Elburn residents continue to speak on Route 47 plans ELBURN – The potential Forest Preserve District of Kane County purchase of property at 1001 S. Main St. in Elburn continues to be debated at Elburn Village Board meetings, even when the topic is not on the meeting agenda.

At Monday night’s meeting, several residents spoke during the public comment portion of the Elburn meeting, urging village trustees to oppose the forest preserve district’s purchase of the 18-acre property – if forest preserve district officials were to seek it again as a home for a Natural Resources Department. The property is on Route 47, just south of Keslinger Road. Part of the property is in Elburn, and village trustees would need to approve the purchase.

“We say vote no if the forest preserve district comes back,” Petersen said.

She said there still is not enough information from the forest preserve district on its plans for the property and added that, unlike a business, potential forest preserve district needs, such as water and equipment, would cost money for taxpayers.

The location is one of three sites being considered by the forest preserve

district. Reached on Tuesday, Drew Frasz, a Kane County Board member, said the opponents might have a greater effect if they attended forest preserve district land acquisition meetings, calling that, “the most productive route.”

Kane County Board members also serve as forest preserve district commissioners.

The topic was not on Monday’s agenda in Elburn because forest preserve district officials have not yet indicated for a second time that they intend to buy the property.

“Really, it’s in the hands of the forest preserve,” Elburn Trustee Bill Grabarek said.

Frasz initially supported the forest preserve’s plan to buy the Route 47 location, but he since has become an advocate for a different location, which is south of Elburn.

Also, Frasz said there is the forest preserve district’s orig-

inal plan, which was to build on Silver Glen Road.

Residents who recently spoke mentioned a deeper issue – Elburn needs more businesses, and they said there would be a frustration if Elburn leaders allowed an organization exempt from taxes to locate at such a prime location.

“I don’t think people in this town have a feeling that you are really working to bring in commercial,” Pavlak said. “People want to see new businesses coming into town.”

Village President Dave Anderson said Elburn leaders are working to welcome in new businesses. Also, he said the forest preserve district isn’t the only party interested in the location.

ZBA hears appeal on process for alcohol, drug treatment center

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Attorneys sparred for nearly three hours Tuesday over what sections of the Kane County zoning ordinance should apply to a petition seeking a special use to allow an alcohol and drug abuse treatment facility for up to 120 people.

At issue was whether Mark VanKerkhoff, director of the Kane County Development and Community Services Department, was correct in allowing the petition from Maxxam Partners LLC to continue to hearing before the Zoning Board of Appeals.

The alcohol and drug treatment facility is not listed among the special uses in a farming zoning district. Instead, the appeal and resolutions assert VanKerkhoff bypassed the steps of approving Maxxam’s proposal and having approval of its staff.

In the alternative, Maxxam should have applied for a text amendment or rezoning of

the former boys school, Glenwood School for Boys, 41W400 Silver Glen Road, Campton Township, according to the objectors.

Abram and Jolene Andrzejewski of Campton Hills filed the appeal.

About 30 people attended the hearing at the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles, where the Andrzejewskis’ attorney, Kevin Carrera, asked the zoning board to overturn VanKerkhoff’s determination and direct him to follow that section of the ordinance.

“Their drug treatment land use is not listed anywhere in the Kane County zoning ordinance,” Carrera said. “It is not a permitted use, nor is it listed as a special use.”

But County Board attorney Patrick Kinally said the appeal is not well-founded and asked the ZBA to deny it.

“At the end of the day, our zoning ordinance is what it is,” Kinally said. “They don’t like the way we process these applications. That’s the way

we do it. We’ve always done it that way. We didn’t do anything different. Mark did not make a determination because that was not his authority to do.”

Campton Hills, Campton Township and Plato Township also passed resolutions stating VanKerkhoff did not follow the county’s zoning ordinance with regard to the Maxxam petition.

Under questioning by both Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Gaeke and Carrera, VanKerkhoff testified that he checks petitions for their completeness and payment of fees.

“Would it be your understanding this is a special use?”

Gaeke asked.

“That is what their application says, it’s for a special use,” VanKerkhoff replied.

After the testimony and closing arguments, shortly before 10 p.m., ZBA members went into closed session to consult with their attorney over an exhibit filed during the hearing.

School Board supports having synthetic turf design proposal

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia Public School District 101 Board on Tuesday supported having specific details on what having a synthetic turf field would look like at Batavia High School.

The board voted, 7-0, in favor of having Wight and Co., the district’s architect, develop a design plan and construction documents that would include a synthetic turf field at the high school.

The school board did not make an actual commitment to install a synthetic turf field.

Instead, board members supported a design plan so they could know exactly how much it would cost to install and maintain the field if enough funding was available.

A total of $56,000 in unused funds from the district’s operations and maintenance budget will be used to pay for the architect’s work, said Tony Inglese, the district’s chief financial officer.

Inglese on Tuesday spoke to the school board about the

high school athletic fields at the board’s regular monthly meeting. It was the first time in a year the board has talked about synthetic turf.

Batavia residents in 2014 soundly defeated a referendum to fund a series of district improvements, which included a turf field.

At the start of the meeting, Batavia sports boosters told the board they had $105,000 committed for field improvements and hoped to raise another $200,000.

Board member Chris Lowe was in support of a partnership with the boosters to continue to raise money for the field.

“I think the seven of us really need to get behind it now and make a decision so our community [can get behind] it,” board member Tina Bleakley said.

A synthetic turf field could be used by multiple sports teams and students throughout the day, said Batavia High School Athletic Director Dave Andrews.

The current Bulldog Stadium field at the school has limited use so it does not become heavily damaged, he said.

‘WHY CAN’T WE COME TO A COMPROMISE?’ Service agencies face uncertain future without state budget

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Local social service agencies Tuesday painted a dire picture of their ability to continue functioning as a result of cuts and the state’s budget impasse.

At a news conference held at the Association for Individual Development facility in Elgin, agencies that serve the homeless, people with mental illness, battered women, sexual abuse victims, elderly with dementia and those with developmental disabilities all described their challenge to continue to serve in the face of cuts and of not receiving funds they were promised.

Hosted by the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County, the conference will be broadcast on YouTube to highlight the agencies’ challenges.

Illinois did not have a budget in place by the July 1 start of the state fiscal year. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly remain deadlocked.

“People who are most affected currently are the most vulnerable,” said Jean Pierce of Geneva, vice president of the league. “The state ended funding for services that help 75,000 survivors of domestic violence in Illinois. Many people will have to choose

between staying in violent homes or becoming homeless.”

Pierce said investing in public services pays dividends. For each dollar spent on public services, the community gets back $1.36.

“It is irresponsible to cut from essential human services,” Pierce said. “Lawmakers, we call upon you to do a better job.”

Panelists who described the impact of their funding losses were Karen Beyer of The Ecker Center for Mental Health in Elgin; Lynn O’Shea of the Association for Individual Development, which serves adults with developmental disabilities and mental illness; and Michelle Meyer of Mutual Ground in Aurora, which serves survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, as well as provides prevention programs.

Another presenter was Michael Cobb of Hesed House in Aurora, which provides daily emergency shelter for 180 people throughout the year, but more than 200 people in the winter. Traci Dunne presented as a representative of Elderday Center in Batavia, which provides a day program for people with some form of dementia.

es that require medication, Beyer said. If the people they serve don’t get their medications to control their symptoms, they often lose their jobs and their homes, become homeless, and wind up in jail or in a hospital, Beyer said.

“The economics are clear,” Beyer said. “All of this is a lot cheaper and more effective than to treat them in places like hospitals and jails for their mental illness. I honestly can’t figure out why the [Rauner] administration took away 80 percent of our community mental health

funding for psychiatry this year. Psychiatry is our core service.”

Because of the state’s cuts and budget impasse, AID has suffered two major setbacks, O’Shea said.

“The first and most damaging is over $900,000 in state grants that were not even offered for renewal,” O’Shea said. “We are extremely concerned by the failure of our state government to provide supports for these very vulnerable individuals in our community.”

AID also provides psy-

chiatric care for uninsured clients who are on disability and working but still cannot afford to pay for insurance, O’Shea said.

O’Shea said her agency has had nine years without an increase in the hourly state payment for services for mental health, and eight years for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. O’Shea estimated the erosion of support is about 30 percent, when adjusting for inflation.

Kane County to take ‘next logical step’ with Settler’s Hill GENEVA – Plans to turn Settler’s Hill into a cross-country course are progressing, but Kane County officials said the community shouldn’t expect construction on the former landfill for at least another year.

The Kane County Development Committee on Tuesday supported a $180,000 contract with Weaver Consultants Group to complete the next

phases of engineering. Phase 2 will provide more detailed preliminary design plans and landfill permitting requirements, while Phase 3 will provide final engineering plans.

Ken Anderson, director of the county’s division of environmental and water resources, said the work could take nine to 12 months because it requires consultation with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, described it as the

“next logical step to take.”

Committee Chairman Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts, said the county has a “much stronger” plan now after a market and feasibility study identified weaknesses.

Hunden Strategic Partners, which conducted the study, shared details of its analysis in June. It projected the cross-country course would operate with a deficit in its first decade.

The Chicago Area Track and Field Organizing Com-

mittee has since expressed interest about managing the cross-country course. On Tuesday, officials shared financial projections for the first 10 years; the facility would be in the black by year five.

“I’m excited about what the planning and studies have indicated,” County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said, describing the proposed course as top-notch. “I really applaud the work that’s going on here.”

He noted the elevation of Settler’s Hill will enable spectators to better see the runners during races, whereas other cross-country courses take participants into the woods.

“You don’t see the character being built,” Lauzen said of runners at other sites.

The County Board is expected to act on the contract Dec. 8. From there, Anderson said, the board could next consider the management/operational component.

Cobb said Hesed House has had to turn away an average of 50 homeless prevention clients each week, with a loss of $75,000 for homeless prevention services.

“The 400 people we serve a day – it’s their lives that are being chipped away,” Cobb said.

Dunne said 40 percent, or eight, of the clients with some form of dementia in the Elderday program are state clients.

“We are not in a position to carry the state’s debt, so unfortunately, we had to create a wait list for state-funded clients,” Dunne said. “We created a large reserve to draw upon [for] increasing therapeutic programs for clients, but we had to draw on that for the state’s debt.”

Dunne said the need for programs, such as Elderday, is only going to increase as the population ages, and support also is provided to caregivers. Elderday’s programs keep clients out of nursing homes by more than 14 months and also slow their cognitive decline through therapeutic programming, Dunne said.

The providers say when-

ever they talk to state lawmakers, they are told to talk either to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan or Rauner to end the impasse.

“The Democratic majority’s failure to pass a balanced budget continues to impact many services across Illinois and Kane County,” according to an emailed statement from Rauner’s office. “Governor Rauner has repeatedly tried to compromise on reforms to free up resources to help the most vulnerable and balance the budget. Unfortunately, those efforts continue to be blocked by the supermajority in the General Assembly.”

Madigan’s press secretary Steve Brown countered that, saying if the governor had used his line-item veto authority on appropriation bills instead of vetoing them, “all this disruption could have been avoided.”

“The Legislature passed a series of appropriation bills [with] more spending here than revenue, [and they were] willing to work it out.

The governor said ‘no.’ He signed the K-12 bill and vetoed everything else. All this anguish and disruption now is simply … Bruce Rauner failing to use the constitutional authority he has to reduce the line-item appropriation bills. End of story, ” Brown said.

Among solutions brought up Tuesday to add more revenue for the state were a salestax increase on haircuts, pet grooming, lawn care and a tax on retirement income for those earning more than $50,000 a year.

As a result, AID has had to cut staff, benefits, programs and initiatives, as well as freeze salaries. It also is not replacing staff who leave, O’Shea said.

“Why can’t we come to a compromise … at how Illinois can fund vital human services and still provide for our most vulnerable without this political controversy in Springfield?” O’Shea said.

Mutual Ground operates on a $1.9 million budget with 36 percent coming from the state, equating to $56,000 a month, Meyer said. Its payroll is $55,000 every two weeks, she said. The agency does prevention programs in 70 area schools about good touch, bad touch, healthy relationships, sexual harassment and abuse, Meyer said.

“In our intervention program, we have a 28-bed shelter, we have two crisis lines we run 24/7, we provide support for victims in area emergency rooms – four of them – and courthouses – three of them – and ongoing services … for domestic violence and sexual assault victims,” Meyer said.

“Everything that we do is free to victims. ... It is not free for us to provide this service,” Meyer added. “I frankly don’t know what is going to happen to us after the first of the year. We have cut almost everything we can cut.

How to put career development on your to-do list As the to-do list season kicks off this month with holiday preparations and festivities, it’s no wonder a less celebratory emotion tends to surface for many this time of year – anxiety.

In spite of fun and memorable times with family and friends, the seasonal increase in social activity and sharing of life statuses can amplify the pressure to at least appear to have one’s personal and professional life in order. But the weight of an employment situation doesn’t have to factor into holiday-related stress.

• Subscribe to news feeds and blogs on the topic of “job search success.” You can start by setting up a Google alert and scanning the results for valuable or new insights each week.

career transition services to community members on topics that include exploring career options; resume and cover letter writing; the importance of networking; and improving job search techniques.

Doing just one of these things each week will help you put the focus of holiday dinner conversation on what you’re doing to achieve your goals, rather than stirring up frustrations about where you are now.

Each week the contestants who receive the lowest number of votes will be eliminated from the show.

Ribbon-cutting for Anderson Road overpass to be next month in Elburn

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Motorists will have a new way to get around Elburn next month.

The Anderson Road overpass between Keslinger Road and Route 38 is set to open Dec. 7 after a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting, Steve Coffinbarger of the Kane County Division of Transportation told County Board members in committee Tuesday.

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony, which is expected to feature elected

officials from the county and village, he said.

Attendees should park in the west lot of John Stewart Elementary School, 817 Prairie Valley St., Elburn. The ribbon-cutting will be at Anderson Road and Prairie Valley Street.

In addition to getting an update about Anderson Road, the Transportation Committee supported a set of ordinances and one resolution tied to the project.

The items, which will be considered at the Dec. 8 County Board meeting, designate

the road as County Highway No. 85; set the speed limit at 45 mph; and establish it as a Class II truck route.

The completion of the project comes about two years after its groundbreaking.

The project extended Anderson Road, which stopped at the intersection with Prairie Valley Street, to the south.

With the new bridge, drivers will have an alternative way to cross the train tracks, which intersect with Route 47, causing delays for motorists. A study showed 105 trains a day pass through the

village.

“This highly anticipated overpass of the busy UPWest Line Railroad tracks on the east side of the village of Elburn will enhance public safety and emergency response, and increase access for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to the Metra station,” according to an invitation for the ribbon-cutting.

“It will help ease congestion, provide connectivity and will improve the quality of life, health and wellness of nearby residents and business owners.”

He is survived by his wife Virginia. Four Children, Kenneth (Jennie)Kern, Kathryn Boyd, Karyl (Michael) Reese, and Donna Marie Kern. Seven grandchildren, Sixteen great grandchildren. Also a brother, Peter (Linda) Kern.

He was preceded in death besides his parents, a sister, Mary Lou Korkhouse.

More red states open doors to Obamacare

By JONATHAN BERNSTEIN Bloomberg View We had more significant hints last week that the Medicaid expansion under Obamacare will eventually be universal.

First, Democrat John Bel Edwards appears to be the solid favorite to defeat Republican David Vitter in a special election for governor of Louisiana on Nov. 21. Edwards favors the Medicaid expansion.

Second, incoming Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, a tea party stalwart who ran against Obamacare, is talking about negotiating a deal with the federal government over changing Medicaid expansion, rather than simply ending it.

And a surprising one: Alabama, with a solidly Republican state government, is reportedly reconsidering its opposition to the expansion.

None of these results are certain yet. But they follow the general pattern. States with Democrats in charge accept the program.

States with Republicans in charge have mixed records of adopting it. But once a state goes along with Medicaid expansion, it doesn’t go back on it, even if a strongly conservative Republican is elected governor.

That means Medicaid expansion remains a one-way street, and eventually all 50 states will accept it. We’re already up to 30 states, with Montana’s recent agreement to sign up.

Medicaid expansion is crucial to the aim of the Affordable Care Act: to ensure that everyone in the U.S. has medical coverage. The resisting states are the main reason that goal has not been reached yet.

Of course, battles over Medicaid won’t end even when the last state signs on. Expect to see plenty of fights, at both national and state levels, about any number of issues – how the program is administered, how generous the benefits are, how doctors and hospitals are treated.

States may negotiate for waivers to run the program as they see fit as long as certain standards are maintained, and that leaves plenty of room for variation. This is where Kentucky is probably headed, and perhaps Alabama as well.

So, it sure looks as if every state is going to join, one way or another, at some point. And that’s a big victory for Obamacare.

The League of Women Voters’ film makes the case that a responsible budget is one that contains no cuts to vital services because our elected officials can choose revenue instead.

While state officials claim to want to promote a business-friendly atmosphere, many businesses that hold state contracts are finding themselves without payment. The agencies that contract with the state not only provide services, but are also small businesses. The loss of revenue to the state in the form of income taxes and economic activity when jobs are reduced or cut adds to the economic crisis the state finds itself in.

The impact of the budget impasse goes beyond the cuts to state-funded services such as education, human services, health and public safety. It also affects private industry.

According to economist Mark Zandi of Moodys.com, every $1 invested in public services has a return of $1.36 to state economy aid. When funding is cut, the local economy loses.

The League implores state leaders to pass a budget that includes sufficient revenue and no additional cuts to vital services. This needs to be done now, not when it works into a political timetable.

It’s time to get down to the work of governing. We’re counting on the governor, legislative leaders and the Illinois General Assembly to show what civics in action means. If they cannot exemplify the very basics of governing, what are they teaching our children?

East rebounded from an opening game loss to the North Stars almost as casually to earn four of five possi-

ble points. One point each is awarded for single-game victories, while winning an overall series nets two more points.

Saints senior Cole Cartee paced the team with a 667 series, while juniors Owen Schmid (659) and Dean Mudlong (625) followed.

Schmid rolled the individual high with a 253 in his second game.

“This is just a big part of the process,” said Mudlong, a team captain. “Just keep closing frames, closing frames

until we get to our end goal, which is state. It’s part of a process. We’re doing well.

We’re on track right now. We want to follow through and see it at the end.”

East finished third among 12 teams at last season’s state meet and graduated three of its top four scorers, including Mudlong’s brother, Aaron, who now competes at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., west of St. Louis.

Patriots erase early deficit, win

The lack of scoring from other Saints on the floor wasn’t as much a concern for Drumtra as the team’s failure to control the ball and its lack of rebounding.

“I’m not too worried (about additional scorers),” Drumtra said. “The offense will come. I am more concerned with the turnovers and giving them second and third looks at the basket.”

Drumtra felt it was adrenaline more than nerves that got to the young Saints.

“We came out and opened

up with a 12-5 lead,” Drumtra said, “but then we scored just four points in the second quarter.”

The Saints trailed by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, but rallied to close the third and continued that push early in the fourth quarter. Munroe’s three-pointer with five minutes to play cut the Stevenson lead to 38-28, but the Saints could never get the deficit down to single digits the rest of the way.

Ashley Richardson led the Patriots with 16 points, including three 3-pointers.

“I thought the intensity was there,” Rosenfeldt said of the Saints’ effort. “I thought it was a good start for the first game. We will practice

(Wednesday) and work on getting better.”

The Saints will face another tough test Thursday when they square off against Evanston.

“That’s another quality program,” Drumtra said. “We will learn quickly about our team.”

Drumtra said the strong competition in the Schaumburg tournament will help prepare the Saints for Upstate Eight Conference River Division play, which opens right after the tourney’s conclusion.

“We have been coming here forever,” Drumtra said of the Schaumburg tournament.

“Even when we have struggled here, it has helped us get ready for conference.”

“It looks like it’ll be a pretty successful season,” North Stars coach Jason Svehla said. “We’ve got a lot of potential. We’ve just got to get more consistent.”

North freshman Blake Miller could attest. Despite leading the North Stars with a 666 series – 75 pins clear of sophomore Joey Rayner – Miller pondered a handful of lost opportunities after closing with a 194. He opened with games of 235 and 237.

Miller admitted he “got a little bit too tight toward the end” before ultimately conceding he had a “pretty good” day.

There’s no question bowling keeps him going. Miller said he bowled a 299 game during a recreational Sunday session at St. Charles Bowl, North’s home lanes.

“Every time we do a good shot – and even if we do a bad shot – we’re always there for each other and we’re always staying positive,” Middendorf said. “The whole team. … That’s what we do every single time. One person could be down, and then we have our whole team surrounding them and saying, ‘Hey, just keep it going.’ “ Bowling Green also hosted co-tenant Geneva’s UEC dual against Streamwood on Tuesday, providing plenty of bustle before adult league bowlers shuffled in.

Huskies clash with Western Michigan in must-win MAC West battle terceptions and a fumble recovery.

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In the regular season finale in 2014, the Northern Illinois football team needed a win over Western Michigan to keep its hopes alive for the Mid-American Conference West crown.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

With two games left on the regular season schedule, the Huskies and Broncos – both 5-1 in the MAC West – clash at 7 p.m. Wednesday in DeKalb in a game that keeps the winner in control of their own destiny to get to the conference championship.

“We’re in the same situation as we were last year,” sophomore cornerback Shawun Lurry said on Friday. “We know we’re going against good, talented receivers. So we just have to practice hard this week and come out and play.”

The two teams come in as a pair of the most dynamic offenses in the MAC. The Broncos (6-4 overall, 5-1 in MAC West) are second in the conference with 36.9 points per game, while the Huskies (7-3 overall, 5-1 in MAC West) average 36.7.

Northern Illinois edged out Western Michigan, 31-21, scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half for the Huskies’ sixth consecutive win over the Broncos.

Part of the reason for the Broncos’ high-scoring offense this season has been the play of their two talented junior wide receivers Daniel Braverman (90 receptions, 1,062 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Corey Davis (69-991-8).

Meanwhile, the Huskies are second in the nation with 17 interceptions as a team, including eight from Lurry, who is tied for the most in the country.

“It’s just the right play calls,” Lurry said. “We all play together as a team. We don’t get mad at each other every time someone messes up. Keep your head up and you’ll do good on the next play. When we do that, we get turnovers.”

Toledo all sit atop the MAC West standings with one loss – with the Huskies’ win over the Rockets giving them the tie-breaker.

The Broncos have made a living off controlling the game in the second and third quarters. They are outscoring teams 224-140 in that span – compared with 145-140 in the first and fourth quarters.

They also convert nearly half of their third-down attempts (48 percent), compared with 41.3 percent by Northern Illinois.

“Situational football is where it’s all at,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said.

“When you talk about being really good on third down, when an offense is really good on third down, they’re usually really good on first.

So you flip that on its ear to talk about defense, and you want to be good on first down.

You want to get them into second and long. Then you have a better chance getting them into third and medium or third and long.”

The highly anticipated game also marks the first home start for freshman quarterback Ryan Graham, who took over when junior Drew Hare suffered a season-ending injury at Toledo. Graham has been efficient in the two wins, going 24 for 36 with 322 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

“Your offense is only what

your quarterback can do,” Carey said of calling plays to the strengths of Graham.

“We’re not married to anything here, offensively. We’re only married to whatever we can effectively do that puts points on the board.”

A closer look at today’s game: Players to Watch

Zach Terrell, senior, quarterback – After being second team all-MAC last season, Terrell has put together another strong year. With his two threats on the outside in Braverman and Davis, he is averaging 265 passing yards per game, completing 68.5 percent of his passes with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions – three of which have been tipped.

Jarvion Franklin, sophomore, running back – Franklin’s numbers have dropped this season and he’s currently second on the team in rushing – 663 yards and five touchdowns – behind freshman Jamauri Bogan (764 yards, 11 touchdowns). However, last season he became the first player to win the MAC Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, so he is capable of making big plays for the Broncos.

Vollbrecht commits to SDSU basketball Geneva senior center Loudon Vollbrecht left for Brookings, S.D. on Saturday with an inkling in the face of a trying recent stretch.

He returned home Tuesday with his faith restored, as well as a verbal commitment to the South Dakota State men’s basketball team.

Vollbrecht, a 6-foot-8, 290-pounder with strong interior scoring and rebounding skills, especially appreciated the way the NCAA Division I Jackrabbits maintained interest after Vollbrecht suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on the final play of the Vikings’ football season this month.

South Dakota State coach Scott Nagy, in his 21st season with the program, was undeterred.

Nagy and his staff still saw plenty of upside in Vollbrecht, a player they have courted since the spring.

“I found he was one of the most honest coaches I’ve ever met,” Vollbrecht said. “Him being there 21 years made me feel very secure in what I’m going to be doing there for the next four or five years.”

Vollbrecht averaged 10.8 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds for the Vikings in 2014-15, providing a force in the paint as the team finished fourth in the Class 4A state tournament.

A burly offensive tackle during football season, Vollbrecht took “multiple unofficial” visits to various campuses for basketball and football and mulled a few other offers, including one from the Illinois football team.

The Brookings campus simply “felt like somewhere where I could really provide what I needed to in order to be the best basketball player I can at the next level,” Vollbrecht said.

Vollbrecht credited conversations with Geneva football

coach and basketball assistant Rob Wicinski, a former tight end at Northern Illinois, for informing his decision about the grind of college football.

Vollbrecht later found an ally in a former foe.

Recent St. Charles East graduate Cole Gentry, a Jackrabbits guard, helped show Vollbrecht around campus this weekend.

“His positive feedback plus what I already had in mind, it was a great thing all over,” Vollbrecht said.

Vollbrecht said doctors told him the timetable for his return to “full go” basketball action was 6-8 months. Vollbrecht optimistically forecast the earlier end, putting him in line to participate in the Jackrabbits’ summer workouts.

Geneva boys bowling wins WEST CHICAGO – The Geneva boys bowling team defeated Streamwood, 3,008 to 2,557 on Tuesday, earning all five points in an Upstate Eight Conference dual.

“It was a nice way to start with the clean sweep,” Vikings co-captain Mike Wilkins said.

“We won all three games and got the max points.”

the previous day. Sleep would be a good time for doing that.

Studying electrical signals given off by the brain (brain waves) and signals by our muscles has allowed us to know that there are two major types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) or dreaming sleep, and non-REM or quiet sleep.

During the night, you move between different sleep stages in a fairly predictable pattern, alternating between REM and non-REM sleep.

During REM sleep, your eyes dart back and forth behind closed lids.

Your body temperature rises. Your blood pressure increases.

Your heart rate and breathing speed up to daytime levels. And yet your body hardly moves, except for intermittent twitches.

During deepest sleep, which is non-REM sleep, hormones are released that stimulate repair and growth in your organs. And your immune system becomes primed to defend itself against infection.

Recent research has discovered that the “plumbing system” of the brain flushes wastes out of the brain during sleep. In tomorrow’s column I’ll talk about that in detail.

So, it must be obvious that I haven’t really answered your question.

I don’t know exactly why we sleep.

Nor, as far as I know, does anyone else. But it clearly is important for the health of our brain and our body.

Dr. Wallace: Megan and I have been very best friends ever since first grade, and now we’re both in the 11th grade. This past year and a half has been really hard for Megan. She has had quite a few unhappy experiences that have caused her to be really depressed. It all started when her parents got a divorce and her father moved out of the house.

Then Megan’s boyfriend got into trouble with the law and his mother sent him to live with his dad in Georgia.

Then the worst – Megan’s dad was killed in an automobile accident six months ago. She told me then that she felt like ending her own life, but I didn’t take it seriously.

A couple of months after that Megan took an overdose of sleeping pills, but did not die from it. Now my mother told me I should stop being her friend because she might influence me to attempt suicide.

I told my mom that would be impossible because I have a wonderful and happy life.

Since Megan’s suicide attempt, we have been even closer friends and I seriously believe that I have helped her overcome some of her depression. She has begun to smile and laugh again, and I definitely do not want to

What can I do to convince my mom that I care about my friend Megan, but that she could never convince me to give up my life? Teens who copy others’ suicides already are vulnerable, and if someone does end their life, it was their own decision, 100 percent.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a senior in high school and want to attend a university when I graduate next June. My problem is that I want to attend UCLA, which is one of the better schools on the West Coast. However, my parents want me to live at home for two years and attend a community college to save on expenses.

I don’t like the idea of going to a community college for two years of inferior education and then transferring. My parents are not millionaires, but we’re not poor either. What do

munity colleges. The courses at these schools are diverse and challenging, and the instructors are excellent. Believe me, two years at a community college will not mean any sacrifice in the quality of your education. You’ll be well prepared when you transfer to UCLA in 2018.

Dr. Wallace: I applaud the letter you printed from Kate, telling of some of her research on teen drinking and driving.

I would like to take her warnings one step further and warn about another very deadly situation that many people never give a second thought to: falling asleep at the wheel, which causes many accidents.

Teenagers lead very busy lives and tend to burn the candle at both ends. Getting enough rest can be just as important to being a good driver as not drinking and driving. Both situations could be deadly. – Panzy, Louisville,

sleeps, but why is that?

What does sleep do for us?

Dear Reader: I get this question a lot, and we’ve talked about it before in this column. There is some new information that is interesting.

The honest answer is that we don’t know why it is we sleep. We spend about one-third of our lives doing it, so nature must have a reason for it. But it’s hard to ask nature questions – or, at least, to get an answer.

One possible reason for sleep is obvious: Our muscles may need the rest. However, the heart is a muscle, and it doesn’t rest while we sleep, thank goodness.

And like our heart, many of our other organs, such as the liver and kidneys, keep working.

Maybe our brains need rest? It makes sense, but I doubt it’s the reason. That’s because brain wave studies show that the brain is active while we sleep.

Sigmund Freud thought that we needed to sleep in order to dream. He thought we needed to dream in order to deal with hidden conflicts, desires, fears and other psychological issues. Today, many psychiatrists doubt that we need to dream for those reasons.

In the past 10 years, scientists here at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere have published a great deal of evidence that dreaming (and, hence, sleeping) is important in memory and learning.

That makes sense to me. You’d think we’d need some time, without distractions, to sort through and to organize the new information that entered our brains

I hope these bridge columns trap you into analyzing each deal. In today’s, there is more than one winning line, but there also is a trap to avoid.

South is in four spades. West leads his fourth-highest heart. What should declarer do?

North might raise one spade to two spades, but I much prefer one no-trump, especially with only three low spades. South then bids what he thinks he can make.

Note West’s opening lead. In general, do not look for a ruff if it will cost a natural trump trick.

It would be easy to win the first trick, draw two rounds of trumps, and go down. South would probably next unblock his diamond ace and play a club to dummy’s queen, but East would take the trick and return a heart. West would win and cash his spade queen before leading another heart. Unable to reach the dummy, declarer would also would lose a club to go down one.

It is all right to draw one round of trumps, but after cashing the diamond ace (not vital), South must not immediately lead a club. If he does, it can go club ace, club ruff, heart to the queen, club ruff. Instead, South should lead a heart himself to break the communication line of the defenders. Then he eventually will be able to ruff his fourth club in the dummy.

However, there is another possibility that appeals to me: Declarer does not win the first trick.
