Club members Oct. 17 and 18 will host a book drive in the south garage of Lions Park in support of a reading action campaign to combat illiteracy in the community, according to a news release.

New and gently used books can be dropped off from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 17 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at the garage, located on Stetzer Avenue west of Filmore Street in Elburn.

The club asks that the books be appropriate for 1through 18-year-olds.

Grant said that doesn’t diminish enthusiasm about homecoming festivities at Kaneland. In addition to the powder puff game, there is a spirit day, including an assembly Friday, as well as the school’s football game Friday night and the homecoming dance Saturday.

“We have nine communities that feed into this,” Grant said of Kaneland. “Our school is our community. It’s the place where the communities come together. … Homecoming at Kaneland has even more meaning. There’s not a parade, but that’s really the only thing that’s different.

The spirit here right now is palpable.”

“We’re growing – it’s going to take a while,” said Joe Kryszak, the program’s chair.

The club in 2012 bought 155 books for Kaneland children, and then held a drive in 2013, Kryszak said. That year, the club gave out 181 books as gifts, and donated about 700 books from the drive to area libraries for their used book sales. As of Tuesday, the club has given out 124 books, not including about 2,000 bilingual books discovered the previous winter by a Lions Club member and her family.

After this year’s drive, Lions Club volunteers will do an initial sort between the new and gently used books and the worn books. Then libraries will come in and categorize them by age and gender, Kryszak said.

Worn books from the drive still will find a home at mini and mobile library programs in the area. The Between Friends Food Pantry in Sugar Grove has a library bank where children read books and then initial and date them on the inside cover when they return them, Kryszak said.

County school leaders, legislators slam SB16 at forum

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Senate bill that proposes changes in the way local school districts are funded did not get any support Tuesday at a forum at St. Charles North High School.

More than 300 people gathered in the high school’s auditorium to hear about Senate Bill 16. The bill would not increase the current level of state aid to schools, but it would change the way funding is apportioned to Illinois

school districts.

The bill as written would reduce school funding for many suburban school districts, said State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles. Karen M c C o n - McConnaughay n a u g h a y moderated the forum and its panel, which included superintendents from many Kane County School districts and a

few legislators.

“This proposal is about taking the easy way out – taking funding from the suburbs and shifting it elsewhere,” McConnaughay said during the forum.

A reduction in state aid will make already-difficult funding situations worse in school districts – property taxes are already high and passing referendums will be impossible, said Rep. Mike Tryon, R-Crystal Lake.

Tryon urged residents to contact their representatives

and also sign a petition at his website, miketryon.org, to make their voice heard on the bill. The bill passed the Senate in May and could begin moving through the House after the November election, Tryon said.

Geneva Superintendent Kent Mutchler said he wondered if the state should even have any control over school districts if state aid continues to decline, and the audience responded with a round of applause.

GENEVA – The Geneva Park District Board and staff recognized Superintendent of Parks and Properties Larry Gabriel at a recent meeting for his 35 years of service working for the district. Gabriel started as a laborer in the parks department when he was 22 and

was instrumental in the park district’s success, Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte said. “Larry’s loyalty, reliability and excitement for his position are demonstrated in his superior work ethic that filters down through the entire district,” Lambillotte said, according to a news release.

ST. CHARLES – Alternate routes of travel around downtown St. Charles are encouraged this weekend because of the annual St. Charles Scarecrow Fest, St. Charles police announced in a news release.

There will be a significant increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic in and around the downtown area during the three-day festival, which will be Friday through Sunday in St. Charles. A few downtown streets west of the Fox River will be closed during the event.

North Third Street between Cedar and State streets will be closed from Thursday through Sunday, according to the release. Third Street between Main and Cedar streets will be closed Friday through Sunday.

North Fourth and Fifth streets between west Main and Cedar streets will be closed Friday through Sunday, according to the release.

Parking lot closures will go into effect a few days before the Scarecrow Fest. The River Plaza Parking Lot at North Second Street between Cedar and State streets will be closed from Wednesday through Sunday.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – When Luellen Seals found out she was pregnant again at age 40, she already was raising two young girls, a 3-month-old and a 3-year-old. But the Elburn resident accepted the bounty of having a fourth child, as she also has a 25-year-old son by a previous relationship.

“I thought I had the flu,” she said. “I was weak and tired and had headaches all the time. I went to the doc-

tor and said, ‘I just don’t feel good.’ I did not know I was pregnant. I had a toddler, a newborn, and now I was going to have another newborn on the way.”

Then, an ultrasound at 12 weeks revealed a trifecta of bad news: encephalocele, when a baby’s skull does not close completely and brain material protrudes; anencephaly, when the brain is completely or partially missing; and microcephaly, when an infant’s skull is abnormally small because of incomplete

brain development.

“The doctor recommended an abortion ... [because] there is a really good chance the baby would not survive the pregnancy,” she said. “He was telling me, ‘Why do want to do this to yourself?’ ” She was stunned, and she struggled to understand.

These birth defects occur in 1 in 10,000 births, and the babies are stillborn or die at birth or shortly after. She had another ultrasound at 14 weeks with a specialist, but the news still was bad.

Seals said Meagan’s birth defects are most likely the result of a deficiency in folic acid – an essential B-vitamin – not because she was malnourished, but because she got pregnant again so soon. She said her age possibly could have been a factor.

“I was in such shock,” Seals said. “Finding out I was pregnant right away was a shock, and then to turn around and find out I’m having a baby with these problems.”

She said she emailed everyone she knew and started asking for prayers and guidance.

She Googled the names of Meagan’s conditions and said she saw that there was no chance of life. Yet, an abortion was out of the question.

“There was no ‘decision,’ ” said her husband, Scott Seals.

“We were just going to move forward regardless of what we were being told by the doctors.

We are really strong in faith.”

His wife agreed.

“We knew right away we would not terminate,” Luellen Seals said. “We were putting faith first. Whatever the outcome was, we would make it through ... having that faith.”

••• Luellen and Scott Seals picked out an outfit their baby could be buried in. And they relied on their family, friends and church, Lord of Life Lutheran Church in La Fox, for support.

But when Meagan was born at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, she was crying and did not need assistance breathing. The next day, doctors did surgery to close the ping pong ball-sized opening in her head where part of her brain protruded, Seals said.

“They wanted me to let her pass that way and leave her organs,” Luellen Seals said.

“They wanted me to donate her organs.”

She and her husband declined and took their daughter home. Meagan, dubbed the “Miracle Baby” on her Facebook page, will be 5 on Nov. 10.

She cannot walk and will not grow beyond her current 20 pounds. She has a feeding tube.

But she can see and hear and has the mental capacity of a 3- to 4-month-old. Until some recent medical setbacks, she was able to drink out of a sippy cup, pick up dry cereal with her left hand and say “mama,” “hi” and “good girl.”

She is on a “boatload” of

medications, has suffered seizures – sometimes 100 in a 24-hour period – and requires 24/7 care, her mother said.

In July, Meagan spiked a fever from an E. coli infection in her brain, as well as a mass that had to be surgically removed, Luellen Seals said.

Two weeks later, she spiked another fever, and another scan showed the mass was growing again. During the second surgery, she developed a brain bleed and suffered a stroke that paralyzed her left side – her good side.

Meagan is now having physical and feeding therapy in the hope that she again will be able to pick up her sippy cup.

“The last thing she told me before she went to surgery was, ‘Big girl.’ I told her I loved her and gave her a kiss,” Luellen Seals said. “It gave me such hope. Here was my little girl, so brave, smiling and telling me, ‘Big girl.’ ” ••• Meagan is home again, and now the family is faced with a $40,000 cost for Meagan’s brain surgeries because they used a doctor who was not in their insurance network. A friend started a Go Fund Me page online to help the family. Luellen and Scott Seals say they do not regret having Meagan.

“She has brought us a lot of joy,” Luellen Seals said. “Her disability is a rare brain disorder. Any one of our kids could fall on the playground or fall riding a bike and have a brain injury. It’s the same thing. You are going to do what you have to do for your kids.”

They have reached out to other parents of children with similar conditions to Meagan’s. It’s a private Facebook page accessible through invitation because the parents share private information as they support each other, she said.

“She’s touched a lot of lives. ... We bless her everyday, and we are blessed to have her,” Scott Seals said.

Elburn board backs Elburn fire district in referendum

Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue officials upset over Elburn trustees’ resolution

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village Board members Monday night unanimously approved a resolution opposing the potential disconnection of some of the Elburn fire district’s territory.

Elburn trustees followed through with the resolution despite strong objections from three representatives of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, who spoke in the public comment portion of Monday’s Elburn Village Board meeting. Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said board members requested the resolution at a previous meeting, so he didn’t see an issue with the vote despite the absence of two board members – Ken Anderson and Ethan Hastert.

“This board, as a group of seven, unanimously asked for the resolution,” Dave Ander-

son said.

A referendum question on the Nov. 4 ballot asks some residents of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District whether they would approve the transfer to the Fox River district. On Monday night, Jim Gaffney, the Fox River and Countryside board president, was joined

by Fire Chief Greg Benson and attorney Ken Shepro at the Elburn meeting.

The referendum would affect a territory bound by LaFox Road to the east, Anderson Road to the west, Campton Hills Road to the south and Empire Road to the north.

None of that area currently is in Elburn’s village limits.

Before the vote, Shepro said a government body should not expend public resources to oppose such a question. He said the village would have used funds to put together the agenda packet and spent time to prepare the

resolution.

Gaffney said Elburn officials were overstepping their bounds. He said the Fox River district can deliver the same services for less money, and he said Elburn officials were telling people to spend more money than is necessary. He rejected the idea that the Elburn fire district could be in financial hardship because of the move, pointing to a new fire station the Elburn district is having built on Route 38.

“There is not any hardship being put on any resident because of the disconnection,” Gaffney said.

The Fox River officials also questioned Elburn’s interest in the referendum at all, since it doesn’t affect any area that currently is in Elburn’s village limits. Elburn officials said some of the land one day might be included in the village.

Bill Grabarek, an Elburn trustee, said the village was

concerned “beyond pure economics in this.” He said it’s possible that, if the Elburn fire district lost part of its territory, that it might affect the ability to maintain services at the highest level possible.

The resolution addresses the idea that the disconnection would result in a 21 percent reduction in the Elburn fire district’s equalized assessed valuation and tax revenues but would not result in a corresponding reduction of the district’s expenses.

Grabarek proposed adding language to the resolution that successful passage of the referendum might affect the health, safety and welfare of

the village’s residents. Other trustees agreed, and it was added to the resolution.

Reached on Tuesday, Shepro added that language does not change the opinion of those in the Fox River district. Shepro said he is considering filing a complaint with the state’s board of elections.

“I do feel strongly, personally, that it’s wrong for a public body to use its position to take a position for or against a referendum,” Shepro said, adding the Elburn fire district “obviously hopes people will read the resolution and arguably be persuaded by it, and that’s what the election code forbids.”

• A door to an unoccupied residence in the 200 block of Oak Drive, Elburn, was reported kicked in Monday, Sept. 22. No damage was reported inside the building.

• A Mercedes was reported burglarized Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the 1200 block of Wise Street, Elburn. A leather brief case, laptop, electronic signature pad, paperwork and I-Pass were reported missing.

• A resident of the 600 block of Banbury Avenue, Elburn, reported Friday, Sept. 19, that someone purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service called her and claimed she owed $15,000 in back taxes. When she asked to speak to the caller’s supervisor, the caller yelled and said she would be arrested if she didn’t pay. The resident then realized it was a scam and notified police.

Campton Township. The offender apparently broke in through a basement window and exited through a rear sliding glass door.

A 65-inch TV and jewelry were among the items reported stolen. The total loss and damage was estimated at $3,500.

• A backyard shed in the 5N900 block of Kings Wood Drive, Campton Township, was reported burglarized Tuesday, Sept. 30. A 1998 go-cart valued at $800 was reported stolen.

• A 2004 Chevrolet was reported vandalized Saturday, Oct. 4, in the 39W500 block of West Haladay Lane, Geneva.

Damage included scratches on the exterior and a cracked windshield. Two baseball gloves, two charging cords for cellphones and tablets and three pairs of sunglasses were reported stolen.

• Dennis Galloway, 40, of the 7900 block of South Paxton Street, Chicago, was charged Sunday, Oct. 5, with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use after a traffic stop on Williamsburg Avenue in Geneva.

• Eric M. Shodeen, 49, of the 900 block of Hawthorne Lane, Geneva, was charged Tuesday, Sept. 30, with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent, driving without lights when required and improper parking on the roadway.

They are just a few of the groups that will benefit from the 28th annual DuKane ABATE Toy and Food Run set for Sunday.

“That’s our focus, to be able to help the local charities,” Kaenel said. “If we can help them a little and sustain them, we’ve done our jobs.”

Carl Fischer chosen as new Batavia 1st Ward alderman Will fill vacancy on the Batavia City Council

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Carl Fischer was selected Tuesday as the new 1st Ward alderman on the Batavia City Council.

Fischer was one of three candidates that applied to fill a vacancy on the Batavia City Council after the recent resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks. Carl Dinwiddie and Dan Pepin were the other two candidates.

After aldermen interviewed the candidates at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, they went into a closed session, where they ranked the three candidates.

Fischer emerged as the winner, and will be sworn in at the Oct. 20 City Council meeting.

Fischer has lived in Batavia since 2004, where he has coached in the Batavia Youth Football League and been involved in other community activities, such as volunteering at the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

“I care about the community,” Fischer told aldermen.

Dinwiddie and Pepin were at the meeting, while Fischer answered questions via Skype.

He was on a business trip in Philadelphia.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he was extremely pleased with the high quality of the candidates.

Dinwiddie, a frequent critic of government overspending, has lived in the First Ward for 27 years. Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit asked him about his wife, Yvonne Dinwiddie, who also has been outspoken about various issues in the community.

“How does the community separate your household?”

Chanzit asked.

Carl Dinwiddie said they are not in agreement about all the issues.

“We do debate issues and we have different opinions,” he said.

Chanzit asked Pepin about the fact that he is a founding member of Keep Batavia Neighborhoods, which has voiced opposition to the proposed rezoning of land for an industrial park at Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass on the city’s east side. Chanzit asked him what his involvement with the group would be if he was appointed to the City Council.

“I would suspect I would have to step away,” Pepin said. “I wouldn’t want there to be a conflict of interest.”

In August, Sparks announced he was resigning from the City Council because he was moving to North Aurora. Sparks first was elected to the City Council in 2005.

Sparks’ term expires in April.

McMahon agreed. If convicted abusers only get jail time, he said, then the problem is just delayed. Changing behavior is the ultimate goal, he said.

The state’s attorney’s office offers a variety of deferred prosecution programs, including a program for domestic violence offenders.

Since it began in October 2010, 354 people have graduated from the program and 99 have been negatively terminated, resulting in a 78 percent success rate. Nearly 200 applications were rejected because they didn’t meet the program requirements.

Establishing such a program takes resources, faith and solid relationships with the stakeholders, McMahon said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The recent release of a video showing professional football player Ray Rice striking a woman, now his wife, in a casino elevator is similar to the acts of domestic violence Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said his office prosecutes.

His office sees domestic violence cases “far more frequently” than most people realize, he said. Unlike the Rice case, he said, those that happen here don’t involve high-profile individuals and don’t have videotaped evidence.

He stressed that Rice’s wife was not at fault.

“No one deserves to be punched ... let alone by somebody they love,” McMahon said Tuesday during his monthly meeting with reporters.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but Mutual Ground Executive Director Michelle Meyer said the conversation about domestic violence needs to happen outside of this month – and outside of the Rice situation.

“It’s not just an NFL problem,” she said. “It’s a problem everywhere.”

Maureen Manning-Rosenfeld of the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, said she is glad Rice was sent to counseling.

“We have to change those attitudes and behaviors,” she

Aldermen voted to approve a $30,000 contract with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP, an accounting and advisory firm, to conduct the rate study. The study will include a review of the city’s existing rate structure.

Batavia aldermen in March voted 11-3 to approve an electric rate hike to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues. The hike raises electric rates in 2014 and 2015 in combination with a halfcent increase to the city’s home-rule sales tax.

In addition, the option applies different percentage increases to energy and de-

mand for commercial and industrial customers. City staff had recommended the option.

At that time, Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen the option would provide sufficient revenues and maintain comparable electric rates with surrounding utilities.

Under the option, residents this year will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates, plus a $4-a-month increase to the customer charge. In 2015, residents also will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates.

Holm had said Batavia needed to increase electric rates for many reasons, including higher-than-anticipated construction costs related to the Prairie State project, the economic downturn and an associated unprecedented drop in the price of natural gas, to which wholesale electric prices closely follow.

But with problems anticipated regarding salt this upcoming winter, Director of Transportation Carl Schoedel said the county decided to order its supply now rather than wait for December.

It’s a way to “be ahead of the game,” he told the Executive Committee on Tuesday as members set the County Board agenda for next week.

According to agenda documents, the board is poised to approve a resolution authorizing the purchase of up to 13,764 tons of rock salt through the state of Illinois bulk rock salt contract from Cargill Incorporated Salt Division of North Olmsted, Ohio. The cost will be $53.88 a ton, or about 5 percent above last season’s price, documents show.

Noting that pricing is higher for some communities, Board Chairman Chris Lauzen commended KDOT for its work.

“That doesn’t happen by accident,” he said.

JP Morgan hack shows U.S. needs serious cyberwar plan BLOOMBERG NEWS Every day seems to bring a new story about a digital hack or intrusion – usually boring, only occasionally involving nudity. The recent incident at JPMorgan Chase and Co., however, is worth paying attention to.

The bank revealed last week that a data breach had affected the accounts of 76 million households and seven million small businesses.

Exactly who conducted the attack, and why, is murky.

But the perpetrators were sophisticated and ambitious, and investigators have pointed to Russia.

That makes some sense.

Russia is mad at the U.S. generally for imposing sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia is mad at JPMorgan specifically for facilitating those sanctions. And Russia happens to be home to legions of talented cybercriminals whom the government notoriously tolerates.

If the Russian government was responsible for this attack, or knew it was happening and didn’t stop it, that could constitute a pretty serious international incident.

The U.S. should be ready to respond – yet in cyberwar, as in chess, overreaction is a fool’s gambit.

That’s why it’s wise to let the Federal Bureau of Investigation continue its criminal inquiry, try to identify the specific hackers who were responsible, and begin the long and slow process of indicting them in a U.S. court. Being able to publicize unambiguous evidence of Russian involvement as part of a criminal trial is smart politics – just as when the U.S. recently indicted a squadron of Chinese hackers

in a Pennsylvania courtroom. Jail time in either case is unlikely, but the important points are made.

The government should also shed some more light on precisely what it’s prepared to do when its interests are clearly threatened in cyberspace. The White House and the Pentagon have maintained an impassioned vagueness on this issue. In a way, this is smart: Ambiguity is a valuable deterrent, and because the provenance of cyberattacks can be unclear, committing to a specific form of retaliation would be a bad idea. But allowing hackers to repeatedly harm U.S. businesses without consequences will only invite more attacks.

The U.S. should make clear that it has a lot of tools at its disposal – political, diplomatic, financial and technological – and that it’s prepared to use them to respond to intrusions into its digital networks by foreign governments.

Another response, which can’t be emphasized enough, is to keep improving defenses. The financial industry deserves credit for taking this threat seriously and spending money on prevention – JPMorgan plans to devote $250 million a year to security – but securing American cyberspace will require congressional action, including a law regulating information-sharing between intelligence agencies and the corporate world. A hot line between the U.S. and other major players in cyberspace, on the Cold War model, could also help de-escalate a crisis.

More attacks like the one that hit JPMorgan are surely on the way. Someday soon, they’re going to require a response.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR IT’S CALLED INVERSION To the Editor: When you’re filing your tax return or studying the withholding from your pay check, think about this – major U.S. corporations, including some of the largest companies in the country, are using tactics to avoid paying corporate income taxes in this country.

How can they do this legally you might ask? It’s called inversion, wherein a company incorporates abroad where taxes are less.

A recent study reported that 20 of the largest American companies reported effective tax rates of 0 percent or lower in the second quarter. Apple has reportedly had billions in Ireland, where taxes are much lower than here. For one whole year, General Electric reportedly paid no corporate income tax. AbbVie, recently spun off from Abbott, bought a smaller company abroad and through apparently legal machinations will avoid paying corporate income tax in this country.

Securities and Exchange filings indicate that Microsoft has $92.9 billion in earnings offshore, thus avoiding $29.6 billion in taxes.

The corporate share of federal tax income is steadily declining. This either increases the federal deficit or requires the public to pay more.

If this is legal, why is it so unfair? Federal and state income taxes pay for the military to protect the country, the police to curb and deal with crime, schools and universities to educate future employees, bridges and highways to transport products, and many other benefits too numerous to

mention. Why should corporations not pay their fair share?

It’s because of our convoluted tax code.

It is true that the maximum corporate tax rate is 35 per cent. It is too high, and it should be lowered, but only when these loopholes are eliminated.

There are powerful interests that lobby Congress and underwrite candidates that make it extremely difficult to achieve a fairer and equitable tax code.

Corporate officers responsible, have you no shame? We all benefit from living in this great country of ours, and everybody should pay our fair share, corporations included.

More importantly for the Bulldogs, their Upstate Eight Conference River title remained intact.

In its final UEC River contest of the season, Batavia finally met its match, but still celebrated a conference championship after Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with the host North Stars in the nightcap of the Tri-Cities Challenge doubleheader.

The Bulldogs (14-1-3, 6-01 UEC River) have grown accustomed to having their way, so ending with a draw somewhat tempered their reaction to the outright title, which was guaranteed when second-place St. Charles East tied Geneva earlier in the night.

“That’s what you had to tell the boys after, this was one of your goals,” Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “You may not have been happy with the tie, or satisfied, and I’m glad they’re not satisfied, but you won conference, we get to keep the fox [trophy for best record vs.

Tri-Cities teams]. So we did accomplish some things we set out to do at the beginning of the year, so we had to celebrate that.”

Only two weeks from regionals, North (8-5-4, 3-1-2 UEC River) liked the form it displayed in pushing the highly regarded Bulldogs for the whole match.

“We can feed off of that,” North Stars coach Eric Willson said. “That was 80 minutes of consistent energy from us. I think if we’re able to do that on a regular basis, I think we can play with anybody. We just have to be consistent and disciplined in what we do, and if we do that, I think we can cause some havoc on teams.”

“I know as time, time again, Watson causes havoc on the offensive end,” Graham said. “He went by [a defender] and drew the foul.”

Batavia standout Ian Larson responded 62 seconds later, curling a free kick beyond North’s five-man wall and past goalkeeper Zachary Norton to tie the score at 1.

Larson, in the midst of a sensational season, almost

put the Bulldogs up with 9:15 to play, hitting a post after craftily gaining separation from a pursuing defender.

“It’s incredible, incredible competition,” Graham said of facing Larson. “It’s almost impossible to stop without giving up some kind of foul.

It’s fun playing against guys like that.”

Willson has seen plenty of quality players this season and said Larson is “at another level.”

“The one major talking point at halftime was that we needed to stop committing fouls in front of our own box,” Willson said. “We couldn’t give Larson more free kick opportunities because if you do, he’ll burn you, and it worked out that once we got the lead, we committed another foul, and the fourth opportunity, tie ballgame.”

Gianfrancesco said a

challenging stretch of the schedule has been helpful as Batavia looks toward the postseason.

“That’s a great thing,” Gianfrancesco said. “Obviously we’ve had Wheaton Academy, we had Waubonsie (Valley) last night. You want to be tested. That was a good thing.

They were pretty physical for us. We definitely met it, but they were probably one of the more physical if not the most physical teams we’ve had all year, I think.”

The doubleheader night also was a fundraiser for the family of Harter Middle School eighth-grader Drew Hahn, who is the son of Geneva teacher and baseball coach Matt Hahn.

Drew Hahn, who was in attendance with his dad Tuesday, completed chemotherapy treatments in July as he battles non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“You come out of this with a draw and not losing, you’re going to take that as a positive, but realistically, with what we’ve got on the field, with the talent that we’ve got, we should be winning that game.”

Meanwhile, Waldoch said the Vikings should be heartened but not satisfied by earning the draw with East.

“We feel pretty good but we definitely know there’s a lot of room to improve,” Waldoch said. “We’ve been talking about having that marquee game and we know that game has yet to come.”

ST. CHARLES – The Geneva boys soccer team couldn’t close out St. Charles East on Tuesday night, but a draw with the powerhouse Saints still served as a late-season morale boost for the Vikings.

Geneva and East tied at 2 in the first game of the Tri-Cities Challenge doubleheader at St. Charles North as a late penalty kick by the Saints allowed East to ward off Geneva’s upset bid.

Still, Geneva (6-4-4, 2-3-2 UEC River) left energized by tying East (12-2-2, 4-1-1 UEC River).

“Obviously with our record compared to their record, we should feel good about a tie like that, and from that standpoint, yeah, I’m pleased,” Geneva coach Ryan Estabrook said.

“The bigger thing I’m pleased about is we came out here and really fought for 80 minutes.

We scored twice on a very good team. We had to defend a lot … but we held our line for a large portion of the game. [Goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull] played

Matt Waldoch opened the scoring with 30:39 to go in the first half, chipping one past East goalkeeper Steven Owens off Lagger’s assist.

“I knew coming into the game their outside backs liked to come up a lot, so we wanted to look for those through balls because of the gap between their center defender and outside back,” Waldoch said. “I knew if the ball was on Lagger’s left foot that it would cut in to me. I just called for it, and next thing I knew, I had a perfect ball played right in front of me.”

Manibog, returning after a two-match absence because of a hamstring injury, tied it with 3:03 left in the first half, dashing in to score on a set-up by Ortiz.

“It was a nice airborne ball, Taylor got under it, got a really nice flick on to me, and I just took care of the rest,” Manibog said. “I ran onto it, had a guy on my back, but I touched the ball in and we scored.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Yes, the Geneva boys golf team plays home matches at Mill Creek Golf Club, and yes, some Vikings even live on the course that hosted Tuesday’s Class 3A Geneva Regional.

But heed these words of caution from Vikings sophomore Andrew Abel.

Geneva sure did.

“It’s still a golf course,” Abel said. “I mean, we have to come out and play, you know.

Somebody else could shoot really good, too.”

With a team score of 307, Jacobs fit the bill and won the 10-team regional.

Runner-up Geneva (312) and Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival St. Charles East (315) was close behind and also advanced to Monday’s Lake Forest Sectional at Lake Bluff.

St. Charles North’s Jake Muehlschlegel and Michael Staszcuk qualified as individuals, with Staszcuk winning a playoff for the final spot after

carding an 84. North finished fifth in the team standings with a 336.

Medalist Spencer Monroe, a Geneva sophomore who personifies the “home course” label more than most, shot a 4-overRonnie Griggs par 74.

Geneva welcomed nine other schools to Mill Creek, including five from the UEC River and one from the Valley Division.

Spencer DundeeMonroe Crown, Huntley and Jacobs traveled nearly an hour south to compete, and undoubtedly envied Monroe’s commute. Monroe’s family lives in the Mill Creek subdivision, adjacent to the first hole. Although he might have enjoyed a little more sleep, Monroe opted to arrive about 90 minutes earlier than his 9:09 a.m. tee time, getting

a jump on a score that still fell two strokes shy of his Mill Creek best, established this summer.

“I came straight here from home and practiced a bit,” Monroe said. “Everything was working pretty well today. My putting was good, my driving was good, my irons were pretty good.”

The Vikings flipped the script on the Saints, who were 14 strokes better to win last week’s UEC River meet at St. Andrews in West Chicago.

In late August, East won the Geneva Invitational here on a scorecard tiebreaker, scoring a 291.

As players waited for the final scores to be reported and tallied Tuesday, Saints senior Ronnie Griggs, the team leader with a 77, sensed Geneva’s comfortable perch and congratulated the Vikings.

He offered an extra couple of words to Monroe, smiling, “Solid 74.”

Griggs hoped for more from his own round, yet still realizes he earned a clean slate next week.

“Kind of rough,” Griggs said, “but, I mean, I held it together.”

Teammate Colin Johnson channeled similar resolve after rough beginnings on a windy day. A birdie on the par-5 ninth hole helped him to a 42 on the front nine.

Another birdie on No. 10 sparked his 38 on the back nine, giving Johnson an 80.

“Just kind of calmed down and realized that I know the rest of my team would play well, and I just needed to hit the fairway, and it shouldn’t be that hard.”

Daniel Haugen (78) and Michael Bertke (80) were the Saints’ other scorers.

Matt Fisher and Spencer Sharpe rounded out Geneva’s scorers, following Abel’s 78 with separate 80s.

Vikings coach Eric Hatczel narrowly missed out on bragging rights over Jacobs counterpart Gary Conrad. Hatczel and Conrad, a St. Charles resident, worked together at Geneva’s Eagle Brook Country Club for almost a decade.

“We have fun little rival-

ries. We play golf together and stuff,” Hatczel said. “So he was just kind of kidding with me today that the 307 was Round 1, and we’ll see what Round 2 happens at the sectional.”

Lake Bluff is far less familiar to the field. Its location, about a 90-minute drive from the Tri-Cities, left coaches wondering whether to make an early wake-up call Monday or stay overnight after likely Sunday practice rounds.

“I tend to like new places, because it’s a new challenge, really,” Muehlschlegel said.

“New holes, new looks, things like that. So I always like new courses.”

Everything figures to stand out to players then, not just the subtle changes that greeted them at Mill Creek. Tuesday’s biggest difference: No. 17 played as a par-4 instead of a par-5 after the tee boxes were moved up.

Along with Muehlschlegel and Staszcuk, the Vikings and Saints handled it. There’s something to be said about feeling at home.

Batavia boys golf earns landmark regional title KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BRISTOL – After some frenzied researching on the part of its coach, former Bulldog Tim DeBruycker, the Batavia boys golf team was ready to party like it was 1982.

DeBruycker said he believed the Class 3A Oswego Regional title the team earned by edging Marmion, 330-331, at Blackberry Oaks was the program’s first in 32 years.

“Extremely proud of my kids,” DeBruycker said.

“They hung in there. I’m pretty shocked that 330 won a regional. But based on the scores I saw out there today, that worked on a tough day.”

Golfers navigated adverse conditions for much of the day.

Things didn’t get any easier after the first four holes, which

naturally went into the wind.

“The course was in really nice condition, the weather was just a little crazy,” Marmion coach Doug Roberts said.

“At times, it was cold and windy with a little bit of rain, and at times it was sunny with no wind. So they Tim just had to conDeBruycker tend with some different kinds of elements out there.”

Nick Robinson (79), Nick LaRocco (83), Josh Moore (84) and Andrew Nelson (84) scored for Batavia.

Luke Hoss paced Marmion with an 80, and was followed

by Nicholas Huggins (81), Jackson Clark (82) and Jimmy Morton (88).

Batavia and Marmion advanced to Monday’s Hinsdale Central Sectional at Bluff Golf Course in Lockport.

Third-place Metea Valley (335) topped Waubonsie Valley (339) for the third and final sectional qualifying spot.

“That’s the way golf is sometimes, and we just hung on, and that was awesome,” DeBruycker said.

Class 2A Mendota Regional: At Mendota Golf Club, medalist Grant Gosden (76) and Wheaton Academy scored a 333, winning the regional and advancing to Monday’s Grayslake Central Sectional at Stonewall Orchard.

Runner-up St. Francis (336) also advanced, with Luke Armbrust’s 81 leading the way. Aurora Central Catholic earned the third qualifying spot with a third-place 346.

Mac Cowen and Christian Latham paced ACC with separate 82s.

Kaneland finished one stroke behind ACC, but still qualified five of its six golfers as individuals.

Jake Hed (85), Jeremy Faletto (86), Brett Glennon (86), Jesse Denton (90) and Jeff VanGemert (91) moved on for the Knights, with VanGemert winning a playoff for the final spot.

“I think most of our players were disappointed in how they played, so it was a little bittersweet when they found out that five of them were getting through,” Kaneland coach Mark Meyer said.

On Saturday, Morling, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, broke her own pool record in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 57.54.

She also was part of a meetrecord time in the 200 medley relay (1:50.56). The following is an edited transcript of Morling’s conversation with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley: How mindful are you of record swims in the moments after they happen?

I wasn’t aware of the relay

until later, but the backstroke I knew because it was my time previously. I had a lot of my teammates saying, ‘Jordan are you going to beat your old record?’ They kind of encouraged me to to get that one, so I was aware of it.

What is it about you and that event and the Downers South pool?

That’s just my favorite event, especially in high school season.

Once you go, you don’t look back and just finish your race.

Which teammate might you lean on for help with a tough homework assignment?

It depends on the classes you’re taking. I’m in some classes with Izzie Herb ... so there’s sometimes some help there. … But everyone is always willing to help.

ADVICE Woman should resist accusations of abuse Dear Abby: When I was 10, I faked an injury so I could quit playing soccer. I couldn’t articulate why the coach, who was clean-cut, friendly and fair, made me uneasy. After he died a few years ago, it came out that he had molested dozens of girls.

Over the subsequent 20 years, those same instincts have screamed at me three more times – and twice I was proven correct.

The third man to set off this alarm is in my social circle. I feel like I’m in a terrible position. Should I say something and risk destroying an innocent man’s reputation or remain silent? Diet, lifestyle changes can ease discomfort of GERD Dear Doctor K: Can lifestyle changes help relieve my heartburn?

Dear Reader: Heartburn is an uncomfortable burning sensation that radiates up the middle of your chest. It results from a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or “reflux.” With GERD, stomach acid surges up into the esophagus, the “swallowing tube” that connects our mouth to our stomach.

Our stomachs make acid to help digest food. The lining of our stomach is built to resist injury from the acid. The lining of the esophagus, however, is easily injured by acid.

To protect the lining of the esophagus from acid, there is a circular ring of muscle where the esophagus joins the stomach.

It’s called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES. The ring opens to allow food we’ve swallowed into the stomach. Then it clamps down, preventing acid from reaching the esophagus.

In GERD, the LES doesn’t clamp down enough. As a result, stomach acid squirts up into the lower esophagus. This irritates the lining, causing the sensation of burning. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Fortunately, diet and lifestyle changes can help prevent reflux.

A stomach full from a big meal (and acid) is more likely to cause GERD. • Relax when you eat. Sit down and eat slowly. Stress increases stomach acid production.

• Remain upright after eating.

Try not to bend over or strain to lift heavy objects for at least three hours after eating. This raises pressure in your stomach, which causes stomach contents to reflux up into the esophagus.

• Avoid eating within three hours of going to bed. Do not eat bedtime snacks. Food (and acid) in the stomach refluxes more easily when you’re lying down.

• Lose weight. Excess pounds increase pressure on the stomach and can push acid into the esophagus.

• Loosen up. Avoid tight belts, waistbands and other clothing that puts pressure on your stomach.

• Avoid foods that can trigger reflux: high-fat foods, spicy dishes, tomatoes and tomato products, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, milk, carbonated drinks, coffee (includ-

ing decaf), tea, chocolate, mints and alcohol. They all relax the circular muscle and make reflux more likely.

• Stop smoking. Nicotine stimulates stomach acid production.

It also impairs the function of the muscle that keeps food and acidic juices in the stomach.

• Chew (sugarless) gum. It increases saliva production, soothing the esophagus and washing acid back down to the stomach.

• Discuss your medications with your doctor. Certain drugs, including aspirin and other NSAIDs, oral contraceptives, narcotics, certain antidepressants and some asthma medications can cause heartburn.

• Raise your bed’s head. Elevate the head of your bed by placing a wedge under your upper body.

Don’t elevate your head with extra pillows. That makes reflux worse by bending you at the waist.

• Exercise wisely. Wait at least two hours after a meal before exercising.

• Try herbal remedies. Certain herbs, including chamomile, ginger and licorice, may help relieve heartburn symptoms.

Telephone can be great help Dear Teens and Parents: Do you make the most of your home telephone or cellphone?

Don’t answer yes too quickly. The receiver may be glued to your ear all right, but the odds are you’re gossiping with friends or ordering pizzas. The telephone or cellphone may be a lot more useful than that.

When I asked a Bell System home consultant to share with us some of the many ways the telephone can be a great help she said she has given such tips to thousands of teenagers across the country.

The teens’ favorite tip was how the telephone could be used as a research tool to save time and energy.

Here are some of her suggestions: 1. Before going to the library for a particular book or periodical, call to see whether it is available. Some libraries are even staffed to give you information over the phone, so you may not have to make a trip at all.

2. There are many other sources of information available that are just a phone call away. For instance, government agencies and large corporations involved in your field of research can be a great help – and many of them can be called without costing you a dime because of the expanded use of 800 numbers. To find out if a source you’d like to contact has an 800 number, just dial 800555-1212.

When you contact such sources, ask for the office of public information or the consumer relations department. They’ll guide you to anyone else you

3. And for families without cellphones, the telephone is one of the most used tools in the house. Siblings often fight over it, their parents get upset because important callers can’t get through, and “the Great Phone War” begins.

How can you win it? Most important, remember basic courtesy and consideration.

Don’t be a phone hog.

Remember that other family members have as much right to the phone as you do. Limit the length of your conversations and, if you know you need to make a long call, ask around and see if anyone else needs the telephone or is expecting an important call of his or her own.

4. And, of course, don’t forget about the cellphone. Rates are lower than ever before.

Cellphones can be invaluable in emergencies and allow parents and teens to stay in touch in circumstances where communication used to be impossible, or tricky at the least.

(As in when you needed a ride home or were going to be late for dinner – and didn’t have change for the pay phone!)

When the opponents are in the bidding, they are giving you information about their hands.

You may shut your eyes, but do not close your ears. Listen closely and use that data to your benefit. Do not sit there with earmuffs on. (Even a pass may provide positive information, but that is much less common.)

In this deal, East had an interesting decision over two spades: double or three hearts?

Double would have kept all three suits in play, but would have almost certainly resulted in a 5-3 heart fit being missed.

Preferring to aim for the most likely game, East plunged in with three hearts. Then South understandably took a shot at four spades. West, less understandably, doubled for penalty, telling declarer that the spade break was very bad.

West led the heart 10. East won with his king and tried to cash the ace, but South ruffed.

There was a strong case for not touching trumps at all, but at the table declarer led his spade seven and went up with dummy’s ace! Now the contract had to fail.

South should have played the spade two from dummy. Then he cashes his diamond tricks and plays a club to dummy’s queen. Suppose East wins and leads another heart. Declarer must ruff with his jack. Assume West overruffs and returns a trump. South wins with dummy’s nine, plays a club to his 10, cashes the club ace, and crossruffs the last two tricks.
