Fundraiser benefits store owner

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – As a longtime friend of Hill’s Country Store owner Pat Hill, Sugar Grove resident Tina Romas knows how much Hill gives to other people.

So when Romas heard that Hill had been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer (Hill also has cancer in her liver and bones), Romas knew she wanted to do something to help.

On Saturday, Romas held the Pink Out for Pat benefit at the Kaneville Community Center. All proceeds from the show, which featured Premier Designs jewelry, will benefit Hill.

“We’ll give back to her what she does for everyone else,” Romas said. “She has a good heart. She will do anything for

Attending the benefit was Ellie Strang, 18, of Kaneville, who graduated from Kaneland High School with Hill’s son, Tyler. Strang also took note of Pat Hill’s helping nature.

“She is always helping everybody else,” Strang said.

Along with being owner of

Hill’s Country Store, Hill also is Kaneville village president.

Hill stopped in during Saturday’s benefit.

“She is in good spirits,” Romas said.

Longtime Kaneville resident Penny Miller, who is a longtime customer of Hill’s Country Store, also attended

the benefit to support Hill. She said Hill would have done the same.

“If she hears somebody is in need, she’s part of it,” Miller said. “She’s just a very giving person.”

There has been an outpouring of support from the community for Hill. The Pink for Purple Walk for Pat will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 23. The walk will begin and end at Hill’s Country Store in Kaneville, nicknamed the “Purple Store.”

A raffle will be held as part of the event. The Give Back to Pat Benefit will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Fishermen’s Inn, 43W901 Main Street Road in Blackberry Township, near Elburn.

Pet show offers barks – but no bite – in St. Charles

For $1, he and other Chicago Pet Show attendees Sunday could smooch a pooch courtesy of the Adopt a Bull English Bulldog Rescue.

Baby, 7, awaited kisses in a Green Bay Packers shirt, while Shrek, 3, awaited smooches in Chicago Bears apparel.

Chase showed some love to Shrek. Afterward, the Cortland boy had one word for the kiss.

“Wet,” he said.

With rescue organizations promoting adoptions to live demonstrations, visitors to the Chicago Pet Show had many opportunities to interact with and see animals at the Kane County Fairgrounds over the weekend.

Johnny Sullivan, 14, even let a sun conure walk up his arm and around his shoulders, behind his neck. The St. Charles teen said he wished he could adopt the bird from the Greater Chicago Cage Bird Club, but he had allergies.

Club President Alice Blayney said some birds were adopted during the event, which saw “tremendous” crowds Saturday.

Although the club has existed for more than 80 years, this is the first year it has had a building for the shelter, Blayney said.

About 80 birds need homes, board member Janice Davis said.

Blayney said the shelter often gets birds when their owners have died and when kids go to college and can’t take the pets with them and their parents don’t want to care for them. Similarly, both Baby and Shrek were surrendered by their owners, Laura Wesseln of Adopt a Bull said, noting Shrek’s owner was being de-

ployed overseas.

“Both of them are great dogs,” she said.

Participating in the Chicago Pet Show helps the group with its suburban outreach, she said. She noted it also gives the group a chance to educate people about bulldogs, which can be adopted from them and not bought from pet stores.

Tree lighting kicks off season KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The traditional “Light Up The Night” tree lighting ceremony kicking off the holiday retail season is set for the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, at Geneva Commons, 602 Commons Drive, Geneva.

The event will feature Santa’s arrival at 5:30 p.m. to light the giant Christmas tree near the Bell Tower.

He will visit with children from 5:30 to 7 p.m., giving each child a gift who greets him.

Free horse-drawn carriage rides also will be available from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., when shoppers can board the eight-to-10passenger carriage that runs continuously around the perimeter of the 437,000 square-foot shopping center.

The celebration also marks the beginning of the Geneva Commons Holiday Gift with Purchase promotion. Shoppers who spend a total of $100 or more can redeem their store or restaurant receipts for gift items.

Santa’s schedule at Geneva Commons includes indoor and outdoor venues each Sunday from Nov. 30 through Dec. 21. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., he will stroll through the center handing out treats to kids. Then from 2 to 5 p.m., children can visit him in the Santa Station located near Learning Express Toys. Parents can bring cameras to record the moment.

The free horse-drawn carriage rides will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 14.

“We weren’t built for this team,” Wicinski said of his defense. “We were built more for spread teams. That’s kind of the way we’ve evolved over these past four or five years.

Missing [defensive end Jack McCloughan, broken hand], he’s a big part of our defense, so I thought Collin Lee stepped up and did a really great job, and especially against this team.

Collin Lee’s more of a spread type of an end, not a pound it type end, but he sure showed some nice speed.”

Lee, a junior who moved from safety to defensive end at the start of the season, acknowledged he’s “not the biggest guy out there, that’s for sure,” but still complemented pass-rushing dynamos Stephen Kemp and Matt Loberg with some timely plays.

“I was kind of nervous but I had a good week of practice, everyone had a good week of practice,” Lee said. “We knew they were going to run the ball a lot and we were well prepared.”

The Vikings led, 14-7, at halftime, after Santacaterina rolled to his left and hit a sliding Pace Temple for a 3-yard TD pass just 7 seconds before intermission. Wicinski said he’s not sure if he would have ordered a short field goal or attempted another play if the pass wasn’t completed, but he was relieved he didn’t have to decide.

Santacaterina (11 of 12 passing for 141 yards, three TD passes) added an 18-yard TD hookup with junior Jack Wassel that made it 20-7 with 5:07 left in the third quarter. Alex Browere’s PAT attempt ricocheted no good off the right post.

“The quarterback’s a heck of a player and [Temple] is a great receiver,” Hononegah coach Tim Sughroue said. “They can go to a lot of weapons so it’s hard to say you want to take

anything away, but [Temple] is a very good player, I’d say that, for sure. He was something we were concerned about, but hey, [Mike Landi] made some big catches today, [Jack Wassel] made that one catch down there, so hey, they’re spreading the wealth. They’ve got a lot of kids making plays. I thought we did a great job on run de-

fense.”

Vikings offensive tackle Loudon Vollbrecht saluted the Burgess Field crowd for its robust support as the Indians faltered in the closing minutes.

“It was great – it really shows what it means to this town, Geneva … everything that these fans do for us, we appreciate so much,” Vollbrecht said.

GENEVA – The Geneva football team went from having its IHSA Class 7A second-round playoff game well in hand to desperately fighting off hardcharging Rockton Hononegah in the closing minutes.

“That’s playoff football,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said.

The Vikings are in for more of that after thwarting Hononegah’s comeback for a 26-20 win Saturday at Burgess Field.

Geneva (10-1) advances to visit top-seeded Cary-Grove (110) in next week’s quarterfinal round.

Geneva led, 26-7, after quarterback Daniel Santacaterina hit fullback Max Woodworth on a 4-yard touchdown pass to open the fourth quarter. Considering the Wing-T Indians aren’t known as a quick-strike offense and didn’t even attempt a pass in the first half, the Vikings were in commanding position.

But Hononegah (9-2) showed an ability to mix the pass into its attack and scored on a 5-yard touchdown run from Samuel Ballano with 8:31 to go, making it 26-13. The Indians then recovered an onside kick and benefited from a pass interference call on fourth-and-18 to keep the ensuing drive going.

Indians quarterback Daytona Chandler fired a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tristyn Berg at the 3:51 mark of the fourth quarter, and the point after made it 26-20.

Geneva’s heartburn intensified – substantially – when the Indians’ Fernie Silva recovered a fumble at the Geneva 33-yard line with 3:06 to play. But the Indians’ bid to drive for the goahead score never gained traction, as a holding penalty and tackle for a loss by Chris Barger backed Hononegah up before Vikings senior Brock Perry intercepted a fourth down heave with 1:31 left.

The Vikings were able to extinguish the clock and celebrate their second home playoff win in as many weeks.

St. Charles North can’t corral Cary-Grove

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – CaryGrove’s triple-option offense ultimately exhausted the St. Charles North football team of its own alternatives Saturday.

North’s season-ending, 3514 loss to the Trojans in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs hinged on the very point of emphasis the North Stars internalized during the week.

Top-seeded Cary-Grove (110) often is imitated given the relative novelty of its attack.

As the North Stars (8-3) discovered, duplication remains another story.

“The speed, definitely,” North senior linebacker Brendan McCarthy said. “Because they run it every single day in practice, and it’s kind of

hard for scout [team], because they run a particular offense where it’s all downhill and it’s all full-tilt. Kind of just all-go.”

Cary-Grove, which hosts 10-1 Geneva in a quarterfinal next week, found its offensive groove early, rolling to touchdowns on each of its first three drives. The second was most methodical, covering 12 plays, 78 yards and taking 6:14 off the clock.

North, which rode its elite defense to a six-game winning streak entering the afternoon, shined in spots, but was unable to consistently slow the Trojans. Sophomore fullback Tyler Pennington capped each of the first three drives with a touchdown run.

His third score, from 22 yards out, immediately followed a holding penalty.

Pennington fumbled inside

the North 5-yard line, but the ball bounced right back into his breadbasket. He added a fourth touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

“The biggest thing with this offense is physicality. …

We’re physical in everything we do,” Trojans senior guard Michael Gomez said. “I believe we’re the hardest-working team in the state, and I think it translates. Because really, we’re undersized, but coach [Brad Seaburg] has really ingrained the physical toughness in us.”

With Gomez, Pennington and others also showing their snarl on the other side of the ball, the North Stars sputtered offensively, too.

North notched its initial first down of the game with 1:55 to go in the second quarter, and both of its touchdowns

came defensively – fumble returns from linebackers Tyler Mettetal (second quarter) and Jack Callaghan (fourth).

Mettetal perfectly anticipated a pitch from Cary-Grove quarterback Jason Gregoire and raced 35 yards to the end zone with 5:30 remaining before halftime.

“Oh, it felt like a turning point completely. It felt like we had a chance to just go out and win the game,” McCarthy said.

That’s as close as North came, however.

Trailing, 20-7, at halftime, North sent its initial kickoff out of bounds. Cary-Grove elected for a re-kick, and the Trojans eventually opened the third quarter at North’s 42-yard-line after a North Stars facemask penalty.

Sutherland scored on a 38yard run two plays later, punctuating a sequence North coach Rob Pomazak said “really kind of broke our backs.”

Although dual-threat quarterback Nathan Didier found openings in both the running and passing game, the Trojans “D” excelled behind its familiar cushion.

“It was just playing a great, sound game all around,” said Sutherland, also a linebacker.

“Getting some pressure on the quarterback. He’s pretty mobile. Getting some pressure and then just locking down their receivers.”

Didier connected with Blake Kastein for 15 yards on a fourth-and-goal from the 16 one drive later, as the team’s most productive offensive drive ended on the doorstep of the goal line.

Wheaton Academy steamrolls to state title

PEORIA – Geneva junior McKenzie Altmayer and St. Charles North freshman Audrey Ernst jockeyed for position in most of their overlapping races during the girls cross country season.

At Saturday’s Class 3A state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park, both runners emerged with the same accolades.

Altmayer (11th, 17:07) and Ernst (13th, 17:09) both earned all-state recognition by finishing in the top 25.

“McKenzie’s just a competitor,” Geneva coach Bob Thomson said. “She went out there and competed from the beginning of the race until the end.”

Added North Stars coach Shari Hayes about Ernst: “I think that the regionals, sectionals weren’t where she thought she should be, so going into the state meet she wasn’t running at the top of her game, so today she got back to running toward the front, which I thought was impressive.”

In the 3A boys race, Marmion senior Brady Bobbitt, a Batavia resident, was an all-stater, finishing 20th in 14:49.

Advancing together as team entries for the first time in school history, Batavia’s girls (11th place) and boys (22nd) formed a solid crimson and gold contingent. The girls finished with 304 points – three better than 12th-place Geneva – behind freshman Emma Stephens’ 36h-place run in 17:36.

Classmate Daphne Kolody (77th, 18:03) followed Stephens, while junior Dakota Roman (84th, 18:05) was close behind.

The Bulldogs relied on underclassmen throughout the fall and will look to parlay their success into bigger things next season.

Ryan Wieties (92nd, 15:21), David Morrison (119th, 15:30) and Shean Bastian (130th, 15:32) were the top three Batavia boys runners. St. Charles East finished one spot behind the Bulldogs in the team race, with Mark Sciurba (80th, 15:18), Jack Rzpecki (101st, 15:26) and

For the second straight day, the Warriors were able to emerge victorious in dominating fashion, defeating St. Joseph, 5-1, in Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A state championship match.

Wheaton Academy (25-1-1) won its first state championship in program history in the process, distancing the memories of the past two seasons when they settled for fourth in the state both times.

“That was the main drive, just that the last two years we couldn’t quite hold out so we knew that we only had one shot with this team, especially the seniors,” senior forward Reid Culberson said.

“We knew we had a good team so we really wanted to win this game and that’s what drove us.”

The Warriors never trailed in the match after going up early on a 9th minute strike by senior midfielder Lucas Hoepner, his first of two goals on the afternoon.

Hoepner’s shot inside the 18 hit the crossbar before careening back out to him, finishing the ball with his head for the 1-0 lead.

With the 3-1 lead heading into the half, the Warriors easily could have sat back and played it safe with a defensive formation for the final 40 minutes.

But facing a previously unbeaten St. Joe team that had trailed 2-0 at halftime in its semifinal matchup against St. Viator on Friday before coming back to win in a penalty shootout, Seager emphasized playing a complete game.

“We were up by two goals at halftime and knew that it’s going to take a full 80 to win the game,” Seager said. “We weren’t going to give up so we tried to do that and get another goal and another goal just to put it away and ultimately finish the game and finish on a strong note.”

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips are in their mid-70s and have health problems. My oldest niece, “Riley,” will graduate from high school next spring and is considering going to a college near them. My parents recently told me that my brother is suggesting Riley move in with them.

The girl has some behavioral issues and is in counseling. She’s not an easy, happy or normal kid.

My parents are extremely uncomfortable with the idea, but have not said anything to my brother. I think they are afraid of a fight or causing hurt feelings. He is in denial about his daughter’s problems.

I’m concerned about my parents. At their age, I don’t think it’s fair to expect them to have another teenager in their home, much less one with issues. Is it my place to say something, and if so, what do I say? – Looking Out for Mom and Dad Dear Looking Out: You should definitely say something, but not to your brother. Talk with your parents.

Remind them that if they’re not OK with the arrangement your brother has proposed, it’s their responsibility to make plain that because of their ages and their health problems they’ll be unable to accommodate his request.

Because it’s the truth, it shouldn’t cause an argument or hurt feelings.

Also, your brother will have plenty of advance notice that other living arrangements will have to be made for Riley.

Dear Abby: May I have some advice about a touchy subject? One of my boyfriend’s close friends is going through his third bout with cancer and the prognosis is not good.

He is married with a healthy 3-year-old son.

So imagine our surprise when his wife announced she’s pregnant.

This is a decision we do not support. I don’t know what they’re thinking, but if you are facing the reality that your spouse will not be around much longer, we don’t feel it is wise to bring another child into the world who will never know his or her father.

Some of her close friends want to throw her a “sprinkle,” and although I am only an acquaintance, I have been invited.

How do I handle this?

Should I attend and keep my thoughts to myself, decline and/or send a small gift in my absence? I have a hard time making small talk about subjects I don’t agree with.

Did I mention she does nothing but complain about how hard her life is now? I’m afraid if I go and get involved, I’ll be on the hook down the road when she wants to complain about how hard it is to raise two children alone. – Isn’t My Choice Dear Isn’t: Feeling as you do, decline the invitation. This woman needs friends around her during this painful and traumatic time, and you do not qualify.

To send a small gift would be both thoughtful and kind, because I am sure her life is extremely difficult now.

As to this couple having made a decision with which you do not agree, allow me to point out that not all pregnancies are planned, and this may be one of them.

Difficult deals give difficult decisions

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, an architect who was born in Germany but lived in the United States from 1944 until his death in 1969, said: “A chair is a very difficult object. A skyscraper is almost easier. That is why Chippendale is famous.”

Bridge players sit in chairs and face difficult objects – the deals. This one, from a social game, is particularly taxing. How should the auction proceed after South opens one diamond (do you agree?) and West passes?

Yes, South might open two clubs, but his hand is a tad shy in high-card terms.

First, North must decide how to respond. Most would bid one spade, but if a 4-4 fit does not exist, bidding two clubs would be better. Over one spade, South has no textbook rebid. Three diamonds is an underbid, and three no-trump (which shows a good long minor in a hand too strong for a three-diamond rebid) is unappealing with the low singleton club. My choice would be a twoheart reverse. It is not ideal, but at least it is forcing. Here, North would presumably rebid in notrump, and the hard part would be staying out of a slam.

If North responds two clubs, South can rebid a game-forcing three diamonds. North will continue with three spades, and South is again in a quandary.

I would continue with four diamonds, trusting that three no-trump is not the only making game. Against six diamonds or six no-trump, West must lead either major suit to disrupt declarer’s communications. Otherwise, declarer can establish dummy’s club suit and overtake his spade king with the ace to reach the dummy.
