Dryden addresses school district controversies

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – During an interview on the Internet radio station Fox Valley Voice on Monday, former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden spoke about his plans to run for the Batavia School District 101 Board next year.

“I want to create an environment that is really collaborative,” said Dryden, who taught for Batavia School District 101 for 21 years. “If you have a conversation publicly, things will start to change.”

There are three seats open on the Batavia School Board in

April’s election. The terms of board President Cathy Dremel, along with the terms of board members Gregg Hodge and Melanie Impastato, will expire next year.

School board members in early October unanimously approved the retirement of Dryden, who made local and national headlines last year when he instructed his students that they had the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves before answering an inclass survey about emotional and at-risk behavior.

During Monday’s interview, Dryden said he wants to run for Batavia School Board to “keep involved in the education pro-

cess for the kids.”

“It has nothing to do with me,” he said.

During the interview, Dryden also commented on school district administrators.

“Public schools are run by building administrators,” he said. “What administrators want more than anything are no complaints.”

Dryden said that in the days John leading up to his retirement, Dryden he was facing a disciplinary action from a parent who complained about a lesson he gave on the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Dryden said he was facing a three-day, unpaid suspension for teaching an unauthorized lesson.

The district told him he would have to use only school board-approved sources in the

future, Dryden said. But, he said, the school board’s only approved sources are textbooks.

Batavia School District 101 has not specifically addressed Dryden’s allegations. Last week, the district issued a statement that, “Mr. Dryden’s retirement was completely voluntary and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the BPS101 Board of Education and the Batavia Education Association.”

The school board voted in May 2013 to issue a written warning of improper conduct to Dryden for his actions regarding the in-class survey.

Before the board issued the notice, then-Batavia Superintendent Jack Barshinger docked Dryden a day’s pay.

Jon Gaspar was the sole board member to vote “no” regarding that issue. The notice warned Dryden not to provide legal advice to students, among other things.

Event focuses on shopping at local, smaller stores

bschory@shawmedia.com If Black Friday belongs to big box stores and Cyber Monday is for online shopping, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is making the shop-small concept big with Small Business Saturday.

Now in its fifth year, the momentum begun by American Express to encourage shopping at small, independently-owned businesses has hit more than 2,000 communities – including those in the Fox Valley. Those with American Express cards can log into www.shopsmall. com to see all businesses that are participating.

Jenna Sawicki, the marketing and development coordinator for the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, has been encouraging participation in what is considered the kick-off weekend to the holiday shopping season. Its website lists participating businesses.

“I rallied businesses to participate,” Sawicki said. “I passed out 300 tote bags, floor mats, balloons and buttons to small businesses in St. Charles.

I sent out a newsletter to encourage sales and specials to go on that day.”

What works to St. Charles’ advantage is the partnership’s Holiday Homecoming, which starts Friday and continues all day Saturday, with activities and the Electric Christmas Parade on Main Street, she said.

Last year, the two events brought an estimated 15,000 people to the city’s downtown area, Sawicki said, and many shopped at the downtown’s small businesses.

“It’s a social event, but people have a chance to shop local that day,” Sawicki said. “After Thanksgiving, you go to the big box stores and get deals, but shopping on Small Business Saturday is supporting small local businesses. They do their shopping and support their local economy.”

In 2013, consumers who were aware of the promotion spent $5.7 billion at independent merchants the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a 3.6 percent increase from 2012, Sawicki said.

Various studies show a multiplier effect when shopping locally at independent stores, generating secondary local spending.

Every $100 spent at local stores returns $68 to the local economy. An additional $45 to $48 also continues to contribute to the local economy in secondary local spending – through the purchase of goods and services, and donations to local charities.

For every $100 spent at a big chain store, $43 stays in the local economy and $14 goes to secondary local spending.

Joi Cuartero, executive director of Main Street Batavia, said when money is spent locally, it tends to stay in the community.

“A lot of small businesses use each other for different vendors,” Cuartero said. “The independent retail dollar goes so much farther in their community than they would for a national chain.”

American Express will give back up to $30 in statement credits to card-holders who spend $10 to register their card at www.shopsmall.com for the promotion and charge $10 or more on their card at up to

three small businesses on Saturday. Registration will be open through Saturday night, unless the program registration limit is reached sooner, according to American Express.

Among those St. Charles businesses that take American Express are JP Jewelers, 151 S. First St., Dick Pond Athletics, 303 N. Second St., and Arcedium Coffeehouse, 60 Indiana St. Petterec said his holiday sale at JP Jewelers starts on Black Friday and continues to Christmas Eve, but on Saturday, the store will offer hot cider and cookies.

“They need to support [small

businesses] if they want us to stay,” Petterec said.

Sawicki said any small business open that day with a promotion or sale – even if they don’t take American Express – would be contributing to the movement.

“We really pushed it this year,” Sawicki said. “We are hoping they will see how great it could possibly be.”

Among those participating in Geneva are Cocoon, 212 S. Third St., Windsong Trading, 715 E. State St., and James from the Kitchen, 309 W. State St. “Does [Small Business Saturday] make a difference? The first couple of years, no,” said Sherry McGowan, owner of Cocoon, which features home goods and gifts. “Not a lot knew about it, but now the word is getting out.”

Russ Brewer of Windsong Trading, a retail store featuring imported fair-trade jewelry and gifts, said the store will offer 10 percent off for every shopper, and 15 percent off for those who use their American Express card, starting on Black Friday and continuing through Dec. 5.

offer everything at 10 percent off, with a two-for-one-sale on his handmade dog treats, all this week, including Saturday.

In Batavia, Olmstead’s TV and Appliance, 221 W. Wilson St., takes American Express and will be part of the program.

“We’re promoting, starting out Thursday night and through the entire weekend,” owner Gene Olmstead said.

Jane Abe, director of membership for the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce, which includes businesses in North Aurora, said they were promoting Small Business Saturday for any small business that is going to be open on that day.

“Any small independent business – restaurants, retail stores or an optometrist – that is basically going to be open that Saturday, we want people to know what they are having, what they are offering or promoting,” Abe said.

In Elburn, having the Christmas Stroll that Saturday evening with so many local businesses open, coincides with the promotion.

But Karen Park, president of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce, said the organization already promotes support for local businesses through its Shop Elburn First campaign.

“You have to promote your community,” Park said. “You invest the dollars ... so it stays here.”

The massage parlor-related ordinance includes a defined application process with recommended licensing and application fees of $250 and an additional $50 charge for fingerprinting, Keegan said. The ordinance also calls for peri-

odic inspections through code enforcement.

Some of the multiple exemptions for the licensing requirements include physicians, chiropractors, athletic trainers, barbers and massage therapists who administer massages only to the back and shoulder region of fully-clothed patrons in upright massage chairs, according to the ordinance.

The ordinances will next head to the full City Council for a vote at an upcoming meeting.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee Monday unanimously approved two ordinances updating rules for tobacco businesses and massage parlors.

The Government Services Committee voted 9-0 at its normal Monday meeting in favor of recommending each of the two ordinances for approval to the St. Charles City Council.

St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan was at the

meeting to present the ordinances and take questions. If approved by the City Council, both ordinances would move oversight and due process of violations to the city’s existing Liquor Control Commission.

“In terms of staff time, it makes sense,” 5th Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis said during the meeting. “[The liquor commission already] meets the third Thursday of every month. If you have another commission, then you have another set of meetings.”

Judge denies bond reduction in marijuana case

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County judge on Monday denied a motion to reduce bond for a man accused of having a large-scale indoor marijuana grow operation at his St. Charles Township house.

David Robbins, 44, was charged with two drug-related Class 1 felonies and one Class X felony after authorities this month reportedly seized 463 live plants and more than 6,000

grams of packaged marijuana from the property.

Robbins has been held in lieu of $150,000 bail since his Nov. 12 arrest. He would need to post $15,000 bond to be released.

His lawyer, Glenn Sowa, on Monday asked Judge James Hallock to lower bail to $75,000 and bond to $7,500 – an amount Robbins’ family was prepared to post via credit card, he said.

Sowa said his client is not a flight risk because of his “many ties” to the community.

Robbins is a married father of

three, has family – including his parents and sister – in the area, and is a lifelong Illinois resident except for his time spent in the U.S. Army, Sowa said.

Assistant David State’s Attorney Bridget SabRobbins bia contended $150,000 bail was appropriate and noted in her arguments that Robbins’ property in St. Charles Township has been

condemned and not a place where he can live.

She also opposed his family posting bond with a credit card because Robbins must prove that money comes from a legitimate source.

In his decision to deny the bond reduction, Hallock pointed to state statute, which indicates the full street value of the drugs seized must be considered.

Authorities have said the estimated street value of the marijuana and grow operation was

about $500,000.

Hallock said the current bail was neither excessive nor unreasonable.

In this case, the judge added, posting bond with a credit card would act as an “artificial curtain” that would keep the prosecution from learning the source of the funds.

If a credit card is used to post bond, disclosure would be needed about who would pay that bill and how, Hallock said.

The case is due back in court at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 3.

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Craig Collins, Technology Director Elizabeth Janowiak and Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Teaching Patricia O’Neil all announced their intention to retire, according to a personnel report at the Monday night school board meeting.

Collins has been with the district 29 years, Janowiak 18 years and O’Neil nine years, officials said.

“It’s really sad to see them go – Craig and Patti and Elizabeth – they have done such excellent work in our district,” Superintendent Kent Mutchler said. “They just do such an excellent job, all three of them. We hate to see them go.”

In a statement, officials announced the appointment of Andrew Barrett as assistant superintendent of learning and teaching, effective July 1.

CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen on Friday was placed on paid administrative leave, Village Attorney Bill Braithwaite confirmed on Monday.

The leave became effective Friday afternoon and was the decision of Campton Hills Village President Patsy Smith, Braithwaite said. Smith on Monday referred questions about Johnsen to Braithwaite.

“I’m not going to make any comment as to the reason for the administrative leave,” Braithwaite said in a phone interview Monday.

Johnsen did not return a phone message by Monday afternoon seeking comment on her leave.

Walk for Kaneville leader Pat Hill raises about $3K

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Cool temperatures and light rains did not stop about 80 people on Sunday from walking for Kaneville Village President Pat Hill.

The 1.5-mile walk was called Pink for Purple, and it raised $3,066 for Hill, who is battling stage 4 breast cancer.

The event started and ended at Hill’s Country Store – nicknamed “the Purple Store” for its exterior color – at 2S133 Harter Road in Kaneville.

“I’m totally overwhelmed – this is awesome,” Hill of the event.

Hill led the walk seated on the back of a golf cart and pulled names for several raffle prizes when the walkers finished outside of her store.

Many of the attendees talked to Hill and hugged her, including Christine Schirtzinger, founder and lead coach of Girls Gone Tri. The Tri-Cities based triathlon group organized the event after its members found out about Hill’s diagnosis.

“We wanted to do the walk to show her that we’re here for her, and we’re going to be here for her,” Schirtzinger said.

Sugar Grove resident Matt Treter said his triathlon training rides are not complete without a trip to the Purple Store. He participated in Sunday’s walk with his wife, Tifanie, who is a Girls Gone Tri member.

Matt Treter called the store an oasis and said Hill is a ray of sunshine.

Other customers of the store also participated in the walk, including Kathryn McCoy of North Aurora. She was at the event with her husband, Jason, and son, Maxwell, 8.

The McCoys said they are looking forward to the soldout Dec. 6 benefit for Hill at the Fisherman’s Inn, located at 43W901 Main Street Road in Blackberry Township.

“Pat’s always been so nice and friendly, and she always gives back to the community,” Kathryn McCoy said.

Hill said her store has always been about her customers, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She said her 24-year-old daughter Alexa has been a big help, taking some of her shifts and looking after the store.

Hill said some days are better than others, but she still puts in time at Village Hall every day. She continues to attend the Village Hall meetings because she said they do not conflict with her chemotherapy treatment.

“I’m going to take each day as it comes,” Hill said after the event. “I’m not gonna let it get me down.”

week later, I visited Mavis at her office in Aurora and had my first experience with acupuncture. The first thing Mavis did was present me with a stack of health forms to complete, and I expected the usual yes or no questions. But, these were unique.

The forms were not only trying to assess the potential for problems based on prior health conditions or those of my family, but a more in-depth understanding of my body.

Questions like, “Rate your level of satisfaction with your weight, stress, ability to sleep, etc.” It was more about me as an individual, not what they think I am based on family history.

I don’t know about you, but when I go to the doctor or dentist, the receptionist asks for the forms back and I never see them again, and I don’t know if my doctor even looks at them.

Mavis was different. She looked through all the answers, asked me for clarification on a couple of things and really spent time trying to understand how she could help me. Mavis really cared about me.

We decided that I just needed a good tune-up and some stress relief. So, into the treatment room we went. She began at my left foot, traveled all the way to the top of my head, then back down to my right foot, approximately 25 needles in all.

No pain, maybe a twitch or two, but that’s about it. Then she says, just relax for the next 20 minutes and try to take a nap. A nap, at 6 p.m.? Really, Mavis? I have dinner to make and laundry to ... do ... zzz. Needless to say, I am now a regular at Inner Harmony Acupuncture. Smart business tactic, Mavis.

Each day I have the opportunity to meet with local business owners to learn more about their businesses and to see what the Batavia Chamber of Commerce can do to help them be successful. The businesses in our membership are very diverse and offer an array of products and services. This week, I would like to share with you a couple of meetings that strike me as being unique.

In interviewing candidates for the chamber’s annual Ole Award, I met with the general manager of Nutegrity, Scott Springer. The business has invested nearly $200,000 in modifying its building to accommodate a “tank farm.”

This tank farm looks much like a distillery room in a brewery – big, above ground, cylindrical tanks. But it isn’t hops and barley in the Nutegrity tanks, it is fish oil.

Believe it or not, Batavia is home to one of the largest producers of fish oil for the purpose of nutritional supplement.

Nutegrity’s parent company, Omega Protein, begins the process off of the East Coast.

It sends out airplanes to spot schools of the menhaden fish.

Once spotted, they deploy boats to the location, where they catch millions of menhaden each trip.

Once back on shore, the fish are processed, and the oil is collected. Tanker trucks are filled with the oil, and they head to the processing plant here in Batavia. In Batavia, they filter out mercury and other unwanted chemicals, and then distill the oil. This high-temperature, high-vacuum distillation prepares the oil for consumption. The distilled oil is then sold to packaging companies that complete the cycle before it ends up on the shelves of the vitamin/supplement aisle in our local stores. So, if you are in the market for omega-3, support your local producer.

My next encounter relates to health in a different way. This is not a pill that you take, but a needle that you poke. Mavis Bates, owner of Inner Harmony Acupuncture, recently walked into the Batavia Chamber office to invest in a membership.

Neither Stacie Barnett nor I had experience with acupuncture, so Mavis offered us a free session. Stacie is a bit nervous around needles, so she declined.

Animal shelter’s reopening highlights healthier habitat

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Cindy Struck of St. Charles brought Rosie, an English pointer-beagle mix, with her Saturday to the grand reopening of the newly remodeled Anderson Animal Shelter in St. Charles Township.

She had tentatively chosen little Rupert, a Chihuahua mix, from the shelter, but she had to see if the new dog and Rosie would get along.

Struck said she had to put her Jack Russell terrier down six weeks ago, and now she wanted to adopt another dog.

“I gave myself a little time, and I really want to save another life,” Struck said. “I saw Rupert [online], and I fell in love with him. I came here [Friday] and spent some time with him, and I brought my dog back today … to see how they would do.”

Anderson Animal Shelter had been closed for three months while construction took place. Its reopening drew many supporters to see the updated

They were at the shelter’s grand reopening Saturday after it was closed for renovations this summer. building, which director Beth Drake said will make the facility much healthier for the dogs, cats, workers and volunteers, as well as for the people who come to adopt pets.

“We have new cages for the cats. We have dog suites, instead of dog cages, and we have seven new cat colonies,” Drake said.

“This is so they can interact with each other – they can climb on things and play with each other and be cats.”

The dog suites are about twice the size they were before, which means they can also hold a crate that dogs can sleep in or just go in for a break, Drake said.

“There’s a lot of people here

today; you’ll see some of the dogs that are a little bit on the scared side going into their crates,” Drake said.

The individual cat areas have ledges and hiding places so the cats can choose if they want to be out or hidden away, she said.

“The problem with the stainless steel cages that we had before, [the cats] were literally in this 2-foot-by-2-foot metal box,” Drake said. “If they wanted to be out of sight, there was no place to go. So they would get very frustrated and fearful. This is healthier, no question.”

Drake said the facility has about 60 cats and kittens and 30 to 40 dogs. During construction, the animals were relocated to foster homes and a temporary shelter in Batavia.

Cindy Green, a member of the shelter’s board of directors, said the $660,000 remodeling project was well worth it.

“It’s wonderful,” Green of Elgin said. “It’s historic. We’ve been hyping for this day for years and years, and here it is.

The animals will be happier.

The community will be happier.

Meanwhile, things looked good for Rupert to have a new home with Rosie.

Rupert put a paw on Rosie’s shoulder, and the two put their noses together briefly while Struck told Jon Koffenberger, the shelter’s animal care manager, that she would put Rosie in the car while they finished the adoption paperwork.

“There’s nothing better than adopting a dog – or a cat,” Struck said.

Now GOP must respond to Obama’s immigration plan For a guy who finally was fulfilling a promise he first made more than six years ago, President Barack Obama didn’t seem too happy about it. Maybe that’s because he knows his plan to defer deportations for about 5 million undocumented immigrants, outlined in Thursday night’s speech, is a partial and temporary fix that is likely to make Washington a meaner, smaller place.

His speech had all the usual hallmarks of a political set piece: the appeals to American ideals of equality and opportunity, the vignette about a striving immigrant, even a clumsy bipartisan invocation of his predecessor. His only real emotion, however, came in a flash of irritation at criticism from congressional Republicans that he was overstepping his authority. “To those members of Congress,” he snapped, “I have one answer: Pass a bill.”

Easier said than done, as he knows all too well. It was also a tacit admission of the main weakness of his plan.

Whatever its merits – and they are considerable – it is no substitute for congressional action. It covers only half the population of undocumented immigrants, and does not increase visa levels to allow more immigrants of all skill levels to come to the United States. Perhaps most important, to reiterate the point, it is only temporary. The next president could rescind these orders.

Obama would have done better to give the new Republican Congress a chance to take up immigration reform rather than issuing an executive order. But he didn’t, and now the ball is squarely in the Republicans’ court.

What can they do? They can shut down the government, but that would be shooting themselves in the foot, because the American people rightly blame Congress for such extremism. They can try to prevent the president from carrying out his orders by withholding funding from some federal agencies, which will draw a presidential veto. They can use Obama’s action as an excuse to do nothing on other major issues – say, tax reform or trade – but that would be cutting off their nose to spite their face. And they can complain endlessly, which they no doubt will do anyway.

They do have another option, the one they told voters they wanted most of all: the chance to govern.

It’s time for Republicans to put up or shut up. By now it’s clear what they’re against – the dreaded “a” word (amnesty). But what are they for? They can’t avoid that question any longer. Now that they are the majority party in both houses, they don’t have the luxury of sitting back and criticizing everything that Democrats propose. Now they’re in charge. They need to start acting like it.

If their criticism of Obama’s executive action is to have any credence, they need to back it up with action of their own, and that means beginning the work of formulating a bill, and holding hearings early in 2015. A great starting point, from both a policy and political standpoint, is the bipartisan bill the Senate passed last year.

Obama has made the first move, and neither he nor Republicans seem too happy about it. But the next move is theirs. The new Congress needs to respond constructively – because this problem is a long way from being fixed.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A wonderful day To the Editor: I went to Apple Villa for a free breakfast on Nov. 11, expecting to pay for my juice and coffee as in the past.

When the waitress came by with what I thought would be the check for the beverages, she told me that someone had paid for my beverages. She could not tell me who it was.

We talked about our times in the service, also discussed wives and my children. He left to meet his wife. I told him if he went to the theater on Randall Road, he could see the movie “Fury” for free, and his wife would get a free popcorn.

I asked the waitress for my check and was told the veteran from Afghanistan had paid my bill.

Thank you.

My wife and I did go to the movie “Fury” that night and

received my free ticket and my wife her popcorn.

I participated with the American Legion of Geneva at 11 a.m.

After that, we went to thank the veterans at what used to be called the Geneva Care Center.

We found out about their time in service and gave them information on our service times.

It was a wonderful day.

Saints stay ‘tough and focused’ late

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East enjoyed far less success from the perimeter during the second half of Monday’s season-opening boys basketball game than the first half.

The Saints still spent much of the waning moments trying to keep the ball on the outside and away from East Aurora defenders. That strategy and Cole Gentry’s success at the back end of it helped preserve a 7971 Saints’ win in Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament play.

Almost half of Gentry’s game-high 30 points came from fourth-quarter free throws. He went 14 for 16 from the line in the final eight minutes, providing crucial distance as the Tomcats kept slashing at what appeared to be a comfortable Saints lead.

“We’re moving the ball. It’s not only me that has the ball, we’re still moving it,” Gentry said. “But if I have it … the game plan is to head toward the basket and then make decisions based on that. So that’s what we tried to do.”

In most cases, Gentry, a senior guard, left East Aurora with little option other than to foul.

Given his prowess at darting past defenders and getting to the rim, that beats the alternative.

“Cole’s our human press-breaker,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “He’s just fast and can handle the ball, and it’s tough for anyone to guard him.”

Vaca roared to a 24-point outing in his first performance of the season, lifting the Kaneland boys basketball team to a 66-42 win against Chicago Marine Academy on Monday in the opening game of Batavia’s Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic.

Vaca scored Kaneland’s first 12 points of the third quarter as the Knights blew open the game after leading by six at the break.

“It was pretty much close to that point, a close game, so I just felt like I had to step up and make some shots to [widen] the margin,” Vaca said.

Vaca’s third quarter surge was highlighted by a four-point play that bumped the Knights’ lead to 38-24 with 4:34 left in the third quarter.

Vaca played sparingly in the fourth quarter as the Knights had the game in hand but was on the floor long enough to raise his profile. After Kaneland graduated astrong senior class last year, Vaca is transforming from role player to potential go-to guy, and realizes the ex-

“It just kind of comes along with it,” Vaca said. “ … I’m sure [teams] will focus in on me more. That’s kind of good and bad at the same time. I might not score as much, but I’ll be able to pass to my teammates, and they’re certainly capable of scoring.”

Center Jacob Gomes – who suffered a season-ending injury in last year’s Windmill City Classic – added nine points and eight rebounds.

“It was a team effort,” Gomes said. “We all had to set screens and play hard to get [Vaca] open and let him do what he does best, which is to score.”

Junior point guard Mark Lilly showcased strong ball-handling skills and added eight

points for the Knights.

Vaca scored half of his 24 points in the first half as the Knights claimed a 26-20 lead at the break.

In the nightcap, host Batavia showcased a deep bench in starting the season with a 68-59 win against Wheaton Warrenville South.

While projected standouts Chasen Peez (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Canaan Coffey (13 points) did their part, the Bulldogs’ bench contributed 26 points to the cause, including some crucial second-half baskets.

Coach Jim Nazos inserted a brand-new five into the game midway through the first quarter, and the Bulldogs’ reserves soon staked a claim for extended playing time.

Junior point guard Kamontez Thomas and junior forward John Fitch paced the bench brigade, adding seven points apiece.

“We went five in and five out, and there was no remorse or no hesitation thinking all five of those guys are going to do what they can do,” Nazos said.

The Bulldogs extended a five-point halftime lead to 5239 by the end of a strong third quarter but the Tigers chipped away, coming as close as 63-59 late on a basket by Wheaton Academy transfer Josh Ruggles (19 points).

But Batavia senior guard Jacob Roberts practically iced it with 1 minute to go, hoisting and hitting an open but brazen 3-pointer to push the lead to 6659.

“He deserved to hit that shot but we also have to coach up because there’s a possibility of that missing and them going down and cutting it,” Nazos said. “So we’ll coach him on that … but it takes a certain character to pull that shot. He’s worked really hard in the offseason. It was karma that he hit it.”

Batavia also was solid on the glass, with Fitch and Thomas joining Peez to allow the Bulldogs a solid rebounding edge.

The good news: a majority of boys athletes train yearround or compete for club teams – in some cases those guided by their high school coaches.

North junior Monica Guyett, for one, knows her boys counterparts will benefit from the tutelage already in championship mode.

“With Rooney, it’s intense,” Guyett said, “but it’s a good kind of intense.”

Grappling with gobbling: Thanksgiving remains a secular holiday, but for many in prep wrestling circles, it’s hard to consider the day of

excesses a celebration of any kind.

This week brings the first competition of the IHSA wrestling season, meaning athletes bent on making weight face stiff temptation to break their diets.

The consensus in Chronicle-area circles: the more veteran makeup of a wrestling room, the smaller the challenge.

“As much as I want to eat, it’s almost like I can wait until the weekend,” St. Charles East senior 152-pounder Keone Derain said. “It’s my last year doing it. I’ve got next year and years to come, so one more year’s not going to hurt.”

East coach Jason Potter – a former Saints and Illinois standout who grew up in a

wrestling family – happily relates.

“I guess it’s kind of bad that I don’t feel sorry for them, because I [held back] my entire life,” Potter said.

“Thanksgiving for the Potter family was really not a big deal. Because even when I finished, my little brother was doing it. Before I did it, my older brother was doing it. So my mom was always really good about not tempting us.

So I don’t understand the whole gluttonous aspect of Thanksgiving.

“And to this day, you know, I eat some of the traditional stuff, but the whole gorge yourself and fall asleep on the coach watching football thing, I think these guys can wait until Saturday or Sunday

if that’s what they really want to do.”

Spoken like a guy who once gathered ’round to eat scallops on Thanksgiving.

At any rate, Potter concludes his holiday thoughts with advice applicable to anyone – singlet-wearers or otherwise.

“What it weighs when you put it in your body is what you’ve got to assume it’s going to make you weigh when it’s in your body,” Potter said. “So just eat small and smart.”

“We came out in our press and looked good offensively and defensively.”

Janie McCloughan scored 14 points to lead three Vikings in double figures.

Novak contributed eight rebounds, while Reynolds swish three 3-pointers.

“It was good to see Abby come out. She put together a real good game. Good leader-

ship,” Meadows said. “Same with Courtney.”

Swimmers typically bristle at any joke or suggestion that reduces their sport to a recreational dip in the community pool or a day at the beach.

Considering his experience and pedigree – most recently a co- runner-up team finish at the IHSA girls swimming and diving state meet in Evanston this past weekend – Rosary coach Bill Schalz has license to deliver such analogies.

“I always tell people it’s kind of like spending 14 weeks building a really cool sand castle, and then on Sunday, somebody shows up, you show up on Monday and it’s been destroyed,” Schalz said. “Now you’ve got to start all over again.”

Schalz was addressing the annual challenge of starting the boys season just a couple days after the girls season concludes its season at state.

Boys practices opened statewide Monday, with Schalz presiding over the ceremonial first yards at Marmion while longtime counterparts Joe Cabel (St. Charles East) and Rob Rooney (St. Charles North) doubled down, too.

“It is what it is,” Schalz said. “It’s hard. Because you go from the state meet to Day 1 in 48 hours. It’s tough.

You’re coming off a state team that’s got a shot to win state to be going back Day 1, and you’ve got to start the process all over again.

“It’s a different animal, different challenges, different opportunities with the guys’ team. I look forward to coaching the guys, but, boy, there is no break. You just go right into it. I don’t want to make it to sound like I don’t look forward to boys season; I

A chair decorated with Egyptian hieroglyphics, stylized birds and sphinx heads can probably be dated from its Egyptian Revival style. But furniture designs have been through several Egyptian revivals.

One started in about 1800, after Napoleon battled in Egypt. Another lasted from the 1830s to the 1850s following great archeological finds in Egypt. A third short revival, from 1895 to the early 1900s, combined Egyptian Revival with elaborate Victorian styles. Egyptian-style furniture seen most often today dates from the 1920s-30s, after the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. Art Deco designs joined Egyptian-inspired animals and symbols to create a totally new look.

Although Egyptian Revival jewelry from that period has been going up in price, the furniture has lost favor and is selling at bargain prices. An early 1900s chair with bone inlay and a very Egyptian-looking carved wooden back shaped like an Anubi (the Egyptian jackal-headed man who was god of the dead) sold at Neal Auction Co. in New Orleans for $777. Perhaps the symbolism of the Egyptian god was not wanted by many 2014 bidders. *** Q: My grandmother, who was born in China, came to this country in 1953 and brought a stuffed bird-of-paradise with

her. I have it stored in my cedar chest, and it is still in very good condition. Can I sell it in the United States or is this now illegal?

A: Most birds-of-paradise are found in New Guinea, although a few live on nearby islands and in eastern Australia. In 1522 members of Magellan’s crew who sailed around the world brought back five bird-of-paradise “trade-skins.” They were a gift for Emperor Charles V, who ruled the Holy Roman Empire, from the Sultan of Bacan. The birds’ plumes were popular with European royalty, and by 1904 hats sporting feathers or entire birds were fashionable in the United States. Stuffed birds under glass domes were even displayed in homes of the wealthy. There are 39 species of birds-of-paradise. Some are endangered and it’s illegal to hunt or export them, but local people are allowed to catch the birds for their plumes, which evidently are used in tribal ceremonies.

For Shaw and most of his teammates, white wasn’t simply a staple of the Spartans’ road jerseys during Saturday’s Class 6A state semifinal at Nazareth Academy.

“We all play hard,” said Shaw, a senior wide receiver from St. Charles. “Chips on the helmet show it.”

St. Francis players clung to their equipment – and each other – after a sea son-ending, 56-28 loss to the Roadrunners.

“It was all family. That’s all it was,” Spartans senior receiver/defensive back Jack Ahern said. “It was just a bunch of guys that loved each other. It brought us a long way and we were hoping it would bring us all the way, but we just came up short.”

Sixth-seeded St. Francis (10-3) lost for the first time since Week 4 as Nazareth put the game away with a fast start that ultimately triggered the running clock in the third quarter.

In their first four drives, the Spartans had a pair of three and outs and threw two interceptions, one of which do-everything Nazareth junior Julian Love returned for a 23-yard touchdown.

Nazareth (13-0), which meets Lemont for the 6A state title next weekend, led, 28-0, after one quarter, capitalizing on its athleticism and fantastic field position.

Love scored a total of four touchdowns, also visiting the end zone on a kickoff return and on two scoring passes from senior quarterback Jonah Beauduy.

“I love him. He’s a great guy,” Beauduy said. “Protects me when I run and he catches it when I throw, so great kid. We’ve got many weapons, though.”

Don’t remind St. Francis. Cognizant of the heavy NCAA Division I interest

in several Roadrunners – whose commits include Dartmouth-bound twin offensive linemen Patrick and John Kilcommons – the Spartans watched a number of Nazareth’s college prospects enjoy big days.

Nazareth’s offensive line is teeming with talent, although St. Francis’ front three, led by senior Quinn Calcagno, still reached the backfield at times.

“It’s really nice when you’ve got three other guys (on the offensive line) going to a Division I program pushing you,” Roadrunners senior left tackle Jack Shutack

said. “Because they’ll get a pancake (block) and it makes you want to get a pancake, and then it just keeps going over and over and over.”

Nazareth swiftly answered both of St. Francis’ second quarter scores, with Love doing the damage each time.

Moments after Spartans senior quarterback Clint Bobowski scored on a 6-yard keeper that brought St. Francis within 28-7 on the extra point, Love raced 96 yards with the ensuing kickoff and scored, widening the gap again with 3:35 remaining before halftime.

One day while I was tending my garden, the woman who lives behind me came over to say hello and admire my vegetables.

Colonoscopy is still the best way to detect colon cancer Dear Doctor K: I heard about a new home test that detects colon cancer. Is it a good alternative to colonoscopy?

Dear Reader: The new test appears to be an advance, but I don’t think it’s as good as colonoscopy.

Particularly for people who are at higher risk for colon cancer, I regard colonoscopy as the best test.

Colon (or colorectal) cancer lies in the wall of the colon. It can cause painless bleeding. The amount of blood can be so small (“occult blood”) that it isn’t visible in the bowel movement, but it can be detected by chemical tests.

Performing these tests for blood in the bowel movement – fecal occult blood tests – has been a traditional way of trying to catch colon cancer early.

However, colonoscopy remains the best way for catching colorectal cancer early. This test, done under sedation, uses an instrument to look inside the colon.

A similar procedure, flexible sigmoidoscopy, looks at about half of the colon and doesn’t require sedation. These tests not only can see cancer, but also abnormalities (adenomas) that can become cancerous in the future. The tests also allow the adenomas and some very early cancers to be removed during the test.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff In August 2014, the FDA approved Cologuard, a new test for colorectal cancer. The Cologuard test is done at home. You collect a stool sample and mail it to a laboratory for analysis. Like the fecal occult test, it checks for blood in stool. But the new test also looks for abnormal DNA. Colon cancers develop because genes in the cells lining the colon have developed mutations. The abnormal DNA caused by these mutations, like occult blood, is shed in the bowel movement.

That abnormal DNA can now be detected by special tests.

One large study of nearly 10,000 people found the new test to be very effective. People in the study were given a fecal occult blood test, the Cologuard test and a colonoscopy. Cologuard detected 92 percent of the cancers that colonoscopy found; the fecal occult test detected 74 percent.

Cologuard also found 69 percent of the polyps that were considered most likely to turn into cancer.

The fecal occult test found 46 percent.

On the down side, the Cologuard test produced more false positives than the fecal occult test.

A false positive test says there is a polyp or cancer when none actually exists – and that requires further investigation with a colonoscopy to confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

The new Cologuard was approved for screening in people ages 50 to 85 who have an average risk of colon cancer.

It is not meant as a substitute for colonoscopy if you have a greater-than-average risk. This includes people with: • A history of polyps or prior colorectal cancer; • A strong family history of colorectal cancer; • Ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

Cologuard offers another option for colorectal cancer screening. But right now, colonoscopy still remains the best screening method. It is recommended once every 10 years for people age 50 and over who have an average risk of colorectal cancer.

Teen tired of helping cheating athlete slide by Dr. Wallace: My ex-boyfriend sits across from me in geometry.

Whenever we have an exam, he tries to look at my paper because he rarely does his homework. He’s a football star and thinks that his athletic ability will carry him through school.

I’m tired of his cheating. I made a mistake and allowed him to look at my answers when we were dating. He still thinks that I’m going to help him slide by, but those days are gone forever and ever.

If his bad behavior continues after your talk, tell the teacher or ask for your seat to be changed.

3. If the clothes you wore today are still clean, hang them in the closet to wear another day. Your washing machine drinks 35 gallons of water every minute!

4. Take a short shower and turn off the water while lathering up. Your shower takes up to 10 gallons of water every minute!

5. For just a few dishes, wash them in the sink and it will take only about four gallons of water. Your dishwasher will use up to 25 gallons of water per load!

In the monthly bidding contest, readers may compare their auctions with those of the experts. There are quizzes, two of which are for players striving to improve their game. And an expert panel answers tough bidding and opening-lead questions.

Here is one of the easier declarer-play problems. South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade queen: three, four ... ? How should South plan the play at rubber bridge (Chicago), when making the contract is what matters most; overtricks are far less important.

In the auction, North’s jump to three no-trump is correct at rubber bridge (and, arguably, at all forms of the game). The game bonus is so huge that it pays to gamble. Yes, if you play transfers into the minors, North might respond two spades, showing long clubs. Here, South would rebid two no-trump to deny good clubs.

Then it would be reasonable for North to sign off in three clubs – and miss a desirable game!

If the club finesse is working, the contract is safe whatever South does at trick one. But if the finesse is losing, declarer must find East with exactly ace-third of spades. And if that is the position, South must not win the first trick.

East will take the next trick with his spade ace and return his last spade. Declarer will win and run the club nine (or jack) to get home.
