Red kettle donations support Salvation Army’s many programs

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – There’s bingo on Tuesday and Thursday, an after-school program every day – as well as Golden Diners lunch for seniors – line dancing on Mondays and Wednesdays and computer training classes.

The Salvation Army TriCity Corps in St. Charles is known for its food pantry, holiday food basket distributions and Christmas bell ringing fundraising efforts.

But many residents might not be aware of the variety of community programs it hosts, said Lt. Betsy Clark, the commanding officer.

“We have a walking group Mondays at 9 a.m.

And Wednesday night at 4:30 p.m. is our community youth

Dunham leads the line dancing class. night,” Clark said. “Those are programs open to the community in partnership with the after-school program. We have dinner at 5:45 p.m. and the kids choir at 6:15 p.m.”

Clark said the programs reflect the church’s mission

to meet all human needs – physical, mental, material and spiritual.

“We want to meet people’s physical needs, and that might be through an exercise class or line dancing or health screenings,” Clark

said. “We help with material needs through the food pantry and emergency financial programs. We recently started hosting a support group for people with disabilities.

The computer classes and educational classes are for people trying to improve their mental wellness.”

This is all part of The Salvation Army’s mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in his name, without discrimination, she said.

“When you see the shield of The Salvation Army, you are experiencing the love of God and getting your needs met, no matter what those needs are. We really take a holistic approach to people’s needs.”

Get to know Elyece Miller Hurley St. Charles resident Elyece Miller Hurley, 53, was working at Royal Real Estate in St. Charles, when she answered 12 questions for the Kane County Chronicle’s Brenda Schory.

Where did you grow up? St. Charles. I was born at old Delnor Hospital, and I graduated from St. Charles East in 1980.

It was on Mother’s Day, and my whole family was there and they watched me do it. I had been taking CPR for 20 years, and it happened right there in front of me. He was an older man, and he kind of slid down under the table.

programs are Bible studies and worship opportunities, all part of meeting spiritual needs, Clark said.

“When people walk in the door, they see the face of Jesus. And that is really what we want people to see,” Clark said. “We want people to know they are loved wherever they come from or whatever their circumstances. We are here to help and share the love of God.” ••• John Arthur Anderson, a Salvation Army board member and member of the Tri-Cities Exchange Club, which supports The Salvation Army, said the exchange club supports the organization’s missions.

“The purpose of the exchange club is to help the community, and The Salvation Army is one of the premier organizations that helps in the Tri-Cities,” said Anderson, who also is supervisor of St. Charles Township. “We have been ringing the bell for The Salvation Army since the 1980s.”

The Salvation Army has a particular interest for Anderson, whose father, Joe K. Anderson, actually brought the

agency to the area.

“The building is named after my dad – the Joe K. Anderson Community Center,” Anderson said. “He brought The Salvation Army here in 1951. … He called Chicago and had them send an officer out here. And my family has been deeply involved with them ever since.”

Anderson counted the many services and programs The Salvation Army offers.

For Clark, many come for one need and usually branch out to receive help for other needs.

“Someone comes in and says they need food,” Clark said. “We work with that family to identify their strengths and help them set goals for their families.”

In particular, The Salvation Army is developing an initiative called Pathway of Hope to address families who are stuck in a cycle of poverty.

“We help them break the cycle by helping them meet these needs,” Clark said.

“They come through our doors in a moment of crisis and do not see their potential. …

Pathway of Hope helps them recognize their strengths in their own life and identify different resources they need in the community that we may not provide here.”

For example, a man came in asking for help paying a utility bill. The caseworker

identified that he needed help managing his money, Clark said.

“He came to our budgeting seminar that we have in partnership with Inland Bank,” Clark said. “He is doing much better in financial management. We connected him with other resources to help him develop skills and strengths and move past this crisis point.”

Another client, a mother, came in for help, and the caseworker learned her 8-monthold son had just died.

“Our caseworker actually

went to her home a week later to just check in with her and make sure she was OK,” Clark said. “She also took a voucher with her to help [the client] with material needs. … I think that speaks to the ministry of The Salvation Army.”

So when people put money in red kettles, Clark said she hopes they realize how many services The Salvation Army provides with those donations.

“Every day, we get to see lives changed,” Clark said.

“And people need to know that is what is going on here.”

Gaffney resigns from fire district

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com S T . C H A R L E S T O W NSHIP – A month ago, the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District Board accepted Jim Gaffney’s resignation as president.

Monday, the trustees reacted to yet another resignation from Gaffney – this time from the board.

Bob Handley, who was named president at the Oct. 26 meeting, told his colleagues that he received Gaffney’s resignation letter that day, although it was dated earlier. The resignation was effective immediately.

The trustees – who met

in a room named after Gaffney at Station No. 3 in St. Charles Township – formally declared a vacancy on the board.

Gaffney was absent.

He was serving a six-year term to expire in 2019. The district’s attorney, Ken Shepro, said the board could appoint someone to the position, and that person would serve until the 2017 election.

The trustees deferred discussion about the procedure to closed session.

Gaffney served as the face of the district as it ended its relationship with the city of St. Charles in 2011 and opened two fire stations despite residents’ protests.

ZBA denies appeal claiming county didn’t follow its own zoning rules

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals Monday voted unanimously to deny an appeal of what county zoning ordinances should apply to a petition seeking a special use to allow an alcohol and drug abuse treatment facility near Campton Hills.

Maxxam Partners LLC sought the special use permit for the former boys school, Glenwood School for Boys, 41W400 Silver Glen Road, Campton Township.

The issue was whether Mark VanKerkhoff, director of the Kane County Development and Community Services Department, was correct in allowing the petition to continue to hearing before the ZBA. Abram and Jolene Andrzejewski of Campton Hills appealed, asserting that VanKerkhoff did not follow the county’s zoning ordinance.

Campton Hills, Campton Township and Plato Township also had passed resolutions stating VanKirkhoff did not follow the county’s zoning ordinance, that he bypassed steps that required him and staff to

approve Maxxam’s petition before it would go to hearing before the ZBA. Now that the ZBA denied the appeal, it will schedule the special use request for a public hearing.

Campton Hills Village President Harry Blecker said officials were disappointed in the vote.

“It is disappointing,” Blecker said. “We don’t think they are following their rules. We’ll see what happens from here.”

Maxxam Partners attorney Keith Brown said a new ZBA hearing date has not yet been set.

“We agree with the decision, which rejected the appeal, and look forward to moving ahead on our hearing for the special use,” Brown said.

Kiva Recovery had previously petitioned for an annexation to Campton Hills for a similar high-end alcohol and substance abuse treatment center at the former boys school.

The Village Board voted against the annexation in 2013.

After Kiva threatened to sue the village, Campton Hills’ insurance carrier settled for $500,000.

When Fox River and Countryside dedicated Station No. 3 last fall, fellow trustees said the training/ community room was named

Gaffney Hall in recognition of his leadership and vision.

His departure marks the second notable resignation at the district. Greg Benson

– who served as the district’s chief since 2011 – retired recently.

Carl DeLeo now serves as fire chief of operations.

Geneva art show features works done only in colored pencil “I wanted a new direction where I could grow a little bit, do something different that I hadn’t done for most of my life. I’ve taken lessons for about two years. She doesn’t let you fail.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The artists’ works were stunning: A great horned owl with glaring yellow eyes, a tiny snail crawling across a deep yellow sunflower petal, newlyweds, children, doorways and pathways, celebrities.

And every piece was done only in colored pencil.

Some 250 to 300 people came to Andria Burchett’s Beech Tree Studio in Geneva on Saturday for the ninth annual “Drawn Together” sale, featuring both her work and that of her students.

Burchett said she works and teaches only in colored pencil, a medium she “fell in love with” while at an art show 20 years ago, when the family lived in Ohio.

“I saw a sign on her booth, and I signed up for classes right then and there,” Burchett said. “I took a few class sessions from this teacher, and then we moved to Geneva.”

She said she knew enough that she was hooked, then studied and practiced to become proficient.

“I don’t know how to paint,” Burchett said. “I don’t have an art background. I don’t know

And I learn a lot from what my students do, too. This is such a slow, slow process that you don’t crank these out. You’re not going to create more than two or three a year.”

The colored pencils used in this art form are wax-based with high-pigment content, used with a layering technique, she said.

“You see all different components within a color,” Burchett said. “For instance, if you are making a brown, you wouldn’t pull out a brown pencil. You would pull out purples and reds and greens and yellows, and you make that brown. It’s a much richer, much more vibrant and interesting color than just a brown pencil.”

Among Burchett’s students was Larry Maholland of St. Charles, a former St. Charles city administrator who retired

in 2005. Maholland’s picture featured loons in water, drawn from combining two photos his wife, Sharen, took in northern Wisconsin.

“I wanted a new direction where I could grow a little bit, do something different that I hadn’t done for most of my life,” Maholland said. “I’ve taken lessons for about two years. She doesn’t let you fail.”

Sarai Hernandez, 18, a senior at Batavia High School who plans on studying art in college, said she also uses colored pencils as her medium of choice.

ideas and have like a different perspective on different techniques you can use with colored pencils,” Sarai Hernandez said. “It’s more complex, but I’m interested to see different ways to utilize those colored pencils.”

Her sister, Rhina Hernandez, 29, also of Batavia, said she draws with regular black pencil as a hobby.

Geneva resident Joan Rieck said she started taking classes from Burchett in September.

“I have pieces in the show, and I wanted to see what other people did who aren’t in my class,” Rieck said, as she looked through a stack of prints.

Robert E. Spellmeyer, age 80, of Hampshire, passed away at home, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family, Friday, November 20, 2015.

He was born October 22, 1935, in Elgin, the son of Harold and Virginia (Knox) Spellmeyer Bob grew up in Elgin and attended local schools.

Following graduation from Elgin High School, Bob attended Northern Illinois University. He heard the call of his country and was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

Bob was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marjorie Faber, on May 25, 1963, at St. Gall Catholic Church in Elburn, IL. He was a founding partner of Borhart, Spellmeyer & Company Accounting Firm in Elgin, IL. Bob was a practicing CPA for 53 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marjorie (Faber) Spellmeyer; two children, Grant (Sarah Brennan) Spellmeyer and Neal (Grace Carpenter) Spellmeyer; five grandchildren, Brennan, Gavin, Quinlyn, Avery and Lucy Spellmeyer; and two sisters, Audrey (Edward) Harman and Barbara Peters; two brothers-in-law, Raymond (Lola) Faber and Glenn (Jane) Faber; and a

sister-in-law, Helen Faber.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Joseph Peters and Fred Faber.

Jeane D. Hagerty, age 88, of St. Charles, IL, formerly of La Fox, passed away quietly into the arms of her Savior at home surrounded by the love and prayers of her family, Saturday, November 21, 2015.

Jeane was a loving wife, wonderful mother and doting grandmother who will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Jim Hagerty; two children, Paul Hagerty and Ann (Troy) Tousana; six grandchildren, Doug (Nicole) Hagerty, Derek (Amanda) Hagerty, Troy Jr., Amber, Trevor and Trent Tousana; Five great-grandchildren, Cody Millhouse, Faith and Levi Hagerty and Chase and Morgan Hagerty; and a close family of friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Mildred Swinehamer.

The selection process for GRAMMY Signature Schools begins each year in August when the GRAMMY Foundation mails notifications to more than 20,000 public high schools requesting information about each school’s music program, the release states.

After applications are scored, finalists are identified and asked to submit additional documentation, such as recordings of school concerts, sample concert programs and repertoire, according to the release.

The submitted materials then are reviewed by an independent committee of top music educators and professionals to determine the schools that merit GRAMMY Signature School status, the release states.

The closest Illinois schools also named semifinalists were Metea Valley and Waubonsie Valley high schools in Aurora.

BATAVIA – A Batavia school once again joined an elite list of schools recognized by the GRAMMY Foundation.

Batavia High School was one of 12 Illinois schools and 119 schools nationwide selected as a 2016 GRAMMY Signature Schools semifinalist, according to a Batavia Public School District 101 news release.

The GRAMMY Signature Schools program recognizes top U.S. public high schools making an outstanding commitment to music education during an academic school year, the release states.

This is the third straight year for the Batavia High School music program to be named a semifinalist in the Grammy program.

“It is such an honor for Batavia High School to be selected as a Grammy Signature Schools semifinalist for the third year in a row,” Batavia High School Band Director Chris Owen stated in the release. “Our music students continue to raise the bar of musical performance and work ethic year over year, and it really shows.”

Incumbents, challengers begin filing for 2016 primary

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Several incumbents and repeat challengers on Monday filed to run for various public offices in the March 15 general primary election, according to paperwork filed in various locations.

As previously announced, the Kane County coroner race will be a near-rematch of the 2012 election season. Incumbent Rob Russell is running against previous Republican challenger Bob Tiballi, and Tao Martinez currently is running unopposed as a Democratic candidate, according to paperwork posted on the Kane County Elections website.

Tiballi and Martinez both

lost to Russell, who was elected in 2012.

In other countywide races, incumbent Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt will run against Republican candidate Craig P. Lee. Other Kane County incumbents – including Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell, Recorder Sandy Wegman and State’s Attorney Joe McMahon – currently are running unopposed in the Republican primary.

Incumbent Kane County Board District 10 member Susan Starrett, R-North Aurora, will face Doug Sullivan, the current Batavia Public Library board president.

According to the National Weather Service, the snowstorm that took place over the weekend was notable for several reasons.

The official snowfall total for Chicago was 11.2 inches, which ranks it second among the top November snowstorms in Chicago since 1884. As far as the snowfall totals for the first event of a season, the 11.2-inch figure ranks first, well ahead of the second-place total.

Locally, unofficial figures were released Sunday, made by local observers. There were two totals listed for St. Charles, 13.3 inches and 9.0 inches. The 13.3-inch figure is much higher than other local totals. Elgin recorded 12.0 inches. In the Tri-Cities, Geneva was listed at 7.2 inches and Batavia at 6.9 inches. North Aurora recorded 6.7 inches, and Aurora had 5.3 inches, according to the unofficial totals.

No, it’s not a turkey. This tureen is in the form of a guinea fowl. It sometimes is eaten in the United States, but it usually weighs less than four pounds and is much too small to feed the crowd at Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey for Thanksgiving is an American idea, promoted in the 1860s when Thanksgiving was declared a holiday by President Lincoln.

There are many legends that say wild turkey was part of the menu for the feast at Plymouth Colony in 1621.

But written reports say the Wampanoag Indians brought five deer (venison) and the colonists brought wild birds (probably tasty ducks or other water fowl, not tough turkeys) or passenger pigeons, shellfish and vegetables including dried corn and squash. Turkey wasn’t a popular part of the colonists’ diet until about 1800. The feast was probably a political meeting between neighbors with about 90 male Indians and 50 male Pilgrims, and no women. They probably did all the cooking. Enjoy your modern Thanksgiving dinner, and admire the beautiful African guinea hen tureen made in France. It sold for $5,412 at a New Orleans auction.

There are places in the U.S. where guinea hen are raised and restaurants that serve the small, expensive birds. *** Q: I recently inherited a singledoor oak china cabinet in the Mission style. It has side shelves supported by corbels on each side, arched top,

and three interior oak shelves and is 58 inches high, 44 1/2 inches wide, and 16 1/2 inches deep. It’s marked “Limbert” on the back and “452.”

A: Your china cabinet was made by the Charles P. Limbert Company.

Charles Limbert (1854-1923) was a furniture salesman before he started his own company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1894. The company moved to Holland, Michigan, in 1906. It closed in 1944. Mission furniture was popular from the early 1900s to about 1920. The number “452” is the model number. Your china cabinet probably was made about 1910. Depending on condition, it would have been appraised at about $8,000 five years ago but today it’s down to about $5,000. ** * Q: My husband bought a very old steam iron at an estate auction many years ago. It has steam holes along the bottom and a water ball sits in the back with knobs for turning it off and on. “Coleman, made in U.S.” is written on the ball. Is it worth anything?

A: William Coffin Coleman started out selling typewriters and later sold lamps. By 1902 he had established a business in Wichita, Kansas, where he manufactured lamps. By the 1920s, Coleman was making irons, coffee percolators, toasters and waffle irons. The company made more than 30 different models of irons. Before electric irons were made, irons were powered by alcohol, gasoline, kerosene, natural gas and other fuels. The Coleman iron found most often today is the blue Model 4A, a gasoline-powered iron

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Nearly three dozen businesses in St. Charles last week passed a round of checks ensuring they follow the rules regarding tobacco sales, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

Conducted on Thursday, the inspection was the first of three scheduled for the 2015-16 tobacco grant period, a program provided by the state, the release states.

It indicated the St. Charles Police Department has par-

ticipated in the tobacco education and grant program since its inception in 2006.

Two 17-year-olds helped the police department with the compliance checks, according to the release. Thirty-four businesses were scheduled for inspection, but one business had closed and no longer sells tobacco products, the release states.

According to the release, all 33 businesses checked were in compliance and will receive a congratulatory letter from Mayor Ray Rogina, who acts as the city’s liquor commissioner.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is making traffic safety a priority this week.

Officers will be out in force through Sunday conducting enforcement on impaired drivers and seat belt violators in conjunction with the “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” traffic safety campaigns, the department announced Monday in a news release.

“Whether you’re going across town or across the state this Thanksgiving, please make sure everyone in the car is wearing their seat belt,” the release states. “By law in

Illinois, everyone must wear a seat belt no matter what seating position. St. Charles officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing a seat belt and arrest those choosing to drive impaired.”

According to the release, more than 300 people were killed in crashes on Thanksgiving weekend in 2013. The release states St. Charles police also will participate in the Kane County State’s Attorney’s no-refusal operation set for Wednesday night. It will last into the early morning hours of Thanksgiving.

No-refusal operations are designed to expedite the booking process for those charged with driving under the influence. Police work with an

Believe me, I understand the times when it is easier to bundle a bunch of errands into one stop. It happens to all of us (especially when your youngest skipped their nap).

The object of this column is just to ask you to consider shopping local first. That will make a huge impact on our community.

There is a national campaign sponsored by American Express that encourages people to shop local on Small Business Saturday – Nov. 28.

That is a great start, and I hope that you make a special effort to kick-start your hol-

iday shopping at local businesses. I ask that you stretch that out all year and “think small first.”

Bernie Sanders’ ‘democratic socialism’ misses the point

By STEPHEN STROMBERG The Washington Post “Let me take this opportunity to define for you, simply and straightforwardly, what democratic socialism means to me,” Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, said Thursday.

“It means building on what Franklin Delano Roosevelt said when he fought for guaranteed economic rights for all Americans. And it builds on what Martin Luther King Jr. said in 1968 when he stated, and I quote, ‘This country has socialism for the rich and rugged individualism for the poor.’ ” Democratic socialism, Sanders argued, is about guaranteeing Americans their “economic rights – R-I-G-H-T-S.” The goal is to provide “economic security,” ensuring that working families, the elderly, children, the sick and the poor can meet their basic needs.

But if that’s the goal, you don’t need Bernie Sanders.

Sanders doesn’t want to reverse the situation King described, in which government sustains a system that helps the rich and demands that the poor make do on their own. Rather, he would create a system in which new, comprehensive government benefits would flow to all – including the rich.

Everyone would get free college education. Everyone would have Medicare-style health coverage. Everyone would get a maternity and sick-leave benefit, paid for by taxpayers. Instead of phasing out benefits with income, he would in some cases increase them for those who make more. The result is a system designed not merely to ensure that people have a basic standard

of living, which you could do in all sorts of much less expensive and intrusive ways, but also to create a society in which everyone gets a lot of government aid.

To some, that’s a feature, not a bug. Universal government programs, the thinking goes, make for better policy because they are more politically resilient than those targeted at the needy. Congress can cut food stamps. It can’t touch Social Security. Moreover, if college education should be a right, as Sanders insists, doesn’t it follow that the government should make it universally free?

No. Ensuring that everyone can achieve a rudimentary standard of living does not require the government to subsidize that of the wealthy, whose economic security is generally not at risk. There are political and practical constraints on taking loads more money out of the private economy.

The country’s leaders need to be talking about how to muster scarce government resources to invest in public infrastructure, to provide a social safety net that protects those who fall and to educate Americans so they have a chance in a hyper-competitive global economy. This will require designing creative, lean policies that maximize the good the government can do with the money it raises.

Sanders wants to have a different conversation – and it’s not the one the country needs.

Hondlik propels Saints down stretch

By STEVE BOURBON editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – As the St. Charles East boys basketball team watched its lead dwindle in the second half, senior forward Zach Hondlik took over the game at both ends of the court to secure a season-opening victory.

The Saints jumped ahead early against East Aurora and held on for a 61-53 win on the opening night of the 57th annual Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament on Monday behind 15 points from Hondlik.

With the Tomcats creeping closer in the fourth, the Hondlik took a charge with the Saints protecting a 47-41 lead with 6:07 left, then scored 10 straight for East to push the lead to 55-43.

“I didn’t really feel in the moment like, ‘Wow, I just scored 10 straight, ’ ” Hondlik

said. “I guess I just got rolling a little bit there. Finishing at the free throw line and finishing some layups.”

Justin Hardy also had 15 points and Evan DiLeonardi chipped in 13. East Aurora was led by 14 points on four 3-pointers from Traevon Brown.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well, to be honest. Normally that’s our specialty,” St. Charles East coach Pat Woods said. “I’m happy to put up 61 points on an off night. I think that number is going to grow a lot.”

The Saints opened on a 12-2 run and ended the first quarter with a 16-6 lead. After the Tomcats cut the lead to 17-12 in the opening minute of the second quarter, the Saints increased their lead thanks to a 10-2 spurt that pushed the lead back in double digits.

East’s offense was aided by its ballhandlers breaking

down the defense and kicking out to shooters in the halfcourt setting, or by leaking out ahead of the Tomcats for layups in transition.

The Tomcats cut into the deficit after halftime with a strong third quarter. East Aurora flashed some 2-3 zone defense at times to get the Saints off-balance, and Brown banked a 3-pointer off the dribble as

the buzzer sounded to trim the lead to 45-36. Brown was at it again to start the fourth quarter with another trey – his third of the game – to bring East Aurora within 45-39.

“It was a battle last year, and I expected the same this year,” Woods said. “They played very hard and they’re going to be very good. I’m glad we’re playing them early in

the season and not late in the season.”

But Hondlik took the crucial charge rotating under the basket to force a turnover and later forced a steal and saved the ball from going out of bounds on a fast break.

“Before games, in practices, charges are our huge thing. We spend hours taking charges so when we get one in the game, it gets everyone pumped up,” Hondlik said. “It makes it fun in the game.”

Fittingly, even with the game essentially in hand, Hondlik secured an offensive rebound with under 20 seconds left to allow the Saints to dribble out the clock.

“I thought he gave us good energy at both ends of the floor,” Woods said. “A senior stepping to the forefront, that was good to see.”

Expect East to reload and continue to knock down the long-range shot after connecting 276 times from 3-point range last season at an almost 40 percent success rate. Zach Robinson and DiLeonardi are two of many capable players for knocking down the deep ball. ... Newcomer Zach Mitchell, a junior who quarterbacked East’s football team, is expected to play an important role after leading the sophomore team in scoring last season.

Hot handles: Woods said McQuillan has “great floor vision” and a “nice, smooth flow to his game” and will have the ball in his hands a lot this season.

Bottom line: It’s never easy to repeat as conference champions, especially in what is expected to be a tight race in the UEC River this season, but Woods and the Saints will rely on strong play from McQuillan and DiLeonardi to be successful this year.

Masoncup on the development of junior guard Sammie Sample, who looks to play her biggest role yet since coming up as a freshman: “She has very quick feet, which I’m sure comes from playing soccer. ... She’s been a nice surprise, and I knew she had it in her. That’s why we moved her up as a freshman.” … “Not that our schedule wasn’t already tough,” Masoncup said, but the team added a handful of new nonconference dates via shootouts, including taking part in a new event organized by Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe.

Hot handle: Masoncup raves about Helsel. “There’s not much she can’t do,” he said. “When she’s on the court, her passing ability and ability to see the court is one of the best I’ve coached, boys or girls.”

Bottom line: With talent returning in the frontcourt and backcourt and plenty of other athletic players eager to contribute off the bench, North likes its chances to contend for conference and postseason hardware.

Scouting the North Stars: Poulin feels as if his team is in a good position heading into this season, although still feels there is plenty of work to be done. ... Also losing key contributors from last year’s team, Poulin expects junior guard Anthony Delisi to step in and make an impact after a strong year as the sophomore scoring leader. ... Armon Osbourne also will be a player to watch, along with Jarod Karom, who Poulin said has “stepped in and taken on an important leadership role, really directing the offense.” ... Poulin has a “hungry, very competitive group that wants to prove the public’s perception of North not having a good shot this season wrong.” ... It will start on the defensive end for North, as Poulin hopes that havoc can translate into some easy baskets in transition.

Hot handles: Although Poulin believes he has a number of players who can handle the ball, Karom will be the North Stars’ primary point guard this season.

Bottom line: It will be a work in progress for North to get to where it wants to be, but Poulin is more than confident that he has the group to get there. Expect North to be one of the stronger teams in the UEC River this season.

Returning starters: Ryan David, sr., G/F; Jacob Gomes, sr., C; Mark Lilly, sr., G Scouting the Knights: Probably the most experienced group of any Kane County Chronicle-area team, the Knights boast eight seniors, most of whom have varsity experience. ... The Knights will look to David, a standout, all-conference guard/forward, to lead by example on the court. ... Conroy, who takes over for Brian Johnson, who took the job at alma mater West Aurora, has two sons on the team. Ethan Conroy, a transfer from DeKalb with varsity experience, will help control the ballhandling duties with Lilly. Conroy’s other son, Mason, also is expected to play an important role, along with Mitchell Groen. ... “Guys had (a) deer in headlights look the first few days with (our) new system, but now they are asking questions, which is what I like,” Conroy said. “The guys want to learn and understand and we’re very excited about getting things going. There’s not one particular thing I’m looking forward to besides just getting out there and showing people what we are capable of.”

Hot handles: Lilly and Ethan Conroy are two players that Joe Conroy feels confident with the ball in their hands at any time.

Bottom line: The Knights will look to their leadership to be successful in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East and what they hope is a deep run in the Class 3A postseason.

Last year’s record: 18-10 overall, 6-7 Northern Illinois Big 12 East. Lost, 44-38, to Burlington Central in a Class 3A Sycamore Regional semifinal.

Returning starters: Camri Conley, sr., G; Bailey Crimmins, sr., C; Vanessa Gould, sr., F; Morgan Weber, jr., G Scouting the Knights: “We’re going to be competitive. We’re going to be tough to beat,” Colombe said.

“We’re going to have to play well to beat teams, and teams are going to have to play well to beat us. I mean, our conference is pretty tough. We think we can compete with anybody in our conference.” ... Speedy sophomore guard Jamie Martens, also a budding track athlete, impressed during preseason practices. ... All 14 Knights played in Saturday’s season-opening victory, and Colombe said Kaneland expects to routinely get contributions from 10 players each game. “We don’t feel like there is a drop-off,” Colombe said. “We feel like our kids mesh pretty well.

Kids coming off the bench, they understand their roles. They’re not trying to do too much.” ... Colombe organized Kaneland’s inaugural shootout on the heels of the recent success of former boys counterpart Brian Johnson’s event. “Made contacts with some coaches that I knew, some coaches that we’ve played against,” Colombe said.

The shootout is set for Feb. 6, and the Knights’ meeting with West Aurora closes a four-game homestand.

Hot handle: Colombe called Conley “our floor leader, for sure,” but also said Morgan Weber and Jenni Weber will share ballhandling duties.

Bottom line: Kaneland pushed Central in a memorable postseason meeting that showed many good things about its style. Now the Knights aim to augment their offense behind what has been a vaunted ‘D.’

“This conference has really developed itself into one of the better conferences in the state of Illinois. I truly believe that,” Poulin said. “It’s going to be no different this year. It’s a very tall task to come away with this conference title, but in order to do that, I think it’s extremely important to win the games you play on your home court because no matter who you play, road games in this conference are very difficult.”

In a race that seems open to a number of teams, winning games at home takes on that much more an important role, although many RIver teams already shed light on how crucial it is to defend the home court.

Woods and East lost one game at home last season, which happened to be to a St Joseph team that won the Class 3A state championship, while Ralston said that his thought since taking over as Vikings’ head coach for the 2008-09 season is to never let a team come into his high school and feel comfortable.

“We pride ourselves on protecting our home court, and I really feel that in order to be a successful program, that is at the top of the list,” Ralston said. “You can’t ever let someone come in and feel at ease on

the road in this conference, let alone any game. There are elements that could make this conference race very interesting, so you absolutely must bring your “A-game” every single night if you want to be up there at season’s end.”

Ralston said he doesn’t consider anyone to be a favorite, despite some teams returning a bit more experience than others with Monday marking the season openers for many Chronicle-area teams.

Batavia returns football standout Canaan Coffey, as well as point guard Kamontez Thomas, who both expect a much stronger showing after a 5-9 UEC River record last season.

Both Geneva and East finished as co-champions at 12-2 last season, with the North Stars, who return guard Michael Schroeder and forward Griffin Hammer, one game back at 11-3. Larkin was fourth, just behind North.

With that said, it would be hard to imagine a tighter race this year, but anything seems possible, as coaches tell it.

Zero players on the Chronicle’s 2014-15 all-area first team are suiting up this season, so there’s at least one certainty: a new group of standouts has the ability to make an impact.

Teams’ home records figure to be significant factors during the race for the UEC River title. Let the battle begin.

Coffey commits to Ind. Weslyan: At Batavia, despite having

a record-setting senior football season, Canaan Coffey decided to follow his heart and play basketball at the next level.

On Sunday, Coffey verbally committed to Indiana Wesleyan, an NCAA Division II school that captured the NAIA national championship in 2014.

Coffey, who set a Batavia school record with his 82 receptions and hauled in 11 touchdowns this football season, felt that basketball gave him a slight edge to play in college.

“It was definitely a tough decision. ... I juggled that for a while, but just decided that basketball was something I really wanted to pursue playing,” Coffey said. “Looking back through all my visits, Indiana Wesleyan just made me feel so comfortable. The guys welcomed me, and the way the coaches interacted with the players, and how they players interacted with each other, really made me feel like it was somewhere that I wanted to spend the next four years of my life.”

Coffey also had basketball offers from Trinity International University and Taylor (Indiana) University.

The Bulldogs basketball team opened its season against Wheaton Warrenville South on Monday as part of the Batavia Windmill City Classic. Results were not available as of press time.

After finishing as runner-up in last year’s state meet, Schalz and the Beads made sure to make it known that Rosary was back on top.

Rosary (192 points) returned to the state’s elite, winning Saturday’s state meet over its next closest competitors in Lake Forest (154) and St. Charles North (122.5).

“It means so much for it to end this way,” Rosary senior Katie Rentz said. “To go from finishing in 30-something place as a freshman, to ninth, to runner-up last year and now to be in this spot, it’s been amazing to see that unfold in my four years. “ “It’s so much more special after the way things ended last year,” said Rosary junior Alexis Yager of Batavia, who finished as a state champion in the 200-yard individual medley. “We did this as a team. CAROL STREAM – The Fox Valley Hawks are having a good time playing hockey these days. And their opponents are paying the price for it.

After a 5-3 win by the Hawks Saturday night at the Fox Valley Ice Arena over the combined team of Addison Trail/Willowbrook/Fenton (AWF) in a game where the Hawks trailed on three different occasions, the club came back Sunday afternoon at the Carol Stream Ice Arena to face the Spartans of the combined team of Lockport/Lemont.

The Hawks made the Spartans look like a junior varsity team en-route to a 9-2 win.

Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen gave the start Sunday afternoon to back-up goaltender William Lesswing. Lesswing, who knew of his Sunday start late Saturday night, was infrequently tested and stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced.

“I think we are just playing really good and hard right now as a team,” Lesswing said. “We are working really well together as a team right now. I was seeing the puck well today. It was hard today not getting a lot of action because you have to stay mentally focused in the game. These games are harder, I think, than seeing shots every two minutes and constant action.”

The Hawks (11-2) opened the scoring at the 15:40 mark of the first period when Josh Gadow scored off a feed from Trevor Kurtzhals. Just less than two minutes later, it became 2-0 when Tyler Campise scored off an assist from Morgan York.

With 7:31 left in the first period, Kurtzhals scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-0.

York scored with 3:12 remaining in the period to punctuate the scoring and provide the Hawks with a 4-0 lead.

“We have been playing great as a team so far this season,” forward Chris Monroe said. “We have a lot to be proud of with our record. I feel like from day one to now my game has really improved with the coaching I have gotten and who I have gotten to play with.”

Larynx changes during puberty can cause boy’s voice to crack Dear Dr. K: My son is 14, and his voice has started to change. Why does this happen?

Dear Reader: Your son is going through puberty.

A change in his voice is just one of several changes in this phase of life.

The first thing that generally happens to a boy during puberty is that his testicles begin to get larger and to make testosterone.

Then, the penis begins to grow and sexual hair begins to appear.

He will become more muscular. He will have more frequent erections, become capable of making sperm and thus become fertile.

Boys undergo a growth spurt during puberty.

The bones get longer and then wider. Along with the growth of muscles and bones, there is an even greater growth in the amount of body fat. As a result, body fat becomes a greater fraction of total body weight during puberty.

There also are changes in the heart and blood vessels. Boys develop a greater aerobic capacity, and blood pressure rises slightly.

The reason much of this happens is, in part, rising levels of testosterone.

In particular, the increase in this hormone causes changes in the larynx, or voice box.

That’s what is causing the change in his voice.

The larynx is located in the throat at the top of the trachea, or windpipe.

The larynx contains the vocal cords, two tiny muscles.

These two muscles tighten and relax to change how air passes through the larynx.

When you raise or lower the pitch of your voice, it is the tightness of the vocal cords that causes the pitch to change. So, changes in the larynx or vocal cords affect your voice.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff During puberty, testosterone causes a boy’s larynx to get bigger. The vocal cords also lengthen and thicken in response to testosterone.

Just as the shortest strings on a harp or piano make the highest sounds, the short vocal cords of children produce voices that are high in pitch. The longer cords of adult males produce lower-pitched voices.

As the larynx and vocal cords are going through this growth phase, the changes can cause the voice to “crack.” The change of voice can happen quickly; over only a few weeks or months, the voice begins to crack and then becomes deeper and more resonant.

As girls go through puberty, their vocal cords also lengthen. But the growth is more modest, so their voice changes are not as noticeable.

If a boy does not go through puberty because of a deficiency of testosterone, his voice will remain high.

In fact, in 16th-, 17thand 18th-century Italy, young boys with a talent for singing operatic or religious music were sometimes castrated.

The resulting failure of testosterone levels to rise preserved the high pitch of the boys’ voices into adulthood.

There’s nothing a boy can do to prevent his voice from cracking as he goes through puberty.

If it is making your son uncomfortable, remind him that this happens to all teenage boys and will pass soon enough.

I’ll smoke pot until the day I die Dr. Wallace: I’ve been reading your column for several years, and I know you always encourage teens not to smoke marijuana and try to scare them into stopping their “dangerous” habits. I’ve been a pothead for the last five years, and I have enjoyed every single joint I’ve smoked and nothing has happened to me. I get an unbelievable high and it gives me true peace to smoke it. I have no plans to quit, so I’ll be smoking pot until the day I die.

It’s really ridiculous that vodka, gin and whiskey are all legal in all states in the U.S. However, smoking marijuana is illegal in most states, and if caught smoking it in my state, the user is labeled a criminal and might even serve jail time.

I can’t understand why so many people in the U.S. consider marijuana so harmful to the human body. Can you explain what medical and emotional dangers exist for the human body if a person smokes a joint?

I am a college grad and I have an excellent job in a large Utah city, but I have to keep my use of marijuana a secret or risk losing my job. Dr. Wallace: Our family moved to Bullhead City from Phoenix four months ago, and this move has caused a lot of problems for me. I’m 16 and in the 11th grade, but in this small town all the “popular” kids have grown up with each other and have been friends since kindergarten. It’s like they have their own “club” and no new members are allowed. They are very unfriendly to newcomers.

There are other kids, but

some of them are real “losers” and some have shady reputations. My parents are savvy and are aware of the situation and are upset if I hang out with some of them.

I don’t smoke, drink or do drugs, but I don’t see what’s wrong with overlooking these bad habits in some of the kids I hang around with. I don’t want to be the only guy in the 11th grade who has no friends.

What can I do to get my parents to understand that I would never indulge in their habits, and that going to a football game with them isn’t going to cause me to join them. My parents just don’t understand. –

There are probably many students who are not in the “snob clique” and don’t get involved with alcohol, tobacco or drugs. You just may not have met them yet. I suggest you seek out and join a few clubs and start taking part in after-school activities that interest you. This is an excellent way to meet new people and make friends.

Meanwhile, your parents are right. You’re inviting trouble into your life if you keep hanging around with kids who do drugs and drink alcohol.

South barrels into six hearts, and West leads a trump. What should declarer do?

When South responds one heart, North re-evaluates his hand, adding two points for his singleton. This makes his hand worth a game-invitation. South would then head for a slam. (Anyone who uses the Losing Trick Count will note that the North hand has only five losers: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and one club.

That makes it worth a game-force. If North did evaluate that way, he should rebid four clubs, a splinter bid showing four-card heart support, a singleton or void in clubs, and at least game-going values.)

A trump lead usually means there will be a 3-2 split. Assuming so, South starts with three spades, four hearts, one diamond, two clubs, and a club ruff in the dummy.

He needs one more trick, which might come from a 3-3 spade split or a second diamond trick.

Since playing diamonds requires guesswork (or, as here, is fatal), declarer should try spades first. So, he draws trumps and cashes the three top spades.

I managed to stay clean for almost two years. During that time I enrolled in college, got engaged, regained the respect of my family and started to have a normal life. Things were going very well for me, and then I relapsed. I threw everything away.
