Retirement prompts closure of downtown St. Charles jewelry store

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – JP Jewelers – the second tenant to move into the First Street project in downtown St. Charles – is closing shop.

Owner Jim Petterec, who has been in the industry for 47 years, announced last week he is retiring, a decision he described as “bittersweet.” But, the 63-year-old said, “it’s time for me.”

Petterec relocated JP Jewelers to St. Charles from Bartlett in 2009, when the First Street project had only one other tenant, the now-shuttered Il Giardino del Dolce Italian bakery.

Former Ray’s Tavern site in STC set to reopen under new name, management

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The former Ray’s Evergreen Tavern site is weeks away from reopening under different management and a new name.

The St. Charles Liquor Control Commission on Monday recommended approval of a new Class B liquor license for The Evergreen Pub and Grill, an establishment that also is seeking a 2 a.m. permit.

The St. Charles City Council is expected to vote on the matter next week.

“I’m in complete support and wish you well,” Mayor Ray Rogina said.

The representatives from The Evergreen described the eatery as a pub and grill with a supper club-themed menu offering homemade pizza, steaks, chops, tenderloin, a fish fry and craft beers.

It should open within the next few weeks, they said.

recession delayed its progress.

The city celebrated the groundbreaking of the First Street project’s third phase, which is across the street from JP Jewelers, in September.

Petterec has gotten a “phenomenal” response to his retirement announcement and has been “inundated with wonderful well wishes,” he said, calling the support “overwhelming and very humbling.”

He plans to close the store shortly after Jan. 1, he said, indicating a desire to help customers throughout the holiday season.

“We don’t want to abandon people,” he said.

Business manager Julie Knebel said those at The Evergreen have been busy readying the establishment, at 1400 W. Main St., for opening by giving it a fresh coat of paint and new flooring, among other cosmetic changes. Evergreen intentionally was kept in the name as a nod to the property’s history, she said.

In his summary to the commission, St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said the ownership team has 35 years

of experience in the restaurant industry, and this will be the team’s fourth location. The others are in Gilberts and Chicago, he said.

Knebel said they previously operated River Lane Pub and Eatery in Geneva. Ray’s Evergreen closed in September. In a Facebook post dated Sept. 13 – its most recent update – the establishment apologized to its friends and patrons and referenced issues with the Department of Revenue.

School District 303 moves graduation to DeKalb

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – St. Charles School District 303 is taking a break from the Sears Centre.

Beginning with the Class of 2017, the district will hold graduation for St. Charles East and North high schools at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center in DeKalb, the school board unanimously decided Monday during its

meeting at Ferson Creek Elementary School.

The contract is through 2019.

At $12,500, the annual rate is less than the district’s arrangement with the Hoffman Estates facility, which would cost $32,559 annually with a 7.5 percent increase in year three.

The rate for the Convocation Center is fixed for all three years.

The district, however, must change the date of the gradua-

tion ceremony.

Instead of holding graduation the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, it will be the first Sunday in June: June 4, 2017; June 3, 2018; and June 2, 2019.

Superintendent Don Schlomann joked the juniors will groan over the change.

“Another week of school they’ll have,” he said.

Before voting, several board members noted the $20,000 in annual savings, which President Steve Spurling described

as “substantial.”

The three-year cost is $37,500 for the Convocation Center and $100,118.93 for the Sears Centre, according to information given to the board.

The decision wasn’t made without some dissatisfaction.

“It’s very far,” board member Kathy Hewell said, noting NIU students from the east side of St. Charles likely room at the university than commute.

Indeed. According to information provided to the board,

the change in venue will require students and their families to travel farther: 25 miles to DeKalb versus 17 miles to Hoffman Estates, or about six extra minutes of travel time.

As a suggestion, board member Lori Linkimer said the district could offer transportation to the Convocation Center like it did the first year graduation moved from the football fields to the Sears Centre.

“Just throwing it out there,” she said.

CEO: Medical marijuana dispensary to open today

Residents to see water, sewer rate increases over 5 years

The PharmaCannis North Aurora dispensary will open sometime today at 161 S. Lincolnway, Suite 301, North Aurora, Co-Chief Executive Officer Teddy Scott said.

“We’re looking forward to being open,” Scott said.

PharmaCannis officials made clear in posts on facebook.com/PharmaCannis even though the North Aurora and Ottawa locations generally will be closed on Tuesdays, both locations are planning to open at 9 a.m. today.

Patients who have designated the North Aurora location as their preferred dispensary can bring their state-issued Medical Cannabis Registry Identification Card to buy marijuana.

No appointment is necessary, Scott said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva residents will see rate increases for water and sewer starting Dec. 1, as aldermen Monday unanimously recommended approval of a five-year plan to increase long-term revenue stability.

An average residential user of 700 cubic feet of water a month will see an increase of $5 by Dec. 1, to $58 from $53.

The subsequent increases for that user will be $63 in 2017, $67 in 2018, $70 in 2019

“The primary objective of a rate study is sustainability,” Hyder said.

The rates also needs to have a fair and equitable distribution of costs, allowing the city to meet its environmental compliance requirements, Hyder said.

“We continue to see decline in water sales,” Hyder said. “We see utilities struggling [with] people using less and less water. So there is that balance of needing to increase rates.”

Cities still have to maintain their water and sewer systems, no matter how often customers use the water, Hyder said.

The city is facing a capital improvement plan that calls for spending $12 million on its

wastewater treatment plant, $3 million on its water distribution system and $2 million on sewer collection rehabilitation, Hyder said.

Without the proposed increases, the city’s water fund would run out of money by 2017 and the sewer fund by 2018, Hyder said.

“So currently, we don’t have a sustainable picture,” Hyder said.

Aldermen recommended the rate increase acting as the Committee of the Whole. The City Council will take final action.

A NEW HOME

New Elburn fire station much larger than previous station

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Fire trucks began to arrive Monday morning at the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District’s new station on Route 38 in Elburn.

After 14 months of construction and years of planning, the new station, which sits east of Route 47, on the north side of Route 38, was bustling with activity Monday, its first day of operation. Assistant Fire Chief Tate Haley has been overseeing the project, and he provided a tour highlighting some of the features of the new station.

The station is spacious, much larger than the previous station at 210 E. North St. in Elburn. In several spots, Haley showed off areas that were not yet designated. He said he wants the station to be prepared for growth. The district covers areas beyond Elburn, including the Mill Creek subdivision, and Elburn’s population is expected to rise as building begins in the Elburn station area.

“When I come back in 10, 15 or 20 years, I want to know that the vision I have now will be fully occupied,” Haley said, adding, “People ask why it is so big. … It is built for the future.”

Funds for the station had been covered by the department, and no additional public funding was required. Original cost estimates were between $8 million and $10 million, and Haley said the station came in at close to $10 million.

As Haley spoke, Pam Hall, the station’s administrative assistant, smiled as she looked around the department’s new home, which is more than twice as large as the building on North Street.

Those in the community will notice emergency vehicles going in and out of the large building, which is east of Walgreens. Haley said an open house is in the works for Dec. 13, so residents will have a chance to see the new features.

Visitors also will notice more displays and areas open for public education. Haley said such items previously would

be kept in boxes most of the year and taken out for special occasions, such as the annual Christmas Stroll.

Some features won’t easily visible be to the public. For instance, instead of the traditional fire pole, firefighters can go

directly from the second-floor residence area to the vehicle area via a shiny red slide. The previous station didn’t have such a feature, since it is a one-story station. Haley said he asked those at the station for a preference and went with

the slide.

“Either I created my own tradition, or I broke tradition,” Haley said with a smile.

The station has three levels. On the middle level, which is the main level, there are offices, boardrooms, training areas and a kitchen. In one wing, there is a location for the fire marshal.

Downstairs, there is a fitness room, one of the key upgrades. Previously, firefighters wanting to use a fitness room would use one in a different building, one nearby that once housed ambulances, Haley said.

“Pretty much, it was a glorified shed,” Haley said.

The downstairs area also includes an emergency operations center and a large boardroom area that also can be used for training. In a downstairs area he said will be a museum of sorts, a historic wheel sat among other educational items. He said that wheel and another on display had been at the old station for years, but some people never realized it.

Upstairs, there are 15 bunks, a large multipurpose room and a patio. Firefighters can travel down the slide into the vehicle area. On the side of that area is a training tower, which also can be used to dry hoses. Haley said many areas of training can be implemented in that area, including rescues and the ability to work in confined spaces.

Haley said it had been a challenge, but he expected all of the equipment to be at the new station by Monday night.

He said it can be difficult for a fire department to accomplish tasks related to a move.

“Some businesses can shut down on Friday … and then reopen [in a new location] on Monday,” he said. “We can’t shut down.”

There are 3,300 qualifying patients in Illinois, according to estimates from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Scott on Monday afternoon did not have the exact number of patients who designated North Aurora as their preferred dispensary, but he said there were more people assigned to the North Aurora location than their Ottawa location.

The PharmaCannis Ottawa dispensary briefly was open Monday and PharmaCannis officials plan to open their Schaumburg and Evanston locations in the near future.

GENEVA – The number stuck in Patrick Bily’s mind: 75 million.

That’s the number of meals the Northern Illinois Food Bank aims to distribute annually by the year 2020.

Food bank personnel shared that goal with more than 200 volunteers who gathered Saturday morning at the organization’s West Suburban Center in Geneva to kick off the annual holiday meal box program.

Bily recalled the 75 million goal as he prepped cardboard boxes for the assembly line, which would fill the empty boxes with such ingredients as stuffing mix, gravy, vegetables and fruit. That goal – along with the other facts and figures about hunger shared during the orientation – got to him, he said.

Noting he works for Bimbo Bakeries USA and most of the day’s other volunteers also represented food manufacturers, Bily said it is “our responsibility to do something about

that.”

The boxes assembled Saturday will be paired with a frozen turkey, providing everything needed to make a holiday meal for up to eight people.

Donna Lake, the food bank’s communications director, said the meal boxes not only help alleviate stress for those with financial struggles but they also give neighbors in need the same opportunity to prepare a holiday meal.

“So many memories are made around the table,” she said.

Music – including James Brown’s “I Feel Good” – provided a continuous, upbeat soundtrack for the volunteers as they packed a seemingly never-ending stream of boxes.

Dressed as the food bank’s turkey mascot, volunteer-turned-intern Alejandra Roman, 23, visited each line, pausing for pictures.

“It is fun,” the Aurora resident said. “I really do like it.”

PERRENE KLEMM Born: Aug. 24, 1926 Died: Nov. 7, 2015

Perrene Pingel Klemm, age 89, of Maple Park passed away Nov. 7, 2015, at Oak Crest Care Center.

Born Aug. 24, 1926, in Arlington Heights, IL, the daughter of Paul and Ethel Pingel.

She was a very active child, loving the outdoors and sports of all kinds all through grade school.

She attended elementary school in Arlington Heights and graduated in 1940. She attended Arlington Heights High School and graduated in 1944.

During her high school years, Perrene was on the baseball and basketball teams. She was also very interested in babysitting and caring for children.

She babysat for many families in the neighborhood. She was a member of the Campfire Girls throughout school and eventually became a leader.

On Sept. 6, 1947, Perrene married John Julius Klemm at the Catholic Church in Franklin Park, IL. After a honeymoon to Los Angeles, CA, they returned to Maple Park and settled on the family farm where Johnnie was born. They began their new life together back on John’s family farm and where he continued to serve the needs of the land.

Upon graduation, she attended Comptometry Business School in Chicago, IL. After completion, she accepted a position with the Jewel Tea Company in Barrington, IL, managing the coffee department and working as a roasted coffee taster.

She was on the Jewel Tea baseball and bowling team.

She was a 4-H leader for 15 years and a member of the DeKalb County

Home Extension. She was a 4-H camp counselor at Camp Shaw-wa-na-see for many years. Perrene and Johnnie were also Board Members of the former Notre Dame High School for girls in DeKalb and was a PTA member for many years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Maple Park and participated in the Cenacle Guild. Perrene drove a school bus for Kaneland School District for 32 years, a job that she absolutely loved. She transported several generations of several families.

She loved being on the farm and working in the fields. She always had a large vegetable and flower garden. She loved to mow lawn and took pride in the beauty of the farm.

Perrene and Johnnie had six children, who were active in sports, scouts and 4-H. She loved to play cards, especially 500, and played with several card clubs. She loved to dance and Perrene and Johnnie could be seen on Saturdays nights, out dancing with friends at the Eagles Club and Moose Club. Perrene lived on the family farm until she moved to Oak Crest in 2005.

She volunteered at the reception desk and resident store, played Bingo, was in the kitchen band and the lunch bunch and went on many day excursions with the activity department.

She was the loving wife of John Klemm and proud mother of Kathleen (Joe) Ludwikowski, Cynthia (Michael) Sosinski, John (Debra) Klemm, Christine (David) Carrington, Edward (Lynette) Klemm and Michael (Donna) Klemm. Perrene is a loving Grandma to Amy Ludwikowski, Ryan Ludwikowski, Erin (Paul) Choin, Chad Carrington (Susan Vrchota) Michael Sosinski (Mallory Manning) Katelyn Klemm ( Andy Moon), Alyssa Klemm, Jason Klemm and Joshua Klemm and Catina, Joseph, Justin and Jason Torres. She is a Great Grandma to Camden and Remy Choin, Shyanne Groh, Triasia Housenn, Melvin Gay Jr., Maliyha Gay and Deon Kynand; great, great grandmother to Brooklyn Price.

She is survived by her siblings, Phil (Diane) Pingel, Priscilla (Lew Woelke), Pam Barry; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Pingel; many nieces and nephews and a family of friends.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, John Klemm; her parents, Paul and Ethel Pingel; her in-laws, Paul and Loretta Klemm; brothers, Paul Pingel and Preston (Dorothy) Pingel; sisters, Pauline Pingel and Pernet (Gerry) Goble.

Visitation will be at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Maple Park, in the Novak Center from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a rosary service at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11,

2015. A mass to celebrate her faith will begin at 11:00 a.m., with a time of visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., Nov. 12, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. DOYLE OLSON Born: Oct. 5, 1933 Died: Nov. 4, 2015

Doyle Olson, age 82, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.

He was greatly loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their families as well as a wide circle of friends. He was the son of Truman and Mabel Olson and the brother of Dale Olson and Ruth Ann Guderian.

Doyle was born on Oct. 5, 1933, in Marseilles, IL. On Dec. 19, 1954, he married the love of his life Joanne Russell in Community of Christ Church in rural Marseilles, IL. He was a graduate of Ottawa H.S. and received a bachelor of education degree in 1955 from Illinois State University. In 1955, they moved to Aurora IL where Doyle taught elementary school. In 1958, they moved to St. Charles when he began a successful 36 year career as a State Farm Insurance Agent. Doyle was very active in many community organizations including Jaycees, Kiwanis, and served as president of St. Charles Park District. Doyle will always be remembered for his warm smile and quiet leadership. He leaves a legacy of honesty, integrity and trust for all that knew him. He was an avid sports fan and an outdoorsman who appreciated the beauty of nature. “The Farm” in Wisconsin was his special happy place. He loved to travel and lived life to the fullest.

He is survived by his wife of more than 61 years, Joanne; sons, Steve (JoEllen), Jeff, Bruce; daughter, Diane (Steve) Haskin; six grandchildren, Kevin Haskin, Melissa (Paul) Quick, Kyle Haskin, Molly (Jesse) Gibbs, Nicholas Olson, Paige Olson; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Quick, Aria Quick and Landon Gibbs.

DOROTHY RUSSELL Born: Feb. 18, 1932 Died: Nov. 5, 2015

Dorothy Russell, 83, of Elgin passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center, Elgin.

She was born Feb. 18, 1932, in Elgin the daughter of Carl and Irene Kahn Meissner. Dorothy was raise on the Meissner family farm in the Wasco-Plato Twp. Area. She attended grade school in Wasco and was a graduate of Plato Center High School, where she met Raymond Russell.

They became sweethearts and were married on February 3, 1951. After marriage they farmed and raised

Registered Holsteins on the Russell family farm in Plato Township. She enjoyed yard work, feeding and watching birds and squirrels. Dorothy also thought the world of her many dogs as well as the many dogs that visited her at the Rosewood facility.

She was a good cook and was noted for her great desserts. In 1978 they sold the cattle and then retired from farming in 1983. In 1998 they moved into the new home in the woods where Dorothy lived until October of 2013. Due to illness she moved to Rosewood Nursing Home, Elgin.

She was a sports enthusiast, and enjoyed the Cubs, Northwestern University, the Bears and followed her son, Randy’s sports career in Basketball, Track and Cross Country at Central High School. Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Raymond Russell and her son, Randy (Aleta) Russell and many other friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 41W170 Russell Rd., Plato Center. Burial will follow at Plato Center Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services in the church.

Firefighters responded to an attic fire Sunday morning in the 200 block of Larchwood Lane in North Aurora. The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damages, North Aurora Fire Chief Ryan Lambert said.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – A fire that damaged a home Sunday morning in North Aurora remains under investigation, fire officials said.

Fire crews at 11:26 a.m.

Sunday responded to the 200 block of Larchwood Lane in North Aurora for the incident.

Firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the north side of the attic area of a single-story home, North Aurora Fire Chief Ryan Lambert said.

“We had a heavily involved attic fire,” Lambert said.

Fire crews had the fire extinguished in about 30 minutes, but there was smoke

damage throughout the home, he said.

“It’s still under investigation, but we’re looking at the fireplace, the chimney as a possible source [of the fire],” Lambert said.

The occupants of the home were out of the house by the time firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported, Lambert said. The roof sustained a significant amount of structural damage, and there is about $100,000 in estimated damages to the home, Lambert said.

The Aurora, Batavia, Fermilab, Geneva and Sugar Grove fire departments assisted North Aurora with the incident.

The phony ‘War on Christmas’ is back

By PETULA DVORAK The Washington Post Like everything connected to Christmas, this year’s “War on Christmas” freakout has arrived early. And it has taken the form of a red Starbucks cup.

Never mind that stores across America already are playing Christmas carols.

Forget that Wal-Mart started its holiday layaway plan in August, and Target rolled out the Christmas trees alongside Halloween decorations in September. And let’s pretend that radio stations across the country aren’t getting angry calls about Mariah Carey’s Christmas list hitting the airwaves the first week of October.

Nope. The Christmas crusaders are certain that the War on Christmas is on yet again.

It’s totally obvious because Starbucks is serving pumpkin spice lattes and caramel macchiatos in plain red cups this holiday season. (Oops. Did I say “holiday”?)

Starbucks won’t feature tree ornaments or snowflakes or reindeer like it did on its old winter cups. Because those totally said birth of Jesus, right?

This year’s design is a simple red ombre that goes from poppy on top to cranberry on the bottom.

So without pictures of snowmen or a nutcracker or wreaths, Starbucks must hate Jesus, and some evangelical Christians joined in an online assault on the coffee goliath this week. The devout went wild. One after another, folks declared on Facebook and other social media that they’ve had their last nonfat vanilla latte.

One pastor urged caffeinators who didn’t want to boycott Starbucks to tell baristas that their names are “Merry Christmas” when they order their drinks, forcing them to write it (probably

“Mary Krysmus”) on their cups.

And when the caramel macchiato is ready? They HAVE to say “Merry Christmas!” Ha! Double gotcha. Take that, “Happy Holidays” subversives across the land.

This? This is what Christmas is all about?

I’m willing to concede that there is a war on Christmas. The real Christmas.

If Christmas is about honoring the birth of an impoverished child to a homeless couple who must eventually flee a tyrant to keep their baby safe, then, yes, there is a war on Christmas.

If Christmas is about peace, joy, generosity, thankfulness and goodwill among people, then yes, there is a war on Christmas.

But this Starbucks frenzy is a faux war on a faux Christmas.

In a country where 15 million children sometimes don’t have enough eat, how could any real Christian conclude that the color of coffee cups deserves their outrage? Only in honor of the faux Christmas.

In a nation where 22 percent of our children live in poverty, why would any churchgoer care about a local shopping mall’s decision to go with “glacier” themed decorations this winter instead of red/ green/Santa/trees? Only in honor of the faux Christmas.

Across the globe, children are walking hundreds of miles to escape unspeakable violence, and red cups are supposed to command our attention and advocacy? Only in honor of the faux Christmas.

The trappings of this country’s corporate Christmas are being shoved down our throats earlier every year. Faux Christmas creep is real. How about if we declare a war on that Christmas?

Vikes back to the grind

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston is well aware of what his program lost to graduation from last year’s team that made a trip to the Class 4A state tournament.

As invaluable as that experience will be to the players returning to the Vikings this year, Ralston knows it can go one of two ways.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” Ralston said. “I’ve seen teams that have had seasons like us and then the next year they fall on their face. But I’ve also seen teams build off those great seasons and have ones that many people don’t expect them to have. We’ll see what kind of team we are, but our staff has stressed that we are not the same team as last year, and that’s OK.” A 30-5 season certainly is hard to replicate, but Geneva does return the likes of center Loudon Vollbrecht and forward Bennett Fuzak, both of whom played key roles last season.

Vollbrecht injured his left knee at the end of Friday’s Geneva football game. Ralston said that Vollbrecht will undergo an MRI as the team awaits more information.

Ralston also mentioned that with the excitement and buzz around the basketball program with its recent success, it hasn’t made his job any easier as these first few days of tryouts come along. But if the summer was the players’ time, now it’s Ralston’s turn to see what he;s got.

“The summer was their time, the players’ time to work on their individual game and develop their skills,” Ralston said Monday, the first day of boys basketball practice throughout the state. “Now it’s our time as coaches to be constantly evaluating to see what we’ve got and narrow it down.

Poulin said his main focus was to take care of the North Stars’ business above all, before worrying about any opponent, although he did say the first few games of the season are against tough competition.

He also thinks this team, more so than usual, has the potential for growth, and he’s excited to see that when the postseason looms.

Batavia football’s success opens doors: There’s no doubt

that if Jim Nazos had his choice, he’d want Canaan Coffey and Kamontez Thomas in his starting lineup when the Bulldogs host the Batavia Windmill Classic in a couple weeks.

Actually, the Batavia coach is all right if he doesn’t, because that would mean those two would be playing for a football state championship in DeKalb.

but it also gives several players the opportunities to prove something to him that they may not have had with Coffey and Thomas there.

“The football team is doing something special right now,” Nazos said. “They are chasing a life dream of winning a state championship. It’s great. It also gives other guys on this team on opportunity to be seen that they may not have gotten. We’ll be here when (Coffey and Thomas) get done. In the middle of January, you’ll see, they’ll be in full gear and so will we.”

Albanese playing well in role

kdruley@shawmedia.com It’s easy to say Batavia junior tight end Glenn Albanese has found his niche after a three (and nearly four) touchdown game against Simeon on Friday night.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Albanese caught just three passes in the 35-14 win, but all three went for scores in the Bulldogs’ victory in a Class 7A second-round playoff game. His three scores gave him seven touchdowns in a season that has featured mixed roles for Albanese.

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the junior tight end this year, having some games where he goes without a catch and then others that show glimpses of breakout moments like Friday night. Nonetheless, Albanese has done whatever head coach Dennis Piron and offensive coordinator Sean Anderson have asked of him.

“Some nights we ask him to block more, helping out with the run game, while other times, he’s involved more in the passing game,” Piron said.

Class 7A quarterfinal (5) Cary-Grove (10-1) at (4) Batavia (10-1), 1 p.m. Saturday “Glenn’s adjusted extremely well and he continues to get better with each and every game. We have a number of weapons, but when Glenn is contributing and doing what we ask of him, it makes our offense that much more dangerous.”

One route that appeared to be open often Friday night was the up-the-middle seam from quarterback Kyle Niemiec to Albanese, a play that, when open, usually contributes to big nights for the tight end.

“We practice that play a lot,” Albanese said. “Coming in, our coaches do such a good job of showing us what the defenses are going to give us. So we practice these plays and when we run them in the games, it’s almost exactly how we think because of the good preparation.”

Albanese could have had a fourth score Friday night. On a 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Niemiec faked a keeper, jumped and lofted a ball to Al-

banese in the back of the end zone. He initially appeared to come down with the ball, but the back judge said he did not maintain possession all the way to the ground.

“I thought I caught it, but they said I didn’t tuck it away,” Albanese said with a smile. “I was pretty excited after I got the first one, and when you have a quarterback as good as Kyle Niemiec, it makes my job a whole lot easier.”

Through 11 games, Albanese, a Louisville baseball commit, has 23 receptions for 360 yards.

Bowing with grace: Geneva players and coaches lingered on Bradley-Bourbonnais’ field far longer than the victorious Boilermakers after Friday’s 41-22 loss in the second round of the 7A playoffs.

Although most of the Bradley-Bourbonnais contingent retreated to the locker room after the postgame handshake line, the Vikings had no trouble speaking well of their opponents.

“That was a great team,” Geneva senior running back Justin Taormina said.

“They’re very disciplined. And I wish them good fortune in the

future.”

Bradley-Bourbonnais (8-3) will host Niles North in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Boilermakers, 7A qualifiers for the fourth straight season, have won the most games since the 1991 team went 11-1.

“They were just a very mentally strong football team, and they executed very well,” Taormina said.

Naturally, the Vikings gave themselves some credit for a season that ended one victory short of the program’s second straight quarterfinal appearance.

“It’s going to be a long, quiet car ride,” Taormina said.

“Kids are going to be mourning. But, I mean, what do you expect? We lost a playoff game, and it was our seniors’ last game. I wish everybody the best of luck in the future and good luck in college.”

Et cetera: Each of the state’s 32 quarterfinal games over eight classes will be contested Saturday. … Gates will open at 11 a.m. for Batavia’s 1 p.m. quarterfinal against visiting Cary-Grove. Tickets cost $6.

On the boys side of 3A, St. Charles East took 11th place overall, led by personal bests from its top two runners, Mike Gerkin (15:08, 53rd) and Mark Sciurba (15:13, 67th).

“I mean, you can’t ask for much more than what the guys gave us today,” East coach Chris Bosworth said.

“Our top two guys run PRs, the whole team gave us everything they had, and we finished right where I thought we would. I’m extremely proud of the guys’ effort today

Three weeks before Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state meet, Batavia girls cross country coach Chad Hillman took out a trophy earned by the 2008 girls track and field team and set it in front of his team.

Hillman and his fellow coaches left the room, giving the girls a chance to take it all in, and, after very little talk about it prior, made their goal for the state meet.

The Bulldogs decided it was realistic to set a goal to finish as one of the top three teams in Class 3A and, on Saturday, they made that a reality.

Sophomore Emma Stephens finished with a personal record of 16:54, which was also good enough for 13th place individually, to lead Batavia at Peoria’s Detweiller Park, giving that 2008 trophy some company.

“I’ve told the girls that success during the season is one thing, but trophy teams take it to a whole different level come November,” Hillman said.

“The girls have done such a good job, especially over the last two weeks and I’m really proud of what they accomplished.”

Stephens was one of three sophomores, along with Daphne Kolody (17:39) and Marygrace Golden (17:42), that ran with senior Dakota Roman (17:26) as part of Batavia’s top four for most of the season. Stephens knew it was realistic to accomplish the Bulldogs’ goal.

“Sitting there looking at that trophy, we had our minds set on that for us,” Stephens said. “That was our main focus and today was such an awesome day for all of us.”

Geneva senior McKenzie Altmayer was the top local individual finisher, taking seventh overall and running a personal record, 16:46, in her final high school race. The Vikings placed ninth as a team.

“It hasn’t really set in yet that this is my last high school race,” Altmayer said.

Sandburg, with a score of 79, took the 3A boys crown with four finishers inside the top 22.

In the Class 2A race, the Kaneland girls team highlighted local finishers, taking home 10th place as a team, led by Brianna Bower’s ninth place individual finish in 17:35.

Bower also set a PR in her final high school race, knowing that was her primary focus after making three previous trips to the state meet.

“Today was just a great day in general,” Bower said.

“The weather was perfect, but honestly, everyone here is so talented. There’s so many people and everyone is so excited to get started. I don’t like to come in with too many expectations, but just go do my thing. The three years prior to this have been learning experiences, and I’m really happy to finish my last race this way.”

Fellow senior Noelle Espino (18:07) also helped the Knights with her 29th place finish.

Other top local finishers in the girls 2A race included Rosary senior and Batavia native Madison Ronzone (17:42), who took 11th overall, as well as Burlington Central’s Megan Safranski (17:50), who finished her junior year with a 20th place finish.

Yorkville’s girls took home the team title with four finishers inside the top 12.

For the Kaneland boys in their 2A race, the team result may not have been what the Knights hoped, but coach Chad Clarey knew it was not because of a lack of effort.

Kaneland had six runners set a PR, including sophomore Matt Richtman, whose 15:04 clocking, good for 18th place, set a school record. Senior Austin Kintz ended his Kaneland career with a 15:46 to help the Knights finish 17th out of 25 competing teams.

Spartans fight back, are headed to state

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com BOLINGBROOK – In the rare case where two defending state champion girls volleyball teams meet with a trip to state on the line, it would only be fair for the match to be a thriller and ultimately decided by a teeter-tottering final set that delivered a plethora of excitement.

So, that’s precisely what occurred with St. Francis and Benet in front of a standing-room only crowd Saturday afternoon in the Class 4A Bolingbrook Supersectional.

In a third set that featured 11 ties, including the final one at 20 apiece, the Spartans finally pulled away behind Molly Haggerty’s effort, winning, 25-22, to advance to next weekend’s state tournament.

The Redwings took the opening set, 25-21, before St. Francis won the second one, also by a 25-22 score.

It was the first time the Spartans had lost the opening set and come back to win since they did it against Mother McAuley in September.

“Everybody got their money’s worth tonight, and it was a fabulous crowd,” Spartans coach Peg Kopec said. “We’re very blessed to have the talent and heart that this team possesses. I couldn’t be happier for them.”

St. Francis (37-3) didn’t appear like it was heading to Illinois State’s Redbird Arena, the site of the state tournament, anytime soon in the early going, falling behind 16-7 in the first set.

“You could tell that Benet is a very well-coached team and didn’t come out scared at all,” Haggerty said. “They came out aggressive, serving hard and hitting hard. They just played really well in the first set and we couldn’t adjust to them.”

But, the Spartans did adjust.

What many probably overlooked was that the Spartans outscored the Redwings, 14-9, the remainder of the first set, and that seemed to spark them.

“Benet hits really hard, so we made sure to make sure our hands were really stiff,” St.

“We kept our composure even though we lost the first set. We fought back the whole game, stayed together as a team and it showed.”

Molly Haggerty St. Francis volleyball Francis junior Kamryn Malloy said. “Anything flimsy would just go right off, so we adjusted there. We also started focusing more on our passing before our hitting.”

Tied at 21 in the second set, the Spartans received two kills from Malloy (12 kills, 10 digs, nine service points), another from Haggerty (22 kills, 12 digs), and then pounced on an error by the Redwings that gave them the winning point.

“We kept our composure even though we lost the first set,” Haggerty said. “We fought back the whole game, stayed together as a team and it showed.”

Benet (37-3) never allowed St. Francis to lead by two points in the final set until an ace by Malloy and a kill from Haggerty gave the Spartans a 22-20 advantage.

The Redwings pulled to within 23-22, but another kill from Haggerty, followed by a Benet error, ensured that the Spartans were destined for Normal. They will face CaryGrove in a semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Although the Spartans have won three consecutive 3A state titles, this is their first season as a 4A program. They’ll be aiming for the program’s 12th state title.

“I think a match like that before state helps us prepare ourselves for an even bigger match,” Haggerty said. “Obviously, Benet is a great team and helped us for the long run.”

Daniele Messa had 30 assists and nine digs while Becca Fernandez chipped in with nine digs.

All five of Kaneland’s first quarter possessions began on the 20-yard line via touchback, with Montini kicker Michael Cooney having the wind at his back. Meanwhile, Montini had three possessions begin inside the Kaneland 33 – thanks to two interceptions and a 4-yard Kaneland punt.

“We knew coming in that they were a powerful team,” Marczuk said. “It was a bad way to start off and I think that led the rest of the way for us, but hats off to Montini.

They’re a good football team and they’re going to go really far in the playoffs.”

The Knights (7-4) had a tough time getting anything going on offense against a tough Broncos defense in the first half. They finished with 32 yards of offense (24 passing, eight rushing) in the first half with the Montini starters

in – 18 of which came on the Knights’ opening drive of the game.

“They had a nice drive to start the game and we ended up holding them,” Andriano said. “But then we adjusted and settled into their offense and our defense took over.

Then it was lights out and we got the field position the rest of the quarter.”

The Knights (7-4) advanced to the second round after a dramatic 33-31 victory against Belvidere North in Maple Park after Drew Franklin made the game-winning field goal with 1:01 remaining. It was the first 6A playoff victory in school history.

“I’m really proud with how we finished the end of the season,” Fedderly said. “We turned things around. We were 3-3 and won four straight games and are the first team to win a 6A playoff game, so they have a lot to be proud of.”

LOMBARD – For the third time in six seasons, the Kaneland football team’s season ended at the hands of Montini.

The Broncos, the top seed in Class 6A, jumped on the No. 8 Knights early, building a five-touchdown lead less than 30 seconds into the second quarter of a 42-7 win in the second round of the 6A playoffs Saturday afternoon.

“That’s not the way we wanted to start the game, but they have a tremendous football team; everybody knows that,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “All the credit goes to them. They beat us in all phases of the game today.”

In the 2010 and 2011 Class 5A semifinals, the Broncos, who were the underdog against the No. 1 Knights each time, knocked out Kaneland before going on to win the state championship.

As the No. 6 seed in both seasons, the Broncos won, 2714, in 2010 and, 35-31, in 2011.

The Broncos (11-0) advanced to face No. 5 DeKalb in the 6A quarterfinals.

“That’ll be fun, that’ll be a challenge,” Montini coach Chris Andriano said of DeKalb, which he said he saw on film while preparing for Kaneland. “We got to go over there – go on the road. There’s always a few things you need to work on when you go on the road.”

Kaneland senior quarterback Jake Marczuk finished with a game-high 103 rushing yards on 14 carries and had a game-long 48-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. He went 6 for 13 passing for 32 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions – both in the first quarter.

Montini’s high-powered offense, which has now scored at least 35 points in eight games this season, was led by senior quarterback Justin Blake (10 for 13 passing, 78 yards, two TDs and nine carries for 84 rushing yards and a touchdown) and junior running back Prince Walker (11 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns).

Use your collections to celebrate holidays like Veterans Day. Nov. 11, 1919, was the day chosen to commemorate the Armistice, the agreement signed the year before that ended World War I. The celebration, named Armistice Day, featured parades, meetings, a moment of silence, prayers and events that encouraged good will. It also included displays of the flag on all government buildings, schools, churches and other suitable places. The holiday was changed in 1954 to honor veterans of all wars and the name became “Veterans Day.” In 1968 a bill was passed, proclaiming that all national holidays will be celebrated on a Monday to make long holiday weekends. The public complained, and in 1978 Veterans Day was returned to the original Nov. 11 date. Collectors like to own and will pay extra for vintage pieces that picture the flag, Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty or any other patriotic symbols. During past decades, advertisers could alter a flag with a product name, claim an endorsement from the president, or use the symbols in ways that now are not considered politically correct.

22 After years of slow progress, stem cell research quickens Dear Dr. K: People have been talking about stem cells as a revolutionary technique for a long time.

Has anything come of it? And why has it been so controversial?

Dear Reader: You’re right; people have been excited about stem cells for nearly 25 years. Yet progress was quite slow, and some people had major ethical concerns.

But in the past eight years, progress has accelerated and the ethical issues largely have been circumvented.

Theoretically, stem cells could be used to replace cells that are killed by disease – heart cells killed in a heart attack or brain cells killed by Alzheimer’s disease. But to explain the exciting potential of stem cells, I first need to define some terms and concepts.

Each human being is made of trillions of cells.

They are grouped together into organs, such as the eye and the stomach.

Each organ contains types of specialized cells, and each type looks and acts differently.

Each of these very different cells came from just one original cell: the fertilized egg. The egg divides and keeps dividing until one cell has become trillions.

Inside every human cell are a little over 20,000 genes – the same 20,000-plus genes. The genes inside a light-sensing cell in the eye are the same as the genes in an acid-making cell in the stomach. So if both cells have the same genes, why are these two different types of specialized cells so different from each other?

What defines a specialized cell is what genes inside the cell are turned on. The eye cell and the stomach cell have different genes turned on.

OK, back to the fertilized egg: About five days

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff after the egg is fertilized, it has divided into several hundred cells. Some of these cells are called embryonic stem cells.

They have the ability to turn into any type of specialized cell in the body.

Indeed, they promptly begin to do that, and the embryo starts to form organs.

With a few exceptions, once a cell has become specialized, it will stay that way until it dies.

For decades we believed an embryonic stem cell could turn into a specialized cell, but not vice versa.

For example, suppose you needed new heart cells because of a heart attack. Until 2007, there were two problems with using embryonic stem cells to do this. First, the embryonic stem cells would come from the embryo of another human being.

Your immune system might well recognize those cells as foreign and attack them. Second, many of those embryos would have come from induced abortions, raising ethical questions.

If only you could use your own embryonic stem cells, that would solve both problems.

But of course your own embryonic stem cells existed only briefly, a long time ago, and you can’t turn back the clock.

Then, in 2007, a research breakthrough changed everything. The breakthrough basically showed that you can turn back the clock. Keep a copy of today’s column, and tune in tomorrow to see how.

Mom needs to give up smoking for the health of her children Dr. Wallace: My younger sister (12) and I (17) live with our mom, who is a single mother.

We love her very, very much.

Every quality of hers is good, except for one. It’s the bad one that concerns me. My parents were divorced a year ago and the day our father moved out of the house, mom started smoking. Someone at her office told her that smoking would relieve the tensions she was suffering.

At first, mom was going outside to smoke. But once the weather started to get cooler she started lighting up in the house.

Now our house smells like a chimney. Even when she went outside to smoke, I encouraged her not to get addicted to cigarettes because I know that use of tobacco products can cause serious health problems – even death.

She refused to quit and said she needed the tobacco boost to keep her going.

But, now that she is filling our house with tobacco smoke most of the time, I’m afraid my little sister and I are going to get sick breathing the smoke. Since she probably won’t quit smoking, will you please inform her she could be causing health problems for

very concerned your cigarette habit could cause you serious health problems and that secondhand smoke also is causing concerns for the health of your children.

There is no question that secondhand smoke irritates the eyes and noses of sensitive nonsmokers, but now the evidence is mounting that it is much more serious than we realized.

Secondhand smoke also causes significant damage to the lungs of nonsmokers, scarring the small airways in the lungs. This reduces lung capacity, making it necessary to put more effort into breathing. Reduced lung capacity often is a forerunner of emphysema and other serious disorders. The latest studies show that nonsmoking family members of smokers have an increased risk of lung cancer.

A large case-control study by the American Cancer Society found that women with

husbands who smoked a pack or more a day at home had double the risk of lung cancer, compared with women married to nonsmokers.

There’s the evidence. Secondhand smoke is a serious health risk. Now it’s up to you to protect yourself and your children. Do your very best to give up your cigarette habit. It’s important that you and your children remain as healthy as possible. If it’s going to take a little extra time before you are tobacco-free, please eliminate smoking inside your home until then.

Your children are depending on you, because they need you and love you very much.

Dear Abby: A year ago, I ended a turbulent fiveyear relationship with my boyfriend, “Alex,” that resulted in a special-needs child. Alex is not living in reality when it comes to our daughter’s disabilities, and his family is not present in her life.

Our daughter, “Meghan,” spent months in the hospital before she was healthy enough to come home, and Alex’s family visited only a few times.

I have tried to resolve the issues with Alex’s family so our daughter can have a relationship with them, but it is still one-sided.

Meghan’s paternal family will send a present for her birthday or Christmas, but they spend no time with her.

They have other grandchildren in other states whom his mother drives hours to see, but she won’t drive five minutes to see my daughter.

I’d like to start rejecting the gifts they send Meghan with a note explaining why. I find it disturbing that they’ll spend money on my child, but are unwilling to spend time with her. I feel the gifts are a payoff. I don’t want Meghan to feel like the odd man out when she’s old enough to realize how she is treated compared to the other grandchildren.
