Pair charged with damaging property

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Two West Chicago men face charges of criminal damage to property and criminal damage to government property after police say damage was caused to a private business and cityowned property in Batavia.

Edgar R. Aguilar, 24, of the 200 block of Neltnor Boulevard in West Chicago, and Roberto Gonzalez, of the 29W100 block of Donald Drive, also in West Chicago, each face one count of criminal damage to government property, a Class 3 felony, and one count of criminal damage to property, a Class 4 felony, according to

a news release from the police department.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight Oct. 18 in the 0-99 block of North River Street in Batavia.

Police responded to a report of damage to the front door of a private business at 17 N. River St. Police found that a large cement garbage can, which was later determined to be property of the

city of Batavia, had been smashed through the front door, states the release.

The garbage can was rolled down the pedestrian stairs of the city parking deck located at State Street and North River Street before being smashed into the window.

The damage to the city’s property included the garbage can, as well as the stairwell on the parking deck.

No burglary occurred, and police Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said he did not know the motive.

“What I suspect happened is they were heading back to their car, and they were just being stupid. They basically rolled this can down the

stairs,” he said. “Fortunately, no one was coming up the stairs or coming around the corner.”

Mazza said the can rolled across North River Street and crashed into the door of the business.

The two men then got into their car and left, he said.

Police estimated damage to the door of the business, alone, to be about $1,200.

Mazza said police tracked down the two men through a witness and video surveillance images.

Both Aguilar and Gonzalez have posted bail and are scheduled to appear in court Dec. 17 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles.

Dunkin’ in process to build new store

“That will work out real good for some of the construction folks on the Anderson Road extension and the bridge,” Anderson said. “The workers who are building it will have another place to get a fresh coffee and doughnuts and breakfast.”

Elburn Building Commissioner Tom Brennan said Jewel is reviewing the architecture and must sign off on it.

“It is contingent that it match the facades of buildings in the Elburn Crossing

subdivision,” Brennan said.

“This is lot 3, which Jewel owns. They want it to blend in like the bank does.”

The special-use request is tentatively scheduled to go to the Village Board at its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Planning Commission Chairman Jeffrey Metcalf said.

“They will take our recommendation under advisement,” Metcalf said, adding he expected it to be approved.

Metcalf said the architectural design as proposed will blend in with existing architecture in color and design.

Navy League to hold monthly dinner meeting

ELBURN – The potential addition of a Dunkin’ Donuts in Elburn has local officials hopeful the deal will go through.

The iconic doughnut and coffee shop is proposed for a vacant lot by Jewel-Osco on Route 47 by the Elburn Crossing subdivision.

The Planning Commission recently approved a drivethru special use for the project.

“The village can’t wait to welcome Dunkin’ to our community,” Village Administrator Erin Willrett said in an email.

Village President David Anderson said the Dunkin’ will give residents and others

body’s expectations are, going out of their way to make sure everything blends in very well,” Metcalf said. “We are extremely enthused. This is a very nice addition to what is there in the strip center now. ... I just think it’s going to fit really well right there.”

Metcalf predicted it would a successful Dunkin’ Donuts, with support from Elburn traffic and traffic coming from DeKalb on Route 38, as well as north and south traffic going to the Metra station.

“It will be very visible from those portals,” Metcalf said. “I’m real excited about it and the jobs we hope it creates. Every time there is something new coming into town, we get excited as planning commissioners, because it’s rare and we welcome it.”

Personally, Metcalf likes chocolate frosted donuts from Dunkin’ as well as the coffee.

“I love the coffee – oh my gosh – I like it nice and rich, strong coffee with cream,” Metcalf said. “And the doughnuts. I like straight-up chocolate. I’m a basic guy, nothing too fancy.”

Coat drive underway GENEVA – Good Cents Children again will have a coat drive to benefit the children of Channing Memorial School in Elgin.

New and gently used coats and jackets will be collected for the school’s children.

Recipients are often homeless, victims of domestic violence or children of immigrants arriving in the area with no warm clothing.

Board OKs Sauceda as interim Animal Control administrator

At Chairman Chris Lauzen’s recommendation, the Kane County Board on Tuesday approved Robert Sauceda as interim Animal Control administrator at an annual salary Robert Sauceda of $65,000.

Lauzen responded to questions about whether the interim appointment means a search will be launched to fill the position permanently.

He said that is not his intention.

Making Sauceda an interim administrator was a nod to those who didn’t feel fully confident in supporting the nomination, Lauzen said.

Sauceda will have 12 months to demonstrate his performance, Lauzen said.

Maggie Auger, R-Algonquin, voting “present.” Michael Donahue, R-Geneva, and Jesse Vazquez, D-Aurora, opposed the motion.

Donahue said he doesn’t understand what has changed since board members rejected Sauceda’s appointment earlier this year.

“The issues that prevailed in January when discussed in executive session prevail today,” Donahue said.

Michael Kenyon, R-South Elgin, said he has been disappointed by past Animal Control directors but believes Lauzen will make sure Sauceda will do the job properly.

“This chairman has put his name on the line,” Kenyon said. “I think it might not be a bad thing to give the young man a chance.”

“I personally believe as this grows, the value of Kane County Connected will be priceless,” Ford said.

The use of social media – which includes Google+, Twitter and YouTube – should appeal to the younger generation, County Board member Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts, said.

The initiative is funded by savings in other areas, Lauzen said, noting the county doesn’t have a public relations employee or county administrator.

AURORA – Venturing Crew 88 will have an open house at 7 p.m. Tuesday at New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora.

The crew is for those with special needs, ages 14 to 21.

GENEVA – Residents of Kane County have a new way to connect with others who share their interests.

Kane County has launched Kane County Connected, a social media effort that aims to build communities.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen stressed to reporters Tuesday that Kane County Connected is for and about the citizens.

“This is not about propaganda for the county,” he said, describing it as a way to make it a little more fun to live in Kane County.

Since July, Kane County Connected has launched 10 networks: athletes, employers, gardeners, global ambassadors, green advocates, moms and dads, pet owners, taxpayers, youth and veterans.

County Board approves letter supporting interchange upgrade

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a document declaring its support of an upgrade to the Interstate 88 interchange in Sugar Grove.

The board passed the letter of intent as part of its consent agenda.

The letter is between the county, village of Sugar Grove,

Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and the Illinois Department of Transportation about the proposed interchange expansion at I-88 and Route 47.

County officials have said the letter does not commit the county to funding, but it will serve as a basis for the development of a future intergovernmental agreement for the project.

The project – turning the intersection into a full inter-

change – is expected to cost nearly $20 million.

Officials have said the tollway is expected to contribute 50 percent of the total cost, and IDOT is expected to kick in 25 percent. Sugar Grove and Kane County would share the remaining 25 percent.

The project is about five years out from the beginning of construction, officials have said.

“I love this community,” a tearful Stith said. “And I love our schools. And I love the students, and I’m very very proud of the work my board members have done. Thank you.”

The chamber surprised Gaines by also awarding her a second Wood Award. The Chamber has only given a double award to two married couples in the past.

Gaines, who has been with the chamber for 36 years and president for 33 years, was credited for her influence in accommodating growth while maintaining the city’s histor-

ic ambiance.

Gaines has been instrumental in keeping alive the 64-year tradition of Swedish Days and has been the driving force behind the Festival of the Vine, Geneva Arts Fair, Christmas Walk and took ownership, more than 25 years ago, of the Christmas House Tour from another organization.

Mayor Kevin Burns in his nomination video, said Gaines shows “extraordinary commitment, dedication, passion and unyielding contribution of time and talent to make our community very special.”

Lebin said Gaines’ contribution to the community “has

made it a better place to live, a better place to work and a better replace to have fun.”

Gaines’ work in promoting the city and its festivals also garnered her a proclamation from Gov. Pat Quinn, who declared Tuesday as Jean Gaines Day in the state of Illinois.

“We worked for the past year to make this a surprise for you, Jean,” Lebin said, “which was difficult, but I think we accomplished our goal. You are … the epitome of what a Wood Award winner should be.”

Gaines thanked them for the award. Then she said, “I’m still not retiring.”

t was the year of the woman Tuesday night as the Geneva Chamber of Commerce named two recipients of its annual Wood Award for community service, school board member Mary Stith and – a little closer to home – its own president Jean Gaines.

“Both Jean Gaines and Mary Stith have shown us what it means to be excellent,” said Scott Lebin, chairman of the chamber board, to a crowd of 250 at Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva.

Amid tears and surprised gasps, first Stith was recognized for her longtime volunteerism in supporting Geneva children and the community.

While her four children were in school, Stith volunteered for the PTO as a committee member, chairwoman and on the executive board, including being a host family twice for the AFS Intercultural Program.

Stith volunteered for six years at the Geneva Academic Foundation, serving as president in 1998. Currently, she is serving her third term on the school board, which also entails her attending auxiliary district meetings as the liaison.

“Ever since I met her in the Geneva Mothers Club meeting nearly 25 years ago, she has been selflessly giving of herself,” Mary Jane Johnson of Geneva said in a video of her nomination. “She has opened her heart and her home to the Geneva community … She has always given her very best.”

“Her commitment has been incredible,” said Geneva High School Principal Tom Rogers in the same video.

“Her commitment to the Geneva school system and to our community has been truly admirable. And I would encourage younger parents in the community – if you’re looking for someone to emulate, this is your example.”

Former superintendent Michael Jacoby of Geneva put it more simply: “You are one of Geneva’s best.”

North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said he looked forward to the building being leased.

“We hope to have a great number of employees spending their money here,” Berman said. “I think this is the perfect site for the building.”

Conley Outreach Community Services is seeking bell ringers for the holiday season in western Kane County.

Carol Werdin Alfrey, executive director of the organization, said the group has been setting up bell ringing for about a decade in front of several locations in the Kaneland area, which includes Sugar Grove, Elburn, Kaneville, Maple Park, Virgil and Big Rock.

Werdin Alfrey said because the Kaneland area falls outside of the nearby Salvation Army Corps boundaries, nonprofit organizations such as Conley Outreach pick up bell-ringing services in those areas.

Last year, bell ringers helped raise more than

$4,600, which remains local, she said.

“It all stays for those families in our coverage area,” Werdin Alfrey said. “It helps with rent, utility bills, mortgages, transportation costs ... typically it is kind of a necessity-of-life thing.”

In honor of Troop One’s 100th year anniversary, this year’s parade committee selected the troop to represent the parade as grand marshals, according to a news release. Past troop alumni who are interested and available

A warrant has been issued for an 18-year-old St. Charles man in connection to several vehicle burglaries that occurred in July in Geneva.

Malibu Barstow, whose last known address was in the 600 block of Pheasant Trail, St. Charles, faces 10 counts of felony burglary charges and six criminal damage to property charges after damaging some of the vehicles.

According to court records, Barstow is accused of trying to break into several vehicles in the 800 block of Foxwood Circle, the 1000 block of Brentwood Place, the 800 block of Longmeadow Drive, the 1100 block of Hill Road and others. The vehicles were broken into on or around July 7, court documents state.

Barstow, who also faces two drug charges, is due in court today.

He was charged with possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia in St. Charles on June 14, court records show.

Barstow previously was charged with residential burglary in Elgin, which occurred Oct. 28, 2012. Court records state that he intended to burglarize a home in the 1100 block of Championship Drive in Elgin.

Court records also show that Barstow was charged Oct. 31, 2012, in St. Charles for felony possession of the controlled substance Alprazolam, also known as Xanax.

Campus kicks off season with lights

Mooseheart’s fourth annual Holiday Lights show will feature more lights than in past years.

“It’s becoming a yearly tradition for people,” Mooseheart Executive Director Gary Urwiler said. “Last year, we had more than 8,000 people come through, and our goal this year is more than 10,000 people.”

The show, featuring a 1.8mile lighted tour of the century-old campus, will operate from 5 to 9 p.m. from Nov. 29 through Dec. 31.

Tickets are $10 a vehicle, with 3-D glasses available to further enhance the show available for $1 a pair.

PG-13 movies exceed R rating for violence, study says

By BRADY DENNIS The Washington Post The prevalence of gun violence in top PG-13 movies has more than tripled since the rating was introduced in the mid-1980s, and last year it eclipsed even the amount in R-rated movies, according to findings published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

“I think most parents would be surprised to learn that,” said Brad Bushman, a professor of communication and psychology at Ohio State University and one of the study’s authors. “We were pretty shocked.”

The authors said their findings are particularly troubling given considerable research into what has been called the “weapons effect,” which suggests that

depiction of gun violence in media could lead to more aggressive behavior in the real world.

“We know that movies teach children how adults behave, and they make gun use appear exciting and attractive,” said Dan Romer, another co-author and the director of the Adolescent Communication Institute of the Annenberg Public Policy Center in Pennsylvania.

To determine how violence – and specifically gun violence – has changed in films over time, researchers chose 945 films sampled from the 30 top-grossing releases each year from 1950 to 2012. Coders sifted through the movies, noting violent sequences.

Researchers said they excluded violence not intend-

ed to harm anyone, such as accidents and run-of-the-mill sports aggression. They also excluded activities such as hunting and the use of large-scale weapons such as rocket-propelled grenades and military artillery.

In the end, they found that violence in films had more than doubled since 1950, and that violence had tripled in PG-13 films over the past quarter-century. In addition, while PG-13 movies initially had only about as much violence as G- and PG-rated films, since 2009 they have contained as much violence as R-rated films, or more.

According to the Motion Picture Association of America’s rating system, “there may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic

and extreme or persistent violence.” By comparison, an R-rated movie could contain “intense or persistent violence.”

An MPAA spokeswoman declined to comment Monday’s study but referred to information about how the group determines ratings at the website FilmRatings. com. The site says that while the ratings are meant to help guide parents about a movie’s content, “it’s ultimately up to you to decide whether a movie is suitable for your family.”

The findings in Monday’s study, the authors write, are “troubling given the large body of research evidence showing that violent media can have harmful effects on children and youth.”

While many scholars

agree with that conclusion, others have questioned the link between media violence and real-world violence.

Romer and Bushman emphasized that their findings are not intended to pin violent behavior in young people on increased violence at the movies.

But they said the MPAA should at least re-evaluate how it rates films with growing amounts of guns and gore.

“I’m not a policymaker. I don’t really care what adults see,” Bushman said. “What I do care about is children exposed to age-inappropriate media. ... Maybe films that contain excessive gun violence should have an R rating.”

Added Romer: “We think that’s pretty reasonable.”

Federal insurance exchange unlikely to meet target date

By AMY GOLDSTEIN, JULIET EILPERIN and LENA H. SUN The Washington Post WASHINGTON – Software problems with the federal online health insurance exchange, especially in handling high volumes, are proving so stubborn that the system is unlikely to work fully by the end of the month as the White House has promised, according to an official with knowledge of the project The exchange is balking when more than 20,000 to 30,000 people attempt to use it at the same time – about half its intended capacity, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose internal information. And the main contractor who built the site, CGI Federal, has been able to fix only about six of every 10 defects.

Government workers and technical contractors racing to repair the website have concluded, the official said, that the only way for large numbers of Americans to enroll in the health-care plans soon is by using other means so that the online system isn’t overburdened.

This inside view of the halting nature of HealthCare.gov repairs is emerging as the in-

surance industry is working behind the scenes on contingency plans, in case the site continues to have problems.

And it calls into question the repeated assurances by the White House and other top officials that the insurance exchange will work smoothly for the vast majority of Americans

by Nov. 30. Speaking in Dallas a week ago, President Barack Obama said the “website is already better than it was at the beginning of October, and by the end of this month, we anticipate that it is going to be working the way it is supposed to, all right?” The need for what the official called a “divide-and-conquer strategy” for enrollment puts more emphasis on alternate methods for buying health plans.

These methods include federal call centers and insurance companies that sell policies directly to customers – paths that are hobbled for now by some of the same technical problems affecting the federal website.

Julie Bataille, director of communications at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which is part of the Health and Human Services Department, said: “We are working 24/7 to make improvements so that by the end

of the month the site is working smoothly for the vast majority of users. We are making progress, including fixes to reduce error rates and get the site moving faster.

“The challenges we are addressing today,” she said, “are a snapshot of Nov. 12th, not Nov. 30th.”

Meanwhile, pressure intensified Tuesday on the Obama administration to address the growing complaints of Americans whose individual insurance policies are being canceled because they do not comply with new government rules. The magazine Ozy published a video interview with former President Bill Clinton saying Obama must “honor the commitment” he made to Americans they could keep their insurance – even if it requires a change in law.

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger said she and her counterparts in other states have offered suggestions to the White House on how best to address this problem of canceled policies. The most obvious solution, she said, would be to allow customers to renew policies early to let them stay in effect until Nov. 2014. But that would come with a trade-off, she said: Those people would not receive federal

subsidies they might be eligible for if they bought a plan on the exchange.

She said that she and other insurance commissioners are trying to address consumers’ desire to use the federal exchange. “Honestly,” she said, “it’s just a big mess right now. ... I don’t know what to tell people.”

Debate over how to respond to Americans who are irate about losing their insurance is intensifying on Capitol Hill.

The House plans to vote this week on a bill introduced by Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., that would extend this year’s insurance plans for a year. On Tuesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said she is co-sponsoring a bill with Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., that would require insurers to offer 2013 plans on the individual market indefinitely.

On Wednesday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is set to grill several high-ranking administration technology officials about the problems affecting the HealthCare.gov.

The volume problems mean that some people face frozen computer screens when they try to enter information – and then get timeout errors, said

the official with knowledge of the project.

Call centers have had problems, too. Within the network of 17 federally sponsored call locations staffed by more than 10,000 people, consumers are discovering that telephone representatives lack the authority to correct errors in online applications. And sometimes, consumers with more than routine questions are promised that specialists will call them back, but the calls never come.

Insurance companies, which have been pressing the White House for greater ability to sign up customers directly, are stuck at the moment, unable to complete enrollments.

That is because they must connect with the federal online system to determine whether customers’ incomes qualify them for tax credits to help pay for their insurance – a part of the system that does not work.

According to the official, workers are trying to streamline the computer system so that it can handle outside queries from insurers and the call centers about whether people are eligible for subsidies.

Technical workers hope to have this part of the system working within two to three weeks.

By CECILIA KANG and HAYLEY TSUKAYAMA The Washington Post WASHINGTON – As consumers increasingly turn to the Internet for their television, members of Congress are looking for ways to support the trend and encourage industry competition.

Sen. John Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., introduced a bill Tuesday that could greatly expand the video libraries of online services such as Netflix, Hulu and Aereo, giving them the same access to programs that cable and satellite firms are guaranteed today.

That means an Internet service such as YouTube would be able to negotiate deals to distribute live sports and network prime-time shows such

as “Scandal” by paying the same sorts of licensing fees that cable and satellite operators give to local broadcasters.

Analysts say the proposal will face steep challenges from the power lobbying arms of cable firms, which hope to maintain the industry’s bundling model.

No vote has been scheduled, and industry observers doubt the bill will advance during a time of congressional gridlock.

Some lawmakers will point to the surge in online video viewing as evidence of markets working well without new government rules.

“We don’t need another layer of regulation when we already have mountains of red tape covering the marketplace,” said Adam Thierer, a senior research fellow at the free-market think tank Merca-

tus Center.

The growing importance of the Web-based entertainment providers was highlighted this week in a new report showing half of all broadband Internet traffic in North America comes from YouTube and Netflix. YouTube also dominates mobile Internet video traffic, according to the report from Sandvine, a broadband research firm. Netflix alone has 30 million subscribers in the United States – almost 10 million more than the biggest cable television operator, Comcast.

But there are still many programs a consumer can get only through cable or satellite firms. Rockefeller said too many powerful cable and media firms are trying to edge out new online rivals through anticompetitive means.

T. CHARLES – Hannah Zimmer developed an interest in physical therapy within the past year, as the practice benefited her recovery from swimming-related injuries.

Overuse of her shoulder and back muscles sent the St. Charles North senior into a pattern of “positive results and positive experiences” with physical therapists. Next year, Zimmer plans to study kinesiology at Illinois-Chicago on her way to pursuing her PT certification in graduate school.

Until then, Zimmer is content to comfort the North Stars in other ways, namely as a captain and mentor for a young group eyeing a breakthrough at Saturday’s St. Charles East Sectional.

“She’s been really inspirational,” sophomore Monica Guyett said. “When we’re having tough days, just having us focus on what we’re doing and focus on the basics instead of, like, getting crazy.”

Class 3A teams in deep against Eagles Last week’s second-round playoff opponent for the Aurora Christian football team, Oregon, threw for 29 yards.

Begrudgingly, chasing a big lead, the Hawks attempted six passes Saturday night as Aurora Christian rolled to a 49-20 victory.

That brings the Eagles to this Saturday’s 3A state quarterfinal at Seneca, which blew out host Robeson Saturday in Chicago, 46-6.

And how many passes did the Fighting Irish utilize in that win? Zero.

Welcome to the Class 3A playoffs, where Aurora Christian’s multitiered offense and deluxe passing attack stand out like a sore thumb, or more to the point, like Don Beebe’s Super Bowl ring-adorned finger.

Eagles quarterback Austin Bray threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 pass attempts against an Oregon team that was overwhelmed by Aurora Christian’s penchant for downfield strikes.

Look for Seneca to be similarly confounded about how to slow Bray and Co. this weekend.

The point here isn’t to rag on 3A football, which certainly has it share of quality, hard-nosed athletes and clever coaches.

But Aurora Christian

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab is such an outlier when it comes to teams in that class, it’s not hard to understand why the Eagles have dominated 3A in recent years, and could well three-peat as state champions come Nov. 29 in DeKalb.

It starts with coaching.

By now, Beebe and his staff have proven to be terrific strategists, motivators and player developers. And yes, Beebe’s name recognition and reputation as an offensive guru draws some talent to Aurora Christian that a school of its size wouldn’t typically attract.

Then there’s the schedule Aurora Christian plays as part of the Suburban Christian Conference (and soon-to-be-Chicago Catholic League). Battling larger, Chicago area competition such as Montini, Marmion and St. Francis during the course of a season broadens the Eagles in a way that can’t be replicated in the generally rural, small-school conferences from which most of the 3A playoff field hails.

The Eagles have highly skilled personnel and run routes with precision. For a team that hasn’t dealt with a

sophisticated passing game, limiting an offense like the Eagles’ – especially when factoring in a strong running game that also must be accounted for – is quite the assignment.

That’s why Beebe has long maintained, as long as Aurora Christian can win five or six regular season games and make the playoffs, he’ll take his chances.

The Eagles won’t have a cake-walk to a state title.

It’d be very surprising to see Seneca take down the Eagles, but undefeated Winnebago could make for a substantial challenge in the semifinals.

Still, with Aurora Christian seemingly getting healthier by the week, forget the seedings. The Eagles have to be considered a favorite to three-peat.

Class 3A teams’ best bet against Aurora Christian this time of year is nasty weather conditions that make success through the air harder to come by.

Whether even an extreme act of nature would be enough to keep the Eagles from another 3A state title this month is up for debate.

Haggerty helped the defending 3A state champion Spartans earn another trip to Redbird Arena this weekend with big nights last week in St. Francis’ wins against Coal City and Chicago Christian. Haggerty, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports editor Jay Schwab after the Spartans’ 25-10, 25-15 win Saturday against Chicago Christian in the IHSA Class 3A Joliet Catholic Supersectional. The following is an edited transcript: What does it mean to be going back to state?

It’s always been my dream, seeing my sisters Meghan and Maddie going there, so that was always my

dream when I was younger. So going back there twice is going to be awesome. I’m so excited, obviously to win, hopefully. I’m really excited just to be down there again.

How long did it take you to regroup emotionally after your sister got hurt?

It took me about a few days, just to get used to the concept that she wasn’t going to be playing with us anymore. It was really hard but I had to deal with it because I knew she was going to be on the bench, helping me through it. She kind of calmed me down on the court so having her on the bench with us helped us a lot because she was a big leader on the team.

If you had to pick someone on your team to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

I would say Lisa Mordell. She’s very smart and she will help anyone before herself.

DeKALB – Since beating Eastern Illinois in its home opener in Week 3, Northern Illinois’ defense has given up fewer total yards in each subsequent game.

The total has dropped from 577 yards in the 43-39 win over EIU to a season-low 324 yards Nov. 2 against UMass.

But tonight comes the biggest test of the season for coordinator Jay Niemann’s defense when quarterback Keith Wenning and 9-1 Ball State visit Huskie Stadium.

The Cardinals would clinch the Mid-American Conference West Division championship with a win, and would effectively end the Huskies’ BCS bowl hopes.

Wenning, who has thrown for 3,164 yards and 27 touchdowns, will be the best quarterback NIU has played since Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garoppolo, and he’s arguably better.

Garoppolo torched NIU’s defense, throwing for 450 yards back in Week 4 as the Panthers nearly pulled off the upset.

And Wenning has plenty of weapons at his disposal.

“They run it, they’re close to 50-50 run-pass,” he said. “It’s something that you’ve got to go ahead and defend both.”

In the secondary, Carey said he was “hopeful” cornerback Sean Evans would play this week. Evans has missed the past three games with a knee injury.

One cornerback who has stepped into a bigger role as the season has progressed is Logan, who has climbed up the depth chart and has been playing the best ball of any corner, Carey said.

The Columbia, Mo., native has been starting alongside Jhony Faustin and has six pass breakups on the season.

“It’s just him getting more reps and starting to get his confidence back there. I know he didn’t play a whole lot last year, but the more reps he gets the more confidence he gets back there,” NIU cornerbacks coach Kelvin Sigler said. “That’s one thing with the secondary, we kind of push each other, try and make each other better.

“It kind of started off slow at first but I think they’re starting to pick it up. We’ve been getting better each week.”

Special to The Washington Post There’s something about the music you fall in love with as a teenager. The songs may not be as sophisticated as those you discover later in life, but they trigger an emotional response every time you hear them. That’s as true for Aaron Neville as it is for you or me. Neville has won fame for his Grammy Award-winning duets with Linda Ronstadt and Trisha Yearwood, and his solo hits and his albums with the Neville Brothers. But the records he most likes to talk about are the 45s he first heard in New Orleans in the mid-1950s.

“I used to sing along to my parents’ records by Nat King Cole, Charles Brown and Johnny Ace,” Neville recalls, “but when I heard those doo-wop records by Sonny Til and the Orioles or Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters or Pookie Hudson and the Spaniels, that was something different. Those guys were my age; they were like me.

When you get older, you think about music more, but back then you’re just taking it as it comes. That’s the age of innocence and change, and music helps soothe the soul.”

Now he performs songs off his latest album, “My True Story,” a celebration of the doo-wop songs of his youth. A DVD accompanies the album and features a re-creation of an event from his adolescence: He and his backup singers are standing around a blazing fire in a trash can, singing an a cappella version of the Drifters’ “Ruby Baby.”

“My brother Art is three years older than me, and he had a group that sang on the street corners,” Neville says by phone from his home in New York’s Greenwich Village. “When I was 12 and tried to sing with them,

But one day when they were singing a Clyde McPhatter song, he said, ‘Kevin’ — he called me Kevin — ‘Kevin, can you hit this note?’ I hit it, no doubt, and after that they let me sing with them. The grocer near the school would have the fire going in a trash can; we’d gather around and sing, snapping our fingers.”

The past decade has been rough one for Neville, 72. He lost his New Orleans home to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

He lost Joel, his wife of 48 years, to cancer in 2007. The optimistic, innocent songs from his youth, he says, have provided a welcome refuge from the turbulence of adulthood.

“A lot of those songs came from New York,” Neville says, “but when I was 15, I didn’t know where they came from, and I didn’t care.

I only care that they touched my heart and touched my soul. We’d sing those songs everywhere: in the park, on the street corner and in the boys’ room at school.”

“My True Story” was co-produced by the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards and features musicians drawn from the bands of Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Bill Frisell and Dave Alvin. These veteran performers, many of them close to Neville’s age, imbue these songs of adolescent innocence and desire with the aura of experience. Instead of a youthful desire for perfect love, there’s a yearning to again believe that love can be perfect.

“We did them our way,” Neville says. “We didn’t want to do them the same way the original artists did them. The music has been living in me all these years. You hear a little doo-wop on everything I do, whether it’s Linda Ronstadt, the Neville Brothers or my solo records. You can hear in the stuff I do with my voice: that tenderness, that little yodel. And everything I’ve done affects how I sing doo-wop now.”

The “My True Story” DVD includes footage from a concert at Brooklyn Bowl,

a giant New York bowling alley. Halfway through, Neville invites Paul Simon onstage. Accompanied only

by Tony Scherr’s upright bass and Charles Neville’s tenor saxophone, the two singers blend gorgeously on the ballad harmonies of Robert & Johnny’s 1958 hit, “We Belong Together.” It sounds like a hymn.

“It was like we grew up on the same block, listening to the same songs,” Neville says. “Paul said ‘We Belong Together’ was one of the first songs he and Art Garfunkel worked up back in the day, and I said that was one of the first songs I did with my brother Art.” As teenagers they lived 1,300 miles apart, but they each had their own Art. Not a day goes by that I don’t receive letters and emails from readers who are upset enough to write because they haven’t received a thank-you note for a birthday, graduation, wedding or holiday gift they sent. Dear Reader: Getting rid of warts can be a challenge. Fortunately, the more effective treatments are the simplest.

Warts occur when skin cells grow faster than normal because they are infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV). (I’ve put an illustration of wart anatomy on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Warts aren’t highly contagious, but they can spread from person to person by direct contact, mainly through breaks in the skin. Warts on one part of the body can also spread to other areas.

Warts are generally harmless and often disappear on their own over time. As I write this column, I’m watching a wart on my foot get smaller with no treatment and hoping it will just disappear. So “watchful waiting” is definitely an option for new warts.

On the other hand, some warts disappear only to later reappear.

Even when warts disappear completely, there still is some virus left in the skin cells. Treating a wart can help lower the risk of recurrence.

If you’d prefer not to wait it out, there are two treatment options you can try yourself:

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Salicylic acid, the main ingredient in aspirin, is a good first choice. It costs little, has minimal side effects and comes in various over-the-counter preparations, including liquids, gels and patches.

Soak the wart for 10 to 15 minutes, file away the dead warty skin with an emery board or pumice stone, and apply the salicylic acid.

Do this once or twice a day for 12 weeks.

• Duct tape. This low-risk, low-tech approach may sound suspect, but it’s worth a try.

Wear a patch of duct tape over your wart for six days. Remove the patch, soak and file the wart, and leave it uncovered overnight. Reapply the tape in the morning and leave it in place for another six days. Repeat for two months or until the wart disappears. Use silver duct tape, which is stickier and has a particular kind of adhesive. (I’m repeating the advice that my skin specialist colleagues give patients. Personally, I wouldn’t have the patience for this.)

There are various treatments

that doctors can give you in the office: • With freezing (cryotherapy), a clinician swabs or sprays liquid nitrogen onto the wart.

The extreme cold burns the skin, causing pain, redness and usually a blister. Getting rid of the wart can take three or four treatments, although it’s sometimes successful with just one.

• Various other solutions that “kill” warts can be applied by the doctor. They all have strange names: imiquimod, cantharidin, tretinoin, 5-fluorouracil. Don’t try to pronounce them – that’s one of the things you pay your doctor to do.

Warts that don’t respond to standard therapies may need treatment with prescription drugs or with a “zapping and cutting” procedure done under local anesthesia.

Warts are an annoyance. I’ve had a dermatologist freeze several I’ve gotten over the years. The one I’m watching now started to shrink pretty quickly on its own.

Maybe it knew what was coming.

Dr. Wallace: My mom and dad are super strict about the guys I date and where we are going when we go out.

I’m 17, and I think they are treating me like I’m in middle school.

My mom, especially, is paranoid that I might get involved sexually with a guy. I am a virgin and I plan to stay that way, but I still get the “staying a virgin” lecture every time I go out with a guy.

Our family is extremely religious, so I also firmly believe that sex should be saved for after marriage. That’s why it bothers me so much that I still get these lectures. It’s like she thinks she has to remind me every time I go out or else I’m liable to give in.

Now comes the ironic part of the story. Yesterday, I was looking for my social security card in my mom’s desk and I stumbled upon my parents’ marriage license. They were married in January 1996 and I was born in April 1996. That means that my mom was already pregnant when she married my dad.

This was a complete shock to me because my folks are the most God-fearing couple on this earth.

Do you think I should let my mom know that I know this tasty bit of info the next time she encourages me to stay pure, or should I file it away to use at a later date if necessary?

That’s playing a mean little game – hardly befitting a young woman who considers herself religious.

What matters most, of course, is that your parents have been loving and caring, but I can understand your being disconcerted by the news of your birth.

Talk to them about it.

Bring it out into the open – not angrily or judgmentally, but with honesty and maturity.

Your parents cannot effectively guide your behavior without coming clean about their own.

Dr. Wallace: Last school year, a boy at my school committed suicide. This year, another male student attempted suicide, but lived. Both boys shot themselves.

Why is it always the guys who kill themselves and not the girls?

– Sydney, Miami, Fla. Dear Sydney: Actually, more girls attempt suicide than boys. It’s just that boys are more likely to be successful.

This is because boys tend to use more deadly methods such as shooting themselves or instigating automobile accidents, according to Dr. Lillian Beard, clinical professor of child health and development at the George Washington University School of Medicine.

Girls more commonly take an overdose of something, which can be treated if it’s discovered in time.

Dear Abby: With the holidays approaching, a reminder is in order. People: Don’t forget those thank-you notes! I don’t mean an email, but a REAL, honest-to-gosh thank-you note sent through the mail with postage.

My mother always told me that a gift is not truly yours until a proper thank-you has been sent.

She said it “completed the transfer.” I was not allowed to play with the item or use it until that note was written.

This is especially true for young people today, who seemingly were not taught this in school or by their parents. Very young children can draw a picture, and the parent can add a line to say it was drawn to express thanks.

I can’t tell you how many parents comment on the absence of this display of etiquette. Good manners are never out of date.

They are noticed and appreciated.

David Bird from England has written more than 100 bridge books. He specializes in humor, particularly about the monks of St. Titus. But now he has published a second book about the staff and pupils of Cholmeley School, “The Headmaster, the Matron and the Scissors Coup” (Weidenfeld & Nicolson). Mixed in with the humorous stories are instructive deals, many sent to Bird by Tim Bourke from Australia.

In this deal from the book, how should the play and defense go in four spades? West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king.

East’s weak two-heart opening would not please a purist, because it has two first-round controls. But nowadays, everyone pre-empts with the faintest excuse, and here East was hoping he might shut out the spade suit. However, South jumped to four spades, the contract he hoped he could make.

West led the heart ace and continued with the heart king.

South, the Headmaster, ruffed, cashed the spade ace, and led the spade queen. West, the Matron, won with her king and paused.

Her partner had discarded the club two and club five, discouraging in that suit. So West shifted to a diamond. East won with his ace and led another heart, which promoted West’s spade 10 to the setting trick.

East spotted how the contract could have been made. At trick two, South should have discarded his diamond king, cutting the communications between the defenders – a textbook Scissors Coup.

And now you know the deal that begat the title of the book.

‘Almost, Maine’ set at Kaneland High School

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – First-time director Christina Staker is preparing for Kaneland High School’s presentation of “Almost, Maine,” the school’s fall play, which runs Friday through Sunday at the school, at 47W326 Keslinger Road in Maple Park.

Staker said the play is presented in a series of vignettes, with events happening in the same town of Almost in Maine.

She said it’s “centered around the concept of love and different obstacles that come with the stages of love.”

She said the format allows many actors to shine.

“There are not really any leads, because they’re all in separate stories,” she said.

Those in the performance, she said, are mostly juniors and seniors, as well as one sophomore – Nicole DiSandro. Staker said DiSandro “has the potential to become really strong in the future.”

Also, Staker said two of the boys in the performance – Mitch Bateman and James Tockstein – each will play two roles in the performance.

The format of the play makes that possible, but Staker said it’s true that boys who might want to be in future performances should take note.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 and then at 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 14 and 15. Tickets cost $22 each.

According to the website, this is the 36th year of the Kaneland Music Department’s Renaissance Dinner.

John Reece, commander of the Elburn American Legion, said that there will be an official tree-lighting event as part of the Elburn Christmas Stroll, which takes place Dec. 6 at various locations in the village.

The ceremony will be at 7 p.m. at the American Legion building, located at 112 N. Main St. in downtown Elburn. We’ll have more information as the event draws near.

Education in Action Student-Led-Conferences The 8th Grade Red team students were selected to pilot Student-Led-Conferences at Kaneland Harter Middle School during the 2013-2014 school year. The purpose of a Student-Led-Conference is to bring ownership and reflection to a student’s academic progress. Students planned for these conferences, which they thought of as their “first business meeting.”

During the process, students learned essential skills of organization, time management, and planning by developing their portfolio and taking ownership of their hard work.

Ninety-four students were registered to attend the conferences on November 6 and November 7. Each of the core teachers were able to greet and converse with the students and their families during the time allotted.

Many parents and students found value in attending the conferences. Parents and students shared that they viewed the experience as a way to help students communicate with their parents, while at the same time learning how to run a meeting and practice clear organizational and communication skills.

Students presented material from each class that demonstrated their understanding of the content and completed a reflection on each item. Portfolio items included artifacts from each core class as well as college readiness data, such as EXPLORE Scores and ENGAGE results. Student Strength Profiles were completed by 8 Red teachers and were also included for each child. Students then used a script to successfully lead these conferences. We are very pleased that our students, teachers, and families were able to successfully pilot this great communication and learning experience!
