SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Some old friends flew in this past week and, gosh, it was good to see them. As they feasted on what appeared to be a rotisserie chicken carcass, they were rowdy and raucous; it seemed like they hadn’t changed a bit.

Though I had other things I had to do, part of me really wanted to just plop down on the curb and get caught up with my old buds Corvus brachyrhynchos, the American crows.

I’d imagine that not everyone shares this fondness for these big, black birds.

They’ve been labeled as noisy, messy and disease-carrying.

They are famous for raiding nests, helping themselves to eggs and baby birds alike.

They’ve even had a deterrent device designed just for them – the scarecrow.

For all their rabblerousing, though, crows have at least one major redeeming quality: They’re sharp. Really sharp. So sharp, in fact, that scientists rank them right up there with the great apes – chimpanzees and gorillas – in terms of intelligence.

If you’ve spent any time watching crows, you’ll know what I mean. Instead of bypassing a discarded McDonald’s bag, crows will open it up to see what’s inside. Instead of banging away at a mussel shell, they’ll drop it from up high to open it.

They’re also good at getting other animals to do their bidding. I once watched a crow spend several minutes sizing up the contents of an open trash can. Some sort of worthy morsel must have been inside, but the can was nearly empty. Jumping inside the can, and potentially getting trapped, was not on the crow’s agenda for the day.

Instead, it waited nearby, busying itself with preening and other such birdish chores.

After a short time, a fox squirrel came along, no doubt attracted by the same tasty morsel. It jumped down into the can, grabbed the tidbit – it looked like part of a sandwich –

Labeled as noisy scavengers by some, American crows are highly intelligent and capable of complex problem solving. Social birds, they are rarely seen alone. and took it out, intending to eat it someplace nearby. Like lightning, the crow flashed down from its perch and grabbed the treat. Mission accomplished!

Was this an act of stealing?

By our human code of conduct, yes. But from an animal behavior perspective, the crow was simply practicing a widespread foraging technique called kleptoparasitism – taking food procured by others. (Interestingly, research shows this behavior in birds is closely correlated to brain size; the bigger the brain, the more likely the species will be to kleptoparasitize its animal cohorts.) In this sense, it’s not stealing, it’s strategy.

For all their quirks, crows also have a decidedly warmand-fuzzy side. They’re playful, challenging one another to games like tug o’ war and tag. They’re also great family birds. Unlike most bird species, which push their young from the nest and out into the world, crows let their offspring stick around for several years past fledging.

These adult “kids” then help out around the family nest, bringing food to mom crow as

she incubates future generations and helping chase away potential threats – not unlike John Boy and Mary Ellen helping Mama out back there on Walton’s Mountain.

In fact, this closeness might have contributed to the crow’s downfall. When West Nile Virus arrived in Illinois in 2002, crows were hit hard.

Their family ties and penchant for communal roosting helped spread the virus quickly, and their numbers plummeted.

Denis Kania, a colleague here at the park district and our resident bird expert, recalls how during the year before the arrival of WNV, area crow counts were at an all-time high. Post-WNV, numbers plunged; by his calculations, crow populations fell to a mere 16 percent of what pre-WNV averages were.

But now comes the good news. Crow numbers are rebounding. He’s seen as many as 15 crows at one time here in the Hickory Knolls Natural Area; he’s also observed groups of crows harassing the park’s resident great horned owls.

In the past few days, I’ve seen the chicken carcass crows; another group of crows flying over Route 38 west of Randall; and a third bunch harassing a wandering cat near Davis School in St. Charles. These days, three separate crow sightings in as many days is more than just exciting; it’s (forgive me) something to crow about!

Community restitution St. Charles saving money by helping defendants complete community service

T. CHARLES – Almost every day, people in bright yellow vests are scattered around St. Charles, tasked with picking up cigarette butts, pulling weeds or washing city-owned vehicles.

They’re part of the city’s Community Restitution program, which pairs people with court-ordered community service hours with various tasks around the city – some that otherwise wouldn’t get done, program coordinator Dan Orland said.

Since its inception nine years ago, more than 1,900 people have participated in the program. Orland said the program is available to nonviolent offenders who commit misdemeanors such as theft, possession, driving under the influence or driving on a revoked license. The program is open to anyone who lives in Kane County.

To date, the Community Restitution program has saved the city more than $2.1 million, as city workers or contractors would have to take on many of the tasks defendants are assigned to do. In October, the program saved an estimated $13,100.

It is administered by the St. Charles Police Department, and Deputy Chief Steve Huffman helps oversee the program. He said it’s not only beneficial in that it saves money, it also keeps people from having to sit in jail.

“It’s beneficial to the judicial system that’s already overcrowded,” he said.

“It’s an alternative way for somebody to atone for their crime.”

Orland said those in the program help with various tasks, such as cleaning abandoned properties, clearing cobwebs from walkways and bridges, removing graffiti and helping set up or tear down for special events. He said people in the program are responsible for cleaning up 43 right-of-ways in the

“We also do weeding of all city-owned sidewalks. ... We collected 1,200 bags of weeds last year,” he said. “If the program wasn’t in place, that wouldn’t be getting done, either.”

Orland said St. Charles and Elgin are the only communities in Kane County that offer a city-run community restitution program. He said

as many as six other municipalities have contacted him about setting one up, but budget constraints tend to keep them from getting off the ground.

“It can be a tremendous undertaking. You need cooperation at various levels – with the courts, the community and departments within the city,” Huffman said.

St. Charles has one fulltime and one part-time program coordinator. Participants’ ages have ranged from 13 to 78, and some have needed to complete as few as 10 community service hours or as many as 600 hours.

Chris Adesso, public services manager with the St. Charles Public Works Department, said many tasks performed by those in the Community Restitution program would otherwise, need

to be handled by department staff or private contractor.

“So a good example would be trash pickup,” he said.

“Typically, if people involved in the program are not picking up trash, we’d either have city staff engage in that when we have other valuable work that needs to be done, or hire some temporary employee.”

Orland said many city

departments and some nonprofit organizations utilize the program, including the electric department, the meter department, the street department, Delnor Glen Assisted Living and Provena Pine View Care Center.

“We’re in high demand these days,” Orland said. “We kind of have our hands in everything.”

CHARLES – In addition to the annual Lighting of the Lights ceremony and Electric Christmas Parade, this year’s Holiday Homecoming events in St. Charles will feature a performance of the St. Charles city song, which will become official if the City Council votes in favor of it Monday.

Scott Piner of the Downtown St. Charles Partnership said the tune, “In St. Charles,” will be performed by the song’s composer, Jim Masters, during the Lighting of the Lights ceremony at 5 p.m. Nov. 29. He said Masters’ sister will accompany him on the piano.

Piner said the St. Charles East and North High School Chorales will sing along, too, and crowds will be encouraged to join in.

He said the lyrics will passed around to members of the audience.

Piner noted this will be the first time Mayor Ray Rogina will attend the ceremony as mayor, and Rogina will “flip the switch” to illuminate the city.

ST. CHARLES – Ronald G. Samuel, 82, of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at Pine View Care Center in St. Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter H. and Jeannette (nee Rose); and brother, Gerald. He is survived by his nephews, Chris (Shelly) and Mark (Liz); niece, Leah (Jim) Sherman; sister-in-law, Sandra; grandnieces and -nephews; cousins; and caring neighbors.

Born in Oak Park on Sept. 27, 1931, he was raised in Forest Park. Ron moved to St. Charles in 1957 and owned Ron’s Pet and Saddle in downtown Geneva for 23 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force and for 40plus years in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL 60174 (corner of Routes 64 and 25), followed by a service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery on Roosevelt Road in Oakbrook Terrace.

“Various people bought different things,” Lash said.

“Some just give $20 and say, ‘Use it for what you want.’ The majority have been purchasing full marching band uniforms.

We’ve had donations up to $750 for a marching band uniform and then some.”

The goal is to have new uniforms for the next school year, Lash said.

“An ideal world is, if possible, to raise money to make a February order. It takes a lot of time to have them all made,” Lash said. “We have a long way

to go. This is a big concentrated effort. ... There is a huge range of giving, but it all comes together at the end.”

Fenne said the new uniforms will be better than the old ones for several reasons.

The new ones will be easily adjustable with snaps inside the sleeves and pants to change the lengths without having to do annual alterations by hand, and the new styles will make it easier to fit a wide range of student sizes.

The new uniforms will be made of a more breathable fabric, so students won’t get so warm if they are marching on a hot day, Fenne said.

“Many of the old uniforms are beyond altering,” Fenne said. “They get a lot of wear and tear. ... Up close, they look bad. If you’re watching them on the field, you might not think much of it, but not if you get up close.”

In addition to seeking donations for the uniforms,

the boosters are hosting an ornament sale featuring a Geneva Viking as a one-man band, orchestra and choir person.

The ornaments will cost $10 at local 7-Eleven stores at 621 W. State St. and 1105 Randall Court, and at Fox Jewelers, 307 W. State St., Fenne said.

Graceffa appointed to library board

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A funny thing happened to Sugar Grove resident Pat Graceffa on Thursday.

She went to the Sugar Grove Library Board meeting as a regular citizen and came home as a newly appointed board member.

Graceffa, Pat Graceffa a longtime library Friends supporter, notified the public of this change in her status in a newsletter she sent out Friday.

Library trustee Edward DeBartolo, who was elected in

April, moved to Florida, creating a vacancy on the board.

Library trustee Bill Durrenberger nominated Graceffa to fill the vacancy.

Anthony Oliver seconded, and the vote was 6-0 to appoint her to the board.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” Oliver said. “It all comes to those who wait.”

Board president Dan Herkes was unavailable for comment.

Graceffa previously ran for the library board as a writein candidate, but she did not garner enough votes to get on the board.

Oliver said he urged Graceffa to stay active with the Friends group, even as she serves on the library board.

Oliver said she promised to

do that.

“I said, ‘I’d hate to lose you from the Friends,’ ”Oliver said.

In Graceffa’s newsletter, she promised “to always do my best for you, the taxpayer and our wonderful library.”

Graceffa did not respond to voice mail messages or an email seeking further comment.

As the previous president of the Friends, Graceffa resigned and shut down the volunteer group during a tumultuous time in 2011, when the board majority fired its library director, Beverely Holmes-Hughes, after 21 years in the role.

In comments earlier this year, Graceffa said the Friends were regrouping.

GENEVA – After 17 years of use, Geneva High School marching band uniforms have been altered, repaired and patched to the point of no return, Geneva Music Boosters vice president Kara Fenne said.

So boosters began a Sponsor-A-Uniform campaign this fall, seeking specific donations for full uniforms – parts of uniforms or just cash – hoping to buy 160 marching band uniforms, 155 tuxedos and 95 dresses for concerts.

The cost for all is about $113,000, organizers said.

“Right now, students use marching band uniforms for their concert uniforms,” boosters president Suzan Farley said. “The wind symphony and symphonic bands and [percussion methods] wear the marching uniforms, and concert band wears their own white shirts and black pants.”

The purchase will allow the band students to wear uniforms consistent with other high school music programs, boosters say.

Dorothy Lash, who is heading up the uniform campaign, said there are 120 students in marching band, but a larger uniform inventory is required because multiple sizes will be

“People have made it a tradition, and we are certainly glad for that,” said Lt. Alex Pepper, of the North Aurora Fire Department.

The turkey raffle will be from 6 p.m. Nov. 22 until midnight Nov. 23 in the fire department’s apparatus/storage and maintenance building, just north of the main fire station, 2 N. Monroe St., North Aurora For more than 50 years, the firefighters association has hosted the event. The event only seems to grow in popularity, Pepper said.

“The support from the community is unbelievable,” he said. “We pack the house full both nights. I see a lot of familiar faces each year.”

During the raffle, firefighters will sell raffle tickets. Firefighters will spin a wheel, and if a winning number comes up, that person can choose between frozen turkeys, hams, trays of steaks and pork chops.

The event raises money for several community activities and groups, such as Operation Christmas, the North Aurora Pet Parade, the North Aurora Mothers Club, North Aurora Lions Club and the North Aurora Baseball Association, along with education programs and scholarships.

Last year, the raffle raised about $13,000, Pepper said.

Tickets for the grand prize drawing are $10 each and are being sold in advance by any of the North Aurora firefighters or at the fire station.

BATAVIA – Batavia MainStreet has teamed up with Batavia High School graphics design students to create seasonal banners that will be placed on light poles in downtown Batavia.

“We try to work as much as we can with community members,” Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Joi Cuartero said. “This gives the students some real life experience and a little bit of pride for doing something for their downtown.”

Students designed up to three banners to be displayed in the downtown in the spring, summer and fall in the 20142015 seasons. Winners will be chosen by a combination of Facebook likes and a judging committee.

We can help the Philippines in other ways Our hearts go out to those who are waiting for word about family and friends whose lives have been affected by the massive typhoon that struck the Philippines last week.

Although Kane County is 8,000 miles from the Philippines, the disaster has touched people around the world, including here in our communities. There are people in our community who are worried for the safety of their family members.

The storm caused so much

damage to communications systems and homes that they are having a difficult time contacting them.

The scale of the disaster is staggering. The United Nations has said more than 900,000 people have been displaced by the typhoon.

Many of them have lost their homes and lack reliable access to food and clean water.

Doctors need medical supplies, and travel is difficult.

The official death toll is more than 4,400. Most of those who died lived on the

islands of Leyte and Samar.

This storm was one of the biggest ever – larger and more powerful than Hurricane Katrina in 2005 or Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

The United States is among the countries that have stepped up to help – U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy has said the country’s entire Pacific Command will respond to the crisis.

But we, the people, can help in other ways. A multitude of credible nonprofit

Batavia police officer who observed my elderly dad, down in my yard, from a fall. He covered him with his raincoat and called for an ambulance.

Don’t drive people out of Geneva We have the wrong Geneva School District 304 board members in office, except for the lone soul who voted against the 1 percent tax levy increase this week. Yes, our taxes are going up again next year, 1 percent.

These pie-in-the-sky school board members don’t seem to notice that Geneva has one of the more oppressive tax rates in Illinois. A topic of conversation, wherever you go, is people are planning their exit, and the No. 1 reason for leaving is high taxes.

Where is the fiscal responsibility? Enough is enough. The article in the Chronicle stated that the increase was for a number of reasons, one of which is the unexpected cost of all-day kindergarten, which is code for half-day baby-sitting and half-day teaching. Don’t drive people out of Geneva because of high taxes under the guise of a superior education. Manage with what you’ve already been given.

family, who created such a great foundation in our downtown, do with that space. They would embrace the form follows function philosophy, which would tell us that it is always full with parking that serves the businesses in the area and used as festival space that makes for so much liveliness in the downtown area. We don’t need to put up empty housing and block the view of the river. It should be a beautiful community park that provides ample spaces to make going to the businesses and picnicking available to people in the downtown area, if we want to keep St. Charles attractive.

A park would be valuable If you look along Route 38 in downtown Geneva and try to find an empty storefront, it’s very hard to find. If you look along Route 64 in downtown St. Charles, there are empty businesses. The city of St. Charles wants new development along the river in the very heart of the downtown, to include more business storefronts, which most likely will end up empty also. In addition, this development includes apartment rentals. That, too, is overabundant in town. City planners should pull the plug on this thought and put a park on this valuable piece of land. At least it would be usable empty space for all.

We’re not insignificant Listening to President Obama’s announcement for health care changes on Thursday, I heard a man who talks to us like the little, insignificant people we are in his eyes. He doesn’t know much about presidential expectations. I felt like a student in fifth grade, listening to my teacher. I expect more, and I pray for a better leader in 2016.

Congratulations to the St. Charles North High School band students, singers, music directors, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for the best high school concert I’ve ever attended, and I’ve attended many.

The students looked so professional. The boys wore black suits, white shirts and black ties. The girls wore long, black dresses. The music was tremendous. It was in honor of the veterans on Nov. 11. I thought it was really the greatest concert I’ve ever gone to, and I’ve gone to many.

The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts also participated in the ceremony by serving light refreshments before a concert and were responsible for the color guard. It was truly a wonderful experience to be there, and it was an honor to the veterans. Congratulations, St. Charles North music program. Orion Samuelson was the master of ceremonies, and after the ceremony, the students mingled with the crowd, and I had the pleasure of shaking hands with Orion’s grandson, who plays the trombone in the band. It was a wonderful experience.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A fire early Friday caused $25,000 in damage to a Batavia home, but there were no injuries, according to a news release from the Batavia Fire Department.

Firefighters went at 12:38 a.m. to the 700 block of Lathem

Street, responding to a report of a fire in the basement from a wood-burning stove. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming from the front of the one-story, single-family home. The release stated that the fire was under control by 12:55 a.m.

Firefighters said someone in the home was awake at the time of the fire, smelled

smoke and woke the family members.

All were able to leave without injury. Firefighters said

$20,000 of the damage was to the structure of the home, and damage to contents of the home was $5,000.

Firefighters from Elburn, Fermilab, Geneva and North Aurora assisted the Batavia Fire Department.

looking forward for the completion so I can stop spending my St. Charles dollars in Geneva.

The reason I’m calling is that I didn’t appreciate the gentleman from the company said “we listened closely to what our highly educated, affluent customers wanted.” I’m not highly educated, but I do have a four-year degree. I’m sorry, I don’t have a master’s degree or a doctorate, and I guess apparently those are the only shoppers who can be shopping at that mall. I love living in St. Charles, but I have

seen a lot of people from out of town who might not be highly educated. Maybe they won’t be welcome at that mall. I’m sure they’ll go there, and people will say I’m misinterpreting this. I probably am. But that comment really rubbed me the wrong way, and that’s one of the things I don’t like about living in St. Charles.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Six Nigerian child protection experts will arrive in Geneva next week to participate in a child and family development program sponsored by Changing Children’s Worlds, a Geneva-based nonprofit organization.

Changing Children’s Worlds addresses children’s full development with a strengths-based, measurable approach with community violence prevention.

The public is invited to meet with the Nigerian visitors and a visitor from Ghana, Joyce Larnyoh, at the Changing Children’s Worlds Open House, 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at 411 Stevens St., Geneva.

Changing Children’s Worlds President Kimberly Svevo, of Batavia, said the Nigerian visitors are “crit-

ical advocates for children’s rights to protection from violence,” noting children in the U.S. often face similar challenges.

The Nigerian experts will share their child protection policy and practice experience during the training program as part of a cooperative educational exchange, Svevo said.

“Among different issues they will be presenting on include domestic worker servitude that is forced upon children,” Svevo said.

The Integrative Youth Development Academy will be held for the international experts and the West Pullman community at the Kroc Salvation Army Center in Chicago, Svevo said.

Additional training for the international visitors will be in St. Charles and at the Changing Children’s Worlds office, she said.

The Spartans twice built early leads against the Cougars, and while Breese was able to fight back in Game 1, the St. Louis area opponent was no match for St. Francis and its offensive firepower.

The Spartans advanced to today’s Class 3A state final with a 25-20, 25-10 win against Breese.

The Spartans (38-3) have an opportunity to win their second consecutive Class 3A title and 10th overall state title when they play LaSalle-Peru at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Approaching an appearance in

much of the match, especially throughout a dominating effort in Game 2. The Spartans set the tone early, taking a 7-2 lead to open Game 1, aided by scoring the first five points of the match. However, Breese (35-6) rallied to tie that game at 8 largely because of the Spartans’ four consecutive unforced errors during the Cougars’ 5-1 run. Consecutive kills by freshman Kamryn Malloy tilted the lead to the Spartans, who would not trail the rest of the match.

“This has been a season-long problem in the second set,” Breese coach Jim Cook said. “We always seem to start out with our passing going bad and then our offense can’t get going. You certainly can’t play a team like [St. Francis] without our offense going.”

St. Francis never gave

Breese a chance to contend in Game 2. Led by Clemson-bound junior middle hitter Mary Boken (teamhigh nine kills), the Spartans quickly built an 18-5 lead en route to a dominating Game 2 win that featured only two St. Francis unforced errors.

“I think in the first game we were still getting our nerves out and we were obviously ready to play; we had really tough competition this whole year,” Boken said.

“We’re prepared, and we have the physical talent to do it.

In the second game, I think we just put into action better than we did in the first game.”

Malloy (six kills) and sophomore outside hitter Molly Haggerty (four kills) presented a tough matchup for Breese throughout the match.

Asked if St. Francis goes into a match expecting to dominate, Kopec said, “We’re confident in our preparation.”

However, Kopec made clear that the program’s previous state experience

is unique to each respective team.

Kate Peterburs considered downstate Quincy and McKendree among her leading college options, but the thought of playing college softball several hours from home wasn’t ideal to the slugging infielder.

Then Wisconsin-Parkside entered the recruiting picture, and the closer proximity combined with an attractive, wooded campus setting and an “amazing” coaching staff made up the St. Charles East senior’s mind.

“When Parkside popped up, it was perfect,” Peterburs said.

Peterburs participated in two college signing ceremonies this week – one for her fellow St. Charles East softball teammates, and another for college-bound Wasco Diamonds travel players.

Peterburs has had plenty to celebrate dating to the spring as St. Charles East advanced to the IHSA Class 4A state championship game, but the past couple years have included plenty of turbulence, too.

A long list of difficult circumstances – including the deaths of two grandparents and her family dog, plus the departure of a brother to the Navy – had Peterburs feeling down for portions of her high school career. Softball helped lift her morale.

“Softball’s my favorite sport to play, it’s my favorite sport to watch and everything,” Peterburs said. “It helped me get my mind off everything that was going on. A lot of girls will tell you when you hit the ball, you hit it because you’re mad. That was a lot of it. If I was at hitting lessons, it was awesome because I could just take out any anger or stress that was built up, and I could just crush the ball.”

On top of the family circumstances, Peterburs also has dealt with numerous softball injuries, including a dislocated patella and severe bone contusion on her foot.

“I go through injuries like

every season,” Peterburs said. “But that’s just because how I play. I play so rough because if it means diving for that diving catch, then I’ll go for it. If I sprain my ankle in the process, I got that out.”

Peterburs was East’s first baseman last season but she is especially comfortable at third base, her usual position with the Diamonds. She’s not sure where she’ll land in the spring for her senior year.

“Third is my main position on my travel team so I prefer third, but first base, it gives me more experience on the field,” Peterburs said. “It gives me more playing time.

I’d rather be at first base than sitting on the bench. I’d rather be playing.”

Playing time shouldn’t be much of a concern for Peterburs this year after a dynamite junior season; the First Team Chronicle All-Area selection hit .491 and drove in 32 runs as one of the most feared sluggers for the state runners-up Saints.

East is slated to return most of its lineup from last year’s group, including a trio of Peterburs’ teammates who also were part of the signing ceremony at the school – pitcher Haley Beno and outfielder Sarah Collalti, both of whom picked Olivet Nazarene, and outfielder Tess Hupe, who chose Illinois-Springfield.

Boys basketball teams just completed their opening week of tryouts and preseason practice. Kane County Chronicle sports intern Matt Puttin caught up with Batavia boys basketball senior forward Ryan Olson for this week’s Weekend Chit-chat to discuss what the Bulldogs have to look forward to in 2013-14. The following is an edited transcript:

Weekend Chit-chat with BATAVIA BASKETBALL’S RYAN OLSON

What are the expectations coming into this season?

As a second-year varsity team member and in coach (Jim) Nazos’s second year, I think that the expectations are a lot higher. It took sometime last year getting used to the new offense. Now, since we have guys that are experienced with the offense, I think we are better prepared this year.

What are you most looking forward to in your final season of Batavia basketball?

We have a great group of senior guys. We have been playing together since the beginning of middle school.

Being able to play with these guys for so long has been special. We are ready to compete.

What team trips are planned this year?

We have two total trips planned. The first trip is early in our season and that is to Quincy High School. Later in the year, coach Nazos just announced a new trip, and that is to Rock Island.

How is the team chemistry coming along?

Speaking as a senior, we have always clicked when we are on the court together.

The juniors have been great.

They are very adaptive and are hard workers. This team as a whole is a group that can bend and adapt to many different situations.

How do you guys plan on rebounding from a tough conference record last year to this year?

Quite honestly, we just have to grind out games. We see ourselves as a team that isn’t about the glitz and glamour. We will have to grind out games in order to get wins. We have to be the most fundamentally sound team in the Upstate Eight Conference.

It takes a lot of practice and

a lot of will. I know with this group of guys we will able to get it done.

What does the Ken Peddy Windmill Classic mean to you?

It’s definitely the front gate to our season. Starting off the year with this tournament is always a great event.

The Ken Peddy Windmill Classic means so much more than the face value of the event.

It is dedicated to a man that worked behind the scorer’s table during the Jim Roberts era. Mr. Peddy is a man that symbolizes Batavia basketball in the right way.

Men like him behind the scenes is what makes Batavia basketball so special.

THE BEST PLAY BY PLAY.

What is the matchup for Batavia at its annual Night of Hoops?

We will be playing St. Joseph this year, a very historic basketball program in the state of Illinois. St. Joseph is a tough team.

They can score at will, they can defend well, and their players are long and athletic. It will take a really sound, fundamental game to beat St. Joseph.

What colleges are you [considering]?

I would really like to pursue a major in journalism and finance with a minor in political science. I am looking at Indiana University, University of Missouri and the University of Illinois.

Athletically, I would like to play baseball but I know that would have to be at a smaller local school in the area.

What is your prediction for the Batavia-Lake Forest playoff football game this weekend?

Batavia will win a close one, 32-29.

NIU steers clear of flags

Illini on verge of 20th straight Big Ten loss

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois’ 48-27 win over Ball State Wednesday featured the Huskies’ offense moving the ball at will.

There were two highlight-reel third-down plays from Jordan Lynch. The Huskies’ defense held Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning and Co. in check during the second half, allowing only three points.

At Friday’s news conference at the Yordon Center, NIU coach Rod Carey said he was pleased with all three phases of his team’s game – offense, defense and special teams.

But the thing Carey was most happy about was his team’s lack of penalties. NIU didn’t commit a single penalty all game for the first time this season.

“It’s really hard to go

through a game with no penalties. To do that you really have to have, I don’t know if luck is the right word, you probably have to be fortunate,” Carey said. “And we probably were in some cases, but that’s something we’ve been harping on. The ones that we could control, we got controlled.”

Through 10 games, NIU has averaged 6.67 penalties a game, a total which ranks 94th in the nation. After committing a season-high 14 penalties against Eastern Illinois Week 4, NIU had only two penalties against UMass before committing none Wednesday.

“I think the discipline part of any football team, the longer you play those are the things you pay attention to, and I think we are,” Carey said.

On the other sideline, Ball State came into the game as one of the most disciplined

teams in the nation, averaging less than four penalties a contest. The Cardinals had two false start penalties on their first drive, and Ball State finished the game with six penalties for 45 yards.

By STEVE GREENBERG Chicago Sun-Times CHAMPAIGN – Tim Beckman isn’t the first Big Ten football coach to inherit a rather small conference losing streak and have it grow into an albatross on his watch.

At Wisconsin, for example, there once was a coach who lost his first 14 Big Ten games, bringing his program’s league losing streak to 19. Two seasons after finally shedding the albatross, Barry Alvarez won his first of three Rose Bowls.

No one’s comparing Beckman to Alvarez, but the two are among the few who know what it’s like to try to coach their way out of the rubble of a 19-game Big Ten losing streak. With another loss today against No. 3 Ohio State, Illinois’ tragic number will

move to 20, the first six of which happened before Ron Zook was jettisoned.

The Illini, 33-point underdogs against the Buckeyes, almost surely will leave Wisconsin, Minnesota (19 in a row from 1982 to ’84) and Indiana (19 in a row from 1959 to ’62) behind on the Big Ten’s all-time list of losers.

If that happens, they’ll trail only Northwestern, which had an epic 38-game league losing streak from 1978 to ’82.

Not surprisingly, the streak isn’t one of Beckman’s favorite things to discuss with his players. He could hit them over the head with it, but how would that motivate them to do better?

They’re suffering more than enough as it is.

“It being brought up is something I’d rather stay away from,” Beckman said.

When trouble finds you, try escapism as an antidote What did I do when faced with a white picket fence all torn asunder? Why, what any red-blooded American woman would do. I took myself out to lunch.

Tuesday morning, after I recovered from the frustration of watching and hearing my dear, old fence be smashed to bits by two cars colliding in the intersection outside our home and sliding right over the sidewalk and into it (so glad Noah had just finished walking the dog moments earlier!) – and from dealing with the police report and insurance details – I headed to Town House Books and Café in St. Charles.

Thank goodness no one was badly hurt.

It reminded me of my accident in March, when someone totaled my car after she skipped her stop sign.

Yes, a visit to my favorite café was the perfect antidote to a morning filled with discon-

It’s perfect because I can always count on them for great quiche and because it’s located in the perfect independent bookstore. And there was no way I would ignore the books, on this trip.

Escape is what I was after, and escape is what I found.

On the very first table I spotted “A Fine Romance” by Susan Branch.

It’s a travel journal of sorts that details one couple’s meeting, courtship and, 25 years later, their voyage to England aboard the Queen Mary II, and a delectable account of their several-weeks-long sojourn through the English country-

side. This gorgeous diary-style book, which is filled with the author’s own sketches, even comes complete with a bound ribbon bookmark.

I was smitten.

I’m a big fan of patronizing the library (free reads!), but this book’s a keeper, meant to be savored and referenced for years to come, so I cast about in my addled brain for any excuse to buy it.

Yes! Christmas is coming.

Mom. I’ll buy it for Mom. She’ll love it, I decided, so I made my purchase.

Did I want it gift-wrapped?

I winced. Not quite yet, I thought, as I clutched it to my chest and walked through the quaint little building into the café, where I tucked myself into one of the last empty chairs.

I enjoyed a warm slice of their quiche of the day, apple and onion (pure joy on a plate!); a cup of cilantro and rice soup; and perused the endpapers of

Then, I read the first chapter. You know, just to make sure it’d be right for Mom. (Who am I kidding? By bedtime I’d already read more than a quarter of it. I was in love.)

Then I spied a couple sharing a piece of pie topped with cream. Yum. It was the cream I was after, so, short of asking for a dollop, which I’m not above doing (you should know that about me, by now), I decided, instead, to order a cup of hot chocolate to go with it.

I drank it all the way home as I spotted leaf piles dusted with freshly-fallen snow, which still waited for the snuffaluffagus truck to come by and suck them up.

I get a kick out of how much they resemble puffy snowbanks.

Yes, marveling at the marvelous is how I cope with the other stuff that befalls this mom’s life.

Indeed. I may have been headed home to face a still-splintered fence and a grab-bag of after-school possibilities laced with potential hormone-induced meltdowns – the kids’ and mine – but the sun shone in stunning fall fashion, and I’d found some things to smile about.

At bedtime, after I read Ms. Branch’s account of driving for the first time on the left side of the road, a madcap moment, after which she quotes Inspector Clouseau: “There is a time to laugh and a time not to laugh, and this is one of them.”

I laughed out loud and then turned out the light.

What a lovely way to end what began as a challenging day. Works for me.

By MELINDA HENNEBERGER The Washington Post On and off the page, Ann Patchett credibly presents herself as “unsentimental.” A practical, unsloppy sort of person, she’s too disciplined, she says, to produce a beautiful patch of prose that’s going nowhere in particular.

Unoperatic even if she does love opera, the author of “Bel Canto” and “The Patron Saint of Liars” is relieved to be turning 50 in a couple of weeks, because with age has come freedom at last from that tedious conversation about how she will want kids someday but just doesn’t know it yet.

The title of “This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage,” her new collection of autobiographical essays, is an irony-free reference to a private life so long undisturbed by demons that at this point, she swears her greatest regret is ever getting the e-mail account she checks more than she thinks she should.

Everywhere she goes, she says, men tell her their wives, girlfriends and moms just love her. When she set out to save the independent bookstore by opening one in her hometown of Nashville two years ago, she became the patron saint of writers, too. This is the mission she calls “my ‘save the whales,’ my ‘let’s cure cancer,’” and that focus has made her less interested than ever in wasting time or tears on personal drama.

“I’m not somebody who cries’’ more than every couple of years, she says.

Nor is she somebody who even believes in writer’s block; it’s called procrastination, she tells some students who imagine they’ve “suffered cruelly” from it, she writes in “The Getaway Car,” one of several pieces about writing in “Happy Marriage.”

If that straightforwardness offended any of the tender shoots in her class, well, she herself rarely takes umbrage: “I don’t get my feelings hurt for the most part.” Nor, she assures me, does she care what’s written about her, and in fact doesn’t read her own interviews, because “there’s nothing to learn’’ from them.

Not ever? Nope. “Anything you say about me – you go for it, girl – I will never know. So, wide-open field.’’

Author Ann Patchett, whose new collection of autobiographical essays is titled “This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage,” has made avoiding drama a goal.

She does seem wide open, too, with her shoes kicked off and her feet pulled up underneath her on the sitting room sofa in her New York hotel suite. If “go for it” wasn’t an invitation to ask what I really wanted to know, what would be? It wasn’t, though. Not at all, as it turned out.

It’s only Day Two of her book tour but she feels, she says, like she’s been on the road for a year already. She quotes her pal Elizabeth Gilbert, on the deprivations of life on tour: “As Liz says, the problem is it’s redeployment; we’ve been to Afghanistan and we’ve been home for two years” and have to ship out again.

Now, maybe the woman who wants to save books shouldn’t cop to such feelings about promoting them. But if you’re going to tell the truth about other people, she says, you can’t very well let yourself off the hook.

She never does that in her nonfiction – and is admirably willing, really, to show herself in a less than gauzy light, being stern and even ...

“Unfaithful?’’ she says, finishing the sentence. (Though not, I should clarify, to her current husband.) Actually, I was thinking more about her admis-

sion that she hadn’t wanted to take her dazzling, exhausting, doomed best friend Lucy Grealy to the New York Times holiday party not long before Grealy died of a heroin overdose in 2002; admitting that is a lot braver than owning up to an end-of-the-marriage affair.

As Patchett says in “Truth & Beauty,” her 2004 memoir of her intense friendship with Grealy, “I didn’t tell Lucy” about the party because “if she had come, she would have ruined it for me.”

So, is the confessional impulse in her work a Catholic thing? After all, Patchett has said that as a working woman who never wanted to have children, her role models were the Mercy nuns who taught her.

“Where the Catholic thing comes in is this idea if you do something really good, you’re not allowed to tell. So I can’t say something too good, and obviously, I’m no idiot; I can’t say horrible things about myself,” either.

But do female writers have more reason to leave out those “horrible things?” It’s more than OK for men who are great writers to behave badly, but women?

The question of whether women are under any extra pressure to be “nice” doesn’t interest her, but the idea that nice women must want babies sure does.

“People will say to me, ‘You’re a very nurturing, loving person and you would have made a great mother.’ Who cares? ...”

When she gets back from this book tour, she’s planning to go back into that quiet, distraction-free room to start “the boring, close-to-home novel’’ that “everyone else wrote at 25.” Until now, it was important that nobody think she was borrowing from her own life because she didn’t want to embarrass her family. She did, of course, draw quite directly on her friendship with Lucy Grealy – and embarrassed at least one of Lucy’s sisters, who complained in the Guardian. She neither knows nor cares what Grealy’s sister wrote, she says.

She is, after all, a storyteller.

Though she is more sensitive than she thinks, that may be required in her line of work.

Teen’s marijuana use puts friend in tough spot Dear Abby: I’m a senior in high school. Every day during lunch, one of my friends goes outside and smokes weed with a couple of his friends.

He comes back from lunch with red eyes, smelling of smoke and his behavior indicates that he’s high. I’m not sure if they smoke on or off campus, but I know it isn’t legal at their age (17), and especially not at school. I saw a joint in his pocket a couple of times and he told me to keep it a secret.

Abby, this has me very uncomfortable. If he wants me to keep it a secret, he must know it’s wrong. I don’t know how to tell someone or even who I should tell. I know he has depression and weed can “take the edge off,” but that doesn’t make it OK. What should I do? Should I tell anyone? Diet rich in fruits, vegetables has true health benefits Dear Doctor K: I try to cook dinner most nights, but by the end of the day, I’m too tired to make sure the meals are balanced. Can you suggest easy ways to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into our dinners?

Dear Reader: When I come home from work, hungry and tired, I’m apt to snack on whatever’s in the fridge. If what I see in the fridge is a slice of pizza, I’ll reach for it. But if I see some hummus to spread on a cracker – a much healthier option than pizza – I’ll snack on that.

In other words, if I’m hungry and tired, I’ll grab what’s convenient and not think a lot about healthy eating. So, if you’re like me, you’ll need to be organized to make healthy eating a priority.

Start by scheduling a regular time to plan your weekly menu. This will give you a chance to plan nutritionally balanced meals before the kids start asking, “What’s for dinner?” Make a shopping list to help you stock your kitchen with the foods you’ll need to cook these healthy meals.

Now that you have a strategy, here are some easy ways to

You can roast any vegetable – from mushrooms, onions, eggplant and zucchini, to tomatoes, broccoli and carrots. Enjoy roasted veggies as a side dish or toss them into pasta. At the end of the week, puree leftover roasted veggies with chicken broth to make soup.

• Poach vegetables. Boil enough liquid (water or low-sodium chicken broth work well) to cover the vegetables. Add them and turn down the heat.

Cook for five to seven minutes, until the vegetables are brightly colored and tender-crisp.

• Smuggle fresh vegetables into main dishes. Add mushrooms, peppers, zucchini or carrots to pasta sauce, casseroles, soup, stews, scrambled eggs and chili.

• Have a salad with dinner most days. Build your salad

with dark, leafy greens. Toss in peas, tomatoes, celery, carrots and peppers. Limit yourself to 1 1/2 tablespoons of low-calorie dressing.

• Choose fruit – fresh, frozen, stewed or baked – for dessert.

It all counts toward your daily produce quota.

My mom is now all paranoid, and tells me I have to stop being friends with this girl immediately. I have never been to this girl’s house and I don’t know anything about her family, but I only know that this girl is a kind and sweet girl, and does well in school.

Defense is the hardest part of the game, as we all know. But most pairs spend little time discussing it, preferring to concentrate on bidding.

If you feel your partner’s basic defense needs sharpening, buy her or him “Defensive Play at Bridge: A Quizbook” by Barbara Seagram and David Bird (Master Point Press). This book is aimed at near-beginners and intermediates.

The book starts with 10 pages of basic instruction. Then there are four pages specifically about no-trump contracts, followed by 34 quiz questions on a righthand page with the full deal and answer on the next left-hand page. Next, there are two pages about suit contracts, followed by 30 quizzes. Finally, there is a glossary. In addition, there are valuable “points to remember” on each question and each answer page.

The book is excellent for its market.

Here is one of the no-trump questions. Look only at the North and West hands. South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade six. East wins with his queen and returns the spade 10, South playing the five and the eight. How should West defend?

South must be holding up the spade ace. But it is the only unseen spade. So, West should overtake his partner’s 10 with the king (or jack) and lead another spade to dislodge that ace. Then, with this layout, the contract can no longer be made.

If West does not overtake, East will have to shift. Then South has time to dislodge West’s diamond king and take one spade, three hearts, four diamonds and one club.
