Primrose Farm events pack in farm fun

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com If an apple a day can keep the doctor away, just imagine what an afternoon spent at Primrose Farm’s orchard can do for one’s health.

A celebration of this all-American fruit will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday during the farm’s first-ever “An Apple Afternoon.” Visitors are welcome to stroll through the farm’s extensive orchard, help out with harvesting, stir up some applesauce and just revel in the bounty and beauty of a typical fall day down on the farm.

“We want to give visitors an opportunity to explore the orchard in-depth in a way most people don’t always get a chance to,” said Laura Johns, manager of farm programs and interpretive services.

With dozens and dozens of trees bearing vintage varieties, such as Northern Spies and Golden Supremes, the farm’s orchard is a step back in time to when farm families grew multipurpose apples that were great for canning, pies, applesauce and apple butter. Visitors only need to follow their noses to the farm’s Summer Kitchen, where staff members will give cooking demonstrations on how farm families created the tasty dishes that provided them with fruit to last through the long winter season. Little ones can try

their hands at apple stamping, a fun craft project that teaches children about the apples growing in the farm’s orchard.

“We’ve designed the whole program to help families explore our orchard, understand how fruit trees grow, how they are maintained and what happens after the fruit was harvested at a historic farm,” Johns said.

The farm will go from harvest fun to Halloween mayhem as it keeps the holiday madness going with a Mini-Monster Mudder fun run Nov. 1. Trekking through nearly 2 miles of farm paths and trails is a great way to work off the sugar high from all that Halloween candy. Along the way, runners (or joggers or walkers) will encounter muddy patches, an obstacle course and a balance challenge – as well as a spooky element or two to keep in the spirit of the season.

Geared toward children ages 8 and older, the Mini-Monster Mudder can be as challenging or easy-going as a person wants. The course takes participants down gravel cattle lanes and into marshy areas most visitors don’t get to see.

“We want to have a little bit of post-Halloween fun,” Johns said. “It can be a great time for the whole family and is a great excuse to get outside, get a little dirty and just enjoy the outdoors before winter sets in.”

A POPULAR HAUNT The House at 316 a tradition in Maple Park neighborhood

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – When a sporting goods store was going out of business a few years ago in DeKalb, Hank Hockey saw an opportunity to pick up some deals on something he always wanted.

He wasn’t excited about picking up inexpensive sports team jerseys or athletic shoes. Instead, Hockey, a Maple Park resident, said he

figured he could buy some of the store’s mannequins for a good price.

He was able to do that, and after proper preparation, he was able to upgrade the annual Halloween display he puts together at The House at 316 – at his home at 316 W. DeKalb Drive in Maple Park.

The mannequins have been cut up and placed in

the front yard near the gravestones. Parts of them are painted red to suggest a bloody scene out of a scary movie.

On the porch, there are heads hanging and decorated as part of the scene.

The windows are boarded up. At night, Hockey said, visitors can expect strategic lighting and, on still nights, fog.

Hockey, 43, said he has put up Halloween decorations most years since he was in

his teens. He said when he skipped The House at 316 one year after undergoing surgery, friends and neighbors complained.

In some years, he has had themed displays. In recent years, he has gone with the graveyard theme. He said it

can take at least two full days to properly arrange all of the displays in his yard. When completed, the decorations will include some fencing in his yard, as well.

Those who visit for trickor-treating on Halloween should expect a live show of sorts.

Hockey said he typically will get dressed up and tries to scare the older kids. He said some will see him in his yard and taunt him from across the street.

“They’ll say, ‘I’m not scared.’ But it’s inevitable that I will get somebody to cry,” Hockey said. “I try not to.”

Hockey said he enjoys a good scare himself, although he said that can be difficult.

“I am so desensitized from doing this and making the bloody parts. … It’s very tough for me to get scared,” he said. “But I absolutely love it when I am.”

LOCAL BRIEFS AURORA – The Rosary High School cross-country team is hosting a one-mile fun run for all students in eighth grade and younger Tuesday at Rosary High School, 901 N. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora.

Registration begins at 3:45 p.m., with a course tour at 4:15 p.m.

The first race starts at 4:30 p.m., with the youngest division.

Separate one-mile races will follow every 15 minutes, and awards will be presented after each race.

Trophies will be awarded to first-place finishers and place ribbons for second through fifth place in each division.

All finishers will receive a ribbon.

Parents or coaches must accompany runners. Teams are welcome.

DRYING EFFECTS Tears not only lubricate the eyes and keep them comfortable, but they also deliver oxygen to the cornea, contain anti-bacterial agents, maintain vision clarity, and promote healing. For all these reasons, the experience of chronic “dry eye” can be a potentially serious problem. Contrary to what many might think, dry eye syndrome can cause intermittent tearing and watering of the eyes due to microscopic corneal scratches produced by dryness. Without treatment, corneal scarring and possible permanent vision problems may result.

The KYB Dressage Horsey Halloween Party will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Grand Prix Equestrian, 45W015 Welter Road, Maple Park.

The event will include several live theater acts on horseback, a rescue horse demonstration, a paint-ahorse project, hayrides, a costume contest, Halloween party and more.

Geneva Art Guild hosts annual show at city’s public works building

This is a new group, so the main emphasis is getting acquainted.

Founded in 2012 as a subcommittee of the city of Geneva’s Cultural Arts Commission, the Greater

Geneva Art Guild promotes fine arts in the community and fosters fellowship among local artists. Bouvat said the guild has its monthly meetings at the city’s public works building and decided to have its annual art show in the same building.

The guild has been challenged to have a place to show art and realized where the members meet would be a perfect venue, she said.

“This place is huge, and it could accommodate lots and lots of people with their

art,” Bouvat said. “We can decorate it any way we want, and we want to make it as welcoming and fun and original as we can. … We are going to light this place up.”

Those who come to the Art Works event will see original art on display and for sale, meet artists and see them at work, have refreshments and hear live music.

On Oct. 17, coffee and snacks will be offered, as well as comfortable seating.

AURORA – Rosary High School is hosting an open house at noon Oct. 25 for parents and their daughters in grades five through eight. DeKALB – Two men are accused of first-degree murder after an attempt to rob a drug dealer ended with a fatal shooting, DeKalb police said.

Police were called to 817 Pleasant St. around 10 p.m.

Tuesday. They arrived to find a resident of the house, Mathew Clark, 23, shot in the chest. Clark, who lived in DeKalb but was originally from Trevor D. Bloomingdale, Motsinger was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 11:35 p.m.

Police arrested Trevor D. Motsinger, 25, of the 100 block of Home Drive in DeKalb, who they say arranged the drug deal knowing the plan was to rob Clark.

The alleged trigger man, Christopher J. Gerken, 25, of the 200 block of North Hickory Street, in Cortland, was arrested Wednesday morning after leading police on a chase from DeKalb all the way to routes 38 and 47 in Elburn, according to a police news release.

Both Gerken and Motsinger are charged with first-degree murder. Motsinger also is charged with obstruction of justice and unlawful pos-

session of controlled substances, according to court records.

Police aren’t yet sure what drugs Clark was supposed to be selling Gerken, but they did find narcotics in the house, DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” he said, “but what we suspect is cocaine.”

Police said Gerken was upset with Clark because of a previous drug Christopher sale and came to their meetJ. Gerken ing Tuesday armed with a handgun. He confronted Clark, a struggle ensued, and then he fatally shot Clark in the chest, police said.

There are no other suspects in Clark’s killing, Petragallo said.

“The two that are in custody are the only two involved with the homicide that we know of right now,” Petragallo said. “A separate investigation is ongoing regarding the drugs.”

Gerken was arrested Wednesday morning after a police chase that went through multiple jurisdictions. A DeKalb police officer spotted Gerken driving north on Peace Road from Interstate 88 about 6:50 a.m. and tried to stop him.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Charles Police Department and the Elburn Police Department assisted capturing Gerken.

Motsinger and Gerken both had previous records involving drugs, documents show.

In 2013, Motsinger was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia – a Raiders helmet smoking pipe. In 2012, he was charged with possession of marijuana and knowingly causing damage to property.

In 2014, Gerken was charged with possession of marijuana between 0.5 and 10 grams. In 2012, he was charged with production of marijuana.

Residents in the neighborhood were startled by the latenight disturbance and ensuing police presence.

Neighbor Connie Appledorn said she was inside her

house cooking Tuesday night when she heard a gunshot.

“I thought my cat had knocked something over in the house,” she said. “but then I saw all the (police) lights and was like, ‘What the heck?’ ” Appledorn said she was watching her daughter and some neighborhood kids at the time of the shooting, and tried to keep them away from the windows so they couldn’t see what was happening.

Appledorn has lived in the neighborhood for more than 10 years and said she never had experienced anything like this before.

“It was pretty scary,” she said.

Mayor John Rey said that isolated incidents should not make people think DeKalb is unsafe.

“We are making headway on major crime incidents like these,” he said. “Obviously, I am not sure eliminating it totally is a reasonable expectation, but I am pleased that we are making headway in reducing incidents of this type of crime.”

One hectic journey It all started as a normal Friday night; I swear. All we wanted was dessert.

The evening began at California Pizza Kitchen, where my two friends and I split a plate of dumplings as an appetizer, and afterward, a pizza with peanuts on it (that was a first that I’d totally order again). Our original intent was to order dessert there, too; however, after looking at the menu, nothing struck our fancy. So, we decided to skip the dessert. We left, and walked around Geneva Commons, looking at every store imaginable.

After jumping into random shops for a good two hours, we decided it was best to get our much-needed dessert. There was only one dilemma. My friends and I were undecided about what type of dessert we wanted. We knew we didn’t want ice cream; my one friend voted against chocolate cake; and we didn’t want anything too generic, like a brownie.

After much discussion, for whatever reason, my friend (who drove us) decided it was best to just drive down the road in one direction until we came across a restaurant that we all wanted to go in.

So, while she drove, my other friend and I searched for restaurants with good desserts. We ultimately failed at locating any sort of decent place, however. The next thing I knew, we were parked in an empty Charlestowne Mall parking lot.

Luckily, that was when it hit me: pie. Pie was the answer, and what was the best place to get pie at 10 at night?

Wal-Mart? Jewel? No. Bakers Square in Naperville was the correct answer, never mind the nearly 40-minute drive in the opposite direction.

Although we got lost about three times trying to find the place, and therefore, had to pull into a few parking lots to

I loved the feeling of just driving along with my friends, laughing about nothing, singing about everything and cranking up the radio to full blast and having dance parties while waiting at stoplights. Something about it was just so simple and amusing.

It took us a few wrong turns to get to Bakers Square, but we finally reached our destination and got the pie that we all craved. Looking back on it now, we probably would have made it there easier if we would have put in the correct restaurant name in our GPS before we began driving. Well, I suppose we’ll remember that for next time.

Driving back home, we got lost again after realizing we had driven in the wrong direction. We finally headed the right way down the road, only to somehow end up on the tollway. My friend is completely capable of driving on the tollway, but her 19-yearold car would disagree.

Generally, I think we can all agree that – sometimes – life does not go as we imagine it. But, if you ask me, the nights that are usually a bit crazy and hilariously entertaining are always the ones that do not end up as originally planned.

Preventing friendly fire from the sky in Afghanistan BLOOMBERG VIEW As the Pentagon investigates the airstrike that killed 22 civilians at an Afghan hospital last weekend, it’s crucial authorities be as transparent as possible – not only about what the pilots and spotters on the ground did, but also about the rules they’re required to follow.

The aerial attack on the Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz came from an AC-130 gunship.

The AC-130, a transport plane outfitted with fearsome cannons on its wings, has traditionally not been subject to the strict “collateral damage estimation” procedure that air controllers use to determine whether fighter jets and drones get the green light to attack. The reason for the exemption, at least accord-

ing to a copy of the collateral-damage guidelines obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union in 2009, is that the gunship has highly accurate “direct fire” weapons with projectiles under 105 millimeters.

With its 25- and 40-millimeter cannons and low, slow flight pattern – and the fact that it works in conjunction with spotters on the ground – the AC-130 is considered far less likely to cause civilian deaths than a high-speed jet dropping bombs. The fallacy of this belief is all too evident in the wreckage at Kunduz.

Were the pilots and ground troops in Kunduz operating under these looser rules of engagement? More broadly, are there good arguments for allowing the AC-130 and other direct-fire craft more freedom to en-

gage? The answers to both of these questions will be hard to get – because the military keeps its rules of engagement classified.

This in turn raises the question of why collateral-damage methods are classified to begin with. It would be tough to make a persuasive case that releasing them would reveal vital information to the enemy. A public explanation of what happened in Kunduz will be a challenge for the Pentagon, but it’s the minimum requirement after a mistake of this magnitude. Even more important, in terms of future prevention, is an assessment of the military’s rules for protecting civilians. And for that debate, people outside of the Pentagon need to know exactly what those rules are and how they can be improved.

DANCIN’ IT UP All welcome to attend Fermilab’s folk and barn dance groups

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermilab is known for many things, particularly science, but one rarity that not too many people seem to know about – but has gone on there for quite some time – is folk dancing.

There are four main dance groups that meet two to three times a week, depending on the group. The four groups are barn dancing, international folk dancing, Scottish country dancing and English country dancing.

The groups meet at the Fermilab Village Barn near Wilson Street and Kirk Road in Batavia. There is no cost, and the dance opportunities are open to the general public.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey was able to catch up with one of the dance callers at Fermilab, Mady Newfield, who specializes in international folk dancing. She runs those sessions and talked about her love of dancing and how she encourages anyone with any interest in dance to come and enjoy the experience.

Chris Casey: Reading through information of each dance, some of the dancing seems like it may be complicated. Is anyone welcome to come to these? And do you need background in dancing prior to coming?

Mady Newfield: Oh, absolutely everyone is welcome. There are some hard dances that you

may not able to do the very first time out, but – as with anything else – it gets easier the more you do it. There are people that have been dancing for many years and then people who have only been dancing for a few weeks. This goes for all of the dancing here. We have ages ranging from 5 years old all the way to 70 years old, so we really cover everyone in that aspect. North rolls to regional repeat

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A neither funny nor fuzzy thing happened on the way to Kate Lillie’s medalist round at Wednesday’s Class AA Burlington Central girls golf regional.

Steering St. Charles North to a team title with a 1-overpar 71 necessitated navigating the same Sycamore Golf Club course at which North won a regional 364 days ago. The junior hardly tsk-tsked at the task, but she did have an opinion about it.

“I find it kind of boring, really, just because having so many par 4s in a row, you start to kind of lose your focus, and you have to be able to keep your focus,” Lillie said.

“It’s how you’re able to play through those holes, though.”

With a team score of 303 – 35 strokes better than this time last fall – the North Stars excelled in that regard and many more. Ostensibly, their only rough patch came during the awards ceremony, when junior Gianna Furrie and freshman Emma Hayes tied for the fourth-best individual score with a 79.

Only four individual medals were on hand in the clubhouse. Lillie and freshman teammate Megan Furtney, who shot an individual runner-up 74, claimed two others.

“It’s awesome. I couldn’t ask for a better team, honestly,” Furtney said. “We all have each other’s backs, so if anybody ever goes down, we’re always there to pick them up. So, it’s great.”

“Last year, I was a little nervous about everything, and this year I’m a lot more comfortable,” said McCoy, a sophomore who rolled behind booming drives. “Last year was pretty much getting ready for this year.”

Doesn’t Geneva know? In 2014, the Vikings saw four individuals move on to sectionals after finishing fourth as a team by one stroke. That made this repeat trip west not boring, but another “b” word – blissful.

“It was just a big relief knowing that we didn’t want the same thing to happen, obviously,” Vikings coach Doug Roberts said.

“As the season’s been progressing, I think they knew

that they had some good scores from the group, and they just feed off of one another.”

Darby Lillibridge (82) and Reilly Krohe (88) paced the Vikings, while Gabby Devlin (91) and Kendal Fioresi (93) followed.

“We all kind of struggled on the front, but we all turned it around on the back, you know,” Bundy said. “The weather was good. I’ve been so lucky with conference and regionals. It’s been really nice.”

Early October sun and highs in the mid-70s only ameliorated the monotony, then, for anyone who found it. For the record, Bundy described the experience with “boring,” too.

Gaffney agreed. Partially.

“It’s pretty straightforward,” she said. “But you definitely have to play here once or twice so you get to know the feel.”

Lillie improved her 2014 regional score by five strokes.

She said last season’s 76 didn’t “look that bad on paper, but it didn’t really feel well.”

Lunching with teammates as Wednesday’s final scores came in, her temperament was a positive one. Sure, Lillie would like to see more than just two par 5s on a course, but with three birdies and an even keel in hand, her approach translated well.

“I just take what I have to do at hand and try to do the best I can,” Lillie said.

First-year Central coach Kyle Nelson marveled at North and the rest of the participants. BC finished seventh among eight teams.

“It was great to be in a field

like that. It’s an incredible field,” Nelson said. “Some of the numbers they put up, and to get two golfers out was awesome. Obviously, you want to get more, but I’m excited our two seniors get to go on and play.”

A former Hinsdale South golfer, Nelson has playing experience at Cog Hill No. 1.

A minority of Wednesday’s field could attest, and many of which who have toured the course did so during junior competitions growing up.

Much of the post-regional chatter swirled around scheduling practice rounds. Once scores and awards were finalized and announced, it was time to bid adieu to Sycamore for the moment.

Surely, there won’t be a regional site three-peat, right?

“I kind of hope it’s not here again,” Bundy grinned. “I’m not going to lie.”

Randall’s support from program, love of game help him overcome Type-1 Diabetes

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For Jacob Randall, football is so much more than just a game. It’s an outlet. The Batavia freshman has faced many obstacles in his life, which included a move to India at a young age for his father’s job, but nothing was more challenging than the news he received when he was seven years old.

Jacob was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, the most dangerous type of diabetes with no known cure. His mother, Michele, and father, John, have seen many highs and lows, but nothing has stopped Jacob from fighting through any adversity in his life.

When Michele heard that Jacob wanted to play football four years ago, there was no question there were worries and health concerns, but she knew her son’s love for football meant so much more.

“It’s still scary, but it has gotten better over time,” Michele said. “We’ve been able to talk with coaches and, now in high school, a trainer, and

It’s still scary because a lot of things can happen, but it’s more about going to the games and cheering him on now, rather than worrying as much.”

If anyone thought for one second that his diagnosis

would make Jacob abandon his love for football, it couldn’t have been further from the truth.

“I don’t want to give it up because it’s my favorite thing to do,” Jacob said. “I want to take control of the diabetes because diabetes doesn’t de-

fine me. It shows I’m going to take control of it and change it for the better. I love the sport, I like to play and I like to hit people.”

There have been many sleepless nights, many scares, but one thing the entire Randall family now knows, espe-

cially after this past Sunday, was that the support from both the Batavia football program and Batavia community is overwhelming.

More than 80 members combined to form a sea of red to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Team Randall at St. James Farm Forest Preserve in Warrenville.

Batavia freshman football coach Mike Theriault met the Randalls during eighth-grade workouts over the summer, and was informed of his condition. Fast forward to this season, when the freshman team was in the weight room for workouts and Theriault saw Jacob wearing an interesting shirt, which sparked him to inquire.

On the back of the red T-shirt read: “TEAM RANDALL” with the No. 1 underneath and three words to the right of the number reading: “WALK. CURE. DREAM.” When Theriault asked, Jacob, a center on the freshman football team, explained that

his family has been involved in supporting JDRF for several years. Their annual walk to raise awareness was just around the corner. His family had formed Team Randall and participated in the event in past years.

Theriault said something clicked and thought it would be a great opportunity to support the Randalls.

“We’re always looking to do things in the community, outside of football,” Theriault said. “When I saw the shirt and Jacob told me about it, I thought it would be a great thing to do. I think you could tell it meant a lot to him, especially with the team and his friends there. It was a big deal to him. We had a great time and it was a great event.”

Team Randall more than doubled its goal of $1,500 raised.

Michele knew there was support from coaches, with their complete understanding of Jacob’s condition, but Sunday brought things to a whole other level.

“We’ve always been able to talk to them and be on the same page with things,” she said. “But for them to do this and go this extra step, it was very touching, inspiring and makes us very proud to be Bulldogs and part of the Batavia community.”

If you think it meant something to Michele to have the support they received, imagine what was going on in Jacob’s mind.

“It was really great to have everyone here,” Jacob said. “It’s the first year that all of the football players got involved, and to do the walk with all of them, I loved it. It was more than just the football team, too, which was great.”

While hundreds of thousands of people deal with different types of diabetes, for Jacob to play football with Type 1, is a rarity in itself.

Those with Type 1 Diabetes have a pancreas that does not produce any insulin at all.

Any exercise lowers blood sugar in the human body, but with the wireless insu-

For those who do not have diabetes, the pancreas is regulated and stops producing insulin during times of stress or exercise.

“Lows are a lot more frequent than highs during football, for sure,” Michele said. “He had an incident at a camping trip this past summer, where some of his teammates were present. I don’t want to say it was a wake-up call, but they all got to see

how real this is and what it can actually do to him.”

Jacob also wears a Continuous Glucose Monitor, or CGM. The device allows Jacob and his mother to get read outs of his blood sugar levels every five minutes or so instead of Jacob having to prick his finger multiple times a day. Instead, the CGM allows Jacob to calibrate his levels just twice a day.

The devices are worn under his pads during football, and aside from taking a few plays off from practices or games when needed, Theriault said you couldn’t even tell watching him play. Ja-

cob also brings a shot kit to practice and games, in case of emergency.

His mother joked that getting the readouts has allowed her to become a “smother mother” to make sure everything remains how it should.

Michele has had a lot to worry about, and as a mother, still does on a daily basis.

But with doctor’s visits every three months, and the dayby-day uncertainty, she has seen her son battle through everything, and not give up, continuing to play the sport he loves. It has been quite the eye-opening journey.

“We’ve always talked

about how strong Jacob is, and the fact that he’s not ashamed of diabetes by any means, it’s a part of him,” Michele said. “But he doesn’t want it to define him. So when he’s involved in a sport like this and everyone sees him have to go to the sidelines, while it may be everyone is running, he doesn’t want anyone to think it’s because he’s not trying hard or giving it his all.”

From day one of his diagnosis, Jacob has been the definition of giving it his all.

He’s given football his all, but more importantly, he’s given life his all.

Former Bulldog Stolfa happy to help EIU ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber The transition to life as a college student and college athlete has been a good one for Kayla Stolfa. But it hasn’t come without work.

Stolfa is a freshman women’s soccer player at Eastern Illinois and a former Batavia athlete. She’s had the fortune of being able to spend a lot of time on the field in her first season, appearing in 11 of the team’s 13 games. Playing defense, she hasn’t racked up a lot of scoring stats, but the valuable experience right off the bat has her feeling good about how things are going on the field.

“It’s been going pretty well. I’ve been getting a decent amount of time,” Stolfa said. “As a whole, as a team, it’s kind of been a regrouping year because there’s 11 freshmen in our class. So it’s been a learning year for us. Our record doesn’t show that we’ve been doing very well, but we’ve been putting up a fight with every team that we come across.”

It is a big freshman class, one that makes up more than one third of the Panthers’ roster. And because of that, there’s plenty to work on. The team has a 2-9-2 record.

Moving forward, Stolfa said she and her team need to improve communication.

With a big group of first-year players trying to mesh with a big group of more experienced players, there have been moments where on-field communication hasn’t been at ideal levels.

“Communication is probably the biggest thing because being able to communicate with the rest of your team is a huge part of soccer,” Stolfa said. “If you’re not on the same page as your teammates, it’s all going to go wrong. That’s what I need to work on.

Eastern Illinois women’s soccer defender Kayla Stolfa, a freshman from Batavia, has played in 11 of the Panthers’ first 13 games, contributing one assist. the field, too. Stolfa said the academic transition has been as good as the athletic one, perhaps most importantly because of what athletics provides.

“The soccer team, we have to have a certain amount of study hours at our academic place with all the athletics academic advising,” she said.

“Having those study hours, it forces you to sit down and study for awhile. It makes it a lot easier to get it done.”

Stolfa is a biology major hoping to get into physical

therapy. It’s a course that makes sense for an athlete, and she said it was her own experience having to go through physical therapy after an injury in high school that sparked her interest.

“My freshman year of high school, I fractured my back.

And I had to go to physical therapy for that, and when I was there, I learned a lot from people,” she said. “I just want to help people get back to normal life. It’s hard being injured or having struggles in your daily life. I just want to

help people.”

Helping is a common theme for Stolfa whether she’s on the field or off it. In addition to that career path, she used the word when talking about her position on the field.

Though her coach said he might use her at forward at times – she’s fast, or so people tell her – she’s fine playing defense.

Whatever helps.

“I like where I’m at right now. As long as I’m helping the team out, that’s all I really

care about,” Stolfa said. “He said that he might put me at forward sometimes, like if we need speed up top. I guess I’m pretty fast, I don’t know.

That’s what everyone tells me.

“As long as I’m helping people out, then I’m good with what I’m doing.”

OAK LAWN – The St. Francis girls golf team narrowly missed qualifying for sectionals as a team, finishing in fourth place at Wednesday’s Class A Burbank Queen of Peace Regional by six strokes.

Still, a trio of Spartans performed well enough at Stoney Creek Golf Course to advance as individuals to Monday’s Nazareth Academy Sectional at Village Greens of Woodridge.

Senior Meg Bormann led the way with a 90, while sophomore Hailey Strickland (98) and senior Kelly Joniak (100) were next.

St. Francis shot 391 as a team, just off the pace of third-place Nazareth Academy (385).

34 Fluoride is a powerful ally in fight against tooth decay Dear Dr. K: I’ve read we need fluoride for healthy teeth. But I’ve also heard fluoride can be dangerous.

Can you help me sort this out?

Dear Reader: There is no treatment that doesn’t carry some risk along with the benefit. The question always is how the benefit compares to the risk.

What’s the risk with fluoride? Curious young children can overdose on fluoride if they get their hands on it. They might consume improperly stored fluoride tablets.

Or they might eat a large amount of a fluoridated toothpaste or drink a large amount of fluoridated mouth rinse.

On the other hand, for most children and adults, fluoride – in appropriate amounts – is a powerful ally in the fight against tooth decay. Its benefits far exceed the risks. And the risks are nil if you are careful about keeping fluoride out of the reach of young children.

Fluoride is a common mineral found in soil, all of the Earth’s water sources and a variety of foods, from black tea to fruit juice to canned crab.

Fluoride helps teeth resist being broken down by acid from plaque bacteria. (Plaque is the sticky film that coats our teeth between brushings.)

Fluoride also boosts the body’s ability to rebuild tooth enamel when acid-producing bacteria dissolve it. This new enamel is actually harder and more decay-resistant than the enamel on the original surface of the tooth. In addition, fluoride seems to limit the ability of plaque to stick to the tooth surface.

Children and adults can help prevent tooth decay by getting some fluoride every day. One of the simplest ways to get fluoride is by drinking water that contains it, either naturally or because fluoride has been added to it.

Another way is by using

If you drink mostly bottled water, check to see if it contains fluoride.

Most brands don’t contain enough, and some don’t contain any at all. Some home water treatment systems filter out fluoride.

Most communities in the United States add fluoride to their drinking water. If your community doesn’t or if you prefer to drink bottled water or if your filter removes fluoride, you may need to get fluoride from other sources.

As I mentioned, getting a lot of fluoride can be deadly. But an adult would need to drink 5,000 to 10,000 glasses of fluoridated water in one sitting to take in enough fluoride to be at risk.

Anyone trying to drink that much water would get sick well before they got close to drinking that amount. (Yes, you can make yourself very sick by drinking huge amounts of pure water, just from the water.)

A minor drawback to using fluoride is it can discolor tooth enamel.

Usually, the discoloration is nearly unnoticeable.

Sometimes, heavier mottling and brown blemishes occur if parents use too much fluoride while a young child’s permanent teeth still are forming in the gum. This unusual situation occurs typically in small towns that naturally have more than one-part-per-million concentration of fluoride in their drinking water.

But staining doesn’t affect how the teeth function or their long-term health.

Marijuana will not cause fatal overdose Dr. Wallace: Can a person who uses marijuana on a regular basis actually die from an overdose of pot? Which is more dangerous for a person’s health: being addicted to tobacco products or smoking a couple of joints every day? – Nameless, Lima, Ohio.

agree that marijuana will not cause a fatal overdose. But regular marijuana smoking can cause physical ailments that can lead to premature death. Research has shown that one marijuana cigarette can cause as much lung inflammation as seven to 20 tobacco cigarettes.

Pot smokers generally consume less than tobacco smokers do, but they hold the smoke longer in their lungs.

Because marijuana smoke has more cancer-causing chemicals than tobacco smoke, those who smoked 10 marijuana cigarettes a week for five years were found to have similar swelling, redness and changes in lung cells as cigarette smokers who had consumed two packs a day for 20 years, according to the publication “Marijuana and Health,” printed by Life Skills Education in Weymouth, Mass.

The wise teen who strives to have a healthy body avoids both tobacco products and marijuana.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and very

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace slender. I usually eat healthy food, but I’m not what you’d call a “health nut.” I try not to eat too many junk foods, and I’m on our cross-country team in our high school.

My problem is that I have a grandmother who lives with us from Poland, and she doesn’t speak very much English yet, but she is a really nice person. She speaks in Polish to my mom (who also speaks Polish), and she is trying to convince my mom that I’m too thin and if I don’t start eating more I’ll get really sick. I know this isn’t true, because I’m physically fit and healthy, and I haven’t missed a day of school in five years. However, my mom is starting to wonder if I could be anorexic.

Trust me when I tell you that I am not anorexic. I enjoy three meals a day and I eat snacks like raw vegetables and fruits.

My grandmother makes a lot of Polish recipes and they look delicious but I try to avoid most of what she makes because her cooking is loaded with calories. My grandmother thinks I don’t eat enough, but she is quite plump, and it is partly be-

cause of her diet.

How can I convince my mom and grandmother that I’m not undernourished and that I’m physically fit and don’t need the extra calories?

I don’t want them to keep worrying about my health. Help!

three different body types: slim, medium and bulky. You are simply in the slim category. This means that it’s more difficult for you to add 10 pounds than it is for someone with a bulky build.

By eating a proper diet and exercising regularly, people of any body type can enjoy excellent health. The fact that you are eating three meals daily and snack on raw veggies and fruits is evidence that you are not anorexic.

Health experts agree that if a person is eating properly, it is almost impossible to be too thin. Make sure your mom reads my answer and shares it with Grandmother.

As a teenager, I grew up in your area with many Polish-American families in Northwest Indiana. I can vouch for Polish cooking and baking. It doesn’t just look delicious – it is delicious! It takes extreme self-discipline not to overeat that wonderful food.

Dear Abby: I am a widow in my early 50s. While I was dating a prominent OB-GYN, I found out he’s involved in criminal activity – operating a so-called “pill mill.” On our last date, he asked me to join an escort service he was starting.

I notified the medical board of the state he’s practicing in and various government agencies. It amazes me he is still practicing. He’s doing abortions, which means he has access to vulnerable young women. Knowing this, I have lost trust in our medical establishment. Nothing seems to affect this man’s success and practice.

I have given up and am moving far away. What should I do? Have I done everything possible? This is obviously a very difficult situation for me. I am deeply concerned about his patients.
