‘A sense of excitement’ Christmas Stroll to feature light show, Santa, raffle and more KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – The Town and Country Public Library once again will be decked out for Christmas, starting Saturday at the annual Elburn Christmas Stroll.

Also, businesses in Elburn’s downtown area on Route 47 will offer activities throughout the event, and the evening ends with a raffle drawing at Schmidt’s Towne Tap. The Christmas Stroll, hosted by the Elburn Chamber of Commerce, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

It is the second year it will take place starting on a Saturday afternoon.

“There is a sense of excitement because last year was a big success,” said Ben Westfall, a co-chairman of the event. “It seems that everybody is assuming that it’s going to be a big deal.”

There are three main areas for the event, which this year will not feature the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, which is just settling into its new home on Route 38. The event also has a new penguin mascot, and a contest was conducted to find a name for it. The winning name is Burnie, submitted by Elburn resident Jaden Slomski.

At the library, at 320 E. North St. in Elburn, there will be a visit from Santa Claus, as well as music and magic entertainment. There also will be treats. The roof of the library will feature a scaled-down version of the Larsen Light Show for the second consecutive year.

Preparations are underway at the Town and Country Public Library in Elburn for the annual Elburn Christmas Stroll. The library light show was created by Brian Larsen of the Larsen Lights Show. said at Elburn Village Hall, which is across the street from the library, there will be a holiday lighting, as well as s’mores. Hayrides will be offered.

“North Street is going to look really good,” Westfall said.

Another key part of the event will feature Route 47 businesses, many of which will stay open for the event.

It has been one of the signature portions of the event and the reason it is called the Christmas Stroll, as participants are invited to stroll through downtown to check out businesses. It also happens to be Small Business Saturday. Some businesses will offer kid-friendly activities, such as face painting or crafts.

are open along Main Street,” said Tracy Leach, the Elburn Chamber of Commerce administrator. “It should be fun. It’s just a merry, happy time of year.”

After the event, raffle winners will be announced at Schmidt’s, at 107 N. Main St. in Elburn. Tickets are on sale for $5 each or five for $20 at some downtown businesses. Tickets also will be available during the Christmas Stroll. Among the top prizes will be a helicopter tour over Chicago donated

by Schmidt’s; a smart TV

donated by Paisano’s Pizza; a BMX bicycle donated by Deck Solutions; and a Bose sound system donated by Da Capo Music Studio.

“Everything is a good prize,” said Kristin Paxinos, who is co-chairwoman of the Christmas Stroll with Westfall.

Proceeds from the raffle go toward the chamber’s Kaneland scholarship fund.

Westfall said last year’s raffle raised $3,000. Westfall said he is aiming to raise at least $5,000 and added, “We have the potential to reach $8,000 to $10,000.”

“It was such a great time last year,” Leach said. “We are hoping to top that.”

Driver charged with DUI after car crashes into house

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A driver who lost control of her SUV early Tuesday morning and hit a house on the 300 block of Pine Street in Batavia was charged with driving under the influence, police said.

The driver, identified as Mary Gosselin, 21, of the 1000 of block of Hodge Lane in Batavia, also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and disobeying a stop sign, Batavia Detective Kevin Bretz said.

“She was southbound on Prairie,” Bretz said. “Then there is a T-intersection at Pine Street, and she went straight instead of turning.

And there is a three-way stop there. We believe there was alcohol in the car.”

A driver who lost control of her SUV early Tuesday morning and hit a house on the 300 block of Pine Street in Batavia was charged with driving under the influence, police said. and taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva. A hospital spokesman has not yet provided a

condition report.

Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said after her

vehicle struck the northeast corner of the house, it became airborne and rolled

over in mid-flight, striking two unoccupied vehicles in the driveway.

Her vehicle pushed one vehicle into the other, and they smashed through the closed overhead door of the detached garage, Banker said. Still on its roof, the Murano landed partially atop the second vehicle, Banker said.

“We don’t know how fast she was going,” Bretz said.

According to a news release from the fire department, five occupants of the house were not injured and a city inspector determined the house and garage both were structurally safe.

A neighbor on Pine Street, Douglas Kimber, said he did not know anything had happened.

“I was unaware,” Kimber said. “I guess I slept through it all.”

Geneva plans special brush collection because of recent storms editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Because of the excessive amount of tree storm damage this month, the city of Geneva will be providing a one-time pickup for limbs and branches beginning Monday.

Each street will be covered once during this special collection, and residents should have their brush placed at the curb by 7 a.m. Monday.

The branches will be picked up by city staff and processed through a brush chipper.

Crews will not be returning for brush after the collection date.

The city’s 2015 monthly brush program ended earlier this month, but wind and heavy snow from two November storms has brought down a number of tree branches throughout Geneva. Brush must be stacked with the cut ends facing in one direction toward the curb or edge of the

pavement – not in the street.

Limbs cannot exceed 12 inches in diameter.

Residents should not tie bundles of branches with rope or wire, and no foreign materials, such as construction debris, fencing, lumber, wire, grass clippings, flowers and garden waste will be collected. Stumps and root systems also will not be picked up.

Because of nearly 8 inches of snow Friday and Saturday, the city postponed its final curbside leaf collection for

the southwest side of the city (Zone C) until Monday. Zone C is west of the Fox River, south of Route 38, south of Kaneville Road and south of Keslinger Road. Residents in this area should place their leaves and brush in separate piles.

A leaf map can be found on the city’s website at www.geneva.il.us. The curbside leaf collection already has been completed for Zones A and B. A citywide leaf bag program runs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 26. Refuse stickers are not required,

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Backed by the festive atmosphere of their grand opening event over the weekend, the owners of the new FUSE gym in Elburn showed off the new facility at 707 Herra St. FUSE is run by Tec and Heather Nanni and Heather Nanni’s sister, Jessica Humay. The Nannis live in North Aurora, and Humay lives in Elburn. The facility is in the space formerly occupied by Fit Mama, which moved to LaFox earlier this year, but it is larger because FUSE uses two units.

In one area, a TV screen on the wall displayed an array of numbers. Tec Nanni explained that gym members are able to use heart-monitoring devices, with their specific numbers displayed on the screen. He said that, and the fact FUSE offers child-care hours, will distinguish the gym from the existing businesses in the village.

Unlike the other gyms in town, it is not a 24-hour facility, although it is open seven days a week – 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The child care is available for those 6 months to 10 years old, from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, as well as 9 a.m. to noon on weekends.

Tec and Heather Nanni, both 29 years old, recently moved to North Aurora after living in Chicago, where they both worked as trainers at Equinox.

Heather Nanni said that when they found the location, “we fell in love with it and what we can do with it.” She said it is called FUSE because they would be “bringing together different elements of fitness under one roof,” as well as the concept of it being a spark.

“We want to get to know our members,” she said, adding, “it’s such a tight-knit community, and everyone is looking out for each other.”

said her father always wanted a gym, and when her sister and brother-in-law were moving to Kane County, the time was right.

“We just wanted it to be a very welcoming place with a community feel,” she said.

So far, Humay said, it is working out well. She said there are about 70 members at FUSE. Tec Nanni agreed.

“It’s been great,” he said.

“We really pride ourselves in providing an atmosphere that is comfortable and becoming a part of everyone’s life.”

St. Charles business offers free toys to needy families

Anderson, owner of Anderson’s Coins and Collectibles, at 221 W. Main St., St.

Charles, said he is doing it again this year.

Starting at 11 a.m. Dec. 2 through Dec. 23, those who need help buying Christmas gifts for their children are welcome, and he will help, Anderson said. But he also is appealing to the public to help by donating new or gently used toys to his store.

“Last year … I fully intended to do it by myself with my own merchandise and money,” Anderson said in a statement. “I never expected or even had the thought of others contributing to the cause. Together, we helped 235 kids get Christmas gifts.”

Anderson said that when

he was 9, his father was killed.

“So I have had some sad Christmases,” Anderson said.

LOCAL BRIEFS STC library helping residents in need

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library is joining in the holiday effort to help residents in need.

Beginning Tuesday and running through Dec. 13, St. Charles cardholders can participate in the library’s holiday amnesty program, which allows patrons to donate nonperishable food items in lieu of paying fines.

All donations collected will go to The Salvation Army food pantry. Nonperishable, unexpired food (no glass containers) should be placed in the collection bins near the circulation desk, and inform the desk staff so the fine will be cleared. Suggested items include canned fruits and vegetables; canned meats (chicken and tuna); canned stews, broth, chowder, chili, soups; cereal, boxed meals, such as Hamburger Helper or macaroni and cheese; beans; pasta and rice; and peanut butter.

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will host two snowmobile safety classes for anyone who wants to learn about snowmobiling.

Classes will be Saturday and Jan. 9. This class is intended for all ages and is for anyone interested in learning about snowmobiling.

By law, youths between the ages of 12 and 15 who wish to operate a snowmobile under the supervision of an adult must earn a snowmobile safety certificate. Eleven-year olds may take the class, but they cannot receive a certificate until they reach age 12.

The Saturday class meets at the Elburn Fire Department, 200 Route 38, Elburn. The second class will be Jan. 9 at Forest Preserve District administrative headquarters, 1996 S. Kirk Road, Suite 320, Geneva.

There is no charge.

Christine G. Anderson, age 78, of Elgin, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015. She was born on Nov. 23, 1936, in Beloit, Wisconsin, as the third child and only daughter of Carl David and Evelyn Hulda (Nelson) Gustafson.

Christine grew up in Clinton, Wisconsin, and graduated from Clinton High School in 1954. She received her nursing degree from Swedish American Hospital School of Nursing in Rockford, Illinois, and practiced nursing in Rockford, and later at Elmhurst Hospital, until 1966.

Christine married Robert T. Anderson on Jan. 18, 1958, at the First Covenant Church in Rockford, and they made their homes in the Chicago and Rockford areas, eventually settling in St. Charles, where she lived for 36 years, before moving to Elgin.

HealthWay Services of West Illinois has set up a dispensary on the city’s far east side at 3714 Illinois Ave., St. Charles.

“I’m very glad to be one of the pioneers of this unique industry in Illinois,” co-owner Dmitrey Stebley stated in the email.

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen want more time to explore alternatives to introducing a liquor tax in the city.

The aldermen voted, 12-2, to table an ordinance to create the liquor tax at its Committee of the Whole Meeting.

Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff and 1st Ward Alderman Mike O’Brien voted no on the motion.

Aldermen decided to table the ordinance after business owners shared their concerns Tuesday about a proposed liquor tax.

Anyone required to retain a liquor license in Batavia would be subject to a 2 percent tax effective Feb. 1 under the proposal.

The cost of alcohol has gone up substantially in Illinois for business the last couple of years, Pal Joey’s owner John Hamel said.

“It does put a burden on

the business owners in the city of Batavia,” Hamel said.

Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown said he understood the hardship this caused business owners and hoped the business owners understood the city needs the revenue.

If local business owners wanted to discuss another revenue generator, such as video gaming, he would be open to that discussion. The St. Charles City Council recently approved video gaming after St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina voted in favor of it after the aldermen had a 5-5 split vote.

“I know it got shot down, but times have changed,” Brown said of allowing video gaming in Batavia.

Wilson Street Tavern owner Mark Hogan said he still was unsure about implementing video gaming. He supported 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark’s suggestion to explore the possibility of an amusement tax.

Shodeen seeks input on proposal for the St. Charles Mall site

The developer – whose proposed St. Charles Towne Plaza was denied in 2010 – has submitted a concept plan that would turn the nearly 30-acre property into the Prairie Center.

“Something needs to happen,” Shodeen President David Patzelt said of the site, which is along Route 38 just east of Randall Road on the city’s west side.

A neighborhood meeting about the proposal is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Baker Community Center in downtown St. Charles, 101 S. Second St. Patzelt said it will be an update to the neighborhood meeting held in May and is “simply a courtesy” between Shodeen and its neighbors.

“We’re trying to be neighborly,” he said.

Public meetings about the concept plan are expected in January with the city, he said.

St. Charles hosts bird show KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Nearly two-dozen divisions of exotic birds – including canaries, finches and parrots – are expected to compete for awards next week in St. Charles.

The 67th annual National Bird Show is set for Dec. 3 to 5 at Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St. The show hall will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 4 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5, according to a news release.

The event is expected to feature some of the best exotic birds from around the country, the release states. It indicated that the birds are competing to win their divisions, of which there are 19.

The public is welcome, but the release states that viewing on Dec. 4 might be limited during judging.

Visitors may ask questions when in doubt about the show’s procedures.

The St. Charles Liquor Control Commission, which is led by Mayor Ray Rogina, reviewed the violations at its regular meeting last week. Á Salute Lounge and Grill, 2400 E. Main St., was cited Oct. 30 with allowing patrons to remain on or about the premises after 2 a.m.

The release indicates the establishment was fined $250 and also must pay $500 in court costs.

City documents show this was the business’ first liquor license violation.

The House Pub, 16 S. Riverside Ave., was cited Oct. 20 with two offenses – allowing patrons to remain on or about the premises after 2 a.m. and allowing the consumption of liquor to an intoxicated person, according to the release.

It was fined $500 and also must pay $500 in court costs, the release states.

This was The House Pub’s first liquor license violation in 2015. It previously had violations in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and, most recently, received a warning letter in 2014 about an employee consuming alcohol while working, documents show.

The chosen resident for the award will be recognized at the Annual Inspire Awards on Jan. 29, according to a news release.

Being named Citizen of the Year is one of the most distinguished honors given

to a local resident, the release stated.

To nominate someone for Citizen of the Year, please write a letter to the Batavia Chamber naming a person and explaining why the person deserves the honor.

By C.R. Walker A senior can continue to live alone at home, never get robbed, scammed or start the house on fire, but could still be in danger, or worst yet, could be killing him or herself.

There certainly are bad people who will do bad things to good people, especially targeting the sick and elderly, but studies have shown that a senior’s worst enemy might be in the mirror.

The terms are isolation and loneliness and studies have proven that both can harshly affect a senior. They can speed up the aging process and lead to depression and other dangerous health conditions, including premature death.

It’s likely that a senior’s home isn’t anywhere near as nice as a senior retirement community. Clutter, poor lighting, loose carpets and steep stairs can prove dangerous in simply moving around on a daily basis, making seniors vulnerable to

falls. You probably already know that a senior’s balance is nowhere near as good as it used to be, and a fall isn’t just a minor accident, they often result in extended hospitalizations and rehabilitations, and sadly, even death.

The bad guys target seniors and are constantly creating new scams and financial fraud. They prey on the elderly and some seniors have lost their entire life savings by one phone call while people impersonating utility companies and other organizations have robbed others.

Creating a Library of Congress for the digital age BLOOMBERG VIEW For 215 years, the Library of Congress has been collecting and organizing the world’s knowledge for the benefit of Americans. Now its longtime leader is exiting amid acrimony, its mission is increasingly muddled and – no small matter – Americans have Google. Is the world’s largest library still necessary?

The answer is yes. But as with every institution in the digital age, it needs to evolve. Its next leader, the 14th librarian of Congress, will face three big challenges.

The first is boring but critical. The library – with more than 100 million books and manuscripts, a $630 million budget and a staff of more than 3,000 – is sprawling, chaotic and increasingly archaic. As a withering report from the General Accounting Office found earlier this year, its technology is outdated, duplicative and disorganized. Hundreds of new flat-screen monitors have been sitting in a warehouse for years. Millions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted. Have you tried the website?

Fixing all this is a job for a competent bureaucrat. The library churned through five temporary chief information officers in three years before a permanent one was appointed in September. Its next leader should appreciate that modernizing the library’s technology – and hiring better IT staff – is a prerequisite for subsequent reforms, such as digitizing more of its archives and opening more of its research to the public.

tially more edifying. With many of the nation’s 16,000 public libraries shrinking, closing or morphing into social-service centers (often run by for-profit companies), it’s appropriate to ask whether such institutions still are essential to a 21st-century democracy. The next librarian should have a ready answer – they are – and be able to articulate a vision for libraries in the digital age.

That doesn’t mean awkwardly chasing Silicon Valley trends (the library’s mystifying attempt to collect everything on Twitter comes to mind). But it does mean applying the values that librarians have long upheld to a new era when they’re by no means assured. Helping make certain that authoritative scholarship and reliable information remain free to the public online should be an overriding priority.

Leading an effort to sensibly coordinate – and preserve – the digital collections of public and university libraries would be a good start.

Finally, the next librarian will have to confront the bedeviling issue of copyright reform. The U.S. Copyright Office, a part of the library since 1897, is a crucial component of the global digital economy. But its computer systems are dysfunctional; its staff is overwhelmed; and its decisions too often seem arbitrary. There’s a strong case that it would be better off as an independent agency. Although that’s a question for Congress, the broader issue of copyright – and its uneasy tension with free speech in the age of the remix – will require some clear and creative thinking from the next librarian.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Storm drains are not a disposal system

To the Editor: How we manage our yards can have a significant impact upon water quality. November is the season of leaf management for many of us. Here is a seasonal lesson.

The storm drain is not a garbage disposal.

That hole in the street with the metal grate that is next to the curb is a “storm drain.” Its intended purpose is to prevent flooding in streets during storm events. It must not be used as a disposal of anything. Most manufactured now are stamped with “Dump No Waste, Drains to River.”

The storm drain leads directly or indirectly (many through a detention basin) to the Fox River. The contents of what goes down that drain do not receive any treatment. That means the cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, fertilizer and pesticides that runoff from our yards with precipitation go to the Fox River as pollutants. The litter seems pretty obvious that it is inappropriate, and the chemicals (although unseen) do ecological

damage. Our yard’s leaves are a pollutant, too. The leaves can release nutrients that feed algae and ultimately reduce vital oxygen levels in the river. The leaves also can fill catch basins in the drainage system, causing flooding and expensive removal by municipalities.

It is actually illegal to put anything in a storm drain. Those neighbors that are blowing and raking their leaves into the street could be committing a criminal act. They could be subject to a littering fine, or even a more serious water quality violation.

Your municipality may allow homeowners to place leaves in the street for collection. That does NOT make it the best choice for leaf management.

The leaves that litter your yard are your tree’s gift to you as

a compostable material. You might chop them with the mower into small pieces that will decompose by next summer, use them as mulch or pile them for use as a soil amendment next growing season. If a homeowner chooses to place leaves in the street, they should try to keep them away from storm drains, and certainly not if rain is in the forecast. Treat leaf removal by vacuum just like trash removal; only put yours out right before the collection time.

Storm drains are NOT a disposal system for anything but precipitation. Please respect their purpose and protect the Fox River and its tributaries.

‘Out away from everything’ Girls teams get head start on tourney bonding

Set in motion a basketball team on a bus pointed in nearly any direction and you have a traveling revelation, especially if it’s November or December.

Early-season tournaments and their novelty of different gyms and foreign foes long have excited athletes and coaches. Because their season begins one week earlier, girls players get a leg up on the enjoyment.

“I think they like playing different teams that we don’t see, really, all season,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said.

“It just has that tournament feel, you know. The last game is 1s against 1s and 2s against 2s. So you’ve got something to work toward in four games.”

Guaranteed games vary by tournament and location, although the constant remains the same regardless.

Entering Tuesday, St. Charles East had started its five-game run in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving Tournament 0-3, but the sweat equity – if not jumpers – the Saints banked during the run still offered optimism for Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

FVIA grooms nationals-bound skaters, ice dancers QUICK READ Kevin Druley GENEVA – Keenan Prochnow realized his reality soon after helping to create it.

Might as well, considering he works so closely with connections.

By teaming with Laiken Lockley to win the novice pairs competition at last week’s U.S. Figure Skating Midwestern Sectionals in Cleveland, Prochnow would be going from training in the Tri-Cities to competing in the Twin Cities.

Prochnow and Lockley have their attention fastened on January’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., one of four teams to represent The Skate School at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“That’s exciting for us. We get to skate in that stadium,” said Prochnow, 17. “It’s a larger venue than we’ve ever skated before, so it should be interesting.”

The XCel Energy Center houses the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, and could indeed be a potentially intimidating place for young athletes.

Because FVIA skating director Rockne Brubaker, a former international pairs figure skater, aspires to help his athletes attain grand success, any such concerns are swiftly quashed.

Brubaker took the reins of the program in March 2014, and has served skaters of various skill levels alongside assistant Stefania Berton, a 2014 Olympian for Team Italy.

FVIA hosted a sectional around this time in 2014, with The Skate School producing one entry for nationals. A year later, the contingent is four times that, and everyone involved credits an enhanced atmosphere.

“The environment that the kids have to train in every day and interacting with one another, kind of pushing and motivating them, I think everyone’s kind of brought their skating to a new level,” Brubaker said. “It’s a very positive influence, and we’re starting to see some good and

Prochnow and Lockley, 13, first teamed up this summer.

The same goes for juvenile pairs tandem Ryan Bedard, 14, and Isabelle Martins, 9, who also were sectional champions.

Among the arena’s two nationals-bound ice dancing pairs, the senior team of Oleg Altukhov and Kseniya Ponomaryova, age 32 and 27, respectively, have a deeper history than the recently-formed novice pair of Caleb Niva, 17, and

Leah Krauskopf, 15.

Before connecting with FVIA, the team struggled to find a rink that provided as much ice time and a professional, on-site atmosphere.

There also is a fitness center above Fox Valley’s two rinks.

“Training, it’s a blast here,” Altukhov said. “We’re here all day, literally. We have really good coaches.”

Brubaker and Berton work alongside a group of ice dancing coaches that include Ponomaryova’s sister, Alina, and Jamie Whyte.

“It’s grown so quickly. And exponentially,” Whyte said.

“We’ve seen what the future is going to be. This is going to be a place to watch out for among the other training centers in the country, so it’s exciting.”

A very Steel Thanksgiving:

Chicago Steel captain Marcel Godbout grinned at the prospect of sharing the Thanksgiving table with his parents, brother, aunt and grandparents Thursday.

The Steel have the holiday off between USHL home games at Fox Valley Ice Arena

today and Friday, but Godbout isn’t zipping to his native Center Line, Mich., a northern suburb of Detroit. Instead, his host, or billet, family in Naperville is channeling the roots of the holiday and opening its doors, a common trend with the team.

“Absolutely,” said Godbout, a 19-year-old right wing.

“Even if guys don’t have somewhere to go, I know my billets are willing to have people over. … The hockey community is a good community, and it’s all good people.”

Steel coach Dan Muse, who with his parents, wife and two daughters will welcome a group of assistants and club officials to his St. Charles home, echoes the sentiment.

“It just speaks to the type of people that we have here as billets,” Muse said. “All of our billets have been fantastic since day one. They’ve been great in terms of the way they’ve welcomed our players, the way they treat them as their family, and also how they’ve opened their homes to the players’ parents and their families. I can’t say enough good things about the billets and how happy we’ve been with the whole situation.”

Right wing Marc Johnstone said his family is traveling from Cranford, N.J., to join him and his billets in a meal. Family travel is invariably more difficult for the club’s five international players. On the other end, the Steel feature two Illinoisans.

Defenseman Charlie Raith of Winnetka, who billets in Wayne, will travel to the North Shore to see his family, returning a longtime favor this season.

“I mean, I don’t go home very often, but it’s really easy for my parents to come out here,” Raith said. “I’m not home a lot, but they’re out here a lot, which is nice.”

The Steel are planning what Muse called “a pretty quick skate” Thursday morning before players and coaches disperse.

GURNEE – The LPGA announced Tuesday it officially has shifted the 2016 International Crown to the Merit Club after mutually parting ways with former host venue Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove this month.

The Crown is a biennial team match-play event featuring the top golfers from eight countries. It will be contested from July 21 to 24.

Rich Harvest Farms owner and founder Jerry Rich helped conceptualize the event, which debuted outside Baltimore in 2014 and is set to be held on South Korean soil in 2018. RHF hosted the 2009 Solheim Cup, a match-play tournament pitting the United States against Europe, the course’s initiation as a showcase for the global reach of women’s golf.

LPGA commissioner Michael Whan, a Naperville product, praised RHF during an August 2014 press conference. RHF hosted local government officials, corporate sponsors and LPGA Tour stars Belen Mozo (Spain) and Minjee Lee (Australia), among others, during a “One Year Countdown” to the Crown about three months ago.

“We were flattered by the many suitors with championship résumés who came forward with the hopes of pro-

viding the stage for this event,” Whan said in a statement. “The Merit Club has wonderful history and prestige and will offer a spectacular backdrop to see which country will take home the Crown.”

Built in 1992, the Merit Club course covers 320 acres and plays at a par of 72. The course hosted the 2000 U.S. Women’s Open, won by Karrie Webb.

Fletcher and 6-foot-8 sophomore Mick Sullivan will be a force inside, although Fletcher has developed the ability to shoot from the outside, as well. ... Outside shooting is a forte of Weber’s, who knocked down over 50 3-pointers last season. ... Senior guard Josh Ruddy and senior forward/center Mike Seraphin will play important roles and return from last season’s team. ... Currie expects a difficult schedule in the Chicago Catholic League this season, as playing the likes of defending Class 3A state champion St. Joseph, De La Salle and Fenwick will force the Cadets to “bring our A-game every single night,” Currie said..

Bottom line: Marmion will not have too many games where it can take it easy in a tough conference, so time will tell how the combination of experience and youth work together.

He was an HBR assistant when the program won Class 1A state crowns in 2009 and 2010. … Rosary’s sophomore team went 18-4 last season, and counts many contributors on the varsity.

Hot handles: A handful of players could help in the ballhandling department this season.

Bottom line: Rosary lost some key contributors from last season, but with Rasich aboard, it isn’t completely switching regimes. The GCAC will challenge the Royals, but also prepare them for postseason play.

Bottom line: Although nine seniors return from last year’s squad, the Bulldogs’ success will hinge on getting more contributions than from just Coffey and Thomas. If Batavia wants to be successful, other options will need to emerge offensively.

Ralston raved about the preseason play of 6-foot-2 junior guard Matt Johnston, a first-year varsity player he called a “jack of all trades.” ... Junior Cole Navigato, the 6-4 younger brother of standout Nate Navigato, who guided last season’s team, has earned the right as the point guard this season, though Ralston says the first few weeks will tell the tale for many positions. ... “There are always surprises in the first few weeks,” Ralston said. “It happens every single season, but we just hope those surprises are pleasant ones.”

Hot handles: Navigato earned the point guard duties heading into the Vikings’ trip to Crystal Lake Central for its Thanksgiving tournament, an event Geneva won last season.

Bottom line: Geneva lost more than any team in the area as far as scoring went, so it is not the same team that went to state. While there’s opportunity for players to emerge, it seems that the play of Fuzak will need to be very strong for the Vikings to be successful.

Forte is set to make his first start since injuring his medial collateral ligament against the Vikings on Nov. 1.

Forte warmed up before Sunday’s Broncos game and could’ve played, he said, but the Bears declined with a short week ahead of Thanksgiving at Lambeau Field.

28 Long-term use of osteoporosis drugs can cause rare fractures

Note to readers: This column is an update of one that ran originally in August 2012.

Dear Dr. K: I’m taking

a pill for osteoporosis because my doctor says stronger bones will reduce my risk of fractures.

But a friend recently told me some osteoporosis medicines actually cause fractures. Can you un-confuse me?

Dear Reader: I know what you’re referring to, and it is confusing – even for doctors. So let me try to make it less confusing.

Osteoporosis does make your bones more susceptible to fractures, and a group of drugs called bisphosphonates do treat osteoporosis successfully. These drugs include alendronate (Fosamax), ibandronate (Boniva), risedronate (Actonel) and zoledronic acid (Reclast). People typically remain on these drugs for years.

There is no doubt these drugs work. They slow and even reverse the thinning of bones.

They reduce the risk of common fractures, such as hip fractures, by 50 percent or more.

However, paradoxically, these medicines can cause two rare types of fractures: a fracture of the jaw and fractures of the middle of the thigh bone. That’s particularly true in people taking bisphosphonate drugs for a long time.

How long should the drugs be taken? They definitely reduce common fractures in people taking them for three to five years. There is no strong evidence they continue to work if continued beyond five years, but it’s reasonable to believe they might.

After talking with my colleagues here at Harvard Medical School who are experts on this question, here’s what I’m telling my patients. If a person has a relatively high risk for developing a common type of hip frac-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff ture (which involves the upper part of the thigh bone) or a fracture of the vertebrae (bones of the spine), he or she should stay on the drugs. If the risk is relatively low, he or she should consider going off the drugs after five years.

You can estimate your risk of fractures by using a tool from the World Health Organization called FRAX. The FRAX tool includes information about you, including the T score of your bone density test.

The T score compares the density of your bone to the bone of the average young adult. (I have information about the FRAX on my website, www. askdoctork.com.)

To boil it down, I am telling my patients if they have been on bisphosphonates for less than five years, stay on them. On the other hand, if they’ve been on the medicines for five years or more and they have: • a T score that is lower than minus-2.5 at the hip, stay on the medicines.

• a T score that is lower than minus-2, and they have had a fracture of one of the vertebrae in the past, stay on the medicines.

• a T score that is higher than minus-2 and no past fractures, stop the bisphosphonates and check their bone density test in six to 12 months.

This is general advice, rather than a specific recommendation for you.

There may be aspects of your personal medical history I don’t know. You should talk to your doctor to find out what’s right for you.

Girl’s mother pressures her to reunite with lying ex-boyfriend Dr. Wallace: I’m 19. I was going out with a guy a couple of years ago, but I broke up with him because he was the world’s biggest liar. He told me he was Catholic (I’m Catholic) but he was really born Jewish, and he said he was only 19 but he turned out to be 22.

Now my mom is convinced he is really a worthwhile human being, and she is pressuring me to give him another chance. I am not convinced, and my instinct is to not give him a second chance.

I’ve tried to encourage her to smile more and to try something new she might really have an interest in because she would probably do it well if it were something she likes.

It is very painful for me to see this beautiful young lady having very little self-confidence.

for specific accomplishments.

Instead of just telling her she did a good job cleaning her room, be specific and tell her something you particularly liked about how she organized her shoes or books or displayed her collection of dolls. You also can leave her surprising little notes about how you enjoyed shopping with her on Saturday, or she looked really nice in the new sweater.

When a task has not been done correctly, never scold about it, but offer helpful hints to improve.

Remember scolding only creates resentment and fortifies low self-esteem.

Encourage your daughter to attend school and church functions so she can make new friends, and encourage her to invite them home for a social activity. Always have a smile for your daughter and give lots of hugs. Tell her how proud you are of her. Positive reinforcement is an important part of building confidence. This is an extended process, and you shouldn’t expect instant success. Don’t nag your daughter, but be alert for those opportunities when a little encouragement from you might help her decide to take a social risk. In time, with this routine, your beautiful daughter will gain self-confidence and blossom into an active teen with many friends.
