hile working on Kane County Chronicle reporter Nicole Weskerna’s two-day series about vice in the Tri-Cities, which published Thursday and today, we thought

it would be interesting to look at how much local high school dress codes have changed. We found some photos from Batavia High School, with girls dressed in skirts and blouses and boys

in mostly dressy pants and button-up shirts. This brought me to St. Charles North High School on a Friday afternoon, just as the final bell rang, dismissing students for the weekend. I

noticed a lot of students were dressed in more casual jeans and sweatshirts. Not much different than when I was in high school so long ago.

8LOCAL BRIEFS ‘Do-It-Yourself’ Messiah celebration in Aurora AURORA – The Fox Valley Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, Academy Orchestra and guest soloists will join forces with the community to sing-along in a “Do-It-Yourself” Messiah and other holiday music at 3 p.m.

Dec. 8 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 420 W. Downer Place, Aurora. Admission to the concert is free, but it is a benefit concert for Lifespring Ministries, and donations are being solicited. Ten schools make AYP in Tri-Cities, Kaneland

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Only one high school and nine elementary schools in the Tri-Cities school districts and Kaneland School District 302 made Adequate Yearly Progress this year, according to data release by the Illinois State Board of Education on Thursday.

Under No Child Left Behind, every child is expected to be proficient in reading and math by 2014.

Illinois has applied for a waiver of the federal education requirements imposed by No Child Left Behind. According to the ISBE, it remains under review with the U.S. Department of Education.

Overall this year, Batavia School District 101, Geneva School District 304, St. Charles School District 303 and Kaneland did not make AYP. However, each district had schools that did.

Of the 40 schools among the four districts, those making AYP were Ferson Creek and Fox Ridge elementary schools in St. Charles; Grace McWayne, J.B. Nelson and Louise White elementary schools in Batavia; Western Avenue and Williamsburg elementary schools in Geneva; and Kaneland High School and John Shields and John Stewart elementary schools in District 302.

This is the first time Kaneland High School has made AYP since 2008.

“I think it certainly shows the efforts that they’ve made to improve learning for kids,” Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler said.

But, he noted, it will take hard work to sustain improvement.

Because the ISBE raised performance expectations on the reading and math portions of the test third- through eighth-graders take, Geneva officials cautioned the community about drawing conclusions between this year’s and last year’s scores.

“We plan to use the state report cards as information, along with other indicators, to help us with our ongoing efforts toward continuous improvement,” Geneva Superintendent Kent Mutchler said in a written statement.

The requirements were raised to better align with the Common Core Learning Standards and to give a better indication of college and career readiness, according to the state education board.

“I know that it’s a lot of new expectations and it’s difficult to see school scores decline, but we needed to give families a better indication earlier on of college and career readiness,” State Board Chairman Gery J. Chico said in a written state-

The school and district report cards have been reformatted to include information such as the various classes and activities offered at the schools, as well as student academic growth – a feature welcomed by local superintendents.

“I think it’ll be helpful for us in plotting out changes we need to make,” District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

The student academic growth section shows how much progress students have demonstrated from one year to the next in reading and math.

While it will take time to fully understand the report card’s new components, Schuler said it is a move in the right direction.

“It’s consistent with the way we’ve addressed learning in the school district,” he said.

STC East student finds bullet at Norris Rec Center

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles East High School student getting ready for a swim lesson Thursday afternoon found a bullet in the Norris Recreation Center changing area, St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

“It did not disrupt the day for students,” Schlomann said. “School’s on for tomorrow.”

Because the Norris Recreation Center is used by both East students and members of the community, Schlomann said it was difficult to trace the origin of the .22 caliber short round.

“There’s been so many people through that locker room today, including adults there this morning,” Schlomann said, noting it could have easily fallen out of a pocket while someone changed clothes. “It’s really difficult for us to determine anything.”

The freshman gave the round to a staff member after finding it below his locker at the beginning of sixth period, Schlomann said.

A thorough search of the area was conducted, and nothing else was found, St. Charles police said in a press release. Schlomann said the student who discovered the ammunition also was inter-

viewed, and it was clear he just found it.

“It did not warrant, from our perspective, any further backpack searches,” Schlomann said.

The discovery of a bullet at St. Charles North High School two years ago prompted an early dismissal, as well as backpack and locker searches.

The North situation involved a higher caliber round that could have been used to hurt individuals, Schlomann said, and it was found in an area normally populated by students.

“It doesn’t mean we don’t take it seriously,” Schlomann said of Thursday’s discovery. “We do.”

Extra police patrols were in the area for the school’s dismissal, police said, noting the investigation is ongoing. Those with information should call the St. Charles Police Department at 630-3774435.

“There are no current threats or any indication of a threat,” police said.

The Electric Christmas Parade is set for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in downtown St. Charles.

It is part of Holiday Homecoming, a two-day event that also features the Lighting of the Lights in the First Street Plaza, sleigh rides on First Street, visits with Santa Claus and showings of a holiday movie.

Businesses, nonprofits and other organizations wanting to enter the parade must complete the parade entry form and provide a certificate of insurance.

The application fee is $250

Patty Sullivan is a spokeswoman for the Portillo Restaurant Group, which owns Honey-Jam Cafe. She said the restaurant closed Tuesday partly because of increased competition in the area and partly because of changes with the Affordable Care Act. “The decision was difficult and was not made lightly,” she wrote in an email. “Unfortunately, the competition in the area had increased, and other restaurants were offering a breakfast menu at a price that made it difficult to compete with and remain profitable.”

Sullivan went on to write that the restaurant was not able to lower its prices without a negative effect on quality and service – “both of which Mr. [Dick] Portillo was not willing to compromise.” She added that the additional costs and changes that are necessary under the Affordable

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he was surprised to hear that the restaurant closed because he was there twice in the past 10 days and the restaurant seemed very busy.

“I’m kind of dumbfounded by it, really,” he said. “They’ve been such a good business to have in town, a good staple and was very popular with people in town. I’m sure there are going to be a lot of people disappointed.”

Mayes announces bid for Kane County sheriff Secures backing from Pat Perez, who is not seeking reelection after two terms

Ken Brunkalla, who lives in the 800 block of Britta Lane, said he “heard four very distinct shots.”

Brunkalla said he was concerned because he saw at least one trick-or-treater in the area, and he and some of his neighbors weren’t sure what was going on.

Aldermen on Tuesday did recommend amending a city ordinance to allow medical offices as a conditional

use. Pacer Dental proposes to open a full-service dental practice in a 1,525-squarefoot building at 853 N. Randall Road, located near the

Walmart store at the southwest corner of Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway.

The recommendation will go before the full City Council on Monday. Originally, medical and dental clinics were listed as prohibited uses.

In 2009 – at the request of the property owner, Aetna Development Corp. – the Batavia City Council approved an ordinance that removed medical and dental clinics from the list of prohibited uses but no action was taken to add them to the list of al-

lowed uses.

Schielke said he wasn’t concerned about Pacer Dental’s proposal because of its small size. But he was worried about larger, non salestax generating businesses trying to locate on Randall Road.

Sixth Ward Alderman Lisa Clark also voiced concerns about more and more non sales-tax generating businesses wanting to be on Randall Road.

“I don’t want it to get out of control,” Clark said.

All donors receive free mini-medical exams on site and information about their temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and hemoglobin level. Businesses, schools, religious, civic and fraternal organizations partner with Heartland to host blood drives seven days a week.

In addition, Heartland has 17 donor centers located throughout the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.

A look at how times, vice have changed

lenn McConnaughay said he doesn’t envy today’s police officers.

Although he served with the Geneva Police Department for 23 years and often worked beats alone, he said today’s police have a lot more to worry about than he did when he started his law enforcement career in 1949.

If there were vices in Geneva back then, such as prostitution, gambling or drugs, McConnaughay said they usually were well under the radar.

“Drugs – that was kind of starting up when I retired,” he said. “There was very little before that.”

McConnaughay said when he started on the force, Geneva was considered a “country town,” with a population of

There were no special units, and officers often worked alone. McConnaughay remembers driving through alleys and looking for broken windows, which is how police ended up catching some burglars. He also remembers chasing souped-up cars, physically brawling with people who picked fights with police and trying to cozy up to a Chicago gang by attending one of its meetings.

A lot has changed in the 40-plus years since McConnaughay retired, even when it comes to crimes that are considered to be somewhat minor, such as vice crimes.

Vice – by dictionary definition – means both “bad or immoral behavior or habits” and “a minor bad habit.” That could encompass issues involving alcohol, drugs, prostitution, gambling and petty theft.

Kane County sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said most of the vice police deal with today in the Tri-Cities and Kane County happens “behind closed doors.”

It’s not looking for a broken window to find a burglar. It’s not a prostitute standing on a street corner.

It’s not betting on a card game in the streets. It’s simply not as visible. But a larger population often brings a larger variety of crimes.

“Just the population in the last 15 years – the population density has completely

changed,” he said.

With that, the drug culture has changed drastically, he said. People have access to a larger variety of drugs that are more accessible.

“When I think back to when I was in high school, you had marijuana and you had a little cocaine – nobody was doing heroin or meth,” Gengler said. “Now things have changed so much. You have synthetic marijuana being sold in potpourri packages and all these designer drugs that are out there. Heroin’s prevalence in this area is such a big difference. That would not have been an issue back then.”

McConnaughay agrees.

“The drug problem – that’s the worst thing in police now.

People do things they probably

wouldn’t do if they weren’t on drugs,” he said. “[Police today] have to deal with a lot more than we did.”

Alcohol problems also persist, but the issues are far different from the days of Prohibition. City officials and police still struggle with issues related to alcohol, such as fights, over-serving, public intoxication, drunken drivers and underage drinkers, but it’s now a matter of regulating a legal substance.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina, who recently formed St. Charles’ first liquor commission, said the new commission is working to curb some of that behavior.

“It’s our feeling that a lot of this stuff happens late at night,” he said. “I don’t want to roll the sidewalks up at 10 o’clock in St. Charles. ...

St. Charles North High School has a similar dress code. The school requires that students wear clothing that covers the shoulders, back, midriff, hips and lower thighs, according to the student handbook. Short skirts and highcut shorts are not allowed, nor are low-cut or strapless tops that don’t have a shirt covering them.

Gambling is another socalled vice that has changed through the years. Historically, gamblers in the Tri-Cities would bet on local football games, according to newspaper articles. Video gambling today is legal in certain municipalities but hasn’t been legalized in the Tri-Cities.

Technology has changed

many aspects of crime, including prostitution.

The Mann Act of 1910 was originally enacted to prevent forced prostitution and also made it illegal to transport women across state lines for prostitution. The book, “Prostitution: An Illustrated History” by Vern and Bonnie Bullough, published in 1978, states that by 1920, about 20 states “regarded habitual fornication as a punishable act and, in 16 states, a single act was enough to bring conviction. That made enforcement impossible.”

The act also made it illegal for men to talk to suspected prostitutes on streets and sidewalks, and men could not walk along the sidewalk with

a prostitute. Enforcing the Mann Act sometimes led to other vices.

The book states, “Vice officers had to resort to dubious tactics to get a prostitute to commit herself, which opened up wide-scale bribery.”

Gengler said the computer age has made prostitutes more accessible to anyone with a smartphone or Internet connection.

He said that type of illegal activity is much more discreet because people no longer have to approach someone who is walking along a public street.

“People that may be inclined to do that don’t have to do that anymore,” he said.

Gengler said when it comes to crime and vice, police today

are more active in trying to prevent crimes and reforming people who have abused vices, such as drugs or alcohol. In St. Charles, it used to be illegal to swim nude or semi-nude during the day in the Fox River. Today, it is illegal to swim in the Fox River within St. Charles city limits, said Kim Schult, records division manager with the St. Charles Police Department. Gengler said when the ordinance was written in the late 1800s, people were likely more worried about people not wearing clothing. He said the ordinance overlooked the dangers of swimming in the Fox River.

“I think now we have a better understanding that all this is tied together,” he said. “It’s not, ‘We gotta get rid of the drug problem because drugs are bad.’ We have a better understanding that all this stuff is part of a bigger picture. If you’ve got a drug problem, you see an increase in burglaries and stolen vehicles, and then you start having overdoses.

It’s kind of a big chain. It all comes together.”

He said in the coming months, the commission will work to establish a new permit system. He said liquor establishments would be able to stay open until midnight and would have the option to purchase a permit to stay open until 1 a.m. or a permit to stay open until 2 a.m. Rogina said those permits are privileges that can be revoked, and the idea is to establish a further sense of responsibility for liquor establishments to not violate any liquor laws.

“We’ve listened to the people in our community,” he said. “Sometimes there are excesses downtown and sometimes things get out of hand, but we want to bring in a sense of responsibility and have a fun environment.”

Even vices that haven’t been considered crimes have changed a lot through the years. For example, back in the 1950s, girls couldn’t wear slacks to school and short skirts. A Batavia High School yearbook photo of the 1955 journalism club shows female students with long skirts that fall well below the knee – none of them are in shorts or pants.

“All the girls had to wear skirts or dresses and always had bobby socks, saddle shoes and loafers,” said Sandra Chalupa, who graduated from Batavia High School in 1955.

“Boys had to wear a shirt, not just a plain, old T-shirt. And they had to wear belts.”

She said shorter skirts didn’t become popular until the 1960s, and girls weren’t allowed to wear slacks until the early 1970s. Chalupa said the school had very few problems with dress code violations, but a few belts were kept on hand in the school office.

Schools still have dress codes in place, but they’re not as stringent as they used to be.

Batavia High School’s current dress code states, “modesty in dress is expected,” and goes on to say that bare torsos, revealing or immodest attire in the judgment of the staff will not be tolerated. The dress code bars strapless tops, spaghetti straps and stipulates that shorts must extend past a student’s fingertips when standing upright.

• A juvenile was charged Sunday, Oct. 27, with two counts of domestic battery. According to police, the juvenile struck the victim in the face after fighting over a cellphone.

• David J. Randle, 50, who is homeless, on Sunday, Oct. 27, was banned from the Challenge Properties, 525 N. River St., Batavia.

• Someone reportedly threw eggs and potatoes at a trailer in the 1900 block of West Wilson Street; it was reported to police Saturday, Oct. 26.

• A North Aurora man on Saturday, Oct. 26, reported that an unknown white man in a blue hoodie shoved and punched him in the face while at a party in the 200 block of Aldrin Lane. The victim

be free of a similar restriction put on the president? Would you vote for a constitutional amendment limiting senators to two terms and representatives to three terms?

Please don’t trot out the old adage that elections serve as term limits. They simply do not!

They are controlled by money from special-interest groups.

Granted, more definition is necessary for any proposed amendment, but are you philosophically in favor of such an amendment? This is a vital issue that must be addressed if we are to return to the intent of our Founding Fathers, that politicians are public servants and not career office-holders.

A public servant simply must practice term limitations.

An examination of those lost health plans THE WASHINGTON POST President Barack Obama famously claimed Americans who liked their insurance plans would be able to keep them under health care reform. Well, that’s not completely true, nor is it the only example of the Obama administration failing to prepare the public for the Affordable Care Act’s phasein. And it was one of the only things Republicans at a House Ways and Means Committee Hearing on Tuesday wanted to talk about.

Some Americans are starting to get ominous-sounding letters about their health care coverage. Insurance provider Florida Blue, for example, is canceling 300,000 bare-bones insurance plans that aren’t up

to the Affordable Care Act’s standards. Customers can transition onto better quality – but more expensive – plans.

But, despite what the president may have said, this news should not have come as a shock, and it is not evidence that the law is a failure.

The reform underway is rooted in the notion that there is a certain catalog of health care benefits to which all Americans should have access, and that they should not have to pay outrageous amounts of money to get that coverage. It means to accomplish that goal by mandating that everyone not on government-run programs such as Medicaid pay into the private insurance system, and by setting certain standards on what health care insurance

must cover.

The vast majority of Americans, most of whom get health insurance from their employers, won’t see much change. But a significant number – a study looking at 2010 figures said half – of customers currently buying insurance on their own don’t have plans of that quality.

Some of their plans won’t be touched, regardless, because the law grandfathers some old plans into the system. Some of the people who must transition onto different benefit packages might actually pay less than they do now because the law will place new limits on how much insurance companies can mark up plans for the old and the sick and because the government will help a ma-

jority of people in the individual market pay for coverage.

But there are some people – no one seems to know how many, exactly – who will end up paying more for insurance next year because they make too much to qualify for government subsidies, because they are young, because their previous coverage was shoddy, or, probably, a combination of the above.

Although some people might pay more than they did before, they and many others will also get more. Among other things, they will be less financially vulnerable when they get sick – in some cases dramatically less. Their new plans also will put taxpayers at less risk of having to cover big medical bills when under-insured patients

unexpectedly fall very ill.

That goes, too, for people who currently decline to buy insurance but who will have to next year.

Reform still might not sound like a great deal to people who are young, feel healthy and don’t want to pay for coverage. Yet having lots of healthy people paying into the new system on its terms will limit their financial risk, and their participation will allow others who have been priced out of the health-insurance market – those with serious preexisting conditions, for example – to obtain good coverage. They deserve compassion, too.

None of this is an outrage.

It’s the predictable result of a defensible policy choice embedded in the reform.

He reminded me a lot – and we train Anthony Scaccia over at Batavia, so I know Anthony well – and they’re a lot alike with style of running and the type of builds, and both of those guys are just great kids.”

After starting the season 5-0, the Eagles were soundly beaten three straight weeks by Marmion (35-14), IC Catholic (48-6) and Montini (49-0). Considering most of the team’s regulars were unavailable for some of the Marmion game and the entire IC Catholic and Montini games, the results have to be kept in perspective.

Beebe called Smith “hands down” the team’s best, allaround player, and credited Smith for keeping the Eagles

afloat from a morale standpoint with so many underclassmen filling in for injured regulars.

“It’s crazy, we’ve lost three of four and a couple of them bad – that can be really humiliating for a team and tear them apart, but it’s actually brought us closer together,” Beebe said. “I’m encouraged about Legend being one of those guys to keep this thing rolling and keep it positive. …

He’s one of my favorite kids I’ve ever coached.”

Added Smith: “The threegame losing streak, it didn’t bother me that much. I know what we’re capable of, and I know if we put our mind to it and we have faith in each other, we can pull through.”

With a freshman – Ben Weerts – under center the past few weeks, the Eagles have had to turn more to their running game to move the chains, but Smith said he hasn’t felt extra pressure.

“We can’t just depend on one group to do all the work,” Smith said. “We’re a team. We have to work together.”

On the season, Smith has rushed for 1,128 yards and 14 TDs on 141 carries.

He hasn’t played much defense lately since his workload on offense has spiked with the team’s injury woes in the

“We sometimes mess up, but we work at it,” Smith said of the past few weeks. “It’s not always going to be perfect, but we strive to be perfect.”

he Aurora Christian football team entered its regular-season finale at Guerin on Saturday with a three-game losing streak, desperate for a jolt of confidence, not to mention a playoff-clinching sixth win.

Legend Smith was happy to oblige, rocking the hapless Gators defense for 331 rushing yards and six touchdowns as the two-time defending IHSA Class 3A state champions stemmed the slide leading into the playoffs. Smith and the Eagles visit Suburban Christian Conference foe IC Catholic Prep on Saturday in a first-round, 3A matchup.

Smith, a senior, said he ran so much against Guerin that his ankle was “a good sore” afterward, but then again a malady of any sort is no laughing matter for the Eagles at this stage. Smith has been among a minority of Eagles starters who has been healthy enough to stay on the field late in the regular season, when much of Aurora Christian’s top-tier talent was sidelined by various injuries.

Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe said, in retrospect, he felt badly about not giving Smith one more carry since he was five yards off the program’s single-game record, of which he was not aware at the time. Smith didn’t play in the second half as the Eagles won via running clock.

Also a skillful cornerback, Smith played a larger role on defense during the Eagles’ title run last season before becoming the team’s featured back with the graduation of Joel Bouagnon, now at Northern Illinois.

“We knew what we had in Legend Smith,” Beebe said.

Batavia has been a heavy favorite by seed each of its past two first-round playoff games, but needed a furious rally to top Niles Notre Dame in 2011 before falling to Downers Grove North last season. Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron isn’t connecting any dots on that front as second-seeded Batavia prepares for 15th seeded DeKalb.

“It’s apples and oranges,” Piron said.

“If you’re playing a team from a conference that you know is an exceptional conference and they’re an average team [in that conference], and then if you’re in a conference that maybe isn’t as good and you’re a top team, well, it’s hard to compare. Our kids last year, we lost a game against a a very good football team. We were very good, and so were they.”

SLEEPER GAME OF THE WEEK Aurora Christian at IC Catholic Prep in Class 3A, first-round game. Aurora Christian was clobbered by IC Catholic when the Suburban Christian Conference foes met in Week 7. But the Eagles will be healthier this time – it would be hard not to be – and it’s hard to envision a program as prideful as the two-time defending, 3A state champions going down meekly.

COACHING SPOTLIGHT Geneva coach Rob Wicinski and St. Patrick coach Dan Galante go back more than 20 years from when Wicinski coached at Niles North and Galante was a college defensive coordinator at North Park. Mutual friend Tim Rucks – then North Park’s head coach – had come to North Park from Niles North. Galante saluted the job Wicinski has done turning Geneva into a west-suburban power.

“It’s a little different when you know the guy that you’re playing, and then talking to him [once the pairings came out Saturday], it’s pretty wild how it works that way,” Galante said.

THINKING AHEAD If Round 1 results go by seed, it won’t be long before the build-up begins for what would be a highly anticipated second-round showdown in 5A between Kaneland and Joliet Catholic.

The Knights and perennial powerhouse Hilltoppers are both one-loss teams, with Kaneland welcoming Hampshire in the first round tonight and Joliet Catholic hosting Chicago Urban Prep on Saturday. A potential Kaneland-Joliet Catholic matchup would be contested in Joliet.

7:30 p.m. today Buzz in the stands Whether the Vikings can rediscover the thrill of winning in the playoffs.

That used to be almost a given for a spoiled Geneva fan base. Coach Rob Wicinski’s program won at least one playoff game every year from 2004 to 2010, but the Vikings were eliminated in the first round in 2011 and did not make the postseason last year.

Marquee matchup Geneva’s offensive line vs. St. Patrick’s defensive line The Shamrocks’ defensive line is considered one of the team’s chief strongsuits, led by East Suburban Catholic defensive player of the year Quentin Voce, an end.

Joe Haniacek is a 260-pound defensive tackle that also could cause recurring angst for Vikings quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and Co. Geneva coach Rob Wicinski considers matching the Shamrocks’ physical lineplay a serious concern, although he said it was hard to determine on film how agile the Shamrocks’ linemen are.

“We’re going to have our hands full on both sides of the ball up front,” Wicinski said. “They’re nasty like buffalo, but if they can run like gazelles, too, this is not going to be a good matchup for us.”

X-factor If the game comes down to the final minutes, both teams’ penchants for pulling close games out of the fire will be tested.

Geneva scored dramatic victories this

season against Oswego (29-27) and Metea Valley (49-45), while St. Patrick has relied even more heavily on winning the close ones, topping Bloomington (21-20), Joliet Catholic (22-21) and Carmel (17-15).

“It’s been exciting, that’s for sure,” St. Patrick coach Dan Galante said. “Our fans don’t leave the games early.”

Best-case scenario for the Shamrocks St. Patrick is able to gouge a Geneva defense that has occasionally looked vulnerable, as recently as the Week 8 shootout win against Metea Valley.

Galante’s team relies heavily on workhorse running back Jeremy Molina behind an offensive line that includes all-conference left tackle Jack Donovan and cousins Patrick Moriarty and Billy Moriarty.

“We definitely have an identity,” Galante said. “We do like to run the football. I think that sets up a lot of stuff we do, and then we have the ability to get into some spread stuff. It’s a nice balance, a lot like what I’m looking at with Geneva on film. They have the ability to run power and they have the ability to run spread. We’re pretty similar in that way, too.”

St. Pat junior quarterback Zach Fuller is plenty experienced, having taken over late last season because of an injury, and will try to connect with a receiving corps led by two-way standout Mike Warner and recent sophomore call-up Trevor Heinlein.

Best-case scenario for the Vikings The Vikings continue what Wicinski sees

as steady, week-to-week progress his team has been able to make.

Last week, for example, Geneva’s Chis Barger had the team’s first kickoff return for a touchdown this season.

“I think as far as kickoffs and kickoff returns, we’ve seen markable improvement all the way through,” Wicinski said. “Just like in all phases of the game, I’m excited to see them play again because each week we’ve seen improvement in most areas.”

Senior defensive lineman/place kicker Billy Douds has been relatively quiet in the kicking game since converting a key field goal in the Oswego game, but in a potentially close game like this one, Wicinski thinks Douds has the right mindset.

“I asked him last year why he didn’t do it and he kind of shrugged his shoulder and said ‘No one asked.’ … So he’s the perfect guy [to be a kicker],” Wicinski said. “He doesn’t really think about it.”

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Geneva 30, St. Patrick 26 There aren’t many first-round matchups between teams as hot as these two, with Geneva coming in on a six-game winning streak and St. Patrick winners of five in a row.

The Vikings will need to be locked in mentally to oust a St. Pat’s team that owns a signature win against Joliet Catholic (8-1) and has adopted a do-or-die mindset since starting the season 1-3. It could get hairy, but playing at home and with a multidimensional offense that has been outstanding in the second half of the season, the Vikings merit the benefit of the doubt.

PREP FOOTBALL ROUND ONE PREVIEW CAPSULES Class 8A first round: (11) St. Charles East (6-3) at (6) Stevenson (7-2), 3 p.m. Saturday Last week: St. Charles East beat Larkin, 55-12; Stevenson beat Lake Zurich, 24-17.

The skinny: The Saints will deal with a legitimate, large-school power as their welcome to Class 8A. Stevenson (enrollment of almost 4,000) started the season with two narrow losses but has been one of the elite teams in the north suburbs since, rattling off seven straight wins including recent triumphs over playoff teams such as Lake Zurich and Lake Forest.

from a 17-0 hole to win, 24-17. East coach Mike Fields said the Patriots’ composure in that game was highly impressive, as is the Patriots’ overall talent level. “Athletically, they’re going to be up there with anybody we’ve played this year –Neuqua, Batavia, Geneva,” Fields said. “They have athletes, and they might have some better athletes than we’ve seen, actually.” Junior Parker Vidmich – the Saints’ projected starting middle linebacker entering the season – is expected to return after missing the past seven weeks with injury. East quarterback Jimmy Mitchell and a passing game highlighted by recent Illinois State commit

Brannon Barry (644 receiving yards), Mo Flanigan (403) and Mitch Munroe (383) will look to build off last week’s offensive outburst at Larkin. Some big special teams returns from Barry and Munroe might also be needed to keep East competitive in what Fields knows will be a difficult assignment. “We’ve been fortunate to win six games this year,” Fields said. “We believe in what we we do. We just have to stay true to ourselves. If we do, if we execute, we think we can do some really good things.”

The skinny: Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said he’s not sure the Cadets have seen a running back as fast as Fenton’s Alex Cowan. Naturally, the starting point for comparisons when it comes to elite backs Marmion has seen this year is St. Francis’ James Butler. “We got to Butler, but he ran through tackles, he was so physical,” Thorpe said.

“We’re hoping we can get to Cowan and surround him with our speed, but he’s so shifty, you don’t get a good, clean shot at him.”

The Bison also have a capable air attack behind quarterback Willie Wassmann, while defensively, Thorpe said Fenton brings a multitude of blitzes from various angles that will keep seasoned Cadets quarterback Brock Krueger on his toes. “We’ve got to see it,” Thorpe said. “And we’ve been working on it all week, blocking-wise.” Thorpe has been delighted with the play of free safety Jake Gallaher, a senior who had two interceptions – one returned 70 yards for a touchdown – last week at Walther Lutheran.

Extra point: Marmion finished in a tie for second place in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue with Marian Central at 5-2; Montini (7-0) won the SCC Blue.

Playoff trivia: Fenton is just 2-11 all-time in the playoffs, compared to 12-12 for Marmion.

Class 5A first round: (12) Hampshire (6-3) at (5) Kaneland (8-1), 7 p.m. today Last week: Hampshire lost to Cary-Grove, 33-13; Kaneland beat Morris, 49-14.

The skinny: Playing with emotion is almost a given when it comes to the playoffs, but Kaneland knows that Hampshire might have a leg up in that department considering this is the final season for 25-year Whip-Purs coach Dan Cavanaugh, who led Hampshire to a Class 2A state title in 1995.

Additionally, this is Hampshire’s first playoff berth since 2008.

The Knights’ defense will be tested by Hampshire receiver Tim Jansen (636 receiving yards), the go-to target for quarterback Nick Mohlman, as well as standout running back Nick Kielbasa (1,189 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns).

Kaneland’s own running game returned to form in last week’s win at Morris as Isaac Swithers ran for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. DeKalb is the teams’ lone common opponent this season; Hampshire edged DeKalb, 35-34, in Week 2, while Kaneland handled the Barbs, 35-12, on Oct. 4.

Extra point: This is the fifth straight year Kaneland will host a first-round playoff game. The Knights dropped a Round 1 home game with Sycamore in 2009 but have moved on each of the past three years.

The skinny: After losing four straight games, imperiling its playoff chances, St. Francis demonstrated resoundingly it is a playoff-caliber team in last week’s must-win rout over St. Edward. But the Spartans had to pay the price for their conference tailspin in drawing an undefeated, first-round foe. Glenbard South, though, has played a relatively

soft scheduling, with 6-3 Fenton the top opponent, record-wise, it has defeated. “We can’t really see too many flaws that they have,” St. Francis coach Greg Purnell said. “I think the competition that we’ve played in our league might be a little bit stronger, but nevertheless, if you can go nine Fridays without losing, I’ve only been around three or four of those in about 46 years, so you’ve got to be darn good, so my hat goes off to them.” While running back James Butler is St. Francis’ marquee player, Purnell praised the progress quarterback Zach Prociuk has shown this season.

“Zach had a wonderful game last Friday night,” Purnell said. “He’s actually played really well the last three games, so he’s improving.

We’re kind of where we want to be at this point of the season.”

Extra point: The Raiders’ only close game came in Week 2, a 23-22 road win at 5-4 Antioch.

Playoff trivia: Since winning the 5A state championship in 2008, St. Francis has won only one playoff game, in 2011.

Class 4A first round: (10) Aurora Central Catholic (6-3) at (7) King (7-2), 12 p.m. Saturday at Gately Stadium Last week: ACC lost to Montini, 47-0; King beat Curie, 22-21.

The skinny: Aurora Central Catholic broke its 15-year playoff drought last season but lost in the first round of the 3A draw to St. Joseph-Ogden. The next step for coach Brian Casey’s program, the Chargers hope, is what would be their first playoff win since 1996.

A huge Week 8 win over Marmion should provide ACC plenty of confidence it can do that despite last week’s unsightly result against unbeaten Montini. King is coached by 41-year veteran coach Lonnie Williams. “Playing Bogan earlier this season (a 42-7 win) will give us a good idea on what we can expect from an athletic standpoint,” Casey said on the Chargers program’s website.

“We can spend hours comparing scores and what not, and we do not have time to do that.”

Extra point: King has beaten one team with a winning record this season, defeating 6-3 Phillips,

28-26, on Oct. 4. For a west suburban reference point, the Jaguars opened their season winning at West Chicago (1-8), 20-16.

Playoff trivia: A bleak piece of postseason trivia, but perhaps emboldening for ACC – the Jaguars are 0-8 all-time in the playoffs.

Class 3A first round: (10) Aurora Christian (6-3) at (7) IC Catholic Prep (6-3), 1 p.m. Saturday Last week: Aurora Christian beat Guerin, 48-7; IC Catholic Prep beat Chicago Christian, 56-20.

The skinny: Typically transparent Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe declined to specify which of his many injured starters will return for Saturday’s game. Beebe is clinging to any potential game-planning advantage the Eagles can get, reflecting the seriousness of the Round 1 challenge that awaits the two-time defending, Class 3A state champions. IC Catholic Prep trounced Aurora Christian, 48-6, on Oct. 12 in Elmhurst on a day in which the majority of Aurora Christian’s typical starters – including quarterback Austin Bray – were sidelined. The Eagles had a flurry of doctor appointments this week that could loom large in the game’s outcome. “There are going to be guys who still don’t get to play in this game, and I feel horrible for them because they’re seniors,” Beebe said. “Hopefully, we can pull out this victory just for them to maybe give them one more week [to recover].”

It’s been quite a while since the Eagles have been a decided underdog in a playoff game. “I’ve always enjoyed that role, and I thrive in that role,” Beebe said of being an underdog. “And I think our players thrive in that role. I don’t think that’s going to be a problem for us.”

Extra point: The Eagles will try to do a better job of reining in IC Catholic’s Clark Brinkman this time. He returned the game’s opening kick 95 yards for a touchdown and had a 74-yard TD reception in the first quarter of the teams’ Suburban Christian Conference meeting earlier this month.

Playoff trivia: Aurora Christian has made the playoffs 12 straight years, while IC Catholic is on a four-year string of playoff berths.

The skinny: Batavia coach Dennis Piron acknowledged that playing some of the struggling UEC River teams late in the season – especially winless Elgin last week – didn’t make for an ideal build-up to the playoffs. Still, there’s no arguing with the Bulldogs’ dominance since a Week 2 loss to Richards, a fellow 8-1 team in the Class 6A draw. The Bulldogs have scored 44 or more points each of the past seven weeks, and led 42-0 over Elgin early in the second quarter. “I thought we did a good job of doing what we were supposed to do,” Piron said. “Honestly, last week, senior night, it was nice to give kids a shot to do some fun stuff, but that really wasn’t great preparation for the playoffs. Hopefully in practice, we scrimmage and do 1-on-1 work against ourselves, hopefully our whole body of work the whole season, including how well we did against [the top teams on our schedule] bodes well for this first playoff game.” DeKalb’s high-scoring, Week 9 win against Rochelle put the Barbs in the field. The Barbs run lots of option out of shotgun, with explosive back Dre Brown (1,284 rushing yards) and quarterback Jack Sauter (881 rushing yards) each capable of puncturing the defense. The past two teams to eliminate Batavia in the postseason – Prairie Ridge in 2011 and Downers Grove North last year – have featured the option, but Piron said DeKalb poses distinct wrinkles in its attack. The Rochelle win last week was DeKalb’s first against a team with a winning record. “I would say that the top half of their league

is considered to be some of top teams in 5A or 6A,” Piron said of the Northern Illinois Big 12. “It’s a good football league. All those schools really care about football, and they have competed well all year long.”

Extra point: As the weather turns in late October and into November, Piron said the Bulldogs’ offensive versatility should be a postseason asset, allowing offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari to have plenty of options regardless of field conditions.

Playoff trivia: DeKalb has made five playoff appearances in program history, with the last coming in 2010, compared to 17 for Batavia.

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com ADDISON – Geneva girls volleyball coach KC Johnsen only needs one hand to count the number of freshman starters he’s had in his 13 seasons as coach.

With the Vikings’ season on the line Thursday, two of those five were on the floor as Geneva moved on with a 20-25, 25-22, 25-20 win over rival Batavia to capture the IHSA Class 4A Addison Trail Regional Championship.

After dropping Game 1, Geneva freshmen Ally Barrett and Grace Loberg, both outside hitters, helped the Vikings (27-9) out of a 22-20 hole in Game 2 with four of the Vikings’ final five points.

The come-from-behind win in Game 2 carried over to Game 3 as the Vikings jumped out to 16-8 lead and held on to advance to Tuesday’s Geneva Sectional semifinals, where they will play top-seeded Glenbard West, a 25-21, 25-13 winner against Schaumburg.

Geneva’s youthful front line, which also includes key sophomore reserve Kyley Thompson, is fortified by juniors Hannah Lanasa and Kelsey Wicinski and senior Taylor Marmitt.

“I get nervous, but my teammates are always behind me 100 percent,” Loberg said. “Whenever I mess up, they are always right there to pick me right back up.

They have been great. I was extremely nervous in Game 2 [trailing 22-20] but all of the older girls picked it up and helped us push through.”

It looked as if Batavia (2017) would pull off the twogame victory, breaking a 2020 tie in Game 2 as Katelynn Fegan and Heather Meyer each had kills to give the Bulldogs a slim cushion.

Meyer’s soft kill forced a Geneva timeout, where the Vikings regrouped, using a pair of Batavia unforced errors and a Marmitt kill to pull ahead, 23-22.

With the game on the line, it was Loberg who came up big, banging home a pair of kills to force a Game 3.

Having captured the momentum, Geneva rattled off seven of the first eight points in Game 3 as the Vikings received points from Megan Cameron, Loberg and Thompson.

Trailing 18-10, Batavia used three unforced errors in a row and a block from Anna Clausen to get back into the game at 18-15. A pair of net violations pulled the Bulldogs within 23-20, but

they would get no closer as libero Wicinski linked up with Lanasa and Loberg to end the match.

Wicinski was effusive in praising her young teammates, helping them stay calm during such a tight match.

“They have really stepped up and started coming up big on the court,” Wicinski said.

“We need to keep comforting them though if they messed up and tell them to shake it off and keep going. We just had to stay within ourselves, get a pass and get a good swing, and we did.”

While Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne was complimentary of Geneva’s victory, she felt it was the Bulldogs’ match to win.

“You have to credit Geneva, they attacked the ball and kept hanging in there,” Trippi-Payne said. “In Game 2, we had our opportunities.

We have a drill that we do called ‘22-20,’ that we do in practice. We just made a few defensive mistakes, and sometimes that happens.”

The Vikings were led by Loberg and Barrett, who had 14 and 11 kills, respectively.

Late flurry saves St. Charles East

It was a banner statistical night for a few Saints, but Kull noted some intangible moments that she thought were crucial.

“Annie Hughes, huge heart – in the timeout, she made some great, great comments and really led like a captain should,” Kull said. “And then I was really pleased with Ashley Bullock. That was a huge kill by her [to bring East within 12-11 in Game 3]. That was big. I’m thankful that we got through.”

York (23-12) piled up 18 blocks, which coach Patty Iverson thought should have been enough to propel her team to the title.

“That’s our best blocking match ever but we didn’t come up with some of the kills we needed to come up with, and we made a couple hitting errors that we shouldn’t have made,” Iverson said.

Senior setter Carly Jimenez had 40 assists and 13 digs, Voltolina had 10 kills, Meagan Smith added 10 kills and Hughes added 29 digs for East.

The left-handed Voltolina was especially productive with a cluster of kills late in Game 1 as East clawed back from a 22-18 deficit to win, capped by Smith’s kill.

“I think it’s honestly amazing,” Voltolina said of the Saints’ win. “It’s great to be a part of this team and program.

I love my team.”

North finds inspiration in wild match

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com SOUTH ELGIN – Heather Dorniden is not a volleyball player, but she still played an inspirational role in St. Charles North’s victory over Wheaton North in the Class 4A South Elgin Girls Volleyball Regional championship match Thursday night.

The North Stars (29-5) rallied from an eight-point deficit in the third and decisive game to down the Falcons, 2519, 24-26, 26-24.

St. Charles North led the second game, 24-17, but Wheaton North (23-15) scored the next nine points to force Game 3. The Falcons continued their roll by scoring the first seven points of the final game. The scoring spree prompted a timeout from St. Charles North coach Lindsey Hawkins, who reminded her players of the story of Dorniden, a track star in the last decade for the University of Minnesota.

And so that’s what we said in the timeout. We just need to believe.”

Dorniden fell in the middle of the 600-meter finals at the 2008 Big Ten Indoor Championships, but in a tremendous display of guts and determination, ran down the field to win the race at the wire.

“We really just didn’t want to end our season on a bad note,” St. Charles North middle blocker Sophia DuVall said. “We wanted it so badly and I feel like it was kind of

one of those mind over matter things.”

DuVall had 10 kills in the match, including four in the opening game.

“Obviously our outsides, the Krage sisters [Taylor and Daley] are pretty key, but some teams will tend to hone in on them if we go to them a lot,” North Stars setter Sydney Wohlert said. “Our sophomore and right sides are stepping up huge, Claire [Anderson] and Jaclyn Taylor, but also our middles. I pulled them aside before and said, ‘This is your game. They have shorter middles than us, so if you get up there, I’ll give you the ball.’ ” St. Charles North seemed in control of the second game, taking a 24-17 lead on a Daley Krage block, one of six kills she had on the night. But a Grace Tiesman block started the 16-point run by the Falcons.

“We were really frustrated,” Wohlert said. “But we’ve been fighters all season. That’s what we’ve been known for, is having resilience and being able to come back in key moments.”

ELMHURST – Chloe Rojas should have been physically and emotionally spent at the end of a grueling, threegame match, but instead the St. Charles East junior libero sounded energized.

Moments after East survived a huge scare Thursday from host York in the Saints’ 28-26, 19-25, 25-23 win in the IHSA Class 4A regional championship game, Rojas wondered what a victory this hardfought might mean for the Saints going forward.

“It just makes me so excited to see what else we can do,” Rojas said. “If we can make it through that game, what else can we do? We can do anything.

It just adds to how well we’ve been doing this season. We have not had one point where we haven’t given our best.”

East (31-6) advances to face crosstown rival St. Charles North in the second match of Tuesday’s Geneva Sectional semifinal doubleheader.

Longtime Saints coach Jennie Kull has won a regional title in all but one of her seasons at East but York came awfully close to doubling that total. East trailed, 23-21, in decisive Game 3 before the Saints showed enough fortitude to save their season.

Senior Dana Voltolina’s kill drew East within 23-22 for a side-out, and Rojas then served three straight points to end it. A Rojas ace made it 2423 Saints, and the final point came when York miscommunicated on an in-between ball that crashed to the floor.

Rojas said her thought process when she took over the serve with East trailing, 23-22, was all about her orange and black-clad teammates.

“I was just thinking this is about my team, this isn’t even about me,” Rojas said. “I’m not a senior, it’s not even my senior year, so I’m doing this for my seniors and for my team,

Kaneland starts fast, can’t finish

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com SANDWICH – The Kaneland girls volleyball team gave Sycamore a scare Thursday but the Knights’ conference rival regrouped to end Kaneland’s season.

The Knights prevailed 2517 in Game 1, but Sycamore won Game 2 convincingly, 2512, and then pulled away late in Game 3 with a 25-18 decision to win the IHSA Class 3A Sandwich Regional title and advance to Tuesday’s Class 3A Princeton Sectional semifinal against Dunlap.

“I’m very proud of them because they did a great job and we got great leadership when we needed it to happen,” Sycamore coach Eric Nore said.

“We’ll see what happens now from here. We’re just happy we’re moving on. Our mantra was that we could play in November, and that’s all that matters now.”

Sycamore junior Mattie Hayes (seven kills) wasn’t sure what the reason was for the Spartans’ slow start, but she was enthusiastic about how the team responded.

“I guess we just really weren’t as focused as we needed to be,” she said. “We had a talk after the first game and we made sure we adjusted and played more as a team. Our offense and defense were much better.”

Nore also said the slick gym floor played a factor.

“We learned right away that this floor is a challenge,” he said. “I made a crack at [Kaneland coach Kerri McCastland] that it’s OK because we trained on a slick floor and she was like, ‘What?’ But we did, we trained a little bit with slick conditions.”

Kaneland sophomore Vanessa Gould sparked the Knights, scoring on back-toback serves to pull the Knights ahead, 8-7. The Knights maintained that lead up to 12-11 before the Spartans took control for good by scoring four straight to pull ahead, 16-12.

The Knights wouldn’t get to within two points the rest of the night.

“We just were really pumped up after winning that second game and having fun,” Sycamore senior Christina Dailey said. “We seem to play much better when we’re having fun.”

Jenee Carlson (13 digs) and Kendra Larson (26 assists) had big efforts for the winners while Mallory Wolf and Gabby Wenger each added five kills in the matchup of Northern Illinois Big 12 East foes.

“We didn’t have the best record this season, but we knew once the playoffs started we’d be 0-0,” Dailey said.

“We’re now 3-0, and it feels great.”

Kaneland concluded its first season under McCastland at 14-16.

Central volleyball dominates G-K in regional championship KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENOA – The Burlington Central girls volleyball team beat Genoa-Kingston, 25-15, 25-14, in the IHSA Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Regional championship match Thursday to win its first regional title since 2008.

“This is a team that has set some good goals for ourselves, being conference champs, regional champs, and we’re just checking those off right now,” Rockets coach Marv Leavitt said. “We’re getting better. We were focused and ready to play.”

Behind three aces from junior Lauren Wiltsie, the Rockets (26-11) took a 10-4 lead in the first game. Wiltsie also had four kills in the game, and the Cogs couldn’t

close the gap to fewer than five.

G-K took a 4-1 lead in the second game, but Central came back with a 15-1 run, including 12 straight points when senior Allie O’Reilly was serving.

The Cogs (19-18) hung with Central point-for-point for the rest of the game, but kills by senior Jenna Schudel and Maddy Barry capped the win.

The Rockets will play Lake Villa on Tuesday in an IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Sectional semifinal.

“We got on some nice runs, and Wiltsie in the first game was huge,” Leavitt said.

“Those just change the matches right there. We got some good play all the way around from everyone. Our defense was really strong tonight.”

IHSA Class 3A Timothy Christian Regional: St. Francis regrouped from a Game 1 loss for the second straight match, rallying past Montini, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18, in the regional final.

Molly Haggerty (15 kills, 17 digs), Sam Dubiel (23 digs) and Mary Boken (16 service points) were among the key components allowing St. Francis (34-3) to win its 24th straight regional title and advance to the Coal City Sectional semifinal Tuesday to face Joliet Catholic.

“Montini is a fine team,” St. Francis coach Peg Kopec said. “They played with a lot of heart. It was a very intense match tonight.”

The Chicago Tribune put all five college football rankings – the BCS, the computer, the AP, the USA Today coaches, and the Harris interactive polls – in one section on its print sports page that Monday. One thing was obvious.

Which school in all five was spelled three different ways in the Trib? Northern Illinois, of course.

There was some space limitations in the BCS agate but there’s (grrrr) “North Illinois” (no period on the abbreviation). In the computer poll, it’s “No. Illinois.” In the AP, USA Today, and Harris, it’s “Northern Illinois.”

Hate to pick on some old friends on the sports desk at 435 N. Michigan A., but is it an editing problem locally or did it originate with the individual polls?

What it does initiate is the never-ending campus branding debate: NIU or Northern Illinois or what? Despite the sterling preseason, Derrick Rose is still rusty.

The critical question in the D-Rose era has been a lack of a consistent, big-time low-post scorer. So Mr. Scapegoat, aka Carlos Boozer, leads all scorers with 31 points the other night.

What happened to the Bulls’ other NBA all-stars?

And now comes the score Wednesday night that Philadelphia 76ers beat the defending champ Heat.

Feels great, eh, Bulls fans?

What’s even worse? The fact that the “sophisticated” Chicago media types collectively swooned for the 8-0 preseason exhibition record with sugar plum NBA finals dreams for the locals. Talk about true media objectivity. Of course, the Bulls will contend in 2013-14. Thibs is a grinder and the team will

eventually respond.

It’s just that the Hollywood hubris Heat can be vulnerable at times (never more so than the sixth game of last year’s NBA finals against San Antonio) and the Bulls never seems to get them on those nights. Why not?

Observation No. 3: Noted Ball State graduate David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune may be the best sports columnist in town. Why then did Haugh “waste” a column Sunday on demoted Comcast SportsNet Bulls’ analyst Kendall Gill escapes me. The incident occurred in March and very little new perspective – outside of Gill’s viewpoint – was offered to the local Trib reader or Comcast audience who may still be wondering “what really happened?”.

Hitting anyone in the workplace is unacceptable, no matter the provocation. You mean eight months after the fact no one knows if the scuffle’s other “participant” – Tim Doyle – was disciplined by Comcast or the Big Ten Network? This was not journalism’s finest moment in more ways than one. In his NBA days, I wonder if Gill bragged about his martial arts training to Shaq or Charles Barkley. Just curious. Love these macho types.

Gill needs to look into his bathroom mirror. There’s the reason you lost your lucrative media gig in Chicago. Over a goaltending call in a Bulls’ game no less.

Just typing out loud.

Suggestion No. 1: If the Northern Illinois administration wants to continue enhancing its campus, the powers-that-be might want to look at renaming the four Stadium Drives adjacent to Huskie Stadium. Why not go with the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame football coaches George “Chick” Evans, Howard Fletcher, Bill Mallory, and Joe Novak? Evans Way. Fletcher Way. Mallory Way. Novak Way. Love it, perfect. All integral parts of the modern Northern Illinois football legacy. It’s a Huskies no-brainer and more than appropriate in all four cases.

Suggestion No. 2: My belated kudos to NIU intercollegiate athletics for the fabulous homecoming reunions, the re-energized hall of fame induction ceremony, and the 50th anniversary commemoration for the 1963 College Division National Championship team. Hats off to Rick Cerrone, Rodney Davis, Monique Bernoudy, Kyle Skarb, and many others.

To say the least, it was a memorable weekend for Huskies young and old. In the tailgate area, my head was on a constant swivel, surrounded by proud ex-Northern Illinois players and coaches. This is exactly what homecoming should be at NIU and shows what Doug Baker and Sean Frazier mean about alumni engagement.

For 2014, I would suggest the 25th anniversary reunion of Jerry Pettibone’s 9-2 team from 1989 that featured quarterback Stacey Robinson, fullback Adam Dach, linebacker Ron Delisi, placekicker John Ivanic, etc. The 2015 campaign marks the 50th anniversary of Huskie Stadium. I can see an updated All-Time Huskie Stadium Team (originally done in 1995 when the East Grandstand made its debut) and inviting everybody back for the weekend.

Voedisch will examine the many meanings and interpretations of eating in America through paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the 18th to 20th century.

Andrew G. Haroldson of Geneva and Adam R. Ciccone of Naperville, both upper level accountancy majors at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, have been selected to receive the Brilliant Financial Search Scholarship.

The International CSR Communication Conference brought together professionals and academics from 23 different countries to discuss new research and topics, such as the benefits and methods of communicating social responsibility in relationship to company identity, employees and leadership; consumer and media relations; issues and reputation management; and social media.

Cadillac XTS off to rousing start in sales After entering its first full year of sales, Cadillac’s XTS notched 23,772 buyers through the first nine months of 2013.

A replacement of the DTS (also STS), the XTS is a full-size luxury sedan, which matches or betters the competition from Europe or Asia in content and performance.

Although a $69,095 Vsport Platinum, the absolute top-ofthe-line model, was in for a test drive, it represented what the XTS is all about and that is luxury and performance.

Prices range from $44,000 to $72,000 but the four trim levels (base, Luxury, Premium, Platinum) share a lot of the same trim, power and comforts, including Cadillac’s CUE. CUE operates via a sensitive eight-inch color touch screen and is designed for the technologically savvy. With no knobs or buttons, owners should be able to master this information, communication and entertainment system that controls the audio, navigation, Bluetooth telephone, climate, Pandora, weather and OnStar (road assistance and advice 24-hours daily).

By waving a hand over the screen, for example, it will show an audio icon in the left hand corner. Push the icon and you can then voice your wish for sound. You can, for example, say WGN 890-AM and the radio will go to that station.

Volume is controlled by a silver bar beneath the screen and sometimes has to be pushed harder than need be to have sound increase or diminish.

Unlike the rear-wheeldrive DTS, the five-passenger, four-door XTS is either front- (base, Luxury models) or all-wheel-drive (Premium, Platinum).

AWD is essential if the $5,835 Vsport twin-turbocharged option is chosen. On

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper the tested 3.6-liter XTS V6, that option made itself known in tight passing situations and normal acceleration from stop lights. An ordinary XTS develops 304 horsepower, one with V in its name 410.

The XTS Vsport is the fullsized version of the mid-sized CTS-V four-door sedan. The V refers to increased torque and horsepower.

Acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the 4,437-pound Vsport has been tested by the automotive media in 5.2 seconds. Without the V option, the XTS can be

expected to cover 0 to 60 mph in slightly more than seven seconds.

Economy could be an issue although the tested Vsport averaged 20.1 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving with two adults aboard. The 19-gallon fuel tank can be filled with unleaded regular gasoline. If driven conservatively on the highway, the XTS might average 25 to 26 mpg.

This engine is a lot of fun and is extremely quiet and responsive. One has to be careful as highways have speed limits and just a light touch on the gas pedal can send the speedometer toward a speeding ticket.

A head-up display has the speed and direction of travel

reflected on the windshield directly in the sight line of the driver.

The disc Brembo brakes with multiple calipers are charged with bringing the XTS to a stop from 60 mph in a distance of slightly more than 120 feet. This is an OK figure for an AWD car of this size.

On the leather and metal interior, occupants are surrounded by conveniences.

Power front seats are heated and ventilated for air conditioning.

With the Platinum model, driver and passenger have memory settings. Overhead in the Platinum is a power panoramic sunroof. It covers two rows. The tilt and telescopic steering wheel maneuvers by power. Exterior mirrors

are heated and the power is directed to the curb when backing into a parking spot.

A rearview camera also helps, as well as front and rear park assist.

There are heated rear, as well as front, seats. Occupants in the rear have their own climate and audio controls, as well as reading lights. If the sun annoys, utilize the rear power sunshade.

Cadillac calls its electronic suspension system Magnetic Ride Control. In essence it sends signals to the shocks in the coil springs to adjust seamlessly to road conditions.

Competing high-end luxury vehicles have this type of a system.

OnStar has been around since 1995 and was first installed on the Cadillac Division of General Motors. Today, OnStar is available or standard equipment on virtually all GM products sold in the United States. Its hands-free uses are many but include remote door unlocking, automatic crash notification (rescue and law enforcement), stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.

For example, if lazy or in a

hurry, push the OnStar button and get connected to an OnStar employee, and ask for a nearby family restaurant. Although lockouts should be rare, they can happen. OnStar can open, remotely, the locked car door.

The XTS is an example of Cadillac’s renaissance and desire to compete in the luxury vehicle market dominated

by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. Others in that market include Acura, Infiniti, Jaguar, Audi, Volvo, Land Rover, Porsche and Lincoln.

Besides the XTS, relatively new products for Cadillac are the ATS small sedan and ELR plug-in hybrid coupe which complement a redesigned CTS and Escalade sport utility vehicle. The SRX, a mid-sized SUV, is Cadillac’s best seller.

‘Last Vegas’: A sweet deal with four cards

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Some movies are hard to approach without preconceived notions. Take “Last Vegas,” for example. The ubiquitous preview features Kevin Kline, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas partying in Sin City, which makes the movie look like a weary retread of “The Hangover,” except with Lipitor jokes. (What’s next, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn starring in a baby boomer version of “Bridesmaids”?)

But whoever is in charge of trailers for this comedy might want to try a different career path. “Last Vegas” may not deliver potent originality, but it’s much funnier than that first one-minute glimpse implies.

The actors play the self-designated Flatbush Four, a quartet of kids who grew up in Brooklyn and stayed in touch over six decades even as their fates diverged.

Sam (Kline) lives with his wife and new knee in Florida amid moribund neighbors. Archie (Freeman), having recently suffered a stroke, resides under the careful supervision of his patronizing son. Widower Paddy (De

Niro) remains rooted to an easy chair, wearing a bathrobe and surrounded by a phalanx of photos of his late wife.

And then there’s Billy (Douglas). With his taut orange face, he looks the part of a man with beachfront property in Malibu and a 31-year-old fiancee. His impending marriage is the impetus for the wild vacation.

Director Jon Turteltaub knows his way around a crowd-pleaser (he did “Cool Runnings” and “National Treasure”), and Dan Fogelman (“Crazy, Stupid, Love”) contributes a decent script. But it’s the actors, plus an exuberant Mary Steenburgen as quick-witted lounge singer Diana, who make the movie more than a middling copycat.

Kline, Freeman, De Niro and Douglas demonstrate both the easy chemistry and excitable energy of old friends reconvening after years apart, and they all genuinely seem to be having fun. Kline is especially memorable, and his comedic abilities have hardly diminished in the years since “A Fish Called Wanda.” When he can’t figure out to how to pop the trunk or unlock the doors of his rental car, he turns what could have been a trite joke into big laughs.

Not everything works so seamlessly.

Billy’s proposal to his fiancee – during a eulogy – is a scene that practically begs for an eye roll. At that moment, the prophecy of the movie’s trailer feels all too real. But when Sam and Archie hear about the proposal and give the same incredulous head shake that audience members did moments earlier, the gesture somehow makes the bizarre spectacle more palatable.

The filmmakers seem to acknowledge their own ridiculousness.

Nevertheless, seeing 60- and 70-somethings ogle 20-year-old women and judge a bikini contest is a little hard to take. But this is broad comedy, after all.

The movie aims to do little more than serve up laughter. Even the sentimental moments are couched with punch lines.

All in all, “Last Vegas” is a brisk and goofy adventure that manages to mine fanny packs and big white tennies for more laughter than it should.

Maybe baby boomer bridesmaids wouldn’t be so bad.

• The film “Las Vegas” received two and a half stars out of four. It is rated PG-13 and contains sexual content and language. The film runs 104 minutes.

Mites, mold or dander likely asthma culprit Dear Doctor K: I have asthma.

Lately my symptoms have been worse at night. Why is that?

Dear Reader: I put many questions to what I call the “grandmother test.” My mother’s mother did not have much education, but she was smart and had great common sense. Her answer to your question would have been: “There’s something in your bedroom that’s irritating your lungs.”

That’s what I think, too.

As you know, asthma is a long-term lung condition in which air passages narrow and become inflamed. This leads to breathing difficulties and wheezing.

The things in your bedroom that are most likely to trigger attacks of asthma are dust mites, mold or animal dander.

Dust mites are tiny, barely visible insects that live in our homes and feed on flakes of our skin. When you sleep, the oldest outer layer of your skin tends to come off when it rubs against the sheets. The dust mites love that.

These little critters are built of substances that irritate the air passages in our lungs.

The same is true of mold.

There is some mold in every home. Since mold likes damp places, there’s likely to be more

Individually, molds are invisible, but when millions of them grow on something, like an overripe piece of fruit, you can see them.

Cats, dogs and other animals shed their skin and hair (their dander) just as we do. Animal dander contains substances that can irritate the air passages in the lungs.

You can help control these allergens: • Clean and vacuum your bedroom frequently.

• Wash your bedding frequently in hot water.

• Remove carpets and heavy draperies from sleeping areas.

• Keep pets out of your bedroom and bathe them regularly.

Asthma sufferers can also be quite sensitive to environmental conditions. Your asthma may be reacting to air that is too hot, too cold, too moist or too dry. Experiment with adjusting the temperature and humidity in your

bedroom and see what works best for your asthma.

Another possibility is that your controller medicine is wearing off too quickly. A controller medicine, such as an inhaled corticosteroid, helps prevent asthma symptoms. Ask your doctor if you need to increase your dose, or take a dose before you go to bed.

Many people find that lying down makes them more uncomfortable, although the asthma itself isn’t worse. Try propping yourself up rather than lying flat in bed.

Finally, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) may be causing your symptoms to worsen at night. A small amount of stomach acid can come back up your esophagus and slide into your upper airways, irritating them. Try propping up the head of your bed, or ask your doctor about over-the-counter and prescription medications that can help control GERD. I’ll bet that one of these suggestions will help you – and prove that my grandmother was right!

My social worker told me my baby would be placed in a home where the couple are loving and caring. But now I’m 18, and I want my daughter returned to me. I wake up every night crying because I miss her so much. Is it possible for me to get my daughter back? Who do I see about this? – Nameless, Hammond, La. Dear Nameless: I truly understand your heartbreak, but I don’t think getting your daughter back is a realistic expectation. Nor am I certain that, even if you did, such a move would be in the child’s best interests.

Please remember that parental responsibility means, first and foremost, putting your child’s needs ahead of your own. She is now 2 years old. She’s a toddler who has by now fully bonded with her adoptive parents, and she doesn’t know you at all.

To wrench her out of the only home she has ever known, and away from the parents she loves, would be deeply traumatizing for her. Is getting her back worth that?

By all means, discuss your feelings with your social worker. You’re also free to contact an attorney, but I doubt that any court would reverse an adoption unless there was evidence of child abuse, which is unlikely.

Be thankful that your daughter is in a loving home. Contact with her may be possible later, if the adoptive parents agree, but I wouldn’t hope for more than that.

Dr. Wallace: My cousin is a 17-year-old guy. When I saw him

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace at a family gathering a week ago I had not seen him in over a year. I was absolutely in shock to see how skinny and gaunt he looked. I was almost certain that he had a drug addiction and my parents thought so, too. But later my aunt told my mom that Kenny was anorexic and that he was going into a psychiatric hospital for treatment in a few days.

When I spoke with my cousin at the party, I just talked about school and sports, but didn’t say a word about how skinny he was.

I think I read somewhere that anorexia is a female eating disorder.

I’m wondering if his mother is aware of this, or if she’s trying to cover up the real problem, which still might be drugs. – Nameless, Iowa City, Iowa Dear Nameless: It’s true that the great majority of people who suffer from the eating disorder anorexia nervosa (self starvation) are females – up to 95 percent, according to the American Medical Association. That means 5 percent of anorexics are male. Your cousin could very well be one of them.

Most young men who are anorexic are under great pressure from family members to succeed, while females usually put pressure on themselves to be thin.

Dear Abby: I have been divorced five years and have five children, ranging in age from 23 to 8. When I was having trouble with my middle son, “Logan,” I found help from his godfather, “Carl.” I hadn’t seen Carl in years. He was my ex’s best friend when Logan was born.

Long story short, Carl and I have been in a committed relationship for two years now.

He has been more a part of our lives than my ex has. Four of my kids love Carl, and he is very involved in their lives.

Logan, however, hates him and throws a fit if his name is mentioned. I have tried to explain that I didn’t intend this to happen, but Logan feels I “took away his godfather from him.”

Carl is still there for him, but Logan will have none of it and refuses to listen.

However, yielding can be fatal at the bridge table. It is true that some temptations that ought to be avoided do not prove to be lethal, because the cards forgive – unlike in today’s deal.

Many players would go down in four hearts and, with some justification, complain about their bad luck. But if the only job is to make the contract and not to worry about overtricks, there is a line of play that guarantees success – why ignore it?
