Kaneland fall play features 2 casts KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School freshman Grayson Bilskey is ready for his first theatrical performance at the high school, but the presentation of “The Butler Did It” won’t be his first experience on the stage.

Bilskey said he started performing at age 9, and he went on to take part in a half-dozen shows while he was a student at Kaneland Harter Middle School. But there is something fresh and new about his role in “The Butler Did It” – it is his first time as an understudy.

Four shows are set for this weekend, starting at 7 p.m. Friday. Other shows are set for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The 2 p.m. Saturday show is designated as an understudy performance. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults and are available online at khs.kaneland.org or at the door at the time of the performances.

ditorium at Kaneland High School, at 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

Bilskey said he never before had participated in a show with an understudy performance. He said the concept was “interesting to me.” And, he said, there are benefits. He plays Father White, and he said it is good he is able to consult with the actor playing the role with the “lead” cast.

“We have spent some time talking about how we should perform certain things,” Bilskey said.

Christina Staker, the play’s director, said it was the first time Kaneland has worked with understudies at such a performance. She said there were a few reasons, including “some close calls” in the past with students getting sick before shows.

She said she thought “that it would be a smart idea to have someone else prepared to perform should we ever have an emergency.”

Also, she said there had been attendance issues at rehearsals in past years, and she was able to establish a policy in which the understudy would take the lead’s

Those in the play said audience members would find “The Butler Did It” to be an enjoyable satire. Kaneland senior Taylor Tindall plays the role of Haversham in the lead cast. Tindall called the play “a really good mix of funny and serious … it’s kind of poking fun at other murder mysteries.”

Bilskey said those who come “are going to be able to see a play that is very deep and serious, but at the same time will have some laughs out of it. ... You will get to see a cast of people perform who are very unified and working together very well.”

Tindall and Bilskey both said they are enjoying the experience and would encourage others to try out for future plays.

Elburn firefighters plan food drive at Jewel

WHAT: Representatives from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District will kick off an annual food drive. Firefighters will be at Jewel to collect donated items that shoppers can select, and the items will be taken to the Elburn Food Pantry. Jewel will have items that are needed at the pantry, including macaroni and cheese, pasta, cereal, toiletries, bar soap and dish soap.

GENEVA – The military veterans stood up to a thunderous standing ovation Tuesday in a packed gym during Geneva Middle School North’s 18th annual Veterans Day ceremony.

The orchestra played “My Country ’Tis of Thee,” the choir sang “God Bless America,” and veterans stood to receive certificates of appreciation from the students. A ceremony also was held at Geneva Middle School South.

Several students delivered short speeches about the veterans in their lives. Among them was Matthew Dutton, who spoke about his father, Scott, a naval staff sergeant who served in Desert Storm, where he earned the combat action ribbon.

“This military man’s favorite food was Pop Tarts,” Matthew Dutton said.

Every care package the family sent to him was full of them, he said.

“He spent eight years in the Navy,” Dutton said. “I can’t say how proud I am of him. Dad, I really appreciate your service and bravery.

You will always be a role model.”

Keynote speaker Van Stone, a Geneva resident and a decorated Vietnam combat veteran, referenced Thomas Paine, saying, “These are the times that try men’s souls.

A ‘GAME CHANGER’ New Sugar Grove library director: ‘We are going to let people know what we are accomplishing’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Even as a new director with new ideas at the Sugar Grove Public Library, Shannon Halikias said the long-term plan is to try again for another rate increase.

Halikias said the district likely would not put forth a new request until the 2016 presidential election. In the meantime, Halikias, 44, said she will focus on telling the public what the library can do and its place in the life of the community, as opposed to what it does not do.

“As a dedicated mother of two boys, age 9 and 10, I am really in touch with what parents are looking for in a library,” Halikias said. “The library is a resource and a place to come. It is the ‘third space’ beyond home and beyond work. It’s one of the extra places you want to go in your life. ... People are looking for themselves in the library.”

Halikias started her new job Oct. 20 at a salary of $57,000. The previous library director, Carol Dolin, left after two years to take a position at the Zion-Benton Public Library.

Halikias said she considers herself a “game changer.”

“What I bring to the table is a strong reputation of advocacy,” Halikias said. “I want to change the dialogue from what we don’t have, but what we do. ... I will be out in the community doing outreach. I will bring those skills to the position I have now and that will – hopefully – make the difference.”

In 2004, voters approved an $8 million bond issue to build a new library, but not a rate increase to provide the funds to run it. The 32,000-square-foot library has the operating budget of its former 6,600-square-foot building, officials said.

But with the Sugar Grove

area poised for growth after the recession, a strong library is one of those civic services people look for when they consider a community – along with schools, police and fire protection, Halikias said.

“We have a new building here, technology area and study rooms, a garden room with pretty wicker furniture, Wi-Fi,” Halikias said.

“I just had blueberry coffee at the coffee shop. If we get people to use the facility more, they will realize what we have here. That is part of the changing of the dialogue: We’re not talking about what we are lacking, but what we are providing.”

Library Board President

Anthony Oliver said the library is confronted daily with its finances.

“We can’t keep staff and buy books without a little bit more money coming in,” Oliver said. “The referendum is a couple years off, and it’s a lot of work. We hope it being the presidential election that more people will come out.

And it will be more time for the community to know our new director and what she brings.”

Oliver said the library is trying to provide programs and resources and show the public how much more it can be.

Members divided over abatement amount

vor of an estimated aggregate levy of $141,798,092 at its regular monthly meeting. Board members Jim Gaffney and Ed McNally voted no on the motion, and board member Judith McConnell was absent.

When debt service and other factors are included, the estimated total levy results in a estimated average tax increase of 3.18 percent, according to the district’s summary of the resolution. The board wants to abate – or reduce – the debt service so the overall increase for taxpayers will be limited to an average 1.5 percent increase or less.

“There was a commitment to abate, but not a commitment on how much to abate,”

District Superintendent Don Schlomann said Tuesday.

District officials Monday presented the school board with the potential impact of a 1.5 percent increase versus a 1 percent increase. Using teaching positions as an example, a levy increase of 1.5 percent might result in the district reducing its budget by 29 fulltime equivalency positions, said Seth Chapman, the district’s assistant superintendent of business services.

The smaller levy increase of 1 percent might result in about 42 full-time positions being cut. Any future cuts do not necessarily have to be

teaching positions – it could come from capital projects or other areas, McNally said.

McNally, who teaches at Proviso West High School, said he understands the impact losing teachers could have for the district. He also said he represents the St. Charles residents who have asked for tax relief.

“I’m in favor of the lowest possible increase that we can come up with,” McNally said.

Both McNally and board member Corinne Pierog spoke about striking the right balance between taxpayer wishes and providing a quality education at the district’s

schools.

Pierog, Board Secretary Nick Manheim and Board Vice President Kathy Hewell on Tuesday voted in favor of a 1.5 percent levy increase.

McNally, Gaffney and Board President Steve Spurling voted no on the 1.5 increase and instead voted in favor of the 1 percent increase.

Since both votes were split 3-3, the district will collect and share more information about the impact of the different levy increases, Schlomann said.

The school board is expected to adopt the 2014 tax levy at its Dec. 8 meeting.

Students were invited to vote for the teacher they Brian Wright felt was most worthy of the honor, based on criteria, such as knowledge of subject matter, ability to get students to think critically and if the teacher contributes to the school beyond the course of the school day, according to a news release.

DiTella has been a teacher at St. Charles North since 2001. She also is involved in the school’s history-related extra-curricular programs by co-advising the Model United Nations Club and the Social Studies National Honor Society.

DiTella is married to Mike DiTella, a social studies teacher at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, and is the mother of two children.

Wright, raised in St. Charles, is in his third year of teaching at St. Charles East.

During the school year, he is active coaching junior varsity girls bowling and helping with the Science Olympiad.

Wright spends his summers as a nature instructor for camps at Hickory Knolls Nature Center. He lives in South Elgin with his wife, Chelsea, and dog, Sophie.

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership organizes the two-day Holiday Homecoming event that concludes with the Electric Christmas Parade.

Board members Tony Valente and Pedro Rivas voted against the request. Valente said the district must “watch our spending” adding, “this is a district that spends extravagantly.” He acknowledged the amount of difference was not great, but he said “it has to stop somewhere.”

Valente also took exception when Cheryl Krauspe, the board’s president, stopped Valente during a lengthy comment and said she didn’t hear a question. Valente countered that he was commenting, “that’s what board members do,” and he added another comment about “administrators saying tax, tax, tax” before Krauspe banged her gavel. To that, Valente shouted, “I will not be censored. … You can tap that as much as you want.”

Rivas said he has children in the district, and he wants what is best for the district and its students. But he added he wanted to “think of the taxpayers.” He said “they voted us to be their voice” and he wanted to find a medium. Rivas has said in the past he would like more information about what might be cut if board members opted to levy at a rate lower than the maximum but higher than zero.

An Elburn resident, Mark Weintraub, spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting. He thanked Valented for standing up to voice opinions that might not always be popular, but he also added the difference between a “zero levy” and the maximum amount was “not really a lot of money.” He said there is much he would want the district to achieve, and “we can’t do it if we keep cutting.”

SUGAR GROVE – Teresa Witt, vice president of the Kaneland School District 302 Board, on Monday said the potential savings for a homeowner if the board were to adopt a “zero levy” wouldn’t be worth the “decimation” that she said the school district would experience.

Mulling over figures that showed a difference – for the owner of a $300,000 home – of $89 between a “zero levy” and requesting the full amount, Witt said she couldn’t vote against the full levy request.

The majority of the board agreed, and, by a 5-2 vote, the board approved a tentative tax levy that would seek the maximum amount the district could request.

“That, to me, is what does it – $89 isn’t what it costs for my family to go to Chili’s,” Witt said, adding, “to me, there is no question.”

Board members faced options that had been presented in detail at a previous meeting. The focus was the tax-cap restriction, which would be limited to the consumer price index. Julie-Ann Fuchs, the district’s associate superintendent, said it would have a maximum increase of 1.5 percent, and the board could choose any action from a 0 percent increase, a “zero levy,” and the maximum 1.5 percent.

Fuchs had said the impact of a “zero levy” would be a loss of as much as $824,000. She said that would mean significant cuts. Adopting a “zero levy” still would result in an increase in taxes, officials said.

The board ultimately voted to adopt a total tentative operating levy of $43,208,567.

According to figures provided Monday by Fuchs, the owner of a house worth $200,000 could expect to pay $5,063 in taxes, or $148 more than in 2013.

Final approval is set for the Dec. 15 meeting of the board, which starts at 7 p.m. at Kaneland Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove. A public hearing on the issue will take place at that

Village denies request for video gaming at gas station

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove village trustees last month decided not to issue a liquor license to a BP Express Lane gas station at Route 47 and Cross Street that could have allowed it to offer video gambling.

The issue was discussed at an Oct. 7 Committee of the Whole meeting.

Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said it was the consensus of the board not to grant the license.

“It was a business decision,” Michels said. “It was not the best location for a ‘pour’ license.”

A “pour” license allows those at an establishment to pour liquor.

He said there were several concerns about the proposal, including limited parking at the gas station and it is next to a busy intersection.

The gas station would need a “pour” license for the station to meet the state criteria for a video gambling license, Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger wrote in a memo to Michels and village trustees.

Michels noted residents in an advisory referendum last year approved video gambling by a narrow margin.

He said that means residents want village officials to use common sense in determining what businesses can have video gambling.

Video gambling is allowed in the village at three locations – The American Legion, Roundup Sports Bar and Grill and Open Range Southwest Grill.

Village staff also had concerns about the gas station proposal, Eichelberger wrote in the memo, adding the concerns were “related to safety and quality of life in the village.”

HOWARD DAVID HUSER Born: Sept. 21, 1958 Died: Nov. 11, 2014 Howard David Huser, 56 , of Saint Charles, Illinois, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2014, after more than two years of battling brain cancer.

He was born in Hannibal, Missouri on September 21, 1958, beloved son of Norma and the late Bob Huser. On September 2, 1978, in Saint Peters, Missouri, Dave married the love of his life, Nancy.

She survives along with daughter, Ashley, of Saint Charles, Illinois; and son and veteran, Ryan, of Saint Charles, Illinois. He is also survived by his brother, Dan Huser; sister, Veronica Buckner; sister inlaw, Stephanie Pope; and his two very best buddies, Bill Hogate and Kenny Boland.

He graduated from Fort Zumwalt High School, in O’Fallon, Missouri, in 1977. He was blessed to leverage his love of aviation and immediately began his career as a pilot.

Dave’s career in aviation spanned over 35 years, where he served as a pilot, flight instructor, and Vice

President at American Flyers. His passion for aviation was a legacy he passed to every flight student he encountered.

Dave and Nancy just celebrated 36 years of marriage and enjoyed spending time with their children, of whom Dave was immensely proud. He was an extremely supportive and loving husband, father, and friend. Many weekends were spent cheering for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs (as well as secretly, the St. Louis Cardinals).

He was an avid marathon runner, loved dogs, valued friendships, and enjoyed music. He was a very social and fun man who loved to make people laugh. A strong work ethic and personal integrity were core to his belief structure.

He will long be remembered for his positive attitude, loyalty, and infectious laugh.

Michael Allen Carlson of St. Charles, IL, born July 9, 1955, to Clare (Swede) and Lois Carlson passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home on November 8th 2014.

Mike was an avid outdoorsman.

He loved fishing, hunting and being amongst nature. He was a roofer his entire working career.

He is survived by his two daughters, Bambi and Christina Carlson; five grandchildren, Cassara, Mikey, Rhiannon, Evan, and Levi; mother, Lois Carlson, whom he dutifully assisted for several years; siblings, Gail, Joann, twin Ron, Johnny, Laure, Cindy, Jeannie; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clare Carlson.

Mike was a man of good nature and loved his family and friends.

Batavia Park district memorial program honors loved ones On any given day, I welcome you to take a stroll along the Riverwalk in the heart of beautiful downtown Batavia.

Throughout the area, you’ll notice a number of trees and benches marked by plaques.

These memorials serve as a tribute, a lasting memory of a loved one.

These memorials can be found in many of the Batavia Park District’s 40 park sites.

In fact, the district has nearly 200 memorials throughout the park system.

The district’s memorial program is an uplifting way to celebrate and commemorate the life of a loved one or to express sympathy or condolences for the loss of a friend or family member.

The district offers a memorial tree or bench to mark an important date or occasion.

Memorial trees leave a lasting legacy that can serve as a living tribute and celebration of life and will be enjoyed by countless generations to come.

Trees are planted twice a year, in the spring and the fall.

Memorial benches add beauty to a park and provide a useful amenity for patrons to enjoy as they relax and appreciate their surroundings.

The Batavia Park District has allowed memorials in parks for many years, but it wasn’t until recently that the district developed a more formal program. The new application process has been streamlined and will be more efficient for families who are often dealing with the loss of a

Fox River fire district engine receives upgrade

CAMPTON HILLS – Until last week, paramedics with the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District would have to wait for an ambulance to arrive at a scene before they could begin advanced treatment, Chief Greg Benson said.

Now, he said, an engine at Station 1 in Campton Hills is equipped with Advanced Life Support materials.

Although the ALS engine can’t provide patient transport, it will allow paramedics to start initial on-scene treatment before an ambulance arrives, Benson said.

“It will come in handy for the situations where the ambulance is tied up on another call,” he said.

This is the first engine to receive an ALS upgrade in the district, Benson said. He said there are plans to add the

equipment to an engine at the east-side station next year.

“The demand is greater over here at this point,” he said, referring to Station 1, 40W361 Route 64, Campton Hills.

He didn’t immediately know the cost of the equipment.

Even with the additional emergency capability, Benson said the fire district still encourages people to get trained in CPR. The time before emergency responders can get to the scene is critical, as well, he said.

“We offer it,” he said of the training, “and we encourage it.”

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com World-renowned tightrope walker Nik Wallenda said he put his faith in God when he crossed a high wire suspended between two Chicago skyscrapers more than 500 feet in the air.

Wallenda had no safety net or harness to catch him in case something went wrong Nov. 2 during the walk.

“My faith plays a key role in what I do,” Wallenda said in a phone interview Tuesday. “It’s important that I stay extremely calm in the stressful situations that I’m in. Many people are going through stressful times in life right now. With God, all things are possible, and that really is what my message is about. It’s more about encouraging and inspiring and sharing my testimony and the challenges that I have been through.”

Wallenda will be sharing more about his life and faith during a live interview this weekend at Christ Community Church, at the northwest corner of Randall and Bolcum roads near St. Charles. The interview will be during the church’s regular weekend services at 5 p.m. Saturday and at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday.

“For some reason, I was called to this,” Wallenda said. “This is my ministry, and God can use anyone in any line of work to touch the lives of others. That’s really what my life is about.”

During the walk, Wallenda set two world records, for highest incline tightrope walk and highest blindfolded tightrope walk, according to Guinness World Records’ website. He is a seventh-generation member of The Flying Wallendas family.

Wallenda said his faith carries him through each death-defying act, which was made more dangerous by the fact that he donned a blindfold for one of the walks in Chicago. But

Wallenda said he always is looking for new challenges.

“My whole life has been about inspiring people to overcome challenges,” Wallenda said. “I live by three words – never give up. In order to be an example to others, I need to continue to make myself better at what I do. I’ve done this my entire life, so it’s easy to become complacent when you’ve done something your entire life. It really is about continuing to make myself better about what I do and hoping that inspires others to become better at what they do.”

Wallenda said he was filled with excitement as he embarked on his two walks. But he said he’s not an adrenaline junkie.

“I do what I do to carry on a legacy that my family carried on for so long, and again, it’s about inspiring people,” Wallenda said. “But of course, there’s a lot of joy when you break two world records in one night. It’s something that you’ve trained so hard for, and I’ve dedicated my life to this.”

Wallenda said he hopes his latest accomplishment will inspire others to do their best.

“I was able to do it by dedicating enough time, practice and patience, as well as working hard,” he said.

“And really, that is what my life story is about, encouraging others to pursue their dreams and to work hard.”

GENEVA – The Geneva School District 304 Board unanimously approved a resolution this week for a 2014 levy of nearly $84 million, an increase of $3.7 million over last year’s extension of about $80 million, officials said.

A property tax levy is the amount of property taxes a school district or other taxing body requests for the next fiscal year, based on its needs and the projected equalized assessed value in the district, officials said.

Taxing bodies in Illinois typically adopt a levy in December and receive the tax money in the spring, officials said. Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Donna Oberg said the district is taking the full consumer price index increase of 1.5 percent in its levy.

“We’ve taken a reduced consumer price index for two years,” Oberg said.

“In 2012, the CPI was 3 percent, and we took 1.5 percent. In 2013, it was 1.7 percent and we took 1 percent.”

The proposed levy increase will raise the property tax of a house valued at $315,000 by about $191, officials said.

Oberg said one of the reasons officials chose not to take a lesser increase is because the district will be looking to refund its callable bonds – that is, refinance its building bonds to a lower rate.

“When you issue bonds, you cannot refund them – you cannot refinance them – for 10 years,” Oberg said. “And so, 10 years is coming up, and we can finally do that refunding and issue [the bonds] at a lower interest rate, and carry debt out an additional four years, so we can level the bond payment at $15.5 million instead of $25 million.”

Oberg said by taking the full consumer price index, the district ultimately would save money for taxpayers with tax abatements, putting additional funds aside to reduce the debt.

“We tax what we feel we need, but what we have not used, we gave it back,” Oberg said. “Over the last three years, we have abated back almost $15 million. It is significant.”

Abatement is a tool public bodies can use to reduce debt by taking cash on hand to lower a debt payment, officials said.

The board is expected to act on the levy at its Dec. 8 meeting without a tax hearing because the increase is less than 5 percent, Oberg said.

Batavia United Way seeks help for families KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – For the ninth year, Batavia United Way is collaborating with Batavia School District 101 to buy gifts and food for families who are struggling to make ends meet.

This year, the district has identified more than 40 families that are to be adopted, which is the largest number ever. Although many families already are sponsored, more help is necessary, according to a news release.

According to Melinda Kintz, executive director of Batavia United Way, there are several ways community members and businesses can participate.

• Adopt a family. Those interested can call Kintz at 630877-2780. Adoptable families are matched to sponsor families or businesses. The sponsors will buy appropriate gifts and drop them off during the evening hours Dec. 15 at Rotolo Middle School.

• Buy grocery gift cards that will help provide a holiday meal.

• Buy gift cards from merchants that will provide a fam-

ily with items for the holiday – cards for children’s activities, movies and low- to average-priced restaurants, among other items.

• Make a monetary donation: Mail checks made payable to Batavia United Way to Batavia United Way, P.O. Box 372, Batavia, IL 60510. Donations also can be made online at www.BataviaUnitedWay. org.

“Every year the number of families needing assistance grows, but thankfully, the community generously responds to cover the need,” Kintz said in the news release.

Several other Batavia groups are contributing to the Adopt A Family program.

CHIP IN Batavia plans to buy and organize a grocery bag of fresh produce and breads for each family and sponsor an “Adopt A Bag” drive so each family also receives a brown grocery bag with laundry detergent, toilet paper, facial tissues, bar soap and shampoo.

Additionally, the Batavia Woman’s Club will provide an age-appropriate stocking for each child younger than 18.

the mandate would not be without cost, both monetary (anywhere from $46 billion to $149 billion over 10 years) and human. Congress will have to deal with the monetary cost somehow, but the falling deficit has made such concerns less urgent and Republicans hardly can be expected to oppose the repeal of a tax.

The human cost is more of a priority. If there is no employer mandate, many workers might lose their insurance – but it’s worth pointing out that most employers still will provide it as a benefit, as they do now.

Still, the federal government needs to ensure those who lose insurance be able to get it as cheaply as they would have gotten it from their employers.

Congress also would need

to amend Obamacare to clarify that people who buy insurance from a federally-run health exchange – the federal government operates exchanges for 36 states that declined to build their own – are eligible for federal insurance subsidies. Unclear language in the law has left that provision open to judicial challenge, and the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case on this matter this term.

Republicans will be tempted to wait for that decision, hoping that a favorable ruling effectively will gut the law in many states. (They are not wrong: It would.) But the ruling also could go the other way. They might prefer to strike a deal eliminating the employer mandate than to

take a judicial gamble.

Not all workers make enough to qualify for those subsidies. For them, the solution is for more states to expand Medicaid.

Of course, Republicans in Congress can’t tell their state counterparts what to do. But many Republican governors, eager to reap the economic benefits of expansion, would appreciate political cover to do so.

No one need pretend any of this will be easy, or even likely. But eliminating the law’s employer mandate, and amending other provisions to ensure workers can receive affordable insurance, offers a chance to both reduce the law’s scope and expand its reach. It would be a pretty neat trick.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva senior Kirby Einck inadvertently channeled her upcoming posthigh school lifestyle when discussing her strides in her sport of choice.

“I don’t wait for the opportunity,” she said. “I make the opportunity happen.”

That’s Einck talking girls tennis, not pitching a new slogan to West Point or the U.S. Army, for whom she’ll compete next fall.

The Kane County Chronicle Girls Tennis Player of the Year for the third straight fall, Einck stormed into uncharted territory in the final season of a standout career.

Defeating Wauconda’s Sarah Hackman, Peoria

Richwoods’ Anna Liu and Stevenson’s Zoe Manion – all in straight sets – in the opening day of the IHSA state tournament propelled her into the championship singles draw on Day 2 for the first time in four state trips.

A 4-2 tournament finish gave her a 26-4 record for the season, along with no regrets.

Einck leaves the program with more than 100 career victories and a legacy that started building from the time she first set up shop on Geneva’s Court 1 in 2011.

“Everything superlative that you could say about her is going to be true,” Vikings coach Maureen Weiler said.

Einck actually took her first pulse on Geneva’s courts as a middle schooler.

Her mom, Karen, served as

Weiler’s JV assistant for a few seasons before asking to help out on the varsity level, ensuring she’d be able to see each of Einck’s matches.

Weiler had no rebuttal, and it had nothing to do with her first rendezvous with Karen Einck during a recreational match at Aurora’s Vaughan Center years ago.

“Our first encounter, she reminded me, was we played each other and she won,” Weiler said. “After that, I found out who she was and who her daughter was.”

Boy, did Einck assert herself. As a freshman, she won 26 matches and advanced to state. She recorded 29 victories as a sophomore and 27 as a junior, returning to state both times.

Visits to her soon-to-be home campus in West Point, New York, and some inclement weekend weather shortened Einck’s slate of regular-season matches as a senior. A constant focus

on conditioning – both the mental and physical variety – routinely kept Einck dialed in, however.

“Definitely after my last match, it hadn’t hit me yet.

Like, ‘Oh, it’s over,’ ” Einck said. “But I’ve kind of been reflecting back on all four years that I’ve been here, and it’s kind of sad because that will be the last time I’ll ever be a tennis player for Geneva. But it’s been a great experience, and I’m so glad I could finish the year strong.”

Einck’s final match – an eventual 6-3, 6-2 loss to Hinsdale Central’s Sophia Haleas – begged her to abandon her aggressive style.

Haleas favored a strategy of what Einck and Weiler called “moon-balling” – artfully lobbing her volleys toward Haleas’ opponent’s back line in a bid to keep her out of sync.

Einck’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division and St. Charles East Sectional titles helped boost Geneva to team victories in both events, building momentum for the postseason.

Committing to West Point midway through the season alleviated some pressure, too.

It might also shorten her usual round of offseason USTA tournaments. Einck competed in a tournament at Notre Dame this past weekend.

Messa spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab at Tuesday’s practice. The following is an edited transcript: Redbird Arena has that high, college ceiling. Is that tricky in terms of depth perception?

It’s all right. It’s hard to get used to at first, but we practice the day before, and so I’m pretty used to it by the time the games starts, so it’s OK. To have the kind of weapons you have at your disposal, I’m sure you’re the envy of

a lot of setters. … What’s your strategy to get a lot of people involved in addition to [standout Molly Haggerty]?

We try to move Molly around a lot because, especially if we leave Molly on the outside, the blockers just know she’s going to be there, so we try to move her around a lot and we like to use everyone else, too, because that also draws the block away from the stronger hitters.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with a difficult homework assignment, who would it be and why?

I would pick Mary Boken because she’s a year older than me and I look up to her, she’s our captain, she’s a great leader.

She’s very good on the court, but she’s very good off the court, too, academically. She’s in a lot of honors classes … she’s a great role model.

Kaneland’s Barnes jumps at Illini offer Long jumper to continue his career at Illinois Kaneland senior Ben Barnes thinks his championship pedigree was his ultimate selling point on the recruiting trail.

Barnes, who committed to the Illinois men’s track and field program Monday, said the Illini are searching for athletes with a record of thriving under pressure. Barnes won the IHSA Class 2A long jump state championship in the spring, leaping 23 feet, 5 inches.

“Just because they know I like to win,” Barnes said.

“I know how to win … and their goal is if they can get every state champion from Illinois, they can be a good team, and they’re pretty strong overall, but not as strong as they want to be in jumps.”

Barnes said he picked Illinois over Iowa, with another Big Ten program, Wisconsin, also in the mix. In addition to financial considerations, Barnes said he appreciated the in-state flavor of the Illini’s roster and thinks the program is generally on the upswing.

“It’s not too big, but not too Ben Barnes small. It’s that big university feel in the Big Ten, and academic-wise they have a lot to offer athletes, all the tutoring and meal plans and stuff they have now. … I like the whole package.”

Barnes was a reserve guard in the Knights’ basketball program last season but said he opted not to go out for the team this winter to channel his energy toward continued strides in the long jump and triple jump.

Barnes also was part of Kaneland’s third-place 4x200 meter relay team at last year’s Class 2A state meet in Charleston.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois is still very much alive for the Mid-American Conference title.

After Tuesday’s 27-24 win over Toledo at Huskie Stadium – NIU’s fifth straight win over the Rockets – the Huskies (82, 5-1 MAC) control their own destiny in the MAC West with games at Ohio and Western Michigan remaining.

Two touchdown runs by Cameron Stingily in the fourth quarter helped seal the victory. Stingily was strong in the fourth quarter again and finished with 81 yards rushing.

NIU got on the board in the first quarter with a 37-yard field goal by Christian Hagan, the first of the true freshman’s career. The Huskies took a 10-0 lead on a 64-yard TD pass from

out its scoring with a 19-yard Hagan field goal and TD runs of 4 and 2 yards by Stingily.

Macon was the third quarterback the Rockets (6-4, 5-1 MAC) used Tuesday. Backup Michael Julian started, and was ineffective before leaving with an injury in the first half. Taking his place was regular starter Logan Woodside, who was questionable with a leg injury.

After a slow series from Woodside, Toledo coach Matt Campbell switched to Macon, who came to Toledo as a QB before switching to receiver. Macon was able to hit Jones for the TD with his first pass of the year.

Macon ran the zone read well, finishing with 97 yards rushing, and went 8 of 11 passing for 140 yards.

Rose’s injury comments put priorities in question

Very poor.

After his best performance of the season Monday in the victory over the Pistons, Rose discussed Tuesday the sprained ankles that forced him to miss four games.

That’s when the session with the media became a bit of a head-scratcher concerning the priorities of the Bulls’ point guard.

“I’m good, man,” Rose said, when asked to assess how he’s been playing so far. “I feel I’ve been managing myself pretty good. I know a lot of people get mad when they see me sit out.

But I think a lot of people don’t understand that when I sit out it’s not because of this year.

I’m thinking about long term.

I’m thinking about after I’m done with basketball, having graduations to go to, having meetings to go to.

“I don’t want to be in my meetings all sore or be at my son’s graduation all sore just because of something I did in the past. Just learning and being smart.”

Learning? Maybe. Being smart? That’s all relative to the situation.

The current situation for the Bulls is that they are in win-

now mode. The situation for Rose was he admittedly had no swelling in the ankles but was just not feeling the burst that he likes to have. The situation with Rose’s teammates was Joakim Noah has been playing with one good knee, Taj Gibson sprained his ankle on the same night as Rose and missed one game, and Jimmy Butler has played the past Derrick Rose six games with a taped left thumb and a taped up shoulder.

Rose bringing up being comfortable at graduations and in future business meetings after basketball? Not exactly what a blue-collar team playing in a perceived blue-collar city wants, or needs, to hear.

The kicker in all the Rose drama over the past week, however, was after he gutted out a 31-minute performance Wednesday against Milwaukee, and did so noticeably laboring, Rose said afterward he learned he doesn’t need to be 100 percent to impact a game.

The 2011 MVP went only 4 for 10 in that win, scoring 13 points, but handed out seven assists and had two steals.

Then he inexplicably opted out of the next two games, including Saturday’s loss to Boston.

Asked Tuesday whether he actually had learned playing at less than 100 percent was OK, Rose’s responses were again cloudy.

“In Milwaukee, I was just trying to get the win and go out there and play a game,” Rose said. “I don’t have to score all the time to affect the NBA game. But I think everybody just wanted to see me score the ball. It’s fine. That’s the way I normally play. I think everybody loves the excitement.”

Asked whether he’s been fighting the idea of playing at less than 100 percent, he replied, “I’m not fighting it at all.

I know it. I’ve been playing this way ever since high school. In high school, I only averaged 13 or 12 points and we won two championships. So everything I’m doing now, being on a good team, actually playing with guys who can really affect the game themselves on the offensive side and defensive side.

I just have to find my role in that game. Whatever the game needs at that time, that’s what I’m going to try to bring to the game.’’

What he brought to the Detroit game was 24 points and seven assists. He came out unscathed, ready to face Toronto on Thursday.

Hopefully, that’s the most important meeting Rose has scheduled on his calendar the next few days.

Cubs seek trade for Zimmermann

Multiple sources said Tuesday the Cubs are in talks with the Washington Nationals to acquire right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, a two-time AllStar who has averaged 200 innings pitched during the past

And he’s only one of several All-Star-caliber pitchers – along with All-Star catcher Russell Martin – the Cubs think they can acquire if their strategy plays out according Jordan to plan, one Zimmermann source said.

Zimmermann, 28, would be a younger – and potentially cheaper – alternative to the

higher-end free agents on the market this offseason, although the package to acquire him would have to include at least one of the Cubs’ touted young middle infielders, sources said.

One source said the teams have enough mutual interest in a trade that names have been discussed. Another said he expected the Cubs to complete the deal and to sign free-agent right-hander Justin Masterson, who blamed minor injuries for seasonlong struggles in 2014 after an All-Star season in 2013.

Artificial sweeteners may not decrease calories after all Dear Doctor K: For 20 years, I’ve substituted artificial sweeteners for sugar in my coffee, and switched to diet soft drinks to avoid obesity and the diseases that overweight people are prone to, like Type 2 diabetes. Now I hear that new research says that’s a bad idea. What is going on?

Dear Reader: Here’s what’s not confusing: More than a modest amount of sugar each day is not good for you. Nothing’s changed there. The sweet tooth that many of us have (I plead guilty) leads us to eat too much sugar.

Sugar contains easily absorbed calories. That makes it harder to maintain or achieve a healthy weight. It also increases our risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks and fruit juices are particularly bad offenders.

The development of no-calorie artificial sweeteners, like saccharine, sucralose and aspartame, seemed like a godsend. Like you, I switched from regular drinks to “diet” drinks a long time ago.

Artificial sweeteners taste as sweet as (or sweeter than) sugar, but contain virtually no calories.

What’s not to like?

In previous columns, I’ve

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff said that there was some evidence that consuming artificial sweeteners might increase our appetite for sugar-containing sweets. That is definitely not a good thing, if true. I still regard it as unproven.

But recently, a scientific study was published in a prestigious scientific journal, Nature, that set me back on my heels. If other scientists confirm this work, it has important implications for all of us. To tell you what the study showed, I first need to explain a little biology.

Many foods contain carbohydrates (“carbs”). Carbohydrates resemble a chain with multiple links. When they enter our gut, the links in the chain are separated by digestion. Table sugar is a simple chain: just two links, easily separated. It’s the single links that mainly are absorbed into our blood. The most common is called glucose. When your doctor measures your blood sugar, glucose is what is being measured.

Any food, say a slice of an orange, contains calories. But

those calories add to our weight, and influence whether we might develop diabetes, only if they are efficiently broken down into single links – glucose – and then are absorbed into our body.

Our intestines contain trillions of bacteria of different types. Some types are very good at breaking up carbohydrates into glucose; other types are not.

If you’re a person with lots of the first type of bacteria living inside you, every slice of orange you eat will lead to more calories getting into your blood.

The recent study presents evidence indicating that artificial sweeteners may encourage the growth of the types of bacteria that generate more glucose – and, hence, lead us to absorb more calories. In other words, while the sweeteners don’t contain calories, they may cause us to absorb more calories.

If other scientific studies confirm these findings, I will be further lowering my modest consumption of artificial sweeteners.

Teenager fed up with boyfriend’s ‘babies’ mama’ Dr. Wallace: I really need your advice right away because my life has become very complicated. I’m 19, and the guy I’m involved with is 24. We have been dating for six months and living together for two months. The two of us met at a party and hit it off right away – it was love at first sight for both of us.

My problem is his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his two children. Tony and this woman had been living together for more than two years when he moved out. He told me about her but that they were not living together when I met him. He also told me that there was no possibility that he was ever going to marry her.

But now that she knows about me, we have both had to get our phone numbers changed because this woman is doing everything she possibly can to cause trouble for us. She even comes by the place where I work and tries to get me fired. She tells the manager that I am a home-wrecker because I stole her children’s father.

Tony had begged her to get an abortion when she told him she was pregnant, but she wouldn’t do it so it’s her own fault that she has two children. If I ever got pregnant, I’d do the sensible thing and have an abortion, and Tony told me he would pay for it.

At the present time he isn’t paying any child support and he wants to avoid paying, so I told him that we should move to another state so she wouldn’t find us, but he won’t do that

Second, I do not see a happy future for you with Tony. He has not shown any moral standards, has avoided true commitment and has evaded his responsibilities as a father.

Third, this other woman is more than Tony’s ex-girlfriend – she is the mother of his two children.

My advice? Tell Tony that it’s time for him to become an honorable, respectable human being by financially supporting the two innocent young children who are his responsibility.

Since you are probably going to continue playing house with Tony, you should at least both use birth control so that this sad situation will not become even more complicated.

I don’t think there’s much you can do to get the “ex” to stop bothering you. But if she ever contacts me about this mess, I’d advise her to get an attorney and do everything the law allows to receive financial support for the children.

Douglas Adams, an Englishman who wrote the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” trilogy in four books, said, “Nothing travels faster than light, with the possible exception of bad news, which follows its own rules.”

Bridge has a variety of rules, most of which have exceptions.

For example, suppose you are faced with A-J-9-5-4 in the dummy opposite Q-10-8-7 in your hand. How would you normally play the suit?

Right – you would take the finesse. In theory, 50 percent of the time you will get five tricks. To try to drop a singleton king offside has only about a 6 percent chance of success. But why might you lead the queen from your hand and, after lefty plays low, put up dummy’s ace?

Now look at the North-South hands in today’s deal. South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest heart five: three, queen, king. How should declarer continue?

South starts with seven top tricks: three spades, one heart (first trick), one diamond and two clubs. It looks obvious to take the diamond finesse at trick two, but that does not work well here. East wins with his king and returns the heart 10 (high from a remaining doubleton). The defenders take four heart tricks for down one.

Declarer should realize that if West has the diamond king, the contract is always safe. South’s remaining heart jack-six is a stopper with West on lead. So declarer should lead his diamond queen to tempt West to cover with the king if he has it, then rise with dummy’s ace. When the king drops, South takes 11 tricks. It is a textbook avoidance play.
