8LOCAL BRIEFS Geneva to postpone hydrant flushing GENEVA – The city of Geneva will postpone fire hydrant flushing east of the Fox River until the spring because of cold weather forecasted for this week. City crews completed flushing hydrants on the west side earlier this month but had to temporarily suspend the

project since the Kirk Road water tower was emptied to be repainted.

The Public Works Department’s Water Division will resume hydrant flushing next year when temperatures become milder.

All Geneva residents can wash their clothes without any time restrictions. The city flushes its

hydrants to improve the overall quality of the water by cleaning the water mains of rust and corrosion and to ensure that all fire hydrants are working properly.

Districts facing rules regarding principal, teacher evaluations

I

n receiving a three-year contract to head Batavia School District 101, new Batavia School Superintendent Lisa Hichens’ contract is linked to student performance and academic performance within the district.

Illinois School Code requires that multiyear administrator contracts be linked to student performance and academic performance within a district. Hichens took over as superintendent in July after the retirement of former school superintendent Jack Barshinger.

Hichens said she believes the law “in general is a good idea.”

“But we have to be careful on placing too much emphasis on test scores,” she said. “We have to make sure the information is used for the good of students.”

Batavia Education Association President Tony Malay agreed.

“Our belief is that students are more than a test score,” Malay said. “Test scores don’t accurately reflect what they are learning. We don’t create thinkers, we create test takers.”

School districts soon will have to deal with more rules in regard to student performance.

In 2010, Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Performance Evaluation Reform Act, which requires all schools in Illinois to change how teachers’ and principals’ performance is measured.

Districts already are dealing with one part of the law.

Starting in September 2012, all principals had to be evaluated every year by trained and pre-qualified evaluators.

And starting Sept. 1, 2016, all Illinois school districts – including those in Kane County – must begin using new teacher evaluation systems that incorporate student growth measures.

Teachers, like any other professional, need a holistic evaluation and support that will guide them toward improvement.”

The act was written with teachers, administrators, union representatives and other people at the table, Fergus said.

But Rae Ann McNeilly, executive director of the Chica-

go-based Taxpayers United of America and a North Aurora resident, had some concerns about PERA. “It sounds like it is good,” McNeilly said. “What wouldn’t be good about a pay-for-performance environment? But the problem is that the unions are involved in selecting or establishing the criteria that is used in the performance evaluation.”

Under the law, district administrators must work with

teachers’ union representatives to develop evaluation systems that incorporates student growth. McNeilly said that creates a conflict of interest.

“That’s just not the role of the union,” McNeilly said.

“The union has no interest in the students or student outcomes. Their sole interest lies in helping teachers keep their jobs, whether they deserve to or not and helping them get

Organizations help tornado relief efforts

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Local organizations are heading up relief efforts for tornado victims in Coal City and Diamond along with hard-hit Washington.

Mary Ann Campagna, president of the St. Charles Girls’ Softball Association, will be collecting items from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Langum Park on Seventh Avenue in St. Charles.

“Their whole lives were changed in a couple of minutes,” Campagna said. “It really hits home. It’s not very far away from us.”

Among those items that are needed, Campagna said, are nonperishable food items; gift cards to Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Home Depot or Ace Hardware; fruit; bottled water; mops; towels; baby formula; school supplies; paper towels; dog and cat food; brown lunch bags; and batteries.

The supplies will be delivered to a Coal City dropoff point Saturday afternoon.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank on Tuesday delivered a truckload of food and supplies, including apples, granola bars, hand sanitizer and paper towels to the Coal City Food Pantry, which is one of the agencies it serves.

“We have been working with them to identify their needs,” said Donna Lake, Northern Illinois Food Bank’s communications director. “We will be in contact with them throughout the coming weeks.”

The pantry serves more than 100 households per month throughout the year, but that number is expected to increase because of the storm and subsequent power outages, which can lead to spoiled food.

Washington was espe cially hard hit by Sunday’s tornado outbreak. The city

is served by the Peoria Area Food Bank.

“We are directly in touch with them,” Lake said.

Donations to the Northern Illinois Food Bank can be sent to 273 Dearborn Court, Geneva, IL 60134 or by calling 630-443-6910. To donate via phone, text “FOOD” to 52000.

Donations for Washington relief efforts also can be dropped off at the Batavia Park District’s Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St. Blankets, bottled water, personal hygiene supplies, plastic totes and coats are some of the items that are needed, fitness director Kathy Freedlund said.

Items should be dropped off by Friday so they can be delivered to Washington this weekend.

Geneva Smiles Dental, at 477 S. Third St., Suite 142, Geneva, will be collecting donations this week and will be dropping them off at the Batavia Park District’s Civic Center on Friday.

The Buckman family in Elgin on Tuesday collected items for Washington tornado victims.

Trucks will be loaded up today to leave early Thursday morning.

Larsen’s Light Show ready for prime time

alagattolla@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Larsen’s Light Show is headed for a prominent spot on a national TV series.

Brian Larsen, whose show annually attracts long lines of cars to his home at 42W891 Beith Road in Campton Hills, said Tuesday that the home will be among those featured on “The Great Christmas Light Fight.”

Episodes of the show will air in December, starting with an hourlong show at 8 p.m. Dec. 9.

Then there will be twohour shows at 8 p.m. Dec. 16 and 8 p.m. Dec. 23. Larsen’s home will be among 20 to be featured on the show, which is billed as “a new competition series” in which homes are decorated “to the extreme for Christmas.”

“To be recognized as one of the top 20 light shows in the country is pretty big,” Larsen said.

Larsen said he knows the house already has been a destination for many, with dozens of cars often parked to get a glimpse of the show, which features 1 million lights synchronized to music. Anticipating even bigger crowds, Larsen has built a parking lot near his home, which can accommodate 40 cars.

The shows will start at 5 p.m. Thanksgiving night and run through Jan. 2. Larsen said the shows will be shortened, which should help keep the lines moving. Also, he said there will be requests for a $7 donation, with boxes in the parking lot and on the

Putting this year’s show together was a challenge, Larsen said. Because of the rules of the contest, he had only 21 days – he called it “21 grueling days” – to set up the display.

Parking still will be allowed on Beith Road, but

cars must be facing east and situated to the west of his house.

Drivers facing west could be ticketed by the Campton Hills Police Department.

Larsen said he never had this in mind when he started his show, which is going on for its seventh year.

“It was strictly to try to create family traditions for people,” he said. “It’s something to do, to get the kids in the car and grab some hot cocoa. … Like back in the days when families were really close, and make it a family tradition to come and watch the Larsen lights.”

Every year Foland, whose family had owned the former Batavia Bowl, celebrated his “annual 59th birthday party” by collecting nonperishable food items for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

“It was very important for him to give back to Batavia,” said his daughter, Jodi Foland. “He wasn’t going to get any older than 59. That’s what he would tell people.”

Dick Foland died in October being diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in July. He was 75.

She was a volunteer at Blazing Prairie Stars and Equine Dreams, after discovering it on her own at the age of 14.

Anna was a proud graduate of Batavia High School in 2011 and was working toward her master’s degree in occupational therapy at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. She enjoyed horseback riding, barrel racing, being on the farm, swimming, softball and helping the disabled, but her greatest love of all was her family and friends.

using the library and are asking for more programming and materials, officials said.

“The library polled the community, and 63 percent of respondents said they would support an increase in operating funds to allow the library to be open every day, purchase new materials and add programming,” Dolin said.

“Almost 500 people participated,” she said. “Last year we did a survey and got 110 responses. This was a much broader group of people.”

But other factors point to the possibility of success this time, such as library use going up from 54 percent in 2009 to 74 percent in 2013, Dolan said. And the library processes 100 or more requests for library cards every month.

“We are making progress, but we are as stretched as we

can go, maxed out,” Dolan said. “Staff comes to me and ask, ‘Can I do this?’ and we just don’t have the money to do some of those things that would be wonderful to do. ...

There are more people [that] are coming here; our use is jumping like crazy.”

Other issues are factors as well, such as not being able to keep up the new $8 million library building they moved into in 2009.

The library also cannot afford to hire more staff and be open more hours.

“We have almost as many volunteers as paid people,” Dolan said.

In a separate poll sponsored by the village, most people thought they needed more programming because they want more to do, including shopping, she said.

“The library can fill some of that if we put our materials out face front – books movies, video games. At least this is a place to go in the community without a cost to go in,” Dolan said.

In 2010, the a 10th referendum request asked for an increase of 11 cents to bring the library’s operating rate up to 20 cents.

It was soundly defeated 1,925 to 930, according to official results.

In announcing the new referendum, the library said it has cut costs, received grant funding, and reallocated funds over the past two years allowing it to buy new print and electronic books, movies, music and video games and to add nine hours and one day a week, going from 41 hours to 50 hours.

While the library now is open Sunday afternoons and Mondays, it is closed Fridays.

Dolan said with costs rising in nearly every area of the budget, it would be difficult to maintain service at the current level without a rate increase.

Longtime library supporter Pat Graceffa, who was just appointed to fill a board vacancy, said she also supports the decision to go to referendum.

“I would like to remind the taxpayers in our district that the library, unlike almost every other taxing body in our area, has never had a tax increase in the 50 years of our existence,” Graceffa said in an email response to a question. “The library has made every cut possible. ... I am hoping the community will be there for the library when it is time to vote to help us help our patrons.”

SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove Public Library officials have committed themselves to asking voters for a rate increase on the March 18 primary ballot, the district’s 11th request.

The board voted 6-0 recently for what is a smaller request than in the past. Library Director Carol Dolin said the request is for a 7.6cent increase to a rate of 20.6 cents per $100 equalized assessed valuation. The current rate is 12.4 cents.

If voters approve, it would raise $300,000 more in tax revenue, to $892,000 from just under $600,000, according to the referendum documents.

The increase would cost the owner of a $100,000 house $25.64 more in taxes.

Visitors center opens, adds honors for Daniel

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – About 100 people packed into the new Geneva Visitors Center, 10 S. Third St., for an open house and ribbon-cutting Tuesday celebrating the completion and opening of the new welcome center.

“We’re really happy to open the visitors center tonight,” said Chamber President Jean Gaines. “It’s a very exciting place for Geneva to welcome visitors. As you know, we have thousands of visitors a year and we just want to make them feel welcome and enjoy Geneva.”

A street-level visitors center was a long-term goal for the chamber, which maintains its offices upstairs.

The chamber received a $50,000 Riverboat Grant toward the approximately $100,000 needed to remodel the space, making up the difference from its reserve funds, said board of directors chairman Scott Lebin.

As chamber members circulated and checked out the renovation, they praised the design and what it means for the community.

Jim Emma of Nova Communications in Geneva said the new center is “absolutely beautiful.”

“It took a little bit of time to create, but it turned out fabulous,” Emma said. “It’s got all the state-of-the-art voice data equipment, projectors and TV.” “It is gorgeous in here,” added Joe Stanton, downtown business owner and developer. “They did a great job in here. This has been a long time coming.”

The conference room is named for Jamie Daniel, 91, founder of Miscella Real Estate, to honor her for her commitment to the chamber and

contributions to the community.

Ingersoll said it was appropriate the room be named for Daniel.

“The fact that they’re honoring Jamie Daniel, who has been such a pivotal person in the town of Geneva for years,” Ingersoll said. “Fabulous lady.”

Daniel was further honored with a chocolate sculpture by Chef Alain Roby of the All-Chocolate Kitchen, a replica of a bronze sculpture that was not yet finished which will be put in the conference room. Daniel is historian emerita for the Geneva History Center.

Daniel also was honored with a granite paving brick as the first stone to be put in for a walkway project, “ambassador, champion, benefactor, historian.”

“Truly, Jamie has been an inspiration to us all,” Lebin said. “We are glad that you are going to continue to be involved in Geneva and continue to support Geneva. Every time we sit in our conference room, we will remember you ... We love you.”

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting began discussing how much financial assistance to give Batavia Enterprises for the construction of a new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia.

Batavia Enterprises is seeking $1.5 million in financial assistance and ownership of the adjacent city-owned land. City staff has recommended the company receive $850,000 in tax increment financing incentive and the transfer of city-owned property for a nominal fee of $1.

The city owned property currently accommodates 53 public parking spaces.

The proposed site plan requires the reconfiguration of parking and allows for the replacement of lost public parking, totaling about 53 to 56 spaces.

Some aldermen voiced concerns about the proposal, including First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien.

“This is going to take everything out of our TIF,” O’Brien said. “There will be nothing else in the future for anybody else.”

Total project costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated to reach about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of $520,250.

Because the property has poor

soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

In addition, a large storm drain line that runs through the city-owned portion of the property. The line acts as an overflow route from the southern tip of Depot Pond to a point in the Fox River just north of the city of Batavia’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency garage.

Batavia Enterprises has said that if the line has to be moved, it would cost about $250,000.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza.

The plans for the store have elicited debate in part because the store would be set back about 70 feet from Wilson Street.

The city’s zoning code requires a front building setback to be 10 feet or less.

Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey has said that construction of the new store must begin by March to deliver the building to Walgreens corporate leaders by the end of September 2014.

The project has been in the planning stages since 2010.

I heard about these changing requirements firsthand at a National Council for Workforce Education conference I attended recently.

There, manufacturing industry panelists stressed the need for workers with critical thinking and creative design skills, along with leadership and collaborative abilities.

This next generation of manufacturers – versatile innovators capable of integrating creativity, design, prototyping and fabrication – can get started here at Wau-

A new capstone course set to debut in the fall of 2014 will foster collaboration among faculty in these areas and allow students to see a class project all the way through from product design to CAD to production.

Thanks to a Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant awarded to the Illinois Network for

Advanced Manufacturing (INAM), we have been able to improve our machining lab with seven additional Haas CNC machines and upgraded manual equipment. We are also waiting for a robotic arm to arrive any day.

In addition to this updated machining lab, the college’s Sugar Grove campus also features a metrology lab and a hydraulics/pneumatics lab.

Plus, we give students the chance to practice on industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, Inventor and Mastercam.

While the manufacturing courses and programs at Waubonsee provide a solid foundation, we encourage students to further improve and demonstrate their skills with industry certifications through organizations such as the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) or the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC).

Of course, before they can do any of this, students have to first get excited about and interested in the field of modern manufacturing.

On Nov. 1, nearly 300 local high school students were introduced to the field at the seventh annual Manufacturing Career Awareness Event at Waubonsee’s Sugar Grove campus. Sponsored by the Valley Industrial Association, Aurora Economic Development Commission, River Valley Workforce Investment Board, the Valley Education to Employment System (VALEES) and Waubonsee, the event featured demonstrations and exhibits from 20 local manufacturers, with representatives available to answer students’ questions about jobs in the industry.

The students and manufacturers also were able to take a tour of Waubonsee’s manufacturing labs and facilities.

In the coming months, we look forward to hosting more events so that we may continue building relationships with employers and students while also sharing our excitement about our upgraded manufacturing programs and the wonderful career opportunities to which they can lead.

Malay disagreed.

“We do have an interest in our profession in maintaining high standards, just like doctors and lawyers and accountants,” Malay said. “Who better to evaluate teachers than the educational professionals we are? Tell me people that would be more qualified than the people who work with children on a daily basis.”

McNeilly also was upset that performance evaluations of teachers, principals and superintendents are exempt

from Freedom of Information requests.

“You have a right to know if your child’s teacher or principal have poor performance evaluations,” McNeilly said. “That’s all part of the picture.”

St. Charles School Superintendent Donald Schlomann said he is concerned that PERA is taking away local control.

“PERA was really negotiated at the state level, not at the local level,” Schlomann said. “It feels a great deal that you are starting to lose local control. Everybody has got to be the same. Whether you are teaching in an inner-city school in Chicago or if you are teaching in St. Charles, you’ve got the same expectations and same goals that you’ve got to meet.”

ELBURN – A statue of an ice cream cone that sits atop Alice’s Place in Elburn apparently was knocked over by wind during Sunday’s storms, Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said.

Smith said that wasn’t the only damage to the building caused by wind. Part of the roof also was disturbed at the restaurant, located in the 200 block of South Main Street.

Smith said he did not have an estimate of the damage.

“It didn’t blow off the building,” he said of the three-dimensional ice cream cone figure. “It was because of the weather on Sunday.”

A phone number listed

on the Alice’s Place Facebook page was not answered Tuesday. The restaurant has closed for the season.

Alice’s Place seemed to bear the brunt of any weather-related damage in Elburn on Sunday. Storms led the National Weather Service to temporarily issue a tornado watch for the area on Sunday afternoon. Tornadoes were reported in other parts of the state, including one that touched down in Washington near Peoria.

A wind advisory warned of 45 to 50 mph gusts. Smith said no other major damage was reported in the area.

“There were just a few limbs down here,” he said. “I don’t believe we’ve had anything bad.”

Dunkin’ Donuts gets green light Other issues face debate in Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A Dunkin’ Donuts shop on Route 47 got the go-ahead from the Elburn Village Board, but trustees engaged in a debate about other topics at Monday night’s meeting.

The village won’t charge the Elburn Chamber of Commerce for help provided by police at the Christmas Stroll, and village trustees won’t go back to meeting four times a month, at least for the time being.

Also, discussion on the village’s tax levy is headed for a public hearing. That will be at the next meeting, which is set for 6:45 p.m. Dec. 2 at Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

The hearing is necessary because the total amount levied – $824,000 – represents an 18.6 percent increase over last year’s figure of $695,001.69. Officials said they do not expect to receive the full amount requested.

The discussion on Dunkin’ Donuts was quick. The location is to be near the Jewel store at Route 47 and Prairie Valley Street, Elburn.

Much of the lively discussion took place at the Committee of the Whole meeting that immediately followed the Elburn Village Board meeting. Trustees have followed that format for the past few months, which was a change.

Previously, they had the meetings in alternating weeks – with village board meetings on the first and third Monday of each month, and committee of the whole meetings on the second and fourth meeting of each month.

Although several trustees said they favored a return to having four meetings a month, Village President Dave Anderson said he strongly preferred the current schedule. He said it helps keep discussion focused, and it allows officials such as Village Administrator Erin Willret to work on oth-

er matters, rather than spend so much time preparing the packets for meetings.

Trustee Ken Anderson, who also favored keeping the two-meetings-a-month format, pointed out that special meetings are possible at any time, if called for by the village president or by any two trustees. But board member Pat Schuberg said trustees might be reluctant to call such a meeting, thinking such a request would have to meet a high standard to be considered worthy. But Ken Anderson said it could be as simple as wanting to call a meeting because more discussion is needed on a critical topic, such as the budget.

Trustee Jeff Walter, who had pushed for more frequent meetings, was among those who acknowledged that there had not yet been a full year of the twice-a-month schedule, and he would be willing to evaluate after a year had passed.

“Let’s give it a full year,” Walter said.

There also was talk on whether to charge the Elburn Chamber of Commerce for police assistance at the Christmas Stroll event, which is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6. Police duties at the event, which will be at several locations in town, typically will include helping residents to cross at intersections, among other tasks. There was a debate about whether such rules should apply to other such events in town, but Dave Anderson said that since the festival was fast approaching, guidance was necessary about the event.

“There are two choices,” he said. “We elect to charge for any extra duty time … or we donate the extra time, on this issue and this issue only.”

Trustees indicated that the time would be donated, though Walter said the issue needs more discussion.

“We still need a village policy,” he said.

So it is no surprise that so many Chicagoland families feel a personal loss by the closing of such a traditional part of their own lives.

There has been a lot of speculation as to how the grocery industry might try to fill this void. Will it be another big box operator with bulk-rate prices, or a smaller specialty store with quality that’s impossible to mass produce? In a region as

diverse as Chicagoland, either is a likely possibility. What’s certain though, grocers in Chicago only have success when they commit to selling good food to good people, not managing data on a spreadsheet. The successor to Dominick’s legacy will be a grocer who serves its neighbors rather than sells to consumers.

It will be one that, as my family has taught for generation, “feeds your family well.” For this, we will all be better off and the tradition of Dominick’s will live on.

On Feb. 15, a 13,000-ton rock plunged through the skies above Chelyabinsk, Russia. It shone 30 times brighter than the sun, and hurtled at 42,000 miles per hour toward a city of more than a million people.

As the rock broke apart during its fiery descent, it dispersed energy equivalent to 500 kilotons of TNT, shattering thousands of windows.

Some 1,500 people were injured, and shock waves caused a ribbon of damage extending 55 miles on either side of the meteor’s path.

Witnesses thought a nuclear war was upon them. Luckily, no one died.

This incident alone might not be cause to start worrying about death by asteroid.

But new research suggests that space rocks as large as the one that fell over Chelyabinsk – about 62 feet across – are three to five times more numerous than scientists had realized. The study, led by Peter Brown at the University of Western Ontario, also found that larger and more dangerous ones are unexpectedly abundant.

In other words, alien projectiles pose a serious threat.

Is it a manageable one?

Astronomers at the University of Hawaii are working on one solution. Their system, called ATLAS, will deploy eight small telescopes to survey the entire sky twice each night in search of incoming asteroids, starting in 2015. ATLAS won’t peer

as deeply into space as other detection systems – such as the Pan- STARRS facility, which hunts for “killer asteroids” that are decades from colliding with Earth – but it should find imminent threats more efficiently. If it works as planned, an international network of such systems could offer low-cost early warning.

With better knowledge of how alien objects fall when they enter Earth’s atmosphere, it should be possible to determine the likely path of the next meteor, ensure people in harm’s way are informed or evacuated, and prepare an emergency response. With a few days’ warning in Chelyabinsk, officials could have urged residents simply to stay away from windows; shattered glass caused almost all the reported injuries.

Larger asteroids, though, remain a different story.

NASA and other space watchers are making progress on their next goal of cataloging near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters, but the cosmos is still full of nasty surprises. In just the past few weeks, NASA has discovered three huge new space rocks, two of them initially estimated to be 20 kilometers wide. Although these won’t threaten Earth any time soon, the find was alarming.

If such a behemoth was on a collision course with Earth, disaster planning wouldn’t be enough: We’d need a strategy for deflecting it.

TEACHABLE MOMENTS Google RISE winner Messina shares computer skills with Kaneland middle school students

UGAR GROVE – The world of computer science might be intimidating to some, appearing to be a complicated concept that they think they never could comprehend.

Nick Messina understands.

“When you first look at it, you have no idea. … ‘Oh wow, whoever knows this is a genius,’ ” he said. “But when you really start to figure it out, it’s like, ‘Wow, this kind of makes sense.’ ” Messina is a recent Kaneland graduate and part of a team – representing the Kaneland-based Fox Valley Career Center – to win a prestigious Google RISE Award. Part of that achievement included the teaching of after-school classes at Kaneland Harter Middle School, and Messina, now a student at Waubonsee Community, has returned to that role.

Messina, through the Sugar Grove Park District, is teaching a class – beginners computer science after school. Although his current class size is small – five students – there will continue to be opportunities. Kathy Malloy, the program director for the park district, said the endeavor has been successful, so it will be continued.

Messina has credentials.

He joined with Stephen McCracken, Marshall Farthing and Jack Grimes to journey to Eminence, Mo., to bring workshops to students there.

They won a gold medal at the National Skills USA competition.

Messina said there aren’t enough students giving computer science a try. He laughed a little when talking about how he got started.

“I was pretty hooked on video games at the time,” he said. “I saw game programming and thought, ‘Cool, I’ve been playing ‘Call of Duty,’ and I’m in the zone for that,’ ” he said.

But his interests now extend far beyond video games.

In fact, he said, “I haven’t touched a game in well over a month, and I still like what I’m doing.”

Not all students find the experience to be as rewarding, he said, but that’s OK, too.

“I have some sixth-graders who were beyond what I was

expecting,” he said. “Some of them have difficulty, but that’s probably because they realized it wasn’t for them. At least they had the opportunity to experience it.”

As for Messina, he understands that some would see what he’s doing and think “this guy is a computer expert. But that’s totally not the case. There’s so much I don’t

know, and so much I can know.”

At Waubonsee, he’s taking an introduction to C++, which he said “is actually going pretty fast, and you’re getting a real taste of programming.” And at Kaneland, he’s been working as a computer technician, which is “very similar to what I plan to do as a career.” He

ultimately hopes to become a programmer, which he said is all about problem solving.

His big goal is that more students get the chance to experience that, and he hopes that more will take the step, just the way he did.

“It was definitely an eye-opener for me,” he said.

“It would be cool to have more kids figure it out.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Liquor Commission on Monday discussed its proposed late-night permit fees, which if approved by the City Council would allow bars to stay open later.

Under the proposal, the closing time for bars would be at midnight, but liquor licensees can apply for latenight permits to stay open until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. The later permits would cost extra, and bars can be denied based on their history with police calls.

The city has 23 classes of liquor licenses, and each has its own fee schedule.

As an example, Mayor and Liquor Commissioner Ray Rogina said according to the proposal, a licensee with a base license renewal fee of $1,200 that wishes to stay open until 1 a.m. would pay an additional $800 annually, which would total $2,000. A licensee with a base renewal fee of $1,200 wishing to stay open until 2 a.m. would be charged an additional $2,300, with a total renewal fee of $3,500.

“You want to stay open until 2 o’clock, but that’s going to cost you,” he said. “It’s a privilege. I, for one, have no problem stating it. That’s the reason for the proposal.”

He said licensees who apply for the late-night permits would be reviewed by the City Council, which would include looking at the bar’s track record for incidents involving police. City Administrator Mark Koenen said the city shouldn’t count on the permit fees as a revenue stream, and

noted that the additional cost would go toward general city expenses in the future.

Rogina said the city would “certainly entertain” inviting all liquor licensees to City Hall for a meeting about the proposed permit fees before a vote is taken.

In other business, the Liquor Commission discussed a bar owner’s request to add a rooftop patio.

Rich Simpson of the Alibi Bar & Grill, 12 N. Third St., asked commissioners to consider allowing him to add an outdoor rooftop patio, as there’s no room to add an outdoor dining space at the ground level.

Some commissioners were hesitant to allow the request, including Ward 2 Alderwoman Rita Ann Payleitner, who noted that police have been called to the location 11 times between June and October of this year. Calls included fighting, battery and disorderly conduct.

“Some of those incidents could have proved fatal if they happened on the roof,” she said.

Rogina said he also had concerns about the addition of speakers on the roof, which could cause noise problems, as noise carries when it’s elevated. St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin shared Rogina’s concern.

“What’s the plan to mitigate noise downtown? When it’s 15 to 20 feet in the air, that sound is going to carry,” Lamkin said. “We have to think of the safety and neighborhood surrounding this. … I think those things need to be addressed.”

Parillo trades in goals to help team

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Anthony Parillo absorbed an ego hit to do what he thought was right for the Kaneland boys soccer team.

Parillo’s goal-scoring dipped but his value to the Knights soared this season, earning the senior midfielder Kane County Chronicle Boys Soccer Player of the Year honors.

To compensate for the graduation of Alex Gil, Parillo transitioned from an attacking midfielder in the past to a defensive-minded midfield role this season.

“When we had some scoring opportunities, I pushed up more for that, but I always maintained a good distance to where if I needed to be, I could get back quick,” Parillo said. “I was mostly looking to play the ball up to people so they could score or cross the ball in.”

“There were so many coaches who said ‘Why is No. 5 always winning these?’ ” Scott Parillo said. “These are against guys 6-2, 6-3, and he just kept winning them.”

But the most impressive maneuver Anthony Parillo made, arguably, came before the season even started, when he agreed to transition roles after scoring a team-high 19 goals for the Knights as a junior.

This season, that goal total was one-third of that, mostly by design.

“I think it takes great maturity to do that, especially last year when he scored so many

goals and this year he was asked to do something completely different, and he was OK with that,” Scott Parillo said. “He wanted to win. That’s what he wanted us to do. He wanted to do that for the team.”

Still, Parillo’s distributing skills loomed large in Kaneland’s attack, and he also occasionally reminded opponents of his thunderous striking potential, such as with a memorable, one-time blast against Sycamore in a Class 3A regional semifinal victory.

Parillo said it wasn’t until the Knights’ next and final match – a 1-0 loss to Burlington Central in the Sycamore Regional championship match – that he felt his first, major dose of frustration.

“I really wanted to get up and try to score some goals, but it didn’t happen,” he said.

The Knights finished the season 10-6-4, continuing a program upswing in recent years that coincides with Parillo’s four-year, varsity career.

A two-time all-state selec-

tion, Parillo was a National Soccer Coaches Association of the Year All-American nominee, advancing to the final 60 players chosen nationwide.

“Unfortunately he didn’t make the final 40, but it’s throughout the country – he’s an elite player,” Scott Parillo said. “You’re talking about college coaches, high school coaches from around the country that vote on these players. Obviously, he was doing something right to make it to that final 60 players. It’s truly remarkable.”

Parillo plans to take several college visits this winter, and his dad joked he might have to sell one of his other children to be able to afford the airfare.

He turned more serious when discussing how gratifying it’s been to coach his team-first son.

“I’m very happy he ended up being as great a player as he did, but it was a lot of fun, and I hope a lot of other coaches get to [have that experience],” he said.

Conference fluidity bubbles up again Tri-Cities athletic directors seem to understand why Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie Valley and Metea Valley appear on the verge of leaving the Upstate Eight Conference for the DuPage Valley Conference.

That doesn’t mean they have to like it.

Administrators at the three, Indian Prairie District 204 high schools recommended this week to the school board that each of the three schools move to the DVC effective fall 2015, meaning the expanded, 16-team UEC – with two, eightschool divisions – would be a one-shot deal next school year.

“I thought it was going to be great,” St. Charles East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld said. “I thought we were going to have probably the best conference in the state. That was a great conference, but I can understand if they wanted to leave [for the DVC], why they’d want to do that, too. But it kind of stinks we didn’t get to see what it was going to be like.”

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab The latest twist in the UEC/DVC tug-of-war – the conferences have swapped and poached schools from each other the past couple years leading to the current maneuvering – highlights a strikingly turbulent landscape for numerous area schools (more on that later).

As for the UEC, three of the conference’s largest, most successful and most comprehensive athletic programs appear headed out the door, provided the DVC signs off on the move as expected.

“We’ll probably try to still schedule [Neuqua, Waubonsie and Metea] as much as we can in all the sports we play them in … but it’s going to be a big loss for our conference, no doubt about it,” Sommerfeld said.

The UEC is slated to bump

up from 14 schools to 16 next school year with the arrivals of DVC defectors West Aurora and Glenbard East. Those moves came on the heels of Lake Park leaving the UEC for the DVC, replaced in the UEC this year by former DVC member West Chicago.

But the DVC’s cream-of-thecrop programs – the likes of Naperville Central, Naperville North, Wheaton Warrenville South – remain in the DVC, and speculation was rampant that the DVC would raid the “Valley” schools to replenish its ranks.

Now that appears to be reality, which would leave the UEC needing to add either one or three schools by fall 2015 to have the even number of schools needed for reasonable scheduling.

Geneva AD Jim Kafer is a veteran of such scenarios, with mixed results.

“It’s a funny thing – sometimes [new schools] fall right into your lap, and other times it looks like there’s no hope,”

Kafer said. “I know we ran into that in the North Suburban Conference when Fenton left many years ago. We thought we had a couple likely candidates, and that didn’t happen, and five years later, we finally brought in three new schools, so you just don’t know for sure. Sometimes it doesn’t take too long, other times it’s more of a struggle than you think.”

Neuqua, Waubonsie and Metea all are in the UEC’s Valley Division, opposite the River Division that houses each of the Tri-Cities schools, plus Elgin, Larkin and Streamwood. Aside from losing quality crossover matchups with that trio, sports such as girls gymnastics and boys and girls swimming – in which there are not separate divisions – could be in a scheduling bind going forward.

Batavia AD Dave Andrews is optimistic the UEC will figure out a workable solution in the months to come.

Eight is they’re committed to the Upstate Eight, so we’ll go through the process like we did last year [when West Aurora and Glenbard East were added],” Andrews said.

“It turned out good for us, and I’m very confident it’ll turn out good again.”

Remaining SCC schools in flux: When seven Suburban Christian Conference schools announced in the spring they were leaving for the Metro Suburban Conference in 201415, remaining SCC schools Marmion, Rosary, St. Francis, Aurora Christian, Montini and Marian Central pledged to stick together, eventually partnering with the Chicago Catholic League for football and soccer.

But with recent word that Marian Central is reneging on the plan to instead join the East Suburban Catholic Conference, Marmion AD Joe Chivari and his brethren are nearing a critical juncture.

BATAVIA – While the Batavia girls basketball team will lean on plenty of young players this season, that doesn’t mean experience has gone completely out the window.

In what she called her “last first high school basketball game” Tuesday night, Batavia senior Liza Fruendt came up with the biggest baskets at the biggest times in the Bulldogs’ 58-47, season-opening win over Glenbard South.

“It was good,” Fruendt said after scoring 20 points in the win. “We’re a young team. You could tell we had our lows, we had our highs.

We just played a really good defensive game, and I think that’s going to be our key all year. When we play our best defense, we’ll play our best basketball.”

After a close game much of the early going between the Bulldogs and Raiders, Fruendt exploded for nine points in the second quarter to give Batavia a 30-18 halftime lead. Then, after going scoreless in the third, she delivered nine more points

in the fourth quarter to make sure the Bulldogs kept that lead.

“We’re never going to mistake her for somebody who’s going to be methodical on the court. It’s always going to be a speed thing with her,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “She was just saying, ‘Was my shooting percentage awful?’ And I went, ‘Well, yeah it wasn’t great. But there was a lot of shots going to the hoop, and when we needed a couple buckets to finish the game off, you got them for us.’ There’s something to be said about when those buckets happen, and that was big for us as well.”

Trailing by double digits nearly the entire second half, Glenbard South cut the Batavia lead to five with just more than 2:30 remaining in the game. Shortly thereafter, Fruendt caught fire and made sure the Raiders wouldn’t get any closer.

She stole the ball, scored a fast-break layup and made the ensuing free throw to extend Batavia’s lead to seven with 1:30 left. With the game entering its final minute, she delivered back-to-back fast break layups to push

the game out of reach.

“I would have liked to be a little more consistent, but this was first-game jitters,” the Missouri State recruit said. “This was my last, first high school basketball game. It was a little bit emotional, so you do get the jitters. You’re like constantly, ‘Oh my gosh.’ And once we finally got settled down and could just play, it was all worked out. But consistency, I would liked it a little more. It was good.

When I needed to play my best defense and convert to offense, I did, so that was important.”

The youth movement for Batavia also showed some flashes of brilliance. Sophomore Hannah Frazier finished with 16 points, and freshman Mackenzie Foster had several big plays and saw plenty of time on the floor.

“It’s incredible,” Fruendt said of her young teammates. “They are getting better every single day. … They’re not acting like they’re underclassmen, they’re acting like they are upperclassmen and they belong on the floor during varsity basketball games.”

Trestman won’t take credit, but system has made McCown

By MARK POTASH Chicago Sun-Times Is it the quarterback or the offense? Bears coach Marc Trestman has neither the time nor the ego to take a bow.

“I would never put it on the system,” he said. “I would put it more on the work ethic of the player, his focus on doing his job well. Josh McCown [Josh McCown is] detail-oriented, just like Jay [Cutler] and quarterbacks who are efficient playing the game. Josh is one of those guys.”

With all due respect for Trestman’s modesty, it’s the system. It’s the players around McCown, too. But mostly it’s the system and coaching that have made McCown the NFL quarterback he always hoped to be.

It’s unlikely McCown’s work ethic or attention to detail was any different than

with any other team he’s been on in the NFL, and he never was this good. His career passer rating was 71.2 before he met Trestman. Even when he started 13 games with a young Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona in 2004, it was 74.1. The difference in Chicago is obvious.

“If I could be a quarterback for any coach in professional football, with no hesitation I would take [Trestman] as a coach, along with Matt Cavanaugh,” CBS analyst Phil Simms, a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, said Monday on “NFL Monday QB” on CBS Sports Network.

“And I want to run their offense. It’s so clear, so precise.

Jay Cutler was playing exceptionally well. Now we see Josh McCown – he knows what he’s doing on every play. You can tell there’s a calmness about him. Why are they so calm?

Because they are prepared and they feel good about what they’re doing going into the game.”

Rosary girls fall to Yorkville KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE AURORA – Rosary girls basketball coach Jessie Wilcox wasted no time using superlatives after Tuesday’s season opener against Yorkville in the Hoops Happenings tournament at IMSA. “It was probably the most crazy first game that I’ve ever been a part of,” she said.

Try this on for size: The Royals were in the double bonus by the end of the first quarter, Foxes coach Luke Engelhardt received an early technical foul and a fire alarm triggered a 15-minute delay in the third quarter.

The final score – Yorkville 52, Rosary 43 – nearly was an afterthought.

“Needless to say, it was a long, drawn-out game,” Wil-

cox said.

Rachel Choice and Quincy Kellett led the Royals offensively. Rosary opened the game on a 10-0 run.

In other Hoops Happenings action at nearby Aurora Christian, the host Eagles defeated Indian Creek, 45-41, behind double-figure scoring from Kirsten Madsen (17 points) and Alyssa Andersen (10).

Natasha Brown added six points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles.

Burlington Central exploring new conference • PREP ZONE Continued from page 28 “We’re just a skeleton of a conference right now,” Chivari said. “We are not sure exactly what the future holds. We have one plan just to exist next year with the four schools [Marmion is boys-only and Rosary girls-only] and pick up a lot of nonconference competitions – how long we could survive doing that, probably not long at all, maybe one year. Maybe we could attract four more schools to come to us. If not, we would certainly have to look at joining fulltime another conference, or creating a new one.”

Chivari said the Chicago Catholic League acted quickly on troubleshooting football scheduling in Marian’s absence; De La Salle was added to the Green Division to replace Marian. Some tinkering with the crossovers also was required.

The SCC schools’ plan was to remain independent and potentially expand its membership in other sports such as basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball, but with Marian out the door

so abruptly, a scheduling crisis is approaching fast.

Chivari said the SCC schools will be open-minded about any schools that want to join their ranks.

“The remaining SCC schools are hoping for other schools to consider membership with us regardless if they’re public or private, as long as they’re similar in nature of size and competitiveness,” Chivari said.

“We’d consider any school like that. I’m hoping other area public schools wouldn’t disregard membership with us just because we’re private schools, and the name of the conference might not be etched in stone any more, either.”

Burlington Central likely on the move: Burlington Central is aggressively exploring leaving the Big Northern Conference for a new, eight-team league that likely would include several of the current BNC East members, along with Woodstock and Woodstock North.

Monday – said several factors make the new conference appealing, including parting company with some of the smallest BNC members that don’t offer the levels that Central can field in several sports.

“It was enough in bigger sports that really created an uncomfortable feeling, would be the best way to put it,” Diversey said. “We missed out on a few lower-level football games, we missed out on a lot of JV soccer games.

Across the board, there were quite a few.”

Diversey said other incentives for a change are to do away with longer trips to some of the westernmost schools in the BNC, and a tighter enrollment range in the proposed new conference. Central (about 1,050 students) would still be the largest school in the new conference but its enrollment wouldn’t dwarf the smaller members the way it does in the BNC.

Me, I was a tubby little imp in Mrs. Chambers’ third-grade class at Mount View Elementary in Omaha, Neb. It was she who dropped the shocking news that President John F. Kennedy had been felled by an assassin’s bullet in Dallas. It marked my first, and still most memorable, encounter with death. It took me months to get over it. Or, at least I thought it did, because does anyone really get over such a tragedy when you’re just 9 years old? Or, any age, for that matter?

Perhaps that explains why Americans – even those whose parents weren’t even born until after 1963 – are so obsessed with the crime that allegedly ended “our nation’s innocence.”

But I think it’s more because it was America’s first communal video event, one brought directly into our living rooms courtesy of the big-three (and only three) networks. That would be CBS, NBC and ABC for you young’uns.

Our video fixation only multiplied with Life magazine’s release of the infamous Zapruder film, which captured the shooting in all its gruesome detail. From that point on, a nation of ghouls and conspiracy theorists became hooked on all things Kennedy, a jones that seemed to grow exponentially after the murder of JFK’s brother, Bobby, and the mysterious death of Mary Jo Kopechne while in the company of his

Greg Kinnear made the list for worst actor with an embarrassingly bad performance in “The Kennedys,” albeit picking up an Emmy nod for his work. youngest sibling, Ted. Sensing that growing fascination, Hollywood smartly decided to capitalize. But, curiously, it steered as clear as possible from depicting the actual assassination, opting instead to focus on either the president’s heroics during the Cuban Missile Crisis (“The Missiles of October,” “Thirteen Days”) or the family’s tawdry romantic entanglements (just about every TV miniseries from the excellent “Kennedy” to the ridiculous “The Kennedys”).

Then along came Oliver Stone. His Oscar-nominated “JFK” was a conspiracy theorist’s dream, implicating everyone from Castro to the mafia in the assassination. Only problem, precious little of it was based on fact, but, boy,

what a fun movie to watch, especially with that endless parade of Hollywood royalty continually popping up in cameos. Kennedy even got into the act, courtesy of the Zapruder film, which was meticulously re-enacted throughout with Steve Reed playing the president’s double.

According to the entertainment website IMDb, 24 others have portrayed JFK, beginning with Cliff Robertson in “PT-109” and carrying right on through to Rob Lowe in last weekend’s TV debut of “Killing Kennedy.” Who was the best? And who was the worst? And what is the definitive Kennedy movie or miniseries? Let’s take a look:

Husband’s drug use stops couple from having baby Dear Abby: My husband and I want to start a family, but until now our circumstances have not made this possible. After a big move and starting a new business, we have decided it’s about time.

My problem is my husband uses drugs to relieve stress. I don’t feel he abuses them; it just takes the edge off after a hard day’s work like a glass of wine does for me sometimes.

I would like him to stop taking the drugs while we are trying to conceive in case it could affect the baby. He is unwilling and it makes me crazy. I have decided that if he can’t do this, he isn’t ready to be a father. On the other hand, he’s a hard worker, and I wonder if by asking him to do this I am being selfish. Relief from hemorrhoids comes from simple strategies Dear Doctor K: What are some self-help strategies to treat hemorrhoids?

Dear Reader: Hemorrhoids are a common but painful and uncomfortable problem. Fortunately, simple measures can ease most hemorrhoid discomfort and help them heal.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins. Veins carry blood back to the heart. Hemorrhoids can develop in the anus and the rectum, just inside the anus. Many people have both. These swollen blood vessels can bleed. When they get inflamed, they can make bowel movements intensely painful. (I’ve put an illustration of hemorrhoids on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

I spoke with my long-time colleague Dr. Jacqueline Wolf, a gastroenterologist and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. She offered this advice to care for hemorrhoids: • Step up the fiber. Start by adding fiber to your diet. Fiber makes stools softer and easier to pass. It also reduces bleeding. Aim for 25 to 30 grams a day.

The best food sources of fiber include beans, broccoli, carrots, bran, whole grains and fresh fruits. You can also take a fiber

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff supplement. Try an over-thecounter powder such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel). Some of my patients prefer the newer soluble fiber preparations, such as dextrin.

(There are several brand names, but you can find dextrin in the “ingredients” list on the bottle.) To avoid bloating and gas, add fiber to your diet gradually over several days.

Dr. Wolf also recommends the following during flare-ups: Mix a tablespoon of mineral oil with applesauce or yogurt and eat it at breakfast or lunch. This allows stool to slide by more easily.

• Strain less. Don’t sit or strain on the toilet for long periods of time. This can cause more hemorrhoids and worsen symptoms.

Don’t delay bowel movements during flare-ups. Putting off bowel movements can worsen constipation, aggravating hemorrhoids. Elevate your feet with a step-stool as you sit on the toilet.

Doing so changes the position of

the rectum, making stools easier to pass.

• Consider off-the-shelf remedies. Many over-the-counter products, such as witch hazel-infused pads and soothing creams, are effective. Your doctor can also prescribe stronger preparations if needed.

• Don’t forget sitz baths. Simply soaking the inflamed area in warm water can help reduce inflammation and discomfort. The easiest way to do this is to sit in a bathtub filled with enough water to soak your behind. Some people alternate hot and cold water baths; some add vinegar, salt or baking soda to the water. I’m not sure any of this adds value.

If, despite these measures, symptoms worsen or don’t improve, you may need to talk to your doctor about various medical procedures. Some can be done in the office; some involve minor surgery. But the self-help strategies outlined above give relief to most people with hemorrhoids.

Boyfriend wants sex as birthday present Dr. Wallace: I made the mistake of saying, “we’ll see,” and now I’ve got a sex fiend for a boyfriend.

I’m 17 and my boyfriend turned 18 three weeks ago. We have been together for over eight months. A month before his birthday, I asked him what gift he wanted and he said sex. Since he had never been aggressive and he knew I was a virgin, I was surprised at his request. When he said he wanted sex (from me) for his birthday, I said, “we’ll see.” Well, that was a mistake because he took “we’ll see” to mean yes.

If he truly cares for you, he will respect your wishes. There’s no guarantee you won’t lose him by remaining true to yourself, but if he only wants you for sex, it wouldn’t be much of a loss.

Forget about saying, “we’ll see” when you really mean “no.”

Dr. Wallace: I am responding to the guy from Denver who was a football player and complained that the band members at his school also get a school letter that is equal to that for a varsity athlete letter, and all they do is “toot a horn.” The guy went on to say that band mem-

I am a friend of several students at my school who, as band members, do more than just “toot a horn.” They practice before school, after school and during summer break. I happen to be a varsity athlete letter winner (girl’s basketball) and I’m proud to say my boyfriend “toots a horn” (trumpet) in our award-winning marching band and, yes, he has earned his varsity letter and proudly wears it on his letter jacket.

I don’t understand why most male high school athletes think that only they should be letter winners. When it comes to the band, many athletes think the only thing bands do is play at halftime during football games. I believe that all students who participate in school-sponsored activities and practice before or after school deserve to be letter winners, and this includes all students in drama, choir and debate. – Jodi, Houston, Tex. Earlier this year, to lower production costs and make it easier to publish a bigger magazine in full color, Bridge Magazine went to online-only delivery. You print it out, say, on three-hole punched paper and store each issue in a ring binder.

Aimed at tournament players, it contains hands that you can bid with your partner, and bidding problems that you can answer to try to win one of four book prizes from Master Point Press.

There are various quizzes.

This one comes courtesy of Patrick Jourdain and Ron Tacchi. South gets to six hearts, but when West stupidly doubles, South runs to six no-trump. How should he plan the play after West leads the club queen?

There was no auction given in the magazine. In this sequence, North’s two no-trump is the Jacoby Forcing Raise. Three hearts promises a strong hand.

Four clubs and five diamonds are control-bids (cue-bids).

Clearly, West has king-queenthird or -fourth in hearts. The declarer, Andrzej Oglobin from Poland, won with his club king, played a diamond to the board and led the spade 10. When East covered with the queen, South took his four spades and three other diamonds. When West kept three hearts and one club, declarer cashed the club ace, then played a heart to his jack.

West won with his queen, but had to lead away from the kingsix of hearts into South’s ace-10.

Not ‘enough computer scientists’ Fox Valley Career Center instructor leads students to national honor MAPLE PARK – Science, technology, engineering and mathematics make up the STEM tag, and the subjects have become kind of a path toward a bright future, with the idea that those who pursue such fields will have strong opportunities for future employment.

Anna Schwein, a computer technology teacher at the Kaneland-based Fox Valley Career Center, wonders why there is “a little bit of a disconnect between computer science and STEM.” Anna “People look Schwein at computer science as something outside of STEM,” she said. “But computer science is really all about STEM.” Schwein has reasons to be excited about the field. She helped lead a group of students to a project in rural Missouri, an effort that led to accolades at a national level. The students – Nick Messina, Stephen McCracken, Marshall Farthing and Jack Grimes – would combine to win a prestigious Google RISE Award, an honor

Schwein and the students traveled to Eminence, Mo., to bring their program to that area, as well as others in Missouri. She would take trips to continue the effort, along with the students, for the Computer Science After School program.

It was a program that they first did at Kaneland Harter Middle School before, she said, “we decided to plow ahead and do this” and headed to Missouri.

She said what made the program special was the target audience – “rural kids and remote rural kids.”

“Our focus was to really get down to the Ozark Mountains. … They are in the middle of nowhere, and those kids are just kind of forgotten, but they’re just as bright,” she said.

The program lives on. Messina, who now attends Waubonsee Community College, teaches a CS After School class at the middle school, which is run through the Sugar Grove

Park District.

It’s an opportunity, she said, for youths who “don’t go into computer science because they don’t even know it’s there.” It’s a good option, she said, with many jobs available for those with the proper skills.

“We don’t have enough computer scientists,” she said.

However, she also added, “just because you get a degree in computer science doesn’t mean that you’re going to work.” But she believes there is a great opportunity for those who can get the skills and the passion for it.

The Fox Valley Career Center includes students from beyond Kaneland, as they also come from St. Charles East and St. Charles North, Burlington Central, Geneva, Batavia and West Aurora high schools.

She considers the students among the brightest, and she said some are serious about it, enough that they’ll take summer courses or “early-bird” physical education classes so they can attend.

“I think it’s kind of liberating because it lets you do whatever you want, and you can create things,” she said.

“There’s a lot of learning going on in Minecraft.”

Maybe that will lead to a career in computer science.

Maybe not. Schwein said “they may find out, this is not what I expected.” But if they do like it, she said they’ll find a career that includes good benefits and a possibility of a high salary.

And they shouldn’t fear going in, she said.

“There’s that traditional thought that if you’re going into computer science, you must be a geek,” she said.

“That’s just not the case.”

Education in Action Multiplication Fairy Tales

Students in Mrs. Eickman’s 4th Grade math class showed exceptional knowledge of multiplying a two digit number by a one digit number. As an enrichment project, students created multiplication fairy tales. Each project followed the plot of a well-known childrens fairy tale. Students had to use their knowledge of multiplication to intermix their own multiplication problems while still following the story line.

Students worked hard creating their books and showed higher level thinking as they combined their mathematical reasoning, reading and writing skills.

At Kaneland Blackberry Creek Elementary School in Elburn, Illinois, students in 3rd grade had been learning about the Japanese culture. Recently Mr. Barth, one of our 3rd grade teachers and Mrs. Hennigan, our English Language Learners teacher visited Chicago Futabakai Japanese School in Arlington Heights. The school sent 10 Japanese teachers to observe, discuss student learning, curriculum and cultural differences. They applauded the Kaneland’s policies regarding students, student learning, teachers, and curriculum and were amazed at the learning going on at Kaneland. We are excited to join the learning and sharing of our cultures with these educators.
