“I believe in letting people know what a difficult job it is,” the 88-year-old said.

Pennington – who spent a year and a half on the front lines in Italy when he wasn’t in the hospital battling an illness – was among the veterans gathered Monday for the Veterans Day ceremony in downtown St. Charles.

The event, which included a salute to the flag and the playing of taps, was moved from the Freedom Shrine behind the St. Charles Police Station to the St. Charles Fire Department headquarters because of the weather.

Mayor Ray Rogina read the Veterans Day proclamation, which called upon all citizens to observe the holiday.

“No, we do not memorialize war,” he read, “but we memorialize and honor all those who have gone to war for our country, and especially those

who did not come home and that includes those who are still listed as prisoners of war or missing in action from any conflict.”

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918.

“Veterans Day has changed from the years past,” said John DePauw, sergeant of

arms for AMVETS, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Decades ago, he said, a whistle would blow at 11 a.m., prompting Americans to face the east and cover their heart with their hand. Now, Veterans Day has grown to include first responders – the police, firefighters and emergency personnel.

“It’s an honor to all veter-

ans, but especially to those we lost,” Pennington said, adding it is reassuring that people continue to honor them.

In his case, Pennington said, a foot infection saved his life because the man who replaced him on the front lines was killed.

Pennington was 19 when he went to war.

“I saw things a 19-year-old should never see,” he said.

Fire contained to cornfield in St. Charles Township

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A fire that damaged a cornfield in St. Charles Township over the weekend serves as a reminder about the caution needed when burning yard waste, Chief Greg Benson of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District said Monday.

At about 12:49 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to a cornfield adjacent to Burr Road, about a half mile north of Dean Street, for a fire apparently caused by malfunctioning farm equipment, Benson said.

The blaze started in the middle of the field and was advancing away from the road because of the wind, Benson said.

The ground was covered

with corn stubble – what’s left of the plant after harvest – so only specialized equipment could bring water to the fire, Benson said.

“That’s not ground that you can drive a large fire truck on,” he said.

Fox River and Countryside received assistance on location from Pingree Grove, St. Charles, Elburn and South

Elgin, Benson said.

Firefighters successfully kept the fire from reaching the tree line, Benson said, noting the field is surrounded by woods on three sides.

There was no loss, he said, and nobody was injured.

Although a malfunctioning tractor sparked the fire, Benson said, it showed how difficult it can be to control

and extinguish such fires.

He said people should keep that in mind when burning leaves.

“Wildfires like that can get out of control very, very quickly,” Benson said.

Those conducting burns should check their community’s rules regarding burning because they can vary from municipality, Benson said.

LOCALS VOICE CONCERNS N. Aurora residents express worries, frustrations about mining operations

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – When she steps into her backyard, Chesterfield subdivision resident Marian Samuels said she hears the constant sound of a rock crusher and trucks used in Lafarge Conco’s nearby mining operations.

“They go almost all night,” said Samuels, who has lived in her home with her husband, Lew, for the past 12 years.

“You can see big clouds of dust coming from there. I have asthma, and the dust does prevent me from coming outdoors in the summer. We don’t expect them to stop working, but just put more of an effort [in] to keep down the dust and noise.”

The couple also is frustrated that North Aurora village trustees recently gave Lafarge the green light to expand operations. Village trustees on Sept. 23 approved an agreement allowing Lafarge to start mining under the east portion of an adjacent ComEd property.

Lafarge is at 105 Conco St., along Route 25 in North Aurora, and Chesterfield subdivision is directly to the northeast of the ComEd property.

In a statement, Lafarge officials said that: “the mining industry is a heavily regulated one and Lafarge is committed to working cooperatively with all its regulatory authorities.

All noise, dust and blasting levels are monitored regularly by MSHA [Mine Safety and Health Administration]. No noise, dust or blasting readings off Lafarge property have been found in excess of the regulatory limits. All mining and blasting activities take place underground.”

Lafarge acquired the North Aurora site in 2006. Since then, Lafarge officials said that many additional measures have been put in place to ensure that all levels remain below the standards, including increased watering of the roads on Lafarge’s property – as well as its crushing equipment – to reduce dust; and lim-

North Aurora village trustees recently gave the Lafarge North America mine permission to expand its mining operations. iting noise from machinery or MSHA-mandated truck backup alarms to operation hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Company officials also stated that electronic detonators and other precise initiation techniques are being used to minimize vibrations, and Lafarge has agreed with the village to ensure its blasting be at a level that is 40 percent below the U.S. Bureau of Mines recommended limit.

Chesterfield residents, however, are not happy.

“It has gotten a lot worse,” Lew Samuels said. “They [village officials] don’t seem to be concerned at all.”

Chesterfield resident Dimitri Sidiropoulos blamed the cracks that run throughout his house on the blasting that goes on at Lafarge’s operations. He and his family have lived in the house since 2002.

“You have normal cracks when a house settles, but not like this,” said Sidiropoulos, who operates a business that maintains commercial buildings and homes. “This is not

supposed to happen. If they keep doing what they are doing, it will deteriorate all these homes out here.”

Members of the Chesterfield Homeowners Association said they were not properly notified about the September Village Board meeting in which village trustees gave Lafarge North America permission to expand its mining operations.

Patricia Graw, president of the Chesterfield Homeowners Association, has said no residents were at that meeting because they were not properly notified.

“The village of North Aurora has decided to silence our voices,” the Chesterfield Homeowners Association Board and Chesterfield homeowners said in a Oct. 30 letter to North Aurora Village President Dale Berman, village trustees and others.

Berman said the village met all legal requirements for notification. He noted that mining operations on the Lafarge property date back to before the Chesterfield subdi-

vision was built.

Because of the homeowners’ previous concerns regarding gas lines underneath the north portion of the ComEd property, Lafarge has decided not to expand to the northern ComEd property. Village trustees in September approved the agreement with several conditions, including that underground blasting be allowed only between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., unless consent is first given by the village; that the mining not create excessive noise; and that mining operations be kept at least 1,000 feet from the closest Chesterfield home.

“We have worked with Chesterfield residents as far as wanting to keep the dust down and keep the noise down,” Berman said.

He said the village is able to monitor the blasting that Lafarge is doing to make sure it falls within the standards allowed for the operation. It does that through a seismograph set up around the perimeter of the mine.

“We have to live together,” Berman said. “There is no way we can stop the mining.

We feel they have been good neighbors. They have worked to improve the situation.”

Ribbon-cutting marks end of construction

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The final phase of construction along Route 64 has wrapped up, and St. Charles city and chamber officials, along with business owners along the route, celebrated Monday afternoon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Peter Norton, owner of Culver’s in St. Charles, where the ribbon-cutting was held, said construction started the day the restaurant opened on April 16, 2012. He said the ribbon-cutting was a celebration for all businesses along the east part of Route 64, also known as Main Street, and said “it’s like a new opportunity for us.”

“It was too much of an inconvenience for people to come out here. ... Now, the road’s wide open,” he said. “I don’t know what’s smoother now, the road or Culver’s frozen custard.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation began a reconstruction and widening project on Route 64 between Seventh Avenue in St. Charles to Route 59 in West Chicago in

Business owners and city officials celebrated a ribbon-cutting event in September to mark the completion of construction from Seventh

Avenue in St. Charles to Kirk Road. The second phase of construction was completed around Oct. 1, said City Administrator Mark Koenen.

Monday’s celebration

marked the completion of construction from 38th Avenue to Route 59 in West Chicago.

Koenen said some construction cleanup will continue, but should be wrapped up soon.

He said lanes were widened from four to six in that area.

“All the motorists are glad it’s over,” he said. “[The construction] opens up opportunities for redevelopment and new development on Main Street, which is all part of the environment. The city needs to provide that for businesses to be successful.”

Marwan Taib, owner of the Spotted Fox Ale House, said he feels relieved now that the road is open again, especially in time for the holiday season.

He said during the summer, he worried about being able to stay open, but coming up with creative and competitive specials helped.

“We think the future is going to be great,” he said.

Tom Hansen, chair of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, said the construction project has been “long and drawn-out,” but now that it’s finished, it’s something for chamber members and merchants to celebrate.

“For the chamber, this is a very happy day,” he said.

“Customers can get to their place of business a lot easier, and it’s safer on Route 64.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Over the last 25 years, Pam Burgeson has written more than 20,000 pages of minutes from some 750 school board meetings in Geneva School District 304.

Burgeson has been administrative assistant to four superintendents – Don Marcotte, John Murphy, Michael Jacoby and currently Kent Mutchler – as well as 31 different board members.

This month, Burgeson received the Illinois Association of School Boards’ 2013 Holly Jack Outstanding Service Award, named for a longtime administrative assistant, Holly Jack, who died in 2008. Burgeson was one of 35 nominees.

After the school board announced her award at a recent meeting, everyone in the room gave her a standing ova-

tion, surprising Burgeson.

“I was overwhelmed with shock – it was nice though,” Burgeson, 66, of Geneva, said. “I was just there, doing my job, and until I heard the applause over my shoulder, I did not know friends and colleagues were there.”

Mutchler and the school Pam board nominatBurgeson ed Burgeson as a person who demonstrates performance, initiative, innovation, staff development, self-improvement, passion and dedication.

Board member Mary Stith said Burgeson’s award was “just a wonderful way for her to be recognized in her last year.”

Burgeson will retire from the district in June, after 33 years with the district.

“There were a lot of people up for the award, but the number of people who came forward in support of her showed what kind of respect she had,” Stith said. “She is so deserving, and I’m just tickled for her.”

Board member Kelly Nowak added that Burgeon’s award “is so well-deserved.”

Both Stith and Nowak said what Burgeson does for the board and superintendent makes her “indispensable.”

“As a new board member coming on the board, her advice was invaluable,” Nowak said. “And her access to information was phenomenal … . Her command of history is so essential to us ... She’s a treasure.”

Stith said Burgeson’s organizing of the district’s files is extensive.

“She is the person you call – she has everything categorized,” Stith said.

Before she became the superintendent’s secretary, Burgeson started with the district as a part-time secretary to a school psychologist and social worker from 1981 to 1988, later becoming a part-time aide in the developmental preschool program at Harrison.

Burgeson said she has no

big plans for retirement, outside of spending more time with her three grandchildren.

“I will enjoy not having to get up and go anywhere on a snowy day,” Burgeson said.

“People think everybody gets a ‘snow day,’ but 12-month employees do not get snow days.”

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Mary Morgan, manager of Carroll Tower in downtown St. Charles, had tears in her eyes Monday afternoon after a visit from Wredling Middle School eighth-graders.

During a brief visit, the students delivered baked goods to the residents and letters to veterans thanking them for their service. A quartet also played the national anthem, to which several Carroll Tower residents sang along.

Tony White, an assistant principal at the school, said Carroll Tower was on a list of 10 places the students planned to visit that afternoon as a way to celebrate Veterans Day. “We’re trying to get to as many places as we can,” he said, noting another group of students was doing the same.

About nine veterans live in Carroll Tower, Morgan said.

Madeline Slack and Rita Radloff were among those gathered for the visit. The women served in the Marines in the 1950s, they said, noting their work was mostly clerical.

“It was just very nice that they would take time out of their day,” Slack said of the students.

Camille Scalia, whose son Cody participated in the event, said she helped arrange the visit to Carroll Tower, where her great aunt lives.

“I thought it was a very nice thing they were doing,” she said.

ELBURN – Sarah “Sally” Compton, 91, of Elburn, passed away peacefully at her home Friday evening, Nov. 8, 2013, where she was lovingly cared for by her family. As the new day dawned, Sally was greeted not only by the angels, but by her father, William, and husband, Dave, who both passed within one day of each other (William on Nov. 9 and Dave on Nov. 7), many years apart.

Shortly before midnight on the 8th, the long awaited reunion began, and she was escorted into eternity with Dave on her left and her dad on her right.

She was born July 2, 1922, the daughter of William and Lee (Zimmermann) Bangs in Geneva.

Sally grew up in Geneva and attended Putney Boarding School in Putney, Vt. She graduated in 1942 from the School of Horticulture in Ambler, Pa. Sally returned to her roots in Geneva where she worked at Little Traveler for many years and cared for her ailing mother. A combination of fate and cupid introduced her to a certain gentleman who possessed the other half of her soul.

Sally and David Compton were united in marriage Aug. 16, 1952.

They made their home on David’s family farm on Pouley Road in Elburn, where she and Dave worked side by side, sharing the daily chores from sunrise to sunset. Sally shared Dave’s love and life on the farm, but they both also gave of their hearts and time to their community, as well.

Sally donated 15 years of her time creating and organizing the 4-H Dog Training Project for any child wanting to show their dog at the Kane County Fair. She also knitted over 100 stocking caps a year for over a decade, which she

donated to Snug Hugs for Kids. Her fresh-baked bread, a dozen eggs and a jar of homemade jam were gifts she gave freely to anyone who she thought needed a “pick-me-up,” including – at one time – an entire fire department fighting a barn fire.

Sally pulled up her van that had been piled high with enough sandwiches, hot chocolate and coffee for everyone in attendance. When Christmas time came rolling around, Sally became a baking machine.

Homemade cookies were made from scratch and filled with double the love before being sent out to all their family, friends, businesses and more.

Sally was a member of the Kane County Farm Bureau and Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District. She took her dog training experience with 4-H to the FVDTC, a dog training club for the Fox Valley area, where she created the hospitality table and was the first recipient of an annual award created in her honor for Outstanding Service.

Sally had the kindest heart and the warmest smile for miles around.

Her hospitality and hard work spoke volumes about her dedication to her community. She was a loving mother and devoted wife, making sure that no one went without.

Losing her father when she was only 8 and later her daughter, and a son in infancy, plumbed the depth of her soul so that when you had loved and lost, there was someone there who knew and understood the pain that life could bring. Her love of animals rivaled the love she had for family and her dogs. In the last days, there was a dog always by her side, helping to share the burden and return the unconditional love.

She is survived by three children, Mark (Patty) Compton of Oneida, Kit Compton of Batavia and Robin Urich of Elburn; five grandchildren, Krista (Greg) Peck and their son, Matthew James, all of Cambridge, Kelly

Pet show brings more than cats, dogs to area

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Deb Moreland, owner of Furry Friends Traveling Petting Zoo, brought many recognizable animals – including a goose, a turtle and a skunk – to the Chicago Pet Show this weekend, but the creature she kept on a leash routinely stumped visitors.

“It’s called a Patagonian cavy,” she told them. “He’s a rodent from Argentina.”

The exotic animal was among an assortment of creatures people could see at the two-day event, which ended Sunday afternoon at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

Joe and Robyn Kovar brought their 2-year-old daughter, Lyra, to the pet show because, as the Geneva residents said, she loves animals.

Which is her favorite?

Both thought the girl liked dogs best.

But, Robyn Kovar added, “the turtle seems to have won today.”

The family had just finished meeting the 40-pound albino Burmese python named Daisy that was looped around Kris Friedenberger, a volunteer with Friends of Scales Reptile Rescue.

After waiting years for the stalled project to enter Phase 3 of the development, aldermen urged Joe Klein with SMN Development to move the project along more quickly.

The St. Charles City Council has granted seven construction extensions for the

project, which would develop the west bank of the Fox River bordered by Illinois, First and Main streets in downtown St. Charles. SMN Development owns the former Manor Restaurant building site.

In 2008, the city approved plans for the proposed building to show a four-story structure with restaurant use on the first floor and office spaces on the upper floors. Klein also said part of the building would be rented as apartments. Aldermen, acting as Planning and Development Committee members Monday, did not take any action on the

First Ward Alderman Ronald Silkaitis said with no financing set up and with several extensions granted, he’s not sure the project will move along fast enough.

“We’ve given you five years,” Silkaitis said. “Sometimes it takes a new developer to get the project going.”

Klein said a new developer would likely face the same obstacles SMN Development has faced, which are largely due to the economy.

“I think it comes to a point where we say, how much longer can we keep this going?” said 5th Ward Alderwoman

Turner told Klein that he would like to see the financial information and market studies completed “in a reasonable amount of time,” but the committee did not take any action.

Klein seemed optimistic that that would be accomplished.

“We want the construction of a building that’s consistent with the marketplace,” Klein said. “It’s got to be a building that’s viable in today’s marketplace. … The economy’s fragile, the demand is still slight, though it’s getting better. With careful planning, this building can be built.”

D-304 backs 1 percent levy of $79.9M

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In a split 6-1 vote Monday, the Geneva School District 304 Board approved a resolution for a 1 percent tax levy increase for next year.

Board member Mike McCormick cast the lone “no” vote, saying he preferred a zero percent levy and that the district should rely on cash reserves to carry over any shortfall.

The total amount requested for the 2013 levy is nearly $79.9 million, $650,000 less than if the board requested the 1.7 percent maximum that it can legally request.

The amount is based on the consumer price index.

Taxing bodies in Illinois make their levy requests to the county based on what they need and the equalized assessed value of property within the district. Final action will be taken in December.

The 1 percent levy recommendation would increase property taxes on a house with a fair market value at $315,000 by $305, officials said.

A zero percent levy request would have brought in $79.2 million and cost the same homeowner an additional $252, officials said, but would have brought in $1.3 million less, officials said.

The board majority was not willing to risk a shortfall

on a zero percent levy.

“We are not taking everything that we could, we are taking what we need,” board member Kelly Nowak said of the 1 percent levy.

“Reserves are there when we need them,” McCormick said. “If not now, when? ...

There’s more foreclosures doing down my block every week. Taxes are still going up, but not as hard. Let’s tighten our belts.”

About 50 people in the audience applauded McCormick’s comments.

But other board members opted for the 1 percent levy, cautioning that the district does not know the potential cost of all-day kindergarten, a pension shift or other cuts in state aid.

After graduating from college, Phyllis taught elementary school music in Alfred, N.Y., Streator District 45, Eagle School and Otter-Creek Hyatt Schools.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Streator, where she was choir director for 33 years and was a soprano soloist.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, the Choralaires, Phi Beta National Music Fraternity and the LaSalle County Retired Teachers, and was an Illinois Life Member of Retired Teachers, and the Engle Lane Theater, and served on the Streator High School Class of 1942 reunion committee and the Streator Country Club.

Klein said he doesn’t want to build a structure that’s going to sit empty, so in order for the project to move forward, he said he would need to test the market with a commercial broker to make sure the proposed plans are viable.

“I would love to give you a time frame, but I don’t know that I can,” he said.

Santa kicks off countdown to festival

alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Marguerite Ledone has a new activity in mind for the Holiday in the Grove festival, set for next month in Sugar Grove.

“I am hoping for snow,” said Ledone, vice president of the event’s committee. “I love snow. I don’t want a blizzard.

But if it snows, we’ll have a snowman contest.”

There was no chance of such an event Saturday, but a festive holiday theme was in place nonetheless at the Sugar Grove Community House.

Santa Claus arrived via fire truck, and he helped with the official lighting of the event’s new tree outside of the building at the official kickoff.

The Santa sighting might be too early for some, but the event is less than a month away, and organizers want to drum up interest and get the word out that volunteers and sponsors are needed.

The event drew a small group, and it offered Holiday in the Grove organizers an opportunity to talk about the event.

Holiday in the Grove is set for Dec. 7 at several sites in Sugar Grove.

The signature event is Breakfast with Santa, which features three serving times starting at 8, 9 and 10 a.m. at the Sugar Grove Community House, 141 Main St. The building will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a

All three were designed by Geneva High School in Eric Hatzel’s marketing class and will be put to the test in a burger challenge from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Tom and Eddie’s, 1042 Commons Drive, Geneva.

Hatzel’s class was divided into three groups of 10 students. Each was charged not only to design a new burger, but also to build an ad campaign to market and adver-

tise it.

“The winning burger – the one that sells the most – that group does receive a catered lunch and they will get their burger on the Tom and Eddie’s menu for the next 15 days,” Hatzel said.

Eric Krupa, a 16-year-old junior in the marketing class, is in the group that designed the Maxwell.

“We’ve been working on it about two to three weeks,” Krupa said. “It was hard to design a burger because we had to take something that was classic and spice it up and add something extra to make it different – but still great.”

They started with an abstract of the burger and a list of ingredients from Tom and Eddie’s to choose from, he said.

Krupa said he had not personally tasted the Maxwell because that task went to other members of his group.

“They went to Tom and Eddie’s to do a taste-test and tweak it, but it did not need to be tweaked,” Krupa said.

“It was good, and they were satisfied with it.”

Hatzel outlined the three burgers and what makes them special: • The Maxwell – a burger with maximum taste that is well done – is a beef patty on

a pretzel roll, with cheddar cheese, bacon, caramelized onions and chipotle ranch sauce for $8.49.

• The Crabby Patty is a beef patty with a gourmet roll, lettuce, pineapple, pickles and chipotle mayonnaise for $6.99.

• The Cali Green is a beef patty on a gourmet roll with lettuce and tomato, cilantro, goat cheese and a piece of fried avocado on top for $7.49.

Hatzel said Tom and Eddie’s approached him with the idea about a year ago. The school will receive 10 percent from sales of the students’ burgers to support its programs.

Number of cheery events planned during December As I write this month’s column, it is a fabulous fall day. The air is crisp, the sun is shining bright and not a cloud can be seen in the azure blue sky.

Therefore, it hardly seems like the right time to write about a month, December, which could be dreary. Luckily, even though it takes place in December, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk and House Tour are anything but dreary. In fact, they are both downright cheery.

In the next few weeks, garlands and trees will frame our downtown.

More than 4,000 lights and hundreds of handmade ornaments will be put on the 50-foot tree. Santa’s Geneva home will be placed on the corner of James and Third streets, prepped and ready for the jolly old elf. We thank the Geneva Public Works elves for all their assistance in bringing festive cheer to the city.

The Christmas Walk on Dec. 6 is not only a wonderful tradition, but also is Geneva’s start of the season.

Our evening begins with Santa Lucia and her attendants arriving. As they pass out Swedish Pepparkokor cookies, the familiar welcome song for Santa can be heard among the crowd.

The horse-drawn carriage rounds the corner and out jumps St. Nick. Guided by police escort (a thank you to the GPD), Santa makes his way to the stage and – with the mayor – lights the great tree on the courthouse lawn.

It is officially the holidays!

Continue your evening as you stroll and visit the shops and restaurants.

Finally, security retainers are convenient for both the attorney and the client because the billing process becomes more efficient and less hostile.

The attorney does not need to contact the client for every billable action (i.e. drafting pleadings and motions, court time, etc.), and the client doesn’t feel badgered by the attorney whenever an action occurs in the client’s case.

Many people wonder why attorneys use retainers.

Abraham Lincoln, per usual, reportedly said it best, by noting that if a lawyer takes a retainer from his client, the client knows that he has a lawyer and the lawyer knows he has a client.

The retainer is more than a contract between the client and the attorney – it is a commitment.

The client commits to hiring the attorney to perform legal work, and the attorney commits time and expertise to the client.

Although Illinois recognizes three types of retainers, the most commonly used is the security retainer.

The security retainer is a set amount the client gives to an attorney for services not yet performed.

The security retainer is not the property of the attorney, but is instead the property of the client.

The attorney must deposit the security retainer funds into a client trust account.

The client trust account is an account separate from the attorney’s personal or business accounts to prevent the mingling of the attorney’s monies and the client’s monies.

Furthermore, the attorney has a fiduciary duty to safeguard the funds held in the client trust account.

The attorney may apply the client’s funds to the attorney’s billings as services are completed and in accordance with the parties’ legal services agreement.

Any unearned funds must be refunded to the client at the conclusion of the case.

Also, the client has the right to discharge the attorney at any time, and the

All those jellyfish are trying to tell the world something BLOOMBERG NEWS Enormous aggregations of jellyfish have been wreaking havoc from shore to shore – clogging water intake valves on seaside power plants, destroying fish farms, crowding fishing nets and, yes, stinging people (sometimes fatally).

It’s nothing personal.

Jellyfish, lacking brains, do not wish us harm. They’re merely going about their lives as they have for more than half a billion years, swimming, eating and reproducing, lately in mind-boggling numbers.

If anyone is to blame for recent destructive jellyfish “blooms,” as their regional population explosions are called, it is not them, but us.

That’s because jellyfish can tolerate waters that are warm

and polluted – conditions that human activity promotes.

And as people have fished predators and competitors from their midst, jellyfish reign.

One question is whether we are witnessing an irreversible jellyfish takeover of the seas or just a natural waxing of the jellyfish population that will eventually wane.

Scientists don’t know.

But finding the answer is crucial to keeping the oceans safe for every sort of undersea life.

One reason for the mystery is that jellyfish, lacking skeletons or shells, leave little trace in the geologic record.

Another is that they have not been studied much; fishery biologists have long ignored jellyfish as a small nuisance.

One recent study of the

existing scientific data found “no robust evidence for a global increase in jellyfish.”

The researchers noted that populations oscillate in 20year cycles, and an expansion that began during the 1990s is only making it seem as if jellyfish are taking over.

Another study, which looked at not only recorded data but also anecdotal reports from experienced fishermen, found that jellyfish populations have increased beyond what natural cycles can explain.

Either way, it’s clear that – at least in individual ecosystems – poor human stewardship of coastal waters has been giving jellyfish an edge.

Consider, for example, the Black Sea, a repository for the sewage and agricultural runoff of 22 countries, where one species of comb jellyfish

began taking over in 1982.

At one point, the comb jellyfish achieved a mass of more than 1 billion tons – more than 10 times the weight of all the fish caught in the world each year. The population began to recede only after a different species of comb jellyfish arrived, via ballast water, and began eating the first kind.

In the Sea of Japan, there have been six blooms of gigantic Nomura jellyfish since 2002 – something that happened just three times in the 20th century. In Antarctica, melting sea ice is helping jellyfish thrive. In the Bering Sea, it’s overfishing. And so on.

What can be done to keep jellyfish in check? Not a whole lot. South Korean robots that can chop up thou-

sands of them an hour may be able to protect power plants, but even a single local population can include hundreds of millions of jellyfish, so the robots won’t make a huge difference. Nor can we eat our way out of the problem, as only a handful of species are palatable to humans.

The ways to deal with this excess of jellyfish are more indirect.

More data about how jellyfish populations wax and wane, and move about, might make it possible for scientists to predict when coastal regions can expect problems.

The other response is to do all that stuff we should already be doing anyway – stop polluting, overfishing and emitting so many of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

Piron impressed with Lake Forest

By JAY SCHWAB and DENNIS D. JACOBS Shaw Media Both of the teams that have defeated the Lake Forest football team this season are still alive in the state’s largest playoff classes.

Stevenson (Class 8A) and Lake Zurich (Class 7A) are the two opponents so far that have managed to knock off the Scouts, reinforcing the praise Batavia coach Dennis Piron heaped on the Bulldogs’ quarterfinal foe.

“A great, classic playoff program,” Piron said of Lake Forest after Batavia’s 48-13 win against Rolling Meadows on Saturday night. “Extremely well-coached. They play in an incredible league [the North Suburban]. They kind of play up, if you will, against 7A and 8A teams like Stevenson and Lake Zurich. They are battle-tested.”

Lake Forest (9-2) lost at Lake Zurich, 21-10, in Week 5, and to Stevenson, 20-6, in the final week of the regular season.

The Scouts have defeated Warren (31-19) and Chicago Hubbard (41-6) in the first

two rounds of the 6A playoffs. Lake Forest will visit Batavia at 1 p.m. Saturday in a 6A quarterfinal. The winner will play either Rockford Boylan or Prairie Ridge in a state semifinal.

Batavia and Lake Forest tangled in a second-round, 6A playoff game in 2011 – also at Bulldog Stadium – with Batavia winning that one, 31-17.

Eagles off to Seneca: Aurora Christian might be a seeding underdog for its 3A quarterfinal Saturday at Seneca but the Eagles have plenty of cause for optimism.

Not only did the Eagles play in a considerably more difficult conference than Seneca, but the Fighting Irish closed the regular season with a 54-6 loss to a Manteno team that finished the season 5-5. Seneca’s other loss came against Wilmington, which was upset in the first round of the 3A playoffs by an Oregon team that Aurora Christian beat soundly Saturday.

If the Eagles can defeat Seneca, they would be home for the state semifinal round against either Winnebago

Tough way to go out: Kaneland quarterback Drew David enjoyed a memorable three-year run as the Knights’ starter.

About the only regret for the Knights – David was not able to finish his junior or senior seasons healthy, most recently being knocked out of Saturday’s second-round playoff loss at Joliet Catholic with a second quarter rib injury.

The Knights were a combined 31-4 during David’s three seasons running the show. Knights coach Tom Fedderly saluted David’s career.

“The three years with him, I just can’t tell you, I’ve put everything on Drew,”

Fedderly said. “It all runs through him. The three years that he had were just special.

“He’s going to go down as one of the best that we’ve had here at the school, and we’ve had a lot of good ones.”

Not satisfied: Geneva bounced back from a 4-5 season in 2012 to return to the playoffs this fall, but junior receiver Pace Temple said the Vikings’ first-round loss in the Class 7A playoffs will drive the Vikings to greater achievements next year.

Geneva fell to St. Patrick, 31-23, in the first round.

The Vikings project to be a much more seasoned team next year than they were when this year started, with quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and Temple among the marquee returners.

“That Monday [after the game], a bunch of us were in the weightroom just getting ready [for next year],” Temple said. “The wound was still fresh, and that’s just motivation for next year. …

Our goal is not to make the playoffs, it’s to get past that first round, get to the state championship – do all we can to not lose.”

Saints happy to be healthy: St. Charles East’s summer program was disrupted by the absence of the team’s top returning players because of various injuries.

As the preseason begins, though, Saints coach Pat Woods is delighted to have everyone available, including returning starting guards Dom Adduci (labrum surgery) and Cole Gentry

(stress fracture in back).

“They’re all cleared,” Woods said. “Dom has looked really good in open gym. It’s crazy because he took six months off but somehow when he [returned], he looked better than he did last year, which is encouraging.”

Gentry said being away from basketball for a prolonged period heightened his zeal to play.

“I didn’t really know how much it meant to me until I couldn’t play,” Gentry said.

“I knew I loved basketball but it really shows you how much you love it when you can’t play it. I’m really appreciative that I can play again now.”

New sheriff in town: The only new coach in the area this season is Pete Froedden at Wheaton Academy.

Froedden said part of the Warriors’ preseason focus

will involve accepting his philosophy on shot selection.

Some players might not have as much offensive freedom as they’ve had in the past, Froedden said.

“I like scoring the ball fast if we have the ability to,” Froedden said. “But at the same time, scoring fast doesn’t mean taking dumb shots.”

Francis’ team should have a strong Tri-Cities flavor this season.

Senior forward Kilian Brown, of Geneva, and senior forward Adam Hart, a St. Charles North transfer, could team to give the Spartans a strong frontcourt.

Brown was a key reserve for last year’s sectional championship Spartans team.

During the month of October, he quarterbacked the team to a 4-0 record, amassing 846 passing yards (211.5 yards per game), 11 passing touchdowns, 103 rushing yards, and 2 rushing touchdowns. Senior Yonkovich has been MVP for the last 3 years. He finished his high school golf career with several fantastic performances.

St. Charles North boys basketball coach Tom Poulin is no stranger to tryouts.

This year’s tryouts, though, might challenge the eighth-year coach more than some past seasons.

Preseason tryouts began across the area for boys basketball teams Monday, with regular practice to begin later this week.

Tom Poulin With so many open spots after heavy graduation losses for North, Poulin said plenty of varsity newcomers will merit a long look this week.

“We have to do our due diligence these three days and see who forms the best team,” Poulin said.

Although North graduated four starters from last year’s squad, there are plenty of reinforcements on the way. That potentially could include Division I football athletes Chase Gianacakos and Garrett Johnson, both of whom bring plenty of size to the table but did not play basketball last year.

“We’ve got some strength and size inside that I don’t think people are accounting for when they think about what we’ve got returning,” Poulin said.

Poulin is high on North’s intangibles based on what he observed during the offseason. On paper, he realizes North will be considered an underdog in the Upstate Eight Conference River this season compared with teams such as defending champion Larkin, St. Charles East and Geneva.

Saturday night, the Bulldogs rolled over Rolling Meadows in a Class 6A second round game, 48-13.

Batavia senior quarterback Micah Coffey threw for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran for another score.

“I’m really proud of our linemen tonight,” Coffey said.

“They gave me enough time and then I’ve got tall guys to go get the ball.”

One of those guys is 6-foot1 senior Michael Moffatt, who made perhaps the play of the night for the Bulldogs in the second quarter. Batavia was leading 14-6 and facing a 4thand-8 at the Rolling Meadows 27 when Coffey avoided a blitz and lofted a pass into the end zone for Moffat. The Mustang defender appeared to be in a better position to make a play on the ball, but Moffatt went

up to take it away from him.

“I just jumped up,” Moffatt said. “I knew I could go vertical over him and then I just tipped it back to myself with one hand and luckily it came right down as I was falling, right onto my body, so it was pretty cool.”

That gave Batavia a 21-6 halftime lead. The Bulldogs (10-1) stretched their lead to 35-13 in the third quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by Anthony Scaccia, who had another impressive performance with 125 yards rushing on 21 carries.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot a little bit in the first half, but I thought the second half we came out and really dominated the ball,” Coffey said.

Coffey said the offense knew it was important to make every possession count because the Mustangs also had some offensive weapons.

“They’ve got some skill guys over there,” he said. “I’ve got all the faith in the world in our defense, but obviously knowing they’ve got those

Some Bulldogs play both ways as well, including Moffatt, who came up with an interception early in the fourth

quarter when Rolling Meadows (7-4) was driving and threatening to make things interesting.

“On the slant, I passed it over to the safety, and right away from the quarterback’s release I could tell it was go-

ing to be high, so I stayed back a little bit and it went right to me,” Moffatt said.

The Bulldogs also got a first-half sideline interception from Rourke Mullins, who somehow managed to stay in bounds while taking the ball away from the intended receiver. Batavia also came up with some key fourth-down stops to thwart the Mustangs’ high-powered spread offense.

“That’s an offense, you watch them on film and the things they do, I will tell you that’s a scary, scary team to defend,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “I was so proud of our defensive plan. … We were very, very difficult to read in terms of what our adjustments were and what we were doing and in the end, I think it made a little confusion for them.”

The victory sends Batavia into a quarterfinal matchup with Lake Forest (9-2), a 27-7 Friday victor over De La Salle. It will be a rematch of a second-round game won by the Bulldogs two years ago, 31-17.

Knights lose quarterback, O-lineman in first half of loss

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Dealing with Michael Ivlow and Joliet Catholic was going to be difficult enough.

Doing so with multiple key injuries made Saturday night’s showdown between Kaneland and Joliet Catholic a one-sided affair, as the Hilltoppers battered the Knights, 45-8, in an IHSA Class 5A second-round football playoff game at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Already playing without starting receiver Brandon Bishop – who was injured in the first round against Hampshire – the Knights lost three-year starting quarterback Drew David and offensive lineman/linebacker Sam Bower during the

course of the first half.

That doesn’t even take into account season-ending ACL injuries to star running back Jesse Balluff and starting lineman Zach Thielk earlier this season.

“Unfortunately, when it rained it poured with the injuries,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “With Bishop not being able to play, and then Drew and Bower.

“Hats off to [Joliet Catholic], they did a really nice job, but I can’t say enough about my seniors. We love them, and I can’t say enough about them.”

With David in the game for the first quarter-plus, the Knights moved the ball into Joliet Catholic territory on three occasions. The results: a turnover on downs, a punt and a missed field goal.

Ivlow, meanwhile, had four rushing touchdowns in the first half as JCA led, 28-0, at the break. That included TD runs of 80 and 67 yards.

He ran for 218 of his 222 yards in the first half while teammate Nick Borgra rushed for 141 yards on the night as the Hilltoppers clicked in their patented double-wing offense.

“It’s funny because we’re more of a running team, and we seem to have the big plays in our running game,” JCA coach Dan Sharp said.

Senior Ty Carlson came on at quarterback to replace David, who Fedderly said sustained a rib injury while taking a hit after a run early in the second quarter.

Carlson completed 10 of 18 passes and led the Knights on a drive that ended with a

3-yard Nate Dyer touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but by then, the running clock was in effect.

“I feel like turf is kind of a nightmare for us,” Dyer said.

“That tends to be the playing field that we get hurt on. But that’s what we strived for all year, get the second man in and keep playing hard.”

Dyer said the Knights knew they faced a whopping challenge in a Joliet Catholic team that only has lost once this season, a one-point defeat to 7A playoff team St. Patrick.

“We expected them to be a tough team. We expected them to make plays,” Dyer said. “You get sealed off the edge. We made some plays, they made more plays.”

The loss bounces the Knights (9-2) from the 5A

playoffs in the second round for the second straight season after consecutive state semifinal berths the two years before.

Sharp was proud of his team’s play but felt badly about Kaneland going down without its leader for most of the night.

“He is one of the better athletes we’ve seen this year, just watching them on film and seeing them live last week,” Sharp said of David. “It was a shame that happened but that definitely I think took the wind out of their sails a little bit, losing a player of that caliber.”

Joliet Catholic didn’t complete a pass all night but out-rushed Kaneland, 391-88.

The Hilltopers move on to a heavyweight quarterfinal next week at Montini.

Thorpe said coaches discussed avoiding point after attempts before the game because of high winds. But after the failed PAT, the Comets turned the game over to the defense, hoping for one final stop.

Covalt hit Steven Ladd for an 11-yard pass, getting the Wolves into Marmion territory. A Covalt keeper and a Brent Anderson run got the ball to the 28-yard line, setting up the game-winning touchdown pass.

Chris Eschweiler added the point-after to give the Wolves the lead back with less than a minute to play.

CRYSTAL LAKE – With less than two minutes dividing Prairie Ridge from a berth in the Class 6A state quarterfinals or the end of its season, Brett Covalt hadn’t yet completed a pass.

The Wolves had stuck closely to their triple option offense, which had staked them to a two-touchdown lead. But now, needing to cover 60 yards in less than two minutes, Prairie Ridge had to suddenly shift over to the two-minute offense it works on at the end of nearly all practices.

That scheme includes a slant-go-route that the Wolves keep in their pocket, knowing it’s there if need be. With 59.2 seconds left, Covalt got the call to put the play into action and lofted a 28-yard pass to a back-pedaling Danny Meikel, whose touchdown catch gave Prairie Ridge a dramatic 21-20

win over Marmion on Saturday afternoon.

“It was just do-or-die,” Meikel said. “We were just thinking of our community, our teammates. We just wanted to win the game. We weren’t ready to go home yet.”

Prairie Ridge never trailed until the final minutes when Marmion (8-3) took a 20-14 lead on Brock Krueger’s 4-yard quarterback keeper. The Cadets, who had only 32 yards of offense in the first half, staged a fourth quarter comeback, tying the game on Krueger’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Josh Meyers with 7:25 remaining. After struggling for much of the day to get rolling, Marmion was two minutes from moving on.

“Give credit to their defense – they were really teeing off on us,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “But what a credit to our kids. [The comeback] wasn’t me – it wasn’t a speech. It was just tremendous class and

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE PEORIA – Persistence keeps paying dividends for the Kaneland girls cross country team.

Following a trend that’s been the norm over the past few state series, the Knights turned in a strong performance at the Class 2A state meet at Detweiller Park on Saturday, finishing fifth as a team in Class 2A. “They seem to do that on a yearly basis now – they save their best races for their last,” Kaneland coach Doug Ecker said.

Kaneland totaled a 246 team score to tie Chatham Glenwood, but defeated the Titans by virtue of a faster sixth runner. It’s the program’s highest finish since the three-class system began in 2007. The 1989 team took fourth in Class A. Yorkville captured the team title with a 104.

The Knights’ Brianna Bower capped a consistent sophomore season to lead the Knights with a 37th-place run in 18:33. The effort earned 24 points in the team score. Aislinn Lodwig, who has only been training for the past five weeks because of an injury, was 54th in 18:59. Defending 2A individual champ Victoria Clinton was 76th in 19:12.

Competing in the 3A meet, Geneva finished eighth with a team score of 264. Champion Glenbard West placed four runners in the top 21 to win with a 75.

Geneva used a strong middle pack to stick around the front of the 25-team field. Kathryn Adelman (38th, 17:54), Brooke Nusser (47th, 18:02) and Emma McSpadden (60th, 18:10) St. Charles North placed 17th behind a personal-record effort from senior Ashley England, whose 11th-place run of 17:20 was a nine-second PR. “Ashley exceeded expectations. She did exactly what she wanted to do,” North Stars coach Shari Hayes said. “Very, very happy. We thought that was the time she needed to get all-state [top 25] and she did

even better than that.”

St. Charles East junior Torree Scull also earned all-state accolades, finishing 18th in 17:25.

Boys cross country state meet: At Peoria, Wheaton Academy finished 10th in the Class 2A meet, in which Yorkville followed up its girls’ team title with a boys championship.

Brandon Lach (46th, 15:45) and Jacob Robleski (63rd, 15:53) led the Warriors.

Kaneland placed 22nd behind Nathaniel Kucera (67th, 15:54) and Andrew Leak (114th, 16:17).

Marmion’s Brady Bobbitt was the top area finisher in the 3A meet, placing 76th in 15:28.

Mitch Zabka of Batavia wasn’t far behind, running 82nd in 15:31 to spark the Bulldogs’ first team state appearance in school history. Batavia finished 23rd among 26 teams, with Ryan Wieties (124th, 15:47)) and Patrick Redmond (140th, 15:53) following Zabka.

In the 1A meet, Mooseheart junior Wal Khat placed fourth in 15:09, 22 seconds behind champion Jon Davis of the Fithian Oakwood co-op. Aurora Christian freshman Tanner Chada finished 28th in 15:46.

Geneva girls volleyball falls in supersectional: Geneva girls volleyball players quickly discovered something in cramming for Saturday’s Class 4A St. Charles East Supersectional against New Trier.

The Trevians are teeming with NCAA Division I recruits.

Two middles, two defensive specialists and a setter all have committed to play major college volleyball. A right-side is a Northwestern softball recruit, too.

Largely ignoring their opponents’ pedigree, the Vikings challenged New Trier throughout the night, but the Trevians ultimately prevailed with a 2519, 25-21 sweep that gave the program a chance to build on last season’s runner-up finish.

“They’re an amazing team,” Geneva senior middle Taylor Marmitt said. “Their setter’s

so good. All their hitters. Their middles are good, their outsides were smart. Everything about them. They played their game tonight.”

Geneva (29-10) sensed it could reach this postseason round – and ideally beyond – for some time, even though the Vikings were a mere 48 hours removed from capturing the program’s first sectional title.

Advancing is supposed to become more treacherous by the round, but the St. Francis girls volleyball team has encountered the opposite, taking its dominance to new levels Saturday with a 25-10, 25-15 thumping of Chicago Christian in the IHSA Class 3A Joliet Catholic Supersectional.

The defending 3A state champion Spartans advance to Friday’s 6 p.m. state semifinal against Breese Central at Redbird Arena.

The Spartans (37-3) were pushed to three games in both of their matchups at regionals but have prevailed in straight sets each outing since, taking out Joliet Catholic and host Coal City in sectionals before beating Chicago Christian for the third time this season.

Aurora Christian football moves on: During a convincing first-round playoff win over IC Catholic Prep, Aurora Christian football coach Don Beebe said two-way starter Brandon Walgren played one of the best games – if not the best game – in Eagles history.

Walgren had quite the encore performance Saturday night as Aurora Christian moved on to the IHSA Class 3A quarterfinals with a 49-20, running-clock blowout of visiting Oregon. The senior wideout/safety caught a pair of touchdown passes from Austin Bray and also connected on a touchdown pass of his own – a 30-yard strike to freshman Zach Bosek – to help blow open the game, as Aurora Christian scored 28 second quarter points.

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – It may have gotten lost in Sunday’s commotion surrounding Jay Cutler, but coach Marc Trestman made it clear Monday that the Bears’ running game was disappointing.

Matt Forte had 33 yards on 17 carries in the 21-19 loss to the Lions.

“We didn’t block the run very well. We didn’t do a good enough job on the run. Even with 17 carries by Matt, we didn’t get enough productivity out of Matt in the running game,” Trestman said. “We didn’t block the run well. We have to get better at that. We were very disappointed in our ability not to balance it out.”

That was supposed to be what would work for the Bears – running the ball against a Lions defense that entered Sunday allowing 4.7 yards a carry.

The Bears tried to get Forte to the outside, running behind or around left tackle Jermon Bushrod. The Lions were one of the worst teams in the league defending such runs, allowing between five and six yards a carry on rushes off left tackle or left end.

On four carries characterized as “left end,” Forte had 7 yards. He rushed 9 yards for a touchdown off left end, but that was called back because of Matt Slauson’s holding penalty. On his three carries off left tackle, Forte gained 4 yards.

“Part of it was blocking.

We had some missed assignments on some key plays, we really did. We had one toss play you saw Matt, so disappointed, just didn’t pick up his foot. He had a big gain there,” Trestman said. “We had a couple of sweeps where we blocked it incorrectly, and that was disappointing.

“We knew we weren’t going to hit every one, but we had a chance to have three or maybe four explosive runs in the game, big runs, and we got the touchdown run called back.”

The inability to balance the run with the pass, especially with a hobbled quarterback, helped cost the Bears in an area they should have had an advantage.

“We know, standing here as an offensive staff member and as a head coach, we didn’t play well enough up front in the running game giving Matt the opportunities,” Trestman said. “We called his number enough –17 times – and we didn’t get enough out of it.”

Quick hits: Among the several missed opportunities in Sunday’s loss, Trestman said someone missed a block on a return that would have sprung Devin Hester for a big gain. … Trestman agreed with Cutler that there was a window to get the ball to Martellus Bennett on his late firsthalf interception before Ndamukong Suh got in the way. “I thought the same thing. Suh came on a twist. He came out of nowhere. He reached out his arm and tipped the ball,” he said. “[Cutler] wasn’t trying to throw it through people.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Keeping fish in an aquarium is said to be one of the top hobbies in the United States today. Some enthusiasts search for antique-looking aquariums that fit with room styles from the past. It was not a hobby for an average householder until the 1830s, when the Wardian case was created as a simple container for live fish. By the opening of the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 in London, aquariums were wonders suitable for a home, and two years later the London Zoo built a large aquarium open to the public.

The United States had enough people interested in raising fish indoors to form an “aquarist society” by 1843, and fish became part of a full-blown fad by the 1860s. Of course, that meant there were things to collect - an aquarium and equipment - like pumps and filters, rocks, small figures and scenery for the fish tank.

Decorators planned rooms with planters and aquariums in the prevailing styles of the time, from Victorian to Mission to Art Deco to modern. Old tanks made of wrought iron and glass, tanks bordered by heavy Mission-style oak planks, glass bowls held in wicker stands, and Art Deco designs using plastic instead of glass are sometimes found at antiques sales. And the small glass fishbowl for guppies or goldfish so popular in the 1950s still is available. Recently, a Deco aquarium made of wrought iron vines and leaves, and a clear, slightly green glass bowl was sold for $805. It had a light at the top and a holder for a large potted plant at the bottom. It’s probably the focal point of a room today.

Q: My great aunt gave my mother a pretty porcelain bowl decorated with hand-painted acorns and leaves. It is marked “Elite L France” on the bottom.

I’m now 90 years old, so the bowl must be very old. Does it have any value?

A: The mark “Elite L [for Limoges] France” was used by Bawo & Dotter, an importer established in New York City in the mid 1860s. Bawo & Dotter founded a decorating studio in Fischern, Bohemia (presently Rybare, Czech Republic), in 1883 and was manufacturing porcelain in Limoges, France, by 1893. Bawo & Dotter’s “Elite” china was exhibited at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The company closed in about 1914. Your bowl, probably made to hold nuts, is worth about $50-$100. *** Q: We own two paintings left to us by a friend who was a guard at the World War II POW camp set up at Westover Field in Chicopee, Mass. The paintings are signed “K. Skrobeck, 1945 POW.” We can’t find any information about the artist, but we would like to know if the paintings have any value.

A: Many World War II POWs tried painting while they were prisoners in the United States. It kept them busy and relieved boredom. Some even discovered they were talented.

Biographical information about any one of these “artists” is hard to find. But POW paintings are part of the history of the war, and they can sell for hundreds of dollars if they’re in good condition, if the quality of the artwork is decent (no matter what the style) and if you can

became Kohn-Mundus, so your chairs were probably made before 1914. KohnMundus merged with Thonet in 1922.

The idea came from Bill’s wife, Diane. That fall, Diane handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill determined that no such agency existed, Diane told Bill that he should start one.

James “Whitey’’ Bulger, the longtime boss of the Winter Hill Gang, the Irish mob that ruled the Boston underworld for decades, is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in federal court.

In August, a jury found Bulger guilty on 31 of 32 counts – including murder, extortion, money laundering, drug dealing and weapons possession.

The 83-year-old Bulger, who had spent 16 years on the run before being captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011, won’t be doing any more running. He will almost certainly spend the rest of his life sitting quietly behind bars.

One film about Bulger’s life of crime is already in production. Producer/director Barry Levinson, who brought us “Diner,” “The Natural,” “Good Morning Vietnam” and “Rain Man,” is working on “Black Mass,” a film based on the book of the same name that chronicles Bulger’s relationship with John Connolly, a disgraced FBI agent and fellow South Boston crony.

Reports have been swirling that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are also planning a film about Bulger, with Damon earmarked for the leading role.

When Whitey’s story does hit the theaters, it won’t be the first film about Irish gangsters. In fact, it won’t even be the first time Bulger is portrayed on screen. In Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winner “The Departed,” Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon starred in “The Departed,” a film about an undercover state police officer who infiltrates the Boston Irish mob, while staying a step ahead of the mobsters’ mole in the state police. has the role of the vile Frank Costello, a character loosely based on Bulger.

There’s something in the collective Irish psyche that often harbors a defiance for authority, and thus an admiration for those who defy authority. A byproduct of this is that Irish rogues have been glorified in song and, in some occasions, film.

Hopefully that sentiment will not creep into the Bulger films, as it did in “The General,” a movie that portrays the late Dublin mobster, Martin Cahill, as a colorful, misunderstood, you-gotta-love-him boyo. The truth is that Cahill was a repulsive lowlife who preyed on his own people.

That being said, let’s move on to the point of this exercise: the Irish gangster on the big screen. While the preponderance of American organized crime movies have focused on the Mafia, there are a fair number of very good films about the world of the Irish-American gangster.

Here’s one man’s top 10:

1. Miller’s Crossing (1990) – Gabriel Byrne plays the role

of Tom Regan, the top adviser to Prohibition-era crime boss Leo O’Bannion (Albert Finney), who gets caught in the middle of a gang war between O’Bannion’s Irish crew and the up-and-coming Italian mob.

2. The Town (2010) – Ben Affleck portrays Doug McCray, a Charlestown bank robber who yearns to change his life and who falls into a romantic relationship with a bank manager he encountered on a heist, all while trying to elude the FBI. 3. Kill the Irishman (2011) – Ray Stevenson gives a riveting performance in his portrayal of real-life Cleveland mobster Danny Greene, the labor leader turned gangster who survived a bevy of assassination attempts.

4. The Departed (2006) – Director Martin Scorsese won Best Picture for this film about an undercover state police officer (Leonardo DiCaprio as Billy Costigan) who infiltrates the Boston Irish mob, all the while staying a step ahead of the mobsters’ mole in the state police (Matt

Tom Hanks portrays Michael Sullivan, a Depression-era hit man for Irish crime boss John Rooney (Paul Newman), whose life takes a life-altering twist when his young son witnesses him commit a killing.

7. The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) – Robert Mitchum portrays Quincy-based Eddie Coyle, a small-time hoodlum who decides to hand up his Boston crime associates to the feds in order to avoid a prison sentence.

8. Gangs of New York (2002) – Set in 1863 Manhattan, Martin Scorsese directed this film about Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio), who arrives in the Irish slum of Five Points to avenge the killing of his father.

9. Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) – Fresh out of prison, Rocky Sullivan (James Cagney) returns to his Hell’s Kitchen home and rekindles his friendship with his boyhood pal, Father Jerry Connolly (Pat O’Brien). As Sullivan grows friendly with the boys in the neighborhood, Father Connolly frets that the young men will emulate their hero and follow Rocky into a life of crime.

10. Monument Ave. (1998) – Denis Leary portrays a small-time Charlestown wiseguy, Bobby O’Grady, who must struggle with his neighborhood’s renowned code of silence after his cousin is murdered by the brutal boss of Bobby’s crew (Colm Meaney as Jackie O’Hara).

Is credit rating only reason for not marrying One person can make Dear Abby: I have been with my partner, “Harold,” for 11 years.

After gay marriage passed here in Minnesota, Harold told me he didn’t want to marry me because of my credit rating. I find this insulting and humiliating. Worse, the day marriage equality passed, we were with some friends of mine, and he bluntly told them, “I don’t want to marry him because of his FICO score!” It was very embarrassing.

I have also learned that Harold has been telling anyone he knows some of my private information.

What can I say to him to get him to stop revealing things about me to people we don’t know well?

Should I end the relationship?

I think in some way if I do, that I’ll be better off without him. But after 11 years and all that he’s done for me, I’d feel really sad. Dear Abby: Our son recently came to us and confessed that three years ago he’d had an affair with a married woman who had two children. He ran into her recently, and she told him she now has three children, and the most recent one – age 3 – is his daughter. She’s still married to the man she cheated on, and our son says he’s still in love with her.

We told our son that because she says the child is his doesn’t necessarily mean it is, and if her husband didn’t question the pregnancy, it’s possible the child is her husband’s. We advised our son to get a paternity test.

Our son is now so angry with

us for suggesting it that he won’t speak to us. He said if we can’t support him and the woman he loves, we should stay out of his life. He said she plans to leave her husband. (It has been three weeks and she’s still there.) I think she was just trying to get our son’s attention.

Was our suggestion unreasonable? We don’t support this kind of behavior or their lack of morals.

The woman’s husband is the only dad this little girl knows, and he thinks she’s his child. Our son needs to know if this is his daughter. What a mess! Dear Reader: Cardio machines offer good aerobic workouts that burn calories and fat. They simulate everything from cycling to walking and running, rowing, skiing and stair climbing. I have an elliptical trainer in my basement.

It allows me to exercise every day, regardless of the weather. (And here in Boston, the weather is not always very pleasant.)

The price of a cardio machine can vary greatly. How much you pay will depend upon whether a machine is motorized or programmable, and whether it measures heart rate, calories burned, time elapsed, and so forth.

Here are some popular types of equipment – along with what to look for in each machine: • An elliptical trainer provides a circular up-and-down motion for a nearly impact-free workout. Levers with handgrips to work the upper body are available on many models. Look for comfortable handlebars and nonslip pedals with curved ridges.

• A cross-country ski machine lets you exercise arms and legs simultaneously. The sliding motion

• A rowing machine works the back, arms and legs simultaneously. Some people find this machine hard on the back. When purchasing one, consider pulley models instead of piston models.

• Stair-steppers provide a low-impact workout that approximates climbing stairs. Some models have levers with handgrips to work arms, too. The motion can be hard on the knees. Look for machines that provide independent foot action and are equipped with handrails and large stair platforms.

• A stationary bicycle takes no training and is easy to use.

Even if you never learned how to ride a bike, you can easily use an exercise bike. You don’t have to worry about keeping the bike balanced. However, an exercise bike can be uncomfortable for long stints. Look for a model with a comfortable, adjustable seat and toe clips.

• A treadmill enables you to

walk or run indoors. Opt for a motorized treadmill with a strong motor, a belt that’s long and wide enough for your stride, a sturdy frame with front side rails for safety, and an emergency stop device. You should be able to adjust the speed and grade.

Be sure to try out any equipment you are considering purchasing before buying it. Some people just don’t like certain machines. And if you don’t like using it, you won’t. That’s money down the drain.

Finally, keep in mind that you do not need any equipment to embark on an effective exercise routine. It’s easier and a lot less expensive to start out walking or jogging. But if you want to exercise every day, and live in a place where the weather can be unfriendly, exercise equipment is the way to go. If you can do it, position the equipment near a window, radio, music player or TV – that can help make the exercise time more enjoyable.

decisions on dress code Dr. Wallace: Our high school does not have a dress code. Basically, we can wear anything we want to school. The only glitch is that the principal can send you home to change clothes if it is decided that a student’s clothes are “disruptive to the educational process.”

I think that it is unfair that one person can decide if your clothes are a disruption. Why is it that the principal is the one to make this decision? Wouldn’t it be better if a committee of students and teachers decided what was and wasn’t appropriate school attire?

Our principal is very strict and he finds a lot of clothing (especially girls’ clothing) disruptive. Do you favor a dress code? – Nameless, Boston, Mass.

Dear Nameless: The principal is responsible for seeing that educational goals are achieved in a smooth, orderly manner. The principal should be the one to determine if a student’s attire is acceptable. He or she is getting paid to make these kinds of decisions.

The great majority of high school students are dressed properly when at school, which makes it unnecessary to introduce a mandatory dress code.

P.S. It shouldn’t take a committee to decide if the way a student is dressed would disrupt the school. Many times, a committee can’t agree on anything!

Dr. Wallace: I think you’re confused when it comes to drinking alcohol. You said that beer and whiskey are equally addictive and intoxicating. Obviously, you have not consumed a lot of alcohol in your life. I can drink a can of beer and have no ill

Please learn about the effects of alcohol whenever you plan to discuss it in the future.

I should know, I’m a serious beer drinker – and very proud of it! – Pete, the Greek, Tarpon Springs, Fla. Dear Pete: Maybe you were drinking when you read what I wrote.

It’s not that complicated, but you completely missed the point. It’s the amount of alcohol you consume that matters, not the kind of alcohol. The alcohol in beer, whiskey, wine and every other drink is the same; only the amount is different. All alcohol is addictive and intoxicating.

Now comes the part I want you to clearly understand. Beer is usually 5 percent alcohol, while whiskey (80 proof) is 40 percent alcohol. This means that one 12-ounce glass of beer contains 0.6 ounces of alcohol, the same as 1.5 ounces of 80-proof whiskey. Just do the math.

Simply stated, one can of beer has the same alcoholic content as one mixed drink containing a shot of whiskey.

P.S. Being a serious beer drinker is nothing to be proud of.

If you have not been playing the game long and would like to check that you have basic declarer play down pat, buy “Declarer Play at Bridge: A Quizbook” by Barbara Seagram and David Bird (Master Point Press).

The book starts with suit contracts. There are four pages of basic instruction, then 40 quiz questions in which the reader is shown the dummy and declarer’s hand (“single dummy,” as it is called) and asked to choose a line of play. Each answer also includes a useful point to remember.

Next, there are six pages about no-trump contracts, followed by 20 single-dummy problems.

There are fewer examples because no-trump contracts are much less complicated than suit contracts.

In this example from the book, how should South play in six hearts? West leads the spade jack.

Yes, South’s jump to slam is a tad optimistic. But the play’s the thing.

South has two losers: one diamond and one club. He has only 11 winners: two spades, six hearts, two diamonds and one club. He must establish dummy’s club suit. But if it is splitting 4-2, that will require three dummy entries. Luckily, there are three: the heart king, heart 10 and diamond king.

After taking the first trick, cash the club ace and play another club. Suppose East wins and shifts to the diamond queen.

South wins with his ace, cashes the heart ace, plays a heart to dummy’s 10, ruffs a club, leads a heart to the king, ruffs another club, plays a diamond to dummy’s king, and happily discards a minor-suit loser on the club jack, which is now a winner.
