Ex-Batavia teacher says he will run for Batavia school board Dryden warned students last year they had the 5th Amendment right not to incriminate themselves

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden has announced plans to run for the Batavia School District 101 Board next year.

“There is no connection between the school board and the teachers themselves,” Dryden, who taught for Batavia School District 101 for 21 years, said Monday in a phone interview.

“Teachers are afraid every day for their jobs. What I want to create is a much more collaborative model.”

There are three seats open on the Batavia School Board in April’s consolidation election. The terms of board President Cathy Dremel, along with the terms of board members Gregg Hodge and Melanie Impastato, will expire next year.

Dryden said he recently posted a letter to his students on his Facebook page about the actions leading up to his retirement.

“I needed some closure,” Dryden said, explaining why he wrote the letter. Dryden said that he John Dryden received a call from the district on what he thought was going to be his last day that he could not come back to the high school.

“I was facing a disciplinary action from a parent who complained about a lesson I gave on the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” Dryden said. “The next thing I knew, I’m facing a three-day

unpaid suspension for teaching an unauthorized lesson.”

Dryden said the district told him he would have to use only school board-approved sources in the future. But he said the school board’s only approved sources are textbooks.

“What I understood was that you would not be allowed to take on meaningful material while I was in the classroom,” Dryden wrote in the letter.

In a statement issued Monday, Batavia School District 101 did not specifically address Dryden’s allegations.

“Mr. Dryden’s retirement was completely voluntary and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the BPS101 Board of Education and the Batavia Education Association,” the statement read.

The school board voted in May 2013 to issue a written warning of improper conduct to Dryden for his actions regarding the in-class survey.

Before the board issued the notice, then-Batavia Superintendent Jack Barshinger docked Dryden a day’s pay.

Jon Gaspar was the sole board member to vote “no.”

The notice warned Dryden not to provide legal advice to students, among other things.

Barshinger had said that students can’t incriminate themselves.

“The information is protected by the Illinois and federal student records act,” Barshinger said at the time.

“We won’t give it to law enforcement. That was never the intent.”

Barshinger had said students’ names were put on the surveys to help identify those students who need help. All high school students were given a 34-question survey during their third-block classes designed to evaluate their social-emotional perceptions.

Aldermen reduce Shodeen’s Residents critical of industrial park land cash requirements review process GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously approved reduced land cash requirements for a Shodeen redevelopment project, despite pointed remarks from a park district official about the importance of open space acquisition.

Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte spoke to the council Monday. Last week, a Geneva District 304 representative asked aldermen not to recommend a reduction in the land cash requirement.

“Those sorts of parks, open space and land conservation opportunities are not available to us without this important ordinance in place,” Lambillotte said. “The land cash ordi-

nance ... gives the park district the opportunity to acquire a lot of open space.”

Lambillotte said the park district also relies on referendums and grants for open space.

Lambillotte said open space has economic benefits, contributing to increased property values by 20 percent, healthier lifestyles by people being more active outdoors and cleaner air and water in general.

At Committee of the Whole last week, aldermen unanimously voted to approve the application for a reduction in fees from Shodeen for the redevelopment of the northeast corner of James and Seventh streets as six new townhouses.

Shodeen’s land cash requirement to the park district

was reduced to $18,231.75 instead of $25,274.20, and to the Geneva District 304, it was reduced to $1,276.74 instead of $8,119.54.

City Planner David Degroot said land cash requirements follow a formula, but alderman can decide to grant relief, as was requested by the developer.

David Patzelt, representing Shodeen, said the developer had provided for open space in a 1994 development when the county did not have a requirement, and more recently, donated a swimming pool to the park district.

Without asking the aldermen to change their vote, Lambillotte said she wanted to speak about the need of the park district to acquire and preserve open space.

St. Charles plans ‘Chair-ity Event’

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Downtown Partnership on Monday shared its plans for a promotion involving Adirondack chairs.

The “Chair-ity Event” is an outdoor, public art exhibition that would be located in downtown St. Charles during summer 2015, said Lynne Schwartz, the partnership’s executive director.

“The main goal for the event is to draw people downtown,” Schwartz said Monday to the Government Operations Committee during its regular meeting.

Any resident, group or business can opt to participate and decorate an Adirondack chair for public display.

The finished chairs will make their debut on Memorial Day weekend during the

St. Charles Fine Art Festival, which is a Downtown Partnership event.

The participants can then choose to donate the chair through an online auction when the promotion ends during Labor Day weekend, Schwartz said.

The event can create a buzz for St. Charles using public art the same way Cows on Parade did for Chicago in 1999,

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said.

“What a nice piece to the downtown area,” Rogina said.

Schwartz on Monday showed a map with some proposed sites in downtown St. Charles to display the chairs.

She plans to return to the St. Charles City Council in February with the final proposed placements so promotion of the event can begin.

“You put a lot of residents through a lot of anguish,” Keep Batavia Neighborhoods spokeswoman Joyce Keane said, in addressing aldermen.

Keane said the city made many flaws in evaluating The Missner Group’s previous application. That application is now considered closed because The Missner Group had missed a deadline to submit plans to the city for its proposed industrial park.

Skokie-based The Missner Group had proposed to build two large industrial buildings on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke urged Keane and the other members of Keep

Batavia Neighborhoods to continue to stay involved.

“I’m of the opinion that this piece of property will be before us again with a new development proposal,” Schielke said. “I would encourage your involvement and input when these proposals come forth.”

Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown said he would like Community Development Director Scott Buening to review the process involved in the industrial park project and report back to aldermen on his findings.

“Let’s work together,” he said. “Let’s work on fixing the flaws.”

“She was acting ornery and grumpy,” said Shanahan, a Geneva resident.

Shanahan happened to be participating in a Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes walk in Winfield with a friend, whose young son had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 4.

When she heard the symptoms leading up to his diagnosis, Shanahan realized her daughter also had them.

“I could not sleep that whole night,” Shanahan said.

“We got her tested the next day. Her blood glucose was in the 500s when it should have been 100.”

Kate, now 8, has an insulin pump and watches her intake of carbohydrates and high-fat foods, her mother said.

“We are much better about it now,” Shanahan said. “We know a bag of Goldfish is 19 carbs.”

November is American Diabetes Awareness Month, promoted by the American Diabetes Association, which lobbies for a cure and also raises awareness.

Diabetes is a chronic disease caused when blood sugar or glucose levels are above normal, and insulin – a hormone secreted by the pancreas – cannot help get glucose into the cells so the body can use it for energy.

This causes sugar to build up in the blood. Diabetes left undiagnosed or untreated can lead to kidney failure, blindness, heart attacks, strokes and amputations, according to the American Diabetes Association website.

“I teach seventh grade at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove,” Shanahan said. “Fifteen years ago, I had a boy in my class with diabetes, and I was scared ... because I knew nothing about it. ... Now I’ve learned so much. Knowledge is power.”

••• There are two kinds of diabetes. There is Type 1 – which people get as children or teens. That represents about 5 percent of the 29.1 million Americans who have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. It means

the body no longer produces insulin, and it must be injected.

Type 2 diabetes is adult onset, considered an epidemic as it is tied to the increase in obesity in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease and Control The treatment can be with medication or injections of insulin, but it also is seen as preventable with diet and lifestyle changes.

Dr. Sarah Kimber, a retired family doctor who volunteers at the TriCity Health Partnership in St. Charles, sees patients with diabetes. The clinic serves patients without insurance.

While Type 1 is generally considered incurable – patients manage their disease – Type 2 sometimes can be prevented or turned around

with diet, exercise and losing weight, Kimber said.

“It can be done, but not a lot of people can do it,” Kimber said.

People with a new diagnosis of diabetes follow up with a certified diabetes educator, such as Dawn Turner at Cadence Health at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

“It’s a comprehensive diabetes self-management training program,” Turner said.

Advice on food choices would mean educating patients about choosing whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein sources and low-fat dairy and portion control.

Turner said all kinds of emotions come with a new diagnosis.

“Some are crying,” Turner said. “But [diabetes] is con-

“I had no symptoms that I was aware of, just how awful I felt,” Armstrong said. “My mom – also a Type 2 diabetic – was taking her sugar and said, ‘Let me prick your finger.’ It was 420. ... She said, ‘You get yourself in to the doctor.’ ” Armstrong said the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in her family is related to weight and inactivity. Armstrong, who is married to Kane County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong, said she eventually chose gastric bypass surgery in 2010 to get her diabetes under control.

“They could fix my stomach, but they could not fix my brain,” Armstrong said. “I still eat candy bars, things I should not have. ... It is a struggle.”

But for Armstrong’s goddaughter, Katie Swenson, 15, a freshman at St. Charles East High School, managing her Type 1 diabetes is just something she does. Swenson was diagnosed at age 8.

“You have to take the time to check your glucose and take care of yourself,” Swenson said.

The disease has not slowed Swenson. She is president of her freshman class for student council, plays trumpet in band and jazz band and takes all honors classes.

She also participates in the annual Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes. In the past four years, her team has raised more than $15,000 to find a cure, she said.

“I hope it happens within my lifetime,” Swenson said.

Harvest Lane Vintage opens shop in Campton Hills

“We’re so happy with the location,” Tina Mastrangelo said of her store’s new digs in Campton Hills. “It’s such a great location.”

The end of a lease prompted her to move Harvest Lane Vintage from a building near the intersection of Routes 64 and 47 to a suite at 40W160 Campton Crossings Drive, she said.

Although the shop’s new site is comparable in size to it original location, Mastrangelo said it offers such features as high ceilings, windows in the

front and back, natural light and foot traffic from neighboring businesses, including China Garden.

Harvest Lane Vintage sells household and decorating items, as well as designer-quality clothing that isn’t necessarily vintage, Mastrangelo said.

She said a vendor also creates

handmade jewelry using vintage pieces.

Because of the nature of the inventory, Mastrangelo said many of the items can’t be replicated.

Harvest Lane Vintage offers two sales a month, Mastrangelo said, noting the first sale in the new location was held in Octo-

Fall is here, and this time of year gets mixed reviews from most. I personally love the change in seasons and enjoy that fall is the calm before the busy holiday season and planning for the New Year.

Geneva man sent to prison for child porn, sexual assault KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A 23-year-old Geneva man is being sent to prison for recording himself in the act of sexually assaulting a child he knew, according to a news release Robert R. from the Kane Schamne County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Circuit Judge John Barsanti sentenced Robert R. Schamne on Friday to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections – eight years for a child pornography conviction and six years for a criminal sexual assault conviction.

Schamne pleaded guilty to the charges – a Class X felony and a Class 1 felony, respectively – in September.

According to the release, evidence presented in court indicated that Schamne videotaped an act of sexual penetration between himself and

the victim – who was younger than 18 – between Nov. 18, 2012, and April 3, 2013. He also committed a separate act of criminal sexual assault during that period, according to the release.

Under Illinois law, the release states, Schamne must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence for criminal sexual assault, and he is eligible for day-for-day sentencing on the child pornography sentence.

Schamne will receive credit for 594 days served in the Kane County Jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $300,000 bail, according to the release.

Additionally, Schamne must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act. The case was prosecuted

by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Whitfield, who is assigned to the Kane County Child Advocacy Center. The case was investigated by the advocacy center and by the Geneva Police Department.

POLICE REPORTS Campton Hills • A gray plastic mailbox in the 7N800 block of Cloverfield Circle, Campton Hills, was reported damaged Monday, Nov. 10, by a thrown pumpkin. Damage was estimated at $35.

• A mailbox in the 41W000 block of Bridle Creek Drive, Campton Hills, was reported damaged Sunday, Nov. 9, by a thrown pumpkin.

Damage was estimated at $200 to $300.

Rickie touched everyone he met.

Bob was a 1943 graduate of Fenger High School in Chicago. He later served in the Army Air Force with the 14th Air Force in the CBI Theater from 1944 to 1946.

He and Loretta later moved to Aurora, Illinois in 1957. Loretta passed away in 1982. Bob married Eleanor Caughlin on September 17, 1983, in Chicago, Illinois.

Bob worked in the automobile business as an office manager and retired in 1990. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed golfing and all levels of football and baseball.

Unitarian society to show wage documentary Friday

GENEVA – Kane County is preparing to harness power from the sun.

After months of discussions about powering county facilities with solar panels, the Energy and Environmental Committee last week directed staff to identify two buildings for a pilot program.

From there, a request for proposals will be drafted, and the projects will go out to bid.

Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, has been a proponent for the project and spent his last county meeting as a board member fighting for it. His term ends this month, as he did not seek re-election.

He initially preferred that the county start such a program at a large facility, such as the Kane County Judicial Center, but said he would be

OK with starting with a smaller building, such as Animal Control.

“I’d rather see the county do something rather than nothing,” Donahue said.

Thursday, the committee heard from two companies – WCP Solar and Convergence Energy – about two potential financing structures for solar power. WCP Solar presented a leasing program while Convergence Energy offered a power purchase agreement model.

Donahue said the county should draft the RFP in a way that permits bidders to propose whatever financing structure they think will win their business. At the same time, he said, it should include certain parameters so the committee can easily compare the proposals.

The committee will evaluate those parameters next

Multiple car crashes reported during weekend snowfall

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The first significant snowfall of the season fell Saturday night, and with it came reports of multiple crashes in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland area.

Three adults were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva after a crash involving a pickup truck and car at Route 64 and Wooley Road in Lily Lake, said Lt. Sheri Nielsen of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District. Fire crews were dispatched to the crash at 10:24 p.m. Saturday, Nielsen said.

The patients did not appear to have life-threatening injuries at the time of the crash, Nielsen said.

There were about 16 weather-related vehicle incidents Saturday in areas of Kane County sheriff’s jurisdiction, but nothing major or unexpected, wrote Undersheriff Pat Gengler, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, in an

email.

“I don’t [have] the specifics about the accidents but I know [Geneva] had 10 for the entire 24 hours of Saturday,” Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email.

Batavia police responded to two non-injury crashes on Saturday night within a few minutes of each other, according to the department’s dispatch records. The first crash occurred at 7:50 p.m. at Kirk Road and Pine Street, and the second crash occurred on the 500 block of South Batavia Avenue at 7:53 p.m.

Anytime there is inclement weather in the area, traffic-related incidents rise, Gengler wrote.

“We really stress to people that in the cities the conditions may be OK, but once you get out west where the wind is not blocked and there are so many roads, the conditions will be much worse,” Gengler wrote.

extra time to break and avoid any unnecessary travel, if possible. In addition to slower driving, Nielsen said motorists should always wear their seatbelts and make sure their tires are inflated to the proper size before driving in winter weather.

The National Weather Service calls for freezing temperatures Tuesday with a high near 19, a low near 13 and wind chill values as low as -10 and a 40 percent chance of snow after midnight.

A total of 1,768 trucks statewide will be available for deployment by the Illinois Department of Transportation crews to keep about 16,000 miles of state routes clear and passable, according to a news release from the department.

In 2013, the department spent $131.4 million on snow removal and spread almost 800,000 tons of salt statewide.

This year, the department will have access to more than 1 million tons of salt if needed, the release states.

With names such as Tomte’s Workshop, Jule Hus and Dala’s Deals, each of the featured cottages offered a variety of Scandinavian Christmas crafts for sale Saturday, as throngs of visitors came to the fifth annual Cottages in the Woods event.

Art and Cindy Rodriguez of Sugar Grove were among the many in attendance, bundled up against the brisk cold.

“We really enjoy going,” Cindy Rodriguez said. “The little cabins are really interesting – and to see the different characters of the cabins and

And it’s a great way to start off the Christmas season.”

Art Rodriguez said he enjoyed seeing the different Scandinavian countries represented in the cottages’ designs and craft work.

“I just like the uniqueness of each cottage,” Art Rodriguez said. “And the gifts available to buy there for Christmas – it’s a good time. I encourage anybody to go there.”

Mary Marquis of Geneva was at the cottage named Dala’s Deals, looking at various items for sale.

“I’ve lived here for years

and always wondered what the cottages were like,” Marquis said.

Sandy Braun of Schaumburg, who owns one of the cottages dubbed Tomte’s Workshop, does her own Swedish folk art painting called dalamaling, all on display for the weekend event.

Braun said the designs painted on the wooden doors of chiffarobe includes a kurbit – a gourd – taken from the Book of Jonah, when God makes a large gourd to grow and give shade to Jonah to protect him from the sun.

Braun said the colorful chiffarobe on display was rescued from the curb, thrown out as garbage. A chiffarobe is a freestanding cabinet with drawers on one side and a place to hang clothes on the other.

“The kurbit is a symbol of God’s protection,” Braun said.

Thumb sucking can affect teeth development SPONSORED BY

By Stephanie Kohl Although it is not uncommon for an infant to suck their thumb or use a pacifier, prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use can affect how a child’s teeth develop.

“The longer a child sucks on their thumb, as the teeth start to erupt, they won’t develop normally,” said Batavia dentist Ronald Murphy.

Prolonged use can result in an open bite, meaning there is a space between the upper and lower front teeth where they may not touch because a thumb or pacifier is usually there.

Murphy said this can lead to braces down the road and a more difficult time with braces at that. The patient may have to wear braces longer and have more frequent adjustments.

Baby teeth usually fully erupt by age 2, so Murphy advised that once all of a child’s teeth come in, parents should discourage or eliminate the

use of pacifiers and thumb sucking.

“Any tooth, as they erupt, once they touch something that’s there most of the time, they stop moving,” Murphy said.

In normal tooth eruption, the top teeth will meet the bottom teeth and stop moving. However, in the event of prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use, the teeth will instead stop moving when it hits the thumb or pacifier, resulting in a gap.

Murphy advised that since children oftentimes use their thumb or a pacifier to selfsoothe, parents allow children to gradually cut back.

“Children are people, too, and they don’t like to be told what to do,” Murphy said.

“It’s a lot easier if you can get them on board.”

CAMPTON HILLS – Village President Patsy Smith last week asked the Illinois attorney general’s public access counselor for a binding opinion on whether some village trustees violated the Open Meetings Act, which is something they deny.

In an email sent Thursday to state Public Access Counselor Sarah Pratt, Smith wrote that trustees Laura Andersen, Al Lenkaitis Jr., Harry Blecker and Sue George took action outside of a public meeting and sent a letter of acceptance to a firm under consideration to become special legislative counsel to the trustees.

Natalie Bauer, communications director at the Illinois Attorney General’s office, confirmed via an email Monday that the office had received a request for review but had no further comment.

Smith’s email included a Nov. 10 email from Andersen to trustee Jim Kopec in which Andersen writes that the trustees have sent an acceptance letter to a firm. Andersen on Saturday wrote in an email to Smith that no letter was sent to a firm.

“We decided to wait until we move at a meeting for hiring the firm,” Andersen wrote.

“So unfortunately, the email that Jim forwarded to you was incorrect and you have reacted to misinformation.”

Andersen, in a different email on Nov. 10 to Smith, Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen and Village Attorney William Braithwaite, request-

ed that an agenda item be added to today’s meeting that includes discussion and a motion to approve retaining Ancel Glink as independent legislative counsel to assist the trustees on legislative matters.

In her Saturday email, Andersen wrote that she protests that Smith is impeding the trustees’ right to legislative process by refusing to add the agenda item to today’s meeting.

Smith wrote in a Nov. 14 email to Andersen, Johnsen and Braithwaite that she wouldn’t move forward with the agenda request until she received the opinion from the public access counselor, whose office does not immediately specify when an opinion might be issued.

“Rather than impeding your right to the legislative process; I consider my actions necessary to assure the legislative process and state statues are being upheld,” Smith wrote in another email sent Sunday to Andersen.

Andersen is part of a committee that was formed during an Aug. 12 special meeting to publish an RFQ for special legislative counsel candidates.

The other committee members include Lenkaitis Jr. and Johnsen.

Like Andersen, Lenkaitis Jr. said the trustees followed Open Meetings Act procedure.

“You can see there’s been a bunch of arguments and disagreements,” Lenkaitis Jr. said Friday in a phone interview. “We have great local representation, it’s all just an internal strife is what’s going on.”

Middle-class income stagnation a threat to nation’s health THE WASHINGTON POST Many a pundit accused the 2014 midterm election of being a “Seinfeld election” – that is, an election “about nothing.”

Certainly it lacked one clearly dominant issue, in the way that, say, the 2006 midterm was a referendum on President George W. Bush’s policy in Iraq. But if the just-completed campaign had no theme, it did have a context: People went to the polls – or, in massive numbers, stayed home – amid the increasingly widespread realization that despite the U.S. economy’s gradual recovery from the “Great Recession,” middle-class family incomes still are not growing very much.

In fact, average income for the bottom 90 percent of households has barely grown at all, in real terms, over the last four decades, according to Labor Department data. In 1973, the bottom 90 percent got 68 percent of national income; in 2013, 52 percent.

The economy grew, thanks to higher productivity, but the top decile captured a disproportionate share.

If you believe that democracy’s social foundation is a strong middle class, this trend is worrisome not only for its human cost but also for the threat it poses to U.S. political health. William Galston of the Brookings Institution has described this breakdown of the postwar “liberal democratic bargain” – support for moderate poli-

ticians in return for steadily growing, widely shared prosperity – and identified it as “the one issue that more than any other will define our country’s prospects.”

And so our first point is that the just-completed election would have been much more about “something” if both parties had addressed this trend far more directly.

Our second point, though, is that honest political dialogue, as opposed to populistic rhetoric, begins by acknowledging how difficult it will be to reverse middle-class income stagnation. It is, after all, a trend that afflicts all industrialized democracies. In fact, the United States is doing better now than either Europe or Japan; our healing labor market is producing jobs at a

clip that soon should lead to more rapid wage growth.

Yet the recovery affects only the cyclical aspect of middle-class income stagnation, not the far more powerful structural aspect.

President Barack Obama’s top economic adviser, Jason Furman, noted in a Nov. 5 speech that three factors determine middle-class income: economic growth, income distribution and labor-force participation, all of which operated less favorably for middle-income Americans after 1973 than before it.

Furman’s most alarming data point was the decline in labor force participation by prime-age workers – those between 25 and 54 years of age – especially men. Only 88 percent of prime-age men are

in the labor force, down from 95 percent in 1973.

Perhaps the golden age of robust, widely shared middle-class earnings between 1948 and 1973 was somewhat anomalous, bound to end once competitors in Europe, Japan and, later, China began to challenge U.S. economic primacy.

Nothing in the last four decades refutes the basic case for flexible, innovative, American-style capitalism or points to a better alternative; to the contrary. Even so, government and the private sector must find new ways to manage that model – to stimulate growth, equitable distribution and work effort – because if the system doesn’t work for the middle class, it really isn’t working at all.

To the Editor: Recently, I was shopping in Geneva. And when I left the Berry House, I sat down on a bench to rest.

Well, I left my wallet, by accident, on the bench and went back to DeKalb not knowing that my wallet was still in Geneva. As soon as I was back home, I received a phone call from Officer Davis asking, “Are you missing something?”

Wow – he called to say that an honest person had given the wallet to the police, and nothing was missing. My life would have been ruined with all the information inside of it.

So, I want to say thank you to the person who was so honest and to Officer Davis. What a refreshing thing to have happened.

Several Cary-Grove fans howled at Saturday’s pregame announcement publicizing the burst pipes in the outdoor restroom facilities at Al Bohrer Field.

Turns out the Trojans’ basic navy and white uniforms and triple-option offense provide only a peek into the program’s penchant for old-school football. Cheering adverse effects of the elements registers several notches above.

For much of a frigid afternoon, Geneva responded to Cary-Grove’s physicality in a 7A quarterfinal. The Vikings scored the first points on the Trojans’ starting defense since Week 6 and by halftime were within six points of a team that still hasn’t trailed in 2014.

An eventual 44-26 loss ended Geneva’s season. It didn’t sap the Vikings’ spirits.

“I thought everybody played a [heck] of a season,” senior defensive back Sean Chambers said. “We had something special out here, and it’s a bummer we couldn’t finish it off.”

Geneva reached the program’s first quarterfinal since 2008, when the Vikings finished as 7A runners-up. Entering this fall, the program was just 2-4 in the postseason since, but an improved defense and big-play offense sparked a 2014 turnaround.

Warmed by postgame handshakes, hugs and on-the-spot reflections, 16th-year Vikings coach Rob Wicinski wasn’t shy to lump a superlative on his latest batch of Vikings.

“I enjoyed probably this run better than any of the other ones,” Wicinski said. “I was too stupid to know any better years ago. So now I’m appreciating a little bit more. I didn’t realize it’s been six years since we’ve been this far. That’s kind of depressing. But, you know, you just don’t see the

Bulldogs sputter in opener

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com RIVER FOREST – The Batavia girls basketball team lost its season opener against Proviso East, 57-39, on Monday night in the opening game of the Trinity Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over 26 times in the defeat, wasting a strong start from junior forward Hannah Frazier, whose 20 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one block were all team highs.

“I thought we had a lot of jitters,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “When we didn’t make nice reads we kind of threw out or airmailed a couple of passes or skipped a couple in there. When we did get off a couple layups a couple rimmed out. But just a lot of jitters to start up.”

The Bulldogs trailed 23-11 after the opening quarter and the Pirates increased the lead to 31-16 at the half.

Early in the third, Batavia cut the deficit to 34-27 after junior guard Bethany Orman hit a 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on the momentum and trailed 3929 heading to the fourth quarter.

Frazier added 11 of her 20 points in the second half, and attributed it to adjustments her team made at Jensen’s recommendation at the half to use her size advantage to its advantage.

“I think a lot of it was thanks to my teammates,” Frazier said. “We noticed that the defense they were running made it easy for me to get open looks. [Jensen] did a good job of pointing that out and the team was really looking for me a lot more, so that was helpful.”

Going to the free throw line often in the fourth quarter and making 5-of-8 attempts, the Pirates were able to increase the lead to the final margin.

Conversely, Batavia strug-

gled from the charity stripe throughout the game, going 5 for 13 from the line on the night.

The two teams met last year in a win for the Bulldogs, but with a young team featuring just one senior for the 2014-2015 season, player expectations and roles have changed.

“It’s a lot of the same faces as last year but every single one of them has a slightly new role,” Jensen said. “Nobody has an identical role to last year. It’s going to take a little bit of time to just ease into that, ease into those roles and responsibilities this year.”

Starting the season against Proviso East, ranked No. 22 in the state to open the year, will better prepare the Bulldogs to succeed down the road, said sophomore guard Morgan Erickson.

“I think it really makes us see our competition and know that we can get better when we play stronger teams. I think

we know that we’re going to face hard teams and we need to get better and better as the season goes on.”

With tournament play resuming for Batavia on Wednesday, Jensen said playing a tough schedule at the beginning of the season was by design.

“The way we’ve tried to build our schedule the last two years is to play this. We’re going to play them, Christ the King and Trinity and I’m willing to bet that it’s hard to match those three in the opening week.

“Everything that we’re doing is for a later date, come the end of our conference play, towards our postseason, so we don’t face a game that’s a new speed for us.”

“By the end of the year we’re not going to say oh well we ran into something we haven’t seen before. That’s kind of our goal with trying to dive into these games starting tonight.”

They’re really rowdy.

CARY – Geneva football players shuffled through Saturday’s postgame handshake line with faces varied with tears, scowls and expressionless gazes.

If you looked hard enough, an occasional Viking bordered on converting to a more optimistic look.

Naturally, there were no smiles after Geneva’s 44-26, season-ending loss to unbeaten Cary-Grove in a Class 7A quarterfinal, but perhaps more than any other group that greeted the Trojans immediately after a defeat, this one sensed relative accomplishment.

Cary-Grove (12-0), which still hasn’t trailed this season, led by just six points at halftime after the Vikings (10-2) counterpunched out of a disastrous start. The outcome remained in doubt into the fourth quarter, and Geneva at least could wear the distinction of being the Trojans’ toughest foe to date.

“I’m just really proud of what our boys did today,” Vikings right guard T.K. Hood said. “We beat them down. We did what no other team has been able to do to them this year, and we put their backs against the wall. We had it. It was close. It just didn’t get to us. But I’m ... proud of what our guys did. Getting down on them. Hitting hard. They bullied us a little bit, but … we came back and kept composure, kept our heads.”

Celebration back on for Francis Three-peat in the books for 3A title

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com NORMAL – St. Francis girls volleyball coach Peg Kopec was musing about “Mix it up at lunch day” at St. Francis, in which students are encouraged to sit at different lunch tables than usual to interact with new people.

She spoke in the context of a different postseason path that allowed the Spartans to meet Joliet Catholic in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state championship match rather than in sectional play, but the cafeteria imagery is versatile for the Spartans’ volleyball program, which continues to take everyone’s lunch money throughout the state.

The Spartans powered past the Angels, 25-18, 25-23, to win their third straight 3A state championship and 11th state title under Kopec.

Spartans senior Sarah Muisenga said she had no question St. Francis would finish the job when she walked into Redbird Arena on Saturday.

“No. I could feel it,” said Muisenga, who supplied consecutive kills to open the second set. “Everyone was just so pumped and excited.”

Junior outside hitter Molly Haggerty, the Spartans’ most intimidating player, came to the team’s rescue when the second set tightened late. Haggerty drilled kills to put the Spartans ahead, 24-22, and then to close out the championship after the Angels inched within 24-23.

Haggerty considers each year of the Spartans’ threeyear reign distinctly delightful.

“Last year obviously was really special playing with my sister and winning with Maddie,” said Haggerty, who eventually will follow Maddie Haggerty to play collegiately at Nebraska.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Rookwood pottery, made in Cincinnati since 1880, is perhaps the most popular American art pottery among collectors. The company not only made artist-decorated vases, molded bookends, art-deco figurines and commercial wares, but it also used marks that tell a collector exactly what it is.

Until 1886 the mark was the year in numerals and the name Rookwood. In 1886 a new mark was chosen - a backward capital letter “R” leaning against a capital letter “P.” A flame was added to a circle around the top of the mark each year until 1900. After that, a Roman numeral for the last two digits of the year was put under the mark. So 1904 was a flame mark with IV at the bottom. The company went out of business in 1967, but was later bought and sold several times. In 2011 the business was bought by Martin and Marilyn Wade, Cincinnati real estate developers. Today Rookwood uses a new mark - the flame mark with the year in Roman numerals. So 2014 would be marked MMXIV. Other letter marks represent the color and type of clay, numbers 1 to 7301 tell the shape, and initials tell the name of the artist.All of these codes can be found in books or websites about Rookwood. It helps to know this history, but a collector should judge a piece of Rookwood by the quality of the glaze and the skill of the decorator, and then add extra value for condition, size, age, the fame of the decorator, and how much you like the piece. Humler & Nolan, an auction gallery in Cincinnati, sold a 14-inchhigh vase with early Limoges-style decoration that was probably made by the founder of the pottery, Maria Longworth Nichols. It’s marked “Rookwood 1883.” Although it was chipped and restored, the quality of the decoration, large size and artist attribution attracted a bid of $5,290.

Dear Reader: Chemotherapy uses drugs that kill cancerous cells, but only injure healthy cells.

To understand chemotherapy, you need to understand what cancer is.

Our body contains 13 trillion cells. They all started from one cell, a cell that kept dividing.

One cell became two, two became four, and so on. But the cells kept dividing in a carefully controlled manner. Early in our lives (even before we were born), they had to keep dividing so that we would grow larger. After we are fully formed adults, some cells need to divide to replace dying old cells with younger ones.

In contrast, cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Chemotherapy (anti-cancer) drugs kill cancer cells or prevent them from growing and dividing.

The drugs reach almost all parts of the body. This helps to kill cancer cells that have spread from the original site of the cancer.

Chemotherapy is the core treatment for some cancers. For other cancers, it is part of a larger strategy along with radiation

Chemotherapy drugs can be given in a hospital, clinic, doctor’s office or at home. For most people, a bag filled with the liquid drug is attached to a tube that is inserted into a vein. The drug slowly drips into the patient’s body.

Sometimes the patient is able to swallow a pill instead, or get chemotherapy through an injection.

People can receive chemotherapy daily, weekly or monthly.

Unfortunately, in addition to attacking cancer cells, chemotherapy drugs also injure normal, healthy cells. This can cause many side effects.

Many anti-cancer drugs, for example, affect the production of blood cells. This includes red blood cells that carry oxygen and platelets that help blood clot.

Chemotherapy also inhibits the production of white blood cells that fight infection. That’s why a common side effect of chemotherapy is increased susceptibility to serious infections.

Other common side effects include fatigue, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, hair loss and rashes.

In recent years, medical scientists have developed new treatments. Some target the chemical changes in cancerous cells that cause them to grow uncontrollably. Others harness the body’s immune system to attack cancerous cells. For certain types of cancers, these new approaches appear more effective, and less toxic, than chemotherapy.

Dear Hannah’s Parents:

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace I was crushed, but I couldn’t do anything about it. I had a large nose and there was no way I could hide it. It was there for all to see and some to ridicule.

Ironically, I did enjoy school. I graduated with honors and because of my singing ability, was voted as the most talented senior in my graduation class. By the 12th grade the cruel remarks were absent, but they were replaced with cute and clever phrases about the extraordinary length of my nose.

After graduation, I wanted my nose shortened and went to a doctor to find out about the procedure and the cost.

I was surprised that the cost was less than I had anticipated. My grandmother said she would lend me the money, so I took her up on her generosity and got a “nose job” (rhinoplasty).

After the recuperation period, I had turned from an ugly, dateless duckling into a very attractive swan.

I am now 32, married to a wonderful, handsome husband and have two beautiful daughters. My self-esteem is sky high.

Fortunately, my daughters do not have large noses. But if they had been born with noses that were abnormally long, they would have undergone rhinoplasty at the earliest possible age.

Skid Simon’s classic book, “Why You Lose at Bridge,” first appeared in 1945. Now, 69 years later, Julian Pottage has taken Simon’s characters and written another book, “Why You Still Lose at Bridge” (Master Point Press).

Chapter 11, “Failing to Count,” is a primary factor that separates good players from bad. In this example deal, South is in two spades. West leads the heart ace, then shifts to the diamond six.

How should South proceed?

In the auction, South’s decision to compete with two spades on a soft 4-3-3-3 hand with only a queen and three jacks (no aces or kings) was highly debatable.

In normal circumstances, South would play dummy’s low diamond, hoping West had just led from the king. But here the bidding makes that impossible. West passed over his partner’s opening bid, but has already produced the heart ace; he cannot also have the diamond king.

South should rise with dummy’s ace, conveniently dropping East’s king. Then declarer can draw trumps and lead clubs twice through East (who must also have the top honors in that suit) to restrict his losers to three hearts and two clubs.

Unexpectedly, in a worthwhile book, the author fails to point out that if West continues hearts at trick two, East can win with his queen and cash the king, on which West can discard a club.

Then three rounds of clubs, the last ruffed by West, defeat the contract.

Surely East would have encouraged a heart continuation by signaling with his heart nine at trick one.
