GENEVA – Mary O’Brien, the chief executive officer of the Fox Valley Orthopedics Institute for 28 years, was named as the Geneva Chamber of Commerce 2014 Wood Award Thursday at Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva.

“She represents the very best in Geneva,” chamber board of directors president Scott Lebin said.

O’Brien was recognized for volunteering countless hours to both St. Charles and Geneva Rotary clubs, including serving as president for both.

O’Brien also served as a board member for TriCity Family Services in Geneva and Elgin Community College, as President of American Association of Orthopedic Executives and was one of the first women in the country to serve as president for a USGA Golf Club – Eagle Brook Country Club.

Several community members praised O’Brien in a prepared video, including chamber board member Gordon Hard.

Hard said he knew O’Brien through the local Rotary club, where she “perpetuated the international motto of our club, ‘Service above self.’ ” “She impressed me initially with her dedication to helping us try to accomplish

20 practitioners.

More development, redevelopment on horizon

Campton Hills aims to train 200 volunteers

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – New development and redevelopment are on the city’s horizon, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Thursday during the annual Batavia Chamber of Commerce m a y o r ’ s breakfast.

“I’m very excited by the Jeff Schielke momentum and excitement,” Schielke said to those attending the breakfast. Schielke, who is in his ninth term as Batavia mayor, is the longest serving mayor in Kane County and in

Batavia’s history.

One of the projects Schielke discussed is a “major upgrade and remodeling” of the Sam’s Club at 501 N. Randall Road, he said. The store will remain open during the work, he said.

Sam’s Club is a membership-only warehouse club owned by Walmart. Last year, the Walmart store at 801 N. Randall Road in Batavia expanded to become a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

“They have made a major commitment to Batavia,” Schielke said.

In addition, Wendy’s restaurant at 1905 W. Wilson St. also will be redesigned, Schielke said. Plan commissioners earlier this month

reviewed the plans, which include a new entrance vestibule, new exterior finish and new signs.

There also will be development happening in downtown Batavia next year, Schielke said, including the construction of a new Walgreens store and planned streetscape improvements to Houston Street.

Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey said the new Walgreens store could open by October 2015, if the project starts this year.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same

shopping center.

Schielke noted the streetscape improvements along River Street have garnered five awards. He acknowledged, however, not everyone was pleased with the arch that was installed at the entrance to River Street as part of the streetscape improvements.

“At the end of the day, I’m pleased we did the project,” Schielke said. “It is an example of what can be done to further enhance the downtown.”

And Schielke believes River Street could be further developed in the future.

“It is one of the very few places in the area that has great river frontage,” Schielke said. “We kind of set the stage for that to happen.”

CAMPTON HILLS – The village of Campton Hills aims to train 200 emergency outreach volunteers by Dec. 31. A 45-minute recorded webinar has been uploaded to the Emergency Preparedness page on the village’s website, www.villageofcamptonhills.org. Following the webinar, participants will be asked to complete a survey indicating how they would be willing to assist the village during an emergency.

Batavia School District 101 tax levy to increase Some homeowners to see slight boost in taxes

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The owner of a home valued at $243,990 will see his or her Batavia School District 101 tax bill increase by $38 as a result of the district’s proposed $74 million tax levy.

School board members discussed the levy Thursday during a board finance committee meeting. Board members are set to vote on

the levy Tuesday at a regular board meeting.

The levy request is a 2.7 percent increase over last year’s $72 million extension, which is the actual dollar amount billed to property taxpayers in the district as determined by the county clerk.

At $44.2 million, the district’s education fund comprises the brunt of the proposed tax levy.

for Finance Kris Monn told board members the best projection at the time is that the average residential tax bill will increase by 0.78 percent next year, or $38.

The average residential property in the district is currently projected at a value of $243,990.

Monn said the school district’s tax rate is the second lowest among school districts in Kane County. Board member Jon Gaspar had

questions about the levy request.

“Is there anything less we can ask for and still maintain what we have?” he asked. “I want to make sure we’re not taking money to have extra. I just want to keep status quo.”

Board member Gregg Hodge said if the district was to lower the levy and ask for less, “you lose ground.”

Board member Jason Stoops said the district “is not in an environment where everything stays static and remains the same,” pointing to unexpected maintenance costs that come up.

DETERIORATING DAM Municipalities along Fox River talk about possible removal of dams

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com As Batavia’s century-old dam continues to deteriorate, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke believes the city must soon take action on what to do with the dam.

Schielke is concerned about the effect removing the dam – located near the Batavia Riverwalk in downtown Batavia – will have on the nearby Depot Pond.

“The No. 1 thing I will certainly be working for is to take the necessary steps to secure the presence and the ongoing feature of the Depot Pond in downtown Batavia,” Schielke said. “It’s one of the crown jewels of Batavia, and I think we need to do what we need to do to protect that.

And I think that certainly can be done without the dam there.”

Officials from across the region are discussing what to do with the dams in their respective communities.

Representatives from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources spoke to local officials during a Metro West Council of Government meeting on Sept. 25 about the state’s efforts to remove dams to improve water quality, aquatic habitat and recreational safety.

Schielke said the decision on what to do with the Batavia dam needs to be made sooner rather than later, before more of the dam washes away on its own.

“And that will be a bigger problem because then suddenly we’ll have this big breach in the dam that will immediately drain the Depot Pond and we’ll have a big mud slab laying there and there will be nobody happy about that,” Schielke said.

Batavia city officials are taking another look at what to do to with a crumbling dam just north of the Batavia Riverwalk in downtown Batavia. The dam was built a century ago by the Challenge Windmill Company.

Batavia Administrator Bill McGrath has said state officials will not come and take a dam down if the community doesn’t want them to take it down.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said the city of Geneva invited the IDNR to speak at the Metro West meeting to renew discussions on what should happen to the dams along the Fox River. In April, a 26-year-old Bloomington man drowned after his two-person kayak fell over a dam in Geneva.

The man had became caught in the boil in front of the dam, Geneva fire officials had said. But Burns said the issue is larger than just safety.

“It’s really about our constant focus and discussion

about how we can make the shores of the Fox River an economic engine,” Burns said. “To do so, we have to ensure that the waterway itself is something that can be utilized in a safe manner.

There’s evidence that exists that removing dams is a wholesale benefit.”

Burns said there is a program under the IDNR to remove dams and that area municipalities should examine the program to possibly take advantage of the resources available to them. He estimated that removing the Geneva dam could cost upward of $2 million.

As a result of the Sept. 25 meeting, area mayors have formed a group to discuss and review opportunities for the dams along the Fox River. Burns said he believes the

communities must work cooperatively on the issue.

“Because if one community chooses, let’s say, option A, whether or not that has an impact on communities downstream or upstream needs to be investigated certainly,” Burns said. “And I think that it is in everybody’s best interests to move forward in a collaborative way so that the entire Fox River can benefit environmentally while all those communities up and down the Fox River can benefit economically and recreationally.”

St. Charles officials also are looking at the city’s dam as part of the Active River Project. That project aims to enhance recreation and economic opportunities on the Fox River while also improving water quality. The city of

St. Charles, the St. Charles Park District and the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles are working on the project.

“I think we as an organization like the fact that we have a pool of water upstream from the dam,” St. Charles City Administrator Mark Koenen said. “It provides recreation for boating and water skiing and all of that sort of thing. But there are probably ways to maintain that pool of water without having the dam.”

Koenen said the St. Charles dam is in reasonably good condition.

“I know that it has been inspected in the last five years or something,” he said.

“There was no immediate concern about its structure.

So, we’re in a little different position than some of our neighboring communities.”

North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said he believes removing the dam in North Aurora would improve safety. A teenager drowned trying to go over the North Aurora dam in the 1990s.

“It is more of an attractive nuisance then anything else, I guess,” Berman said. “But the state is going to wait and see what each of the communities want to do.”

At the same time, he said the village in the past few years has been working to beautify the village’s riverfront. A group known as the North Aurora River District Alliance in 2012 completed a project to build an interactive stream along the village’s riverfront.

“Obviously whatever happens, with or without the dam, we want to make the riverfront more important to us,” Berman said. “We want to make it a positive thing.

It is easier to decrease a rate than increase it, he said.

GENEVA – Participants in the county’s electric aggregation program will likely pay about $2 a year for administrative costs.

County leaders hope those dollars will result in substantial savings for residents, but it remains to be seen just how much electric bills might drop.

Members of the Energy and Environmental Committee on Thursday said the program won’t be worthwhile if it saves participants a minuscule amount, such as 50 cents a year.

“Is $5 a month enough?”

Deborah Allan, D-Elgin, asked.

“This committee will have to make that judgment call,” Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said.

The committee should soon have more information to work with.

The county is closer to seeking prices from electrical suppliers now that the County Board has chosen the Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Collaborative as a consultant for the program.

Ken Anderson, director of the county’s division of environmental and water resources, said the turnaround is usually seven to 10 days.

The committee recommended approval of a resolution giving Board Chairman Chris Lauzen the ability to award a contract with a supplier. Agenda documents indicate it is important for the county to respond quickly because quoted prices hold for about a day because of the fluctuation in the electrical supply market.

ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles recently received the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency President & CEO’s Municipality of the Year award, according to a news release.

St. Charles City Administrator Mark Koenen and Electric Services Manager Tom Bruhl accepted the award at the agency’s annual meeting and awards banquet last month in Springfield.

The award recognizes St. Charles’ commitment to reliable and innovative service to its electric customers, according to the news release.

The St. Charles Electric Department serves more than 15,500 homes and businesses in the community.

The city utility is a member of the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency, which is made up of 32 municipal electric systems and one rural electric cooperative.

Its primary function is to provide wholesale electricity to its members, which they – in turn – supply to their communities’ homes and businesses, the release

Gaden noted that St. Charles devotes significant resources to its reliability and customer service efforts and that the utility’s reliability index performance is in the top quartile. Since 2009, the city has tapped into more than $340,000 available from the agency to provide incentives for 21 projects that helped private-sector, commercial-industrial customers become more energy efficient.

St. Charles also secured funding from the agency to improve electric efficiency at city facilities.

Earlier this year, St. Charles initiated a systemwide modeling study of its entire electric system to further optimize system performance, maximize employee safety and reduce the risk of electrical accidents and injuries.

Man sets $10K goal for charity calendar

McMahon said he draws because he always has ideas and can visualize their ridiculous nature. One year he decided to try to do a calendar in the vein of The Far Side comics and then thought someone should benefit from it. He approached his friend, Lazarus House founder Darlene Marcusson, about the idea, and the rest is history.

The first year of the calendar raised about $2,000 for Lazarus House; the project has grown to an annual donation between $7,000 and $8,000, McMahon said.

Lazarus House is grateful for all of McMahon’s past and present contributions, said Julie Purcell, Lazarus House administrative coordinator and grant writer. McMahon Builders completed Lazarus House’s second addition.

“His commitment to helping those in need is such a gift to us,” Purcell said.

A Geneva man hopes his 2015 calendar of drawings can raise at least $10,000 this year for Lazarus House in St. Charles.

Joe McMahon this year completed his eighth edition of the Joman Calendar, which contains his own hand drawings and humorous captions.

Because his company, McMahon Builders, covers the cost of producing the calendar, all of the proceeds go to Lazarus House, a nonprofit charitable organization serving people who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. But donations are accepted, with donors being asked to send contributions directly to Lazarus House, 214 Walnut St., St. Charles, using an pre-addressed envelope included with the calendar, McMahon said.

With a $20 minimum donation per calendar and a planned run of 350 calendars this year – up from 300 – McMahon is counting on some generous donors to reach his goal.

Regulate the Internet as if living depended on it

By KATIE BENNER Bloomberg News Most Americans can’t imagine life without the Internet. They go online to work, to communicate and to get news about the world. If the technorati in Silicon Valley have their way, health care, education and transportation (hello Uber!) will depend on a reliable, fast connection to the Internet, too, through wearable devices, tablets and mobile phones.

Even without the current debate about net neutrality – that wonky fight over Internet broadband speeds – it seems inevitable we’ll decide Internet access is as essential to civilized life as running water, electricity and phone calls.

When that realization hits,

it should follow that the Internet service providers – companies such as Comcast and Time Warner Cable now, and likely a company like Google in the future – will be regulated like utilities. They should be held to a different standard if they provide services that are essential to daily life.

But corporations never have been ones to bend over backward and accept oversight, even if it’s for the common good. The Internet service providers are no different.

The regulation battle is being waged around net neutrality, the idea that big companies such as Comcast shouldn’t be allowed to call the shots when it comes to what we can read and watch online. President Barack Obama recently said the only

way to ensure net neutrality is to regulate the service providers like utilities; the cable companies, as expected, have enlisted powerful political allies to shoot down that idea.

There’s a non-ideological argument that is used against net neutrality that goes like this: The Comcasts of the world should be allowed to pick content winners and losers because it’s the only way to guarantee they will have incentives to be innovative and improve their services. The logical leap here is a strange one: If broadband carriers can create an uneven playing field for content providers, they will be likely to create better technology and services for consumers.

But the true fight is an ideological one: It’s about

whether you believe regulation never is acceptable and that it is always a matter of government overreach.

That was the point of Sen. Ted Cruz’s much-maligned tweet about Obama’s net-neutrality statement. When the Texas Republican compared regulation of cable companies to Obamacare, it was a shorthand way to say it is all a version of too much government, even though regulating companies clearly is not the same as creating an insurance marketplace that might actually enrich big insurers and create more customers.

Lost in the rancor, of course, is reality that being regulated as a utility hasn’t done much to harm the fortunes of the utilities companies themselves. More to the

point, government oversight has created some profitable publicly traded companies that richly reward investors.

Power, water and phone companies historically have been havens for investors during economic downturns.

During a recession, people still use their utilities and find ways to pay their bills.

No matter how the fight on net neutrality turns out, someday we’ll decide Internet service providers sell a product that’s not an option like cable TV, but an essential service. Let’s remember these companies always will do well, whether or not they are regulated, but that the same can’t be said for their customers.

Vikings’ ‘D’ recalibrates for Trojans Triple-option attack to test Vikings’ unit

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva senior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina occasionally mimicked Cary-Grove counterpart Jason Gregoire during the full-team stages of Vikings football practice this week.

Santacaterina gave himself a passing grade for his ability to at least partially channel the Trojans’ triple-option attack. His teammates on the defensive line must be far more impeccable in their own bids to change character.

A defensive turnaround has helped vault the 10-1 Vikings to their first Class 7A quarterfinal in six years. Geneva’s visit to top-seeded Cary-Grove (11-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday will test its personnel in multiple ways, but especially up front, where skilled pass rushers Matt Loberg (nine sacks) and Steve Kemp (five) prepare for a run-happy scheme.

“Everyone’s got to take their gap and be responsible for it,” Loberg said. “We’ve been watching a lot of film.

We know what they’re going to come at us with, so we’ve just got to be responsible and do our job and not try to do too much and trust our teammates.”

Gap-soundness won’t soon whet the appetites of Vikings fans hankering for defensive fireworks, but it would go a long way toward something more satisfying in the longterm – pulling off the upset.

Cary-Grove has not trailed at any point this season. Class 8A foe Huntley drew to within 12-7 on a third-quarter touchdown in Week 5 before ultimately scuffling to a 42-14 loss.

“Creating chaos,” as Vikings coach Rob Wicinski calls it, will take a sterling effort. As the Vikings prepare to deliver one, they strive to keep it simple and go from there.

The X-factor Cary-Grove hasn’t trailed this season, and its first-team defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown since a Week 6 victory against McHenry. The Trojans’ tightest margin of victory – 10 points against Wheaton North in the season opener – was the product of a late Falcons flurry.

The Trojans would just as soon not get snug with the Vikings, but if they do, the senior-heavy team won’t be alarmed, Seaburg said.

“Our guys have been there,” Seaburg said. “This year, we didn’t have as many close games for the guys, but I think our guys have competed enough to have what it takes to win a close game.”

Would picking the Vikings have been so brazen? If Geneva’s offense can harness its size and speed and the defense stays gap-sound, this one could be close down the stretch.

Cary-Grove sweats things out before pulling through thanks to its consistent schemes and late adjustments. There’s lots of cap-tipping at the end, both ways.

Fox Valley Hawks surge to strong start

editorial@kcchronicle.com The Fox Valley Hawks hockey team is reveling in a hot start to the season.

With an overall record of 8-4-1, the team is undefeated in the Illinois Suburban Hockey League second division. It has scored 44 goals while only giving up 10 on the year.

“We expect we will be moved up to the upper division of the league, which I think is great.” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “Don’t get me wrong. My concern is doing it night in and night out with only 13 skaters on this team, how will we hold up against teams like Addison Trail/Willowbrook/Fenton and Lemont and Guerin/Nazareth. The kids are going to find out very soon how tough things will get for them. They think they are ready, and I think they are as well.”

Gabrielsen can’t complain about the performance senior right wing Dillon George (St. Charles East), who has 11 goals and seven assists for a total of 18 points through 13 games, and junior goaltender Aaron Karkos (Batavia), who sports a goalsagainst average of 1 in league play.

Team captain Trevor Kurtzhals has 10 goals and six assists, and the assist leader on the Hawks, Josh Gadow, has eight assists to go along with his six goals.

“I thought coming into this year, we would be a pretty decent team because of the players we had,” George said. “I think, though, the

team bonding we have had this year has really been huge for us. We all just get along so well. We are a family.”

Even if the family is composed of athletes from St. Charles East, North, Geneva and Batavia who don’t like each other when it comes to athletic competition in other sports such as football, soccer, basketball, water polo, baseball and softball.

“In the locker room, it does not matter,” George said.

“We are a family and we have bonded so well together.”

The club has overcome several obstacles to be successful so far this year, from having practice sessions at Jet Hockey in St. Charles on a small rink to a few practice sessions at Fox Valley Ice Arena and few home games.

“Our next game is Sunday at 5 p.m. against Leyden,” Gabrielsen said. “While the game is at Addison, it’s our home game.”

Despite the lack of true home games, the team is impressed with its fan support so far.

Not only does he lead the team in scoring, but George and senior captain Scott Sokniewicz (St. Charles East) also take a certain amount of pride in getting the word out at school about the club.

“I actually like playing in front of a big crowd, including my friends and family,” said Sokniewicz, a threeyear starter on the team. “It actually helps me focus on my game more and what I need to do out on the ice and go harder on every single shift.”

Cutler: Better focus, hot start will help regain confidence

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – “Confidence” was the topic du jour Thursday at Halas Hall as Jay Cutler, Aaron Kromer and Co. fielded questions in response to Brandon Marshall earlier this week on “Inside the NFL” saying, “When you lose your confidence, it’s over. … And right now, that’s where we’re at.”

Ranked No. 22 in the NFL in scoring, averaging more than a touchdown less a game than last year’s No. 2 scoring unit, the Bears didn’t exactly shy away from Marshall’s comments.

First up at the podium, Kromer said the Bears lately have too often allowed one bad play early to become a chain of poor plays, but all it takes is one spark to flip the script.

For that to happen, Kromer explained, all 11 players must show better focus on their specific assignment on each play.

He mentioned pre-snap penalties, missed blocks and bad throws – all putting the Bears behind the chains – as byproducts of lacking focus.

“When we stub our toe on the first drive, and then we’re down, we got to just focus. … Success will breed success, and it doesn’t take more than one play,” Kromer said.

Slow starts have plagued the Bears amid their current

slide – they have totaled seven first-half points in the past three games. Cutler knows a hot start Sunday at Soldier Field, where the support of fans has waned, is needed to avoid hearing the boo birds.

“I think we’ve got to start fast,” Cutler said. “We can’t blame them if we don’t start fast and we get … some boos there. Guys understand that.

We know we haven’t played as well as we should play, especially at home, so we’ve got to do better for our fans.”

Cutler admitted he also has to do better to help restore confidence in the huddle on Sundays and during the practice week.

From having better energy during the week to being more vocal in the huddle, every possible solution must be exhausted.

Cutler said the return of reciever Marquess Wilson, perhaps as soon as Sunday, would provide “a little bit of a boost for us.” But he and Kromer agreed a boost from receiver Alshon Jeffery is critical.

Jeffery has only two 100-yard games and none since Week 6, after surpassing 200 yards twice last year and finishing fourth in the NFL in yardage.

“He’s kind of been a bit lost the last couple of games – we haven’t utilized him as much as we want to,” Cutler said. “…

That’s just kind of everybody right now.”

Real estate office makes donation to Sunshine Kids Foundation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Berkshire Hathaway Starck Real Estate donated more than $17,000 to the Sunshine Kids Foundation to continue its mission of enriching the lives of young cancer patients, according to a news release.

The second annual fundraiser for Sunshine Kids was a combination golf outing and dinner at Randall Oaks Golf Club in West Dundee on Sept.

10. In addition to the cost of attending, funds were generated through silent auctions, raffles and a helicopter golf-ball drop, the release states.

There were about 140 golfers at the Berkshire Hathaway Starck Real Estate golf outing, and 225 people attended the dinner that evening, states the release.

“We thought we had a very successful event last year,” committee chair and Senior Vice President Tom Stengren said in the release. “And this year we raised twice as much! It’s for a great cause.”

According to the release, the goal of Sunshine Kids is to provide free activities that combine fun with an emphasis on personal accomplishment

Dear Abby: Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I would like to share some advice with your readers from someone who has volunteered in shelters for many years.

1. Please do NOT volunteer on Thanksgiving. It’s the day most people volunteer, and there are always more volunteers than homeless people.

2. If you want to make donations, please drop them off a few days before or a few days after. It will allow the shelter time to store all the donations and to take an inventory of what is still needed.

3. Shelters need not only food, but also paper goods such as plates, napkins, toilet paper and plastic utensils.

4. Because refrigerator space is limited, don’t bring anything that must be refrigerated.

5. Most shelters pay rent,

New statin guidelines recognize their expanded benefits Dear Doctor K: My doctor never recommended statins to me, but he says there are new guidelines, and thinks that I should now start taking one. What do you think of the new statin guidelines?

Dear Reader: The new guidelines make a lot of sense, because we’ve learned that statins have more effects on the body than just lowering cholesterol.

Statins were developed after a Nobel Prize-winning discovery in the 1970s revealed how the body makes cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in our body is made by our body, not consumed in our food.

Statins slow the production of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by the body.

In the 1980s, studies showed that statins dramatically lowered blood levels of LDL cholesterol and also lowered the risk of heart attack. At first, we assumed that the lower risk of heart attack was entirely explained by the lower cholesterol. That’s because we knew that people with high LDL cholesterol in their blood had higher rates of heart attack.

But then a large study conducted at Harvard Medical School found that statins profoundly lower the risk of heart attack, even in people with normal total and LDL cholesterol levels.

That’s because statins do more

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff than just lower cholesterol. Heart attacks occur when cholesterol-filled plaques in the heart’s arteries rupture, causing a clot that blocks blood from getting to the heart. Inflammation inside the plaques causes them to rupture – and statins reduce inflammation.

This realization changed the way doctors think about statins.

If statins lower the risk of heart attack even in people with normal cholesterol levels, then we should give them to people at high risk for heart attack – regardless of their cholesterol level.

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology issued new statin-prescribing guidelines in November 2013. Until then, doctors prescribed statins to reach specific cholesterol goals or targets.

Instead, the new guidelines ask doctors to prescribe statins based on a patient’s overall heart and artery disease risk.

Specifically, the new guidelines recommend that patients in any of the following groups be treated with a statin:

• People who already have heart or artery disease; • People with very high levels of LDL cholesterol (190 mg/dL or higher); • Anyone between the ages of 40 and 75 who has Type 2 diabetes; • Adults ages 40 to 75 years who have a heart disease or stroke risk of 7.5 percent or greater in the next 10 years. You can get a sense of your risk by using the AHA’s risk assessment tool at: heart.org/gglRisk/main_en_US.html.

Of course, all drugs have some risk. Statins can cause muscle cramps and, rarely, more serious muscle injury and liver problems.

It’s a matter of balancing your personal risks and benefits. For most people covered by the new guidelines, I believe the benefits of statins are greater than the risks.

Although I don’t know the specifics in your case, I’ll bet the reason your doctor now is recommending statins is that you are at high risk for heart disease, even though your cholesterol levels are not particularly high. If so, I would agree.

Grandma is a witch Dr. Wallace: My grandmother (mom’s mother) has come to live with us because her second husband died recently. She and her first husband, my grandfather, have been divorced for over 12 years. My grandfather never remarried and lives alone. He has two bedrooms so he told my grandmother she could live with him, but she said no.

Ever since she moved in with us our house is always in turmoil. She is highly opinionated, vocal and dominating.

She blasts my mom, dad, brother and even annoys our beautiful, loyal dog!

Because she is such a witch, I refuse to bring any of my friends to our house because I’m afraid she’ll say something to embarrass them.

I wish there was a place where single grandparents could go to meet other singles their age. Typical grandparents are welcome, useful, loving members of extended families.

There may be reasons why your grandmother is unable to get a place of her own, but at the very least a family discussion on respecting one another’s basic rights is in order.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and live alone with my mother. She is a good mom and I love her, but I don’t approve of what she is planning to do. Mom is dating a guy who works with her and they are planning to get married in late December (to save on income tax).

Dr. Wallace: I think your facts about the evils of smoking are a bit selective. Yes, smoking has been linked to lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease, as well as wrinkles, hypertension and a host of other ills.

However, it should be noted that nicotine is an appetite suppressant, a pain reliever and has recently been shown to stimulate cartilage growth, so the nicotine in cigarettes does have its own medicinal properties. – Todd, Indianapolis, Indiana Dear Todd: I am not aware of the medicinal properties in nicotine.

But even if what you say is fact, the negatives far outweigh the positives.

However, players at the table make more mistakes, because they have limited time for analysis.

Even then, finding the guilty party might not be easy. In today’s deal, who was responsible for letting four spades make?

West led the club ace, and East dropped the nine, starting a high-low with his doubleton. West cashed the club king and continued with the club queen, on which East discarded the diamond three. Now, though, West shifted to a heart.

South won with his ace, played a spade to dummy’s ace, overtook the spade queen with his king, drew the rest of East’s trumps and ran the hearts to eliminate his diamond loser.

East pointed out that he had pitched his higher diamond spot, asking for a switch to that suit.

West replied that the three did not look high. Why hadn’t East thrown the heart six? West would have known that was low because East had to have higher hearts available.
