‘It’s a tragedy’: Dog attacked, killed by coyote

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles resident Diane Sturkey now knows the sad result that can happen when living in a suburban area around coyotes that no longer are afraid to approach humans near their homes.

Sturkey said a coyote killed her 8-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Otto, on Saturday. She said the coyote had been stalking the dogs that live in her neighborhood near Division Street and Kirk Road.

Sturkey said she and her neighbors had been approached by coyotes – sometimes in packs – with some so bold as to come right up on the back patio.

“Here is what I’m afraid of – they’re not afraid of us anymore,” Sturkey said. “Used to be you’d go out there, and they would run away. [The coyote] knew there were dogs here. I’m afraid children will be next. We’ve lived here 22 years, and I don’t ever remember this type of behavior before.”

The type of behavior Sturkey described is similar to what was reported this summer in Geneva’s Fisher Farms and Westhaven subdivisions. Residents complained to Geneva officials about aggressive coyotes that made it impossible for them to walk their dogs, let alone let the animals out in their backyard.

Otto, a Yorkie, defended another dog that had been under attack by a coyote. Otto then was carried off by the coyote, said owner Diane Sturkey, a St. Charles resident.

California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Coyotes normally are elusive and afraid of people, Timm had said in July.

But research has found some coyotes are habituated to humans and are unafraid of them, possibly because people were feeding them, he said. Coyotes attack medium and small dogs for food or territory, Timm said.

Sturkey said her three dogs – Gracie and Sophie, both west highland white terriers, and Otto – were in the front yard of her St. Charles home about 9 p.m. Saturday, waiting to be leashed for an evening walk. They all suddenly just took off.

A coyote went after Gracie, Sturkey said, and Otto, her 3.5-pound Yorkie, went to protect her and paid for his gallantry with his life.

“My husband went after them, and he saw the coyote grab the little guy,” Sturkey

said. “Otto came to her rescue. He was defending her.

The coyote carried him off.”

Sturkey said they, along with neighbors, friends and even strangers, searched all night for Otto. His body was not found until 5 p.m. Sunday by some boys fishing at a retention pond on the corner of East Side Drive and Division Street, the border between Geneva and St. Charles.

“He was wearing a green sweater with a skull and crossbones on it,” Sturkey said. “An officer came to the door with his sweater and told us not to get his body, for us not to see him like that.

But my husband got him anyway. We did not want to leave him there. ... It’s a tragedy.”

Wildlife control expert Rob Erickson of DeKalb had proposed to Geneva officials that he trap and remove aggressive coyotes and euthanize them. But the Human Society of the U.S. disagrees

Tips on dealing with coyotes in your area: • Do not feed coyotes.

Property owners should limit the availability of unintentional food sources, such as bird or pet food, ripe fruit and trash.

• Do not leave small pets unattended while they are outside.

• Coyotes are a permanent fixture in Illinois in rural, urban and suburban areas.

• Coyotes keep populations of small mammals, such as rabbits under control.

• If a coyote approaches you, yell, stand up and wave your arms or throw something at the coyote.

• If a coyote needs to be removed from an area, hire an experienced trapper who is licensed by the state.

Source: University of Illinois Cooperative Extension and offers training sessions so people can learn how to haze fearless coyotes by making noise or banging pots and pans.

Sturkey said she was now more aware of what to do – and hopes others will take note, as well.

“Be aware that they [coyotes] are here” Sturkey said.

“And you do have to protect your pets.”

“There needs to be adequate access from the west side of town,” said Pepping, who lives on the city’s west side. “I moved here nine years ago, and I expected this would be done already.”

Pepping was one of the residents who attended Wednesday’s public information meeting concerning the phase one engineering study for the planned reconstruction of Main Street from Van Nortwick Avenue

to Water Street. After preliminary engineering and environmental studies are completed, plan preparation and right-of-way acquisition would begin.

Construction would occur in the third phase. The project is set to get underway by the summer or fall of 2016, or in 2017 at the latest.

When construction begins is dependent on right-of-way acquisition needs, city engineer Noel Basquin said.

During the meeting, residents had the chance to view four different concepts for project.

Pepping, who has kids, said he would like to see bike lanes along the road, noting they will soon be old enough to ride bikes. Longtime resident Larry Briggs said he had concerns about allowing parking along the road, especially the stretch of road near Batavia High School.

“This is a very busy street,” Briggs said. “The safety of children and pedestrians is important to me.”

EXACTLY WHAT IS A CATARACT, ANYWAY? Most people are familiar with the term “cataract,” but not everyone can explain exactly what it is. We can begin by saying it is not a disease. Instead, it is a painless clouding of the eye lens, which is normally transparent enough to allow light rays to enter the eye and produce a sharp image on the retina. With cataracts, vision seems to be fuzzy or out of focus. Clouded eye lenses may also lead to double vision, glare from light sources, poor night vision, faded colors, increased nearsightedness, and a ghosting of images. Because other eye conditions can also produce these same symptoms, it is a good idea to have eyes examined when any of these symptoms prove bothersome.

P.S. Risk factors that increase the risk of developing cataracts include age (70% of U.S. adults over age 75 have cataracts), cigarette smoking, long-term corticosteroid use, eye injuries, prolonged exposure to UV light, diabetes, and obesity.

A Kane County Board committee on Wednesday recommended approval of a contract with Leyden Electric Inc. to construct a wayside horns warning system at the Union Pacific Railroad crossings at Brundige and LaFox roads.

County documents have indicated the trains upset the rural peace of Blackberry Township. The tracks carry more than 100 trains a day, with each train blowing its locomotive horn at all hours.

duce the noise pollution, documents have stated.

The county received two bids for the project, said Steve Coffinbarger, assistant director of transportation at the Kane County Division of Transportation. He noted few companies do this work across the country.

He said Leyden Electric of Elburn was the low bidder with a proposed contract amount of $283,500 – about 16 percent more than the engineer’s estimate of $244,000.

CTC Inc. submitted a bid of about $295,412, according to agenda documents.

The documents also indicate the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will provide about $199,000 for construction, or about 70 percent of the costs.

The county, township and local community participation accounts for the remaining 30 percent, documents show.

Police: Woman rescues kitten from storage unit, ex-boyfriend ticketed

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 58-yearold man was ticketed with animal cruelty last week after he locked his ex-girlfriend’s kitten in a container in a storage unit on the city’s far east side, according to a St. Charles police report.

Perry D. Weingart, of the 1000 block of West 47th Place, Chicago, told the woman in a text message if she wanted her kitten she would find him at the self-storage facility, police reported.

The woman reportedly called police for assistance, and an officer met her at the facility, which was in the 4100 block of East Main Street.

The unit was “crammed full” of belongings, and the pair noticed a storage tote with a fogged interior after moving several boxes and a large industrial-size floor bucket, police reported.

In addition to the kitten, a small bag of dry cat food and an empty bowl were inside

the tote, police reported, noting the bottom of the container was wet, apparently with water.

“The kitten was in a frantic state,” police reported.

The officer picked up the kitten, which was “clearly struggling,” appeared dazed and had a rapid heartbeat, according to the report.

No air holes were in the container, and the lid was securely snapped on, police reported.

Additionally, the report indicated about 10 to 15 pounds of items were stacked on the container, making it impossible for the kitten to open the lid for more oxygen, “which it clearly needed.”

Weingart told police he placed the kitten there that morning, Nov. 3, according to the report. The report didn’t specify how long it took before the kitten was rescued.

He was charged with animal cruelty, a local ordinance ticket, police reported.

The report indicated Weingart works in the area.

For the third consecutive year, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office will hold a no-refusal operation the night before Thanksgiving.

“We all want the roads to be safer,” State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Wednesday during his monthly meeting with reporters.

This will be the office’s second no-refusal operation this year; the first was the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day. No-refusal operations are designed to expedite the booking process for those charged with driving under the influence. Police work with an assistant state’s attorney to quickly obtain a search warrant to compel a DUI suspect to submit to a blood-alcohol level test.

McMahon said a “broad spectrum” of police agencies in the county will participate

in the no-refusal operation, but he declined to provide specifics so people cannot intentionally avoid those areas.

The operation will begin during the late evening Nov. 26 and last through early Nov. 27, he said.

In other news, McMahon said, assistant state’s attorneys visited 200 of the county’s 228 precincts on Election Day, and the Election Complaint Line received 19 calls.

Of the calls, seven were about technical issues regarding the voting machines; four were about mailings residents received that day or in the days leading up to the election; three concerned smartphones in polling places; and two were about the length of the lines, McMahon said.

None of the complaints rose to the need of filing a former complaint with the court, he said.

“We had a very smooth running election day,” he said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After serving 90 days in jail for retail theft, an Aurora man last week stole a bottle of liquor – sending him back to jail, according to a St. Charles police report.

David John Sasko, 56, of the 600 block of River Street, was charged Nov. 4 with felony retail theft, a Class 4 felony, for reportedly taking whiskey from Meijer, 855 S.

Randall Road, St. Charles.

A customer saw him steal the merchandise, which he concealed in his waistband, police reported.

Although the stolen merchandise David was valued John Sasko at only $17, an assistant state’s attorney authorized the felony charge considering Sasko’s criminal

history, police reported.

Sasko was released from jail that day after serving time for an Aurora shoplifting case, police reported. Additionally, the report noted, his criminal history included 12 arrests and eight convictions for larceny.

Online Kane County Sheriff’s Office records on Wednesday showed Sasko was being held in jail on $35,000 bail.

He was expected in court today for a status hearing.

McCarthy, Wahlberg to star in A&E reality show ‘Donnie Loves Jenny’ series will feature St. Charles wedding special KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com After saying their “I dos” Aug. 30 during a wedding ceremony held at Hotel Baker in St. Charles, Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg will open their relationship to the public with a 10-episode docu-series for A&E. The original, unscripted reality show, dubbed “Donnie Loves Jenny,” will follow McCarthy and Wahlberg from their recent wedding

in St. Charles through their lives as newlyweds. The series is slated to premiere early next year with a one-hour wedding special, followed by nine half-hour episodes, stated a news release.

“We’re thrilled to join Donnie and Jenny as they begin the next chapter of their lives,” A&E General Manager and Executive Vice President David McKillop said in the release. “Viewers have enjoyed following their relationship on ‘Wahlburgers’

and we look forward to sharing this next part of their journey.”

The series will mark the launch of the couple’s joint production entity, D&J Productions. It will be produced by “Wahlburgers” production company 44 Blue Productions, in association with D&J Production, according to the release.

No clues into who set fire near Sam’s Club Firefighters continue to ask for public’s help

BATAVIA – The Batavia Fire Department continues to seek the public’s help in finding the individuals who set a fire in a field behind Sam’s Club on Randall Road about 10 p.m. Nov. 5.

The fire department last week sent out a news release stating the department was seeking information on any suspicious activity in the area or if anyone witnessed any people or vehicles in the area around that time. Sam’s Club is at 501 N. Randall Road.

The fire department has not received any calls to date, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy

Banker said Wednesday.

“It is considered an incendiary fire,” Banker said. “The fire was lit somehow by somebody. What the intent was, I don’t know.”

The fire did not cause any monetary damage, although it did tie up fire department personnel and resources from Batavia, Elburn and Geneva for an extended period of time, Banker said.

The fire encompassed 10 acres, he said.

“It spread fairly quickly,” Banker said. “It was dropping embers onto Sam’s parking lot. Thank goodness none of the firefighters got hurt.”

I’m all about that treble “I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble. I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble … ” Sorry, Meghan Trainor, but I beg to differ. Because I’m all about that treble instead.

Geneva High School’s Treble Choir is where I spend ninth period each day, and it’s a class that I always look forward to. It’s an audition-only group comprised of all girls.

These unique factors make Treble Choir something I’m happy to be a part of.

I never would’ve been inspired to audition for a high school ensemble had I not been involved in choirs earlier in my life. My choir experience technically began in elementary school, as I was a part of my church’s Joyful Noise praise choir for firstthrough fifth-graders. It was there that I first performed with a group and learned about choral fundamentals, such as harmony, proper entrances and performance etiquette.

I loved singing and performing so much that I, not surprisingly, signed up for choir in middle school. Little did I know that this would be an excellent and impactful choice. I found myself invigorated by the music we created, from the echo of harmonies to exciting crescendos in any given song. I also enjoyed learning more about music and how to apply that knowledge to the various pieces we performed.

My middle school choir experience was so phenomenal that I had no doubts whatsoever about continuing with music through high school. Sure, I was a little nervous about the audition, but my love for choir was so strong that it overruled any fears I may have had about the process. When the rosters were posted for the upcoming school year and I saw my name on the list for Treble

The complexity of the music is definitely a step up from middle school, but I’m enjoying the challenge. We’re working on a variety of different songs, including an a cappella arrangement of Lorde’s pop hit “Royals” that I particularly love.

My choir experiences throughout the years have taught me that choir is so much more than just a group of people singing songs. Learning and polishing the music, as well as memorizing and performing it, is an elaborate process that can be frustrating at times. But the overall satisfaction that comes on concert day? Unmatchable. When I see the audience gazing at the choir in admiration as we hit a powerful chord, there’s this feeling of accomplishment that just can’t be beat. This love for music and singing has kept me persevering with choir throughout the years.

So, Meghan Trainor, the bass is great. But I’m still all about that treble!

Beyond gridlock: Delivering the Postal Service THE WASHINGTON POST Of all the tasks confronting the newly elected Congress, none is more basic, in terms of plain old democratic governance, than reforming the U.S. Postal Service.

This workhorse agency, which epitomizes the federal government in the daily lives of ordinary citizens, is reeling from a double whammy: technological obsolescence and accumulated inefficiencies.

Years of downsizing enabled the USPS to break even on its operations in fiscal 2013 (if you don’t count losses due to $5.6 billion in legally required retiree healthcare prepayments). Yet its bread-and-butter business, first-class mail, remains in long-term decline; the Postal Service’s only chance at a solvent future is to undertake further, more fundamental

structural reform.

The good news is that years of discussion have yielded significant bipartisan agreement about what needs to be done. In the Senate, Democrat Tom Carper and Republican Tom Coburn gained the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee’s approval this year for a plan that would grant the USPS billions of dollars in relief from the retiree health prepayments in return for changes, such as incentives to eliminate costly Saturday mail delivery and to increase use of more cost-effective curbside multi-residence mailboxes.

The bill also calls for allowing the Postal Service’s financial condition to be considered in arbitration with postal unions, which could introduce more financial realism into collective bargaining.

President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2015 budget proposal incorporated similar ideas.

In the House, Republican Darrell Issa offered a bill that moves in the same direction, though it includes even more fundamental changes, such as a financial “control board” to supervise the USPS’s transition.

The biggest obstacle facing reform is not partisan politics; it’s interest-group politics. The latest evidence of the lobbies’ power is a push by roughly half the current Senate for a moratorium on the closure of inefficient mail-processing facilities in 2015.

The public interest can still prevail, however, if Obama determines that he wants a solvent Postal Service as part of his legacy, and if the new Congress resolves to finish the reform job that this one started.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Area candy makers gearing up for the holiday season

All Chocolate Kitchen in downtown Geneva sells many different chocolate treats, including chocolate apples.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Acclaimed chef Alain Roby, owner of the All Chocolate Kitchen at 33 S. Third St. in downtown Geneva, wants to make sure his chocolate is as tasty as it can be.

That’s why he only sells products made with Gran-Cru chocolate. Sourced from Criollo beans, only 3 percent of the world’s chocolate has earned the GranCru distinction, he said.

“People really enjoy the quality,” said the pastry chef and chocolate artist. “It’s like the difference between a bad wine and an amazing wine.”

Like other candy makers in the area, Roby is getting ready for the upcoming holiday season. This week, the store will receive a shipment of 1,500 pounds of chocolate that it will turn into an assortment of sweet treats, including truffles and chocolate bars.

Roby doesn’t necessarily have a favorite candy to make.

“I like all of them,” he said. “They are like my children.”

The life-size sculptures that Roby has created entirely out of chocolate make All Chocolate Kitchen a popular attraction year-round.

In December 2012, Roby set a record for world’s longest candy cane after creating a 51-foot candy cane made of 900 pounds of sugar.

That was his third Guinness World Record. He also holds records for the tallest cooked sugar building and tallest chocolate sculpture.

Roby just hopes he can put a smile on the faces of his customers.

“Our goal is to make people happy,” he said.

Others besides Roby will be able to put their culinary skills to the test as All Chocolate Kitchen – in partnership with the Geneva Chamber of Commerce – will host a gingerbread house competition at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 as part of the Geneva Chamber’s annual Christmas Walk.

Also in Geneva, this is the first holiday season for Kilwins Chocolates

& Ice Cream, which opened in March at 407 S. Third St. in downtown Geneva.

The store is part of a franchise based in Petoskey, Michigan.

Assistant store manager Janet Valla said she is looking forward to the holiday shoppers that will soon be walking through the store’s doors.

“I like working during the holidays,” she said. “I really enjoy making someone smile, or helping them find the perfect gift.”

The store sells a variety of tasty treats, including chocolate, fudge, toffee and ice cream.

“Eighty percent of what we sell is homemade, whether it is from our Petos-

key kitchen or in our store,” Valla said.

The Geneva store has its own kitchen, where employees make fudge and caramel apples and hand dip such items as pretzels, Rice Krispies Treats and Oreo cookies.

“All of our hand-dipped items are really good sellers,” Valla said.

Kilwins Chocolates & Ice Cream will be open during the upcoming Christmas Walk, and those who stop in the store will be able to sample some of the store’s items, including a drinking chocolate, which should warm them up if wintry weather has set in.

“It is really rich and chocolaty,” Valla said.

Riverside Pizza and Pub is the real ‘Pi’ perfection ST. CHARLES – Some may argue that the mark of a great pizza lies in its cheese. That moment when you slide a spatula under a layer of crispy crust, and slowly lift a slice from the rest of the pie, is the moment of truth. Like good legs in a great wine, if thick, gooey strands of cheese are clutching on to that solo slice for dear life, then you know you’ve got something special.

Riverside Pizza and Pub in downtown St. Charles has got that something special.

The restaurant, which opened in the former Pi Pizza Perfection building in July, has two floors, two bars, 13 flat-screen TVs and the most important part of any long lasting pizza place – great pies.

It also serves standard pub fare, such as mozzarella sticks, onion rings, wings, sliders and nachos, as well as burgers, salads and pasta.

I tried Riverside pie in August, devouring a thin crust pizza – double crust and pan style are also available – with

garlic, mushrooms, onions, tomato sauce and a generous layer of cheese. The mushrooms were hearty and succulent and the smoldering touches of garlic elevated its flavor profile.

Once the box’s lid was lifted, revealing the glorious cheesy perfection within, I found myself unable to put a stop to the feeding frenzy that ensued.

Expect to overindulge after ordering a Riverside pizza; I certainly did.

Wanting to sample a few other options on the menu, my dining companion and I dined in on a Monday for lunch.

(Delivery and take-out options also are available.)

A six-top table near the window provided great views of the Arcada Theatre and Main Street. The second floor has more of a rustic-contemporary restaurant vibe, while the lower level has more of a bar atmosphere.

We ordered the Pot Roast Slider special ($3 each), the Macaroni and Cheese bites (on

a recommendation), a half-dozen order of spicy garlic buffalo wings ($5), a 10-inch Margherita pizza and a 10-inch BBQ Chicken pizza.

All of our orders came out extremely fast. The entire experience, from the moment we sat down to when we left, took about 50 minutes.

The triangular Macaroni and Cheese bites were my favorite appetizer. Oozing cheese-draped macaroni dripped from the crunchy, fried crust. The Pot Roast slider was juicy and flavorful. I would definitely order it again.

The garlic was difficult to detect in the wings, which tasted very much like they were blanketed by buffalo sauce, but they’re sizable; not the smaller wings normally associated with pub grub.

The freshness of the basil shined through on the Margherita pizza, which was layered with mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. I think the sauce-less pie needed more

of a kick of tomato tanginess, which would have been achieved with a light layer of tomato sauce. The BBQ Chicken pizza, a thick layer of cheese combined with chicken, red onions and a sweet blanket of barbecue sauce, hit all the right spots. The levels of sweet from the sauce and onions teamed perfectly with the salt from the cheese and chicken.

Though the former resident of the building considered its “Pi” perfection, I can’t help but think that Riverside Pizza and Pub is better suited for the adjective.

The result is a stunning portfolio of wines from a California region loaded with great pinot noir and chardonnay producers.

My favorite of the trio of

wines I sampled was Stemmari, Cantodoro, 2011 ($18). It’s medium bodied with easy-going tannins. It has coffee, dark chocolate and raspberry notes, with a hint of tobacco on the finish. It’s 80 percent nero d’Avola and 20 percent cabernet sauvignon.

Baci Vivaci ($9.99) is 100 percent Grillo and loaded with sparkling bubbles. It had light peach flavors and a pretty floral nose. It would be a fun alternative to Champagne on Thanksgiving. Dalila, 2012 ($20) is a grillo and viognier blend that has peach, orange zest and lemon flavors rounded out by oak notes.

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Wearing everything from an Eeyore costume to a toga this week, Isabel Herb has gotten the attention of her St. Charles East classmates.

“A few people have laughed at us,” Herb said of the outlandish outfits members of the girls swim team have worn at school this week as they prepare for Saturday’s IHSA girls swimming sectional at St. Charles North. “But it has been good-natured. They will look at me and say, ‘Oh, yeah, you’re one of those crazy swimmers’ … There have been

a lot of giggles.”

Herb will be seeking attention Saturday, as well – not for her outfit, but her times.

The junior will be seeking to qualify for state in four events – the 200-yard individual medley, the 200 free relay, the 100 backstroke and as the team’s butterfly swimmer in the 200 medley relay.

The 5-foot-8 swimmer already has the attention of coach Joe Cabel, who said the junior has emerged as one of the squad’s leaders this year.

He said Herb has put a lot of effort in and risen through the ranks during her time on the squad.

“She has been an increasingly hard worker,” Cabel said of Herb. “She has risen to be better in everything. The work she has done has helped her individually. She has made big strides.”

Herb and fellow junior Jordan Morling have become two of the Saints’ leaders. Al-

though they share the same lane for practice each day and swim the same events, the two feed off each other in a positive way and have made each other better, Cabel said. He said they are each other’s alter ego.

“They are yin and yang,” Cabel said.

“We are best friends,” Herb said of her bond with Morling.

“When we swim, we seem to each bring out the competitiveness in the other.”

The two are together almost from the time they enter East for morning practice through their afternoon practice.

“I have her in most of my classes,” Herb smiled.

Herb and Morling will be key in propelling East swimmers back to state. The squad, which finished eighth in state last year – with seven individuals and three relays making it to the state meet – wants to finish higher this year. Saturday’s times will determine how many swimmers make

the state cut.

“They’ve put a lot of hard work in,” Cabel said of squad members and their 11 practices a week and 600,000 yards swam in practices.

Herb said her internal drive this year has kept the grueling practice schedule from becoming burdensome. Missing the state cut in the 200 breaststroke last year may have had something to do with that.

“I’ve loved everything about this year,” Herb said. “I have stayed driven to keep going forward. Not making state in that event last year I feel has helped me with this year. … I am a year older and more mature. I have a better feel for myself, and we, as a team, are where we want to be.”

Herb also has been attracting the attention of college coaches who have been emailing their interest in her joining their squad. A strong showing by her Saturday will only increase that attention.

St. Francis appears to have drawn the most rugged semifinal opponent; St. Francis and

Mater Dei combine for seven losses this season, while Montini and Joliet Catholic on the other side have 27.

Regardless of the foe, St. Francis is used to seeing an inspired effort from its opponent.

The Spartans’ reputation precedes them, and if teams can avoid being intimidated, they often are able to raise their game.

“People usually play their best against us or their worst, and usually it’s their best,” junior setter Daniele Messa said.

“So we’re used to a lot of competition. The teams that we play, they never give up, they always fight against us, so we’re pretty used to it.”

Messa’s emergence is one of the top developments for the Spartans.

She has 708 assists and has

proven equal to the challenge of feeding Haggerty (381 kills) often, while still involving other weapons, such as Kamryn Malloy (220 kills) and Boken (201 kills).

Kopec holds Messa to high standards – versatility and precision are non-negotiables.

“Because of our schedule, for us to win, we can’t just be a basic team,” Kopec said. “We have to set all the different shots and we need to try to give different looks to different teams. We ask her to do everything.”

The Spartans contend vying for state championships never loses its novelty, and intend to take the court Friday every bit as enthused as Mater Dei. “We have to be really excited on the court, too, because the other team is just so excited to play us,” Messa said.

This time, ending for real for former Bulldog Ben Fornek ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber This time, it really is the end for Ben Fornek.

He thought it might have been the end before, four years ago, when as a senior at Batavia the Bulldogs lost a playoff game. Fornek didn’t know if he was going to play football again, and that, coupled with the loss, hit him pretty hard.

But he did play again. He’s been playing for Augustana the past four seasons. Now, however, he knows Saturday will be his last football game.

The team captain and senior defensive back is a bit more prepared this time around, and though he thinks it’s “pretty weird” this is the end, he’s a lot more positive and reflective, as well.

“It’s bittersweet, it really is. By the time you’ve gone through four years of college football, your body feels like it’s deteriorating every practice, a little bit different soreness in some part of your body. But I know that at the

end of the day I’m going to miss it a lot,” Fornek said.

“We’re going through our last week, and it’s our last everything: last Tuesday practice, last scouting report, all that stuff. So it’s starting to hit me. It’s pretty weird.”

He’s been through this before, believing that his final contest in a Bulldogs uniform could have been his last on the field. He wasn’t ready for that when it happened. Four years later, however, it’s a different story.

“Even in high school, I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue to play football or not, so I kind of thought that in high school that might be my last game. And it wasn’t,” he said. “But now, I know that it’s my last game, so that’s pretty crazy. There was a lot of buildup to our last game in high school. It was a playoff game, and it was a playoff game we really thought that we should win.

And then we lost, and it kind of hit me pretty hard, personally, on an emotional level when we lost that game.

WHEATON – Expectations for the St. Francis girls volleyball team are so high that the jubilation of winning a state championship almost immediately turns to anticipation of the next one.

The Spartans won their second straight Class 3A state title last season, and libero Lisa Mordell said she and Molly Haggerty were instantly thinking three-peat.

“It’s unbelievable to think about, to be honest,” Mordell said. “I remember last year walking off the court after we won our second title, me and Molly looked at each other and kind of just said ‘Next year.’ It’s wild to think that we’re actually in this spot, going for a third.”

In the big picture, though, it’s exactly what most anticipated.

Led by Haggerty (Nebraska recruit) and senior middle hitter Mary Boken (Clemson recruit), the Spartans have another star-studded cast and an unrivaled program pedigree engineered by coach Peg Kopec, who has guided the Spartans to 10 IHSA state titles.

Some considered winning No. 11 this fall a foregone conclusion, but not Kopec, especially with Breese Mater Dei (37-3) providing formidable opposition in Friday’s state semifinal at Redbird Arena. Mater Dei’s only loss against an Illinois opponent came Sept. 5 against Bloomington in three sets.

As the season has wound down and led to this final game Saturday in the Quad Cities, Fornek and his fellow senior teammates have been reminiscing, looking back on how much they’ve grown.

That’s figurative – Fornek talked about how much more mature he’s become since he arrived as a freshman – as well as literal.

“When I start sitting down with some of the other guys on the team, we start to look back,” he said. “We were on Facebook the other day looking back at some of the pictures we took in our uniforms when we were freshmen. And [we talked about] how we felt now and things that have changed, coaches that have come and gone, players that have come and gone. It’s pretty weird, but we’re definitely going through that phase

right now.”

A win in the last game Saturday against Millikin would send Augustana to a .500 record. Certainly no championship-level celebration will follow. But a win Saturday also would allow Fornek to accomplish something he’s never done before.

At Batavia and in three years at Augustana, Fornek has never ended the season with a victory.

“It would be huge,” he said.

“I’ve never in my career won the last game of my football season. Just for a variety of reasons. [At Batavia] being in the playoffs, we lost our last game. And then in college we got stuck with some tough opponents and always lost our last game. It would be huge for us as seniors to go out with a win at home. It’s going to be an emotional game, and I can only imagine how emotional it would be if we lost. So a win would definitely help a lot in that respect and would definitely mean a lot to all the guys on the team.”

Fornek is in a unique posi-

tion among his fellow seniors.

As a team captain and team leader he’s got a little more responsibility, such as trying to come up with something to say before Saturday’s game, which he admitted Tuesday he hadn’t given a lot of thought to yet.

But he’s also going to be remembered differently by teammates, as well. In terms of his legacy, he wants to keep it pretty simple.

“If there was something that I’d like to leave behind it’s … a guy that works hard day in and day out,” he said.

“Regardless of the outcomes of the games, I basically go through the same stuff every week. I’m in the weight room, I’m doing what’s expected of me. That’s all that you can ask, and I hope that the younger guys kind of follow suit.”

DeKALB – Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey’s fourth-down call in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s 27-24 win over Toledo could have been seen as a gamble.

On fourth-and-5 from the Toledo 27-yard line, leading by three points, Carey was faced with a decision.

Kick and go up six points, or go for it and give his team a chance to get in the end zone. The call worked, as quarterback Drew Hare hit Aregeros Turner with a 7-yard pass on an out route to the NIU sideline which gave the Huskies a first down at the Toledo 20.

The drive would end with a 2-yard touchdown run by Cameron Stingily with 6 minutes, 33 seconds left that put NIU up 10 points, effectively sealing the contest.

“I had a look out there and I changed the play to a favorable play for [Turner],” Hare said. “It worked out.”

The thing is, to Carey didn’t see it as a risk.

“Well, it’s not much of a gamble. You’re on the [27]yard line and you’re probably just outside of [Christian Hagan’s] range and you’re going into the wind,” Carey said. “With the wind,

you probably kick that ball, but you’re not going to punt it, because if you punt it in the end zone, you get a [7]yard turnaround.

“We trust our guys, we got up there and we made a call, Drew changed it and made a great play and Aregeros made a great catch.”

If Hare makes a bad throw, Turner drops it, a sack, whatever, and it’s a different game for the Huskies.

A different season maybe.

Suddenly, athletic quarterback Dwight Macon and the Rockets’ rushing attack would have been looking to take the lead.

However, Hare and Turner played a big part in keeping the Huskies in control of their own destiny in the MAC West.

“That was huge. Great call by them. Again, it was one of those situations where it’s awareness a little bit by us on defense, too,” Toledo coach Matt Campbell said. “I think we’re playing quarters, actually it becomes man coverage.

That coverage by that defender, you’ve got to know where the sticks are. That’s a young guy there. Unfortunately, they made a great throw and catch and we didn’t respond to that.”

Lately, however, Allen and the rest of his teammates have had that fact questioned by fans and media alike. With the Bears coming off a 55-14 loss to the rival Packers Sunday night in Green Bay, outsiders suggested that someone had to be fired and that big changes needed to be made sooner rather than later.

On Wednesday, the day each week the defense is presented to the media, Tucker, Allen and linebacker Lance Briggs all made their case for

the fact that they knew what has gone wrong this season and re-hashing it didn’t do anyone inside Halas Hall any good.

“Right now, I’m focused on the Vikings,” Tucker said.

“Being embarrassed, at this point, is not productive.”

As coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery have suggested before, Tucker said Wednesday he believes the talent exists inside Halas Hall to win. But for a unit that ranks 26th in the league in total yards, 31st in yards per play and 28th in passing yards, the problems appear to be bigger than Tucker let on.

He said the same 11 defensive players that started

against the Packers will start Sunday against the Vikings Sunday at Soldier Field. When asked what personnel had broken down on a pair of long Aaron Rodgers touchdown passes to Jordy Nelson, Tucker said he wasn’t the kind of a guy to throw any of his players under the bus.

But for a team that has now lost three straight games – giving up 50 points in each of the past two – taking ownership remains a talking point.

Briggs said as much both Sunday night as he left the Bears locker room at Lambeau Field and Wednesday, when he said that when he goes back and watches games from his career, he’d likely skip Sunday night’s 39-point loss.

Bears defensive coordinator: We were not prepared enough

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – After announcing Monday there are no immediate plans to shake up the coaching staff, the Bears on Wednesday essentially echoed those sentiments when it comes to their defensive personnel that was steamrolled Sunday night in one of the most embarrassing losses in franchise history.

If changes abound, Mel Tucker kept them close to the vest in his weekly meeting with the media.

“There are always things we can change,” Tucker said.

“There is nothing set in stone on the lineup. But the group

that we’re going to put out there we think will give us the best chance to win this game.

And so I will tell you right now, we plan on going in with the group that started the game.”

Tucker then admitted his defense wasn’t properly prepared – despite having the bye week and with their season hanging in the balance – for the massacre that occurred at Lambeau Field Sunday night.

“Obviously we were not prepared enough and our effort and everything we do needs to be better,” Tucker conceded.

When asked about the confusion that occurred on Jordy Nelson’s 73-yard touchdown, Tucker provided little clarity, refuting Tim Jennings’ asser-

tion Sunday that a communication breakdown occurred.

“I’m not exactly sure what he’s talking about. The tape didn’t show that. We saw communication on a play that resulted in a touchdown and so that’s what I saw,” he said.

Williams new punt returner: One change forthcoming when the Vikings visit Soldier Field Sunday is Chris Williams taking over the punt return job vacated when Santonio Holmes was waived. Joe DeCamillis complimented the entire blocking unit for Williams’ 101-yard kickoff return touchdown, before singling out his returner.

“He did a nice job of having a plan for the kicker at the top

of it and finishing it off. Hopefully that’s a start for him.

Chris showed some good explosion,” DeCamillis said.

Williams in Week 10 fielded his first two punts of the season, resulting in a 14-yard return and a fair catch.

Danny McCray’s missed block on a Pat O’Donnell punt that resulted in a fumble was a case of losing a one-on-one matchup, not any type of scheme or mental error, according to DeCamillis.

“There’s nobody I trust more than him,” he said.

LAKE FOREST – Jared Allen settled in behind a microphone Wednesday afternoon and proceeded to ask a favor of those seated in front of him.

“Let’s talk about the Vikings,” Allen said. “I spent all yesterday answering Packer questions.”

As eager as the Bears defensive end was to shift the focus onto Sunday’s game against his former team, it was clear there were still questions to be answered. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker had spent the previous 15 minutes defending his defense, maintaining while a unit that has surrendered 106 points in its past two games

understands it needs to be better, it didn’t make sense living in the past.

Apparently, in the brief seconds it took for Tucker and Allen to pass one another at Halas Hall, Allen got the memo that turning the page only made sense.

But four questions later, Allen was asked to play defense on behalf of Tucker, forcing him to address a topic he had hoped to avoid.

“I don’t want to sound rude at all and I appreciate what everyone does in this room,” Allen said to a room full of reporters. “Everybody’s got a job to do. But if we based our emotions and our feelings on what was written about us dayto-day, it would be the most

Bears defense ready to turn page on struggles

Sometimes, you shake your head at the silliness that goes on with the teams in this town.

Other times, you roll your eyes.

At times like these, you do both, leading to vertigo, infirmity and a standing job offer to coach the Bears.

The Chicago sports scene is a public relations nightmare right now, thanks to an oblivious football coach and a naïve basketball player.

On Monday, the day after an embarrassing, disastrous 55-14 loss to the Packers, Bears coach Marc Trestman faced the media and said that “this team and this locker room [are] in a good place.”

If by “in a good place” he meant “at the bottom of a toxic lake,” then OK. Otherwise, not OK. Very, very not OK. On Tuesday, Bulls guard Derrick Rose put an Adidas-covered foot in his mouth when he tried to explain why he has missed four games with sprained ankles.

“I think a lot of people don’t understand that when I sit out, it’s not because of this year,” he said. “I’m thinking about long term. I’m thinking about after I’m done with basketball, having graduations to go to, having meetings to go to.

“I don’t want to be in my meetings all sore or be at my son’s graduation all sore just because of something I did in the past.”

Maybe Rose was taking pity on Trestman and the Bears for the avalanche of abuse that had buried them. If so, it worked.

The city’s anger pivoted and turned full force on the point guard.

But this isn’t about selfishness or softness with Rose, as has been portrayed.

It’s about naivete. Maybe he heard someone talking about the long-term ramifications of a spinal injury, thought it sounded good and applied it to his knees and ankles. Who knows? But someone needs to be coaching him on PR as hard as Tom Thibodeau coaches him on defense.

Please don’t get me wrong.

I’m not complaining. The columnist in me is appreciative of every dumb thing that athletes and coaches say. I want unfiltered honesty. I want the pratfalls that come when people trip on their own tongues.

But is there no one close

VIEWS Rick Morrissey enough to either man to walk them through what might come up at a news conference and then to tell them that under no circumstance are they to verbalize the monumentally stupid thoughts they’re having?

Was there no one at Halas Hall who thought to tell Trestman before he faced reporters: “There are a lot of things you can say, but the one thing you can’t say is that the team is in a good place. One, it’s not true, and you know it. Two, you’re going to get barbecued for it, possibly at Lance Briggs’ restaurant. Three, we’re going to be even more of a laughingstock than we should be after getting our butts kicked by Green Bay”?

Either no one said that to Trestman or he didn’t listen.

And Trestman hasn’t struck me as someone who ignores advice.

For years now, we have heard about Rose’s team of advisers. His agent, B.J. Armstrong. The Adidas people who have carefully managed his image. His brother, Reggie, who helped mold him into the person and the player he is now. Was there no one from this group to tell him how bad it sounds when someone with a $94 million NBA contract and a $185 million shoe contract talks about saving his body for his son’s high school graduation or for a corporate meeting? It’s hard to believe that thought was birthed at Tuesday’s gathering with media members.

When Rose uttered those words to friends or family, someone should have said, “Great, now don’t ever repeat that again.”

It sounds as if people at Halas Hall are having trouble communicating. Well, good news! The team’s vice president of communications is teaching a class at Northwestern called “Sports Public Relations and Crisis Management.”

Now, if only someone would read the textbook.

Male infertility has variety of causes Dear Doctor K: My wife and I have tried to get pregnant for over a year. We’re going to be tested soon to see if anything is wrong.

I’m worried that the problem lies with me. What are some reasons for a man to be infertile?

Dear Reader: About one in seven couples in the United States is unable to conceive a child after trying for one year. The infertility is caused by either the man alone (about 40 percent of the time), by the woman alone (about 40 percent of the time) or by both partners (about 20 percent of the time). So it is possible that something about you is responsible for your wife’s difficulty with becoming pregnant.

Male infertility may be caused by a variety of problems: • Hormonal problems. For example, low levels of testosterone (the main male hormone) or thyroid hormone.

• Problems with the testicles.

These include abnormal growth or development, or damage from trauma and infections.

• Problems with the flow of sperm. This may include blocked tubes that transport sperm, or problems with ejaculation. (I’ve put an illustration showing the normal path of sperm through the

• Abnormal sperm function.

This may affect the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg.

• Exposure to toxins. Radiation, for example, or industrial chemicals.

Your evaluation will likely begin with a semen analysis. This test measures the amount and quality of your semen and the number and quality of sperm. If your semen analysis is normal, you may not need further testing.

If your semen analysis is abnormal, your doctor will take a complete medical history and test your hormone levels. The doctor will also perform a physical exam.

He or she will look for evidence of genital infections, blocked sperm tubules in the testes or shrinkage of the testicles.

Particularly if the physical examination indicates there is

a problem, various tests often are ordered. You may need an ultrasound of the testicles and scrotum to picture any possible blockages. Your sperm may be tested. The role of the sperm is to swim toward a woman’s egg and to fertilize it. The ability of the sperm to swim in semen can be studied with a microscope. So can the ability of your sperm to penetrate a hamster egg. If it can’t, it will likely not be able to penetrate a human egg.

Genetic tests may be performed. Several gene defects have been identified in recent years. Finally, a biopsy of the testicles may show any of several diseases that impair the production of sperm.

If there is a specific reason for your infertility, it may be possible to treat. If you have no treatment options, consider assisted-reproduction techniques, such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization. Problems with fertility often have a solution – with a healthy baby as a result.

Teen competes for spot as class valedictorian Dr. Wallace: I’m in a continuing battle with the “enemy” to be class valedictorian. So far in high school I have earned all As and one B. My competitor has all As and two Bs. So, at the moment, I have a very slim lead. I’m worried about a problem that might not be a problem.

That’s why I need the advice of an educator.

My “enemy’s” brother is an art teacher at our school and she has taken all the courses he has taught. Of course, her grade for each of these classes was an A. I’d like to take the art appreciation class from him, but I worry that he might give me a C in the class. This would mean I would be the salutatorian instead of valedictorian.

I really would enjoy taking this class because it is a study of the European masters in the 15th and 16th centuries, including Rubens, Goya, Matisse, Rembrandt and Da Vinci. I think it would be a wonderful class.

Should I risk taking it, or should I play it safe? – Ashley, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Dear Ashley: I would encourage you to take this class. I doubt seriously if a teacher would lower a student’s grade just to benefit a sibling.

But if it would make you feel better, discuss this possible problem with your counselor, and I’m sure you will be given the grade you earn.

Since I abstain from alcohol, it concerns me that he consumes a large amount of alcohol weekly. We have discussed marriage, but I’m not so sure he will curb his drinking after marriage. He promises that he will stop drinking after the marriage ceremony.

You can feel like that at the bridge table when you see the right play one trick too late. But sometimes, when one defender has the wrong thought, the bad result might be his partner’s fault.

How would you assess this deal? South was in six spades. West led the heart king, under which East signaled with the nine and South played his four. West now shifted to a diamond. Declarer won with dummy’s ace, drew trumps with the aid of two finesses, and claimed.

In the bidding, North might have opened two clubs. However, he knew that if his partner responded two diamonds (highly likely), he would have to rebid three diamonds, then continue with four clubs and five clubs to describe his distribution. Hoping to save some bidding space, North opened one diamond, confident someone else would bid given his major-suit shortages.

South jumped to four spades to show an eight-card suit and a relatively weak hand. North then used Blackwood and settled his partner into six spades.

Who was at fault for the slam’s making? It looks like West. East intended his high heart at trick one to be encouraging, but West thought it was a suit-preference signal asking for a diamond shift because East had a diamond void.

East saw that two rounds of hearts, forcing dummy to ruff, would make it impossible for South to avoid a trump loser. East should have overtaken the heart king at trick one and returned a heart.

Black is the new white in kitchens

Kitchens are going over to the dark side.

Black is replacing white or gray as the go-to choice for trophy kitchens across the country. “Kitchen noir” is also trending on social media sites such as Pinterest and in the portfolios of highend kitchen designers, where trends often are hatched.

Customers are looking for something their neighbors don’t have yet, designers say. Black kitchens appeal to both men and women. Black custom cabinets are growing in popularity, as are black counters, islands, flooring and wall colors. Designers say that black is moody and romantic and brings drama to the room in the house where everyone likes to hang out.

“My clients are saying they want something different,” says Maria Stapperfenne, a kitchen designer in New Jersey who is president-elect of the National Kitchen & Bath Association. “They want something dramatic and bold. And they don’t want what their mother had.”

Ultimately, Gross said, it’s crucial to keep clothing storage simple. “When in doubt, go to the Container Store,” she said. “Racks, shelving units, boxes and bins will help you stay organized, whether you’re installing them inside or outside of your built-in closet.”

One of her go-to tips for making any closet look larger is to add strips of LED lights to its interior. “It adds a hint of luxury,” she said. “It looks very stylized.”

Alexandria, Va., said she shies away from wardrobes (too hefty) and garment racks (too rickety), so she recommends crafting an open closet system with a few pipes, shelves and rods from a hardware store.

“Pinterest has a ton of instruction boards for ways to assemble them against a wall,” she said. “When you’re ready to leave the apartment, just patch it up.”

Ludwick frequently uses Pinterest for creative storage ideas. That’s where she discovered the design trick of lining subtle strips of trim to the wall to hang high heels. And for flats, try Pegboards or narrow pieces of wood with coathook knobs, she said. If there’s space inside your closet, such boards can be added there to keep visual clutter at a minimum.

Be careful that your solution not look too crafty. Steer clear of zip-up cloth wardrobe units or anything that comes with mesh – they’re better for dorm living or in-drawer (i.e., out-of-sight) storage. And perhaps most important, make sure the solution you choose is sturdy and will truly save you time while getting dressed.

“If the shelves are flimsy and fall apart on you in the morning, forget it,” Gross said. “That will ruin your day fast.”
