Forest preserve facility plan back on Elburn’s radar Trustees more receptive, but one Kane County Board member says different location would be better fit ELBURN – Members of the Elburn Village Board took a fresh look Monday night at a plan by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County to buy property at 1001 S. Main St. in the village.

Elburn trustees denied such plans during the summer, but several trustees were more receptive Monday, now that the plan included a partner – Ralph Helm Inc. – that would plan to open a business that would sell lawn and gardening equipment on the southern portion of the property, which is the location of the former Patten rental facility. Helm has locations in Elgin and Crystal Lake.

The northern part of the 9.14-acre property sits within the village limits, just north of a sign on Route 47 that welcomes drivers to Elburn. The southern part is in unincorporated Kane County. Village permission is needed for the forest preserve district to buy the land in Elburn.

The forest preserve district aims to create a new home for the district’s Natural Resources Department. Several Kane County Board members, who also serve as forest preserve district commissioners, were at Monday’s meeting.

Mike Kenyon, a Kane County Board member and the president of the forest preserve district, said he was “in love” with the existing building at the Patten site. He said the district would employ about 14

“I think you will appreciate us as a good neighbor,” Kenyon said.

Another Kane County Board member, Drew Frasz, was in attendance Monday, but said he was not there to advocate for the plan. He said he was there to listen. In a phone interview Tuesday, Frasz pointed out Elburn trustees unanimously voted against the plan, and he said he then became an opponent to the Patten location. He instead would prefer a different location. He said he couldn’t say exactly where the location would be, but he said it is about 10 minutes south of the Patten facility.

“The other piece of property is not controversial,” Frasz said Tuesday, adding it would be on a rural highway and “we wouldn’t have all of these entanglements.” He said the other location would be “the ideal situation and a substantial savings.”

“In my opinion, that whole meeting had no authorization by the forest preserve,” Frasz said of Monday night’s discussion.

Previously, Elburn trustees said they opposed the proposal because they feared the village and others, including Kaneland School District 302, could

lose money because of the fact the forest preserve district would be exempt from paying taxes. Also, they said the land is better suited for commercial development.

On Monday, several Elburn trustees indicated they were pleased about Helm’s involvement. Ralph Helm was at the meeting, and he said the plan would be to see whether the district would allow use of the existing building until his company could build its own structure. Helm said his company has been seeking a location in Elburn for the past few months.

On Tuesday, Frasz said he was uncomfortable with the idea the forest preserve district would allow the company to use the existing building.

Village President Dave Anderson strongly endorsed the plan, calling it a “preservation of a beautiful piece of land” and said it was “an opportunity for us to really do good for the

village.” He and Trustee Bill Grabarek talked about potential amenities that could be provided as part of the deal.

Elburn Trustee John Krukoff called it a “much better package” than the previous proposition.

Trustee Pat Schuberg said Helm being part of the deal makes it better.

“I’m happy to back your proposal,” Schuberg said.

Trustee Dave Gualdoni said he was “still on the fence,” although he added “this is more palatable than the last one.”

Trustee Ken Anderson, who serves as the county’s environmental and water resource division director, abstained from discussion.

Trustee Jeff Walter was not at the meeting.

Elburn officials will continue to discuss the issue.

Lincoln school community showing support with shirts

Lora and Howie Vitek, parents of a Lincoln third-grader, initiated the Save Lincoln Elementary School T-shirt effort late last week, so community members can make a visual sign of support at the Oct. 22 facilities options meeting at the school.

“We serve as an attractive, viable place to move,” Lora Vitek said. “When schools like Lincoln close, that begins to change.”

Elburn police sergeant has high hopes for Insanity Haunted House

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Growing up, Pete Pavia said he would convert his bedroom into a haunted house.

He said when he got older, he would go all out to decorate his front yard for Halloween. Pavia said he eventually turned his garage into a neighborhood attraction, inviting people to stop by for a good scare.

Pavia, a sergeant with the Elburn Police Department, now has launched his most ambitious Halloween endeavor yet. Pavia has created the Insanity Haunted House, which will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 1 at Charlestowne Mall, which next year is to be relaunched as The Quad St. Charles. The mall is at 3800 E. Main St. in St. Charles.

“We’re all a little insane,” Pavia said. “That’s our motto.”

Pavia, 40, said he had a successful opening last weekend. It will be open from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Starting Oct. 16, it will be open until 11 p.m.

He said actors will have a chance to play a role and enjoy the experience of scaring people. Pavia said that was by design.

“There is not a lot of gore,” Pavia said. “I know that has been the theme with other haunts. They go to the extreme

with it. You’re not going to see blood and guts. … It’ll be more in your face, actor-driven, with loud noises.”

Dominik said he has known Pavia for 10 years, but he didn’t previously know how much Pavia loved Halloween.

“I don’t know why I was so fascinated with Halloween,” Pavia said.

He said the big haunted house is something he always

has wanted to do. He said he has about 10,000 square feet of space, and the haunt itself is about 6,000 square feet. He said it probably will take seven or eight minutes for participants to work their way through the haunted house, but some might run through and some might take more time. He said there are 16 or 17 rooms.

To prepare, he said he has been through as many as 60

haunted houses throughout the U.S. during the past few years. He said the idea is to “scare forward, push them through the scene.”

He said he doesn’t recommend the attraction for those younger than 13, but he won’t turn anybody away. He said he will have a no-refund policy, however. He also is considering lights-on matinées on Sundays later in the month.

He said there were some who didn’t make it all the way through during the opening weekend.

Pavia said he likes the location in the mall, near the movie theater. He said it could be a night out, “dinner, a movie and a haunted house, all in one.” The cost will be $15 a person, but if there are long lines, people might want to pay a $25 VIP fee to avoid waiting. He said he is hoping more people join in to be actors and have a festive Halloween season.

Emma said those at the museum still are hopeful that two time capsules from the 1940s and 1970s buried on the school property will turn up.

“Trees have grown so much. The roots could have pushed them further down,” Emma said.

The former school building, most recently used as the Kane County Regional Office of Education, currently is owned

by Kane County. The Geneva Library Board approved a resolution in January to buy the property, with the closing date for the sale of the property to be scheduled after all demolition work has been completed by the county.

GENEVA – The cornerstone removed late last month from the demolition of the former Sixth Street School in Geneva contained only the blueprints for the building, Geneva History Museum Executive Director Terry Emma said.

Instead of a time capsule, Emma said there was a copy of the blueprints for the building built in 1923. It was wrapped in blueprint paper and some brown paper, and tied with twine.

“We were hoping for handwritten notes or photos,” Emma said. “The blueprints are in pretty bad shape. We’re trying to dry them out and preserve them as best we can, so they don’t have any further decay.”

The blueprints were large and were folded several times into a small square to fit into a cavity in the cornerstone, she said. It then was covered with a brick.

“We’re going to keep the cornerstone, but we’re not sure what we’re going to do with it yet – make it part of our

nerstone off a pickup truck and tip it so the cavity with the blueprints inside would be accessible.

“It’s not the easiest thing to maneuver,” Swanson said.

“We put it on a pallet jack because I didn’t want to drive the forklift all the way there, so I decided to just walk it over.”

Swanson took an employee with him to help control the cornerstone’s momentum down small inclines on James.

“It was a nice day, and I got to go through downtown Geneva with a piece of Geneva history and take it to a good home to save that cornerstone,” Swanson said. “The amazing thing was that people would roll down their car windows and ask, ‘Is that from the school?’ ” Emma said there are no photos or letters, but the blueprints have writing and signatures.

State funding status ‘scares’ domestic violence service providers ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – As the domestic violence youth program coordinator for Mutual Ground in Aurora, Sarah Hipp knows how domestic violence can affect kids.

“Without another model there to follow, it becomes a generational problem,” she said.

Although Mutual Ground has other revenue sources for its nearly $2 million budget, the children’s program primarily is supported by state funds, Executive Director Michelle Meyer said.

It is impossible to make plans when future state allocations are unknown, she said.

Not knowing when Mutual Ground will get paid and that the situation might extend into

2016 is “really scary for us,” Meyer said.

Maureen Manning-Rosenfeld of the Community Crisis Center called it a “disgrace.”

Part of the fear is not having the assurance that funding will be retroactive to July 1 and that it will take months to get funding once the budget is passed.

As agencies lose funds, McMahon said, they lose the ability to provide the services that

lead to changed behavior. He expects a reduction in services would lead to more domestic violence cases, he said.

Although some effects will be easy to quantify, such as the cost of housing inmates, he said, those numbers don’t include the full picture.

“There is a social cost, as well,” McMahon said, noting the full effects might not be felt for several years.

Batavia D-101 urges proper reporting after rumor incident

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 is asking parents to talk to their children about properly reporting information in light of a recent miscommunication among the community.

On Monday, Batavia police determined information about a possible threat to Batavia High School, at 1201 Main St., Batavia, was unfounded, according to an email sent to parents Tuesday morning.

“The Batavia police investigated and determined there is no danger to Batavia High

School staff or students,” Batavia High School Principal JoAnne Smith wrote in the email.

Smith wrote in the email a “number” of text messages were sent with false information, and there did not appear to be any basis to the rumors.

“Please take this opportu-

nity to talk to your child about reporting school safety concerns,” Smith wrote. “Their first contact should be with a BHS staff member or other trusted adult rather than perpetuating a rumor.”

Trustees question process for proposed addiction treatment center

Maxxam Partners LLC is seeking a special use permit from Kane County for property formerly known as Glenwood Academy, 41W400 Silver Glen Road.

ing it when it was Kiva Recovery in 2013. That project was voted down, but now a similar one is applying directly to the county.

Mark VanKerkhoff, director of the Kane County Development and Community Services Department, had said a Zoning Board of Appeals hearing on the special use request from Maxxam Partners request has not yet been scheduled.

“It requires a public hearing and a vote to make a recommendation,” VanKerkhoff said. “Then it will go to

the Development Committee and then the full County Board. Those dates have not been set yet.”

VanKerkhoff said the special use is required because the property is zoned for farming.

“The facilities constructed by Glenwood were constructed under a special use for a school for … residency. Their proposed use is similar to a hospital or convalescent facility, which are permitted special uses in the [farming] district,” VanKerkhoff said.

Before tabling the issue, Campton Hills trustees questioned how the Maxxam application for a special use was accepted by the county.

“Kane County is accepting the special use application, based on their state’s attorney’s recommendation,” Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen said. “So [Wednesday] attorney [Julie] Tappendorf and I and [village zoning officer] Chris Ranieri, will be meeting at the county to hear of their reason. The state’s attorney will be there to tell us why.”

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A scheduled discussion on the city’s upcoming electric rate was delayed indefinitely Tuesday due, in part, to ongoing talks – regarding litigation.

At Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke’s request, the agenda item for the 2016 electric rate was removed from the city’s Committee of the Whole agenda until further notice.

Batavia aldermen voted, 14-0, Sept. 21 to authorize city staff to negotiate a legal services agreement with Childress Duffy Ltd., the law firm that represented plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit involving the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus.

City officials wanted to retain the firm to make an informed decision in regard to the city’s options with respect to imminent litigation, Batavia City Attorney Kevin Drendel said Sept. 21.

Based on an analysis provided by Baker Tilly Virchow Krause LLP, city staff anticipates recommending an electric rate increase in 2016, ac-

cording to a city memo.

The proposed 2016 rate increase was going to be part of the Tuesday discussion, but the talk was called off at the start of the committee meeting.

“We don’t want to send mixed signals,” Schielke said during his request.

Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff on Tuesday was opposed to delaying the discussion. He had called the retaining of Childress Duffy Ltd. another step in some type of resolution to the situation with the energy campus.

Batavia city officials have come under repeated criticism in recent years for the city’s investment in the Prairie State campus. In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State.

A federal judge this year dismissed a class-action lawsuit brought by nine utility users and ratepayers from Batavia. The plaintiffs were represented by Childress Duffy Ltd.

LOCAL BRIEF The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that Aspen Foods of Chicago is recalling an additional 561,000 pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken products that appear to be ready-to-eat and may be contaminated with salmonella enteritidis.

It is an expansion of the July 15 recall to include additional products. After further analysis, Aspen Foods chose to recall products in an effort to prevent additional illness, stated a news release from the health department. These products were shipped to retail stores and food-service locations nationwide.

At least five Minnesota residents were reported to have become ill from the products, but no one has been immediately reported ill in Illinois, the release stated.

The frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken items that appear to be ready-to-eat were produced between Aug. 25 and Sept. 17, with “best if used by” dates of Aug. 23, 2016, to Dec. 15, 2016.

Consumers who have bought the products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Those with questions can contact the company at 844-277-6802.

How Obama can sell the Pacific trade deal to Congress BLOOMBERG VIEW After five years of tortuous negotiations, the U.S., Japan and 10 other Pacific Rim countries have reached an agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, one of the most ambitious trade pacts ever attempted. Not everybody is suitably impressed.

Besides several U.S. presidential candidates in both parties, the opposition includes many members of Congress and other national legislatures, which must ratify the pact. So now the national leaders who worked so hard to get this deal signed have to be equally persistent in selling it to their respective electorates.

Getting TPP up and running would be more than a momentary political win for President Barack Obama and his partners in the talks. Once in place, it will significantly advance living standards across the region and beyond.

TPP includes plenty of traditional trade-liberalizing measures – lower tariffs and non tariff barriers – but it also applies them to new areas. Trade in agriculture and services will be opened up. New rules acknowledge the digital economy.

There’ll be stronger protection for intellectual property. Restrictions on international investment will be pared back. Labor and environmental standards will be tightened, but in ways that don’t discriminate against trade.

In all these ways, the scope of the agreement goes well beyond what’s been achieved in previous rounds of global trade liberalization. It’s a shame such a far-reaching deal couldn’t be done for the world economy as a whole, and the World Trade Organization’s Doha Round of global talks is struggling to get anywhere. The good news, however, is TPP is capable of being scaled up.

At present, China isn’t a member; in the future, it should be.

Beyond the Pacific Rim, the deal can provide a template for liberalization in other regions. Eventually, merging TPP with the proposed trade pact between the U.S. and the European Union isn’t out of the question.

Is all this effort to spur trade really such a good thing? It is. More trade means more competition, which means higher productivity, hence better products and lower prices – in other words, higher living standards. Undeniably, the process is disruptive and not everybody will win. In this respect, trade is akin to technological progress: It’s just as challenging and just as indispensable.

In making the case for expanding trade, governments would be wise to stop apologizing for economic progress. They also should stop claiming greater trade “creates jobs,” as though no jobs will be lost as industries shift and restructure. Instead, they should turn their attention to improving opportunities for the minority of workers who’ll bear the brunt.

In weighing the pact, lawmakers ought to recognize all such deals involve compromise, and they should look at the big picture. The TPP will spur growth across roughly 40 percent of the world economy. If the U.S. and its 11 partners are looking for a way to counter the growing pessimism about the world’s economic prospects, they can start by putting TPP into effect as soon as possible.

stupid and too careless to own them, and they feel threatened by them. Because they feel threatened, they feel that nobody should own a weapon.

So, rather than “embolden” themselves, they’d rather “weaken” everybody else.

Of course, in reality, they aren’t really weakening “everybody,” just the individuals that were never a threat in the first place.

It is time to stop with the insanity of yelling “gun control” as if it is going to solve the problem. Shootings, like the one in Oregon, are not an indicator of a “gun problem;” they are an indicator of a “human problem.”

Find a way to fix the “human problem” and you won’t have to worry about guns.

Crisp, accurate ball striking propelled Geneva freshman boys golfer Jack McDonald to a round of even-par 72 at Tuesday’s Class 3A Larkin Regional at The Highlands of Elgin.

When circumstances summoned him to defend the score in a medalist playoff with St. Charles East’s Daniel Haugen, McDonald stayed within himself again.

Geneva already had earned the team title with a season-best 292 as McDonald and Haugen, a Saints senior, advanced to the No. 18 tee box.

The Vikings and runner-up Saints (309) also had secured spots in Monday’s East Sectional at St. Andrews in West Chicago.

That didn’t keep either playoff participant from pulling any kind of reins. It turns out McDonald’s second shot, on a playoff hole he eventually parred, ranked among his best on a picturesque day.

“I got up to it and I thought it was going to be just nice in the fairway. And this huge divot was right in the middle of it,” McDonald said. “I just sort of came down on it a little harder, and it worked out nicely.”

The ball landed on the green about 30 feet from the pin, setting up a downhill twoputt opportunity once Haugen’s approach shot on the par 4 fell short of the green.

Still, McDonald and a small gallery couldn’t have been completely certain until Haugen actually hit his third shot.

Moments earlier, Haugen birdied No. 18 on a chip from almost 30 yards out, tying him for the top individual score of the day.

Five North Stars advanced as individuals, however, led by seniors Nikolai Janchik and Trevor Kurtzhals, who both carded 79s.

Keeping an even keel proved beneficial for both.

“When I’m out there and I play bad on one hole, get a bo-

gey or something, I just don’t think about it,” said Janchik, whose father owns a golf apparel company. “Just have confidence for the next shot and go through with it.”

Kurtzhals, just two days removed from helping the Fox Valley Hawks boys hockey team to a season-opening win, enjoyed stringing each element of his game together on the links course.

“It was a fun round,” he said. “I just tried to focus on every shot. Not think of the outcome, just the process.”

Jake Muehlschlegel (80), Michael Stasczuk (82) and Tyler Barton (84) also qualified for North.

Geneva, meanwhile, boasted four scores in the top five.

senior JT Kruzich both shot 73, while junior Andrew Abel finished with 74.

Vikings coach Eric Hatczel has especially been impressed with the play of his underclassmen down the stretch.

“They don’t have enough experience to understand the pressure,” Hatczel said, “and that makes them fearless.”

McDonald was three-under through seven holes.

“I knew right then I had a chance to go really low,” he said. “And then I just kept hitting good shots and making putts, and it ended up happening.”

Dan Buetow (78), Mason Meadows (79) and Mike Bertke (80) also scored for East. Buetow and Meadows are sophomores, and Meadows was

promoted from junior varsity just before last week’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament, much to the Saints’ delight.

“They’re not really upset that I came up, because I’m proving that I can play,” Meadows said. “They’re all welcoming to me, and it’s fun.”

The UEC River tournament was held at St. Andrews, as well. East edged Geneva then, but both programs know everything resets in a few days, albeit at familiar surroundings.

“Yeah, it adds a sense of comfort that we’ve played St. Andrews hundreds of times and we know how to play that course,” Haugen said, “so we’re just going to come out and give it our best.”

North defense dominant in shutout

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – When soccer teams get victories, a lot of time the credit goes to the goal scorers. Although those players are the reason the numbers go up on the scoreboard, there is a reason the other team does not put up numbers.

The St. Charles North defense added another stellar effort Tuesday in the nightcap of Tri-Cities boys soccer night to shut out host Batavia, 2-0, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest.

Although speedsters Johnny Acevedo and Alex Amro tallied goals for the North Stars (12-2-3, 4-0 UEC River), it was the team defensive effort that stood out most in the win.

“I think the first thing we try to emphasize is defense first, you know,” North coach Eric Willson said. “Our back line is really playing in unison right now, and it really anchors a top to bottom defensive effort like tonight. We’re defense first and hope that our offense can transition off of that defense.”

Among the leaders of the experienced back line of the North Stars is Garrett Morgando. The senior defender limped off the field during and after the game, but it was nothing less than what he expected.

“These games are always battles and usually physical,” Morgando said with ice wrapped around his knee.

“We know that however each team’s season is going that we need to come out and play hard and try to get ahead.

“Our defense is playing at the top of its game right now.

It starts with [Zack Norton] in goal, and everyone helps out all the way to the forwards.

We have been playing together for a while, and when we communicate and play confident, it’s hard to score against us.”

North controls its own destiny in the River Division, as it remains unbeaten with two matches to go. St. Charles East is one game back, but the

The North Stars have games remaining against Streamwood and Geneva, and Willson knows their hot streak must continue if his team wants to finish at the top of the conference.

“We still have some work to do,” Willson said. “East is right on our tails and keeps winning, so we have to do the same. We are playing well, but efforts like tonight need to continue moving forward.”

always provide for entertainment, with records not meaning much once the rivalry games begin. But once Acevedo opened the scoring with six minutes left in the first half, the teams’ confidence levels went in their respective directions.

“We came out with high intensity and pressured hard, and that’s what we’ve been working on all year,” Acevedo said. “When we got that first goal, it gave us momentum.

There’s a different attitude with this team.”

Batavia (6-6-5, 1-2-2), coach Mark Gianfrancesco knew his team’s lack of creating chances would come back to hurt it in the end.

There were brief stretches, including shortly after the opening goal, where the Bulldogs showed signs of getting back in the game, but Amro’s goal, off a feed from Acevedo, with 30 minutes left in the match, really put a damper on the Bulldogs’ hopes.

“We just didn’t create and get behind them enough,” Gianfrancesco said. “They’re a

good team, give them credit.

I thought that we responded well to their first goal, but just not enough to where we could generate a goal. It’s unfortunate, but we have to get better in certain aspects and we’ll keep working.”

North has the two aforementioned UEC River matches left, but is back in action Thursday with a conference crossover match at West Aurora.

BATAVIA – When the annual Tri-Cities Night comes around each boys soccer season, records can be thrown out the window. The Upstate Eight Conference River Division matches are battles, and the first goal of the match usually proves vital.

Mitch Dorsey scored with 17 minutes remaining in the first half for St. Charles East, which provided the boost needed to give the Saints a 3-0 win over Geneva in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Batavia.

East (10-4-2, 4-1 UEC River) came in off of a weekend in which it won two of three games, the other being a draw, at the Gateway Classic in St. Louis. The Saints used that momentum after Dorsey’s early goal to add two more in the second half to remain unbeaten in their last six matches.

“It’s never easy playing a rival team like that,” Dorsey said. “After we got the first one, we played much more confident and got comfortable with each other.”

After a 1-3 start to the season, Saints coach Paul Jennison gave his team an ultimatum of sorts. Although a loss to St. Charles North may have knocked the Saints out of the UEC River race, they are certainly getting to where they want to be at this time of the season.

Jennison saw Jasminko Dizdarevic and Gustavo Mancera add second-half goals to pick up the win over the Vikings (4-6-4, 0-3-1).

“I told the guys after starting 1-3, this season is going to go one of two ways from here,” Jennison said. “We knew we would either be a very decent team or very poor team by the end of the year. The guys have responded very well to that challenge and have shown it.

Vikings coach Ryan Estabrook was not overly concerned with the possession the Saints had, in large part to not many chances being created against his team.

As far as what Geneva needs to do from here on out to pick up its first River win – and additional victories – Estabrook said a complete effort

will be important.

“We play well in stretches, but a full 80-minute effort is something we have lacked,” Estabrook said. “We had some mental lapses and some of those things, especially on the defensive end, are not quite sharp enough at this point.”

While a conference title is never off the list of goals for an East soccer team, boys or girls, Jennison and Co. have

their sights set on being as complete of a team as possible once the postseason arrives.

After seeing the way his team responded to challenges like the one he gave the squad after four games, Jennison seemed to get the Saints’ attention before things got out of hand.

It was never a tactical thing, but more so the fact East graduated a lot of players.

This group has a number of games under its belt at this point, and is excited with the direction it is headed.

“I think a lot of us just hadn’t played together before this year,” Dorsey said.

“We’re comfortable with each other now and know a lot of each other’s strengths. We always had the confidence, but now with the chemistry, we have become stronger as a group and I think it shows.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North girls volleyball team clinched the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title by beating crosstown rival St. Charles East in two sets Tuesday night.

The host North Stars swept the Saints, 25-23, 25-13, on the seventh annual Volley for the Cure night, an event to honor breast cancer survivors.

“I’m glad they fought through some of their own errors that they were making in the first set,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said. “I think it was just a lot of anxiety about the game. It’s always an emotional night for everybody, and then you add the rivalry.”

East (15-7, 4-2 UEC River) kept pace with North in the first set, tying the game six times, but never was able to take the lead. The Saints tied it at 21 on a Hannah Spicer kill. But as in the previous

five ties, North immediately regained the advantage, this time on one of Abigail Graham’s four kills.

East pulled within one, 2423, when North (20-3, 6-0) was cited for one of it players being Daley Krage out of position.

The infraction cost the North Stars a point. North won the match on the next Saints serve with a Claire Anderson kill. The senior finished the night with 10 kills.

“I thought we played really well tonight. I think we started off with a lot of nerves,” said North’s Daley Krage (six kills). “We finally got into a rhythm and that helped with our confidence. We weren’t afraid to take big swings, and I think that really helped us.”

The North Stars dominated the second set. After being tied early at 3, the North Stars pulled away. North set the tone after the tie with Krage at the service line.

The North Stars rattled off six straight points. A service error broke the string, but North was ahead, 9-4 East was hampered in the second set when the wrong lineup was submitted to the scorer. The girls were unsure of their positions and even lost a point as a result of serving out of order.

“That was all on me,” Kull said. “I put the wrong lineup

in, and there’s no way that they could come through that.”

The North Stars closed out the match with an 11-4 run.

“We are excited that we are playing great teams, playing them well and winning,” Hawkins said.

Jaclyn Taylor had 24 assists for the North Stars and Anna DuVall had eight kills.

Klaudia Sowizral led the Saints with six kills and teammate Morgan Kull had 10 assists.

Area breast cancer survivors were honored before the match, including St. Charles North dean of students Julie Christiansen and Mary Wallin, wife of East junior varsity coach Mark Wallin. North and East players escorted them onto the court.

“It felt really great to honor her and in memory of everyone who lost the battle,” said Krage about her mother’s cousin, Kelly Burmeister, another honoree. “That she survived is really meaningful.”

Vikings sweep Bulldogs on senior night

By THOMAS KUEBEL editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Winning isn’t everything, but the Geneva girls volleyball team did it anyway Tuesday, sweeping Batavia, 25-18, 25-19, in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

The Geneva athletic department celebrated senior night by honoring Kyley Thompson, Megan Schmidt, Ashley Marcinkus and Kelly Jezior. Marcinkus and Jezior returned the favor by starting and recording one ace apiece.

Assistant coach Jessica Anspach, who answered questions for head coach Annie Seitelman, who left shortly after the match to be with her newborn child, was not surprised by the newcomers stepping up.

“They work on serving all the time and they both had key

aces at key times,” Anspach said.

Marcinkus and Jezior did not play volleyball their junior year but returned for their senior Grace Loberg season as key contributors for Geneva (19-2, 4-1 UEC River). Thompson and Schmidt both were happy to do their part in the win, as well.

“It’s really exciting; there’s nothing like a big game to go out on, especially on our home court and I love playing against Batavia. They are a great team, great sportsmanship and it’s a really fun environment,” Thompson said.

The Bulldogs (8-18, 2-3) battled as they always do, coming as close as 19-17 in the second set before a Geneva rally put Batavia away for good.

“I thought we did a good job getting them out of system with our serving. Both teams were serving really tough tonight,” Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said.

“We did a drill on long rallies for over an hour last night, and the drill seemed to pay off,” Trippi-Payne continued, saluting the Bulldogs for taking the three longest rallies of the match.

The long rally points were keyed because of great defense from senior Katelyn Fegan (nine digs) and freshman Sam Juarez (seven digs). Sydney Cavanaugh scored five kills to lead the offense while sophomore Jenna Garrett had 10 assists.

“They did a nice job of coming out here playing hard, and they are getting better and better,” Trippi-Payne said.

A thundering Grace Loberg kill gave Geneva a 6-3 lead in

the decisive second set. From there, the Vikings opened up an 11-4 advantage and never looked back.

The frontline fence of juniors Loberg, Ally Mullen and Ally Barrett combined for 21 kills in the match.

Ally Mullen “I think I left the program in great hands because we have great leaders as the juniors and sophomores come up,” Schmidt said. “So I think they will have great time next year.”

“We have some of the best players I have ever seen in our junior class. I can’t wait to see what they leave behind,” added Thompson.

Geneva and Batavia will await the Class 4A postseason assignment announcement later this week.

ELBURN – The Kaneland boys golf team has been hoping for at least four scorers to visit the 70s this season.

The host Knights finally got there during Tuesday’s Class 2A Kaneland Regional at Hughes Creek Golf Club.

They certainly needed each and every one of those scores as they edged runner-up St. Francis, 309-313 to win the regional. Both teams, along with Wheaton Academy, automatically advanced Monday’s Freeport Sectional.

“It’s always hard to predict a score, but I knew that if our guys played well and the weather was nice, like it was today, that we could shoot under 310, which was a really nice score for us,” Kaneland coach Mark Meyer said.

“I’m very happy getting the four scores in the 70s. It was something we hadn’t done all season, so it was nice to do it on our own course during a regional.”

Junior Jake Hed was the medalist and Kaneland’s last golfer to finish. Hed was 2-over-par after nine, but finished with an even-par 36 on the back nine for a 74.

“I shot close to what I usually do here, but I wasn’t rolling in any putts,” he said. “I was getting the ball on the green and two-putting about every time. I took a double (bogey)

on one hole, but outside of that I was pretty consistent.”

It started off as a good day early on for the Knights when their No. 6 player, senior Kevin Healy, came in with a 78.

Freshman Will Marshall added a 78 and junior Dan Franck contributed a 79 to complete the scoring for the Knights.

St. Francis seniors Jonathan Nocek and Connor Buckley paced the Spartans, both shooting 77s.

Class 3A Oswego Regional: At Blackberry Oaks in Bristol, Marmion earned the sectional title with a team score of 310, clipping Waubonsie Valley (311) and Metea Valley (312) and advancing to Monday’s St. Charles East Sectional at St. Andrews in West Chicago.

“We were confident going in today that we could sneak out a spot,” Cadets coach Doug Roberts said, “and obviously it’s great that we won the whole thing. … We’re excited about that, but the test next Monday is going to be a big one.”

Each of Marmion’s scorers finished in the 70s. Nick Huggins (74) led the way, while Johnny Callahan (78), Jackson Clark (79) and Luke Hoss (79) followed.

South sounds out his partner by rebidding three clubs. Opener will think that this is a help-suit game-try.

If he does not have club help, he will sign off in three spades, which South would raise to game. Here, though, North jumps to four spades, confirming four-card spade support and a good club holding. Then South leaps to six spades, the contract he believes he can make.

How should declarer plan the play after West leads the heart jack?

South should win the first trick, cash the two top trumps (unlucky!), and start on the clubs, discarding dummy’s heart loser on the third round.

24 Anxiety disorders result of heredity and life experiences Dear Dr. K: I endured some physical and emotional abuse as a child.

Could this explain why I struggle with anxiety as an adult?

Dear Reader: Sigmund Freud and many other psychiatrists thought so. Indeed, exploring the experiences of childhood is an important part of psychoanalysis.

This view did not think childhood experiences could actually make physical changes in brain chemistry, however.

Instead, it imagined an unchanged brain that simply was given unusually difficult experiences to cope with.

Today, we have a somewhat different view.

We now know childhood is a time when the brain is exceptionally fragile and vulnerable to outside influences. Exposure to extreme stress, such as abuse, neglect, violence in the home or the loss of a loved one, can affect a child’s developing brain.

It can impair his or her ability to negotiate emotional bumps in the road later on. Scientists call this toxic stress.

Studies show toddlers who live in unstable families have a strong stress response when confronted with a new and unexpected situation. On the other hand, children from healthy families are better able to weather unknown situations.

Psychological and physical trauma in childhood seems to alter the brain in a way that makes it more susceptible to anxiety. For one thing, it makes what is known as the HPA axis overly sensitive. The HPA axis is a pathway of hormones that influence mood. Imbalances of certain hormones in this pathway increase the risk for anxiety and may induce anxiety symptoms.

Early trauma also may cause a lasting increase in certain stress hormones, and pumped-up levels

Traumas also may change the structure of the brain. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that plays a central role in processing long-term memories. It works closely with the amygdala, the brain’s “fear” center. The hippocampus is smaller in some people with post-traumatic stress disorder. It also is smaller in some people who have endured extreme, prolonged stress.

Of course, not everyone who has survived a traumatic event develops an anxiety disorder.

That’s where a person’s genes and brain chemistry come in. It’s possible some people are genetically or biologically more susceptible to anxiety, but it may take a traumatic life event to actually “push” them into being anxious.

In fact, an inherited tendency to be anxious may turn some childhood experiences into traumatic ones. For example, it may cause a 3-year-old to fear she has been abandoned every morning when her parents leave for work. Most 3-year-olds without that inherited tendency would not feel abandoned.

On the other hand, trauma is not always a trigger. Some people who develop an anxiety disorder have not endured particularly stressful events. As with most illnesses, anxiety is affected both by genes and by life experiences.

Student spurns higher education after being rejected by university Dr. Wallace: Our son applied to attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and he is extremely disappointed they did not accept him as a student. He now is saying he doesn’t want to attend any college or university and wants to be an auto mechanic.

rejection can be painful – and there’s plenty of pain being felt by students who fail to get into the colleges of their choosing. The pain is intensified if they believe all future success depends on getting accepted at a “top” school.

In a report on college rejection, Paul Kelleher, the principal of a high school in New York, said the pressure to get into a leading school is now more intense than ever.

“This is a time of great financial stress in the country,” he said. “Students now feel that if they don’t go to one of the top 15 or 20 schools, college life is over.”

“I thought my life was over,” a straight-A student from New York recalled after she was turned down by her first, and only, college choice, the University of Notre Dame.

Howard Green, a former admissions dean at Princeton University, emphasized college rejection is not a personal putdown. “A selective college,” he notes, “is one that, by definition, receives applications from many more qualified kids than it can ever accept. After the initial shock, many students come to realize that rejection is not the tragedy it first seems.”

What counts for serious students, the experts say, are strong undergraduate achievements. They stress

“the student who works hard and does well at a less prestigious college has just as good a chance of getting admitted to ‘selective’ graduate schools as the student who attended a ‘prestigious’ school of higher learning.”

Sometimes rejection can be a blessing in disguise.

When forced to reevaluate their goals, many students are pleasantly surprised by the school they do eventually attend.

A community college can be a good selection. Courses taken there can be applied to a bachelor’s degree at almost all colleges and universities.

A friend of mine studied at a community college in Visalia, California, then transferred to Stanford and graduated two years later with a bachelor’s degree. He later earned a master’s degree from this “prestigious” university.

If there is a will, there is a way. Go for it! The day you receive your diploma from a college or university and decide being an auto mechanic is your ambition, I’m positive your educational experience will help you become a superb mechanic.

I have a young daughter from a previous marriage, and my husband has two teenagers, a boy and girl, from a prior marriage.

Like many blended families, we have our struggles, but one is becoming increasingly difficult to deal with.
