Park district adds two new pieces to ‘Sculpture in the Park’ collection

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com The St. Charles Park District has announced the installation of two new works of art as part of its permanent “Sculpture in the Park” collection.

“Portals” by Evanston sculptor Victor Nelson was acquired by the park district in conjunction with St. Charles Township.

And “Truth” by Jane Davidson of St. Charles has been donated by the artist.

There are now 10 sculptures included in the permanent collection on display at Mount St. Mary Park in St. Charles.

Fabricated with wood and plaster and finished in a vivid red powdered steel, the geometric shapes in “Portals” were inspired by the construction of the Grosse Point, Michigan, lighthouse, as a response to increased fog and industrial pollution obscuring Lake Michigan.

According to Nelson, a first-time contributor to the 2015 “Sculpture in the Park” exhibition, the sculpture’s “radiating shape and strong color are a suggestion of the bright light shining outward to guide the ships safely to the harbor entrance.”

Indeed, it was the vibrancy of “Portals” eye-catching color, size and overall dimensions that appealed to the park district’s “Sculpture in the Park” review committee, said Candy Boulay, administrative assistant. “We felt it would be a dynamic addition to our permanent collection.”

The park district was assisted in buying “Portals” through the generous contributions of St. Charles Township.

“For several years, the township has expressed interest in working with us to acquire sculptures that will become part of the ‘Sculpture in the Park’ permanent collection,” Boulay said. “We are very grateful for their

assistance in helping us build an exhibit that attracts hundreds of visitors annually.”

A retired professor from Northern Illinois University, Davidson’s award-winning work has appeared in galleries and shows in Michigan and Texas, as well as throughout Illinois. As a first-time participant in the 2014 “Sculpture in the Park” exhibition, Davidson was honored to have “Truth” included in her hometown park. The sculpture is crafted of stainless steel, stands about 8 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds.

Davidson said, it’s abstract shape depicts the multifaceted path often undertaken when searching for truth.

After inclusion in shows in Michigan, where Davidson has a second home, “Truth” made its way back to Davidson’s native St. Charles as a labor of love, spearheaded by Davidson’s longtime friend, artist Peggy Sue Seehafer.

Davidson currently is undergoing treatment for cancer,

and Seehafer knew it was one of Davidson’s lifelong wishes to have her sculpture become part of a permanent collection.

“I’ve been part of St. Charles’ public art community for many years,” said Seehafer, whose mural, “Classic Cars on Cedar,” is installed on the north and east walls of the First Street parking deck.

“So I said to Jane, ‘By hook or by crook, I will make that happen.’”

The St. Charles Park District Board approved the expense of moving “Truth” from Davidson’s home in Michigan and the cost of installation, as part of the permanent collection in Mount St. Mary Park.

“Jane is thrilled that this took place,” Seehafer said.

“It is a lovely piece. It honors her.”

Everyday Heroes recognized for making county better

And so, the Campton Township resident said, he was “accepting it on behalf of the 200 volunteers, as well.”

Dirks was one of 12 people the Kane County Chronicle recognized as Everyday Heroes during an awards breakfast at the Mill Creek Golf Club near Geneva.

‘Romeo and Juliet’ headed to Kaneland If you go

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School junior Mace Jendruczek said he was excited when he learned the school’s fall play would be “Romeo and Juliet.”

Jendruczek remembered reading the play as part of a freshman assignment and said he “absolutely loved it.”

He auditioned for the role of Mercutio, which he thought would be an accomplishment.

As the auditions went on, he found he started to read more as Romeo, and he soon realized he would play one of the most recognized characters in history.

“I honestly didn’t think I could get this role,” Jendruczek said. “I just underestimated myself. I didn’t think I was ready for that kind of role.”

Jendruczek said he is grateful director Christina Staker provided the opportunity. The show gets underway starting at 7 p.m. Friday in the high school auditorium at 47W326 Keslinger Road in Maple Park. An understudy performance is set for 2 p.m.

Saturday, and main cast performances follow at 7 p.m.

Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. School district staff and Kaneland High School students will be admitted free, but they must show their Kaneland ID when presenting their tickets for admission. Information can be found online at khs.kaneland.

Kaneland High School junior Sabrina Massa will portray Juliet. She said she has experience playing challenging characters, as she played the role of Fiona in an understudy performance of the musical “Shrek” at Kaneland. She said for “Shrek” she had to learn a different type of character, as well as music and dances.

For the role of Juliet, she

has had to learn to speak lines written by William Shakespeare. She said she was intimidated at first, but now is confident.

“It definitely took longer,” Massa said of learning her lines as Juliet. “I have so many monologues, and you really have to slow down when you are learning and comprehend what it says.”

Staker said it is important for students to experience

Shakespeare’s plays.

“I wanted to pick a story I knew the kids studied in school,” she said.

It is Jendruczek’s fourth show at the high school and sixth overall. He had a smaller part in “Shrek,” and he said this is the first time he will have a major speaking role. He said it’s a big deal to tell people you are playing Romeo, and he will have family coming in “from every-

where around the country to see this.”

“I was definitely thrilled that she chose me as Romeo, but it definitely was overwhelming at first,” he said.

“It’s a long show, and it’s a lot to take in.”

Massa and Jendruczek said they have been friends for a long time, so they have good chemistry. Jendruczek added, “I think these roles have been waiting for us.”

Leo Espinosa will play Friar Lawrence; Stephen Gannon will portray Mercutio; Nicole DiSandro will play the Nurse; Stevie Kumar will be Benvolio; Jarod Kovach will be Tybalt; Patrick Murphy will be Lord Capulet; Emma Conrad is Lady Capulet; Jack Coyle is Lord Montague; and Erica Johnson is Lady Montague.

The cast also includes Grayson Bilskey, Caitlyn Rawers, Jack Lasater, Evie Beck, Taylor Heiser, Abbey King, Lyndsay Mach, Taylor Heiser and Julia Janis.

Drivers face street racing charges in St. Charles

“Here’s another example of people exercising poor decision-making when it comes to driving,” Deputy Chief David Kintz said.

deck just before 1 a.m. Nov. 12 when he heard vehicles racing, Kintz said. He said the officer pulled up to take a look and saw a 2007 Buick Rainier and a 2008 Nissan Altima race

Although the officer was unable to read their speeds, he saw they were “accelerating fast and jockeying for position,” Kintz said.

The vehicles crossed the Fox River at Prairie Street, he said, and the officer pulled them over at Riverside Avenue.

The motorists – Steven D. Hanson and Jessica Mae Davis – knew each other and admitted to racing down the

roadway, Kintz said. Hanson was trying to get in front of Davis so she could follow him home, he said, but she also was trying to get in front of him.

Kintz described the situation as dangerous. They were not only racing in a business district, he said, but they also didn’t notice driving past a squad car.

“We have a very active downtown area with a lot of pedestrian activity. They’re not paying attention to who

might be crossing the road,” he said. “This pretty much has disaster written all over it.”

Davis, 26, of the 1400 block of Hill Road, Geneva, was charged with street racing and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Hanson, 25, of the 500 block of Yale Square, West Chicago, was charged with street racing, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Street racing is a Class A misdemeanor.

Geneva resident Irwin – whose volunteer efforts extend to such foreign countries as Lithuania, Poland and Belarus – addressed the crowd in Lithuanian.

Pearce, the assistant superintendent for human resources for Batavia School District 101, was featured for his involvement in youth sports. His family, coworkers and St. Charles Storm basketball colleagues joined him at the breakfast.

Mooseheart annual Holiday Lights show begins Nov. 27 editorial@kcchronicle.com MOOSEHEART – After a record-breaking run in 2014, Mooseheart’s Holiday Lights show returns for its sixth annual show after Thanksgiving.

The show will run from 5 to 9 p.m daily Nov. 27 through Dec. 31 at the Mooseheart campus directly north of Mooseheart Road on Route 31 between North Aurora and Batavia, according to a news release.

The cost to enter the show is $10 a car, with 3-D glasses available for an additional $3, the release stated.

Annette left too soon, but not before making her mark on the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will forever be missed.

She is survived by her two daughters, Robin (Kenneth) Johnston and Wendy (Matthew) Byars; three grandchildren, Kendall Johnston, Megan Danielson, and Morgan Byars; one niece, Cheryl (Scott) Rhine; two great-nieces, Jessica (Ben) Wills and Natalie Gee; extended family and a community of friends in both northern and southern Illinois.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Annie Earnhart; and one sister, Barbara (Kent) Jones.

There will be two funeral services for Annette. The first will be preceded by a time of visitation from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m., with a service to follow at 11:30 a.m., at Lord of Life Lutheran Church 40W605 Rt. 38 (corner of LaFox Rd. and Rt. 38) in Elburn. A second service will begin at 2:00 p.m., with a time of visitation from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m., at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home, 301 West Spring St., Anna, IL. Interment will follow at Ebenezer Hall Cemetery.

For six nights this year – Dec. 11 to 13 and Dec. 18 to 20 – the admission price includes not only the Holiday Lights

show, but also a chance to see Santa Claus at the Mooseheart Fieldhouse. Santa will sit for free photos starting at 5:30 p.m., and the line will close at 8:30 p.m., with those in line still allowed to see Santa, the release stated.

In addition to Santa Claus, the fieldhouse also will be a place where children can enjoy a bounce house, crafts, holiday music and Christmas cookies, according to the release.

“One of the highlights of the show is when we open the fieldhouse [for] Santa,” Urwiler stated. “It brings an-

other element to the show. I love to go into the fieldhouse and see the children having a good time, doing crafts, enjoying the bounce house or having cookies and hot chocolate.”

As with each previous year, there will be added displays and sights, Urwiler said.

“Changes in the show occur each year, so the show will look fresh and different from the previous year. Our goal is to enhance the show with a percentage of newer displays,” Urwiler said in the release.

Continued from page 11 The powers with an interest in destroying Daesh include Russia, Iran, Hezbollah, the Shia militias in Iraq, Kurdish forces in Syria and Iraq, British forces in Syria and Iraq, the Assad regime in Syria and perhaps France, the United States and Britain, he said.

“A coalition of that scale could easily prevail militarily over Daesh, but there would be consequences,” McIntyre said. “It would leave in its wake a Syria once again thoroughly controlled by an Assad military dictatorship. It would leave an Iraq ruled by a Shia majority. The Sunni minority would have no rights.”

“It would decisively shift the balance of power in the Middle East away from Sunnis and toward Shiites,” McIntyre added. “And for those very reasons, I’m telling you right now, that this winnable war against Daesh will not be undertaken.

Don’t wait for it. Don’t hope for it. It’s not going to happen.”

If it did, it would result in “howls of outrage” from U.S. allies in the area – Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel, he said.

Such a move would shift the balance of power toward Iran, restore Assad’s dictatorship in Syria and strengthen Russia’s role as a world power – which the U.S. would not support.

“You can make the case that these are good reasons for avoiding such a showdown with Daesh,” McIntyre said.

“But whether they are good reasons or bad, they mean the U.S. is not committed to defeating Daesh at any cost. I’m not even sure that France … is committed to defeating Daesh at any cost.”

Western nations, including France and the United States, will take up progressive anti-terrorism measures, including tightened border patrols, heightened surveillance of Muslims and increased policing, he said.

“All of which are going to be utterly ineffective,” McIntyre said. “Such measures are recruiting posters for the next round of angry, frustrated disillusioned, idealistic and stupid young men who are exploited by Daesh, tools to be wrapped in a suicide bomber’s belt and unleashed each time people are vilified for their faith – each time a woman is harassed for wearing a veil, each time people are searched on street for looking Muslim. ...

Instead, it gives Daesh exactly what it wants – another generation of cannon fodder.”

It would take a revolution of change to stop the cycle, he said. Great powers always will put the fight against terrorism at a lower priority than maintaining their own geopolitical power, McIntyre said, and will engage in their own terrorism, as well when it suits their interests.

“Terrorism exists in symbiosis with tyranny and imperial [reality],” McIntyre said. “You must dry up those twin sources.”

Officials: Fox Valley Park District bond affirmation to save taxpayers $3.4M editorial@kcchronicle.com The Fox Valley Park District has maintained an AA+ bond rating that will create $3.4 million in savings for taxpayers, according to a news release from the district.

The refunding of existing bonds will lower the interest rate on about $29.5 million in park bonds, the release stated. This will result in reduced future property tax liabilities for residents, according to the release.

Standard and Poor’s has affirmed the AA+ bond rating, the release stated. The

district serves Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery.

The park district decided to refinance its debt and lower future interest payments by 9 percent because of the drop in interest rates in recent years coupled with the strong bond rating, according to the release.

“As stewards of community tax dollars, we are excited to provide these significant savings,” Park District Board President Bob Vaughan stated in the release.

The park district has held the tax levy flat during each of the past four years, according to the release.

Preparing for our future For the past several months, we’ve undergone an extensive self-evaluation at the Geneva Public Library in order to serve you better.

Libraries are changing, and our patrons use materials that range from physical books to downloadable media; they use the library for meeting and connecting; they come to create – and we need to determine the best way to provide a full array of 21st-century services.

Our process began with a community wide survey, followed by six focus group discussions with different segments of our community.

We’re currently reviewing a needs assessment prepared by architectural firm StudioGC that analyzes our demographics, library use, operational costs and other factors to evaluate how the current facility is or is not serving our community. Key issues include: • How to provide patrons with new and expanded services that will prepare them for the 21st century; • How our building age and layout are impacting our operational and staffing costs; • How our physical space, square footage and parking limitations affect the

More than 64,000 girls participate in high school sanctioned field hockey each year. Because their chosen sport renders these young female athletes more susceptible to potentially disastrous head, facial, and eye injuries, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) issued a protective eyewear mandate requiring all high school field hockey players to wear protective eyewear in NFHS-sanctioned competitions. Since then, a study conducted to gauge the mandate’s effects has found that wearing protective eyewear resulted in a threefold reduced risk of orbital and eye injuries in high school field hockey players.

While protective eyewear remains voluntary in nonNFHS sanctioned competitions and other field hockeyrelated play, it is hoped that players and parents will take note of protective eyewear’s benefit.

P.S. While youth sports such as baseball and softball are gradually adopting the use of protective facemasks for batters, pitchers, and infielders, amateur field hockey lags behind in eye protection in amateur elite field hockey.

Mice madness After seven years, I’ve learned that there are many benefits to having a miniature schnauzer running around my home. Not only is my dog unique (she’s a white schnauzer, which is uncommon), but she’s also incredibly goofy and adorable.

From personal experience, miniature schnauzers are very friendly, great cuddling dogs and not very temperamental. After I got my dog, I did some basic research on the miniature schnauzer breed and discovered that they were originally bred to catch little critters, such as mice. This always made me wonder how my dog would act if she ever came face to face with a small critter.

About a month or so ago, I was lying on my couch late at night when all of a sudden I heard an odd, unexplainable noise coming from what seemed like the walls in my kitchen. Since I was half asleep, I assumed the noise was either the wind whooshing against the house or just a ghost making some ruckus.

Basically, I did not think anything of it. Yet, the same sound kept happening almost every day around midnight.

Still, I brushed it off and assumed my mind was playing tricks on me due to sleepiness.

I refused to tell my parents or brothers about the strange sounds I was hearing simply because I thought they were nothing important. Nonetheless, one afternoon my brother was in the kitchen when all of a sudden he claims to have seen a mouse run around in the kitchen and then run back into a corner in the wall.

Let’s just say that those weird noises that I had been hearing finally made sense. I always wondered why my dog, the supposedly great rodent catcher that she is, did not smell the mouse hiding in my house.

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina Due to the mouse chaos, everyone in my home was in a bit of a panic mode after discovering that we had a critter running around. We never had any mice in our house before, so we had no clue how to deal with the problem.

We bought a mouse trap and slapped some peanut butter on it, hoping that would work.

Luckily, after a few days, the mouse fell for the old trick.

One mouse down; we assumed the problem was solved.

Of course, we had been mistaken. On the ledge of the fireplace in my family room, my mom had placed some tree branches with berries on them in vases for an autumn decoration. Well, we discovered that someone had eaten some of the berries off of the tree branches, and it wasn’t my dog.

On another night, my dad placed a mouse trap with peanut butter on the fireplace, hoping that would kill the second mouse. The next morning, my dad checked the trap to find that the peanut butter was gone, but the trap didn’t go off; just our luck.

As for our current mouse situation, while we have yet to catch the mouse crawling around in my family room, I’m sure we will soon. Now, I think it’s best to try and train my dog to properly catch mice like she was bred to do.

To the Editor: Following the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, at least 20 U.S. state governors said they will not accept refugees in their states. Although it seems the federal government can take in refugees no matter what the states say, without state support the task of helping the refugees will be that much more difficult.

As of now, thousands of refugees are hoping to find safe havens away from their war-torn countries to build a better life for their children and themselves.

As of now, there is a call to reject refugees based on the fact that they are Muslim and they will present a security risk to all Americans. As of now, I no longer believe our country stands by the values we were founded on.

I believe wholeheartedly that we need to grant these refugees asylum. It is our moral – no – our obligation as humans to grant these refugees

I believe that the word “Muslim” – and the thought that being a Muslim means being a terrorist – has corrupted our idea of these refugees. They are people before they are Muslim, just as many of us are people before we are Christian.

And if we are Christian before we are human, should we not consider that rejecting the refugees would be anti-Christian?

I understand we need to protect ourselves from possible terrorists sneaking in with the refugees (which is why I support refugee background checks), and I understand that we have to find a way to shelter and take care of them until

But, I believe that just as the world came together to stand with Paris – from the various countries lighting their landmarks in blue, white and red; to people changing their profile pictures on social media to include French colors – Americans can come together to help people in need.

I believe that we should analyze the risks and make sure they are taken care of, but not be so paralyzed by fear that we ignore the plight of our fellow men and women.

I believe that our love and kindness for others should win over the fear plaguing our hearts.

Designer sees ‘Scroodles’ take off Catching up with St. Charles resident Jim Butts

St. Charles resident Jim Butts of Mad Sally Games recently worked with others to develop the word game app “Scroodles.” A launch party for the release of “Scroodles” took place in September, where friends and family gathered to celebrate the app, wearing T-shirts and other apparel to show their support, which Butts called “just awesome.”

After nearly two years of working with a development and artistic team, Butts, a 2001 Geneva High School graduate, not only developed a new app called “Scroodles,” but he also formed the company Mad Sally Games.

The company is named after Butts’ now 3-year-old daughter, Madelyn Sally Butts – shortened to Mad Sally Games for the company name. The business officially started in early 2014 and runs out of Butts’ home in St. Charles.

“Scroodles,” which was released Sept. 3, is a word game app that combines word creation similar to Scrabble with a strategic battle system that is reminiscent of old school, role-playing games. Butts, 33, was the lead designer, working with both Mitesh Shah (lead programmer) and Art Vogt (lead 2-D artist) to create the app, which has now received more than 146,000 downloads.

The name “Scroodles” is derived from the words “scribble” and “doodle.”

Instead of earning points when a user spells words, the object is to spell words to erase the “bad guys” – or the Scroodles.

Scroodles are – as Butts described – “little, fun and cute-bad drawings.”

“Bad” meaning they are the villains.

Erasing each of the Scroodles advances a user level by level, with power-ups and in-app purchases, as Butts referred to them, available upon purchase.

Butts caught up with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey to talk more about the process of putting “Scroodles” together, among other topics.

Chris Casey: Where did the idea come from for this app?

Jim Butts: When you’re in video game designing, which I have done for roughly eight years, you often switch jobs when a game is completed or lose your job if a game is canceled. So after losing two jobs and basically bouncing

around between a couple of companies, telling them how to make a game, I decided, “Why not try this myself?”

So it sort of started up out of that. I thought it was going to be something short and easy and instead it turned into this long project that took over two years to complete. Unfortunately, I’m not rich, which would have been the best result, but it’s rewarding in other ways and I have brought in some money from it.

Casey: But why a word game?

Butts: Well, I have always loved games like Scrabble and Words With Friends. Another reason I did it is because I thought it would be easy, and I was kind of wrong. So I created it with a simple kind of start, sort of like a battle Scrabble. You had your typical fantasy tropes, like dragons and knights, but the more I got into it, the more I liked the game. But I still felt like something was missing ... like it wasn’t complete. I wanted to make something with a wider appeal, and that’s kind of what inspired

Casey: Talk a bit about the process – the time it took and difficulty of putting it all together.

Butts: When I was unemployed, it wasn’t so bad. I had free time to work on a pack of projects while looking for a paying job. Once I got the paying job, every free moment away from work or family was spent on developing and creating “Scroodles.” I think anyone who is dedicated to a passion or hobby can relate. I had friends jokingly saying things like, “When are you going to get this game finished so we can see you again?” It’s a lot of fun playing a game, but it’s also fun working with a team to create something like this that people are going to enjoy. She scaled herself back to participating only in volleyball upon arriving at St. Charles North in 2012, but that simply harnessed Anderson’s energy and impact.

Admittedly amped and active in nearly any situation – let alone those on the court

volleyball All-Area teams and Coach of the Year.

– Anderson, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Volleyball Player of the Year, even speaks about her approach with urgency.

“I never really take a long amount of time off. I don’t like to not play,” she said. “I always have to be doing something.

“It kind of just keeps my mindset about getting stronger, getting better. I think hard

work pays off. It’s something that I live by, because I’ve seen results from it.”

A senior outside hitter, Anderson smacked a team-high 396 kills in 2015, boosting the North Stars to a 34-4 season that included an Upstate Eight Conference River Division title and a berth in the Class 4A East Aurora Sectional Semifinals.

Upstart Naperville North rallied late in the third set to end the North Stars’ season, but with longtime friends, teammates and classmates Daley Krage, Sam Lappin and Jaclyn Taylor in tow alongside a cast of talented underclass-

men, Anderson felt reassured in the season after a rare respite this month.

“I would take that season with those girls over a late tournament run in a heartbeat,” Anderson said. “Because I think that’s more important to us, is being able to have those friendships and memories and such a great season. Yeah, it didn’t turn out how we wanted to, but there’s not much that we can be disappointed about from this year.”

In a way, Anderson’s commitment to play collegiately at DePaul extends those good vibes, at least as far as her friends and cohorts are con-

cerned. Krage, a Northwestern-bound outside hitter, will be nearby, while Taylor, a setter headed to Creighton, will share the Big East Conference with Anderson. North Stars coach Lindsey Hawkins also is glad Anderson, an intensely family-devoted person, elected to stay close to home in the hopes of contributing to the DePaul program right away.

“She wants her family and friends to be able to come see her, so I’m excited about that opportunity, because it’s going to be extremely hard for me to let her go,” Hawkins said.

Anderson contributed to the varsity right away, shifting from right-side hitter to middle hitter before setting up permanent camp at outside hitter as a junior.

Hawkins still beams about the way Anderson embraced

and seized the opportunity.

Having sensed Krage’s eventual stardom from a longstanding family bond that preceded coaching Krage’s older sisters, Ashley and Taylor, she remembers being told, “Oh, you’re getting Claire, too.”

That all sounded enticing, but given Anderson’s penchant for other activities then – including soccer, softball and horseback riding, the latter of which she still enjoys – Hawkins still awaited her debut with some won-

der.

Imagine that now.

“She’ll forever be one of those players that I remember, and I just feel very blessed to have gotten to know her and grown so close to her,” Hawkins said. “I’m super excited to watch what she does at DePaul, because I think they’re getting a great player in her.”

One final club season with Marengo-based Club Fusion is all that separates Anderson from the beginning of her collegiate career.

She began working with an agility coach at St. Charles training facility Get Fast Inc. in June.

The work hinged on breaking down Anderson’s running and jumping technique and also put a premium on weightlifting in the process.

“I’m able to hit the ball harder and touch higher, and it’s been a huge difference,” Anderson said. “I can already tell that I’m quicker.

My vertical has already gone up. And it’s not just the workouts. They really train your

mind, too, to be able to be tough in certain ways. And I think that really helped me this year.”

Anderson’s increased vertical naturally has augmented the height she can touch.

This week, she said that figure was 9 feet, 7 inches, nearly two inches higher than when she entered the Get Fast program.

The top of the net rests 7 feet, 4 inches from the ground. Anderson’s credo of “Getting stronger, getting better” sounds about right.

BATAVIA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

BATAVIA – While feeling evenly matched heading into Saturday’s 7A quarterfinal with Cary-Grove, the Batavia football team knew it would need a break or bounce to go its way after the Trojans took a 28-7 lead with just over four minutes left in the third quarter.

After quarterback Kyle Niemiec ran in a touchdown from six yards out to pull the Bulldogs within two scores, they got a big chance to get back into the game, which resulted in more frustration.

Batavia freshman kicker Jack Carlson’s ensuing kickoff was a high, short kick that the wind had some fun with. It was muffed by the Cary-Grove return man, bouncing into the air, but directly into the hands of another Trojan to keep possession.

“You can’t blame the game on stuff like that because we could have played better, but, I mean, we couldn’t get any breaks,” Niemiec said. “[Coach Dennis Piron] looked up after that and said, ‘God... give us something.’ “ The result of that CaryGrove possession was a 31yard touchdown run, the third of the game for Trojans junior running back Ryan Magel, which was a back-breaker for the Bulldogs.

Bounces like that kickoff, combined with a few costly Batavia fumbles that found the hands of Cary-Grove defenders, aided what Piron knew could change the outcome against good football teams once reaching this level of the postseason.

“You give a team like that a chance to flip the momentum, and that’s what they need and run with it,” Piron said. “Once you chase a team like that, it’s extremely tough.”

Maryland freshman libero Kelsey Wicinski, a Geneva product, has embraced a leadership role in her first collegiate women’s volleyball season.

Wicinski finds ‘one big family’ with Terps Kelsey Wicinski’s coaches told her not to be a freshman.

That’s a difficult instruction to follow when you’re, you know, a freshman.

In her first year playing volleyball at the Maryland, the former Geneva standout has had some surprising responsibility placed her shoulders, assigned the important on-court duty of libero, a position where she’s appeared 12 times already this season.

With a senior ahead of her at the same position, the role came as a bit of a shock for Wicinski.

“It did happen quick,” she said. “There’s a ... girl who was ahead of me as a senior [Amy Dion] — and she’s actually from our area (Algonquin) — but she’s amazing and super good, so I really was not expecting it at all.”

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber And with that surprise came the instruction from the coaching staff. The libero position involves a good deal of on-court leading, and that meant a freshman giving orders to upperclassmen. But, Wicinski says, it’s all gone swimmingly.

“When you’re libero, you’re kind of the leader of the back row, so I had to step up and not be as much of a freshman as I am,” she said.

“They would tell me, ‘Don’t be the freshman on the court.’ I have to act like I’m a veteran in the games and help lead the team.

“At first it was a little

intimidating, but my team has been really responsive to everything. We obviously still have great leaders that are older that are on the court.

But everyone has been super nice.”

The immediate success at Maryland is a dream come true for Wicinski, who said she’s always wanted to play in the Big Ten. Her older sister, Lauren, played volleyball at Michigan State, and watching that flipped the switch in Kelsey’s head that she wanted to follow in her older sister’s footsteps.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing in the Big Ten,” Wicinski said, “so when I saw that Maryland was in (the conference) and I visited the campus, I absolutely fell in love with the campus. And obviously I love coach (Steve)

Aird and the rest of the coaching staff, so that was a big selling point for me.”

Ending up on one of the easternmost campuses in the Big Ten isn’t exactly the regular game plan for a Chicago-area athlete, but Wicinski said Maryland found her and it was great from there.

And despite the distance from home, being in the Big Ten means road games are easy reaches for her parents, Rob and Gina. The Terps have already played in Indiana twice and Michigan twice.

They close the regular season against Northwestern in Evanston. Road games have provided opportunities for Wicinski’s parents to watch her play, and they’ve made it so that being so far from home hasn’t bothered her much yet.

“It’s actually really cool

because every time we’re on the road, my parents are able to drive and see me,” Wicinski said.”So it hasn’t been that bad being so far away. They get to see you play, and being far away isn’t that big of a deal.”

Maryland has been just a perfect fit for Wicinski: a great campus, Big Ten competition and a terrific atmosphere that she raved about.

“Everyone here is just on the same page,” she said.

“We’re all here to make Maryland this big thing, all of our programs really get it, and it’s just one big family.”

26 Flushing brain of waste may be reason for sleep Dear Dr. K: A friend told me the reason we sleep is to “flush out” our brain. What is this all about? Is this the reason we sleep?

Dear Reader: Many readers have written asking why we sleep, and we discussed it in yesterday’s column. Today, we will talk about the recent study you are asking about, which suggests one reason we sleep may be to flush out the brain.

For those who didn’t read yesterday’s column, a quick summary. There is evidence that during sleep, our mind and body benefit in several ways.

Perhaps most obvious, our muscles get a rest.

The fortunate exception is the special muscle that is our heart. We don’t want it to quit pumping – ever.

Do our other organs need a rest? Most of them keep working while we sleep.

But they all sustain some wear and tear from their work, during both the day and night. Therefore, they may need to repair certain injuries that have occurred during the day. During deepest sleep, hormones are released that stimulate tissue growth and muscle repair. And your immune system becomes primed to defend itself against infection the next day.

Does our brain need the rest? Brain waves are very active during sleep, but our brain is doing different things during sleep than when awake.

For example, it dreams.

Which raises the question of why we dream.

Sigmund Freud thought dreaming was our way of dealing with hidden conflicts, desires and fears.

He thought we needed to sleep because we needed to dream.

In the past 10 years, scientists here at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere have published a great deal of

Now to your question. A truly remarkable study was published two years ago. To explain what was found, I first need to explain some concepts. Our brains are filled with billions of different kinds of cells.

Between those cells is space through which fluid passes.

It’s as if there are little rivers running through the brain.

The study was of mice, whose brains are not terribly different from ours in many respects. (Granted, their brains couldn’t come up with the theory of general relativity. But their brains are much better than ours at smelling cheese.) The study found that during sleep, the little rivers that run between brain cells increase greatly in size. As a result, many substances made by brain cells (including cell waste material) get flushed out of the brain much more efficiently.

For example, two molecules called beta-amyloid and tau are flushed out of the mouse brain more efficiently during sleep. These two molecules build up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

So maybe your friend is right. One important purpose of sleep may be to clear potentially toxic material out of the brain.

And perhaps we feel restored in the morning for that reason. It is an arresting, and plausible, possibility.

I attended a few services and have decided to become a member. I like the fact that Mormons are family-oriented and forbid smoking and drinking. These are things I always have believed in and practiced.

In two months, I will be a member of my new church.

I know my parents will not be happy when they find out I’ve turned my back on the religion of my birth, but I’m 18 and need to live my life the way I want to.

entering Knox College was to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in four years. I reached that goal. My next goal was to teach and be a varsity basketball coach at the high school level. Earning amaster’s degree in education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. helped me reach goal number two. My educational experiences gave me the background

to reach goal number three – to write a syndicated column for teens.

I thoroughly enjoyed my years as teacher and coach, and feel fortunate and privileged to be able to write a syndicated column for teens.

I don’t plan to change careers, but still, since you ask, there are some options that would be fun to explore.

For instance, I’d consider giving up this column to become manager of the Chicago Cubs or, perhaps, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

And I wouldn’t mind starring in a movie with Robert De Niro and Julia Roberts. Being president of Harvard University doesn’t sound too bad, either.

But my chances of being a major league manager, an orchestra conductor, a screen actor or the President of Harvard are fantasies.

Teens must set goals that might be attained within the limits of their talents. I’m also aware that one person’s fantasy could well be another’s talent. If teens think they can accomplish their goals, then they should go for them 100 percent.

Wise bridge players take care of losers and get the maximum value from their trumps. What would a sage South do here in six spades after West leads the club queen?

What were West’s more effective starts?

North’s three-club rebid was a double negative, warning of a very bad hand. Over three hearts, if North had given preference with three spades, it would have been nonforcing. Holding three-card support and a king, he jumped to four spades.

South should try to handle bad breaks in the majors, especially in hearts. Declarer needs to notice the power of dummy’s trumps.

He must ruff the club with a high trump, cash one high heart, then overtake the spade seven with dummy’s eight. Now South leads a heart toward his hand.

It cannot help East to ruff, so he discards a diamond. South wins and repeats the medicine. He overtakes his spade nine with dummy’s 10 and plays another heart. Again, East pitches. Now declarer wins, leads a fourth heart, and – knowing East can overruff the dummy – throws a diamond from dummy.

A moment later, South cashes his diamond ace, trumps his last diamond in the dummy, ruffs a club back to his hand, removes East’s remaining trump and claims.

As you will have wisely surmised, West would have beaten the contract if he had led his trump or a diamond – tough assignments.

Dear Abby: I loved the letter from “Ready For The Reunion” (July 31), who wondered why some people in her high school graduating class didn’t respond to the notice of the reunion. Some of us would like to completely forget high school and everything associated with it.

I missed my 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th year reunions.

I did consider going to the last one, but then I started reading my former classmates’ posts on the reunion website. It seems everyone is retired, wealthy, has numerous grandchildren, at least one retirement home in an exotic locale and spends their time relaxing and jetting around (or so they say). I’m still working, not wealthy, not particularly successful and have moved from my home state to the backwoods of middle America. Basically, I have a boring life, so I have nothing to brag about. I didn’t go.

I’m still in contact with the important people in my life from high school and just don’t need the aggravation of attending a reunion.

“It shouldn’t scream, ‘Look at me, first!’ It should just say, ‘Come over and make a drink.’” A wooden cart, such as the Blaine in walnut or cherry, makes for a warm, humble

The executive editorial director of decorating, home and style for Martha Stewart Living loves a good cocktail party but has lived with a silver tray on a sideboard for years. Recently, he decided it was time for his own serving station. “You don’t think a bar cart is an essential, but it is becoming an essential,” he said.

“You don’t seem pretentious anymore if you have a bar cart. It’s not just a trend; it’s really a modern way of living.”

Some bar cart possibilities: • A clear bar cart blends into the background, adding a useful hosting tool without adding visual clutter. • Sroka’s pick for a classic option is the Threshold Metal/ Wood/Leather Bar Cart in gold ($130, target.com). “That’s really a nice sort of transitional look,” he said. “You could mix that in a lot of interiors.” Railings prevent bottles from tipping.

• Look beyond home furnishing retailers for creative options, Sroka advised. Luxor, for example, manufactures specialty carts for work environments, but many of its utility carts could stand in as bar carts.

The industrial feel comes with industrial function, too: The SSC-3 has casters with locking brakes, a 1-inch lip around the top and middle shelves, and 300-pound carrying capacity ($148, webstaurantstore.com).
