met last week with 8-year-old Kate Shanahan, who had been diagnosed at the age of 3 with Type 1 diabetes. She absolutely loves pandas, walking her dog and playing with her friends, and you never would know she’s wearing an insulin pump.

I asked her what she likes to do most after school, and she

quickly responded with, “Climbing trees!” I assumed they would be big oaks with layers of exterior roots and low places from which she could step up into the trees.

But, no, she ran outside and immediately swung herself over a branch about 6 feet off the ground, and before I knew it, she was at the top of a small tree.

She did the same thing on the playground equipment behind her Geneva home.

In a flash, she was on the top of the swing set.

“She’s a monkey,” said her mom, Shannon, who said she gets calls all the time from neighbors wondering whether she knows her youngest daughter

Gabby’s Kitchen in St. Charles closes

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After more than four years of serving homestyle cooking on the city’s west side, Gabby’s Kitchen has closed.

The St. Charles restaurant announced the closure in a Facebook post, as well as in a typed message taped to a door.

“It has been an honor serving you for over four years and we wish everyone well,” the message on the door states.

“We will cherish the memories and deeply appreciate the patronage you have given us – we will miss you dearly!”

Gabby’s Kitchen, 1650 W. Main St., opened in 2010 across from the Valley Shopping Center on the site of the former Springview Restaurant, which closed in 2008.

“It’s definitely a shame to see them go,” said Matt O’Rourke, the city’s economic de-

velopment division manager.

While the closure adds to the vacancies in the West Gateway, O’Rourke said the losses are being outweighed by the new businesses that have opened or plan to open there.

Within the past year, he said, West Towne Market has welcomed new eateries; O’Reilly Auto Parts store opened near the Valley Shopping Center; and Discount Tire recently opened on Randall Road.

West of Randall Road, he said, a Buona Beef restaurant is planned for the former Deck Yard on West Main Street, and The Learning Experience – a daycare facility – is planned for a site farther west.

Additionally, O’Rourke said, some existing buildings near Randall Road and Prairie Street have received upgrades, such as new facades. That tells him groups are interested in

Clerk pays $500 fine, apologizes for violation

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham pleaded guilty Thursday to violating the county’s ethics ordinance by using county-related computer equipment to conduct prohibited political activities, a misdemeanor.

Cunningham, his attorney Gary Johnson and Special Prosecutor Charles Colburn appeared before Kane County Judge Elizabeth Flood.

Through an agreement, Cunningham was assessed the maximum fine the ordinance allows, $500, plus $45 in court costs.

“I did it,” Cunningham said. “I screwed up, and I have no defense for it. I am so

embarrassed. I’m being held accountable. ... I deserve the maximum.”

Colburn, of the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor, was in the role of a special prosecutor because Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon would have a conflict, as he represents county officers, Colburn said.

According to the complaint, filed Wednesday, from October 2013 to March 2014, Cunningham “intentionally used any property or resources of Kane County in connection with any prohibited political activity, in that he used a Kane County-related computer and associated email address to prepare for, organize and participate in politi-

cal events,” in violation of the county’s ethics ordinance.

Colburn said state charges did not apply to Cunningham in this case because it lacked the element of intent.

The issue was raised during Cunningham’s successful March 18 primary race for the Republican nomination. He defeated challenger County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, and won his fourth term in the Nov. 4 general election.

Davoust filed the ethics complaint.

“I am grateful that our ethics ordinance has received some vindication,” Davoust said. “This went through the system, and a conclusion was reached that this was not ethical behavior. It had its day in

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The father of a 44-year-old St. Charles Township man charged with manufacturing marijuana filed two orders of protection against him this year, according to court records.

Downers Grove resident J. Michael Robbins in July petitioned for an order of protection in DuPage County on behalf of his father, Joseph RobDavid Robbins bins, after he found out his son, David M. Robbins, was giving Joseph Robbins cannabis oil four times a day, the petition states.

J. Michael Robbins’ other petition was to protect himself and his wife from David Robbins because he was sending harassing text

messages, according to the second petition.

“I feel that without any order in place prohibiting contact, he will continue his harassment and threats,” J. Michael Robbins wrote in his second petition, which was filed in October.

David Robbins was charged with violating one of the orders of protection when two handguns and a rifle were found Nov. 12 at his home in the 38W500 block of Mallard Lake Road in St. Charles Township, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. It was in the protective order for Joseph Robbins that he was ordered to turn over the firearms.

David Robbins also was charged with manufacture/ delivery of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana, a Class X felony; and Class 1 felonies of possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and production of more than 200 marijuana plants.

Hospital officials discovered cannabis in Joseph Robbins’ system after he was taken to the hospital on July 11 with extremely high blood pressure, according to one of the protective orders. “[My ex-wife] told me that our son, David ... gave him cannabis oil four times a day for some time thinking that was going to help him with his prostate cancer,” J. Michael Robbins wrote in his first petition.

Joseph Robbins, 92, died in September, and so the order of protection in his name was vacated, according to court records. After the elder Robbins’ death, J. Michael Robbins on Sept. 30 received texts from his son saying that he would be “joining Grandpa soon,” according to his second petition.

David Robbins on Thursday afternoon remained in the Kane County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond, according to online records.

Specifically, Cunningham used his own iPad and iPhone from a home office to access the county’s Wi-Fi about a dozen times for politically related emails about scheduling media endorsement interviews and reviewing campaign brochures.

“This was not a campaign run out of the Kane County Clerk’s Office,” Colburn said.

Cunningham said he has separated his accounts from the county’s so it will not happen again.

“I apologize,” Cunningham said. “I have a lot to learn.”

Colburn said a former deputy clerk, Jeff Ward of Geneva, who also was the subject of an ethics complaint, will not be charged.

Citing an opinion from former state’s attorney John Barsanti on the county’s 2010 ethics ordinance, Colburn said it did not apply to Ward because he was an employee of an elected office holder.

Barsanti is now a judge.

Ward had admitted he accessed Cunningham’s campaign finance records with the Illinois State Board of Elections to correct an error on March 12. Ward used his county email account to make the correction and sent Cunningham a copy to the clerk’s official email address.

Ward was suspended without pay for five days, later resigned, and then was paid $11,298.42 in a severance package, according to county records.

County executives poised to get raises

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Many of Kane County’s executives who received a 5 percent salary bump this fiscal year are poised to get another 5 percent raise for the upcoming year.

The Finance and Budget Committee is expected to consider the proposed increases today.

With the exception of Finance Director Joe Onzick’s proposed salary, each increase has already been OK’d by another standing committee. The discussions happened in closed session.

Thursday, the Administration Committee considered 5 percent raises for Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock and Staff Executive Don Biggs, which would bring their annual salaries to $149,371 and $111,300, respectively.

Documents provided by County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen indicate 2 percent of each of their raises already has been provided in the 2015 budget. The remaining 3 percent will be funded through reductions elsewhere.

Lauzen said the raises are

within the frozen property tax levy.

Agenda documents for today’s meeting indicate five other executives are on track for 5 percent increases: Mark VanKerkhoff of development and community services; Scott Berger of community reinvestment; Barb Jeffers of the health department; Don Bryant of emergency management; and Onzick.

If the raises are approved, the salaries would be $120,327 for VanKerkhoff; $106,045 for Berger; $120,598 for Jeffers; $71,582 for Bryant; and $126,788 for Onzick.

Brad Sauer of emergency communications is poised for a 2 percent raise, bringing his salary to $98,532, documents show.

Details about the raises proposed for Sheila McCraven of human resources and Mark Armstrong of assessments were not included in the agenda packet.

Of the 10 employees, all but Biggs – who was a new hire – received 5 percent raises for the fiscal 2014. The County Board approved the raises 175.

The county’s fiscal year begins Dec. 1.

Jim Oberweis, R - S u g a r Grove, on Thursday successfully challenged a gubernatorial veto of a Jim Oberweis bill he sponsored to raise the speed limit on Illinois toll highways to 70 miles per hour, according

to a news release.

The Senate on Thursday voted 44-5-1 to override Gov. Pat Quinn’s veto of Senate Bill 2015, the release states.

The bill will next move to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Quinn on Aug. 26 vetoed Senate Bill 2015, citing studies from the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority that indicate motorists already are driving above the speed limit on the tollways.

“The governor’s argument that tollway drivers

already exceed the speed limit is a great argument as to why we should increase the current speed limit to 70 mph,” Oberweis wrote in the release. “And it is an argument we have already addressed in the original law. Those who exceed the 70 mph limit by more than 26 mph now face tougher penalties.”

Senate Bill 2015 initially passed by an 111-4 vote of the House of Representatives on May 29 and by a 48-6 vote of the Senate on May 21.

Sandra Webster store in Geneva closing after 18 years

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After 18 years, Sandra Webster Lincheck is closing her women’s clothing store – named Sandra Webster – to retire.

The retail store, at 209 W. State St., features clothing that is not mass produced, but created in small quantities by designers from around the world, Lincheck said.

“Susan Kirschner has her own cutters and seamstresses for her own designs,” Lincheck said of the Berkeley, California, designer.

The store’s clothing is 30 to 75 percent off, she said.

The store does not have the packed-in atmosphere of many other retail stores, instead having clothes line the walls with wide open spaces in between.

Lincheck said that was the aesthetic she wanted, having open space.

“It’s minimalist,” Lincheck said.

Lincheck said she started weaving and knitting with Denise Kavanagh, founder of the Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles Township, 30 years ago.

Lincheck said she had been a department store buyer for the Joseph Spiess Company, eventually becoming its director of advertising, before going out on her own.

Lincheck said she has been living in Seattle and commutes back to her home in St. Charles about eight times a year.

Once the store is closed, she said she will go back to her roots – weaving, knitting and beading. But she said she also will start doing things on her “bucket list” – learning yoga, ballet and piano.

She said, eventually, she and her husband will move back to St. Charles.

Hildegard Marguerite Gloege, age 93, of North Fort Meyers, Florida passed away and Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral, Florida.

She was born September 17, 1921 in Cologne, Germany to Franz and Ida (Kremer) Jung. On December 11, 1945, she was united in marriage to Friedrich W. Gloege. Fritz and Hilda Gloege immigrated to the United State with their two year old son in 1949 and became a United States citizen in 1955.

Hildegard was an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the German Society of Pennsylvania and fondly remembered for her baking, needlework and participation in their annual Christkindlmarket.

She is survived by her son, Fritz (Randalynn); two grandsons, Gabriel D. (Jing) and Theodore F. (Katy) Gloege; a great-grandson, Tristan Li Gloege; and three nieces, Lieselotte Gloege, Gabrielle (Peter) Jansen and Brigitte (Heinz) Klein.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Franz and her parents.

THE WASHINGTON POST Recent events have underscored anew how Mexico – despite genuine signs of economic and political progress – remains a state lacking the rule of law. A new low point is the disappearance of dozens of students from a teachers college, and much will depend on whether the government responds effectively.

Conflict among drug cartels dominated the six-year term of President Felipe Calderón, who threw the military into the battle at great cost but did not uproot the cartels. His successor, Enrique Peña Nieto, came to office in December 2012 with a different emphasis, seeking to kick-start a series of bold economic reforms. His first two years in power have been promising.

But the scourge of violence has risen again in a way that cannot be ignored and that imperils the reform agenda.

Late one September night, in the town of Iguala, buses carrying the students were attacked by police. One student and six other people were killed. Forty-three students were captured and turned over to an organized-crime gang. They are feared dead. According to the Mexican authorities, the mayor of the town ordered the violent onslaught. The mayor, now detained, reportedly ordered the attack out of fear the students were going to interrupt a speech by his wife.

Protests have erupted across the country. Peña Nieto’s government did not respond with alacrity. The president was silent for days, and then his attorney general, exhausted, carelessly dismissed repetitive questions about the case at a news conference, saying he was “tired” or “fed up.” Those words have now become the signature slogan of the demonstrators; people are fed up with business as usual. Peña Nieto went ahead with plans to travel to Asia while the country was in an uproar, which did not help matters.

Peña Nieto cannot dodge this crisis.

He must respond to public revulsion over the missing 43 students by making sure a complete and transparent investigation is carried out, not only into the perpetrators, but also into structural and institutional ills that have brought Mexico to this point.

“Fishing practice?” you ask, chuckling.

I’m a coach on Marmion Academy’s bass fishing team.

“That’s a high school sport?”

Illinois boasts about 250 IHSA teams, including most Kane County schools.

“But fishing ‘practice?’ Sounds funny.”

At tournaments, pilot the 10-horse outboards around Lake Shabanna while contestants fish; locally, keep water bottles on hand in case of dehydration during the grueling hourlong practices; loan spinning rods to beginners who bird-nest fluorocarbon bait casters.

“Huh?” That’s angler-speak for a tangled line.

At practices, but I practice magnanimity. Using rusting daredevils and jitterbugs I used as a kid, or, alternately, my fly rod, I mostly hook only lily pads and trees. That way, the students, along with head coach Joe Large – my former student and now academic dean, my immediate boss – look good landing all the fish.

“You practice on weekdays?”

Once, before or after school, but we’re always playing hooky. That’s fishing humor.

“Don’t quit your day job.”

Teaching English. Teaching writing.

“Oh, right, like don’t write sentence fragments.”

Exactly.

“You said something about how fishing was like writing?”

What anglers feel strolling down to a pond matches what writers feel when sitting down at a desk. Both are after something hidden, something they intuit there, if it can just be lured out.

“More fishing humor.”

Anglers lose themselves to sky, shoreline shrubs and trees, and the

splash of a War Eagle 3/8 oz. Chartreuse Buzzbait on a wind-rippled surface. They anticipate a strike that may or may not come. If it does, they feel the fearful ecstasy of the hit – set the hook, adjust the drag, don’t let it jump!

Absorbed by the pull, their whole being transcends place and time.

Writers sit on the shores of their unconscious, fishing deep, dark pools.

A word is cast out, then another, then another. Most return with nothing, or nothing but pond-bottom muck. When suddenly the right word hits, they hope it stays hooked, draft after draft.

On a good day, enough catches fill a sentence.

On a great day, a stringer of sentences fills a paragraph. On the rarest of days, they land their lake’s limit, nothing thrown back, the keepers filling two or three pages.

“Well, all I can say is, I hope you’re better at retrieving sentences than landing bass.”

Let’s just say I won’t be fishing for compliments.

Back woes can’t rob Sabo of good cheer

T. CHARLES – Taylor Sabo wasn’t rattled about the notion of undergoing spinal fusion surgery as an eighth-grader.

In fact, Sabo was rather intrigued.

“I just didn’t think it was that big of a deal,” Sabo said.

“I know that sounds weird but when you’re little, sometimes you want to break your arm or something so you can have a cool cast. It was that type of thing. I was like ‘Sweet, this will be cool.’ ” That indomitable spirit continues to serve the St. Charles North sophomore well. Sabo, battling the effects of Scoliosis, has leapt back into cheerleading and also plays lacrosse at North.

“I’m pretty proud of it, but I think the proudness only runs through my family or my close friends because I think they’re the only ones who understand, besides me,” Sabo said. “Not everyone really understands what I went through. … It’s still not that big of a deal to me, but nobody really gets it if you didn’t actually go through it.”

Sabo’s cheerleading roots trace back to first grade, when she lived in Ohio, and she stayed with it until surgery in April 2013 called her athletic future into question.

Surgery became the obvious path when doctors told Sabo her laterally curved spine and twisted rib cage could result in substantial problems – such as diminished lung capacity – if corrective action wasn’t taken.

Sabo had surgery at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, an extensive procedure during which she had 11 vertebrae fused together to straighten her back.

“What slapped you into shape real quick is she was actually part of the neurolo-

gy floor at Lurie,” said Dale Sabo, Taylor’s father. “So here’s your kid in a what, 8-hour, 9-hour surgery, split open from the base of her neck to her tailbone, and you’re kind of feeling sorry for yourself. A day later, you’re walking down the hall and you see kids with real

problems. I mean, this was not going to kill her. It was going to inhibit her ability to breathe, it was going to leave her a little disfigured, but it wasn’t going to be fatal, and you see parents that are going through much worse.”

Sabo left the hospital about a week later two inches

of cheerleading. Everyone is telling her, ‘No, you can’t do it, no you can’t do it,’ and she’s like, ‘I can do it, I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ ” Her road back wasn’t without its setbacks, often of the painful variety.

“I did [a back handspring] on the trampoline, and I remember after that it hurt so bad,” Sabo said. “I heard a bunch of things crack. …

They hadn’t cracked my back in a long time, so I instantly started bawling.”

Sabo sat out her freshman year cheering at North but went out for lacrosse last spring before joining North’s cheer program this fall. She can’t do everything – tumbling, in particular, puts too much strain on her back – but Sabo participates in stunts and other components of the squad, including the competitive cheer team.

Pipeline treats St. Francis well St. Patrick quintet helps propel Spartans to 6A semifinal

ecess football begat TriCity Chargers football, which begat St. Francis football, which begat Saturday’s Class 6A state semifinal at Nazareth.

OK, so maybe the path hasn’t been that seamless for a quintet of Spartans seniors from St. Patrick Catholic School in St. Charles. It simply feels that way as Jack Ahern, Quinn Calcagno, Michael Shaw, John Vargyas and Nathan Zito happily channel the milestones en route to the biggest game of their prep careers.

“Usually before the season, we talk about it, and now we’re just kind of living it and we’re making the most that we can out of it right now,” said Vargyas, St. Francis’ left guard and middle linebacker.

“But a couple weeks from now, looking back, I’m sure it will be awesome to see that we’ve played this long together now.”

All the better if that reflection comes at the University

As evidenced by their bodies of work and bodies at large – at 6-foot-3, Shaw, a receiver/defensive back, is the tallest of the five – the group developed.

“That’s what it’s all about, when you have two staffs that put a lot of time in and you have two good teams,” Racki said. “Even though we haven’t played Francis in awhile, I think knowing Mike and him knowing me, he brings familiarity to his team to where Francis is going to have a good idea of what we do or what we’ve done.”

Blahunka, of Carmel, Indiana, and Shawver, of Louisville, Kentucky, hail from just two of the 22 states represented this week. Competition began at 8:15 a.m.

Paired for the first time this year, Blahunka and Shawver train with an Indianapolis-based club. Their parents can tell you it’s about a 2½-hour drive on Interstate 65 between the families’ respective hometowns.

“We immediately bonded and we basically adopted each other’s children,” said Blahunka’s mom, Tammy.

GENEVA – May Wiza joked Thursday that some people think her surname is short for “Wizard.”

By week’s end, there might be some believers.

Walk into Fox Valley Ice Arena without paying the $15 required to attend this week’s U.S. Figure Skating Midwestern Sectional Championships and it’s enough of a scene.

Skaters from five age groups adjust their skates, adjust their uniforms, fidget by their parents, jump rope and wait for awards just inside the lobby.

When the doors to Fox Valley’s NHL rink swing open, those images out front are just the start. Sure, there’s polite quiet that provides the usual accompaniment to competitors’ music at these sorts of events, but the volunteers on the other side of the ice provide equal spectacle. They observe and react furiously in tempo, not unlike their bosses. Wiza, fellow co-chair Pegg Hislop and scores of others are putting in 12-plushour days all so this week can sparkle.

The Fox Valley staff shares the workload, and in fact is part of the reason the Skating Council of Illinois pushed to hold sectionals here.

Manager Paul O’Dacre’s charges are fluent not just in hockey, but in figure skating, too. Fox Valley skating director Rockne Brubaker is a former international pairs skater who can channel the pressure of pushing to qualify for nationals and beyond.

STC East girls basketball bashes Boylan KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE SCHAUMBURG – The St. Charles East girls basketball team earned its second straight lopsided win to start the season, beating Rockford Boylan, 71-55, on Thursday at the Schaumburg Invitational.

Katie Claussner scored 24 points and Kyra Washington added 17, including five 3-pointers.

East coach Lori Drumtra said “we’ve come out ready to play” so far this season.

“I think Katie Claussner has played really, really well,”

Drumtra said. “Kyra has shot the ball really well. Those two together, they account for a lot of points but we’ve got other people stepping up, too, and contributing, which is kind of nice.”

East (2-0) led at halftime, 35-17. Hannah Vitkus added 11 points for the Saints, who resume tournament play Saturday against Evanston.

Royals, who led, 19-17, at halftime, also benefited from double-figure scoring from Krystal Cortes (13 points) and Megan Conlin (11).

In other tournament action, host Aurora Christian blitzed Timothy Christian, 63-23, behind Natasha Brown’s 15 points and 17 rebounds. Still, the Gary Vargyas factor – he was the boys’ defensive coordinator on their eighthgrade Tri-City team – made an impact, too.

“We were all just really close, and we all decided that we were going to go to St. Francis,” Calcagno said. “We were all pretty good at football, Mr. Vargyas was a coach, so he basically told us that he’d kick our [behind] if we didn’t go. So we all kind of went.”

Bobowski, a Wheaton product, acknowledges the Spartans are “kind of all over the place” when it comes to their west suburban backgrounds.

Football prompts the fusion, and Ahern, Calcagno, Shaw, Vargyas and Zito help the cause.

“You know, when you go in as freshmen, everyone kind of has their group, coming with the guys they know,” Bobowski said. “But, I mean, we’ve

really opened up as a team and really become a family. It’s not just the St. Pat’s kids or the St. Mike’s kids (in Wheaton) or St. John’s kids (in Winfield). It’s really just become the Spartans. It’s become one family, one team and just really playing as one.”

High schoolers don’t get recess – one of the detriments to growing up – but St. Francis’ St. Patrick’s connection figures another similar group might not be far off the pipeline.

That doesn’t detract from their own special bond, however.

“Recently, we found an old picture of our Tri-City guys, and it’s just different seeing how [far] we’ve all come,” Calcagno said.

Calcagno anchors a threeman defensive front and leads the team with 8½ sacks.

Vargyas (four sacks) works in support of that group, which has been St. Francis’ defensive strongsuit throughout the season.

“It makes my job a lot easier playing behind those guys,” Vargyas said. “They’re great up front and they do their job, and that’s what really sets them apart from everyone else, you know. They just hustle.

They’re awesome. Great work ethic out of all those kids.”

That last part sounds like something Vargyas’ father, Gary, might say. As Calcagno recalls, the Spartans’ defensive backs coach delivered an important – if not partially tongue-in-cheek – proclamation a few years ago.

Calcagno, at least, was undecided about his high school destination when the Spartans won the 5A state title in 2008, a team that featured John Vargyas’ older brother, Tony, as a junior running back/defensive back and role model to the then- sixth-graders. Calcagno said his parents told everyone he’d likely be bound for St. Charles East, but he gradually began feeling a pull to join his friends at St. Francis, where

GENEVA – The Patten House restaurant and bar in Geneva was honored with the third annual Mayor’s Choice Award for Business Investment for restoring and preserving the historic character of the building, located at 124 S. Second St. in Geneva. Mayor Kevin Burns presented the award to Patten House owner Nancy Luyten on Nov. 14 at the city’s annual Business Holiday Kickoff Breakfast at the Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva. Nestled amidst Geneva’s downtown, the Patten House is now a multi-level Cajun-style restaurant that offers private rooms, dining rooms, a full-service bar, lounge, wraparound deck and garden patio.

William Sekalias of St. Charles has been appointed as the administrator of Presence Pine View Care Center in St. Charles. St. Charles resident Dr. William Small Jr. recently was named chair of Gynecological Cancer Intergroup, a leading international organization focused on gynecologic clinical trials, with more than 25 member cooperative oncology groups throughout the world, states a news release. Small will lead the organization’s efforts to conduct and promote clinical trials to improve outcomes for women with gynecologic cancer.

Chris Johnson has been appointed the new chief executive of Classic Cinemas. The appointment to lead Classic Cinemas comes nearly 35 years after Johnson began working for the company as an usher at the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove. Today, Johnson oversees Classic Cinemas’ 13 theaters, including the Charlestowne Mall theater in St. Charles.

Bill Harris, a longtime Geneva resident, has recently formed W.F. Harris Consulting LLC. Harris’ new firm offers expertise in project management within the corporate-production, event-management and creative-design arenas.

Dear Abby: The holidays will soon be here, and so will something that may seem petty, but really irks me. My friends have a large home with plenty of room, so they usually host the holiday dinners. We – the guests – supply a few side dishes to accompany the meal. I usually bring several sides because I like to cook and I enjoy variety.

My problem is presentation. I bring my sides in nice casserole dishes and do my best to make them look appealing. Because I’m

not particularly artistic, it takes some effort. When I arrive with the food, my hosts unceremoniously dump it into disposable aluminum containers, wash my dishes and put them aside.

I hope I don’t sound picky, but even when I have asked that the items be served in the dishes I brought, the hosts say, “Oh, this is easier.”

New approach to angioplasty involves radial artery in wrist Dear Doctor K: I am scheduled to have an angioplasty next week. The doctor plans to insert the catheter through my wrist. Is there some advantage to doing it through the wrist rather than the thigh?

Dear Reader: Angioplasty is a procedure used to open a narrowed or blocked artery. Angioplasties are usually done to open up blocked coronary arteries – the blood vessels that provide blood to the heart muscle.

The blocked coronary arteries lie deep within the chest. An angioplasty is able to open the blockage without opening the chest. How? By taking advantage of how the body’s blood supply is built.

The heart pumps blood around the body through multiple arteries. Some arteries carry blood from the heart to the legs, and other arteries go from the heart to the arms. Any artery that carries blood from the heart to the leg or arm is also a highway leading from the leg or arm back to the heart.

During the procedure, a doctor inserts a thin tube called a catheter into a blood vessel.

He or she gently maneuvers

The tip of the catheter is gently guided up the “highway” from the leg or arm to the heart. Then the tip of the catheter is pushed into the blocked coronary artery.

A balloon that is part of the catheter is inflated to open the artery.

Usually a tiny wire mesh stent is placed to keep the artery open.

Most doctors in the United States begin angioplasty at the femoral artery, the large blood vessel at the top of the thigh. But a growing number of doctors are beginning angioplasty through the radial artery in the wrist.

The radial artery is narrower than the femoral artery, which makes it harder to get the catheter inside. However, the radial artery lies right below the skin, whereas the femoral artery is deep beneath the skin. In some people, the femoral artery can be

hard to reach.

Once a catheter successfully enters the radial artery, the fact that this artery is narrower becomes an advantage. When an angioplasty is done through the larger femoral artery, that artery tends to bleed after the catheter is pulled out of the body.

You have to lie in bed for several hours with a weight pressing down on the artery.

In contrast, immediately after a radial artery angioplasty, people are able to get up and walk around. They can often go home the same day and resume normal activities by the next day.

Radial angioplasties have been slow to catch on. That may be because most doctors in the U.S. were trained in the femoral approach. The radial artery is smaller and has more twists and turns, and advancing a catheter through it requires practice. But once doctors gain experience with the wrist approach, they are likely to use it more often.

Bullies should not be paddled Dr. Wallace: My 7-yearold son has been bullied by two boys his age ever since school started.

It has reached a point that he doesn’t want to go to school anymore.

I contacted the school twice by telephone, but the harassment (name calling, hitting, threatening to hurt) continues.

I went to school yesterday and talked to the principal and told her the bullying of my son has got to stop immediately. She said that there are 542 students that attend the school and that she can’t be everywhere at the same time and that she does the best that she can when she sees bullying happening.

It’s obvious that the bullies who are harassing my son will continue their unacceptable behavior. Why can’t the principal call these bullies into her office and paddle their rear ends?

That would put an end to this very bad situation.

Help! I want this bullying stopped immediately. – Mother, Anaheim, California Dear Mother: Paddling the bullies is not the school’s responsibility, but putting an immediate end to bullying is. I’m amazed that the principal said that she does the best that she can when she witnesses a bully in action.

The principal should have had a parent-student conference in her office with the bully’s parents present. After getting all of the facts, she should have demanded that the parents discipline their children and informed them that if the bullying continues, or even threatens to continue, their children will be suspended or even expelled from the school.

You must find out how to have your complaint heard. Bullying is a serious school problem, and it must be stopped. If a principal doesn’t have the ability to stop bullying, he or she should be replaced by a principal who will be responsible for all aspects of a child’s educational experience.

Every child deserves to attend school in peace and to be taught by competent, compassionate and dedicated educators!

Dr. Wallace: Some parents are stupid; it’s no wonder we have a lot of teens out of control!

My 16-year-old daughter has a firm weekend curfew and is constantly trying to get it changed to allow her to come home at a later time. “No way, Jose.” Her whining started because a new girlfriend is allowed to set her own curfew.

CELEBRITY CIPHER

Augie Boehm has spent his life playing bridge and the piano. He describes it in the enjoyable “Big Deal” (Bridge World Books).

Boehm writes about the players he knew, some of the famous cheating scandals and the musical shows with bridge themes that he has appeared in and helped to write. He gives the lyrics to some songs, including my favorite, “Overbidder” by Don Simmons, which you sing to the music for “Old Man River.” He also reprints some of his articles, many of which appeared in The Bridge World magazine.

When young, the author played bridge at a Manhattan club known as The Bucket, where he started a lifelong partnership with Richard Margolis, who became a rabbi and is also an excellent player.

Margolis found a great bid in this deal from the final day of the 1999 Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams in Boston.

Look at the North hand and the auction. What would you have bid over West’s five diamonds, which showed slam interest in hearts?

It looks obvious to raise to six diamonds, or perhaps even jump to seven diamonds, hoping to bounce your opponents into a hopeless grand slam. Margolis did better – he bid six clubs. East doubled, North ran to six diamonds, and West doubled that. But the contract was unbeatable! Boehm drew the missing trump and crossruffed home.

Why bid six clubs? Because if the opponents had gone to six hearts, South would have led the club nine, a suit-preference signal for spades. The defense would have gone: club to the ace, spade ruff and club ruff for down two.
