uring the last several weeks, I had the privilege of meeting and photographing 23 “Everyday Heroes” throughout Kane County for a special section published this

week.

Every single person I met inspired me.

I grew up as part of a family rooted in its community, and these 23 people exemplified

the same ideals my parents and grandparents instilled in me.

One of those heroes was Batavia resident Sue Campbell, who showed off her Amazon

parrot while giving me a tour of her home.

I had such a blast chatting and laughing with our heroes as they let me into their lives.

Applications being accepted for Fox Valley Park Board KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Applications from Kane County residents interested in being appointed to the Fox Valley Park District will be accepted at the Kane County Board Office through Friday, according to a news release.

A formal vetting process by a special advisory panel is scheduled to begin Monday, and selections presented to the full Kane County Board on Dec. 10.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has the responsibility to make appointments to the district and fill vacancies with the advice and consent of the Kane County Board. The Fox Valley Park

District is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees.

County Board chairmen appoint board members in counties that have a proportionate share of the population in the district. Currently, the Kane County Board chairman appoints six members, and the

DuPage County Board chairman appoints one member.

Each board member is equally responsible for seeing that the parks are properly managed in terms of planning, policy and decisions that the board has agreed on in a regular or special meeting.

Forest preserve takes issue with report Elgin League claims ‘mission drift’; Hoscheit defends district’s actions

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Kane County forest preserves are home to more than trees and trails, offering many options for recreation and education – from the new nature center at LeRoy Oakes near St. Charles to horseback riding at Blackberry Maples near Elburn.

But, according to a study by the Elgin Area League of Women Voters, the forest preserve district has been committing “mission drift.” The study asserts that the district acts more like a park district than a forest preserve district.

“I find that troublesome,” said Carol Grom, League president and chairwoman of the group that did the study. “I am all for having parks and soccer fields, but they do not belong in a forest preserve. ... It is not appropriate for land that is ‘preserving nature.’ ” Forest Preserve District President John Hoscheit of St. Charles said the organization is biased and its report does not support accurate conclusions.

“It’s easier to understand where she ... and the group is coming from if you perceive them not to be an independent group,” Hoscheit said. “The basis for the opinion is they don’t want the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge. ... Their mission is to stop the bridge, and in the meantime, try to discredit the forest preserve.”

The group takes to task the possibility of gravel mining in the Brunner Family Forest Preserve in Dundee Township, a 741-acre property purchased in 2008. It was the subject of another League study in 2012.

Grom disputes Hoscheit’s assertion.

“The bridge was a foregone conclusion,” Grom said. “Our report began from them looking at mining for gravel. That was the instigation for the report, not the parkway.”

She said the district backed away from gravel mining once it was made an election issue.

The 33-page report, issued earlier this month, asserts that when enabling legislation for forest preserves, enacted in

1913, permitted land acquisition of natural forests for protecting and preserving “flora, fauna and scenic beauties ... to restore, restock protect, and preserve the natural forests ... as nearly as may be, in their natural state and condition, for the purpose of the education, pleasure, and recreation of the public.”

Voters established the Forest Preserve District of Kane County in 1925 with essentially the same mission.

A 1996 amendment to the state’s enabling legislation amended the mission to include recreational and cultural facilities, golf courses, museums, ice rinks, golf courses and tennis courts. The district owns the Philip B. Elfstrom Events Center where the Cougars play at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark and the Fox Valley Ice Arena – other uses the report finds fault with.

Grom said the forest preserve district should be preserving natural areas for everyone’s benefit instead of focusing on programs, services and facilities.

“They’ve lost track of their mission,” said Grom, a Sleepy Hollow resident. “When you have turned forest preserve land into community gardens and athletic fields – they’re never going to be restored to any form of natural land.”

The study also criticized intergovernmental agreements that the forest preserve has throughout the county. Getting involved in these, Grom said, is not the district’s function.

“It should be about preserving natural areas for the benefits of the people,” Grom said.

Hoscheit said in more urban areas of the county, where there is less forest land to buy because more land is developed, these intergovernmental agreements – including ball fields and a $2 million bridge in Aurora – are a necessity.

“Board members say, ‘I can’t support it [a project] or my constituents won’t support it, if it is without investment in these communities,’ ” Hoscheit said.

“We have agreements with every park district and city parks department in the county.”

area of criticism by the League – will connect city property at RiverEdge Park with existing trails in the nearby forest preserve district, Hoscheit said.

Grom does not see it that way.

“They diverted referendum funds for use by another governmental entity,” Grom said.

Hoscheit said the referendum included capital projects, and this qualified.

Another example of the district’s cooperation is the purchase of the old corrections facility in the Valley View area of St. Charles Township, he said. Lawmakers successfully pushed the state to sell its 40 acres to the district, adding it to nearby Tekakwitha Forest Preserve, he said.

“We did not have the resources for improvements, so the St. Charles Park District teams up with us, and now we have a combination dog park, ball diamonds and hiking trails,” Hoscheit said. “We preserved the property and renovated this neighborhood ... to make it beautiful open space.”

The Brunner Family preserve was another multi-agency effort, he said. The district tried to buy the property for years, and when the owner died, the estate made its 750 acres available for $40 million, he said.

“We had just passed a referendum, but that would have taken 60 percent of the money, and we had made other commitments to get it [the referendum] passed,” Hoscheit said.

“It was top of the line for development. Carpentersville want-

ed to put town homes on it.”

The county wanted right-ofway land for the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge, but the corridor would displace a 20-acre park, he said.

“I said, ‘We’ll buy the right of way and give you 20 acres of the 750 acres, and you give us the money to get us over the hump,’ ” Hoscheit said. “If we didn’t buy it, 1,000 town homes and the bridge would have gone in anyway. ... The way we got it done was better than not having it at all.”

Those who support the open space referendums include preservationists, but also a large core group wanting bike trails and wanting the district to work cooperatively with other entities, he said.

“We try to leverage our dollars to get more open space and parks,” Hoscheit said. “We try to cater to the majority and address everyone’s concerns.”

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which provides many of the matching grants the district relies on to buy property, affirms the district’s plans, he said.

“They look at it and see if it fits the criteria,” Hoscheit said.

“They feel we are carrying out the mission. What better group than the DNR – if they thought we were not carrying out the mission, they would say, ‘Sorry.’ ” Several reports on this and other issues regarding the Kane County Forest Preserve District are available on the Elgin Area League of Women Voters website, www.lwvelginarea.org.

Longtime Arcada Theatre organist Jim Shaffer died Tuesday. He was 78. over all those years to maintain the instrument. I wanted to give him the respect and at-

tention that he deserved.”

The Arcada Theatre first opened in 1926, attracting such

performers as George Burns and Gracie Allen. Onesti Entertainment Corp. took over

the management of the theater in 2005.

Shaffer spent several decades maintaining and repairing the theater’s organ. In an interview earlier this year in the Kane County Chronicle’s sister publication, St. Charles Republican, Shaffer described it as a “labor of love.”

Shaffer, a retired railroad employee, said a love of pipe organ music led him to join the Chicago Area Theatre Organ Enthusiasts nearly four decades ago. Until a few years ago, Shaffer didn’t know how to play the instrument.

“I finally thought I would love to play that big organ up there,” Shaffer said in the interview. “I kept working on it until I could do it.”

Onesti will deliver the eulogy at a funeral service for Shaffer at 3 p.m. Sunday at Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Place, Aurora. The visitation will precede the service from noon to 3 p.m. at The Healy Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Chicago Area Theatre Organ Enthusiasts.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A St. Charles Township man has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty last week to possessing child pornography.

Refugio M. Padilla Jr., 34, of the 7N200 block of Barb Hill Drive, was arrested at his home Jan. 17, said Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Pat Gengler. Court documents show that, in addition to the three-year sentence, Kane County Circuit Judge Karen Simpson also ordered Padilla to pay $2,365 in fines.

Court documents show that charges of reproducing and disseminating child pornography of a victim younger than 13 were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

Gengler said the initial investigation into Padilla started with the Naperville Police Department, but the Kane County Sheriff’s Office took over once police determined that Padilla’s residence was in St. Charles Township.

Gengler said it’s common for investigations into child pornography to start in another police jurisdiction, and said the forensic computer investigation can take a long time “depending on the skill level of the suspects.”

Sheriff’s deputies had obtained a search warrant, Gengler said, and a preliminary search showed Padilla had about 100 images on his computer that might have contained child pornography.

“Very rarely do you get a case like this where there is only one image,” Gengler said.

ST. CHARLES – As the longtime organist at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, Jim Shaffer sometimes received as much acclaim as the acts gracing the stage.

Shaffer died Tuesday at his home in Aurora. He was 78.

“We called him our resident rock star,” said Ron Onesti, president and CEO of Onesti Entertainment Corp. and the Arcada Theatre. “The crowds went crazy for him. They treated him like the rock star that he was.”

Shaffer was the perfect fit for the Arcada Theatre, Onesti said.

“He personified the heart and soul of what I was to trying to recreate with the Arcada Theatre,” he said. “I always vowed to him that no matter if it was a heavy metal band or a comedy show, I would always start the show with him and the pipe organ to expose not only the wonders of the great instrument itself, but also in tribute to the work that he did

Oberweis proposes legislation to allow Sunday car sales

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com Earlier this week, State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, introduced legislation that would allow consumers to purchase cars on Sundays.

A law has been on the books since 1983 that prohibits auto dealers from selling cars on Sundays, which was supported by car State Sen. dealers when it Jim Oberweis was enacted.

Oberweis said he’s heard arguments for keeping the status quo, but said the law is “one more example of government intrusion.”

He said consumers can purchase cars on Sundays in 32 states, and he thinks it’s time for Illinois to “modernize.”

“It turns out this [1983 law] was pushed by car dealers because they didn’t want to sell cars on Sundays,” he said. “But consumers want to buy cars on Sundays. The government has no place in

that. They should have that right.”

He said some car dealers have argued that Sunday car sales wouldn’t mean any more car sales – it would just drive customers to come in Sundays instead of another day during the week.

Oberweis said car dealers that choose to be closed Sundays can do so, much like businesses such as Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby choose to be closed Sundays.

“Don’t use the government to force competitors to do what you want to do,” Oberweis said.

He decided to introduce the legislation because he’d heard from a lot of consumers who wanted the option to buy a car on Sunday, but some car dealers want the law to remain in place.

“I met with the Auto Dealers Association Board of Directors earlier this week, and they are not very happy,” he said.

Oberweis said he doesn’t expect any further action to be taken on the legislation until next year.

Aurora Rotary Club hosts annual Festival of Lights AURORA – Aurora’s Festival of Lights will return for its seventh year, presented in partnership between the Rotary Club of Aurora and the city of Aurora.

PLATO CENTER – Eugene M. Boehne, 78, of Plato Center, passed away, surrounded by the love of his family, Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at his home after a long battle with mesothelioma.

Eugene was born Aug. 20, 1935, the son of Martin and Esther Boehne in Itasca.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1953. On June 14, 1958, Eugene married the love of his life, Lois Tucker.

In 1958, shortly after they were married, Eugene began his service to his country with the United States Army, where he served the next two years.

Eugene was a carpenter by trade and worked most of his career with Wetzel Construction in Elgin.

Throughout the years, Eugene also worked many side jobs, from farming to snow plowing.

Eugene was a big sports enthusiast, especially when his grandchildren were involved. He spent countless hours in the shed, constantly working on his lawn mower.

A big “breakfast guy,” Eugene paid a visit to every restaurant around, whether they just opened their doors or if it was his 100th visit.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Boehne; three children, Lorry, Jeff and Randy; five grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Samuel, Nicholas, Danielle and Rachel; his brother, Robert (Cathy); and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Earl.

The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. A memorial service celebrating his life will begin at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Curt Berg of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in La Fox will officiate.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The composer of St. Charles’ official city song, “In St. Charles,” is slated to return to his hometown next week to sing during the Holiday Homecoming kickoff ceremony.

The song first was performed by those in attendance at the Oct. 21 St. Charles Government Operations Committee meeting, which is when the committee gave its unanimous recommendation to the City Council to approve the song. Aldermen gave their unanimous approval Monday, making “In St. Charles” the official city song.

The song was written and composed by Jim Masters, a former St. Charles resident who now is a lecturer at Ohio State University. He plans to

perform the song during the Lighting of the Lights ceremony at 5 p.m. Nov. 29 at 50 S. First St. The composer’s sister, Barbara Masters, will be playing accompaniment on the keyboard, according to a news release from the Downtown St. Charles Partnership.

The ceremony will feature music by students from both North and East High School chorales, who will provide choral background for Jim Masters as he performs, states the release. Lyrics will be passed around to those in attendance.

“The highlight of the evening will come when all the townspeople in attendance will join in singing this chorus together and then witness the lighting of the city’s holiday tree,” the release states.

Local residents help in tornado relief efforts

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia resident Reed Callahan saw for himself Wednesday the devastation caused after a tornado tore through the community of Washington on Sunday.

Callahan, a member of the Knights of Columbus 2191, helped deliver supplies to Washington that were collected by the Knights and Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia.

“Washington is half-flattened,” he said. “There were

more than 500 homes that were damaged and another 500 that were partly damaged.”

And he said those who also are delivering supplies should be patient.

“They are overloaded with relief packages,” he said.

“When you bring stuff down there, you have to have a place to go.”

Callahan brought such items as coats and shoes along with gift cards on his trip to Washington.

The city of Geneva also is seeking the community’s help in collecting donations for tor-

nado victims in Washington.

The city’s donation drop-off location will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through Dec. 9 at 77 N. First St. in downtown Geneva.

Requested items include toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, pain reliever medications, cold medicine, first-aid kits, reading glasses, plastic cups, plastic plates, plastic utensils, razors, pillows and blankets.

A caravan will deliver items to Washington on Dec. 11. The drop-off location will be closed during the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 28 and 29.

An unforgettable day ories of that day also involve first seeing someone, in stunned silence, and attempting to figure out why. If you found out first, you likely were the one who first shared the news with others.

Kennedy’s assassination has been called the moment when America’s innocence was lost, because in that moment, an unexpected evil did win.

The events of that day will be recounted time and again today as remembrances are held from coast to coast, one of the largest taking place in the city where the shooting occured – Dallas.

What actually happened, who fired all of the shots, why the shots were fired and who was the intended target will continue to be debated. We likely will never have more clarity on any of those issues.

But they continue to stand in the memories of many Americans as a moment that we hope to never see repeated.

Sights, sounds to behold during long journey home Not long ago, I picked up Amtrak’s California Zephyr on its way through Iowa in a town I walked the length of in 10 minutes. Its station, old as it was, fit my mood – hot water radiators kept me warm; antique benches kept me comfy; and a bedroom-sized café kept me caffeinated.

When the train finally wheezed in on its long cross-country run, passengers were rousing themselves from a restless night’s sleep.

As we crawled to cruising speed, I gazed at a practically humanless countryside, much like that that graced the Fox Valley when I first moved there, 35 years ago.

In front of me, two men argued NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard): “If ya don’t want power lines going by yer house, get off the grid. Long

as yer suckin’ it up, take yer turn.”

Next to the tracks, surrounded by vast, empty fields, a man in an orange sweatshirt stood by his car in a graveyard smaller than a football field.

The woman beside me told me her second son grew organic produce in his garden.

“I eat only organic,” she said.

Maybe 70 or older, she was all denim above leather cowboy boots. Behind us, a girl hummed a private melody.

In the distance, a John Deere eight-wheeler pulled long rows of steel fingers scratching the earth.

With her station nearing, the mother across the aisle instructed her daughter, “Help your brother clean up.”

“Help me clean up,” the brother demanded.

“I don’t want to,” insisted Sis, whereupon the brother clubbed her with a half-empty water bottle. She struck back with a colorful plastic microphone.

Leland’s gathering of grain elevators loomed like silver missile silos. A coal train roared by, its cars’ identical ebony mounds at eye level. Outside of town, widow’s walks perched on farmhouses where wives might climb at midnight to search for pickups ferrying their husbands back over black oceans after long hours adrift in downtown taverns.

Reaching Plano, my vision blurred into memories of The Variety Store where my uncle bought me “Beetle Bailey” comic books. We

pass above an angler wading Rock Creek, his cast looping into thick blue-green water.

To the east, a subdivision long ago buried a cornfield’s gravel road where I learned to drive stick shift on my brother’s ’66 Volvo.

And then, with the advent of familiar landmarks, the train tunneled into today and I was home.

St. Charles police boosting holiday traffic enforcement KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is letting motorists know that police will be out in force during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

With the help of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program for fiscal year 2014, also known as the STEP program, police will be looking for drivers under the influence, and those violating speed-limit and seat belt laws from now through Dec. 1, according to a news release. The objective is to reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes

that result in injuries and fatalities.

In Illinois, during the 2012 Thanksgiving Holiday period, nine vehicle occupants died in traffic crashes, and three deaths involved a driver who was drinking.

In St. Charles, officers made four DUI arrests and 41 citations for other traffic violations, states the release.

Seat belt use is the most effective way to reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“The goals of the STEP program are to reduce the number of severe injury

and fatal traffic crashes, to achieve a higher use of safety belts, child safety seats and booster seats, and to achieve a lower incidence of impaired driving involved injuries and fatalities,” states the release. “Research has shown that when lap and shoulder belts are used properly, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.”

Tom Rose, owner of Michael Angelo’s 3rd Street Deli, had until Thursday afternoon to clear out the remaining furnishings and product in the corner store at Third and South streets near the Metra station.

Speaking briefly because of his deadline, Rose on Thursday morning said declining business and higher rent contributed to the decision to close.

He said he had owned the deli for two years, but it was open several years before that.

The deli had been open daily and offered catering.

Its menu included salads, soups, wraps, subs, grilled paninis and smoothies.

Bulldogs’ pass rush overwhelms foes

ockford Boylan football coach John Cacciatore respectfully sized up Batavia’s defensive line as a “violent” bunch, and Bulldogs defensive end Noah Frazier did little to refute that notion in voicing his zeal for sacking quarterbacks.

“I always like what Deacon Jones, a great defensive end, said – he said ‘When you tackle a quarterback, it’s like you sack a city. It’s a siege,’ ” Frazier said.

“It’s like you take the whole offense, put them in a bag and beat them with a baseball bat. Good stuff.”

That statement might not give Boylan quarterback Demry Croft the warm-and-fuzzies ahead of Saturday’s IHSA Class 6A state semifinal in Rockford, but neither has reviewing the Bulldogs’ game film.

Batavia’s defense has amassed 51½ sacks on the season, or more than four a game.

While returning starting defensive linemen James Millette and Ryan Minniti are enjoying their second straight strong seasons, the emergence of juniors Josh Leonhard and Frazier at defensive ends has taken the Bulldogs’ pass rush to an elite level.

Leonhard (11 sacks) and Frazier (10) have both flirted with breaking the program’s single-season sack record as the playoffs have unfolded.

“We’ve had our share of those types of [pass rushers] who have done well but these two kids, it’s like they’re in a battle to get to the quarterback every, single play, and they’re on each side of you,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “What are you going to do? You can’t really key on one guy.”

Leonhard acknowledged he and Frazier have had quite the internal sacks competition.

“Coming into the playoffs, I think Noah was ahead of me, and then I was ahead of Noah, and he was ahead of me – it’s just been a battle the whole way through the playoffs,” Leonhard said.

a defensive end at Wheaton College, said his versatility has made the season all the more enjoyable.

“It’s cool to see what different guys on the field have to do at different times, and how that helps the team,” Frazier said.

The lanky, speed-rushing Leonhard credited Minniti and Millette for often commanding double-teams to help ease his path to the quarterback.

Practicing against a quality Bulldogs offensive line also has been a boost, along with strong coverage throughout the defense that has forced quarterbacks to be more deliberate with their decision-making.

“The secondary, when they’re all out there playing, is as good as we’ve ever had,” Piron said. “We have a very, very good, athletic linebacking corps led by an unbelievable kid in Anthony Thielk (6½ sacks), and Donovan Kilker and Jake Hlava fly all over the field. … That’s a complete defense.

There’s not a lot of holes in our defense.”

Piron said the Bulldogs’ 51½ sacksand-counting might be a program record.

“If not, it’s awfully close,” Piron said. “I will tell you, [defensive coordinator Matt Holm] has this defense playing at a very, very high level.”

With the temperature expected to hover in the 20s Saturday at Titan Stadium, no players will have encountered gameday cold like this all season, so hanging on to the pigskin while absorbing hits could loom large.

Stull, a 6-foot-3 Division-I basketball recruit (Wisconsin-Milwaukee), was Boylan’s quarterback last year and to start this season but transitioned to receiver, immediately becoming the go-to target for his successor at QB, junior Demry Croft.

Moffatt, meanwhile, has four interceptions and 15 pass breakups on the year, and has done excellent work limiting opponents’ premier receivers.

“Very good challenge for [Moffatt],” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “[Stull] catches the ball, he goes and gets it. He’s very fast, athletic and he scores touchdowns. The quarterback’s

6-6 so he can whip it to him, so yeah, the two of them are playing nice pitch and catch out there.”

X-factor Special teams.

Kicking point-afters has been spotty for Batavia at times, although the Bulldogs are well equipped to make up for that by clicking on two-point conversions if need be. Punter Tucker Knox continues to be a great asset for the Bulldogs.

Rockford Boylan coach John Cacciatore said he thinks his Titans possess “a very solid” kicking game.

Best-case scenario for the Bulldogs Batavia puts the game away before the final minutes.

Although the Bulldogs made a key defensive stand when they needed to in last week’s 19-14 win against Lake Forest, Rockford Boylan has cornered the market on clutch wins this season, dating back to Boylan overcoming a 21-point deficit in Week 2 to rally past Rockton Hononegah, 35-34.

The Titans also have overcome halftime deficits each of the past two weeks in tight playoff wins over Cary-Grove (17-10) and Prairie Ridge (21-17).

“They believe they’re going to win,” Piron said of the Titans.

“Clearly as a program, they’ve done that for a long, long time now. Because they believe they’re going to win, they win, and they do it all the time.

You’ve got to continue to press, you’ve got to be aggressive, you’ve got to go after them because they have no problem at all thinking ‘Hey, it doesn’t matter, we’ll finish them off in the end.’ ” Quarterback Micah Coffey has piled up 2,043 passing yards and running back Anthony Scaccia has 1,541 rushing yards for a Bulldogs team that Piron said is playing to extend its time together more than for a shot at state championship glory next week at Huskie Stadium.

“The guys don’t break and say, ‘Win state!’ or anything like that, it’s one more week, let’s have one more week together,” Piron said. “It’s pretty special when you figure that out at a

young age how precious this time is together. So it’s cool, very cool.”

Best-case scenario for the Titans Boylan considers itself a runfirst program, but you wouldn’t know it based on the past couple of weeks.

The Titans have had to be more aggressive than they’d like throwing the ball in difficult conditions because of sluggish starts. Winning is the bottom line, but Cacciatore said the Titans would prefer to control clock in the second half.

“We’ve run the ball fairly well between [running back Nick Pumilia] and [Croft], but the defenses the last few weeks have chosen to take that away, so we’ve had to capitalize by throwing the ball,” Cacciatore said. “That’s never the plan going in.”

Cacciatore is especially leery of being put in too many haveto-pass spots against Moffatt and the Bulldogs’ secondary.

“The secondary looks outstanding,” Cacciatore said of Batavia. “Probably the tallest

and fastest secondary we’ve seen, and the linebackers don’t look like some of the linebackers around here. They look like they’re all built to run and run fast, and beat you up in space.”

Batavia’s vaunted offense finally cooled off a bit against Lake Forest, but Cacciatore knows tremendous efforts will be required from defensive leaders such as middle linebacker Zack Mathews (6-1, 230), brothers Graham and Quinn Smolirski in the secondary and defensive lineman Ian Riggs – all seniors – to keep the Bulldogs from a scoring pace that Boylan can’t match.

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Batavia 27, Boylan 20 Batavia has faced a better schedule, wields more playmakers on both sides of the ball and will start the more seasoned quarterback.

Still, earning a spot in the Class 6A state title game won’t be easy – nor should it be – in a road game against a proud and athletic team that consistently has found ways to dig itself out of trouble.

Despite Goress’ and other graduation losses, Jahns is eager to see how a new crop of seniors – namely Justin Diddell (285), Dane Goodenough (132/138) and Zack Russell (152/160) – handle increased leadership expectations.

“I don’t want to say [it’s] a rebuilding year,” Jahns said.

“We’ll have a lot of young wrestlers in the lineup, a few upperclassmen and at least I think we’ll be able to fill most, if not all of the weights.”

That’s a scenario Jahns thought he was leaving a protege. Now that he’s back, Jahns might as well make the most of it.

Thomas O’Brien Geneva, Sr., 138 Overcame offseason injury and is ready to go. A state alternate at 132 in 2012-13, he provided a spark after transferring from St. Charles North.

Jordan Soto Geneva, Fr., 132/138 The nephew of Ray Soto – the lone wrestling state champion in Geneva history – has shown well in the mat room so far. He was an Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state place-winner in eighth grade.

Unless Kaneland moves campuses or the paint suddenly thins, Monty Jahns will remain linked to the Knights’ wrestling room.

A former Kaneland athlete from the Class of 1981, Jahns earned a place on the 20-win wall, and ostensibly surveyed that space each day during a lengthy run as an assistant and head coach.

Citing an increased workload at his day job at Nicor Gas, Jahns stepped down in March after leading the program for five seasons. Earlier this month, he returned for one final winter out of a sense of duty.

Former Knight Jeremy Kenny, who had been recommended and approved by District 302 to replace Jahns in the offseason, elected to take

Jim Schmidt confirmed Kenny is working as a teacher in District 88 while serving as an assistant coach for football, wrestling and track. An attempt to reach Kenny was unsuccessful.

Jahns keeps in touch with Kenny, who was a full-time Kaneland security guard last school year, and acknowledged he made the move in the interest of his career.

Jahns and Kenny both were known to be active in the mat room. The program displayed similar mobility last season, as Kaneland produced multiple state place-winners for the first time since 1993. Recent graduate Dan Goress, the Class 2A state champion at 145 pounds, headlined the list.

Glasgow in middle of Wolverines’ mix On any given Sunday, an analyst on an NFL broadcast will discuss injuries a team has had on its offensive line and how players have found themselves playing different positions than they’re accustomed to, and how difficult the transition can be.

Ask Michigan sophomore Graham Glasgow about making the transition from starting guard to starting center in the middle of this season and mostly what you get is a shrug.

“I just want to play whatever helps the team,” the Marmion graduate says, noting that he played a lot of

“Way back, the arena used to have an arcade in it that was pretty huge.

We used to run around in there,” Hawkeyes club president and right wing Mike Purcell said. “Other than that, it’s pretty much always the same when you walk in, which is nice.”

Bock, Purcell and Iowa forward Derek Quinn are St. Charles North products who grew up in close proximity to one another.

Bock guessed one friend’s home was a 30-second walk.

The other commute took a minute.

Naturally, there was plenty of street hockey in their after-school itineraries. The games offered a welcome break from the sport’s

usual structure.

“We all just kind of played offense and skated around,” Purcell said.

Batavia also will be well-represented this weekend, with NIU forward Nick Gorczyca opposing Iowa counterparts and fellow former Bulldogs Alex Martin and Nathan Podraza.

Tickets cost $6 per game for adults, $4 for high school and college students and $2 for children age 3 to 13. NIU students are admitted free.

The Huskies have played home games at the Rockford Ice House, Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge and Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee since the mid-1990s.

The program’s return to Fox Valley last season seemed to pay early dividends.

“It was nuts a couple times last year,” Bock said.

“We get a pretty good fan base coming out, which is fun. A lot of parents, sure, but a lot of friends and sometimes we’ll get students out

there, too.”

Or, in this case, old friends.

Holiday road: Purcell summarizes his club president duties as “a lot of organizing,” tasks that include but are not limited to securing rink time, referees and overseeing teammates’ absence forms if the Hawkeyes play a Friday road game.

This weekend figures to be more laid back than others.

With 14 of Iowa’s 22 players hailing from Chicago suburbs and Thanksgiving break looming, Purcell did not have to charter a bus or book a hotel. Those players not from Illinois will stay with teammates, Purcell said.

BATAVIA – Batavia senior outside hitter Heather Meyer has verbally committed to play her college volleyball at NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The 6-foot Meyer led Batavia with 335 kills this season and was second with 310 digs. Both figures are the fourth-highest single-season totals in program history.

The Bulldogs’ Laura Lyons recently committed to Waubonsee Community College.

Eagles win at home AURORA – The Aurora Christian girls basketball team defeated Timothy Christian, 53-43, in ACS/IMSA tournament play Thursday night.

The Eagles’ Alyssa Andersen led all scorers with 17 points. Charissa Robinson added nine, while Natasha Brown chipped in six points and 12 rebounds.

Aurora Christian edged Indian Creek, 45-41, in its tournament opener Tuesday.

Glasgow gets to see younger brother, Ryan, on Michigan’s defensive line • ON CAMPUS Continued from page 18 by a very familiar face to Glasgow, true freshman Kyle Bosch of St. Charles, a St. Francis graduate.

“It’s kind of cool,” Glasgow says, adding that he never went head-to-head against Bosch in high school. “He gets the job done. That’s fine with me.”

Glasgow gets to see an even more familiar face every day – his younger brother, Ryan, a defensive lineman.

“It’s great,” Glasgow says.

“It’s like it was at Marmion in a way. I go up against him all the time in practice.”

Ryan, a redshirt freshman, has appeared in eight games this season for the Wolverines.

“When I see Ryan out there on defense doing his thing, it’s great,” Glasgow says. “I like it a lot.”

Glasgow downplays the role he’s played in helping Ryan achieve gridiron success.

“I think I was able to help him adjust to college in every way except the ability to play his position,” Glasgow says. “I can’t tell him how he’s doing.

That’s up to the coaches.”

Glasgow says he does encourage his brother to keep a positive attitude, something the elder Glasgow had to work on a lot as a walk-on freshman, when his primary duty was to mimic the offensive linemen Michigan’s first-team defense would be going up against each week.

Graham “You’re goGlasgow ing to get beat up on the scout team,” he says. “It’s all about just getting better. That’s what happens the first year.”

Last year, Glasgow saw action in five games for the Wolverines.

“When you get an opportunity like that, you’ve still got to go out there and play your hardest,” he says, noting the importance of showing coaches and teammates alike that he was improving.

Glasgow says he spent the off-season working on getting stronger and preparing for spring practice.

“Having a good spring ball was instrumental” to his current success, he says. “As a walk-on, I would say you

literally have to play as good as you can on every play. You just have to be consistently good.”

His spring play was strong enough that he began to get media attention in Michigan as a possible candidate for a starting position this fall, despite the fact more heralded scholarship athletes were available to fill the O-line spots.

When the season finally arrived, Glasgow’s hard work was rewarded with both a spot in the starting lineup and a scholarship.

The season started well for Glasgow and the Wolverines. They won their first five games, including a 41-30 victory over then 14th-ranked Notre Dame. Michigan averaged 39 points a game on offense in those contests. Since then, it has lost three of five.

“We’ve definitely not completed our primary goal, which was to win the Big Ten championship, which was upsetting at first,” Glasgow says.

“We still have another goal of winning 10 games. … Not a lot of people believe in us, but we believe in us, and that’s all that matters.”

The Wolverines (7-3, 3-3 Big Ten Legends) kept that goal of

winning 10 games alive with a triple-overtime victory Saturday at Northwestern.

“When we had that field goal at the end of regulation, I had a very good feeling about overtime,” Glasgow says. “We moved the ball at times during the game, we just couldn’t put it together completely, but in overtime, we put it together.”

On the play before the field goal that sent the game into overtime, Glasgow completely stoned Northwestern defensive lineman Tyler Scott at the line of scrimmage, giving quarterback Devin Gardner ample time to make a crucial pass completion.

On Gardner’s game-winning five-yard TD run in the third overtime, Glasgow held

his block on Will Hampton until after Gardner crossed the goal line.

After a tense game like that, players want to kick back and relax a little bit.

They don’t get much free time during the season. When they do, Glasgow and his brother and some of their teammates enjoy a classic video game.

“We’ll play Super Smash Bros. for N64,” he says. “We can play that for hours at a time. … It’s amazing. The console doesn’t break. It’s been like 20 years.”

Venza wagon an ideal vehicle for typical family Whether a four-cylinder model or a V6, Toyota’s fourdoor, five-seat Venza wagon is an ideal vehicle for the typical family (mom, dad, one or two or three children).

Roominess in two seating rows, exceptional cargo space plus a plethora of safety features are hallmarks of this vehicle that entered the market in 2008 as a 2009 model.

Venza is the wagon version of Toyota’s Camry sedan, but it is designed off the entry-luxury Avalon platform. One gets the best of Camry and Avalon in the Venza, including a 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 engine mated to a shiftable six-speed automatic transmission. In the Avalon that engine is standard. In the Camry and Venza, it is an upgrade found in the XLE models. The Venza that was tested recently was an all-wheel-drive XLE with the 268-horsepower engine.

Six-speed shiftable automatic transmissions are standard in Camrys, Avalons and Venzas.

Smaller 2.5- and 2.7-liter, 181-horsepower inline four-cylinders are available in both Camry and Venza, but the 3.5-liter is the one that can tow a 3,500-pound trailer or accelerate without the trailer while carrying 4,045 pounds of body weight from 0 to 60 miles per hour in close to seven seconds.

For 2014, Venza models are LE, XLE and Limited and they are priced from $27,950, $31,810 and $38,120 respectively. The LE has 19-inch alloy wheels and the XLE and Limited 20-inchers to support the P245 all-season tires, otherwise they share the same exterior design. Each model offers front- or all-wheel-drive. The 20-inch wheels are controlled by disc brakes measuring 12.8 inches in front and 11.7 inches in the rear. The brakes should get the Venza from 60 mph back to 0 mph in 130 feet on dry pavement.

The 2014 Venza is a Toyota midsize wagon offering a 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 engine mated to a shiftable six-speed automatic transmission.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper With a suggested retail price of $35,080 plus an $860 delivery charge, the tested XLE’s price was $35,940. If the buyer opts for a $1,850 premium package, the XLE essentially turns into a Limited. Among the niceties that package adds are a power tilt and slide moonroof, upgrade JBL sound system with 13 instead of six

speakers and a navigation system.

The 24-valve, dual overhead cam V6 engine accelerates instantly and quietly. During the test week, it averaged 22 miles per gallon of regular unleaded fuel in combined suburban and highway driving.

The Environmental Agency rates this Venza at 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. Most of the driving during test week was on a highway.

Loading this wagon with home improvement materials

and equipment was easy as it has a ground clearance of eight inches with a low liftover at the rear.

The liftgate opens and closes by power. It rises well out of the way of getting objects in and out of the carpeted and lighted floor, which expands to 70.2 cubic feet when the rear split seats are folded flat.

With the rear seats upright, storage is 36.2 cubic feet. A removable tonneau cover is standard.

Like the Avalon, leg room in the rear seat of this mid-

sized wagon is exceptional and is equivalent or better than that of full-size sedans or wagons. Officially, it is 39.1 inches.

Venza offers an impeccable if not perfect ride with a suspension system of struts, coil springs and stabilizer bars front and rear.

Front bucket seats will accommodate large frames and they adjust accordingly.

• VENZA Continued from page 23 As expected in a vehicle based on an Avalon sedan, the Venza included four express up and down power windows (two express windows are common in this market), power driver’s seat, power and heated exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, power door locks, a backup camera showing what’s behind this wagon on a 3.5-inch color screen, and dual lighted cupholders on the center console.

A six-speaker sound system served AM-FM radio, compact disc (storage for six) and MP3 players and an auxiliary audio input jack.

Other amenities included keyless remote entry, smart start, cruise control, air conditioning, zoned climate controls, rear vents, privacy glass, map lights in front and reading lights in the rear, multiple lidded bins and beverage holders, grab handles, coat hangers, variable front wipers, rear intermittent wiper and defroster.

A useful touch is a hooded information window centered at the top of the dashboard. It includes cabin temperature set-

tings for driver and passenger, fan speed, outside temperature, fuel usage and time of day.

Depending on how one counts, there are nine airbags.

The nine include a knee airbag for the driver and overhead curtains for protection on both sides, front and rear. The other four airbags are in front and the front sides for driver and his or her front-seat companion.

Stability and traction controls are standard, as are a four-wheel antilock braking system, brake assist, headrests (active for those seated in front) to complement the five threepoint seatbelts, child safety rear door locks, child seat tethers and anchors, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

From far away or close up, the Venza strikes a fashionable pose highlighted by a tapering profile, big inset front fog lights, dual exhaust tips, a modest rear spoiler, a honeycomb air dam beneath a racy chrome grille, creased fender and taillight assemblies, and wraparound headlamps.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24hour roadside assistance and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’– this star shines brightest

That’s Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), publicity maven and doyenne of sadistic mayhem in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” as she prepares the series’ heroine, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), to meet her adoring public. Fans will remember that Katniss and her fellow “tribute” Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) have just won the 74th Hunger Games, the gruesome Darwinian ritual designed to pacify and terrorize the citizens of Panem, a grim futuristic society that’s one part ancient Rome, one part fascist Germany and one part fin de siecle France.

As “Catching Fire” gets underway, Katniss and Peeta are touring the benighted districts of Panem, where a restive populace is spoiling for revolution. Urged on by the evil President Snow (Donald Sutherland), they ratchet up their ginned-up romance, distracting the starving, impoverished masses with hints of a wedding and, just maybe, an impending baby bump.

Despite their obvious historical allusions, the “Hunger Games” films – based on the cult hit series of novels

by Suzanne Collins – are very much about America today, from the consumerist decadence and obscene disparities in wealth enjoyed

by Panem’s smug one percent to a reality-show culture of competition that’s been taken to murderous extremes.

Taking its cue as much from “Project Runway” as from “Survivor,” Collins’ universe is one in which

Jennifer Lawrence is a force of nature in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” couture dresses carry as much meaning and empowerment as weaponry: In this installment, it’s a full hour and a half before Katniss embarks on a new set of games, providing lots of time for her to simmer angrily at the injustices she witnesses. While she reluctantly goes along with Snow’s bread-and-circuses ruse, she acts as model and muse for her unfailingly on-trend stylist, Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), who once again can be counted on to come up with sartorial showstoppers that may or may not burst into flames at the wearer’s command.

Cue Alicia Keys! Whereas for some of us the confounding cosmology of kids killing other kids for pleasure and political expedience reeks of cynicism and downright perversion, fans of “The Hunger Games” should find “Catching Fire” a superlative advancement of the franchise.

Director Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”), taking the reins from Gary Ross, smoothly steers the characters through their latest course of depredations and abuse, allowing plenty of moments simply to

sit back and groove on the eye candy.

Filming in icy blues and greys, Lawrence evokes the despair of Katniss’ world back home, where jack-booted thugs (a.k.a. “Peacekeepers”) routinely whip, torture and shoot dissenters. Keenly aware of the adolescent audience, Lawrence always manages to look away before the violence becomes too icky.

Once Katniss, Peeta and their fellow competitors reach the giant terrarium that serves as their latest “arena,” they face a series of desert island risks that include toxic fog, squalls of blood, explosive lightning and a tribe of the most terrifying monkeys since “The Wizard of Oz.” At nearly two and a half hours, “Catching Fire” may well strike non-“Games” players as insufferably sluggish, especially during the interminable run-up to the games, when host Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci, doing his best Martin Short) introduces the new cast of players. Newcomers include the spiky Johanna (Jena Malone), the bespectacled Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) and Finnick (Sam Claflin),

each of whom will figure prominently in Katniss’ new challenge. Once again, Katniss and Peeta are coached by the lovably goofy duo of Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) and Effie, whose outfits still call to mind Vivienne Westwood run gleefully amok. And a new, more mysterious figure has also appeared on the scene: Plutarch Heavensbee, a malevolent game designer played with rumpled seriousness by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

As has already been proved in the Marvel “Avengers” series, having such genuinely accomplished actors channel such outlandish fantasy makes all the difference.

Everyone hits their marks with gusto and believability in “Catching Fire.”

But the engine of the entire operation is Lawrence, who in Katniss has found a character that chimes perfectly with her own persona as an earthy, blunt-speaking ingenue suddenly thrust into a world of celebrity and media-fueled idol worship.

Much like the young heroine she doesn’t play as much as inhabit from the inside out, Lawrence is a force of nature.

Even viewers who watch “Catching Fire” unwillingly won’t be able to resist her gravitational pull, which in her case isn’t a function of conventional movie-star looks, but character and command presence.

• “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” received two-and-ahalf stars out of four. The film is rated PG-13 and contains intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation and profanity. It runs 146 minutes.

Stop casual drinking from becoming problem drinking Dear Doctor K: I’m a 36-year-old woman. Lately I’ve been drinking more than I used to. How can I rein in my drinking before it becomes a problem?

Dear Reader: Even for people who initially have a healthy relationship with alcohol, things can change over time. So how can you prevent casual drinking from crossing into problem drinking?

First, some basics. A standard drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor. According to the National Institutes of Health, healthy women should drink no more than three drinks a day and no more than seven drinks a week (an average of one drink per day).

Even if you usually stay within this limit, alcohol could be problematic. For example, how often do you drink until you feel tipsy or drunk? Do you crave alcohol?

How often do you drink more than you should?

Based on these questions, you may decide it’s time to cut back or stop drinking altogether. Whatever you decide, an informative new e-book by my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Debi A. LaPlante, “Responsible Drinking for Women,” can help you make the change. This e-book will help identify issues that could make it

You’ll start by setting goals.

Do you want to drink less or eliminate alcohol completely? Do you want to start now or in six months? Do you plan to cut back gradually or stop cold turkey?

You’ll also need to acknowledge why you drink. For example, many women drink to help cope with stress or conflict. You may have learned that, in the short run, alcohol alleviates uncomfortable feelings and strong emotions.

But you can retrain yourself to cope in healthy ways, making it less likely that you’ll turn to alcohol in times of stress.

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of overall wellness to help prevent relapse and propel long-term change. Being physically out of shape, for example, is not just a cosmetic issue – you also just don’t feel that well. You don’t have your usual energy; your mind doesn’t seem as sharp.

You get sleepy earlier in the day.

You’re just not yourself.

When you’re in that kind of state, finding the inner discipline to deal with any problem is a challenge. That’s why improving your diet, maintaining healthy sleep habits and exercising regularly can help you achieve and maintain your drinking goals.

I’ve had several patients who never had a problem with alcohol until a very stressful event, such as the loss of a job or the end of a relationship. Almost always their friends tended to drink pretty heavily – more heavily than they.

But because of the stress, they started to follow their friends when that second or third drink was ordered. On occasion, people who had never had a drinking problem started drinking alone, and in excess. But usually they were just doing what their friends were doing – and getting no negative feedback.

I hope this advice, and the more detailed information in Dr. LaPlante’s e-book, will help you decide if you have a problem and, if so, to nip it in the bud.

Dr. Wallace: I am a retired teacher, and I enjoy reading your column so I can keep up with today’s teens. I agree with much that you say, but I strongly disagree with your “teachers shouldn’t paddle” philosophy.

When I was teaching, a rap on the knuckles by a teacher or a paddle on the rump administered by the principal did wonders to keep unruly students on the straight and narrow.

I believe in strong discipline, and corporal punishment is a tool of strong discipline. Did I change your mind? – Teacher, Peoria Dear Teacher: No. I, too, believe in strong discipline, but I still don’t believe teachers or administrators should administer spankings or knuckle rappings to unruly students. There are far more effective ways to maintain discipline and too many potential negative side effects to corporal punishment.

Educators should educate; parents should discipline.

Dr. Wallace: I’ve been going out with this guy for over two weeks. I like him a lot and I think he likes me, too, but it’s hard to tell. I can’t get him to say much to me.

I don’t expect him to be a chatterbox, but I also don’t want him to be mute. I was advised to ask him questions to get him into a conversation, so I tried this, but all I get are his yes or no answers.

How can I get him to be more outgoing? – Becky, Tacoma, Wash.

Dear Becky: Asking shy people questions usually gets them to open up, but you need to be patient and persistent.

For starters, don’t ask questions that can be answered with a yes or no. Instead of asking “Do you like pizza?” say, “Piz-

What foods do you enjoy most?” The answers might be short and to the point, but at least they won’t be yes or no.

My friend’s parents are upset with us because they think we will get addicted to the lottery and wind up as destitute gamblers. All we’re doing is buying a few lottery tickets weekly. It’s not as if we were going to Las Vegas and losing the house, the car and the family business on slot machines. Give me your honest opinion. – Mike, Rockford Dear Mike: I’m well aware that millions of Americans play various forms of the lottery and some of the money earned by the states goes to benefit its citizens, but the bottom line is that buying a lottery ticket is a form of gambling and gambling can become addictive.

I’m not saying that you will become addicted to gambling, but according to Edward Looney, executive director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling, lottery gamblers make up 47 percent of all gambling hotline calls.

Dear Abby: My 23-year-old daughter is out of control and has been since she was 16. She has a 2-year-old daughter, but she lives her life on the edge. She spends her days on the Internet meeting strange men and going out with them in private places. On the weekends, she drops her daughter here and takes off.

She has a history of drug and alcohol abuse and prostitution, but swears she only drinks alcohol now. I get so worried and upset I find myself yelling at her and trying to prevent her from leaving with these strange men. She thinks I’m trying to control her life when I’m actually trying to save her.

New Zealand Bridge is published six times a year in a small-page format. It contains the usual mix of tournament reports, quizzes, hands to bid with your partner and compare your final contracts with top players, and a bidding panel with experts from around the globe who answer six problems.

Most magazines like to concentrate on accurate bidding and play, but do include some errors – as in this example from New Zealand Bridge.

How would you analyze the bidding? West’s opening bid showed 9-12 points. East’s twoclub response was Stayman. And South’s two-no-trump intervention indicated at least 5-5 in the minors.

Against three no-trump, West led a low heart. How many tricks do you think declarer took?

Down Under they like weak no-trumps. East sensibly used Stayman to play in two of a major. South’s overcall was crazy – his hand was far too weak.

When an opponent opens with a weak no-trump, you must bid constructively, not destructively, because your side could have the high-card values for game.

North’s raise to three no-trump was iffy with no spade stopper, but since he thought his partner had at least opening values, it was reasonable.

West led the heart two. East won with her queen and shifted to a low spade. West won and returned the heart jack. This allowed the defenders to take nine major-suit tricks. South discarded badly, keeping only two clubs in each hand. So, when East now led a club, West took the last four tricks in the suit for down nine!
