Multiple car crashes reported during snowfall

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The first significant snowfall of the season fell Saturday night, and with it came reports of multiple crashes in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland area.

Three adults were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva after a crash involving a pickup truck and car at Route 64 and Wooley Road in Lily Lake, said Lt. Sheri Nielsen of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District. Fire crews were dispatched to the crash at 10:24 p.m. Saturday, Nielsen said.

The patients did not appear to have life-threatening injuries at the time of the crash, Nielsen said.

Batavia police responded to two non-injury crashes on Saturday night within a few minutes of each other, according to the department’s dispatch records. By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Ten summer cottages at Good Templar Park in Geneva were open and welcoming for guests to see them and to begin the holiday season – Nordic style.

With names such as Tomte’s Workshop, Jule Hus and Dala’s Deals, each of the featured cottages offered a variety of Scandinavian Christmas crafts for sale Saturday, as throngs of visitors came to the fifth annual Cottages in the Woods event.

Art and Cindy Rodriguez of Sugar Grove were among the many in attendance, bundled up against the brisk cold.

“We really enjoy going,” Cindy Rodriguez said. “The little cabins are really interesting – and to see the different characters of the cabins and the creativity of the artists.

And it’s a great way to start off the Christmas season.”

Art Rodriguez said he enjoyed seeing the different Scandinavian countries represented in the cottages’ designs and craft work.

“I just like the uniqueness of each cottage,” Art Rodriguez said. “And the gifts available to buy there for Christmas – it’s a good time. I encourage

Braun said the colorful chiffarobe on display was rescued from the curb, thrown out as garbage. A chiffarobe is a freestanding cabinet with drawers on one side and a place to hang clothes on the other.

“The kurbit is a symbol of God’s protection,” Braun said.

ST. CHARLES – The photo of Santa with Henrietta shows a gray-brown striped tabby cat looking intensely over Santa’s gloved hand. In Santa’s other hand, a sign reads: “Dear Santa Paws, I would like a fur-ever home. Love, Henrietta.”

Lisa Thom of North Aurora said she is fostering Henrietta as a volunteer for Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, a local rescue charity for dogs and cats. In fact, the photos with Santa event was sponsored by HELP at the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic on Saturday, she said.

Thom said she is just trying everything she can think of to highlight Henrietta to be adopted.

“We thought somebody will see her picture and want to come and meet her,” Thom said.

According to her bio on HELP’s website, she was brought to the agency in February and adopted out in May. However, the new owner suddenly had to move to an apartment and could not keep a cat and Henrietta was returned in September.

A triple-option attack calls for linemen to routinely leave defensive ends or linebackers unblocked to advance to the next level of the defense.

The quarterback then reacts to the defenders’ positioning and either hands off to the fullback or fakes and keeps the ball. In the event of a keeper, the quarterback still can pitch out to a running back as he begins moving upfield.

For the Trojans, sticking with sophomore fullback Tyler Pennington (33 carries 162 yards) did just fine at the outset. Pennington scored three times in the first quarter on runs of 1, 3 and 1 yards, helping Cary-Grove capitalize on early Geneva shakiness.

The Trojans’ opening touchdown followed the first of five Geneva interceptions and six turnovers overall.

The second score followed a surprise onside kick.

Everything shifted in the second quarter. Geneva outgained Cary-Grove, 132-20, with the defense reading Pennington and the offense excelling behind a mix of screens to running back Justin Taormina and longer routes to wide receiver Mike Landi.

Quarterback Daniel Santacaterina hit Landi for a 26-yard touchdown with 10:56 to play in the quarter and found Jack Mayes for six yards just before halftime, helping Geneva draw to within 19-13 at halftime.

“I don’t know if there was anything really different that went on,” Hood said. “We just got our heads into it. We set down in our huddle that we would pound them the next drive after getting our butts beat … and we did. It was just straight motivation to get after them, bring it in the end zone. And it worked.”

Well before the handshake line, before Cary-Grove sealed the game with a 99yard touchdown drive in the second half after an interception at its 1-yard line, Geneva’s temperament was clear.

“We were just having fun.

We were just being us,” Santacaterina said. “They might have been a little better than us, but we thought that we just had to be better than them for one day. And it was just fun. We were executing, things were going our way. It was real fun. That’s all I can say, really. We were just having fun.”

Cary-Grove wrestled the momentum back after halftime, spreading its carries between Pennington, quarterback Jason Gregoire (19 carries, 125 yards) and running back Matt Sutherland (nine carries, 49 yards).

Aided by Geneva personal foul and facemask penalties, the Trojans scored on a 14yard Sutherland run to open the second half. Taormina followed with a 16-yard scoring run three minutes later, but Cary-Grove, as it has

CARY – Geneva football players shuffled through Saturday’s postgame handshake line with faces varied with tears, scowls and expressionless gazes.

If you looked hard enough, an occasional Viking bordered on converting to a more optimistic look.

Naturally, there were no smiles after Geneva’s 44-26, season-ending loss to unbeaten Cary-Grove in a Class 7A quarterfinal, but perhaps more than any other group that greeted the Trojans immediately after a defeat, this one sensed relative accomplishment.

Cary-Grove (12-0), which still hasn’t trailed this season, led by just six points at halftime after the Vikings (10-2) counterpunched out of a disastrous start.

The outcome remained in doubt into the fourth quarter, and Geneva at least could wear the distinction of being the Trojans’ toughest foe to date.

“I’m just really proud of what our boys did today,” Vikings right guard T.K. Hood said. “We beat them down. We did what no other team has been able to do to them this year, and we put their backs against the wall. We had it.

It was close. It just didn’t get to us. But I’m freakin’ proud of what our guys did. Getting down on them. Hitting hard.

They bullied us a little bit, but … we came back and kept composure, kept our heads.”

That proved an increasingly tall order after the Trojans raced to a 19-0 lead after just 10:47. Cary-Grove’s triple-option offense presented a unique challenge to an improved Geneva defense, which entered the afternoon with 171 points allowed in 11 games, compared to 301 in 10 games last season.

“We knew it was going to be a battle, and I loved the way we handled adversity, especially since we haven’t had much of it this year,” Trojans senior guard/defensive tackle Michael Gomez said.

“They came out hard. We came out hard. We never rolled over. They never rolled over,” Chambers said. “It was just a fight. It was just a battle, and they came out on top.

They’re a [heck] of a team, and I hope they go far.”

Cary-Grove advanced to next week’s semifinals with its winning streak intact at 12, and with Geneva an important part of the display in its rear-view mirror.

“I think they probably respect us after that battle,” Santacaterina said. “We definitely respect them.”

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com NORMAL – St. Francis girls volleyball coach Peg Kopec was musing about “Mix it up at lunch day” at St. Francis, in which students are encouraged to sit at different lunch tables than usual to interact with new people.

She spoke in the context of a different postseason path that allowed the Spartans to meet Joliet Catholic in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state championship match rather than in sectional play, but the cafeteria imagery is versatile for the Spartans’ volleyball program, which continues to take everyone’s lunch money throughout the state.

The Spartans powered past the Angels, 25-18, 25-23, to win their third straight 3A state championship and 11th state title under Kopec.

Spartans senior Sarah Muisenga said she had no question St. Francis would finish the job when she walked into Redbird Arena on Saturday.

“No. I could feel it,” said Muisenga, who supplied consecutive kills to open the second set. “Everyone was just so pumped and excited.”

Junior outside hitter Molly Haggerty, the Spartans’ most intimidating player, came to the team’s rescue when the second set tightened late. Haggerty drilled kills to put the

“Last year obviously was really special playing with my sister and winning with Maddie,” said Haggerty, who eventually will follow Maddie Haggerty to play collegiately at Nebraska. “And then this year for sure, winning with all

the seniors. … I love them, I’ve known them since I was young, and especially Mary Boken.

We’ve played together since we were 12 and that was our last game ever playing together, so this was definitely a big game and it meant a lot.”

St. Francis (38-4) roared to an 8-1 lead to open the match, and Joliet Catholic (25-17) came no closer than four points the rest of the first set.

Haggerty led the Spartans with nine kills while Boken

and Kamryn Malloy added eight apiece. Boken, a four-year varsity player and Clemson recruit, gushed about her experience in the program, which included four state medals, beginning with a third-place finish as a freshman.

The Spartans project to be bumped up to Class 4A next year as the IHSA implements its new “success factor.”

Safe to say the rest of Class 3A wouldn’t mind the Spartans strutting into a new cafeteria.

Temple injured in 2nd quarter of quarterfinal

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com CARY – Geneva senior wide receiver/defensive back Pace Temple left early in the second quarter of Saturday’s IHSA Class 7A football quarterfinal against Cary-Grove with an apparent torn MCL in his left knee.

Temple, also the team’s holder on point-after touchdown attempts, was injured after hauling in a high snap

after Geneva’s first touchdown in an eventual 44-26 defeat and darting down the left sideline for the end zone.

“It was just diving in and someone hit me from both sides,” Temple said. “It just buckled on me. I knew it would be [bad].”

Temple hobbled off the field under his own power and held out hope for a return, but doctors ended that optimism when they evaluated Temple at halftime.

He is set to undergo an MRI on Monday. Temple also is a top returning guard for the Vikings’ boys basketball team.

“I’m hoping that it wasn’t that serious,” Vikings coach Rob Wicinski said. “We’ll see.”

Temple used crutches and wore a knee brace while supporting the team on the sidelines during the second half.

Good to be back: Geneva played in its first quarterfinal

since the 2008 team finished as 7A runners-up.

“I mean, we had kids in our school that didn’t even know what a second-round playoff game was,” Wicinski said. “So the seniors did a great job.

I’m really proud of them. I’m going to miss them. They did a great job of taking the program to a place where we’ve been in the past.”

Cap tipping: Cary-Grove’s first-team defense allowed its first points since Week 6, as

Geneva pushed the Trojans like no other opponent this season.

“I would have preferred a running clock [40-point lead], but when we were up, 19-0, then they got a couple scores, and it was like, ‘OK, this is a ballgame,’ ” Trojans coach Brad Seaburg said. “It was a battle the rest of the way. We knew our kids could compete and our kids proved it.”

North freshman Audrey Guyett won the 500 freestyle with a time of qualifying time of 4:59.57. Her sister Monica, a junior, qualified right behind her with a 5:04.03, while Pearson grabbed third and qualified with a 5:07.24.

After watching Monica compete at state last season, Audrey was looking forward to her first attempt at swimming with the best, while learning from her sister.

“It’s going to be great having everyone there, especially Mo since she’s just great,” Guyett said. “We have a fun time together.”

For the Saints, Pearson captured the 200 yard freestyle with a qualifying time of 1:53.45 over Monica Guyett’s 1:53.94.

FOOTBALL: ST. FRANCIS 41, HINSDALE SOUTH 14

Spartans saunter past Hinsdale South WHEATON – Clint Bobowski has played in just about every football offense there is, from a Wing-T to pro style to spread.

Based on Saturday’s showing, the spread offense suits him just fine.

The St. Francis senior quarterback tossed four firsthalf touchdown passes to help lead the Spartans to a 41-14 home playoff win against Hinsdale South in a Class 6A quarterfinal football game.

“We came out slow a few times this year and always bounced back, but we said this week that we were going to go from the beginning and that’s what we did,” Bobowski said.

“We got a couple long passes, a couple great runs by Steve [Fassnacht], the line blocked great today, and the receivers did an unbelievable job. Matt Hanson bailed me out a few times.”

The Bobowski-to-Hanson connection proved to be a prolific one all day, starting on the second play of the game when the pair hooked up for a 62-yard completion that set up Fassnacht’s 9-yard scoring run a little over two minutes into the game.

Hanson bookend the second quarter with two highlight-reel worthy touchdown catches as the Spartans (10-2) pulled away from the Hornets (9-3).

First was a 52-yard strike in which he hauled in Bobowski’s pass in tight coverage after South’s Jawahn Downing nearly came up with the interception. That score gave St. Francis a 14-7 lead, and in the waning seconds of the first half he ripped the ball away from Downing for a 9-yard touchdown that gave the hosts a 34-7 lead at intermission.

“A few times it looked like it was maybe going to the other guy, but Matt made some phenomenal catches to-

day and bailed me out a few times,” Bobowski said. “We have great receivers out there and I know if I give them a chance they’re going to come up with it.”

St. Francis coach Mike Fitzgerald seconded Bobowski’s scouting report on the Spartans’ receivers.

“We have a lot of talented receivers,” Fitzgerald said. “I think [Hinsdale South] came into the game trying to take Michael Shaw out of it, and Matt Hanson was able to exploit that.”

Thomas Petrando (34 yards) and Chris Smith (24 yards) also hauled in Bobowski touchdown passes in the second quarter. Hanson and Smith even got it done on the other side of the ball. Each had an interception that ended a Hinsdale South drive before the other caught the ensuing touchdown pass.

“They were pretty solid on defense, well-disciplined and they capitalized on our mis-

takes,” Hinsdale South quarterback Robby Regan said.

“They made the most of their opportunities.”

The Spartans will face undefeated Nazareth in a semifinal game next weekend with a berth in the state championship game on the line. The Roadrunners won comfort-

ably, 54-24, against Lake Forest in another quarterfinal game Saturday.

“It’s been awhile since we’ve been this far, but we’re not satisfied,” Bobowski said.

“It’s a great accomplishment to get through the quarterfinals, but we just want one more each week.”

ST. CHARLES – While they might have divided the crowd into two distinct factions wearing orange or blue, St. Charles East and St. Charles North were united in sending a plethora of swimmers on to next weekend’s IHSA state meet.

North hosted the sectional meet on Saturday afternoon, won by East with 302 points.

North finished second with 258, while Bartlett had a strong showing late to pick up third behind 200 points.

Both the Saints and North Stars found success throughout the meet in the relay events.

East’s quartet of Jordan Morling, Kayla Jones, Isabel Herb and Kate Nagler won the 200-yard medley relay, qualifying for state with a time of 1:45.
