Police chief to leave for Schaumburg

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin will leave the St. Charles Police Department next month to take a job in Schaumburg.

Lamkin, who has led the department since 2003, said his decision isn’t a reflection on St. Charles.

“St. Charles has been good to me,” he said Monday. “For me, it’s another opportunity.

It’s not like I was disgruntled or anything.”

Lamkin’s last day will be Dec. 27.

He is expected to begin work as Schaumburg police chief Dec. 30, pending approval by the Village Board.

Schaumburg Village Manager Brian Townsend is set to recommend Lamkin’s appointment today.

Townsend, who left his post as St. Charles city administrator this year, said Lamkin was chosen from 83 applicants.

Several people – including recruitment firm Voorhees & Associates, the interim police chief, the human resources director, department directors, police department employees, the village mayor and the Village Board – participated in the selection process, he said.

“He came out on top,” Townsend said. “This was not a selection that was all about me and my prior relationship with Jim.” Similarly, Lamkin said he enjoyed working for Townsend in St. Charles and will enjoy working for him again, but that wasn’t why he applied.

Lamkin will receive an annual salary of $150,000 from Schaumburg, according to a news release from the village.

In St. Charles, Lamkin’s budgeted wages were set at $144,125 for the 2013-14 fiscal year, with a total compensation of nearly $164,000, according to city documents dated April 15.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said Lamkin has served the community well.

“I wish him nothing but absolute success,” Rogina said.

Lamkin, who achieved the rank of deputy chief in Elgin before coming to St. Charles, said he is proud of being able to provide good service

throughout his tenure, especially during the recession.

Under his leadership, the number of calls for service steadily declined, and the police department opened a full-service firing range for regular firearm practice and training in 2012, according to a news release issued by the city of St. Charles.

Additionally, the release states, Lamkin serves on the boards of several organizations, including Tri-Com, Kane County Emergency Telephone Systems, Northeastern Multi-Regional Training and the North Central Narcotics Task Force.

St. Charles City Administrator Mark Koenen said in the release that he wishes Lamkin well in his future professional endeavors.

“I have worked with Jim over his 10 years at the city and am impressed with the relationships he has built both within the city and among local organizations,” Koenen said. “This has resulted in first-rate emergency responses to incidents within the community.”

According to the release, an interim police chief will be named in St. Charles.

Lamkin said he intends to leave the police department in a good place and will work to make sure the transition of leadership is smooth.

He noted he will be available by phone should the department need his help after his last day.

“It’s not leaving something,” Lamkin said. “It’s going to something else.”

Volunteer spirit

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Tia Claffy understands that people have hundreds of places where they can choose to spend their time.

So when people volunteer for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Claffy and her colleagues at the Geneva-based nonprofit want to make sure they get the best experience possible.

“It is our priority to honor those people and their time as best we can,” Claffy said.

Claffy has spent the past five years as the food bank’s volunteer manager, a position that has changed slightly since she began, she said.

Now, she said, an online system does most of the volunteer scheduling, which allows the staff to have more time with the volunteers and to grow the program.

Over the years, Claffy has gotten to know some individuals quite well, she said. She also has seen friendships form among regulars, noting some get lunch after their shifts.

“It’s really neat to see because they weren’t connected before they met at the food bank,” Claffy said.

But Claffy doesn’t spend all of her time with the volunteers.

On this day in early November, she spent her morning working with partner agencies – such as soup kitchens and shelters – on ways to improve their volunteer programs, she said. For example, she said they focused on creating volunteer position descriptions.

“We’re trying to build them up,” Claffy said of the agencies, noting many are run by volunteers.

Claffy understands the importance of volunteers.

Last year, she said, more than 14,000 people volunteered at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, which serves 13 counties and also has centers in Park City and Loves Park.

ity’s warehouse likely would go to waste, Claffy said. Or replacing the volunteers – who annually log more than 100,000 hours – would require the addition of 50 full-time staff members.

To make sure volunteers make the most of their time, Claffy and her colleagues plan the projects that need to be done – such as repacking food and blocking out information on labels, she said. She said they also explain the logic behind each task so volunteers understand the value in their work.

The winter holidays are an especially busy time of year, Claffy said. The food bank has more product to process because of the various food drives held, and more groups tend to volunteer.

She said the hope is to get the holiday volunteers wanting to come back during other times of the year.

While most of the volunteers help in the warehouse, some assist in the office with such jobs as filing and letter stuffing, Claffy said.

Ages 8 and older can help, she said.

“It’s so great to see people of every single age get involved,” Claffy said.

She said their pride in their work is evident during volunteer appreciation events, which also are open to volunteers’ families.

“They’re so proud of being a part of the food bank and the work that they’re doing,” she said.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As Debbie Notaro added layers of greenery to a fiberglass pot on Saturday, she told a crowd of about 50 people that making decorative holiday planters should be fun, playful, organic and traditional.

Notaro, owner of My Secret Garden, offered tips on using fresh greenery, such as spruce tops, noble fir boughs and gold lace juniper, during the holiday season at a seminar at Wasco Nursery and Garden Center in St. Charles.

She showed the versatility of filling a planter with various plants to decorate a home or business, and she said such planters could last as long as March.

“I like to put things in that are not necessarily Christmas,” she said. “As winter goes on, you can change it up.”

After laying many branches of evergreens and other plants into a large container, she demonstrated how to change the look throughout the season. Some of the elements she added included bows, pine cones, colored twine shaped into a ball, large decorative candy canes, artificial fruits, birch logs and hearts made of wire.

“You can keep changing

the design for very little money,” she said.

Notaro advised workshop attendees to weigh down light containers using bricks so they wouldn’t blow over. She said she also waters the planter once the decorations are complete, as the water tends to freeze in the winter and helps keep the greens from fading into a rusty color.

She said to also avoid brushing off any snow that might accumulate, as that helps keep the container moist.

Kim Schroeder, a buyer and sales representative for Wasco Nursery and Garden Center, said workshops such as Saturday’s are held almost every month. She said Notaro’s focus on Saturday was using all live materials to spruce up various items many people have around their homes, such as outdoor benches, bird houses, bird feeders, bird baths and mailboxes.

She said other workshops throughout the year include working with native plants and perennials, and pruning techniques.

She noted that the nursery is open all year round, except for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. “If you want help designing installations for the spring, the best thing is to come early,” she said.

GENEVA – As storms swept through the area Sunday morning, those at Good Templar Park in Geneva predicted the severe weather wouldn’t be good for the Cottages in the Woods Scandinavian Holiday Craft Sale.

Still, the participating cottages remained open to those willing to expose themselves to the elements, and organizers worked to prepare a hot lunch for visitors.

“The place was so packed [Saturday], we could not move,” said Jody Moreen,

who was part of the event.

“We could hardly keep up.”

More than 300 people attended the event Saturday, Moreen said, using the $5 admission fee for ages 12 and older as a way to estimate the attendance.

Now in its fifth year, the holiday craft show not only acts as a fundraiser for the park but also is an opportunity for the public to tour about a dozen cottages in Good Templar Park, 628 Eastside Drive, Geneva.

“It’s a chance for us to open our park to our neighbors,” cottage owner Linda Schweikhofer said.

Fellow cottage owner Jan Freidinger said she is proud of her ability to preserve the structure, which once was owned by her grandmother.

Except for the layout, she said, much has remained the same throughout the years.

“I took baths in this [sink],” Freidinger said.

While Freidinger’s cottage offered children’s craft activities, others were occupied by vendors, such as Debbie Anderson of Racine, Wis. Anderson brought Scandinavian merchandise and imports to sell and hoped for a busy day, she said.

There will be an assortment of greens, including pine, cedar, juniper, frasier fir, noble fir, silver fir and Oregonian.

“It comes down to getting the redevelopment drafted,” Rasmussen said. “Drafting a redevelopment agreement is not simple.”

Fourth Ward Alderman James Martin, though he voted in favor of the extension, said he agreed with Lewis, and noted that he “wouldn’t be agreeable” to another extension down the road.

“I agree with Maureen. I think that’s too long,” he said.

“We’ve waited long enough.”

Batavia woman dies in crash

By CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@shawmedia.com EARLVILLE – A 20-yearold woman from Batavia died early Sunday morning after the pickup truck she and four others were in crashed near the Lee County border with LaSalle County.

Five people were in the front seat of a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado at the time of the crash, Lee County Sheriff John Varga said. Anna Danielson, 20, of Batavia, was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene.

Varga said alcohol was a factor in the crash, and that charges are pending against the driver, Jakub D. Baker, 21, of Leland.

Varga said Baker drove

the truck through the intersection of North South and Welland roads in eastern Lee County and rolled in a field.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived at 12:39 a.m. Sunday, and according to a news release, by then Baker and a passenger, Tyler Becker, 19, of Earlville, had fled. Becker was later lo-

cated at a local hospital, and Baker was found at his home in Leland.

Two other passengers, Max Boltz, 19, of Earlville, and Danny Heath, 22, of Leland, were taken to Mendota Hospital.

The crash still is being investigated, Varga said.

ST. CHARLES – The long-awaited third phase of the First Street Redevelopment project in downtown St. Charles was granted a ninth extension Monday, and aldermen suggested that all parties involved adhere to a more specific timeline.

First Street LLC has until April 8 to submit its revised PUD preliminary plan for the First Street site. Bob Rasmussen of First Street LLC gave aldermen a timeline for reaching certain objectives, such as filing an application for a concept plan on or before Dec. 2 and meeting with the Planning and Development Committee on Jan. 13.

City staff members also suggested that the former Harris Bank property be transferred to the city by Feb. 3.

City staff members originally recommended that

the deadlines be Feb. 18, and Third Ward Alderman William Turner suggested moving the deadline back to April, citing a busy time around the holidays.

An ordinance authorizing the execution of the purchase agreement between the city and the developer, SMN Development, was granted an 11th amendment Monday evening, with a timeline very similar to the one given to First Street LLC. The city asked SMN Development to provide an assessment of the financial viability and marketability of the proposed building by April 8.

The city also asked the developer to provide a schedule for implementing the project, which would include a construction start date.

Both parties also will provide updates to city staff as the project moves along.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Liquor Commission will consider a penalty for the Thirsty Fox Pub after the owners admitted they were guilty of a liquor violation.

During a hearing Monday, liquor licensee Samantha Stone said the establishment was guilty of serving alcohol to two people under the age of 21 on the night of Oct. 18. She said the violation happened after “a perfect storm.”

She said her husband, Edward Stone, had left to take care of their dog while she was putting toilet paper in the bathroom. During that time, the person responsible for checking IDs at the door left for a few minutes without telling anyone, which is against their protocol.

“When [Edward Stone] came back downstairs, a police officer was already there,” Samantha Stone said. “It was a matter of four minutes.”

The sentence could include revoking or suspending the bar’s liquor license, or imposing a fine.

Geneva bank gets Mayor’s Choice Award

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Bank and Trust received Mayor Kevin Burns’ Mayor’s Choice Award for Business Investment, for community leadership and preserving the historic character of its new home, the former Pure Oil building, 514 W. State St. The award was given recently at a holiday kickoff breakfast at the Herrington Inn & Spa. It is the second annual award.

The first was given to Michael Simon, owner of The Little Traveler and other downtown stores.

In presenting the award, Burns praised the bank for its investment, but also for sponsoring the Geneva Folk Festival, the music in the downtown Saturday before it and as an organizer of the 2013 Shop Local/Bank Local promotion currently underway.

“Geneva Bank and Trust has shown its commitment in so many ways, including historic preservation, downtown merchant marketing programs and support of the chamber and city events,” Burns said. “They are indeed true partners.”

Darla Yhost, vice president and bank manager of Geneva Bank and Trust, accepted the award on behalf of the bank.

“We’re just very honored that the city recognized us like this,” Yhost said. “It’s so much fun being downtown.

We love it. We absolutely love this location. It’s nice to be downtown.”

Geneva Bank and Trust is involved in 26 community organizations and performed more than 600 hours of community service this year, officials said.

The bank also organized 47 Geneva merchants to par-

ticipate in a Shop Local/ Bank Local program campaign.

The merchants contributed more than $2,200 in gift certificates and merchandise.

Yhost said they were able to put together three prize raffle baskets, one worth $1,000 and two worth more than $500.

“We’re going to have the mayor pull three winners at the Christmas Walk [on] Dec. 6, when he lights the tree,” Yhost said. “You can bring receipts in through Dec. 5.”

To participate, shoppers only need to bring their Geneva receipts to the bank to get one raffle ticket per receipt. Each receipt is stamped so it can’t be used twice, Yhost said.

In giving the award, Burns noted that the bank’s renovation of the historic Pure Oil building, built in 1935, garnered state and national recognition from historic preservation agencies. It closed in 1995.

When the bank project was first proposed last year, it included razing the building because renovation would be too costly.

The public objected, and the project was approved after being redesigned to save the building, using the service bays for drive-thrus.

“They listened to the community,” Burns said of the building’s new owners.

“And what they responded with is arguably a beautiful restoration of an iconic building.”

The bank’s sign post is a genuine Pure Oil sign that was found in West Virginia, officials said.

The bank replaced the distinctive blue terra cotta roof tiles by tracking down the original manufacturer, who opened a production line that had not been used in 40 years, officials said.

CRYSTAL LAKE – Richard Ewart Aston, 81, of Crystal Lake. peacefully passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at his home.

Born Sept. 6, 1932, in Elgin, he was the son of the late Frank and Mattie (nee Boppre) Aston. He was united in marriage to Patricia Mae Robinson on Sept. 7, 1957, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Richard proudly served as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War. Richard was a championship bowler who loved to travel the world and spend time with his grandchildren. He remained active with the Marine Corps League and proudly represented the Marines in the Crystal Lake Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades for many years. He was known for his rhyming poetry, his kindness to all and his fondness for chatting with everyone he met. Richard recently visited his ancestral castle in Staffordshire, U.K., with his family.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Julie (Stephen) Cronin of Batavia, Laura (Kevin) McKinsey of St. Charles, Geri (Matthew) Weinstock of Chicago and Christine (Jeffrey) Morse of Winnetka; sons, Richard (Elizabeth) Aston of Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Thomas Aston of Crystal Lake; and grandchildren, John and Joseph Cronin, Matthew, Joshua and Nicholas Aston, Elizabeth, Patrick and Kathryn McKinsey, Frank and Lillian Weinstock, and Connor, Charlie, Josie and William Morse.

Dear friend, Well, at first, my Fiancé asked me not to write this. We had a big discussion about it. Finally, he understood what I was trying to do, and actually helped me write this letter to you.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen voted 8-2 Monday to amend its Comprehensive Plan in accordance with the wishes of some homeowners, resulting in amending Geneva’s Downtown/Station Area Master Plan.

The vote was the result of several meetings with property owners who did not want row house and multifamily residential land use desig-

nations for their property as shown on the land use plan.

The amendment involves properties south of East State Street extending along the east shoreline of the Fox River, west of South Bennett Street and Crissey Avenue down to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, officials said.

One of the Bennett Street property owners, Christine Kefer, said she and neighbors had sleepless nights until the council took final action.

“The strategic plan removed our homes and put new housing there,” Kefer said. “Our side of the river was placed into the Downtown Master Plan, [it] showed the city approved that plan for multifamily and high density multifamily along the east side of the river and south of the Mill Race Inn.” Kefer said aldermen were understanding to their concerns and she welcomed the council’s action, saying the

change had the support of both the plan commission and city staff.

First Ward Alderman Mike Bruno and Fourth Ward Alderman Ron Singer both voted against making the change.

“I still will be opposing [the amendment] because I think we’re changing it for the wrong reason,” Bruno said.

“And I think there is confusion as to what the downtown area master plan really is.”

The plan was approved a

year ago as a guide for directing downtown growth and change over the next 10 to 15 years. Its goal was to encourage more diversity in the type, cost and density of housing in and near downtown, as a way to support the downtown and its retail district.

In supporting the amendment, however, staff determined the plan’s potential benefit was not enough to outweigh concerns of local property owners of the area.

Residents object to electrical rate increase Residents at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting objected to a proposed increase in their electric bills.

Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm has told aldermen that additional revenues would be needed to account for increased purchase power costs and the depletion of rate stabilization reserves.

Holm told aldermen that even though the city’s total consumption is down, its overall cost for purchase power is up. “For the period from 2010 to 2013, our purchase power costs have increased a total of $7 million, or about 30 percent,” he said.

In 2007, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a longterm power contract to purchase electricity from the Prairie State Energy Campus in downstate Illinois.

Resident Sylvia Keppel at Monday’s meeting criticized that deal.

“I can’t understand why there were no escape clauses,” Keppel said during a public hearing on the city’s proposed $95.6 million budget. “You left no out when you signed those contracts.”

She urged aldermen to take action. Keppel was one of several residents who spoke out against a rate increase.

“This is a toxic asset that we need to dump,” Keppel said. “Have you thought about going after NIMPA that got us into this?”

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said the city hasn’t decided yet whether to seek an electric rate increase.

“That will only happen until after there is serious discussion by the City Council,” Schielke said. “There is nobody that wants to see

a significant increase in the electrical rate.”

The city has looked at selling off some of its power because it doesn’t need as much as expected because of the economic slowdown.

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis in August 2012 issued a report criticizing the Prairie State Energy Campus with charging more for power than promised.

HAROLD L. WHITE Born: Dec. 1, 1930; in Casey Died: Nov. 13, 2013; in Aurora MONTGOMERY – Harold L. White, 82, of Montgomery, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at Alden of Waterford in Aurora, with family by his side.

He was born Dec. 1, 1930, in Casey, the son of the late Jesse E. and Marie E. (nee Wilson). Harold was an instructor in the electronics and mathematic departments of Waubonsee Community College for 32 years before his retirement in 1997.

He developed training programs for adjunct faculty, consulted for local businesses and industry and was a published technical writer. Harold’s other interests included playing guitar, woodworking, photography, tennis, stained glass artistry and spending time with his dog, Charlie.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Michael Marzec, as well as his other caregivers for their support.

Harold is survived by his wife, Dona (nee Swanson), whom he married Oct. 10, 1985, and shared many happy memories; two daughters, Patricia (John) Theis of Florida and Elizabeth (Bryan) Heriaud of Yorkville; a son, Benjamin (Beth Hafenrichter) Porch of Oswego; stepdaughter, Maria (Michael) Greiner of North Aurora; stepson, Michael (Katrina) Hansen of Aurora; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald (Iris) White of Arizona. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald (Harriette) White.

The visitation with family and friends will be at 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m.

Governor visited damaged areas Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc took Gov. Pat Quinn for a brief tour Monday afternoon down Laura Lane in Diamond Estates.

Quinn toured the state’s most damaged areas. He declared seven counties disaster areas, including Grundy County. As of Monday afternoon, statewide there had been six deaths as a result of the 20 to 30 tornadoes that touched the ground Sunday, he said.

As they walked, Kernc bragged about her residents and their commitment to each other during this time of need.

“That spirit of Grundy County, Diamond, Coal City and Illinois is what it is all about,” Quinn told her.

“My people are amazing people,” Kernc replied.

Quinn held a news conference with local officials on the front lawn of a house on Laura Lane where the second floor of the home was exposed.

“The whole idea is survival and recovery, that’s why we are here today,” Quinn said to the crowd of storm survivors and media.

DIAMOND – Joe Pape was speeding down Broadway Street in Coal City.

It was about noon Sunday, and Joe, his wife Lisa, and their two children were coming home from church. They left early when they heard the tornado sirens go off.

“Coming down Broadway, you could see the clouds, black clouds, forming over the subdivision,” Pape recalled. “When we pulled into the driveway, we could see the funnel.”

As the Pape family rushed inside their house in Diamond Estates subdivision at 830 Crystal Lane, Joe felt a pang of regret.

“I saw the funnel and thought, ‘Oh God. What did I do?’ I brought us right into the lion’s den,” he said. “If I would’ve known how bad it was, I would have never left church.”

With only 20 seconds to spare, the Pape family made it to their basement. As Joe Pape listened to his windows breaking and his house’s “breathing,” he said a silent prayer – “God, please let us get through this.”

A few minutes later it was over, and the Pape family walked upstairs to find their house nearly destroyed. Windows, siding, porch, fence, cars, garage – all of it damaged.

Joe thinks it could be months before everything is repaired.

The Pape home is one of about 220 buildings in Diamond and Coal City that were damaged by the EF2 tornado that began at 12:22 p.m. Sunday three miles south/southwest of Coal City and ended 11 minutes later four miles north/northeast of Wilmington, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornado’s path reached 12.9 miles and had maximum wind speeds of 122 mph.

Four people were injured by the storm’s power; three of them occurred at a farm house at Berta and Spring roads, just down the street from Coal City Fire Protection District’s sta-

tion 2. This location was the fire department’s first call after the storm, according to district spokesman Nick Doerfler.

Firefighters on duty at Station 2 just before the tornado hit could see it coming from the firehouse, Doerfler said.

Luckily the station received no damage, but was running on a generator for power Monday. The command center for emergency response was set up there.

Of the 220 homes, Nicor suspended gas service to 29 residences by about 5 p.m. Monday, Doerfler said.

Cost estimates on the damage in the Diamond and Coal City area were not yet available, he said.

Diamond Estates subdivision was one of the worst-hit areas. All day Monday it was filled with homeowners, family, friends and strangers who came to volunteer their time to help with clean-up efforts.

“We’ll get through it,” Joe Pape said. “All of this can be fixed or replaced. My family is safe. That’s all that matters.”

Helping those affected by tornadoes It seems Mother Nature never ceases to amaze with her ferocity.

Her latest fury was unleashed Sunday, when severe storms and tornadoes ravaged the Midwest. Eighty reported tornadoes across the country. Six confirmed deaths in Illinois.

Up to 200 people injured in Illinois. Countless number of homes destroyed.

On Monday, it was determined that two of the tornadoes that touched down had preliminary ratings of EF-4, with wind speeds between 170 and 190 mph.

Those twisters wreaked havoc on southern Illinois near New Minden and on central Illinois near Peoria in Washington.

Closer to home, an EF-2 tornado ripped through Grundy County near Coal City. Wind speeds there reached between 111 and 135 mph.

Thankfully, Kane County was spared from the destruction seen across the state. But our hearts and thoughts go out to those were not as fortunate.

If you’d like to help fellow Illinoisans as they begin cleaning up after Sunday’s storms, here’s how: • The Central Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross is mobilizing teams of volunteers to help those affected by the tornadoes.

It says financial donations are the best way to help. You can donate money by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visiting redcross.org online. Tell them you want your donation to go to the central Illinois tornado response.

• The Salvation Army is accepting donations to help provide relief supplies. If you have the means, please consider helping those who are suffering at the hands of Mother Nature.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The only viable alternative to gun control To the Editor: Since the U.S. Congress has bowed to the wishes of the NRA and now anyone who wishes to own a gun can own a gun, perhaps it is time to educate and prepare our citizenry in the event of a shooting at the local mall, school, local bar, airport or at their place of employment.

Perhaps the local park districts can begin to offer classes. I heard a report on CNN on just this topic; it mentioned that it is not good enough to just duck

when you hear shots; it was suggested that, in the case of a mall, find a store that is closing their front pull-down gate and duck under it before it closes.

Maybe local police stations can offer classes, too, so that we can all be ready for, what seems to be, the next inevitable violent gun act.

This seems to be the only viable alternative to gun control.

Massive wind gusts made Saturday especially tricky for kickers, but Knox certainly didn’t mind when the wind worked in his favor.

“It’s awesome,” Knox said. “There’s nothing like it.”

Speed to burn: Batavia receiver/cornerback Rourke Mullins is perhaps the fastest member of the Bulldogs’ team, and he put his wheels to good use Saturday, catching a 54-yard touchdown pass from Micah Coffey in the third quarter for the Bulldogs’ final TD. “Every game I want to try to utilize my speed for my team,” Mullins said.

“Coach Piron has done a great job with

all of us getting our speed up during the offseason, and [offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari] gets me in places where I can use my speed every day.”

Mullins, who missed Batavia’s lone loss against Richards after a concussion suffered opening week against Glenbard North, has played more two-way ball in the second half of the season.

“I was able to work and get the position back [on defense], and I earned it,” Mullins said. “I love it. I love playing with the guys. They’re my brothers.”

Offensive explosion: If Aurora Christian can defeat visiting Stillman Valley on Saturday, the Eagles would face either Greenville or St. Joseph-Ogden in the 3A state championship game Nov. 29.

If it turns out to be Aurora Christian-Greenville, the potential for a heaping point total exists. Greenville defeated Mt. Carmel, 71-70, in a 3A quarterfinal Saturday that made waves statewide.

The Comets trailed, 70-49, before staging a miraculous comeback in the game’s final 2:30. Greenville recovered two onside kicks as part of the late uprising.

Comets quarterback Tyler Hutchinson reportedly threw for 648 yards and six touchdowns in the game.

Batavia’s Tucker Knox has managed to command Bulldogs fans’ appreciation despite his limited opportunities, including a field position-changing blast in the first quarter of the Bulldogs’ 19-14 win against Lake Forest in Saturday’s IHSA Class 6A state quarterfinal.

The Bulldogs’ first offensive possession began at their own 3-yard line, and Batavia was only able to advance the ball to the 17 before calling on Knox to punt. With a little help from the wind, Knox unloaded a 60-yard beauty that forced the Scouts to begin from their own 23-yard line.

Batavia’s defense held, the Bulldogs’ field position outlook subsequently improved and Batavia went ahead, 6-0, on its next possession after Anthony Scaccia scored on an 11-yard touchdown run.

For the season, Knox has punted 20 times for an average of about 37 yards a punt. Six times, he’s pinned opponents inside their own 20.

“I’ve been pretty happy with it,” said Knox, the Bulldogs’ backup punter last year. “I haven’t had to punt much, but I like the opportunity to help the team in any way I can.”

Batavia coach Dennis Piron lauded Knox’s performance, and said his reputation is one of the factors that emboldened him to call a fake punt despite the Bulldogs having a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter Saturday.

“I think Tucker might be one of the best punters if not the best in the state of Illinois,” Piron said. “He does special, special things.

“And part of the reason why we did fake it was because of the unexpectedness of us not punting it [because Knox is so solid].”

Knox said weightlifting and “practicing a lot” have boosted his punting prowess, but the 6-foot-6 senior is not just a specialist.

A quality athlete who also plays basketball for the Bulldogs, Knox has 11 pass receptions on the year as the tallest member of a deep Bulldogs receiving corps.

The maneuver didn’t work out as Batavia coach Dennis Piron hoped, but the Bulldogs’ defense stepped forward with a decisive stop late as the Bulldogs held on for a 19-14 win against Lake Forest in Saturday afternoon’s IHSA Class 6A state quarterfinal.

The Bulldogs (11-1) advance to a state semifinal next weekend at top-seeded and undefeated Rockford Boylan, which rallied past Prairie Ridge on Saturday in Rockford.

Batavia was near midfield, ahead 19-7, when – rather than punting into a substantial wind on fourth-and-3 – the Bulldogs called a fake. Punter

Tucker Knox’s pass overshot a wide-open Anthony Thielk, who appeared to stumble on his route.

“We’d been planning it all week,” Knox said. “We had it. They blitzed everyone. I overthrew it a little bit and he cramped up right as he started to run, so it’s tough, but I guess we didn’t need it.”

Explaining the call during a postgame interview on the field, Piron, referring to the wind, asked “You feeling this?”

“In practice [against the wind], we’d only been netting 20 [yards],” Piron said. “So we figured 20 max, net, and if we throw it and get [a first down], maybe the game is over. … It just didn’t seem to be that big of a gamble. We didn’t hit it.”

The Scouts (9-3) capitalized on the favorable field position, needing less than a minute of game time to score off a 1-yard Trent Williams touchdown run with 3:52 to play in

the fourth quarter. The extra point cut Batavia’s lead to 1914.

The Bulldogs’ offense then went three-and-out, necessitating the dreaded punt into the wind. Knox managed a solid boot, giving Lake Forest possession at the Scouts’ 48yard line with 2:57 to play.

With the game in the balance, the Scouts went backward on the possession – with a bad snap factoring in on third down – as Batavia’s defense coaxed three incompletions from quarterback Regis Durbin.

The Bulldogs then only needed one first down, which came on an Anthony Scaccia third-down run, to kill the clock. Scaccia rushed 31 times for 132 yards and scored both of Batavia’s first-half touchdowns, an 11-yard TD run and a 14-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Micah Coffey.

Batavia led, 12-7, at halftime, then went ahead 19-7

with 8:55 left in the third quarter after a 54-yard TD strike from Coffey to speedster Rourke Mullins.

“I motioned across, corner came out on me and Micah broke the pocket,” Mullins said. “The cornerback flew up on Micah, and I was able to keep on running. Micah saw me and was able to get it right to me.”

Coffey also connected on a 55-yard, deep-ball completion to receiver Jordan Zwart in the first quarter to set up Scac-cia’s TD run.

“The linemen gave us so much time, those are actually like the third read Micah has,” Piron said, referring to the two long receptions. “The delay didn’t pop open, and Micah had time to look, look, boom, there’s his kids that he knows. There’s his buddy, Rourke, and there’s his buddy, Zwart. Those kids make plays all season long. They’re playmakers.”

Saturday’s state title was a fitting way for the careers of five seniors to end. It was especially satisfying for sisters Maddie and Molly Haggerty.

Murison’s willingness to step up when needed perfectly represented the Spartans amid a season of overcoming various injuries.

“In the beginning of the season they kind of told me to work on setting because I didn’t know what I was going to do,” Murison said. “But I was willing to do anything to help the team. … They needed me there.”

NORMAL – Stepping onto the podium to accept her firstplace medal, St. Francis senior libero Sam Dubiel, with a big smile on her face, threw her arms in the air to celebrate.

Her St. Francis teammates wore smiles just as bright as they waited to receive the Class 3A state trophy and the program’s 10th overall state championship after their 2519, 25-7 win against LaSalle-Peru on Saturday at Redbird Arena. The consecutive Class 3A state titles are part of an impressive run that has seen the Spartans go 76-8 the past two seasons.

“It’s quite the experience and I couldn’t ask for a better team to have this experience with,” the Florida-bound Dubiel said. “Every year is a new year. The feeling is different from last year. It makes me speechless.”

While it would be easy to try to compare the two title teams, the Spartans preferred embracing the uniqueness of each while appreciating the

“I’m really proud of her and it’s really nice to win two with her and one with our other sister [Meghan] so we can all reminisce on it together,” said Maddie Haggerty, a Nebraska recruit.

After the win against LaSalle-Peru, St. Francis coach Peg Kopec took time to credit “unrecognized people” for their contributions, including senior setter Natalie Murison.

An Alabama commit, Murison will be a defensive specialist for the Crimson Tide and despite not setting for her club team or St. Francis last year, the senior never complained about taking on the new role for the Spartans this season.

“That’s a lot of pressure to come in and do something, somebody that touches the ball as much as a setter does,” Kopec said of Murison. “It’s kind of like the quarterback – you’re the goat or the hero if you’re not getting the ball to people. … I think she’s a little bit of an unsung hero here.”

Murison had 19 total assists during the state finals and finished the season with 403 assists along with 149 digs.

This reporter’s 14 minutes of fame opened with a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reference, which likely precludes me from 14 additional minutes down the line.

Slightly sunburned and seated in a Fifth Third Bank Ballpark suite, I’m on camera for a 14-minute documentary called “Sportswriter,” the thesis film of Columbia College graduate student R. Patrick Lile.

Disclosing the bygone bad habit of catching a “90210” rerun here or there during split shifts at my first newspaper job in downstate Lincoln, I’m recalling a fall 1996 episode that contends no one reads newspapers anymore.

“Here we are, 2013, and they’re still kicking,” comes the next breath.

There’s your 14 minutes in eight words.

Optimism swirls around “Sportswriter,” which came as no surprise.

Lile, 33, struck me as the upbeat type from the time he sent a random email proposing this project in March 2011. He Googled minor and independent league baseball teams around Chicago, settled on the Kane County Cougars and soon discovered I was relatively young and covering the team.

“A small-town sportswriter covering minor league baseball dreams of making it to the next level before it’s too late,” reads the summary in a program.

On Friday, more than 2½ years later – hey, Lile’s been jetsetting while working on other films, including the award-winning “The Interrupters” about violence prevention in Chicago – things came full circle.

Using the parallel of minor leaguers’ dreams of reaching the major leagues, the documentary is set mostly at the ballpark. Several clips of preps stories appear in a montage. There’s a cameo from Chronicle pho-

Make no mistake: Friday wasn’t Pee Wee Herman shuttling through a receiving line of buddies to watch James Brolin tackle the dramatized story of his life.

This was a Columbia College screening auditorium maybe half-filled with filmmakers, their families, film students and film, uh, subjects.

After the screenings, one of Lile’s crew members asked whether I cringed at the on-screen sound of my voice the way many nonactors on film do. The answer?

Not so much; I’m pretty well used to this baritone from transcribing interviews over the years.

In the same vein, nothing on camera especially inspired embarrassment or squirming, but maybe that was just me following Lile’s lead.

As the night started, Lile and two fellow graduate students addressed the audience about their projects and ambitions and everything that led them to this night.

“I can’t really remember not wanting to be a filmmaker,” Lile said at one point.

Substitute “filmmaker” and “sportswriter,” and the same goes for me.

The documentary leaves many avenues open when its running time expires, and that’s the intent. If my on-screen career isn’t one of them, these 14 minutes will do.

Four records were established at the Norris Center pool – two by the meet-winning Saints and two by team runner-up St. Charles North.

The Saints claimed their fourth straight sectional title with 319 points, 50.5 more than second-place North.

The record-breaking performances began right away, with North junior Abby Ponte scoring 423.3 in the 1-meter diving competition, eclipsing the previous mark of 386.7 set in 2000 by East’s Andrea Johnson. As a sectional champion, Ponte qualified for this weekend’s state meet at New Trier.

Another 13-year-old record fell in the second swimming event of the afternoon, the 200yard freestyle.

East senior Stephanie Garvin won the race in 1:51.06, more than a second faster than the 1:52.32 time set by the Saints’ Laura Lipskis in 2000, when it was still just St. Charles High.

“I really was not expecting it at all,” Garvin said. “I just really wanted to go get the state cut and maybe drop some time. … I couldn’t have done it without coach Joe [Cabel] and my other teammates because they really helped me this whole season.”

Also helping to push Garvin in the race was North Star sophomore Monica Guyett, whose second-place time of 1:52.82 qualified her for state.

“I felt good,” Guyett said. “I just wanted to qualify for state and make sure I had a good seed time for state. I think I did

pretty good on that.”

Third-place finisher Izzie Bindseil of East also qualified with a time of 1:53.76.

Garvin, Guyett, and Bindseil finished 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle, with all finishing under the state-qualifying standard.

Garvin won in 5:00.78.

“I thought it was another good race that I was not expecting, either,” Garvin said. “I’ve been really nervous this whole week about it and everyone’s been helping me get pumped up. I was just really excited to swim and that’s probably the main factor that race.”

“These kids were told from Day 1 that there’s a lot of things they couldn’t do,” Fighting Irish coach Ted O’Boyle said. “It just shows when you’re that age of kid in high school, if you put your mind to something and you believe in something, you can achieve something. And what we achieved this year, I think, is very special.”

SENECA – A handful of Aurora Christian football players turned their heads from Saturday’s postgame huddle after a public address announcement about a looming plaque presentation.

Turns out Seneca officials planned to salute the Fighting Irish either way, bestowing hardware moments after Eagles quarterback Austin Bray took the final knee on a 36-27 victory in a Class 3A quarterfinal.

The ceremony ended swiftly enough, but there was no less Seneca sentimentality when the Eagles dispersed from their own gathering shortly thereafter.

“They came out and that was one of the best efforts that we’ve ever played against,” Aurora Christian wide receiver Brandon Walgren said. “We really respect that team. They came out, and they

Beebe lumped “ugly” on this victory on the heels of four turnovers and six penalties. Strong play from defensive linemen Jack Burke and Jonah Walker stabilized things in the second half.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM The Chinese enameling called cloisonne has been made for centuries. A thin metal wire is bent into shape on a metal vase and soldered into place. Then colored enamels are floated in to fill each space and form the decoration. The word “cloison” is French for “fence” and is the source of the word cloisonne. But there also was another type of enamel-on-metal object made in China by the 17th century.

It is called “Peking enamel” or “Canton enamel.” A metal vase was covered with thick enamel, usually white, then fired.

Then an artist painted a scene or pattern with colored enamels, and the vase was fired again. These enameled metal pieces were usually made to resemble European designs and most were exported. The quality of the work deteriorated during the next few centuries and this type of enamel is rarely made today. Recognizing cloisonne and its thin metal lines is easy, but Peking enamels closely resemble porcelain. A 5-inch-high Peking enamel teapot that held a single cup of water for tea sold in 2012 for $660. It was painted with a Chinese landscape of clouds over a lake but the painting style was European. No doubt it was made for export to Europe or the United States. *** Q: My brother left me his “Brunswick Home Comfort Table” that dates from about 1908. It’s a combination billiards table and sofa. The tabletop folds over to form the back of the sofa, which has leather tufted upholstery on the seat and back. A metal label on the table says “Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co.” History and value?

A: John Moses Brunswick founded the J.M. Brunswick Manufacturing Co. in Cincinnati in 1845. After a couple of mergers, the company was renamed Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. in 1884.

Today the company, still in business, is named Brunswick Corp. It manufactures a variety of products, including billiards tables and bowling equipment. Your convertible sofa-billiards table was patented in 1910 by Jacob N. McIntire of New York. He assigned the patent to Brunswick, which made your unusual piece of furniture. It’s advertised in a 1911 Brunswick catalog as “a very popular design especially adapted for use in a den.” It sold then for $150 to $175. If yours is in excellent shape, it could sell today for close to $10,000. *** Q: I have two paddles my mother used to card the cotton she used in making quilts. I think she ordered them from Sears Roebuck in the early 1930s.

On the back each one reads, “The only Genuine Old Whittemore Patent No. 10, cotton, L.S. Watson & Co., Leicester, Mass.” What are they worth today?

A: Carding untangles wool or cotton fibres so they can be woven into cloth.

Amos Whittemore was granted a patent for a machine that made wool cards in 1797. Leicester, Mass., was a textile center in the 19th century. Several factories that made cards for textile machines, hand cards and wire for the cards were located there. L.S. Watson & Co. was the largest manufacturer of cards and also made heddle frames and shuttles. Watson was founded in 1842.

Q: I inherited six place settings of Normandie pattern Depression glass in iridescent marigold color. While I have always loved them and display them often, I seldom use them. What about using them for my everyday dishes? I have put several pieces through multiple cycles in the dishwasher with no obvious bad effects. I haven’t tested them in the microwave yet and would appreciate any thoughts you have on the safety of that.

I’m more concerned about health effects than damage to the luster.

A: Normandie was made from 1933 to 1940 by the Federal Glass Co. of Columbus, Ohio. The pattern was made in amber, pink and crystal, as well as Sunburst, which is the name of your iridescent color. Normandie was the only iridescent Depression glass made during the 1930s and is sometimes mistakenly listed as a Carnival glass pattern called “Bouquet & Lattice.” Iridescent glass is made by spraying a molded glass piece with metallic salts and then re-firing it.

Since the first microwave ovens weren’t common until the late 1960s, your dishes weren’t made to be “microwave safe.” The metallic salts in the iridescent glaze might cause “sparking” in a microwave oven, and that could damage the dishes or the microwave even if it doesn’t affect your health. Snails hatch from eggs as teeny, tiny snails. As they grow, the shell grows, too.

Snails don’t live just in gardens. They can also be found in ponds and even in the ocean. They are related to oysters, clams and even octopuses.

They are part of the group of animals with soft bodies known as mollusks.

A snail’s eyes are at the end of its long tentacles. The short tentacles are for smelling.

Snails slide along the flat part of their body, called the “foot.” Snails make a trail of silvery slime. This helps them to slide up walls and even crawl upside down.

‘Charlie Countryman’ is a lifeless romantic thriller

By AL ALEXANDER More Content Now Few actors are as fortunate as Shia LaBeouf. Despite having no charisma, presence or charm, he keeps winning roles, albeit in middling movies like his latest, “Charlie Countryman.”

I guess playing second banana to an erector set in the “Transformers” flicks and being Indiana Jones’ notso-whip-smart son will buy you some dubious clout, as long as the special effects are strong enough to surpass the blessed $200 million mark.

Unfortunately for LaBeouf, there are no special effects involved with “Charlie Countryman.”

In fact, there is nothing special about it at all. Just a lame mash-up of genres and ideas stolen from other movies and funneled into a lifeless romance between a Romanian damsel in distress and a scrawny, hirsute American who looks like he was yanked from the cast of “Ratatouille.”

What LaBeouf and Evan Rachel Wood lack in chemistry is diluted further by neither actor’s ability to emit a pulse. That is unless you count the “pulse” in repulsive, which “Charlie Countryman” tends to be while rocking out in a maddening series of quick cuts set to an ear-bursting electronica beat.

It unfolds in Bucharest, Romania, of all places, for no apparent reason beyond that it was confused for Budapest (a running joke throughout) and fits snuggly into writer Matt Drake’s stereotyping of Eastern Europeans as shady, ruthless characters who majored in cloak and dagger at university.

They all sound like Boris and Natasha, of course, despite the actors, including Mads Mikkelsen, Til Schweiger and Wood hailing from lands outside the old Soviet Bloc. And for comic relief, novice director Fredrik Bond inserts Harry Potter’s old sidekick Rupert Grint as a British tourist coming into contact with Superglue and bare-breasted women.

Drawing this rogues gallery together is LaBeouf’s Charlie Countryman, a Chicagoan who is first seen pulling the plug on his gravely ill mother (a wasted Melissa Leo), who moments later, conducts a sit-down with Charlie in the hospital hallway.

Yes, Charlie, like Haley Joel Osment, sees dead people. But he encounters them only when it’s conducive to the scatterbrained plot, like when dear ol’ Mom tells him to take his grief to Bucharest and unload by having an adventure. Sure enough, one arises when a chatty old man seated beside him on the plane drops dead.

Again, Charlie is left to converse with a corpse, this one telling him to watch over his beautiful young daughter, Gabi (Wood), in Bucharest. No easy chore, especially when Gabi’s ex is Mikkelsen’s soulless gangster, Nigel.

Let the Euro-trash clichés begin.

The script by Drake (“Project X”) ties itself into knots trying to figure out something interesting for all the

characters to do, leaving Bond to resort to musical montages (his forte as a music video director) and gratuitous cartoon violence to keep us entertained while Charlie and Gabi requisitely fall dangerously in love.

The problem is the thriller elements offer zero suspense and the romance is stuck on fizzle, largely because of LaBeouf’s utter lack of gravitas. He’s just a lump moving from scene to scene with zero presence. Wood fares only slightly better, but the script gives her nothing to do but wait on Charlie to keep coming to her rescue. No one, alas, comes to the rescue of “Charlie Countryman,” a romantic-thriller that shoots nothing but blanks.

Geriatric care managers can lighten caregiving load Dear Doctor K: Taking care of my elderly father, with his complicated medical care, has become more than I can handle. A friend suggested I hire a geriatric care manager. How can this person help?

Dear Reader: Caring for an elderly parent takes a lot of time, energy and patience, and it may also cause financial strain. But caregiving also can be wonderfully rewarding. Even if you do find it rewarding and don’t want to stop playing a major role in caring for your parent, you might still feel overwhelmed. If so, a geriatric care manager may be able to help.

Geriatric care managers are jacks-of-all-trades. Their training may include nursing, social work, counseling or gerontology. An experienced manager can round up medical care and necessary services, keep medical personnel on the same page and cut through baffling red tape. He or she can also help navigate family dynamics.

Some of the tasks geriatric care managers routinely undertake are: • Evaluating needs: Determining how independent your parent is in the activities of daily living, such as changing clothes, bathing, getting to the bathroom, making

Komaroff meals, and so forth; • Connecting people to helpful services, senior housing and longterm care facilities; • Bringing families together to discuss options supportively; • Hiring and monitoring homecare personnel; • Coordinating care between specialists, hospital and homecare staff, and family members; • Recognizing and finding ways to circumvent financial, medical or legal problems.

Working with a geriatric care manager can be costly but extremely helpful. In the long run, sometimes such expertise can save money and time.

Geriatric care managers usually charge by the hour. Rarely is the cost paid by long-term-care insurance; more commonly, the client or family pays. Be sure to get a written agreement outlining the scope of services offered and costs. This can also help you decide which tasks might be undertaken by family and friends to save money.

Dear Nameless: Never take a suicide threat as a joke. Talk to your friend about how much she has to live for. Research shows that talking to someone who harbors suicidal thoughts has a positive effect. Communication will help a troubled person unburden herself of tortured thoughts and stop feeling isolated.

It is also a good idea to discuss the situation with a school counselor or nurse – someone who can see to it that your friend receives the help she needs, if necessary.

This professional will contact your friend’s parents, who must be made aware of their daughter’s state of mind.

Above all, remain a good and trusting friend, one who will lend a listening ear and offer wise and constructive advice.
