D-303 grad makes ‘The Voice’ Top 12

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles School District 303 grad on Wednesday night survived another round of cuts on NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition show.

Jeffery Austin, 24, received enough votes from the public to become one of the Top 12 finalists of the show.

Results were announced live in a Wednesday night broadcast.

Once Austin’s name was called, he held both his hands over his mouth.

“I had no idea that I would get this lucky to continue to work with @gwenstefani!”

Austin tweeted later during

the first half of the hourlong show. “Thank you everyone it means everything.”

Austin, who graduated from St. Charles North High School in 2009, performed singer Jesse Ware’s song “Say You Love Me” for his playoff round performance, which aired live Monday.

Public votes advanced two people from each of the show’s four coaches Then each coach selected another one other person from their specific team to advance to the Top 12.

The remaining members of No Doubt singer and Voice coach Gwen Stefani’s team are Austin, Korin Bukowski and Braiden Sunshine.

Austin will next compete in another live broadcast this month against the remaining 11 contestants. The two contestants with the lowest number of votes will be eliminated each week until a final winner is declared, according to the show’s website.

The public viewing audience can vote for their favorite contestant by downloading “The Voice” app onto their mobile phones, visiting NBC.com or purchasing a studio-recorded version of the contestant’s latest performance on iTunes.

Other area fire departments did not report any significant weather or storm-related calls as of 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The early-evening lightning strikes occurred separately from a line of storms that were approaching Kane County from the west at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Castro said.

The storms were expected to bring severe winds in scattered areas, Castro said.

Wind gusts could approach 50

miles an hour and in some areas reach 60 miles an hour, he said.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Kane County from 8:30 to 9:15 p.m.

Wednesday, and a wind advisory remains in place for the county and surrounding areas until 6 p.m. today.

St. Charles traffic enforcement campaign nets arrests, citations

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A recent traffic enforcement period in St. Charles netted three arrests, 17 citations and 10 warnings, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release issued Wednesday.

The three-day enforcement

period ended Nov. 1 and was held in connection with the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” safety campaigns.

It was done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The initiative – which is part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traf-

fic-related injuries and fatalities – included extra patrol assignments focusing on impaired drivers and seat belt violations, the release states.

Additionally, the release states, a roadside safety check was held Halloween night on North Second Street, which also is known as Route 31, a half-mile north of West Main Street in St. Charles.

According to the release, 29 crashes have occurred on Route 31 north of that location in the last year. Of those, one crash involved a fatality, and 12 involved injuries or tows.

During the enforcement period, St. Charles police made two driving under the influence arrests and one drug arrest, the release states.

Officers also issued the

following citations – one for a seat belt violation, two for suspended or revoked licenses, two for driving without insurance, seven for speeding and five for other violations, according to the release.

Statewide, 119 people were killed by drunken driving on Halloween nights between 2009 and 2013, the release states.

Recent research has led to the discovery of the exact point in the brain responsible for melding the visual images from each eye into a single “cyclopean” (derived from the Cyclops of Greek mythology) image. This combination of two streaming images makes it possible to catch a ball and perform other tasks that require that a person be able to pinpoint where objects are in space. However, some children have a condition known as “amblyopia” (commonly called “lazy eye”) that causes the brain to focus on one eye’s image more than the other, which compromises depth perception. While patching the healthy eye can effectively improve vision, discovery of the V2 layer of the extrastriate cortex may improve future treatment.

P.S. “Lazy eye” is an inaccurate way to refer to amblyopia because the problem is more a developmental one of the brain than an organic problem in the eye.

In a split vote, the County Board on Tuesday approved a construction contact with Martam Construction of Elgin for the project at Burlington Road and Route 47.

The intersection is in a “rural but well-traveled section” that once had stop signs only for Burlington Road, a county highway, according to the project website. Crashes in the 1990s prompted the state to add stop signs on Route 47, which

“significantly reduced” crashes but increased traffic delays, the website states.

“The increase in traffic on both roadways in recent years has led to significant backups and congestion at the intersection during rush hours,” according to the website. “This congestion, and the prospect of more as the county continues to grow, prompted the Kane County Division of Transportation to begin looking for ways to address the congestion issue before it becomes worse.”

According to the website, constructing a roundabout was among several options considered for the intersection.

Born: Aug. 24, 1942; in Aurora, IL Died: Nov. 9, 2015; in Geneva, IL Richard A. “Dick” Schlindwein, age 73, of Geneva, passed away Monday, November 9, 2015 at BRIA Rehabilitation Center in Geneva, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born August 24, 1942 in Aurora, the son of Harold and Vina Schlindwein.

Dick was a graduate of Aurora College and also attended DeVry College. He worked for 35 years at Riverbank Labs in Geneva, eventually owning the company during his last ten years. Dick liked working with his hands and especially enjoyed carving ducks. He and Marion were honorary members of Friends of Fabyan. He was considered a “Mr.-fix-it”, becoming a regular at Ace Hardware. Dick also loved to travel. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He

NORTH AURORA – A medical marijuana dispensary in North Aurora had a successful opening Tuesday, its manager said.

The PharmaCannis North Aurora dispensary opened at 9 a.m. Tuesday at 161 S. Lincolnway, Suite 301, North Aurora, with a line of people waiting outside, manager Clay Wynn said.

The dispensary served about 50 people Tuesday, including Trisha Seydel, the mother of PharmaCannis Co-Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer John Leja.

“She was the first patient; she was in at 9 o’clock,” Wynn said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the dispensary had 150 patients who had designated North Aurora as their preferred dispensary.

The number of patients who select the North Aurora dispensary can increase as more people with a qualifying medical condition sign up for a Medical Cannabis Registry Identification Card. Patients must have their card to purchase marijuana at the dispensaries.

The North Aurora dispensary currently has six strains of marijuana available, and Wynn said he hopes there are as many as 50 strains available by the end of the year.

The medical marijuana is currently being sold in oneeighth-ounce amounts of $45 each, tax included, Wynn said.

Prices are subject to change, he said.

The dispensary is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Tuesday and Sunday. The dispensary was open Tuesday because it was not yet ready for the public

St. Charles Noon Rotary named parade grand marshal

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Noon Rotary members will serve as the grand marshals for the 2015 Electric Christmas Parade, the Downtown St. Charles Partnership announced Tuesday in a press release.

In the release, Rotary President Hieu Nguyen stated the organization is excited to participate in the annual event.

“Our group does hope to spread our message of service,” Nguyen stated in the re-

lease. “We are always looking for new members and opportunities to help others.”

The parade is set for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 28 on Main Street in St. Charles.

It concludes the two-day Holiday Homecoming event, which begins Nov. 27 with the Lighting of the Lights ceremony at the First Street Plaza.

The release indicated that the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, which organizes Holiday Homecoming, looks forward to honoring the St. Charles Noon Rotary through the parade.

The club is celebrating 75 years of service.

In March, the partnership honored the St. Charles Kiwanis for its 100th anniversary by naming it grand marshal for the St. Patrick’s Parade.

Other Holiday Homecoming activities include a free showing of “Elf” at the Arcada Theatre, horse-drawn sleigh rides and Santa visit.

14 Kane County hearing set

on addiction center appeal

CAMPTON HILLS – The neighbors of a proposed alcohol and drug treatment center at a former boys school have filed an appeal against a petition for the property. Three years ago, they also opposed a similar petition at the same property.

Campton Hills residents Abram and Jolene Andrzejewski, who live immediately adjacent to the former Glenwood School for Boys at 41W400 Silver Glen Road, filed the appeal this week.

A hearing on the appeal is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 17 and Nov. 19 at Kane County Branch Court, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. The county canceled a ZBA hearing previously scheduled on the petition for the appeal.

Maxxam Partners LLC has filed a petition seeking a special-use permit to have a luxury private-pay alcohol and substance abuse treatment center at that location. The property is currently zoned for agriculture.

According to the appeal, the county should not advance the petition to a ZBA hearing without fulfilling some steps required by the county’s own zoning ordinance.

Their objection echoes a recent resolution from Campton Hills, which also claims that the county did not follow its own rules. Among other deficiencies, they both assert the

county is bypassing the steps of requiring its enforcement officer to approve Maxxam’s proposal and having approval of its staff before it advances to a ZBA hearing.

The enforcement officer – who is Mark VanKerkhoff, director of the Kane County Development and Community Services Department – said he would not comment on Campton Hills’ resolution nor the Andrzejewskis’ appeal.

In a text message, Andrzejewski wrote that while everyone agrees that addiction is a problem, “the question is whether we should be siting very large residential recovery businesses on [agriculture]-zoned parcels 22 minutes from hospitals, on an ad hoc basis, in areas with very thin public safety and emergency services, and whether it is right to be doing that without a rezoning of the property.”

According to the appeal and to Campton Hills’ resolution, one of the remedies would be to have the applicant seek a text amendment to the zoning code that would allow such a use.

Maxxam Partners LLC attorneys did not respond to messages seeking comment.

The Andrzejewskis’ attorney would not comment.

The previous petitioner, Kiva Recovery, tried to annex to Campton Hills and was denied in 2013. Kiva sued and won a $500,000 judgment earlier this year that was paid by the village’s insurance carrier.

BATAVIA – The city of Batavia wants to pursue a couple of new sources of revenue for its proposed 2016 budget.

Among the items being considered is a 1-cent gasoline tax increase and introducing a 2 percent liquor tax, according to the city’s online budget presentation.

Aldermen last week began discussing the $104.6 million budget, which has a $2.1 million deficit as proposed. The city could use funds from its $44.7 million in reserves, or a combination of reserves and different revenue generators to offset the deficit.

After another public discussion at 7 p.m. today at Batavia City Hall, 100 N. Island Ave., in Batavia, a public hearing on the budget will begin no earlier than 7:35 p.m.

Monday at city hall.

The Batavia City Council will not vote to formally adopt a 2016 budget until December.

Several aldermen, including Marty Callahan of the 6th Ward, were in favor of a liquor tax and the gas tax increase if it meant the city could avoid an increase in property taxes.

“There’s a lot of people out there just hurting right now,” Callahan said in a phone interview on Monday.

Sixth Ward Alderman Nick Cerone wanted the city to gather information on the percentages of various taxes of surrounding communities so he and the council could make an informed decision.

The aldermen also discussed scenarios wherein the property tax would be increased at a rate of 9 cents per $100 of equalized assessed value for the city’s general fund and also for stormwater projects.

City officials are concerned that if state lawmakers approve a property tax freeze, they will not have any flexibility if revenues come up short. On the other hand, if the new revenue sources are plentiful, the city would have the option to abate – or reduce – property taxes.

Cerone and Callahan said there were a handful of residents who attended last week’s budget discussion, and they encouraged more people to come to tonight’s discussion and the Monday public hearing.

“We are listening to them – there is no doubt,” Callahan said of the residents.

“We’re cognizant of the cost of living, and we want to do everything that we can to cut first and be as easy on the residents as possible,” Cerone added. “But we need to do what we need to do.”

‘Sisterly sacrifice’ Even if you’ve only read a few of my previous columns, you’ve probably picked up on this basic fact: Sports are not my thing.

Watching them, playing them, talking about them ... I’m not that interested in any of those activities, and not particularly good at any of them either. My claims to sports fame include one season of rec soccer in third grade and watching the last five minutes of the Cubs’ final victory against the Cardinals last month. You get the picture.

However, every fall and spring, I occasionally end up sitting in a lawn chair by an open field, watching a group of young girls play soccer. Why? My two youngest sisters are both on soccer teams, and – as their older sister – it’s my responsibility to support them in their passions.

This is all part of the concept that I’ve come to refer to as “sisterly sacrifice,” which I define as putting my sisters’ interests and desires over my own from time to time. Sisterly sacrifice can take many forms, from watching their soccer games to helping them with homework. As the oldest of four sisters, this concept has grown more and more important as the years go by.

Of course, my sisters have all had to participate in this act of selflessness, too. They’ve attended countless choir concerts, piano recitals and theatrical performances, often times at the cost of extra playtime or hanging out with friends. As a performer, I know first hand just how much a receptive audience can play a role in the success of a performance. And it honestly means the world to me whenever I look out at the seats and see my family applauding me.

That’s not to say my sisters are continually thrilled about having to watch all my various shows and concerts. These can admittedly get lengthy, and depending on what music or production is being performed, they’re not always exciting for a little kid.

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel For example, at my sixthgrade orchestra concert, my youngest sister stood up in the audience and started “conducting” the orchestra. Nevertheless, I give my sisters credit for their willingness to sit and watch all my performances throughout the years.

Similarly, I’m usually not completely excited to go watch a soccer game or attend an elementary school open house.

But the looks on my sisters’ faces when I provide encouragement for something important to them means the world to me and remind me of why sisterly sacrifice is essential.

For families to maintain healthy and beneficial relationships, it’s crucial that everyone feels loved and supported, whether they are brothers, sisters or parents. Selflessness nurtures the special bond between members of a family.

So, I’ll admit, spending my Saturday afternoons at soccer games is not my activity of choice, especially as someone who doesn’t have much of an interest in sports. But it’s so important that I give of my time to inspire my siblings, and I know that – in the long run – the post-game hugs and congratulations will end up meaning a lot to them both on and off the field. Obviously, there are a few areas where I could improve my sisterly sacrifice. Yet the effort is still there – and, after all, it’s the littlest things that end up making the biggest difference.

Trump seduces the press but not his party

By JONATHAN BERNSTEIN The Washington Post Yes, Donald Trump is good at grabbing media attention. But, no, this doesn’t mean that the political system has changed and that candidates from now on will simply say whatever pops into their minds, regardless of what their party thinks.

Most political scientists believe that Trump’s polling success – which began in June and peaked in early September – reflects his domination of the media.

When Republican voters were hearing plenty about Trump, and little about the other candidates, they told pollsters they would vote for him.

Trump is still receiving the most attention. But most voters aren’t paying close attention yet, and therefore are unfamiliar with the rest of the candidates.

Kevin Drum at Mother Jones argues that the real estate mogul’s manipulation of the press is inno-

vative. Trump and Ben Carson are willing to say things that more traditional candidates would regard as outrageous and politically suicidal, and journalists gobble up these statements.

Drum explains: “ ... apparently the political media has changed. Reporters and editors are now as eager as any gossip show to cover obvious buffoonery, and both Trump and Ben Carson have ridden that wave.”

I suspect that’s mostly wrong. The constraint in the past wasn’t that the media wouldn’t cover the off-kilter pronouncements of presidential candidates.

It was that the contenders themselves would not make these comments.

They wanted to please their parties, which would not nominate people who were not considered serious.

So, are the old constraints now gone? Can candidates say whatever they want and be rewarded for it? There are three possible answers: 1. The parties are

willing to nominate people they previously would have rejected.

2. Candidates can go around the parties and win a presidential nomination if their outlandish statements maximize press attention.

3. Carson and Trump are pursuing a losing strategy.

The first of these possibilities has not proved to be correct: Party actors have not rallied to Trump and Carson, despite their strong polling numbers.

It’s still possible, though extremely unlikely, that going around the parties will work. We’ve never seen anything quite like Trump in nomination politics before.

On the other hand, we have seen plenty of candidates with strong early poll showings but little party support fizzle once voters started paying attention.

Meanwhile, my money is on No. 3.

ALL IN THE FAMILY Smitty’s on the Corner in St. Charles ‘family owned and operated up and down’

Even the way the customers are welcomed – not only can they order any type of sandwich they want from the shop, but they also are served by employees who strive to make them feel at home upon walking through the door.

In fact, that sense of family also should be taken in a literal sense.

The shop, located at 15 E. Main St. in St. Charles, is owned by Steve “Smitty” and Ann Smith, whose children Anneka and Cole also work at the shop around their school schedules. The shop is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

“We’re family owned and operated up and down,” Ann Smith said. “Our children have grown up with this business, and in February we will have been in business for 16 years. Everyone kind of has that family feel when walking in.

We’ve seen the community grow up with our children, so we have that sort of bond between us and the community.”

Smitty’s on the Corner opened after Steve and Ann Smith were searching for a business opportunity while living in Arizona. At the time, the couple had family members living near the St. Charles area.

Once contacted by family about the availability at 15 E. Main St. in St. Charles and then locking down the lease, Steve and Ann Smith sold their house in Arizona and headed for St. Charles.

The relationships built since their arrival could not be better, Ann Smith said, noting that one thing that the business has focused on since Day 1 is that “lost idea of top priority customer service” that is rarely seen with bigger branches or

companies.

The couple has wanted to keep it simple from the beginning – coming in without either one having any restaurant experience, but both having come from working in customer service.

“We have people come in that don’t even have to order,” Ann Smith said. “We have one man that comes in and doesn’t even say a word. One time I asked him, ‘Do you want what you usually get?’ And he responded, ‘If I wanted something else, I’d go somewhere else.’ So, I think building relationships and bonds like that, especially with the longevity of being here so long, has really helped this business become what it is today.”

Ann Smith said another thing that sets the shop apart is the “ability to order exactly what you want.” The couple felt upon starting the business that most people settle for whatever is on the menu at certain places, but both wanted to emphasize that whatever the customer wants, the customer gets at Smitty’s on the Corner.

Another way the business has been able to connect with the community is through delivery. Although the primary delivery hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., both Steve and Ann Smith often are at the shop throughout the day and sometimes hand deliver the sandwiches themselves.

The top-selling sandwich at Smitty’s looks to be the Turkey Berry, which comes with turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce, red onion and a mayonnaise-cranberry sauce on fresh cracked wheat bread. Ann Smith said it nearly “outsells every product 2-to-1.”

In addition, all four members of the

family have items on the menu named after them.

There is the Smitty’s Special (turkey, honey ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and honey mustard on fresh-baked sourdough bread); Ann’s Favorite (turkey, havarti cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on a croissant); the Coley O’Smith (lean corned beef, Swiss cheese, cole slaw, tomato and Russian dressing on fresh rye bread); and – on the grill – the Anneka (turkey, honey ham, Swiss cheese, tomato and Grey Poupon on fresh cracked wheat bread).

Soups, salads, snacks and ice cream also are offered on the menu.

The Smith family ensures its customers not only quality service, but also quality products. Smitty’s on the Corner could be viewed as a mom-and-pop shop, as Ann Smith said with a laugh, but calling it that would leave out the children – and the business is just as much a part of their lives as the parents.’

‘BETTER AT WHAT I DO BEST’ North’s Amro didn’t let his size keep him from success

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – At first glance, Alex Amro doesn’t seem as though he’d be too much trouble to contain on a soccer field.

His small stature – 5-foot6, 140 pounds – is something he’s dealt with his entire life, but it hasn’t hampered the St. Charles North senior midfielder from being successful in the sport he loves.

After having a successful season, one in which he tallied 14 goals while contributing 16 assists, Amro is the 2015 Kane County Chronicle Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

But Amro will be the first to tell you he wouldn’t be in the position he is – posing for a POY photoshoot Wednesday or being a part of an Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship team – without his teammates.

“This season wasn’t about me; it was about this team and what we were able to accomplish,” Amro said. “I don’t think it’s stressed enough how much more important team success is compared to individual success. You always hear people say, ‘Well, this guy had a good season,’ but, like, no.

This team had a good season, you know. This was a very special team, and I think it’s necessary to give them credit for everything that they’ve done, especially for me.”

Athough Amro never has let his size, or lack thereof, affect the way he plays the game, there definitely was an adjustment period of getting used to what would make him successful. Amro found his niche after not playing high school soccer his sophomore year after playing with his Chicago-based club team, Sockers FC, yearround.

But he’s come to realize his height is something he can’t control, so why not make the best of it?

“I realized that it’s not all about size, you know,” Amro said. “For me, it’s mostly about how quick you think or your mental ability making up for that physical ability.

Whenever I had been put in games these past few years, against guys that were bigger or stronger, I knew I had to play quicker than them, think quicker and be one step ahead of them throughout the game.

Just because I’m small doesn’t mean I can’t be aggressive.

“Being technical on the ball, along with my speed of

play, I’d like to think those two are my strengths on the field.

So, what I told myself is why not be better at what I do best.

I said, I’m going to be the best at those things and go beyond what other players were doing in those areas.”

North coach Eric Willson saw that ability in Amro since his freshman year. But comparing that “tiny kid with tons of technical ability” to the player he has coached over the past two seasons, there has been a monumental change.

Willson, who coached the North Stars (15-4-3, 5-1 UEC River) to the school’s first UEC River title in boys soccer since 2006, said after the 2014 season

ended, he had that team’s senior captains, including Nick Graham, approach him and make sure Amro became the leader of the 2015 squad.

“They told me, ‘If you’re looking for someone to be a captain, he’s your guy,’ ” Willson said. “I think he really encompasses everything you want in a leader and a soccer player. He tries his best to get everyone involved and made a lot of players better because of that. So I knew heading into this season that he was going to be one of the guys to wear that armband, and I think he did it very proud.”

Amro knows there are opportunities to play in college

and he “definitely has the aspiration” and “has the expectation to be in uniform” at the next level next year, although nothing has been finalized.

But Willson, along with many of the teammates who Amro has had over the years, know that whatever path Amro chooses for his soccer career, it will be one in which he makes an impact.

“Where he falls is undecided right now, but I will tell you this,” Willson said, “whetever school gets Alex Amro next season is going to be a very lucky school. I’m looking forward to seeing his soccer career continue to grow from here.”

He has split 22 goals in each of his first two seasons for the Rockets, the most recent of which led BC to a Class 2A regional title.

Matt Waldoch, Geneva, jr., F The 6-foot forward caused problems for teams on a consistent basis. His nine goals led the Vikings, while he also added a couple of assists on the season. Waldoch was the primary scoring option for a Geneva team that lost in the 3A regional semifinals.

Mitch Dorsey, St. Charles East, sr., F There may not have been someone with more speed on the ball than Dorsey this season. He was able to adapt to providing a boost off the bench at times during the season, but his 10 goals were among the team best, and was a big reason the Saints won a 3A regional.

Angel Escontrias, Kaneland, jr., F Despite missing the first five games with an injury, Escontrias still managed to lead the Knights in scoring with 12 goals and five assists. He was the

mainstay of the Kaneland offensive attack once fully healed from injury.

Escontrias also earned NI Big 12 All-Conference and all-sectional honors.

Alex Amro, St. Charles North, sr., M The Kane County Chronicle Player of the Year had 14 goals and added 16 assists for the Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion North Stars. He appeared undersized, but used his speed and technical ability to be a nightmare in the middle of the field for opponents.

Evan DiLeonardi, St. Charles East, sr., M DiLeonardi was as big a part of East’s success as anyone. The Saints’ senior captain didn’t need to put the ball in the net to make an impact, although he did score five goals, but he did many things that didn’t show up on the scoreboard to help his team win.

Ryan Olson, St. Charles North, jr., M Olson took off at the beginning of the season, scoring goals at a phenomenal pace. He came back to Earth after the start, but still managed to lead North with 16 goals. He also added eight assists. Olson had two hat tricks in that early season tear.

Nathan Carey, Batavia, sr., D Carey was the leader of a Batavia back line that allowed less than two goals a game this season.

Coach Mark Gianfrancesco said Carey was a big part of the Bulldogs’ successful season that ended in the 3A sectional semifinals in penalty kicks. Carey also added three goals and four assists.

Brandon Stricker, St. Charles North, sr., D Stricker was a captain and one of the anchors of a back line that coach Eric Willson said was one of the best in the state. The physically strong defender also chipped in two goals and an assist on the season.

AJ Gouriotis, Burlington Central, sr., D Gouriotis was as strong of a defender around the Chronicle area as any. The Rockets’ 11-win season was a success largely because of Gouriotis and the back line, which nearly helped BC beat Fenton in the sectional semifinals.

Jonathan Burke, St. Francis, sr., GK The unquestioned leader of the Spartans had 15 shutouts, making 96 saves this season. He allowed seven goals in 22 matches while leading the Spartans to 2A regional

and sectional championships. Burke also was named Chicago Catholic League All-Conference.

St. Francis Spartans earn respect under Ward

Kevin Ward has always had passion for coaching soccer. Through his 26 years on the sidelines, no opportunity has seemed greater than the chance he got to become St. Francis boys soccer coach in 2014.

Through the first his two seasons, Ward has taken the program and helped put it back on the map. After leading the Spartans to a 16-2-4 record this season, one that included a trip to a Class 2A supersectional, Ward is the 2015 Kane County Chronicle Boys Soccer

Coach of the Year.

In his two years at St. Francis, Ward has accumulated a record of 25-11-8, winning the school’s first Class 2A regional and sectional titles since the 2011 season, one that also ended in a supersectional loss. Before his arrival, the Spartans struggled to a 6-10-2 finish in 2013.

But the Spartans’ most recent season goes far beyond the wins and losses, hinging on numerous accomplishments during the year.

Including the season-ending loss to Peoria Notre Dame, a 1-0 defeat in penalty kicks, the Spartans allowed only sev-

en goals in 22 games. The loss to Peoria Notre Dame also ended a streak of 17 games without a defeat.

“We took everything serious once he became coach here,” threeyear varsity starting goalKevin Ward keeper Jonathan Burke said. “He’s done such a great job with this program from the moment he got here. He had an idea just how to get the best out of us, diagramming a game plan that would work with the group we had, and it clearly

worked.”

There definitely seemed to be a defense-first approach with Ward this season, and he admitted that it’s still “a work in progress,” and the offense isn’t exactly where he’d like it to be. But he knows one goal he had wanted since getting the position certainly has been achieved since his arrival.

The current director of coaching for Geneva-based Strikers Fox Valley wanted to be taken seriously.

“We wanted to be respected, bottom line,” Ward said.

“St. Francis wasn’t respected.

They were the team that was an easy win, or you put in a

tournament to have a break game. Over the last two years, we certainly feel like St. Francis boys soccer is back on the map and relevant again. It helps that the players we have bought into the system in place and ran with it.”

St. Francis was unbeaten in nine matches against Class 3A opponents this season.

Although the Spartans graduate the likes of Burke, among other leaders, the system and mentality Ward has built at St. Francis is one that demands success. Ward knows the 2015 season can help the program develop momentum for years to come.

RHF no longer hosting LPGA event

SUGAR GROVE – The LPGA and Rich Harvest Farms have turned out the lights on the Sugar Grove golf course as host site of the 2016 UL International Crown, an eight-nation match play tournament.

In a news release Wednesday, the LPGA Tour said it and RHF have “mutually agreed” to relocate the tournament. The LPGA is committed to keeping the International Crown in the Chicago region for the competition from July 21 through 24, 2016. The event was initially set to be contested in Sugar Grove during the first week of August 2016, but the schedule later was amended.

The LPGA provided no reason for the decision. Rich Harvest Farms owner and founder Jerry Rich could not immediately be reached. LPGA spokesman Kraig Kann declined further comment.

Rich was instrumental in conceptualizing and co-organizing the biennial event, which debuted outside Baltimore in 2014 and is set for South Korean soil in 2018. After RHF hosted the 2009 Solheim Cup, a biennial match play tournament pitting the United States against Europe, he aspired to bring an event that showed the true global reach of women’s golf.

Cadets fete wrestling quintet AURORA – Wednesday’s first day of the NCAA signing period doubled as a “cheat day” for five Marmion wrestlers.

It had nothing to do with the John Hancocks on their respective National Letters of Intent.

Gathered in front of their peers during a lunch hour ceremony, seniors Michael Callahan (Duke), Trace Carello (Air Force), Riley DeMoss (Princeton), AJ Jaffe (Harvard) and Nathan Traxler (Stanford) learned of an additional treat. Cadets coach Donny Reynolds gave them a free pass to dine on fare during a post-ceremony reception that included quesadillas and meatballs along with fruit, vegetable and cheese trays.

“We’ve been on diets for a couple weeks now leading up to the season,” Jaffe said, “so when he said you guys could have a little cheat day, it was nice.”

DeMoss (170 pounds) and Traxler (182) earned Class 3A state titles last season, continuing what Marmion head of school and principal Anthony Tinerella called a “big crescendo” for the program that has become a state tournament staple in a decade-plus.

Callahan, DeMoss, Jaffe and Traxler each are products of “The Barn” at Campton Hillsbased SCN Youth Wrestling.

“To be able to do this and all go to prestigious schools as we are, words really don’t describe it,” Jaffe said. “That’s how we’re feeling right now.”

Wednesday opened the NCAA signing period for athletes who will attend NCAA Division I or II schools and compete in sports other than football, soccer and water polo, whose signing periods are in February.

GENEVA – Geneva boys basketball center Loudon Vollbrecht confirmed Wednesday that he will miss his senior season after an MRI revealed a torn ACL in his left knee.

Vollbrecht suffered the injury on the last play of Geneva’s football season, a lateral play in Friday’s Class 7A second-round loss at Bradley-Bourbonnais that saw the offensive lineman carry the ball after a Vikings’ reception.

The 6-foot-8, 295-pound Vollbrecht averaged 10.8 points and 6.6 rebounds a game during the 2014-15 basketball season for a Vikings team that took fourth place at the Class 4A state tournament in Peoria.

Graduation losses don’t faze Trojans

By ALEX KANTECKI akantecki@shawmedia.com Over the summer, CaryGrove football coach Brad Seaburg went door-to-door to meet with senior players and their families, laying out the plan for the upcoming season, from the fine details of camp to the expectations of the team in the weight room and in the classroom.

After losing 16 starters – and 24 players overall – to graduation from the Class 7A state runner-up Brad team, questions Seaburg of how the Trojans could possibly recover from such a big hit came up naturally.

“After about three houses, I was very direct with the parents and the kids,” Seaburg recalled. “I said, ‘That type of an attitude is unacceptable.’ Not only did we lose a lot of guys, we lost some of the best players at any position that we’ve ever had … the list goes on and on.”

That list includes two of the best linemen to ever play in McHenry County: Notre Dame’s Trevor Ruhland and Winona State’s Michael Gomez. Also gone were quarterback and basketball standout Jason Gregoire (Illinois Wesleyan), offensive lineman Scott Topole (Northern Illinois), Larkin Hanselmann and Matt Sutherland.

But Seaburg didn’t want to hear it.

“The natural inclination is to think there’s going to be a drop-off, and we fought very hard against that,” Seaburg said.

He was right to put up a fight. Since a 29-8 loss to Huntley on Sept. 25, C-G has won six straight (counting a forfeit to McHenry), beating Belleville West and Benet Academy by a combined score of 83-24 in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

The No.5-seeded Trojans play at No. 4 Batavia in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Seaburg lauds the commitment of the entire team, but specifically points to Tyler Pennington and Erik Norberg.

Since losing to Huntley, neither has come Erik Norberg off the field on offense or defense.

Pennington, a junior, has 1,255 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. In Saturday’s 35-17 win over Benet, he had three touchdowns, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three sacks. Norberg, meanwhile, helped pave the way for 332 rushing yards on offense and knocked down two passes on defense.

Alex Prendergast, along with Pennington, is the only returning starter on defense, while Norberg, Jimmy Freskos, Kevin Hughes and Owen Henriques are the returning starters on offense.

The Trojans (10-1) have made it to the quarterfinals in six out of the past eight years, winning at least one playoff game every year since 2004.

Their 2014 postseason path included a home quarterfinal win against Geneva.

This postseason, C-G has jumped out to early leads against Belleville West and Benet. That’s something the Trojans would like to do against Batavia (10-1), but it’s not an expectation.

Senior from Batavia eyes title

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com St. Francis senior Olivia Sauls totes the position title of defensive specialist despite her mastery of the primary offensive maneuver in girls volleyball.

Here is the Batavia resident talking about her stand serve; coaches have instructed her not to jump during delivery considering Sauls’ 5-foot-3 stature and the leverage she gets from the ground.

“You hit it out with your palm and you hit it hard, and then it just goes fast and floats,” Sauls said.

Twenty-five times this season, that strategy has produced an ace for Sauls and the Spartans. A few more at this weekend’s Class 4A state tournament at Redbird Arena in Normal could go a long way toward adding another title to St. Francis’ haul.

St. Francis (37-3) rolled to a 3A state championship threepeat before being bumped up in class this season.

Friday’s semifinal opponent, Cary-Grove, boasts only three state appearances in school history. The 11-time champion Spartans, led by iconic, 40th-year coach Peg Kopec, have made 19 previous trips downstate before this week.

Sauls requires no refresher course on Spartans history.

A product of St. Michael’s in Wheaton, she says, “I think I’ve known ever since first grade that I was going to end up at St. Francis.”

Her father, Michael, and brother, Thomas, both are St. Francis alumni, and even made an imprint on Sauls’ selection of her No. 7 jersey years ago. With 14, the number her father and brother wore in football, unavailable, Sauls reasoned she would make like an especially aerodynamic serve and cut things in half.

“Now that it’s coming toward the end of my volleyball career, I’m trying to get it to slow down,” she said. “This past week has gone by a lit-

Waiting, among other things, doesn’t faze Sauls. In a way, the Spartans’ 8:30 p.m. start time Friday simply reflects the poise and patience she’s shown during the stretch run.

A libero as a freshman in the program’s lower levels, she shifted to defensive specialist as a sophomore and also was a DS last season, her first with the varsity.

Such switches are common, and carry with them a few outward changes. To start, a DS does not don the different-colored jersey of a libero.

A DS also is in the lineup for three rotations, not all six, as the back row-roaming libero is eligible.

Sauls’ 83 digs rank fifth among 11 Spartans to record a statistic in that category, but she has had fewer chances to build on her total in the past three weeks. The Spartans recently began substituting classmate Grace Moran for Sauls after Sauls serves, but don’t think for a moment the

senior is statuesque during her time on the court.

Glancing at assistant Lisa Ston’s clandestine zone calls from the bench, Sauls takes her cue, focuses and lets fly.

“I feel that I’m really good at hitting my zones and being effective,” Sauls said. “I just try to stay confident and aggressive.”

Sauls plays club ball for Batavia-based Fusion South and remains close with several Batavia High School players and Fusion teammates from other schools.

“I love it, because it’s a lot of fun and the training is really intense and there’s a lot of good coaches,” Sauls said.

“They really help with discipline and training, and I’m able to meet a lot of people and make a lot of new friends.”

Doesn’t sound too shabby, does it? And the Mediterranean diet doesn’t have any adverse side effects. But it does cost a little more than junk food.

If you’re a regular reader of this column, you’ll know that observational studies like those I just summarized are not as strong evidence as randomized trials. That’s true, but there also are a number of large randomized trials that point in the same direction as the observational studies.

For example, a recently published study of more than 7,000 men and women called PREDIMED found that people eating a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts reduced their risk of diabetes by 40 percent.

Now, if doctors had invented a pill that reduced your risk of so many major diseases, you’d want that pill. And you’d probably be willing to pay a lot for it, too.

But there already is a way for you to protect yourself against the diseases that we all want to avoid. And you don’t have to do anything beyond what you already do, anyway: eat.

Maybe I’ve come on a little strong today. But I think there’s a lot of misguided skepticism about what science has shown is a healthy lifestyle.

And I want skeptics like you to know that I think your skepticism puts you at risk.

fessionals feel that suppressing your anger may be more harmful than expressing it because you risk developing such stress-related problems as headaches, rashes, indigestion and insomnia.

Psychologist Zelda Segal states that although anger is one of the basic human emotions, many teens find it so unpleasant that they feel they must keep it inside them.

Psychiatrist Theodore Rubin, author of “The Angry Book,” agrees with Dr. Segal: “People who are holding their anger inside tend to act sullen, and that leads to a breakdown in communication.”

Dr. Segal, who has worked with young people in schools, suggests that angry feelings should not be hidden. She says that learning to deal effectively with anger can improve not only the quality of your relationships, but also your physical and mental well-being.

Repressed anger, says Dr. Segal,

She slowly became aware that she had been using her mother as a convenient target for the anger she was feeling toward her best friend, who had been making a strong play for the guy they both liked. Both felt a sense of relief and the teen’s home life improved.

Although there is nothing to be gained by denying our natural and honest feelings, expressing anger is not always easy. The following guidelines should help you handle your anger more effectively, strengthen your relationships and protect your well-being: • Don’t be fearful that your anger will drive others away.

Friendships cannot endure if each party tiptoes around the other, afraid to be honest.

• When expressing anger, seek to improve a situation, not to gain revenge. Venting angry feelings is healthy, but name-call-

ing or insults will only aggravate the problem.

• If you can’t approach the person who has upset you, you can use other means of release: talking with a friend, taking a long walk, playing a sport or even having a good cry in private. Crying is a natural response to feeling hurt. It can provide a much-needed release for frustrations and help defuse the angry feelings that can destroy a relationship.

• Don’t panic if, at times, your feelings seem stronger than the situation warrants. A particular incident may rub a hidden sore spot or it might be the last straw after an aggravating day. When that happens, simply follow up with an honest acknowledgment to the person involved and go on from there.

• Seek help if you need it. If your pent-up anger is interfering with your daily life, it is time to consult with someone whose advice you trust. You can begin with a parent, a school counselor, your family doctor or a close confidant, and, if need be, a therapist. Talking things over with an objective listener can often clear the way for constructive action. At the very least, it provides relief.

Dear Dr. K: In some of your columns you’ve said that the “Mediterranean diet” is healthy.

First, what is a Mediterranean diet? Second, what proof is there that it really is healthy? Call me “Skeptical.”

Dear Reader: Well, “Skeptical,” prepare yourself for a fairly emphatic reply. Because when I think skepticism about something important is misguided, I tend to unload.

The Mediterranean diet is the traditional diet of people in countries near the Mediterranean Sea. The diet is rich in plant foods.

These include fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts and seeds.

Animal protein is consumed chiefly in the forms of fish and poultry.

Olive oil is the principal fat. And wine is taken with meals.

Now let’s turn to your skepticism. The only time you’ll hear in this column that a particular type of lifestyle is healthy is when there is scientific evidence behind it – lots of it.

How do we know the Mediterranean diet is healthy? From hundreds of scientific studies involving hundreds of thousands of people whose health was followed for decades. Most of these studies were “observational”: They carefully evaluated people’s diets on a regular basis and measured their health. In fact, there are so many of these studies, involving so many people, from so many different parts of the world, that it’s hard to summarize them briefly.

But here’s my summary: People who eat a Mediterranean diet have a substantially lower risk of getting diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer.

I never thought about that. When you hear someone speaking with an unexpected accent, it does immediately conjure some picture in one’s mind.

Today, though, whatever your accent, the key word is “entry.” South is in four hearts. West leads the spade ace: six, two, eight. West then shifts to the club jack. How should declarer proceed from there?

North’s negative double promised four hearts (or five or six in a hand too weak for a two-heart response). I agree with East’s not raising spades.

He has no spade honor, a very weak hand and the awful 4-3-3-3 distribution.

South is threatened with four losers: two spades, one diamond and one club. But he has 10 possible tricks: three hearts, three diamonds, two clubs, a long trump and a ruff in either hand.

The original declarer immediately drew trumps, then led his diamond jack, under which West signaled with the nine, which indicated an even number and denied the 10. So East took this trick and returned the spade seven.

West won and played a third spade, which had to be ruffed in the dummy.

Since the diamonds were blocked, the contract was unmakable.

South should have drawn at most two rounds of trumps before attacking diamonds.

Then he would have had a trump entry left in the dummy and would have received a sitting ovation from his partner!

Koncius: What are some ways to bring fall into your home?

Ross: Look at mums in a new way. I have seen so many different varieties and colors this year. Don’t look at the typical fall orange, brown or yellow colors. Look at fall as purple or bright green or even fuchsia. Meanwhile, put something fallish both at

Ross and Kochar have an apartment in East Harlem and are looking to buy a place in Connecticut; they recently sold Pine Hill Farm, the cozy and colorful country home that appears in many photos in the book. And although they have things in storage even after a huge tag sale, they are ready to start collecting more stuff for the next round.

I spoke to Ross recently and asked him to dish on fall entertaining and living with lots of stuff.

Linen napkins are a must, even if they’re from World Market. There are lots of great vintage linens out there, too. Throw napkins in the washer and dryer; they don’t always need to be pressed to perfection. Tie them in a knot and throw them on a plate and no one will know they aren’t perfectly ironed. Find a cool soup tureen; this is a multipurpose item that can hold a stew or a flower arrangement. Buy a cake pedestal; they add height and can be used for lots of things such as hors d’oeuvres, desserts and baked brie.

Koncius: How should you stock a bar cart?

Ross: You need a great pitcher or a jug, an ice bucket, stirring spoon, cocktail shaker and glasses to serve drinks on the rocks. I have seen lots of people put wine bottles and wine glasses on a bar cart, but you don’t want your wine sitting out. A bar

cart is to serve cocktails.

Koncius: How do you inject personality into your home?

Ross: This is one of the hardest things when it comes to decorating. Today, lots of trendy inexpensive big-box stores sell a lot of inexpensive accessories that you might think would add personal style. But five of your friends might walk in and buy the same stuff. Thrifting, flea market and vintage shopping can add much more personal looks with the things you uncover.

Koncius: Can’t you find old things by shopping a relative’s closets?

Ross: I was able to inherit things from my grandparents, like the silverware they got for their wedding. I don’t come from a wealthy family. But every family has treasures. When you start talking to the older generation about things that you love, their faces may light up. I was talking to my aunt about some things, and she said, “I have something like that in my attic that I would be thrilled to give to

you.” It’s so nice when you have them over and use their things. I remember my grandparents, when I used their Daffodil pattern silverplated flatware, they loved the fact that it was being used and loved and more family memories were being created.

Koncius: What is a modern mix?

Ross: For me, it’s captivating combinations of new and old, simple and elaborate, rough and refined. I like pattern on pattern and layers of color. Today, people aren’t living with everything just old or everything just new.

It’s about educating your eye.

Koncius: So what would Marie Kondo of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” have to say about your love of stuff?

Ross: There is a reason for everything that is at my house. I am very organized on my shelving and in my drawers. Being orderly is key if you have a lot of things. I know where each and every piece is. Just call me a hoarder of beautiful things.

Moving from a 2,300-squarefoot house to a one-bedroom rental required Shannon Claire Smith and Nicholas Herman to rethink everything.

Here are some tricks they used to think outside the “rental box” and make the most of their smaller living space.

• Create zones: Breaking up a long space into smaller, separate areas makes your home seem bigger. Use furniture or rugs to define “rooms.” Carve out a designated entry area for keys and mail, a comfortable spot for seating and a functional work space.

• Bring the focus up: Hang artwork and curtains tall and wide. Put curtain rods just below the ceiling. Install floorto-ceiling shelves to maximize

storage without taking up floor space. Stretching the surface area of the walls creates the illusion of height and space.

• Paint, if you’re allowed: Painting an accent wall or hallway creates depth and dimension. Don’t be afraid of bold or dark colors; they give the illusion of depth.

• Light it up: Avoid using overhead fluorescent lighting at all costs. Place lamps and mirrors strategically throughout your space to create mood lighting and bounce natural light around the room. Replace boring light fixtures with vintage finds.

• Update your bathroom: Replace dated faucets and install a rain shower head; stash the originals to swap back when you move out. Consider building a screened radiator cover to hide the bulky unit as well as provide another surface.
