Smithsonian film crew visits Rosary High School

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – Students at Rosary High School have been learning about history by making their own artifacts and explaining the significance to a film crew from the Washington, D.C.-based Smithsonian Institution.

On Wednesday, Rosary High School freshman Carlee Hoschouer, 14, of North Aurora, was being interviewed about the painted Cleopatra head she had made. During the interview, she told the film crew how she bought a head mold along with a wig and headpiece, and then used paint for Cleopatra’s makeup.

“I had it planned out before I did it,” Hoschouer said after the interview. “I used her as an example of mummification.”

Rosary is one of five schools in the nation – and the only one in Illinois – chosen for a visit from the Smithsonian crew. Hoschouer said she wanted to submit Cleopatra as an artifact because of the power Cleopatra had.

“She had power even as a woman,” Hoschouer said.

“That wasn’t very popular back then.”

The film crew was at the school to speak with students from the honors world history classes who have been participating in the online Smithsonian Quest program. They will return today.

The Smithsonian Quest program is an online learning platform that challenges students to complete a series of quests in a given category or topic. Rosary students have

“My greatest hope was that they understand that history lives outside of their classroom, their textbook and themselves,” said Stephanie Krzeminski, world history/ honors world history teacher at Rosary.

Ashley Naranjo, learning initiatives specialist for the Smithsonian Institution, said the idea of the Smithsonian Quest program is to provide more resources to students.

“I am impressed with the students and how much research they have put in their projects,” Naranjo said.

Rosary freshman Sarah Foley of St. Charles was being interviewed Wednesday about the canopic jars of ancient Egypt that she made. The jars were used as containers to hold internal organs of the deceased who was going to be mummified.

“I’ve always been fascinated by other religions and beliefs,” Foley said. “I enjoy learning about history and really like going to museums.”

Rosary sophomore Olivia Wulbert of Batavia participated in the program last year and will be interviewed today by the Smithsonian film crew.

For her artifact, she made an offering tray that would have been placed in a mummy’s tomb in ancient Egypt.

“I learned a lot about the Egyptians and how much care they put into burying their dead,” Wulbert said. “Each detail was important to them.”

Geneva American Legion plans Friday night dinners

Holiday happenings bring a ho-ho-whole lot of fun

Time to jingle some bells, deck some halls, stuff some stockings and generally just get in the spirit of the season. But lest one think December is all about the mall, the St. Charles Park District has created a month of holiday activities that will appeal to kids from 1 to 92, as the classic “Christmas Song” says.

The season kicks off with a Woodland Santa’s Holiday Workshop from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 7. Welcome Santa as he arrives at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center on his sled, pulled – not by eight tiny reindeer – but by a team of sled dogs. Kids ages 3 and older can help the big guy get ready for the big day by making holiday ornaments, and they can even write him a letter to make sure their wish list lands in the right hands.

But if kids can’t make it out to see Santa in person, a phone call can be the next best thing. The park district has a direct line to the North Pole and parents can arrange for their child to speak to Santa, Mrs. Claus or one of the elves (who would, no doubt, appreciate a break from all the toy-making activity). Phone lines will be open from 3 to 6 p.m. Dec. 9. Parents must register their child for a specific phone time. The cost of the call is $4.50, with proceeds going to benefit the Salvation Army local

food pantry.

Of course, Santa can only do so much when it comes to putting the right present under the tree. Artistic gift givers will appreciate three programs where they can create their very own handmade gift. The staff from Picasso’s Workshop will hold a holiday gift making program at Pottawatomie Community Center from 4 to 5 p.m. Dec. 9, for children ages 6 to 10. Kids can work on charming crafts, such as decorative gingerbread men, fashionable jewelry and handy coin dishes.

All supplies for painting, sculpture and decoupage are provided.

And for budding artists who find themselves inspired by the season, Tony & Friends Art Studio will hold three one-day Winter Workshops Dec. 22, Dec. 23 and Dec. 30, where kids ages 5 to 13 can craft their own holiday project.

But for those who take their inspiration from the great outdoors, two nature-themed gift-making programs are scheduled at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. Participants in the “Natural Gift Giving” program on Dec. 11 will learn how to make environmentally-friendly natural gifts, such as gingerbread body scrub, and receive tips on aromatherapy. And kids ages 6 and older who want to give unto others while also giving Mother Earth a break can stop by Hickory Knolls on Dec. 23, for a new program, “New to You Holi-

day Crafts,” to learn how to create gifts using natural or recycled materials.

To be sure, the holidays are a joyful time of year for kids, and, luckily, the St. Charles Park District has a number of programs that help them channel their excitement and energy. Children ages 6 to 12 can help transform the Pottawatomie Community Center into a battleground of fun during Nerf Night on Dec. 15. Using their own Nerf guns, darts and protective eyewear, kids can compete in a variety of games, such as “Capture the Flag” and “King of the Hill.”

Little ones can celebrate Santa’s imminent arrival at “Jingle Mingle” on Dec. 20 by spending the afternoon making winter crafts and playing games in the gym.

Older kids, ages 11 to 19, will want to ramp up the holiday fun playing Walleyball, a fast-paced variation of volleyball played on an indoor racquetball court at the Norris Center. Transportation is provided from the STC Underground at Baker Community Center for the program, which runs

Alpine Valley Resort in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, offers “some of the most diverse skiing and snowboarding terrain in the Midwest. It features more than 90 acres of skiable land, with a 388-foot vertical drop spread out over 20 runs. (A vertical drop is the distance between the highest point reached by the ski lifts, and the bottom.)

Wilmot Mountain in Wilmot, Wisconsin (Kenosha County) is about an hour drive from Chicago. With a 230-foot vertical drop and eight lifts, Wilmot has beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs. “There’s a long run of 2,500 feet, and about 120 acres. Hundreds of thousands of Chicagoland skiers have learned to ski here in the last 65 years,” describes On the Snow.

Karl Dennis Coyner, age 73, died Monday, November 17, 2014, peacefully at home in St. Charles.

Karl was born December 15, 1940, in Sullivan, Indiana, to Lloyd and Edna (Steiner) Coyner.

He was raised in Dugger, Indiana, graduated from Union High School in 1958, and studied at Indiana University, earning a B.A. in chemistry and an M.A. in education. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, the Marching Hundred, Symphonic Band, and Kappa Kappa Psi honorary band fraternity.

Karl’s first job was in Dugger, teaching grades 7 through 12 science, math and German and directing the band. In 1967, he moved to Illinois, and taught chemistry for 27 years at West Chicago High School, where he met English teacher, Kathy Hutter. They were married June 20, 1970, and made their home in St. Charles, where they raised their two children, Kristin and Karl. During that time he also taught chemistry part-time, at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove. Beginning in 1994, Karl worked as a food chemist and as an international technical trainer in English, German and Spanish. Upon retirement, Karl began blowing glass, first through courses conducted by the Art Institute of Chicago, and Corning Studios in Corning, New York, and then at Prodigy Glass in Oak Park.

Karl’s creativity extended to furniture building, designing and building the family home and gardening. He was a member of the Batavia Orchid Society. Traveling was a passion of Karl’s. He also loved to host international visitors, beginning with Youth for Understanding exchange students and later through the Chicago chapter of Friendship Force International. He found great joy in opera, theater and art.

Karl is survived by his wife, Katherine; daughter, Kristin (Bruce) Dickerson of Germantown, TN; son, Karl of Brooklyn, NY; granddaughter, Sophia Dickerson of Germantown, TN. He is also survived by his brother, Alan Keith (Barbara) Coyner of Indianapolis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Melanie Hutter and Carl Eric and Cairn Hutter; nephews, Kevin (Jessica) Coyner, Patrick (Molly) Hutter, and David Hutter; niece,

Sarah (Randy) Buitendyk; and special exchange student “daughter”, Sophia Thomaschke (Andreas) Henn and their children of Cologne, Germany.

Karl is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Edna Coyner.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 29, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles. Visitation will be held before the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Fritz was a tireless volunteer for the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church Comfort Care, Giving Tree and Day Break programs.

Cross concedes defeat in race for state treasurer editorial@kcchronicle.com The post-election battle between Republican Tom Cross and Democrat Mike Frerichs for Illinois treasurer has seemingly come to an end.

Cross officially conceded defeat to Frerichs on Wednesday, according to a statement released by Tim Schneider, chairman of the Illinois Republican Party.

“I want to commend Tom Cross and his campaign team on a tough, hard-fought race,” Schneider said in the statement.

Election night results on Nov. 4 reported by the Chicago Sun-Times showed Cross slightly leading Frerichs with 91 percent of precincts reporting.

However, ballots still needed to be counted, and – as results were tallied – Cross’s narrow lead fizzled.

Frerichs, a state senator, will replace Treasurer Dan Rutherford in January.

Rutherford, a Republican, made a bid for governor in the spring primary, but it was compromised after allegations of sexual harassment were lodged by a former staff member.

14 Jury trial for Shadwick King moved from Dec. 8 to Feb. 2

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Geneva man charged with his wife’s murder must now wait until after the new year for a trial.

The jury trial for Shadwick King, 47, was initially set for Dec. 8, but it was moved to Feb. 2 during a Wednesday morning court appearance before Kane County Judge James Hallock.

King faces two counts of first-degree m u r d e r i n Shadwick King the death of his wife, Kathleen King, 32.

Her body was found July 6 on railroad tracks less than a halfmile from their Geneva home.

He is accused of killing his wife and then placing her body on the railroad tracks. Her cause of death was ruled to be asphyxiation, prosecutors have said.

King’s attorney, Kane

County Public Defender Kelli Childress, filed a request for a speedy trial in late August.

Hallock is expected to hear arguments next month concerning Childress’ request to get witnesses’ contact information from the Union Pacific Railroad.

She described the witnesses as two dispatchers, including one who received the call from the conductor at the scene. Nobody else was a witness to what the conductor said, she said.

Last month, Hallock denied the railroad’s motion for a protective order for a subpoenaed video recorded on the Union Pacific West line between West Chicago and Geneva from the morning of July 6.

Following that decision, an attorney representing Union Pacific gave both Childress and Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams an envelope containing a disc with instructions on how to view the contents. King has remained in the Kane County jail since July on a $1.5 million bond, according to online records.

NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Firefighters Association’s annual turkey raffle helps bring the community together, organizers said.

“The community really comes out for it,” North Aurora Fire Chief Ryan Lambert said. “We are blessed. It’s been great.”

The turkey raffle will be from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday in the fire department’s apparatus/storage and maintenance building, north of the main fire station, 2 N. Monroe St., North Aurora.

For more than 50 years, the firefighters association has hosted the event, which itself gives back to the community.

The event attracts between 500 to 1,000 people, Lambert said.

During the raffle, firefight-

ers will sell tickets. Firefighters will spin a wheel, and if a winning number comes up, that person can choose between frozen turkeys, hams, trays of steaks and pork chops.

There will be a grand prize cash drawing on the second night, as well as progressive cash drawings both nights.

The event raises money for several community activities and groups, such as Operation Christmas, the North Aurora Pet Parade, the North Aurora Mothers Club, the North Aurora Lions Club and the North Aurora Baseball Association, along with education programs and scholarships.

Tickets for the grand prize drawing are $10 each and are being sold in advance by North Aurora firefighters or at the fire station.

Elburn will pay more for road salt

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – After a cold and snowy winter that featured a high demand for road salt throughout the region, the cost for this season’s salt supply is going up.

The Elburn Village Board this week approved a request to spend $36,000 for 450 tons of salt, at a price of $80 a ton. Last year, Elburn spent $24,458 for its salt supply and purchased 443 tons of salt.

John Nevenhoven, the village’s public works director, said there has been “an increase in the cost of salt.”

“Everybody saw last year, ‘Oh my goodness, we ran out of salt. Let’s get more this year,’ ” he said.

Also, officials approved a restructuring of the finance department. Earlier in the year, when an employee was on leave, the village established a position of temporary part-time office assistant for utility billing.

The employee on leave has since returned, but during that employee’s absence, village officials said there were efficiencies discovered that allowed a part-time office assistant to handle the load. The board voted to repeal the full-time utility billing clerk position and create the part-time office assistant position. The employee on leave is now in the part-time position.

The move was approved, but one trustee, Dave Gualdoni, voted against it. Gualdoni declined to comment further on the vote.

Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day You know, I kind of feel sorry for Thanksgiving. For one thing, the gap between Halloween and Christmastime certainly shrinks every year.

One minute you’re gaining five pounds and two new cavities by munching on pounds of leftover Halloween candy, and the next thing you know you’re trying not to fall off a ladder while putting up Christmas lights outside. (Right, Dad?) Thanksgiving clearly doesn’t get enough attention.

To illustrate, simply flip through the weekly ad papers right now and take a quick glance. I bet there are a lot more snowmen and Christmas trees being marketed than cornucopias. Most stores have already transformed into a glistening winter wonderland, forcing Thanksgiving fans to sulk in the lonely back corner.

Even so, while shoppers and stores seem to favor December’s holidays, there’s no doubt most children aren’t excessively eager for Thanksgiving either.

When I was a young kid, Thanksgiving was sort of a dull day. I associated Thanksgiving with pilgrims and the Mayflower since that’s what I was taught in school. Yet, that still never pumped me up for the day. Really, the only thing my family and I ever did for this holiday was chat and eat food at my grandparents’ home, and that was nothing out of the ordinary to begin with.

As a child, I despised all the Thanksgiving must-have foods like stuffing and green bean casserole since my immature taste buds only craved bread and Jell-O pudding. I mean, the annual parade on TV didn’t even peak my interest, and I never truly understood the complete significance of “giving thanks.” Thanksgiving Day to my young self was just another few days off of school.

Basically, it was a roadblock placed in the way before the glorious month of December.

Certainly, I can relate.

Nowadays, every Thanksgiving morning I plant myself in front of my family room TV to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s totally different from when I was a child.

The dazzling uniquethemed floats, enormous balloons and cheerful, clean-cut performances are all aspects of the parade that I have come to appreciate. Sure, I sort of feel like I’m the only 17-yearold who actually really loves watching the parade, but whatever, I’m not ashamed to admit it.

I’m also pleased to state that my taste buds have come a long way. Instead of pushing the green bean casserole and stuffing aside, I often take as many helpings of those as I can possibly stomach.

I’ve even started the tradition of making my grandma’s signature pistachio pudding every Thanksgiving. I get the opportunity to flaunt my creation to my family members by showing off the fact that I’ve contributed to the enormous feast. Of course, my grandma makes 99 percent of the dinner, but I like to think my one dish outshines even the turkey.

Honestly, I’ve come to enjoy the simplicity and relaxation of Thanksgiving. I believe I just grew up. Now, being with family, sharing timeless stories and consuming scrumptious delights are unquestionably good enough for me.

Writing the ‘Great American Novel’ Residents participate in National Novel Writing Month

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Marte Freke Smiewec started writing her novel “The Woodsman” in 2009, but never got around to finishing it.

“I just kind of forgot about it over the years,” said the 32-year-old St. Charles resident.

Smiewec is determined to finish the novel this month as part of National Novel Writing Month, a free global event started in 1999. More than 300,000 people participated in the event last year.

Marte Freke Smiewec attended a Smiewec write-in event earlier this month at the Geneva Public Library and got right to work with pencil and paper in hand. She ended up filling four pages of a yellow legal pad.

“I just sat down, and I wrote whatever I felt like,” she said. “I like writing with pencil and paper. It feels more me.”

She is juggling writing a novel with being a new mother. Smiewec gave birth to Eliana in May. “I had my husband watch the baby during the write-in,” Smiewec said. “It was kind of nice for me to get away and just write.”

The goal for those participating in National Novel Writing Month is to complete a 50,000-plus word novel in 30 days. The Naperville region of National Novel Writing Month (also known as NaperWriMo) represents the cities and suburbs west of Chicago.

Along with the Geneva Public Library, several other area libraries held write-in events this month as part of National Novel Writing Month, including the Batavia Public Library, Messenger Public Library in North Aurora and the Aurora Public Library.

As the name of Smiewec’s novel indicates, “The Woodsman” revolves around a woodsman.

“He’s got a terrible secret,” she said.

“It’s kind of like a mystery. I’m influenced a lot by the works of Alan Paton. He was a South African writer. I loved the way he wrote and how a lot of morals came into his stories, so that’s kind of my model.”

Participating in National Novel Writing Month is a natural fit for the Geneva Public Library.

“We’ve been trying to do a lot in reach-

ing out to the writing community,” said Kimberly Gotches, the library’s public relations and adult program associate.

“We’ve been doing what we can to inspire writers.”

Five people came to the library’s writein event, including Smiewec. A writer herself, Gotches said she understands the obstacles that writers sometimes encounter.

“A lot of times, people just want to get out of their homes and have some place to go where they’re not distracted by doing dishes or the laundry,” Gotches said. “People really valued coming to the library and [having] two hours of uninterrupted time.

It was dedicated time for them to write.”

Those attending Messenger Public Library’s write-in event did not necessarily have to be working on a novel.

“It was for people who wanted to get together with other writers,” said Michelle Kurczak, head of youth and teen services

for Messenger Public Library. “Anybody who is interested in writing was welcome to come to our event.”

Five people also came to the Batavia Public Library’s write-in event. Christine Edison, the young adult librarian at the Batavia Public Library, said she admired the efforts of those who chose to participate in National Novel Writing Month.

“It really takes a lot of discipline,” Edison said. “You have to really be energized to decide that you are going to try and write 50,000 words in November. Having five people in our community come out and say they are going to go for it, I think that’s really cool.”

Edison said she will take advantage of the month to write her novel, a fantasy story.

“I’ve worked on a few stories before,” Edison said. “My trouble is finishing them. For me, if nothing else, it’s getting me writing every day, which is good.”

Those familiar with the music of singer-songwriter and guitarist Noah Gabriel might be surprised by his latest effort.

In the past, Gabriel’s music has been more associated with roots rock. But the debut album of his band, Noah’s Arcade, veers more toward alternative rock. The album was released earlier this year.

Noah’s Arcade, which also includes bassist/vocalist Chad Watson and drummer Justin O’Connell, will perform a free show Saturday, Nov. 22, at Two Brothers Roundhouse, 205 N. Broadway St., Aurora.

Jake Mack & The Last Stand also is on the bill. The music starts at 8:30 p.m.

The name Noah’s Arcade is taken from the movie “Wayne’s World,” which is set in Aurora. Gabriel and his wife, Rachel, live in Aurora.

Batavia’s Larson thrives on either end

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Ian Larson scored 25 goals and notched 16 assists, many of the spectacular variety.

Not bad for a left-back.

Larson wasn’t a left-back for Batavia – taking his much-envied left foot up top to lead the Bulldogs’ offensive onslaught – but serving as a defender is Larson’s past (with the Chicago Fire club team) and likely his future (at Division-I Duquesne University).

Larson, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Soccer Player of the Year, said translating his skill set from defense to prowling for goals wasn’t as tricky as it might seem.

“Just playing at a high level [during club season] and it being encouraged for the outside backs to get forward, I was playing defense but still able to get up and attack in games, so that definitely helped me out, and I kind of held on to some of my attacking skills I had from when I was a younger kid,” Larson said.

As well as he shows wherever he’s slotted, perhaps it’s no surprise Larson is content in either scenario.

“It’s definitely fun scoring goals, but I think my favorite position to play is left-back because I just get to see the whole field and dictate play and how our attack starts. So for me I think it’s most fun, but it’s also fun getting the glory and being able to score the goals,” Larson said.

He experienced plenty of that this fall, citing a two-goal night in the Bulldogs’ 2-1 win over archrival Geneva and the lone goal in a 1-0 victory against fellow Upstate Eight Conference River contender St. Charles East as especially meaningful strikes.

Larson’s scoring versatility made him especially dangerous, and teammate Kevin Collins said watching Larson whistle in dangerous free kicks was thrilling.

Collins considers Larson’s ability to thrive as a striker despite his defensive background is telling.

“It demonstrates how good of a player Ian Larson really is,” Collins said.

“You can put him anywhere and he will be the best player you see on the field.

It’s incredible to say I’ve played with him for three years. It was just fun to watch him this year.”

A four-year varsity player, Larson emerged as a known commodity during a strong junior season. Larson said he wasn’t as prepared last year as he was this year to deal with the extra attention from defenses, both mentally and strength-wise.

Gianfrancesco said Larson differs from some other high-end talents he’s been around in that he consistently keeps his ego in check.

“His leadership qualities, his making other people better on the team, I think that gets overlooked,” said Gianfrancesco, whose team advanced to a Class 3A sectional final. “It was easy to say ‘Well, you stop Ian, you stop us’ – that

might not be the case because I think he made some other people better just by being in practice and at games and the intensity that he brought.”

While a berth in the Class 3A Final Four would have been exhilarating, there wasn’t much more for Larson to squeeze from his senior season.

“At the beginning of the season, we made a list of team goals and we achieved all of them except one, and it was a pretty big list,” Larson said. “We kind of made it tough on us.”

Just not as tough as Larson made things on opponents.

Seiton a goal-setter and goal-stopper at North Central Nicki Seiton’s job is to stop goals.

Then why does she have so many?

A former Batavia Bulldog and current goalkeeper for the North Central College women’s soccer team, Seiton recently was named second team all-conference for her strong season. But that’s just one goal checked off her checklist.

It’s a great honor, she said, but it just means it’s time to move onto the next thing on her to-do list.

“I completed one of my goals, which was to make all-conference by my junior year. I made second team this year, so I was really pleased

“But there’s always room to improve. I’m really looking forward to continuing to work with our goalie trainer. His first year was last year, so it was really nice this year, being comfortable working with him again. I’m looking to improve next year, and my new goal is to make first team all-conference by my senior year.

“Actually, the first people I texted were my goalie trainers

that I’d worked with over the summer and from the past. I texted them right away and told them what I did and what my new goal is so we can instantly start planning and working toward my next goal.”

The use of the word “goal” so frequently seemed thematically appropriate for a soccer player, and Seiton has a lot of them clearly outlined. In two years at North Central College, she’s done a good job of completing what she’s set out to do. In addition to that most recent honor, she was also among her conference’s all-academic honorees as a freshman.

Academics are just as important to Seiton as athletics, and it should come as no surprise her attitude is similar off the field as it is on it.

“I’m always shooting to have straight As,” she said.

“That was always a big part of how I was raised, was to really focus on academics. So I’m really focusing on having straight As and keeping a high GPA and just keeping my grades up.

“It’s great to be rewarded and seen for working hard. All athletes know that balancing school and athletics is a difficult balance. But that’s

After going 0-4 the previous two years in the IHSA Class 2A Final Four, the Wheaton Academy boys soccer team felt the heat in its third straight appearance.

But this year’s Warriors were too talented, too focused and too poised to settle for anything less than the program’s first state championship.

“It was huge for our program,” said Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke, the Kane County Chronicle’s Boys Soccer Coach of the Year. “I think there was an extra level of pressure that we don’t go back and do the exact same thing, and that Jeff Brooke just increased how proud I was for guys to be able to play and perform our style of soccer really when the pressure was on and when the stakes were that high.”

The Warriors enjoyed a dream season, losing just once – to Morton – and tying Batavia in a match the Warriors played without elite forward Ty Seager.

Brooke figured the Warriors were in line for a banner season after consecutive fourth-place state finishes.

“To go 25-1-1 and make the run in the playoffs and get some national rankings from some different organizations, I didn’t see that coming,” Brooke said. “That just reflects how guys developed their individual ability, buying into team chemistry. I think maybe halfway through the year, in the middle of the Pepsi tournament, we beat Libertyville, and that’s when we started to realize we have something special here, and the concentration probably got that much more crisp in terms of what we could do and what we all needed to do to get there.”

Burlington Central rolls over Oak Forest

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BURLINGTON – The Burlington Central girls basketball team used a combination of old and new in its 54-26 win over Oak Forest in Wednesday night’s Central Thanksgiving Tournament game.

Returning starter Kayla Ross from last year’s fourth place team in Class 3A provided most of the firepower, scoring 19 of the Rockets points.

“Ross’ play is unbelievable.

She’s all over the floor,” Rockets coach Mark Smith said.

“She has great quickness, a great defender. … I think the improvement she made this year is on her offensive game.

She has more confidence shooting the ball.”

With two other returning starters, Samantha Cruz and Samantha Pryor, sidelined with injuries, coach Mark Smith had to turn to his bench for the rest of his starting lineup.

Reserve Rebecca Gerke was tapped for one of the positions and responded by scoring 12, all in the second half.

“She had a huge second half,” Smith said of Gerke.

“She has great desire and want to get better. She use her strength and got clever around the basket.”

Both teams got off to a slow start. Central’s Alison Colby sank the first basket of the game three minutes into the first quarter. The Rockets’ fullcourt press held Oak Forest scoreless in the first eight minutes while the Bengals’ zone limited Central to only five baskets.

“I thought we were a little stagnant on offense in the first quarter but our defense really picked us up,” Smith said.

“Our defense was our offense.”

Oak Forest (0-2) finally got on the score board three minutes in the second quarter on a Taylor Sterkowitz free throw.

She also scored the Bengals first basket with 1:30 left in the second quarter.

The Rockets are now 2-0 in pool play in their tournament.

Central finishes pool play with two pool games Saturday. The Rockets face Woodstock in a morning game and play Belvidere North in the afternoon.

Frazier scores 36 in win RIVER FOREST – Junior forward Hannah Frazier scored a career high 36 points, leading the Batavia girls basketball team to a 62-30 win Wednesday against Christ the King at the Trinity Invitational.

“The biggest thing is our intensity level was much improved compared to Monday night [against Proviso East],” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “It’s easy to look that way because Proviso East is a very, very talented team but our intensity level was much better.

Seiton already is looking forward to the next things she can accomplish on the field, as well, and she has high hopes for a team that will lose no players heading into next season. Without a senior on this year’s roster, everyone figures to be well experienced and ready for the next campaign.

And unsurprisingly, Seiton’s also got some individual goals in mind, too.

“Last year, I believe I was first in conference in saves and saves per game. I looked at that list, and there’s another category in there for save percentage. And so that’s another goal that I’m working toward is to get my percentage up,” she said. “I had a lot of saves, but we allowed a lot of shots. So I’m working with the defense and everybody to try to tighten things up there, and hopefully I can get my save percentage higher.”

Whenever we have a party, she’ll invite friends without asking first, or by saying, “I told them it was OK to come.” It creates a problem because we plan our parties for a certain number of guests, and now there are two, three, sometimes even four more – often on short notice.

At my last gathering she invited not only her friends but also their children. It went from an intimate brunch for six to a party of 12. Eye drops provide relief for eyes swollen by allergies Dear Doctor K: I have allergies, and my eyes are affected the most.

They’re puffy, red and itchy. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Pollens, animal dander, dust mites and mold: The same allergens that cause sneezing and an itchy nose and throat can trigger allergy symptoms that affect your eyes, too. If your eyes are red and itchy, you may also have tearing, mucous discharge and swelling of your conjunctiva (the inside of your eyelid). This constellation of symptoms is known as allergic conjunctivitis. It can be uncomfortable, but it is not a threat to vision.

To help improve your symptoms, try to avoid whatever triggers your allergies. If you are allergic to cats, avoid them, or at least don’t touch your eyes when near one. If pollen is your nemesis, keep your windows closed. And keep an air purifier or air conditioner going in pollen season.

A simple but effective remedy is to place a cool, wet washcloth over your eyes. Also, use artificial tears (available without prescription) frequently. They’ll give you some relief and help wash away allergens.

Try not to rub your eyes. Doing so causes mast cells, which play a key role in allergic reactions,

If your symptoms appear occasionally, try one of the newer generation of antihistamines you can take by mouth. Antihistamines block the action of histamine, a major cause of itchy eyes. Over-the-counter options include loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and fexofenadine (Allegra). Others are available by prescription.

Another option is eye drops that contain mast cell stabilizers, which limit release of the inflammation-causing chemicals. During an allergy attack, eye drops work faster than pills taken by mouth.

Eye drops that contain antihistamines and decongestants (medicines that cause small blood vessels to narrow) are available over the counter. They can provide quick relief, particularly of the redness in the eye. But don’t use these medications for more than a week or two, as they can cause excessive narrowing of the blood vessels in your eye. And

be prepared for a little redness to return after you’ve stopped using them.

If your symptoms persist, try eye drops that combine a mast cell stabilizer and an antihistamine.

These drugs are available over the counter and by prescription.

If you use multiple types of eye drops, such as drops containing an antihistamine and artificial tears, don’t put both drops in your eye at the same time. Wait about five minutes between putting the two types of drops in your eye.

Otherwise, the second type you put in your eye may wash away the effects of the first type.

If your symptoms are severe and don’t improve with other medications, ask your doctor about prescription eye drops that contain corticosteroids. These medications help control inflammation, but they should only be used under the guidance of an eye specialist (ophthalmologist).

Without proper monitoring, corticosteroid eye drops can cause glaucoma, cataracts or other serious complications.

Dr. Wallace: I was an all-conference football player. I busted my rear practicing and getting beat up on the football field, and my only reward was a varsity letter that I could wear on my athletic jacket. At least that could be considered to be a big deal in the past – not anymore.

This year our principal, who has a son who toots a horn in the school band, is allowing all marching band members to get a school letter. The only difference between a band member’s letter and an athlete’s letter is that the athlete’s letter has a small symbol of the sport while the band letter has a small horn. From a distance, a person couldn’t tell the difference between an athlete and a horn blower.

I’m getting bruised during a football game, and the band member toots a horn at halftime.

The only bruise for a band member would be if a band member tripped and bumped a knee.

If athletes didn’t perform, a band wouldn’t be needed. I’m not the only athlete who feels cheated.

A lot of my teammates feel the same way.

If you think marching bands aren’t popular, the next time you watch a parade that features high school bands, notice the way the spectators respond.

But from your letter, it sounds to me like you’re missing a big point. You’re playing football because it makes you feel important. If you played for the love of the game, you’d be a lot less concerned about the status of one activity compared to another.

I love my father with all my heart and soul, but I’m afraid I will lose him to cancer if he doesn’t stop smoking. He smokes over two packs of cigarettes a day. He is 38 years old and has been smoking for 23 years. I feel that if he doesn’t quit soon, it will be too late.

He is now to the point that he coughs all the time and says his chest hurts.

If you have an interest in the history of bridge and its forerunners, buy “Bumblepuppy Days”

by Julian Laderman (Master Point Press). You will find it fascinating as you are led from whist to bridge whist to auction bridge to contract bridge.

The word bumblepuppy was used to mean whist being played poorly or without regard for rules, or a poor whist player. The term was popular in particular after the publication of “Whist; or Bumblepuppy?” in 1880.

Here is one of the few deals in the book. In the days of whist, there was no bidding. South named hearts as trumps, and West made the unfortunate opening lead of the club ace. Could South have now won all 13 tricks?

Well, he did in Robert Foster’s book, “Foster’s Encyclopedia of Games,” which was published in 1897.

Declarer ruffed the opening lead in the dummy and ran the diamond queen. When that won, South played a diamond to his jack, ruffed a club in the dummy, led a heart to his 10, played a spade to dummy’s ace, led a heart to his queen, cashed the heart ace, and took the club king.

When that established declarer’s club nine and eight, he claimed.

South took one spade, four hearts, three diamonds, three clubs and two club ruffs in the dummy.

No doubt you noticed the defense’s two errors. West’s opening lead was not best.

Any other card – even a low club – would have left South unable to win all 13 tricks. And East should have covered dummy’s diamond queen with his king.

Maybe in a reprint the author switched the diamond 10 and seven.
