Of the first-place award for best website, the judges wrote: “The KCC makes great use of a new, clean, friendly design. On the day of judging, the KCC had the

most local and most current news when compared with the other entries.”

Ashley’s first-place award for best business/financial/ consumer story, which was about baby boomers and finance, received praise as well.

“Well-done piece, nicely sourced,” the judges wrote.

“Very good job of putting faces to numbers and humanizing the issue.”

And of Kara’s first-place win for best technology/ medical story, which was about eating disorders, the judges wrote: “Nice, well-rounded package. Good use of voices, solid exploration of a timely topic and incorporation of statistics.”

Political pieces in county Halloween Hooligans fundraiser boosts charities, Batavia Arts Council newsletter questioned

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A Kane County newsletter that previously prompted an ethics complaint for promoting a political fundraiser recently has featured opinion pieces regarding Tuesday’s election – content some say has no business being in a government outlet.

“I think it is an outrageous use of public resources,” said Ken Shepro, chairman of the St. Charles Township Republican organization.

Kane County Connects – which has a website, an e-newsletter and a presence on social media – launched an opinion page Oct. 10. Since then, it has published submitted content advocating for and against a fire district referendum and Sheriff Pat Perez’s endorsement for Democratic sheriff candidate Willie Mayes.

Rick Nagel, a contract employee who runs Kane County Connects, said he intended to create a place for civil, civic community engagement.

With it starting during election season, he said, some of those opinions would be election-related.

He said there’s a difference between “government advocating for a particular person or political point of view and government providing people with an opportunity to speak in an open forum.”

Donald Craven, a Springfield attorney who represents Illinois media, said a prohibition in the election code says otherwise.

“It’s not appropriate to use public assets to advocate for political candidates or political referenda,” Craven said.

Kane County Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said he has been opposed to the concept of a government-run news outlet from the beginning, and he doesn’t agree with it offering a forum for political opinion.

“I think it’s totally inap-

propriate,” Donahue said.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the “letters to the editor” feature isn’t so much politically directed as it is a place for people to discuss issues that concern them, which includes fire service and public safety.

“Don’t you think the people in Elburn are very interested in what happens to their fire service?” he asked, referring to the referendum involving that district. “I think they are.”

Tony Hylton, a spokesperson for the Mayes-forsheriff campaign, provided a statement on behalf of the candidate: “We believe Kane County Connects newsletter is an extremely important vehicle to let all of the voters and Kane County be aware of both sides of an issue.”

Don Kramer, the Republican candidate for sheriff, disagreed.

“Kane County has an ethics ordinance that prohibits the use of public resources for political purposes,” he said in a statement. “How can voters be asked to elect my opponent to the highest

The costumed participants – eight dignitaries from Batavia – earned funds for their charity of choice as community members placed money on the Halloween getup they would like to see the dignitaries wear.

Voters could choose among three costumes per participant.

Dominic Cattero, manager of the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, said he didn’t know until Thursday whether he would be dressed as Shakespeare, Mozart or Olaf from the movie “Frozen.”

“My children are most happy I got Olaf,” he said, noting he has an 8-month-old, a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old.

Some of the money raised will support the amount of grants and scholarships the arts council can award to artists and art projects in the community.

Each participant also received a check for the charity of his or her choice. Charities included the Association for Individual Development, TriCity Family Services, the United Brachial Plexus Network and the North Aurora Mother’s Club.

The bugs are back in town GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Just in case you hadn’t noticed – the bugs are back in town.

Make that the ladybugs.

Or, to be more correct, the multicolored Asian lady beetles, Harmonia axyridis.

Pretty from a distance, yet teeming in numbers, stinky when disturbed and sometimes bitey, these imported insects ain’t no ladies. Or are they?

Perhaps ill-mannered by our human standards, the multicolored Asian lady beetle’s habits actually do make sense when taken in context.

Their peculiar smell is related to a defense behavior called reflex bleeding; they release a small amount of stinky fluid (toxic alkaloids) to deter predators. And their “bites” aren’t meant to be aggressive; they’re simply one way a MALB explores its environment. Lastly, their great numbers can be attributed to their reputation as a beneficial insect; in both their larval and adult stages, these insects consume large quantities of garden and crop pests.

Although various isolated introductions occurred in the late 1800s, the imported insect’s “official” history here in the United States dates to 1916, when the federal government released a shipment of beetles in California as part of an effort to control aphids and scale insects on nut trees.

Subsequent releases around the country, combined with assorted accidental introductions, have led to one undeni-

able fact: MALBs are here to stay.

If you’re reading this near a sunny window ledge, you probably don’t need me to tell you that.

According to Asian entomologists, MALBs are programmed to migrate toward “prominent, isolated objects on the horizon” as temperatures cool in the fall.

(Our native species head for the safety of loose bark and leaf litter.)

In the MALB’s homeland, those “prominent, isolated objects” typically are mountains and cliffs lined with cracks and crevices – excellent places to crawl in and take a long winter’s nap. But here, our “prominent, isolated objects” are houses, apartments and office buildings. And, unless you’re really good with a caulk gun, your “object” probably has at least a few cracks and crevices, especially around doors and windows.

You may have found you have more than a few multicolored visitors on your windows, curtains and walls.

Why have so many shown up this week? According to research conducted in Ohio, MALB migration as a rule begins the first day temperatures surpass 64 degrees Fahrenheit after a period of cooler, near-freezing temps. Last week’s overnight lows were in the 30s, with daytime highs in the 60s. Then, last Monday, we hit 77F – a temp the ladies found irresistible. At Hickory Knolls, we had MALBs finding their way inside in droves.

Curiously, they seem to like to congregate beneath a light fixture in the basement stairwell. Lights on, lights off – it doesn’t seem to matter to

Apparently that wall is the perfect “prominent, isolated object” they’ve been seeking, and their numbers have increased steadily as the week has gone on.

Their presence has given us a great chance to explore the species in great depth.

Here’s what we’ve been able to glean over the past few days: • Multicolored Asian lady beetles really do come in a multitude of colors. We have yellow ones, orange ones, red ones; some with many spots, some with none at all.

• The one trait they do share is the marking on the pronotum – the small shieldlike structure that partially covers the head and thorax.

It’s conveniently marked with an “M,” which makes for a great way to distinguish MALBs from some of our native ladies. (Note – the two-spotted lady beetle, Adalia bipunctata, has a similar,

M-shaped marking, but the center of its “face” is black, while the MALB’s is white.)

(Oh, and while you’d think two-spotted ladybugs would only have two spots, that number can range from zero to 10.)

(But I digress ... .)

• Grass spiders are not interested in eating them.

This last observation came on Thursday, when I thought I’d see if a male grass spider, who’s taken up residence inside an unused plastic dish in our workroom, might be interested in a lady beetle meal.

I dropped the insect into the spider’s web, and waited. Spider Man (yes, we checked; he’s clearly a male) scuttled out of his lair and headed toward the ladybug (which may or may not be female, since we aren’t sure how to tell). But then, a few millimeters away from his quarry, the spider stopped.

After a moment or two, he turned around and headed back to his hideout. The

MALB, meanwhile, walked across the non-sticky web and onto the floor; presumably s/he is back on the stairwell wall by now.

So, spiders-as-agents-ofMALB-control might not be a sound plan. Vacuums, however, are. If you find yourself with more beetles than you know what to do with, try sucking them up. But be prepared to dispose of the bag, or empty the receptacle, promptly, since the MALB’s chemical defense can be quite odiferous. Also be careful not to squish them as you’re cleaning, to avoid releasing the stink and stain on your walls and windowsills.

Are you, like me, wondering what the MALB’s effects on native ladybug species have been? It would appear that the diversity among our natives is decreasing. But research is ongoing, since it takes time to identify longterm trends.

One worthy effort is Cornell University’s Lost Ladybug Project, which relies on data submitted by citizen scientists around the country to track and monitor populations of native ladybug species.

Lauzen and Nagel, alleging the chairman’s political fundraiser was listed in the e-newsletter.

The complaint was referred to the state’s attorney’s office after ethics adviser Grant Wegner recused himself from reviewing the complaint. An outcome has yet to be announced.

Oberweis looking to unseat Durbin in U.S. Senate race Incumbent Dick Durbin wants another term in his U.S. Senate seat, and state. Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, wants to keep him out of it.

Oberweis has repeatedly criticized Durbin as a career politician and said that Durbin is no longer effective after 30plus years in Washington, D.C. The two recently have sparred back and forth in televised debates.

“He’s lost all touch and

communication with the people he’s supposed to represent here in Illinois,” Oberweis said of Durbin.

Oberweis was first elected to public office when he won the 25th State Senate District seat in the November 2012 general election. Oberweis ran for U.S. Senate in 2002 and 2004, but lost both times during the primary.

Durbin said he is running again to continue efforts to support the middle class and working families. He cites his ability to work across the aisle

LOCAL BRIEFS Geneva EMA seeks volunteers GENEVA – The Geneva Emergency Management Agency is seeking volunteers for severe weather spotting, traffic management, festival crowd control and other emergency-related tasks.

The agency assists the Geneva police and fire departments, as well as community organizations such as the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and Geneva Park District. People must be at least 18 years old, be a high school graduate

(or possess a GED), have a valid driver’s license, live within close proximity of Geneva and be able to pass an official interview and background check. Other expectations include attendance at GEMA’s monthly general planning and training meetings and volunteer support for a majority of the agency’s emergency call-outs and planned events.

He was born on March 31, 1918, in St. Charles, IL, the son of Jack and Rosa (Ottoni) Forni.

Louis served our country in the United States Army during WWII, from February 1941 to September 1945 in the Third Division under General Patton. He worked at Richardson Electronics in LaFox as a glass specialist and was a faithful member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva. Louis enjoyed playing cards, bocce ball and bowling. He was an avid reader and loved watching football, he was a lifelong loyal Bears fan. Louis was a wonderful, kind and loving man and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Selma (Noetzelman); two sons, Dr. Phillip (Vicki) Forni of Schaumburg, Robert (Jean) Forni of Spring Grove, IL; grandchildren, Laura (Chris) Heinl, Jason Forni; and great-grandchild, Kendall Heinl; sisters Ann Jaschob and Helen McDonald; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Elmer and Joseph Forni.

Funeral prayers will be held Monday, November 3, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. at Malone Funeral Home, 324 East State Street (Route 38), Geneva proceeding to St. Peter Catholic Church 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva for celebration of Mass at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will follow at River Hills Memorial Park, Batavia.

Madison Scout Cantrell. Scout was a beautiful, kind, caring, smart, athletic, creative 9 year old girl who loved life and laughter, and loving people and being loved.

She loved making people laugh with her infectious smile and one of a kind laugh that could brighten even the darkest day.

She was a friend to everyone and loved singing and dancing with her friends at recess and playing four square with the best of them. She was a smart and creative student at Wasco Elementary whose imagination and thirst for learning were limitless.

Her dream, when she graduated high school, was to travel to Machu Picchu and explore the ancient civilizations.

She was a competitive swimmer on the St. Charles Swim Team and had just swam this past weekend, lifetime best swims in her events, especially in her butterfly which she was naturally gifted at. Her dream was to be an Olympic Swimmer on her days off from being a veterinarian.

She loved animals, any kind of animal, and loved researching them and taking care of them, especially her cat, Chessie, who was her constant companion at home. Her dream was to go to Duke University and study to become a veterinarian so she could help sick animals. A fact evidenced by the amount of containers housing rescued bugs and animals surrounding her house that she personally took care of.

She loved SpongeBob and Finding Nemo and Frozen and could quote and sing from them on cue. She played viola and recorder and loving playing duets with her sister Katie, who played cello.

She was creative and thoughtful and imaginative and loved crafting and drawing and making up stories and inventing games and making iPad videos. She loved collecting anything and everything, from Beanie Babies to rocks to pine cones to charms. She had recently founded “Scout’s Charm Boutique” and loved making individualized charm bracelets for her friends, each one with one special charm that said “Made with Love” The most important thing in Scout’s life, however, was her family. And in her family, there was no one she loved more than her big sister Katie. They were together always, and in fact, they were almost a one word entity,

“KatieandScout”. Scout was Katie’s best friend and most loyal champion and favorite playmate, and cared about Katie more than she cared about herself. And the best part was that Katie felt the exact same. The bond they shared was indescribable and together they are the lights of their parents’ eyes. She was the center of the family and will be so forever.

Scout is survived by her parents, Tony and Felicity Cantrell; by her sister, Katie; her grandparents, Stephen and Sharon Lohm of Ringwood, NJ; her three half brothers, Daniel, Matthew, and Jacob Cantrell of Rock Springs, Wyoming; her cats, Chessie and Millie; countless friends, classmates, and teammates.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Edna and Buford Cantrell; her paternal great grandparents, Carl and Deckie Cantrell; and her half brother, Christian Cantrell.

She passed away from complications from asthma.

True to Scout’s compassionate soul, her final gift on this earth was a donation to Gift of Hope to help others in need. She left this earth in peace, with dignity, grace, and respect, being held lovingly by her Father, Mother, and Sister.

Visitation will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles. Celebration of Life Service will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 2, 2014, at Christ Community Church, St. Charles.

RICHARD HERRA Born: May 1, 1941 Died: Oct. 29, 2014

He was a life-time member of the St. Charles Sportsman’s Club, and a faithful member of the Fox Valley Christian Church. Rich was also a proud member of the N.R.A. Rich’s strength was legendary, and more importantly, true. He would hold the end of a 16 pound sledge hammer with one hand, and gently scratch the end of his nose as easy as holding a pencil.

He also was an accomplished marksman, who loved to shoot and make new friends at every club. As a dedicated member of the Elburn Fire Department, Rich felt privileged each and every time he was able to drive the antique Model-A firetruck in the Elburn Days Parade, and other festive occasions. He was also a practical man, picking the date of his marriage to coincide with deer hunting season. Although, Rich had a look that could stop you in your tracks, but there was no one who enjoyed a practical joke or shared an easy laugh like Rich. He once tied the shoes of a whole volleyball team together in intricate knots, while they were playing a game only to return to the bench to see Rich’s handiwork.

He also was a favorite dinner companion every Friday night, taking out friends and neighbors. It was only coincidence that most of them were of the female persuasion, jokingly referred to as his “harem”. Some of his favorite spots were as far as 100 miles away.

Rich was a family man through and through, prizing them above all else, but he always had a special place in his heart for his grandson, R.J. No one can fill his shoes, nor live up to the man who lived his life as a “gentle giant”, but we can admire the footsteps he left for us to follow, and never forget the memories he left behind.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; two children, Richard (Kandy) Herra and their son, R.J. and Rhonda (Mike Fung) Herra; four siblings, D. Larry (Maxine) Herra, Leroy(Carol) Herra, Dean Herra and Darlene (Terry) Terrill; one brother-in-law, Glenn (Margie) Fulk; two sisters-in-law, Janet Herra and Ruth Fulk; several nieces, nephews, a host of “shooting buddies” and a countryside filled with friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary; two sisters, Marie Fraunberg, and Janet

who passed away in infancy; his brother, Jack Herra; two brothers-in law, Jim Fraunberg and Howard Fulk; and last but never least, his favorite hunting dogs, Lady and Diamond, who were faithful hunting buddies till the end.

Visitation will be Monday, November3, 2014, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Fox Valley Christian Church, 40W150 Main St. Rd., Batavia, IL. A funeral to celebrate his life will be at 10:00 a.m., with a time of visitation from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m., Tuesday, November 4, also at the church. Pastor Dan Fields and Pastor Josh LaGrange will officiate, with interment following at Blackberry Township Cemetery, Elburn.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Rich’s name to benefit his favorite charities.

Richard “Rich” Herra, age 73, of Elburn, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, October 29, 2014, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family.

A big man with an even bigger heart, leaves this world without a chance to say goodbye, but leaves a legacy of memories to balm our grieving hearts.

He was born May 1, 1941, the son of George and Mary (Kessel) Herra, in Geneva, IL. Rich grew up in Elburn and attended local schools, while helping out at the family grocer on Main St. in Elburn. He was “hired out” on occasion to local farmers, helping them in the fields,season after season. He was so popular, farmers would put in their reservations for “the tall son” when he was busy. He was one of the first classes to attend Kaneland High

School. Before he graduated with the class of 1961, Rich was a captain of the football team, inspiring all the “grid-iron greats” to follow in his footsteps, generations later.

August 3, 1964, was a day to live in infamy, at least for Rich, because that was the fateful day he was introduced to Mary Fulk. They soon fell in love and the rest was history. Their two hearts became one on November 21, 1965. They began their new life together in Aurora for a time, before coming back home to Elburn in 1968, where they raised a growing family. They were blessed with two children, Richard and Rhonda.

Almost 49 years of marriage brought millions of both laughter and tears, but one thing was for sure, they were unforgettable.

Rich had a history of working in and for his community. He worked as a part time police officer for ten years, and spent 36 years as a volunteer fireman. H & L Altepeter operated in Lily Lake, but Rich and his brother, Jack, had the opportunity to buy the business and renamed it J & R Herra Inc. After a lifetime filled with a work ethic that was second to none, Rich put down his tools and retired in

It’s about kids in referendum for Batavia On Tuesday, Batavians will have the opportunity to vote on a referendum to borrow $15 million to pay for certain capital improvement projects. Among these proposed projects is $7.5 million for the Batavia High School athletic field improvements. Interest over the 20-year term of the bonds could be about $7 million, perhaps higher. The goal of the proposed improvements is to bring some of our athletic teams and clubs back to the BHS campus for practices and events.

I agree with the pro-referendum crowd in that it really is about the kids. For example, I am going to use this issue to teach my kids to not spend money they don’t have. Given the district’s current capital improvements

budget, budget surplus and anticipated outlet mall expansion revenue, I think the entire project list of about $32 million could be completed in about nine years, which is around the same time I think that it could be completed if we borrowed $15 million up front. However, if we borrow the funds, we will still be paying for years after project completion! The difference is that, if we don’t borrow, we may have to wait a few years for the athletic field improvements to be completed in their entirety. Kids, sometimes it pays to delay gratification.

I am also going to use this issue to teach my kids that they need to evaluate the implications of their decisions. In 2007, Batavians approved a $75 million BHS expansion referendum. Ath-

about trade-offs. This year, the school district began to receive $6 million in annual outlet mall revenue. Now they are asking us to borrow $15 million because the board chose to allocate these funds toward other areas. Who are the adults in the room when it comes to capital allocation at the school district? Kids, life is full of choices, and you can’t have it all.

If it really is about the kids, why can’t we hire additional teachers instead of spending $350,000 or more on annual interest payments? Rather than paying interest to a bank or investors, the district can hire at least four more teachers who can relieve the pressure on our already overcrowded classrooms. I care about our kids, and I want them to learn

valuable skills like math and science so they can help America to continue to thrive.

A “no” vote on Tuesday’s referendum doesn’t mean that you dislike children as some groups may insinuate. By voting “no” to the referendum you are teaching our children responsibility. Also, a “no” vote does not mean that you are against bringing our kids back to the BHS campus; it simply means that you disagree with the proposed funding mechanism. By voting “no” you are telling Batavia’s leaders that you are not going to stand for irresponsible behavior any more.

Have your voice heard On Tuesday, Kane County residents will head to polling places to cast votes that will make a significant impact on their lives. Voters will choose a candidate to represent the state in the U.S. senate. They’ll vote on U.S. congressmen.

They will select state leaders – a governor, a secretary of state, an attorney general, a comptroller and a treasurer.

Closer to home, they’ll choose who becomes Kane County’s next sheriff. Voters will make decisions on state representatives. Some will have a choice between candidates vying to serve on the Kane County Board.

Voters who reside in Batavia School District 101 will decide on a $15 million referendum. Some voters who reside in the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District will be asked whether they want to disconnect and join the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

These are big issues, and if you are a registered voter, you should have your voice heard. You shouldn’t want to be left out of the discussion. It is one of the most important things you can do. If you don’t think you know enough about the candidates or the issues in the election, we have a great solution. Didier takes over at QB midseason as North Stars roll into playoffs

T. CHARLES – Nathan Didier and Kyle Novotney still look in the other’s direction before St. Charles North’s offensive snaps. That hasn’t changed throughout the football season.

Both players’ positions as they fix their respective gazes are different. Didier shifted from wide receiver to quarterback during a Week 4 loss to Geneva. Novotney made the opposite move.

The change helped fuel North’s march to the program’s first playoff berth since 2009, a run the North Stars hope to sustain past tonight’s first-round IHSA Class 7A playoff visit to Rolling Meadows.

“Both of us are good athletes, and the coaches saw in us that they could use us in multiple ways,” Didier said.

“They just felt the switch was best for the team, and I think Kyle’s really produced as a receiver, and I feel really comfortable at the quarterback position.”

Novotney, a 6-foot, 170-pound junior who quarterbacked the sophomore team in 2013, opened 2014 at the same position, offering plenty of athleticism for North’s spreadread-option playbook. Didier, a 6-foot, 175-pound senior, flanked him at receiver.

Both players paid dividends in a Week 1 win against Elk Grove, with Didier returning the season’s opening kickoff for a touchdown and

understanding about the situation that awaited them.

Whichever athlete didn’t win the quarterback job would play receiver, and the roles certainly could change.

“Whatever benefits the team, that’s what fits right now,” Novotney said. “I played quarterback, so I know the routes better, so the transition wasn’t that hard because I knew where to be at that time.”

Didier, also an effective runner who hovered around a 6-yards-a-carry average during the regular season, can attest.

His self-confidence and comfort with the offense has helped the North Stars take off, scoring 56, 44, 42 and 41 points during its current fourgame winning streak.

The wind, however, soon became the Cadets’ nemesis. A delay of game penalty – a bugaboo for Marmion at a couple key junctures – backed the Cadets up, and Hoeft ended up needing to boot a 36-yard field goal into the wind for the win. It fell well short, and DeKalb was one knee away from its first playoff win since 1989.

Hoeft, a sophomore, had kicked well for the Cadets this season.

“I had a lot of faith in him,” Glasgow said. “What I was mad about was we couldn’t get it closer for him. I think we had a delay of game penalty, and then we just didn’t have enough time.”

DeKalb advances to a second-round game next week at Hinsdale South.

“That whole second half we just kind of imploded a little bit,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “Luckily, we got that score that we did. But you know what, [Marmion] came out ready to play [in the second half] and we gave them every opportunity to win the football game, and fortunately for us, we just held on.”

The Cadets were lucky to trail only 14-0 at halftime after an offensive penalty drained the final seconds of the half after a Barbs reception down to the Marmion 1.

Both first half TDs for the Barbs came early as DeKalb scored on each of its first two possessions, the first on a

7-yard touchdown run from Eriq Torrey and the second a 30-yard TD pass from Derek Kyler to a wide-open Rudy Lopez on a fourth-and-5 play.

The dominant pregame storyline was the health of Barbs running back and Illinois recruit Dre Brown, and Brown hurt the Cadets with 169 rushing yards on 28 carries. But the Cadets’ defense stiffened considerably as the game wore on.

“I think we played like every down was our last,” Marmion linebacker Kyle Jordan said. “I know I did. I think we desired it. We saw what was going wrong on those first two drives and we picked it up.”

Glasgow (10 carries for 58 yards) became a potent complement to bruising fullback Lucas Warren (11 carries for 63 yards) in the second half. A DeKalb resident, Glasgow lives about a mile from the Barbs’ stadium and knows a handful of DeKalb players well.

“There was some jawing … just comments like ‘You’re locked down,’ ” Glasgow said. “ … That was in the first half and obviously I didn’t have any impact in the first half, I felt. I came out in the second half and obviously playing against people I know and the team is down and I’m a senior and I’m a captain, and I needed to make a play. I felt I made one or two plays that put the team in good position.”

DeKALB – A dizzying late-game surge by the Marmion football team ended with another case of postseason heartburn.

For the second straight season, the Cadets bowed out of the IHSA Class 6A playoffs with a 21-20 defeat, this time to DeKalb in a first-round thriller.

A failed 2-point conversion try and a missed field goal – all in the last minute – derailed an inspired, late-game push for Marmion.

“We had a chance to win it twice,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “Not too many people get that.”

DeKalb (9-1) was in commanding position after scoring a touchdown to go ahead, 21-7, with 7:26 to play in the fourth quarter – especially considering Marmion’s game-long struggles throwing the football.

But Cadets quarterback John Tate scrambled for a TD on fourth-and-goal from the DeKalb 7-yard line with 3:19 to play, and Connor Hoeft’s PAT cut the Barbs’ lead to 21-14.

That’s when the game turned screwy.

Marmion defensive lineman Luke Juriga recovered a fumble at DeKalb’s 23yard line with 1:49 to play, and Tate soon ran for a first down but was knocked out of the game on the play, on which a personal foul was called on the Barbs.

Tate already was Marmion’s backup QB – Rusty Joyce was unavailable after an injury last week against Montini – meaning running back Jordan Glasgow’s insertion at QB in crunch time was an emergency maneuver.

Yet Glasgow promptly hit paydirt on a 5-yard keeper with 50 seconds to play, slicing the deficit to 21-20.

Thorpe opted to attempt a two-point conversion and doubled down on the decision despite a five-yard penalty, a move he second-guessed afterward.

Glasgow’s attempted keeper was stopped well short of a go-ahead score.

“I’m not one to go for overtime – we’re going to win it now,” Thorpe said.

“But we should have kicked that [PAT] after the 5-yard penalty.”

Marmion (6-4) still wasn’t out of late-game magic as Glasgow pounced on Hoeft’s onside kick, supplying the Cadets possession at DeKalb’s 42-yard line. Glasgow then threw a left-handed duck into the wind that Nathan Traxler camped under for a 27-yard gain to DeKalb’s 15.

“That was not a good throw whatsoever,” Glasgow said with a laugh. “I saw it go up and then I think it completely stopped and went straight down. Thank God for the wind, that’s all I have to say.”

The Warriors, despite having to shoot into the wind, scored five first half goals in route to a 7-0 win over the Blue Thunder to clinch their third sectional title in a row.

Wheaton advances to Tuesday’s Romeoville Supersectional at Lewis University and will play the winner of today’s Peoria Notre Dame Sectional championship between PND and Dunlap.

The Warriors (22-1-1) wasted

no time putting the ball into the net, scoring at the 38:54 mark of the first half.

Belvidere (13-9-1) defenders were trying to clear the ball on the right side of the net, when it was kicked to the left side of the goal to Wheaton’s Lucas Hoepner . The senior midfielder knocked it in.

“We did a nice job coming out of the gate tonight and scoring in the first two minutes even though we were going into the wind,” said Warriors coach Jeff Brooke.

“We took the wind first trying to get some pressure on them but that first goal took a little wind out of us,” Belvidere coach Rick Mateus said. “They are just a quick, fast team and it’s tough to comeback on team like them – they don’t give up

with wind or against the wind.”

Hoepner scored his second goal of the match six minutes later on a shot in front of the net after a cross from Josh Austriaco.

Ty Seager scored two of his three goals in the first half. The second first-half score came on a penalty kick.

“I drew the PK down the

right side coming in. Their goalkeeper guessed the right side and the ball bounced off of him,” Seager said. “I got the rebound, focused and finished it.”

Luis Rocha scored the Warriors’ final goal of the first 40 minutes off a corner kick by Jacob Kapitaniuk.

“I am proud of their commitment to possession. I was proud of our hunger as soon as the whistle blew,” Brooke said.

“I think that those two things were a difference-maker for us.

Tonight, we had a lot of finishing. I thought we were real efficient early.”

Seager’s third goal started Wheaton’s scoring in the second half. Rocha scored the team’s final point.

The Warriors’ defense shut down Belvidere’s offense.

“We didn’t do a good job of supporting our forwards,” Maetus said. “Every time [forwards] Luis [Garcia] or Nick [Ramirez] would get the ball, it would be the two of them against five or six of their guys.”

“Our defense has been great all year,” said Warrior goalkeeper Drew Sezonov. “The back fours have been amazing.”

“It was cold, but we knew it was going to be cold coming in and so I was mentally preparing all day for it,” said Sezonov who had to spend the first half of the game facing the wind.

Wheaton’s only loss was to Morton in a semifinal of the Pepsi Showdown in September.

Batavia battled the Warriors, who finished fourth in last year’s state tournament, to a 1-1 tie earlier this month.

Plenty of help for Larson for Batavia boys soccer PREP ZONE Jay Schwab As brilliantly as senior Ian Larson has played this season for the Batavia boys soccer team, the Bulldogs wouldn’t be playing into November if they were a one-man show.

That became especially evident in Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A Bolingbrook Sectional semifinal win against Benet, in which Larson didn’t score, for a change, but the Bulldogs won, 3-1.

That win advanced second-seeded Batavia to this afternoon’s sectional championship match against No. 4 Naperville North.

Opponents naturally are keeping close tabs on Larson, a Duquesne recruit, which makes it crucial for the Bulldogs to respond exactly how they did against Benet.

“On the flip side, I think we’ve got a pretty good overall team, so you take Ian away, you’ve got someone like Kevin Collins who stepped up and scored two goals for us and was pretty instrumental in the game, and someone like

Batavia fell to Naperville North, 2-1, early during the regular season, but that provides only minimal context for today’s showdown.

“That was our first game of a four games in three days stretch so I liberally subbed, and it was 2-1, so I think we can do some things a little differently,” Gianfrancesco said.

“We will do some things a little differently. We’re aware of what they have. They’re strong, they’re big, they’re athletic, they’re fast, but I think we’ll be able to hang with

The Bulldogs make it their mission each time out to score three goals, considering that is a magic number that all but guarantees victory.

They’re confident in that calculation because they’ve also played well defensively despite missing standout left back Nathan Carey for the past month as he deals with a concussion for the second straight season.

In Carey’s absence, Gianfrancesco said senior Mason Parlatore has filled in ably, and Gianfrancesco credited

the communication of central defender Joe Jorgensen and others around Parlatore with helping smooth the transition.

The Bulldogs are on the verge of a historic push.

Gianfrancesco said he thinks 1995 is the last year the Bulldogs won a sectional championship.

While many would-be Batavia supporters today will be siphoned off by the Bulldogs’ simultaneous home football playoff game against Mt. Carmel, a big-game atmosphere nonetheless will be in the frosty air at Bolingbrook.

Gianfrancesco said he’s not concerned about anxiety seeping into the team’s psyche as the stakes continue to rise.

“Every game has been a big game this year,” Gianfrancesco said. “That’s the sense of urgency we put in those guys.

We have a lot of seniors, and that leadership we have kind of passed on to those guys … and they’ve taken it and [passed it on to their teammates].”

Courter commits: Geneva girls volleyball senior middle hitter Maddie Courter has committed to play collegiately at Division III-Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

A blocking stalwart for the Vikings, the 6-foot Courter helped Geneva to its second straight regional title Thursday as the Vikings topped Naperville North. The Vikings will face top-seeded Benet in Tuesday’s Bartlett Sectional semifinal.

What will you take away from this season?

It was a perfect senior season. … We started off a little slow, and I think that’s why our seed was so low, and we put ourselves in this position.

But I’m really proud of how we picked it up midseason and kind of fought. I couldn’t have been happier with how we’ve been playing with the Minooka Tournament, and our win against [St. Charles] East and how we fought and we won [a share of] conference. It was the perfect senior season.

How was it to have so many offensive weapons this season?

Oh, I love being able to set so many [teammates].

And that’s what I love about being a setter, especially being a setter on this team. I have so many [NCAA Division I] commits, and I have so many girls, young and old, that I can set. offense, and that makes it easy on me, too. Because I have so many options. It’s not just one hitter. At any given night, anyone can show up and play really well, so that makes it easier on me as a setter.

You mentioned the D-I talent.

Are you looking to play collegiately?

No, I am not. I decided, I think last year, that I was going to go to a big school and I’m going to focus on my studies. Because that’s something I’ve realized I want to focus on, and I’m kind of closing that chapter in my life of volleyball. Even though it will always be part of my life, I’ll still probably play club and intramurals and stuff, but I do not have a place to play, no.

Not yet. Hopefully, either UCLA or University of Miami or [Illinois]. So, all the [applications] are done. I’ve just got to wait until I get something.

Is Ryan still involved in men’s volleyball?

No. He’s doing club and stuff and just playing pickup games at Vanderbilt, but he’s not playing anywhere [on scholarship].

St. Charles North senior Taryn Dal Degan is setting a life course without competitive volleyball after high school. The reality left her more nostalgic than usual after Thursday’s season-ending loss to Benet in the Class 4A Neuqua Valley Regional final.

Dal Degan, one of North’s setters during a 27-10 season, still plans to be active on the intramural level – much like her older brother, Ryan – but otherwise wants to focus on studying physical therapy at a college to be determined.

There is plenty to debate about in the race to become Illinois governor in the election Tuesday. That’s why I asked the two candidates, Democratic incumbent Pat Quinn and his Republican challenger, Bruce Rauner, on the issues facing Illinois outdoorsmen.

Below are those of questions, which were presented to both candidates in written form and answered in written form, as well. The candidates’ answers have not been edited.

Sarley: Are you a hunter?

Are you a fisherman? Do you participate in any of the shooting sports? Are there any other areas of outdoor recreation you enjoy participating in?

Quinn: I enjoy the outdoors,

Sarley: What is your vision for the future of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources?

Quinn: We need a strong

Sarley: It seems that Illinois outdoorspeople tend to vacation more in Wisconsin, Michigan and other neighboring states than staying at home in Illinois.

What can your administration do to reverse that practice?

Quinn: We must reinvest in our state parks system, and create more outdoor recreation opportunities for both traditional hunters and fishermen, as well as new and growing groups of users that may want a different experience. We have launched a new “State Parks Great Parks” ini-

The deer-vehicle accident statistics used by biologists are provided by law enforcement and the Department of Transportation, not the insurance industry.

DNR also uses other information when appropriate to determine the status of the deer herd.

Rauner: Deer/vehicle collision data can be an important resource, but they shouldn’t be the sole metric we use when determining target population numbers for whitetail deer. We need to ensure that we bring in all stakeholders, including the hunting community, to develop target population numbers that are data-driven and help address populations in a common-sense manner.

Sarley: Do you think the Illinois Conservation Foundation should continue as an entity, and what do you think it can do to be more effective in the future?

Quinn: The Illinois Conservation Foundation serves an important role in supporting the agency and providing funding sources for programming. The board and staff must work to rebuild its fundraising capacity and improve its communications capabilities. There is great work being done at the ICF, and it needs to be increased to scale.

Rauner: We need to encourage more private involvement in conservation programs, and entities like the Illinois Conservation Foundation can help achieve that goal. Building stronger public-private partnerships can increase the quality and number of education and conservation initiatives. Government can’t be the solution to all of our challenges. As your governor, I will build meaningful coalitions that will encourage real stakeholder involvement in order to turn our state around.

Sarley: Do you feel that statistics reflecting the number of car/whitetail deer encounters that are provided by the insurance industry should be used in the compilation of target population numbers for whitetail deer in Illinois counties?

Quinn: Biologists around the country use deer collisions in scientific models to show population trends.

and healthy department to manage and protect our natural resources and outdoor heritage for future generations. I appointed natural resource professionals to run the agency and use science to guide policy decisions. My vision for the future focuses on providing adequate public recreational access, so that all Illinois citizens can enjoy the outdoors, and that we should “leave no child inside.” It is important to include children and families in our education and outreach efforts, so they can understand, enjoy and protect these things for the future.

Sportsmen support the conservation efforts at DNR by supporting fish and wildlife, lands management and law enforcement, but there are many other parts of the agency that support the overall mission that require funding, as well. We need to continue to work on sustainable funding, because when all the components of the agency are working well, we can provide a better environment for all of Illinois. This includes the museums, water resources, planning and regulatory functions. Areas that we will work to improve are customer service, communications and utilizing technology to streamline our permitting processes.

I also would add that we should do more to work with private landowners on conservation. Ninety-six percent of the state is privately held, and we need to devote more resources, when the agency is healthier, to provide habitat and conservation cover.

Rauner: My vision for the department is the same for all of our government agencies. We need responsive leaders who serve the public interest and not themselves.

As an avid outdoorsman, I understand the importance of having professionals, and not political cronies, run IDNR. If we want to conserve and protect our state’s resources for future generations, we need to implement thoughtful and common-sense policies that will leave a positive legacy for years to come.

What a week. I could have used an extra day. Add to that the fact that it seems like the people I live with would rather I weren’t – well, except for the Big Red Dog, who’s always happy to see me, and, we have ourselves a winner.

Weeks like this, lemme tell ya, Mr. Jake’s company is no small thing.

“Mom, don’t pat my back,” I heard from one kid.

“Why’d you ask a question you knew the answer to?” was boldly issued from another, though not to be outdone by my personal favorite, the good old, “Leave me alone.”

Oh, OK. That one makes me wince.

My response – after I pick myself back up off the floor and prop myself up with half-truths – is that she’s just trying to grow up, he’s just trying to be autonomous and not need my support, and so-and-so is just having a bad day, again?

Sometimes there really is no discernible reason why the people we live with, myself included, choose to be unkind.

At times like these I consider the appeal of saying, “Kiss my fat, you know, mom jeans,” but usually don’t.

After all, what’s the use in adding fuel to the fire? Besides, as the saying goes, that (some) “hurt people hurt people.”

There are those transient hurts and then there are those chronic ones that can inspire such a state, but either way,

All of which is tougher to take when battling a pesky leaf-mold allergy, which my girl and I have been doing all week, and which is made ever more vexing by the effects of the city’s Snuffleupagus truck, which kicks up billions of invisible, potent mold spores as it shuffles down side streets, clouds of leaf mulch billowing in its wake. (You know that leaf-picker-upper thing with the funny long hose? It always reminds me of the long nose of that endearing “Sesame Street” character, Mr. Snuffleupagus.

Yes, I’m quite sure the city calls it something else, but I like my name for it.)

It’s funny how such a sight, made magic when infused with Indian-summer sunlight, can make me smile and reach for the tissues, all at once. (But

Here are some commonly asked questions and some tips and tricks to help your perennials survive our interesting winters.

Question: Do I need to cut down my fountain grass or coneflowers?

Jody Lay: That is a matter of preference. Coneflowers are naturally “designed” to hold the weight of a finch so they can pick out the seeds and feed all winter. And fountain grass

really, I wonder, wouldn’t some kind engineer like to set about the task of redesigning the Snuffy truck so that billowing thing doesn’t happen? Seriously, I’m betting sales of Claritin, Allegra and neti pots shot up exponentially in the Fox Valley this week – but I digress.)

But I DIGRESS! Ha! I did it! Made myself laugh, that is, for perhaps what may be the first time all week. Boy, that felt good. See, I was reminded of a “Sound Off” piece published in the Kane County Chronicle several weeks ago, wherein a phone message to the newspaper about my tendency to digress, of all things, was published: “This is in regards to Jennifer DuBose, who writes ‘Tales From the Motherhood.’ I enjoy her column, and I read it every week. However, she’s got to stop using the phrase, ‘but I digress.’ Maybe you can pick up a thesaurus. There are a lot of other words she can use. This gets redundant.”

I got such a kick out of reading this, for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that someone apparently reads my column AND (mostly) enjoys it. (Thank you!) You’ll notice that I’ve narrowly avoided calling attention to having digressed, in recent weeks, but there it is, like a bad penny, showing up again.

But that’s me. I digress. It’s what I do, and it’s what I call it, too. Perhaps,

when the kids have flown the coop and the humbling and hilarious stuff of life with my dear children gives way to other things, and if the good folks at the Chronicle see fit to tolerate any more of my musings, I’ll rename my column and call it that. You know, “I digress.” And it’s a good thing, too, since it gets me through weeks like this one.

Her fever meant that my girl would miss a soccer game and three tests at school (which somehow she’ll need to make up). While she worried I patted her back (can’t help it, sorry), and told her it’d all work out, one way or another.

It’s funny, isn’t it? How we so easily can issue reassurances to our kids with such wisdom, such truths, while struggling, sometimes, to believe them to be true for ourselves? But I must. After all, experience shows me that other days – and weeks – won’t be so joyless.

Besides, Facebook said so, too, so it must be true.

Here’s a little something that surfaced again, this week, which, if I’m honest, didn’t hurt to hear again: “Not to spoil the ending for you, but everything is going to be OK.” Cool. That’s a tall order, in a big-picture, existential kind of way, but I’m counting on it.

Tips, tricks to helping perennials survive winter

LEARNING TO GROW Jody Lay is considered by some to be a winter-interest plant. Leaving it could provide shelter for wildlife but I cut mine down to save time in the spring.

Q: If I leave all of my dead flowers will something bad happen?

Lay: That is also a matter of opinion. Some plants go to seed after flowering. Some destructive insects lay eggs in your plant’s leaves, and all of the debris you leave provides shelter for the eggs and larvae. Specifically, irises should be trimmed down and

all of the debris cleared away both in the fall and spring to ensure that iris borers cannot get to your tubers. Likewise, I don’t compost the debris so all of the borers’ eggs are as far from my irises as possible.

Q: How do I know when to trim my bushes?

Lay: The fall is a good time to gently reshape unruly bushes, but generally speaking anything that blooms in the spring or early summer should not be trimmed in the fall. Mophead and macrophylla-type hydrangeas form their buds for the following year in the fall, which is why they need so much protection through the winter. Many shrubs and bushes, such as ninebarks, viburnums and

paniculata hydrangeas, can stand a regenerating trim to promote new growth. If you prune these too early, the bush may send out new shoots that are easily damaged by frost, so be sure to prune later in fall or once the bush is dormant – after the leaves have dropped – so you can easily see the shape.

Q: Is there anything I can do now to prevent weeds from coming back next year?

Lay: Your best bet is to pull them before they go to seed or establish a tough root system. Some people use commercial brands of weed and feed lawn treatments or topical weed killers, especially for those tough guys in between cracks and bricks.

Q: What should I leave until spring to provide food or protection for birds?

Lay: Everything! Everything you leave in your yard will be used as shelter or food, whether it’s berries or seeds. I planted some beautiful winter coral berries (Symphocarpis) to feed the birds and provide color against the white snow.

But remember that you may be attracting unwanted guests.

Even in downtown Batavia, I have deer coming to my yard to “trim” my bushes, and rodents love all of the shelter we leave in the yard.

ADVICE Second job is good money, but bad way to live Dear Abby: For the past year and a half, I have worked a full-time and a part-time job while attending school. I recently graduated from college and now have a career that has put me into a better financial position.

My problem is, I’m still working my part-time job. My boyfriend, “Jared,” and I get into arguments over whether or not I should keep it.

I enjoy the extra cash, but I’m starting to feel like life is passing me by because I’m working seven days a week, usually 10 hours a day. I am exhausted, but Jared doesn’t want me to quit.

Jared doesn’t seem to understand that I feel left out when I work this much. Should I keep this job and keep Jared happy, or stand my ground and live life my way? – Exhausted In Iowa Dear Exhausted: At the rate you’re going, Jared will work you into a state of collapse. I could understand his not wanting you to quit your part-time job if the two

I think Child Protective Services needs to know what’s going on with these kids. The little boy is VERY mean to animals and he’s not yet 5. If CPS is called, they will take the kids away and put them in foster care that may be worse

than what they are currently in, but without the love from their grandma. Is there any way to help these children without causing more emotional trauma? – Concerned In Texas Dear Concerned: I’m not sure, but of this I AM certain: That little boy desperately needs to be evaluated by a mental health professional – the sooner the better.

If Grandma can see that her grandson gets the help he needs, she should see that he gets it ASAP. However, if she can’t, and the neglect he is suffering at the hands of his mother is what’s causing him to take out his rage on animals, then Child Protective Services should be notified.

Simple precautions allow safe travel during pregnancy Dear Doctor K: My job requires a lot of travel, and I recently became pregnant with my first child. What do I need to know about traveling safely during pregnancy?

Dear Reader: Being pregnant doesn’t mean you have to stay at home for nine months. There are exceptions; particularly in the last three months, some women develop complications of pregnancy that require them to be resting. But for most women, travel poses no threat to the mother or child.

But travel by car, train or airplane can be less comfortable when you’re pregnant, so you should take a few precautions to travel comfortably and safely.

First, check with your obstetrical care provider to find out when he or she considers it safe for you to travel. As I’m sure you know, pregnancy is typically divided into three trimesters, with each trimester a threemonth period. Travel is generally considered safe during the first and second trimesters. In terms of comfort, the best time to travel is after your fourth month (when morning sickness is gone) and before your third trimester. But

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff if you’re traveling for work, you may not have that much control over your travel schedule.

I do think it’s wise to avoid traveling long distances in the last month before your due date, as due dates can be uncertain and babies can come early. Ask your doctor if he or she recommends that you limit long-distance travel even earlier. Airlines also have their own rules. Most airlines prohibit international travel after 32 weeks of pregnancy and domestic travel after 34 to 36 weeks.

At the airport, don’t worry about passing through metal detectors. They have very low levels of radiation that will not be harmful to you or your baby.

What about airport scanners?

You don’t need to worry about them, either. Let me put it in context. We are all constantly exposed to a low level of radiation from the sun. You would have to go through 25,000 airport scanners to be exposed to the amount of radiation that you are naturally

exposed to in a year.

While the airport scanner doesn’t pose a risk, the airplane does. Once on the plane, don’t sit for more than one hour at a time if you can avoid it. Walk around and stretch your legs frequently to reduce leg cramps. If you must stay in your seat, move your arms and legs to improve blood flow and prevent blood clots from forming. (The same advice applies if you are driving: Take breaks every hour for a short walk.) And always wear a seat belt on an airplane, even if the captain has turned off the seat belt sign.

Finally, drink at least six to eight glasses of water each day.

This will keep you from getting dehydrated and will also prevent you from retaining water. Carry a water bottle with you in the car or on the plane and drink from it frequently.

If you take simple precautions, you can have the benefits of traveling throughout most of your pregnancy.

Three cheers for young people Dear Teens: Young people, now more than ever, are convincing their parents to purchase products that are environmentally safe, and companies are listening and reacting. Because of these young voices, businesses are using more recycled products and are working with environmental groups to ensure their products meet or surpass strict environmental codes.

A major comic book printer began printing its comics on paper made completely from recycled magazines. The reason?

Young readers wrote to the company to save trees.

Many teens tell their parents what products to buy and what products to avoid. The theme is, “If it can be recycled, we buy it.” Also, “in” now are the non-aerosol products – for a better ozone layer.

Environmental Research reported that children are having a growing impact on their parents’ purchasing because of environment information. In a recent survey, parents said they didn’t buy a certain brand of ice cream bar because it used too much packaging, while they bought a particular brand of detergent because their children told them that it was non-toxic.

Even toy companies are aware of the environmental tidal wave. One of the major toy manufacturers has created a new position, a vice president of environmental affairs whose responsibilities include reviewing packaging, products and manufacturing facilities to be sure they are meeting proper environmental standards.

I feed wild birds in our back yard. My dad has made some new feeders, but he made them of metal instead of the usual wood. Is this possible? – Sandy, Erie, Pennsylvania Dear Sandy: I contacted the National Bird-Feeding Society in Northbrook, Illinois, and was informed that birds’ feet do not contain sweat glands. Thus a bird’s feet in contact with cold metal are not in danger of freezing to metal feeders.

Dr. Wallace: I have a lot of questions I’d like answered about sex, but when I approach my mother, she always tells me to ask her later, but later never comes. I read your column and you always advise teens to discuss sexual matters with their parents.

What should a teen (I’m 14) do when a parent won’t discuss sex with her daughter? Help! – Nameless, Galesburg Dear Nameless: If your parents won’t talk to you, your next step should be to contact your school nurse, counselor or physical education teacher when school is in session. Ask this person to set up a conference at the school that includes your counselor and both you and your mother. Then ask all the questions you want.

This week we have had a series of deals in which the bidding has not been either clear-cut or accurate. And on some, the opening lead has been weird. Here is one more in which the right final contract was not reached. How should the auction have gone?

North might have rebid three clubs with such a strong suit and seven playing tricks. South’s sensible two-diamond rebid was forcing for one round. Note also that this guaranteed at least five spades and denied four hearts; with 5-4-4-0 distribution, he would have rebid two hearts – we love majors and dislike minors. Then maybe North should have continued with two hearts (hoping partner could bid no-trump) or two no-trump (hoping it would not wrongside the contract).

However, when North bid two spades, South should not have jumped to four spades. He should have bid three no-trump to offer a choice of games. Here, North would have passed, but if he had held three spades, he would have corrected back to four spades.

As you will have seen, there are 10 top tricks in no-trump: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and six clubs. But four spades had no chance. And even if spades had been 3-3, careful defense could have defeated that game.

Always try to keep your options open. And remember that partner will not forget your earlier bids and their meanings.
