LOCAL BRIEFS Sugar Grove library plans upcoming activities

SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Public Library, 125 S. Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove, has multiple activities planned for the week of Thanksgiving.

Children in grades K-5 can participate in a Jedi Academy from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Legislative forum set for Dec. 14 in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES – Federal and state issues concerning aging and disability are expected to be discussed at a legislative forum set for Dec. 14 at the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., St. Charles.

The forum is planned to begin at 9 a.m. after registration and refreshments at 8:30 a.m. The theme, “Cuts Harm Communities,” will focus on how fully funded state programs, such as the Community Care Program, the Home Services Program and Adult Protective Services, save taxpayer dollars and improve the quality of life for seniors and those with disabilities. The event will include a continental breakfast and light luncheon, so reservations are requested.

Congressional App Challenge entries open

Congressman Bill Foster has announced that entries are open for the Congressional App Challenge for high school students.

The Congressional App Challenge is a yearly competition held by the House of Representatives to encourage high school students to show interest in the STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering and math. The competition is open to all high school students who reside or attend high school in the 11th Congressional District.

As part of the challenge, students will design and build an original app, as well as submit a 1- to 4-minute video explaining the app’s functions.

Changing of the guard, white-tailed deer style other bucks who would like to challenge him, as well as to does seeking mates – is easy to find, if you’d like to go take a look. It’s on the south side of the paved path that runs west from Third Avenue, about two-thirds of the way down toward the crushed lime of the Fox River Bike Trail.

So there you have it.

While there are no solemn-faced soldiers, colorful flags or marching bands, the evidence is undeniable. The old bucks have gone away, and a changing of the guard, white-tailed deer style, is underway. Don’t miss your chance to see it.

Maybe you’ve visited Arlington National Cemetery. I remember a family vacation, 1970-something, where we watched the guards changing at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The stirring tribute to these unidentified heroes made an impression on my high school brain that exists to this day.

Or maybe you’ve been lucky enough to see one of the world’s most famous changing of the guard – the ceremony that occurs every other day (and daily during summer months) at London’s Buckingham Palace. The new guard exchanges duty with the old, accompanied by a military band and ritualized movements that date back almost 400 years.

Then we have the changing of the guard that’s taking place right now, right here in St. Charles. It brings no pageantry, no pomp, but it definitely is attached to a significant amount of circumstance.

Let me explain.

Some of you may remember that, just over a year ago, two robust whitetail bucks battled over territory in a St. Charles woodland. During their epic duel, their antlers became inextricably interlocked; in the ensuing hours, one and then the other passed away.

In an effort to preserve the memory of these magnificent animals, the St. Charles Park District naturalist staff harvested the bucks’ heads and buried them over the winter. We dug them up in spring and transferred them to a large vat of water, which was changed regularly during the summer.

This rub also indicates a changing of the guard among deer in St. Charles. ory Knolls to begin the final touch-up work. (For those of you wondering, we hope to have the skulls, along with interpretive signs detailing the bucks’ legacy, on display in early 2016. Watch this space for future updates.)

As the remains were undergoing their transformation, so, too, was the whitetailed deer hierarchy in the nearby natural areas. Up until last November, these two big boys ruled the woods in and around St. Charles.

With a combined weight of more than 600 pounds, with racks that numbered 14 points and 17 points each, they were without a doubt the Old Guard among our local Odocoileus virginianus.

Their absence created a void. But not for long.

A few weeks ago, I was at Delnor Woods Park around dusk, and noticed some activity by a mulberry tree with low-hanging branches.

In the dim light, I at first, wasn’t sure what I was looking at. But as the jiggling of twigs continued, and I quietly crept closer, I realized the movement was being caused by a young whitetail buck

browsing on the then stillgreen leaves.

His profile was slim, indicating he probably was a first-year buck. His antlers also were indicative of a novice. I couldn’t quite see how many points he’d attained, but I would guess somewhere in the range of four to six.

I tried to get a picture of this new arrival, but succeeded in capturing only some nifty eyeshine (a reflection of my camera flash) amid the gathering darkness.

In subsequent trips to Delnor Woods, I’ve caught glimpses of the Little Guy, often in the area that in years past had been frequented by the departed 14-point buck.

Then last week, I went to Norris Woods, also in St. Charles, on some nature-related business. While I didn’t see any deer on that particular day, I did spot some obvious evidence of their presence: bark hanging in tatters from the trunk of a small tree. A buck had rubbed – vigorously, I might add – his forehead and antlers there, leaving his scent and an unmistakable sign

behind.

COVER STORY ‘DANCING IS SO FUN’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Dance coordinator Katie Behrens has one boy for the Geneva Park District Sunset Dancers’ production of “The Nutcracker” this year.

John Schmidt, 10, of Geneva, will perform as the Snow King during the Snowflake Dance.

He will be the only boy onstage with 27 girls from age 7 to 13, Behrens said.

“He has been with me probably five years,” Behrens said.

“He is in our intermediate advanced ballet class. He does what boys do – he does jumping, and he does a little partnering.”

There’s just not enough boys for all the male roles in the classic Christmas ballet – and not just for the park district’s production, but for others, as well, local dance instructors said.

“I manipulated the story a little more this year,” Behrens said. “Getting 10- and 12-yearold little girls to play an old uncle is beyond difficult.”

So, where are all the boys in ballet? Probably steering clear because it’s perceived – wrongly – as a girl thing, instructors and parents said.

“I believe there is still a stigma that only girls can dance ballet and only girls should take dance classes,” Behrens said. “I think there is this perception that ballet dancers are not manly. Real boys do ballet.”

••• Ashlie Andersen, director of State Street Dance Studio in Geneva, has seven boys out of 100 cast members in “The Fox Valley Nutcracker” production – and she’s thrilled to have so many.

“It’s not considered manly,” Andersen said, noting that’s not what she believes about boys in dance. “It’s kind of how our society views it as well. It’s a stigma.”

Andersen said older male ballet dancers have to jump, but they also have to be strong enough to lift the female dancers.

“Dancing as males requires a lot of strength, skill and agility. … Male dancers have to

build the strength to lift someone,” Andersen said. “Their jobs are to make it look effortless and to make it look beautiful on stage for audiences to enjoy.”

Athan Laden, 6, of Wayne, is one of the seven males in State Street’s production, and this will be his third year performing in “The Nutcracker.” This year, he will be a little boy and a mouse soldier.

“When you ask Athan why there’s not more boys in dance, he says, ‘Boys just don’t get it; they do not realize it’s [a] sport.

Dancing is so fun. You get to perform and have fun with your friends,’ ” said his mother, Tara Avram.

Her son has been in ballet for three years, and tap and jazz for two years each, Avram said.

“He is not fazed by being the youngest or by being the only boy,” Avram said. “He is dancing with girls who are three to eight inches taller than him, and he loves it. He follows the beat of him own drum.”

John Schmidt is unfazed about being the only boy in the Geneva Park District production of “The Nutcracker,” as his father, Brian Schmidt explained.

“He’s been interested in music ever since he was a little bitty kid,” Brian Schmidt said.

“We looked for musical things he might be interested in, so ballet is a natural extension of

that.”

Another benefit of ballet is learning to follow a complex set of instructions in an activity without winners or losers, Brian Schmidt said.

“The outcome is a performance,” he said. “The quality is determined by effort. You can’t ‘lose’ your recital.”

A fifth-grader at Williamsburg Elementary School in Geneva, John Schmidt has other interests, his father said – wrestling, competitive cross-country bike riding, playing drums and chess.

••• Jack Gerling, 16, of Sugar Grove, has studied at Salt Creek Ballet in Westmont for six years, commuting 45 minutes a day, six days a week, for classes and rehearsals that can last anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 ½ hours.

This month, he will perform in a major role as the Nutcracker Prince, dancing with Princess Clara, in “The Nutcracker.”

“When you’re 4 … [you’re] not doing a whole lot that’s different from the girls, learning basic things. As you get older, you start learning things that are more masculine and more important as a male dancer,” Gerling said. “Guys have a very important role in ballet.”

Gerling also works out – as do many other male dancers – to develop the upper body

strength needed to lift the girls and the strong legs to jump and lift, Gerling said.

“I think one of the main barriers to boys in dance is the current perception of men who dance – by those not familiar with the dance world – as grown men in tights. If they could see what these men can really do, the amazing impressive capabilities that they have, they might change their mind of just how impressive male dancers can be.”

His father, Keith Gerling, said in the world outside of the U.S., there are plenty of boys in dance.

“It’s a societal thing,” Keith Gerling said. “This culture thinks it’s too foo foo, I guess.”

Keith Gerling said the most important job for the male dancer is to inspire confidence in the ballerina so she can dance on pointe, jump and turn and know her partner has her back.

“Most of the eyes will be on this lovely woman in this beautiful tutu, and he has got to be her rock,” Keith Gerling said.

“He has to be an oak tree. When I give my son a hug, he’s like a tree; he’s solid. What they teach in ballet is core strength.”

“I have had wonderful luck with the boys,” Fowler said.

“First, you have the girls who are friends with the high school boys and they want to be part of something. We had about 50 boys do ‘West Side Story.’ ”

Her productions are dance only, without singing or dialog, she said.

“It gives girls a chance to do partnering work, so in a company of 25 girls, I get 25 boys to go with them, so 100 percent of the girls get the experience of partnering,” Fowler said. “What people ask is, ‘How many years have these guys been dancing?’

I say, ‘Three months.’ ”

CH police seeks participants for Citizens Police Academy

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills Police Department is seeking participants for its first-ever Citizens Police Academy, which is set to begin in January.

The academy is a way for the police department to get input from the community and to show residents “the whys and the hows of what we do,” Chief Dan Hoffman said.

The free training is open to adults, who will be vetted

by a background check, he said, noting village residency is not required.

Seven people have signed up so far, Hoffman said Friday morning. He said he is seeking at least 15 participants because of larger group facilitates more conversation and discussion, thus leading to a better experience.

In a news release, Hoffman indicated it is the department’s hope the graduates will become partners with the police in identifying problems and solutions to the issues affecting the commu-

Born: Nov. 26, 1923; in Chicago, IL Died: Nov. 18, 2015; in Geneva, IL J. Robert “Bob” Murphy passed away peacefully at home in Geneva on Nov. 18, 2015, just days before his 92nd birthday. He was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Chicago, to William and Louise (Florence) Murphy.

Bob graduated from West Aurora High School in 1941 and received a scholarship to Harvard University.

While at Harvard, in 1943, Bob was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Army Air Force for three years before returning to Harvard to resume his education, entering and attending Harvard Law School from 1946 to 1948.

Bob then returned to Aurora, where he opened his law practice in 1949.

Bob married Teresa (Chambers) on Sept. 4, 1950, and together, they had six children.

Bob served local families and family businesses in the general practice of law including concentration in areas of construction law, estate planning, and civil litigation for more than 60 years. Bob co-founded and practiced with the law firm of Murphy, Griffin & Dixon, in the 1960s and 1970s. From 1981 until 2004, Bob practiced with his son, Jim, as partners in Murphy & Murphy PC.

As a young lawyer interested in politics, Bob served as local campaign chair for John F. Kennedy during the 1960 presidential election campaign. Bob was appointed and served as City of Aurora corporation counsel during the tenure of Mayor Jack Hill.

During the last 30 years, Bob and Terry spent several weeks each year in Aix-en-Provence, France, where they enjoyed the people, artisans, culture, art, language, and lifestyle of southern France.

Bob enjoyed classical music, and daily practiced playing Bach on the piano.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Terry; his children, Jim (Mary) of Aurora, Ann Borel (the late Jean-Louis Borel), of Paris, France, Margaret (Bill) Fehrenbacher, of Oswego, IL; Nora, of San Francisco, and Ian of Chicago; his grandchildren, Katy Murphy,

James Murphy, Sara Fehrenbacher, Emily (Zachary) Mannix, Floriane Borel and Christopher Barnett; his brother, William C. Murphy, of Aurora; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his son, Brendan, in 2014.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, from 3:00 P.M. until the service hour of 7:00 P.M. at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Place, Aurora, IL. Burial will be private.

John W. Jarvis, age 97, of Geneva, passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at Delnor Hospital.

After graduating from Geneva High School, he went to two art schools in Chicago. He was a cartoonist whose work appeared in magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Parade and others.

During WWII, he was a soldier in the Army Air Force, later he worked for the Western Newspaper Union in Frankfort, KY. where he met his wife, Thelma Lee. After returning to Geneva he was employed at the Aurora Beacon News where he retired as Chief Artist thirty years later.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma (Lee) Jarvis; his parents, Frank and Stella; and a brother, Francis Jarvis.

He is survived by a daughter, Debbie Jarvis (Tom) Meitl of Geneva; two sons, David (Karen) Jarvis of Bolingbrook, and Frank Jarvis of Geneva. Three grandchildren, Matthew (Rachel) Meitl, Timothy and Alyssa Jarvis. Two great grandchildren, Audrey and Bennett Meitl.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills community once again has a chance to demonstrate its generosity.

The Campton Hills Police Department is partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Toys for Tots program and will accept donations through Dec. 13, Chief Dan Hoffman said.

Through a new toy at Christmas, Toys for Tots aims to deliver “a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens,” according to the organization’s website.

Geneva grads sell song to raise St. Charles welcomes money for children’s hospital Button Man Shipping,

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Two Geneva High School graduates wrote a song and are selling it on iTunes and Google Play to raise money for the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Dalton Thompson, 19, wrote the lyrics for “Shoot Like a Star,” and Brandon Evert, 19, wrote and produced the music.

They both sing the song.

Thompson and Evert are 2014 graduates now attending college. Thompson is studying aviation management at Southern Illinois University, and Evert is attending Indiana University, studying to become a dentist.

“This is one of my callings, to help out people in need,” Thompson said. “We are donating every penny we generate from this song for the Riley Hospital for Children. The goal is $20,000. We want to give Riley Hospital for Children a great Christmas present.”

Thompson started a business, Thompson Creations, with four other businesses attached to it. One of them, Louder Records, is the one they use for the song, Thompson said.

It’s a song of encouragement, he said.

“I reach for the sky. I’m ready to fly. Trying to get so far. Trying to get so far. I came to win. Again and again. I always shoot like a star,” are the lyrics to the chorus.

The song costs 99 cents per download. Each time it is downloaded, all the money will go into the Louder Records account for the rest of November and December, Thompson said.

They started the fundraising Oct. 31 and have not gotten their first income report yet, Thompson said. The final income report will come around Christmas, he said.

Evert said he started playing trumpet in fifth grade.

“It escalated from there to guitar and drums,” Evert said.

“I played in a band for a few years, Chasing 401 in eighth grade and my freshman year.

I was the lead singer.”

Hailing the latest Spartan effort A woman named Peg spent four decades vaulting the St. Francis girls volleyball program onto its current pedestal.

Now that she’s departing – announcing her retirement moments after the team completed a state championship four-peat Nov. 14 in Normal – Spartan Nation salutes coach Peg Kopec in step with its triumphant players.

We do, too.

St. Francis won 39 of its 42 matches in 2015 while requiring the full three sets just six times. The Spartans lost but twice to in-state foes, most recently to St. Charles East in a three-setter on Sept. 5. Labor Day arrived two days later, but the Spartans’ exploits appeared effortless all the while. Bumping, setting and spiking can seem that way with NCAA Division I recruits Molly Haggerty (Wisconsin) and Daniele Messa (Missouri State) involved in so much of the action.

The Wheaton-based school counted contributions from the Tri-Cities, too, namely those from senior defensive specialist Olivia Sauls, a Batavian with an ace serve.

As for Kopec, the IHSA’s winningest coach, she’s counting the memories borne of myriad accomplishments. The Spartans’ sweep of Glenbard West marked her 12th state championship – the first in Class 4A – and her 1,238th win.

Give thanks, be safe, dig in Americans ate an estimated 46 million turkeys during Thanksgiving 2014. There’s no denying that’s a lot of gobbling, but can we get that figure broken down into white meat versus dark meat poundage, CNN.com?

Here’s to a holiday where the only tussling should be over who cracks the wishbone or occupies the best spot on the couch for that tryptophan-induced slumber. Add the Bears’ prime time visit to Green Bay to complete what now is an NFL tripleheader and what could be better? Really?

According to AAA, an estimated 46.3 Americans traveled for the Thanksgiving holiday in 2014, adding fuel not simply to cars or commercial jets but the crux of the celebration.

There’s a reason “family” comes before “food” in the dictionary, so before you ask someone to pass the gravy Thursday, please impart your gratitude, too.

Be happy, be safe and be responsible. And be thinking of thawing that turkey. We hear you should allow 24 hours for each four to five pounds of bird you store in the refrigerator.

Remember, it’s the simple things that should be consuming us before we enjoy our meals.

The encryption tangle

THE WASHINGTON POST The terrorist attacks in Paris have sparked fresh debate about the risks and rewards of encrypted communications in smartphones and other devices and whether law enforcement should have what’s called “extraordinary access” in pursuit of criminals and terrorists.

President Obama recently decided not to seek legislation to provide such access, but the thorny mix of technology, policy, commerce and privacy concerns remains unresolved and deserves further scrutiny.

Encryption – scrambling messages so they are unreadable, except to a person with the key to unscramble them – can protect the large majority of users from cybertheft, intrusions and disruption. The tech giants Apple and Google, as well as some independent software-makers, are creating products with built-in encryption that cannot easily be cracked by law enforcement agencies even with a warrant,

although they possess some workarounds. Apple’s popular iMessage system over the iOS8 operating system encrypts messages, and the unlock keys are held only by the end users, not

by Apple. The tech companies say customers want to protect privacy. But encryption also can protect the communications of terrorists and other criminals.

In the past, the Islamic State has used a heavily encrypted free program known as Telegram for promotion and recruitment. Telegram said it is trying to close down the accounts, but it has not been entirely successful. Little is known about how the Paris terrorists plotted their murder spree; they may have evaded detection by using encrypted means or by avoiding digital channels altogether. The Paris police found an unencrypted smartphone in a trash bin near the Bataclan concert hall that contained the text message “Let’s go, we’re starting.”

Immediately after the at-

tacks, the CIA director, John Brennan, became the latest official to decry encryption on smartphones and other devices, saying terrorists “have gone to school on what it is that they need to do in order to keep their activities concealed from the authorities.” The same worry has been expressed by FBI Director James B. Comey. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. this week called for legislation giving law enforcement extraordinary access; he said encryption has hindered 111 investigations by his office.

The technology giants and their allies have resolutely insisted that giving law enforcement any kind of extraordinary access would be disastrous, weakening encryption for all.

When we suggested earlier that there must be some kind of technical compromise, we were told bluntly: No compromise exists, period.

We don’t have a solution, but it would be in everyone’s interest to keep looking for one, before the next catastrophe.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I’d like to respond to the younger person who complained about the recipients of Social Security, who doesn’t have a clue about what’s going on. The cost of living has gone up. Why else are unions always asking for raises, such as the KEA, who [were offered] 16 percent more in income over the next three years? You want older folks to live in a boarding house? How nice of you. I live in a community that raised its rates 5 percent last year, while my Social Security went up 1.7 percent. People like yourself are earning fortunes compared to what I earned when I worked. If you are tired of whining, step forward and give up your Social Security benefits when you retire. Then you see how it really is. Shape up, sport, and get real.

Narrow-minded

There was a Sound Off last week from an individual who took exception to the lack of any Social Security increase.

The recipients were called whiners. It is obvious that the caller does not know anyone on Social Security, like maybe grandparents. Because there was no cost of living increase to Social Security, how does that apply to Congress, state legislators, teachers, firemen, policemen, medical providers and all of the other workers?

Why should they get raises if they are retired, and those on Social Security get none? The caller shows how narrow-minded they are when it comes … to Social Security benefits

without including all individuals receiving wages.

Who raised you?

Seniors, whiners? Come on, get a clue. If you’re lucky, someday you might become a senior. And, from the sound of your message, I think you may have far more problems than whining, as you call it. I have one question for you: Who raised you?

The Kaneland School Board presented their school budget, open to the public. The teachers’ union doesn’t want to release their figure, yet there is a $500,000 difference between the board and the teachers. “SWIMMING TO WIN IT ALL” Rosary in strong position for seasonlong goal of title

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com WINNETKA – After Friday’s IHSA girls state swimming and diving meet preliminaries at New Trier, there was different feel than last year for Rosary.

With a swim-off needed in the 200-yard freestyle relay, there was a break where no girls were allowed to cool down in the pool, as typically is custom.

Waiting in limbo was a new feeling, but Rosary is in the market for a change as it is. The Beads certainly want today’s results to follow suit in being different than last year’s runner-up finish in Evanston.

“It’s definitely different not being able to have a warmdown pool,” Beads junior Alexis Yager said. “But we’re getting used to it now and feeling really good about the position we put ourselves in heading into tomorrow. We all had really strong swims today and we like the position we’re in to bring home a trophy tomorrow.”

Rosary has all three of its relays – two of which finished first in preliminaries and one that was .04 seconds behind the top finisher – as well as eight individuals swimming for points in today’s finals.

Yager and freshman teammate Sydney VanOvermeiren will each take part in two individual races, with Yager racing for separate state titles in the 200 individual medley and 100 breastroke. She had the top prelim time in the IM (2:01.34) and was third in the breastroke (1:03.43). VanOvermeiren will join Yager in both events, but will take part in the consolation race in 100 breaststroke.

The Beads still qualified all three relays in the top six, as did St. Charles North.

North Stars coach Rob Rooney seemed extremely pleased with his squad heading into today’s finals, knowing that while Rosary and Lake Forest may have pulled away from the pack after Friday’s prelims, hardware is still a possibility for his group, which placed fifth in 2014.

“I think today went awesome. It was a great overall day for the girls and St. Charles North,” Rooney said.

“This meet never goes exactly how anyone has planned, but all you can ask for is an opportunity heading into tomorrow and we have that. We have a chance to bring home a trophy.

I’m excited about that and so are the girls and tomorrow we have to come out swinging and see what happens.”

In addition to Rooney seeing his three relays finish in the top six – an absolute must for teams in the trophy hunt – Rooney also saw sisters Monica and Audrey Guyett have strong days, each qualifying in the top six in two races. In addition, Sammy Sauer finished seventh in the 100 freestyle prelims.

Altmayer exhales with 2nd successive honor

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Nose news is good news for Geneva senior McKenzie Altmayer, who expertly covers three-mile distances without respiratory assistance from her nostrils.

The Kane County Chronicle Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year hardly is being self-deprecating when she calls herself a “total mouth-breather.” After Friday’s scheduled nasal sinus surgery to repair a bone spur, swelling and a deviated septum, she shouldn’t have to use those words again.

“I’ve had this problem my whole life,” Altmayer said, “but we’re finally making time to do it.”

If only such procedures and recoveries lasted, say, 16:46, the personal-record time in which Altmayer traversed the course at Peoria’s Detweiller Park at this month’s IHSA Class 3A state meet, good for a seventh-place effort.

Although her nose wasn’t clear at state, the conditions certainly were on a picturesque afternoon that helped many athletes distance themselves from memories of cool, soggy conditions during regionals and sectionals.

“Oh my gosh, it was great,” Altmayer said. “Everyone was so stoked for it. And then the day finally came, and it was just like you knew as soon as you got on the line, you’re like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to run the fastest time today.’

Because there’s fast girls, a fast course, everything was perfect.”

Altmayer earned invitational titles at Wauconda, the Nike Northside/Southside Challenge and St. Charles North during the regular season before punctuating her four-year career with a banner stretch run.

She won the Upstate Eight Conference River Division meet at Sunrise Park in Bartlett in 17:19 before winning the St. Charles North Regional at

The following week, Altmayer navigated pesky winds and persistent rain to place second at the West Aurora Sectional at Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery, finishing in 17:18.

Only eventual state champion Judy Pendergast of Naperville North ran ahead of Altmayer, who verbally committed to Syracuse cross country and track the day after sectionals. She narrowed her top collegiate suitors to Syrcause and Bradley, ultimately choosing the Orange for their friendly vibe and coaches’ penchant for allowing freshmen to ease into their careers.

Although a much-anticipated track season with many of her Vikings cross country teammates awaits in the spring, Altmayer, long a

student of Geneva’s steep running history, can’t help but reflect on the beginning of the end.

“It’s been more than amazing. Honestly, Geneva cross country, it’s become my second family,” she said. “I know I can trust those girls, this team, these coaches, with everything. That level of comfort, it’s going to be hard to replicate anywhere else that I go, and that was the one thing I was looking for when I was looking for a college.

“I knew I had to have an amazing team atmosphere, because this team is just amazing and I wouldn’t be the runner or the athlete in general or the person that I am today without every single person who I’ve met along my way because of Geneva cross country.”

Only Kelly Whitley (16:43 at the 2010 state meet) produced a faster time in pro-

gram history.

That doesn’t surprise veteran Vikings girls and boys coach Bob Thomson. He’d rather marvel about the way Altmayer, bad nose and all, grew stronger and faster throughout her career in an era when some girls athletes struggle with the psychology of producing slower times as their bodies are growing.

Altmayer, who also won this honor in 2014, when she took 11th at state in 17:07, gradually trimmed her Detweiller times for 2015. She ran 17:27 as a freshman and 18:27 as a sophomore.

“She’s in good company with some top-notch runners,” Thomson said. “I’m proud to say I had a hand in coaching her all those years.

She’s going to have a good career ahead of her.”

Thomson has cultivated success behind crafting intensely personal workout

plans for each runner. In all that maneuvering, however, he seldom instructed runners on breathing tactics.

While many follow the time-honored method of breathing in the nose and out the mouth, Altmayer physically couldn’t. She debated undergoing nasal surgery entering her senior season, but ultimately passed when an opportunity to attend the Women’s World Cup in Canada arose. Altmayer shined in soccer before devoting her pursuits to running.

Clearly, one last season of dealing with an old friend didn’t faze her. This fall, Altmayer discovered the ability to take wider breaths without breaking stride.

“I look like a fish and it doesn’t make for very many pretty running pictures,” Altmayer said, “but it gets the job done. I get more air in faster than I used to.”

A year after leading the young Bulldogs to what was then the program’s best 3A state meet finish (11th place), Hillman guided a third-place team in 2015. Batavia won the Upstate Eight Conference River Division and St. Charles North Regional, as well, while taking second at sectionals.

You guys only have been at it for a few weeks, but what is the outlook at this juncture in the season?

I think we’re off to a really good start. I mean, everyone has shown improvement.

Things can always improve.

But … closing frames is our motto here. If you keep closing frames, you’re going to make it. You’re going to do well this season.

Does chanting after strikes or other points keep you all in it?

Yeah, definitely. Keeping our energy up helps us stay positive. Allows us to do what we need to do.

How often do you encounter teams that aren’t as peppy as the Saints?

Even if they are a little

I think this season is kind of more of a grind and just getting through things.

How much do you talk shop with your brother [Aaron, a bowler at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo.] about the college bowling life?

A lot. I mean, I know his coaches are looking at me for coming down there, but nothing too serious yet. … He said the only difference (from high school) is traveling. Otherwise, it’s just bowling with a team like normal.

It turns out he also is a prolific chant brainstormer, however, boosting his value to a deep team even more. Mudlong, who was part of East’s third-place state finisher last season, recently discussed those matters and more with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley. Burroughs helps shape Cadets’ culture

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Thirty minutes after completing the final race of his prep cross country career, Andrew Burroughs mimicked most casual visitors to Peoria’s Detweiller Park.

He reflected.

Although Burroughs’ time and finish at the IHSA Class 3A state meet fell short of the Marmion senior’s standards, he suddenly viewed his 74thplace effort in 15:19 within the proverbial forest in a landscape of trees.

No, Burroughs didn’t beat each of his fellow Cadets to the finish line that day, but he still led them vocally and spiritually during Marmion’s first team state berth in 3A. Testimony from teammates and coaches in a post-race meeting simply solidified something for the Kane County Chronicle Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year: his seasonlong strategy had been a success.

“What I was really proud of was that, walking away and looking back on the season and looking back on my career after the state meet, I knew that I had made a great impact on the program outside of just results,” Burroughs said. “I knew that I had helped change the culture, and that’s something that results could never show.”

Make no mistake, Burroughs, an Elburn resident, consistently jockeyed for position atop a Cadets’ team pack that included sophomore Michael Ronzone of Batavia and junior Charlie Zimmer of Geneva. His career personal record of 15:03 at the Chicago Catholic League meet at Lewis University in October was fourth overall.

At the St. Charles North Regional, Burroughs was third in 16:19, two seconds behind runner-up Ronzone. At the West Aurora Sectional a week later, he steered the Cadets, who climbed from 2A in 2013, away from thoughts of past near-misses and onto state,

Burroughs doubles as sports editor of the Cadet Call, Marmion’s student newspaper, and coach Dan Klatt is the publication’s moderator.

Both appreciated the Chronicle’s headline, then, after Marmion earned its landmark state berth Oct. 31, ultimately advancing from a soggy Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery with a smile.

Burroughs’ own words – “Puddles are puddles” – helped provide the fodder.

“That sort of embodies

who he is as a leader,” Klatt said. “There are excuses out there; I’m just not going to use them.”

The same credo guided Burroughs in fair weather. A four-year varsity contributor, he admittedly came unshackled from his shyness as an underclassman during his junior season, when he advanced to state as an individual, placing 98th in 15:24.

Then-Cadets senior Brady Bobbitt, the KCC’s 2014 Runner of the Year who now is competing at Penn State, offered Burroughs whatever

tutelage he sought, and Burroughs happily absorbed it.

“It’s not just what I have done, it’s about what my whole senior class and what even some of the guys that graduated last year have done,” Burroughs said. “It just feels like we have all the right people on the team, and it’s all people who really care about the sport and just want to get better and create a special bond with each other.”

Burroughs credited part of that atmosphere to his coach and newspaper moderator.

An assistant during the 2012 season before becoming head coach the following fall, Klatt is a former Willowbrook cross country standout who graduated in 2005.

He later competed at Kent State, but an injury during his sophomore season curtailed Klatt’s career.

“He knows a lot about the sport, but the fact that he’s not that much older than us, he also knows what it’s like to be

in our shoes,” Burroughs said.

“When he was in high school, he experienced really big races just like we get to run sometimes.”

Several colleges have shown interest in Burroughs as a cross country and track athlete, including Pittsburgh and Connecticut. Klatt’s knowledge of the recruiting scene leads him to believe schools will want to see Burroughs sustain his success this spring before making a scholarship offer.

Klatt is sure Burroughs will oblige but is more certain of something else, that Burroughs will treat any obstacle as he would a puddle at sectionals.

“He put himself in position to do whatever was best for the team,” Klatt said. “It was awesome. I didn’t have to tell them what to do. I could just tell them to model themselves after Andrew, which is a very powerful thing for a coach to have.”

Niemiec, Kray earn all-state honors Batavia senior quarterback Kyle Niemiec (Class 7A) and Kaneland senior defensive lineman Andrew Kray (Class 6A) earned nods Friday to their respective Illinois Football Coaches AssoKyle Niemiec ciation all-state teams.

Niemiec steered the Bulldogs to the school’s fifth successive Upstate Eight Conference River Division title and a No. 4 seed in the Class 7A playoffs, directing a multifaceted attack.

Batavia (10-2) was eliminated last weekend with a 42-21 quarterfinal loss to Cary-Grove, which visits unbeaten Glenbard West in a semifinal at 1 p.m. today.

Kray, a 6-foot, 260-pound stalwart, helped anchor a Knights team that returned to the playoffs after a hiatus in 2014. The Knights survived a wild finish to defeat Belvidere North, 33-31, for the program’s first postseason victory as a 6A team.

Kaneland (7-4) also was eliminated by an eventual state semifinalist, losing to unbeaten Montini, 42-7, in the second round.

In all, the IFCA recognized 144 all-state athletes, naming 18 apiece from each of the state’s eight playoff classes.

North girls b-ball moves to 2-0 PONTIAC – The St. Charles North girls basketball team routed Champaign Centennial, 54-14, Friday to improve to 2-0.

The North Stars built upon a 20-point advantage at halftime.

Bloomington countered with a quick equalizer midway through the second period. Jake Slaker led the Thunder on a 2-on-1 the other way.

A fight broke out in the third period after the Thunder’s Steven Merl took Matt Kiersted hard into the boards, leaving the defenseman down on the ice. Immediately, Marc Johnstone confronted Merl and the two dropped gloves over the exchange. Kiersted left the ice on his own power after the play.

“The hit was from behind and our guy went into the boards pretty bad,” captain Marcel Godbout said. “Johnstone did the right thing by sticking up for his teammate and he fought the guy. You respect that.”

The Steel are now 2-1-3 in their last six games and with the point moved out of ninth place in the Eastern Conference. While getting out of last place provides limited comfort, Lethemon said the club is already looking to take the next step.

“We’re still not happy. We want more than the one point we got tonight. We’re hungry for more,” Lethemon said.

Rooney was happy to have the sisters advance, but knows success at the state meet means a complete team effort.

“It’s not about individuals,” Rooney said. “It’s not about seniors or freshmen, it’s about this team. A team effort is the most important thing.”

Monica Guyett also will race in the 200 freestyle finals after finishing fifth in the prelims, while Audrey Guyett will swim in the 100 backstroke finals with her second-place finish Friday.

GENEVA – The Chicago Steel are making progress as a team, but the wins have yet to follow.

After three periods weren’t enough to decide the in-state matchup against the Bloomington Thunder on Friday, the Thunder’s Jeremy Davies went top shelf for the game-winning goal to clinch a 3-2 victory. The Steel (5-9-3) have earned points in five of their past six USHL games, but earning consistent wins has proved to be a challenge.

“There’s definitely progress, but there needs to be another step,” associate coach Dallas Steward said. “Some of the mistakes that we’ve been making are the same ones we’ve been making and been working on. That’s maturity and in this league, every game is a battle.”

In the 3-on-3 overtime period, Davies took the puck across goaltender John Lethemon’s face and flipped the game-winner in the top of the net over the sprawling goalie’s pads.

“It was a tough goal, tough to swallow,” Lethemon said.

“He did go high, but I tried to go over and get out but I got a little caught.”

Lethemon earned the start between the pipes for the Steel as Daniel Vladar was sidelined with an injury sustained in the team’s last game against Youngstown (OH.) on Sunday. Vladar, a third round pick of the Boston Bruins in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, took a shot to his mask and the mask broke near the bridge of his nose, rendering the netminder unavailable for the game.

The Steel were sluggish for long periods of time in Friday’s game. It took nearly 10 minutes for Chicago to record its first shot, and the team was outshot, 39-25, for the game.

WEEKEND LIFE Bickering can scramble mom’s brain to bits Today’s column comes to you compliments of Mother Clucker’s Kitchen in Chicago.

Yes, yes indeed.

For it was their menu I found stuffed in my junk drawer one morning last week while rooting around for something to scribble on, as my children zipped up their backpacks before school. (By the way, this place has awesome chicken, ribs and hush puppies. Seriously, their hush puppies really ARE the best I’ve ever had, but I digress.)

And it’s a good thing I found something to write on, too, because if you ask my daughter, my memory isn’t what it used to be. I don’t agree. But hey,

Their bickering scrambles my brain to bits.

A few minutes earlier, I’d been sitting astride my exercise bike (it wasn’t plugged in, lest I stress my aging knee, but I was still MOVING, dang it!), when a debate broke out in the family room. A debate about what? Oh yeah, I can’t remember. Whatever. Wait – I’d complimented Holly on something; Noah agreed Holly

was awesome; and, yeah, “She’s a great mom, too,” he added wryly, referring to her apparently annoying habit of knocking on his bedroom door to rouse him from his roost so that she’ll not be late for school. And down they spiraled, into the black hole that is bickering.

To be fair, my two aren’t passionate bickerers – but still, STOP IT. “Quiet on the set!” I said, grinning as I shrugged, the bike’s unemployed power pack knocking against the bike frame as I pedaled. Who knows what inspires such parenting interventions, but they’re effective, no? My

teenagers paused for a beat while they took in the scene.

Yeah. The momentum of their debate apparently interrupted, the bickering stopped.

Score! Foiled again! Kind of like that time I climbed into the bathtub with them, myself fully-clothed, when they were fever-struck toddlers crying their eyes out. Oh, the smiles!

The quiet!

But here we are now, smack in the middle of the dark ages of adolescent sibling whatever-you-call-it, and they’re on to me. Nobody smiled. They just gazed at me like dogs do when they don’t quite understand what the devil you’re up to. Whatever

it takes to achieve peace, I say! I’m down for that.

As for the bickering, as long as they get it all sorted out in time to put me in a home, we’re good. But perhaps I can help them learn to peacefully coexist by giving them a budget and allowing them to plan our family’s vacation out west – but only if they cooperate in the process?

Hmmm. Something to ponder.

In the meantime, however, I’ll just keep on pedaling.

A slow cooker cranberry cake for Thanksgiving A recently released cookbook by food consultants, cooking teachers and food bloggers Roxanne Wyss and Kathy Moore takes slow cookers in a new direction.

“Slow Cooker Desserts” (St. Martin’s Press) picks up where savory dishes leave off. It presents more than 50 treats – many accompanied by attractive photographs showing the finished products – that lend themselves to the slow cooker: cakes, puddings, cheesecakes, cobblers and fondues.

There’s practical advice on what works best in small slow cookers (1 to 2 quarts, round), medium (3 ½ to 5 quarts, round or oval) and large (5 quarts or larger, round or oval).

Users will no longer need to constantly check the oven to make sure their special cake doesn’t over-bake.

A fine example is the authors’ recipe (see below) for Nantucket Cranberry Cake, which would certainly look good gracing the Thanksgiving dinner table. But because cranberries are so easy to freeze, home cooks just might want to turn to this recipe year round.

TOM’S COOKBOOK LIBRARY Tom Witom Nantucket Cranberry Cake (Makes one [7-in.] round cake) • Use a 5 quart or larger slow cooker • 1 cup fresh cranberries • ⅓ cup chopped pecans, toasted • ¼ cup plus ⅔ cup sugar • ¾ cup all-purpose flour • ¼ tsp. baking powder • ¼ tsp. salt • 2 large eggs, at room temperature • 6 Tbl. unsalted butter, melted, plus more for the pan • ½ tsp. pure vanilla extract • ¼ tsp. pure almond extract Generously butter the bottom of a 7-inch springform pan. Crumple a sheet of aluminum foil, about 24 inches long, into a thin strip, then form it into a 7-inch ring.

Place the ring in the bottom of a large slow cooker.

Arrange the cranberries and pecans evenly over the bottom of the prepared pan.

Sprinkle with ¼ cup of the sugar.

In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining ⅔ cup sugar, flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

Whisk the eggs lightly in a small bowl until blended. Stir in the melted butter, vanilla and almond extract. Stir the butter mixture into the flour mixture until blended. Pour the batter in the pan over the cranberries and pecans.

Place the filled springform pan on the foil ring in the slow cooker. Cover the slow cooker and bake on high for 2 ½ to 3 hours, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Transfer the pan to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes, then invert the cake onto a serving plate. Remove the outer ring and bottom of the pan to reveal the cranberries and pecans. Serve warm.

Fortunately, you can take many steps to prevent or avoid metabolic syndrome: • Maintain a healthy body weight.

• Get regular exercise.

• Choose a healthy diet.

It should be low in salt, in saturated and trans fats, and in highly processed foods such as white bread and sugary sodas. It should be high in omega-3 fats (as found in salmon and tuna, for example), in whole grains and fiber, and in vegetables and fruit.

• Drink only moderate amounts of alcohol (one drink per day for women, one to two for men).

• Don’t smoke.

Talk to your doctor about whether you need medicines to lower blood pressure or triglycerides if they are high, and to raise HDL if it is low and is not raised just by exercising.

Also talk to your doctor about whether you need medicines to lower blood sugar if you have diabetes or “pre-diabetes.” People with this condition have blood sugar that is above normal but not at diabetic levels.

Metabolic syndrome is a condition that doesn’t always cause symptoms but does put your health at risk. This is especially true if you have other risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking or having other close relatives with heart disease.

If you have metabolic syndrome, you may be able to eliminate it completely without medicines – just with changes in diet and exercise.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and live with my parents and a brother, who is 16. Sometimes I get the feeling that my parents love my brother more than me. I’ve talked to my parents and they assure me that they love both of us equally and that making sure we both become good citizens who are happy and who enjoy life is their main goal in life.

I’m not quite sure why I feel this way.

It could be that boys are treated a little differently than girls or that my brother is their natural child while I am their adopted daughter.

My parents are wonderful and since I am adopted, I couldn’t have landed with a better family. Still, I have moments where I feel like an outsider. Is there any way I can overcome this occasional inferior feeling? – Nameless, Toledo, Ohio Nameless: It’s completely

normal for adopted children to wonder if their parents love them as much as they love their natural born children. I can tell you I have never found the parents who give less love to an adopted son or daughter.

This ban (Prohibition) lasted thirteen years, and studies conducted during this time span showed that there was a sharp drop in health problems related to alcohol consumption, especially cirrhosis of the liver. Another plus during this time was an extreme drop in family violence and discord. That was the upside.

Unfortunately, Prohibition also gave birth to a large and violent criminal organization devoted to selling alcohol illegally. Lawmakers ultimately decided the experiment caused more problems than it solved and termed it a failure. Prohibition was repealed in 1933.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor says I have metabolic syndrome. He said it’s “like diabetes but not diabetes,” which I don’t understand.

Can you explain what it is, and how I can fix it?

Dear Reader: Metabolic syndrome is quite common, but not very well known. Many of my patients have it; nearly 50 million Americans have it – and many of them don’t know it.

Metabolic syndrome is dangerous. If you have it, you have a much higher risk of several major health conditions. Recent studies find your risk of developing diabetes is four to five times higher.

I guess that’s what your doctor meant when he said it was “like diabetes but not diabetes.” Your risk of stroke or a heart attack is about double. Your risk of dying prematurely is 30 to 60 percent higher.

Most important, you can cure it with changes in your lifestyle before you develop health problems.

You have metabolic syndrome if you have three or more of the following: • High blood pressure (hypertension).

• Excess belly fat. This is measured as a waist size of 40 inches or more for men or 35 inches or more for women.

• High triglycerides.

This blood fat often is checked when you have a blood test for cholesterol.

• Low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). This is often called “good cholesterol.”

• High fasting blood sugar.

By the way, if you just determined you have only one or two, but not three, of these factors, don’t feel entirely relieved. You’re still at higher risk of heart attack and stroke than people without any of

At the bridge table, though, weak hands in terms of points can be strong because of their distribution, particularly when they have a good fit with partner.

In today’s deal, do you agree with North’s one-heart opening? Given that you have bid one heart and partner has responded two diamonds, natural and game-forcing, after West sneaks in a two-spade overcall, what should you do next?

West’s two-spade intervention was debatable, given that he knew the opponents had his side heavily outgunned. But it worked well here, because East raised to four spades.

Many experts sitting North would have opened two hearts, planning, come what may, to rebid in diamonds to show the 6-5 with limited pointcount. Now, though, despite only nine points, North had a super hand.

He could have quietly raised to three diamonds, but he reasonably preferred a jump to four clubs. This was a splinter bid, showing a big diamond fit and a singleton (or void) in clubs.

Then, over four spades, South, with such poor trumps, might have signed off in five diamonds; but with two aces, it was reasonable to pass, inviting a slam. However, North settled for five diamonds.

South, who was happy to lose one trick in each minor, won with her spade ace and played a diamond to dummy’s ace. When the king dropped, declarer cashed the diamond queen, played a heart to her ace and returned the heart jack. When the queen appeared, South claimed all 13 tricks.
