Reclusive winter wren pays a visit I don’t know about you, but I’ve never really thought of the Tri-Cities, or even the greater Chicago region, as a hotbed for cave dwellers. But what do I know?

Turns out I’ve actually seen three this year, so far.

Each time, the encounters were brief, so much so that I questioned whether I’d actually seen anything at all. But after this week’s sighting, I decided to do a little investigating. Sure enough, the cave dwellers are here, in the form of Troglodytes hiemalis, the winter wren.

Named for its habit of creeping in and out of small holes and crevices, like a teensy troglodyte, or cave dweller, this tiny bird visits our area during spring and fall migration. But unlike some seasonal visitors that arrive en masse, or announce their presence with loud flutters, flaps or calls, the secretive winter wren shows itself only briefly, leaving witnesses wondering whether they’ve really seen anything at all.

My first winter wren encounter this year was in early April, near the lovely ephemeral pond at Harley Woods in Campton Township. It was one of those warm spring days that makes you start to believe that winter is really, truly done. The

Woodland wildflowers were everywhere and, to make the afternoon even more perfect, I hadn’t found a single tick.

Enthralled by the signs of the season, I’d sat down on a fallen tree to ponder my next move listen – for spring peepers? Search for salamander eggs? – when I happened to notice something dark dart off to my left. I looked in that direction and saw ... nothing.

I was about to turn my attention back to the pond when it happened again. A brief scuttling, a glimpse of a small, dark form, and then, again, nothing at all.

The effect was similar to what we used to see in cartoons, where a character (Wile E. Coyote comes to mind) would hide himself behind a bush, pick it up, scurry, halt, and repeat, each time getting closer to his (Roadrunner) quarry. Only in this case, that the small, dark creature was coming closer was mere coincidence. I was not the intended quarry, but instead a lucky

spectator to a winter wren’s energetic foraging.

I shifted on my log perch and quietly pulled my camera from its case. The next time I saw movement, I pointed and clicked and captured a photo of the woodland floor. No wren.

A minute or so later, the little bird popped up again, and I clicked off another shot – of the woods from a slightly different angle.

The wren, aware of my presence but apparently not put off by it, continued foraging, though now in a slightly different direction. Every couple of minutes, when it would show itself for a nanosecond or two, it would be just that much farther away.

After about 20 minutes, I gave up. Disappointed, but not altogether unhappy – it was, after all, a glorious day to be out – I slid off the log and made my way over to and into the pond. (Did I mention I was wearing knee boots?)

Only later on, when I was back home and able to view the day’s digital images on my laptop screen, did I see that the wren and I did get our timing right. Once. The bird, only slightly blurry, was perched on a log, smack in the middle of the second-from-last picture. A glorious day, indeed.

Since then, I’ve seen winter wrens on two other occasions – last Saturday, and this past Tuesday. It would be too presumptuous to say it was the same bird, but both sightings were in the same area – the dense vegetation along the south border of the Hickory Knolls parking lot.

If you’d like to spot a winter wren of your own, your best bet is to go off in search of something else first. Some fall color perhaps, or maybe the woodland fungi that are so beautiful this year. Pay special attention to areas that have lots of leaf litter as well as hiding places – exposed roots, hollow logs and the like – with dark, miniature cave-like openings.

But beware. Troglodytes hiemalis will appear very quickly. And like any good recluse, it will disappear just as fast.

I may not know much about cave dwellers in general, but this little troglodyte, I know.

And now maybe you will, too.

CRUNCHED FOR TIME Schools balance core subjects with other classes, necessities

hen St. Charles School District 303 announced that the middle school day would be structured differently this school year, students, parents and educators complained.

Students, they told the school board, would get less time for language arts and no longer would have a study hall period – a time for the kids to regroup, complete homework and get extra help from teachers.

Critics questioned the logic of taking such support away from students at a time when the state is adopting new academic standards that expect more from students.

Wredling Middle School Principal Steve Morrill doesn’t deny the middle school schedule is challenging.

“The schedule today for a middle school student is more rigorous than it was just a few years ago,” he said. “Our kids are tired when they get home.”

But, he said, time is a “premium” component, and under the old schedule, teachers spent part of their day supervising students instead of delivering instruction.

At minimum, educators have five hours – 300 minutes – to teach students in grades two through 12 and four hours, or 240 minutes, for those in kindergarten and first grade, according to the state’s definition of a full day of student attendance.

How schools spend those minutes vary.

The Illinois State Board of Education collects data on how many minutes per day school districts devote to the core subjects – math, science, English and social science – at third, sixth and eighth grades.

Statewide data spanning 15 years show the minutes spent on the core subjects at the grade levels have increased by up to seven minutes or decreased by as much as five

minutes from 1998 to 2012.

In addition to providing instruction in the core subjects, school officials said Illinois schools must meet physical education requirements and carve out time for other subjects – art and music, for example – as well as make time for other necessities, such as lunch.

“Time is always the biggest factor in schools,” said Brad Newkirk, chief academic officer for Batavia Public School District 101.

To maximize that finite resource, he said, teachers can do cross-curriculum work.

For example, he said, if more science instruction is needed, teachers could use scientific content while teaching read-

ing skills.

According to 2012 data, Batavia third-graders receive about an hour of instruction in math, 27 minutes in science and social science, 167 minutes in English/language arts.

Other local school districts also spend more time on English than on other subjects.

Third-graders in Geneva School District 304 and Kaneland School District 302 get about 160 minutes of instruction a day, and St. Charles School District 303 third-graders get about 154 minutes, according to 2012 data.

Emphasis on English – especially at the elementary level – is common because literacy is a foundation skill, educators said.

“We spend a lot of time making sure students are learning to read, so they can read to learn in those core subjects,” Newkirk said.

District 303 was criticized this year when adjustments to the middle school schedule resulted in the end of a 90-minute literacy block. The language arts class now is 52 minutes, as are the other classes at the St. Charles middle schools.

Morrill said changes in teaching methods, as well as opportunities for middle schoolers to learn French or Spanish, support the elimination of the literacy block.

“Today, all content-area teachers are responsible for it in their discipline,” Morrill

“We are able to provide – during the day – timely interventions to kids who have gaps in their skill base,” Morrill said.

D-303 to begin dismissal process for teacher

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 soon will begin the process to dismiss the middle school teacher charged in DeKalb County with possessing and distributing child pornography, Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

Jerome McCauley, 45, was charged Monday after police searched his home in the 300 block of Grant Street in Sycamore.

Court records show he acknowledged having between 1,000 and 1,500 images and five to 10 videos of child pornography, some showing

12-year-old girls.

He is a 19-year employee with District 303, teaching seventh-graders and coaching volleyball at Wredling Middle School.

Parents waiting outside the school Friday afternoon had mixed reactions about Jerome McCauley his arrest.

Some withheld judgment, saying it’s a matter for law enforcement.

Others said his arrest came as a shock, because he was well liked by students and always acted professionally.

No parents would provide their names.

McCauley was placed on administrative leave with pay when District 303 learned of his arrest, Schlomann said.

He said the teacher was placed on leave without pay once he was charged.

A retired teacher is handling McCauley’s classes, Schlomann said, noting there are plans to post the position.

The coaching responsibilities likely will be assigned in the spring, he said.

“The state’s attorney in DeKalb has been very helpful,” Schlomann said. “We now have a copy of the police report, which tells us the de-

Police began the investigation in August, when a Sycamore detective assigned to Internet crimes found an IP address associated with someone who might have possessed child pornography, police said.

After a series of subpoenas and search warrants, police recently connected McCauley to the child pornography, police said.

McCauley reportedly collected the material in a file-sharing program that allowed other users to download it.

McCauley’s bond was set at $1 million Tuesday.

He would have to post

$100,000 bail in order to be released from the DeKalb County Jail.

Schlomann said he expects the school board will begin the 90-day process for dismissal at its regular meeting this month.

“The only alternative with that is if there is a resignation,” he said.

If convicted of the most serious charge he faces, McCauley would be sentenced to six to 30 years in prison.

Schlomann said if McCauley is convicted, the district would go through the process with the state to remove his teaching license.

McCauley is next due in court Nov. 13.

MARGARET STOVER Died: Nov. 1, 2013 LILY LAKE – Margaret Stover, 89, of Lily Lake, passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, after struggling for several months with the aftermath of a stroke.

The daughter of Otto F. and Martha (“Magda” Knutzen) Rothlisberger, she was born in Plato Center, where she attended the local grade school and graduated from Plato Center High School in 1941.

In September 1943, she married Lt. Glenn Stover, also a Plato Center graduate, who was at that time in the Army Air Corps. Following World War II, they made their home in Lily Lake in 1946. They were married 36 years when Glenn died of a sudden heart attack in 1980.

Margaret’s life was about her

family, whom she nourished and held dear to her, enjoying most the role of doting grandmother. A homemaker all of her life, she was a friend to many and cherished their friendship. She was the organist at several funeral homes in the Fox Valley; and when her children were all in school, she worked part time for several years as a van driver for Central CUSD 301 special education students.

Her passion was music and she shared her gift as a musician with many, including the Congregational Church of Lily Lake, where she was an active member and played the organ for church services for nearly 70 years. Before her marriage, she was an organist for several years at the Lily Lake (Country) Covenant Church, where she was also confirmed and married. Until her 89th year, she visited Pine View Care Center each month to play for residents and provided music for the local and regional American Legion Auxiliary, of which she was a member all of her adult life.

Throughout her lifetime, Margaret played organ for weddings and funerals, played piano to accompany dozens of students for their performances at school music competitions and played accordion for dances in the 1940s. In the early 1950s, she organized a “local band” of high school musicians from Lily Lake.

She is survived by her daughter and three sons, Kathleen, Ralph (Maureen), Lloyd (Gail) and Wayne Stover; nine grandchildren,

Jan (Jeff), Tod (Lea), Colleen (Jean-Francois), Brian (Jennifer), Rob (Katie), Katie, Scott, Erin and Drew; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Vivian Rothlisberger; two nieces; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; brothers, Herman and Harry Rothlisberger; sister-in-law, LaVelle Rothlisberger; and nephew, Melvin Rothlisberger.

The visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the funeral home. BATAVIA – No one has come forward to claim a $100,000 winning Lotto ticket that was sold at the 7-Eleven store at 710 E. Fabyan Parkway in Batavia.

The person who purchased the winning ticket in Thursday’s Lucky Day Lotto matched all five numbers on the ticket – 07-09-10-12-39.

A second winning ticket was sold at a Shell gas station in Romeoville.

Those who matched four of the five numbers will receive $100.

The winner still has plenty of time to claim the winning ticket.

“The person has a year to claim it,” Illinois Lottery spokesperson Chanele Newton said.

The winner had purchased the ticket on St. Patrick’s Day. “We might have a lucky store, I think,” 7-Eleven sales associate Vigay Patel said.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR One’s definition of leadership To the Editor: Hmm … time to swap representatives, eh? (Response to letter published Oct. 25 in the Kane County Chronicle.) Let’s look at that idea.

One votes no and one votes yes on ending the shutdown. The one who votes yes then “ … called on the president and Democratic members of Congress to work with his party to develop a sensible budget and improve the president’s health care law.”

Question: After the shutdown ended, what did “the president and Democratic members of Congress” do to work with anyone to develop a sensible budget? And regarding “the president’s health care law,” well, it’s looking more and more as though the billion-plus in tax dollars that has been allocated for it was totally wasted, as experts in the computer field are saying that it is so badly written/broken as to be unfixable. (Rep. Bill Johnson of Ohio comes to mind here.)

So, what with ACA being the flagship of President Obama, three years of work in the making and over a billion spent – it’s a total bust. Could be that the bills were already paid, but if the funding for the ACA was indeed voted down, might it have been possible that

we wouldn’t have had to waste that billion-plus on what has turned out to be garbage? Maybe we could have at least demanded a refund.

So, we’re at that point where we pick one or the other of two representatives. One voted yes on funding the government and – by default – paying that billion-plus for nothing. He ignores the stonewalling of the opposition all through this mess and believes he can now negotiate with them. Like the opposition, he also “owns” Obamacare.

The other voted no. No money to fund the government, which included Obamacare, which, I believe, should include not paying for the wasted time and effort spent on this unworkable/unfixable software. No money for the government because the opposition continually demanded all or nothing, in spite of offers to negotiate, and here we are, running out of money, yet spending a billion-plus headed for the bit-bucket.

I guess it all depends on one’s definition of leadership. I, for one, recognize it in Hultgren. I wish I could say the same for those who capitulated to the real extremists.

The need for true consensus A County Board chairman who says he must diligently scrutinize budget requests in order to keep the property tax levy frozen.

A county coroner who has requested a budget amendment for 2013 because of – what he says mainly is – an increase in the number of needed autopsies compared to what was originally anticipated, as well as staff funding changes.

Both officeholders are relatively new in their positions.

The first campaigned last year with the goal of freezing the property tax levy.

The second campaigned on a promise to professionalize the coroner’s office, which had seen distress after the former coroner – now deceased – was charged with official misconduct.

Despite ongoing talks at a variety of levels and efforts

by both men to come to a consensus on the coroner’s supplemental budget request, no solution has been agreed upon. Each disputes some of the aspects that have led to this point, and each wants to hold true to what he conveyed to constituents during the election.

We side with Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen in challenging requested budget increases.

Any public official tasked with budget oversight should question the need for additional dollars and examine whether alternative measures are possible.

But Coroner Rob Russell also has a job to do – and, in some cases, he is mandated by statute to make sure his office oversees that specific tasks are performed, such as the autopsying of bodies

when certain types of death occur.

In addition, the coroner must make the determination in many instances as to whether an autopsy is performed. And Russell says there were heroin-related deaths in Kane County before he took office in which autopsies were not performed when they should have been.

So, what is the dollar amount the two officials are disputing? It’s just under $88,000.

Add that figure to the original 2013 budget total for Russell’s office and it equates to about $845,000, which is more or less about 250 of the overall county budget for this year.

Project a slightly higher figure for 2014 – which Russell has requested – and is that enough to undue the fro-

zen property tax levy? We’re not so sure it is.

And Russell doesn’t think so, stating that the argument “doesn’t hold water.”

But has Russell explored every last nook and cranny of his 2013 budget to make sure he needs all of the $88,000 he has requested in supplemental funds? Is he at a point where he can do no more to satisfy the demands of Lauzen? Maybe. Maybe not.

It’s difficult to discern, as it appears communication has melted down between the chairman and the coroner, although Lauzen says, “There has been an enormous effort to communicate with Rob.” A disconnect exists here.

And looming in the shadowy background is the memory of a similar dispute – that between former Kane County Circuit Clerk Deborah Seyller

and the county. In that case, Seyller filed suit against the board, board members and the county, asking a judge to force the board to provide certain funding she requested.

The end result? A settled lawsuit that cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A situation like the one described above needs to be avoided at all costs.

It’s time for the chairman and coroner to sit down with open minds – and with or without whatever third parties they deem appropriate – to settle the supplemental budget issue and reach a true consensus.

Regardless of what already has occurred at this point, we call on Lauzen as the top leader of county government to extend such an invitation to Russell as soon as possible.

What’s playing at the movies?

I was in the mood to possibly attend a movie this weekend, so I turned to my Chronicle to see what was playing in Batavia. There’s no schedule, no listing. How come?

The price is too high What official in the Tri-Cities area agreed to this high-paying electric with the Prairie State power plant? So we’re going to have to pay higher electric bills?

Who voted for this? The people didn’t. Let the person who voted for this pay the difference.

Let them play My sincere congratulations to Batavia High School football for its recent 62-14 victory over Elgin. Congratulations also go to Elgin for its valiant efforts.

That lopsided victory brought back bad memories of my son being on the football team at Batavia years ago and never getting to play.

He was a good athlete, but perhaps not quite good enough or big enough.

He played with a great attitude and heart, but apparently that wasn’t important to the coaching staff, which elected never to cut a player.

Rather, they kept everyone and let them ride the bench all season, no matter the score.

There was no B-team or JV schedule either.

What a shame. I sincerely hope that the Batavia coaching staff has more class now and allows most, if not every, player the opportunity to see some game time, especially in mismatched games.

So much for promises The president didn’t know about Fast and Furious, foreign spying, the Affordable Care Act website.

Either he is totally ignorant and not competent enough to be the leader of our nation. So much for his promise of transparency.

Ask the children Up and down the Fox River, from Aurora to Elgin and beyond, cities are working hard and spending public funds to beautify their riverfronts and turn them into park-like settings for the enjoyment of their residents.

But not in Geneva. Public officials are only looking to convert available vacant land into restaurants and enterprise zones for the benefit of a few well-connected developers.

Geneva’s riverfront TIF zone was largely a failure in generating promised taxes.

Now these politicians, who weren’t around then, want to take us down the same road without considering what our neighboring cities along the Fox are doing for the benefit of all their residents and future generations.

Island Park is a good place to start, but it’s not the end of riverfront parks in Geneva.

Why not ask our kids what they would prefer?

Would they want another park on the river or another high-rise complex or restaurant?

Oktoberfest fun I am glad someone found Schnitzel Platz Oktoberfest. The two of us enjoyed sauerbraten there Oct. 25. Oct. 26 was the last day.

It was a happy time for another group of diners in the restaurant.

It was very good.

Activist upset over car sale to official

Kent Mutchler Geneva District 304 superintendent meeting, McQuillan recited the financial benefits in Mutchler’s contract extension and questioned why the district should do this when the superintendent makes more than $200,000 and received a $9,000 performance bonus.

“I don’t think the school district should be in the car loan business,” McQuillan said. “I find the interest-free car loan a slap in the face to all staff and Geneva district taxpayers.”

Donna Oberg, the district’s assistant superintendent for business services, said she recommended the sale to the superintendent and did not think anything of the payment plan.

“If I charged 2 percent interest, it would have been $80 over the life of the loan,”

Oberg said. “It was not like we were selling him a $30,000 vehicle. It was a way to ... provide him a car and not lose money on a vehicle. I recommended ‘X’ amount per month and the board approved it. ...

It didn’t cross my mind to add interest to it. We sold him an old vehicle.”

Mutchler said selling him the car is cost-neutral as well as an “extension of his office.”

“Having a car is important to me in a district that has nine buildings,” Mutchler said. “To get around to those buildings frequently, in addition to the out of town stuff a superintendent has to go to, there are things on weekends. It’s an extension of my office.”

Board president Mark Grosso said McQuillan is wrong.

“The district is not in the ‘car loan’ business,’ ” Grosso said. “The board looked at it.

The attorney wrote the agreement. It was part of his contract. It gave him an opportunity to purchase the car.”

The district leased the car for Mutchler as part of his package when he came to the district in 2006 and bought out the lease in 2011, records show.

Brian Costin, director of government reform for the Illinois Policy Institute, a conservative think tank, said Mutchler should have just bought the car outright from the district.

“I don’t think the district should be selling vehicles to employees and giving them special loans,” Costin said. “It should have been made available to the public and sold to whoever would pay the most for it.”

GENEVA – When Geneva District 304 officials negotiated a new contract with its superintendent this year, it included a provision that if he purchased the vehicle the district bought for him to use, he would get an $800 a month travel stipend.

The deal would save the district money in the long run, board president Mark Grosso said, because the district no longer would have to be responsible for its liability, upkeep and repairs.

Superintendent Kent Mutchler agreed, and the board approved the sale of a 2006 Ford Freestar with 125,000 miles at a Kelley Blue Book Trade-In value of $4,300.

The board also approved allowing Mutchler to pay the district in equal installments over 24 months, ending with the August 2015 payment.

But Bob McQuillan, a cofounder of Geneva TAXFacts, a local taxpayer watchdog group, objected, calling Mutchler’s car purchase “an interest-free loan.”

Library under review for open meetings violation

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Public Library board has been going into closed session to review invoices for legal services, a violation of the Open Meetings Act, according to legal experts.

Board attorney Roger Ritzman would not comment, but board president Esther Steel said if the board is wrong to do that, the practice will stop.

“If what we have been doing is wrong, we will correct it,” Steel said. “We do not deliberately ever knowingly vi-

olate the Open Meetings Act. We are so careful about that.

If we are truly in violation, it will never happen again.”

The Kane County Chronicle filed a request for review and enforcement with the Illinois Attorney General Public Access Counselor.

The library’s agenda for its Oct. 24 meeting lists a closed session for purchase or lease of real property for the use of the public body and “pending litigation/review of invoice for legal services.”

Village Board OKs building proposal

By ERIC SCHELKOPF NORTH AURORA – A new industrial development will be coming to the village.

North Aurora village trustees recently approved plans for a 604,565-squarefoot industrial building to be built on 32 acres along Orchard Gateway Boulevard, west of Randall Road.

The building would be located near a shopping center.

“That’s a real plus for us,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said. “We have to compete with Aurora and Batavia for that type of business.”

Opus Development Company LLC is a subsidiary of The Opus Group, a family of commercial real estate companies headquartered in Minneapolis.

Plans are for the building to be completed in summer 2014.

Opus has agreed to provide a berm along Orchard Gateway to further screen the truck parking from the view from the street as requested by North Aurora plan commissioners.

Assistant Attorney General Rob Olmstead of the Public Access Bureau said an invoice for legal services can be a “gray area,” cautioning that his comments are a first impression and subject to further review.

“At first glance, I would tend to agree there is no specific exemption for that,” Olmstead said.

But Olmstead said if the review of a legal bill actually was a discussion of legal strategy, then it would be included in the pending litigation exception.

“Things that are going

to affect litigation are fair game,” Olmstead said. “But if it’s just complaining the lawyer charged too much, I don’t think that would be fair game.”

According to 21 months of minutes from January 2012 to September 2013, the library board went into closed session for pending litigation and review of an invoice for legal services.

Minutes show lawyers’ invoices were paid after trustees returned to open session in the same meeting, but sometimes the bills were paid at a following meeting.

The exemption cited on the agenda for review of invoices for legal services does not appear in the law and is not allowed, said Esther Seitz, an attorney who represents Illinois media on open meetings and public records issues.

“There is no exemption that allows a public body to have a closed session to approve bills by an attorney or anybody else,” Seitz said.

“That’s a real plus for us. We have to compete with Aurora and Batavia for that type of business.”

Plan commissioners had rejected the site plan. The North Aurora Plan Commission is a recommending body to the Village Board.

“Although the plan commission was generally supportive of the site plan, they were not comfortable approving the site plan until architectural renderings are provided by the petitioner [Opus] for their review,” said planning consultant Pete Iosue of Teska Associates Inc. in a memo to village officials.

Playoff win slips away from Vikings Turnovers come back to hurt Geneva

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva football team expected St. Patrick to be a formidable playoff opponent, and the Shamrocks certainly were.

But the Vikings’ 31-23, season-ending loss in the first round of the IHSA Class 7A playoffs Friday at Burgess Field also had plenty to do with Geneva’s self-inflicted woes, which made the defeat harder to stomach.

“If you play against two teams, it’s not going to come out good,” Geneva senior defensive lineman Billy Douds said.

The Vikings committed four turnovers, including a fumbled snap late in the third quarter that created a huge momentum shift.

With the score tied at 17, Geneva’s defense had just forced a rare Shamrocks punt to give the Vikings possession. But Geneva quarterback Daniel Santacaterina couldn’t corral a poor snap, and St. Pat’s defensive end Quentin Voce returned the fumble 27 yards for a touchdown. The extra point made it 24-17 Shamrocks with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said bad snaps hadn’t been much of a bugaboo for the Vikings before Friday.

“The funny thing was, the rain was gone. It wasn’t raining anymore,” Wicinski said of the critical fumble. “A touchdown like that … but [the Vikings] kept fighting. They took a deep breath, they kept fighting, they didn’t roll over.

We had the ball in our hands with [a chance to win]. We just didn’t finish.”

The Vikings (7-3) regrouped swiftly, as Santacaterina connected with Pace Temple for a 49-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to come within 24-23. The PAT failed, which altered the Vi-

After Temple’s TD reception, the Vikings got the ball back when senior Ryan Navigato recovered a St. Pat fumble at the Geneva 16 with 8:20 to go. The Vikings moved into St. Pat territory but the drive stalled at the Shamrocks’ 32 with 5:37 to play.

The Shamrocks then did what they do best offensively – move the chains and chew clock – and steadily drove deep

into Geneva territory as the Vikings burned their timeouts. Wicinski then opted to allow Shamrocks running back Jeremy Molina to score on a 15-yard touchdown run with 2:35 to play rather than let St. Pat continue draining clock.

“We let them score. It might have looked like the same play we had all season, but no,” Wicinski joked. “We tossed the coin. I had to score anyways.”

Geneva took over at its own 31 with 2:29 to go and no timeouts, needing a touchdown and two-point conversion to tie. A Santacaterina rush eventually brought the Vikings to the Shamrocks’ 29-yard line with 1:10 to go, but the junior quarterback threw a game-sealing interception on the next play due to what Wicinski said was a miscommunication on the route.

Santacaterina went 11 for 21 for 206 passing yards with a pair of touchdown passes to Temple and another to senior Kyle Brown. He also threw two interceptions and rushed for 81 yards.

The game was tied at 14 at halftime before the teams traded field goals, making it 17-all until the key Vikings turnover at the end of the third quarter.

Geneva senior running back T.J. Miller rushed for 131 yards on 20 carries, and cred-

ited the Vikings’ relatively small senior class for returning the team to the playoffs after missing the postseason last year.

“Sixteen seniors, going 7-2 [in the regular season], that’s unheard of,” Miller said. “The juniors stepped up. I couldn’t be prouder.”

St. Pat (7-3) advances to host Schaumburg in Round 2 of the playoffs next week.

Geneva had won six straight games after falling to Batavia in Week 3.

“It’s a tribute to those guys and what they decided to do [after] last year,” Wicinski said. “They weren’t going to have it. This group will be remembered, maybe as a group that got us back going again.

So now the climb begins back up the mountain.

“It was sure easier to go down, I’ll tell you that. It’s a lot harder to get back up.”

BATAVIA – Even after a defensive hiccup on the second play of the game, the Batavia football team wasn’t going to let DeKalb have any hopes of an upset.

The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on their first six possessions Friday and shut out DeKalb for the rest of the game as No. 2 Batavia defeated No. 15 DeKalb, 48-6, in the first round of the IHSA Class 6A playoffs at home.

Batavia will visit No. 10 Rolling Meadows in the second round.

“This was our goal the whole season,” Anthony Batavia seScaccia nior running back Anthony Scaccia said.

“We’ve been waiting for this week throughout the whole season. We’re happy about it, we’ll celebrate [Friday night] and then get to working [Saturday].”

DeKalb took only two plays to take a quick 6-0 lead as junior running back Dre Brown took an inside handoff 69 yards for a touchdown.

Scaccia set the Bulldogs up at the DeKalb 20-yard line with a nice kickoff return and Kevin Green punched it in from nine yards out.

Batavia (9-1) scored on its next two possessions, continuously going back to Scaccia and Green. Scaccia (12 attempts, 146 yards) punched it in from six yards out and Green scored his second touchdown of the night on a 12-yard run early in the second quarter.

Cadets shock Bison with passing strikes

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Everyone knows Marmion likes to run the football, as the Cadets attempted only two passes Friday night in a steady drizzle at Fichtel Field.

But those two passes surprised Fenton and went for long touchdowns to help Marmion jump out to a 27-0 first-quarter lead. The Cadets (8-2) went on to rout the Bison, 39-0, in an IHSA Class 6A first-round game.

“They really brought their free safety up a lot we saw on the film,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “So we prepared for that and we were able to take advantage of it.”

Marmion senior quarterback Brock Krueger hit Enzo Olabi running wide open down the middle of the field on the first pass, which went for 85 yards. A short time later, Krueger made a play-action fake and fired a strike to another open receiver, as Josh Meyers hauled in the pass for a 72-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 21-0.

“It was pretty slippery out,” Meyers said. “The play before, it worked with Enzo, and that play, we’ve been doing it in practice a lot, and the [defender] just fell behind me and I beat him.”

Although the passes went to two different receivers, the play was the same.

“It’s a play action,” Krueger noted. “We fake the sweep, I drop back about a three-step drop, and we have a guy streaking down the right side. Their safeties were playing at about six yards [deep], so we got behind the safeties and we were all good from there.”

The Cadets set up the passes by running the sweep on their first play from scrimmage. Mike Montalbano took the handoff, found a seam, broke an arm tackle, cut back across the grain and sprinted 80 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.

“It’s nice when you score on the first play to set up that [pass] play because it’s the

Up next: Marmion at Prairie Ridge, date/time to be announced same action in the backfield,” Thorpe said. “So with Montalbano taking it right away, that was wonderful.”

Fenton defensive back Alex Cowan said the passes caught the Bison (6-4) by surprise.

“We didn’t see them pass very much [on film],” Cowan said. “It’s pretty much a powerhouse run team. They threw some good passes and beat us.”

Cowan was the main focus of the Fenton offense, which came as no surprise to the Cadets.

“That was our main thing in practice,” Meyers said.

“One of the sophomores, who is really agile and small, he was like [Cowan] for the week. That helped us a lot.”

Cowan carried the ball 22 times for 78 yards. He also was the target of quarterback William Wassmann on nine pass attempts and had four receptions for 37 yards. One of the times Cowan was targeted worked in Marmion’s advantage late in the first quarter when Meyers intercepted the ball and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown.

“Sadly, the kid in front of me fell down on the other team,” Meyers said. “I think it was [Cowan]. I just jumped the route and ran it in.”

That gave the Cadets a 27-0 lead, and Marmion was content to grind away yardage with big sophomore fullback Lucas Warren, who rushed 14 times for 74 yards. He carried the ball 10 times in the second quarter, setting up a 5-yard TD run by Sam Breen.

Junior Sean Campbell broke loose for a 67-yard scoring run in the third quarter to cap the scoring.

Next up for Marmion is a trip next weekend to Prairie Ridge (6-4), which used a late goal-line stand to hold off Lakes (8-2) on Friday, 21-14.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD sports@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland’s defense held the Hampshire football team scoreless for the first time this season, blanking the Whip-Purs, 35-0, Friday in the opening round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs.

The Knights held Hampshire (6-4) to less than 100 yards of total offense, three first downs and intercepted two Nick Mohlman passes.

The downside for the Knights was an injury to Brandon Bishop in the third quarter.

The senior did not get up after colliding with a Hampshire defender while recovering a punt. He was taken to a local hospital by paramedics.

“They owned the line of scrimmage,” Hampshire coach Dan Cavanaugh said.

“They held (Nick) Kielbasa down (the team’s leading rusher), they held our receivers down. They dared us to

Kaneland (9-1) scored its first touchdown near the end of the first quarter. A 4-yard run by Isaac Swithers with 2:56 left in the quarter capped an 81-yard, six-play drive.

Swithers also scored the team’s second touchdown four minutes into the second quarter on a 1-yard run.

The Knights increased their lead to 21-0 on a 6-yard pass from Drew David to Connor Fedderly with 1:57 left in the half.

Hampshire had a hard time getting its offense going in the first half.

Kaneland limited the Whip-Purs to nine plays in

the first quarter.

It appeared Hampshire might get the first touchdown of the game when David’s first pass was intercepted at the Knights’ 15-yard line.

The Whip-Purs could not take advantage, as they turned the ball back to Kaneland on a fumble.

Hampshire, stymied by penalties in the second quarter, finally got a drive going after Kaneland’s third touchdown at the end of the half.

Mohlman connected on his first two completions of the night to get the Whip-Purs to the Knights’ 24-yard line, but Hampshire was not able to score before time expired.

The Knights added two more touchdowns in the third quarter on 4-yard run by Nate Dyer and 14-yard pass from David to Tyler Slamans.

The Knights will take on the winner of today’s contest between Joliet Catholic (8-1) and Chicago Urban Prep (6-3) next weekend.

CLASS 2A BURLINGTON CENTRAL BOYS SOCCER SECTIONAL FINAL: Tri-Cities volleyball IHSA WHEATON ACADEMY 6, BURLINGTON CENTRAL 2 Wheaton Academy rolls past BC drums up drama We’re smack-dab in the middle of a football playoff weekend, but Thursday night’s slate of girls volleyball regional championship matches shouldn’t fade into the background without one more, appreciative look back.

Wow, was that something.

This might seem like blasphemy to all the football-lovers out there, but Thursday might have been the single-most dramatic night of high school sports we’ll see all fall.

Of the seven area girls volleyball teams involved in regional championship matches Thursday, six of the seven went to a decisive Game 3.

Just among the Tri-Cities teams alone, the storylines and emotional swings were tremendous.

At the IHSA Class 4A Addison Trail Regional final, Batavia won Game 1 over archrival Geneva and led Game 2, 22-20, before a young-but-talented Vikings team showed great poise in rallying to win the second game and, eventually, the match.

St. Charles North won Game 1 of its South Elgin Regional final versus Wheaton North before astonishingly coughing up a 24-17 lead in Game 2. The Falcons continued their mega-surge by jumping to a 7-0 lead in the third game, but just when it looked like the North Stars were in complete meltdown mode, North steadied itself and took the rubber game, 26-24.

And St. Charles East wasn’t to be outdone in the goosebump competition, rallying from a 23-21 deficit in Game 3 against host York to win 25-23 and move on to sectionals.

Veteran Saints coach Jennie Kull said at the start of the season she doubted her team had the firepower to measure up with North and Geneva this season. But now owning a 31-6 record, a co-Upstate Eight Conference River championship with North and a regional title,

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab Kull’s contention that East is an underdog at the Geneva Sectional next week is up for debate.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this group of girls because of the fact that maybe we’re not the most powerful team but they came together as a unit and as a family,” Kull said.

“They’ve really believed they can be good.

“I think that’s what pushed them over [against York], too, is the fact they’re a really cohesive group that enjoys playing together.”

Tuesday’s sectional semifinals at Geneva should be a blast, with the host Vikings gunning for top-seeded Glenbard West and crosstown East and North comprising the nightcap of the high-powered doubleheader.

As promising of a slate as that is, no way can we expect Tuesday to match what transpired Thursday.

That was a once-in-aseason kind of night, and fortunately for most of our area teams, it ended with celebrations.

One more girls volleyball thought – St. Francis’ threegame win against Montini on Thursday netted legendary coach Peg Kopec’s program a 24th straight regional championship.

A school that sustains success like that – especially a private school – is often going to foster a degree of resentment, but even those who generally root against the Spartans have to respect what Kopec has built, and maintained.

If there’s any statistic to come out of Thursday more awe-inspiring than the matches themselves, St. Francis’ 24 straight regional crowns would be it.

Class 2A Burlington Central Sectional

jpowers@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – The Wheaton Academy boys soccer team defeated Burlington Central, 6-2, on Friday to claim the IHSA Class 2A Burlington Central Sectional championship.

The Warriors controlled most of the match, which became more physical as the game went on and field conditions worsened because of persistent rain. Junior Reid Culberson opened up the scoring with 32 minutes left in the first half on a scramble for the ball in front of the Burlington Central net. Ty Seager put the Warriors up, 2-0, on a breakaway goal about midway through the first half.

Wheaton Academy senior Casey Zimmerman scored two goals, one in the first half and another to lead the Warrior attack in the second half.

Zimmerman said the conditions were just something that the team had to deal with in stride.

“We knew when we got here that it was going to be a

tough pitch, a tough pitch to play on,” Zimmerman said.

“We realized that we can’t let the pitch dictate the pace of the game, and we went out and did that and played pretty well.”

Wheaton Academy advances to the Class 2A DeKalb Supersectional on Tuesday and will face either Peoria Notre Dame or Morton.

Both teams will face each other today for the Morton Sectional title.

Zimmerman credited junior Grant Rougas with setting up the offensive attack and allowing him to score two goals.

Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke praised the Warriors ability to finish and consistently put the ball in front of the net for their success.

“Obviously we felt like we were able to have a couple nice finishes by the way that the individual players struck the ball,” Brooke said. “The combination play got us pretty deep in to the box and allowed us in all honesty to get good looks at the corners of the goal.”

Sam Hardey and Michael Ruff also scored for Wheaton Academy.

Burlington Central senior Matthew O’Connor had both goals for Burlington Central.

O’Connor said that Wheaton Academy simply was able to execute better on both sides of the pitch.

“They just came out well, they came out attacking, they finished a lot of their opportunities,” O’Connor said. “We just didn’t get lucky on a lot of them.”

I’ve been playing lacrosse, I want to say for about 10 or so years now. I’ve been playing it since I was in pee-wee lacrosse, so it’s been about 10 or nine years.

What triggered your commitment (to Adams State) Wednesday?

I took an official visit out there with my dad and just really loved the campus. It’s a really upbeat program we felt was moving in a great direction. … It was either between them and a few other schools I considered, and I just really liked the coaching staff and the [campus out there] so I just decided to commit to Adams State.

What does Alamosa, Colo., have going for it?

The town is basically centered around the university. … It’s really cool, I saw sporting events when I was there,

Being so far from home, is that a concern at all for you?

I mean the other schools I was looking at are mostly East Coast. It’s kind of something you have to deal with.

a two-hour flight and about a 16-hour drive, so the distance is a factor but I can definitely deal with that because I’m going to be independent in college anyway.

Do people generally still look down on Midwest lacrosse or has it grown enough where there’s some respect out there?

I would say that Midwest lacrosse is a lot [more respected] than it used to be. One of the best teams in the nation is out in Indiana (Culver Academy) for high school. … I definitely see a lot of kids on my travel team from the Midwest committing to very talented teams on the East Coast. … I don’t see how it can go backward at this point. I feel like it’s just going to be full-throttle forward.

How has the transition from East to North agreed with you?

Middle School, we were the middle school that got split up [for high school], and we had a lot of athletes in our school. My mom said we were going to move and my parents gave me the choice, sat down and talked with me. … I’d always been very close with Andy Thompson (former St. Charles co-op lacrosse coach, now on staff at North), and I knew North was going to be a very quality program and be very good the next two years, next three years, and I had a bunch of friends at North, so I just decided to go over and make the transition. But I have a lot of friends at East, too. I have nothing against East.

Judson Huxtable became the latest member of his family to decide on a college sports program, choosing Division-II men’s lacrosse program Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo., on Wednesday. Like older siblings Jayde (volleyball) and Jordan (football), Huxtable is on track to graduate from St. Charles North, although Judson started his high school career at St. Charles East before transferring to North part way through his sophomore year, once his family relocated to Campton Hills.

Huxtable, a senior offensive midfielder, spoke with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab earlier this week for the Weekend Chitchat about his college decision, switching high schools and the state of lacrosse in the Midwest. The following is an edited transcript:

Marklund’s first 5K brings in $30,000 Wasco 14U softball team wins

More than 600 runners, walkers and adaptive athletes from around the area descended upon Geneva to take part in the inaugural “Run, Walk, and Roll for Marklund 5K/1 Mile” event. The larger-than-expected number of participants helped the nonprofit organization net $30,000. Participants were encouraged to help raise money for Marklund by setting up their own fundraising pages. The race took place on a USATF-certified course that wound throughout the Mill Creek neighborhood adjacent to Marklund’s Geneva campus. Several neighborhood residents stood in their driveways applauding and cheering for the runners as they passed.

The Wasco 14U Team 4 won first place last weekend in the Susan G. Komen “Pretty in Pink” tournament, which was sponsored by the Wasco Girls Fastpitch Softball League. Grace Sobieski threw for five perfect innings, stole a total of five bases, and closed the third inning with a double play. Kate Gill threw two innings, allowing only one hit.

Liv Doyle, Kate Weber, Hannah Springer, Adriana Conlee, Leah Thompson, Lexi Coakley all stole a combined total 20 bases to win the championship, 10-1.

Giving thanks I’m a huge fan of saying thank you to people who’ve made a difference in my life.

This one falls into the betterlate-than-never category, but Terry Kasper, former proprietor of the 10 South café at the Batavia Public Library, is one of those people.

It might surprise him to know that, but it’s true. A fixture at the café for seven and a half years until he sold the business to Steven Kilberg at the end of August, Terry was, quite literally, the first person in Batavia I had a real conversation with when I scoped out the town as a potential place to raise my family.

I scoped out nearly every town in Chicagoland. On this day in particular, as I did many days when I was in my “scoping” mood, I grabbed my notebook, dropped the kids off at school (we lived in Naperville at the time), and hit the road hoping to discover the place that felt like home.

My first stop was always the local library. If a town didn’t have a decent library with a good vibe, it didn’t make the cut.

On that day about seven years ago, I discovered that not

A café? A café! I recall remarking then how fortunate Batavia parents are, that they can come to this library with their little ones for story time, make friends and easily keep the conversation and connection going over coffee, juice (for the kids) and even lunch, if they’re up for it. Wow. What a dream that would have been for me as a new mom so many years ago, but I digress.

I was quite fortunate that Terry was at the helm of this library’s café when I stopped in on my first visit to town, because he made me feel welcome right away.

In fact, after a brief conversation that first day he even loaned me a little book about Batavia’s history. I remember how surprised I felt then, that

I guess he knew I’d be back.

First impressions are the most important, and I’m sure his warmth and quiet generosity had a little something to do with why I felt so drawn to this little town and why we eventually moved here a year or so later.

I told him, a time or two, how much I appreciated that, but I don’t know if he realized just how much my kids (10 and 7 when we moved here fiveand-a-half years ago) got a kick out of seeing him. His friendly wave never got old.

“Let’s go see Terry,” I’d say, when really, I mainly wanted to get their butts to the library.

“Can we get smoothies?”

Noah always asked, but Holly usually wanted to stay for lunch. She liked Terry’s roast beef sandwiches. She liked dipping them into the au jus he

served on the side.

So, yeah, I bribed them with visits to Terry’s cafe. Yes, yes I did.

My kids weren’t the only ones who enjoyed Terry and his food.

“He made a great fruit salad,” recalls Michele Martzell, library employee. “Everybody enjoyed it.”

Golf will figure prominently in the next chapter of Terry’s life, he says. Though he welcomes the change, the transition may be a little weird for him. “I’ve always had a couple of jobs all my life,” he admitted.

Before he sold his business to Kilberg (who renamed the café Chapters Coffee House and Café) I asked him what he enjoyed most about his time there.

“All of the different kinds of people that come in here,” he said. That doesn’t surprise me.

I’m betting he made them feel welcome, too.

We’ll miss you, Terry.

Fall clean up and spring planning LEARNING TO GROW Vicki Hagstotz Even as a young child, fall has always been my favorite time of year. I love the cool, crisp air, and it is a pleasure working outdoors.

As an adult and avid gardener, fall is still my favorite time of year, as I clean up the vegetable garden, perennial garden and the lawn – all the while planning for next year.

Here are a few outside tasks to complete in the next few weeks.

• Lawn – It is best to continue mowing your lawn until it is dormant. The last mowing should be at a height of 2 inches to prevent winter damage from snow mold or powdery mildew. Around Thanksgiving time is also an excellent time to apply a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer. Timing the application just before a late season rain or early snow is perfect.

The slow release of this fertilizer will get your lawn off to a lush start in the spring.

• Bulbs – Remember to lift tender bulbs and corns that are desired for next season. It is not too late to plant spring flowering bulbs. I still plan on planting Siberian Squill (Scilla siberica) which is one of my favorites. I love the little blue flower and the fact that they colonize over time.

A little effort this fall will pay off with a fresh new look in spring.

• Perennial beds – You can leave perennials stand tall all winter. Echinacea and Rudbeckia provide winter food for the birds.

University to stage ‘Trojan Women’ KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Aurora University students will stage six performances of the Greek tragedy “Trojan Women.”

Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, Saturday, Nov. 9, and Wednesday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 16, in the university’s Perry Theater, 349 S. Gladstone Ave., Aurora.

The director is Kelly Hilliard Roush of St. Charles, assistant professor of art and theater.

“When we began the Aurora University Theatre Program eight years ago, it was not without ambition,” said Roush in a news release.

“We wanted to go beyond the normal in theater programs.”

Written by Greek playwright Euripides, the Aurora University production of “Trojan Women” will be Gwendolyn MacEwan’s adaptation.

Euripides play, written more than 2,500 years ago, deals with the tragedies and futility of war when the Greeks have destroyed Troy, and the women of Troy await their fate.

“What you will see on our stage is the product of hundreds of hours of conceptual meetings, planning, rehearsing, building and sweating the details by a group of exceptional artists,” Roush said in the release.

Post-show discussions will be held Nov. 9, with the director and designers; and on Nov. 16, with the director and cast.

Cut down any perennials that are self-seeding so they don’t expand into unwanted areas. If there are vacancies in your perennial bed, make mental notes for new additions next year.

• Vegetable beds – If your soil needs a boost, till compost or leftover vegetable debris directly into the soil each fall.

Dispose of diseased debris.

Look for those straggler tomatoes and zucchinis that may have fallen to the ground to prevent too many volunteers next year. The enriched soil will be awaiting those seeds and seedlings next April.

• Tools – Be sure to remove all dirt from your tools with a wire brush. Check for any nec-

essary repairs – loose screws or broken handles. Next, sharpen hoes, spades, pruners, and loppers. Wooden handles can be wiped down with linseed oil so the handles don’t crack.

The final step is to spray all metal and cutting edges with a penetrating oil to prevent rust.

If you decide to do any dormant pruning or cutting back of grasses and hydrangeas on a nice day in February, you will

be all set.

This fall has seen a fair amount of moisture, but continue to monitor moisture levels until the ground has frozen.

This is particularly important if you have planted new trees, shrubs, grass seed, perennials, bulbs, etc. By putting the garden to bed properly in the fall, it will awaken next spring ready to greet the new season with vigor.

Matthew McConaughey talks about the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now For the past 20 years, Matthew McConaughey has been an actor, making his big-screen debut as the pothead David Wooderson in “Dazed and Confused.”

For most of those decades, he’s been a target of barbs from the critics. But in recent years, starting around the time of “Tropic Thunder,” in which he played clueless Hollywood agent Rick Peck, those same critics have turned hate into love.

McConaughey has been on a roll, in “Killer Joe,” “Magic Mike” and “Mud.” In the based-on-fact film “Dallas Buyers Club,” he plays Ron Woodroof, a Texas man and hard-loving heterosexual who was stunned to find out, in 1986, that he was HIV-positive.

The film traces his journey from frightened patient to groundbreaking pioneer of finding alternative treatments and medicines, and sharing that information with others. To play the part, McConaughey dropped his weight from his normal 182 down to 135. He spoke about the film and his career at the Toronto International Film festival.

Ed Symkus: What were your first thoughts when you read the script?

Matthew McConaughey: I remember writing down that thing’s got fangs.

Fangs! I thought it was an incredible character-driven story. There was this guy who had a seventh-grade education, was a two-bit cowboy, bull-riding electrician, ... womanizer, heterosexual, who gets HIV, has 30 days to live, and within seven years, becomes an absolute scientist of HIV and the other pathogens.

A guy with that education, from that background who goes on his own and does research and knows as much or more about the disease than a lot of the doctors did – I thought that was a great story.

ES: How difficult do you think it was to be a man with AIDS in Texas back then?

MM: A heterosexual with AIDS ... there weren’t many people believing that you were a heterosexual if you had it.

Shoot, that suspicion is still there today.

But at that time, when this disease had

I remember when Magic Johnson came out with it, there were players saying I’m not gonna play on the same court. They had a legitimate beef because nobody knew. People said you could get it from a handshake. You can get it from saliva. You can get it from swapping sweat. They said you could look that person in the eye and get it.

And nobody came out with a doctrine saying here’s what’s true and here’s what’s not true.

ES: You lost all of that weight under the care of nutritionists, but what were you eating when you got down to 135?

MM: More than you’d think. I was eating pretty damn healthy, just small amounts. I was eating 5 ounces of fish for lunch, with a cup of vegetables, 5 ounces of fish for dinner. And a wild thing happened. My body got the message that I wasn’t gonna feed it any more [food], and it felt like it was losing weight on its own.

Because once I got to the weight that I wanted to get to, I started eating more, to plateau out, and my body still wanted to keep losing weight.

ES: Is it true that you were on the road to

become a lawyer before you started acting?

MM: After I finished high school, I moved to Australia for a year because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I came back, went to University of Texas at Austin, and was headed towards law school.

It wasn’t till the end of my sophomore year that I started getting a little nervous about this idea of being a lawyer. At that time I was saying to myself that I wanted to go into the storytelling business. So, I went to film school, and studied behind the camera. I wasn’t thinking about being an actor, but when I look back now, even when I was directing, I would get over there and show the person what I wanted him to do. So, I was kind of performing, and I was enjoying it. But it wasn’t ’til that summer in ’92, between my junior and senior year, that I was in the right bar at the right time, and the casting director Don Phillips brought me to meet with [director] Richard Linklater for “Dazed and Confused.”

ES: You’ve never stopped working, yet in the past few years critics have been kinder to you. Are you doing anything differently?

MM: I’m going for more experiences.

I’ve wanted to pick some things out that scare me a little bit, things I’m not sure what I’m gonna do with it, but that I can’t get off my mind.

Bright-light sneezing has unknown cause Dear Doctor K: Often when I step outside from a dark room into the sunlight, I sneeze. Why does this happen?

Dear Reader: My colleague, Dr. Robert Shmerling, looked into this question once. I learned from him that there are many people like you, and even more who suddenly sneeze when they move suddenly from a warm environment to a cold one (or vice versa).

Why do we sneeze in the first place? It’s a complex reflex we all are born with, as it protects our lungs. It begins with nerve endings in the soft membranes that line the nose. When something irritating enters the nose with the air we breathe in and lands on the membranes, the nerve endings react. These triggers send messages to the throat, chest and abdomen to contract to forcefully rid the nasal passage of its contents. The sneeze forcibly ejects nasal air back out of the body (and away from the lungs).

It’s similar to vomiting when we’ve eaten something that the stomach really doesn’t like. The irritating substance that came down through the mouth gets ejected right back out through the mouth.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff If sneezing is supposed to protect the lungs, why would anyone sneeze when he or she steps into the sunlight? How does sunlight threaten the lungs? It doesn’t.

Something has gone wrong with the reflex: It is triggered for no good reason.

No one knows why some people sneeze at the sight of bright light. It’s possible that bright light triggers the other nerves involved in sneezing. Maybe the light flooding into the eye, or squinting in reaction to bright light, causes a crossed signal of sorts, making the body think a sneeze is in order.

Another unknown is why the muscles of the face, including the eyelid muscles, are also involved in sneezing. Scientists think the eyes might shut during a sneeze to keep out flying particles. (Though the idea that you cannot keep your eyes open during a sneeze is a myth. If you tried hard enough, you could probably do it.)

Humans actually expel more

material from our mouths when we sneeze than from our noses.

That’s why it’s important to cover both your mouth and nose when sneezing.

Dr. Shmerling tells me that he once saw an Internet video of a woman sneezing every time she walked from the shadowy spot of a room into the bright light near a window. Apparently she was using this sensitivity to light – called “photic” sneezing – to audition for an allergy medication commercial. She found a profitable use for her “talent.”

Photic sneezing is harmless and can actually be useful. Ever have that annoying “need-tosneeze” feeling, but the sneeze just won’t come? Look briefly at a light. Often that will encourage the sneeze.

If you really want to avoid sneezing next time you come out of a dark space, keep your sunglasses handy. One study found they could prevent the photic sneeze.

grade given to friend Dr. Wallace: I’m really upset, but I don’t know what I can do about it. I’m taking English composition, and I like the teacher a lot because she gives interesting and fun assignments.

At the beginning of the year she told us that we would have a 10-page, typed research paper due near the end of the semester, and this would count as 50 percent of our final grade. I’m getting an A in the class, and I received an A on my research paper, so I will be getting an A for the semester.

The problem is that my best friend is also taking this class, and she is getting a B+ in the class, but she got an A for her research paper, so this means she will also be getting an A in the class, and this really doesn’t seem fair to me.

I wanted to get an A and get on the honor roll, so I busted my tail to get an A. My best friend also gets an A because her mother did all the research at the local library while she was in school. She spent many hours gathering information for the paper her daughter was supposed to be doing.

I’m a very competitive person and I don’t like for a cheater to get the same grade as I get. I don’t mind a little encouragement and helping a bit, but my friend was bragging and laughing because her mother did most of the work. I really feel I should tell the teacher, but I’m not going to be a snitch.

I do feel a little better writing this letter to get it off my chest. Besides, if you print it, my friend and her mom will probably see it because they always read your column. Hopefully, they will read it and feel ashamed of themselves!

Whenever I babysit for his mother, he waits until we’re alone and then makes terrible passes at me. I made the mistake of asking him what he wanted for a graduation gift and he told me. It was sex with me.

Now I’m scared that one of these times I won’t be able to stop him. What should I do?

It is rare that an auction starting one of a major – two of a major ends in a slam. However, that South hand is very strong. When South rebid three clubs, North assumed this was a help-suit game-try and jumped to four hearts because he had a good club holding and a maximum – aces are wonderful.

South then carefully employed Blackwood before bidding the small slam.

It seems as though South must lose two trump tricks. But if South can reach an ending with the king-jack of hearts and a loser, while West still has his last three trumps, West can be trapped.

To achieve this ending, South must ruff three diamonds in his hand and find West with exactly 3-4-4-2 distribution.

At trick three, declarer plays a diamond to dummy’s ace. He continues with a diamond ruff in his hand, the club king, a club to dummy’s ace, another diamond ruff, the spade king, a spade ruff on the board, and, at trick 10, the third diamond ruff.

When that passes off quietly, South leads his last club. West must ruff and play away from his queen-10 of hearts into South’s king-jack. Beautiful!
