I didn’t last more than a year or two as a student in Mrs. Barnes’ basement ballet studio when I was a young child. It really only means that I love to watch others dance, and I was not gifted with any ballet talent.

I have a special place in my heart for “The Nutcracker” especially. The music brings great memories to mind of my mom taking me to see the Joffrey Ballet’s production when I was just out of college.

This week, I was invited to photograph the Geneva Park District’s rehearsals for “The Nutcracker” for a separate story we are doing on boys in ballet. It was a study in contrasts as the only boy in the class, 10-year-old

New website focuses on Kane County residents’ health

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Kane County Health Department on Wednesday launched a new website that lets users see how the county stacks up in such topics as health, education, economics and housing, according to a news release.

The information – available at www.KaneHealthCounts.org – should help individuals understand how their

health relates to all county residents, the release states.

“Users can look up their communities – often being able to drill down to their ZIP code – and find meaningful statistics related to their health,” Barb Jeffers, Kane County Health Department executive director, stated in the release.

“You will be able to see for yourself the many ways the information can be used to compare your health with the

community in which you live, as well as the communities in the region.”

Residents are encouraged to bookmark the website, which will be updated regularly and will serve as a storehouse of heath data, demographic information, resources, best practices and reports that provide an unbiased look at life in Kane County, the release states.

“Because we know that where we live has a direct ef-

fect on our health, this type of information is crucial,” the release states. “It dictates the ability to find healthy food (such as proximity to grocery stores) and opportunities for physical activity (such as living within walkable neighborhoods or near parks). The physical environment plays a part in the air we breathe and the water we drink.”

A FAQ section is available to help guide visitors through the site.

Mac Pizza Supreme wins Geneva student challenge at Aurelio’s

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The patrons of Aurelio’s Pizza this week made clear their favorite student-selected item on the menu was the Mac Pizza Supreme.

A total of 54 Mac Pizza Supremes of various sizes were sold Wednesday at Aurelio’s Pizza, 330 W. State St., Geneva, Aurelio’s general manager Tyler Larocca said.

The specialty pizza was one of four developed by the marketing students at Geneva High School. Their challenge was to survey people, come up with their own specialty pizza and outsell their classmates, who were all divided into four

This is the second year Geneva High School teacher Eric Hatczel has partnered with Aurelio’s for the challenge.

During the first challenge, about 100 pizzas were sold.

This year, a total of 153 pizza were sold, Larocca said.

“I think it’s building steam at this point,” Larocca said.

The Mac Pizza Supreme

was comprised of mostaccioli noodles, Alfredo sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, and topped with American bacon.

The runner-up with 44 pizzas sold was the Wing King, a cheese pizza with diced, boneless chicken wings drizzled with buffalo sauce.

The Ron Swanson pizza named after Nick Offerman’s character on the NBC TV series “Parks and Recreation” came in third with 40 pizzas sold. The pizza consisted of meatballs, pepperoni, American bacon and a drizzle of BBQ sauce on top.

There were 15 pizzas sold of the Meat Feast, which included Italian beef, Italian sausage and meatballs, Larocca said.

CHARLES – After presenting the St. Charles School District 303 facilities options 38 times – including during a string of 15 community meetings that ended Tuesday – Superintendent Don Schlomann said he has learned a lot from those passionate about their children’s education.

“The people are extremely polite and articulate about being able to express what they want,” he said, adding he felt there was genuine dialogue.

“Every night was a new set of people with new lenses looking at these things.”

The community should soon know whether efforts to save schools from closing or to keep sixth grade in the middle schools paid off.

The District 303 Board of Education could make a decision as early as Jan. 11, Schlomann said. He said his hope is that the board chooses one of the four options – the choices are maintaining the status quo and three scenarios involving the closure of Haines Middle School and Lincoln and Wasco elementary schools – or makes its own option.

The district is looking at options to cut costs in anticipation of getting less state money from Illinois, having the cost of teacher pensions be shifted from the state to the district and the possibility of a property tax freeze.

Board President Steve Spurling said it might come down to debating a couple of options.

“I think most of us have made up our minds what ones we don’t want to do,” he said.

The board will get to ask the administration questions during a special meeting set for 7 p.m. Dec. 11, Schlomann said. It will be held at Wredling Middle School, he said, and will also include time for public input and the

Spurling said the community feedback is “extremely” helpful.

“On a topic this important, we don’t want to assume what people will be thinking,” he said, noting it’s also important to know the reasoning behind the opinions. “It’s all very valuable information.”

Kristin Louis, a parent of a high school freshman and a fifth-grader, is one of more than 700 supporters of a Change.org petition titled “No K-6 in St. Charles, Illinois.”

One of the proposed options calls for the closure of Haines Middle School, moving sixth grade to the elementary schools and retrofitting Thompson Middle School.

Louis said she dislikes the

K-6 option because it would result in a shorter school day for sixth-graders and would eliminate such sixth-grader courses as foreign language, choir and Project Lead the Way. “I’m against it for so many reasons,” she said.

Fiona Wiese, a 10-year-old fifth-grader at Lincoln Elementary School, disagrees with the K-6 option. One of the most exciting parts about being a fifth-grader is knowing that next year she will move to a new school with lockers, passing periods, and, she said, more friends she can meet.

But, she said, she doesn’t want her school to close, either.

“Lincoln is the best school that there possibly is,” Fiona said. “It feels like a family there.”

Although District 303 is separate from the city government, St. Charles aldermen have spoken publicly about the potential school closures.

At a recent City Council meeting, 4th Ward Alderman Steve Gaugel encouraged his colleagues to contact the school board. He noted that only five of the district’s 12 elementary schools are in the city limits, and closing Lincoln would bring that number to four.

“It does have an effect on the city,” he said.

Fellow 4th Ward Alderman Jo Krieger attended the council meeting in an orange “Save Lincoln Elementary School” T-shirt. She noted that she and others in her family went to the school.

“I think it’s a valuable asset to the community, and it should survive,” she said.

Other aldermen, including 5th Ward Alderman and Lincoln alumna Maureen Lewis, said they also wanted “Save Lincoln” apparel.

“Where do we get T-shirts?”

1st Ward Alderman Dan Stellato asked. “Seriously.”

In addition to the shirts, community members are making statements with yard signs and a parade float.

Last week, parents Emily Andersen Wilson and Jay Mathes submitted forms to enter a “Save Lincoln Elementary School” float in the Nov. 28 Electric Christmas Parade, according to a press release.

The advisory also noted that “the first accumulating snow of the year can catch motorists off guard.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office, echoes that warning. In an email, Gengler reminded drivers to be careful, particularly in the western portion of Kane County.

“Rural Kane County is just that, rural,” Gengler wrote.

“There are no street lights.

This causes poor visibility to be even worse. The wind causes snow to blow and drift more west of Randall [Road] than in the cities. A town may be plowed, but the rural and unincorporated roads may

not be as clear.”

The city of Geneva sent out a reminder about winter parking rules, which are similar to others in the area.

Parking on snow routes in Geneva will be prohibited when the snowfall exceeds 2 inches, and 2 inches also will be the standard in St. Charles and Batavia, according to policies posted on the cities’ websites.

In St. Charles and Batavia, parking will not be allowed until 24 hours after the end of the snowfall or until the

street is plowed and all snow is removed, whichever occurs first. Geneva’s policy states that parking is not permitted on secondary streets “at any time within 12 hours following a snowfall of 3 inches or more or until a street has been plowed to the curb.”

“It is strongly recommended residents move their cars from the streets when a snow storm is forecasted to avoid being ticketed or having their vehicles towed,” Geneva’s news release states.

The advisory warns of snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches. Ricky Castro, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said all of central Kane County can expect snow that will stick on the ground during the storm.

Castro said it is significant that such a snowfall would occur before Thanksgiving.

Coroner changes cause of death to undetermined

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Geneva couple who had “outstanding concerns” about the conclusions a former coroner made regarding their teen daughter’s death are “deeply grateful” that Kane County Coroner Rob Russell is reviewing past cases, according to an open letter to the community from Rod Mebane.

“To us, after 4½ years of unfinished business, being able to close the file with some appropriate finality brings an invaluable sense of comfort,” Mebane wrote.

Russell said he recently changed former Coroner Chuck West’s original ruling for Emma Mebane – accidental death caused by polypharmacy, a term that coincides with an overdose – to undetermined for both the manner and cause of death.

Rod Mebane contacted Russell about the case after the coroner announced in July that he would review past cases to address potential inaccuracies.

The case is one of three that have been reviewed and completed, Russell said, noting two remain under investigation.

Rod Mebane wrote that then-Coroner Chuck West made an “unfounded assumption” at the outset that his 19-year-old daughter, Emma, committed suicide – a notion that was inconsistent with her family’s understanding of her.

Despite the family’s efforts to get her death certificate amended, West – who was indicted in 2010 on five counts of felony official misconduct and died in 2012 – stood by his original ruling, Rod Mebane wrote.

He was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, in 1938 to the Vincent Sr. and Kathryn Schuster. At Pottsville High School he was a varsity letterman in four sports. He later attended Lehigh University, from which he received a master’s degree, and had a successful career in engineering and sales.

He is survived by Ann Lynn Schuster, his wife of 50 years; two sons, David and Mark; and five grandchildren, Halie, Alexandra, Abigail, Benjamin and Jacob.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara.

Vincent enjoyed sports, reading, jazz music, and in retirement spending time with his beloved grandchildren and sharing his sweet tooth for doughnuts and ice cream with them.

One Thanksgiving dessert too many – FYAs My wife and I were driving north on Randall Road after seeing “Spectre,” the latest “Bond, James Bond,” extravaganza. At 9 o’clock, the traffic lights sparkled bright as Christmas tree bulbs, especially the new flashing yellow arrows – or FYAs. “They’re weird,” Tia said.

“I’m writing a column about them.”

“What are you saying about them?”

“That they’re weird.”

I didn’t actually say that then, but I’m saying it now. Because they talk to me.

“Achtung!” they warn. “You will not turn left while cars, trucks, buses or taxiing airplanes looking for DuPage Airport threaten your well-being. You will not hit one or more pedestrians. You will proceed cautiously.”

At least that’s what they’re supposed to communicate, and likely why Kane County officials sought to have them installed with, I’m assuming, your tax dollars.

I wonder, however, how many drivers need additional help turning left.

I don’t usually associate political ideology with traffic lights, but FYAs got me thinking. Most of Kane County – at least a majority of those 13 percent of eligible voters who visit their polling place – leans right. And conservative principles advocate individual responsibility, pooh-poohing entitlements and urging governments to worry about only the necessities: water purity, resurfaced roads, treed cats, etc.

Can the Kane County Transportation Committee be unaware of that conservative mission statement?

Seems to me they’re bucking their constituents’ political bent by replacing perfectly good green lights with state-of-the-art FYAs when they both carry identical job descriptions.

In fact, the Kane County Division of Transportation admits – as stated in a Kane County Chronicle article – that flashing yellow arrows operate the same as solid green lights for left turns. Translation: They do the same things.

RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger However, KDOT continues – in that same Chronicle article – that [FYAs] better convey to drivers the need to yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians who might be crossing.

The awkward syntax aside, I’m hearing KDOT believes drivers need additional assistance, as though disabled, to execute a safe left-hand turn. The agency doesn’t trust texting teens, ear-glued iPhone moms, Pop Tart-unwrapping dads and terrified octogenarians to safely navigate a left-hand turn without getting T-boned.

No doubt FYAs are somewhat safer. I wrote Stephen Zulkowski, permit/traffic engineer at KDOT, asking for the research they used to justify FYA installment. Skimming only one of three PDFs bolloxed me better than “Moby Dick” and convinced me that lots of time and money went into proving FYAs would help protect at least a few distracted dupes’ health and insurance rates.

But at what cost? And what’s next?

Dragon’s teeth, those World War II pyramidal cement barriers built to deter tank aggression? Maybe they’ll strategically pop up at night to block your turn when invisible rec-vees approach an intersection unseen.

Look, Kane County officials, unlike fictional double-o agents, most county residents don’t have a license to kill; we have a license to drive. Wall Street opens its lobbying war chest

By MARK WHITEHOUSE Bloomberg View This December could be Wall Street’s best chance in a while to roll back financial regulation. Judging from the amount of money the industry has been spending on lobbying, it’s preparing for battle.

The catalyst is a deadline that President Barack Obama and Congress must meet: If they don’t agree on a $1.1 trillion spending bill by Dec. 11, the government may have to shut down.

This provides lawmakers with an opportunity to tack riders onto the must-pass legislation, including some gifts to the financial industry the White House has resisted.

On Wall Street’s wish list? Delaying a

fiduciary rule designed to make sure brokers offer older folks unconflicted advice, and limiting regulators’ power to subject large financial institutions to extra scrutiny.

Ahead of what could be a major showdown with financial-reform advocates, such as Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Wall Street’s lobbying budget has increased sharply.

Data compiled by Bloomberg Government shows that five groups representing the financial industry, along with the six largest U.S. banks, spent $14.7 million in the third quarter of 2015. That represents their largest share of all industries’ spending since at least mid-2008.

Tacking Wall Street’s wishes onto other legislation without proper examination or debate, however, is no way to go about it.

By any measure, that everlasting carrot has arrived.

State prelims at New Trier begin today, with the finals set for noon Saturday.

“We’ve all been working super hard to get to this moment, and this season we’ve all been working together as a team and making sure that we’re all on board,” St. Charles North senior Sammy Sauer said. “Considering that we have a lot of freshmen on the state team this year, we’ve all been super caring and pulling them in.”

North won all three relays at the St. Charles East Sectional this past weekend, with usual suspects such as Sauer and classmates Monica Guyett and

Grace Samuelson welcoming freshmen Mallory Jump and Kayleigh Lewis to the mix.

Freshman Rachel Ponte qualified as an individual in the 100-yard breaststroke, which suddenly meant sophomores Audrey Guyett and Jillian Waslawski no longer were the team’s state newbies.

Dare they be classified as “veterans,” then?

Why not? Audrey Guyett called state “a different environment than any other meet that I’ve had or I’ve been to,” and is eager to impart to

North’s freshmen whatever wisdom or reassurance she can.

“We practice with them every day, and I just feel like they are learning a lot from the older girls,” Audrey Guyett said.

“Having such great seniors along with me and Jillian being sophomores, it’s a great leadership role for us to have and for them to learn from.”

schools.

Runner-up Rosary graduated only three members from the team that tallied 118 points at Evanston, 30 behind defending state champion Loyola Academy.

The Beads also boast an infusion of freshmen, including Athena Ye, Kathryn Mueller, Linda Licari, Sydney VanOvermeiren and Julie Bottarini, who each contributed to a runaway victory at the Neuqua Valley Sectional.

It’s been talked about before,” Rosary assistant Glenn Brown said. “The freshman class is outstanding, and that only is adding to everything that we’re able to do. Some of the decisions are very easy to make, but we lay it out there for the girls and tell them what they have to do by what time if they want to be a part of this squad, that squad – sectionals being the big one.

They know what they have to do.”

Really, that last part goes for any athlete statewide.

State qualifying standards are

posted online well before the state series, and then there’s the matter of the aforementioned bulletin board motivation.

“You focus on working all season and then see what happens with a little bit of rest,” St. Charles East coach Joe Cabel said. “It pops up on you every year. Coaches always turn around and say, ‘Can you believe this is the last meet in the season?’ You get caught up in it. I don’t really compare it to any other year. You just go, go, go, rest a little bit and then see how fast you can go.”

East edged North for the sectional title after the North Stars earned the Upstate Eight Conference championship on Oct. 31.

vidual sectional champs in juniors Amy Pearson (200 freestyle) and Anna O’Malley (100 butterfly) but tout a determined group of sophomores and seniors among their state haul.

“That’s just kind of the way the cards went down last weekend, but we’re more than ready to go this weekend,” Cabel said. “You don’t really thing about winning the (sectional) meet, you think about qualifying for the state meet.

It’s a Catch-22.”

So, what do swimmers ponder now that their yardages have tapered, their morning workouts have ended and the state countdown has reached zero?

“Sleeping in and thinking about speed,” Cabel said.

Hannah Frazier Batavia girls basketball forward of point guard Cinia McCray and freshman Keimari Rimmer, as both had nine points in the first quarter. Frazier led the Bulldogs with 21 points and was the only consistent scorer for Batavia (1-1). She scored 11 of the team’s first 14 points but Batavia found itself down, 3614, early in the second quarter.

“We put ourselves in a hole early,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “I told the girls, the lead got to 20 – I thought it could’ve gotten to 30 in a heartbeat.”

After digging themselves a formidable deficit, the Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the lead before intermission.

The Bulldogs got into the bonus with 2:29 remaining in the half and whittled the lead down to 41-29 at halftime by going on a 15-5 run to close the half.

The teams were back and forth in the third quarter, with Batavia pulling within 11 on multiple occasions, but Proviso East kept its lead in double digits throughout the second half with timely baskets while taking advantage of the Bulldogs’ turnovers induced by the Pirates’ full-court pressure.

The lead was trimmed to 50-39 near the end of the third after Batavia freshman Hailey Orman splashed her first of two 3-pointers on the night,

but Proviso East countered with a quick 4-0 run to end the period with a 15-point lead.

“We kept saying, ‘Lets get it to 10. Lets get it to single digits.’ It has a whole different feel if the lead is single digits,” Jensen said. “We had some nice minutes here and there but we couldn’t quite get enough of our good play consecutively throughout that game.”

McCray finished with 25 points for the Pirates and Rimmer chipped in 16 despite dealing with foul trouble for much of the game. Caprice Hairston played the role of point forward and provided a little bit of everything for the Pirates, especially on the glass. She finished with 16 points.

For as well as Frazier played in the paint, there were opportunities to feed the post

even more. The Pirates provided quick double teams by sitting in a 2-3 zone, and Batavia struggled at times to connect on entry feeds into the post.

When Frazier did get the ball down low, she was able to get a bucket or get to the free throw line at will.

“The answer is probably always no, because she’s that talented,” Jensen said on if Frazier got enough touches.

“I’m always saying she doesn’t have to score all the points but attention has to be given her way every single time down the floor.”

Batavia will play Oak Park-River Forest at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday in its final game of pool play. The eight-team tournament will conclude Nov. 27 and 28.

RIVER FOREST – A slow start doomed the Batavia girl’s basketball team Thursday against Proviso East.

In their second game of Trinity’s second annual Thanksgiving tournament, Batavia fell behind by 18 points after the first quarter and was unable to recover in a 71-49 defeat.

“It took us too long to react and get our wits about us,” Bulldogs forward Hannah Frazier said. “That’s something we need to work on, I know it’s early in the season, but we need to be able to handle that pressure. Too many unforced turnovers.”

SPORTS BRIEFS PONTIAC – Pulling away down the stretch, the St. Charles North girls basketball team opened its season Thursday with a 64-50 victory against La Salle-Peru in the Pontiac Thanksgiving Tournament.

North led, 14-11, after one quarter but watched the Cavaliers tie the game at 23-all at the half.

The North Stars’ usual brand of up-tempo ball allowed them to create distance after that, as the team took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.

East boys bowling loses on road

GLENDALE HEIGHTS – The visiting St. Charles East boys bowling team lost to Glenbard East 3,130 to 3,076 in an Upstate Eight Conference dual at the Brunswick Zone.

East won the second game to earn a single point among a possible five.

“We bowled decent. Not up to our expectations,” Saints coach Steve Dessauer said. “Glenbard East, they came up. They showed up. It was their house.

They defended their house well.

Not that there’s any defense in bowling, but they rose to the challenge.”

Cole Cartee (686), Aaron Cordray (610) and Andrew Culbertson (597) rolled the top series for East.

Jake Jordan paced Glenbard East, in just its second season as a program, with a 723.

“East is a premium team.

We were fortunate to beat a premium team,” Rams coach Jerry Maculitis said. “Now we can gauge where to go with our program.”

Rosary girls basketball falls

AURORA – The Rosary girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the coach Don Rasich era on Thursday, falling, 51-31, in IMSA Hoops Invitational play.

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com CAMPTON HILLS – Thanks to a special donation of transportation by White Brothers Trucking Co. of Wasco, Garfield Farm Museum in Campton Hills has saved from demolition a rare, circa-1870s’ limestone smokehouse that was located in Campton Forest Preserve.

Since 1982 – when Minnetta Barber, a professor and great-granddaughter of Timothy Garfield, bequeathed her household belongings to Garfield Farm Museum – museum founders were aware of the unique stone smokehouse that stood behind Barber’s maternal grandfather’s (Gunnar Anderson’s) home, states a news release from Garfield

Farm Museum.

She had sold her family farm below market value in 1970 to the Forest Preserve District of Kane County to establish Campton’s first preserve, the release states.

When forest preserve policy changed – and existing historic structures on preserve property were being removed – an opportunity arose to preserve the limestone smokehouse by moving it.

For the last five years, ways to preserve the building were sought. Grandnieces and a grandnephew donated seed money in memory of Ann Barber Megaw to be used for the building’s preservation, states the release.

Several building movers were contacted, but they were reluctant to suggest a way

to move the structure, the release states. Eventually, Trillium Dell Timberworks of Knoxville, Illinois, got involved. But as the logistics of the move were worked out, new issues would arise.

“Time and time again, several individuals from different professional trades kept saying it would be great to just pick up [the building] and put it on a truck,” the release states. “This was a hopeful thought, but could the building [and] the steel framing withstand such a move? It was not a hopeful time, but museum officials recalled a longtime friend.”

Shoppers come to Batavia for craft and vendor event

More than 750 shoppers came through the doors to enjoy more than 100 crafters and vendors; a bake sale; charity raffle; 50/50 raffle; and lunch served by Jimmy John’s, states a news release from the club.

The Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation appreciates the support of all of its sponsors for the community event, particularly its platinum sponsors – Apollo Development

and Investment, ARCO/Murray National Construction and PraxisFit – as well as all of the additional sponsors and in-kind donators, the release states, noting that the Autumn Craft and Vendor Show is the foundation’s largest fundraiser.

Proceeds from the show are distributed to local charities that work to improve the lives of children and families in the community, states the release.

“Growing from an agricultural-based trucking firm to one that specializes in hauling outlandishly oversized loads, nationally and internationally, second-generation owner and recently ‘retired’ president Jim White got a call,” states the release. “ ... Having grown up in Wasco and known Ms. Barber, he offered his trucking services free-of-charge right down to obtaining necessary permits.”

Now the question became – could the building be picked up?

Dan’s Crane Rental of Wasco took one look and said yes, and – because of the museum’s status – was ready to give a generous price consideration, the release states. Then a call came from staff members at Trillium Dell who were concerned over the real weight of the building and steel. By using very conservative calculations, an estimate was made, which was beyond the abilities of the 40ton crane. White Brothers then suggested O’Donnell Crane of Cortland. Prepared for the heavier weight, O’Donnell sent in its 115-ton crane, again with a very favorable consideration for the museum, the release states.

“Wrapping it up tighter than any Christmas present, Trillium Dell Timberworks went to paneling the interior and exterior, bracing the little smokehouse from inside and strapping it outside with two-by-fours,” states the release. “More welds and steel were added to the steel superstructure. With less that 12 hours to go, Tom White, Jim White’s son, came down from the Milwaukee terminal to check out all the safety issues of transport. Looking at the steel beams, which staggered and needed a 25-foot-long trailer, Tom said cut off 18 inches on the one beam. That would make it fit on a special low trailer that had hydraulics to raise it above the uneven ground and the sharp crest of the driveway.”

For all the crew it was the most tense time, the release states.

“Slowly the beams came off the cribbing, more gently than a child in a swing,” states the release. “The 10 tons of stone and mortar, the three tons of steel and rigging rose, and – in an arc – gracefully pivoted towards the White Brothers trailer. Not a sound, not a creak could be heard, just the pulse of the diesel engines in the crane and semi, as it sat down on the trailer.”

“With the crane going ahead, setting up at the farm, by noon, the smokehouse was unloaded and sitting on terra firma once again,” states the release. “Thoughts ran through everyone’s mind how it could have turned into a pile of rubble at any point, but all the great help and good spirits got it safely to its destination. It could have been taken apart stone by stone and meticulously rebuilt, but the very thing that made it special, the

That’s not usually the case if you have general anesthesia.

To begin, the doctor will make a low, horizontal incision in the abdomen at or just above the pubic hairline. A vertical incision may be used in an emergency situation.

Next, the uterus is opened. The incision usually is horizontal and low in the uterus. A vertical incision often is used to perform a pre-term cesarean delivery.

The bag of waters is broken. The baby is delivered. The umbilical cord is clamped and cut.

You will get an antibiotic just after delivery to reduce the risk of infection.

The time from the beginning of surgery to delivery of the baby generally is less than 10 minutes. It can take another 30 to 40 minutes to remove the placenta and close the uterus and abdomen with stitches or staples.

C-sections have been performed for several thousand years. However, it is only in the past 150 years or so – since the development of anesthesia – that they have been performed with some frequency. If studies show the baby is just not going to be able to come out through the birth canal, a C-section can be lifesaving, for both baby and mother.

Scheduled C-sections, like yours, almost always are uneventful. You and the baby should do fine.

Dr. Wallace: Jordan and I are both 17 and had been dating for more than a year. He was going steady with Vicky before he met me, but she had dumped him for another guy and Jordan told me he was glad to be rid of her. Dear Dr. K: My doctor says she is going to have to deliver my baby by C-section. What will happen during this procedure?

Dear Reader: A cesarean delivery, or C-section, is surgery to deliver a baby through the abdomen. It may be scheduled in advance when a woman cannot or should not deliver the baby through the vagina. A C-section also may be performed if continuing with labor or delivery becomes risky to the mother or baby.

Finally, a cesarean may be done as an emergency procedure if there is immediate risk to a mother or baby.

Women undergoing a scheduled C-section should not eat or drink for several hours before surgery. You will take antacids because stomach juices can – rarely – be regurgitated up into a woman’s throat, and then leak down into her lungs during surgery. If you take antacids, the juices contain much less acid.

Just before surgery, an intravenous line (IV) is placed into a vein. It will deliver medications and fluids. It also can provide a blood transfusion during surgery if needed.

A flexible tube is inserted into your bladder to drain urine. Your abdomen and pubic area are washed with an antiseptic or antibacterial soap.

Regional anesthesia usually is used for C-sections. You are awake and alert during the baby’s birth. However, the anesthesia will make you numb from the waist down. You can breathe naturally on your own.

(You will be given an oxygen mask to use as needed.) General anesthesia may be used for some emergency C-sections, but your C-section will not be done on an emergency basis.

If a bridge auction does not find the best fit, change the sequence.

Today’s deal was about finding the right suit fit. How should the auction have proceeded, if at all, after South rebid two hearts? (Yes, he might have overbid slightly with three hearts. The most accurate rebid was two-and-ahalf hearts!)

North’s first decision was: pass or two spades? If South was 5-4 in the majors, two spades, the 5-2 fit, probably would have played better than two hearts, a 4-3 fit. But if South had a minimum 5-5, passing rated to be the winner. The key, though, was the strength of North’s hand. If South had enough power to bid a third time, North had sufficient to accept the game-try. So, North correctly rebid two spades.

At the table, South now jumped to four spades. This was a clear error, given that North couldn’t have three spades, because she would have responded two spades, not one notrump. South should have continued with three (or four) hearts, which would have got them to four hearts, a contract that would surely have made.

Four spades was another matter.

West led the club king, then made the excellent continuation of the club 10 to pin South’s eight. South ruffed the third club, cashed the diamond king, played a heart to the queen, threw a heart on the diamond ace and ran the spade jack. Now the roof fell in. West won and led her fourth club, on which East discarded his heart jack. The contract went down three.
