Welcome to The Quad Charlestowne Mall redevelopment moves forward with new ownership

T. CHARLES – At most, Lesty Valdez visits Charlestowne Mall about once a month, usually to visit anchor stores Carson Pirie Scott or Von Maur.

Sitting on a bench in the sparsely populated shopping center Thursday, the Hanover Park resident recalled more prosperous times.

“We came here a lot before,” she said, noting it seems like another store is closed with each visit.

New owners hope to change that perception.

Thursday, Sperry Van Ness/Landmark Commercial Real Estate completed the sale of Charlestowne Mall – a 1.1 million-square-foot enclosed shopping center on about 80 acres of land – to The Krausz Companies Inc. Managing director and broker Neil Johnson and adviser Joel Miller represented the seller and buyer in the transaction.

They said in a press release that the spaces occupied by anchors Von Maur and Kohl’s were not included in the sale because they are owned separately.

“The city of St. Charles is very pleased that we have passed this first phase for mall redevelopment,” City Administrator Mark Koenen said.

The Krausz Companies will seek to bring a lineup of new retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues to the mall, which will be renamed The Quad St. Charles.

David Pyle, executive vice president of The Krausz Companies, said in a written statement that the project was selected after extensive market research. He said population growth, the economic strength of the region and strong support from the city of St. Charles contributed to the company’s decision.

“All of the common area interiors will be extensively renovated by capitalizing on the ‘good bones’ and abundant natural light of the existing structure to create a completely reimagined environment that is elegant and timeless,” Richard Wilden, the director of design for ka architects, said in a written statement.

Christmas tree auction to support foundation

nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Last year’s Northern Nights, Trees and Lights event was such a hit that Carolyn Nagle said a larger location was needed for the second annual wine tasting and Christmas tree auction.

The event will help raise money for the Fox Valley Special Recreation Foundation, which, along with the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association, provides services to adults and children with special needs.

The fundraiser also will go toward a scholarship fund to send those with special needs to an eight-week camp, and includes transportation, said Nagle, director of the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association.

Nagle said the event was held at Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva last year, when organizers far exceeded their goal of $5,000 by raising $14,000.

She said the event had to be relocated to the Hilton

Several fully decorated artificial Christmas trees will be up for sale through a silent auction, and wreaths, special trips and more than 50 gift baskets also will be on sale through raffles and auctions.

Each Christmas tree has a theme and they vary in size. Nagle said the staff at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles deco-

rated a 7½-foot tree decorated in “forage” materials.

The staff of the South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department decorated a tree themed “50 shades of blue.”

Other tree themes include candy canes and New Year’s Eve, and children’s themes such as LEGOLAND imagination and dancing fairies.

Nagle said one of the bigger prizes includes a weeklong trip to stay in a five-bedroom home in Captiva, Fla. Other prizes include restaurant gift certificates and prime window seating at Pub 222 in St. Charles to watch the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

In addition to the auctions and raffles, Nagle said appetizers, wine and dessert will be served.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina and Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns have agreed to attend and assist with raffle ticket sales, Nagle said. Ron Onesti, president and CEO of Onesti Entertainment Corp. and the Arcada Theatre, will emcee the evening, Nagle added.

Kane County Farm Bureau to host free workshop ST. CHARLES – Kane County Farm Bureau will host a free workshop for farmers, drainage commissioners and contractors at noon Dec. 12 at 2N710 Randall Road, St. Charles.

The workshop will provide information about local, state and federal regulatory issues affecting farmland drainage and stormwater management.

Chairman: Aurora Area Convention Bureau moves ahead

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The chairman of the board of directors for the Aurora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau said the bureau is moving forward after separating with its executive director.

“It is business as usual,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman, chairman of the bureau’s board of directors, said Thursday.

Chris Hamilton, who had been the bureau’s executive director since August 2011, is no longer with the bureau as of Nov. 6. The bureau serves 10 communities, including Aurora, North Aurora, Batavia and Sugar Grove.

Berman said he could not comment on why Hamilton is no longer the bureau’s execu-

tive director.

“I wouldn’t say there was any great animosity,” Berman said. “It was something that happened. In the business world, these things happen every day. I think Chris did a good job.”

An email sent to board members Friday stated Hamilton was no longer with the bureau, and a search committee would be named and a firm selected to seek a new executive director.

“I would like to find a new executive director within 60 days, if possible,” Berman said.

Berman said he also would like to bring in a consultant to review the bureau’s operations and organization.

“Is there a better way to do things?” Berman asked.

“There could very well be.”

“I was totally prepared for painting a large canvas, but at the same time, once I got into it – you don’t realize how big it is,” Bielefeldt said. “It’s a difficult thing to do, and I really respect any artist that takes that job on.”

Though challenging last year, Bielefeldt used the rain barrel’s curved canvas for a reproduction of one of his 50 large paintings called “Ripples.”

Womack said he adapted it to the curves of the rain barrel putting in shoreline on the bottom and various colors to represent ripples in water.

Womack said Bielefeldt’s barrel received the highest bid last year, about $300.

Bielefeldt said he’s going to try to beat that success for next summer’s auction.

“It’s going to be tough ...

but I’m going to give it a try,” he said.

Geneva resident Dana Christensen said she was encouraged to take a rain barrel by her friend, Lisa Goewey, who painted one last year.

“I do not have too much opportunity to do art,” Christensen said. “I took art in college, then I was working full time, now I’m a stay-at-home mom to two kids age 9 and 3.

This is forcing me to be creative.”

Whatever she decides to paint on the barrel, Christensen said, it will fit into a theme of nature, possibly using images from the children’s book “The Giving Tree,” written and illustrated by the late Shel Silverstein, as a stepping off point.

“I keep staring at a white primed rain barrel,” Christensen said. “What am I going to do? But it should be so fun.

I’m excited to support the

cause. And it’s wonderful for the kids and the community.”

Christensen was inspired

by Goewey.

“Hers was gorgeous like a Van Gogh. It will be a hard act to follow,” Christensen said.

While hoping six more artists will take the remaining unclaimed rain barrels, Womack said if more artists want to participate, the committee will buy more. At $65 each, it’s a small investment for return the committee gets for its 2014 Rain Barrels on Parade campaign.

“Twenty [artists] is what we usually get after beating the bushes,” Womack said.

“If we get 30 artists who want to participate, we’ll buy 10 more – in a heartbeat.”

Since opening his restaurant across from the mall in February 2012, Alonso has struggled to generate business in an area affected by road construction and empty storefronts.

He said he hopes new life at Charlestowne Mall will bring traffic to the east side.

“This whole side of St. Charles is lacking energy,” Alonso said. “We definitely need all the help we can get.”

Willis Johnson, president of Tivoli Enterprises Inc., the

operator of Classic Cinemas, couldn’t help but repeat one phrase when asked Thursday about the mall’s new ownership.

“It’s going to be great,” he said.

Representatives of The Krausz Companies have said they plan to demolish the space once occupied by Sears and create better visibility for the 18-screen theater.

Johnson said The Krausz Companies have included Classic Cinemas in the redevelopment discussions. He expressed confidence in the new owner, noting the company has experience in revitalizing shopping centers and seems to have the means to carry out its plans.

“It just seems very positive to us,” Johnson said.

Stacey Ekstrom, president and CEO of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, said she is excited about the new ownership.

“With the completion of construction from IDOT on the east side of town, it’s a perfect

time for new retailers to open their businesses and help the economic development of St. Charles,” she said in an email.

Amy Egolf, executive director of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the redeveloped mall likely will do more than attract day visitors to St. Charles.

“It’s another way for the hotels to be able to sell their own product,” she said, noting most hotels in St. Charles are on the east side.

And they don’t have to wait until 2015 to begin reaping the benefits, Egolf said, noting many large pieces of business – such as those that land at Pheasant Run Resort or the Q Center – book their reservations early.

NEXT STEPS The Krausz Companies cleared the first hurdle on the path toward redevelopment even before it took official ownership of Charlestowne Mall.

Earlier this month, the City Council approved an amendment to the existing Charles-

towne Mall PUD that is needed to facilitate redevelopment.

Koenen said additional steps will need to be done for the project, such as granting building permits and, once construction starts, conducting building inspections.

Any financial support the city provides toward the project, such as a sales tax subsidy, will go through a public vetting process, Koenen said.

“Everyone is very serious about this project proceeding,” he said.

GENEVA – Some would say blank rain barrels are a travesty of plainness, but once volunteer artists get them painted, they will be worthy of a fundraising auction.

Jay Womack, chairman of the Geneva Natural Resources Committee, has 14 of 20 plain-Jane barrels in the hands of artists willing to take on the unusual canvas.

Once properly decorated, the 20 barrels will be part of a live auction during Swedish Days, Womack said.

Typically, organizers raise $3,000 to $5,000 for the committee to be used for tree planting and other programs promoting awareness of conservation.

“The Natural Resources Committee provides the rain barrels for free [to volunteer

artists], and we prime them so they’re ready to be painted,” Womack said. “Then they put clear coats of sealant on to protect the paint, and we put them up and down Third and State streets with signs of who painted them and if they have a name for it.”

Womack said the committee decided to do it every other year because painting the rain barrels turned out to be a daunting task, as the rain barrel presents a large canvas.

“A lot of people who take them and do them – and literally up to the last second, they’re working on them,” Womack said. “They underestimated how much surface there is on a rain barrel.”

Rain barrel painters sought for fundraiser

BATAVIA – Michael Grudecki has started a petition to convince the Batavia City Council to accept his proposal to turn the city-owned Thomle building in downtown Batavia into an upscale establishment, Tini Lounge, that will specialize in martinis.

Grudecki, president of Vignette Home Decor in Batavia, said he is frustrated with the fact that he originally made his proposal to aldermen in May, and they have yet to vote on the proposal.

He also objected to a commercial real estate company being able to recently submit another proposal for the building.

“I don’t understand why they are letting somebody else in, six months after the fact,” Grudecki said Thursday. “The city has shown that they are really not that receptive to small businesses.”

The city has been exploring whether to sell the building at 2 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia. Since 1997, the city has owned the historical building, which was built in 1876.

Grudecki said the longer the building remains empty, the longer it isn’t generating tax revenues for the city.

The city in the past has rented the space to businesses at a reduced rate to encourage new businesses into the downtown.

The latest business, Simonetti Studios, last year moved from the Thomle building to a second-story loft space at 30 Shumway Ave. Grudecki’s plan also includes renting out the building’s lower level to another

Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said the city has apologized to Grudecki about how long the process has taken. He said that Grudecki will be given the chance to give another presentation to aldermen in December.

St. Charles-based Corcoran Commercial Real Estate, which recently submitted a proposal to city staff, also will be given a presentation to aldermen.

The company wants to acquire the Thomle building and combine it with adjoining property to develop restaurant space on the first floor and residential on the upper levels, McGrath said.

He noted the proposal is similar to one presented to aldermen in May by a proposed partnership that included Batavia Enterprises. That proposal was withdrawn this week, he said.

Given the expanded scope of the new proposal, McGrath said aldermen deserve to look at it.

“We think our obligation is to do what is best for our community,” McGrath said.

“We have to look at what would be best in the longterm interest of the city.”

Don’t count on Congress to restock pantries

By MELINDA HENNEBERGER The Washington Post Hey, Congressman, can you spare a can of beans for the kids whose food stamps you cut? No? The second-floor lobby of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington would seem a promising place to hold a Thanksgiving food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank.

After all, both House Republicans and Senate Democrats have plans to reduce food stamp funding over the next 10 years, but the House Republicans want to cut $36 billion more. They talk about replacing government aid with compassionate conservatism, helping people toward independence, charity that’s private.

That giving is so private, at least on this one morning in this setting, that just one Republican sent over food during the public showing of generosity.

Two aides from the office of Rep. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia added a couple of bags of canned goods to a cluster of boxes in a corner of the white marble lobby that overlooks the Capitol across the street.

Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Florida, carried his macaroni and cheese and applesauce in himself, in a recyclable Safeway bag, unlike that plastic bag user Rep. David Price, D-North Carolina.

One after another, the lawmakers who came stood under the bust of rabid populist and 17-year House Speaker Sam Rayburn of Texas and said how bad the need is – and how much worse it’s going to get.

Nearly a quarter of District of Columbia residents receive food vouchers good for about $1.40 a meal.

Those using food stamps in America already have less this month than they did last month.

When those $5 billion in Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program cuts went into effect Nov. 1, the district’s 144,000 recipients weren’t even notified so they could plan, according to Brian Banks of the Capital Area Food Bank, which serves about 37.5 million meals a year.

Democrats and Republicans working in conference to pass a farm bill aren’t arguing over whether but how much more to cut.

The upbeat organizers of the Capitol Hill food collection – the Hoops for Youth Foundation, the American League of Lobbyists and Columbia Books – definitely weren’t trying to make a partisan point, or embarrass those lawmakers who gave new meaning to the phrase “from the mouths of babes.”

In last week’s letter, Malloy invokes an obscure quote from Pope Francis, at the time head of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, to justify his opposition to the bill.

SYCAMORE – Tonda Ranken wants to get through her first Christmas without her 11-year-old son before she thinks too much about going to court again.

On Thursday, Ranken, her sister-in-law, her niece and her niece’s friend watched Benjamin Black, 29, admit to having heroin in his system during the Feb. 27 crash that killed Matthew Ranken. Her oldest son, Nicholas Matthew Weber, was Ranken driving, and Weber’s girlfriend, Teale Noble, now 19, was severely injured as the front-seat passenger.

“I’m relieved that he is taking responsibility,” Tonda Ranken said Thursday. “... I’m still numb.”

Black, of the 1500 block of Sparkhayes Drive in Sycamore, was driving a Ford Expedition on Route 64 in Kane County about 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 when he smashed into the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier carrying Matthew Ranken, Weber and Noble. The Cavalier had been stopped for traffic backed up on Route 64 in western Kane County because of another crash more than a mile away.

Noble suffered a cracked skull, but during medical treatment, learned she was about two weeks pregnant.

She and Weber are expect-

ing their son to be born soon, and plan to name him Jett Matthew, partially in honor of the uncle he never will meet, Tonda Ranken said.

“Nicholas at the beginning couldn’t understand why he lived and Matthew had to die,” Tonda Ranken said. “He thought it should have been him. Of course, I thought it should have been nobody.”

But, after he learned of the pregnancy, he reasoned Matthew, the backseat passenger, had been protecting the baby, Tonda Ranken said.

“I think just that gave him some hope,” she said. “We all grieve so differently.”

The Rankens plan to pick out a memorial bench Saturday that will be installed at Sycamore Lake Rotary Park.

Matthew was a fifth-grader at North Elementary School in Sycamore who played football in the Sycamore Youth Football League and enjoyed fishing.

Tonda Ranken also is considering asking family members to buy Christmas ornaments that remind them of Matthew so they can decorate a small Christmas tree this holiday season in his honor.

“I just want to get through the holidays, and then we’re going to work on our victim impact statements,” Tonda Ranken said.

Family members will be able to read their victim impact statements during Black’s sentencing hearing March 20.

Backfield not just a one-man show ‘Unselfish’ group primed for 6A state quarterfinals

By IAN MATTHEWS BATAVIA – Take a quick peek at the Batavia football roster, and the often-celebrated names jump out at you – Coffey, Scaccia, Moffatt, Thielk.

The 10-1 Bulldogs are still playing for a reason, much of it because of the aforementioned players’ numerous and oftentime flashy contributions.

But as the Bulldogs prepare for Saturday’s IHSA Class 6A quarterfinal matchup with visiting Lake Forest, moving on might depend on how well Batavia blocks and mixes up its running attack against a formidable Scouts defense.

Offensively, those sometimes underappreciated tasks often fall on the shoulders of senior running backs Kevin Green and Anthony Moneghini, who selflessly target opposing linebackers to clear space for featured back Anthony Scaccia while making the most of their own limited carries.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron made it clear that if players can’t block, they likely won’t be on the field for long. The Bulldogs run under-center and shotgun plays that feature several different players that either stay in the backfield to protect quarterback Micah Coffey or seek out opposing linebackers and safeties to block and “blow up.”

The Bulldogs’ blocking prowess as a team has produced record numbers on the offensive side of the ball this season. Through 11 games, Batavia is averaging an amazing 45.7 points a game – a school record – and has scored an astounding 74 touchdowns, 48 of which have come via the run.

“I’ve been playing fullback since fifth grade so I’m pretty used to blocking all of the time and getting the ball every once in a while – I like what I do,” Moneghini said. “Scaccia is one

“It’s a big surprise for people who see me now that I played offensive line growing up,” Green said. “That’s where I got my good blocking ability from. I got injured last year and missed the entire year. Basically this

“A lot of it’s about trust; I just have to trust that they’re going to do their job,” Scaccia said. “Anthony and I have been tailback/running back together since freshman year, so we have good chemistry. Kevin is just an outstanding player who has been doing a good job this year and is finally healthy. We’re all pretty tight, we’ve been friends since the beginning of high school and even middle school.”

While the personnel is almost entirely different, the programs are somewhat familiar with each other, schematically, from Batavia’s 31-17, second-round playoff win against Lake Forest in the 2011 playoffs, also in Batavia.

Scouts coach Chuck Spagnoli said that game is helpful in “knowing how to get to the school. That’s about it.”

The Scouts weathered their second-round win against injury-plagued De La Salle – a 27-7 Lake Forest win – despite a relatively quiet day for Cirame, but it’s hard to envision Lake Forest beating a team of the Bulldogs’ caliber without Cirame (1,215 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns) enjoying a big afternoon.

Bulldogs linebackers such as Anthony Thielk (team-high 78 tackles), Donovan Kilker (57) and Jake Hlava (55) have a way of filling gaps in a hurry, and have seen plenty of quality backs on the season.

Best-case scenario for the Scouts Lake Forest’s improved offensive line stands up to the test of Batavia’s high-performing defensive line, enabling Cirame to keep the Scouts in manageable second- and third-down scenarios.

Spagnoli said the Scouts might be better equipped to fend off elite defenders this season than when Lake Forest visited Bulldogs Stadium in the 2011 playoffs.

“The difference between us now and us a couple years ago is we probably have a little more size in our offensive line,” Spagnoli said. “We’re certainly not any bigger on defense but our offensive line is a little bigger than it’s been in the past.”

on the field and prevent Bulldogs pass rushers such as Josh Leonhard and Noah Frazier from closing in on the program’s single-season sacks record.

Scouts quarterback Regis Durbin has completed 57 percent of his passes but thrown eight interceptions compared to 10 touchdown passes. He’ll want to steer clear of Bulldogs ball-hawking cornerback Michael Moffatt.

“I think if you don’t pay attention to him, you’re foolish,” Spagnoli said. “He might be the best cover guy we’ve seen all year, no doubt.”

Best-case scenario for the Bulldogs Batavia’s offense doesn’t wake up from what has been a dream season.

The Bulldogs are within 25 points of the program’s all-time points total for a season, and Anthony Scaccia is now the program’s single-season rushing (1,405 yards) and touchdown (27 overall, 21 rushing) record-holder.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron knows continued success will be well earned against a Lake Forest defense that is the Scouts’ chief strength.

“Defensively, they are probably one of the best defenses we’ve seen this year,” Piron said. “I’d put them on par with maybe even Richards or someone like that. They really get after you and they

are aggressive and they blitz.”

Batavia’s offense has been as prolific so far in the playoffs (48-6 win over DeKalb, 48-13 win over Rolling Meadows) as it was during the regular season.

The Scouts, though, aren’t accustomed to being manhandled. The only teams to defeat Lake Forest this season are still alive in Class 8A (Stevenson) and Class 7A (Lake Zurich), and even in those two losses, the Scouts allowed no more than 21 points in a game.

“They are a very tough team and a tough team that you should be seeing at this point in the playoffs,” Piron said. “This is a game that whoever wins this game, they should be very proud because of the caliber of the opponent.”

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Batavia 27, Lake Forest 16 Between Lake Forest’s formidable defense and some potentially wet and windy weather Saturday, this might be the week the Bulldogs’ smooth, well-rounded offense finally encounters some turbulence.

Just not enough to keep Micah Coffey, Scaccia and friends out of the end zone a few times, and Batavia’s defense is capable of doing its part to advance the Bulldogs to the 6A state semifinals for the second time in three seasons.

to Eagles coach Don Beebe, but he’s not about to discount Seneca based on one poor performance. “They just came out flat like we did against Marmion. It happens with kids,” Beebe said. “I think that was a mirage of what that team is.”

The Irish have rushed for 3,183 yards while throwing for only 422. Seneca quarterback Bo Taylor (1,715 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns) – who Beebe knows through House of Speed training – and Tommy Lovett (1,191 rushing yards, 14 TDs) are Seneca’s premier weapons in an offense that runs plenty of wildcat.

I think he had something to prove, and in my mind, he did that in spades.”

She guided St. Francis downstate for the first time in 1987 and captured her first state title the following fall, and is often reminded of both feats.

The Spartans defeated Fremd, 15-7, 12-15, 15-11 (remember sideout scoring?) for third in 1987. Following a brief retirement, then-Vikings coach Dave Boze joined St. Francis as an assistant a few seasons ago.

As for the team’s inaugural title, Kopec recently has been wearing the 1988 championship ring, which is fashioned like all the others. Either personally or through a Facebook page for St. Francis volleyball alumni, she asks each former Spartans state champion to wear her ring – or an identical pendant for repeat champs – this time of year for support.

“There’s older ladies with children and older children, and they’re pulling for them,” Kopec said. “So that’s kind of nice.”

Spartan sisterhood: Boken feels especially attached to the Spartans’ current seniors. Middle hitter Kristin Acciavatti, libero Sam Dubiel and outside hitter/setter Becca Shearer were teammates on last year’s title team and St. Francis’ third-place finishers in 2011.

“Definitely, freshman year I was new to the team and didn’t know everyone that well, but the seniors this year, it’s going to be really hard to lose them,” Boken said. “We’re really close. It’ll be a special experience to share with them.”

St. Francis junior middle hitter Mary Boken insists there’s still plenty of novelty in traveling to the Class 3A girls volleyball state tournament.

That she’s embarking on her third trip to Redbird Arena in Normal in as many high school seasons this weekend doesn’t matter.

“We definitely get really excited every time, and sometimes it’s hard to imagine what a real privilege it is to go down and everything,” Boken said.

“But when we step back and think about it, we definitely try to make sure that we realize every time that it’s a really great experience, and every time it surprises me, what a great feeling it is to step on the court.”

St. Francis stands two victories shy of the program’s 10th state title, having clinched No. 9 in 2012. Here’s a glance at some other Spartans’ notes entering today’s 6 p.m. state semifinal against Breese Central: Being resilient: Nebraska-bound senior outside hitter Maddie Haggerty suffered a torn labrum in early October. It arguably ranked as the highest-profile of the bunch, but still stands as just one of four season-ending injuries the team has endured.

Batavia will have a difficult task against Lake Forest’s defense as the Scouts have allowed a combined 13 points in the first two rounds of the playoffs during a pair of blowout wins over Chicago Hubbard and De La Salle.

Lake Forest plays a tough schedule in the North Suburban Conference that features powers Lake Zurich and Stevenson, both of which are still playing in larger classes.

“I know Lake Forest has a really good defense – that’s what they’re known for,” Scaccia said. “We just have to execute our gameplan and have a good week of practice.”

LOCAL BRIEF Kaneland School District 302 on Thursday announced that three retired educators will fill the role of interim athletics and activities director for the remainder of the 2013-14 school year.

Ralph Drendel, Rudy Keller and Ross Truemper will collaborate to fill the role left vacant by Leigh Jaffke’s resignation last month. Jaffke became Kaneland’s athletic director in 2000.

Drendel, a longtime former Kaneland teacher, coach and assistant athletic director, was a recent inductee into the athletic wing of the school’s hall of fame. Keller and Truemper also have extensive administrative experience, including a twoyear stint as interim principals at West Aurora.

Kaneland assistant principal Mike Rice had been overseeing athletics on a short-term basis.

Brown had just fumbled away a crucial opportunity in the red zone in the fourth quarter of NIU’s all-important game against Ball State on Wednesday night at Huskie Stadium, and it was a play which, at the time, looked like it could have led to a Cardinals victory.

Brown’s fumble, which was forced by Cardinals defensive back Eric Patterson at the Ball State 12-yard line, came after he caught a pass on a long post route which went for 54 yards.

“I need to have better ball security,” Brown said. “If I would have had better ball security it wouldn’t have happened. That’s on me.”

However, it wasn’t the last opportunity Brown would have Wednesday night.

On the Huskies’ next possession, he grabbed the game-winning touchdown on a 36-yard pass from Lynch which put NIU up by seven. The Huskies would go on to win, 48-27, staying alive in the race for the Mid-American Conference title and possible BCS bowl game.

“Stuff happens right? People fumble,” Lynch said. “I told him, I went right back up to him and I was just being honest, I was telling him ‘I’m going back to you.’ “ Brown had his first career 100-yard receiving game, and then some. He finished with eight catches for 209 yards and caught two touchdowns.

After his fumble, NIU’s only turnover of the game, Brown was able to redeem himself less than 10 minutes later.

“It felt good to come back, make a big play,” Brown said. “The whole time (after the fumble) my teammates were telling me ‘keep your head up.’ Jordan was telling me he’s going to come back to me, that showed me that he had confi-

Playhouse 38 debuts fall youth comedy to sold out crowd KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva Park District Playhouse 38 kicked off its first show with the youth comedy “Comic Book Artist,” which was a sold-out performance.

The family-friendly comedy featured 18 young local actors as they told the story of Stanley Sappovitz, the janitor at Wonder Comics, who wanted to create characters for the comic books he loved. When staff artists create a dreaded super villain with their magic pens, Stanley must save the day by creating his own super hero dream team.

“We chose Comic Book Artist as the first youth production to kick off the fall season at Playhouse 38 because of the humorous script and the ability for these young actors to relate to super heroes and villains,” the show’s director Lisa Pivaronas said in a news release.

Minivan outfitted with bells and whistles Chrysler was the first to introduce a vehicle called the minivan 30 years ago. In the intervening years the company has worked hard to maintain leadership in design and sale of this family-oriented hauler of people and cargo.

Domestic competition came and went from Ford Motor Co. and General Motors. Who remembers the Ford Windstar, Chevrolet Venture or Pontiac Montana? Who remembers Pontiac, for that matter?

Today’s prime Chrysler Group minivan competitors are automotive companies based in Japan. They are Honda (Odyssey), Toyota (Sienna) and Nissan (Quest). Chrysler remains the bellwether of minivans, whether it is the company’s Dodge Grand Caravan or its namesake Town & Country.

What has kept Chrysler at the forefront? Patience with the buying public, which can be whimsical at times, and never straying too far or even an inch from what a minivan was designed for in the first place.

Chrysler also has kept up with the times. If a competitor came out with power sliding rear doors, it followed. If faddish tailgate seats were introduced by someone else, lo and behold they became a common sight in succeeding years on Chrysler minivan products.

Chrysler learned lessons, too. In 2008 the company introduced a pop-up table in the cargo area on which to eat snacks or play games. It was not a hit and by 2011 the feature was discontinued.

In 2004, Stow ’N Go was introduced and the second of the three rows of seats could be stowed to create a flat load floor. It was a huge hit and still is. In 2005, both second and third row seats were designed to “disappear” to form a flat load floor. That is the way it stands today which means there are a possible 144 cubic feet of flat floor storage space behind the

In for a week’s test run was the 2014 Chrysler Town & Country. It was a loaded Limited model which means the asking price was $41,295. It had all the extras including power folding third row, power rear vent windows, dual screen and DVD entertainment system for second and third row viewing (overhead 9-inch screens for both rows), first and second row heated seats, a 6.5-inch touch screen and voice command, a navigation system with Uconnect (maps and audio directions for turn by turn guidance), a 506-watt, nine-speaker sound system with redundant audio controls on a heated leather

and wood steering wheel and memory settings for power seats and exterior heated mirrors, radio stations (AM, FM, satellite bands) and gas and brake pedals. The Limited also has pushbutton start as well as remote start. If it is hot, remotely start the Limited to turn on the air conditioning. If cold, remotely start the minivan to warm it up.

Prices start at $30,765 for a Touring model and climb to $32,195 for an S, $33,995 for a Touring L, $35,695 for a 30th Anniversary and finally $41,295 for the Limited.

All models are powered by a 3.6-liter, 283-horsepower, 24-valve V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler publicists claim it has “best in class (minivan)” horsepower.

The engine can haul seven humans in three rows of seats

as well as tow a 3,500-pound trailer. Overhead is a set of roof rails that can safely carry 150 pounds. The crossbars, when not in use, fold down into the side rails. Fuel economy usually is determined by driving habits, weather and road conditions, and weight of cargo and occupants on board. During the test week, without towing a trailer but with an average of three occupants on board, the Limited model averaged 21.4 miles per gallon of gasoline. Unleaded regular fuel is recommended for the 20-gallon tank. The Environmental Protection Agency has this minivan as averaging 25 mpg on highways, 17 mpg in the city and 20 mpg in combined usage.

This is a big minivan and it takes some skill to park. On the inside, maneuverability is key.

A console between the front seats can be removed if more

open space is required. A big alley leads from the second row bucket seats to the third row.

The third row folds into a well, manually on some models but by power on the Limited. If this third row is upright, there are 33 cubic feet of storage space for groceries or smaller items.

With the third row stored in the well and the second row seats upright, cargo space expands to 83 cubic feet. This is lots of room for a family of four to sit in the first two rows and store baggage, bicycles and other vacation items in the rear load floor.

Of course with the two rear rows stored in their wells, cargo volume is 144 cubic feet. The sides of this van are relatively straight to make storage of clumsy items easier. A 4-footby-8-foot sheet of plywood fits in nicely, for example. A refrigerator would, too. Chrysler has not succumbed to the aerodynamic curvature look for this minivan.

With wells provided for the two rows of seats one might wonder where the spare tire (a temporary) is stored. Well, it is positioned under the floor between the front bucket seats. The spare is lowered by a wrench (provided) to the ground where it can be slid out from under the vehicle and used where needed. Each minivan manufacturer has ingenious ways of storing its spare tires.

Safety features of the Limited include blind spot and cross path detection, a rear park assist system, rain sensitive windshield wipers (turn on automatically to wipe clean even if splashed with water by a passing or oncoming vehicle), rear back-up camera, stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, keyless entry, airbags in front, front sides and overhead for three rows, headrests for all seven seat belt positions and a knee airbag bolster for the driver.

Obviously, the most leg room is in front but the second row also can comfortably accommodate six-footers.

The third row is confining but easy to get to as the second row buckets flip up and out of the way via a lever.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain and 24-hour roadside assistance.

Chrysler is aware of the minivan competition but keeps its practical outlook in mind. The 2008 “Swivel ’N Go” feature is a prime example.

This arrangement of a table and two rows of seats fac-

ing each other was created with a middle row swiveling to face the rear bench row with the table folding into place between.

According to Chrysler officials, families that bought this feature never used it and, what was worse, customers had to choose between the Stow ’N Go or the Swivel ’N Go. There was not enough room in the minivan for both of them. Except for a slight percentage of buyers, Stow ’N Go was chosen.

The country’s favorite minivan remains, after 30 years, a Chrysler Group product, whether it is the Town & Country or the Dodge Grand Caravan.

In 2012, the last complete year with sales figures, Chrysler sold 205,182 of these vehicles which compared to Toyota’s 111,429 (Sienna), Honda’s 107,068 (Odyssey) and Nissan’s 12,199 (Quest).

More Content Now There’s been a longstanding tradition in Hollywood to save the big guns for the end of the year, for that brief window between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. That’s when the studios have regularly released those films that they think will have the best chances to pick up Oscar nominations because they’ll be fresh on the minds of those who nominate. This year has been a little different.

There’s already plenty of Oscar buzz out there for ... ready? ... one pick from each major category: Supporting Actress: Oprah Winfrey (“The Butler”); Supporting Actor: Michael Fassbender (“12 Years a Slave”); Actress: Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”); Actor: Robert Redford (“All Is Lost”); Director: Alexander Payne (“Nebraska”); and Picture: “12 Years a Slave.”

And there’s still the month of December ahead. Here’s a look at several of the major titles (in alphabetical order) opening over those four weeks.

There will no doubt be some nominees among them.

“American Hustle” It happened in the 1980s. An FBI sting operation that became known as ABSCAM resulted in bribery and conspiracy convictions among members of – watch out! – the House and the Senate. This fictionalized version of that story, involving conmen, Mafiosi and FBI agents focuses on Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), his partner in crime Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) and kind of crazy FBI man Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).

“Anchorman: The Legend Continues” The title says it all. Full-of-himself dim light bulb newscaster Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) moves on from the 1970s by relocating from San Diego to Manhattan, where he lands a gig at the Big Apple’s first 24-hour news channel. Original director Adam McKay returns, along with most of the original cast, and a few nicely placed big-name cameos. Hard to believe it’s been a decade since the first film.

“August: Osage County” Nothing like a good old dysfunction-

Ben Stiller stars in the film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” al family drama for your Christmas Day viewing. Meet the women who call themselves the Westons (Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis, Julianne Nicholson) and their foul-mouthed, drug-addled mom (Meryl Streep) who all get together to deal with a family crisis. Based on the hit play by Tracy Letts, early word is that the performances are excitingly and emotionally unhinged.

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” The story of Nelson Mandela’s years of imprisonment in a small cell, due to his political views, is a well-known one. But this film, with Idris Elba in the title role, and Naomie Harris taking on the part of his strong-willed wife Winnie, goes all the way back to his formative years in a rural village, and comes all the way up to his inauguration as president of South Africa.

“Saving Mr. Banks” You know that nice Disney movie “Mary Poppins,” with the flying nanny and the dancing penguins? It was based on the book by P.L. Travers, and what went on behind the real-life scenes between Disney and the author was not very nice, especially since she

didn’t want Hollywood touching her baby. Here’s that story, with Emma Thompson as the feisty Travers, and Tom Hanks as Disney.

“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” Danny Kaye played James Thurber’s fantastical daydreamer in 1947, and Ben Stiller takes on the role now.

This story goes a lot further into adventure than the original film or the book, and visual effects will be way up front in the telling of it. Kristen Wiig is the love interest, and Stiller directs for the first time since the terrific “Tropic Thunder.”

“The Wolf of Wall Street” Cast and director are certainly impressive (Leo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, and Rob Reiner, with Martin Scorsese calling the shots). But do we really need another true story about rich guys who go crooked? This one is about securities fraud in the ’90s. If you want to know how it ends, look up Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) on Google. If you don’t want to know, and you have faith in strong directing and acting, this might be something to look forward to. It also opens on busy Christmas Day.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips category. She wasn’t honest about the number of men she had been with because she knew you would react the way you have.

You say you love her, but if you truly feel embarrassed by the fact that you’re not the second man she has slept with, then you either need to change your attitude or do her a favor and think about ending your marriage.

From my perspective, the number of lovers she has had since the wedding is far more important than the number she had before.

Please be aware that many women in our society have had multiple partners, so if you’re looking to replace your wife anytime soon, you may be hard pressed to find a woman with no experience.

Dear Abby: I’m a 16-year-old guy, and I have a problem. I recently met a girl in a chat room, and we seemed to hit it off pretty well. As we’ve been talking, she

has told me she is suicidal, and in the past three days she has made three attempts to take her life.

(As I’m writing this, she is in the hospital.)

Being a sensitive person, I try to talk her out of it, but she keeps shutting me out, and once she’s OK, she is a completely different person. I still want to be her friend, but this is getting to be too much for me. Please help. – Worried In Vermont Dear Worried: You are a caring person, but you must recognize that the girl you are corresponding with is emotionally fragile.

Right now she is unable to respond to you and, frankly, you are not equipped to help her. It’s good that she is in the hospital because that is where she needs to be until she can be stabilized.

‘Normal’ body temperature can range either side of 98.6 Dear Doctor K: Even when I’m feeling fine, my body temperature is rarely 98.6 degrees. I thought that was the normal temperature.

Should I be concerned?

Dear Reader: It’s still taught to schoolchildren: Normal human body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. But people are different from one another. That’s as true of their body temperature as it is of their height, the size of their ears or the color of their hair.

What is a “normal” temperature? Researchers have measured the body temperatures of thousands of healthy people.

They’ve found that normal oral temperatures range from 97.5 to 98.9 degrees. About one in 20 people have temperatures even a bit lower or higher.

Each person’s body temperature also varies by 1 or 2 degrees over the course of the day. It reaches a low between 2 a.m. to 4 a.m., and a high 12 hours later.

There also is some inaccuracy in the way we usually take our temperature. Our mouth is a convenient place to measure our temperature. But to the body, core body temperature – the actual temperature inside

Core temperature is generally a degree or so higher than the temperature in our mouth because, for most of us, most of the time, the air we breathe in through our mouth is cooler than our core body temperature. The best way to measure our core temperature is by rectal or inner-ear measurement.

If a “normal” temperature is variable, and not just a single simple number, why do we bother to take it? Because temperature outside that normal range of 97.5 to 98.9 degrees is often an indicator of disease. If you’re not feeling well, and your temperature is 101 degrees, or 96 degrees, there’s something wrong. Your doctor has a diagnosis to make.

The most common cause of elevated body temperature is infection. Almost any infection in the body can cause fever. But there are other causes of elevated body temperature, including heat

stroke or a drug reaction.

Although it happens less often, abnormally low body temperature can indicate a condition such as an underactive thyroid. Once, I was called to see a patient with a body temperature of 95 and a heart rate of 35 (normal is 60 to 80). His thyroid was so underactive that his heart and metabolism were really slowed down.

When a person’s body temperature goes too far outside the normal range, it’s bad for the body – sometimes really bad. That’s because the cells of the body depend on a narrow temperature range for thousands of internal chemical reactions to occur properly. Severely low or high body temperature can lead to permanent organ damage, even death.

So, don’t be concerned about a body temperature that’s not exactly 98.6, so long as it’s in the normal range. And when it’s not, particularly if you are not feeling well, it’s time to call the doctor.

Dr. Wallace: I am in my first year at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. I want to get a credit card for emergencies, or to buy something special when I don’t have the cash available. All my friends have their own credit cards, and they all say that it is really handy to have it.

My parents think that credit cards teach the cardholder to buy things they don’t really need, simply because it is so easy. They tell me that most people my age can’t get a credit card because they don’t have a credit history. How difficult is it to get a credit card? I am 18 years old. – Jill, Columbus, Ohio Dear Jill: Most banks are eager to sign up potential credit card users, especially those who attend college. According to Teen Research Unlimited, 18-year-olds pump an average of $84 a week into the American economy, and two-thirds of all 18-year-olds have at least one credit card.

A credit card is a useful tool, if used properly.

However, if “binge spending” becomes addictive, a credit card can lead to financial disaster.

Credit card companies earn their money when cardholders charge to the credit limit and then make the minimum required payment.

The balance owed is then charged a high interest rate of 15 to 20 percent.

If you are not smart, you could go bust.

Talk to some of your friends who have their own credit cards and ask them how they were able to get their credit cards.

Then contact the credit card company that you feel would be in your best interest. Don’t be discouraged by rejections. Continue until you can reach your goal. You might also contact banks in Columbus in person.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Make sure you have sufficient money to pay the monthly credit card fee on time.

Dr. Wallace: I have been out with guys on double dates before, and I had a miserable time every time. If it had been with friends that I already knew, it might have been a different story, but now I just don’t want to double date.

A boy I know from church asked me out last week and I told him yes.

He called me a couple days later and said we were going to be double dating with his buddy because the girl his buddy asked out could only go out on double dates.

When I told this guy that I “don’t do double dates,” he got upset and wanted to know what I had against going on a date with another couple. I told him I had done that before and didn’t like to double date. He said I would like this couple and that it would be fun, but I still told him I wouldn’t go.

At church today, this guy wouldn’t even look at me or speak to me. Somehow I got the feeling that he was very perturbed with me. Did I do something wrong to deserve this kind of “cold shoulder” treatment from him? – Nameless, Goshen, Ind. Dear Nameless: You did nothing wrong. He probably was trying to help his friend out with a “double-date rule.” If this young man really wants to go out with you, he will probably ask you out again, and will assure you that nobody else will tag along.

Dear Abby: This is my wife’s second marriage. When we were dating, she led me to believe that I was the second sexual partner she had ever had. Shortly after our wedding, I found out through some mutual acquaintances that she had been very promiscuous during her college years and that the number of men she has been with is far greater than two.

The Rueful Rabbit is a poor player who always lands on his feet. This deal is a typical example. North has a problem over two no-trump. He might pass; or he could respond three clubs, Stayman, planning on either bidding four hearts if a 4-4 fit is disclosed, or settling for three notrump and hoping the diamonds run.

In this auction, North-South had agreed to use transfer bids, but North forgot. So he assumed South’s three-heart rebid indicated length in that suit.

Against four hearts, West led the spade king (luckily not a trump). The Rueful Rabbit ruffed in the dummy, played a diamond to his ace, trumped another spade, returned to the diamond king, ruffed a third spade, and took two club tricks ending on the board.

After a brief pause, R.R. trumped a diamond with his heart jack. West had to discard a spade. Then a fourth spade ruff was followed by another diamond. With this coup en passant, East could not stop South from scoring his heart king. Four hearts bid and made!
