Sunday storms do little damage to Tri-Cities

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com The storms that prompted the National Weather Service to issue various advisories Sunday – including a tornado watch – did little damage in and near the Tri-Cities, officials said.

With the exception of scattered power outages reported in Geneva, fire departments serving Batavia, Elburn, Geneva, St. Charles and Sugar Grove had nothing major to report after storms cleared early Sunday afternoon.

iff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Pat Gengler said in an email that none of the damage – a few downed power lines and some trees across the road – was unexpected.

ComEd posted an update on its website at 12:45 p.m. Sunday that said an estimated 210,000 customers were affected by the storm, and about 35,000 were at that time out of service.

“We currently have crews working diligently to restore service to the customers affected,” the utility company said on its website.

By 2 p.m. Sunday, the tornado watch – which had been originally in effect until 4 p.m. – had been removed from the National Weather Service’s advisory list for Kane County.

There were, however, reports of tornadoes in other locations throughout the state, including a large tornado that touched down near Peoria, according to the National Weather Service.

“There could be a period in the mid to late afternoon with gusts up to 55 mph,” the advisory stated.

“Wind speeds should ease later this evening.”

nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Debbie Notaro added layers of greenery to a fiberglass pot Saturday, she told a crowd of about 50 people that making decorative holiday planters should be fun, playful, organic and traditional.

Notaro, owner of My Secret Garden, offered tips on using fresh greenery, such as spruce tops, noble fir boughs and gold lace juniper, during the holiday season at a seminar held at Wasco Nursery and Garden Center in St. Charles. She showed the versatility of filling a planter with various plants to decorate a home or business, and she said such planters could last as long as March.

“I like to put things in that are not necessarily Christmas,” she said. “As winter goes on, you can change it up.”

After laying many branches of evergreens and other plants into a large container, she demonstrated how to change the look throughout the season.

Some of the elements she added included bows, pine cones, colored twine shaped into a ball, large decorative candy canes, artificial fruits, birch logs and hearts made of wire.

“You can keep changing the design for very little money,” she said.

Notaro advised workshop attendees to weigh down light containers using bricks so they wouldn’t blow over. She said she also waters the planter once the decorations are complete, as the water tends to freeze in the winter and helps keep the greens from fading into a rusty color. She said to also avoid brushing off any snow that might accumulate, as that helps keep the container moist.

Kim Schroeder, a buyer and sales representative for Wasco Nursery and Garden Center, said workshops such as Saturday’s are held almost every month. She said Notaro’s focus Saturday was using

all live materials to spruce up various items many people have around their homes, such as outdoor benches, bird houses, bird feeders, bird baths and mailboxes.

She said other workshops throughout the year include working with native plants and perennials, and pruning techniques.

She noted that the nursery is open all year round, except for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. “If you want help designing installations for the spring, the best thing is to come early,” she said.

GENEVA – As storms swept through the area Sunday morning, those at Good Templar Park in Geneva predicted the severe weather wouldn’t be good for the Cottages in the Woods Scandinavian Holiday Craft Sale.

Still, the participating cottages remained open to those willing to expose themselves to the elements, and organizers worked to prepare a hot lunch for visitors.

“The place was so packed yesterday we could not move,” said Jody Moreen, who was part of the event.

“We could hardly keep up.”

More than 300 people attended the event Saturday,

Moreen said, using the $5 admission fee for ages 12 and older as a way to estimate the attendance.

Now in its fifth year, the holiday craft show not only acts as a fundraiser for the park but is also an opportunity for the public to tour about a dozen cottages in Good Templar Park, 628 Eastside Drive.

“It’s a chance for us to open our park to our neighbors,” cottage owner Linda Schweikhofer said.

Fellow cottage owner Jan Freidinger said she is proud of her ability to preserve the structure, which was once owned by her grandmother.

Except for the layout, she said, much has remained the same throughout the years.

The Bulldogs then only needed one first down, which came on an Anthony Scaccia third-down run, to kill the clock. Scaccia rushed 31 times for 132 yards and scored both of Batavia’s first-half touchdowns, an 11-yard TD run and a 14-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Micah Coffey.

Batavia led, 12-7, at halftime, then went ahead 19-7 with 8:55 left in the third quarter after a 54-yard TD strike from Coffey to speedster Rourke Mullins.

“I motioned across, corner came out on me and Micah broke the pocket,” Mullins said. “The cornerback flew up on Micah, and I was able to keep on running. Micah saw me and was able to get it right to me.”

Coffey also connected on a 55-yard, deep-ball completion to receiver Jordan Zwart in

the first quarter to set up Scaccia’s TD run.

“The linemen gave us so much time, those are actually like the third read Micah has,” Piron said, referring to the two long receptions. “The delay didn’t pop open, and Micah had time to look, look, boom, there’s his kids that he knows. There’s his buddy, Rourke, and there’s his buddy, Zwart. Those kids make plays all season long. They’re playmakers.”

Coffey threw for 225 yards but also tossed two interceptions and lost a fumble. One of the interceptions was a giant momentum-swinger, as Lake Forest junior Andrew Nelson returned a sideline-route pass 90 yards for a touchdown that temporarily stunned the Bulldog Stadium crowd and put Lake Forest on top, 7-6, after the PAT in the final minute of the first quarter.

Defense was reputed to be the strength for the Scouts, who did not allow more than 21 points to any opponent all season.

“They were good,” Coffey said. “They prepared really well for the stuff that we had.

We had a few wrinkles, and they were able to do pretty well against them. So a lot of credit to those guys. They’ve got a lot of great players on that team.”

BATAVIA – Seldom does a football team leading by two scores with 5 minutes to play fake a punt, but these weren’t ordinary conditions, and Batavia is no ordinary team.

The maneuver didn’t work out as Batavia coach Dennis Piron hoped, but the Bulldogs’ defense stepped forward with a decisive stop late as the Bulldogs held on for a 19-14 win against Lake Forest in Saturday afternoon’s IHSA Class 6A state quarterfinal.

The Bulldogs (11-1) advance to a state semifinal next weekend at top-seeded and undefeated Rockford Boylan, which rallied past Prairie Ridge on Saturday in Rockford.

Batavia was near midfield, ahead 19-7, when – rather than punting into a substantial wind on fourth-and-3 – the Bulldogs called a fake. Punter Tucker Knox’s pass overshot a wide-open Anthony Thielk, who appeared to stumble on his route.

“We’d been planning it all week,” Knox said. “We had it. They blitzed everyone. I overthrew it a little bit and he cramped up right as he started to run, so it’s tough, but I guess we didn’t need it.”

Explaining the call during a postgame interview on the field, Piron, referring to the wind, asked “You feeling this?”

“In practice [against the wind], we’d only been netting 20 [yards],” Piron said. “So we figured 20 max, net, and if we throw it and get [a first down], maybe the game is over. … It just didn’t seem to be that big of a gamble. We didn’t hit it.”

The Scouts (9-3) capitalized on the favorable field position, needing less than a minute of game time to score off a 1-yard Trent Williams touchdown run with 3:52 to play in the fourth quarter. The extra point cut Batavia’s lead to 19-14.

The Bulldogs’ offense then went three-and-out, necessitating the dreaded punt into the wind. Knox managed a solid boot, giving Lake Forest possession at the Scouts’ 48-yard line with 2:57 to play.

St. Francis repeats at Class 3A state champions

By MEGHAN MONTEMURRO mmontemurro@shawmedia.com NORMAL – St. Francis left no doubt as to which was the superior girls volleyball team during Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state final match.

The Spartans tried to observe all the milestones over the course of the season, which culminated Saturday with a celebration they had been playing toward all year.

St. Francis convincingly handled LaSalle-Peru for its second consecutive Class 3A title with a 25-19, 25-7 win.

The state title is St. Francis’ 10th overall in program history, making coach Peg Kopec the most championship-rich coach in state history. With Saturday’s state title victory, Kopec passed former Mother McAuley coach Nancy (Wich-

gers) Pedersen for the most state titles.

“It’s pretty special, a nice achievement for this team,” Kopec said. “I think they had a lot of pressure on them throughout the season. We tried to take some off, but it’s pretty difficult. They’re very talented and people expected them to be here.”

The Spartans (39-3) had to fend off a feisty Cavs (354) squad, which battled back from an 8-3 deficit in Game 1. LaSalle-Peru tied the game four different times but St. Francis never trailed. Clinging to an 18-17 lead, St. Francis traded kills with L-P to maintain its lead. The Cavs, however, couldn’t pull any closer, committing three straight unforced errors. Two kills by sophomore outside hitter Molly Haggerty sealed

the opening game win.

Haggerty and junior middle hitter Mary Boken were a dangerous combination and one that the Cavs struggled to stop. The duo each had seven kills to lead St. Francis.

“I think going out we didn’t know how they were going to play against us so in the second game we adjusted to how they were going to play and we focused on what we needed to do to play against them and give up as least points as possible,” Haggerty said.

“And I think we did that.”

The Spartans didn’t let the Cavs have an opportunity to force a third game, with a dominating performance in Game 2. St. Francis effortlessly built a 17-5 lead as setters Danielle Messa (11 assists) and Natalie Murison (nine assists) spread the ball among

the attackers. Twelve unforced errors only compounded the Cavs’ problems.

“It was feeling like a normal game for most of the game and then afterwards it really hit me,” Boken said of winning a second consecutive state title. “It wasn’t just winning that game that hits you.

The whole season, all the accomplishments you had, your whole volleyball career – as a little girl you dream of winning a state championship.”

Despite yet another state title, Kopec said it’s difficult to compare this year’s team to her previous state title winners.

“Every year is a different team,” Kopec said. “Different talent, different problems, a different set of circumstances so this is team 13 and this is their year. They’re all great.”

Four records were established at the Norris Center pool – two by the meet-winning Saints and two by team runner-up St. Charles North.

The Saints claimed their fourth straight sectional title with 319 points, 50.5 more than second-place North.

The record-breaking performances began right away, with North junior Abby Ponte scoring 423.3 in the 1-meter diving competition, eclipsing the previous mark of 386.7 set in 2000 by East’s Andrea Johnson. As a sectional champion, Ponte qualified for this weekend’s state meet at New Trier.

Another 13-year-old record fell in the second swimming event of the afternoon, the 200-yard freestyle.

East senior Stephanie Garvin won the race in 1:51.06, more than a second faster than the 1:52.32 time set by the Saints’ Laura Lipskis in 2000, when it was still just St. Charles High.

“I really was not expecting it at all,” Garvin said. “I just really wanted to go get the state cut and maybe drop

some time. … I couldn’t have done it without coach Joe [Cabel] and my other teammates because they really helped me this whole season.”

Also helping by pushing Garvin in the race was North Star sophomore Monica Guyett, whose second-place time of 1:52.82 qualified her for state.

“I felt good,” Guyett said.

“I just wanted to qualify for state and make sure I had a good seed time for state. I think I did pretty good on that.”

Third-place finisher Izzie Bindseil of East also qualified with a time of 1:53.76.

Garvin, Guyett, and Bindseil finished 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle, with all finishing under the state-qualifying standard. Garvin won the event in 5:00.78.

“I thought it was another good race that I was not expecting, either,” Garvin said. “I’ve been really nervous this whole week about it and everyone’s been helping me get pumped up. I was just really excited to swim and that’s probably the main factor that race.”

Garvin and Bindseil teamed up with Jordan Morling and Kate Nagler to take first in the 400 freestyle relay, coming from behind to edge North. Morling captured the 100 backstroke in 56.86 sec-

onds.

Guyett swam the anchor leg for North’s winning 200yard freestyle relay team, which set a new pool record of 1:37.11. Loriel Hutchinson, Samantha Sauer, and Grace Samuelson were the other members of the relay team, which broke a mark established in 1999 by St. Charles by nearly half a second.

“We had a lot of strong swims today and I think that was one of them,” Guyett said.

“I’m really glad we beat the pool record.”

The other pool record came in the 200 medley relay as the East quartet of Morling, Shea Hoyt, Isabel Herb, and Nagler won in 1:46.54, more than two seconds faster than the previous record, set in 2003.

“That was really fun,” Hoyt said. “I love the medley relay. It’s just like a boost of energy right at the start of the meet. It was just really fun to get it all started there.”

Hoyt won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.78, more than a second ahead of DeKalb’s Jensen Keck.

Herb was another individual champion for the Saints, winning the 200 individual medley in 2:07.33. She used a great breaststroke to pass her teammate, Morling, then finished with a strong freestyle stroke over the final 50 yards.
