The Goldmine jewelry store to close, owners to retire On the Web

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The owners of a longtime St. Charles jewelry store have decided to start another chapter in their lives.

Jay Montgomery and his wife, Lynn, announced they will retire at the end of this year and will close their store, The Goldmine, at 213 W. Main St., St. Charles. The store will close Dec. 31.

The couple first opened the store in St. Charles in January 1983, when they were newlyweds.

“I love the customers; I love the products,” said Montgomery, 56. “I’m going to miss a lot of that … but I don’t want to work the rest of my life.”

The store currently is holding a retirement sale, where all inventory is 40 percent to 60 percent off through Oct. 31. Montgomery plans to make further price reductions during November and December.

Montgomery knew from the time he had his first paper route he wanted to be self-employed.

“I worked for a guy in the gold and jewelry business, and that’s what stuck – that’s what I wanted to do,” he said.

The Goldmine grew

through gaining the trust of its customers and investing the profits back into the business, Montgomery said.

Montgomery is glad The Goldmine stayed in the same location since 1983, declining offers to move to the west side St. Charles Mall and also the

Charlestowne Mall.

“Whether you’re going to buy a piece of jewelry or a hamburger … you want a good, quality product, a good price and good service,” Montgomery said. “That’s what people wanted today; that’s what people wanted 33 years ago.”

Montgomery said he has been blessed professional and personally. He said he missed only six days of work in the past three decades.

Although he is open to returning to work if he misses it enough, Montgomery and his wife plan to spend more time outside and down south during the Illinois winters.

“You never know what the future will bring,” he said.

COVER STORY ‘SHOCKING AND DEVASTATING’ St. Charles Horticulture Research Center hit hard by reallocation of resources

The St. Charles Horticulture Research Center – an 100-acre site at Peck Road and Route 38 – includes research space for Ph.D. students, plots tended to by master gardeners, three acres of wine grapes and a high tunnel – a type of greenhouse – filled with specialty peppers and 22 varieties of heirloom tomatoes.

Come March, Henning doesn’t know what will become of the property, which is part of the Department of Crop Sciences in the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.

The St. Charles research center is one of four such sites affected by a reallocation of resources. Henning – who is one of two staff members at the St. Charles site – said he recently received notice his last day will be in mid-March.

His colleague is due to wrap up in December, he said.

Neal Merchen, associate dean for research at the College of ACES, recently told the Daily Chronicle state funding has been dwindling since 2003.

This year, he said, the university faces a 7.5 percent budget cut, which equals about $3.7 million.

“Until now, with the exception of some minor changes, we have not had to inflict this kind of reduction to off-campus centers,” Merchen told the Daily Chronicle. “But we simply can’t get by without doing that any longer.”

Crop research facilities in DeKalb, Brownstown and Dixon Springs also are affected by the reductions, although Dixon Springs will retain research in beef cattle and forestry.

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe [in] it,” Henning said.

Diane Handley, manager of the Illinois Specialty Growers Association, said it was “shocking and devastating” to hear about the research center closures.

“Obviously, it will have a huge negative impact on the specialty crop industry,” she said. “We rely more heavily on the university than most commodity groups.”

Handley noted the research conducted in the high tunnels

– which have no heat or electricity – has been especially

important because that’s the future of the industry.

Without the university research centers, she said, the ISGA has no choice but to rely on other states.

Merchen told the Daily Chronicle it is unclear what will happen to the research center property.

“The current information that has been communicated is that a decision has been made [regarding cutbacks],” he said. “We have more work to do over the next several months concerning land, equipment and continued maintenance of the buildings.”

Wredling died Saturday at his home. He was 101.

The former St. Charles School District 303 superintendent had a school named after him, Wredling Middle School. He not only celebrated his birthday with the students but also led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance on the first day of school.

A World War II veteran, Wredling was a charter member of St. Charles VFW Post 5036 and was active in the Boy Scouts and the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club.

OBITUARIES ANNE PITZ

Born: Nov. 19, 1917; in Elburn, IL Died: Oct. 8, 2015; in Batavia, IL Anne (Benson) Pitz, age 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at Michealsen Health Center in Batavia, in the presence of her children.

Anne was born on Nov. 19, 1917, the daughter of John Alfred and Mary (Johnson) Benson, on the family farm on Beith Road near Elburn. Later, the family moved to a farm at the corner of Bliss and Main Street near Batavia. She graduated from Batavia High School, where she met her future husband, Wendell E. Pitz, and then worked at Howell Company, St. Charles.

On Sept. 17, 1942, she married Wendell and they were blessed with six children. Anne and Wendell were proud that their six children completed college. She was a loving, kind and patient mother, devoted to her family. As her children married, she welcomed her in-laws into the family and was never happier than when her large extended family was together. She enjoyed golf, cooking, fishing, gardening and bridge with her club of 60 years. She was a devout Catholic and member of St.

Faivre said he was sad when he heard of the pastor’s death.

“I do miss him,” Faivre said. “He was a good mentor, but he was a greater friend to me than anything. ... He was definitely a great man.”

was “wonderful.” She said the church had searched for more than two years for a pastor before bringing him on, and she said those at the church were “thrilled to have him.”

Carl Diesel, Karen Diesel’s husband, works as a custodian at the church. He said Bennett McNeal was “a kind man, a very fair man.”

“His knowledge of the Bible was unbelievable,” Carl Diesel said. “He answered some questions effectively that I had never gotten answers for before.”

Carl Diesel said the pastor worked to help the church building add equipment to make it more accessible for those with disabilities.

“He had a lot of ideas,” Carl Diesel said. “He was trying to increase the congregation. …

He was doing everything he could to increase the congregation.”

Another church member,

Chris Pangborn, wrote in an email the pastor “made everyone feel like a partner in the church’s work. He listened respectfully to opinions, whether he agreed with them or not, and he always found something to value in each person.”

“If it were possible to issue him a new middle name, it would be ‘How can I help?’ ” Pangborn added. “He helped many people, in his church or outside it, heal from sad circumstances and events.”

Mary Royer, the church council moderator, wrote in an email she was “privileged to work with Pastor Ben for most of his three years in Elburn.”

“In the time he was here, I became his friend and was so proud to have that role,” Royer added. “I miss him, his smile and ready wit. He was a good man in every sense of the word.”

ELBURN – During his time at Elburn Community Congregational Church, the Rev. Bennett McNeal left his mark, friends, family and parishioners said.

“Pastor Ben” served as the church’s pastor for the past three years, and one member said he spearhead- The Rev. ed several key Bennett efforts, such McNeal as a blessing of the pets program, an increased presence during Elburn Days and a push for greater awareness in the community. The pastor died Sept. 27 at the age of 69.

He recently had health issues, including a heart condition, but he remained active

at the church through this year, church members said.

Andrea McNeal, the pastor’s wife, said her husband didn’t launch into the career until he was 51 years old. She said he would urge people not to wait that long to follow their passions. Andrea McNeal described the time spent at the Elburn church as “tremendous.”

“He loved the people in Elburn,” Andrea McNeal said.

“They were incredibly wonderful, nice people. They welcomed us with open arms.”

She said her husband was devoted to his family and was “the kindest person I had ever met in my entire life.” She said his father had died at age

Elburn and Batavia residents should expect some of their roads to be temporarily busy early Sunday afternoon as a police-escorted motorcycle parade makes its way to the Batavia VFW. The route will be part of the DuKane ABATE 29th Annual Toy and Food Run, according to a news release. The parade will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Sunday starting at Knuckleheads in Elburn. It will travel south on Route 47 and turn at Main Street to head east into Batavia.

The route will turn on Van Nortwick and again at Wilson Street in Batavia, proceeding across the river to Route 25 and ending at the Batavia VFW, 645 River Road, Batavia.

The St. Charles police and fire departments at 1:55 p.m.

Thursday were dispatched to the crash, which occurred on East Main Street at Mall Drive in St. Charles, Deputy Police Chief David Kintz wrote in an email.

Daniela Martinez, 24, of Dixon Avenue in Elgin, drove a 2011 Jeep Liberty through a red light on Main Street and struck a 2015 Honda CR-V driven by a 32-year-old Hanover Park woman, Kintz wrote.

The Hanover Park woman was heading west on Main Street and had a green arrow to turn south into a shopping center, he wrote. She was taken from the scene for injuries not considered to be life-threatening at the time of the crash, Kintz wrote.

Martinez was ticketed for disobeying the traffic control signal, treated and released at

the scene, Kintz wrote.

‘You got it’

I wonder if anyone else obsesses RIVER TOWN over stock phrases indifferently or CHRONICLES disingenuously delivered. And I’m not even talking about the worst Rick offenders, like: Holinger • “How are you?” This conversation non-starter has been around so long, even Australopithecus africanus only grunted in reply; even their small brains understood the speaker did not require – desire – an answer beyond “fine,” if that. It ceased being a question by the time Dante wrote “The Inferno,” wherein he created a special circle in Hell for those who used the greeting; said sinners were subject to listening for eternity not to the phrase itself, but to the damned people who took the question literally, listing a monopoly of maladies.

• “S’up?” For those living in caves or BMWs for the past few decades, this is a shortened, slang version of “What’s up?” S’up?’s effect, once cool and hip, today exposes its speaker as merely a hipster wannabe.

No, the phrase that really rankles last surfaced when our family finished ordering a lettuce wrap, miso soup and sushi rolls.

“You got it,” our server said.

There. That one. “You got it.”

I was tempted to tell him: “Yes, I know, sir; we just ordered it. I remember. Do you think I’ll give you a bigger tip because you promised to bring me my order? That you’d go so far as to let the kitchen know our food wants and bring out our dishes when prepared?”

What bugs me even more is the tone of voice, saying, “You got it,” like he’s doing you a favor by retrieving “it.” Like they’ve made an existential choice worthy of Camus or Beckett to deliver “it” to your table.

Naturally, when I voice my annoyance, my family objects to my objection. They imply I’m being petty, perhaps even bellicose. Can you imagine?

Or take another annoying response, one inevitably heard after revealing I teach English and write a bunch of stuff.

“Oh,” the listener gasps, “I better watch my grammar!”

Well, no, you really don’t, because if you tell me you are a lawyer, I won’t immediately respond: “Oooh, I better not kill anyone”; “I better not cheat on my taxes”; or “I better not lie about my golf handicap.” Moreover, if you tell me you’re a doctor, I won’t ask for a free consultation on how to manage back pain – unless the subject arises.

Full disclosure: I, too, am guilty of deploying annoying phrases that drive people up the wall. Like, “drive people up the wall.”

My favorite verbal ploy I use comes when people my age, in their 60s or older, mis-hear or miss hearing altogether what someone says and ask, “What?” To which the person who’s been talking responds with, “You need to get your hearing checked.”

Then, even though hearing it perfectly well, I yell, “What?”

“That stopped being funny,” my wife will say, “after the thousandth time you said it. You really should get your hearing checked.”

OK, sweetie. You got it.

Time to pile on Cubs playoff bandwagon With the potential for the Cubs’ playoff run to end the same night as it started, it seemed only natural for fans to be a bit guarded in getting their hopes up.

But after pitcher Jake Arrieta’s masterful complete-game shutout in the Cubs’ 4-0 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the playoff opener on Wednesday, it is officially time to pile on the Cubs playoff bandwagon.

The next stop is St. Louis, where the Cubs will open a best-of-five series against the rival Cardinals at Busch Stadium tonight at 5:45 p.m. in a game you can see on TBS. Remarkably, this will be the first postseason series between the Cubs and Cardinals. Well, maybe it’s not so remarkable, given the Cubs’ well-known

track record of futility.

But this Cubs team has nothing to do with those past disappointments. It is a team with a great story, with many new, fresh faces stepping into the spotlight for the first time under the guidance of a veteran manager in Joe Maddon.

They win games in bunches, compiling the third-best record in the National League.

In a year where most everyone expected the Cubs roster filled with players in their early 20s would be developing, the team has blown away expectations.

Kyle Schwarber, whose two-run homer was the big blow in the Cubs’ win against the Pirates, is a rookie who hit his way onto the team for good in July. (Remember him, Kane County Cougars

fans?)

Kris Bryant also wasn’t with the team at the start of the season, but made up for lost time by driving in 99 runs this season. First baseman Anthony Rizzo has been the constant for the club, a leader who had 31 home runs and 101 RBIs this year.

Since the Cubs acquired him from Baltimore for next to nothing in 2013, Jake Arrieta was the most dominant pitcher in baseball in the second half of this season. If he doesn’t win the Cy Young Award, it’ll be a shame.

It’s been seven years since the Cubs played in mid-October, and more than a lifetime since they won it all.

It can’t go on forever.

This could be the year.

No matter what happens, enjoy it while it lasts.

Back from injury, Marmion QB Tate vows to leave mark on program

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com This football season has looked like an unfamiliar one for Marmion right from the get-go. While the wins and losses have not gone as planned, the 2-4 Cadets have a team of 23 players that take the field every week.

This requires many players to not only play offense and defense, but on special teams, as well.

When the numbers are that low, any injuries can prove more costly than normal, which is why Cadets coach Dan Thorpe had his heart drop when starting quarterback Johnny Tate limped off the field in a Week 3 home loss to St. Francis.

Not only was Tate held out of the rest of that game, but he was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain and was forced to miss the following week’s loss to reigning Class 7A state champion Providence.

“I felt something in my ankle pop, so I knew something was wrong,” Tate said. “The trainer immediately shut me down. You never want to get injured, but I was fortunate that nothing was broken and I was able to recover in the time that I did.”

After a game with junior Collin Gibson at the helm, the Cadets have their starter back.

Tate missed only one game because of a forfeit win in Week 5. Tate would not have been able to play if the Cadets had found an opponent.

Tate, a St. Charles native, returned last Saturday afternoon as Marmion took on Fenwick, and although the Cadets suffered a 42-21 loss, Thorpe saw no after-effects of Tate’s injury.

Thorpe said Tate’s work ethic goes beyond rehabbing from an ankle injury, but carried over from an offseason where he made the full-time commitment to be Marmion’s quarterback.

During the summer, Tate drove to Chicago for quarterback camps and opportunities to throw and train with other high school signal-callers.

Aside from that, Thorpe said Tate would throw four or five days a week to several receivers whenever he could.

One of them Nick Funk, who also lives in St. Charles, has been good friends with Tate since middle school, going back to their days playing

pee-wee football.

Funk expected to be a contributor at wide receiver this year before tearing his ACL in 7-on-7 camp this summer.

Also a senior, Funk realizes he probably won’t play football again, but he was able to help Tate while he sat out the game he anticipated most on this season’s schedule.

“The Providence game was one I was looking forward to quite a bit,” Tate said. “Injuries [stink], but they are part of the game. I did everything I could to support the guys that were able to be out there. But there’s no question it was definitely tough for me to not be able to go out there.”

“I knew what he was going through,” Funk said. “I’ve had to do it every game for these first five we’ve had. I know it’s

not fun, and I could tell it hurt him to not be out there. But, it was more important, and I think he knows this, that it was more important for him to get his ankle healthy so he could come back and contribute here at the end of the season.”

Tate came back to throw for 283 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Fenwick, but there was some rust that brought turnovers with it.

Thorpe said he expects Tate to be much more sharp tonight after another week of practice.

“I think it’s hard for anyone, but especially a quarterback to come back after an injury where he had it,” Thorpe said. “He looked mobile and there were definitely a lot of good things he did. As a team, we just haven’t had success in

the red zone and can’t finish off drives.”

Tate said any limitations are gone, and his ankle feels “awesome.”

Seniors such as Tate and Funke always want to leave their mark on a program, and although the Cadets aren’t having the exact season that Tate probably envisioned, he knows there still is time to make an impact.

“Bottom line now is going out there to prove a point,” Tate said. “We don’t have the biggest guys or the most guys, that’s for sure, but we have the heart. We’ve worked too hard to just give up on the season.

We have seen what we are capable of and I worked hard to make sure I could come back and help this team win because they deserve it.”

CANDRE ON THE MEND A scary incident in the St. Charles East/Geneva game last week saw Saints senior kicker/ receiver Nick Candre take a hard hit and be transported via ambulance off Burgess Field on Friday night.

All of Candre’s scans came back negative, which was good news for East. Candre will take two weeks off from contact before hoping to resume play in the final week of the regular season when the Saints head to East Aurora.

PLAYOFF WATCH Kaneland and East need wins.

It’s that simple. The Saints (2-4) must win out, defeating Larkin, St. Charles North and East Aurora to get to five wins and be playoff eligible.

Kaneland (3-3) would really like to take care of business at Morris this week, or it will be in a similar spot as East, needing to win its final two games to be eligible, hosting La Salle-Peru before visiting Rochelle to close the season.

The buzz in the stands

Geneva will be unsure exactly what to expect when it heads to Lombard tonight for the Upstate Eight Conference crossover game. Not only has Rob Wicinski never traveled to Glenbard East as coach of the Vikings, but the Rams have had an up-anddown season.

There is no doubt that Glenbard East can put the ball in the end zone, averaging 40 points a game, but the Rams still sit at 4-2.

The Rams allowed 61 points to South Elgin last week in a loss, and 41 to Glenbard North in a Week 4 loss. Geneva was nearly upset on its homecoming last week, but escaped with a 27-26 win over St. Charles East to remain unbeaten.

“We know (the Rams) are a very good football team, with some weapons, and we kind of view this as a second or third round playoff game,” Wicinski said. “Having never been there, our whole program is looking forward to the test.”

The marquee matchup

Rams coach John Walters loves the fact that he doesn’t have one standout receiver.

He has four that contribute and make it almost impossible to shut down the passing game. Senior quarterback Phil Abruzino has four fellow senior weapons, including a pair of 6-foot-2 wideouts in Zach Walsh and Travis Lyles. But Karon Keyes has been Glenbard East’s go-to guy, while Mitch Luttrell also contributes.

Wicinski knows the defense will have to get pressure on Abruzino to force mistakes, but it will be in the hands of defensive backs Donny Friedel and Alec Keating to lock down and make completing passes difficult.

“It’s hard to take away everything,” Walters said. “If you take away the outsides,

our slot guys find room. So we like that we have a good group of experienced guys on the outside to complement a good running game.”

If Geneva can continue what Wicinski calls a “bend-but-not-break” defensive mentality, the Vikings should make developing a rhythm tough for the Rams.

X-factor

Both coaches have stressed the importance of holding onto the football. Wicinski always talks about winning the turnover battle in every game, but that requires holding onto the ball and not turning this one into a shootout. Walters said close to 28 points of the 61 the Rams allowed last week came from their own mistakes, giving their opponent great field position.

Also, don’t expect Geneva to punt the football. Wicinski doesn’t care if the ball is on his own 10-yard-line, or anywhere on the field, he doesn’t plan to punt the football tonight.

“I want to hold onto the ball as long as possible,” Wicinski said. “If we get the big plays, great, but our plan is to wear them down with long drives to keep their offensive weapons off the field as often as possible.”

Likewise for Walters and Glenbard East.

They would also like to keep the ball out of Geneva quarterback Sean Chambers’ hands, as well as running back Justin Taormina. The senior duo causes concerns from Walters, and one way to not get beat is to have them on the sidelines as much as possible.

“If we can limit big plays, and force them into long drives to earn their points, we like that style of play,” Walters said.

Wicinski wants to dictate the tempo, so an early lead and turnover could make the difference in what I think will be a tight game.

Best case-scenario for the Rams

Protecting the ball will be vital. Allowing 61 points would make you think this week was defense, defense, and more defensive work from the Rams, but that wasn’t it. Glenbard East shot itself in the foot with tipped passes that were intercepted, but Walters said allowing big plays was an issue. If the Rams dictate the tempo, protect the football and limit big plays defensively, they like their chances to give Geneva its first loss of 2015.

Geneva 38, Glenbard East 35 I look to get back on track after suffering my first loss of the season. Another UEC River team, playing on the road in unfamiliar territory, you’d have to think I’d take Glenbard East, right? I’ll take Chambers and the Vikings to stay focused, in a very tight game and come away with the win to improve to 7-0. With a big game next week, the Vikings need to come out strong mentally and limit the mistakes it made last week.

Geneva stays calm when it matters most and will make a couple more plays that will be the difference. A late turnover will prove costly for the Rams and aid Geneva staying unbeaten.

The skinny: The good news for Marmion is starting quarterback Johnny Tate returned from an ankle injury against Fenwick.

The skinny: As if Elgin wasn’t already enough of an underdog, Batavia comes into this matchup after suffering its first loss of the season. Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron will use this game to correct some of the mistakes made against Naperville Central, but the Maroons will be outmatched in this one.

The idea of overlooking the game, with the River Division title looming next week in a showdown at Geneva, will not be an issue for the team’s senior leaders.

“We can’t wait to get back in the field,” receiver Canaan Coffey said. “(Last week) hurt pretty bad and we don’t want to have that feeling anymore.”

Multiple components complete a car’s electric system, explains Seith Swanson, manager and master mechanic, Geneva Repair Shop, Batavia. The battery, alternator, and starter are the top three.

Swanson says, “The battery provides energy to the starter, after it’s powered from the alternator. The battery provides the car’s electrical current to start the car. The starter gets the engine going. As the car runs, the alternator maintains the battery’s charge.”

This process helps power the car’s lights, windshield wipers, radio, defroster, and other accessories.

Swanson adds, “Fuel-powered cars run on a 12-volt battery, which lasts about three to five years, depending on use and care. It costs about $150 to replace. In contrast, an electric car runs on a 144-volt battery that lasts about 10 years. Re-

placement costs were originally $5,000, but today are about $2,900.”

Driving in extremely hot or cold weather reduces battery life. Swanson says that a regular (non-electric) car battery can be charged about seven times, before it no longer works. Each time a car needs to be jumped shortens the battery’s life.

Accidentally leaving the car lights on overnight and discovering a dead battery in the morning is bad enough. Doing that in winter is worse, as dead batteries freeze, and can’t be jumped until they thaw out.

“A weak or dead battery can harm the alternator or starter.

Signs of trouble may be dimming lights. Sometimes there’s no warning, so changing a battery every three to five years as preventative maintenance is wise.”

Other advice to preserve your car’s electrical system: “Don’t drive through deep standing water. Back out if possible. Some of the car’s 30+ computer systems are under the car seats, plus other electrical wires can corrode when immersed in water.”

NOTEWORTHY Confident North keeps rolling

Volley for the Cure Night and Clinch the Upstate Eight Conference River Division Night coincided for St. Charles North on Tuesday.

As one North Stars veteran tells it, dovetailing the two was almost elementary.

“We knew what was on the line and we really came out,” senior right side/ setter Jaclyn Taylor said. “We’ve been really focusing on not having such a slow start, because that’s been a trend to our season. The atmosphere was great and that’s what we thrive off of, and that got us going from point one.”

North shared the league crown in 2014, but has staggered each of its River opponents this fall, namely fellow contenders St. Charles East (Tuesday) and Geneva (Sept. 8) in two sets.

Entering the season, it was no secret North would rely on its senior core of Taylor, outside hitters Claire Anderson and Daley and defensive specialist Sam Lappin, who each have shared a court since their youth. So far, so good.

“This year, I feel like it’s our last shot to play together,” Taylor said. “We just want to end on a strong note, especially with coach (Lindsey) Hawkins. We’re all really close with her, so we just want to make sure it’s the best one yet.”

Playoff anticipation

IHSA postseason pairings are set to be

One of the more suspenseful announcements figures to be St. Francis’ placement in its first Class 4A draw.

The Spartans, who have won the past three 3A titles, were bumped up in class this fall, although the transition hardly has fazed veteran coach Peg Kopec.

“You get cards every year. A different set of cards every year,” Kopec said.

“It’s true. You try to put them together so that they are able to utilize their best talents, plus teach them some new things. That’s a coach’s job.”

St. Francis already knows it will be a regional host in the East Aurora Sectional, a distinction shared by St. Charles East.

Waubonsie Valley and Plainfield North also are regional hosts within the sectional complex, whose 22 teams include Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles North.

“We know wherever we land we’re going to have to work just as hard,” Taylor said, “because there are a lot of good teams in the sectional.”

In 3A, Kaneland and Burlington Central both have been assigned to the Sycamore Sectional, albeit in different sub sectionals.

Rosary is part of the 3A Glenbard South Sectional.

Royal pains, postseason gains?

Rosary and St. Francis met for the first time as Girls Catholic Athletic Confer-

ence rivals Tuesday, but the differences in the longstanding rivalry didn’t stop there in Royals coach Rachel Hartmann’s view.

“We hung with Francis at times, but overall, I think it was kind of an uneventful match,” Hartmann said of Rosary’s 25-19, 25-18 road loss. “There wasn’t a ton of rallies or huge plays. The gym kind of felt somewhat quiet, which at Francis is unusual.”

Joining the GCAC after the incremental dissolution of the Suburban Christian Conference introduced numerous new opponents to the Royals’ schedule.

Hovering around .500, Rosary awaits several more traditionally tough foes at this weekend’s Mizuno Cup, hosted by East at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora.

“It’s a great tournament, lots of great teams that play, so it’ll be interesting to see,” Hartmann said. “We’ve had a few tough losses in a row here, so the competition is going to stay high even this weekend. So we’ll be challenged, but I hope to see the girls respond in a good way.”

As if taking a step back and uttering, “Ladies first,” boys golfers from Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North played a relatively unfamiliar regional course, The Highlands of Elgin, in a bid to advance to the well-known layout of St. Andrews in West Chicago for 3A sectionals.

Conversely, girls from each of the Tri-Cities schools and Burlington Central traveled to regionals at Sycamore Golf Club for the second successive fall. Those who advanced are headed for a course many have not seen since their youth, if at all – Cog Hill No. 1 in Lemont, site of the AA Oak Park-River Forest Sectional.

“A lot of people are saying that it’s really hard,” Batavia sophomore Madi McCoy said. “I think I’ll go out this weekend and play it a couple times.”

North junior Kate Lillie, the regional medalist with a 71, offers reassurance based on her experiences from summer tournaments of a few years ago.

“It’s not the most difficult course in the world,” she said, “so it should be pretty good.”

Then there’s East junior Kacie Gaffney, whose Cog Hill reconnaissance lies somewhere in between. She experienced some of the course, but not all, while competing in a Drive, Chip & Putt subregional in August 2014.

“Just revisiting old memories,” Gaffney grinned.

The boys field has plenty of those when it comes to St. Andrews. East officially will host the sectional, but it was Geneva’s turn to entertain when the Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament descended on the course on Sept. 30.

Recently promoted from the junior varsity then, Saints sophomore Mason Meadows contributed East’s third-best score at conference, a 79.

St. Charles East sophomore Nicole Jordan is hoping to advance from Monday’s Class AA Oak Park-River Forest Sectional at Cog Hill No. 1 in Lemont to next weekend’s state tournament. Her older sister, Paige, qualified for state on the same course in 2011.

“It proves that I’m able to play at that level, that I should be up here on varsity,” Meadows said.

East scored a 310 to Geneva’s 313 that day to clip the Vikings, who won the teams’ dual meet, and vaulted atop the conference standings.

At regionals, however, the Vikings returned the favor, turning in a season-low 292 that topped the runner-up Saints by 17 strokes.

“We’re starting to peak at the right time just getting down the stretch, and our scores are getting better and better,” said Geneva freshman Jack McDonald, who shot an even-par 72 at The Highlands and defeated East’s Daniel Haugen in a medalist playoff. “Hopefully, on Mon-

day we can go just as low.”

One of five North boys individuals to advance to sectionals, Kurtzhals scored for the Fox Valley Hawks boys hockey team – comprising players from each of the Tri-Cities schools and Kaneland – in Sunday’s season-opening romp against Kankakee.

Also a boys tennis athlete in the spring, Kurtzhals finds a common bond between golf and hockey, just as many professional pucksters do.

“They kind of overlap as far as swing-wise,” Kurtzhals said. “I still have enough time to do both. I’m focused on golf right now, and I’ll focus on

hockey when hockey season comes.”

Chip-ins: Jack-of-all-coaching-trades Doug Ross, guiding the Geneva girls for the second season in his fifth sport at the school, has made strides in tandem with his sectional-bound team.

“With Ross, he really likes to win,” senior Reilly Krohe said.

Ross beamed when Geneva exorcised some regional demons by taking third and advancing to sectionals as a team. In 2014, the Vikings missed that cutoff by one stroke, and this season has featured more of an aggressive atmosphere at practices.

“I know that everybody wants their scorecard to count, and I never once ever

feel with this group that there’s just a couple of them out there,” Ross said. “They’re not thinking about, ‘Oh, well, if I don’t do well, so what?’

They all want their scorecard to count. They all are competitive, and they all want to do the best they can.

“That’s the greatest part of it, just knowing how competitive they are.”

Teammate and classmate Tyler Isenhart, the UEC River Player of the Year, went to Geneva Middle School South.

“We sort of knew each other,” McDonald said. “We didn’t play (together) too much until this year, and now we’re good friends and play a lot. It’s been fun.”

St. Charles Kiwanis Club awards grants KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Three grants awarded by the St. Charles Kiwanis Club for the month of September all center on elevating the human spirit.

One grant was awarded to Companions Journeying Together, which began in 1985 to help children of inmates at the Kane County Jail, a news release stated.

The Aunt Mary Storybook Program records inmates as they read to their children, allowing for a reconnection of the parent-child bond.

Another grant went to Horsepower Therapeutic Riding, which began three years ago with five students and now has more than 50,

the release stated. Therapeutic horseback riding is provided through the organization to children and adults with physical and emotional disabilities. One third of riders pay reduced rates, and no one is turned away because of financial concerns, the release stated.

Last, a grant was awarded to the Humanitarian Service Project, which helps needy families in the area with groceries, personal-care items and toys. The Children’s Birthday Project delivers a 25-pound box of gifts to children ages 3 to 11. Its contents are toys, books, school supplies and a “party in a bag,” which has everything needed for a birthday party, the release stated.

ST. CHARLES – Matthew Jacob Kramer is set to earn the rank of Eagle Scout on Sunday.

He is the son of Andy and Nicola Kramer, and brother to Elizabeth.

Matthew began his Scouting career as a Tiger Cub at Wasco Elementary School with Pack 150, a news release stated.

After earning the Arrow of Light award in fifth grade, he crossed over to Troop 10 and became a Boy Scout. During the past seven years, he has moved up the ranks from Tenderfoot to – on Sunday – Eagle. He has earned 28 badges in many different areas, including the required 13 for Eagle, the release stated. He has attended Boy Scout camp in a variety of states and four Boy Scout high adventure camps, which include: • Backpacking in 2012 in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado; • Sea kayaking in 2013 in North Carolina; • Sailing a catamaran in 2014 in the Bahamas from Sea Base;

Matthew’s Eagle project was completed at Garfield Farm near St. Charles, and was a multiphase project that took more than 200 man hours and spanned eight days, the release stated.

“He had to break down and move a huge pile of concrete

and rubble; clear a farm courtyard of weeds and waste; empty a 100-year-old barn of debris, dirt and machinery; clean and reorganize the contents into a manageable system; build and hang two wooden farm gates; and build and hang a Dutchstyle barn door,” the release stated. “All this was the groundwork for the restoration of a farm complex.”

Through the project, Matthew learned organization, leadership, budgeting and “sheer hard work,” the release stated.

He is very grateful and would like to thank all of the friends, Scouts and family who volunteered their time to help him at the farm. He especially would like to thank Tom Greiter, who was his mentor on the project and donated many hours of help. In addition, he would like to thank Jerry Johnson of Garfield Farm for his assistance and those businesses that donated to the project: Lowes and Ace Hardware.

Matthew is a senior at St. Charles North High School and currently is applying to college to study computer science.

baby sleep through the night Dear Dr. K: My 9-monthold is still waking up three to four times during the night. How can I get her to sleep through the night?

Dear Reader: By the time a baby is 4 or 5 months old, he or she is capable of sleeping through the night. We tend to think of “sleeping through the night” as a long stretch of uninterrupted sleep. But in reality, all babies wake up during the night. Some discover their own way of comforting themselves and getting back to sleep.

Others must be taught.

Different experts recommend different techniques for helping your baby get to sleep and then to sleep through the night. Ask your pediatrician what he or she recommends, or do some research on your own to see which technique best fits with your parenting philosophy.

Despite the differences, most experts agree on the following points: • Establish a consistent daily schedule of sleeping, feeding, bathing and playing times.

• Babies benefit from a regular bedtime routine.

• A good sleep environment consists of a dark (but not too dark) and quiet room.

• A transitional object, such as a soft toy or blanket, can help an older infant fall asleep.

• A baby should be put to bed when drowsy, but not yet asleep so she can learn to fall asleep on her own.

• Make nighttime visits boring for your baby. Feed your baby if she is hungry, but not if she is looking for comfort. Change her diaper if it is soiled or very wet.

Otherwise, offer only a minimum of stimulation.

• Let a fussy baby lie, and see if she falls back asleep on her own.

• If your baby is accustomed to nighttime feedings, eliminate them

Even babies who learn to sleep through the night may go through periods of night awakenings, particularly around 8 or 9 months old.

“Separation anxiety” first appears at this age.

This is a time when your baby is learning new motor skills, such as crawling, sitting, standing and climbing. Being separated from you, combined with the excitement of practicing her new skills, may interrupt your baby’s normal sleep pattern. Consider calling to her, rather than stopping in to soothe her. Some babies benefit from having their nursery door kept open a crack, so they can hear you.

A patient of mine whose first baby was not a good sleeper once asked me if that meant the baby would continue to have sleep problems later in life. I checked with a pediatrician colleague. I learned young children (older than infants) and teenagers indeed can have sleep disorders like those that affect adults.

That includes difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, sleepiness during the daytime, snoring or abnormal movements and behaviors during sleep.

Fortunately, these sleep problems are no more likely to occur in kids who were fitful sleepers when they were infants. That’s one less thing to worry about as you are wondering if you’ll be allowed to sleep through the night.

Frequency of drinking, not just amount, is sign of alcoholism Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend is not a heavy drinker, but he does like a couple of beers every night. I have never seen him drunk or even tipsy.

My father doesn’t drink any kind of alcohol whatsoever, and he despises those who do, because both of his parents were alcoholics who died relatively young due to their drinking habits. Dad doesn’t like me seeing Josh because one day he smelled alcohol on his breath. Josh told Dad he has a couple of beers a day, but has his alcohol intake under control. My dad thinks two drinks a day qualifies the drinker as an alcoholic.

Please tell my dad he is misinformed. Two beers is not a lot to drink in a day.

Some of Josh’s friends drink a six-pack of beer a day. – Sherry, Ames, Iowa Sherry: Someone can be

considered an alcoholic not only by the amount he drinks but also by how often. Since your boyfriend consumes alcohol daily, he has, by definition, a drinking problem. He could very well be an alcoholic, or on his way to be-

Sometimes in the auction at a bridge table, one player knows where to go and immediately names the final contract. But in particular in competitive sequences, it pays to anticipate further enemy action.

Look at today’s South hand. He opens one spade, and his partner raises to two spades. What should South rebid after East (a) passes or (b) overcalls three clubs?

If East stays out of the auction, South ought to make a three-heart game-try, expecting partner to bid game with his values in the majors.

But South might shoot out four spades.

When East enters the auction, though, it is time to call on partner’s opinion. Now South must show his heart suit, so that North can judge what to do if the opponents bid higher.

Here, over three hearts by South, West will presumably raise to four clubs. Then North will continue with four spades, and probably East will bid five clubs as an each-way bet – maybe it will make, or it might be a cheap sacrifice.

After South passes, North should go on to five spades because of his side’s double fit. East will double, and South will go down two, minus 300.

This is cheaper than five clubs bid and made for plus 400.
