As the daughter of a proud, but quiet, veteran and patriot, I always enjoy the Veterans Day ceremonies I have the privilege of attending and covering for the newspaper.

Wednesday morning I was at Geneva Middle School North

for a Veterans Day ceremony, where I noticed seventh-grader Gracie Spillone as she carefully held a small American flag while seated with her class.

Her teacher said Gracie had found the flag while on her way to the bus that morning. It was

Geneva chamber names Wood Award recipient GENEVA – At its annual dinner Thursday night, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce bestowed its most prestigious award of the year to Gordon “Gordie” Hard, an insurance man whose volunteerism has been felt throughout the community.

In a chamber news release, his wife stated he “genuinely enjoys” helping people in the community.

“Through hard work and tenacity he has been very blessed and is always looking for a way to give back,” Kathleen Hard stated. “He is willing to volunteer for whatever he can, whenever he can.”

Gordon Hard received the Wood Award, which recognizes those who have made significant community contributions in business, education, youth involvement, civic organizations, art, recreation, charity or government.

“You got me,” Gordon Hard told those gathered at Eagle Brook Country Club after a lengthy introduction.

Gordon Hard is the owner and president of the Valley Insurance Agency in Geneva and a longtime member of the chamber’s Board of Directors, for which he served as chairman from 1988 to 1998.

He also has held leadership positions with the Rotary Club of Geneva, which he joined in 1984.

Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines described Gordon Hard as one of the most positive people she knows.

“He is committed to the groups he supports, like the chamber and Rotary, and his enthusiasm never seems to waiver,” Gaines stated in a news release.

“We appreciate his support, his sense of humor and his easy laugh. He has made quiet contributions to the success of the chamber, and he is always open to a new idea.”

The chamber also honored Martha Sanchez of State Street Jewelers, who was named the Geneva Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year.

She was described as a conscientious, dedicated and generous employee and credited for her creative and progressive thinking.

The 2014 Member of the Year recipient, Lisa Nelson, introduced Sanchez.

“With a positive attitude that is contagious, she understands that chamber membership is not merely about promoting her own business,”

Nelson said. “Rather, it benefits the business community as a whole.”

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Repeatedly delivering a message that teachers at Kaneland School District 302 are hoping to avoid a strike, representatives from the Kaneland Education Association held a public forum Thursday night at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

It has been about a week since the KEA announced its members “voted overwhelmingly in favor of moving forward with an intent to strike.” On Monday, Kaneland’s school board revealed details of its latest contract offer to the KEA. At Thursday’s forum, KEA representatives said it would not be appropriate to announce specifics of the KEA’s offer. But they said the sides are about $500,000 apart on the deal.

The KEA’s chief negotiator, Susan Acksel, said she was “very, very hopeful” a deal could be reached. Those attending the forum immediately were greeted by information provided from a projector on a screen that noted “Teachers are NOT going on strike in 10 days.” Acksel stressed announcing the intent to strike was the beginning of a process. The KEA stated a strike could not occur until mid-December or early January, at the earliest.

The school board Monday issued a news release that the district’s most recent offer would add about $3 million of additional money to teachers’ salary schedule over the next three years, adding that would translate to more than a 16 percent increase in salary over the life of the proposed three-year contract, or about 5 percent each year.

At the forum, those in attendance were able to write down questions on index cards, with members of the negotiating team providing answers.

When asked how teachers could turn down 5 percent raises when others in the community were fortunate to receive 2 percent raises, those in the KEA focused on attempts to retain teachers and ultimately boost Kaneland’s base salary. One slide shown at the forum included information that Kaneland stands 13th out of a 14-district sample in that category, with a base salary of $37,210, ahead

of only Huntley. Others on the list included areas, such as Geneva, Burlington, Sycamore, Naperville, St. Charles and Batavia.

KEA representatives drove home several key negotiating points. Among them:

• The KEA believes the district has a healthy fund balance and would be able to handle what the KEA is seeking. It showed a slide that stated the district’s education fund balance is more than $13.39 million. It stated

that fund was at a little more than $6.01 million as recently as 2010.

• The KEA stated that it presented a “supposal” that would raise the base salary to $39,599 in the first year of a three-year contract. It stated the district’s plan would have the base salary to about $39,000 by the third year of the deal.

“We do not want our district to be a training ground,” Acksel said.

Lori Shroka, the KEA’s president, said “retention is just a huge issue for us right now.”

• The KEA stated during more than two years of salary freezes teachers endured, the district continued to add to its education fund.

“The district is very financially healthy,” Acksel said.

BATAVIA – Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke on Thursday gave a hearty update on the commercial activity happening in the city.

Schielke’s one-hour presentation was the core of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce Annual Mayor’s Breakfast at Lincoln Inn Banquets in Batavia. About 150 people attended the event.

Among the news Schielke shared in his presentation was the owners of the Shell gas station at Houston Street and Route 31 have applied to open a Dunkin’ Donuts location with a drive-thru window on the south side of the building.

It will be somewhat controversial – there will be hearings

in front of the city’s Plan Commission, Schielke said.

Schielke also announced construction on Houston Street in downtown was complete and the street might be open by this weekend.

A new central distribution center for Comcast is going to move into the Shoppes At Windmill Place on Randall Road on the city’s west side.

The location will serve Kane and Kendall counties, Schielke said.

Another of Schielke’s Randall Road updates was Bradford Real Estate Companies will have an option to buy the Avenue Chevy property.

The new Batavia Walgreens in downtown Batavia will open sometime in the spring.

Police: Charges not likely in Batavia barricade incident

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A man who barricaded himself inside a Batavia home Tuesday likely will not face any charges stemming from the incident, according to police. The man probably will not face charges, but a final decision had not been made as of Thursday afternoon, Batavia Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said.

Police were first dispatched at 11:48 a.m. Tuesday to a home in the 800 block of Roberts Lane in Batavia for a report of a despondent male subject who reportedly was threatening to harm himself.

The man was taken into protective custody at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and taken to a local hospital, according to police.

Mazza said to his knowledge, the Batavia Police Department had not had any previous contact with the man.

Batavia police officials made the decision to request assistance during the incident from the Kane County Regional SWAT team based on information the man had access to a number of firearms, Mazza said.

Investigators will talk to the man’s family about giving police temporary custody of the firearms or having a family member living in another residence take possession of the firearms, Mazza said.

Many residents this week praised Batavia police, the SWAT team and Batavia Public School District 101 officials for their response to the incident.

Alice Gustafson Elementary School and Batavia High School were placed on a soft lockdown in which no one was allowed in or out of the schools for about four hours Tuesday as a precaution.

“It was a tough situation to be involved in,” Mazza said.

“We’re extremely thankful that no one got hurt.”

GERALDINE F. STANFORD Born: Feb. 23, 1925; in Brainerd, MN Died: Nov. 8, 2015; in St. Charles, IL

Geraldine F. Stanford, age 90, a resident of St. Charles for 40 years, went to be with the Lord, on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, peacefully at home. She was born Feb. 23, 1925, to Clyde Howard and Alice Marie, nee Bakkela, Bedal. They lived in Brainerd, Minnesota while Gerry attended schools in northeast Brainerd and southeast Brainerd.

Gerry graduated from Washington Senior High School, where she was awarded the Josten Award for good citizenship. She played the viola in the orchestra, wrote for the Brainonian Newspaper weekly, edited the Brainonian annual yearbook and played piano accompaniment for the Washington Senior High School Choir. Gerry was a senior in high school when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Most of her classmates joined the armed forces.

No one from the class was lost in service.

Gerry traveled to Pasadena, California to help her aunt Helen Quinlen whose husband was lost in the Philippines. While Helen worked at the defense plant, Gerry cared for her three children. While in Pasadena, Gerry attended Pasadena Junior College, East Campus. After two years she met Ralph H. Stanford who attended the West Campus.

During his second year, Ralph was called into the U.S. Army. He went from the Air Force to the Medical Corps. When he was informed that he was going overseas, Ralph asked Gerry to marry him. They were married on June 4, 1944 by Dr. J. Vernon McGee. After moving to St. Charles, Gerry worked for 20 years as an English Teacher at Geneva High School. She was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and the Delta

Kappa Gamma teachers association.

She and Ralph were active members of the Wheaton Evangelical Free Church, where she was a deaconess, played the organ and piano, and was a member of the Kupples Klass.

They enjoyed travel and traveled to Austria, Italy, Spain, Finland, Milan, Amsterdam, Paris, Alaska, Australia, Turkey, Greece, and Switzerland.

Gerry loved to play the piano and enjoyed writing. She prayed daily for many people and was outgoing and cared for her neighbors. She enjoyed interior decorating and making her home a beautiful place.

Her favorite verse was Colossians 1:10-11: And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

She is survived by her daughters, Meredith (Kent) Stanford-Pollock of Bolton, Massachusetts and Roberta Stanford of St. Charles; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; and one sister, Margery Collins.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015 from 10:00 until the time of a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Compass Church in Wheaton (Wheaton Evangelical Free Church), 520 E. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton, IL 60187. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in St. Charles, Illinois.

PENNY SUE WELCH

Born: May 1, 1954; in Chicago, IL Died: Nov. 9, 2015; in Naperville, IL Penny Sue Welch, age 61, of Sugar Grove, went to her heavenly home on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at Seasons Hospice in Naperville. She was born May 1, 1954, in Chicago, the daughter of LeRoy and Eileen (Sibert) Vacovsky.

As an 8 year old child, Penny was introduced to and accepted a relationship with Jesus Christ and her dependence was on the Holy Spirit to guide her life. She grew to be a woman of God, loving others as Christ loved her, developing a deep prayer life and sharing the love of Jesus with others.

Penny felt her calling was to serve others in many ways. She had a wonderful gift of encouragement throughout her life, and constantly held others up through her prayer and her kind words. Penny was a nurse for 30 years, and was employed by Copley Hospital, Provena Mercy Hospital, Batavia High School, The Visiting Nurses Association and lastly by Central DuPage Hospital.

Penny received her nursing degree through Waubonsee Community College, and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of St. Francis. Penny viewed nursing as her ministry rather than her job.

Penny was an active member of First Baptist Church of Geneva, and was involved in Women’s Bible Studies. Penny was also an active member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). Throughout her involvement in these ministries, she developed

close relationships with other ladies, and was able to invest her life into those relationships through her encouragement, prayer and support.

Penny’s greatest ministry was to her family. She loved her family with her whole heart, and was deeply committed to serving them in whatever way was possible. She deeply loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and extended family and strived to meet their needs in whatever way was possible.

Most importantly, Penny loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Penny’s heart’s cry was that everyone she came in contact with would come to a saving, life-changing knowledge of the salvation that is offered to anyone who calls on the name of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Penny is survived by her husband of 42 years, the love of her life, David; her daughter, Cori (Tate) Knutson and their children, Brach and Aiden Knutson; her son, David (Katie) Welch and their children, Hannah, Bryce, Grace and Brody Welch; her mother, Eileen Vacovsky; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her grandparents, Penny was preceded in death by her father, LeRoy James Vacovsky; and her sister, Linda Lee Ryan.

During the next three to four decades, Batavia could add 6,000 people to its population by way of a gradual addition of 2,300 to 2,500 new living units in different developments, Schielke said.

Permits have been issued for new homes in the Tanglewood subdivision on the city’s west side, Schielke said.

“The real estate market seems to be roaring back,” Schielke said.

Schielke also acknowledged two people leaving the city of Batavia – Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker and City Administrator Bill McGrath.

Banker is leaving at the end of the year to become the fire chief in Janesville, Wisconsin, and McGrath will retire in July, Schielke said.

GENEVA – Rob Russell on Thursday gave the Kane County treasurer a personal check for nearly $6,000 with hopes it will end controversy surrounding purchases he made as coroner. Treasurer David Rickert confirmed he received the check for $5,771.73.

In a document signed by Russell, the coroner wrote his family’s check was reimbursement for the cost of public safety items bought in connection with the annual National Night Out event in August.

“It is my hope that this action will bring to a close a controversy which has already consumed far too much county time and energy,” Russell wrote.

County Board members have criticized Russell for buying the items, which they

described as promotional materials. Last month, they called for an evaluation of the county’s credit card policy after Russell used his county-issued credit card for about $6,000 in expenses. They were upset he avoided the standard approval process for promotional items.

Russell maintains the purchases were within his right.

“It remains my firm belief, based on my conversations with the Kane County state’s attorney and his staff, that my actions in this matter have all been entirely legal, and have been a lawful exercise of my authority under the Illinois internal control statutes,” he wrote.

His family’s decision to reimburse the county came “after prayerful consideration,” Russell wrote.

“Now it is time to move on with the business of the people,” he wrote.

St. Charles High School alumnus continues growing #BudgetBeard

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Chris Kaergard has decided his large beard is a fiscal year 2016 beard – its expiration date will be June 30.

“I don’t know if I’m willing to go longer than that,” Kaergard said Thursday.

Kaergard, a political reporter at the Journal Star in Peoria and a St. Charles High School alumnus, said he will not get rid of his months-old beard until a state budget is passed.

Kaergard last shaved his beard on May 31 when the state spring legislative session ended in Springfield.

Except for a light trimming above his upper lip, the beard has remained untouched.

Kaergard and his facial hair have appeared in multiple photos with local Democratic leaders and state Republican leaders, such as Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner.

“Clearly it’s got some cross-party appeal,” Kaergard said jokingly of his beard.

Kaergard teaches part-time at Bradley University, and his students have asked him if he

Some hope on opioid abuse THE WASHINGTON POST Republican presidential candidates have spent much of their time on the campaign trail lately pledging more treatment and less punishment to deal with epidemic drug abuse, most dramatically in a viral video featuring an emotional New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

This is a welcome development – even if the GOPers, like their Democratic counterparts, exaggerate the degree to which arrests for simple possession of drugs, as opposed to trafficking, have swollen the prison population. The more attention leaders focus on the heartbreaking rise in prescription opioid and heroin addiction – and overdose deaths – the better.

According to the latest Drug Enforcement Administration data, in fact, the candidates are raising their voices at a time when federal and state policy already has begun to shift – and to show results.

The United States’ 21st-century drug abuse problems have been rooted in legal drugs rather than illegal ones: specifically, massive diversion and abuse of prescription opioid painkillers, which led to a spinoff rise in the abuse of chemically similar heroin.

The DEA’s freshly issued National Drug Threat Assessment Summary shows drug-induced fatalities are the leading type of injury deaths in the United States; indeed, they outnumbered motor-vehicle fatalities by more than 10,000 in 2013, exactly the reverse of the situation 10 years earlier.

However, other statistics in the same report are more hopeful. The share of DEA survey respondents around the country reporting “high” illicit availability of opioids shrank to 56.7 percent in 2015 from 75.4 percent last year. The percentage of high school seniors abusing prescription drugs declined from 15 percent to 13.9 percent between 2013 and 2014.

Possibly this is related to more cautious prescribing attitudes among physicians, as reflected in the decline of narcotics disbursed by manufacturers, from the all-time high of 17.2 billion doses in 2011, to 16.2 billion in 2013. Data for the first nine months of 2014 suggest a continuation of that trend. The “pill mill” phenomenon is being brought under control, with the help of State Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs.

The grimmest statistic in the DEA report is the near-doubling in heroin overdose deaths between 2011 and 2013, from 4,397 to 8,257. This is partly an unintended consequence of the reduced illicit availability of prescription opioids, as those addicted to pills switch to cheaper heroin.

The jump-starting of previously dormant heroin markets in small-city and rural America is one of the saddest offshoots of the prescription opioid flood; whether it proves temporary or permanent will depend in large part on the policies implemented in the next presidential term and beyond. The DEA’s evidence of an incipient leveling off in opioid abuse provides no basis for complacency, but some reason for optimism.

I worked in the newsroom both Saturday and Sunday. Our shorthanded weekend staff was slammed with statements, breaking news and more protests. The story grew to a national scale. I fielded calls from NBC, CBS and Al Jazeera Amer-

Flexibility boosts STCN’s Spellman

Doubles vision gripped St. Charles North girls tennis coach Sean Masoncup during his first season at the helm.

By extension, senior Emma Spellman played with separate doubles partners throughout the fall, teaming with classmate Morgan Rerko for duals and freshman Shelby Thomas during invitationals and the IHSA state series.

Shifting styles seldom presented a problem for Spellman, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Tennis Player of the Year. As long as she found a racket and a teammate at her side, the four-year varsity veteran had equilibrium.

“I’ve never really had a consistent partner, so it wasn’t new to be switching it up a lot,” Spellman said. “Yeah, I’m getting new partners all the time.”

Spellman and Thomas were 21-4 together, while Spellman and Rerko collaborated on an Upstate Eight Conference River Division title at No. 1 doubles that kept North nipping at eventual champ Geneva in the race for the team title.

Masoncup, North’s longtime boys tennis coach who also guided Spellman’s older brother, Grant, long has had a penchant for making doubles advancement a postseason priority.

Although Thomas also shined in singles – her playing background before entering high school – Masoncup frequently drilled her in doubles alongside Rerko, Spellman and fellow senior Brittany Rohrsen, who each switched partners at various intervals.

A similar experience under Masoncup’s predecessor, Eve Tubman, prepared Spellman while easing her nerves.

She has a bunch of different skill sets that allowed her to be successful with whoever we put her with.”

Because Thomas excelled at hitting groundstrokes, the 5-foot-11 Spellman focused on providing an intimidating force at the net.

With Rerko, both players

responded to each other’s instincts. Either Spellman or Rerko were equally capable of getting to the net and finishing points, but Spellman proved equally adept at sitting back at the baseline after hitting expert serves.

“I do simply like having a teammate on the court with me and talking through things.

Being in it and not just by yourself,” Spellman said. “But also, my strength was serving, which in doubles helps a lot, and also being tall and being at the net is a strength.”

Spellman and Thomas won their first two matches at the state tournament before defending state champions Katherine Harvey and Vinaya

Rao of Stevenson dealt the duo a 6-1, 6-2 loss at Rolling Meadows.

Spellman described the Patriots’ tandem as “amazing.”

The next morning, she began hearing that adjective about herself from teammates and opposing coaches and players when she suffered a second loss and was eliminated from the consolation draw.

“She got better every year and she had a great serve and was a good net player, had good hands at the net,” Batavia coach Brad Nelson said. “She was tough.”

The Spellman siblings began taking tennis lessons at Dunham Woods Riding Club at a young age, immediately

fostering a lasting admiration for the sport. Grant Spellman, a Stanford sophomore, plays club tennis in college. Emma Spellman hopes to follow suit at her future school.

And to think they were hooked from the get-go.

“It was fun playing with him even if we were arguing sometimes, since we were little,” Emma Spellman said. “It was always a fun activity you could do in the summer.”

Spellman played singles matches sporadically at the beginning of her North career, but ultimately was paired up in doubles for the long haul.

Although her partners were known to change, her demeanor was another story.

‘More than a one-week process’ Previous option work could prove vital against C-G

Albeit not thrilled with an opening-round pairing against Mt. Carmel in the 2014 Class 7A football playoffs, Batavia’s defense believed it had done what it needed to be ready to stop the triple-option attack.

The first drive of the game proved different, as Mt. Carmel marched down the field and imposed its will to take an early lead. While the Bulldogs settled in, it was costly in a 21-16 season-ending loss to yet another option-based offensive team.

A new challenge awaits Saturday as Cary-Grove, one of Illinois’ premier triple-option teams, visits Batavia in the 7A quarterfinals, a game that brings about the “Why will this year be different?” question.

Why will Batavia solve the option this go-around after seeing its season end against Mt. Carmel and against Prairie Ridge in the 6A semifinals in 2011? Or how about against a Downers Grove North team that dismantled the No. 1 seeded Bulldogs, 38-26, in the first round in 2012, before the Bulldogs eventually won the state title in 2013?

While veteran defensive coordinator Matt Holm hasn’t dwelled on the past, it certainly has laid groundwork for what Batavia will see Satur-

“We talked about it

(Wednesday), saying that Cary-Grove is right up there with Prairie Ridge and Mt. Carmel as the best,” Holm said. “You can’t key on certain players against these teams.

Yeah, (Pennington) is a horse and he’s tough to bring down, but you’re not going to stop these kind of teams keying in on one guy.”

The preparation that Batavia (10-1) puts in on a weekly basis is what they already feel

is second to none, but it takes a completely different stage playing an elimination game against an option offense that really doesn’t allow you to take a break.

While a week seems like a very short time for preparation for a team like CaryGrove (10-1), which lost the 2014 7A state championship game to Providence, Holm said this has been something the Bulldogs have been work-

ing on all season.

“It’s more than a one-week process,” Holm said. “We’re in the mode now where we do option stuff every week.

It doesn’t matter if the team we’re going up against runs the option at all. You know if you’re playing this far into the playoffs, you’re going to run into a team that does it, and does it well.”

The buzz in the stands

The marquee matchup

It’s no secret what Cary-Grove wants to do offensively, and it’s been the same for a number of years: Impose its will with the triple-option. While this seems like the obvious choice for what to watch, I’m going to turn the table and say Cary-Grove’s defense against Batavia quarterback Kyle Niemiec (2,460

yards, 22 touchdowns) and receiver Canaan Coffey holds the key.

By no means am I saying that Batavia stopping the Trojans’ offensive attack is not crucial to this one, but I think if Batavia can handle its business offensively, it will be just fine.

“All the pieces are starting to fall into place,” Piron said, referring to Coffey and running back Zach Garrett both being completely healthy after fighting injuries over the past week. “We like what we’re doing in all aspects of the game and I think this is as focused and mentally ready a team as I’ve coached, us ... doing our thing will make us successful Saturday.”

Containing Coffey, who has a school-record 74 receptions, with 1,054 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, should be the top priority for the Trojans.

The X-factor

The team that gets off to a better start.

I think it has shown in each of the first two games for both teams in the playoffs, and will be important come Saturday afternoon. There’s not too many things that Piron and defensive coordinator Matt Holm would like to see more than an early lead for the Bulldogs.

Same goes for Seaburg and the Trojans because Piron knows “you do not want to play from behind against a triple-option team.” Cary-Grove’s Tyler Pennington, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound fullback who has rushed for over 1,200 yards and 21 touchdowns this season, will be called

on early and often.

“I think it’s been the common denominator in both of our first two games,” Seaburg said. “We’ve had great starts on both sides of the ball.”

Benet barely blinked before it saw a 14-0 hole against Cary-Grove in the second round last week, while Simeon allowed Coffey to race free on a 68-yard catch-and-run from Niemiec to give the Bulldogs the lead in the first 20 seconds.

Batavia getting off to a fast start puts the Trojans in a position where they might have to get out of running the ball so much, while Cary-Grove could pound the football at will with a lead and tire out the Batavia front seven if it surges ahead.

Best case-scenario for the Trojans

Get the early lead and see Pennington find space. There’s no secret Pennington is the No. 1 option for Cary-Grove, but the Trojans, who get starting quarterback J.P. Sullivan (mononucleosis) back after backup Bobby Collins led them to victory in the first two weeks of the playoffs, really only have seen Pennington “bottled up,” in Holm’s words, once in its only loss of the season – to Huntley. But the Bulldogs believe they are prepared for the option, and driving down the field and putting a touchdown on the board could create some doubt and give the Trojans the exact confidence they need to go into Batavia and come away with a victory.

Best case-scenario for the Bulldogs

Do what you do best. It worked for Piron last week and really has all season.

Rarely have the Bulldogs gotten out of their element, so stick to what’s gotten you here and stay aggressive. Offensively, Coffey will be a receiver unlike any the Trojans have gone up against, so get him involved early. Yes, stopping the option is the top priority, but don’t come into the matchup “starry-eyed,” as Piron thought the Bulldogs did in their loss to Naperville Central. Cary-Grove is very, very good, but the Bulldogs should have the confidence that they can win.

Batavia 31, Cary-Grove 28 I do believe the 2006 matchup will be a telling tale for this one, as well. One of these two teams that deserves to be playing in DeKalb in a couple of weeks will see its season end Saturday, and my thought, just barely, is that it will be the Trojans going home. It’s really a tough pick to make, but Batavia seems more determined than in past seasons, and I think Piron and Holm have this group ready to go and prepared to beat an option team this time around. Batavia’s defense will bend, and Pennington will find the end zone and his fair share of yards, but Coffey will also have a big game and the Bulldogs score late in the fourth quarter to earn a spot in the 7A semifinals.

“It’s important to be ready for a team like this at all times,” senior outside linebacker Zack Majka said. “You know eventually, like last year, you’re going to see a team like this and stopping them takes a lot of looking at things and preparing, so it’s good to do it as much as we’re able.”

Although he was named defensive coordinator when coach Dennis Piron was hired in 2011, Holm has been at his alma mater, where he also

but Holm has been around the horn and seen his fair share of Batavia playoff football games.

Majka and middle linebacker Colin Thurston couldn’t help but remember the Mt. Carmel loss, and know how valuable that first drive Saturday can be.

As a middle linebacker, Thurston, who leads Batavia with 71 tackles and has assisted on 17 more, will be in the center trying to contain Pennington and Cary-Grove.

“It’s tough because your read or your assignment may not have the ball, but you still have to stick to it,” Thurston said. “(Cary-Grove) is the best at it for a reason, they’re very quick pre-snap and we have to make sure to do our jobs as each individual player. We

always say, ‘Do your one-eleventh job, and not someone else’s.’ ” But as good of a job as Piron said the scout team has done trying to replicate CaryGrove, Saturday afternoon will just not be the same. The speed, the size, the physicality, deception, etc., it’s all going to be different or at a higher level come game time.

“We did what we thought was a good job being ready against Mt. Carmel and they ran it down our throats last year,” Thurston said. “This team is more focused, more hungry and we can’t let that happen this year. They’re too good.”

The last time these two tradition-based programs faced each other was in 2006, and if that game was any indication of what fans will see when the Trojans and Bulldogs take the field in the Class 7A quarterfinals, then it will be more than memorable.

That 6A contest saw Batavia hand No. 1 seed Cary-Grove its first loss of the season in a 15-14 win, prompting a run to the state title game, where the Bulldogs were eventually defeated. But first thing’s first, there is still a game Saturday and the Bulldogs would like to see history repeat itself and send visiting Cary-Grove home with another loss.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge,” Cary-Grove coach Brad Seaburg said. “They do a number of things well and are obviously well-coached. The last time we played Batavia was a battle and we expect it to be much of the same.” “[Cary-Grove] has the ability to jump on people,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “They are very, very good at what they do and we feel the same about our group, so it should be fun.”

A plethora of holiday action set in county Come on, guys. Forget the Starbucks controversy.

Besides the fact Dunkin’ Donuts and Panera have more jolly cups, there are plenty of Christmas season events around here and lots of people in a holiday mood.

There’s the weekend of Dec. 4 and 5 in Geneva, for example. Think Christmas Walk (store windows come alive), the arrival of Santa Lucia, a tree-lighting ceremony, House Tour and lots of upbeat people.

At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 and at 3 p.m. Dec. 6 in St. Charles, the much loved St. Charles Singers group will once again be at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church on East Main Street with its annual Christmas concert.

Tickets are needed. Check Townhouse Books in St. Charles.

Alert the grandchildren! (Leia and Olivia, pay attention.) Nov. 28 is a big day. There’s a movie at the Arcada – “Elf.” Add to that horsedrawn sleigh rides in the afternoon. Then grab a curb seat for the Electric Christmas Parade.

The parade steps off at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 28 from the top of the West Street hill.

Remember the parades before lights? Painfully, I recall riding in the rear of the St. Charles Lumber and Fuel truck, dressed as Red Riding Hood and holding on for dear life the leash of Fu Fu, Grandpa Steve’s German shepherd, who barked the whole way – nothing like the howl of The Wolf.

STC Kiwanis Club sees success with Peanut Days fundraiser KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Kiwanis organization, the St. Charles Kiwanis Club vowed to make this year’s Peanut Days fundraiser a big success.

The club never expected, however, to net 40 percent more than its budgeted amount of $15,000, a news release stated. It also was the first time – in club members’ memory – all 553 ordered boxes of peanuts were donated in either street or box sales, without leftovers, the release stated.

“The smaller Geneva, Campton Hills and St. Charles Golden K Clubs accounted for about 20 percent of the total, and 104 boxes were donated by thoughtful individuals to our troops,” the release stated. “Local

League of Illinois Bicyclists changes name KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The League of Illinois Bicyclists, a nonprofit bicycle advocacy organization, announced the rebranding of its organization to Ride Illinois during the fourth annual Illinois Bike Summit on Oct. 28.

The organization also unveiled its new name, logo and website, www.rideillinois. org, the same day.

The rebranding reflects the growing popularity of bicycling and the organization’s commitment to reach and represent the broad spectrum of people who ride bikes in Illinois, a news release from the organization stated.

Since 1992, the organization has been dedicated to one mission – to improve bicycling conditions throughout the state so more people

can safely and easily ride in Illinois.

Over the years, the organization – which is based in Aurora – has evolved from a state chapter of the League of American Bicyclists to an independent organization with a strong advocacy voice in Springfield and municipalities all around the state.

In that time, its membership has increased from a few hundred people to more than 2,200 Illinois residents, the release stated.

“We are committed to expanding our membership and influence even farther,” said Frank Brummer, board president for Ride Illinois in the release. “Our organization made a bold decision to seek out a new name that would appeal to a wide audience and align them with our mission – a name that would inspire everyone to get on a bike and Ride Illinois.”

24 Hot flashes can persist

long after menopause

Dear Dr. K: Recently you wrote about a patient who was still having hot flashes in her early 70s, long after menopause. I’m in my 60s, and I still have them.

How long might they last?

Dear Reader: Following the publication of that column, I got many letters with questions like yours. These letters also described what it is like to suffer from hot flashes.

One reader recalled driving with her parents on a bitter cold winter night. Suddenly, her mother had a hot flash.

It was so bad that she “turned the heater off, opened the car windows and stuck her head out the window. My father asked her what the heck she was doing.”

Or: “Take a shower – forget it. You dry yourself off, and then you are just as wet as you were.

And you stay that way for a good half-hour.”

In my column, I had advised removing as much clothing as possible to allow the release of body heat. A reader wrote: “I can’t strip down any further. I’d be arrested.”

These letters reminded me of a patient of mine who said that she had suffered from hot flashes since her periods stopped, at age 54.

Since then, “I have good months and bad months, but they’re always there.

They’ve become a part of my life.”

What made the patient remarkable was that she was 89 years old.

Several large research studies on this subject, involving hundreds of thousands of women, have been published in the past decade.

They (finally) demonstrate what patients have been saying all along.

One study from Sweden found that 9 percent of women age 72 were still

A study from the United States found that 20 percent of women who were more than 20 years past menopause still had hot flashes.

Another recent study from the U.S. found that in women who began to experience hot flashes before their menstrual periods stopped, hot flashes persisted in nearly 70 percent 12 years after menopause.

What treatments should you consider? In my opinion (it’s a controversial area), hormone therapy is generally the best option for the first 10 years following menopause (unless breast cancer runs in your family).

Beyond 10 years, hormone therapy starts to increase a woman’s risk for heart disease.

After that, other treatments can be effective.

This includes a drug called clonidine, the SSRI and SNRI drugs used for depression, and two drugs used to treat seizures and nerve pain, gabapentin and pregabalin. (It’s not that hot flashes are a sign of depression or seizures.

It’s that medicines used to treat those problems also are effective against hot flashes.)

So to the many readers who said their doctors didn’t appear to believe that they were still having hot flashes a decade or more after menopause, my advice to you is simple.

Tell them that many scientific studies support what you are saying.

Teen’s request for school-night date is more than reasonable Dr. Wallace: My dad is my problem. I know he loves me and wants only the best for me and I love him dearly, too. However, we often have disagreements, and when this happens he sometimes tells me “If you don’t like it around here, then you can leave.” This hurts my feelings and makes me feel like he really would like me to leave rather than calmly discuss things and compromise. I always have my homework complete and I’m on the Honor Roll. I behave myself and, in fact, you could call me a “goody-goody.” (No drinking, drugs, sex, or smoking – ever.)

I’m 17 and I have a part-time job so I can save my money and help pay for my college tuition.

My schedule is very busy and I work in a nice restaurant on Friday nights from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturdays from 3 to 11 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. I like my job and it pays well.

My problem is that because of my job I don’t have much time for any social life. I have a boyfriend, but I don’t get to see him too often. My dad won’t let me go out on a school night, but all I’m asking for is one night a week to go out for a pizza and a soda, even on a Sunday evening after work.

And I could be home by 10 p.m.

Don’t you think one night out (and in early) would be reasonable for me to see my boyfriend?

But if they refuse to allow you one school-night date, accept their decision and cut back on your weekend work schedule.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 15-year-old girl and I want to share my story with your readers. One of my close friends recently told me and two other close friends at her sleepover that she was thinking about taking her own life. She told us all to not tell anyone about her plans. The other two friends told me they didn’t think she was serious and that they weren’t going to tell anyone about it, but somehow I just couldn’t keep quiet about it. I called my youth director at our church and told her about it and then I discussed it with my mother. Telling them was the best thing I could have done. Both my mom and the youth director contacted my friend’s parents and she is now alive and well and is receiving professional counseling.

After I told people she was suicidal, I was really afraid that my friend would never speak to me again, but after she started coun-

seling, she called me and told me she forgave me. Her family has thanked me many times over.

Even if my friend hadn’t forgiven me, I would have been happy she was still alive and healing.

Please print my letter. I want all teens to understand that if they hear someone threaten to commit suicide, they should tell a responsible adult who would know how to intervene. It is better to be safe than sorry because under these circumstances, silence can be deadly. – Nameless,

Dr. Wallace: I’ve got an abundance of freckles on my face and arms and I despise them. What causes them and how can I get rid of them? – Coco, Reno, Nev. Coco: There is nothing you can do to rid yourself of freckles, which serve as part of your skin’s protection against the sun.

But by staying out of the sun, you can keep them to a minimum. Freckles are caused by an uneven distribution and production of something called Melanin, which is a substance that gives skin its color.

Some girls consider freckles to be beauty marks and many guys, including me, agree.

Here is another deal, like yesterday’s, that revolved around a key entry – a gate into declarer’s hand. South was in four hearts. West led the club ace and continued with the club king.

What should declarer have done?

This type of auction always leaves one side feeling very uncomfortable.

West could have passed out one spade, but the next moment his opponents have roared into game. However, West had a normal balancing one-no-trump overcall, which showed 11-14 points.

After North doubled to indicate his extra strength, the rest of the auction was natural.

South was threatened with losing four tricks: two spades, one heart and one club. Although the heart finesse rated to be working, the lack of an immediate hand entry persuaded declarer to sacrifice a trick in that suit. He ruffed the second club with dummy’s heart nine and led the heart five to his eight. West won and played his third club, but declarer ruffed with the heart ace, drew trumps ending in his hand, and led a spade. After West played low smoothly, did South call for dummy’s jack or king?

As usual, counting points supplied the answer. West had already shown up with 12 points: the heart king and top three clubs. If he also held the spade ace, he would have been too strong for his balancing one-no-trump overcall. Declarer finessed dummy’s jack and claimed when East won with the ace.

Keep counting the high-card points.

The master bedroom is at one end of the house; the other two bedrooms are at the opposite end.

Two years into our marriage we got a surprise blessing – a baby girl. She’s now 3 and still sleeping in our room in her own toddler bed.

She has great sleeping habits, and I don’t think it would affect her to sleep in another room.

All I can think about are horror stories of babies and small children being snatched from their beds (from the window) while the parents sleep.
