Chicago Pet Show offers barks, but no bite

Club President Alice Blayney said some birds were adopted during the event, which saw “tremendous”

crowds Saturday.

“This is a great opportunity to get our shelter out,” she said, noting it is in Villa Park.

Although the club has existed for more than 80 years, this is the first year it has had a building for the shelter, Blayney said.

About 80 birds need homes, board member Janice Davis said. Blayney said the shelter often gets birds when their owners have died and when kids go to college and can’t take the pets with them and their parents don’t want to care for them. Similarly, both Baby and Shrek were surrendered by their owners, Laura Wesseln of Adopt a Bull said, noting Shrek’s owner was being deployed overseas.

“Both of them are great dogs,” she said.

Participating in the Chicago Pet Show helps the group with its suburban outreach, she said. She noted it also gives the group a chance to educate people about bulldogs, which can be adopted from them and not bought from pet stores.

Adopt a Bull ensures the dogs are in optimal shape before adoption, Wesseln said, noting the organization invests in medical costs.

Fundraiser benefits Hill’s Country Store owner

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – As a longtime friend of Hill’s Country Store owner Pat Hill, Sugar Grove resident Tina Romas said she knows how much Hill gives to other people.

So when Romas heard Hill had been diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer (Hill also has cancer in her liver and bones), Romas knew she wanted to do something to help. On Saturday, Romas held the Pink Out for Pat benefit at the Kaneville Community Center. Proceeds

from the show, which featured Premier Designs jewelry, will benefit Hill.

“We’ll give back to her what she does for everyone else,” Romas said. “She has a good heart. She will do anything for anybody.”

Among those attending the benefit was Ellie Strang, 18, of Kaneville, who graduated from Kaneland High School with Hill’s son, Tyler. Strang also took note of Pat Hill’s helping nature.

“She is always helping everybody else,” Strang said.

Along with being owner of

Hill’s Country Store, Hill also is Kaneville village president.

Romas said Hill stopped in during Saturday’s benefit.

“She is in good spirits,” Romas said.

Longtime Kaneville resident Penny Miller, who is a longtime customer of Hill’s Country Store, also attended the benefit to support Hill. She said Hill would have done the same.

“If she hears somebody is in need, she’s part of it,” Miller said. “She’s just a very giving person.”

ing of support from the community for Hill. The Pink for Purple Walk for Pat will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 23. The walk will begin and end at Hill’s Country Store in Kaneville, nicknamed the “Purple Store.” A raffle will be held as part of the event. In addition, the Give Back to Pat Benefit will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Fishermen’s Inn, 43W901 Main Street Road in Blackberry Township, near Elburn.

Geneva redevelopment brings dispute over land cash

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously recommended approval Monday to a proposal by Shodeen Inc. to redevelop the northeast corner of James and Seventh streets with six new townhouses.

The plan involves tearing down a single-family home at 627 James St., an accessory garage at 15 S. Seventh St., a commercial office building at 15 S. Seventh St. and a second single-family home at 621

James St. The project required amendments to the city’s Downtown Station-Area Master Plan to change its land use and to change the zoning from business to multifamily residential.

The City Council will take final action.

Shodeen representative David Patzelt said the townhouses would be priced from $350,000 to $450,000 each.

Aldermen also approved credits that reduced Shodeen’s land cash payment to

the Geneva School District 304 to $1,276.74 instead of $8,119.54, and $18,231.75 instead of $25,274.20 to the Geneva Park District.

The money compensates taxing bodies for the impact of new development, officials said.

But District 304 Coordinator of Business Services Todd Latham said the city’s ordinance has no language to provide a remedy other than to impose the full fee.

“The school district is not being unreasonable,” Latham

said. “We are not asking for less or more, but what the ordinance states. It’s a bad precedent. If you want to give credits, have clear language in your ordinance that we can follow. The park district is in agreement with us.”

Patzelt said the developer and the city agree the developer should pay for the net impact of additional population that is added.

Patzelt said the area had three children in the school district. Redevelopment could produce 13. The school dis-

trict’s position is that the developer should pay for all 13 – the gross amount – not just the 10 additional students, he said.

“The school district suggested that the ordinance did not state that it allows for a credit,” Patzelt said. “But you could also argue that it does not say you can’t have a credit. “ Latham disagreed.

“The people that lost today are the taxpayers and the school district and the park district,” Latham said.

Rockford-based Dyn Rote LLC petitioned for a special use for a drive-thru facility

at Randall Shoppes, which consist of the addresses at 600-660 S. Randall Road in St. Charles. The drive-thru would serve a future Starbucks restaurant on the north end of the shoppes, which began undergoing construction this year during the summer.

Turner and Krieger said they were concerned about

the Starbucks location, which would be at the southeast corner of Randall Road and Prairie Street where traffic backs up.

“I think this is going to be a real problem,” Turner said on Monday. “I’m not in favor of this.”

A traffic study indicated the peak times for the area near the proposed drive-thru

are during the weekend and in the evening, which, is opposite of Starbucks peak customer morning traffic, said Marvin Keys, an attorney who represented the petitioner at the meeting.

The drive-thru proposal will next go before the full St. Charles City Council for a final vote at its Nov. 17 meeting.

COVER STORY ‘A WONDERFUL FEELING TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE CARE’ STC veterans speak about experiences, appreciation, camaraderie

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Bread, doughnuts and drinks were spread on a table Saturday morning at the home of the St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036.

At other tables, the veterans sat, enjoying the breakfast and talking about current events, upcoming activities and any other topic that came up. It’s something they gather to do at 7 a.m. every Saturday at the Veterans Center, at 311 N. Second St. in St. Charles.

Today is Veterans Day, so attendees were discussing their plans for the day. Many said they were planning for a full day, including the St. Charles ceremony this morning at the fire station and the annual concert tonight at St. Charles North High School.

When asked, they also spoke of their experiences in war zones, highlights of their military careers and more.

Bob Pennington, an 89-year-old St. Charles Township resident, said he was pleased to be able to take part in Veterans Day ceremonies each year. Pennington, an Army veteran who served in World War II, said he has noticed “veterans are very much in style today.”

“It certainly is a wonderful feeling to know that people care,” Pennington said.

••• Pennington didn’t glorify his time spent in World War II. He talked of how fortunate he was that he was able to return. He spoke of several instances, in which he was only inches away from serious injury or death. He said he was hospitalized on three separate occasions

Veterans share stories during a meeting Saturday morning at the St. Charles VFW Veterans Center. during his time fighting in Europe, and he said the time in hospitals probably saved his life. He said the man who replaced him during one hospital stay ended up dying.

“The worst thing about being an infantryman is the constant apprehension,” Pennington said. “You are constantly under pressure.”

Ed Gorecki, a 94-year-old St. Charles resident, spoke of his time in World War II. As an Army veteran, he spoke of his time in Europe and receiving the Legion of Honor medal from France.

He said others who helped liberate France would be eligible, and he said he hoped they would explore that. He said his unit saw a lot of action, and “we were constantly being used.” He said he spent most of a three-year period in combat.

Dean Busching, a 90-yearold St. Charles resident, talked of working as a meteorologist in World War II while serving in the Army Air Corps. He served in Asia. When he left the Army, he said he came home and worked for 41 years as a certified public accountant.

He said as a captain, he was designated as a military aide at President Eisenhower’s funeral, which was the highlight of his career. He spoke of a desire to have Pearl Harbor Day recognized as a national holiday. He said it was amazing that “we beat the two greatest professional military machines in the world.”

“All we were was a bunch of farmers and clerks,” Di Liberti said.

Di Liberti, who served in the U.S. Army, said he was a paratrooper, and he still enjoys “jumping out of airplanes.”

Dick Leckbee, who previously was the St. Charles VFW Post’s commander, was in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. He said he spent more than 17 months

in a war zone, and he added during his time there, “I did and saw things I would like to forget.” He said many others feel the same way.

“There are a lot who don’t talk about it,” Leckbee said.

“They let loose whatever they want.”

••• Leckbee works to publicize the weekly veteran gatherings, wanting to make clear veterans are welcome from 7 to 9 a.m. each Saturday at the Veterans Center.

He spent more than three years as the commander and continues to be involved.

There is a medical van that arrives at the location on the second Tuesday of each month, and he said veterans are welcome to have their blood pressure checked or get flu shots or attend to oth-

er medical needs they might have.

Many of those in attendance at the recent breakfast said they stay involved. Pennington said it’s essential younger veterans start joining such groups and embracing the opportunities that are there. Pennington pointed at the men in the room and mentioned many were older. He said he has great respect for the men who are fighting today.

Pennington credited everyone involved, not only soldiers, for their work in World War II. He said women were essential in the work they did while soldiers went off to fight, and he said he felt those who were doing the fighting were “poorly equipped when we went to World War II.” He said the war brought a tremendous loss of life.

“It helped us win the war, but it was a whale of a price to pay,” Pennington said.

But, he said, he understood it was necessary. He said he read and heard students’ essays in a contest, and he said they understand it, too.

“Like the kids said, their lives would be a lot different if we had lost the war,” Pennington said.

BATAVIA – Geneva Body Shop and Geneva Repair Shop owner Pasquale Roppo said he was in need of more space to work on the cars that come to his shop. On Oct. 1, the shop opened in a new, larger location at 901 N. Raddant Road in Batavia, just down the street from its previous location at 110 N. Randall Road in Batavia.

The new shop is 25,000 square feet, more than four times the size of his previous shop, which had been 6,000 square feet, Roppo said. Roppo, who lives in Batavia, said business has been growing since he bought it in 2010. The business once had been in Geneva, and he decided to keep the name.

“We needed a better location to serve all of our customers,” he said. “We had too many cars for the little location we had.”

Roppo, who grew up in Bari, Italy, gained experience by working on European makes, such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. His shop also works on many high-performance cars, Roppo said.

He immigrated to the U.S. in 2003 and became a naturalized citizen last year, he said.

The bigger location will allow those at the business to paint between six to eight cars a day once it becomes fully operational, Roppo said.

Roppo said he added the repair shop to better serve his customers.

“It is very convenient for the customer,” he said.

Family members and friends have come forward with donations, including Liz Carson, a former next-door neighbor of the Heiseys. Carson said her son, Chris, used to play with Tyler Heisey, who was four years older than him.

Carson shared a link to the Heisey fundraiser on Facebook and hopes more people come forward to help him and his family. Tyler Heisey has intermittent explosive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, some hearing loss and shortterm memory loss, Lois Heisey said.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles mother wants to raise $5,000 this month for her son, who was injured in Afghanistan while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Sgt. Tyler Heisey, 24, suffered a traumatic brain injury from an improvised explosive device on Aug. 10, 2012, said his mother, Lois Heisey. Tyler Heisey recently received notice for his mandatory medical retirement starting Jan. 1.

Lois Heisey said her son had wanted to be a Marine since he was 6 years old. He graduated in 2007 from St. Charles East High School one year early and then started boot camp at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County, California, so he could fulfill his dream.

“Thank God he’s alive, that’s all I have to say,” Lois Heisey said. “We’ll support him the best way we can.”

Tyler Heisey will move before the end of the year from Camp Pendleton to a to-be-determined place in Illinois with his wife, Jen, and their three children. He will be without income for about two months until his VA benefits begin, Lois

Shirley Ehlers, age 87, of Woodstock, formerly of the Elburn and St. Charles areas, passed away Sunday morning, November 9, 2014.

She was born on November 11, 1926, in Aurora, IL, the daughter of Henry and Augusta (Nelson) Henderson. She grew up on a dairy farm in rural Elburn and attended local schools. She graduated from Elburn High School with the class of 1944.

Shirley was united in marriage to Philip Johnson on November 6, 1948, in Elburn, IL, and later found love a second time when she married Ewald “Gus” Ehlers.

Shirley made memories everywhere she lived, most of them coming from her years in Elburn and St. Charles, but in recent years, many were made in Woodstock as well.

Shirley spent many years as a smiling face behind the counter at Kane County Bank in both Elburn and Sugar Grove, where she worked as a Teller. Later she worked at Elburn Farm Equipment until her retirement.

Shirley was a member of the Women’s Auxilliary and Quivera Club. Shirley loved traveling over the years and logged many interesting trips throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

When she came home, nothing was more enjoyable than playing Pinnacle and Bridge with friends and family, reading one of her books (her favorite was a good mystery) or watching her favorite movies.

She is survived by two children, Kenneth Philip Johnson and Carol Eileen Betsinger; Three grandchildren, Meghan (Ryan) Dykstra, Hannah Johnson and Anders Johnson; Five great-grandchildren, Zoe, Keightlyn, Max and Emma Dykstra, and Ava Christiansen.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Augusta Henderson on December 13, 1982; her father, Henry Henderson on July 21, 1986; husband, Ewald “Gus” Ehlers on Dec. 4, 2001; and granddaughter,

Ami Christiansen on February 4, 2007.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 7:30 p.m., at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL, on Friday, November 14, 2014. A graveside service will begin at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Blackberry Township Cemetery, Elburn. Family and friends are invited to meet at the cemetery to say their last farewell.

GENEVA – Sheriff Pat Perez got not one but two standing ovations Monday morning as the Kane County Board recognized his years of service.

Perez, who did not seek re-election, will retire Nov. 30.

Sheriff-elect Donald Kramer is expected to be sworn in Dec. 1.

Board member Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, presented Perez with a plaque detailing his accomplishments from his “distinguished” career that spanned more than 20 years.

Perez – who first was elected sheriff in 2006 and again in 2010 – raised accountability in the jail, reduced lawsuits against personnel, established mandatory random drug testing for deputies, spearheaded the August 2008 move of the sheriff’s office and jail and, among other achievements, raised more than $80,000 for charities through an annual car show, Wojnicki said.

“You are well loved,” she said, after Perez received a standing ovation.

Perez thanked the board for the recognition.

“Over the course of eight years, we’ve done a lot of good things together,” he said, noting the biggest accomplishment was making it through the worst economy in their lifetime.

He also thanked his staff, some of whom were in the audience.

“I rely on them,” Perez said. “This is a team effort.”

He received a second standing ovation as he returned to the audience.

In other news, the board adopted the levies for next year, including a frozen property tax levy, and the annual appropriations as detailed in the 2015 draft budget.

A nudge on foreign policy THE WASHINGTON POST Presidents and not Congress should direct foreign policy, and that’s true for President Barack Obama even after the walloping he and his party suffered in the midterm elections.

Nevertheless, the end of the campaign and the change in the leadership of the Senate create opportunities for both the lame duck and the new Congress. They can authorize the war against the Islamic State, give Obama a needed nudge on military aid for Ukraine and weigh in on the endgame of negotiations with Iran.

Obama said at a news conference Wednesday that he would ask Congress for an Authorization for the Use of Military Force for the bombing campaign he launched in Iraq last August and later expanded to Syria. The president previously contended he had legal authority to carry out the war under his constitutional powers and the AUMF laws Congress passed for al-Qaeda in 2001 and Iraq in 2002. With the midterms looming, many in both parties were happy to go along with that stretch of executive authority. But as Obama said following the election, “the world needs to know we are united behind this effort.”

In principle, it shouldn’t be hard to assemble a large bipartisan majority behind the goal of degrading the Islamic State. But the specific terms of the legislation could produce paralyzing dissension. Some will want to include provisions ruling out the use of U.S. ground troops in Syria or Iraq, spelling out goals for new Iraqi or Syrian governments or setting a time limit on the campaign. There also is the question – touched on by Obama at his news

conference – of whether the new authorization should incorporate, revoke or supplement those of a decade ago. In our view, the most workable approach would be to keep the measure simple, allowing broad authority for the new military operations without congressional micromanagement.

Big bipartisan coalitions also can be built in Congress behind legislation providing Ukraine with weapons to deter further Russian aggression and applying more sanctions to Iran in the event it fails to agree to controls on its nuclear program by the end of this month. Only the Senate’s Democratic leadership and heavy White House lobbying has stopped such bills until now. A bipartisan measure approved by the Senate Foreign Relations committee in September, which provided $350 million for antitank weapons, drones and other munitions for Ukraine’s army, should be revived. Obama’s resistance to such aid at a time when Russia is again sending heavy weapons into eastern Ukraine makes no sense.

In the case of Iran, legislators should move more carefully. A U.S.-led coalition may succeed in completing a long-term deal with Iran on its nuclear program by a Nov. 24 deadline; another extension of an interim accord is also possible. Congress should avoid legislating new sanctions unless there is a breakdown in diplomacy.

By the same token, Obama would be unwise to attempt to avoid seeking Congressional approval for a deal, or votes on the lifting of sanctions. If there is to be detente with Iran, it should have – like the war against the Islamic State – broad and explicit political support.

We owe veterans more Today is a day where we will see flags flying, men and women in military uniforms and ceremonies where children put their hands over their hearts as patriotic songs are played.

It’s wonderful to honor our veterans.

For all they have done, they deserve a day to be given accolades.

There were 19.6 million military veterans in the United States as of 2013, according to the Census Bureau. Of those, 9.3 million were 65 years and older, and 1.6 million were younger than 35. In 2013, there were 3.6 million veterans with a service-connected disability – a disability that was a result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service.

Veterans have likely seen images most of us can’t imagine: The horrors of a movie or video game can’t compare to the battlefield many veterans have experienced – and fought on – firsthand.

And they did so because they believed in something bigger than themselves: They believed in their country. They sacrificed for the benefit of others. They understood that a country that cherishes

freedom as an ideal requires that some give up their freedom for the benefit of others.

In many ways, our country fails veterans. Think of how many have had to wait to get service at the nation’s veterans hospitals. Multiple deployments to dangerous, hostile lands can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder or suicide.

There are 30,000 to 32,000 U.S. deaths from suicide a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and – of those – about 20 percent are veterans.

We owe them more.

Saying thank you to a veteran or attending a Veterans Day ceremony to honor them, is a wonderful, heartfelt gesture.

But we cannot stop with that. We must demand our veterans receive the care they deserve for giving their all for their country. We must show our gratitude every day, not just the one day a year set aside for doing so.

As John F. Kennedy once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Cary-Grove ‘relentless’ foe

An impromptu exit interview for a handful of St. Charles North football players ended with this question: How would you advise a defense facing Cary-Grove’s triple-option offense for the first time?

North, the Upstate Eight Conference’s stingiest ‘D’ by points allowed during the regular season (94), yielded 424 rushing yards in a 35-14 home loss to the Trojans in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs.

Now the only other team to hang 30-plus points on North this season – Geneva – visits Cary-Grove in a quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Saturday. Ready for a quick primer, Vikings?

“Just be relentless,” North Stars junior nose tackle Quinn Calcagno said. “I mean, those guys are tough. They’re big.

They’re strong. They’re fast.

But, I mean, the only thing you can do is just pound them and try to break them down early.”

Senior linebacker Brendan McCarthy offered similar and more succinct feedback: “Play fast and play physical and don’t stop going.”

Players and coaches disdain looking forward and don’t always divulge every bit of intellectual property. Still, it’s a safe bet at least some among each team paired with Cary-Grove in the northern half of the 7A bracket briefly pondered the prospect of stopping the unbeaten Trojans’ signature attack when the IHSA unveiled the draw on Oct. 25.

Moments after Geneva withstood a late barrage to defeat Rockton Hononegah, 26-20, last weekend to advance to its first quarterfinal since 2008, Vikings coach Rob Wicinski offered early insight on the triple option. The Vikings, like the North Stars, certainly will place a premium on stopping it during practice.

“That puts some real stress on you,” Wicinski said.

“You’ve got to be really disciplined in gap control. I don’t

know, I’m just happy to be here. We haven’t been [to the quarterfinals] in a long time.

A long time. It feels like 300 years. So I’m happy for the kids. This was a goal we set, to at least get to the quarters and anything after this is gravy. Especially to get two home games, I mean, we couldn’t have asked for anything better. Now it’s like, ‘Game on,’ you know.”

Led by veterans at each position group – namely defensive lineman Matt Loberg, linebacker Wyatt Shodeen and defensive back Sean Chambers – Geneva has shown marked improvement on defense in

2014. The Vikings stood up to Hononegah’s Wing-T without defensive lineman Jack McCloughan, who broke his hand in Geneva’s playoff opener against Hersey and is out for the season.

Geneva and Hononegah met six years to the day after tussling in the same round of the 2008 playoffs, when both programs employed similar schemes. Naturally, the triple option also hinges on repetition becoming internalization.

“You start remembering everything and it almost seems like it’s second-nature by now,” Cary-Grove running back Matt Sutherland said.

“It’s got to be second-nature.”

Spartans up: A second pulsating playoff victory in as many weeks propelled St. Francis into a 6A quarterfinal in its maiden voyage in the class.

That includes two of the area’s elite boys basketball guards – St. Charles North senior Jake Ludwig and St. Charles East Cole Gentry senior Cole Gentry – who put on quite a show when they’re going head-to-head. “ T h e i r workouts are really somet h i n g s p e - Jake Ludwig cial,” Conrad said. “They push each other, they motivate each other and they just want to compete every single time to get the ball.”

“He’s made no secret he wants to win the conference, be the best player in the conference and those are just kind of the things that motivate him, and he’s stayed true to that, and that’s been really impressive in the workouts, how highly motivated he is,” Conrad said.

Ludwig should be especially dangerous as a senior after a solid junior season as he gains greater confidence from the perimeter, Conrad said.

“He’s mentioned that he had a bunch of looks last year where he kind of passed them up,” Conrad said. “I just keep telling him every time you take a shot this season is a shot you’ve made 1,000 times this fall, and I think he’s really worked on his outside shot and his footwork, but I think the more Jake gets to the basket early on and asserts himself, the more [good looks] he’s going to be able to have from outside. He just has to let

it come to him.”

Conrad began his college years at Dayton before transferring to NIU, and said connections made while serving as a student manager under Flyers coach Archie Miller should be helpful as eyes a coaching career in the coming years.

Conrad’s senior year at North in 2010-11 ended on a sour note as the combo guard was dismissed from the team for a disciplinary matter. He said training young players now provides a welcome platform to be a mentor.

“Especially with how my senior year ended, I just knew that I wanted to do something where I can try and help kids not only on the basketball court but try and get them to realize what it takes – hanging out with good people, make sure you’re surrounding yourself with good people and make sure you’re dominating in the classroom,” Conrad said.

Change of venue: Aurora Central Catholic will open its season with a tournament at Aurora Christian rather than at Joliet Catholic, where the Chargers have traditionally played their Thanksgiving tournament in recent seasons.

ACC coach Nate Drye said the more geographically friendly Aurora Christian tournament made sense now that the Chargers and Eagles no longer are part of the same conference. ACC moved from the Suburban Christian to the Metro Suburban Conference this year.

“When you’ve got programs doing well, especially at the beginning of the school year, that just adds excitement to the whole community and the school environment,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s definitely been a great fall with the success that the programs have had. The kids are into it. It makes it fun walking through

the hallways. Everybody’s excited and talking sports. Everybody’s excited for the next matchup in the playoffs.”

Hinsdale South exhaled with a 17-14, overtime win in the second-round against No. 2 DeKalb – the same margin of victory for the Spartans, who edged Lakes, 39-36.

North Stars reflect: The finality of North’s season-ending loss took effect quickly as an emotional group of players made the rounds to coaches and teammates.

“I mean, at the end of the day, we’re just playing for

each other,” Calcagno said.

“It’s not about the scoreboard.

It’s just about the team. And we love each other. We’re going to miss each other.”

North finished with eight victories, matching the 2004 and 2009 teams for the most in program history. The postseason berth was the program’s first since 2009, when the North Stars reached the quarterfinals. This group fell one victory short of that round, but still could stop and appreciate the team’s strides.

“Oh, best time of my life.

Couldn’t ask for anything

(better),” McCarthy said.

“These are my brothers here.

There’s nothing more I can ask for with these guys.”

Get used to it: Each of the 32 quarterfinals statewide will be contested Saturday, continuing a postseason trend that hasn’t exactly favored Fridays.

With winning teams highly unlikely to yield the extra day of preparation, it’s likely the next Friday football games will take place Nov. 28, the date of the state championship games in classes 1A to 4A.

WHAT TO WATCH College football: Toledo at NIU, 7 p.m., ESPN2 Once again, there’s a lot on the line when Toledo comes to town.

Northern Illinois and Toledo meeting in a November midweek contest with a division title in play is nothing new. In 2013, NIU clinched the Mid-American Conference West after defeating Toledo at the Glass Bowl.

Tonight when the football teams meet at Huskie Stadium, the scenario will be the same. NIU wins, it still is in control of its own destiny in the MAC West, but with plenty of work to do.

But if the Huskies lose, they’ll be two games behind Toledo in the division and the hopes for a fifth straight appearance in the conference championship game will be dashed.

“Every time we play Toledo it’s going to be a battle. It’s going to be a dog fight, and this year will be no different,” Geneva product and NIU linebacker Michael Santacaterina said. “It’s going to be a four-quarter game, they’re a great team, they’re going to come in here with a lot of juice, a lot of energy, ready to play, and we’ll be ready for them.”

Countdown to tipoff: Boys basketball practices opened statewide Monday, meaning the next early-season milestone comes in six days, when the first girls games are played.

St. Charles North is among the girls teams tipping off on the first day teams are eligible, facing Washington in Pontiac Tournament play. The Panthers lost to eventual 3A state runner-up Joliet Catholic in a supersectional last season.

“That’s a tough opening game, but I think that we’ll see where we’re at, which is exactly where I want to end up,” North Stars coach Sean Masoncup said.

North returns all five starters from a promising first season under Masoncup, and also welcomes 6-foot-2 junior post Claire Jakaitis, a transfer from Montini.

Jakaitis grew up in District 303 schools – Masoncup was one of her physical education teachers at Haines Middle School – and is eager to reconnect with versatile junior Morgan Rosencrants.

“Me and Morgan were really good friends in middle school, and then we used to carpool to AAU practice,” Jakaitis said.

Rosales to Whitewater: Batavia senior Karina Rosales tweeted her commiment Monday to play her collegiate women’s soccer at NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater beginning next fall.

A forward, Rosales will join a program that has captured five consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic titles.

The Warhawks also feature St. Charles East product Carly Pottle, a sophomore, at forward.

St. Charles North freshman Audrey Ernst toted a litany of titles and responsibilities into Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park.

“She’s a very, very busy young lady,” North Stars coach Shari Hayes said. “She’s class president, she’s in honors classes, she’s involved in everything in the school. She’s in the orchestra.”

And now, she’s an all-stater, to boot.

Ernst completed the course in a 13th-place 17:09, two positions and two seconds behind Geneva junior McKenzie Altmayer, who paced the Chronicle-area contingent in the 3A girls race.

“She’s just very determined. Very hard working. A great girl,” Hayes said.

Here’s a look at some other doings from Detweiller: • Batavia’s girls (11th place) and boys (22nd) advanced together at 3A team entries for the first time, forming a solid contingent. The girls finished with 304 points – three better than 12th-place Geneva – behind freshman Emma Stephens’ 36h-place run in 17:36.

Classmate Daphne Kolody (77th, 18:03) followed Stephens, while junior Dakota Roman (84th, 18:05) was close behind.

The Bulldogs relied on underclassmen throughout the fall and will look to parlay their success into bigger things next season.

Ryan Wieties (92nd, 15:21), David Morrison (119th, 15:30) and Shean Bastian (130th, 15:32) were the top three Batavia boys runners.

• In his first – and only – 3A boys race, Geneva senior Mitchael Deamantopulos finished 159th in 15:46.

“All things considered, I’ll take a rookie making it to state every year,” Vikings coach Bob Thomson said.

Deamantopulos, not the first Vikings boys athlete to enjoy instant success as a senior, impressed Thomson in what he called a “bittersweet” season.

Coaches always relish seeing a runner break through, but in this case, there also was a “what-if?” element attached.

For the second straight day, the Warriors were able to emerge victorious in dominating fashion, defeating St. Joseph, 5-1, in Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A state championship match.

Wheaton Academy (25-11) won its first state championship in program history in the process, distancing the memories of the last two seasons when they settled for fourth in the state both times.

The Warriors never trailed in the match after going up early on a 9th minute strike by senior midfielder Lucas Hoepner, his first of two goals on the afternoon.

Hoepner’s shot inside the 18 hit the crossbar before careening back out to him, finishing the ball with his head for the 1-0 lead.

Culberson added his first of two goals in the 16th minute, collecting a rebound after Ty Seager drove a ball toward the net from the right side of the 18 and had his cross deflected.

Seager hooked up with Hoepner in the 34th minute to triple the lead, but St. Joseph was able to get on the board a minute later off a set piece.

Chargers midfielder Victor Moreno blasted a brilliant shot past Warriors goalkeeper Drew Sezonov at the back post after Sezenov deflected a spinning corner kick back out towards Moreno.

With the 3-1 lead heading into the half, the Warriors easily could have sat back and played it safe with a defensive formation for the final 40 minutes.

But facing a previously unbeaten St. Joe team that had trailed 2-0 at halftime in its semifinal matchup against St. Viator on Friday before coming back to win in a penalty shootout, Seager emphasized playing a complete game.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Uncle Sam seems very happy, perhaps because he is 101 years old this year. Or perhaps because his likeness has been used on a beer stein. How did he become famous? The initials “U.S.” were put on barrels of beef sent to the U.S. military during the War of 1812. Soldiers said the barrels’ U.S. mark stood for “Uncle Sam.” A newspaper reporter thought that was an interesting story and soon Uncle Sam became the nickname for the entire United States. But the picture of Uncle Sam as he looks today was not used until the 1860s, when Thomas Nast, the political cartoonist, created a man with a white beard and stars-and-stripes clothing. A beer stein that looks like that Uncle Sam was made by Schierholz Porcelain of Plaue, Germany, in about 1890. The company, started in 1818, has undergone many changes in ownership and names, but it’s still working. The Uncle Sam stein is rare - only a few colored examples are known. Several porcelain reproductions were made from 1986 to 1995, some multicolored and some with allover “honey” glaze. A more recent reproduction is made of pottery. In 2014, a colorful Schierholz Uncle Sam stein sold for $5,040 at Fox Auctions in Vallejo, Calif. *** Q: I’m 85 years old. After Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, I started collecting and selling scrap iron. Using that money, I bought a $25 U.S. war bond dated Dec. 23, 1942. I never cashed it and still have it. Is it worth more as a collectible than it does as a bond?

A: If the bond has your name on it, you or your heirs are the only ones who can redeem it.

You paid $18.75 for your $25 bond in 1942. It stopped accruing interest in 1982, but over 40 years it earned $81.20 in interest. So today it’s worth $99.95.A collector would not pay anywhere near that price for the bond. If you like the way it looks, scan it in color and frame the image. Then go ahead and cash the bond. *** Q: My father was stationed at Schweinfurt, Germany, at the end of World War II. He didn’t smoke, so he used his ration of cigarettes to trade with locals for various items. One of these was a series of 15 drawings, 15 by 19 inches, of workers doing various tasks at the Schweinfurt Ball Bearing factory. The drawings were done in 1934 and 1935 and are in a linen presentation case with the letters “SFK” above “F&S” in a circle in the upper left corner of the cover. Since the Allied bombers heavily bombed Schweinfurt during the war, I have no idea if very many of these drawings still exist. What would be the approximate value of this set of drawings?

A: Most of the ball bearings used by Germany’s Nazi forces were made in the city of Schweinfurt in 1939. The Allied bombing raids in 1943 were conducted in an effort to destroy Germany’s ability to produce airplane parts.“SKF” stands for Schwedische Kugellagerfabriken, a Swedish company that had a division in Germany that made ball bearings. “F & S” stands for Fichtel & Sachs, another major ball-bearing manufacturer. They say “Made in Hollywood, California.” They have stainless-steel conchas and buckles on them. They were owned by my grandmother, who claimed they originally belonged to Roy Rogers.

Are they of any value?

A: Emil Helge Bohlin (1895-1980) was a Swedish immigrant who came to the United States in 1912. By 1916 he was working with a blacksmith in Cody, Wyoming, making buckles, bits and spurs. In 1920 he opened a shop and made leather goods as well as buckle sets.

He moved to Hollywood in the early 1920s and opened Hollywood Novelty and Leather Shop, where he made silver and leather goods. The business was renamed Edward H. Bohlin, Inc., by 1926, and he started marking his pieces, “Bohlinmade, Hollywood, California.” Many Hollywood stars, including Roy Rogers, bought silver and leather goods from Bohlin. Bohlin’s company, still in business, is now in Los Angeles. Bohlin chaps have sold at auction recently for prices ranging from under $500 for a simple pair with no decoration to over $2,000. More elaborate pairs sell for much more. So would a pair once owned by Roy Rogers - but you would have to prove it. *** Tip: Avoid hanging your sports pennants in direct sunlight. They fade rapidly. Fortunately, exercise, a good diet and insulin treatments have kept her healthy. I recently heard of a breakthrough at Harvard that might someday cure Type 1 diabetes. Can you explain?

Dear Reader: The research you’re referring to was conducted in the Harvard laboratory of Dr. Douglas Melton. Like you, Dr. Melton has a child with Type 1 diabetes. When his child became sick, he redirected his laboratory to the goal of finding a cure.

First, some basics. When we eat, sugar (called glucose) gets absorbed into the bloodstream.

Almost every cell in our body needs glucose to function normally. However, the cells prefer a steady level of glucose in the blood – not too high, not too low, but just right (like Goldilocks).

To keep the glucose level steady, the pancreas – a finger-shaped organ in our abdomen – makes insulin. Specifically, when we eat and blood levels of glucose rise, cells in the pancreas called beta cells make insulin.

Insulin drives glucose from the blood and into cells throughout the body. This lowers blood levels

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. For reasons that remain unclear, the immune system attacks and kills beta cells. As a result, people with Type 1 diabetes no longer can make their own insulin. Without insulin treatments, blood glucose levels rise dangerously high, and other damaging changes occur in body chemistry.

People with Type 1 diabetes require insulin every day to remain in good health. The discovery of insulin treatment for diabetes (in part by scientists here at Harvard) was a Nobel Prize-winning accomplishment. But it was not a cure. For years, scientists have dreamed of somehow replacing the beta cells that have been killed by the disease.

The discovery of stem cells – cells that have the potential to develop into different types of body cells – was exciting for medical research. Among other uses, stem cells theoretically can be coaxed into becoming cells

that have been killed by disease – like beta cells in Type 1 diabetes.

However, until now, no one has figured out a technique for transforming stem cells into beta cells, in the large number required to replace the beta cells killed by the disease.

Dr. Melton’s team seems to have accomplished that feat.

They have been able to create billions of beta cells from one person’s stem cells. When the cells were placed inside diabetic mice, they started making insulin in just the right amounts: Blood levels of glucose were not too high, not too low, but just right.

It will be years before we know if this treatment will work in humans. If it works in the short-run, will it continue to work – will the cells truly produce a cure? And will they do so without causing complications?

So, while this research does not represent a cure, it is likely to be a landmark event on the road to a cure.

Two-suiters are powerful ... if you find a fit with partner. In general, the quicker you show your suits, the better. In this deal, after West opened one spade, North overcalled two no-trump, the Unusual No-Trump, to guarantee at least five cards in each of the lowest-ranking unbid suits: clubs and diamonds. After East passed, South gave preference with three diamonds. What should North have done now?

With a weak hand, North would have passed; with a middling hand, he would have flipped a coin – perhaps raised quietly to four diamonds; but with such a big hand, he had to force to game.

And just in case there was a magic fit, he rebid four hearts.

This was a splinter bid, which usually would have indicated a singleton, but in this case strongly suggested a void. And it promised a huge hand because it was a slam-try opposite a partner who had promised nothing.

Here, of course, South signed off in five diamonds, hoping partner would get the message.

Against five diamonds, West led the spade ace, cashed the spade king, and shifted to a trump. Declarer cashed a second trump, then turned to clubs, ruffing the third round in his hand.

He then ruffed a heart high in the dummy, drew East’s last trump, and claimed.

Always try to show a two-suiter in one bid rather than two, so partner can evaluate his hand immediately.
