Chronicle launches redesigned site The Kane County Chronicle launched a redesigned website last week.

Featuring “responsive” design, the new website was created to provide readers with an improved user experience on their desktop, smartphone or tablet.

Now, those who visit www. kcchronicle.com on any device will notice that the display on their screen adjusts appropriately to the device they are using.

The website still places a priority on local news, photography and videography.

And registered users of the site still sign in online by clicking on the link in the upper righthand corner of the site’s home page.

In addition to emphasizing

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey photography, the new site has story pages that include more opportunities for readers to access our top news stories without having to hit the back button.

Lastly – and possibly most importantly for our regular story commenters – is a change in the site’s commenting system.

Readers must register and create a profile with www.livefyre.com to be able to comment on stories, opinion pieces and other items on www.kcchronicle. com. Livefyre does offer the

opportunity to register and create a profile with an existing social media account, such as Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. This registration is different than any registration readers might already have done through www.kcchronicle.com.

Features in the new commenting system allow story-commenters to respond directly to a comment in a thread and allow for better self-policing of the comments section.

Users can flag comments as offensive, off-topic or as spam. If a comment is flagged enough times, it becomes hidden to users and subject to review. Commenters also can “like” a comment similar to

“liking” a post on Facebook.

The Kane County Chronicle’s rules for posting have not changed. Repeat offenders are subject to expulsion.

However, comments are no longer restricted to 48 hours after a story publishes.

Readers don’t have to register to view comments.

Inaugural Student Artist Event kicks off Feb. 14 ST. CHARLES – The inaugural Charlie’s Center for the Arts – Student Artist Event will run from Feb. 14 through Feb. 16.

It will encompass multiple venues throughout St. Charles that will feature the visual and performing art of student artists – kindergarten through college.

Students are invited to participate in the event audition and submit visual artwork for jurying.

Performing artists will receive a stipend for their performance, and visual artists’

work will be for sale, if they choose.

Auditions for performing artists will be from noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 18 at Fox Valley Rep/ Pheasant Run Resort in the Utrillo Room in Gallery Hall (the freestanding building next to the tennis courts).

Collection in Batavia to benefit tornado victims BATAVIA – Fox Valley Robotics/Batavia Robotics will be sponsoring a collection

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Sunday at Rotolo Middle School, 1501 S. Raddant Road, Batavia, to benefit the victims of the tornadoes and storms that recently swept through the state.

Two divisions of the group consisting of first- through eighth-graders are studying natural disasters as part of a robotics challenge.

When they heard about the destruction and the needs of the people, group members wanted to do more than just study it and watch it on news.

The entire organization of first- through 12th-graders and their parents will be spreading the word and helping in the collection this weekend.

Geneva announces holiday hours GENEVA – The city of Geneva has announced its holiday hours.

City Hall and all city buildings, with the exception of the police and fire departments, will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The same city buildings will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 for Christmas, as well as Jan. 1 in honor of New Year’s Day.

A FAMILY OF TEACHERS Morgans working together on Mooseheart’s campus

OOSEHEART – It seems fitting that the Morgans all work at Mooseheart Child City and School under the title of family teachers.

For nine years, Colleen and Mark Morgan have been in that role, which requires them to live in a home on campus and care for 10 children. Three years ago, their son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Kayla Morgan, both started working as family teachers on the same campus.

Mark and Colleen Morgan said they started their careers at Mooseheart after the youngest of their three children graduated from high school. Phillip and Kayla Morgan, on the other hand, are raising their growing family on campus, with their daughter, Charli, 3, and a baby is due next month.

Despite following in his parents’ footsteps, Phillip Morgan said it was his growing family that inspired him to pursue his career path.

“It had more to do with coming to the realization of the importance of family,” he said. “We were wanting to spend time with our only daughter. Not only was it an opportunity to raise her among many other youth, but to move closer to family.” “[Charli is] with us 24/7, except when she goes to preschool off campus,” Kayla Phillips said.

Mark and Colleen Morgan live five houses down from their son and daughter-inlaw, working in a boys’ home.

“You’d be surprised how little we see each other,” Colleen Morgan said. “We try to get together once a week.”

Mark and Colleen Morgan said they didn’t have a background in teaching. They spent years helping to run a Christian camp that served more than 10,000 children a year. They said Mooseheart’s

extensive training program paired with the school’s model of care drew them to the occupation they’ve held for nearly a decade.

“Everyone that comes here has a different reason for them coming that’s very

different from a mainstream childhood,” Colleen said.

Phillip Morgan said as family teachers, their primary responsibility is to teach social, academic and independent living skills to the students under their charge.

Kayla Morgan said the schedule in every home is structured differently.

In the Indiana Home, where she and Phillip Morgan are helping raise 10 middle and high school girls, everyone gets up around 6 a.m.

for school. They try to all eat breakfast together.

“You’re providing a family atmosphere that’s caring and nurturing for young ladies who might not come from that,” Kayla Morgan said.

After school, Phillip and Kayla spend a little time with each of the girls, talking about their school day, discussing areas where they may have improved and areas they may need to work on. Then they have a snack, followed by study time and dinner as a group.

Their home looks just like any other home – photos of the girls adorn the walls, a sectional couch surrounds a flat-screen TV in the living room and a chore chart hangs next to the dining room table.

Mark Morgan said each student has a care plan that family teachers help them work through.

The care plan is constructed for each individual student’s needs to help them learn skills such as helping others, staying on task at school or learning to deal with frustration.

“Each student is learning from the way you respond to them,” Mark Morgan said. “It makes you a better person.”

Siannie Segbee, 12, is a student under Phillip and Kayla Morgan’s care at the Indiana Home. She said her family teachers are there to help her, and they often go places and do activities together.

“If I had to describe them, I would say they’re nice people,” she said. “They care for me and they try to make sure all my needs are met.”

STC wants vehicles, rubbish moved from McIlvaine’s property

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – City officials are asking permission to remove vehicles, construction materials and rubbish from the outside of Clifford McIlvaine’s house, and move it to a storage facility at his expense.

Officials made the request in a recent court filing. Kane County Judge Clifford D a v i d A k e - McIlvaine mann is set to hear the request Dec. 19.

Akemann previously allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with the repairing of McIlvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St., including correcting an unfinished roof.

The city sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to finish a home repair project that was started more than 30 years ago.

McIlvaine said he objected to the city’s latest request.

“I don’t think it’s right, and I’m going to fight it,” he said Friday.

City officials had asked McIlvaine to remove several items from his property by Oct. 8, including all garbage and debris, all construction materials and all vehicles not parked on an impervious surface.

“Defendant McIlvaine’s course of contemptuous conduct during the past year makes clear that he has no intention to comply with the consent decree and that both fines and incarcerations will not secure his compliance,” St. Charles city attorney Robert Funk wrote in a recent court filing.

McIlvaine briefly was jailed in September 2012 when the longtime St. Charles resident refused to comply with city’s plumbing code as part of the home improvement project.

Earlier this year, McIlvaine blamed city officials after water leaked into his house after a heavy downpour in a July storm.

He was born May 22, 1916, in Wayne.

He graduated from Elgin Academy and then from USC with a degree in English.

He was past president of the Kane County Board of Realtors and a MAI member of the Appraisal Institute.

Mrs. Landberg is survived by three sons, Lynn Landberg, Keith (Arlene) and Kirk (Lynn), all of Geneva; grandchildren, Laura (Rick) Rush of Geneva, Michael (Kathleen) Landberg of Vadnais Heights, Minn., Brittany (David) Egan of LaFox, Meredith (Chris) Bong of Geneva, Timothy (Stacey) Landberg of Los Angeles and Jill (Ryan) LaMirand of Geneva; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; a brother, Maurice Potter; a sister, Eloise Hawthorne; and a daughter-in-law, Victoria Landberg.

His early childhood was spent in Arkansas. He attended junior high and high school in Poplar Bluff, Mo. After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam until 1967. He worked at Burgess Norton for 32

years.

He married his wife, Marietta, in 1968, and they made their home in St. Charles, where they raised their four children.

He is survived by his wife, Marietta; daughter, Wilma; son, Richard; daughter, Sheila; and daughter, Sandra; his brothers, Jim (Georgia) Rodney and Harold Rodney; his sister, Ruth Ann (Laron) Riggs; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Rosemary Saylors and Hazel Thompson; and his brothers, Charles Rodney and Richard Rodney.

A private family service will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to a local VA Hospital, American Cancer Society or Fisher House.

ST. CHARLES – The new owners of the Charlestowne Mall, The Krausz Companies, paid more than $9.5 million for the 1.1 million-squarefoot enclosed shopping center situated on about 80 acres at Kirk Road and Main Street in St. Charles.

Jay E. Krigsman, executive vice president of The Krausz Companies, said to the best of his knowledge, the new owners paid the same as the mall’s previous owner did.

Krausz is based in California, but has developed commercial, retail and industrial properties in California, Hawaii and Arizona, Krigsman said.

“It’s a redevelopment opportunity,” Krigsman said of the Charlestowne venture.

“The old Charlestowne Mall is worth $9.5 million, plus it’s worth the many millions and millions that will need to be invested into what we are going to call The Quad St. Charles. The plan ... it will turn out to be a good investment for us and a good amenity for the neighborhood when it’s done.”

The company would invest $50 million to $70 million, once all the conceptual drawings are done and budgets are in, Krigsman said.

The plan is for construction to start in April with a grand opening in time for back-to-school in 2015.

“It’s going to be a huge investment,” Krigsman said.

“It’s a huge commitment we are making to the community. We also believe in it. We would not do it if we did not

BATAVIA – Residents today can help get Batavia’s downtown area ready for the holiday season.

A “Light Up The Town” decorating event will take place today.

The idea came after Olmstead’s TV and Appliances owner Gene Olmstead started talking with other community members about a way to bring cheer to the downtown and to utilize new planters along Wilson Street for the winter season.

“We thought placing Christmas trees was a wonderful idea,” Joi Cuartero, executive director of Batavia MainStreet, said in a news release. “When Gene mentioned putting trees up at the council meeting, we agreed Batavia MainStreet could help rally the troops and make this happen.”

Decorating and putting lights on the trees will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today,

and all are invited to participate.

Those who have donated their time to adopt a tree and decorate them will meet at 122 W. Wilson St. to find their tree.

ST. CHARLES – Seniors are invited to gatherings at a Kane County forest preserve on the first Thursday of each month, during its “Senior Stroll” nature program series. Forest preserve district naturalists lead walks while sharing both the natural and cultural history of an area.

OPINIONS OUR VIEW: THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Thumbs up: to the many worthy subjects featured in the Kane County Chronicle’s Everyday Heroes section that published Wednesday.

These men and women are the lifeblood of our community. With so many organizations operating on shoestring budgets in this era, the willingness of community-minded mentors and volunteers to go above and beyond is critical to providing the offerings many of us take for granted.

While 23 local people were profiled in the Everyday Heroes section, even more were nominated, some of whom were too bashful about the public recognition to consent to being interviewed.

And, of course, there are many more incredible people who might not have been nominated, but nonetheless make a big difference in the lives of many on a daily basis.

In addition to providing the featured subjects some much-deserved plaudits, we hope the section inspires the rest of us to take stock of what we might be able to contribute for the greater good in the months and years to come.

It does not require a special skill set to be an Everyday Hero – just the proper motivation. Most of us can find something we are passionate enough about to make the time investment worthwhile.

Prioritizing our hectic, 21st century lifestyles can be daunting, but those who carve out enough time to uplift others deserve our respect and gratitude.

Thumbs down: to the city of Bata-

Helping seniors

via for dragging out the proposal of businessman Michael Grudecki to turn the city-owned Thomle building into an upscale martini lounge.

Grudecki, president of Vignette Home Decor in Batavia, originally made his proposal to aldermen in May, but the city has yet to vote on the matter.

Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said the city has apologized to Grudecki about how long it has taken for the process to play out. That apology was certainly warranted.

Even by the famously languid pace of government business, this has been much too long to leave a person’s prospective livelihood twisting in the wind.

Various other possibilities for the downtown space have been on the city’s radar, but it is unfair to Grudecki for the city to seemingly keep looking for something better while stringing him along.

Grudecki will be given the chance to make another presentation to the city next month – his original pitch must seem like ancient history by now – after which we hope the city finally acts on this legitimate proposal to create a different type of establishment than what exists in Batavia.

If a better option for the city is on the table, that’s fine, but this holding pattern has grown stale.

To the Editor: Recently, we celebrated our first ever Harvest Festival that brought together an incredible array of food, drink and fun that raised funds to help support the programs and services we provide for seniors.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Katje Nelson of BNC Enterprises for her energy, enthusiasm and hard work in pulling this event together. She was the driving force and did an outstanding job.

Budweiser and Silver Creek Winery sponsored the event, while the phenomenal area band Johnny & The Boomers volunteered with services and kept the dance floor filled all evening.

Restore Thanksgiving’s prominence How sad that even more stores are opening on Thanksgiving. This quintessential American holiday is rapidly being obliterated to satiate the voracious and greedy appetites of corporate retailers throughout this country. Equally sad are the many people who come to family gatherings and spend their time leafing through the sales papers and planning their strategy to march into the stores on Thanksgiving night, much like lemmings marching to the sea. What a shame. At least Costco and Nordstrom have announced they will not be open on Thanksgiving. Kudos to them. It’s time for a nationwide boycott of stores catering to the maddening crowds on Thanksgiving. It’s time to

Do-not-call list? Don’t get your hopes up Calling the do-not-call registry listed in last week’s Sound Off may not work as one would hope. When the law was first enacted, it worked the way it was intended. However, telemarketers have now found ways to circumvent the law, as evidenced in my own experience. In the last year, I have registered three times, twice online and once by phone, all to no avail. I even called Sen. Durbin’s office. I’ve been told that one must register a complaint with the FCC. However, these telemarketers, with their robotic messages, do not leave a phone number on caller ID. Instead, we see Florida, New York, Washington, D.C., but not a phone number. Thus, we can do nothing. This is an excellent example of a law that is being flagrantly disregarded. I do hope that anyone who registers with do not call gets the desired results, but it is best that you do not get your hopes up.

Still getting calls Whoever thinks that the donot-call registry really works is either delusional or lives on another planet. It is yet another way of wasting taxpayer money. I register several times a year, and I get at least a half-dozen calls per day.

Bumpouts aren’t good Whoever had the idea to

create bumpouts on our city streets didn’t put much thought into the idea. Teenagers out for a night of fun, heading downtown, Wilson Street to McDonald’s, laughing and not focusing on the road, hit a bumpout. This is a tragedy waiting to happen.

I would like to know one good reason for the bumpouts.

Unlock the exit doors Why is it that when exiting a store or a public building, one of the exit doors, usually the one on the right, is often locked. I don’t understand this. In this day and age of heightened security, where shootings are becoming more and more commonplace, it stands to reason that doors one uses to exit a store or a public building should all be open. In the event of an emergency, necessitating a rapid evacuation of a public place, having a locked door can result in serious injury or even death.

Are there no local ordinances to require such buildings to have all their exit doors unlocked?

Should I be angry?

I am just curious to see what others from the area think of this. I won’t sugarcoat the story because I really want to know how people feel based on facts.

We live in Geneva. I dropped off my husband at [the] train station one afternoon. I pulled into [a] handicapped spot because many are open right in front of the platform. A Geneva police officer pulled in behind me and turned around. Hubby reached into back seat to grab newspaper and proceeded to

get out. The officer pulls behind our car and hubby says, “She’s just dropping me off.” Officer says, “If I ever see your car parked here again I will give you a ticket.” I wasn’t parked. The car was in reverse with my foot on brake, and I was leaving. I honestly felt harassed, as he was so incredibly rude. We have lived here for 20 years and have never caused nor gotten in any trouble ... . Is this the way the people of Geneva and the surrounding area deserve to be treated? Does anybody else experience this type of treatment? Do you feel I have a right to be angry?

Not your business I don’t understand what all this hullabaloo is about gay people being married. It doesn’t matter. If they want to get married, let them get married.

And if you’re religious and you believe in the Bible, I urge you to read your Bible. Eve was made from Adam’s rib. That means there really isn’t that much difference between man and woman. It means that men are women and women are men because they are made from the same person. It’s not your business. If two men want to marry and two women want to marry, it’s their business. It doesn’t affect people who have been married or want to be married to a different sex. If you were made from Adam’s rib, you are a woman, and you’re actually part man. So there.

Dirty dancing My boss arranged an early celebration this year. The party was held in a classy ballroom, where a delicious meal was [served]. The DJ played fun music at the start. Around 8 p.m., his selection took a dive.

With my coworkers, twerking and lap dancing were on display. It was all in good fun, they say. A Miley Cyrus world with adults behaving badly is what I say. Days later, the good fun I realized was just a way to exhibit low-class behavior. Be careful at your parties this year.

There are cellphone cameras

everywhere. Be cautious how you dance and who is recording you. My dad, God rest his soul, would have left the party when the dirty dancing started. I wish I were as wise as my dad. Be smart. Think of my dad and leave the party when it turns dirty. Be a role model for good manners.

We do not need another park I’m responding to “A park would be valuable.” In St. Charles, it’s mostly the older people who live here. Geneva has more younger families, so there are more storefronts there. In St. Charles, it is pricey to live and to shop. We do not need another park in St. Charles. Who is going to maintain it? I can’t see it. As for affordable housing? Don’t bring it to St. Charles. And low rents?

No. There would be many people selling.

Leave the riverfront open I have three comments about two different articles. First, regarding the workshop on future housing in St. Charles.

We definitely need something for senior citizens that they can afford. And then in the same article, it mentioned how the riverfront can be good to attract younger people to St. Charles for water activities. It said the river’s worth really needs thinking through carefully. I agree with this. That brings me to my third comment – why in the world did we grant another extension for the developers of the First Street project? This will hide the riverfront. They’re going to use four- or five-story buildings. It will hide the riverfront. The extension is to April 8. That is so long. I think these developers should just give up. I don’t understand it. I think it’s a good sign that we should leave the riverfront open for us all to enjoy.

I’m a member of the Batavia American Legion Post 504. I attended the Nov. 11 Veterans Day program at the Batavia VFW. I wanted to compliment the Aurora Christian choir. They were fantastic. And afterward, my wife and I attended – with another veteran friend and his wife – Apple Villa, as they were giving away free lunches to veterans. We were pleasantly surprised when someone, another customer, paid our entire table’s bill. I really appreciate that. Thank you for that, and thank you to Apple Villa. And then at 4 o’clock, the Batavia American Legion were hosts at the Golden Corral for free dinners for all veterans.

The unofficial total listed 450 vets that were served, but over 1,000 customers, and the weather was very bad that night. I personally handed out American Legion literature to all the vets. I want to give a special thank you to Golden Corral for their efforts.

Something to be thankful for – cockroaches GOOD NATURED Pam Otto It’s the season for gratitude, a time of year when people make a special effort to list the things for which they are thankful.

As much as I wish this attitude would extend throughout the year (just like I wish folks would make every day Earth Day) it’s still good to see and hear so many people expressing appreciation for their many blessings: family, friends, our dedicated service men and women protecting our freedom.

My own list includes these good things, plus a few others.

Each morning when I turn on the shower, I am thankful for the miracle of abundant hot water. When I come home at night, I smile and give thanks for the welcoming warmth (in winter) and the comforting coolness (in summer) that my aging HVAC system still kicks out.

And when I’m sitting at my desk at work, I’m thankful for the Blattodea. Specifically, the cockroaches.

I’ve always been a sucker for the downtrodden and, let’s face it, there aren’t many organisms with worse reputations than our friends the roaches.

Yep, the creatures that rank low on virtually everyone’s list – the ones that are associated with filth and pestilence, the stars of commercials for Orkin, Raid and Black Flag’s Roach Motels – really do have some redeeming qualities.

The truth is, our planet would be a mess without them.

Of Earth’s 4,500-ish cockroach species (the reason for the ish is, entomologists still are discovering new ones), only about 15 are considered pesty. Those other 4,485-ish types of roaches are working hard every day to make our planet a better place.

All organisms have a job to do, and for roaches that to-do list includes consumption of organic matter – dead plant and animal material that,

While their intake is important, their output may be even more so. Cockroach, um, frass – the entomological term for bug poop – returns the valuable element nitrogen into the soil, making it richer and more fertile and enabling new plants to grow.

This natural process is vital to the success of ecosystems around the world.

But it also has application in manmade environments.

Say hello to blatticomposting – a still-evolving technique that relies on roaches to convert food waste into compost.

Researchers at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Environmental Interpretive Center have been experimenting with the use of Eublaberus spp., tropical roaches from South America, to consume lunch leftovers like banana peels, apple cores and melon

rinds. The facility’s collection of approximately 2,000 individuals can make an apple disappear in hours, and was able to transform more than 50 pounds of fruit and vegetable waste into nutrient-rich compost in only a few months.

I mentioned earlier that I give thanks for roaches while I’m at work. As I write this, I’m watching a group of 200 or so Blaptica dubia, or dubia roaches, consume the core of the Malus domestica, or apple, I had with lunch today. Adults and nymphs alike are scurrying about – inside their escape-proof bin – to get a crack at the sweet treat. I know that tomorrow morning all that will remain of the apple is the stem and seeds. The roaches, meanwhile, will be looking for more.

CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police in stepping up patrol efforts during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The goal of the program, which runs in conjunction with the Click It or Ticket and the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaigns is to ensure drivers use their seat belts and drive sober, especially during the times of the year when traffic is heavier.

Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said in a news release that while police officers will be out “around the clock,” they are prepared to focus additional enforcement on late-night traffic, when seat belt use is at is lowest and impaired driving is the biggest problem.

“Whether you’re going across town or across the state this Thanksgiving, please make sure everyone in the car is wearing their seat belt. As of Jan. 1, 2012, by law in Illinois, everyone must wear a seat belt no matter what seating position,” Hoffman said in the news re-

Man gets community service after burglary

Police said officers later determined that the two men committed a burglary on Sycamore Lane, where they said the two men stole the gas chainsaw, the miter saw and the skateboard.

Among them was Kathy Hofmann of Elburn.

She and her husband, Scott, and son, Chase, will be driving to Washington on Sunday, with a 19-foot semitrailer full of donated items, she said.

“The trailer is two-thirds full,” Hofmann said. “We’ll be in the St. Peter Church parking lot at 1 p.m. Saturday. ...

We could always use more supplies to bring down to the affected area.”

“This is something my husband and I decided to do,” Hofmann said. “We’re big be-

lievers in paying it forward.

Scott and I live in a small town. If something happened to us, other small towns would rally and help us.”

Going with them will be a friend, Michelle Calbeck from Batavia, and Mike and Micki Bilardello from North Aurora, Hofmann said. Each will drive their own cars.

Hofmann said she put the word out through her church, St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva, where school officials notified parents and the collection effort was announced at Mass.

The following weekend, the Hofmanns plan on returning to help sift through rubble and put items to save in plastic totes, she said.

The second effort is for adults only, no children, she said.

“My husband is a carpenter contractor and has his own company,” Hofmann said. “We’re putting on our tool belts and going to work.”

Saints don’t overthink on big first day

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WINNETKA – St. Charles East girls swimmers adopted “#JEAH” as the slogan on the back of this season’s state meet T-shirts, per senior Shea Hoyt’s recommendation.

“JEAH” is a nod to an affirmative catchphrase credited to Olympian Ryan Lochte, who’s not exactly known for his deep views on life.

The slang wasn’t quite overwhelming on a crowded New Trier pool deck during Friday’s state preliminaries.

Then again, it didn’t have to be. The Saints personified loosey-goosey on their own

while qualifying eight entries for today’s finals, including four in championship races.

“I think not overthinking it is a good idea,” Hoyt said.

East shined behind the duo of Iowa recruits Hoyt and Izzie Bindseil, plus sophomore Jordan Morling. Between individual and relay events, Bindseil and Morling both will be part of four swims today, while Hoyt competes in three.

Bindseil, seeded fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, will be part of the lengthiest championship final. Next comes the 200 medley relay of Morling, Hoyt, Isabel Herb and Katie Nagler.

“You get more big swims underneath your belt, and every time, it gets a little bit easier,” East coach Joe Cabel said.

Rosary, which advanced seven entries from prelims – including Kate Canfield (100 backstroke), Erin Hart (50 freestyle) and Annie Gosselin (200 individual medley) in championship finals – can attest to that.

Maintaining a grip on the football could be more of a concern in the numbing conditions but Piron quipped that standout running back Anthony Scaccia might be immune.

“Scaccia’s a high-energy kid – he gives off a lot of heat,” Piron said. “I don’t think he’s probably too concerned about it.”

Challenging field conditions also figure to be in play at Titan Stadium, though Boylan coach John Cacciatore said the temperature plunge could ac-

tually be helpful on that front.

“Right now we would call it a mud field,” Cacciatore said. “We’re a grass field, it’s just this time of year after the beatings of football and soccer, it’s [in rough condition]. If I’m hearing things correctly, on Saturday it’ll be 19 degrees and it might be frozen solid, so it might not be so bad by the time we get to Saturday afternoon.”

Piron is much more concerned about top-seeded Boylan’s team than the weather.

The Titans enjoyed consecutive, unbeaten state champion-

ship seasons in 2010-11 under former coach Dan Appino before going 11-1 in Cacciatore’s first season and starting this year 12-0.

That run of dominance includes soundly beating Marmion in the 6A state title game in 2010.

“I don’t know if people locally really know what playing Rockford Boylan is all about,” Piron said. “It’s not unlike playing Mount Carmel. It’s not unlike playing Montini. I mean, that’s who you’re going up against.”

While Aurora Christian’s game this evening will begin after sunset, the Eagles might be better insulated against the cold than Batavia.

That’s because the Eagles – with a much smaller roster than the Bulldogs – rely on many more two-way performers than Batavia, as is the norm in Class 3A. “When guys play both ways, they don’t get cold,” Eagles coach Don Beebe said.

“Last year, obviously, was not a very good year for us,”

junior Elaina Ricci said. “But it’s a learning experience and important to get here and come back. We have a lot more people making it back in individual events, and that’s the best part.”

Still, it wasn’t all elation.

Rosary narrowly missed the six-lane cut for the championship finals in the 200 freestyle relay (0.01 seconds) and 200 medley relay (0.21).

The team instead enters with the top-seeded time in the consolation finals of both

events. For team scoring purposes, there’s an 18-point gulf between winning a championship relay (32 points) and a consolation relay (14).

“It was really nerve-racking,” said Hart, a St. Charles resident who was part of the 200 free relay and also will swim for the consolaton title in the 100 free. “Everything about this meet is nerve-racking, but we did really come through so far.”

St. Charles North sophomore Monica Guyett qualified

for the consolation final in the 500 free, as her 4:58.61 preliminary time fell five-hundreths of a second short of the championship cut.

Guyett later competed with Loriel Hutchison, Sammy Sauer and Grace Samuelson as part of a 400 free relay that won its heat but was not among the top 12 times.

As the North Stars awaited their fate watching the final heats and the scoreboard, they mostly smiled and socialized.

Why not? A few steps away, coach Rob Rooney sported North’s team shirt, a pink ensemble with a modified Eminem lyric on the back: “Had a dream I was queen/I woke up – still queen.”

“We like to be really fun, because if you’re too serious, then you may not swim as well,” Guyett said. “We just like to keep it energetic.”

JEAH, that seems to be the way to go this time of year.

Football teams still playing this late in the season have to expect cold weather, and today’s state semifinal playoff games won’t disappoint on that count.

With the high temperature for today forecast for 23 degrees in Rockford, the Batavia football team’s 1 p.m. Class 6A state semifinal at Rockford Boylan will be the coldest game in memory for most – if not all – the contestants.

Aurora Christian could face even more frigid conditions considering the 5 p.m. kickoff time against visiting Stillman Valley in today’s Class 3A semi.

Football is a sport for tough guys, and that’s the approach players plan to take.

“My mom keeps telling me to wear long sleeves and stuff but I’m not doing that,” Batavia junior defensive end Josh Leonhard said. “We’re defense, we’re running around a lot. I just don’t think it will be a problem.”

Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron also minimized the weather’s potential impact on the day.

“In the last couple weeks we’ve had some days in the 30s and 20s for practice, and the kids did fine,” Piron said. “It’s not going to affect anybody.

Once you get playing, you get all warm. It isn’t like you’re out there standing, freezing your butt off. You’re excited.

The North Stars lost to Wheaton North, 67-62, in the first game of the York Thanksgiving Tournament.

“Obviously, I’d like to get the win, but I thought the girls played hard,” Masoncup said.

“It was an exciting basketball game for the first game of the season. … We have a lot of things to work on, but there’s definitely signs we can be pretty good by the end of the year.”

One of those signs was the play of junior forward Nichole Davidson, who scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

“I thought we did so good,” Davidson said. “We had so much good effort. We hustled.

Davidson showed an ability to score in the paint, from the baseline, and even from the outside. Her near-3 from the left side gave the North Stars a 31-20 lead late in the second quarter.

“I tried my best and I gave good effort,” Davidson said.

“Coach has been telling me to work on my defense and be able to just work hard, so that’s what I did.”

Davidson had a pair of blocks and also came up with two steals.

“I thought some of the ones [Rosencrants] got were some tough calls, especially with what was going on inside,” Masoncup said. “She needs to learn from that – she’s a sophomore – and we move forward. She’s going to have to go against some big girls in our conference.”

Going up against Wheaton North’s 6-1 senior forward Chrissy Baird was good practice for Rosencrants and the rest of the North Stars. Baird had some foul problems of her own in the first half and was limited to two points, but the UCLA recruit came on strong in the second half, scoring 16 points to help the Falcons erase a 34-28 halftime deficit.

Doing the most damage for Wheaton North, however, was junior Kelly Thornton. She scored 22 points and banked in a runner at the third-quarter buzzer that gave the Falcons a 53-51 lead.

St. Charles North pulled to within one three times in the fourth quarter, but was never able to regain the lead.

The North Stars had a pair of chances to tie the game or take the lead in the final minute, but missed on a 3-point try and also committed a costly turnover. They had 26 turnovers on the night.

“We made some mistakes,” Masoncup acknowledged.

“They’re a young team. If I’m looking at improvement, I think I’ve seen it just since the start of the year. They had a rough go of it last year against Wheaton North, so we’re making strides.”

Junior guard Sam Novak added 15 points for St. Charles North and sophomore forward Lauren Neslund did a nice job picking up some of the slack for the foul-plagued Rosencrants, scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds.

The Mooseheart boys basketball team is again poised to go 7-foot-1, 6-10 and 6-7 this season with gifted South Sudanese transfer students Akim Nyang, Makur Puou and Mangisto Deng.

Just don’t forget about 5-8 sophomore Freddy Okito. He might hold the Red Ramblers’ state championship ambitions in his much smaller palms.

As the Ramblers prepare to open the season next week at the Canton Thanksgiving Tournament, the development of Okito at point guard might be the single most crucial factor in Mooseheart troubleshooting ball-handling woes that ended the Ramblers’ 2012-13 season in gut-wrenching fashion.

As you might recall – and as the Ramblers surely have tried to forget – Mooseheart led Chicagoland Jewish Academy by 10 points with a little more than 3 minutes to go before

Mooseheart went 24-6 and generated unprecedented buzz for its basketball program last season but the sectional loss still shined a harsh spotlight on the team’s guardplay and ball-handling.

“Our big issue is being able to handle the pressure and the press,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said earlier this week. “Since practice started on the 11th, we have worked every day on breaking the press. It was our downfall, I think, from last year.

“I don’t think anyone is happy, in all honesty, with [last season]. I think everyone on our team counted last year as a disappointing

season to us, and we’re looking to improve on that, and the first way be able to do that is handle the press better.”

Successfully doing so isn’t a one-man plan, but Ahrens expects Okito to be a big part of the solution.

Okito saw some time on varsity as a freshman but has made major strides toward becoming Mooseheart’s lead ball-handler this offseason.

Junior wing Hameed Odunewu and Deng – who possesses a guard’s skill set despite his 6-7 build – also will have the ball in their hands a lot, and when all else fails, lobbing the ball up to the biggest guys on the floor on inbounds passes is a workable Plan B. “I don’t think our guards worked hard enough to get open [on inbounds plays] so I think it’s going to be pretty simple – working a lot harder to get open, and then we have some safety valve things to make sure we

can get the ball inbounds,” Ahrens said.

Once Mooseheart moves the ball upcourt, the Ramblers are well positioned to again overwhelm most opponents, especially the small schools on their schedule.

Puou, who averaged 19 points and 10.8 rebounds last season, has an improved mid-range stroke, Nyang is more of an offensive threat than he was last year and Deng – just about finished recovering from offseason shoulder surgery – will continue to be a matchup disaster for most opponents, Ahrens said.

Last season included much-publicized eligibility questions that were a major distraction.

The absence of that drama, plus a year of high school basketball under their belts, should benefit the South Sudanese seniors greatly.

Rosary sophomore Annie Gosselin qualified for two individual events and the 200 freestyle relay at Friday’s IHSA girls swimming and diving state preliminaries at New Trier. Last season, she placed ninth in the 100 backstroke, as perennial contender Rosary slipped to a tie for 34th place. Refocused and re-energized with a young but deep team, the Beads descended on Winnetka with renewed trophy aspirations. Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley addressed the team’s morale with Gosselin as part of the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat.

There’s still room to improve, but I’m happy where they’re at right now.”

It likely will not be known whether the three will be academically eligible to play college basketball at a fouryear school or need to go the junior college route until after the season ends.

They’ll have several high-profile opportunities to showcase their talents, including at Batavia’s tradition-rich Night of Hoops and in a game at the United Center against Gage Park.

Fans who turn out might count Mooseheart’s rim-rattling dunks or the number of opponents’ shots swatted.

Ahrens will keep closer watch on the turnover tally.

How has the team mentally approached improving from last season?

So far this year, we’ve had a lot better year than last year. … Last year, the majority of the team tapered for sectionals, but this year, the majority tapered for state. So I think that will make a huge difference right there. This year we have a lot more qualifiers for state, you know. Someone qualified for every event except for the 500 (freestyle), [diving] and then our 400 free relay didn’t make it, which was kind of disappointing.

But our sectional meet was awesome. I guess that was the only blemish you could say we had to it.

Weekend Chit-chat with ROSARY SWIMMER ANNIE GOSSELIN Thinking back to a year ago, is the excitement level a night and day difference?

It’s more for me, at least.

Last year, I was a freshman, so I didn’t really know what to expect. The year before that, when I was an eighth-grader, I went to

watch state, but watching and then competing is so different from each other. Going into state this year kind of knowing what to expect with the experience, that just gets me even more excited.

What do you remember about the vantage point from the New Trier stands as an eighth-grader?

I remember it being really crowded in the stands when I went. There was a lot of people on deck. … It’s like a smaller pool, but I don’t know, I kind of like it, how it’s a little bit smaller. Because you can really feel the energy in there, you know.

It’s a short drive from Rosary to [the Regole Natatorium

at Marmion]. Does the team carpool together?

Yeah, usually whoever can drive, we’ll drive with them. I’m driving with Kate Canfield, one of our captains, and so I’ve been doing with her all year. And then Erin [Hart] drives a few people and Elaina [Ricci] and everyone that’s able to drive will drive.

So yeah, we all help out.

Does a taper workout feel dramatically different?

I don’t feel that different.

I guess in the water, I’m not as tired. My body doesn’t hurt as much. In-season, being sore is a normal feeling, I guess you could say, but now I’m not sore. I’m ready to go.

STC East girls basketball falls to Boylan KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE SCHAUMBURG – The St. Charles East girls basketball team paid for a poor start on Friday night, losing to Rockford Boylan, 79-63, at the Schaumburg Thanksgiving Tournament.

East trailed, 21-2, early on.

“We were in man-to-man and we were just not playing very well,” East coach Lori Drumtra said of the bad start.

“We had some costly turnovers, we were not shooting very well and we were giving

up way too many, way too many, easy baskets.”

The Saints (1-1) came within six points at one point of the third quarter but the Titans were able to regroup.

Mabel Cummins (right), a seventh-grader from Elburn, recently went to challenge Wisconsin’s best junior bowlers for three days of competition in two separate events. Cummins’ first stop was the 2013 Junior Hall of Fame Tournament on Nov. 10 at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Milwaukee. Cummins partnered with 15 year-old Michael Nape Jr. from Aurora to challenge nearly 200 competitors in a step-ladder format. The two, supported by regional champion Jim Capps from Kenosha, Wis., made two cuts and reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated. They earned $160 each for future college expenses and collected bowling gear and gift certificates in a raffle of prizes donated by Milwaukee-area businesses.

A week later, Cummins journeyed to Appleton, Wis., for a two-day Elite Youth Tour tournament. The EYT is a nationwide series promoted by Professional Bowling Association stars Jason Belmonte and Diandra Asbaty. Cummins joined forces with Aurora resident Jordan Newham in a doubles “sweeper” involving 14 teams of the region’s best young strikers.

The two finished the doubles event in fourth place with a total pin-fall of 1,334. Their score was based on a seven-game series that included a combination of individual and team (Baker-style) scoring. Cummins and Newham also competed in the singles “scratch” competition in their respective divisions. Newham finished in fifth place among U20 (age 16 to 20) girls while Cummins placed second, just one point behind the winner after an 11-game session in the U15 girls group.

SPORTS NEIGHBORS BULLETIN BOARD St. Charles lacrosse club to conduct clinic The St. Charles Lacrosse club will host a one-day skills clinic Dec. 26 for boys and girls grades 4 through 8 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The clinic will be held at the SportsPlex of St. Charles, 1700 Foundry Road, St. Charles, IL 630-762-8100.

This clinic is appropriate for all players’ skill levels and will

be instructed by coaches and players from the St. Charles East and North boys and girls lacrosse teams.

Fee for the clinic will be $40.

Players registered by Dec. 6 will receive a clinic T-shirt. Registration deadline is Dec. 20. All participating players must bring a mouth guard.

Stepping outside the box to try a new role Hanging out with adolescents can be so disconcerting. They seem to notice every little step we parents take outside of our parent “box.”

“Did you get your science homework done?” I asked Holly, Wednesday afternoon.

“Yep,” she replied.

“Cool Beans,” I said.

“I’ve never heard you say that before!” she said.

She cracks me up. Yes, there I go again, tiptoeing outside the box.

Last Saturday, when I auditioned for Playhouse 38’s (Geneva Park District) production of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” it happened again.

I’ve been quietly flirting with the idea of auditioning for live theater since high school, when I was cast in the lead role of Nanette in the musical “No, No, Nanette.” I had to turn it down due to a sports conflict, but when I saw the open call for auditions for the park district’s production of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” a show I already know and adore, I figured it would be just the thing to finally get me to dip my big toe back in to theater.

I figured that perhaps I could play a small part. You know, that of Mary’s

For a happy moment I imagined pajamas and no makeup, just a mic.

Perfect! Right up my alley, I decided, so I impulsively picked up the phone and made an appointment for my audition.

And then I took a second look at the notice and read something about “five actors performing the voices of dozens of characters.” Huh. When I Googled the script and realized that this “radio show” would actually be performed on stage in front of a live audience in an actual theater – and calls for a few women to cover several roles, including the lead female parts of young Mary and the vampy Violet, I laughed out loud.

Been a while since I was a 20-something after all. Oops! I considered canceling. I even called the park district

The holiday program, conducted by the choir’s founder and music director Jeffrey Hunt, will include four songs arranged for choir and guitar, which will be the first time an instrument has made an appearance at a St. Charles Singers Christmas concert.

The guest artist on guitar will be Croatian-born Goran Ivanovic, who studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

office to make sure it was OK that I audition even though I’m not a Geneva resident, half-hoping they’d say it wasn’t. It was.

When Holly and I watched a trailer of another theater’s production of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” on YouTube, and she expressed horror at the prospect that I might have to play the sexy Violet, or, worse, even have to kiss George Bailey – furthering the notion that we moms should just stay in character – I wasn’t sure she was wrong.

Whatever.

I colored my hair. I got dressed. I found the theater. The “what the heck am I doing?” thought sprinted back and forth through my addled brain as I parked my car, dodged raindrops and opened the door.

What fun it was for me to discover, however, that everyone else auditioning around the time I did (but for one young lady, and a very young man perched mighty uncomfortably on a chair), was also a middle-aged woman. Ha! I could just imagine similar conversations taking place with their own kids – or in their own heads – but there we were, nonetheless. Go us!

I’m not sure how many auditioned

altogether, but I understand that the “competition was stiff” for the three spots available for women. I didn’t get one but was really glad I went. I learned a lot just from listening to the others read and was really impressed with some of the hopefuls. It’ll be fun to see the show, slated to be performed the third and fourth weekends in December.

I completely understand why my kids might prefer to see me merely as their marvelous chauffeur, since I do my writing and counsel my clients during their school hours.

Perhaps it’s not such a bad thing for them to see me stepping outside the box.

Maybe they learned that trying something new – and even mildly terrifying, can, at the very least, be a fun way to spend an afternoon, if not be a bold step in a wonderful new direction. I know I did.

Besides, I have very real intentions to go hang-gliding someday. Auditioning for a play isn’t such a huge leap, right? I may just have to try it again.

‘Go For Sisters’ saved by stellar cast

By AL ALEXANDER More Content Now In high school, Bernice and Fontayne were the bomb. Now they are just empty shells, beaten down by poor life choices and a system that seldom caters to black women.

Day after day, they pick through the ashes of mighthave-beens and if-onlys, trying to figure out at what point it all went wrong.

How these two old, but long-estranged friends begin to find themselves again is the subject of “Go for Sisters,” John Sayles’ latest treatise on race, class and social injustice.

It’s not one of the best efforts by the fiercely independent director of “Lone Star.” But if you can get past the ridiculous plot machinations and reams of expository dialogue, you’ll find an intriguing character study in the “Lone Star” mode about the borders between family, friends and countries. Yet a lot of what works is due more to the outstanding performances than Sayles’ shockingly subpar writing. And he draws three dandies from Edward James Olmos as a crusty, retired L.A. detective and Lisa Gay Hamilton and Yolanda Ross as the former high school pals who hire him to help them find Hamilton’s kidnapped son.

Sayles immerses you in the lives of their broken-and-humbled characters, who are all victims of their own excesses.

For Olmos’ Freddy Suarez it was less than honorable police work; for Ross’ Fontayne, it was too much nose candy; and for Hamilton’s Bernice, a strident parole officer, it was being too strict with her son, who now finds himself held

One by one, Sayles introduces us to them, beginning with Bernice, seen getting tough with her paroles as they make the case that staying out of trouble is nary impossible in neighborhoods where trouble lurks around every corner. That includes Fontayne, who, irony of ironies, gets assigned to her long estranged pal, Bernice.

The scene when they first meet in Bernice’s office is at once tense and heartbreaking, as it becomes clear that even though they are on opposite sides of the law, they still could, as the title suggests, go for sisters.

If only they could find something to bring them back together. No worry.

Sayles is all too eager to accommodate them with a series of contrivances, led

by Bernice going to Fontayne to appeal for her help

in infiltrating the Southern California underworld in hopes of making connections with the people holding her son hostage.

Their rote sleuthing eventually leads them to Suarez, a disgraced cop who will do just about anything for a buck, or more precisely, a few thousand bucks.

The problem is that once Sayles brings all three together, he doesn’t know what to do with them. So, why not send them to Tijuana to get mixed up with the Chinese mob? It’s as stupid as it sounds, and rendered with no cliché unturned.

But the performances are so rich, particularly by Olmos as a man whose failing sight serves as the perfect metaphor for a cop who long ago became blind to justice.

Olmos makes Suarez funny, sad and simply a delight to be around, especially when he starts picking on an electric guitar and

reminiscing about how his father told him to “act like an American” after they sneaked across the border when he was a child. “And what could be more American,” he quips, “than being in a rock ‘n’ roll band?”

It’s a sweet moment that later pays off in a good gag when he and the ladies try to pass themselves off as a second coming of Tony Orlando and Dawn to get past the border guards.

It’s a great moment, but there needed to be more like it to liven up what becomes a bit of a dirge once they enter into Mexico.

In that respect, Sayles fails his actors. But, lucky for him, they never fail him.

Normally, bacteria belonging mostly to the Lactobacillus family live harmlessly in the vagina.

There, they produce chemicals that keep the vagina mildly acidic. In BV, these bacteria are replaced by other types of bacteria. These “newcomers” are not normally present in the vagina in such large numbers.

Many women with BV do not have symptoms. In those who do, it can cause the “fishy” vaginal odor that you describe.

It can also cause a yellow or white vaginal discharge. The discharge seen in BV tends to be thinner than the “cheesy,” thick discharge seen in vaginal yeast

Your doctor can diagnose BV based on the results of a gynecological exam and lab tests of your vaginal fluid. There is no perfect test. But if you have three of the following criteria, you likely have bacterial vaginosis: • White, thin coating on your vaginal walls during the pelvic exam; • A pH test of vaginal discharge that shows low acidity; • Fishy odor of vaginal discharge; • Vaginal skin cells that are coated with bacteria when the doctor looks at your discharge under a microscope.

Doctors commonly treat BV with antibiotics that eliminate specific bacteria. These drugs can be taken as pills by mouth or applied as a vaginal cream or gel; both treatments are equally effective. But if you are pregnant, some experts recommend the pills instead of the vaginal gel, because they get deeper into potentially infected tissues and may be more effective in eradi-

cating the infection.

All women with symptoms of BV should be treated. Left untreated, the condition may cause pelvic inflammatory disease, an infection involving the uterus, ovaries, or the tubes from the ovaries to the uterus (the oviducts). The infection can spread to other nearby organs, such as the liver.

Pelvic inflammatory disease can produce pain, fevers and sometimes discharge from the vagina. If it is not promptly diagnosed and treated, it can cause scarring of the oviducts. This, in turn, can lead to infertility.

That’s because the eggs cannot get past the scar tissue.

In women who are pregnant, BV increases the risk of premature labor and delivery.

Very few of my patients have heard of bacterial vaginosis (BV), but it is a relatively common condition that can change from a minor annoyance to a serious medical problem. So, ask your doctor if this might be what is causing the bothersome odor.

Since e-cigarettes contain no tobacco, the manufacturers say their products offer advantages over those who smoke tobacco cigarettes. However, the Centers for Disease Control said e-cigarettes may be addictive and dangerous.

Many health experts are asking questions about the possible side effects of inhaling nicotine vapor as well as other health risks they might pose to both the user and to the public.

Since the use of e-cigarettes is a debatable alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes, I suggest your family continue encouraging dad to stop smoking tobacco cigarettes, and not to start substituting with e-cigarettes.

It’s not easy to eliminate the smoking habit, but it can be accomplished. Don’t give up!

Most of my columns are clearcut. This one is much less so.

However, many years ago, my then partner, David Greenwood, and I discussed grand slams.

These are major point winners ... and losers. We knew that most authorities recommend leading a trump against a grand. It is assumed that a pair will not bid seven unless its trump suit is solid. So, to avoid giving away a trick, a trump lead has to be safe.

We decided that we could cash in on this. We agreed to bid seven if we knew the only missing key-card was the trump queen. Then, if the lead was a trump, it would pick up the queen for us; if the lead was from a side suit, we would play the opening leader for the trump queen. We went three for three, and this was playing against internationals, not beginners.

(We were using an early form of Roman Key-Card Blackwood called Byzantine Blackwood, when we could find out about the trump king and queen.)

The declarer in today’s deal would have benefited from joining our discussion.

South opened with a weak two-bid. North used Blackwood, then jumped to seven diamonds.

(Yes, he might have bid seven no-trump.)

West led the heart jack. South knew that with nine trumps, the odds favored playing out the ace and king. So, he won with his heart queen, played a trump to dummy’s king, and returned the diamond 10 toward his ace – unlucky.

You, though, will know to finesse through West. And if you believe in this theory, you will finesse on the first round, in case West has all four trumps!
