lauzen acknowledged that certain factors, such as union negotiations or unfunded mandates, might require Russell to ask for more money later, but the coroner’s original $900,000-plus request was too much.

“We just can’t afford

that,” Lauzen said.

A budget of $843,000 gives the first-term coroner about $86,000 more to work with than was previously budgeted for the county office – $757,000.

Russell said his office, formerly led by the now-deceased Chuck West, had been underfunded.

This year, he tallied a shortfall of about $88,000 because of expenses for autopsies, toxicology, overtime and fuel.

He and Lauzen said they expect the matter to be re-

solved soon.

The 2013 fiscal year budget amendment is on the agenda for Wednesday’s Finance/Budget Committee Meeting.

“Now that we have the framework of the longterm agreement, we’ll work through the near-term individual challenges,” Lauzen said.

The chairman and coroner recognized other Kane County officials, including Clerk Jack Cunningham and Treasurer David Rickert, who helped them come to

their agreement.

“They’ve been around the county a long time,” Russell said. “I yielded to their wisdom. After they understood my argument, it was easier to communicate to the chairman the needs that we had.”

Lauzen said Auditor Terry Hunt, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and several Kane County Board members also contributed.

“It’s important for us to work together,” Lauzen said.

“Our constituents expect that.”

But, he added, he is often viewed as being antagonistic because there’s an expectation of “rubber stamping.”

Like other governmental bodies, school boards use consent agendas to approve routine items and others that don’t require discussion. To those who don’t attend board meetings, it might appear that school boards rubber stamp a lot, District 303 board president Steve Spurling said.

That, however, isn’t the case in District 303, he said, noting board members discuss and provide input on issues during committee meetings.

“Too often communities are quick to criticize school board members without really knowing all the details that went into their decisions,” Schuler said. “As a result, the efforts of school board members often go unrecognized and unrewarded.”

d McNally doesn’t hesitate to say that St. Charles School District 303 has done a lot of things well.

But McNally – who was elected to the school board in April – hasn’t shied from acting as the voice of dissent on some issues. Perhaps most notably, he criticized the administration’s leadership regarding the reconfiguration of Richmond and Davis elementary schools after a judge ruled in favor of the parents who sued the district over the issue.

“In running for the board, I kind of knew I’d be the voice of opposition for a fair number of things,” McNally said.

McNally is one of seven people who serve on the St. Charles school board, a governmental body that – like the others in the state – is tasked with providing local citizen control over education.

On average, school board members – who are unpaid – spend 10 to 20 hours a month on board work, according to the Illinois Association of School Boards.

In addition to attending meetings, they also go to extracurricular school events, attend seminars to become better board members and are often involved in other community activities, Kaneland School District 302 Superintendent Jeff Schuler wrote in a letter thanking board members.

“More than any other public servant, school board members must listen to the voices of their community and then craft a vision, mission and goals for their district to accurately reflect those voices in the design,” Schuler wrote.

“They must guard two of the community’s most precious resources – their children and their tax dollars – while they create the best educational environment possible with the money available.”

In addition to existing policy, the St. Charles school board this month approved a set of board agreements, which outline board member expectations and address several subjects, including communicating with the media, email use, concerns from the community and staff, and speaking with one voice.

Concert band members do not have a uniform, wearing black pants and white shirts to their performances.

Boosters are raising money for tuxedos for the boys and dresses for the girls.

Fox and Turkey 4 Mile and Youth Mile race set

Applicants sought for STC grant program

BATAVIA – The Fox River Trail Runners and Batavia Accelerators will host the 17th annual Fox and Turkey 4 Mile and Youth Mile Race on Thursday.

Start times are 7:30 a.m. for the youth event and 8:15 a.m. for the 4-mile run. Race headquarters is Peg Bond Center, 151 Island Ave., Batavia.

Youth mile fees are $20 on race day.

GENEVA – The Geneva School District 304 board will be discussing new uniforms for the high school’s various bands and marching band, officials said, as the Geneva Music Boosters are raising money to replace the current uniforms, which are 17 years old.

The cost is $113,000, officials said. Music Boosters, who have been raising money, said that will pay for 160 marching band uniforms, 155 tuxedos and 95 dresses for concerts.

ST. CHARLES – A new electric vehicle charging station will be up and running soon in St. Charles, according to a presentation by city staff about green initiatives during Monday’s Government Services Committee meeting.

Tom Bruhl, electric services manager with the city, said the charging station was installed on the fourth floor of the parking deck on First Street last Friday, but the city is waiting for a ribbon-cutting ceremony before it goes live.

The charging station, which is a ChargePoint brand, has two connections for electric vehicles to charge while parked in the parking deck.

Bruhl said it cost about $13,000 to install the charging station, but a Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant will help offset about $6,500 of the cost in the form of a rebate.

Bruhl said ChargePoint offers a mobile application that allows users with electric vehicles to locate the nearest charging station, which also notes whether the station is in use.

“If people are driving through, it’s an incentive to stop,” he said, noting that ChargePoint gives detailed reports about how many distinct users utilize the charging station. “It helps from an economic develop-

In other business, the Government Services Committee approved an agreement with Verizon to place five or six “mini-cell” sites on telephone poles in areas where service can be improved.

Verizon would pay $250, plus any electrical usage, each month for placing the mini-cells on various poles.

Bruhl said a control power box would be added to each pole in addition to a small cell tower at the top of the pole.

Public Services Manager Chris Adesso gave the committee an update on an emerald ash borer mitigation program that’s slated to conclude in spring 2014.

He said the city is close to completing its goal of removing 3,000 infected parkway trees and replacing them one-for-one with a more diverse population of trees.

He said about 420 ash trees are still left in city rights of way that are in good or fair condition.

She was born Dec. 10, 1915, in Carrsville, Ky., the daughter of the late Ray C. and Mattie Clemens Spees.

Waneta at age 18 moved from southern Illinois to Chicago where she became a cosmetologist. In 1942, she married Harold Nord, and they made their home in St. Charles. There she started her beauty business at her home in 1960, which she ran for 35 years.

She is survived by her three children, William (Sally) Nord, Mary Lynn (Robert) McGowan and Kenneth (Ellen) Nord; two grandchildren, Jason and Brian; 10 nieces and nephews; and her brother, Emil (Edith) Spees.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; a sister, Iola Spees; and three brothers, Durward Spees, Derl Spees and Derald Owen Spees.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Fox Valley Unity Church, 230 Webster St., Batavia. Contributions may be made to the church. Arrangements were made by the Yurs Funeral Home, St. Charles.

Jim was a self-taught, successful businessman. He pursued a lifelong passion exploring the power of mind over matter and aligning one’s heart, mind and soul. He avidly studied NLP as well, reading many books by Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, Tony Robbins, Milton Erickson and others. He was a devoted friend of Bill Wilson for the past 30 years. Jim helped countless people by selflessly sharing his experience, strength and hope with those who struggled yet wanted to grow along spiritual lines. In recent years, Jim enjoyed devoting much of his focus, time and energy helping his son, Max, begin to reach his goals of playing football.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Stacy (nee Sorrentino), of 22 years; and loving son, Max, 16. Jim also is survived by his brothers, George B. Tucker, Rick Waldschmidt and Shawn Tucker; his sisters, Renee Harrison and Jeanenne Leschke; and many nieces and nephews, all who cherished him.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Margret Waldschmidt; his father, John B. Tucker; his brother, Donald Waldschmidt Jr.; and his sisters, Charmaine Glass and Christi Waldschmidt.

“Most of them are in pretty good shape,” Mrenna said.

District 303 resident Kathy Kapusta was concerned about any agreements that would restrict board members’ from voicing their opinions.

“We elected them to speak,” Kapusta said. “We should know what their feelings are.”

Spurling said the “speaking with one voice” section doesn’t silence members.

“As board members we’re entitled to our opinions,” he said.

But, Spurling said the board as a whole can only speak through a vote, and any official information comes from the board president. Once a decision is made, the agreements state, board members are expected to move forward and abide by the will of the majority, even if they disagree.

“We have enough things to worry about to worry about the past,” Spurling said.

As for McNally, he said, his agreement with the voters supersedes any others.

“As long as I have what I consider solid reasons for believing what I do,” he said, “I don’t mind telling people what I think.”

“I think that the clerk’s office has been a bit on the reactive side in light of kinds of numbers we see in voter registration, and voter turnout, more energized effort to reach out to community and school system to do just that,” Davoust said. “If you head an office that is responsible for elections in the county, that is part of the re-

sponsibility.”

The clerk’s office oversees elections in the county outside of the city of Aurora; keeps birth, death and marriage records; and calculates property tax levies for local governments, including school districts, cities and the county itself.

Kevin Williams and Donald Kramer are vying for the GOP nomination for county sheriff. Sheriff Pat Perez, a Democrat, is not seeking another term.

William Mayes Sr. of Aurora filed papers seeking the Democratic nomination for sheriff.

Others who filed as Republicans for County Board include incumbents Phil Lewis and Barbara Wojnicki, both of St. Charles, State Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, filed papers to take on incumbent Bill Foster, D-Napervile, in the Nov. 4 general election.

Several races will be contested in the March 14 primary, according to nominating papers filed Monday, the first day to file. Among them will be incumbent County Board member Melisa Taylor and a challenger, insurance agent Bill Lenert, both Republicans from Sugar Grove.

Taylor, who has served three two-year terms and is seeking a four-year term, said Lenert’s candidacy was put up by County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen “because he has a problem with me as a board member.”

“Because I dig into the data and according to him, I ask too many questions,” Taylor said. “I think he’s looking for low-maintenance board members. … He is micromanaging and being a dictator.”

Closing the door on General Motors THE WASHINGTON POST The Obama administration announced Thursday that it would sell its remaining shares in General Motors by the end of the year, heralding an end to the largest direct government bailout of a U.S. industry in modern history.

The U.S. government stands to lose $10 billion on its investment, based on GM’s current stock price. Combined with the Treasury Department’s already realized loss of $1 billion on its smaller investment in Chrysler, that brings the total cost to taxpayers of rescuing two of the Detroit Three to $11 billion.

Was it worth it? Anyone who claims a definitive answer to that question is not being honest. The government could have spent less on the bailout if it had driven a harder bargain with the autoworkers’ union, which made only modest concessions. But taxpayers would likely have ended up on the hook for a substantial amount anyway. That cost would have to be weighed against the costs of not intervening, which might have resulted in liquidation and a cascade effect throughout the auto industry supply chain.

Not even financially healthy Japanese, German and Korean factories could have escaped that unscathed, to say nothing of the surrounding cities and towns. On the other hand, resources not devoted to propping up GM and Chrysler could have found alternative productive uses, perhaps yielding more jobs and other benefits to society in the long run.

Given the centrality of the auto industry, the depth of its problems and the dangers of allowing it to collapse at the height of the Great Recession, any government, Republican

or Democratic, would probably have intervened. That’s a political reality, not an economic one. President Obama has claimed credit for saving GM, and justifiably so; but bridge loans extended by the Bush administration in its waning days kept GM and Chrysler alive long enough for Obama’s team to arrange the managed bankruptcy that ultimately occurred. And, all things considered, that restructuring has worked out better than many skeptics expected. GM is still too complex structurally, too dependent on trucks and SUVs commercially. But it turned a profit in the last 15 consecutive quarters, slashed its debt from $45.8 billion to $8.4 billion, reined in pension costs and renovated dealerships.

The Great Recession may have killed the old GM, but the company was susceptible because of bad corporate habits that had been accumulating for decades, like gunk in an old carburetor. By the time of its bankruptcy, GM was much more about satisfying the often conflicting demands of regulators, financiers, unions and its own corporate bureaucrats than it was about producing high-quality cars that customers wanted to buy. The government’s exit restores management’s freedom of action. But that liberated management can’t succeed if those who have a stake in GM resume putting their short-term demands – from higher wages and salaries to restored stock dividends – ahead of customers.

History’s judgment of the bailout ultimately depends on what GM makes of its second chance; everyone involved, from Detroit to Washington to Wall Street, must behave accordingly.

Attendance totaled about 110,000 people in October, up from 90,000 people in 2012, according to a news release.

The timing of the IHSA state football championship games moving to Northern Illinois University this year suits the Batavia football team just fine.

The Bulldogs will play Richards in Saturday’s IHSA Class 6A state championship game at Huskie Stadium, and Batavia fans can easily make it home from the 1 p.m. game by supper.

Of the 16 teams competing in state championship games in Classes 1A through 8A this weekend, Batavia has the shortest trip to Huskie Stadium, clocking in at 27 miles.

“I think with the short trip, we’ll definitely get everyone from Batavia there, so it should be a great crowd,” Batavia senior safety Forrest Gilbertson said.

Batavia’s only other state championship game berth came in 2006 when the Bulldogs fell to Normal at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium.

Because of scheduling changes in the Big Ten, Illinois and NIU are now rotating the state title games every other year, with Huskie Stadium’s debut for the state finals coming Friday (Classes 1A-4A) and Saturday (5A-8A).

Bulldogs fans showed up in impressive numbers in Champaign in 2006 but the potential for a whopping turnout with a 40-minute drive to this year’s title game is a pleasant thought to running back Anthony Scaccia.

“Absolutely,” Scaccia said. “I think we’re going to get a bunch of our Batavia fans out there, maybe even more than in ’06 just because it’s so close.”

Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron lauded the Batavia fan turnout for Saturday’s semifinal game at Rockford Boylan, especially given temperatures in the low-20s. The early forecast for this Saturday is a little better, with a high forecasted to be 39 degrees.

Some football observers weren’t thrilled about the shift to DeKalb – including Marmion coach Dan Thorpe – citing greater prestige of playing in a Big Ten stadium. Increased traveling distance for teams from central and southern Illinois also was noted as a potential drawback.

Ryan Minniti said he’s ambivalent to the venue. That the Bulldogs are playing for a state championship is the only detail in which he puts much stock.

“It’s closer, so I guess that’s a plus,” Minniti said. “Either way, as long as we’re going to state, I could care less where we play.”

Geneva holds off Marmion rally for victory

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com WEST CHICAGO – The Geneva boys basketball team used a third-quarter surge to build a lead over Marmion on Monday in the opening game of the Wildcat Turkey Tournament, then withstood a determined Cadets’ rally to hold on for a 65-60 victory.

Trailing, 30-27, at the half, the Vikings opened the third quarter with 12 unanswered points, holding Marmion scoreless for just fewer than five minutes.

“We had to stick with our defense because defense is going to win you games,” Geneva senior guard Chris Parrilli said. “We stuck with it, and it paid off in the end.”

The Vikings led by as many as 14 points late in the third, but Corey Friel came off the bench to give the Cadets a spark. He hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to trim the Geneva lead to 4841, then hit another 3 from the right wing early in the fourth quarter to pull Marmion within five.

Midway through the final quarter, Geneva (1-0) was hit with back-to-back technical fouls on Mike Landi and coach Phil Ralston, giving the Cadets four consecutive free throws and the basketball. Michael Sheehan made two free throws to cut the Vikings’ lead to 54-53.

“I think my guy gets jacked from behind and runs into one of their players and they T-up my guy,” Ralston said. “That’s what I saw and we’re not even given a chance to get an explanation on it.”

Ralston said it was the first technical foul he had received in six years.

Marmion (0-1) turned the

ball over after Sheehan’s free throws, and the Cadets’ failure to fully take advantage of the technical fouls hurt them down the stretch. They got back to within one point again with one minute left in the game, but Nate Navigato (14 points) scored on a baseline drive for Geneva with 45 seconds remaining.

Parrilli (nine points, seven rebounds) and Justin Durante (15 points) made free throws to seal the victory.

In the opening half, Marmion attacked the basket aggressively and Geneva attacked the boards aggressively, leading to a tight, back-and-forth struggle. Tyler Maryanski scored seven of his 11 points for the Cadets in the opening frame as Marmion jumped out to a 7-0 lead.

“This was a little uncharacteristic in our defense,” Ralston said. “At least, I would like to think that when people think about Geneva, they’re thinking about our defense. Our defense was not very good tonight.”

The Vikings were able to wipe out the deficit before the end of the opening quarter. Durante hit a pair of shots from behind the arc to put Geneva up, 13-11.

“Coach is a big believer in crashing the boards,” Parrilli said. “He gets on us a lot to be aggressive. … We just did a real good job on it tonight.

They were in a zone, so we knew that the weak side would be open.”

Marmion played a 1-3-1 zone most of the night.

“They killed us on the boards, just killed us,” Paradise said. “Playing a zone, you’re not going to have a

Each time East Aurora made a run, the Saints had an answer. The Tomcats cut the East lead to 47-34 midway through the third quarter but an Asquini 3 and a Mick Vyzral lay-in pushed the lead back to 52-34.

With Mason out, A.J. Washington shouldered the load in the paint with 13 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. The 6-foot-5 senior also had a pair of monster dunks, including a one-handed jam where Washington took off from nearly the free-throw line.

“I got us going early with the dunk – I mean I felt like M.J. on that one,” Washington said. “I didn’t think I was going to make it. It got the crowd fired up and we started mak-

ing some shots and playing defense.”

East’s lineup could be scary for opposing defenses, with the potential for four and even five three-point shooters on the floor at the same time. Even in the easy win, East shot only 8 for 23 from 3-point range, something Woods says the Saints have to improve upon.

“I’m actually not all that happy with the way we played; I thought we came out sloppy,” Woods said. “I thought in the second half we didn’t play very well, I thought we were real sloppy with the ball. We gave up way too many points in the second half. I’m happy we got the win of course, but we’re looking to continue to get better.”

Asquini knocked down three treys as part of his 11 points while Vyzral also had 11 off the bench.

Fred Reynolds led East Aurora with 18 points, 11 of which came in the second half.

ST CHARLES – Not even five minutes after beating East Aurora, 79-64, to open up the 55th Annual Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament, the St Charles East boys basketball team was hard at work in the weight room.

After knocking down eight 3-pointers and leading by as many as 23 points, the Saints did much of their heavy lifting on the court, earning a win in the season opener for both teams.

Returning three-year starter Dom Adduci led all scorers with 25 points – 18 of which came in the first half – as East had four players in double figures.

“Before the game I felt a little jittery – I didn’t really know what to expect,” Adduci said.

“I came out strong and felt 100 percent. We wanted to come out and set the tone in the first

half. I got some drives in the lane that really opened it up for everyone else.”

Up 14-8 after the first quarter, East (1-0) held the Tomcats to only nine second-quarter points, racing out to a 42-21 halftime lead. Adduci’s quick drives opened up the floor for the Saints, with Jake Asquini and Jake Clodi each knocking down 3-pointers in the first half.

East’s perimeter depth will be a major factor in the Saints’ success this season. East can count on five players who can all shoot 3-pointers consistently, helping offset the loss of Kendall Stephens, who is now at Purdue.

“We have a lot of versatility.

We had guys who came off the bench and shot the ball pretty well tonight,” East coach Pat Woods said. “With Cole [Gentry] coming back, it will be difficult for teams to focus on Dom. I thought he played solid in the first half – he’s so fast with the ball.”

Yet after scrutinizing game film and comparing personnel, the Batavia football team arrived Saturday at frigid Titan Stadium loving its chances to take down perennial state power Rockford Boylan.

The Bulldogs did just that – in astounding fashion.

In a season filled with dominating performances, the Bulldogs arguably turned in their most dazzling showing, given the stakes and the opponent, clobbering Boylan, 38-6, in a Class 6A state semifinal. The Bulldogs will try to avenge their lone regular season loss against Richards in the state championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

“We honored the tradition and history but what film study told our coaches is we should do well,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “[The kids] said if we play our game today, we will win. If we play our game, they can not stop us. If we play our game, our defense will run them over. That’s what the kids were saying before we came out.”

Normally known for its balanced offense, Batavia ran the ball 30 times in the first half while throwing only five passes, perhaps not surprising with the temperature in the low-20s and

“It was pretty tough,” Croft said of the weather conditions.

“I couldn’t really grip the ball too well. I lost feeling in my hand about the first quarter, because I got tackled and a guy landed on it, but it’s all right.”

The victory returns Batavia to the 6A state championship game for the second time; Batavia lost to Normal in 2006 at the University of Illinois.

“It’s an incredible feeling knowing that we’re back here, and this is the first time we’ve been back for a while,” Bulldogs senior safety Forrest Gilbertson said. “Back when I was a little kid, I was always thinking ‘Wow, what if I could make it that far,’ and now it’s here. It’s incredible.”

Piron has presided over the program’s best three-year stretch in program history after taking the reins from his longtime mentor Mike Gaspari, who is now the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator. Piron, who grew up in Batavia, said his love for Batavia and longstanding relationships on the coaching staff make the team’s success all the sweeter.

“It couldn’t be any better for me,” Piron said.

One more win might change his mind.

After the news Monday morning about guard Derrick Rose, terms such as heartbroken and

bad luck were thrown around by an organization that likely has seen its championship aspirations come to an abrupt halt before Thanksgiving.

Rose will miss the rest of the season after successful surgery to repair the torn medial meniscus in his right knee. He suffered the injury in the third quarter of the loss Friday in Portland.

The only good news is that all the signs point to Rose being ready for next season.

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com WINNETKA – The pool deck at the IHSA girls swimming and diving championships can be a humbling and terrifying place for competing swimmers. With stands on three sides of the pool and seemingly right on top of the swimmers, swimmers can barely hear themselves think during the meet.

Interestingly, as Saturday’s finals wore on, the natatorium at New Trier thinned out, with only pockets of fans and teams cheering for their favorite schools.

As the pool deck thinned, St. Charles East and Rosary slowly moved their way up the standings, both eventually landing among the top 10. After an 11th place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Saints earned an eighth-place finish with 67

points, East’s highest finish at the state meet in nearly a decade.

“It was an awesome feeling; this is the best we’ve finished in 10 years,” East coach Joe Cabel said. “I’m very happy, it was a tremendous team effort and everyone had an awesome attitude. It was a lot of fun.”

A year after finishing 34th, Rosary’s youthful team snuck into the top-10, taking ninth place just ahead of Naperville Central. Each of the Beads’ point-scoring swimmers is no older than a junior, with more youth on the way.

“To be able to come back this year and move up 20-something spots is truly amazing,” Rosary sophomore Annie Gosselin said. “I’m so pumped for next year and beyond because we’re getting some really good freshmen next year, so I’m just pumped to see what happens.”

Fleck returns with Broncos

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – P.J. Fleck was beloved when he was a Northern Illinois receiver from 1999 to 2003.

Fleck, who grew up in nearby Sugar Grove and won two Class 3A state championships at Kaneland High School, went on to play two seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, and spent 2007 to 2009 as the Huskies’ receivers coach, the last season as the team’s recruiting coordinator, as well.

However, Fleck since has become public enemy No. 1 among Huskies fans. In his first year as coach at Western Michigan, Fleck has let his voice be known at the rival Mid-American Conference West school, with his “Row the Boat” mantra and energetic personality.

Fans also weren’t happy with Fleck’s infamous one-day stint as offensive coordinator in February of 2012.

However, Fleck hasn’t said anything negative about his alma mater since he took the

Western Michigan job. As his 1-10 Broncos, listed as 35-point underdogs, take on NIU, a program looking for its second straight Bowl Championship Series bid, Fleck has nothing but praise for the Huskies.

“Northern has been very, very good to me; it holds a special place in my heart,” Fleck said during Monday’s MAC coaches teleconference. “It’s a great place, special place that my family and everyone who has been around me truly respects. They’ve done a tremendous job in the last few years.

Really excited about going back.”

Fleck is familiar with not only NIU’s program, but the current players, as well. He was NIU’s recruiting coordinator when the current fifthyear seniors were committing to the Huskies.

He could have been running NIU’s offense last season, but after agreeing to become offensive coordinator, Fleck resigned a day later to become the receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The short stint was a surprise to players and coaches.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM It’s time to think about Thanksgiving and the abundant dinner expected for the holiday. Tradition today suggests a menu of turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, creamed onions, sweet potatoes and apple or pumpkin pie. A green-bean casserole and deep-fried turkey are newer ideas. But the first Thanksgiving probably featured very different food: deer, turkey, wild birds, perhaps even passenger pigeons, fish, clams, mussels, some nuts and a grain called maize that was used to make bread. But by later Colonial times, pies were popular for a main course when filled with meat and for dessert when made with fruit. There were no refrigerators, not even ice boxes, but a cooked pie could be safely stored for about a week if kept away from bugs and mice. A “pie safe” was used for food storage by the 19th century, especially in the Midwest. A wooden cupboard on four tall thin legs was made with shelves and drawers.

But the sides and the cupboard doors had panels made of pierced tin. The sharp edges of the holes kept out most creatures and the holes let in air so the cooked fruit did not create mold. The cabinet was kept on a porch on the cool, shaded side of the house. Collectors today like handmade informal kitchen furniture.

The best pie safes had tin panels with the holes placed in attractive patterns. Sometimes the tin or the wood was painted. Some experts today say a pie can stay on a shelf for two or three days and still be OK to eat. Refrigerating a fruit pie lowers the quality the pie.

Q: My mother has some Royal Doulton figurines of women dressed in elaborate ruffled hoop skirts, bonnets and shawls. But one figurine seems

A: The Royal Doulton figurines made by Doulton and Co. after 1902 were made to sell in gift shops. Most of the figurines were sentimental, lovable, beautiful ladies from a more romantic century. But one of Doulton’s designers, Leslie Harradine, made small anthropomorphic animals and other figures that were unusual. He designed several figurines of women lounging on couches in provocative poses. One called “Dreamland,” made in the 1930s, was in the Art Deco style. Another, “Siesta,” made between 1928 and 1938, featured a shapely blond in a flimsy dress leaning on a sofa covered with a pink shawl.

Both of these figurines are rare and expensive today. Siesta sold in 2013 for $1,560. Dreamland was listed a few years ago for $7,000, but is worth a little less today. The fame of the artist is the reason the figurines sell for high prices. *** Q: A gumball machine was left in a commercial building we bought back in 1968. There is a one-cent decal on the glass top. A metal label on the silver lip where the gum comes out reads, “Parkway Machine Corp., 715 Ensor

A: Parkway Machine was founded in 1938 by Irv Kovens. He was a Baltimore cab driver who repaired and sold stamp machines on the side.

Parkway Machine initially repaired vending machines. The company began selling vending machines and supplies in 1941. Your gumball machine was made between 1943, when one- or two-digit postal zone numbers were first used, and 1963, when five-digit ZIP codes were introduced. In 1999 the company’s name became A&A Global Industries. It’s still in business, run by members of the Kovens family, but is now based in Cockeysville, Md.

A: George Henderson founded Dorchester Pottery in Dorchester, Mass., in 1895. The pottery made jugs, jars, flower pots, butter pots, specialty items and, later, dinnerware.

Henderson was granted a patent for “a new and useful improvement in taps or nipples for earthenware containers” in 1912. He designed a metal screw-off tap that was used in place of a rubber stopper. The Henderson foot warmer became one of Dorchester Pottery’s most popular products. The pottery made foot warmers until 1939. The pottery went out of business in 1979.

In truth, if someone calls you a turkey, take it as a compliment!

‘Nebraska’ sure to get Oscar nominations

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now It’s a long walk from Billings, Mont., to Lincoln, Neb. – anywhere between 850 and 902 miles, depending on which road you take. But that’s the walk crusty and slightly addled Woody Grant has just set out on in the opening frames of Nebraska native Alexander Payne’s newest film. Payne has been nominated numerous times for directing and writing awards from the folks at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes, and he’s nabbed the scripting gold for “The Descendants,” “Sideways” and “About Schmidt.”

His name will likely be on those short lists again, but this time so will that of Bruce Dern, who, playing Woody, has gotten and delivered one of the best roles of his career.

Woody’s taking that walk to Nebraska to claim the million dollar prize he won in one of those magazine sweepstakes contests. He lost his driver’s license due to excessive drinking, and no one – not his wife, neither of his two sons – is going to give him a ride.

And since he won’t listen to anyone that’s trying to tell him the prize is bogus, he hits the highway on foot, only to be stopped immediately by the cops.

As Payne has done in all of his previous films (most of them set in Nebraska), he introduces us to his characters, then allows us to get inside their heads. Actually, much of that was done here by first-time screenwriter Bob Nelson, and this is the first film Payne has directed that he hasn’t also written. But it’s Payne that lets his actors know what he wants from them to get the story told and the characters understood, then steps back and lets them do it.

The business of the million dollars keeps coming up, and keeps pushing the plot along, but it’s the people that take the front seat here.

Dern’s Woody is a man of few words, and probably always has been. He’s a retired auto mechanic, a nice guy who’s always helped others and now, without much money, but seeing what he believes is a jackpot flashing in front of his eyes, he expects people to help him in return.

But his wife, Kate (June Squibb, who played Jack Nicholson’s wife in “About Schmidt”), is at her wit’s end with him, and his sons, Ross (Bob Odenkirk) and David (Will Forte) have no idea what to do about dear old dad.

Well, it’s really only David that would use that loving term on him. Kate is fed up with years of neglect (and let’s not forget that drinking), and Ross is just too selfishly busy to have any concern

about dad’s crazy ideas. It’s David who sees that there’s a problem and would like to help, even if the only way he can think to go about it is to give his dad a ride to where he wants to go.

So, we get a road-trip movie, a father-son relationship movie, a husband-wife relationship movie, a pie-inthe-sky dreamer movie ... the list could go on.

It also includes an examination of what happens when old friends, if they ever really were friends, are led to believe that someone in their group has stumbled onto some good fortune.

So, we also get the story of Woody’s long ago rocky business relationship with the blustery Ed Pegram (Stacy Keach), and it’s not very pretty.

But the movie sure is, physically. It’s shot in stark and stunning black and white, and Payne and his

longtime cinematographer Phedon Papamichael use it in a remarkable manner, both to catch an other-worldly look at the western landscape and to give us subtly breathtaking close-up looks at a variety of faces.

“Nebraska” is a serious film about a dysfunctional family, the patriarch of which might be delusional. But the beauty of its script is that, at all the right moments, it’s sweet and touching and absolutely hilarious (thank you, June Squibb, for your comic timing).

One of its nicest surprises is that it’s just as much David’s story as it is Woody’s, and they’re both people to root for.

“Where Are the Good Guys?” has trouble meeting men and wrote about seeking sexual partners on Craigslist. You answered that there were no good men there.

Well, I met my boyfriend of two years through a “no strings attached” ad I posted on Craigslist. It turns out we had a strong attraction and chemistry, and he’s one of my best friends. So what if we were adults who wanted a casual relationship to start with? Don’t judge everyone that way.

The reason that woman is having problems is she’s using the site to find sex partners when she really wants more. She needs to look in the “relationship” section or on a relationship site. Don’t blame men for wanting to have sex when that’s what she’s advertising. They aren’t all “bad.”

Discipline for child is not the same as punishment Dear Doctor K: My sister and I both have young children. She believes that toddlers are too young to discipline, but I think it’s important to establish rules and consequences early. What do you think?

Dear Reader: Discipline is important for all children, including babies and toddlers.

Disciplining your toddler means teaching and protecting your child, both at once.

Your goal is to keep her safe by teaching her self-control and the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. Discipline does not mean punishment.

There are various ways to discipline a young child. You will probably use all of them at some time or another: • Express your disapproval. Go to your child, look him straight in the eyes, and say “No” or “Stop.” Tell him what he should not do and why. Tell your child what the consequences will be if he does it again.

• Give timeouts. A timeout can be used with children as young as 1 year old. It involves taking a “break” away from a difficult situation and spending time in a less appealing place.

• Use natural consequences.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff For example, if she throws her food off her plate, she will not have any more to eat. If she tears the pages out of a book, she will no longer be able to read it.

• Use logical consequences.

Some behaviors have no immediate or obvious natural consequences. In these cases, set consequences that are logically related to the misbehavior. For example, tell your child that if she does not pick up her toys before bed, she will not be allowed to play with them the next day.

• Ignore harmless behaviors.

Decide which issues are worth a battle and which are not. Consider ignoring behaviors that are harmless, such as temper tantrums or whining.

What about spanking?

Studies have shown that it isn’t as effective in changing long-term behaviors as positive reinforcement and other forms of discipline. In fact, spanking may actually make kids more aggressive in the future.

Once I was the on-call doctor

for a physician group that included a pediatrician. A mother called at 2 a.m. about a problem with her toddler. This is the conversation that followed: Me: “How can I help you?”

Mother: “My son just set his mattress on fire!”

Me: “How badly is he burned?”

Mother: “He’s not burned at all.”

Me: “So how can I help you?”

Mother: “Tell me, doctor. Do you think I should spank him?”

You may think I made up that story, but you can’t make this stuff up. It really happened.

I suggested that she discipline him in any way she felt was appropriate – if she wanted to protect him, her, the other kids, the home and neighborhood.

Final piece of advice: Always try to catch your child being good. Look for positive behaviors and compliment them. That shows your child that positive behaviors are the best way to get your attention and make you proud.

Short books that concentrate on one topic have enjoyed considerable popularity. This year, Audrey Grant put out “Five Steps to Simplify the Endplay” (Baron Barclay).

The reader is given the five steps to work through when planning an endplay. There are 31 pages with illustrative deals covering these key aspects. Then there are 10 problems to solve, so the reader can check that the theory has been grasped. The main snag is that at the table, it can be harder spotting an endplay than executing it once the need is recognized.

In this deal from the book, look at only the North and South hands. The contract is four spades. After West leads the diamond king, how should South plan the play, given that trumps are breaking 3-2?

Three no-trump would have been easy to make, and perhaps North, since he has a strong doubleton, should have eschewed Stayman. But that would have ruined the lesson.

South is in danger of losing three hearts and one diamond.

He can hope that East has the heart ace, but better is to give West the lead with his known diamond queen when he must either lead a heart around to declarer’s king or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

This requires eliminating all the black-suit cards from West.

South wins the first trick, draws trumps, and cashes his four club tricks. Then he leads a diamond. West takes declarer’s jack with his queen, but he is endplayed.

In real life, the endplay will be unnecessary half the time, because East will have the heart queen – but not in books, magazines or lessons.
