D-302 board reveals details of latest offer SUGAR GROVE – Members of the Kaneland Education Association put on a show of support at Monday night’s Kaneland School District 302 Board meeting.

On that same night, school board members issued a news release providing details of the latest contract offer to the organization representing the district’s teachers.

The board’s news release stated the district’s most recent offer would add about $3 million of additional money to the teachers’ salary schedule during the next three years, which would translate to more than a 16 percent increase in salary during the life of

On Monday night, clad in black shirts with white lettering featuring the message “KEA United,” a long line of District 302 teachers introduced themselves, one by one, at the school board meeting. The teachers spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Lori Shroka, president of the KEA, started the public comment period with a short update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the school district and the KEA, saying, “Kaneland teachers are committed to providing a high-quality education to the children of the Kaneland school district, despite disagreements.”

Also at Monday’s meeting, board members discussed an item about school improvement planning for the 2015-16 school year, which addressed a summary of findings from exit interviews. The KEA’s chief negotiator, Susan Acksel,

Kaneland High School community on alert after threat

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland High School community is on alert this week, according to an email communication sent to families in the district. The email, signed by Superintendent Todd Leden, said officials learned of a “potential threat to school security” for Tuesday – Nov. 10.

Also on Tuesday, the district endured a “soft closing” situation that the Kane County Sheriff’s Office stated was unrelated to the threat.

Police stated the soft closing instead was caused by a power outage, which took place because of a traffic crash nearby.

signed by Leden, thanked the Kaneland community “for their efforts, understanding and professionalism.”

“The circumstances that developed over the last two days have been especially challenging at our high school,” the email stated.

“Our administration, teachers, support staff and students have conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and

are a credit to our school and community – well done.”

The nature of the threat was not described in any of the communications. In the Tuesday evening email, Leden stated that all threats that come to the attention of the district “are taken seriously and are fully investigated.” He also stated, “Many

Festival becomes tradition for local family The weather is turning cold, and the leaves are almost gone. It’s hard to believe it’s mid-November already.

And while some dread the winter months ahead, I personally look forward to them for one reason – the holidays!

The final months of the year always seem to come and go so quickly. With the hustle and bustle of the Thanksgiving feast and time spent with family and friends followed by weeks of planning for Christmas, people sometimes forget to slow down and take it all in.

Here in Batavia, the Celebration of Lights Festival gives families a prime opportunity to take in the magic of the season. The festival has been a staple in town for more than 20 years. It’s the perfect example of a true community event – complete with caroling, a tree-lighting ceremony and visits with Santa.

For many local families, the festival has been a tradition for years. But last

It didn’t take long for the family to decide the festival would become an annual tradition.

“The first year did not disappoint,” Ann said. “We thought it would be much more fun to meet Santa at the festival rather than heading to a local mall. The atmosphere is what drew us in, and it was such an enjoyable and fun experience!”

The festival offers a little something for everyone. The evening will kick off with a new Holiday Craft Market from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 29 inside the Batavia Government

Center. More than 25 vendors will sell a variety of gift items and offer raffle prizes, and the Batavia High School Art Boosters will be offering complimentary gift wrapping.

The Batavia Community Band will perform at 5:30 p.m. that day, followed by a singa-long with host Craig Foltos and a tree-lighting ceremony with Mayor Jeff Schielke.

Families can take a hay ride through Christmas Tree Lane, enjoy free roasted chestnuts and stop at the Gustafson Research Center to hear some holiday stories. But, of course, the thing many kids look forward to most is seeing Santa.

“It was so much fun last year to see the anticipation on my boys’ faces as they waited for Santa to arrive,” Ann said.

“They can’t wait to see Santa again at this year’s festival.”

Many veterans appreciate recognition for service

A

s a veteran of the Korean conflict, Geneva 4th Ward Alderman Ron Singer said he will attend an 11 a.m. Veterans Day observance today at State and Third streets in Geneva, which will include an honor guard and 21-gun salute, and is hosted by American Legion Post 75.

Singer, 83, said just knowing communities are offering so much recognition and honor to veterans makes him happy.

“It means a great deal to me,” Singer said. “It warms my heart when I see the way in which the veterans are being respected and the attention they’re being given. It makes me feel very, very good.”

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, which marked the end of hostilities toward the end of World War I at 11 a.m.

Nov. 11, 1918, according to the Veterans Administration website, www.va.gov. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation, changing the name to Veterans Day to honor all veterans for their service and sacrifice.

World War II Navy veteran Joe Greenberg, 89, of St. Charles said he also appreciates all the observances and honors.

“I did the Honor Flight in September,” Greenberg said.

“I’ve gone to more than a couple grade schools where they picked a veteran and honored them and did a program. …

As part of Celebrating Veterans Through Art, the St. Charles Arts Council, American Legion Post 342, AMVETS Post 503, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036 and P-ARTS/ East High School are sponsoring and presenting an art gallery in partnership with St. Charles School District 303.

The gallery uses art, litera-

ture, video and other displays to celebrate veterans and tell their stories. These include videos of veteran interviews from St. Charles East High School Class of 2017 students, as part of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.

Guy Bellaver, features a winding ribbon of photos of veterans in service, paired with their current photos and short biographies of where they served.

“I didn’t know if I’d get five vets or 10 or 50. I ended up getting 85 veterans,” Bellaver said. “You are sort of overwhelmed when you see the

names.”

Jake Wyatt, 68, of St. Charles, a veteran of Vietnam and Desert Storm, said he was so impressed with Bellaver’s project, he would like it to be a new tradition. Wyatt is a member of the Legion and VFW. “There’s probably close to 3,000 veterans in St. Charles,” Wyatt said. “This is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Another display is a sculpture called “Surfacing,” which was installed on the Baker Community Center front lawn at 101 S. 2nd St. in St. Charles, by sculptor Rita Grendze of Geneva.

Grendze said she used dome security mirrors to represent bubbles of thought coming to the surface.

“They are bubbles coming out of the ground, and you see the words reflected back,”

ST. CHARLES – As the state budget impasse continues, the St. Charles City Council is urging Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly to immediately release funds to local governments.

Illinois has been operating without a budget since July 1.

As a result, the state is withholding more than $150 million in revenue owed to municipal governments, Mayor Ray Rogina said last week.

Aldermen passed a resolution Nov. 2 urging state leaders to release the nongeneral fund revenues. The resolution was requested by the Illinois Municipal League.

St. Charles is waiting to receive about $250,000 in motor fuel tax, Rogina said, and Tri-Com Central Dispatch also is waiting on funds.

Residents on the 700 and 800 block of Roberts Lane between Morton and Danforth drives in Batavia who were not already home when the incident began were not able to go to their houses until the ambulance left the scene.

Some of those residents and their neighbors early Tuesday evening stood at the southwest and southeast corners of Roberts Lane and Danforth Drive to observe the police activity outside the home on the 800 block of Danforth Drive.

Batavia resident Amy Nichols stopped walking her dog to observe the police activity. She said she received an automated phone message from the Batavia Police Department on Tuesday telling her to stay inside because of the incident.

Nichols also received updates on the Batavia High School lockdown directly from her children who attend the high school.

Gillerlain said a soft lockdown is when no one is allowed in or out of a school building, because of an incident outside of the school. A hard lockdown is when there is an intruder in the school, she said.

“It’s a sad, tragic situation,” Nichols said. “I think the Batavia Police Department and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office did a good job of controlling the scene.”

Batavia resident Eric Klein said he had just arrived outside Alice Gustafson Elementary School by bicycle Tuesday afternoon when a PA announcement was made that children would start being released to their parents. Klein said he and other parents had to show an ID to school staff before their children were retrieved.

“They had runners going in and bringing the kids,” Klein said.

Klein said he was impressed by the response and organization of the teachers and administrators.

“It made me feel safe,” he said.

Jeff Jones, who lives in the 200 block of Roberts Lane, said emergency vehicles used his street as a staging area before going farther down the street to about the 600 block. “[The] Batavia Police Department is aware that this

BATAVIA – One man was taken to a hospital Tuesday evening after a daylong barricade incident in Batavia, according to a Batavia police news release.

Police were first dispatched at 11:48 a.m. Tuesday to a home in the 800 block of Roberts Lane in Batavia for a report of a despondent male subject who reportedly was threatening to harm himself, the release stated.

Officers made brief contact with the man, and he refused to leave the home, according to the release.

Batavia police, with the assistance of the Kane County Regional SWAT team, formed a security perimeter around the home, based on information that the man had access to a number of firearms, the release stated.

The perimeter remained in place until an ambulance, parked outside of a home in the 800 block of Roberts Lane in Batavia, was seen leaving the block at about 8:48 p.m. Tuesday.

At about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, several police officers were seen entering the home. A stretcher was brought inside the home, and shortly after, someone was placed inside the back of the ambulance at the scene.

The man was located inside the home at about 8:30 p.m.

protective custody without incident before he was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation, the release stated.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing and there are no criminal charges pending at this time, according to the release.

Batavia police at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday advised Batavia School District 101 officials to put two of its west side schools – Batavia High School and Alice Gustafson Elementary School – on a soft lockdown because of the incident. The lockdown was not lifted until about 4:15 p.m., the release stated.

After a number of voice and telephone communications with the man, contact was broken by the man at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the release.

At about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, a Kane County Sheriff’s Office official amplified his voice and called to the man by his first name. The sheriff’s office would continue to call out to the man several times over a period of more than two hours.

“We are concerned about you and worried about your well-being,” an official said over a loudspeaker at about 7 p.m. “Please exit the front door of the residence. We are not going to leave until we are sure you are OK.” After numerous attempts to re-initiate contact with the man, law enforcement officials decided to enter the residence in an attempt to reestablish contact with the man.

Kane County Forest Preserve Commission nixes higher levy

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Despite an earlier vote narrowly favoring a tax levy increase, the Kane County Forest Preserve Commission on Tuesday kept it flat.

The president of the commission, Mike Kenyon, who only votes in the event of a tie, advocated for the proposed $5,422,523 general fund levy.

He – and others – asserted the $75,000 bump would capture new construction.

Preliminary new construction figures for the county are estimated at $119 million, according to a memo dated Sept.

4. “[We are] merely asking the new homeowners to pay

their fair share,” Kenyon said.

Commissioner Kurt Kojzarek said the new homeowners still will pay taxes under a flat levy. With more people paying into the pool, he said, the burden lessens for everyone else.

Commissioner T.R. Smith said a levy increase would be perceived by voters in a certain way. They are, he said, “dead set” against a tax increase.

When asked what would happen if the higher levy were denied, Forest Preserve Executive Director Monica Meyers said it already is a challenge to maintain existing capital and there would be projects the district wouldn’t accomplish.

“Those monies would be

lost,” Meyers said.

Commissioners – who in committee recommended approval of the higher levy in a 12-11 vote – denied the increase, 13-8, with two absent.

Those in favor of the $5.4 million levy were Deborah Allan, Maggie Auger, Becky Gillam, John Hoscheit, Phil Lewis, John Martin, Doug Scheflow and Barb Wojnicki.

Theresa Barreiro, Cristina Castro, Drew Frasz, Joseph Haimann, Don Ishmael, Kojzarek, Bill Lenert, Myrna Molina, Brian Pollock, Monica Silva, Smith, Susan Starrett and Maria Vazquez voted against it.

The commission unanimously approved a general fund levy of $5,347,523 to stay within a levy freeze.

During a second period for public comment, one teacher, Sarah Linden, spoke on the exit interviews, saying the process should be done by more than one person. She said “We are losing a lot of good teachers,” and added teachers at Kaneland “are not in the highest level of economic status, and that’s a

big deal.”

Also speaking during public comment was Elburn resident Dan Herring, who said he was “for the teachers,” but also said he was speaking “as a private citizen” who was “being taxed to death.” Herring said the district should cut down on administration and the cost of studies. He also said, unlike those involved in education “a lot of private

citizens have not had raises for five or six years. … And we cannot retire early.” He added most residents’ retirement plans were “not what you guys get.”

“We can’t keep paying these taxes,” Herring said.

The truth matters, Mr. Carson THE WASHINGTON POST Washington let out a collective “you’re kidding me” early this week, following a weekend of complaints from Ben Carson, arguably the latest front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

Aggrieved at questions about the accuracy of claims he has made about his past, Carson lashed out at the media on Sunday.

“I have always said that I expect to be vetted,” he said on “Meet the Press.”

“But being vetted and what is going on with me, ‘You said this 30 years ago, you said this 20 years ago, this didn’t exist’ – you know, I just, I have not seen that with anyone else.”

The Post’s James Hohmann, among others, pointed out that Mr. Carson must not have been paying much attention to the past several decades of U.S. politics. Ask anyone from Gary Hart to Hillary Clinton about media scrutiny of his or her biographical claims. Yet there is more to Carson’s complaint than the amount of scrutiny he has seen.

Implied is the notion that these questions are illegitimate, as well as unusual.

This also is wrong.

Carson’s suspect reminiscences, Clinton’s email server and a range of other stories that have emerged about the dealings and assurances of various candidates speak to broader elements of character and trustworthiness that are very much in the public interest to explore.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Clinton’s email setup required the public simply to trust that she and her team of lawyers turned over every document relevant to her official duties at the State Department. Even if they did so in good faith, the decision to put the public – and herself – in such a position was a mistake that makes one wonder about her respect for public records and transparency, not to mention her judgment.

Carson’s false claim that he was offered a full scholarship to West Point, among other statements, makes one wonder about his honesty and self-regard. His history is already compelling. He pulled himself up to become a world-renowned surgeon.

Even so, he apparently felt the need to claim more glory. Moreover, his defense – that “I was told that someone like me, they could get a scholarship to West Point” – comes at the expense of the institution and its rigorous admissions policies. For someone who bases his campaign on not being a typical politician, this sounds a lot like the sort of embellishment we’ve seen from other preening public figures.

The whole episode is notable not for what is different about Carson and his treatment – but about what is the same. When you are running for president, it generally has mattered whether you tell the truth.

We hope it still does.

New-look Cougars will still keep fans top priority

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After celebrating 25 years of baseball this past season, the Kane County Cougars will have a much different look moving forward.

The Cougars announced Tuesday a rebranding of the organization that includes a new logo, colors and uniforms that the Cougars will don for the 2016 season and beyond.

General manager Curtis Haug, along with a committee that included team graphic designer Emmet Broderick and Studio Simon consultant Dan Simon, the Cougars came up with a new look that the organization is excited about.

A snarling, green-eyed cougar is at the heart of the new logo, which is shaped like a badge and incorporates a baseball bat and trees, which honor the Midwest League club’s partnership with the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

The new jerseys feature a home, away and lime green alternate jersey that Haug expects the team to wear between eight and 10 times at home in 2016. The white, home

jerseys feature the word “Cougars” across the front, with all two different navy caps. One features the new Cougar logo inside the letter “C”, while the other is the letter “C” on its own.

The gray, road jerseys feature the words “Kane County” across the front, while the lime green alternates have the same Cougars’ lettering as the home jerseys. The road caps are much the same as the home ones, aside from the bill of the cap being gray and a change of color with the “C”.

All three jerseys have the logo of the club’s Major League affiliate, the Arizona Diamondbacks, on the right sleeve and the new Cougars logo on the left sleeve. It’s the

first major logo change since the Cougars moved to Geneva from Wausau, Wisconsin after the 1990 season. Green, black and gold were the prominent colors since.

“I think the new look brings a new identity with a ton of new possibilities,” Haug said.

It’s an exciting time for this organization, and we believe that it’s going to have a nice impact on the fans and community and we’re really excited about the next 25 years moving forward.”

What does it mean to have your last run happen the way it did?

It’s honestly just amazing.

To set a PR in my last ever run ... was just perfect. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet that it’s my final run. I’m sure there will be tears, but right now it’s excitement.

You’ve been to state all four seasons at Geneva. Why was this year different than the rest?

Well, one thing that never changes is how many good – no, great – athletes are here.

It’s the best of the best. But I think those first three seasons were all learning experiences in a different way each time.

This was definitely the best any of the state meets has gone for not just me, but us as a whole.

To finish where you did as a team must have made the day even more special, huh?

I’m so proud of each and every one of us. We knew we could do well coming here and had to give it everything we had.

We’re all so happy that the hard work that we put in this season paid off.

“We wanted to make sure to celebrate the 25th anniversary season,” Haug said.

“Like I said, this has been something that we’ve been discussing since mid-season of this past year, but we didn’t want to do it before now. We feel that this change gives us a fresh, new look heading into the next 25 years.”

Geneva girls cross country runner and Syracuse commit McKenzie Altmayer made sure the final run of her high school career was a good one.

Altmayer finished seventh at Saturday’s 3A state meet, helping the Vikings finish ninth as a team. Altmayer, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey about the excitement of the day and more. Here’s an edited transcript:

With the new look will come a new look for famed mascot Ozzie T. Cougar. The name will stay the same, but Haug assured that the fans will be “pleased” at the makeover come April 7, when the Cougars host Clinton in the 2016 season opener.

Fans ‘getting into it more and more’

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Steel skated before a crowd of 823 fans at Fox Valley Ice Arena during Friday’s 3-2 overtime loss to visiting Muskegon (Michigan), their first of seven scheduled home games this month.

Before Friday, the team had played at home just twice in three weeks, and is eager to chart how its following has developed after the United States Hockey League franchise relocated from Bensenville before the season.

“The fans are getting into it more and more, and I think each game has been a better environment to play in,” said forward Marcel Godbout, the Steel’s captain. “I think the guys enjoy playing here more.”

Weekend night games certainly augment the atmo-

sphere, and with a vast majority of their 30 home contests falling under that category, the Steel certainly can attest.

Last month’s six-game road trip to Wisconsin and Michigan featured a novelty for several players – a game at Muskegon that began at 9:30 a.m. A school day promotion warranted the early puck drop, which ultimately energized players despite the wake-up call.

“Those games are always fun,” Godbout said. “You get the kids there that like the game. They’re a little bit loud at times, but it’s fun there, too.”

The Steel’s Kirk Road corridor neighbor, the Kane County Cougars, play several matinée baseball games each season to cater to the school and day camp set.

Although he remained tuned in to the action on the ice, something told Steel de-

fenseman Billy Sweezey the Michigan youngsters weren’t completely versed in the finer points of hockey.

“I think they were just screaming just to scream,” Sweezey said.

Putting on the foil: Godbout, a native of Center Line, Michigan – a northern suburb of Detroit – boasts arguably the most hockey-appropriate hometown on the Steel roster.

Fellow forward Jake Jaremko of quick-reacting Nowthen, Minnesota, ranks second.

In the category of best hometown tied to fictitious hockey icons, however, there is no contest. Sweezey hails from Hanson, Massachusetts, which may not have produced the Hanson brothers of “Slap Shot” fame, but still has turned Sweezey’s acquaintances’ heads now and then.

“I’ve gotten that a couple times,” Sweezey grinned.

As with the rest of his contemporaries, Sweezey, 19, was born decades after “Slap Shot” hit U.S. theaters Feb. 25, 1977.

Still, he and teammates find the film about minor league hockey eminently quotable and relevant.

“Oh, yeah,” Sweezey said.

“Everyone loves it.”

Et cetera: Several Steel players are set to sign letters of intent to NCAA Division I schools as part of today’s National Signing Day for the early period. ... Watching “Family Feud” reruns recently emerged as the Steel’s preferred pre-practice pastime.

Citing a busy agenda, coach Dan Muse has not participated in any sittings or surveys.

The Batavia Bulldogs Football team just wrapped up a 5th consecutive title and senior Derek Nutley has burst on the scene as one of the top defensive players in the UEC River.

Derek has recently broken the Batavia Football school sack record with 14 sacks this season. He also has another 6 tackles for loss and has hit or hurried QB’s an amazing 28 times.

Brynn Warrick is a junior at South Elgin High School and a big contributor to the Girls Golf team. She qualified for the IHSA State Meet and finished tied for 71st in the state. Brynn has played on the Varsity Girls Golf team since her freshmen year and has improved every year. South Elgin High looks forward to Brynn repeating as a State Qualifier again next school year.

Lexi DeWaard has been one of the key performers for the Burlington Central Volleyball team. She presently has 71 serving aces and 196 service points both of which lead the team. Lexi has also contributed with 26 spike kills, 28 blocks, 146 digs and 616 assists which also leads the team.

Megan Furtney has been a key contributor to the St. Charles North Girls Golf team this fall. Megan finished 5th in the IHSA state golf tournament and also compiled a 37.5 9-hole average and a 73.7 18-hole average.

Will Marshall helped the Kaneland High School Boys Golf team finish the year strong with some great individual scores down the stretch. In the Northern Big 12 Tournament he tied for 6th place with a score of 81. In the IHSA regional he tied for 6th with a score of 78. In the sectional he tied for 6th with a score of 78. At State he placed 4th with scores of 75 & 72.

The Fox Valley Gators Youth Football and Cheerleading League has been serving North Aurora, Aurora, Batavia, Yorkville, Oswego and other surrounding communities for the past nine years.

A 501c3, non-profit organization, the league is an affiliate of the Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheerleading Program. It is part of the Mid-American Conference and we serves boys and girls ages 5 to 15 in its program.

The mission of Pop Warner is to enable young people to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured environment.

The Gators teach fundamental values and skills and knowledge that young people will use throughout their lives.

The Gators are a volun-

ed at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, with both teams placing seventh in its division.

On Sunday, the Gators competed at the Pop Warner Mid-American Regional Competition at Northern Illinois’ Convocation Center in DeKalb, vying to become one of the top two teams to advance to nationals. The Jr. Pee Wee team narrowly missed qualifying for nationals in a competitive field, but showed strong effort.

The Junior Midget team, comprised of 20 girls ages 1013, took second to advance to nationals, which are set for Dec. 7 in Orlando.

The team has been working through various fundraisers to help pay its way to Disney, and still is looking for sponsorships and donations from area businesses. Those interested in assisting can email Lynn Andrae at Lynn.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff have created iPS cells to study what goes wrong in certain diseases, and what treatments would be effective. Take Parkinson’s disease, for example. The cells that die in a person with Parkinson’s disease lie deep in the brain. You can’t just reach in and study them.

But you can take a skin cell from a patient with Parkinson’s disease and turn it into an iPS cell. You can transform that iPS cell into the type of brain cell that dies in Parkinson’s disease.

Then you can see what medicines keep that cell from dying. This is being done today, for many diseases.

Of course, I’ve made this remarkable new technique sound simpler and freer of potential complications than it really is.

Certain ways of creating iPS cells possibly could turn the cells cancerous. But new discoveries are reducing or eliminating that risk.

Also, the technique still is quite inefficient and cumbersome, but new discoveries are making it simpler. Still, it will be some time before this new type of stem cell therapy affects medical practice in a major way.

Perhaps this remarkable breakthrough will achieve its full potential in helping us to understand and cure diseases.

If so, it will show again how society benefits when we support the work of curious and talented scientists who seek to understand the basic processes of life.

Dr. Wallace: Our mother died three years ago, and my younger brother and I live with our dad and our new stepmother. She is very nice, and although we still miss our mother, we are a happy family.

They panicked when they learned about his family and condemned him for the failings of others, which is inaccurate and unfair.

As a former high school administrator, I can attest model teen citizens are not limited to only “good” families. Young people with extraordinary character often emerge from difficult family situations. Just because they have siblings who get into trouble with the law does not mean they will also.

The better your parents get to know this young man, the more accurately they will be able to evaluate his character.

Plan some activities to make this possible, such as dinner or dessert for the four of you at a nice restaurant after attending a church activity together.

Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I said, theoretically, embryonic stem cells could be used to replace cells that are killed by disease – heart cells killed in a heart attack, for example, or brain cells killed by Alzheimer’s disease. If you needed stem cells, what you ideally would want were your own embryonic stem cells.

The dilemma: Your own stem cells existed only briefly, long ago, and you couldn’t turn back the clock. That is, until a research breakthrough in 2007 showed you could.

As we discussed yesterday, embryonic stem cells and all the specialized cells have exactly the same genes within them. However, cells in the eye and stomach, for example, are so very different because different genes are turned on in each type of cell. A Japanese research team decided to see if a unique group of genes was turned on in embryonic stem cells. There were.

Then they asked an audacious question: What would happen if you placed into a fully specialized cell – like a cell in the skin – the activated genes seen in embryonic stem cells? The answer was so remarkable it was honored with the Nobel Prize. The skin cell turned into a cell (called an iPS cell) very much like that person’s long-lost embryonic stem cells. You could turn back the clock.

Since this discovery, scientists have been experimenting with using iPS cells to cure disease in animals.

For example, iPS cells created from skin cells in mice have been transformed into specialized healthy blood and nerve cells – curing the mice of the equivalent of sickle cell anemia and Parkinson’s disease.

Bridge defenders have to decide whether to be active – positively trying to win tricks – or passive – sitting back and waiting for declarer to lose tricks.

If they adopt the correct approach on any given deal, they will be happy.

In this deal, East has the decision to make. South is in four spades. West leads the heart three, and East wins with his king. How should he plan the defense?

Some Wests would have jumped to four hearts, arguing that with 10 trumps, get to the 10-trick level. But with no singleton, this seems too much to me. Note, though, that his threeheart raise was pre-emptive. With a good hand, he would have cue-bid two spades.

If East judges it is right to defend passively, he should continue with the heart ace. Here, though, South would ruff in the dummy, draw two rounds of trumps ending in his hand, and take the club finesse. It would lose, but he could claim four spades, one diamond, four clubs and one heart ruff.

East should realize that dummy’s club suit is threatening to provide declarer with a host of tricks. East must shift immediately to a low diamond.

Here, West will put in his nine to force out dummy’s queen. South takes his top trumps and tries the club finesse.

East wins and plays another diamond.

Declarer wins in the dummy and starts to run the clubs, but West ruffs in and leads a diamond to East’s jack. The defenders happily get one trick in each suit.
