By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Starting in January, patrol officers will switch from traditional eight-hour shifts to a combination of 10-hour and eight-hour shifts.

Village trustees approved the move Monday.

North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco said the new arrangement will provide several benefits.

“It helps with flexibility on different staffing issues,” Bosco said. “It provides higher staffing levels without increasing the number of officers.”

The move also is expected to save money, he said.

North Aurora police Chief David Summer has estimated the village will see an annual savings of up to 10 percent in extra pay, overtime, court time and holiday pay.

Under the new system, patrol officers will choose either 10-hour shifts or eighthour shifts, based on seniority.

Patrol sergeants still would work 8-hour shifts and their schedules would remain the same.

“We’re going to try it to see what happens,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said. “It allows them to do some things on longer shifts that they couldn’t do in eighthour shifts. They can be more efficient.”

Village trustees also approved a contract modification agreement between the village and the Metropolitan Alliance Of Police, North Aurora Police Chapter 633.

The contract runs through May 31, 2015.

Workshop helps pinpoint city’s future housing needs

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles resident Larry Kelley said when it comes to housing, he’d like to see more senior housing that’s close to amenities that seniors may need to use, such as a grocery store that accepts food stamps and a shuttle service.

His input was part of a Homes for a Changing Region community workshop held Wednesday, where about a dozen people in attendance voiced their opinions about what housing should look like in St. Charles in the next 20 to 30 years.

The workshop is helping identify housing needs in Geneva, Batavia and North Aurora, as well. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s Local Technical Assistance program, in partnership with the Metropolitan Planning Council, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and

Kane County, are providing the housing planning service to each municipality free of charge.

After learning some statistics about St. Charles’ current housing market, attendees broke into small groups to pinpoint key development areas on maps. One map focused on the entire city and another focused on the Route 38 and Randall Road intersection.

These are the big parcels out there for development,” said city planner Matthew O’Rourke about the Route 38 and Randall Road intersection. “There is going to be development pressure on those in the future. It’s something we really wanted to focus on.”

Each group shared similar ideas for developing that intersection. Cindy Holler, who chairs the St. Charles Housing Commission, said her group wanted to see a “continuum of care” type of facility that would cater to individuals older than 55, who need assist-

ed living and those who need nursing home care, much like The Holmstad in Batavia.

King Harris, senior fellow with the Metropolitan Planning Council, urged attendees to think about ways to use the Fox River as a way to draw in younger people so housing doesn’t become lopsided in the next 20 to 30 years.

“The riverfront can be an interesting way to attract young people who want to go boating, biking and hiking,” he said. “The river’s worth really thinking through carefully.”

Lions Club’s Turkey Spin kicks off Friday SOUTH ELGIN – The South Elgin Lions Club’s Annual Turkey Spin will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday.

The doors open at 6 p.m., and the first spin is at 7 p.m.

Among the items to be raffled are turkeys, spiral ham, roasts, pork loins and steaks. There will be two special raffles for steak bundles, and one “lucky loser” will receive the loser’s basket, which includes a complete Thanksgiving dinner.

Tickets for each spin costs $1 each and are purchased throughout the entire evening.

Welcome club launches new year GENEVA – The Welcome Club of the Fox Valley has launched another club year.

The club is open to women who are interested in making connections, engaging in social activities and participating in volunteer/philanthropic opportunities. Activity groups

Quinn signs same-sex marriage legislation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Gov. Pat Quinn on Wednesday signed legislation that will make Illinois the 16th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriages.

In a news release issued at www.illinois.gov, Quinn called the new law “an epic victory for equal rights in America.”

“Illinois is moving forward,” Quinn said. “We are a model for our country. If the Land of Lincoln can achieve marriage equality, so can every other state in the nation.”

The law takes effect June 1, 2014.

Earlier this month, the state House voted 61-54 to approve Senate Bill 10, known as the Religious Freedom and

Marriage Fairness Act. The measure moved to the Senate, which voted 34-21 in favor of it, sending the bill to the governor.

Most local lawmakers had voted against the measure, including State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia; State Rep. Robert Pritchard, R-Hinckley; and State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville.

State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, voted in favor of the bill. State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, was absent.

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, and State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, both voted against the bill when it went back to the Senate. State Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, voted yes.

Jane was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on June 27, 1928, to Clem and Cecilia Host. She attended Waukesha High School and St. Mary School of Nursing.

Jane (Nina) is survived by Kenneth Jordan, her husband of 62 years; and all seven of her JMJ children, Jennifer (Tom) Weber, Jeff (JoEllen) Jordan, Joan (John) Henriksen, Jean (Don) Whiteside, Janet (Rob) Coleman, Julie (Duncan) MacNeil and John Jordan. She has 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many loving friends and family.

AMOS SMITH JR. Died: Nov. 19, 2013; in Batavia BATAVIA – Amos Smith Jr., 61, of Batavia, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, surrounded by his loving family at home.

He retired from Caterpillar after 30 years of service and was a very proud member of Local 145. Amos was happiest when he was fishing “in the hole” on the Fox River with all of his grandchildren. He spent

most of his time baiting their hooks, but the look on their faces when they caught a fish made it all worth it. PaPa gave them many great memories. Amos loved to cook. Summers were spent eating his excellent barbecued ribs covered with his special sauce. Holiday dinners were never complete without his fried turkeys cooked to perfection. He will be greatly missed.

Amos is survived by his wife of 41 years, Pamela (Welander) Smith; his children, Tina Smith, Kristal Smith, Benji (Danya) Smith, Richard Smith, Shaquille Smith and Desiree Smith; his loving grandchildren, Quentinn, Calista and Elijah Smith and Sophia-Grace Smith; his father, Amos Smith Sr.; sisters, Regina Shepard, Linda Lee and Cynthia Smith; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Smith; sister, Mary (Smith) Butler; three sisters

in infancy; and his favorite brotherin-law, Lloyd Shepard.

Paramount Theatre collecting supplies for tornado relief KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Paramount Theatre, at 23 E. Galena Boulevard in downtown Aurora, is collecting items to deliver to those who were impacted

by Sunday’s tornadoes.

Theater officials are asking those attending this week’s final performances of “Miss Saigon” to bring at least one item to donate. Donation boxes will be set up in the Paramount Theatre’s Grand Lobby.

Those not attending a show who would like to donate an item can stop by and leave their donation in the lobby.

Until 6 p.m., there is 15-min-

ute parking in front of the theatre.

Collection will take place through Sunday. Collection hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m.

ST. CHARLES – Robin Reed has done her best to ensure the wares on sale at this weekend’s Christmas on the Fox Art and Craft Show are handmade by the vendor.

In addition to asking potential exhibitors for photographs of their work, she said, she also requires them to submit pictures of work in progress or their messy workspace – something that anybody who makes items would have.

Reed – the owner and founder of the show’s producer, Art of the Heartland Inc. – said the handmade element is important to her because it goes back to why she started the event.

She wanted to create an outlet for people like her – a mother of five who couldn’t afford to have her own store – to sell their goods, she said.

Plus, Reed said, it gives shoppers a chance to find unique items.

“I don’t want somebody to come to my show and a week later see the same thing at Michael’s,” she said.

Although Christmas on the Fox is usually held the weekend after Thanksgiving, Reed said it was moved to this Saturday and Sunday because it otherwise would conflict with the Kane County Flea Market next weekend.

Set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, the event will feature about 84 booths in the Prairie Events Center at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 Randall Road, St. Charles.

Cadence Health plans merger with Rockford Health

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Cadence Health and Rockford Health System on Wednesday announced a merger between the two health systems.

Cadence Health President and Chief Executive Director Mike Vivoda said the merger would offer access to care in more than 40 locations including Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Rockford Memorial Hospital and Van Matre HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Rockford.

“It is a multiregional health system with hundreds of doctors who are aligned with this health system,” Vivoda said. “This network of 40 different health care locations throughout the entire geography is what we’re really focused on, bringing high-quality, cost-effective health care closer to where people live and work.”

Cadence recently opened a facility in Aurora that offers primary care, convenient care and rehabilitation services as well as occupational health.

“You will see us, as a combined health system, continue to develop ambulatory sites like that,” Vivoda said.

“The expansion and growth at Delnor post-merger with CDH is kind of proof positive of what the expectations should be for this new combined health system.”

Cadence Health was formed in March 2011 as a

result of the merger between Central DuPage Health System in Winfield and Delnor Community Health System in Geneva.

One of Cadence’s latest projects is the Cadence Cancer Center at Delnor Hospital, which opened in September.

“It was on Delnor’s strategic plan for quite some time,” Vivoda said. “The combination with CDH accelerated the development of that. The Aurora medical office building is another example of our commitment. We have also developed simulation labs at both CDH and Delnor hospitals as a result of not only the merger, but also philanthropic support.”

The merger between Cadence Health and Rockford Health System is subject to approval by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board.

Vivoda said he expects the merger to be complete in the spring after state approval.

Vivoda didn’t rule out the possibility of Cadence being involved in more mergers in the future.

“We are still an organization posed for additional growth,” he said. “We don’t believe in mergers for the sake of mergers. If they are like opportunities with like-minded organizations that help expand and enhance our desire to be a locally governed, locally managed health system in the west and northwest, the answer would be ‘yes.’ But there is nothing imminent to chat about now.”

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge declined to reduce the $1 million bond for a 45-year-old former St. Charles teacher accused of having and distributing child pornography.

Sycamore resident Jerome McCauley, and his defense attorney Jerome Jack Donahue, McCauley asked presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert to reduce McCauley’s bond to $150,000. His mother could have posted the $15,000 necessary for his release while the case is pending.

McCauley was charged Oct. 28 for allegedly having between 1,000 and 1,500 imag-

es and five to 10 videos of child pornography, some showing 12-year-old girls, according to court records. He previously worked as a seventh-grade teacher and volleyball coach at Wredling Middle School in St. Charles School District 303.

McCauley would have lived with his mother in Bloomington if the bond had been reduced, First Assistant State’s Attorney Duke Harris said. But Harris argued that McCauley presented a flight risk because he doesn’t have a job or own real estate in the community.

McCauley has no criminal history.

If convicted of the most serious charge he faces, McCauley would be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison. Probation is not an option. His next court date is Dec. 5.

OPINIONS Pranking done ‘old school’ in ’13 It’s that time of year when high school seniors everywhere are stressing about college applications, so it would be appropriate – and cliché – if I wrote an article about my experiences.

I’ll come right out and say that I’m still in the I-don’thave-anything-figured-out stage. This whole college thing is really hard. At first, I thought it was important to choose a school that I really liked. Then I learned it was about which school offers the best programs. I later found myself Mapquesting how far away each school is. But in the end, even with all these other factors, it is still somehow about my true happiness.

As the youngest of three, I knew coming into my search that choosing a college is no joking matter. It is, after all, the rest of my life we’re talking about. But to my parents, apparently it can be fun and games.

A couple of weeks ago I found a package addressed to me on our front porch.

I thought it was strange, because it was too early for Christmas, too late for my May birthday, and I was pretty sure I hadn’t ordered anything online. Then I saw the return address. It was from the small college my dad went to in the middle of West Virginia. Inside was a letter saying that the alumni association was actively seeking high-achieving legacies just like me, so please consider our college while wearing this free sweatshirt.

While a sweatshirt may seem like no big deal to most people, I was freaking out. I have a long-standing joke with my family that I will attend the first college that sends me a free sweatshirt. Sure, some

I stood in our kitchen with my mom for a solid 15 minutes trying to wrap my head around the fact that this real college had really sent me a real sweatshirt. Needless to say, I was excited. I waited eagerly until my dad came home from work and showed him the letter and my new spirit wear while sharing my surprise with his.

Turns out all of it was a lie.

Last week, I received another package that looked awfully similar, though this time it was from the small Pittsburgh college my mom attended.

Coincidentally, they, too, were impressed with my high school record and wanted to express their interest in the form of a complimentary sweatshirt.

This time, I put two and two together, and learned that this spirit wear came not from any alumni association or admissions office, but from the biggest college recruiters of all: my parents. Nicely played, Mom and Dad. If there are any admissions counselors reading this, the bet is still on. I will gladly attend your college or university, as long as you provide the fine outerwear.

Banks aren’t the bad guys

By CHARLES LANE The Washington Post WASHINGTON – Economic historians debate the causes of the Great Depression – from the gold standard to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act – but few assign much blame to criminal fraud.

People saw it differently at the time. When bank failures crippled Chicago in 1933, local prosecutors hunted for guilty parties. They indicted hotel and insurance magnate Ernest Stevens for fraud and embezzlement in connection with his company’s defaulted bonds. He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years.

The Illinois Supreme Court unanimously overturned the conviction a year later, finding that the state had criminalized what was really desperate but non-felonious financial juggling. “In this whole record, there is not a scintilla of evidence of any concealment or fraud attempted,” the court wrote.

Alas, the stress had already proved too much for Stevens’ co-defendants, his father and brother: The former suffered a stroke; the latter committed suicide.

The story should be a cautionary tale for those who today demand that more top bankers go to jail for the crimes that purportedly caused the Great Recession.

Obviously, the government should pursue solid cases of wrongdoing. Yet it is also true, as Ernest Stevens’ son, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, told The New York Times Magazine in 2007, that “the criminal justice system can misfire sometimes.”

Appropriate prosecutorial discretion informed the Obama administration’s approach to allegations of criminal fraud in the trade of mortgage-backed securities, the collapse of which triggered global panic.

As Lanny Breuer, then the chief of the Justice Department’s criminal division,

explained in an interview with PBS’ “Frontline” last year, it’s one thing to say, in hindsight, that bankers knowingly sold their victims shoddy securities and quite another to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, “that you had the specific intent to defraud” and “that the counterparty, the other side of the transaction, relied on your misrepresentation.”

Having reviewed the facts, Breuer concluded not only that he couldn’t bring many criminal fraud cases but also that illegal conduct did not cause the crash.

The real scandal is the counterproductive behavior that was perfectly legal: Americans’ shared, erroneous belief in ever-rising housing prices and corresponding mania to profit from them.

“People in Wall Street, and throughout, thought that there was no going down in the market. Everybody was going to get rich,” Breuer told “Frontline.”

Eddie Caruso, who owns Eddie Caruso Hair Salon with Gus Donzelli, said they recently took over the East Side Pub & Grill, 2400 E.

Main St., where they plan to open A’Salute, which is an Italian word for “cheers,” Caruso said.

“It’s going to be a restaurant and bar,” he said. “We’re calling it a lounge and grill.”

Caruso said he’s not new to the restaurant industry, as he was in the business years ago. He said that he and Donzelli were looking for a new business venture.

The lounge will be just a few doors down from Eddie Caruso Hair Salon, which also is in the Foxboro Plaza.

Caruso said they’re in the process of refining the drink and food menus.

He said the food menu will feature small sandwiches called “trios,” which are served in threes. He said they’ll have trios such as filet sliders, Angus beef, home-

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Officials for Batavia Enterprises on Wednesday said they plan to move ahead with a City Council proposal to give the company $1.14 million in financial assistance to help in the construction of a new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia.

“There are details that have to be worked out, but we are planning on moving forward,” Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey said. “Our entire approach from the beginning was to deliver to Batavia a new building and a new store that everybody could be proud of.”

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting recommended giving Batavia Enterprises $850,000 along with rebating up to $293,000 of incremental sales tax from the new store. The recommendation will go to the full City Council.

Vasilion, who is an architect, recused himself from the discussion because Batavia Enterprises is one of his clients.

The project is in a tax increment financing district.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

The new store is expected to generate $1.4 million in additional sales tax and

property taxes over the next 12 years. Batavia Enterprises had been seeking $1.5 million in financial assistance.

Total project costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated to reach about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of $520,250.

Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

In addition, a large storm drain line runs through the city-owned portion of the property. The line acts as an overflow route from the southern tip of Depot Pond to a point in the Fox River just north of the city of Batavia’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency garage.

Dempsey said the line needs to be moved at a cost of $300,000.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Kane County seeks participants for program

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County has yet to reach its enrollment goal for a statewide program that aims to train individuals for manufacturing jobs, but staff said Wednesday it is off to a great start.

Staff shared the update on the Accelerated Training for Illinois Manufacturing Program during the Kane County Jobs Committee.

It aims to address the gap between job seekers’ skills and

the skills needed for manufacturing, specifically in the occupations of CNC operators, welders, industrial machinery mechanics and electronic repairers/robotics technicians.

Kane County aims to provide training to about 35 people over 18 months. It is marketing the program through Illinois workNet Centers and in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

As of mid-November, 10 individuals – including residents from Maple Park and St.

Charles – had enrolled and are expected to begin their training soon.

Of the participants, half are entering the manufacturing field for the first time, while the others have experience but lack the required credentials to secure full-time, permanent employment.

Six employers also have agreed to participate in the program by providing the trainees with work-based learning opportunities. The employers also will consider hiring the participants.

The employer partners located in the Tri-Cities are Burgess-Norton Manufacturing in Geneva, Bison Gear in St. Charles, Smith & Richardson in Geneva and Olcott Plastics in St. Charles.

The county hopes to have 15 employer partners.

Geneva House Tour a holiday tradition

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Donna Neiler of LaFox says she’s looking forward to kicking off the Christmas season with one of her favorite traditions – attending the Geneva House Tour.

This will be the 33rd year she has attended the event.

She said she attended her first Geneva House Tour in 1981, which since has led her to attend other house tours throughout the country and even overseas. But Geneva’s tour always has been her favorite, she said, especially when it comes to the holiday decorations.

“They’ve done it to the nines,” she said. “It really kind of kicks off the holiday season for a lot of people.”

Five homes will be featured in this year’s Geneva House Tour, which is a self-guided tour that goes from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

Homes along the tour include an 1868 Victorian built by actor and inventor John Bowman Atwater, which features a three-story octagonal wing.

Various local businesses, including The Little Traveler, CIRCA and The Mossy Twig, helped decorate the homes this year.

Neiler said she prefers to attend the house tour on Fridays, and she and a group of friends will make a day of it. She said one friend travels from downstate Illinois while another travels from Chicago to attend the house tour. They gather at Neiler’s home, eat cookies, have beverages and then plot out the order of homes they plan to visit. They visit a few homes before lunch, which is usually at Chianti’s in Geneva.

there have been several homes that have resonated with her – usually the older homes.

“There’s some fantastic architecture in this area – a big diversity of periods,” she said.

“I remember almost every one distinctively. There’s always something striking in every home.”

Neiler said it’s difficult to choose just one favorite, but she loves to see all the homeowners’ personal touches each year.

“You appreciate the effort someone puts into it,” she said.

“To pick a favorite is tough.”

She said when she started going on the Geneva House Tour in 1981, the house tour initially was organized by the

Geneva Garden Club. She said even after the Geneva Chamber of Commerce started organizing it, the house tour has stayed very much the same through the years.

She said house walkers should dress for the weather and prepare to wait in some long lines to tour the homes.

“One year, it was so cold.

Another year, we were in light jackets,” she said. “We’ve trudged our way through snow.

Most times, Mother Nature’s not too bad, but I always have

extra gloves.”

Geneva House Tour tickets are $30 and include a holiday tea. Proceeds are used to decorate the city of Geneva for the holiday season. Tickets can be purchased at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, 8 S. Fox Valley Snowdrifters Ski Club members enjoy a blue bird day – a sunny day after an overnight snowfall – on the slopes of Heavenly Resort in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. club as it is a ski club,” said Aurora resident Joe Hopp, the club’s current president.

In addition to ski-related outings, Hopp said the club engages in off-season social excursions as well, which has included a Metra pub crawl; golf outings; canoe trips along the Fox River; and visits to the Ravinia in Highland Park and Aurora’s Paramount Theatre and RiverEdge Park.

The skiing, however, remains the heart of the Snowdrifters club, which specifically focuses on Western U.S. and European ski and snowboarding trips and comprises all levels of ski enthusiasts, from beginners to experts, as well as those who solely take part in the social and travel components of the club.

Because the club is a part of the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council, a nonprofit organization that supports 70 area ski and snowboard clubs across the Chicago metropolitan area and its neighboring states, it receives discounted group rates for ski trips.

“It’s so much more economical when you get the buy-

ing power of CMSC; the trips become affordable,” Hopp said, adding that the club also allows members to pay for its snow-centric travels through installments payed throughout the year.

Through the club, Hopp has visited about 14 ski resorts world-wide.

“I love to travel, and it has afforded me the opportunity to travel throughout the continental U.S. and also overseas,” Hopp said.

St. Charles resident Frank Hodowal joined the club with his wife in 1990 after moving to the area from Colorado, where he skied regularly.

Hodowal, a retiree, has held nearly every club title, but currently serves as the club’s trip chairman, volunteering his time to orchestrating the club’s various trip itineraries.

Being a club member for about two decades, Hodowal said he has traveled to nearly every ski resort in the U.S., but his favorite ski trip was to Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites.

the club has yet to experience, while also returning to club favorites once about every five years, he said.

“It’s like playing at a golf course,” Hodowal said. “You don’t want to play the same one over and over again.”

For January, Hodowal has planned a weekend getaway to Marquette Mountain in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula ($240) and a week-long trip to Whistler in British Columbia, Canada ($1,440).

Those interested in enrolling for a trip must be members first. Membership to the club costs $30 annually, and $25 for advanced registration after a year of membership.

Despite the club’s longevity, this year’s trip sign-up has seemed “sluggish,” Hodowal said. “I don’t know if it’s the

economy and people are worried about their jobs or what, but it has been a bit slower than usual.”

Membership also has been taking a hit.

“The club has gotten a little older,” Hodowal said.

“Everyone is suffering with membership right now. That is typical of the different ski clubs in the area.”

Schrauth said he hopes the club he created will continue and prosper, but it needs more active and younger members to flourish.

Hodowal agreed.

“I just want people to know that we exist out here,” Hodowal said. “There are a lot of skiers around the Fox Valley area, but a lot of people don’t even know about the ski club.”

The first time Fox Valley Snowdrifters Ski Club member Pam Murray went skiing was 13 years ago.

“It was so exciting and exhilarating; I loved it,” Murray, a St. Charles resident, said of the experience. “And then, when I got home, I found out I had cancer.”

It was her newfound affection for the wintry pastime that proved to be the incentive needed to defeat the disease, she said.

“I decided, ‘that’s it! I’m getting better, because I am going to learn to ski,’” she said.

Once she beat cancer, and with “an inch of hair on her head” after a strong regiment of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, she joined the Snowdrifters Ski Club to do just that. “[The club] has been a big part of my life since,” Murray said. “Things that I would never ever have done on my own, I did with the ski club. I can’t say my life would have been as full having not joined.”

Murray is just one of nearly 100 Snowdrifters Ski Club members from around the area, who have found camaraderie through a common interest in the outdoors – specifically skiing.

“These people are like my family,” she said, gesturing to about 25 members who attended one of its recent bi-weekly club meetings at Old Towne Pub and Eatery in Geneva.

The club was founded in 1961. Its last-remaining charter member, Batavia-resident Bill Schrauth, said he started it when he was 28 years old with the help of “six to 12 people,” simply because they “liked to ski.”

“Between water skiing and snow skiing, it’s about all I ever did,” Schrauth said. “I never would have left the area if it weren’t for snow skiing.”

Over the course of the club’s 52-year run, Schrauth has traveled all over the world and met myriad walks of life.

Though a bachelor himself, he said, he has also witnessed the meeting and marriage of more than 30 couples in the club.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com With Thanksgiving right around the corner, local musician Dave Ramont wanted to do something to help the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry with its efforts.

Ramont, who was born and raised in St. Charles, will perform with The Slippery People from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at Kiss The Sky record store, 180 W. First St., Batavia.

Admission is $5, with all the proceeds going to the pantry.

Those who come to the show are also asked to bring food donations for the pantry.

reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Ramont about his music and the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: I understand you are working on a new CD. You previously released several albums on your own along with the band Dick Smith, which you co-founded.

Dave Ramont: I’ll just put it on under my own name, but I will have a lot of other people playing on it with me. I’m going to be working on that this winter. I’ve got a lot of new songs written.

ES: Who else will be on the album?

DR: I’m really, really fortunate to have some of the best in demand guys from around Chicago who play with me.

Gerald Dowd, he is a Chicago drummer who plays with Robbie Fulks and lots and lots of people.

Dave Nelson, he lives out here in Geneva. He’s a great slide guitar player and he’s a

great guy. We do a lot of duo stuff, Dave and I. Scott Stevenson, who is from out here but now plays in Downers Grove, he plays just a killer piano and accordion.

And all those guys I mentioned are also in Dick Smith.

So, those guys will play on this record and a few other local folk; the usual suspects, I guess.

ES: Would you call yourself an Americana artist?

DR: Yes, I would say so.

Roots, Americana. There’s a little country in there; a little folk in there; a little rock in there, but you just wonder what to call it.

ES: Who are some of your influences?

DR: Tom Waits and Joe Henry; guys like that I really like now because of their attention to lyrics. I’m really a lyric guy.

I love being able to read people’s lyrics and have them tell a story without even hear-

ing the song. And then you wrap a melody around it, and it’s just an added bonus.

ES: Do you think that is why Americana music is back in the forefront? In the past few years, it seems like there has been a resurgence of interest in roots music.

DR: I don’t know. Young people just seem to be getting back to the instrumentation of it – the acoustic guitars and the banjos and mandolins.

I don’t know why that is.

But it seems to be the trend.

Now I keep waiting for a backlash.

In a few years from now is everybody going to be saying, ‘oh, jeez, he plays a banjo, that’s so yesterday.’ That’s what I play in the band Dick Smith, a banjo.

ES: Your music has gotten some critical acclaim.

DR: Yeah, I’ve always had a lot of good press. When I send public radio and college radio stations something new,

they always seem happy and willing to play stuff.

It’s just enough to string you along and keep you wanting to make another record, I guess.

ES: What should people expect from this new CD? DR : I guess it’s the same style of music, in the Americana vein and all. On my last CD, which was actually a double record, I sort of labored over it for probably well over a year, recording it piece by piece.

For this one, I just plan to get everybody in a room and just really bash the album out in a few days. I want to get a lot more of a live, guys-in-aroom-playing vibe than maybe I had on the last one.

That’s how we kind of record the Dick Smith stuff, where you can actually see the guys you are playing with instead of piling on lots of overdubs, which I have been guilty of in the past.

St. Charles North senior Ashley England shifted from cross country to bowling season last week.

Yes, she realizes that’s quite the unorthodox combo.

Just let her explain.

“If I don’t have anything to do, I would be lost,” England said.

Closing her career with an all-state, top-25 finish at the Class 3A state meet topped England’s itinerary earlier this month. A blazing, urgent kick over the last quarter-mile allowed her to do even better, placing 11th in a personal-record 17:20 to cap her senior season as Kane County Chronicle Girls Runner of the Year.

“She always is looking to improve herself, so she’s one of those kids,” North Stars coach Shari Hayes said. “She never believes in slowing down. She never believes in, ‘Oh, this is too hard.’ She’s always like” ... help me improve and be a better runner.

England joined the cross country team as a freshman in 2010 with the motive of many fellow athletes state and nationwide. She wanted to amp her conditioning for a different sport later in the school year. For England, a former Strikers Fox Valley midfielder, it was soccer.

A funny thing happened on the way to the pitch, though: England embraced running and the tried-andtrue cross country credo that “our sport is your sport’s punishment.” She ascended from North’s fourth runner at state in 2010 to second in 2011 before leading the pack each of the past two Novembers.

There have been even more overtures since the Nov. 9 state meet, when England shaved nine seconds from her previous PR, established at state last season.

“It occurred to me after

the fact, but really when I was running, I wasn’t necessarily running for time, I was just running to make all-state and to get that medal,” England said.

England and classmate Kaylee Wessel were part of four state-bound North teams under Hayes. Both will testify to England’s tremendous focus in that span.

If she’s lagging behind her target time in a workout – even if excessive winds or wet terrain present obstacles – England transforms into a harsh self-critic.

One of the only ostensible times she slipped off her

pace actually paved the way to her prep bowling career.

England still remembers missing her bus on the Monday after her freshman cross country season ended, encountering friend and kegler Ashley Montgomery and going from there.

St. Charles Bowl typically houses a more laid-back England. She’s admittedly dialed in every time she runs, so don’t take anything as an affront, younger teammates.

“I don’t know. It’s hard to explain what I do and why I do it, because it’s just, I love what I do,” England said.

“It’s hard to explain to them why exactly I’m doing it, but once they see kind of the outcome, then it’s easier for them to understand.”

England finished as a narrow runner-up to Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer at the Upstate Eight Conference River Division meet, won the Wheaton North Regional and took fourth at the Waubonsie Valley Sectional.

She’s eager to compete collegiately beginning next fall, and just as ready to roll a few frames should things get dull.

“You remember a few things in your life, you know. There’s some special moments in your life,” DiDomenico said. “And this is obviously going to be one of them.” DiDomenico plans to remain as a track assistant during the spring.

A crowning cross country achievement and last weekend’s campus visit to Lipscomb University suggest the beginning of the end of Batavia senior Mitch Zabka’s high school experience.

The accomplished runner still must walk during the graduation procession, and to do that, Zabka must pass the school’s requisite public speaking course.

He’s in luck.

The Kane County Chronicle Boys Runner of the Year got a jump on one of next semester’s classes by often rallying the Bulldogs en route to the program’s first team berth in the Class 3A state meet.

“I don’t really yell,” Zabka said. “I just get the point across, really, and keep on motivating everyone.”

Batavia aspired to treat outgoing coach Mike DiDomenico to the Bulldogs’ most elusive team achievement after falling just short at sectionals in 2011.

Touting depth and a strong senior class this fall, Batavia came through by

bus ride home.

“It’s just the dedication that we’ve shown throughout all four years,” Zabka said. “It might not have really showed, I would say, the first two years, but junior year when we realized we could do something special, we knew that’s what we wanted to do. Just do our best. And everyone wanted to keep improving. So that’s what helped us get there.”

Zabka’s speeches provided a semi-regular soundtrack. Fellow senior co-captain and friend Chris Orlow also did some orating when DiDomenico yielded the floor.

Orlow, who also is considering Lipscomb, an NCAA Division I school in Nashville, Tenn., might be on his pal’s heels again soon.

“He was a lot better than me in middle school,” Orlow said, “and then I think freshman year I caught up to him and we’ve been competing ever since, going for it, pushing each other.”

This season, the duo helped give the program something to talk about for years to come.

“It felt like we knocked that door down for future teams,” Zabka said.

“I’m really excited to see what will happen at state for us,” sophomore Annie Gosselin said. “I think we’ll do really, really well.”

Gosselin (ninth, 100 backstroke) and Hart (11th, 100 freestyle) advanced from prelims to consolation finals last season, and are the de facto elder stateswomen of a team loaded with freshmen and sophomores.

“We can help explain to them – the freshmen, the newbies – what it’s like and everything,” Hart said. “And we’re a lot closer of a team this year, and we kind of know what the flow is now.”

Schalz appeals to the pair’s valuable experience, but also notes the Beads lack “that superstar that you hitch your wagon to and everyone kind of climbs on her back and goes.”

“It’s certainly different,” Schalz said, “because your superstar tends to get all the publicity, but then they tend to get all the pressure, too.”

These days, the expectations remain, but the entire team scrambles to share fulfilling them.

Rosary claimed four successive state titles from 2006 to 2009 and finished third in 2010 and 2011 before last season’s relative struggles. Having a roster with so few ties to the dynasty days eventually will help the program start anew, the thinking goes.

“You know, it’s funny,” Schalz said. “Typically, what I sweat the most is the relay exchange. That’s the one thing that if you’re having a great meet, you have a couple bad relay exchanges, things [start to unravel]. ... You just never know until you get that first swim out of the way.”

“We were able to kind of sandwich her in and have the guards cover the perimeter,” Chargers coach Mark Fitzgerald said. “It really held her in check, because

she’s a quality ballplayer.

Then we had enough scoring in us to go on top.”

Gabi Alfaro (10 points) and Alex Horton (nine) paced the 3-0 Chargers, who held Plano to just three points in the fourth quarter.

“Still a lot left to do and learn,” Fitzgerald said, “but it went well.”

Elsewhere in Somonauk tournament action, Wheaton Academy won its second straight game with a 68-47 victory against Serena.

Molly Thorson and Abi Olson had 14 points apiece for the Warriors, while Marissa Gagliano added 11 points. Wheaton Academy led, 24-8, after the opening

AURORA – Rosary’s 400yard freestyle relay missed the qualifying cut for Friday’s girls swimming state meet preliminaries by sixth-tenths of a second.

Naturally, such a close call at the end of an otherwise sparkling Neuqua Valley Sectional threatened to sink the Beads’ mood. Then athletes remembered pretty much everyone would be jumping into the New Trier pool, anyway.

Built on college-bound superstars in past seasons, Rosary knows its bid to return to the podium after tying for 34th in the 2012 team race hinges on the whole.

“That we had a lot more people qualify kind of patched over that hole of not having that relay,” junior Erin Hart, a St. Charles resident, said.

“I think that if we all swim really well, and if we all do what I know we can all do, that we’ll be able to place really high at state this year.”

Tying Naperville North for second place at sectionals – four points behind winner Naperville Central – Rosary advanced entries in every event but diving, the 500 freestyle and the 400 free relay.

In a switch from last fall, Beads coach Bill Schalz shifted the team’s taper so it would fully take effect for this week’s workouts.

Rams’ playmakers among NFL’s best-kept secrets Hub Arkush

Get ready, Bears fans. You’re about to meet some of the best-kept secrets in the NFL. The Bears will face the St. Louis Rams in Week 12, and while the sum of its parts is a pedestrian 4-6 record, there are some young studs on this ballclub who can do some real damage.

On paper, this looks like a team the Bears should be able to handle. That’s what the Indianapolis Colts thought two weeks ago before the Rams stormed into Indianapolis and blew them off the field by a 38-8 margin.

There are other danger signs.

This will be only the second game the Bears have played indoors this year. Their first was in Detroit, where they played their worst game of the season, falling 40-32.

The Rams will be the second team

the Bears have faced this year coming off a bye. The Lions came into Chicago for their second meeting after their weekend off and knocked off the Bears, 21-19.

Let’s meet Tavon Austin. The Rams traded up eight spots in the first round of this year’s draft to take the 5-foot-8-inch, 176-pound mighty mite out of West Virginia, who, until the Colts game, appeared to be just kind of finding his way. In Indianapolis, he caught 57- and 81-yard touchdowns, and returned four punts for 145 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown.

Think Devin Hester, but this guy can play wide receiver, too.

St. Louis features a quartet of young running backs – Zac Stacy, Daryl Richardson, Benny Cunningham and Isaiah Pead.

Stacy is the new No. 1, with 129 rushes and 537 yards, a 4.2 average and three touchdowns rushing. He also has caught 15 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown receiving. All four backs catch the ball out of the backfield. Richardson has been banged up, and Pead,

the highest draft choice of the four, is buried on the bench.

The Rams struggle at receiver.

Chris Givens is their No. 1 with 28 receptions and 463 yards for a 16.5 average. Beyond Austin, who has 33 receptions for 345 yards and four touchdowns, Austin Pettis and Brian Quick fill out this pedestrian group.

While the Bears were recruiting Martellus Bennett in free agency, the Rams went shopping for Jared Cook.

He has 33 receptions for 428 yards and three touchdowns. No. 2 tight end Lance Kendricks is a factor as well with 23 receptions, 172 yards and three touchdowns.

Like the Bears, the Rams are in the hands of their backup quarterback, Kellen Clemens. With the franchise, Sam Bradford, out for the year with an ACL tear, Clemens has completed 46 of 86 throws, a 53.5 completion rate, for 634 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions and a 79.3 passer rating. He’s been OK, but nowhere near as effective as Josh McCown. Clemens may be the weak link right now.

The best matchup of the game will feature Jake Long, who is once again healthy and one of the best left tackles in the game, going head-to-head with Julius Peppers.

Third-year player Robert Quinn is the NFL’s breakout defensive player of the year. Known as “Little Julius” at North Carolina – an ode to Peppers – before the Rams chose him with the 14th pick in the 2011 first round, Quinn already has 12 sacks and five forced fumbles.

He is complimented on the other end by Kyle Long’s big brother, Chris, the second player taken in the 2008 draft. Chris Long has 6½ sacks, one forced fumble and two recovered.

Linebackers James Laurinaitis and Alec Ogletree and defensive tackle Michael Brockers are three more first round picks, and Janoris Jenkins, who the Rams took with the 39th pick in the 2012 draft, are all playmakers.

This is a big-play defense that is getting better every week. Bears fans best hope they aren’t catching it at the worst possible time.

Rainey, who was waived earlier in the year by Cleveland, is owned in only 2.2 percent of ESPN leagues.

The general consensus was that he would split time with Brian Leonard. In the past two weeks, Rainey has asserted himself, and is clearly the more effective of the two backs.

Verdict: Rainey likely will be the guy in Tampa the rest of the way. However, the Bucs’ schedule is brutal. Owners expecting a repeat of Week 11 will be disappointed.

Week 11 Performance: Six receptions, 193 yards, one touchdown Until week 11, Floyd was averaging about six fantasy points a game. I was actually surprised to learn that he is owned in 63.3 percent of ESPN leagues. Those 63 percent must have known something, because Floyd went off for 27 points in Week 11. The Cardinals have a favorable schedule the next four weeks, but face the Seahawks and 49ers in Weeks 16 and 17.

Verdict: Definitely worth a roster spot, Floyd is a decent No. 3 wide receiver or flex option the rest of the way.

Matt McGloin, QB, Oakland Week 11 Performance: 197 yards passing, three touchdowns If you are looking for a back-up quarterback, here’s one thing we know about McGloin: He’s available (owned in

0.2 percent of ESPN leagues).

According to the scuttlebutt, McGloin will be given every opportunity to keep the starting job for the rest of the year.

Verdict: Perhaps McGloin catches on and develops into a solid pro. He has no fantasy value this season, however.

Garrett Graham, TE, Houston Week 11 Performance: Seven receptions, 136 yards, one touchdown For those in need of a tight end, Graham is owned in about 20 percent of ESPN leagues. He erupted in week 11, scoring his first touchdown since week 5. Owen Daniels could return to the Texans this year, but, given the season Houston is having, it would make more sense to let him sit out the rest of the year.

Verdict: Graham would be a nice play in Week 12 against the Jags. His value after this week is negligible.

Week 11 featured a number of surprise breakout performers. Some, like Rashad Jennings and Michael Floyd, already were owned in many fantasy leagues. Although these unlikely stars were most often fantasy benchwarmers, owners wise (or lucky) enough to start them received a huge boost in Week 11.

Other breakout performers came from nowhere. These players, such as Bobby Rainey, most likely reside in waiver land, and are sure to be hot pick-ups this week.

As we have learned over the years, one breakout performance does not ensure future productivity. Let’s review the unlikely fantasy stars from Week 11, and try to separate the one-week wonders from those worthy of a spot on your roster.

Week 11 Performance: 22 carries, 150 yards, one touchdown.

Jennings is owned in less than half (44 percent) of ESPN leagues. Veteran fantasy players are familiar with Jennings – he has had multiple opportunities to fill in for current teammate Darren McFadden and previously for Maurice Jones-Drew. Until recently, he never had failed to disappoint. In the past three weeks, however, he has averaged more than 18 points. In the next two weeks, Jennings has favorable matchups at home versus Tennessee and at Dallas. In Weeks 14 and 15, things get tougher (at Jets and versus Kansas City).

Verdict: McFadden’s return is not certain. Jennings is a decent stopgap for the next two weeks.

‘Delivery Man’ gives deja vu all over again

It seems like only eight months ago I was reviewing “Starbuck,” a charming little feel-good film by Ken Scott based on the true story of a sperm donor who wakes up to discover he has fathered 533 adorable kids. And now, here I am again, a mere 238 days later (but who’s counting?), reviewing “Delivery Man,” a charming little feel-good film

by Ken Scott based on the true story of a sperm donor who wakes up to discover he has fathered 533 adorable kids.

The plot is set in motion when the sperm donor learns that 142 of his offspring have filed a class-action lawsuit seeking to lift his veil of anonymity.

What’s the difference between the two films? Other than the fact that Scott – yes, remaking his own perfectly good French-Canadian movie in English – has replaced actor Patrick Huard with Vince Vaughn, not much.

“Starbuck” was a funny and warm-hearted trifle. So is “Delivery Man.” If anything, “Delivery Man” boasts a more clever, and less confusing, title.

“Starbuck” took its name not from the coffee company, but from the pseudonym used by sperm donor David Wozniak (Huard/Vaughn) – an obscure inside joke referencing the name of a famously fertile Holstein bull.

There are some other minor changes. All of the soccer references in the first movie, which is set in Quebec, have been changed to basketball references in the new film, which is set in Brooklyn.

And Chris Pratt, who plays David’s genially incompetent lawyer, Brett, is actually a

Vince Vaughn stars in the film “Delivery Man.” bit funnier than Antoine Bertrand, who played the part in the first film. That’s nice, because Vaughn is actually a teensy bit less lovable than Huard. Let’s call it a draw.

Not than Vaughn is miscast, or that his reading of the character is too misanthropic, by any means.

He nails David’s Peter Pan syndrome, for one thing, but is equally fine at evoking the character’s unexpected paternalism. David becomes surprisingly protective after he starts stalking some of the kids, all of whom are in their late teens and early 20s (and who apparently were cast from a cattle call audition seeking the most wholesome young actors and actresses in the known universe). Adam Chanler-Berat is particularly good as Viggo, a “Starbuck” progeny who discovers his biological father’s identity early on but protects David’s anonymity so he can have him all to himself. In the

process, David also discovers that it takes more than sperm to be a dad.

And that, after all, is what “Delivery Man” is about: not just children searching for a father, but a father searching for the meaning of the term itself. It’s especially lovely to see David interact, silently, with his profoundly disabled son. The wordless performance by Sebastien Rene, a young actor who played that character in both movies, is a guaranteed tearjerker.

One other weird thing hasn’t changed: The only major female characters are David’s pregnant girlfriend (Cobie Smulders) and one of his daughters (Britt Robertson).

David’s mother? Deceased. The wives of Brett and David’s two brothers (Bobby Moynihan and Simon Delaney)? They’re never seen or heard from. And the 533 women who actually used David’s sperm, and

who presumably conceived, carried, gave birth to and raised his children? It’s as if they were all killed in a freak ferry accident. For Scott, motherhood seems to be a less critical component of parenting than fatherhood, at least from a narrative standpoint.

I get it. Turnabout is fair play. So many movies treat fathers as invisible, expendable or irrelevant. It’s only expected to have a movie come along, every now and again, that does the same thing with mothers.

Yet all this does is to place “Delivery Man,” despite its roots in a true story, squarely in the realm of male fantasy.

• “Delivery Man” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated PG-13 and contains brief drug content, some crude language and sexual humor. It runs 104 minutes.

Modify toddler’s diet, habits to treat constipation Dear Doctor K: My toddler has frequent constipation, and I have been giving him milk of magnesia about once a week. Is there any risk with this over-the-counter medicine?

Dear Reader: I’d suggest speaking to your pediatrician or family physician before continuing to give your son milk of magnesia.

Normally, children pass stool at regular intervals without much effort or pain. Infants and toddlers typically have several bowel movements a day. Most children age 2 or older have one every day.

My pediatrician colleagues here at Harvard tell me they consider a child to be constipated when bowel movements happen less often than expected, or when the stools are hard and difficult or painful to pass.

Still, even though most children do not have constipation, it is a common problem. That’s particularly true for children between the ages of 2 to 5. This is the period when toilet training and developmental changes are happening. Many toddlers eat little fiber and lots of foods that contribute to constipation, such as dairy products, rice and bananas. Children also often don’t drink enough fluids. All these factors

Toddlers also often wait too long to go to the bathroom. They may be resisting toilet training or just be too busy playing. When a child withholds stool, it becomes hard and dry, and this may cause pain with the next bowel movement. So, the child begins a cycle of withholding stool.

Before turning to medication, try modifying your child’s diet and toilet habits: • Give your son more fiber-rich foods, such as beans, broccoli, carrots, bran, whole grains and fresh fruits.

• Minimize the dairy foods you feed him, such as yogurt, cheese and milk.

• Have your son drink prune juice. It works for kids as well as for adults.

• Encourage your toddler to drink four to six glasses of water each day.

• Make sure he gets regular exercise.

• If your son is toilet-trained, help him establish regular bowel

movements by sitting him on the toilet for 10 minutes at the same time each day, preferably after meals.

• If you think your son is acting out because he resents potty training, try stopping it for a few weeks.

These changes usually help.

But if they don’t, ask your pediatrician or family physician if you should try stool softeners and laxatives (like milk of magnesia).

These types of medications are available without a prescription and have minimal side effects.

You can also try a nonprescription glycerin suppository. You insert this small lubricating pill into your son’s rectum, making it easier for him to push out a stool.

Sometimes a constipated child will develop an impaction: The bowel movement gets so dry and hard that it can’t be squeezed out without a little help. That can be a finger inserted with a little lubricant, gently pulling out the hard stool. But don’t try this until you talk to your doctor.

Dr. Wallace: Some time ago, an 18-year-old high school graduate wrote to you asking if he should take an offer from a credit card company and apply for a card. You warned him about the high interest rate on the unpaid monthly balance and the importance of paying at least the minimum monthly payment allowed by the credit card company to keep a good credit rating.

That’s all well and good, but you should also have informed him that if he only makes the minimum monthly payment on a $2,000 balance, it will take 18 years to pay it off if he never charges anything else during those 18 years. Plus, he will have to pay $2,615 in interest.

That doesn’t make your suggestion to get a credit card look too intelligent.

I’m sure credit card companies are not thrilled that I printed your letter.

I still think that credit cards can be useful economic tools, if used prudently. My answer should have been: Yes, obtain the card, but use it wisely. Pay the balance each month, but if that is not possible, at least make the minimum payment, and then pay extra the next month to catch up.

Then I would insert your warning that by making only the minimum payment each month, a $2,000 debt would linger for the equivalent of a lifetime – another 18 years! And the interest you wound up paying would be considerably more than the debt itself.

That’s why the “for better or for worse” part of the marriage vow has meaning.

Dear Abby: I love my husband very much. Until the last few years, there have never been any problems in our 20-year marriage.

I have depression and epilepsy, and I am on five different medications for them.

Sometimes when I have come out of a seizure, I have found that my clothes have been removed and my husband is “touching” me.

Australian Bridge is published four times a year in a large-page format. As with all of these magazines, it aims primarily at duplicate players, but has material for less-capable players.

This opening-lead quiz comes from Ron Klinger. Look at only the West hand. South opens one heart, you pass, and North responds four diamonds, showing four-plus hearts, at least game-going values, and at most one diamond. East surprises you by intervening with five diamonds, but South rebids five hearts, and everyone passes. What would you lead?

Klinger is a leading player, teacher and writer who has a great eye for an instructive deal.

This one occurred during an Australian trial. At the table, Barbara Travis found the best lead: the diamond king. Her side was getting at most one diamond trick. And it might have been important for her to shift through the dummy at trick two. Also, if partner knew no switch would be helpful, she could have overtaken with the diamond ace and tried a lead from her side of the table.

Here, East played the diamond three at trick one, a suit-preference signal for clubs.

West led that suit at trick two, and declarer had to lose three tricks: one heart, one diamond and one club.

If West’s opening lead had been a low diamond and East had shifted to a low club, South probably would have put up her queen, based on East’s five-diamond bid. And declarer might well have guessed spades also.

It was much better not to give South a chance.
